man has been arrested and charged with arson following a blaze which destroyed a Somerville home on Monday. Police have confirmed that a 24-year-old male was charged on Tuesday afternoon and he was due to appear in the Manukau District Court yesterday. Part of Somerville Road was closed off from 4pm on Monday as fire fighters worked for several hours to get the blaze under control. Witnesses said people could be seen fleeing the home with their pets. At the height of the fire, neighbouring properties were evacuated and black smoke billowed from the house. It was visible from several kilometres away. Four fire crews from Howick, Papatoetoe, Mt Wellington and Otara were called to the blaze. Police and St John’s Ambulance service were also on hand as was the police Eagle helicopter which could be seen circling the property from the air. The home is 250 metres from Somerville Intermediate

ore than 120 women celebrated 125 years of Women’s Suffrage at a women’s conference held at Bucklands and Eastern Beach War Memorial Hall on the weekend. Robust discussions were held from women’s health to mental health and women’s empowerment as the attendees broke up into groups at the annual conference of the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA). Thought provoking group discussions were led by Dr Claire Badenhorst, Dr Pervin Dalal, Dr Bhavana Patel, Dr Keerthna Kamath and Dr Vandana Resela. Organised by Dr Primla Khar, chairperson Women’s Forum NZICA, the day-long event incorporated

a plethora of activities from discussions to talks by women who walk the talk like the former Governor General’s wife Lady Susan Satyanand and Minister for Ethnic Communities, Building and Construction, Education and Health, Jenni Salesa as well as politician and trade unionist Laila Harre. “One of the differences between the genders is that a woman’s head is always influenced by her heart and a man’s heart is in his head,” said lady Satyanand light-heartedly. “It always begins when you sink into his arms and ends with your hands in the sink.” `So how is life now that Dr Anand Satyanand is no more the Governor General of New Zealand,’ asked one, to which her prompt reply was “ I feel more self reliant now that I don’t have other doing things for

me.” Members of Parliament Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Paramjit Parmar were also there to cheer and inspire women to look after each other. “It is only apt that NZICA Women’s Forum decided to hold their Annual Conference as a celebration of 125 years of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand. It is an opportune time to promote the well being of all and women in particular,” said Dr Khar. There was plenty to keep women of all ages, professions and calibre well nourished at the conference. A soul-stirring dance drama performance by the youth challenging Women’s Empowerment as Reality or Myth had everyone glued to their seats as it sensitively broached the topic of sexual abuse. It was followed by a presentation by Sri Rashmi which pushed women to

seek an answer from within—do we recognise abuse? Are we open to discuss it? The Tale of Kate Sheppard, a dramatic adaptation of the women’s suffragette movement in New Zealand that changed the course of history, also had the delegates sit up and take notice. A session on financial tips for

women by Dr Manisha Dullu had women take notes. Adding to the fun factor was a Punjabi dance performance by Gurpreet and her team from Punjabi Cultural Association. A chair yoga session by Neelu Taore from the Art of Living had everyone in a relaxed mood, talking about wellbeing and the release of happy hormones.

Man trapped under car dies A Highland Park man died on Saturday after becoming trapped under his car. At the time of going to press, police had not yet released the man’s name. They confirmed at the weekend that his next-of-kin had been notified. Police said in a media statement that initial reports suggest the man was pushing a vehicle down a driveway about 12.15pm when he somehow became trapped underneath it. Emergency services were called to the incident on private property. The death has been referred to the Coroner.

OPINION

Hitting NZ where it hurts With the cost of living With going up and business confidence heading Jami-Lee down, it is very clear that Ross the Government is on the wrong track for New Zealand. The recent decision around banning oil and gas exploration is a good example of the kind of policy that illustrates the anti-growth agenda of this Government. In this case, the official advice on this issue shows that the decision was made with very little evidence behind it. Officials who provided recommendation to the Minister were against the move and said that the ban could cost the New Zealand economy $7.9 billion in lost tax revenue. What’s worse, there is also limited evidence that the ban will even reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Decisions such as these directly affect the confidence of New Zealand’s business as the Government shows it is willing to make economically damaging decisions in order to seize a headline. That has a very real effect on New Zealanders. As the confidence in the New Zealand economy wanes, we can also see the value of our dollar dropping. We can see the impact that has on our fuel prices as they reach higher and higher prices in the face of our weakening currency. At this time last year the national fuel price was, according to the AA, $2.04 per litre. Today it’s $2.40. That is a huge increase that is driving up the cost of living. It means that, for someone driving a car that takes 60 litres of petrol, it costs an extra $21.60 every time you refuel. That will add up to hundreds of dollars over a year. On top of that, the Government is planning on slapping three rounds of new fuel taxes each year for the next three years starting on October 1, 2018. Instead of new taxes, higher prices and low confidence, we need to jump start our approach to the economy. We need to start listening to the workers and businesses who make it run and ensure we are doing all that we can to lower everyone’s cost of living. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

