on the cover

Starry-eyed over babY My, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun – and I have had lots of fun this past month. In fact it’s been one long birthday celebration; first son, then a few days later my man and our grandson on the same day, followed by nephew and several friends too. And of course, now the new Royal, Will and Kate’s baby son, George, is a Cancerian too, born on my nephew’s birthday!

Beautiful Paihia Beach Resort and Spa couldn’t be closer to the water – it enjoys an idyllic beachfront location which drinks in stunning views of the bay. Sun-drenched patio, pool and heated jacuzzis mean an escape here, anytime of the year, is a relaxing experience made all the more enjoyable by enticing spa treatments, poolside restaurant and spacious apartment/style rooms with many luxuries. See story page 21. Cover photo supplied

I’m not an ardent royalist but I was moved on seeing that new bundle of joy and the pleasure on his parents’ faces. And despite all the kerfuffle about lighting up our national monuments, I just loved the sight of the Sky Tower, The Cloud and the Auckland War Memorial Museum lit up in bright blue lights against a black sky. Being surrounded by Cancerians (my late Dad also fell under the same star sign) it’s all a bit of fun for me although it is said that love matches between Cancerians and

Virgos (that’s me) are supposed to have staying power – ours certainly has. So many years that the young one’s in the office just laugh – most weren’t born when we married! But now that this momentous month is over for another year, it’s time to look ahead to the rest of 2013. Traditionally August can be a bit grim weather-wise so I hope some readers are off to holiday in the sun. I have to wait until September before escaping to Fiji but recently I was up at Paihia Beach Resort for a couple of nights and, honestly, it was so hot sitting outside on the deck chairs I had to go in… and have a cocktail to cool off!

This month’s EastLife is once again packed with reading with a good bit aimed at our male readers as we head towards Father’s Day. On the competitions page smooth operators will appreciate the fantastic Philips shave pack we have up for grabs and do read Jon Rawlinson’s take on ‘manscaping’ page 31. We’ve also found our local lads are men of many means and talents – circus performer, rugby player, artist, actor/director, landscape designer and more. So, don’t just chill, brew a cuppa and take time out to enjoy EastLife; catch you next month.

I struck perfect weather and the resort was ideal for a short break – stunning views, hot Jacuzzis, luxurious spa and, of course, great food – if overseas travel is out, I can’t think of a better place than the Bay of Islands for an escape. You can read about my trip on page 21.

10 TEN

Ten questions in ten minutes with

Waka Nathan

Backing ‘Black’ is almost a religion to sports fans in our stadium of four million, and if that’s the case, former All Black, NZ Maori selector and coach, and all-round gent, Waka Nathan, certainly deserves his place in the Parthenon. However, many locals may be unaware that this giant of the oval ball code is also a longtime Howick resident and keen fan of Pakuranga rugby. Which rugby player most influenced you and how? Colin Meads for his ability to read the game and tight or loose forward play if need be. Which current All Black most closely mirrors you in terms of style of play? Hard question to answer in terms of players today as the game has changed dramatically. But, in general, I would say Michael Jones most closely reflected my style of play. What do you think of Pakuranga’s own All Black, Charles Piutau and do you think he could be an All Black great? He’s had great achievement for Pakuranga. There’s every possibility he will become a great All Black, with the right direction. Do you support Pakuranga? If not, who do you support and why? Yes, I do support Pakuranga, because I coached there and its commitment to Auckland rugby and junior rugby is outstanding. Which Super Rugby team do you support and why? The Blues because I have played, coached and been a part of the Auckland Rugby Union throughout my life. What would you do to improve the development of the game at grassroots level? I would make sure the kids took ownership of playing for the club they choose, and that they understood the

6 | eastlife | august 2013

importance of loyalty and playing as a team, rather than as individuals. Speaking as a former flanker yourself, who should succeed Ritchie McCaw? Does Sam Cane have what it takes, or is another player more worthy of the job? Ritchie’s are very big shoes to fill. I’m sure whoever is chosen will bring their own personality and qualities of play to the game. Do you think today’s players are playing too many games? And if

so, could such overworked players lead to a poorer quality game for the fans? In my time we weren’t professional rugby players, whereas today’s players are. With only rugby to focus on, I believe they can handle the amount of games as long as they enjoy it and know when to retire on top. What is the first thing you would do if you became All Black coach? Make sure my players were bonding as a team and that the right

leadership strategies were in place. If you could invite three rugby players to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask? Sir Colin Meads [All Blacks 1957-71], the late Sir Wilson Whineray [All Blacks 1957-65, 30 tests as captain] and the late Patrick Walsh [All Blacks 1955-64, New Zealand Maori,1955-61, All Black selector 1969-71], because these three men weren’t just team players of my generation but also they were some of my very best mates on and off the field. www.eastlife.co.nz

Held at The Lounge, in Wellington Street, and hosted by owner Chris Bull, the function was a resounding success – Howick photographer, CARMEN BIRD was there too.

Sea changes –art, ahoy! Much of his life has been spent at sea, by the sea, or near the sea but there’s no rough seaman’s swagger about Paul Deacon. NATALIE BRITTAN speaks to the leading marine artist in his Cockle Bay home about his unusual life and works. Rare is the person who fits no stereotype. And although artists often bear the brunt of stereotypes, Paul is neither tortured nor eccentric. One of nine children born in Dartmouth, a fishing town in Devon, England, Paul caught the art bug from a young age. His fisherman father, who passed away when Paul was three years old, was a competent artist. His mother, on the other hand, was a trained artist and it was from her that Paul learnt all the “tricks of the trade”. Surrounded by water, it was only natural that his works reflected his environment. Later, leaving Devon for Irish fortune, the Deacons again chose life by the coast and young Paul’s artistic flair gained momentum. But Ireland was not home for long. Amid growing unrest near the Irish borders in the ‘70s, the family returned to Devon whereby Paul soon set sail around the world with the merchant navy. Travelling to places such as northern Europe, west coast Africa and the Mediterranean, the young sailor built a knowledge of all things nautical. Starting at the bottom, he climbed up

the decks and was eventually made relief captain – not always easy, he admits. “I hated the weather, unless it was sunshine. There were few moments when I seriously thought ‘this is the end’!” Meanwhile, the artist’s brush kept going and Paul was often commissioned to paint ships leaving and entering the ports. “Beer money!” he chuckles. Surprisingly, it wasn’t seafarers who were his biggest customers, but the average tourist strolling on the quay. “Boat people don’t spend a lot of money on paintings!” In the meantime, the gentle Englishman met and married his wife, Jill, and together they had a son and daughter, which soon brought his 10-year seafaring chapter to a close. Returning to land, a job as a prison officer at the infamous Dartmoor Prison opened his eyes to another world. “I needed a shore-side job and the service happened to be recruiting.” Historically home to Britain’s most notorious prisoners, the prison had its challenges. “It was known as Britain’s worst prison; the dustbin!”

