HOP INTO COMFY loungewear
Winter calls for comfort – easy wear, casual clothing which is good for the home, good for sitting on the stadium sideline and good for relaxed socialising with friends.
That’s where Father Rabbit loungewear steps up to the mark, offering multi-functional pieces which cross the barriers of traditional loungewear to accompany you throughout out-of-office and weekend life.
Undoubtedly, the coveted Father Rabbit tracksuit is winter’s hero. Crafted from 100% organic cotton, the pants feature luxurious French terry lining, a wide waistband, and a slim line leg with elasticised cuff.
The matching classic crew is a lightweight pullover with an embroidered ‘FR’ logo. Designed in six matching shades, the Father Rabbit tracksuit is easily elevated with a change of shoes and an oversized blazer for weekends.
In addition, Father Rabbit has introduced new colours in its staple classic cotton shirt and boxer short — black gingham and blue stripe.
Made from crisp 100% cotton, paired together the set doubles as sleepwear. Worn separately, the relaxed shirt is finished with shell buttons and a scooped hem – the ultimate oversized shirt to wear with denim.

ANN’S WIG ‘THERAPY’ restores confidence
Beauty therapist and long-time industry tutor, Ann Sheekey has seen women moved to tears when fitted with a wig which is comfortable, looks natural, suits them and, most importantly, conceals their hair loss.
“The words I most often hear are: “I feel human again,” says Ann, who operates Magnolia Wigs from a discreet home studio in Pakuranga.
“Hair loss can have a number of causes but, perhaps, the most common are alopecia, the side effects of cancer treatments or other medical issues and thinning or bare patches due to ageing.”
Having started life as a beauty therapist, Ann has more than 25 years industry experience in a wide variety of roles. She and husband, Terry, immigrated to New Zealand from the United Kingdom 14 years ago. On buying a quiet ‘hideaway’ in Pakuranga, they have remained put.
“Once settled I explored various avenues to use my skills and first worked as a tutor at the College of Camille in Newmarket before running an Upskills course for teenage girls who had left school young and were seeking some training to extend their career options. My classes trained them to be nail technicians; the girls loved it.”
A switch in direction then saw Ann make use of her ESOL training to teach English as a second language but she also set up a small, homebased beauty therapy clinic at home to “keep my hand in!” Then a chance visit to a wig and beauty salon changed her life. Ann saw an avenue where she could help women suffering hair loss.
“I’d previously had a minor issue which resulted in a breast examination. Fortunately, everything was clear but suddenly the idea of really helping women with hair loss regain their dignity meant a lot to me.
“I realised here was a way to put my beauty training to good use and, although I wasn’t a hairdresser, back in the UK I had worked closely with stylists.”
Setting up Magnolia Wigs, to complement the beauty studio, Ann says she felt completely comfortable with the clients and says it was something she should have done a long time before.
“I was aware just how debilitating hair loss could be for women especially for those undergoing severe treatments for an illness which was also placing them under huge stress.
“Although I realised that wearing a wig or a soft turban was an excellent solution, I also realised many wigs were poor quality, illfitting and uncomfortable. I made it my mission to source only the best quality, synthetic wigs which are easy care and look just like human hair.
“They come in a wide variety of styles and shades and, if one isn’t a match, I can usually have a wig customised to suit. Importantly, the ‘cap,’ which sits against the scalp,

Hair loss is not something most women think about until it happens to them. Regardless of the cause, in most cases, those who have lost their hair look for a wig to ‘cover up’. Pakuranga’s Ann Sheekey told HELEN PERRY how she came to be a wig specialist working mostly with women whose hair loss had robbed them of confidence and dignity.
should be well shaped and soft.”
Ann also provides fabric ‘softees’, similar to turbans, which can be a fashion accessory or just a comfy alternative to wearing a wig.
“Some softees, even come with a fringe which makes it look as if the wearer has hair underneath,” she says. “I stock magnetic eyelashes too, for those who lose lashes.”
While chatting with this sympathetic professional, client Michelle arrives at the studio and is happy to chat about her condition.
“I suffer from alopecia which leaves me with bald patches,” she explains. “The little hair I have is very fine and thin. “Hair is everything. When you have no hair, you lose confidence. People look at you awkwardly; it can be upsetting and embarrassing.”
“Fortunately, Ann has been able to help by recommending a wig as wearing a ‘topper’, which clips into existing hair, wouldn’t be suitable for me as my hair is too fine.”
Ann adds: “Undoubtedly, dealing with major hair loss can be extremely distressing, and when clients first come to me, they are naturally nervous – I always have tissues on hand. However, it is wonderful when I fit a wig which suits. Usually there’s great excitement but mostly there is relief and pleasure that they can go out in public confidently.”

