Council matters... August is often regarded as one of winter’s worst months but at least we are a step closer to spring and daylight hours are getting longer. I’ve always worked on about an extra 30 minutes of daylight a month after the shortest day and, although this can vary, I calculate that we are now benefiting from at least 34 minutes of added daylight since the winter solstice. That really cheers me!

RISQUE THINKING: Why should we pick up tickets to Enchanté Cabaret? Well, with at least two top locals performing – Sophia St Villier (pictured on this month’s cover) and Lily Loca – this cavorting cabaret is bound to offer a night to remember. With female empowerment at its core, the modern burlesque/ cabaret revival is proving many Kiwis are still keen to embrace a little titillation. See page 6 for details. On a personal note, I am also cheered to see a former colleague and past editor of EastLife’s parent company, Times Newspapers Ltd, Phil Taylor, standing for council after a vacancy was left by the sad passing of former Howick councillor, Dick Quax. Phil was editor of Howick and Pakuranga Times and Botany and Ormiston Times for a number of years and is known for various voluntary roles. He is also a regular DJ on the not-for-profit community radio, EAST FM, which broadcasts through Howick. Of course, coming from a family with wide musical connections, I also know Phil as a talented drummer whose music knowledge has furnished me with some great EastLife articles. But knowing he also has a sound understanding of local body politics and excellent communication skills, I can see why he is keen to be an

advocate on council for his (and our) community. Because he always keeps in perspective that Howick ward is part of the greater Auckland picture where its voice should not just be heard but have an impact, I have to wish him well. Other locals candiates include Jessica Collings, Jim Donald, Damian Light, Olivia Montgomery and Paul Young so, ‘may the best man or woman win!” But, right now I don’t believe Auckland ratepayers are on to a winner with Auckland Council’s proposal to provide $1million in funding towards the design and development of a 30 plus metre statue of Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, on the headland of Bastion Point (Takaparawhau). I’ve always admired cities which feature an abundance of artworks and statuary (for example, Aussie neighbour, Melbourne) but when I heard about council’s commitment to the Ngati Whatua o Orakei proposal, I was flabbergasted. Normally, I would have no issue with a recognisable monument, representative of our Maori heritage, towering high above the Waitemata Harbour. However, at a time when the city is struggling with many social issues from homelessness and housing needs to poor mental health support, neighbourhood crime (such as shop invasions) and

hospital upgrades, not to mention Auckland’s biggie – transport and congestion – it seems a friend’s rye comment that perhaps this statue should be a ‘white elephant’ was pretty much on the money. This is not the time to be asking ratepayers to fork out more for what is essentially, ‘non essential’ particularly when wages in many sectors have barely moved in years yet costs keep rising. I’ve sucked up Auckland’s fuel tax and grudgingly accept further proposed government fuel taxes, but when council seems to have little civic pride in keeping our berms (and other public places) free of rubbish and overgrowth (I wonder what tourists think of them), I am not keen to pay for a statue – no matter now significant – at this time. Of course, how the people of Ngati Whatua o Orakei spend their money is up to them and if they are happy to foot the entire bill then the choice is theirs. It shouldn’t be something with which ratepayers have no choice.

ECOLOGY FOCUS OF ESTUARY ART AWARDS Marion Wassenaar couldn’t have been more delighted when she was named winner of this year’s Estuary Art and Ecology Prize at an awards ceremony held at Howick’s Malcolm Smith Gallery, Uxbridge Arts and Culture. The only contemporary art prize in Aotearoa New Zealand with ecology at its core, entries were required to reflect the ecological value of the Tamaki Estuary and encourage action against its pollution. STAR-SPANGLED NIGHT There were no fireworks but there was plenty of the red, white and blue when the Rotary Club of Somerville celebrated its 2018 changeover of presidents on the Fourth of July, the USAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Independence Day. Nunsense the Mega-Musical, 4-18 August 2018 “A Hail of fun and frolic” – The New York Times When the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters with her Vichyssoise soup, they are in dire need of funds for the burials. They decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. They take over the school auditorium, currently set for the eighth grade production, and mayhem ensues. Q&A Kate Hargraves with st john volunteer

With National Volunteer Week recently in the news, EastLife decided that the work undertaken by more than 9000 St John volunteers across the country was too important to overlook. We asked Kate Hargraves about her role as a St John community volunteer assisting patients and family at Auckland Hospital’s emergency department.

How long have you been a St John community volunteer and what prompted the decision? I have been a Friend of the Emergency Department Volunteer with St John for almost five years and my idea to join came from being a patient myself in the Emergency Dept. This was when I realised that this volunteer work existed. I put it on my ‘to do’ list as I considered it would be a terrific way to give something back What does your role as a Friend of the Emergency Department (FED) involve? It’s really all about help and support for patients and for hospital staff. When you are admitted to the Emergency Department it’s hardly what would have been planned for the day so, at short notice, a patient can need many things such as contact with family, directions on where to be found, or return to, some company, a cup of tea or even a phone charger! As FED volunteers we also assist by serving meals to the patients and helping with tasks which nurses would love to do but often don’t have that extra time to give. How much time do you devote to this role? I work a four-hour afternoon/ evening shift each week and I have always worked the same shift so I am the ‘Tuesday Girl’. You must assist people from all walks of life, cultures and different circumstances how difficult is this? The diversity of the people we meet gives me a strong awareness of how different everyone’s life is; you develop a skill for working closely with people from different cultures,