It was also “desperately boring!” So, Paul sought refuge in art and the idea of an arts and crafts workshop for prisoners resulted. “A lot of it was abstract – wildness, misery, fighting, killing, death, violence. But there was also a lot of good stuff too – landscapes, seascapes, portraits of families, and

memories of when they were free.” These works were exhibited and sold; a small percentage of sales going back to the prisoners but most being donated to charity. “We were a bit worried when we took them out to exhibit their work; some of them were lifers. But there were never any problems.”

Precision through experience.

Nick’s knack for circus eastlife | profile

He may be one of New Zealand’s best and brightest, but circus extraordinaire Nick Steward is anything but a show pony. NATALIE BRITTAN shines the spotlight on the Howick born and raised talent who actually ran away and joined the circus.

While fellow performers have tripped and fumbled on stage, Nick Steward says he’s more likely to fall on his way to the theatre. “I tend to injure myself more when I’m making my way to the stage than actually performing,” says the 24-year-old who was one of 20 finalists at the inaugural Golden Carnie Awards, New Zealand’s first national circus championship held at the Wellington Opera House earlier this year.

And, as if to prove his point, it seems Nick kept an 800-strong crowd spellbound as he performed a routine that won him third place. His proud parents and friends watched with bated breath, as the country’s elite juggled, swooped and twisted with fearless intensity, showcasing acts they had spent days, months and years perfecting. And the competition did not get the better of the self-titled, “Nick of all Trades” as he pulled out all stops with the cyr wheel, a large metal hoop which he spun and manipulated with nimble dexterity. Producing a mesmerising and near flawless show, Nick won his third place in the competitive Ground Based Award category. The athletic acrobat says the competition, better known as the Golden Carnies, was a great experience and one that should continue. “It was a tough contest and a New Zealand first. It’s nice to have a nationwide competition to pick out the top of the top performers.” Born to parents David and Allyson Steward in Bucklands Beach, Nick always had an inexplicable interest in magic. “He would have been about three when he first showed an interest,” says Allyson. “He was always fascinated with making things disappear.”

14 | eastlife | august 2013

Naturally, his parents were intrigued. “We thought it was interesting,” says David, an electronics engineer. “Then it got to the stage where he would do things we didn’t understand.” Like a true magician, when pressed for answers, Nick glibly says “smoke and mirrors”. He continued to foster his interest, in magic and other physical routines, which sometimes worried his nursing trained mum. But the now Shelly Park couple say they never stopped their son’s exploits. “We just allowed it to happen. We’re very supportive of everything he does. We allowed him to do what other people might think of as weird.” Easily bored, the former Howick College student was not concerned with academic pursuits. “I didn’t like school. I was six weeks into Year 13 and I already had enough credits to finish the whole year.” After school, plans to study outdoor education switched to an electrical apprenticeship. Unfortunately, he hated it. “I can’t do the same thing every day. This is not for me,” he says. In spite of that, he took the bit between his teeth and finished the course – a distinctive trait of Nick’s,

says Allyson. “He doesn’t give up. He’ll finish it right through to the end.” Determination, tenacity, perfectionism and patience are his traits says dad, David – “he’ll decide to do something and he’ll just work and work at it until he gets it right.” Today, this is evident in Nick’s broad repertoire which includes juggling, comedy magic – serious magic was too “boring” – sword swallowing, flying trapeze, unicycling, fire spinning, pole, and balancing on various objects. He says the frustration of not being able to master a skill is not an obstacle. “It’s a motivation. I don’t like failing and not being able to do it properly.” At 18, Nick became New Zealand’s youngest sword swallower, and has also set a world record for sword swallowing whilst balancing on a rolla bolla (a board balanced on a ball or several). He showcased this terrifying act on New Zealand’s Got Talent in 2008. The unofficial world record for mounting a 2.5m high giraffe unicycle completely unassisted also belongs to him. But above all, his greatest

We’re proud of all that Nick’s done and are just pleased that he’s doing what he wants to do – that he’s achieving his own dreams.”

achievement is “reaching my 24th birthday”, he says. “In one piece!” adds mum. Outside the circus ring, Nick is also a qualified barista, bartender and croupier but his heart still belongs to carnival bright lights. Having travelled as part of Circus Aotearoa (successor of the Whirling Brothers Circus) he has set sights on the world famous Cirque du Soleil. “I’d like to keep performing for a little while, at least get to the top of this field before I change and go to Cirque du Soleil,” says Nick. In the meantime, the itinerant circus artist has just left for the Big Apple in America to teach children at French Woods, a performing arts summer camp and part of the Camp Counselors USA programme. This is his fourth time and he often stays for six to eight months at a time. His parents say it’s been a wonderful journey. “We’re proud of all that Nick’s done and are just pleased that he’s doing what he wants to do – that he’s achieving his own dreams.” www.nickofalltrades.co.nz www.eastlife.co.nz

His stories and performances on stage have entertained and captivated our east Auckland audiences for more than four decades but little is known about Laurie Mills, the creative mind behind Howick Little Theatre’s latest stage production, The Cat’s Meow. NATALIE BRITTAN takes a snapshot of the man sitting in the director’s chair.

It was purely by chance that Laurie fell into the part of Tiny Tim from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the age of eight. “It was good fortune in a way – well, my good fortune,” says the Pakuranga resident. “A very good friend of mine, Keith, was supposed to play the role but he had to go into hospital three weeks before the play. “So, his mother said to me would you like to do it, and I said ‘yes!’ I’ve been doing theatre work ever since.” Born and raised in Wellington, Laurie made the move to Auckland’s eastern suburbs more than 40 years ago after returning from his big OE in the United Kingdom. Securing a job with Air New Zealand looking after its phone reservations desk, Laurie stayed with the company trying his hand at a diverse range of jobs, finally ending up in his current position as IT manager. But more prolific than Laurie’s career has been his dedication to theatre.

To date, the Howick Little Theatre life member and former president has played a part in more than 70 stage shows, 31 of which he has been responsible for as director. Many will remember Laurie’s portrayal of the cunning Fagin in Oliver! and the eccentric Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as well as his direction of shows such as The Glass Menagerie and The Chalk Garden among others. “As an actor, I love comedy,” says Laurie. “I like making people laugh” – something he does exceptionally well, judging from the non-stop laughter that poured from the audience of On The Razzle and many more. Directing, on the other hand, is a more serious affair. “It’s a lot easier being an actor. You’re only responsible for what you’re doing,” says the patron of the Howick Children’s & Youth Theatre. His niche is directing plays set in the past. “I revel in the past. I love it because there’s so much inspiration from researching the period, its costume, manners and the way people relate to one another.” While he admits the demands are great, he says it’s the next act that motivates him. “There’s always new plays to make. There’ll always be authors writing plays set in the past. And as long as I have the energy, I’ll keep going.” In fact, he says it’s not surprising his theatrical pursuits have lasted all these years. “I think I have quite a gregarious nature; theatre work is very much about communication. “If you have a love of people, a love of the period and reproducing things, then theatre is a natural outcome.”

