SUPPORTING BOTANY TOWN CENTRE FOR 15 YEARS
Could a shopping centre be the focus of a sense of place, purpose and wellbeing in our communities? For many locals, Botany Town Centre is just that. It has been the heart of our community for 15 years – and as the centre celebrates its milestone fifteenth birthday this month, we take a look at what makes the place tick.
A
n estimated eight million people visit Botany Town Centre each year to shop, eat, run errands, take part in the many events and celebrations it has hosted over the years, as well as spending time with family and friends in a safe and friendly environment. Botany Town Centre takes a leaf out of the true town centre concept, and has become more than just a shopping centre to its community – it is known as an urban oasis amongst a bustling and vibrant suburb for its extensive gardens, greenery, fruit trees and open spaces. The centre is uniquely positioned to play host to a multitude of cultural festivities and occasions, which have not only left an imprint on locals’ hearts, but created bonds and many fond memories for regular locals. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has an affinity for the centre and has been a tremendous support for the many initiatives. Jami-Lee says, “For 15 years Botany Town Centre has been a vital part in the growth and development of the local community. It has transformed over the years from just a shopping centre to somewhere locals can come to enjoy the space, eat and meet friends.” The centre’s annual Community Day, which accomodates four dozen local organisations and service providers, speaks directly to the needs and aspirations of the community’s melting pot of cultures. Mark van Wijk, Community Day organiser and ongoing Botany supporter says, “The community-minded spirit that is evident at Botany Town Centre has enabled people to

Locals of all ages get the chance to interact with their two- and four-legged heroes, while learning about the dayto-day activities of emergency services. As well as the yearly favourites, Botany Town Centre is focused on ensuring the interests and needs of all in the community are met through a variety of events and support campaigns – from hosting Sensory Santa sessions (which provides a safe environment for children with sensory disorders to interact with Santa in a quiet environment), movie premieres, outdoor cinema screenings, busking competitions, local talent shows and, in a recent shopping centre first for New Zealand, a Dog Adoption Drive that made national news.
Botany Town Centre invited DC Rescue Dogs to help bring together dog-lovers and homeless pups and educate people of all ages on dog safety. The dogs were rescued from overrun Auckland pounds and introduced to would-be adoptive families in a safe and accessible environment. The adoption drive saved 15 dogs from death row and locals made generous donations of kennels, bedding and food. Botany Town Centre continues to work collaboratively with its community to develop initiatives for residents to get the most out of the Town Centre, its busy bus hub and to make the area an even better place to live, work and play.

Making the most of the leaf-lined streets surrounding Botany Town Centre, the annual Summer Fun Run and Walk (now in its eighth year) is a key date in the calendar for many locals – more than 500 people take part annually. The event boasts a number of veteran participants and offers a boost for people of all fitness levels, with the option of walking or running a 5km or 10km circuit which starts and finishes at the centre. The event is also a successful supporter of many local charities. Sirens and lights take over Town Centre Drive and the ASB Bank car park during the ever-popular Everyday Heroes

proud to be a part of Botany Town Centre
All progressive communities are sustainability-minded, and Botany Town Centre’s work towards a greener future dates back to the centre’s opening in 2001, and has grown through multiple community campaigns and business sustainability initiatives. A prominent milestone was the centre’s 1 + 1 = TREE campaign, which funded the planting of thousands of native trees by local schoolchildren. The (literally ground-breaking) initiative had an indelible effect on the child participants, who can be proud that the trees they planted stand maturely 10 years on.

nationwide first was achieved recently when a shopping centre community garden was planted and harvested within the Town Centre. The garden grows seasonal produce year-round for those in the community needing extra support. A key partner is the Botany branch of the charity Bellyful, which makes meals for new mums and families.

