Fielding the Blues The announcement that Tana Umaga has signed as the new coach for the beleaguered Blues must have been the nation’s worst kept secret. We all knew he was the man but the wheels of New Zealand rugby bureaucracy turn slowly.
BMW i Showroom – Auckland City BMW, Newmarket Motoring magic – these electric i3 and i8 vehicles are proudly showcased in the dedicated BMW i Showroom at Auckland City BMW – New Zealand’s only BMW i dealership. Since their launch in November 2014, demand for these vehicles and subsequent customer satisfaction has been very strong. Both the five-door i3 and sleek two-seater i8 create a stunning display within the larger, new BMW showroom which has recently seen a multi-million dollar upgrade – see more on Auckland City BMW, pages 14-15.

However, despite the tardy announcement there has been positive reaction to the breath of fresh air this one-time Hurricane promises although I, like many, will be feeling somewhat for nice guy, Sir John Kirwan. But them’s the breaks and I’ll say nothing further except to direct readers to page 58 where they can read more about Tana’s appointment. With the first real bite of winter making itself felt just as we passed the shortest day, I couldn’t help but feel for the people of Whanganui where flooding has left them the most enormous mess and personal devastation. Thank goodness for organisations such as the Red Cross which, despite helping in so many national and international directions, has not only sent in emergency response teams but has launched an emergency appeal to help those hardest hit.

July 2015 ➤ film & Theatre Birthrights July 11 - August 1, times vary, Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga While there are no small actors, just small parts, sometimes great things really do come in ‘Little’ packages. This is doubly so with Howick Little Theatre’s new production. The story follows Helen who, after an operation which prevents her from having a baby, finds her sister, Claudia, is willing to carry the child for her. However, years later when Claudia discovers this could be the only baby she will have, a heart-wrenching conflict will need to be resolved. See hlt.org.nz for bookings or more information. New Zealand International Film Festival July 16 - August 2, times vary, various Auckland City venues The world comes to Auckland during July as the New Zealand International Film Festival focuses on the work of some of the world’s most intriguing filmmakers. From docos to dramas and everything in between, the festival gives Kiwis a chance to (sun) dance on the less often seen side of life. If you don’t have any reason to hit the city this winter already, this might be the excuse you’ve been looking for! See nziff.co.nz for screening times.

is set to be a celebration of Pacific artists and music. NZ Music Award winner, Mark Vanilau, will sing three of his songs, Lavina Williams will perform songs from The Lion King and new music by Auckland composer, Opeloge Ah Sam, is expected to impress. The programme will conclude with a walk through the orchestra; and as visitors walk between the musicians, they will be regaled by tunes from such popular cinematic classics as Star Wars. Details at apo.co.nz. The Two Men in Black July 12, 5pm-8pm, Howick RSA, 25 Wellington Street, Howick Here come the men in black, not those pretenders, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, but original rockers Johnny ‘Boy Named Sue’ Cash and Roy ‘the big O’ Orbison... in spirit at least. Unfortunately, Johnny and Roy won’t be able to make it (due to the unfortunate difficulty of having passed away), but visitors will instead be treated to a tribute show by Brendan Dugan (Cash) and Tony Wellington (Orbison). So, on Sunday (be sure you’re) Coming Down to the RSA; those who miss out may well be left Cry, Cry, Cry... Crying! Details at howickrsa.co.nz. Kavalliers – A Rocking Great Band July 18, 7pm-11pm, Howick RSA, 25 Wellington Street, Howick Let’s face it, the Kavalliers have been a-round. Heading to Howick this month, this veteran band promises to entertain once again, this time with a set loaded with dance music and good, old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. Sure to rise to the occasion, the Kavalliers are ready to sound the charge! See kavalliers.co.nz or howickrsa.co.nz for more information.
Marian Burns – 3 Mad Fiddlers Urban Country July 25, 4-8pm, Clevedon Hotel, 26 Kawakawa Bay Road, Clevedon Kenny may not have been too keen on Ruby taking her love to town, but he’d be downright chuffed if she headed instead to Clevedon! Lovers of country and rock ‘n’ roll are welcome to check into the rural tavern for a marvellous Saturday night of toe-tapping tunes as Urban Country swings to life. ➤ sport Southern Bowl March 5, 2016, Eden Park, Kingsland American football fans will be treated to a backyard blitz early next year when a gridiron gang graces the turf of our garden of Eden, and tickets (through Ticketek) are on sale now! Late last year, the All Blacks clipped the Eagles’ wings at Soldier Field; now it’s time for America to return the favour by bringing their brand of football here. While there’s still plenty of time to gear up for the game,
3 Mad Fiddlers... and the Odd Singer July 7, 11am-1pm, Picton Centre, 120 Picton Street, Howick The devil may have gone down to Georgia but there’s triple trouble threatening to strike when Marian Burns is joined by two other mad fiddlers and two odd singers – organisers say Sue Boland and John Cameron make an odd couple indeed! Billed as ‘a hilarious concert, guaranteed to make (us) laugh till (we) cry’, this show is sure to ‘string’ audiences along. See daytimeconcerts.co.nz for more information.
as this is a first for New Zealand, organisers are expecting it to be a sellout, so we’d best make it... snappy! A second game will follow on March 12 at Wellington’s ‘cake tin’ (Westpac Stadium). Rotary Annual Mid Winter Plunge July 12, from 2.30pm (registrations), Public Boat Ramp, Maraetai Beach, Maraetai One would have to be deeply dippy to plunge into the sea at this time of year, but if this kind of event spins your wheels, then Rotary has the answer! And just to sweeten the deal (we ‘shiver’ to think what extra incentive people would need!) prizes for fancy dress and other giveaways will be up for grabs. However, thankfully, today’s Night Riders at Rainbow’s End will enjoy a much wilder ride as the local theme park lights up when the sun goes down. Q&A
with
Wally Rice
Forget sugar and spice because Rice is what Howick is made of! An iconic local figure, R.H Rice (aka Wally) has long been at the heart of Howick. Following in the footsteps of his father, Henry Russell ‘Russ’ Rice, and grandfather, Jonathan – who established Rices Mall – Wally has been heavily involved in many aspects of community life. This month, we speak with him about how Howick has fared and how it’s likely to do business in future. How important is it to maintain the village ambience in Howick? Coming past Stockade Hill, with its spectacular sea views, and into Picton Street, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of homecoming. There is an intimacy and history which envelops Howick Village Centre. It is common to see people of all ages out walking their dogs or socialising with friends and acknowledging each other. Howick is more than just a collection of shops; it has a heartbeat and encompasses local facilities such as the Uxbridge Art Centre and numerous community groups and arts and crafts. The village atmosphere is still working as Howick retains its unique character as a village by the sea. We should celebrate and cherish our history as a Fencible settlement. Industrious and committed people such as long-serving mayor, Morrin T Cooper, dedicated historian, Alan La Roche, and many other community-minded people have, and are still, contributing to make Howick a thriving, vibrant community. With much commercial development in east Auckland, how well have Howick’s main street retailers coped? Howick Village Centre is well supported by a very loyal and dedicated local community and visitors alike. Large shopping malls tend to be more impersonal, whereas
8 | eastlife | july 2015
our village has a more boutique style. Its retailers pride themselves on personal and helpful service where owners often act in multiple roles, serving clients over the counter while also being involved in the community. Businesses of all kinds have many challenges. However, Howick Village retailers have adapted and are continuing to do so, working hard to improve customer satisfaction. Is one Super City better than the former four, and has Howick benefited from the amalgamation? Although satisfied with Manukau City as it stood, I was even more so with the Howick Borough Council because I believe local works best. Ideally, if you can work in the area where you live and support local businesses, then everyone wins from a time and cost saving point of view. However, the Super City has been foisted upon us and it’s likely here to stay (at least for the time being) so we just need to get on with it! www.eastlife.co.nz
‘ We must realise that council fees will be standardised across Auckland. It is important to strongly represent the best interests of Howick Village to the Howick Board members with the expectation that they will do their job and the unique character of the area will be nurtured and strengthened. It is good that the Uxbridge Creative Centre will be expanding and I look forward to a continuing association with the centre. What developments would you like to see in Howick which would benefit us in the future? I would be happy to see Howick promoted by Auckland City Council as a destination for visitors. The central city has a bus which travels around points of interest including Kelly Tarltons and the museum; why not have a similar smaller bus circuit in Howick Village? We have Howick Historical Village, Stockade Hill, Musick Point, historic All Saints Church, lovely beaches with seaside cafes, and other local historic points of interest (well signposted thanks www.eastlife.co.nz Photo Wayne Martin
to local historian, Alan La Roche) as well as Classy Craft markets and, of course, Howick Village.
Have you ever thought of chucking it all in and going back to being a baker like your grandfather and your dad?
We should celebrate and cherish our history as a Fencible settlement. Industrious and committed people such as long-serving mayor, Morrin T Cooper, dedicated historian, Alan La Roche, and many other community-minded people have, and are still, contributing to make Howick a thriving, vibrant community.”
Are you in favour of a Howick wharf? I am opposed to building a wharf at Howick Beach as it has a pristine reef which needs to be protected. At low tide, it’s lovely to see the yellow glow of Neptune’s beaded necklace seaweed; a good indicator of the health of the reef. It is also a place where local families and visitors come to swim and picnic. Other beaches in the area, such as Mellons Bay and Cockle Bay, deserve protecting as well. The old adage ‘we don’t know what we’ve got until it’s gone’ is very true! It would make better economic sense to further develop the existing facilities at Half Moon Bay. Bus and ferry schedules should be better synchronised so that the need for parking (which is insufficient) is minimised. Mini buses could be utilised during off-peak times, and/or a circuit bus introduced as mentioned as well. With a busy schedule, managing Rices Mall and other local commercial concerns, do you find time for other interests? Life is pretty busy. Generally, I am involved with some of Howick’s community groups. I like to support local theatre, arts and crafts and enjoy the local music scene. I’m a great fan of St Andrews Big Band and attend their performances as often as possible. Gardening, walking (especially visiting historic places) and volunteer involvement in the Howick Historical Village are a few of the many interests I enjoy.
While I spent some of my childhood hanging about the bakery, it was more to catch the crumbs than as a career option – my work background is as a refrigeration and air-conditioning engineer. That said, I enjoy cooking and, if need be, I could probably dust off my dad’s and my grandfather’s recipe books and have a go at bread making. One of my dad’s favourite sayings was, “there’s dough in bread” and I am very thankful for it! Overall, I appreciate working locally, being a hands-on landlord and getting feedback on issues relating to Howick Village from Rices Mall tenants and the public alike. How hard was it to step into your dad’s shoes after he passed away? Dad was a very special person. He had Howick and its community in his heart and addressed borough concerns and community issues with vigour and wisdom. I learnt a lot from him. While initially apprehensive about taking on the role as the family front person for Rices Mall, I adapted quickly. I had a few hiccups along the way, but with years of experience under my belt, I am enjoying the role and my involvement in Howick Village Centre. I am always ‘looking up and never looking down’! If you could be mayor of Auckland for one day, what would you do first and why? The role of mayor in a super city is not one I would relish; it is highly
political. I’m the sort of person who prefers to work in the background, rolling up my sleeves and mucking in. Sometimes much more can be achieved this way. Common problems for cities with large infrastructure are traffic, housing, utilities and the balance of local and universal issues. The Super City represents one third of New Zealand’s population, so central government will want to put their oar in at every opportunity! The Super City needs to focus on core issues and use every cent wisely. Local boards should have a strong voice about local development and can only do so effectively if the community expresses its wishes clearly and positively. If you could invite any three people to dinner (living or dead) who and why? My late father Henry Russell (Russ) Rice – Howick benefactor and master baker; past Mayor of Howick, the late Sir William (Bill) A Stevenson; and, of course, the last incumbent Mayor of Howick, Morrin T Cooper. I have great admiration for these three men. The conversation would be lively indeed, as they were/are strongminded Howickians, passionate about our community. There would be much hard-edged debate and repartee about what best should be done for Howick Village and I would enjoy their wisdom, stories and keen senses of humour... and, hopefully, I’d be allowed to put in my two bobs’ worth as well! eastlife | july 2015 |