Win! art fair tickets A select group of leading New Zealand and Australian galleries will present works by some of the region’s most sought-after artists at this year’s Auckland Art Fair, August 7 to August 11 at The Cloud. The biennial fair attracts some 10,000 visitors and this year EastLife has 3 double passes to give away (see below). Highlights of this year’s event include a gala Vernissage for 900 guests and keynote lecture by one of the world’s leading art commentators. Sandra Phillips, curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, has curated and collaborated on critically acclaimed exhibitions by some of the world’s leading photographers. At the fair she will provide an insight into some of the images on display and discuss the way photography is associated with voyeurism and surveillance at her keynote lecture. Syndication – the modern way Ever dreamt of owning a race horse but thought it beyond your pocket? Whether it is harness racing or the ‘gallops’, syndication, or shared ownership, is fast becoming the most popular means for people to race horses. In the harness racing code (pacing and trotting), the most successful in this area has been The Auckland Trotting Club syndicates. In fact, the syndication of yearling pacers over 15 years has been called, “the most successful horse racing syndication programme in the world. With 31 winners from 36 horses to the races (harness race horses), The Auckland Trotting Club has, in that 15 years, formed 14 syndicates each comprising either 40 or 50 shares and each racing two, three or four horses.

You, too, could part-own a trotter or pacer.

These horses were all bought by the respective, selected, prominent trainers at the yearling sales and have

forward in harness racing • Awesome Armbro (19 wins, $648,754) • Changeover (29 wins, $2,426,765 – winner of $1.2m 2008 NZ Cup, named NZ Three Year Old & Five Year Old of the Year and then sold to stand at stud) • Tintin In America (16 wins, $934,305, including five Group 1 wins, the NZ Sires Stakes Two Year Old Final, the Three & Four Year Old Harness Jewels, the Australasian Breeders’ Crown Three Year Old C&G Final and the NZ Messenger Championship, setting an incredible five NZ records) Once the last horse in each syndicate is sold they are disbanded but currently, there are three ATC syndicates in existence. By being part of a syndicate, members enjoy the thrill of owning and racing harness racehorses and of being very involved in harness racing, initially at Alexandra Park but also the wider Auckland/Waikato area. They may even venture further afield in New Zealand and Australia. Advantages of being part of a larger syndicate include the comparatively low costs; a chance to share in the ownership of well bred horses trained by some of the best trainers in New Zealand; making new friendships with like-minded people; total involvement in the harness racing industry and a chance to participate in social events and travel. This year the Auckland Trotting Club has again followed its successful formula by purchasing three richly bred yearlings for syndication,

selected by top trainers Tony Herlihy, Barry Purdon, and Geoff Small. The share price of $1,964.04 provides a 1/50 share in the ownership of the three yearlings and the monthly fee of only $160.00 (less than $37/week) per share, covers all costs. Also, this year, the North Island Standardbred Breeders’ Association has launched a new initiative in racehorse syndication. Through The Auckland Trotting Club as an authorised syndicator, the association is forming a syndicate to allow people to race two well-bred fillies with members of the Chiefs Super Rugby team. You can join Liam Messam, Aaron Cruden, Brodie Retallick, Bundee Aki, Nick Crosswell, Michael Kainga, Lelia Masaga, Solomona Sakalia and Asaesli Tikoirotuma in racing these fillies. After this year’s Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka, the NISBA were successful in arranging to lease the fillies from their respective breeders. These fillies did not reach their reserves of $30,000 each but their

respective breeders, while wishing to retain the fillies for future breeding, have agreed to lease both without a right of purchase to the NISBA Breeders No.1 Syndicate. Hence, there is an opportunity to race the fillies which were selected by the current two leading North Island trainers Steven Reid and Geoff Small. They are Unforgiving (Art Major – Pure Envy) and Everlasting Grace (Bettor’s Delight – Jessie Grace). As there is no right of purchase in the lease of the fillies, there is no purchase price to buy into this syndicate, just a monthly payment of $147.50 (approx. $34/week) per month. This will cover a 1/40 share in the racing lease of the two yearlings and all the training and associated ongoing costs. Also included with each share is one annual subscription to the NZ Standardbred Breeders’ Association for the life of the syndicate. Involvement in either of these syndicates will provide many hours of fun and entertainment, so if you wish to join or obtain further information, please contact the manager, Rob Carr phone (09) 291-9034 or mobile: (021) 227-6444; email: rob.carr@xtra.co.nz.

Local students voice ideas for While mayor Len Brown is busy making plans for Auckland to become the world’s most liveable city, denser living seems set to become a major issue, as final-year Bachelor of Planning student from Auckland University, Ying Liu, explained to JON RAWLINSON.

Former Macleans College student Ying Liu from Bucklands Beach believes urban sprawl is a primary issue Auckland needs to address.

faced crucial challenges in the 21st century: social inequality, economic challenges, climate change and healthy living,” Ying says.

Looking at the draft Unitary Plan, she says it is uncertain how Auckland will develop until submissions have been taken into account and the final plan presented at the end of this year.

“Also the Auckland Plan and draft Unitary Plan 2013 had identified it as a key area for change. Because Mangere is close to the airport and future railway, it is the international gateway into Auckland and an area of untapped potential.”

“Personally, I believe denser living is inevitable, especially around key centres. As population increases, Auckland cannot continue to sprawl and opening up more green field sites is not the best solution,” Ying says. “Denser living is inevitable but it’s not as scary as some perceive. It doesn’t mean more eight or 10 storey apartment buildings, rather more three or four level developments.” Ying says it’s important to create denser communities with a purpose, ensuring they are interactive and user-friendly not just beautiful places. “They need to be functional for the community, which ultimately means communication. We need to speak to people to understand their needs.” Along with fellow Auckland University student, Yuqing Zhou, Ying recently won a prize at the International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP) Congress in London. The pair’s Cities for Tomorrow competition entry, which reinterpreted Garden City principles for the challenges of the 21st Century, was based on retrofitting the suburb of Mangere. “We chose Mangere as it was a typical Auckland suburb that

Following research and a site visit, the pair set about addressing the community’s current and future needs. They focused on designing the town centre and one of its neighbourhoods, addressing issues in an integrated way. “We worked towards multifunctional designs, such as a communityowned sound barrier along the motorway, made with a solar panel which would also collect rainwater.

“We believe that sustainable development needs to be achieved with balanced environmental, social and economic outcomes,” says Ying, who adds acknowledgement of New Zealand’s native biodiversity impressed judges. “One of our primary themes was ensuring native birds and lizards, for example, could also call Mangere their home. Yuqing and I made a video using the theme of what native New Zealand birds would see and feel if they were to return to Mangere once it had been enlivened by our plan. It was really fun and accessible enough so everyone could

understand our intentions.” Ying says should the plan be implemented, benefits would be felt throughout Auckland. “The community would become better connected, resilient to climate change, and have a stronger, greener and healthier centre. And, once any community becomes stronger it influences the positive development of other communities and suburbs.” After the girls collected their prize

Yuqing Zhou and Ying Liu. at the IFHP Congress in London, Ying decided to take the long road home, travelling through the USA and gathering ideas along the way. Yet, she says urban planning is not a case of one size fits all. “I think every city and town has something new and interesting to offer. But the key for Auckland is not just to take ideas of good urban planning from overseas, but to use them in a way that works specifically for the city.” She says calls for denser living in Auckland may have merit, but the right execution is essential. “I believe it needs to happen in Auckland, but must be integrated properly.”