The garden continues to flourish through Tui Garden Products sponsoring plant protection products and the Centre’s landscapers maintaining and caring for the produce. A crucial element is Botany Town Centre’s super-sustainable ‘grind to ground’ initiative, which uses leftover coffee grounds as a natural fertiliser. says of the garden, “A project like this was a first for New Zealand shopping centres, and we loved going back to our roots as a community hub and re-centralising the green and botanist ideals of Botany Town Centre. It’s now being used not just as a food producer but a tool for education by in-centre childcare services and some of the surrounding schools. “We also have the Heritage Roses behind New World and near Briscoes and we continue to support bird life by maintaining our storm water pond near Te Irirangi Drive.” Indeed, the centre’s sustainability focus is in its foundations. New Zealand’s largest retail development when it opened 15 years ago, the centre accommodates environmental principles relating to building orientation, storm water management, and measures to reduce light production and water use alongside optimizing energy performance. For its efforts the centre earned a coveted International Council of Shopping Centres award for Design in 2003, making it the only southern hemisphere winner that year. The centre’s approach to environmental social governance (ESG) management encompasses strategies to reduce waste, energy and water use. A comprehensive waste recycling strategy is in place and over the last 5 years Botany Town Centre and its retailers have diverted over 3,900 cubic metres of cardboard, office paper, loose plastic film, containers and glass from the landfill. This is equivalent to one and half Olympic sized swimming pools of recyclable material! Centre-wide connections to the Building Management System enable effective management, tracking and reduction of energy and

Botany Town Centre supports this service through complimentary mobility equipment, while a selection of cafes provide free coffee or tea. Over the past 15 years, the centre has joined forces with organisations such as the local Howick RSA and Lions Club to raise funds in support of those in need. Hundreds of poppies handcrafted by local students for
the centre’s centennial ANZAC tribute were planted by the RSA and Bellyful in a remembrance garden at the centre, cementing a tribute to fallen New Zealand heroes by grateful young Kiwis. Botany Town Centre’s layout, wide pedestrian pathways and convenient orientation of buildings are important design aspects that allow the centre to serve everyone in the community. A pattern for success in the digi-fashion age
F
rom the on-trend and fashionable array of apparel stores found in the appropriately named Fashion Pavilion, to the everyday, fresh and hip style found down The Lane, Botany Town Centre is arguably one of Auckland’s foremost destinations when it comes to updating the wardrobe. The centre’s resident stylist, and self-confessed ‘mum of the burbs’, Kerry Finlay is a known and welcome presence both in-centre and on Botany Town Centre’s website through her popular seasonal trend blogs. Of her role as the centre’s stylist, Kerry says, “The biggest and most satisfying part of my role is in taking the fear out of shopping, by bridging the gap between shoppers and retailers. Feeling confident that you can get your clothing purchases right, and knowing that you don’t need to spend loads of money is the best skill that I can impart. “I’m a Howick girl and a mother of three, so I really do feel at home at Botany Town Centre, and love the sense of community there. It’s such a treat when wandering around the centre to have a shopper come up to me raving about a piece of jewellery or clothing that I had previously recommended.” Fostering young creative talent in the community has also been
a priority for the centre, which is evident in the recent Botany Design Awards which gave aspiring local fashion designers the opportunity to pursue their dream careers. Young entrants were able to showcase their designs at the centre and past winners have received career kickstarters in the form of scholarships and industry work experience. The centre’s fashion-forward focus also embraces the vast digital world. In 2013, Botany became the first shopping centre in the country to launch a predominantly digitally focussed competition in which the winning candidate could shop for free, in turn creating ‘shopping haul’ video blogs about their clothing, accessory and homeware purchases. The centre was thrilled to appoint the winning vlogger, Britney Hazeldine, as an ambassador and resident vlogger. Britney creates regular collaborative YouTube videos showcasing her shopping excursions to the centre. The competition and subsequent appointment helped to kick-starting Britney’s career; she says “It’s been really fun for me, it’s such a good way to connect to the community, especially the centre’s younger customers.” Through her work with the centre and her own website, Scout & Company, Britney’s online presence has grown dramatically.