Local writer recognised When Queen’s Birthday honours were announced recently, children’s author, Jennifer Beck, received warranted acknowledgement. However, such an accomplishment should not be attributed to her alone as she explains to JON RAWLINSON.
Despite previously being awarded numerous accolades, Jennifer says the ONZM is something special. “I felt very appreciative about the opportunities and support I’ve had. There are a lot of people – particularly those who work in the community – who perhaps don’t get such recognition. So I think I’ve been very lucky overall.” Jennifer has published numerous hard-cover picture books and educational readers including: The Bantam and the Soldier, Gypsy Day on the Farm, John Britten: The boy who did do better, and Stefania’s Dancing Slippers. She has received several awards including Book of the Year at the 1997 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards. However, the modest writer says her ONZM is an honour shared with her illustrators – particularly Bucklands Beach’s Lindy Fisher and Robyn Belton – and publishers, East Tamaki-based Scholastic and Shortland Publications, established by Whitford’s Dame Wendy Pye. “I’ve been really fortunate to have worked with such illustrators as Lindy and Robyn; they’re particularly skilful. I don’t mind their suggestions about text and I hope they don’t mind when I comment on their work,” she laughs. “I do not think the books would have received the awards they have if we had not worked so closely together.” Jennifer adds people from community organisations such as New Zealand Book Council’s Writers in Schools programme – teachers, libraries and bookshops, in particular, Readaway Bookshop in Howick – have also provided instrumental support. “I’ve been involved with Writers in Schools for 25 years and I’ve come across wonderful people. We www.eastlife.co.nz
writers couldn’t function without their support. Readaway has done a huge amount with children’s books, supporting school programmes and book launches; they’re just fantastic! “Particularly in light of the recent wave of self publishing, writers must remember how much we owe to these people because, if we lost their support, it would be a sad day indeed!”
Beck – on soldiers Recently returned from her residency at the University of Otago College of Education, local author Jennifer Beck’s new book (working title Alexander’s Violin), is to be released, fittingly, in time for ANZAC Day next year. Published by Scholastic, and illustrated by Dunedin-based Robyn Belton, it follows the story of Otago soldier, Alexander Aitken, who made music under fire after carrying his violin to Gallipoli and the Somme. “I first considered writing it in 2009 and in 2011 I saw the actual violin, at Otago Boys’ High School. But it wasn’t until this year, when I was awarded the residency at Otago University, that I put pen to paper,” she says. “It was great timing because Dunedin had recently been named UNESCO’s [United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization] City of Literature and, due to the ANZAC centenary commemorations, there were plenty of inspirational plays, musical events and more staged while I was there.” Her latest book is also expected to follow themes familiar to her readers, with an antipodean flavour. Jennifer believes harnessing a love of reading amongst children necessitates relatable subject matter. “I grew up with stories from abroad, but as I was raised on a north Auckland farm, boarding schools, matrons and all that were not part of my world. Some of my favourite

If the pen is mightier than the sword then Howick local, Jennifer Beck, would be a most useful knight of the realm. In the meantime, though, the prolific author is more than content with her most recent honour, the ONZM (Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit) for services to children’s literature.
JENNIFER BECK I grew up with stories from abroad, but as I was raised on a north Auckland farm, boarding schools, matrons and all that were not part of my world. Some of my favourite books are about New Zealand people with New Zealand themes.”
books are about New Zealand people with New Zealand themes,” she says. Jennifer began writing to satisfy her own children’s thirst for ripping good yarns. “When I had young children I was involved with the Cockle Bay Playcentre. I had very creative friends and we talked a lot about children’s books. I then started to write my own. “To put your arm around a child and read them a story is something quite special. It means parents spend time
with children, which is something they’ll always remember.” A fan of other notable children’s writers, such as Joy Cowley, Margaret Mahy and Michael Foreman, Jennifer says she often finds inspiration in books from the Howick Library, with stories of comradeship or courage proving most inspirational. “When something strikes me as funny, courageous or just unusual, I often develop an idea and think ‘I have to write it’! Sometimes, in books, I’ll find a sentence or an idea which will become the trigger for a story, but where it leads is another matter.” While positive messages are important, she says an enjoyable narrative is essential. “It has to be a compelling story which children will enjoy,” she says, “and if we want children to read, it’s always the story that matters most.” eastlife | july 2015 |

One of the most significant changes is the appointment of two BMW Product Geniuses. Their purpose is not to sell, but provide information on the various models, help customers select the vehicle that best suits their needs, and guide them through the selling process in a purely collaborative and relaxed manner.
One era ends – Another Begins
Auckland City BMW, Newmarket – landmark destination for BMW in New Zealand was officially opened last month. It’s not every day that a 30-year-old business simultaneously undergoes radical redevelopment and a name change. But, recently, Auckland City BMW in Newmarket navigated its way through an historic transition from the Team McMillan BMW dealership to become Auckland City BMW – a brand experience centre and landmark destination for BMW sales in New Zealand. So how did it all begin? Team McMillan BMW started in 1985 on the site where Dick Smith currently stands in Remuera Road, Newmarket. After shifting to its current Great South Road site and acquiring an adjacent section for its Premium Selection vehicles, expansion followed over the years with MINI added in 2003 and Rolls-Royce – The Pinnacle of Motoring – in 2012.

The group continued to gather momentum by opening the new MINI Garage in July last year, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. And,
not to be outdone, the BMW brand was augmented with iBrand and its revolutionary electric i3 and i8 vehicles in November. Underpinning this rapid growth was global research showing that customers sought a more engaging process away from traditional vehicle selling methods. There was also the perception that dealerships existed only to sell cars, which could make it difficult for those wanting to engage in the buying process at a selfdetermined pace. Subsequently, a new concept of selling cars was developed: BMW Future Retail, providing a more relaxed and welcoming environment in which customers can buy cars in a non-pressured manner. This innovative new concept was adopted by then Team McMillan BMW. What’s more, to provide the facilities necessary to implement this method of selling, the New BMW showroom temporarily closed in www.eastlife.co.nz

December 2014 for a multi-million dollar refurbishment. After four months the showroom reopened with many major changes in play. Replacing salespeople’s desks (now relocated away from the showroom), are a series of welcoming customer consultation lounges, including large screens for configuring the new car of their choice. The new Guest Services desk is complemented by hostesses who greet visitors with an offer of tea or coffee in the new Isetta Coffee Lounge, featuring a stunning living wall and beautifully displayed lifestyle and accessories products. One of the most significant changes is the appointment of two BMW Product Geniuses. Their purpose is not to sell, but provide information on the various models, help customers select the vehicle that best suits their needs, and guide them through www.eastlife.co.nz
the official opening was a fantastic opportunity for more than 250 BMW enthusiasts to view the impressive new Auckland City BMW and experience a little of what Future Retail means in the dealership environment.
Dealer Principal Ian Gibson, Rt Hon John Key and Director Tim Cook at the opening of Auckland City BMW. the selling process in a purely collaborative and relaxed manner. An extension of this no-pressure environment is the intention for the dealership to become a landmark destination, welcoming anyone who is enthusiastic about BMW. This evolution in selling cars, together with the extensive refurbishment and new dealership name, necessitated a commemorative event fitting for such pivotal milestones. The official, star-studded opening ceremony held recently included VIP
guests such as the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon John Key, who unveiled a plaque now proudly installed near the Guest Services area. Hollywood A-Lister Karl Urban added movie star appeal, and shared photograph requests with the Prime Minister – both were in high demand. Representatives from BMW New Zealand also attended, and departing Managing Director, Nina Englert was presented with artwork by Dick Frizzell. Dealer Principal, Ian Gibson says
“And, for us, a person shouldn’t only experience driving pleasure from behind the wheel of a BMW. The ultimate driving experience should begin the moment clients step into our dealership,” he says. “As the longest established BMW dealership in New Zealand, we thought it appropriate for a remodel and relaunch, particularly as we are celebrating the dealership’s 30th anniversary this year.” Certainly with an impressive new facility delivering the Future Retail programme, Auckland City BMW’s presence on the motoring landscape seems well assured for at least another 30 years. eastlife | july 2015 |

Irons in the fire painting in blues frame
Bluesman Tony Painting of Howick has paid his dues and gets it off his chest, in a forthright conversation with PJ TAYLOR, himself a blues disciple and long-time drummer and Howick Village Radio DJ.
Jimi Hendrix left such an impression on Tony Painting that the Howick blues-rocker has paid another tribute – a permanent one – to the late, great, American guitarist and singer.
natural for me to do,” says Painting. “It wasn’t hard to learn the numbers, or even sing them. His vocals suited mine. I still get a great buzz from playing those songs and always will.”
Forty-four years after Hendrix’s tragic, avoidable death in Notting Hill, London, aged 27, Painting inked his biceps last year with a stunning tattoo, the musical notation of Hendrix’s song, Voodoo Chile.
Tony, his wife Marie and family arrived in New Zealand on September 13, 1998, settling in Howick. “I’ll never forget that date. We thought it was a better life for the family, we had three young boys. The Kiwi way of life was the attraction.”
“It was done by Kevin’s Tattoos in Botany, before we went back to the UK for a holiday, the first time we’d been back for 16 years. I’d wanted to do it for years. It’s an affirmation of my influences and, of course, my main one, a nod to the music I’m into,” says Tony, in his optimistic Brummie accent. “September 18, 1970, was when Hendrix died. A week later, he was number one on Top of The Pops [long-running British TV music show]. They played a montage of film behind Voodoo Chile. It was psychedelic. I sat in front of the TV fixated. That was the defining moment. That was the music I was going to do. It’s stuck with me all this time. “What I didn’t know, on the other side of the Atlantic, a guy born three months later than me, was doing the same thing. His name was Stevie Ray Vaughan. As soon as I heard him and started playing his numbers, it was like I had always played them. I had a strange affinity with the guy – tunings, tone, style.” The link between Hendrix and Vaughan is Voodoo Chile – Stevie Ray’s 1980s version and a tribute to Jimi is epic. As is Gary Moore’s homage to him in the Blues classic Red House. Tony’s so passionate about the music of Vaughan and his Austin, Texas band, Double Trouble, and for keeping it alive, that for five years he and his group, The Power have played an annual tribute show. They presented three at the King’s Arms, and last year at Juice Bar, Windsor Castle, Parnell, the venue for this August 1’s SRV remembrance, the 25th anniversary of his death in a helicopter crash in 1990. “It was so
After playing gigs across Britain and in his native Birmingham for three decades, Tony found himself in a new musical environment without as many live playing opportunities. Following a lengthy stint in a covers band, he broke free and formed Tony Painting and The Power five years ago. He had played in a group in England called the Band of Gypsies – not to be confused with Hendrix’s second band of the same name decades before, and blues-rock material formed the set. To attempt to play music by his guitar heroes Hendrix, Vaughan, Moore, Robin Trower and Rory Gallagher, is an excellent representation of Painting’s ability on the axe. With no opportunity to record his own compositions down the years, he is ecstatic to have finally completed a six-song EP, Off The Chest. Recorded at Jesse Wilde’s Wilderecords Recording Studios in Bucklands Beach, Tony says: “Oh mate, it’s just a relief to get it done. Some of the numbers I wrote 30 years ago. One was from last year. It was something I needed to get out of the way so I could move onto my new CD.” Like the newest recording, the next album project will feature handpicked musicians Tony’s played with down the years, with all new Painting compositions. The 12-14 tracks will again be laid down at Wilderecords. Tony’s also collaborating with another ex-pat Brit in Bucklands Beach, guitarist and singersongwriter Bill Perry, well-known in the area through his constant gigging.
“We’ve recorded a few of Bill’s numbers. We’ve talked about doing some roots-blues, but it’s grown since – more produced numbers. We’re interested in producing a CD. He’s got some great songs.”