backgrounds and situations. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of my volunteer work as sometimes I absolutely know in these situations I have provided comfort, support and reassurance to patients. Do you every find your role distressing and if so why? Many patients in ED are elderly, and are often there as a result of accidents or a fall. After spending time with them it is sometimes apparent that when they return home they have very little or no family support and I worry as to how they will cope on their own. What about the rewards? Can you recall a time when you felt you had really helped someone and that the outcome was especially rewarding? For me this work is very rewarding; it is often about how happy a patient or family member is when provided with a cup of tea and a magazine after hours of waiting but there is a greater reward from those who say little but are comforted by you being with them. Patients may speak little or no English but still know you care about them, even as a stranger. I know then that I make a difference to someone who is having an upsetting and stressful time. Do you ever see any of the patients/family you support again? Yes, from time to time I do, I might meet people in my local area or at the shops and, funnily, when they see me they will say, “I know you,” however, they seldom remember from where. On realising I was the FED helper at Auckland Hospital we usually have a joke about it. It’s a happy time seeing them well and out and about.

Overall what is the most satisfying part of being a volunteer? Knowing that I have helped someone at a most difficult time, I am aware that if I were in their place, (as I have been), how comforted I would be by this sort of kindness and support. How does your role differ from that of an operational volunteer? St John is well known for its operational volunteers who provide emergency medical care to the community either by working on ambulances, or by providing first aid at community events. But there are also community volunteers who, like me, provide non-clinical, community-based services, such as the youth programme, Caring Callers, the St John Health Shuttle, Friends of the Emergency Department and more. Did you need any special qualifications or training to volunteer to do the work you are doing? It is important to have genuine care for people and very good people skills. St John provides comprehensive training for this role. St John provides many different services, what are some of the volunteer roles our local people can fulfil locally? Further to those mentioned above there is Therapy Pets and, of course, we have more wonderful volunteers who run St John Op Shops which fundraise to support local ambulance stations. Is there any age restriction to being a volunteer (within reason that is)? For many of our volunteer roles, we

have an age limit of 18. If someone is under the age of 18 but keen to help, they should get in touch with St John or maybe pop into their local Op Shop and see if you can lend a hand. Do you do any other voluntary work and if so in what areas? I am a volunteer with several organisations in particular the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. For the past four years I have been area co-ordinator for the foundation’s national street appeal (often known as the pink ladies) overseeing 8-10 sites. I am also Auckland co-ordinator for the Uplift Project, an organisation which sends bras to Pacific women in need. Last year we sent 15,000 bras to Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu. This year I am also helping the Auckland City Mission with their Auckland street appeal running in November and December. As a retired business person, volunteer work is my new role and I love it. Kindness is always my guide. If you could be Minister of Health for a day what would be the first thing you would do? A complete review of all hospital staff operation and performance and make 100% sure they are correctly rewarded for the work they do. If you could ask any three people to dinner (living or dead) who would they be and why? Elvis Presley – dinner at Gracelands would be the ultimate fan experience; Mother Teresa – to learn more about her life, first hand, and her mission of kindness to all; Martin Luther King – to personally hear him speaking would be such an inspiration, wise words the world needs more of. www.eastlife.co.nz

Blue Vanuatu Air Vanuatu’s wide-reaching call ‘to explore Vanuatu’ convinced EastLife editor hELEn PERRY that the time was right to fulfil a long time ambition to visit this melanesian nation. so, recently, she booked a weeklong escape which also served to celebrate her husband’s retirement after a 55-year working career.

The thought of man about the house coming home from work one day and not going back again – ever – was overwhelming. For most of his working life he worked six days a week and for the past 20 years he worked every weekend so i wasn’t at all sure how i would cope with his being home every day of the year. Rather than deal with it, i decided we should escape – to Vanuatu. i couldn’t have made a wiser decision. i have fallen in love with the island of Efate and its people and i’m enamoured with Breakas Beach Resort where we stayed, about 10 minutes drive from downtown Port Vila. Right on the foreshore, this adults-only resort (18 years and over) with its ‘20 somethings’, ‘30 somethings’, ‘we’re in our 40’s’ and ‘baby boomers’ too, suited us perfectly.

Built around the year 2000 and owned independently by an Australian businessman, Breakas sits right on the beach among lush rainforest trees and beautiful foliage offering 60 plus individual fale (bures) which were comfortably appointed – i loved the outer, rock-ringed bathrooms, some with semi open air showers, others fully roofed. indeed, the accommodation was spacious and welcoming with hibiscus flowers adding a colourful Pacific note. Tiled floors, king size bed, additional divan, outdoor furniture, traditional thatched roofs – their water tightness during one or two heavy downpours, amazed me – and plenty of room to swing our shell welcome necklaces, meant we were very pleasantly accommodated. not to be compared with the likes of five star Ballagio in Las Vegas, nevertheless Breakas was charming and also afforded us privacy but be prepared for no