EDUCATION

How in the world do you flip a classroom? ■ BY FARIDA MASTER

S

ome local school teachers are pushing the envelope with a revolutionary educational philosophy. While not many traditional schools are aware of Flipped Classrooms, it is a definite trend and part of the national education conversation in New Zealand. At a recent Reach Every Student Conference (RESCON) hosted at Ormiston Senior College by leader of mathematics Subash Chandar K, more than 60 teachers spent two days with Jon Bergmann, one of the pioneers of flipped learning. He was accompanied by a team of leading New Zealand and Australian teachers including Jeremy Cumming, Beth Lamb, Matt Lambert, Steve Griffiths and Aimee Shackleton. The opening session by Mr Bergmann started with a keynote on `Rising above to make a difference’. He asked teachers why they are in the profession (`to inspire, make a difference, joy’). He also received many honest answers to questions around debilitating factors that hold schools back. `Toxic culture, inflated

egos, traditional mindsets’, were some of the responses by teachers recorded on the Mentimeter app that instantly showed the poll results on the big screen. Mr Bergmann said teachers could give themselves permission not to be perfect. “But you must remember that the main thing is to reach to every student in the classroom,” he said. So how do you flip a classroom? In a traditional classroom set-up, the teacher delivers lessons face-to-face to students

who listen, interact and take notes. However, in a flipped classroom students access teacher-created videos and pre-recorded lessons on their devices. They are introduced to content before the class begins. It effectively frees up more time in the classroom to assist students with problems they face whilst working on an assignment. “It’s not about chalk and talk,” said Mr Bergmann. The American educationist works with governments,

schools and universities globally, and has an international faculty to introduce the learning model in Australia, Sweden, Norway, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, China and Taiwan. A former science and technology teacher, Mr Bergmann decided to “flip” what students did in his class, watching video lectures at home and doing exercises (homework) in class under supervision. He found that student grades went up. “It’s time to stop lecturing and engage students by using the time in the classroom to have discussions and debates,” he said. “A lot of kids who used to miss class also found it very helpful to have pre-recorded lessons as flipped learning creates a student-centred environment. Students can stop and rewind the video for information as often as they need to do understand the concept. “It’s more active instead of the passive learning in class.”. Some of the technologysavvy teachers at the conference said they are working with the concept of flipped classrooms in their schools while some of the more experienced teachers are still trying to fully understand the new concept.

he 35,000 year old traditional Moon Festival was celebrated with great gusto at Lloyd Elsmore Park at the weekend and Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there to capture it. Hosted for the very first time in east Auckland by the Howick Local Board, one of the oldest and most popular Chinese festivals had a great turnout. There were around 50-60 performances by various cultural groups including Chinese, Korean, Indian, Russian, Romanian and Chilean which kept everyone entertained for more than six hours. Another designated area showcased demonstrations of tai chi throughout the evening. Organised by local board’s Ethnic, Migrant and Maori Affairs portfolio lead, Peter Young, with help from the founder of Pakuranga Chinese Association Barry Hung, there was plenty of street food as well as Moon Cakes, a traditional pastry delicacy filled with red bean or lotus paste, to go around. The round shape of full moon represents perfection, reunion and harmony. There was certainly that feeling in Pakuranga on Saturday night.

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good steak, chips and a beer. At The Landmark Bar and Eatery in Panmure, simple is best. In the last 12 months new Chef Ian Adams has taken a whole new approach to the Landmark’s trademark menu and the community can’t get enough. Rather than a complete revamp, Ian says he has evolved the menu to give customers a true pub dining experience, that still includes all the staples that they love. Ian is a specialist pub chef and says it is no easy feat. “Pub dining is very different from other aspects of cooking. “You have to think on your feet, be ready to adapt the menu at any time and take basic foods and ensure they are so packed full of flavour.” But with 30 years industry experience, he knows exactly what it takes to make a delicious meal. “We have really gone back to basics and the focus now is on simple, wholesome foods that are packed full of taste.” Ian says it’s the little things that set them apart such as making their own pizza sauce for their authentic style New York pizzas or the precise combination of herbs and spices on their steak. And the revamped menu has certainly been making an impression.