“A friend of my brother’s was in a folk group and showed me how to re-string and tune it, teaching me three chords, C, G and D. That was my intro into guitar. There was no YouTube. You learnt off your mates, going to see bands, and buying the singles and albums on vinyl.”
Painting has the highest standards when recording. “It’s a double-edged sword. You want it done, you want the product finished so you can get it out,” he says. “But you’re also concentrating on making sure the songs are technically correct and played to the best of your ability.”
influences Tony grew up in the conservative Britain of the 1950s, rebuilding after the Second World War, when the united cry was, ‘we’re all in this together’. Yet by the time he was a teenager, the hair was long and flowing in the armpits, and psychedelic tie-dye, the fashion. His father brought home an “old beat up guitar” one Saturday afternoon, following the men’s pub session ritual of the era. Tony was 12. “It was like the holy grail, my guitar with two strings. I played it for hours. “A friend of my brother’s was in a folk group and showed me how to re-string and tune it, teaching me three chords, C, G and D. That was my intro into guitar. There was no YouTube. You learnt off your mates, going to see bands, and buying the singles and albums on vinyl.” Painting’s early musical exposure was to the classic crooners – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Co, the American rock n’ roll of the 1950s and the British skiffle movement led by Lonnie Donegan, which flowed into beat bands The Beatles and Rolling Stones and their contemporaries. “Those guys brought the influences of the American blues guys and the old R n’ B, until my teenage years, then it was Hendrix – my main man – Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Trower and Gallagher. “And through that, I went back and explored their influences, Howling Wolf, Big Bill Broonzy, Albert King, BB King, Albert Collins and Freddie King.”

strange encounters Tony’s first band was called National Hero. He was invited to join when he was 17; it was 1971. Before contemplating a move to Aotearoa, one of the biggest gigs of his career was supporting fellow Brummie, Ozzie Osbourne on the Black Sabbath vocalist’s first solo tour, the Blizzard of Ozz, with American guitarist, the late Randy Rhoads. “Ozzie would pick up Randy over his shoulder. We’d been on stage, played to 2000 people – brilliant. We were watching back stage and Randy went into his solo. Ozzie comes back to two pints of beer on a stool next to us – straight down they go – no pause for air, and rushes back to carry on singing. That knocked me out,” Tony says with a smile of appreciation. “The first time I met Ozzie was in 1971 where he practised with Black Sabbath. We were auditioning a girl singer and saw this guy peering in. He came in with his roadie, big bottle of cider, ‘hiya guys, how’s it going?’ I didn’t know who he was, I thought it was a yobbo off the street. He talked with us for about 20 minutes and left the cider.” Rolling forward a decade or two, Painting also shared the same bills with acts such as Jools Holland and British soul diva, Ruby Turner. And with his Band of Gypsies, Tony says they jammed with Robert Plant, legendary Led Zeppelin singer. “I nearly had a fight with John Bonham [the late drummer of Led Zep]. I didn’t realise it was him. There was a pub, The Railway, in Birmingham. Every Friday night the house band was on and people would get up and jam. Plant used to turn up. It was always packed. “There’s this guy in front of me, drunk, in a bright sports jacket. He couldn’t stay still and kept bumping into me. Then, the singer announces they’ve got someone in the audience coming up to play the drums – John Bonham. “I thought, great, he’s one of my heroes. And this guy in the sports jacket staggers on to the stage and proceeded to totally blitz the drum kit. Brilliant!” www.eastlife.co.nz

Prize trip motors through three countries
When Mellons Bay couple Mark and Julie Cressey won a 58-day motor home adventure in three countries, the avid caravanners, nature lovers and ardent explorers were thrilled. Julie Cressey talked to HELEN PERRY about camper-vanning and encouraged other ‘adventurers’ to do likewise. Mark Cressey has been a sailor most of his life; a former professional yachtsman. His wife, Julie is a confirmed landlubber despite coming from a sailing family. A 30ft caravan – or rather ‘toy hauler’ with a boat in the back and bikes on top – may seem like a compromise but far from it. The couple have the best of many worlds – land and ocean, mountain trails, fishing grounds, walking tracks and more. They’ve seen more of New Zealand than most people and after winning the Tourism Holdings Ltd gate prize at the Covi Motor Home, Caravan and Outdoor SuperShow two years ago they have now seen a good deal of the USA and Australia as well as more of their own country. Not that the couple hadn’t travelled in the past. “I was raised in Hong Kong, my parents living there for 26 years. I met Mark in Thailand at a yachting regatta where he and my father were on the same race yacht. I’ve also lived and worked in the United Kingdom and with Mark in the USA before we settled in Howick,” Julie explains.
18 | eastlife | july 2015
While her husband will forever be a yachtie, she says her propensity for seasickness saw the couple take up caravanning. “We’re on to our second caravan, a ‘toy hauler’ in which the back opens up to accommodate our Thunder Cat. That way we always have the boat with us as well as our mountain bikes giving us plenty of scope to enjoy land and water.” So, already familiar with living on the road, Julie says the idea of 58 days in three countries via motor home really appealed. “It meant we could also take our daughter, Stella who was 11 then and old enough to appreciate the trip. Fortunately, we were allowed to split our touring time so we did the USA and Australia first then New Zealand some months later.”
Julie and Stella Cressey ‘roughing’ it during the American section of their prize. went, the scenery was outstanding and the motor home parks in the USA and Australia were unbelievably well set up and organised. In Australia most of the grounds even had swimming pools. You didn’t want for anything.
“After a week at our own expense in Los Angeles taking in Disneyland and the sights, we picked up our RV motor home then headed for San Diego, Las Vegas and on to several national parks – Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite.
“However, touring was not without a few surprises – 18-lane US highways for one!
“The scenery was breath-taking and the motor home/camping parks provided every possible facility. They were also exceptionally well maintained. Camp shops lacked for nothing and park rangers were helpful, friendly and full of information.
The Cressey’s prize was four weeks in the USA, three weeks in Australia and 10 days in New Zealand.”
“These were a bit scary at first but we took advice and headed for the centre lane. There, we didn’t feel quite so dwarfed by the massive trucks you see in the States although making our way back to an exit was done with great caution and a few intakes of breath.”
“Every leg was amazing. We met wonderful people everywhere we
Driving adjustment aside, Julie says the trip was “utterly memorable.”

Left, sleeping under the stars on the pontoon at Great Barrier reef; right, Mark Cressey, and daughter Stella, ready to explore Cape Tribulation. Travelling States-side threw up a few other surprises too. “It was sometimes difficult to calculate distances especially between cities and we often drove miles and miles without passing a town. The roads were long and straight and in some areas there wasn’t a lot to see. “If undertaking such a trip we suggest doing a lot of research first and plan routes carefully. This is a big country of great contrasts.” After more than two weeks wandering on the eastern side of the States, the Cresseys dropped off their ‘home away from home’ then flew to New York to pick up another before exploring Washington DC and travelling up to Maine.
The US tour behind them, the Cresseys returned to New Zealand and prepared for the Australian leg of their journey. Once again they headed for wilderness parts keen to take in the scenery of northern Queensland. Flying to Cairns to pick up their Maui motor home, the family headed north to the World Heritage listed, Daintree Forest and Cape Tribulation. “Here we saw crocodiles, but strangely we never spotted a snake and no big bugs either. But the flora and terrain was different from anywhere else; we’d really like to go back and head even further north,” Julie says. But with time ticking by, it was south to Port Douglas, The Great Barrier Reef, Ayrlies Beach, Bundaberg and finally, Brisbane.
‘
The scenery was breath-taking and the motor home/camping parks provided every possible facility. They were also exceptionally well maintained. Camp shops lacked for nothing and park rangers were helpful, friendly and full of information.”
“Great Barrier Reef was a real treat; we even did the Reef Sleep, staying out on the pontoon overnight, sleeping under the stars. Mark made a night dive too and we all swam with the turtles – that was magical.” But before they knew it, the Cresseys’ Aussie touring was done and it was back to New Zealand and daily routines before they were able to pick up the final 10 days of their prize some months later.
Back in familiar territory, the family concentrated on the lower South Island taking in popular tourist spots such as Lake Tekapo, Milford Sound, Curio Bay, known for its 180 million year old petrified forest, the Moeraki Boulders and the now famous Fleur’s Place where “we ate several nights in a row – seafood like we’d never had before!” By the time their dream journey was at an end, the Cresseys might have expected to give compact living a miss for a while but quite the opposite. “Used to our caravan, the three of us had no problems sharing a motor home,” Julie says. “In particular, the warmth of welcome from other travellers was wonderful. “Wherever we went we met people from all parts of the world but if there was one thing we did learn, and what my daughter came to appreciate, is that there really is no place like home. New Zealand is a marvellous place to live.”

“I’d recommend Maine to anyone looking for beautiful countryside which is not so disimilar from New Zealand,” Julie says. “This is one state that really delivers. We had lived there previously and revisited
many favourite haunts including gorgeous Newport, on Rhode Island, a must see in my opinion.”

The sprint to city deposits commuters close to many top hotels and if seeking comfy accommodation, a reasonable price – say around $150-$200 per night, plus top service and a central location, then The Menzies does the trick.

Lauded for its majestic mountains and commanding scenery, Queenstown is known to be as chilling as it is thrilling... in more ways than one.
An oldie but a goody, it is just a couple of strides from Wynyard Station where on my recent visit, I occupied a superior room on the sixth
floor, its generous size making it ideal for anyone carrying loads of luggage (and shopping) or for a family. Traditional decor exuded old world charm with my room sporting two queen beds. The bathroom was a tad on the small side and a little tired, but I couldn’t fault the shower – ample hot water at great pressure. I really like this hotel. A pianist plays during happy hour, the breakfast room is well managed and the food ample and varied. The main restaurant off the foyer is always abuzz while whose on a budget should venture downstairs to the sportsman’s bar where there are nightly specials of around $15. There are grander hotels as well as budget options but for those seeking middle of the road with a touch of class, then The Menzies fits the bill. – Helen Perry www.eastlife.co.nz
Encounters OF THE squid kind A tropical holiday to escape the winter mush turned into a mixed bag of squid, culture and adventure for NATALIE BRITTAN, who caught much more than she bargained for when she attended the International Squid Jigging Festival in Malaysia. Despite hailing from the City of Sails, I could hardly call myself a salty dog, much less a salty pup. So when I was invited to tour the sights and sounds of east coast peninsular Malaysia as part of the International Squid Jigging Festival, I really didn’t know what to expect. Nevertheless, I jumped on board excited about the prospect of embarking on my virgin fishing expedition. The destination was Terengganu, a coastal state known for its azure waters, alabaster beaches and turtle sightings. Being Malaysian born, I was wellacquainted with Pulau Redang, a popular island destination where I first snorkelled as a child. While snorkelling was on the agenda, I soon learnt there was much more to Terengganu than meets the eye, including locals’ surprising obsession with squid.
Clockwise from top left, Crystal Mosque, Natalie with her catch, street art in Chinatown, elephants filing in, sea bounty.
Not limited to fried calamari, squid was cooked a variety of ways – one unique local delicacy featured it stuffed with glutinous rice and slow cooked in thick coconut milk broth.
What is squid jigging? A prawnshaped lure (jig) is lowered to the sea floor, reeled in about 2m, and then the jigging (jerking of the wrist) begins!
Having had my first taste of such a tantalising dish I was hungry for more and the much-anticipated squid jigging soon arrived.
We set out on small fishing vessels at dusk, all initially buoyant in spirit. But the waters were rough, and the boat rocked no end, soon crumbling the spirits of those without sea legs.
www.eastlife.co.nz
I was lucky to have a pretty sturdy pair, along with a German and Australian onboard, and that made all the difference. A gorgeous sunset, good company and freshly chargrilled squid on the beach that night – you couldn’t ask for a better catch. The following days were filled with clam digging in an open estuary, admiring stunning street art in the alleyways of Chinatown, browsing
one of the biggest wet markets I’d ever seen, silently observing Muslims in prayer at a glittering Crystal Mosque overlooking the water, and watching elephants during their bathtime. Rich in cultural heritage, culinary wonders and natural beauty, Terengganu was much more than just another island destination. “Gone fishing”, I had naively told those who asked. Little did I know it would be much more than just fish!

Isabella Wins New Zealand’s First Scholarship to ‘SCAD’ King’s College student Isabella Jorgensen has become the first New Zealander to win a scholarship to the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Isabella was awarded the prize for Academic Scholarship and Creative Achievement and in the upcoming school holidays she will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to study.
WELCOMING BOARDING AND DAY STUDENTS
Isabella said her course is essentially a whole semester’s work squeezed into six weeks, but the intensity will be rewarding. Entry to SCAD is extremely competitive (less than 50% of those who apply are accepted), but succeeding in this particular course would give her a head start in their full-time undergraduate programme when she finishes at King’s College later this year.

Isabella credits her teachers with helping her to identify
and apply for the scholarship to SCAD. King’s College invited SCAD to present to classes and talk about their ‘Rising Star’ programme. Keenly aware of both her ability and interest, Head of Visual Art and Design, Mr Chas Foxall, assisted Isabella in getting together all that was required for the application. Isabella sent a portfolio of work to Atlanta along with a substantial amount of supporting material. This enabled Isabella to demonstrate her commitment to her subject and her outstanding record. Isabella’s accomplishments include winning the school prizes for both graphics and design, as well as achieving straight excellences in Level 2 Design in 2014. Mr Foxall said that he is thrilled for Isabella and that winning this scholarship will enable her to truly develop her skills. She has proven that she is not only talented, but prepared to work hard. www.eastlife.co.nz
Vis for Victory Local resident and history buff CHRISTINE MILES gives the low down on the history behind some of our thoroughfares and well known places. Howick’s well-known Vincent Street, which runs from the original Howick village area between Wellington and Moore Streets, up to Ridge Road (or Main Road as it was sometimes referred to) is named for the First Earl of St Vincent, John Jervis (1735-1823).
Though they had nearly twice as many ships as the British, the poor old Spaniards, undisciplined as they were, didn’t stand a chance. Caught off guard, it was later found that many of their guns had not even been fired.
Jervis was recognised for his leadership in the navy and admired for his generosity towards friends who needed help. But he is, perhaps, best known for his victory at the Battle of Cape St Vincent.
Crimmin, in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, describes Jervis’ contribution to history as being “the organiser of victories”.
Located in Portugal, Cape St Vincent was the scene of a mighty battle on February 14, 1797, between the Spanish fleet and the British. As in the great tales of yesteryear, Jervis had the smaller fleet but overcame the larger fleet with minimal loss of life…on his side anyway. His success was attributed to the high standard of discipline expected of his subordinates.
Two of Howick’s long-standing businesses sit at the base of Vincent Street. John Savory Pharmacy has provided community care for more than 50 years and Howick Meats has provided fresh meat for more than 20 years. If the owners of the pharmacy and butchery were to sit at the table with the 1st Earl of St Vincent, it is almost certain that some discussion of those famous victories would take place.
At the top of Vincent Street sits St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The old chapel, popular today for weddings and other celebratory services, was built in 1872/3. Prior to that, the congregation had been meeting in a fencible cottage and then a farm homestead in Bleakhouse Road.
It would have been seen as a grand victory when the Howick Kirk, or Scotch Church, as St Andrew’s was first known, was raised and another victory when a bigger, modern church was built next to it in the 1980s. V is for Vincent; V is for Victory – yes, it seems like Vincent Street is a good place to be.