TV or WiFi in the fales although television was available in The hut and free Wifi in the foyer lounge, bar and restaurant. We especially enjoyed the terrace restaurant which opened to the pool (beautifully lit at night) and the beach front. The bar area at one end, with its daily happy hour, was always well patronised while on the other side, The hut catered for large dining crowds and also for weddings and small conferences (up to 50 people) amply providing for a variety of needs. i especially loved the adjacent bijou gazebo, lavishly set for two when romantic occasions call for that special dinner celebration. This was further complemented by foreshore dining al fresco style when the weather permits, particularly lovely for in house weddings (see sidebar page 16). There was so much to like about Breakas but for me the appeal

lay in the type of accommodation provided. We could easily have opted for a concrete high-rise or a large, less personal resort, but here, a bond quickly developed between guests with some opting to share outings or to dine together. Yet, for those seeking space or quietude, the poolside or beachfront loungers were places to laze while a daily walk along the foreshore or through treed areas generated an atmosphere of calm and beauty. What’s more, accommodation packages nearly always include a half hour massage and a half hour scuba lesson. i didn’t take up the latter but, wow, that massage was heavenly. i have no compunction about returning to Breakas especially as regular specials such as pay for five days (from $150 per day) and receive an extra two days free, shouldn’t ‘break-as’ the bank. in my mind it fitted the bill perfectly. www.eastlife.co.nz

Behind every efficient hotel is a good manager and at Breakas Beach Resort, there are not one but two very good managers heading the house. New Zealand-born, Isaac Boyle has been the resort’s general manager for the past four years although he has been in Vanuatu for eight years all told. Isaac, whose wife Anna Abbock is Ni Vanuatu and operates a wedding and events service, speaks fluent Bislam (the archipelago’s official language. “I actually started my hotel career as a chef at the Heritage Hotel in Christchurch,” he says. “I ended up travelling extensively and during that time transitioned from back of house to front of house working or living in Rarotonga, Fiji and now Vanuatu, which has totally become home. “Both my children were born here and will attend a French speaking school so they will be multi-lingual. I love the community spirit and the warmth

“What’s more, my workplace couldn’t be in a more lovely location with the sea at our door, fresh produce from our community-based garden, and loyal staff. I don’t see me moving back to New Zealand though it’s nice to visit once in a while.” Isaac says he is particularly lucky to have Roy Ernst as the hotel’s Food and Beverage manager and it didn’t take me long too appreciate why. Roy conducted the orientation gathering when we arrived at Breakas, his outlining of resort amenities and services as well as informative advice about Efate’s

When I first ventured this way around 1980 it was to sail around the islands and during that time I fell in love with Vanuatu and ended up opening the Waterfront Bar & Grill in Port Vila, still there today and well patronised. The people accept what they have and are really happy. ‘The food is good – everything is grown organically, no fertilisers or pesticides here – we use Santo beef [from Vanuatu’s Santo Island] in our restaurant, we have fish from the sea and an abundance of fruit and vegetables. We also have kava… it’s strong but medicinally it really does have a purpose. However, we do warn tourists, one glass is enough!”

FLYinG on A hiGh! i’ve enjoyed my fair share of international travel over the years but never one quite so convivial as that of Air Vanuatu’s return flight to new Zealand after my weeklong stay at Port Vila. i don’t think i’ve ever encountered a time when virtually the whole flight was in fits of laughter – loud laughter – as we watched the in-house screening of a ‘Candid Camera’ style series of laugh a minute skits. it started with just a few contained giggles then, gradually, as more people looked up at their screens, the chuckles turned to clamorous guffaws which just accelerated

with preschoolers Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner Caryn Mawkes suggests how children’s cooking fun can establish early learning skills. Did you know that cooking with your child is the best way to teach principles of good nutrition and encourage healthy eating habits for life. Studies have shown that children are more likely to try new foods (i.e. fruit and vegetables) when they have a hand in preparing them. And, as children are exposed to new ingredients, they are also expanding their stock of acceptable foods, setting them on a path to be ‘good eaters’ for life. But, did you also know that cooking gives pre-schoolers an early grounding in science, math, language, art, and even reading? The kitchen offers abundant lessons in basic chemistry – discovering how certain ingredients combine, react, and change as they cook. Getting your child to describe what he/she sees, tastes, and feels feeds their vocabulary. It also exposes children to an array of different colours and textures and provides them with a whole new creative palette. Basic math skills, from simple counting to fractions, can be introduced in the kitchen. As you add ingredients to the bowl or pan, ask your child to count along with you. Introduce the concept of fractions with the use of measuring cups and spoons. Preschoolers can

understand the definition of ‘half’ even if it’s too early for them to learn much more. Cooking can promote both language and literacy. When cooking with your children, and using a recipe, read it out loud together, introducing your child to new words and terms. For pre-schoolers, even if they can’t yet read, this will help introduce letters, promote literacy and build their vocabulary. As children grow older, they can continue to reap the benefits of cooking. For example, cooking foreign cuisine can introduce them to different cultures. While in the kitchen, talk to your child about how the food and ingredients look, feel, smell and taste. Generally, picky eaters, who have helped prepare food, and like its look and smell, will be more willing to give new foods and dishes a try. While grocery shopping, invite your child to find different fruits and veggies they haven’t tried before and then incorporate their choices into your meal plans. Fine motor skills are enhanced when little fingers tear, stir, and pour. Enjoy this quality time in the kitchen with your child, you never know they could be a ‘Master Chef’ in the making.