Macleans tops Red Nose college fundraising M

acleans College is the highest performing college in NZ when it comes to fundraising efforts for Cure Kids’ annual fundraiser, Red Nose Day, which falls tomorrow. This year, the school has been running a series of fundraising activities to put the spotlight on and raise funds for the vital child health research Cure Kids supports. The Red Nose Gala was held at Macleans College recently and was a fun day of activities - from food stalls, fire breathing and tombola’s and a competition for one staff member to shave their head for the good cause! This year, Rutherford House students have raised $14,000 for Cure Kids - making it the best performing fundraising college in the country. Macleans College’s Rutherford House supports Cure Kids as its dedicated chosen charity. Andy Meldrum, Rutherford Deputy House Leader, says; “Each year our students work hard to support Cure Kids. Our annual Red Nose Gala has been a mainstay of our fundraising for a number of years, supported and attended each year by Cure Kids ambassadors”. Meanwhile, this Saturday, there will be a Red Nose Day Crack the Code activation at

A welcoming reception area of Pakuranga Medical overlooks a cheerful kid’s area that when complete will be done up with bean bags, books, and a television that screens children’s’ programmes as well as an inviting jungle scene on the wall, ensuring that the children are happy and sufficiently occupied. Complete with seven dedicated nursing areas, the design resembles a race track, as consulting rooms circle the nursing stations. The General Practice incorporates a Resus room in case of an emergency, a Triage area for IV infusion and many other nursing services, a

minor Surgery Theatre and a special Gurney lift which if required will give a patient the privacy to be wheeled out from a different exit, without causing any discomfort or stress to them or the other patients around. Creating a more efficient and integrated work environment is a comfortable and relaxing shared staff lunchroom which can be enjoyed by the entire centre’s staff. Dale Shepherd, general manager of Pakuranga Medical who has been overlooking the setting up of the new facility says, “A shared lunch room gives an opportunity for everyone involved to get together and talk about patient care. Shared knowledge will enable us to look after our patients better.” A sunlit and spacious shared meeting room allows the tenants to

opportunity to offer a whole lot more of great care to our patients,” says Mrs Shepherd who can hardly contain her excitement about the soonto-be-opened medical centre. Looking back at the journey of Pakuranga Medical Centre which has come a long way, she says, “Ten years ago we merged three medical centres to combine our strengths and were very excited about the new project till the Auckland City Council announced the AMETI project. We have been looking for the right place, the right building, ever since the council announcement! “We have a very good team working with us that have a great respect for the Pakuranga and surrounding areas and the people living there. “Now the end result is this spectacular project that we have thrown our lives in to make it all happen,” she laughs. The centre will have a formal opening in December, with the Minister for Health David Clark, high profile guests, people from the District Health Board and Primary Health Organisation attending it. In the meanwhile, long-time patients have been popping in just to say hello and have a peak of the family focussed, spanking new facility in the heart of Pakuranga area. Employment relations face Find Me comes to Harlequin Musical Theatre Government dysfunction FIND ME

Zealanders, these advantages are put at significant risk. Business confidence is slumping and both hiring and investment intentions have turned negative. More than 10,000 jobs a month were created in the two years before the 2017 election. Since the election, this has plummeted to 4000 a month. National believes a good industrial relations framework and a flexible labour market are critical to a strong and growing economy. That provides the best opportunities for employers and employees and is what we’re fighting hard for. Our proposed changes would retain 90-day trials for all businesses, stop them from being forced into agreements with unions that would require a business in Auckland to pay the same wages as one in Timaru, and ensure union officials have to get permission to enter a workplace. The Government’s dysfunction makes it difficult for businesses to plan and is especially troubling for small business owners who do their best to keep afloat, manage their costs, and hopefully create more jobs. The Government should be focussed on policies that help businesses grow and create more jobs, rather than focusing on themselves and their internal disagreements. ➤ Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga

Simeon SAYS

➤ By: Olwyn Wymark ➤ Directed by: Fiona Bailey ➤ Performs at: Harlequin Musical Theatre – 563 Pakuranga Road, Howick ➤ Dates: October 4, 5 and 6 at 7.30pm and October 7 at 1.30pm ➤ Cost: $10 per head Find Me is a gritty piece of literature based on a true story of the life of a young girl Verity, who is living with mental illness. This character is played by five actresses to help portray the many and different sides to this young girl. Set in the 1950s to 1970s, it contains messages that still ring true today. The play covers the full array of emotions with some parts quite humorous and others pulling on the heart strings. Audiences will learn about human nature, humility and the desperation involved in dealing with mental illness. Director Fiona Bailey says,

One of the key causes of dysfunction in the current With Government has been caused by the Employment Simeon Relations legislation, which Brown is currently before Parliament. This legislation will take New Zealand back to the bad-old-days when unions controlled the workplace and there was no flexibility in industrial relations. National has opposed this Bill and has lodged a series of changes that seek to overturn its worst provisions. On the one hand Labour sees this Bill as a key credibility test in the eyes of its allies in the Trade Union movement, who fear NZ First will weaken their resolve. On the other hand Winston Peters has hinted at concessions on a Bill he has called a “work in progress” despite it having been through the Cabinet process. National believes our employment law is worth fighting for and that businesses deserve certainty and clarity from this Government, rather than the dysfunction which is on display. Good employment law is one of the foundations of New Zealand’s growth and allows flexible, modern workplaces that can compete in a fast-changing global economy. Preserving New Zealand’s competitive advantages is critical and when we have a Government that seems intent on reversing the hard-earned gains made by New

Franklin Taphouse 100 scooter challenge rakes it in for the boys T

he Pakuranga PlaceMakers team’s Franklin 100 Scooter Challenge for Blue September on Saturday was a great success, with 30 riders taking part and more than $7000 being raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Free PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing was also available for males at the event, with 16 men having their first ever test on Saturday as a result of it being on offer to them. Rowan Toms, branch operator at

JU0713

Pakuranga PlaceMakers, says the fact a number of local men were PSA tested for the first time had to be one of the best things about the event. “This is what it’s all about – we want to save the lives of Kiwi men and just a quick blood test is all it takes to get a prostate cancer check – it’s such an easy thing to do and we feel bloody good about playing our part in raising awareness around that,” he says. He is adamant the Pakuranga

PlaceMakers team will continue to build on the event, and he’s already starting planning for 2019. “We’re aiming big next year – our goal is to get 60 new guys PSA tested, and have 100 riders. The event was terrific, and we want to grow it even more so we can continue to raise awareness and do our bit for the health of men in our area,” he says. Saturday’s event was the first Blue September fundraising event of its kind and involved participants

driving 50cc scooters around the Franklin area, completing numerous challenges such as oyster shucking, egg and spoon races, and driving drills. The event was followed by live entertainment and auctions at The Franklin in Beachlands. “It was a team effort, with key sponsors and supporters of the event including The Franklin in Beachlands, Clevedon Oysters and the Beachlands Police, all helping show their support for Blue September and the Prostate Cancer Foundation,” says

Toms. PlaceMakers, principal sponsor of Blue September, has raised more than $1.9 million in the past eight years and is again gearing up to contribute towards funding groundbreaking research projects, support services for survivors and their families and year-round education campaigns. One man in New Zealand is diagnosed every three hours, one or more die each day and more than 60 per cent of survivors reporting having no symptoms when diagnosed.

Half Moon Bay pontoon repairs underway W

ork is underway at Half Moon Bay to repair and replace pontoons and piles severely damaged by a storm in January this year. Howick Local Board chair David Collings and Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart stopped by the site to get an update on progress this week. Both have fielded plenty of inquiries from anxious boaties on the progress of the works over the past few months and are happy to see things starting to move ahead. “With the scale of the damage it was clear it wouldn’t be a quick fix but it is good to see it get started.” Councillor Stewart is also encouraged to hear the work is on track to be finished by Labour Weekend as predicted, although she hopes it could be finished sooner. “I have fielded plenty of calls and have been regularly checking in for updates. This is an extremely popular facility and the sooner it is back to full capacity the better.” Auckland Council’s head of operational management and maintenance, Agnes McCormack, says the works are extensive. The bulk of the concrete

Howick Local Board members (front) Garry Boles (second left), Adele White (second right) and chair David Collings (right) joined Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart (centre) at Half Moon Bay to see progress on repairs of the ramp and pontoons.