Hitting life’s high notes ‘ It’s not always possible to sing or play an instrument for a living, but one rare Howick couple has done so, striking a fine balance with travel, work and family for many years. NATALIE BRITTAN has a chat with the musical duo over a cup of tea.
Their lives are so saturated with music that creativity seems to seep out of every pore of Katharine and Peter Watts’ colourful Howick home. They have lived there for nearly 40 years and, in that time, they have done so much that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what they are best known for. While schoolchildren remember their vibrant antics as musical group, Bandwagon, those of all ages will remember them as music teachers, and most will know them for a multitude of musical stints across Howick and beyond, namely Thursdays @ Seven, which finished last month and will run again in spring from October 29-December 10 at the All Saints Church in Picton Street. But beyond the life of music the Watts will, later this year, embark on their other love: travel. Their itinerary takes them to Eastern European cities such as Austria, Prague and Slovenia. They will spend a month in London, where their musician son currently lives and where many friends and family of British-born Peter are based. Music is never far away, of course. Austria is home to the Schubert Festival featuring world class music composed by romantic greats such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. It comes as no surprise that the couple, who have reached their ruby anniversary (40th), found romance through music. Fresh out of university in England, Peter was travelling the world when a hitch in travel plans meant a longer than expected stop in New Zealand turned permanent thanks to friends of Katharine’s in Howick. “The wife rubbed her hands together and told me they had a lovely young musician coming to stay with them!” Katharine laughs.

The pair bonded instantly and Peter joined the choir Katharine was then a part of – the world-famous Dorian choir that had won the BBC’s Let the Peoples Sing international competition. They eventually married in the chapel at Dilworth School where Peter was then teaching.
was go to Britain with the choir,” says Katharine. The Watts also busied themselves with family and building a home. Katharine’s mother had passed away and her elderly father, prominent politician Ronald Algie, needed care. “In the end we moved in with my father for four years then came out here and built in Howick.” With Katharine’s father a former Speaker of the House, Minister of Education and Remuera MP, she says his career made for a very interesting childhood. “I was used to being in public because my parents always were and it helped sow the seeds for my love of travel. There is even a street named after my father – Ronald Algie Place in St Johns. I remember my mother got the giggles and said, ‘well, they couldn’t find anything bigger than a tiny little street’!” It was from her singer-pianist-painter mother that Katharine gained her love of music. “I always sang and I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t singing!” Like her mother, Katharine is gifted in many areas, adding feathers such

as ‘seamstress’, ‘linguist’ (German, Italian, French, Spanish), ‘chef’ and ‘gardener’ to her musical hat. “Peter used to say, ‘to have a happy Katharine, she needs to be singing, gardening and cooking’.” Meanwhile, Peter had a traditional introduction to music. “As a child I was sent to piano lessons with my brothers. I took off and they didn’t!” With the Watts household such an artistic one, the couple’s two sons – one, a musician/sound technician in London, and the other, a local filmmaker/film editor – had no chance of escape. However, Katharine says her boys wouldn’t have had it any other way. “One of our sons said, ‘yeah, as if with you doing the things you did I’d have been satisfied being a merchant banker or doing an office job!’ “You work immensely hard and
you earn less but you are doing absolutely what you love and it’s stimulating and enjoyable.” Creativity remains relevant to those embarking on other careers too, says Katharine. “Disciplines that encourage people to think – and music is just one of these – will be essential. It offers release from stress and a chance for self-discovery.” It has been a particularly rewarding path for Katharine and Peter who made the decision in 1986 to switch from full-time teaching to being selfemployed (until recently). However, Peter is now a full-time music lecturer at the University of Auckland. Katharine still teaches voice to budding young singers and adults pursuing singing either in a professional or hobby capacity. In fact, many of her students have gone on to greater things including 14-year-old Matthew Turner who was chosen to perform in the New Zealand production of The Sound of Music in Wellington last year. Having done much, the globe-trotting Watts are hungry to experience more music festivals around the world. “We always have, at the back of our minds, projects to spread the love of music. Making music is something that you actually don’t do on your own,” says Peter. “It’s a communal activity and that’s one of the great things about it – you work together.”
Impressive music background Soprano Katharine Watts trained in Auckland and in London with wellknown vocal coach, David Harper and Trinity College professor, Morag Noble. She has sung with notable choirs including the awardwinning Dorian Choir and Orlando Singers for many years.
young and old students. She has taught music at Edgewater College and is a former president and current member of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing (NEWZATS), travelling regularly to the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT).
In smaller ensembles she is known as one half of soprano duo, Two’s Company and is one of the Calico Jam vocal sextet which has recorded for Radio New Zealand and performed across New Zealand including Highwic and the Auckland Town Hall.
Pianist and conductor Peter Watts studied teaching at the University of Cambridge, England. He became deputy conductor at the Dorian Choir and subsequently took on the role of director of the Auckland Choral Society.
Her career in teaching has been vast and she is one of Howick’s best-known vocal tutors teaching
He began teaching at Dilworth School, Epsom before moving to Howick College in the ‘70s. He is
currently a music lecturer at the University of Auckland and travels regularly to Asia as music examiner for Trinity College, London. Performance-wise, he directs Calico Jam and is a guest conductor at many musical events. Together, Katharine and Peter have performed at prestigious venues in England including the Keble College Chapel in Oxford and Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. Their children’s musical group, Bandwagon has reached tens of thousands of schoolchildren and the couple also founded and organise Thursdays @ Seven at All Saints Church in Howick.

TIRED OF TANTRUMS? Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today centre owner Caryn Mawkes has some practical and helpful tips to help deal with trantrums. Every parent has had a moment when their child suddenly screams, kicks or drops to the floor.  Usually this is when a child is angry or disappointed and maybe too young to verbally express itself.  When your child is in the middle of a tantrum, it can be tough to keep yourself from having a meltdown, too. Below are some strategies and tips that may help deal with these tricky situations. First remember, as your children grow older, you can teach them better ways to express their feelings. But when they are toddlers and preschool age, we as adults need to use clear strategies and guidelines. No matter how embarrassed you may be, never give in to a tantrum. If you do your child learns that the tantrum works! If you say, “I’ll give you a treat if you’re quiet, or “All right, I’ll get you one this time! your child learns how to push your buttons.  Be firm and don’t give in, even if you have to leave the scene with your child.
PREVENTING A TANTRUM • A tired child is more likely to ‘lose it.’ • Let your child know about changes or special events before they happen. If children know what to expect, they feel less stressed. • Tell him/her what you expect when going to a shop or restaurant. • Warn them and allow time before they change activities/transitions i.e. going to bed, coming inside. • Be sensitive to your child’s feelings. At special events (a new baby, another person’s birthday) spend extra time with him/her.
Healthy and Quick Bakeat-Home Dog Treats! TANYA CRAMOY, B.S. Animal Science, has introduced East Auckland to its first pet boutique, Ella Bella’s, specialising in animal nutrition and high-quality, unique products with an eco-friendly bent. Do you often find yourself at home on a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do and nowhere to be? No? Hmm‌me neither.
HANDLING A TANTRUM
Unfortunately, our lives are not riddled with spare time to bake, relax, or read a book on the beach in Maui. But I digress. In light of life’s realities, here are two easy recipes to treat your dogs with something healthy, quickly.
• STAY CALM!
Frozen Pumpkin Cubes
• Try not to show any expression. Try not to respond.
For this one we just need pumpkin puree, coconut yoghurt, a freezer, and an ice cube tray. This is a great recipe to do with young kids because it involves no ovens and is ultra quick. Pumpkin is a vitamin-rich superfood packed with beneficial fibre to aid digestion.
• Don’t expect too much from your child. For example, sharing is very hard for young children.
• If you are at home, leave the room for a few moments (if your child is not hurting themselves or others). Stay where you can hear the child. • Use ‘time-out’ if you need to. Use one minute per year of your child’s age. (2 minutes for a 2-year-old). Let them come out when they are calm. • If your child has a tantrum in public, pick him/her up and carry to a private place or to the car. Make it clear you will not go back until he/she is calm. • Use words to express your child’s feelings. Suggest a way your child can calm down. For example, ‘I know you’re really angry that it’s time to go home’. ‘Maybe you’d like to hold your favourite bear for a while until you feel calm.’ Tantrums are usually a phase children go through. It will come to an end. Then another phase of one kind or another will start. Remember to keep calm and stay in control – good luck and I hope these tips are helpful.
• 2 cups of pumpkin puree (peel, boil and mash, OR use the canned kind!) • 1/2 cup coconut yoghurt • optional – 2 tbps LSA, 2 tbps all-natural peanut butter, for their vitamins! Mix together and freeze in ice cube trays.
Wheat-free Blueberry & Oat (or make Grainfree!) Biscuits Blueberries and oats both exhibit anti-cancer properties and the fibre, manganese, and vitamin K in blueberries also help to improve heart function and lower stroke risk. Blueberries have also been shown to improve cognitive function in older dogs. In other
words, they will help you teach an old dog new tricks! • 1 banana • 1/2 cup blueberries • 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter • 1 1/2 cup whole rolled oats (use a mix of coconut and quinoa flour for a grain-free option!) • 1/2 cup coconut milk (or water) • 1/2 cup freshly chopped parsley Preheat oven to 180°C. Blend blueberries and banana together (or mash with a fork to avoid having to wash the blender! We’re aiming for quick and easy which in my book includes less clean-up). Measure 1/2 cup coconut milk in a glass measuring cup, then add peanut butter until liquid level reaches 1 cup. Microwave until peanut butter is soft and easily mixed with the milk. Add peanut butter mixture and rolled oats to blueberry and banana mash. Add parsley and mix! Once fully combined, use a teaspoon/tablespoon and drop spoonfuls onto a sheet of parchment paper on a cookie tray (again, minimise the cleanup!). Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. (Makes around 30 biscuits so store in the freezer for long lasting goodness). Now, go enjoy your extra time and book that trip to Maui!

All or nothing Talk to the team at your local Jetts club for more health tips and exercise information. This article is provided by Olly Coffey, Development and Support for mibodycoach.com, and consultant to Jetts 24-Hour Fitness. A job half done is not done. This is a true statement in many situations, but with exercise, anything is better than nothing. Completing part of a planned workout is preferable than completing nothing at all. While you will have to compromise the quantity of exercise you complete, you can still focus on quality. And by making the effort to do some activity, you are, at the very least, sticking to your plan in terms of maintaining a regular habit. In fact, three 20-minute workouts over a week are more effective than one 60-minute workout in most cases. The danger in having an, ‘all or nothing’ mentality, if that even a slight disruption can cascade into skipping an entire day (even a week) out of your plan. As an exercise professional, I
commonly hear comments such as, ‘I broke my plan so I’ve decided to start again properly next week’, or, ‘I went to a party and ate some cake, so I will start my eating plan next week’. If your meeting runs over, and you are left with 20 minutes to exercise rather than 60, this just means that you have a lot to fit into 20 minutes – not that you need to skip the workout entirely. It certainly doesn’t mean that you weekly exercise plan is broken so you should start again next week! Here are some simple tips to get the most out of a short workout. • Choose selected exercises in your planned workout: Simply choose a selected number of exercises in your plan and complete them as you normally would. This way you maintain exercise intensity; the compromise is reduced training volume.
EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP
• Complete all exercises in your plan but reduce the time or number of sets you complete: This means you still benefit from completing every exercise; you just do a less of each. The compromise here is that exercise intensity is reduced. • Swap your planned workout for Plan B: It is a good idea to have a short sharp 20-minute workout plan for those days that get away from you. This means, you can simply get stuck into your ‘Plan B’ workout, which is tailored to your needs. • Be efficient: Within most programmes, there is a lot of time that can be ‘trimmed’ by simply moving swiftly between exercises, using a water bottle rather than walking to the drink fountain; and focusing on exercise rather than chat! • Increase Intensity: When you reduce the duration of an exercise programme, you can still achieve fantastic results by increasing your training intensity. The best way to do this in a short time frame is to reduce your rest periods. You can also
increase speed and or resistance. It is important, however, to remember that technique should not be compromised in your efforts to get things done quickly. A final note, it is a good idea to speak to an exercise professional about how to adapt your programme when short on time. Increasing intensity is not always appropriate, particularly if you have some health concerns. In all cases, however, doing something is better than nothing.