LIFESTYLE Luxury resort impresses I’m not sure what you call a romantic getaway when your ‘partner’ is the sister-in-law – romp-antic getaway perhaps? Well, actually, that’s close to the truth. When sister-in-law and I make tracks for some gorgeous corner of New Zealand, part of the package is good food, a few wines, shopping, sightseeing and loads of laughs.

A recent escape to Paihia Beach resort and Spa was supposed to be about candlelit dinners and playing footsies in the spa bath with the man in her life. Instead HeLeN PerrY left her husband behind at work and set out on a girls’ weekend.

This particular weekend also included basking in the sunshine overlooking a sparkling blue bay, creamy cocktails, a luxurious, hour-long massage and being absolutely humbled by the towering omahutu Kauri Sanctuary near Kerikeri. Those magnificent gods of the forest left us dumbstruck (and that’s saying something). While I was genuinely regretful the husband could not be part of this weekend (wink, wink, nod, nod), Paihia Beach resort proved it wasn’t just for couples. The revitalising environment worked perfectly for we two hard-working women, awakening our senses to a different way of life. from our luxurious and very spacious room with lounge facilities, lavish spa bath, kitchenette and many niceties such as robes and slippers, to the 20-metre salt water pool plus five heated Jacuzzis right outside our door, we wanted for nothing. A stunning sea view and, on this occasion, clear skies and warm

sunshine, set the mood for enjoyment during our two-night stay. It included dining exceedingly well at poolside restaurant Pure Tastes, and also an hour-long massage at the resort’s La Spa Naturale, which was divine. What’s more, I again realised it’s a small world – the two massage therapists grew up in Pakuranga just a few streets from home and knew my husband’s cousins in years gone by. Who would have believed it? While it is easy to proclaim the many attributes of this stylish resort it was the service and the people who delivered it that was so impressive. Hands-on owner Helen Arnesen

showed in every way that nothing was too much trouble. front of house manager rachel was welcoming and had answers to all our questions. from the dining staff to the bar manager we were waited on like royalty and the cocktails, strike me dead, had a real splash of alcohol to jolly them up. We enjoyed one dinner and two breakfasts at the resort, the latter being outstanding. I do like a menu over a buffet in the morning and this one included Pure Tastes own take on many favourites. oh, how I enjoyed fresh, pan fried fish. A visit to Paihia also means a ferry ride to russell, a dig around local

shops – smiling retailers everywhere – and ocean fruits. At only Seafood, the scallop entree couldn’t be faulted. By time Sunday rattled around I was reluctant to leave especially as the sun was still shining and people were lining up for speed boat racing in the bay – there was no need to persuade me further that the northern life can light up one’s very existence. A winner of various tourism awards, Pahia Beach resort was, indeed, a romantic getaway and while our trip was more ‘getaway’ than ‘romance’ we so enjoyed the opportunity to gossip a little, flirt a little, and luxuriate a lot. I’d like to repeat it.

Supping on South Australia eastlife | escape

South Australia Tourism has done a great job promoting Adelaide to New Zealanders; so good that HeLeN PerrY was quick to book an autumn holiday to that part of the world heading first to the Barossa valley. It is so easy to make one’s way from Adelaide to the Barossa valley. We picked up a car from the airport and within 30 minutes we were heading for the Novotel Hotel at rowland flat in the heart of this great wineproducing region.

into the industry’s history. At the other end of the scale, the glass and steel construction of the Jacobs Creek visitor Centre was a salute to contemporary design.

While we saw many lovely forms of accommodation from quaint cottages to gracious homesteads and grand manors, we couldn’t have chosen a more scenic spot. Novotel Barossa had a rural outlook, was attractively appointed with a relaxing pool area and elegant restaurant.

The Barossa townships of Tanunda, Bethany, Angaston and Nurioopta are all charming while in the nearby Adelaide Hills area, picturesque Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest German township, settled in 1839 by Lutheran refugees, attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The exceptional service included young wait staff who showed impressive knowledge of the menu and wines. Complimentary wine tasting each evening was an added treat.

Hahndorf’s quaint buildings and emphasis on genuine German wares and food is well known. This German influence can be seen in many other parts (including the vineyards) and also in the churches – there are beautiful Lutheran churches at every South There are beautiful Lutheran Australian turn; well churches at every South Australian preserved and cared for.

Wineries galore There is just so much tasting one can do in a day especially when driving. We stuck to three daily venues and among those visited were Kies family Wines, McGuigan’s at Chateau Yaldara, Jacob’s Creek, Yalumba, Kellermeister, Peter Lehmann’s and Langmeil Winery. each did their part to totally win my vote for shiraz (syrah) from the Barossa, now my preferred Australian red! from Kellermeister I also bought two bottles of Sable, a decadent chocolate liqueur with a ruby port base and hint of cinnamon – a smooth after-dinner treat in winter. While the wineries wooed us, the Barossa’s charm also lay in its buildings – seeing the many chateau-style properties one could be forgiven for asking is this the Barossa or is it france? Imposing architecture at the McGuigan and Yalumba wineries was breath-taking while at Langmeil, historic stone buildings gave insights

Wherever we went we marvelled at the heritage conservation and restoration of historic buildings and homes.

maggie beer’s Farm shoP Minutes from Nurioopta is the property owned by celebrated Australian chef Maggie Beer and husband Colin. The Maggie Beer farm Shop is a cavalcade of Maggie’s pantry products but in the 1970s the couple started by farming and selling pheasants then opened the Pheasant farm restaurant in 1973. The restaurant closed in 1993 so Maggie could develop her own product range, now a thriving business. However, in 1999, the original premises re-opened as Maggie Beer’s farm Shop where this clever chef and cookbook author has her marketing right.

Sampling spoons next to virtually every product encourage tasting and once tasted it is easy to pop a jar of this or a pottle of that into one’s shopping basket. Mine was laden when I left.

viCTor harbor anD surrounDs our Barossa stay was followed by five days in Adelaide including a bus tour along the coast to gorgeous townships such as Goolwa, Port elliot and victor Harbor (pictured below). These pretty villages and stunning scenery are a ‘must do’ trip for newbies to South Australia. I’d have happily stayed in this area with its lovely outlooks, beaches, interesting cafes, and tourist attractions. one colloquialism appealed to

my sense of humour – the driver’s reference to seaside ‘shacks’. Not baches, or cribs but shacks – holiday escapes for townies; except these shacks (like many coastal homes in New Zealand) were often palatial. Yes, I’d like a shack just like one of those, a sumptuous base for exploring the region!

lunCh on The ProuD mary We couldn’t do Adelaide without a glimpse of the Murray river so another tour took us to Murray Bridge where we boarded boutique cruising vessel, the Proud Mary for a short luncheon cruise. We spent the first half hour up top where a soft breeze took some of the heat out of 41 degree temperatures and allowed us to enjoy this tranquil mode of travel. Lunch – a simple yet tasty buffet – was served on the return journey. The old world dining room providing a sense of bygone years and a yearning for more.