pontoon units were damaged beyond repair and are unable to be reinstalled, the concrete boat ramp was undermined, and six of the 14 piles were also damaged and are being replaced. Other piles are being strengthened and lengthened by installing sleeves over them to minimise the impact of future storms. “It has taken us a while to get here but we needed to make sure we understood the extent

of the damage, deal with insurance, come up with a plan and then wait for some of the specific materials to arrive,” Agnes McCormack says. The longer piles required are made from hardwood and had to be sourced from overseas as the lengths required were not available in New Zealand. This repair work involves: ➤➤repairing the undermined ramp ➤➤replacing the northern abutment

➤➤replacing all piles that are not suitable to be re-used ➤➤lengthening the piles that are not being replaced ➤➤installing the new pontoons. The pontoons were among several coastal structures throughout the region damaged during the January storm. Meanwhile, access to the ramp is being kept open as works allow with at least one lane open at the weekends and two during the week.

Your view No choice with Super City

I refer to the recent letter from Michael Phillips regarding non-notified developments in Howick. In his last paragraph he apologises to the people of Auckland for voting for the Super City. He must have been extremely lucky to have been able to vote on the creation on the so called Super City. I and, I think, the rest of Aucklanders were not allowed a vote on this matter. This was something foisted upon the people of Auckland by Rodney Hyde giving them no say at the ballot box. Bring back local government! John Pollock, Pakuranga

Freedom camping a bad idea

This is a crazy idea (Freedom campers not welcome, Times, September 13). What is the council thinking? If you want to camp, you must find a camping park with the facilities to support this. Look at the bad press that freedom campers have received in New Zealand over the past few years: bad behaviour, illegal dumping of waste, crowding out beach areas, not following the rules...a recipe for headaches. Sure, there may be many such campers that are responsible but that is not the point. And a trial that David Collings

Email us at bot@times.co.nz or comment on our Facebook page, facebook.com/timesonlinenz

refers to may have gone smoothly, but that is not the reality. Many are young and will take advantage. Note that east Auckland is already stressed with the influx of people to this area. Beach facilities and parking are stretched without adding freedom campers to the mix. Our police office is not open over weekends. Who will manage the complaints that are sure to arise? May sanity prevail and may our councillors show some leadership here please. Steve Lincoln, Botany Downs

Thank you for the support Congratulations to Paul Young on his election as our newest councillor. I wish you all the best as you take on the challenging role. Auckland Council is making decisions that will affect our city for generations and Howick has entrusted you with the role of ensuring they provide the best possible outcome for our community and city. Thank you for everyone who voted for me, I am humbled by every vote received. Thank you for your belief in me and my campaign. We sent a strong message that east Auckland needs to be heard at the council table. Commiserations to the other candidates. It was a good campaign and, as a voter, I was pleased by the range and quality of candidates

170 years of service recognised At the June monthly meeting of The Pakuranga Lodge No 416 three long-serving members of the local masonic fraternity were recognised for their service to Freemasonry and community. W Bro Jimmy Laurenson and on offer. Despite our differences in opinion, you were all great company and should be proud of your results regardless. The low voter turnout is disappointing but, sadly, not surprising.

W Bro Morrin Cooper were presented with their 60-year membership bars and VW Bro Alan Bevins with his 50-year badge by the Grand Master of Freemasons NZ, MW Bro Mark Winger, before 85 Freemasons, family and friends. Many people feel that their voices are not heard and that action is too slow. The decisions surrounding Stockade Hill are symptomatic of this disconnect - locals ignored, misun-

derstood and left with broken promises. We have a lot of work to do to rebuild this trust if we are to lift voter engagement and we must. I’m also worried about the number of people reporting their voting papers never arrived. Thank you to everyone who helped throughout my campaign for your tireless support. A campaign is a team effort and would not be possible without the many volunteers who delivered letters, helped out with billboards and much more. Last but not least, thank you to my partner, family and friends. Campaigning can be all consuming and those around me have been incredible, not just with supporting me but also being understanding with the demands on my time and availability. I return to work to continue my full time job for a company I love working for. I will continue to be actively involved in my community and be a vocal advocate for east Auckland. Damian Light

Howick cousins ready to rule the kitchen Cooking up a storm in the kitchen is second nature to Howick locals, Enna Ye and May Chen. But can they handle the heat of competition when one of New Zealand’s most popular reality shows hits home? Household names, Pete Evans and Manu Feildel will again host My Kitchen Rules New Zealand (MKR) as teams from throughout the country vie to prove the proof of the pudding is actually in their hands. “I partnered with Enna because we’re a strong team,” says May. “We’re really close; we own a side business together and have similar upbringings. Cooking has always

been a part of our lives from a young age. With that, I thought we could handle any challenges [MKR] would throw at us.” Specialising in Asian fusion dishes, food is in the blood of these 20-something cooking cousins. As first generation Kiwis, they intend to show exactly how East and West can meet. “We’re going to win through sheer hard work,” May adds. “That’s what we’ve been taught growing up, and that’s what’s going to get the winning result.” The new season of MKR NZ screens from 7.30pm, October 7 on TVNZ 2.