Do You Have a
dragon child? CLIVE PLUCKNETT, Naturopath, P.G.Dip. Anti Aging Medicine, P.G.Dip. Cancer Nutrition, P.G.Dip. Mental Health Nutrition, MBA, BA, P.G.Dip Science We all love our children. How could we not? Yet do you have a child who really tests you, someone whose temper tantrums go from 0 to 100 in a flash. I did and that started my search for a biochemical solution to a behavioural problem. That’s when I discovered kryptopylorria (pyroluria).
Early birds one step ahead
Pyroluria is not as rare as you may think. It has been estimated that 24% of children with behavioural issues or a learning disorder have pyroluria. So what is pyroluria? No, it has nothing to do with No 2s. The simple explanation is that it is a condition where, in periods of stress, the body produces something called pyrroles, which rip zinc and vitamin B 6 out of the body. The deficiency of these two key nutrients results in many symptoms, one of which is the temper tantrum. Pyrroles usually manifest in the early teens, though they can impact at a much younger age. Here are some of the many signs and symptoms: • White spots on nails • Poor wound healing • Poor dream recall • Crowded teeth • Joint pain • Low stress tolerance, easily irritated, explosive • Depressed, lethargic • Tendency to anaemia • China doll face • Allergies • Reduced learning ability • Delayed puberty It is rare to have all the symptoms, but if you or your child (yes, it is inherited) has ticked more than a third of the above symptoms, then check out the questionnaire on our website for a closer look. All the listed
symptoms are a result of zinc and B6 deficiencies. They can however manifest differently in different people. Pyroluria can often be identified in the clinic, but in some cases, I recommend a specific lab test available to test for it. There is a temptation to make a diagnosis based on a questionnaire or Dr Google and then just throw zinc and B6 at yourself or your child. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Zinc in excessive amounts is a neurotoxin and B6 often cannot be absorbed by some people. It is a bit like trying to fix that tiny leak in your bathroom without calling the plumber and ending up with a flood. Pyroluria features strongly in people suffering from mental health issues (50% to 65%). But that is another story. Pyroluria is not a one-stop solution for all behavioural problems and learning difficulties, but where it is an issue, it can make a startling difference. Visit our website for more information and case studies.

GINNY MCARTHUR – Outlook for Life. Ginny is not only a nutritionalist and personal trainer but also a marathon runner and regular on Newstalk ZB.
Thank goodness the shortest day has passed. Every day now is a day closer to summer and that’s a welcome thought because winter certainly doesn’t make it easy to exercise. The cold and dark can dampen motivation to get out of bed and exercise first thing in the morning. Despite this, once up and moving about you don’t stay cold for long. If I’m walking or running I head out in my hi-visibility vest and layer up. But, after about 10 minutes I usually find that I’m wearing too many layers! If I’m training in the gym I also layer up and the same thing happens – a few sets of weights and the layers come off. But there are advantages to very early starts. Did you know that we early birds who run in the dark have far fewer wrinkles and skin cancers to worry about? At this time of year, I only seem to run in the daylight when attending events. Of course, starting at the crack of dawn, wearing a high visibility vest and a headlight, means we early risers have our morning run finished before many are even starting their day. And, getting outside in the cold and wet is not bad for you. Let’s face it, Auckland doesn’t even get really cold. When living in the UK, I worked
outside with horses – now, THAT was cold! One year temperatures dropped to -26°C and the diesel froze in the tank of the horse truck. Interestingly, you are more likely to catch a cold in the office than out in the fresh air. Plus we outdoor types burn extra calories staying warm and that has to be a bonus. However, be sure to refuel well after your exercise at this time of year; you don’t want to fall into the trap of over-eating later in the day. It’s very easy to eat more calories than those used on your run – and we feel hungrier when we are cold. Use porridge, casseroles, stews and stir-fries, baked kumara, lentils and brown rice with loads of winter veggies to boost your immune function and stay warm and well. If you struggle to drink your water cold at this time of year, try herb or fruit teas – my favourite is lemon and ginger – these don’t contain caffeine and so count towards your water intake. If you exercise in the dark or the gym all winter, then take a walk on the beach or in the park at the weekend. These places are not reserved just for summer – get outside, get some fresh air and, if the sun shines, you’ll get a dose of vitamin D. Hang in there, tough it out, it’s not long until spring. eastlife | july 2015 |

Ajay ladles out dining changes Ajay Zalte has successfully practised his career philosophy of “I make the place, the place doesn’t make me” throughout hotels in India, Europe, Dubai, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Tahiti, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Now his culinary creed is taking effect at Waipuna International Hotel and Conference Centre. As the new executive chef for the Waipuna Hotel Group, Ajay Zalte is wasting no time working his special magic in the kitchen – menus and staff are benefiting from his energy and vision. Photos Wayne Martin
“I’ve always believed that it’s for me to use my skills, training and talent to improve, enhance and bring out the best in a venue. “I am there to ensure I expand the dining experience rather than me hoping to benefit from a restaurant or hotel’s already established reputation.” With this commitment extending to recognising young talent in the kitchen, Ajay is already encouraging innovation from his team and from students at a nearby training facility. In no time, he has set about invigorating menus both at the group’s hotel restaurant, Wellington’s and its in-house conference centre as well as at the Highbrook Drive Conference Centre. The menus are presently being revamped for wedding and conference packages at both sites while Wellington’s is already profiting from Ajay’s exacting standards for quality, freshness,
kitchen-created and, where possible, New Zealand-sourced. “Food should always be fresh, innovative and partly indicative of the country it represents,” he says. “With this in mind, all sauces and gravies are now made from scratch in the kitchen, I endeavour to use as many New Zealand spices and herbs as possible and, when it comes to meat, the emphasis is on premium grade New Zealand meats including Savannah grass-fed Angus beef. It’s important we showcase the best of our own country. “We are also giving a contemporary twist to many dishes that may be representative of a culture or country but which some diners are still diffident about trying. “For example, a recent banquet request included a preference for some Polynesian food but instead of opting for taro and cassava our chefs created a dessert dish of crepes
served with our own freshly-made creamed coconut and milk sauce which took everyone by surprise. They loved it.” Specialty food and live cooking stations are also part of the dining facelift at Wellington’s and one of the most popular moves has been the introduction of themed dining on Thursday and Friday evenings. Ajay says Italian, Mongolian BBQ, and Shanghai Nights events have been a hit. “Themed buffets are a great way to experience different cuisine in small tastes and I plan to introduce a further theme night.” And it doesn’t stop there. Struck by Waipuna’s stunning north-facing views over the lagoon, Ajay has taken a closer look at the breakfast menu making a number of changes which will be ongoing to ensure current customer demands are met at all times.

Unique Venue For Hire
“This must be one of Auckland’s most beautiful venues at any time of the day as it receives all day sun but in the morning it is especially beautiful when the water is still and there is a real sense of peace and beauty. “I’m hoping local folk will rediscover this as the perfect place for family or business breakfasts.” With his culinary imagination unleashed, Ajay says even the high tea, which is a favourite at Wellington’s, is being tweaked to include a few more very special items as is the bar menu. “Of course, our Saturday night Dine and Dance and the Sunday family night with children’s magician remain in place although there have been changes to the a la carte menu. Across the board, it’s an exciting time in the kitchen and bringing on new dishes is just one part,” he says. “Inspiring enthusiasm in our young chefs is another and, with the

Season the sauce as well as sprouts and bacon to taste. Serve beef rib on a plate, top with roasted bacon and brussel sprouts, spoon over reduced sauce. Garnish with fresh chervil or thyme and serve hot. Chef’s note: Beef short ribs are availble at any local butcher, trimmed or cut as desired. 1.3kg pork tenderloin 1 c soy sauce 1/2 c honey 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tbsp minced garlic 1 tsp ground cumin 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp ground black pepper 60ml hazelnut liqueur 60ml Manuka Gold
Honeylicious Cake 3 c sifted all-purpose flour 3/4 c liquid honey 3 tsp baking powder 1/2 c evaporated milk 1/2 c water 1 c brown sugar 1/4 tsp anise extract 1 tbsp Manuka Gold 1 tsp molasses
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour batter in an 8 by 4-inch loaf pan and bake in a 350°F oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Drip Manuka Gold over cake to give the extra punch of honey liqueur.

Five Stags captures heart of Whitford An iconic building in Whitford, the former General Store has, since 1910, served as a supply store, post office, knitting shop, restaurant, even a brothel. Now beginning a new chapter as home to gastropub Five Stags, its role as a community hub looks set to continue under the auspices of born and bred local, John East. Warm and welcoming with the downto-earth charm of a rustic hunting lodge, it’s easy to feel right at home at Five Stags in Whitford. Enter the charming old colonial building and you’re immediately struck by the five stags keeping watch above the rough-hewn timber bar. Comfy leather couches, booth seating, tartan and timber are right at home alongside horse and farming kit and other memorabilia left over from the past 100-plus years. Repurposed as a wine cellar, an original post office vault features in the dining room and photographs charting the community’s history sit proudly on the walls. While the building’s exterior is essentially the same, the interior has a much more open plan feel. A new bar sits centrally within the space, with a bar area off to the left and lounge and dining to the right. A ‘Hunter’s Cabin’ functions as a semi-private dining or meeting room, while outside the wrap-around verandah has ample new seating and a double-sided fireplace. Generously portioned and affordably priced, the Five Stags menu is described as generous, hearty and rustic New Zeasland food for hunters and friends alike. Sure to satisfy after a honest day’s work, large plates include the Barry Crump tender slow-cooked beef short ribs with spicy L&P and Wild Turkey glaze with crispy duck fat potatoes; and the Captain Cooker, a two-person serve of roasted pork with parmesan, lemon and sage, and baked, creamy sweetcorn. Smaller bites range from seared smoked duck breast with cherry compote, preserved orange and port glaze; to country terrine with www.eastlife.co.nz
chicken liver and brandy pepper pate, wholemeal toast, sweet onion confit and Cumberland sauce; and hot smoked South Island salmon with fresh dill, pickle, sour cream and rye bread.
A born and bred local, Five Stags proprietor John East is heavily involved in Pakuranga Rugby Club where he sits on the board, and lives in Howick with his partner Jane and parents and siblings nearby.
Fresh from the sea, chef Jonny Murray’s signature fish and chips are generously portioned with two fillets of fresh Mac’s Gold-battered gurnard, crispy Five Stag chips, tartare sauce and lemon.
A love of the iconic building, a chance meeting and a desire for a change in lifestyle have seen this former butcher and telco manager take on the role of all-round ‘head stag’.
Burger lovers are well catered for with beef, chicken and fish options and no self-respecting Caesar fan should go past the Clevedon Coast Classic Caesar Salad, another of the chef’s specialties.
“Growing up around here, the General Store has always been part of my life, so it’s a real treat to own her after all these years. She has so much history and is such a special place in the community; we hope to honour that and steer her well for years to come.”
At the bar, there’s a wide choice of premium and craft beers on offer, with seven on tap including Stella Artois, Steinlager Classic, Speight’s Gold Medal Ale and Mac’s Gold. An impressive selection of the best regionally specific wines includes drops from Wither Hills, The Ned, the Marisco Kings Series, Mt Difficulty and Huntaway. There is plenty to be enjoyed from the historic in-house wine cellar.
Joining East is head chef, Jonny Murray who has built a solid reputation at Mt Eden’s Horse & Trap and most recently the Northcote Tavern, where his specialty pies and fish and chips sold out most days. Serving not just the local community but those from further afield, the quaint semi-rural Whitford township is a popular stop along
the picturesque Pohutakawa Coast Highway. And while there are a handful of Five Stags across the country, the name does seem well suited with local reports of deer in the nearby Whitford forest, a popular spot for mountain biking just a kilometre or so away. A great spot to relax with friends and family, why not check it out? Whether you’re a local or just passing through, everyone’s welcome at Five Stags.