Club members shoot for the stars!

Howick Camera Club members have had plenty of exposure this year, their work placing at a wide variety of competitions. Today EastLife features images by members which have, in the past months, won accolades here and abroad.

A ‘high resolution’ group of amateur and experienced photographers who share a common interest and passion for photography, Howick Camera Club was formed in 1957 and is now one of the largest clubs in New Zealand. Members meet three times a month in the basement of the Howick Bridge Club on the first, third and fourth Monday evening, their aim to inspire, share and teach a love of photography in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Award winning artists do the club proud. From top Go Away!!!!!!! by B McCree; Kevin by C Tyler; Dad & The Kids by MA Lenny and Orchid Light by D Walker. Inset; Lily Licked by L Robertson.

Members are encouraged to work their way through the club’s grading system via monthly in-house print and digital competitions. Critique evenings, field trips, including an annual Snow Trip to National Park, hands-on workshops and guest

speakers are all regular events. And, most importantly, there are ample opportunities to enter national and international competitions. www.howickcameraclub.org.nz

Hallmark of art and jazz He’s spent nearly a lifetime designing fabric, but Peter Hall has managed to weave a few jazz notes into life’s rich tapestry. Curious to see how this unusual combination works, NATALIE BRITTAN unravels the threads of the Howick artist’s story.

Peter Hall’s home could easily be mistaken for an art gallery. A montage of paintings, the walls – and sometimes, floors – are well utilised. Just when it seems there couldn’t possibly be any more, an art-filled hallway leads to a small room which is an explosion of vivid colours and shapes. This is the eclectic artist’s studio – the place where the Mellons Bay local cranks up the music and paints to his heart’s content. Drawers are stacked from floor to ceiling, filled with CDs numbering in the hundreds. The use of music is dependent on the subject Peter paints. This may vary dramatically from landscapes to geometric shapes and patterns. The background music will usually feature famous jazz musicians such as Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan. Each work of art has its own soundtrack, something the selfconfessed “jazz fanatic instantly recalls when he looks at a painting. “The music puts me in the mood. It’s a love for music and art combined – it creates such emotion. Peter says it keeps him sane. “When concentrating, you are bombarded in the brain and the mind becomes a jumble of noise. The music shuts all that out. It’s white sound, it takes away the turmoil. Born in London during the Second World War, Peter remembers the bombings – The Blitz.

Despite chaos, there was opportunity to appreciate the beauty of life. “My mother was a florist and my father worked for Paramount Pictures – he put music to pictures. As a result, Peter started collecting old jazz records from a very young age and went on to be a top scholar at the prestigious Royal College of Arts in London, where he was strongly influenced by the pop art movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s. In the meantime, he indulged his love for jazz, playing drums in a band. He was also a founding member at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London. “I watched people like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington live and close up – it was amazing! says Peter.

‘

However, it was his artistic tendencies that became the bread and butter of his successful textile design career.

Peter PETER Hall HALL – A Jazzman’s JAzzMAN’S Love of LovE oF Landscape LANDSCAPE Peter will be exhibiting at the Monterey Art Gallery in Cook St from August 9-30 with opening night on August 8 at 6pm.

His trade took him around the globe, to Asia, the Middle East, USA and Africa, and his travels inspired his painting. But Peter was not alone on this journey. His wife and two sons lived with him in South Africa until the early ‘90s; by then, it was time to move on to greener pastures fearing political unrest.

The talented designer was offered a position at textile company Maurice Kain in Auckland and, together with his family, settled into an idyllic Whitford setting. “We were Queen Street farmers! he laughed. Although many of Peter’s works were largely inspired by his industrious career, his new rustic setting led to the creation of a series of bush paintings, which were well received.

Monterey Art Gallery owner and friend, Sandy Starr says the paintings were very real. “I could look at them and feel as if I was there. I was on a path being led right into the bush. And it is this style of neo-realism that Peter prides himself on. Today, he is a full-time painter, having retired eight years ago. “I’m a keeper of time, he says. “A keeper of time as a drummer, a keeper of time as a painter. You see a moment and you want to capture it. The world runs so fast, too quick, but as an artist I can capture it forever.

Style radar

Repertoire’s Style Director, MeGHAn MAHeR, tells eastLife about the one piece which women should absolutely have in their wardrobe this winter.

E510102

Q:

I would love some help with my dressing and wardrobe but am a little shy to seek professional advice. Is it just movie stars who have stylists?

A:

I notice quite a few of my styling clients feel nervous when they come to see me. We work with all shapes and sizes and whilst there is usually a charge to see a stylist always remember it is an investment. You will save by preventing spending on clothes that you never wear. At Repertoire we forfeit this cost against purchases made. I believe every woman should see a stylist at some stage in her life. It can

enhance your appearance and help you feel more confident. I find my clients a few simple pieces and accessories that will effortlessly update their wardrobe and create a new look for them, to suit their body shape and their lifestyle needs. As women, our body shape changes throughout our life for various reasons from childbirth to hormonal or postural changes. Ideally, we should see a stylist regularly to have our body shape re-analysed to dress for our current shape. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the glint in a client’s eyes when she sees how fabulous she looks!

Manscaping

Winter

ADVIce for FOR hair HAIR and AnD there THeRe advice Hair today is gone tomorrow for many men, particularly once they earn the pseudonym JOn ‘husband aka dad’ writes JON RAWLInSOn. RAWLINSON. Stress can cause hair to ‘migrate,’ cropping up where it’s not wanted, and is often difficult to manage where it stays. Fortunately, with the right products, men can ensure they’re in top ‘scape’ to face the day. Kids were invented to get up our nose, but hair doesn’t have to. Tweezers may be effective, but rather than ‘pluck’ up the courage to use these pincers, followed by shouting a certain word that rhymes with pluck, electric trimmers offer a much less painful alternative. It’s often said that older men don’t lose their hearing, they simply choose to stop listening. However, while a little extra ear hair can help keep the sound of children and spouses to a dull roar, it can be a nuisance when trying to comprehend football commentary. Thankfully, trimmers again come to the rescue. Just because there’s snow on the roof... I forget how the rest of that goes, but, then again, I don’t need to, because while my mind may be slipping, I’m still handsome enough to get away with it.

And even the folic-ly challenged can find solace in clippers; keep it close cropped and no one will know about the struggle to grow!

Whether to help us land a lady, or to keep her from throwing us back once she becomes wise to her folly, it’s never too soon to groom. Because, although we men probably have the right to moan, considering the guff we put the women through, we’re lucky, lucky fellows!