However, thankfully medical moisturising cream ALHYDRAN has been formulated to significantly reduce the formation/ symptoms of major scarring particularly those associated with burns, surgery and post-pregnancy. Supported by science this after care cream can reduce the appearance of old scars, reduce itchiness from dry skin and reduce painful, red, tight skin. WHAT ARE THE MOST ADVANCED NATURAL CANCER CLINICS IN THE WORLD DOING?
Well, it is strange that you should ask the above because we just had a client return from a prestigious German cancer clinic after undergoing an intensive four-week, $40,000, natural therapies course to beat her cancer. I couldn’t wait to see her after she returned.
It has been more than a year since I met with Dr Weber from that clinic so, I was hungry for what they were doing….NOW. I was disappointed in the answer.
“They are doing pretty much what you’re doing here: hyperbaric oxygen, hyperthermia, pulsed electromagnetic therapy, low level laser therapy, ozone therapy, hydrogen therapy, repurpose drugs, specific nutrients, cancer specific therapy, diet therapy, lifestyle therapy, etc.”
I was hoping for some new developments. I was with Dr Weber a year ago, stealing his material with his blessing. Like so many great cancer practitioners he gave willingly of his knowledge.
One in two people will develop cancer. So, what does that look like. Well, you are busy making your way in the world, and then you get a niggle. You finally go and get the niggle checked out and OMG, you have the big C. “Why Me?”, “How can this be?”, “This is not who I am”, “What about……..”. Yet it is.
Everyone who gets cancer is a hub in a wheel. If the hub falls apart, so does the wheel.
So, where to from there. You have to decide. This is the most important decision you will make. Conventional, natural, both? Something has caused your cancer.
Chemo/radiation/surgery will deal with the end result, but what about the causes. That’s where natural medicine comes into its own. It deals with causal factors which can continue fuelling cancer and driving reoccurrences.
Medical studies are so clear. Natural therapies can enhance conventional treatment results and reduce side effects significantly.
Whichever path you choose make sure you do your own research. Make an informed decision.
Even better, what about prevention? Check whether you have key imbalances known to cause cancer and fix them before you fall off a cliff.

SLOWING AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and the subsequent (AREDS2) were two major clinical trials conducted by the National Eye Institute in the USA. KRISTINE JENSEN, Eyes of Howick owner-optometrist talks about how the study has identified a specific formula of antioxidants shown to be effective in slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (MD).
To date, these are the only studies for which there is good, long-term evidence for the effects of high dose nutrients for people who are diagnosed with MD.
The Age Related Eye Disease Study showed that taking the AREDS formula every day significantly reduced the relative risk of progression of MD and delayed visual loss. The results in a nutshell: • Those with intermediate stage
MD reduced their risk by approximately 25%. • Those with late stage MD in one eye reduced their risk by approximately 20%. • Beta-carotene and omega 3 supplements showed no effect in reducing MD risk • Lutein and Zeaxanthin intake has a clear link with reduced
MD risk
Based on these results we at Eyes of Howick recommend the AREDS2 formula to our patients with intermediate or late stage MD.
AREDS2 FORMULA • Vitamin C 500mg • Vitamin E 400 iu • Lutein 10mg • Zeaxanthin 2mg • Zinc 80mg • Copper 2mg
While there are several brands of supplements available which align with the AREDS2 formula, it is important to note that a supplement is not a cure for MD, nor does it stop or reverse damage caused by MD. It is important to read the label to understand how many tablets need to be taken to match the AREDS formula.
One of the key differences between the AREDS and AREDS2 formula is the omission of beta-carotene from the latter study due to concerns about it increasing the risk of cancer in smokers.
People who smoke, or have smoked, or who have asbestosis, should not take a supplement that contains beta-carotene. Furthermore, if beta-carotene and lutein is taken concurrently, the absorption of lutein is lowered.
While the AREDS2 study found no link between supplementary Omega 3 fatty acids and reduced risk of MD, it is still advised to eat fish 2-3 times per week. It should be noted that there are other benefits of taking an Omega 3 supplement if your fish intake is low such as to help with dry eye and reduce risk of glaucoma.
For those patients who have a risk factor for MD, such as family history, over 50 years of age, early macula changes or if their diet is poor in dark green leafy vegetables, a daily lutein supplement of 6-10mg is appropriate.

THE BOX:
When it comes to his cabinets in particular, French furniture designer, Erwan Boulloud, is not afraid to colour outside the lines; way, way, way outside!
Testament to the fact that furniture design need not be purely fixated on functionality, but can be an inspiring and inspired art form as well, Monsieur Boulloud’s cabinets open our minds as much as making for an eye-opening experience. Although these pieces (and others from this range) are not available in New Zealand stores, readers keen to purchase any of his work should contact the company (via erwanboulloud.com) to discuss orders and shipping.