in your comfort zone Many Kiwis were as shocked as I earlier this year when hearing the wretched news that one of New Zealand’s best loved cookbook authors, Alison Holst, has been diagnosed with dementia. She has now formally retired from all culinary work; I am so saddened by this diagnosis. Like many women of my age, I relied on Alison’s kitchen advice as a young newlywed – I have several of her early cookbooks – and it isn’t that long ago since I last attended the launch of one of her books written in conjunction with son, Simon. They were both there, we exchanged pleasantries and I ended up buying several of her more recent cookbooks for my daughter, now a mum herself who enjoys baking for her two wee sons. However, to my delight, another book has been released from this dynamic mother and son duo and is bound to become a kitchen classic. In this latest publication, Alison and Simon deliver a range of hearty recipes – including: Alison’s Lazy

Denheath desserts – DElectable! Denheath Desserts, a New Zealand family business based in Timaru, started out more than 26 years ago as a small rural café called Denheath House in the beautiful town of Pleasant Point, South Canterbury. Today it is a thriving gourmet dessert company, with an online presence, supplying orders throughout the country and to an international market. Read how an old fashioned recipe notebook grew into a flourishing business. The rise of gourmet company, Denheath Desserts, must be one of the sweetest success stories around. The original owners were Dennis and Heather – hence the name Denheath – and when the couple came to sell, they agreed that Heather’s notebook, crammed full of her recipes, could go with the property to be used by the new owners. On the strength of Heather’s gourmet custard square, one Carol Rutland was convinced that Denheath House was worth buying. So, in 1996, she purchased the café. Carol and her family ran the business for many years and word spread of the iconic custard squares. People started coming from far and wide to sample the unique, fluffy, high rise, melt-in-your-mouth, rich and creamy, custard-filled treat. Pretty soon everyone in the family realised Carol had been right about the potential of Denheath. Sadly, in 1999, at just 53, Carol learned she was terminally ill. At that point Donald and Lisa Templeton (Carol’s daughter) stepped in and took over the business, trademarking “Denheath” for the first time. They also started building a factory kitchen in Timaru. During this time Carol told her daughter and
son-in-law about her dream that the gourmet custard squares would eventually be sold throughout New Zealand and overseas too. On handing the business reins to Donald and Lisa, Carol enjoyed quality family time, before passing away in July 2000 leaving a legacy to fulfil. The following year the new kitchen was completed. In the wake of Carol’s passing, the Templetons were coping with the arrival of a new baby, as well as managing the business. They describe that period as “desperately sad, busy, exciting, challenging and scary.” But, despite the challenges, they went from strength to strength. While initially begun as a single product company, Denheath began to expand, supplying first to cafes in Christchurch and Dunedin, then to Auckland in 2003. Before long, Denheath had outlets and distributors across the country. Using some of the original, wholesome recipes which came with the café, Denheath’s range was extended to flavoured custard squares, cheesecakes, profiteroles and E-squares (the innovative, world first, square éclair.) Requests poured in for Donald and Lisa to courier Denheath’s iconic custard squares all over New Zealand. As demand escalated, the

Original Gourmet Custard Square. It was the company’s first foray into the international market. Now two years on Denheath Desserts also supply to South Korea and Japan and are negotiating with other regions. spicy pulled pork Serves 8 Prep time: 15 minutes plus one hour to marinate Cooking time: 6 hours Make a pig for yourself this winter, thanks to this warming recipe from The Quiet Gut Cookbook.
Ingredients Pork • 3 tbsp paprika • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 1 tbsp dry mustard • 3 tbsp salt • 1 pork shoulder or butt roast (approx 2 kg) Sauce • 1 1/2 cups white-wine vinegar • 1 cup onion and garlic-free mustard • 1/3 cup onion and garlic-free tomato sauce • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar • 1 tbsp garlic oil (see below) • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp cayenne • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Method In a small bowl combine paprika, brown sugar, dry mustard and salt.
42 | eastlife | july 2015
Rub spice blend all over pork, cover and refrigerate for at least one hour or as long as overnight. Preheat oven to approx 150°C. Roast pork in roasting pan for six hours, until meat falls apart (meat thermometer should read 75°C). While pork is in the oven, prepare the sauce. In a medium saucepan, combine vinegar, mustard, tomato sauce, brown sugar, garlic oil, salt, cayenne and black pepper; bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar is completely dissolved (roughly 10 mins). Remove from heat. When pork is ready, remove from oven and rest for 10 mins. While pork is still warm, shred using two forks. Place shredded meat in a large bowl and mix in half the sauce. Serve with additional sauce wrapped in corn tortillas or piled on gluten-free buns. CHEF’S NOTE: To avoid tying up the oven all day, make this dish in a slow cooker. Rub meat with the spice mixture and place in slow cooker with 1 cup of chicken broth. Cover and cook on low for approx 10 hours, until meat is falling apart.
Garlic Oil – makes one cup Garlic is off limits on the low-FODMAP diet, but this oil allows us to enjoy the garlic flavour essential to many recipes. Heat 1 cup olive oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add 6 cloves garlic and cook at a low
simmer, stirring often, for five mins. Strain oil through a fine-meshed sieve and discard solids. Refrigerate oil in a covered container for up to a week before use. Chef’s Note: Alternatively, use 1/2 onion (thinly sliced) instead of garlic, or a combination of both (1/4 onion and 3 cloves garlic). www.eastlife.co.nz

Food bites Fried, tried and Thailicious Grabone vouchers are proving their worth when it comes to eating out cheaply and have paved the way for trying new dishes, restaurants and cuisine styles. Although Thai cooking has been pretty well tried on our shores, and found to be a true delight, one wonders how many patrons would opt for a fried rice dish over the great stir fries, curries, noodles and sizzling dishes that come out of this diverse land. If it hasn’t occurred to anyone to try Thai fried rice check out Khao Pad Supparo with vegetables, pineapple and crispy pork at Rattana Thai, Eastern Beach – a delicious variation of a simple dish and extremely filling. Enjoyed in a typically attractive Thai setting with a lovely view of the sea, who could want for more?
Making its mark Why not sashimi along to the not long opened Miyuki Japanese Restaurant in Howick Village? EastLife has heard only good things about this venue where one regular says she can’t get enough of the smoked salmon or the fresh green salad. “This place has been a revelation,” she told us. “We usually order a main then several smaller dishes and share the lot – so good.” Well, that’s enough to convince the team that we too should try Miyuki and pass judgment.
Sweeter than ever As it’s name suggests Italian-style restaurant, Passito – which takes its name from a sweet wine-making process – grows more agreeable
Local meanderings with a focus on food has turned up some outstanding morsels for foodies.
Good news at Good Home
with each passing day. Though this Ti Rakau Drive venue has been open for only a few months, already it is maturing into a discerning restaurant having refined its menu and expanded its wine list.
It should be a goodie...the new(ish) menu at the Prospect of Howick’s Good Home, that is. It has to be better than the original which stopped the hunger pangs but was somewhat limited when it came to the mains. Looking at the latest version, slow roasted shoulder of lamb with thyme & rosemary, boulangere potatoes, buttered green beans and minted pan juices; and confit of duck leg served with crushed lentil potato, baked carrot pave’, wilted spinach, and a honey & grain mustard dressing, sound especially, well, good!
Offering fab wood fired pizzas and pastas is almost a given but it is the changing seasonal mains that particularly hit the mark. Tasteful decor, welcoming service and commitment to listening to what patrons want has seen Passito develop into a popular venue.
Meeting of the ways

Weekend outings and grandies are a fairly natural fit but who would have thought soaking up a mix of Spongebob and Japanese cuisine would be a highlight for both the ‘olds’ and the ‘kid’s? The story goes that one EastLife grandparent was less than delighted when grandson ordered his outing wish list topped by – The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water. What’s more, that particular grandchild was less than delighted when Nanny struck a bargain – “you can have Spongebob if we can all have Japanese for dinner.” But the deal was made and off they all went. Outcome: Spongebob was hilarious – Nanny and grandson laughed their heads off; dinner at Kaiseki Ichizen Japanese Restaurant in Chapel Road was a huge success. That’s because grandson’s first taste of Japanese small plates (other than sushi, which he loves) went down a treat, he gobbled up pork raki, teriyaki chicken, dumplings and prawn and bacon yaki like an
double treat Dinner at Kaiseki Ichizen Japanese Restaurant in Chapel Road was a huge success.”
old hand. Moral of the story: Never judge a mix of young and old to be wearisome. This was an example of ‘the wise’ and ‘the wonderful’ being entirely in sync.
Lowlander could be a high-lander Sadly, Ceylon Sizzle Gastrobar and Kitchen (tucked away in Cortina Place, Pakuranga) didn’t make it. Although the venue started with a small hiss and a roar, before long the meals failed to sizzle. But now a newcomer has landed and who knows to what heights the Lowlander will soar. The atmosphere is friendly so here’s hoping it makes the grade and climbs the good taste ladder.
Who can resist the two course $19.90 meal deal Tuesday to Thursday nights at Barracuda, Eastern Beach. Choose soup and a main or main and a dessert – delicious options to ensure you are replete for the night! BYOW makes this super-duper value.
Winging it on a budget If the bank balance is bust foodies still have plenty to crow about at The Waypoint in East Tamaki. On Wednesday nights, the hottest chicks around can be found on the plate at this popular corner bar (junction of Smales and Harris Roads). For just $1 per wing patrons can order as many deep fried chicken wings as they please. Team those with wedges topped with bacon, cheese and sour cream ($12) and you’ll soon feel like Yankee Doodle Dandy with a feather in your cap. Of course, between the bar snack, lunch and dinner menus, there’s plenty to make you shake your tail feathers, too!

It packs real flavour punch and will bring out your inner Mexican – arriba, arriba! MaC’s dOes It My Way Never mind the tonic (water), here’s Mid Vicious! While some brews are pretty vacant of flavour, this pale ale is loaded with hops, and with tropical fruit notes it’s ideal during winter or holidays in the sun. What’s more, at 2.5% ABV, it won’t be a stepping stone for silly things who go too far. So c’mon everybody, this really is something else and it’s no fun missing out! This month EastLife introduces a new series – My Favourite Thing – in which we ask locals to tell us about their favourite item in the home. First up is Point View resident, Helena van der Merwe from Invesure Productions – specialists in promotional business videos and event filming – who tells us about her favourite item.
MY FAVOURITE THING
VINTAGE SKI LoDGE CHIC… You can almost taste that first sip of Glühwein … or Jagertee, if you prefer! Dreams of that Austrian ski holiday – or Queenstown Winterfest – seem tantalisingly close when you outfit your home chalet with vintage European snow gear.
I had to think hard – there are so many things I love. But, then, I thought of my old friend, my Elna sewing machine and I cannot think of life without her.
The Antique Shop has a great range of vintage skis, wooden toboggans, snow shoes and vintage ice skates. The wooden sleds re-purpose beautifully as small coffee tables in front of that roaring winter fire while the gorgeous vintage skis and poles make a great style statement propped casually against a wall.
I have spent hours and hours in front of that machine. When you spend a lot of time with somebody they become a friend, a person you talk to when you need comfort, someone who listens without talking back. That’s what my Elna has offered me over many years.
And, if it really does turn bitter, there’s nothing better than a vintage fur wrap to snuggle up in before venturing outside or to luxuriously wrap up the day when you come inside … winter has never looked so good. All available at The Antique Shop, Howick. open 7 days.
– LoVE AFFAIR SEWN UP oVER 40 YEARS
I bought her by instalments in 1971 and was in love from the beginning. I found it easy to think a problem through while listening to her soft ‘singing’ and when sad, I discovered no one heard soft crying when she was burbling along. So, we two spent hours together, thinking, talking, singing, listening.
THE ANTIQUE SHOP
I come from a sewing family; my grandmother was a great sewer; so was my mother. When I married the logical thing to do was to buy a sewing machine. over the years many metres of fabric have passed through my Elna’s shuttle. I can recall the first dress I made for my daughter (not a great success). I remember sewing school concert costumes, night after night, till the wee hours of the morning and I can still see my son sitting on the floor, next to the machine, contemplating the future and arm wrestling with www.eastlife.co.nz
Photo Wayne Martin
With an over-locker you have a love/hate relationship, battling to get the thread into the right places. With my Elna I know the rules. Put in the bobbin – ensure it clicks – no problems – as easy as that! I just follow the rules and she delivers and has done for more than 40 years.
Helena van der MerWe life’s big questions, all the while, the sewing machine singing in his ear. A few years ago my husband insisted I spoil myself with a new machine and I did, an Elna embroidery machine, but I hardly used it.
She is a solid machine, made of some sort of iron alloy. The paint has faded and, these days, her shuttle is a bit temperamental – wear and tear, they say. But you cannot throw out friends just because they no longer function as they once did.... friends stick together till the end.
Will I ever give her up, the old Elna with the marks of many years work? No, I won’t. I will be sewing on her until I finally give up sewing altogether.
When I can no longer sew, my daughter, who is a sewer too, will be the lucky receiver of this old friend. I hope she will learn to love her, as much as I do.
The Antique Shop is one of the few left in the city stocking jewellery from different periods and everything from industrial lighting to furniture. It is open 7 days a week, alongside The Apothecary, so stop in for a browse while your other half reads the paper with their coffee.
The Antique Shop buys and sells quality items.