For male grooming, PhiliPs recommends: Philips aquaTouch – Thanks to • Philips AquaTouch its Aquatec seal, this electric shaver can provide either a comfortable dry shave or a refreshing wet shave. The dual blade system lifts hair to cut closer while rounded, low-friction protection heads adjust to the curves of the face, preventing skin damage. Thanks to its QuickRinse system, this shaver can be easily cleaned under the tap or used in the shower. nose, Ear ear and Eyebrow eyebrow • Philips Nose, Trimmer – With a powerful, precision micro-trimmer, this product provides fast and easy trimming and thanks to its Safeguard trimmer, pulling, nicks and cuts are easily avoided.

Finally, blokes who look like wild men from Borneo are not tops with the ladies and are sure to embarrass the kids. Yes, manscaping is here; we must ‘face’ facts that, these days, it’s all about the manicured mo and designer stubble.

• Philips Hair hair Clipper clipper –Offering an even haircut, this product features rounded blades to prevent scratching. It’s also lightweight and can be used cordless. Thanks to its adjustable comb, all hair lengths are achievable without changing combs during the cut.

While blades cut quick, just like Dylan, eventually we all have to go electric. And, thankfully, the latest electric razors are up to the task,

“I have heard that hearing aids can be expensive. Is this true? $( # Hearing aids, as with most things, have a wide variety of price as well as a variety in performance. Some hearing aids are better than others at enhancing sounds in restaurants or on the telephone, while others can instinctively respond to changes in the environment around you. Hearing aids are very tiny medical devices with very advanced sound processing, designed to mimic one of the human senses. They intuitively react to the world around us, reproducing and enhancing the sounds of speech while actively trying to turn down unwanted noises. And they have to do this instantly, with no delay between the natural sound and the enhanced sound. An average hearing aid can be doing this for 14 hours every day over 5-7 years. That’s between 25,00035,000 hours of hard work! To put this in perspective, a standard smartphone is only expected to perform at its best for 3,000-5,000 hours. If we spread out the cost of buying them over the number of hours they are working, an average hearing aid costs 11-16 cents an hour while a smartphone costs 37 cents! Because of the variety of costs and options that are out there, when you are thinking about getting hearing aids it is important to talk with an Audiologist. At Bay Audiology we work through an assessment of your hearing and listening needs with you, and can then recommend hearing aids which will provide the level of performance you need. They will also talk about the costs involved, and what subsidies and funding options you may be eligible for. Getting hearing aids is not like buying a TV or a new car. You are making a health decision, so we will give you all the information and support you need to make the best and most informed decision that you can If you would like to know more, Simply phone Bay Audiology Howick on 09 534 0944 to book a free initial appointment. AND you YOU Alcohol and GINNY MCARTHUR – Outlook for Life. Ginny is not only a nutritionalist and personal trainer but also a marathon runner and regular on Newstalk ZB.

Alcohol use has been headlines for some time with a strong link between women drinking and breast cancer hitting the news of late. Unfortunately, alcohol is the drug of choice for many of us. We use it for stress relief, to celebrate life’s milestones and to relax with loved ones, but is it harming us? Many of my clients are stunned to learn that: • Three standard drinks for a woman or four standard drinks for a man daily is considered heavy drinking. • The average bottle of wine is 7.5 standard drinks. • Alcohol kills brain cells, destroys your liver, can increase your blood pressure, and increase your risk of many cancers. Conversely alcohol in moderation is: • Heart protective • Can help prevent the build-up of plaque in the arteries • Can raise HDL (good cholesterol) and can lower LDL (bad cholesterol) • Is an anti-coagulant helping to prevent clotting that can lead to strokes. Red wine, in particular, is known for its heart protective properties. Research shows that the antioxidants in red and black grape skins are not only heart protective but can also protect against some cancers, and help to prevent macular degeneration. However, it is really easy to fall into the habit of drinking two to three glasses of wine a night. The large glasses we use means that two glasses may be half a bottle, which is over the safe limit for women. In terms of energy, this is the same as eating five to six slices of bread or 40 minutes hard work in the gym.

You may wonder when you eat well and exercise daily why you don’t lose weight. The answer may well be that you are working off the wine but that’s all. Staying off the booze all week then bingeing at the weekend is just as bad; every unit of alcohol takes an hour to clear your liver and compromises your ability to burn fat by as much as 30 %. One gram of alcohol contains nine calories – the same as fat. And that’s where all the calories come from, so low carb beer may not give you much of a saving; carbs are 4.5 cals per gram, the calories are with the alcohol. These are also empty calories that your body cannot use for anything other than fat storage. The new low alcohol wines on the market are generally 7-8% alcohol rather than the normal 12% so save you 25% calorie- wise. Low alcohol beers are also a better choice. A single measure of spirits with a low calorie mixer may also be a wise choice. Or have a really nice glass of red wine occasionally; moderation is the key. I write this during Dry July, which is a great cause and raised over $500,000 last year for adult cancer patients. My clients and I have done this for the last couple of years and we certainly feel good for it. Many of us have dropped a couple of kilos in the process! My advice if you are a drinker – a couple of glasses over the weekend then three to four alcohol-free days per week is probably a good idea. I also think red wine in moderation ... after Dry July finishes, of course. – www.outlookforlife.co.nz www.eastlife.co.nz

FOOD Game chef HunTs Down TroPHy Eastlife’s resident chef aJay ZaLTE recently proved himself to be both a ‘stag-geringly’ good chef and a fine shot too. The executive chef from novotel auckland international airport, was one of 10 top new Zealand chefs to compete in the ‘raukumara red wild Venison Challenge 2013’and he came home with the trophy. Hosted by neat meat, a partner of raukumara red wild Venison, the challenge has been ‘deer’ to Hawkes bay hearts since 2011 but for ajay it was a leap in the dark, or rather the raukumara ranges near Gisborne. There, he was up against the likes of sean Connolly, head chef at The Grill (skyCity Grand Hotel); richard ross, executive chef skyCity; mark southon, The Food store; nick Honeyman, The Commons and shaun Clouston, Logan brown. The team was flown down to Hawkes bay where each chef hunted deer from a helicopter and had to ensure a humane shot to the head. They then competed in an arena set up in the middle of the raukumara forest where they were required to choose a cut from their kill and cook it using at least four secret ingredients personally foraged from the forest and local surroundings.

The perfect setting for your next intimate party or business gathering. We welcome you to view at 186 Wellington St, Howick.