“Life is more complicated now and we seem to want more for ourselves and our children,” she says. “In a competitive world education is key but expensive, and parents often feel pressure to provide the very best for their children. But if we just spend time listening to our kids we can help consolidate familial relationships more than providing ‘things’ can.” Ms Chatwin’s comments follow the publication of new research by Sanitarium Weet-Bix, released as part of the company’s Simple is Good campaign. More than half of the survey’s respondents said they felt under more pressure to provide for their families than their own parents with most concerned that digital devices were negatively impacting their family life. “Work life balance is a constant struggle for some families and parents who work to support themselves and families can feel like they are burning the candle at both ends; balance takes time and planning.” To help parents enjoy the simple life, Ms Chatwin has provided some basic advice: • Plan! Simple is good when it comes to everyday, family meals. Whole foods and raw fruit and vegetables can be quick and healthy! ViVo’s EVERYDAY hairos This month TEREZE TABER talks with one of Vivo hair & Beauty’s Everyday hairos as she raises money for the Cancer society When her workmate Earl died of lung cancer last summer, olivia Keiser’s idea of shaving her head to raise money for cancer suddenly became something she had to do.

Seeing red colour favourites tend to dominate our wardrobes, our decor, our gardens and even our mood with the various hues being applauded or rejected. red is the one colour that can’t be ignored. It signifies passion, power, fire, energy, courage, ambition, action, eroticism, seduction, lust, blood, war, danger, strength, leadership, excitement, anger…and so the list goes on. People all over the world love red – a red ferrari, red shoes, a red rose or a red dress can define one’s personality. It can excite our physical senses, stimulate the appetite, and grab one’s attention. Women at a party wearing red may feel strong and sexy but, take note, other women may tighten their grip on their partners!

Some say it’s best to avoid red when entering any sort of negotiations especially where situations could become tense – the high visibility of red may spell danger!. on the other hand, when it comes to selling, red may prompt buyers to take action and, of course, when a night of romance and passion is on the cards, what better colour than red? red is also a significant colour in many cultures. for example, red was used by ancient romans to dress their Gods, a red kimono in Japan defines good luck and happiness, in India and china brides traditionally wear red to bring good luck but in South africa it is the colour of mourning and in the russian language, red means beautiful – surely readers won’t dispute that?

The 17-year-old’s voice becomes soft with the memory of her friend. “Earl worked in the pack house part of the building with me. i’m not sure if he was sick before i started there, but it happened pretty quickly.” Earl was not the first person olivia had known to have cancer. “i have family members in south Africa who have been sick. But it was the first time i had seen its effects first-hand.” Eager to fundraise for the Cancer society in 2016, olivia took part in Walking stars, a midnight half marathon through Auckland City. Then in 2017, with waist length hair, she had the idea of donating it for a wig. olivia had 36cms of her hair cut for Freedom Wigs and she gave the payment to the Cancer society.

Through a friend, she had heard that Vivo often supported local fundraising events with hair vouchers. Vivo were soon on board and, as a kick-start to olivia’s fundraising, the company gave her a $150 voucher to raffle before the event. Vivo gave olivia a second voucher of $250 to raffle on the actual day of the shave and, naturally, they provided a professional hairdresser to do the job right! Plans were made to shave olivia’s hair in a public space where interest would be generated and where there was a chance to raise more money. A station was set up outside Vivo howick and, in front of a curious crowd in the heart of howick village, two Vivo stylists plaited olivia’s hair into sections before cutting them off for the donation.

she knew then that she wanted to donate hair again, but at the time of Earl’s death, it wasn’t quite long enough to just cut it.

“To have enough length it had to be shaved,” she says matter of factly. so, that’s what she decided to do. however, olivia not only wanted to donate her hair, she wanted to use the event to raise money for the Cancer society.

“my head isn’t nearly as cold as everyone told me it would be!” olivia exclaimed, with a big smile, running her hand over her newlyshaved head. “Thank you so much Vivo for supporting me, i couldn’t have done this otherwise”.

The risk of optic nerve damage and visual field loss remains with a glaucoma patient for life, so it is important to be fastidious with treatment regimens and ensure you attend scheduled appointments with your ophthalmologist or glaucomaaccredited optometrist. • Healthy weight: A high BMI is associated with high IOP, but there is conflicting evidence about the association with glaucoma. A high BMI is also linked to sleep apnoea. • Sleep apnoea syndrome: Is associated with glaucoma, so if you snore, exclude sleep apnoea.

Consider your lifestyle • Aerobic exercise: Walking, jogging, cycling or swimming lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) and blood pressure. • Healthy blood pressure: While high blood pressure is not associated with high eye pressure, patients with hypertension are likely to have compromised circulation to the optic nerve, therefore it should be controlled through medication or lifestyle changes. On the flip side; if blood pressure is over treated this can also contribute to glaucoma progression, again due to poor blood flow to the optic nerve head. • Cholesterol: Treatment of high blood cholesterol is recommended, but also a diet high