On the lighter side... BE-LEAF IT OR NOT... Swedish design extends far beyond flat packs and meatballs from IKEA! While winter may be over in northern climes, downunder the dark days are here. However, thanks to Green Furniture Concept from Sweden, Kiwis can also light up their lives in a very different way. Designed to bring the outdoors in, the Leaf Lamp range is both functional and stylish. Featuring larger ‘tree’ models – most suited to public spaces – as well as ‘floor lamps’ and ‘pendants’ – perfect for the home – this range mirrors nature itself. Made from natural materials, including trunks fashioned from Swedish birch, Leaf Lamps present a fashionable marriage of nature and high-tech design. See greenfurniture.se for more information.

from pot to pot... Leucogenes grandiceps
The hills are alive – with New Zealand edelweiss Growing to just 15cm in height, New Zealand edelweiss is a little rocker that’s born to be wild!
Leucogenes leontopodium
Characterised by its small, white flowers, edelweiss is synonymous with scenic winter landscapes, and the romantic view of pristine mountainsides. It grows naturally in New Zealand’s alpine areas – between the tree-line and lower limit of permanent snow – in the North, South and Stewart Islands. New Zealand edelweiss includes South Island and North Island species – (Leucogenes grandiceps and Leucogenes leontopodium), although the North Island variety is much rarer due to the volcanic nature of the environment required. A hardy perennial, edelweiss can withstand temperatures below freezing, provided it receives a few hours of sunlight each day. www.eastlife.co.nz
Featuring more than 45 edible plants and numerous recipes, How to Grow Edibles in Containers has something for all tastes and seasons. Following on from her successful 2013 work, How to Grow Microgreens, this book is the latest in a long line of handy guides by a genuine garden (and kitchen) guru. Although designed with the small-scale gardener in mind, the principles provided in this book can be adapted to suit gardens of any size.
Many people really came to appreciate the edelweiss after this alpine beauty leapt to worldwide renown when it became the focus of a beautiful song in the film, The Sound of Music. Related to the Swiss edelweiss, the New Zealand varieties can be tamed; proving an interesting addition to any rock garden.
If Fionna is king of the hill when it comes to gardening, she’s also queen of the kitchen!
• How to Grow Edibles in Containers – good produce from small spaces, by Fionna Hill. Published by David Bateman. RRP $29.99.

The lovely edelweiss adopts green colouring in winter, retaining its leaves. While the aerial part of the plant may die off, it will develop again as edelweiss returns to blossom in spring. While growing edelweiss is possible in lowland areas, it’s important to prevent moisture on the leaves particularly during periods of high humidity.
Watering is not usually necessary during winter, but the soil should be kept moist with just a few cups of water every couple of weeks. As temperatures rise, fungus and insect attacks can become a problem for this alpine maiden. Fungicide and insecticide treatments should be applied before the plant starts to flower.
EastLife has TWO copies of Fionna Hill’s latest work How To Grow Edibles in Containers up for grabs. See the competitions section at eastlife.co.nz to enter. One entry per person/email address; entries close July 31, 2015. Winner notified by phone or email.
A granular, slow release fertiliser should be administered every few months once spring arrives. Flowering plants can also benefit from liquid fertiliser mixed with water once a month. Edelweiss is definitely one for South Island or high country gardeners to consider growing. eastlife | july 2015 |

Median down – Volume up Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.
May figures, from REINZ, for our area “Eastern Beaches” show another month in which the median price has eased back, down to $858,000, lower than April’s $873,000 (down 1.7%) and March’s record high of $878,750 (down 2.4%). The May 2015 median of $858,000 relative to May 2014 at $772,500 represents an increase of 11% over the 12 month period – somewhat modest compared to most recent 12-month comparisons which have ranged between 13 and 14%. The number of sales at 274 was an increase over April’s 191, and nearly matched March’s 276 (and March, at 276, represented the highest number of sales since May 2007).
Listings are still in short supply with a check on properties available on realestate.co.nz for our area still showing well under the 300 mark or, at the current level of sales, just over a month’s supply. Looking nationally, the median price for May was $460,000 – up $5000 (or 1.1%) from April. Over the past 12 months this represents an increase from May 2014 of $30,000 (or 7.0%). If, however, Auckland is excluded from the national figures the national median price was down $4000 (or -1.1%) compared to April and up only $9,000 to $349,000 (or +2.6%) when compared to May 2014. A scary figure is the number of
Auckland sales with a sales price of $1million or more, when comparing May 2015 to May 2014 – an increase of 120%, from 384 to 843. On the flip side, according to figures from RPNZ, the current speed of the annual increase in Auckland’s property prices is not as high as it was in the period from 2002 to 2004 and also back in the period from late 1994 to early 1996, and to quote them, “so this latest rate of increase is actually not that extraordinary.” I spoke last month about the Reserve Bank and the Government’s moves to try and curb the rapid rise in Auckland’s property prices. However, the Reserve Bank last week appeared to have a bit of an about face by lowering the Official Cash Rate from 3.50% to 3.25%. Weakening dairy prices and the effect this could have on the overall economy appeared to be of more concern to them than rising Auckland property prices.
on the books In light of much speculation regarding the Auckland property market, it can seem near impossible for small, part time ‘mom and pop’ investors to compete with overseas moguls, but it can be done! In Buy & Hold, Alika and Rahul show how to achieve greater financial security through long-term property investment without having to give up day jobs. “We’ve seen people live pay cheque to pay cheque to pay the bills and look forward to days off. We wanted the same pay cheque to serve a bigger purpose,” says Rahul. “Don’t fire the boss, keep your day job and, in this way, people can have houses where values grow, sometimes slowly and at times quickly.” www.eastlife.co.nz
Alika and Rahul have developed their strategy based on 15 years buying, renovating and selling houses. Stressing the importance of the long game, over quick turnaround, quick profit (and the risks associated with this), their book features lessons they’ve learnt along the way. Particularly relevant considering new tax laws, Buy & Hold is designed to show how owning multiple properties doesn’t have to be a dream that only others ever achieve. “One does not have to buy only in the central suburbs, we can buy in peripheral areas where yields are better. Even though gains may be a little slower, these still provide that next step on the property ladder. The secret is to buy and hold for the long term!” • Buy & Hold by Alika and Rahul Rai. Published by Potton & Burton. RRP $29.99.
Dear reader... according to a recent Research New Zealand survey, journalists are Kiwis least trusted profession. While this is not a shock to we poor, diligent scribes, it does beg the questions: would we lie to you? If your answer to this is no, then you’re mistaken. Yes, we would lie to you, but not (at least intentionally) in print. You see, Journalists are (by and large) ethical creatures; some because we genuinely value truth (which is, elusive at best), but most simply because it is uneconomic to be otherwise. Unlike those who hide behind parliamentary privilege, or in mum’s basement (aka the blogger’s den), a lapse in our integrity can see readers (and advertisers) turn away, or even result in our bosses being sued. Result? No cash, no pay, no job.
Home ownership It’s often thought that no investment really is as safe as houses; however to one Auckland couple, property has proved key to their financial security.
Trust me, I’m a journo!
Bear in mind that, as we are simply citizens who report on events we think you want to hear about, responding to perceived demand, if here there be monsters, then we are monsters of your making.

So please don’t shoot the messenger and, if you must, then remember, it’s your stories we’re telling... we don’t make them up!

Blues bag Umaga As one All Black great signs off, another has signed up in efforts to reverse the flagging fortunes of the Auckland Blues. Former All Black captain, Tana Umaga, has been appointed to the role of head coach with the Auckland Super Rugby franchise, replacing Sir John Kirwan. However, will a coaching change be enough to turn the team around? Last month, former Blues board member and current All Black selector, Grant Fox, told EastLife that he believed more would be needed to better the Blues. “He [Kirwan] is a mate and it’s not been easy for him. The Blues haven’t succeeded for a long time, but it’s very clear that it’s much more than a coaching issue. I think there has been some progress that will serve the Blues well in future, but everyone looks at scoreboard results and you can’t change the fact that they haven’t been good,” Fox said. “If you want job security, don’t become a rugby coach! Yes, as a mate [I am saddened for him] but it’s
the choice you make and the risk you take.” Umaga believes he is up to the task. “I am excited at the opportunity and, of course, understand there’s a big challenge ahead for us all [and] there’s no quick fix to turn things around,” he said. “It’s going to take a lot of very hard work which will be my focus. I want to let our performances on the field do the talking. “I have enjoyed my time at Counties Manukau, the people I have met and worked with and the support I have received. This region and the Steelers will always be special to me.”
tana umaga Steve Tew, supports Kirwan’s decision and welcomes Umaga’s appointment.
Kirwan resigned on June 19, saying: “I had a chance to take a breath and reflect about the situation, my future and above all my love of this Blues club and the players. I do not walk away from a challenge... however, I always said if I didn’t bring about the results that the players, the club and the fans wanted, then I would step aside.”
“Tana is very well equipped to step up. He spent valuable time in the ITM Cup with Counties Manukau, has coached at the top level in France and was part of the coaching team that steered New Zealand Under-20 to success in the recent World Championship. “We wish Tana all the best and will ensure he has the support he needs
New Zealand Rugby chief executive,
to allow him to make his mark.” Tew also commented: “John has given his all for the Blues. He has worked very hard to try and turn the team’s fortunes around... and we appreciate [his] contribution. We support that decision, thank JK sincerely and wish him all the best for the future.” Umaga will take up his position at the end of this year’s ITM Cup. Vacant assistant coach roles should be filled within the next two months.

Frank
When asked to ‘watch Walter Little’, perhaps players should have kept an eye on the dancing feet of said ex-All Black’s regular midfield partner! While Frank Bunce often sidestepped the opposition during his impressive rugby career, when JON RAWLINSON spoke with him, he was nothing if not... Frank.
“All Blacks, for sure! But I still want Samoa to do well” he says. Noting selection balance as crucial to the ABs’ chances of securing backto-back World Cups, Frank believes a certain Pakuranga United progeny is likely to shine come September. “I think [Malakai] Fekitoa is already pushing [Conrad] Smith hard and will only get better with experience. His distribution isn’t great, but he’ll settle and become Smith-like, only with more line-breaking ability. He has everything going for him.” Considering Smith and Ma’a Nonu are headed abroad post-cup, Frank thinks Fekitoa could go on to rival himself as one of the country’s best midfielders. “It’s hard to know [if he’ll be better than I was] but he’s already bloody faster for sure!” Despite Auckland being New Zealand rugby’s largest catchment area, he adds the Blues missed a trick by letting the Tongan-born star slip through their fingers. “The Blues have got a couple of selection decisions wrong, but as JK [John Kirwan] said, ‘We can’t sign them all!’.” Now coaching with Thames Valley (Heartland Championship) and Manukau Rovers (club side), Frank has prior experience with Auckland. However, he has no Super Rugby coaching aspirations and (prior to the recent confirmation that Kirwan would step down) said sometimes nice guys finish last. “No chance! I have no desire to make a career from coaching. I feel sorry for John [Kirwan], though, he’s a hell of a nice guy. He always had flair, style and saw the game differently.” Frank’s own World Cup campaigns ended in defeat (Samoa out in the ’91 quarters and the All Blacks beaten www.eastlife.co.nz
by the ‘Boks in the 1995 final), but he rates these tournaments as career highlights. “We [Manu Samoa] were pretty happy in 1991. We punched above our weight and could have done even better. “And that final, [All Blacks’ 15-12 loss to South Africa], the importance of it and the atmosphere; it was huge! It meant a hell of a lot to both teams. It was hot; running out on to Ellis Park everything exploded; we could feel the tension. There was great disappointment afterwards, which did grow – 24 years in between [wins] is a long time!” Many would agree the ’95 team could match today’s All Blacks. “Our ’95 team would’ve done pretty well against the current crop. We had the balance right and a lot of talent, Andrew Mehrtens, Jeff Wilson and Jonah [Lomu] of course – a good core with some great young guys too. We would have done okay.” A long time between drinks (and cups) may have fuelled fans’ obsession with winning William Webb, however Frank believes it is more the four-year planning cycle between attempts which has adversely influenced the game. “World Cups are the pinnacle and what it all comes down to. Yet had we won every one, fans may have become a bit blasé about them,” he says. “Fixation on the four-year cycle is to the detriment [of the game]. Everyone looks ahead rather than at the here and now. I think the All Blacks are focused on winning each game, but it’s tough because fans will only accept a loss every now and again, and only if they go down fighting!”
Bunce backs island tour Ahead of the All Blacks’ first ever test in Samoa (July 8), former Manu Samoa and, ex All Black centre, Frank Bunce, says the game will hold great significance for island rugby. “The All Blacks have much to gain – in terms of support and perception. It’ll
‘