The next elections will be held on October 3 in the Georgian Black Sea resort Batumi and will be fiercely contested between three candidates. Local chess organiser Paul Spiller (who is also the vice-president of the NZ Chess Federation and president of the Oceania region) will be Oceania’s first representative in a presidential election, running for the position of vice-president on the ticket of English grandmaster Nigel Short. The other two tickets are headed by Russian Arkady Dvorkovich, the recent chairman of the organising committee for the FIFA World Cup, and by current FIDE vice-president Georgio Makropoulas. “The main reason behind the decision to stand is to bring about much-needed reforms and transparency to the running of world chess and also to promote the development of chess in the Oceania region,” said Spiller.

Auckland offer Blues some hope Agnew’s With Ivan Agnew

Auckland are playing a better game than the Blues thanks to new coach Alama Ieremia.

Ofa Tu’ungafasi and James Parsons. Lock Patrick Tuipulotu will be the third All Black in the pack and prolific try-scoring No 8 Akira Ioane and No 7 Blake Gibson are highly regarded. Although the loss of Jerome Kaino’s experience will hurt, the depth is there to produce a strong pack of forwards. The return of Ma’a Nonu as 33-year-old Sonny Bill Williams’ midfield partner, offers great experience but is a gamble with Nonu

turning 37 next year, four years after he starred for the All Blacks in their 2015 World Cup campaign. On that occasion he scored some amazing tries when SBW came off the bench to produce some exquisite off-loads. Unfortunately the luckless Williams has played little rugby because of a series of injuries since the 2016 Rio Olympics. This year he’s played just six Super Rugby games and one test against France.

Should either of the veterans fail to go the course, the impressive Faiane is capable of stepping into the breech and doing a fine job. Hopefully coach Umaga will return classy speedster Rieko Ioane to the wing instead of experimenting with him in the midfield. Ironically, Auckland are playing a far more cohesive game than the Blues have managed thanks largely to their more accurate passing which is also a feature of the Super

Rugby champion Crusaders. Meanwhile the appointment of coach Noeline Taurua and captain Laura Langman has given the Silver Ferns a much needed boost despite starting the Quad Series with a heavy loss to England. That was followed by a massive win against South Africa (who took England to the wire) and a brave 60-55 loss to the champion Australian Diamonds whose international rookies rose to the occasion spectacularly. The inability of the Ferns to combat the height and accuracy of shooters Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett proved the decisive factor. While the lively Langman offered the midfield snap and direction and Maria Folau goaled beautifully against a tight, robust defence, the Diamonds had too much speed and cohesion throughout the court. However it was a massive improvement on the Ferns’ dismal Commonwealth Games failure although coach Taurua will know that this Australian team looks set to rule the roost for a long time. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

TEACHING STYLE:

Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!” Fees During Term: Casual $ 50 per hour 10 Hours $450 ($45 per hour) 20 Hours $800 ($40 per hour)

ith six Mitre Cup rugby wins to date, unbeaten Auckland are playing a superior pass and catch game than the Blues have managed for too many fumbling years. That is a tribute to new coach Alama Ieremia who has among his assistants experienced former Blues and All Blacks coach, Sir Graham Henry. Making a good fist of captaining the team is 23-year-old Pakuranga second-five Tinoai Faiane who, along with flanker clubmate Dalton Papali’i, was one of the stars in the latest 31-30 triumph against Taranaki. Halfback Jonathan Ruru and goalkicking first-five Harry Plummer combine nicely and there is plenty of attacking thrust offered by centre Tumua Manu, fullback Jordon Trainor and wings Salesi Rayasi and Melani Nanai. There is a lot of talent among that lot but most will struggle to make the Blues’ starting 15 next year when head coach Tana Umaga will have the highly regarded Leon MacDonald and Tom Courtney as his assistants. The acquisition of North Harbour and Chiefs All Black prop Karl Tu’inukuafe will present the Blues with a powerful front row along with