My first year of training at dental school in 1985 was just before AIDS was discovered. We simply washed our hands and didn’t wear gloves. AIDS changed everything. Standards of cleaning and infection control which we use now were just not thought about then and every year our standards have been raised higher and higher. For example, our sterilisation room has advanced equipment, very rigid procedures in place and constant checks of compliance with worldwide codes. Back then I couldn’t dream of the technology which we almost take for granted because we use it every day. The use of lasers in dentistry was unheard of; now we use lasers for many surgical procedures in the mouth, the advantages being improved healing times and comfort. CAD CAM technology allows us to manufacture restorations and crowns that replace missing parts of teeth accurately and beautifully in one appointment. Digital X-rays, which significantly reduce the amount of radiation, and three dimensional cone beam images which reveal issues not otherwise seen, are

smoKED sAUsAGE sTRoGAnoFF (KORV STROGANOFF) Serves 4, Prep time: 15 mins, cooking time: 30 mins This is a great swedish comfort-food classic from The Little Swedish Kitchen, but one you’re unlikely to see served outside of work canteens or someone’s home. it’s usually served with rice, but i like to serve mine with pasta and add a few (elderberry) capers to the sauce for a bit of a kick.

A knob of butter 1 large onion, peeled and finely chopped 350g falukov or smoked sausage, very finely diced 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp paprika 130ml single cream sea salt and black pepper 400g tagliatelle or pappardelle 2 tbsp capers or eldercapers (see page 287 of The Little Swedish Kitchen • A handful of finely chopped fresh chives

mEthoD Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil for the tagliatelle or pappardelle. Put the butter, onion and sausage into a large pan. Fry, stirring occasionally, until the sausage and onion are golden. Add the tomato puree, mustard, paprika and cream, continuing to stir so the flavours mingle, and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Taste for seasoning and adjust to taste. Add the pasta to the pan of boiling water. Cook for 7 minutes (or according to packet instructions). Drain the pasta, reserving a small mug full (around 80ml) of pasta water. Add the mug of pasta water to the sausage sauce. stir in with the capers and take off the heat. Toss the pasta in the sauce until well coated, and sprinkle over the chives. serve immediately. Get ahead: The sauce can be made the day before (just don’t add the chives at this stage) and then warmed up gently when you need it. You can also freeze the sauce in an airtight container for up to a month. Simply add the pasta water as stated above just before serving, and cook the pasta fresh. www.eastlife.co.nz

Home good living Prospect howick’s stockade hill is well known to most Aucklanders even those living outside of the suburb. But visitors, and even locals, may not be familiar with Prospect hill – the name originally given to a restored 19th century villa located virtually on stockade hill and recently listed for sale. hELEn PERRY took a closer look at this landmark’s past and its present day owners. Auckland’s historic houses hardly compare with those found throughout Europe but at 155 years old – at least in part – Prospect hill is indeed a grand old lady. i actually viewed the property when it went on the market some 11 years ago and marvelled at its history, gardens and ambience – just stepping through the gate was a thrill. i could see then how

this gracious property had been cherished so when i heard it was again on the market, i was interested to learn what had occurred in the ensuing years. i was surprised that since 2007 the property has changed hands more than once, its present owners, Geoff and Barbara Thompson, now preparing to sell. “We were absolutely charmed by this property when we brought it and although it had been wonderfully maintained we naturally looked to make our own mark. The Thompsons say, from the outset, they were fascinated by the home’s history. “The main portion of the house, started life as a Fencible Cottage and dates back to 1863,” Geoff says. “it was built on half an acre of land for Captain John Charles irvine, a retired army officer who became the last resident magistrate at the howick Courthouse. he named the property Prospect hill after his family home in ireland. ‘it seems, a lean-to was later added to the back of the house, which also served as a Presbyterian manse, and records indicate that as time went on, various owners came and went including a howick Borough, mayor, the Clifton family, (the house was called Clifton house for the duration), and the Pritchard’s to name a few.” over the years, various changes interfered with the integrity of the original design but when Prospect

hill was owned by Leighton Dixon and his wife, Barbara, the couple commissioned one of new Zealand’s pre-eminent architects, John Gummer to carry out fresh design work. The builder was John Christensen of howick. Both men had a passion for craftsmanship and detail, ensuring work was to the highest quality and in keeping with tradition. The house was re-piled and painted in colours sympathetic to its time in history, the kauri floors were sanded and the lean-to removed from the rear of the house to make way for a new addition. “That was well before our time,” says Barbara, “but, like most owners, we have added our personal touches including insulation in the roof, walls and underfloor.

We have repainted, re-carpeted, and revamped the main bathroom. new floor to ceiling curtains and Roman blinds, as well as automated blinds in the lounge, are added enhancements and we also exposed kauri floorboards in the family area off the kitchen. “As we refurbished, we also noticed what a well built house this is. Exterior timber, the ceilings, floors and gorgeous wrap-around verandah…everything is so well preserved and sturdy.” Keen gardeners, the Thompsons have also added various new plantings to the lush grounds, all in keeping with the style of the property and complemented by the pool, garden art, brick and wrought iron work and more. “it’s such a pleasure to sit in the sunny garden room; it never takes long before we spot such an

abundance of bird life.” With the house in tip top order and beautifully refurbished, there really is nothing for new owners to do. however, because ‘Prospect hill’ has a historic Places Trust listing, it means anyone wanting to make exterior changes in the future will need permission from council and the historic Places Trust. This listing also protects developers from getting their hands on the property, demolishing the house and building multiple dwellings, something the Thompson says would be a tragedy. “We are hopeful new owners will continue to nurture this property’s rich heritage and enjoy its elegant accommodation which includes wide halls, high ceilings, generous bedrooms, study, a fabulous back to back fireplace separating lounge from dining and so much more,” the couple concur. “All this and just a step or two from transport links and howick village, yet so private and secure too.” Prospect hill at 40 Ridge Rd (corner of howe street) howick, is being marketed by Total Focus Property Ltd, www.tfproperty.co.nz