“i’d never handled a gun before and in the pre-event clay bird practice round i didn’t hit the target once,” ajay laughs. “but up in the helicopter i judged if i aimed in front of the only stag i saw, i might get lucky. and i did.” ajay not only got his shot dead right but his dish, ‘tamarillo-glazed venison with local grapefruit and sultana butter served with apple, parsnip, baby spinach confit and tamarillo jus’ came out the winner. “Looking for my secret ingredients was difficult. The weather was

terrible. in the helicopter it had been freezing; on the ground, produce such as watercress, was rainbattered and in poor condition. Late blackberries were dry and long past their best. Even the grapefruit was sour but with the sultanas and local honey, i managed to produce a sweet sour butter that was just right.” Three judges and 60 other local representatives thought so too resulting in ajay’s novel approach earning him 196 points out of 200 and the 2013 title. “i was absolutely delighted,” he says. “at no point did

i ever imagine i would do so well. it really was an amazing experience.” The Department of Conservation spends some $50 million a year as part of a sustainability drive to eradicate pests such as deer which are destroying the raukumara Forest. “not only does raukumara red assist in this but it supports the work done by the whinray Ecological Charitable Trust to increase brown kiwi numbers around Gisborne,” ajay says. “The company donates 50 cents to the Trust for every kilo of venison sold.”

Superfoods from the garden Tamara Rubanowski is a keen gardener, cook, and member of the New Zealand Guild of Food Writers. Her garden produces plenty of vegetables, fruit and herbs for the family.

When Rex and I bought our property in Farm Cove, we didn’t realise that the garden harboured a delicious surprise. An unsightly tree at the back of the section nearly ended up as firewood, but it suddenly burst into exquisite orange blossoms, revealing itself as a pomegranate tree. Intrigued by this exotic sight in my garden and having heard about the many health benefits of pomegranates, I began to feed the tree with mulch. Tuis visited the bright blossoms and little pomegranates began to form, dotted all over the branches like miniature Chinese lanterns. At the end of summer, the tree was laden with rosy-cheeked pomegranates ready for picking. Some of the bright red globes were already bursting open to reveal juicy crimson seeds. After harvesting the fruit with thick garden gloves (watch those spikes on the branches), I started processing the pomegranates, washing them first and then splitting them open to

reveal pretty rubycoloured seeds. It was a labour of love, but it was worth it. My Farm Cove kitchen produced fresh fruit salads, fancy cocktails and lamb tagines, all adorned with shiny pomegranate seeds bursting with flavour. To preserve the remaining fruit, I decided to cook up a batch of pomegranate jelly to share this ‘superfood’ from the garden with family and friends.

What are superfoods? Superfoods are multi-taskers, brimming with nutrients and flavour and are usually low in calories. Think blueberries, lemons, spinach, broccoli and, of course, pomegranates – all super healthy and easy to grow. Pomegranates have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, but health studies have only recently revealed that this amazing fruit contains more antioxidants than

green tea, plus it is rich in iron and vitamins A, C and E. The fruit’s polyphenols can help the body rid itself of cancer-causing agents, its tannins lower blood pressure and stimulate the immune system; and its anthocyanins help reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels. The sweet-sourness of pomegranates is something of an acquired taste and the way the seeds are embedded within a thin membrane means that the fruit is a little fiddly to eat. Drinking the juice is a more convenient alternative and it is available in most supermarkets and health food shops. Whether you grow them in your garden, or buy them at the shops, make sure you add some superfoods to your daily diet. They will make you feel healthier and more energetic... the natural way.

Homemade Pomegranate Jelly Ingredients: • Seeds of 6-8 fresh, large pomegranates (or 5 cups pomegranate juice) • 4 cups sugar • 1 1/2 sachets jam-setting pectin (70g each) • Juice of 1 lemon • Large stainless steel pot, or preserving pan (other metals may react with the juice and taint the flavour) • Sterilised jam jars & sterilised lids

Discard peel and membranes. Strain the seeds and juice them in batches (1 1/2 cups at a time) in a blender, or food processor. Strain the crushed pulp (through cheesecloth or a jelly bag) to remove the small white kernels inside the seeds.

method:

Bring the pomegranate juice to a boil. Add sugar, lemon juice and pectin, whisk well to dissolve completely and simmer over a medium heat for 10-15 minutes.

Cut open a pomegranate and submerge in a large bowl of water. Remove the red seeds under water; most of the white membrane holding them together will float to the top.

Stir gently at regular intervals, until jelly reaches setting point (drop a little jelly on a cold plate and place it

www.eastlife.co.nz

quickly in the fridge; if it forms a skin the jelly is ready). Skim and discard any foam off the surface; ladle jelly carefully into the jars (a sterilised funnel helps). Fill jars nearly to the top; then seal. Label and store in a cool, dark pantry.

home You know where, now you know

Howe!

What’s in a name – or to be more precise – what’s in the names of our local streets? CHRISTINE MILES from the Howick Historical Village gives the low down on the history behind some of our thoroughfares. Residential Howe Street is perhaps best recognised today for its ample parking outside the tennis courts, playground and park but once it was the main street of a burgeoning Howick village. Popular opinion suggests “Howe” to be a shortened form of “Howick”, but the name has far loftier claims to fame, its real purpose, to recognise Lord Richard Howe. Lord Howe, known among his peers as Black Dick, because of his dark complexion, was a celebrated English admiral, born in London in 1728. At 13 years old, he joined the Royal Navy and, after a series of naval operations, he had been promoted to post-captain by the time he was 20. A lengthy career followed in which Howe ultimately rose to First Lord of the Admiralty in 1783. Then, in 1797, he was knighted. En route to this elevated post, he commanded various fleets during the Seven Years’ War, and the American and French Revolutions. Howe Street may not have such a prestigious local heritage, but as the original main street it saw many incidents of interest. Some of these culminated in an appointment before

the Magistrate where offenders had to explain misbehaviour such as drunkenness, brawling or nonpayment of debt. In April 1853, the Reverend Vicesimus Lush wrote indignantly in his diary about a licence application from Private Owen Lynch to operate a Public House in Howe Street. The Reverend complained to the captain who was the Resident Magistrate but to Rev Lush’s great surprise and disgust he found the captain favoured the application. In fact, he discovered the Public House was to be established with the captain’s own money! It was inevitable that Owen Lynch received his licence and subsequently became one of Howick’s wealthiest men. Interestingly, the pub was no small, cottage industry, it was a substantial building and well used as was Wagstaff’s General Store, behind which was the local forge. Where the park is today, the land was mostly swamp but in 1850 the locals decided they needed a cricket pitch. The swamp was subsequently drained and became known as the Howick Domain.

After cricket matches, it was also common practice for participants and spectators to move on to the pub for dinner and dancing. The tennis courts were added to the area in the late 1800s. By 1900 the local district was expanding. There were two churches on the ridge, (Catholic & Anglican; the latter All Saints Church) and before long the original Marine Hotel followed. This later burned to the ground but was rebuilt on the site of what is today, The Prospect of Howick. The post office, which was initially

located within Wagstaff’s, also moved to a new building on the ridge (now Picton Street) and the current post office is now located on the same site. Once the post office moved, and the new hotel was built, other shops appeared on the ridge, and by the mid-1920s, Howe Street had ceased to be the main street, becoming instead, a pleasant, residential precinct within walking distance of the new, thriving township. – Researched by Christine Miles from the archives at Howick Historical Village

King of NZ pottery New Zealand may not rate in the elite world of porcelain and bone china but for some 50 years Crown Lynn was a household name in tableware. From the 1950s, in particular, to the end of the 80s when the factory closed, there would have been few cupboards devoid of an ‘everyday’ Crown Lynn dinner set or a mantelpiece that didn’t feature a vase or one of Crown Lynn’s famous white swans. The iconic pottery range, sprung from parent company the Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company, was located in the west Auckland suburb of New Lynn. It ultimately produced more than 300 products including children’s crockery, Toby jugs, lamp bases, ornamental birds, souvenirs, bathroomware, vases, ornaments and bakeware but, arguably, it was the company’s dinner sets that were household names and pantry ‘must haves’.