here are sewing thread spools of every colour and shade you can ever think of. No ordinary seamstress, Gigi Tam,
owner Sewing Bee Clothing Alterations, Dry Cleaning and Curtain Making at Botany Town Centre, has an amazing collection of 5000 colourful threads that is a match for any clothing alteration garment and over 1000 heavy cotton threads for jean alteration. Having worked with one of New Zealand’s top designers as a pattern maker, Gigi offers
a lot more than alternations done at run-ofthe mill alteration shops. The skilled seamstress who moved to New Zealand 25 years ago from Hong Kong has also tailored period costumes for an Asian movie that won the Hong Kong Film Awards. Gigi has a lot more plans up her well-tailored sleeve as she is excited about starting sewing classes for young girls. “I plan to have them in three batches from the elementary to pattern making and tailoring for the elderly,” she says as she wants to share her knowledge with the younger generation. Those interested can book their place by calling Gigi on 021 024 90189. The store also offers measuring services. Sewing Bee has been part of Botany Town Centre since 2001 when the town centre was newly built. Zealand Institute of Education and MSL Training, Lollipops Educare, Our Place Educare and the weekly Botany Tots storytime session, the centre accommodates every facet of life. As the saying goes, ‘behind every great community is a great library’ and the Botany Library holds an impressive range of books, CDs, DVDs and other collections. It is also frequented by book lovers of all ages during the much-loved kid’s club and adult’s book clubs. Locals will also find the library is home to a Justice of the Peace service. Creating an enjoyable and safe environment for local families is a vital part of the mix and the centre has enjoyed an ongoing working relationship with the community constable. To ensure the community remains safe and has access to support when needed, the centre has sponsored tenancies for the Botany Crime Watch Patrol and the recently re-opened Citizens Advice Bureau. Over the years the Centre has hosted many local schools, charities and community groups both in Town Square and also in The Conservatory where the various groups have been able to access the free community site to raise funds or highlight their cause. The ongoing relationship with these groups and the Botany community is at the heart of what Botany Town Centre is all about.

s people and society grow and change, so too should the focal points of our communities. For those in the eastern suburbs, Botany Town Centre has assumed the role of community custodian for the past 15 years. It has grown with the community, listened to its needs and matured into the vibrant civic heart it is today. Can a town centre create an emotional connection with its community? Botany Town Centre seems to have found the success formula through not only its design, layout and range of shops and services, but by ensuring everything it does and stands for in the community has heart and purpose. There is more to this centre than simply being a place to browse the shops and grab a coffee – it’s a place of commonality for the surrounding far-reaching and culturally diverse suburbs. Central to its ethos as a town centre and in addition to a vast retail offering, Botany Town Centre plays host to a range of vital services and amenities that are relevant to a multicultural, constantly diversifying area. “We have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for 3 years, we enjoy how accessible the layout is and well positioned the shops are.” – Sarah
We spent some time chatting to the Botany community and asked them what they love most about coming to the centre. This is what they had to say!
at Botany Town Centre
“I have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for years, more than 10 in fact. I started coming here when I worked at one of the retail stores in the centre and have never stopped. My family and I love the outdoor areas and coming to the community garden.” – Mandy “We have been coming to Botany Town Centre for a number of years. We live quite far away but always like to pop back to the centre. We were just saying to each other how well set out everything is, it definitely beats other shopping centres in our view which is why we choose to travel here. We love the gardens and outdoor area... oh, and the coffee!” – Graham
“I have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for 6 years – I’m usually here every week, 3 times a week. My kids have virtually grown up here. My favourite thing is the outdoor open space down Garden Lane, it’s my family’s little hang out. We attend many of the events that take place here, like the recent dog adoption day.” – Nina
KC11639
“We’ve been coming to Botany Town centre our whole life! We busk at the centre every second week and some of the money we raise is donated to Red Cross. Our favourite memories of the centre relate to our performances here thanks to the vibe and the people – we have never had a negative comment. We remember the centre’s Busk-a-thon competition and would love to see this return!” – Ben “We have been coming to Botany Town Centre since we were babies, so at least 15 years. We love the selection of shops and the food! We come here every week, and our friends live near-by so we can easily just catch the bus into the centre.” – Jack “We have been shopping here for 15 years – it’s our local. It’s very accommodating to our kids and we love sitting upstairs and having coffee and knowing that our kids are safe. They always have things to do for our kids! We recently came to the Panda Party and it was so much fun. I have also had my children’s birthday party here so it’s a place that holds many fond memories.” – Mayada KC11638