The healthy home Jo built Homes of the past were seldom environmentally friendly but, today, architects, designers and builders are mostly intent on producing houses designed to reduce overall environmental impact during and after construction. JES MAGILL talks to architectural designer Jo Hitchcock about creating sustainable homes. When Jo and Greg Hitchcock bought a three-bedroom, single story Fyfe Home at the northern end of Bucklands Beach Peninsula in 2007, it was the perfect chance for Jo to use just about every sustainable building design principle she’s perfected as an architectural designer with a passion for sustainability.

is the two level void, 6.3m high and 4.5m wide at the front of the home, made possible when the footprint was extended 3.2m. On the ground level, this extension holds the gloriously sunny lounge and on the mezzanine level is Jo’s light-filled office overlooking Musick Point and Howick golf course. Through the office on the south side is the main bedroom and open-plan en suite.

On a north-facing site the home was already ideally positioned for the sun but was in need of some smart energy-efficient design that would create a healthier home for the couple and their children. “You’ll be amazed how many homes aren’t orientated for the sun – it’s the biggest driver in achieving energy efficiency,” Jo says.

Downstairs, the lounge flows through to a large open plan kitchen and living spaces where light and sun come through to varying degrees, depending on the season. Three bedrooms and a bathroom in the children’s east facing wing were renovated and a laundry was also added.

The most dramatic design feature

In preparing for the renovations,

Jo and Greg pulled up the carpet in the living room and found a pristine concrete floor beneath. When additional concrete flooring was laid alongside 40 years later, and both were sanded and polished, they looked virtually the same. “We couldn’t have matched it better had we’d tried,” says Jo. Now an aesthetic feature of the living spaces, the concrete floor is also a vital factor of the home’s energy efficiency. “The two-level void pulls light deep into the plan, especially in winter. The sun comes in at 75 degrees in the summer, which keeps heat penetration to a minimum and, in winter, the angle is 33 degrees, bringing the sun in just about to the middle of the house. It warms the concrete pad during the day and releases the heat later, when the temperature cools.” Underfloor heating was installed in 1971 and that’s still in use in the bathroom and hallway.

The Hitchcocks added a wood burner two years ago and you won’t see any heat pumps here. Jo reckons they’re often relied on because of poor design. Instead, her heating and cooling solutions have a familiar-sounding, down to earth practicality about them. “Hot air rises,” she says, so on occasion, when it gets too warm in her office, she turns on the ceiling fan to circulate the air and push it back down to the living areas. Next in the arsenal of air temperature control are the high windows on the north side, opened by remote control from her desk. If more air flow is needed they’ll open the windows on the south side too, creating a current which pulls the cooler air through. Although the main bedroom faces south, windows to the east and west bring in more light and airflow and the open plan en suite keeps the space airy. Better still, she has a talent for rescuing objects and transforming them into treasured heirlooms. Here she talks to JES MAGILL about some favourite pieces in her own home.

Technically, Jo Hitchcock (right) isn’t sitting on a coffee table in the living room of her Bucklands Beach home, she’s sitting on what used to be a wire wove bed. When she first saw it, surplus to requirements at a Cooks Beach bach, she said to her husband, Greg, “I can do something with this.” Greg was doubtful but Jo loved the angles of the frame and when she shared her vision with her dad for its rebirth as a coffee table, he offered to do the work for her. He threaded steel rods through both sides, added extra rimu planks to form the top, and formed a padded seat down one end. She loves it and she’ll never part with it. The globe on the table beside Jo is

actually a four-dimensional chess set – a very special gift from their neighbour, a design engineer who had emigrated from Poland. In his highly original design, made from custom wood cut on a CNC machine, the chess pieces surrounding the circular board are held in place by magnets. “It’s one of the most precious things we’ve ever received,” Jo says. The lounge suite behind is another family heirloom, a recently recovered 1970’s Morgan lounge suite that belonged to Jo’s nanna. As well as still looking good, this suite has huge sentimental value. As a designer, the story of Morgan Furniture is an important one for Jo.

Too much glazing? “There is such a thing as too much glazing,” says Jo. “People often chase a view to the exclusion of all else but sometimes it’s not worth it.” As well as creating issues for keeping rooms at even temperatures, Jo adds that too much glass creates problems for furniture placement. “I always design with furniture placement

in mind. If there’s glass overload, it restricts where furniture can go. It limits the amount of available wall space too so that placing TV screens and art work becomes problematic.”

FERns sET To FiRE... AGAin When the Black Ferns face the Australian Wallaroos twice in August, a little savage-ry and love (or aroha) for the game will likely go a long way. Although the fixtures will take place prior to the All Blacks v Wallabies tests, Ferns’ number eight, Aroha savage, is quick to point out that these crossditch clashes will not be ‘curtain raisers.’