As a veteran of two Rugby World Cups (’91, with Manu Samoa, ’95 with the All Blacks), Orere Point local and 55 All Black-capped Frank Bunce has viewed New Zealand’s world cup campaigns from a unique perspective. These days he’s primarily a fan but which team does he cheer for?
frank bunce That final, the importance of it and the atmosphere... It was hot; running out on to Ellis Park everything exploded; we could feel the tension. There was great disappointment afterwards, which did grow – 24 years in between [wins] is a long time!”
be huge for supporters, being the first time the All Blacks play there. “There’s been a massive contribution from Pacific Islanders to the [success of] the All Blacks. Some of their greatest backs – such as Jonah Lomu and BG Williams – were of Island heritage,” he says. Criticism – particularly from certain northern hemisphere rugby writers – that New Zealand has ‘pillaged’ the cream of Pacific island talent, is flatly rejected.
“That’s rubbish! There’s been argument about whether island players are taken for granted but many have been born or grown up here. They’ve come through the grades, the clubs and had the benefit of all that too, so I don’t think such comments are fair,” he says. “There’s not a lot of money in the islands, so many families come here to better their future. While there are advantages to New Zealand rugby, there are many benefits for Pacific people too.” When the All Blacks play in Apia, Frank believes it will be a ‘win-win’ for both unions, particularly if fixtures become more regular, both at home and abroad. “For most Samoan fans the All Blacks are, if not their number one team, then definitely number two. Even though they won’t all be top players, it won’t matter; they’re still the All Blacks!” eastlife | july 2015 |

Facelifts and realignments EastLife was one of four New Zealand publications invited to attend a two-day Australian BMW 1 Series and 6 Series launch in Brisbane last month. ALISTAIR DAVIDSoN compares markets and gets behind the wheel to experience both ends of the BMW range.
Aussies don’t like losing. Anyone who has watched rugby, cricket, league or any other trans-Tasman clash will know that for a fact. The new vehicle sales race isn’t any different. Sitting in on the Australian BMW press conference highlighted the difference between its market, and ours. In Aussie, 1 Series is sitting in third spot behind Audi A3 and MercedesBenz A Class. of the three German marques BMW is the one in catch-up mode, and like Aussie sportspeople, it’s not at all happy about it. The reason for the press function was to showcase both 1 Series and 6 Series models’ LCI, or ‘Life Cycle Impulse’. What on Earth is a Life Cycle Impulse? A mild facelift, that’s what. 1 Series’ styling changes are limited to headlights, larger grille, elongated and sleeker tail lights; the kind of thing you need to be a BMW train spotter to pick. Looks aside, BMW Australia saw the LCI as an opportunity to give 1 Series a real shot in the arm by adding significant specification upgrades and realigning the price to make it more competitive.
60 | eastlife | july 2015
In other words, lots more goodies for not a lot more (and in some cases less) Aussie dollars. The four Kiwi motor noters could have stayed in the bar at the flash hotel where the early evening press conference was being held, because New Zealand’s market is an entirely different beastie. Sure, we do get the sharp new look and interior upgrades, and some worthwhile additional features, but the outgoing 1 Series was already competitive with its rivals in price and specification so no drastic realignment was required for our market. Instead BMW New Zealand used the two LCIs as an opportunity to cull the herd at both ends of its model line-up. The 1 Series has gone from five variants to three. The 116i and 118d are toast, leaving the 118i, 125i and the range-topping M 135i rocket ship. Initially, the entry-level 118i will have a carry-over 100kW/220Nm four-cylinder engine. It will be replaced with a three-cylinder with similar outputs but significantly better fuel economy from July’s production (available last quarter of this year).
BMW NZ says the changes to the line-up are in response to ‘market situation and customer demands’. Sales of 1 Series diesel peaked at 84 units in 2012, dropped to just four in 2014, and BMW hasn’t sold one this year.
Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe in 6 and M6 variants. Now 6 Series buyers will have just two to choose from: M6 Coupe (high performance two-door) and Gran Coupe 650i (luxurious four-door), which makes total sense.
Why? The 1 Series petrol engines are so frugal nowadays; unless you travel massive distances there’s no real saving with a diesel, particularly when you factor in road user charges.
The two-day launch was a ripper. The afternoon of the first day didn’t pan out for BMW as the M 135i track session at Lakeside Raceway in Brisbane was hampered by heavy rain.
There are even more casualties in the 6 Series range. Until its extremely minor facelift (why change a good thing?) we had

This meant we couldn’t explore the upper limits of this 240kW/450Nm hot hatch’s acceleration and outright speed, but it did illustrate the high level of grip available in treacherous conditions. It was just as well we didn’t hang out in the bar during the Aussies’ press briefing because day two featured an extensive urban and rural drive in the entry-level $48,500 118i and $59,990 125i. The varied mix of roads showcased just how well these rear-wheel drive small hatches ride and handle (the next generation 1 Series will be front drive). 125i has a firmer ride and obviously more grunt than the 118i, and its standard equipment list is comprehensive.
That’s not to say the entry-level fourcylinder turbo 118i is lacking. It’s a fun drive with excellent balance. After lunch it was hammer time, in the shape of the superb 6 Series Gran Coupe and M6. EastLife drove the $229,500 Gran Coupe over the hills north of Brisbane, where it swallowed the tight, twisting roads with aplomb. We then swapped into the $269,900
M6; what a way to wrap up a press drive!
totally lost trying to find the valet parking area.
M6 is essentially a supercar, offering mind-numbing performance from its 412kW/680Nm twin turbocharged 4.4-litre V8.
It was a launch of contrasts. EastLife book-ended BMW’s model range, starting our drive with the 118i and finishing with the range-topping M6.
From its immense grip to the tastefully understated yet sumptuous interior, M6 is the complete package. It’s equally happy lapping a racetrack as it is lapping Brisbane Airport, as we discovered when we became
The former’s job is to attract new buyers to the BMW brand, while the latter is a hero car for well-heeled BMW owners who want a new toy to play with. Neither will disappoint.

Surveying the surveys ‘ Love ‘em or hate ‘em, surveys are seldom ignored. There is a fascination with the way people live and do business, the choices they make or their penchant for a particular brand, service or creed. Surveys can even change one’s thinking. Here ROBYN YOUSEF examines the turmoil some surveys can generate.
It’s very confusing trying to be healthy when there are so many opposing scientific surveys to be read. As one who has read – and adhered to many – I should know. For example, I have just been through a fortnight of headaches and gallons of peppermint tea, trying to tame my heavy coffee-drinking habit. I finally did it and was feeling good about it until I read an article proclaiming coffee as protection against melanoma.
We’ve all seen those travel posters of 120year-old Sicilian or Greek citizens grinning toothlessly with good health and still walking a donkey up the hill!”
show the same 20 per cent lowered risk and so it was possible caffeine could be the protective factor. At the peak of my addiction, I was probably drinking
But, after the caffeine shock, my naturopath had more unwanted news for me. She also directed me to avoid the nightshade groups of vegetables, which (although it has never been scientifically established) are reputedly bad for arthritis. Tragically, that includes eggplants, capsicum and tomatoes. What’s more, I’m married to a Mediterranean who imports and cooks Mediterranean food beautifully. And wouldn’t you know it – I adore moussaka, lashings of baba ghannouj and a fresh Greek salad with loads of capsicum and tasty, vine-ripened tomatoes.
After all the pains of ‘withdrawal’ I wasn’t about to retreat to my old habits just because coffee had some good PR but, again realised that the plethora of information available from various international studies, surveys and research papers so often refutes the other and can be totally bamboozling. This particular coffee article quoted an observational study, published in the American Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which indicated that people who drank four cups of the black brew each day were 20 per cent less likely to develop malignant melanoma over 10 years than those who didn’t.
(yes, there’s a team of them) and absolutely savour that perfect cup.
Most nights we cook with at least one of these ingredients and I’d always felt quite sanctimonious eating this ‘healthy’ kind of food whilst also quaffing the recommended dose of red wine. You see, I’d read all those surveys about the Mediterranean diet helping to avoid heart disease and, subsequently, to live longer – we’ve all seen those travel posters of 120year-old Sicilian or Greek citizens grinning toothlessly with good health and still walking a donkey up the hill!
And the survey itself had serious scientific legs – definitely not just a casual hands-up over morning tea.
about two cups of tea and up to six (eight on a bad-writing day) cups of coffee daily. And there was the occasional 5pm ‘ultimate pick-me-up’ treat of a small cup of perfect Turkish coffee spiced with cardamom.
However, it wasn’t until I decided to seek assistance from a naturopath for the pain in my arthritic fingers, that it was suggested coffee was particularly bad for inflammation and I should reduce my intake even more.
Data on coffee intake was collected through a dietary survey of 447,357 people. Results also demonstrated that decaffeinated coffee failed to
Gradually, I managed to reduce my caffeine consumption and fortunately, I realised I really enjoyed some herbal teas.
I had a few ropey days but managed to cut down to one WONDERFUL cup of coffee per day. When I’m out, I now choose one of my favourite baristas
Well, my naturopath (as well as many anecdotal surveys) sees it differently and so now I’m on acid-free tomatoes and saving the eggplants for special occasions. I guess the moral of the story is, we just have to sift carefully through all those surveys and believe in good old-fashioned moderation. I’ll raise my one savoured cup a day to that!

Perfect promos Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community Want to promote your products or services? Use a scheme where your potential customer buys the product or service, answers a question and gets the chance to win the product or a prize? This is advertising. It is also a gamble. This should raise a red flag for you under the Gambling Act 2003 which makes gambling illegal unless complex rules are followed. Gambling involves paying for the random chance that you will win something, a lottery for example. It is defined as a scheme or device involving multiple participants. They pay a consideration to directly or indirectly participate. Prizes are distributed according to a draw that takes place after entry has closed. The Gambling Act applies to commercial promotions in a number of ways. A prize competition is where you pay something for the chance of a prize. Prize competitions are treated as gambling and are subject to special rules. You win partly by chance and partly through competing using your knowledge or skill. A sales promotion has an additional factor. The promotional part is the entry requirement to purchase the

goods or services at their usual retail price. Sales promotions are treated more leniently than prize competitions. They are permitted by the Act. Remote interactive gambling (such as using mobile phones) is prohibited by the Act but sales promotions schemes conducted in New Zealand in the form of a lottery are not included. From Incomplete Human Being (IHB) to Terrific Human Being (THB): Part 1 Bill Potter – The Business Maverick. Bill is an international Keynote Speaker and Coach, who has presented in 57 countries. www.speakers.co.nz/ our-speakers/all-speakers/bill-potter www.btob.co.nz/the-business-maverick This is not immediately obvious, because you didn’t know these two conditions existed, didja? French philosopher, René Descartes, determined that... the human being remained ‘incomplete’ until there was a unity between mind and body, with the mind being the superior. Oh. OK. Here ends the ‘heavy’ stuff. Sadly, the IHB (people love abbreviations... Yes?) will not live the ‘fulfilled life’, until he or she attains the advanced status of... THB – IPads, Facebook, Twitter and violent video games, won’t help you to become a THB. Tough! But ‘Google’ just might... The IHB is ‘missing’ important bits of the THB ‘recipe’ (well, TV is nearly all cooking shows now...). Some of the deficiencies of the IHB are obvious, like bad manners, ego-centricity, dishonesty, temper tantrums, empathy-deficit, bullying, gossiping, impatience and the inability to listen. Once you cannot interact well with others, you could eventually become a permanent IHB. Gulp! One major consequence of this is
that you are no longer welcome in places where collaboration, vision and positivity dwell. IHB will surely end careers, opportunities and relationships. The scary part of the IHB ‘condition’ is, that the ‘owners’ of it, mostly do not see any problem with who they are, what they think or what they do. Some have grown up in an IHB environment, and may need more help than they could ever imagine. A THB could offer it. Softer ‘missing bits’ in an IHB, include... lack of confidence, shyness, poor communication skills, inconsistency, lack of persistence and little, if any, initiative. Folks. Our goal is to become a happy, competent, successful THB. Shall we? More about this... in the next EastLife. We offer a personal transformation, PATH : The 3Percenters Course©, for serious Go-getters. It will make you multi-skilled, for living... ‘Best Life’. You become successful and, very ‘interesting’. Really! There are spaces available now! Send me an e-thingie and let’s talk. Till next time. – duitdammit@xtra.co.nz