Considering the fierce rivalry involved, the Ferns could well serve up quite the main course, leaving the ABs supplying just desserts during their Bledisloe Cup encounters. in november, Aroha could well be in the Ferns’ ranks as they attempt to clip the wings of the UsA Eagles at Chicago’s soldier Field. Yet, no test match is ever a lay down misere; during her career – embracing three rugby and one rugby league world cup campaigns – she has seen the quality of international women’s rugby rise. “All the other countries are catching up so it’s getting harder to come up with ways to beat the world,” she says. “But because most of us have been playing rugby (pretty much) since we could walk – it’s our ‘mother game’ – that has to be an advantage to us.” As discussions on pay equity in sport, this apprentice builder believes success on the field is crucial to ensuring rugby’s women have the flexibility needed to train and compete. “i’d like to think women’s rugby could [achieve pay parity] in future. i didn’t even expect to be getting contracts this year, though, so you never know,” Aroha says. “it’s all about bums on seats; the [women’s] game is growing and definitely attracting more and more people to come and watch.”

Storm warning? Aroha savage may have moved on from her old stomping ground of Eden Park, but the former storm loose forward believes Auckland could well be poised to claim the Farah Palmer Cup, as Jon RAWLinson discovered. For 18 years, a storm was raging in new Zealand women’s rugby. Dominating the game to a degree that would make a Crusader envious, the Auckland storm claimed 15 titles from 16 tournaments. For the last two seasons, their trophy cabinet has been missing a most coveted piece of silverware, the Farah Palmer Cup, but it appears the team is a long way from running out of puff. “Auckland’s tradition of success is one that can’t be broken and the team culture there is awesome,” former storm forward, Aroha savage, says. “They’re definitely going through a lull but they are a really strong side so i do expect to see them in the finals again this year.” Aroha played five seasons with the storm (2008-12), winning five

titles in the process, and yet, in 2016 she helped the Counties heat break Auckland’s enviable seven season winning streak. “Years ago, there were way too many girls missing out on provincial rugby because we were all under Auckland. Counties gave more of us a chance to be seen at that next level,” she recalls. “Winning the cup with Counties was massive – it took us three years but we got there.” Following a sojourn to hong Kong last year, this gutsy Black Fern will strengthen the heat. however, her team will have to face the storm without the leadership of inspirational former coach (also an ex-Auckland coach and captain), Davida suasua. Aroha says Davida (who featured in EastLife’s July 2017 issue) leaves big boots to fill.

Defending champs, Canterbury, will likely also be in the mix come september, Aroha believes. “Canterbury will be rearing to go, for sure! They’ll test Auckland, Counties and Bay of Plenty this year. Less listings and average sales numbers Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings. As winter progresses, it appears less and less people are coming to the market; realestate.co.nz shows 338 properties currently for sale in our area. This continues the downward trend from 382 last month and previous months of 403 for May, 441 for April and 459 in March. Sales numbers for our area, just released by REINZ, were 134, two more than June 2017 but down on last month’s 161. Days to sell were 44, up from last month’s 41 days. The median price continues to hover in the $1-1.1 million bracket and rounded out

the month at $1,089,000, up from last month’s $1,049,000. We are 2% up on the median price from 12 months ago and 1% down from 2 years ago. On the ground there are still good numbers attending open homes with there being very genuine buyers. However, many people are having difficulty finding a property to suit. The median for the month, Auckland-wide, was $850,000. In June 2017 the median was $856,000 so, like our local market, Auckland overall has settled back but holds relatively steady.

Days to sell at 40 was the same as last month, but up slightly from June last year which was 38 days. The number of sales across Auckland was 1834, down from May’s 2445. Twelve months ago there were 1822 sales and 12 months prior to that, 2640 which shows how much the market has quietened from its heyday. Sales numbers across the country for June decreased marginally, down to 6034 from 6131 in June 2017. However, the median for the country is up 5.7% to $560,000 from June last year which was $530,000. If excluding Auckland from the national figures, the median is $460,000 – up 7% from the same month last year which indicates it is the Auckland market bringing the national figures back. nEW ACT hAs WiDEREAChinG EFFECT Director at Fencible Law, RiChARD GALBRAiTh, talks about Anti-money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Compliance in 2009 new Zealand passed into law the Anti-money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009 (AmL /CFT). The reason for this legislation is to detect and deter money laundering and the financing of terrorism, to contribute to public confidence in the financial system and to maintain new Zealand’s international reputation. Due to the nature of services provided by law firms, (e.g. transfer of property, establishing trusts), we are seen as a target for money laundering. As a result, from July 1, 2018, all law firms have obligations under the Act. however, we are not the only ones. From october 1, 2018, the Act will apply to accountants and from January 1, 2019, it will apply to real estate agents. What does this mean for our clients? Lawyers are now required to get to know their clients, which may sound easy, especially if you have been with your lawyer for many years. however, nothing is as easy as it seems.

This means we are now legally required to gather more information from you and to take reasonable steps to verify the information provided is correct. At a minimum we will need to obtain the full name, date of birth, nationality and address of our clients and verify this information is correct against a reliable, independent source. The best way to verify your identity would be to bring your passport when engaging our services. We are also required to verify your current address by sighting a document, for example, a utility bill or bank statement. This must be in your name and must not be more than 3 months old. But it doesn’t stop there! if you have a trust or a company, further information is required. “The coalition government conveyed its concerns to the US Embassy in Wellington [relaying our] views,” Mr Peters said. “It appears the US President has heeded the outcry by signing a new Executive Order which allows ‘family unity’.”

M5 doesn’t look a lot different to your everyday 5 Series. No flared guards, no tacky wings and spoilers, no ridiculous graphics. Just a set of tasty wheels, a carbon-fibre roof and a smattering of discreet M5 badges. Under that clean, conservative and sneaky styling lurks a V8 which can be sedate when grandma is riding shotgun, yet can be as subtle as a plane crash when you have a hankering for an automotive adrenaline rush that just keeps on giving. The twin turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 is carried over from the previous M5, albeit with a bit of a tickle-up that has boosted power and torque to mind-altering 441kW (close to 600hp) and 750Nm respectively. clutch. Want a manual? Tough luck. But don’t sweat the lack of a third pedal; the auto is superb, and paddle shifts make it entertaining. The extra grunt and the lack of a manual aren’t M5’s headline news. For the first time in history, an M car is all-wheel drive (ignoring the M SUVs of course). BMW M cars and rear-wheel drive have been synonymous for, like, forever, so having the V8 drive all four wheels is a bold departure. Purists would expect that new M xDrive all-wheel drive would dumb things down. However, even in 4WD mode when the driver gets all excited the stability system (DSC) will allow the rear end to step out a little before bringing everything back in line. Better still, 4WD Sport mode allows even bigger rear-wheel slides, and in the third mode, 2WD, things get a little crazy. Or at least that’s what the PR says. To activate 2WD the driver also has to switch stability control off. BMW NZ expressly

So, we’re not going to tell you that in 2WD with DSC off, the M5 can make like a grin-inducing, tyre smoking drift car, because rules are rules, right?

It’s impossible to single out specific highlights because M5 excels in every way. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable, which is why EastLife was happy to leave it in Comfort mode 90% of the time.

What we can tell you is that with three xDrive modes, three modes for the variable suspension damping and electronic steering, and three modes for the engine characteristics, things can get a tad complicated.

Grip is immense, and with so much torque on tap this thing rockets out of corners like you wouldn’t believe. BMW claims a zero to 100km/h time of a mere 3.3 seconds, however, overseas testers have recorded 2.8 seconds!

Good news is that there’s a simple solution to this mass of modes. Find the combinations which suit driving to work in rush hour, and for scaring your passengers stupid during a Sunday morning blast on the backroads, then save, and turn them on and off, with one push of bright red M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel.

That’s exotic supercar quick, as in insanely quick, and it’s a four-door luxury sedan with an ultra-plush leather interior, and almost every comfort, safety and convenience feature known to mankind.

Airbag recall– a long and winding road In wake of recalls on hundreds of thousands of car airbags, JON RAWLINSON shares his own experience being driven crazy. ‘They should recall Judith Collins,’ a social media wag by the name of ‘Rod Long’ opines, ‘She’s been an airbag for 15 years!’ Fifteen years might not be a long time in politics but more than two years driving a car with a safety feature that could have (ironically) killed us was more than enough for me. Recently, Kris Faafoi (Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs) joined the chorus of dissatisfaction regarding the progress of airbag recalls. “As at the end of May, there were 53,013 vehicles in New Zealand which still had the most dangerous Alpha airbags. That’s 53,013 families and whanau travelling in cars with airbags which are at risk of exploding and sending fragments throughout the vehicle. Since the recall was implemented at the end of May over 22,000 vehicles have been remedied,” he says. A further 306,029 (from 490,004) vehicles with Takata airbags are also yet to be replaced, Mr Faafoi adds. The Minister’s comments prompted me to recall my own recall experience from 2016-17. After

discovering my partner’s car might be affected, I contacted Mazda. The company confirmed we would be advised as soon as possible. During the next nine months, the All Blacks lost, ‘we’ won the America’s Cup, a Prime Minister resigned and (so it turns out) my partner – pregnant for part of this time – was driving a car with a potentially fatal flaw. Then, we finally received our recall letter. I emailed Mazda asking why this took so long to process. The company’s GM of sales and marketing, Glenn Harris – it’s amazing how quick we journalists are kicked upstairs! – responded: “With respect to your case, while

we were recalling similar vehicles to your own in late 2016; this was specific to a range within a prescribed VIN range which did not include your vehicle at that time... We are working to resolve this matter as soon as information is provided to us. However, that doesn’t necessarily come through in a linear manner; such is the nature and scope of this recall and its application.” Although I appreciate these are massive recalls, I am dismayed Mazda took so long merely to confirm whether our car was affected. However slight the risk may have been that our airbag could have blown up in our faces, shouldn’t we have had the right to make an

informed choice as to whether to take up `that risk or, instead, put the car up on blocks? In light of the more recent rounds of recalls, my advice is that everyone should check rightcar.govt.nz/ takataalpha and keep checking as the list is subject to change. If a vehicle is included, best assume it is affected; contact the manufacturer but be prepared to receive the same ‘creative’ definition of ‘asap’ as I did. It must be said that (proportionately) only a small number of deaths have resulted worldwide from these faulty safety features but that’s cold comfort to the families of those most unlucky few.