Now Valerie Ringer Monk, herself an ardent Crown Lynn collector, has produced a comprehensive guide for Crown Lynn devotees and new collectors.

Because, despite the factory’s closure in 1989, pieces can still be found in New Zealand homes, second hand shops and various nooks and crannies around the country. They are as sought after as they were in their hey-day.

The Crown Lynn Collector’s Handbook will surely prove a boon to those dedicated to preserving the physical remains of this iconic company which played a significant role in New Zealand’s history.

What’s more this fascinating book contains A-Z listings including photographs of representative designs as well as their distinctive

backstamps and marks to help collectors correctly identify and appreciate the origins of the huge diversity of Crown Lynn products. Dimensions and dates are given for each entry and items are brought to life with snippets of Crown Lynn history. Whether readers prefer the practical everyday crockery or the quirky artware and figurines, this book will help them recognise these well loved treasures and identify the era from which they came. • Crown Lynn Collector’s Handbook by Valerie Ringer Monk, Published by Penguin Group (NZ). RRP $35. Available at all good book stores.

Local lad blooms in London Breaking ground in a concrete jungle may seem a daunting task. However, expat Howickian, Darryl Moore, has found, with a little hard work and a fair dose of talent, London’s streets can actually be paved with green. He explains to JON RAWLINSON. Former Howick College student Darryl says, in efforts to transform orphaned and derelict sites in London into usable garden spaces, he founded Cityscapes, a festival which presents garden installations by designers and artists. “It was an idea I and colleague and co-founder, Adolfo Harrison, had a few years ago and which we developed and launched last year,” he says. The landscape designers from Moore Harrison Land Design were inspired by a similar festival with temporary garden installations in public spaces in Bilbao, Spain. “We felt that, while garden design was well represented in London, thanks to the Chelsea Flower Show, this ran for only a week each year and within a confined showground. “We wanted something that was publicly accessible to a wider audience and situated in the heart of the city,” Darryl says. “Cityscapes promotes creative approaches to greening the urban environment. We curate collaborations between garden and landscape designers and artists,

working with various London cultural organisations, to create temporary and permanent garden installations.” Following studies at MIT, Darryl traded the bright lights of Howick in 1984, moving to England to “experience life in an international cultural epicentre.” He then gained qualifications at Pickard School of Garden Design located at the Garden Museum in London in 2003, and picked up a Silver Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show the following year. Despite dedicated effort and sheer determination, building a festival from the ground up was no easy task. “The first year is difficult for any new start up, and for us it involved convincing a wide variety of stakeholders that Cityscapes was a viable endeavour. “From the start we had positive responses from cultural organisations, such as the National Theatre, Imperial War Museum, The Old Vic Tunnels and Design Museum; their support was encouraging.” This year, Cityscapes – July through to October – will hit a little

closer to home for Darryl when a garden, inspired by the landscape surrounding New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay winery in Marlborough, is re-established in Waterloo, following its recent Silver Gilt medal win at Chelsea. “Seeing the Cloudy Bay garden at Chelsea certainly reminded me of the South Island; it was an accurate representation,” Darryl says. “The garden will be remixed into new versions for summer by four upcoming designers in the South Bank area, with a fifth version to appear at the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Shades of Autumn show in late October. “We will then have an installation at the British Library over the winter months.” Looking to the future, Darryl says he would love to bring Cityscapes home to his native shore. “The idea was always that it could be repeated in other cities, so it would be great to do it in Auckland. If anyone is interested, get in touch!”

Award-winning kitchens come to town They say good things come to those who wait. Well, those who have long-awaited a taste of something different can now celebrate the return of a well-respected company to our eastern suburbs after 15 years.

Established for more than three decades, Stewart Scott Cabinetry is a locally-owned kitchen manufacturing company that has carved out a solid reputation in the industry. Now, together with its in-house kitchen design service, Inside Vision, the business has recently relocated from Manukau to East Tamaki. Just a stone’s throw from its old headquarters in Arwen Place, the company is housed in brand new, purpose-built premises aligning itself with the vision to continually redefine boundaries in design. Boasting a stunning kitchen showroom with top of the range examples, Inside Vision and its

exceptional kitchen design team are well-equipped to bring any vision or concept to life. Its team of highly competent and qualified kitchen designers work in synergy to produce not just ordinary kitchens, but extraordinary ones. Directed by Heather Wood, the team consists of branch manager Rebecca Banks, Alexis Stanaway, Brenda Hrstich and Melanie Williams. Most of the team are Certified kitchen Designers – a qualification earned from the prestigious National kitchen & Bathroom Association (NkBA) – the rest are close to earning this title. Considering only 40 designers around

the country have attained this status, it cements the fact that some of the best kitchen designs stem from Inside Vision. To back this up, the team has several awards to its name for outstanding design from the NkBA. Extremely motivated with combined experience spanning decades, this creative group is committed to the task at hand: designing everyday splendour. “The kitchen is such a busy part of the house,” says Alexis, who specialises in finding storage solutions. “It really has a hard life so we want to create a nice environment for people to work and spend time in.”

Being able to draw from the expertise and resources of a household name such as Stewart Scott Cabinetry is a big bonus too, says Rebecca. “We can produce and source lots of different materials and designs that others can’t – everything is possible!” As a result, word of this exceptional team’s ability has travelled far and wide and Inside Vision has become synonymous with cutting edge innovation and design. In fact, the kitchens speak for themselves. So, book an appointment at the showroom to see light, texture and colour flow in perfect harmony, or brainstorm with the kitchen geniuses over an excellent cup of coffee!

Modern, streamlined design is also a big focus at Inside Vision.

aleXis, heather, reBeCCa, melanie, Brenda www.eastlife.co.nz

“We look at how we incorporate lighting,” says Rebecca. “We also look at everything in terms of spatial design and the relationship of the kitchen with other living areas and making sure there is smooth indoor and outdoor flow.”

electrician then came in to finish off the job. Word of his talents soon travelled, and Mark took on numerous projects, for acquaintances, for himself, and for large corporations such as Sky TV. He counts amongst his innumerable conquests a two-storey dwelling with a pool built from scratch situated in one of Howick’s most desirable locations, The Mews, and a Cockle Bay one-bedroom stucco house which was transformed into a four-bedroom, Mediterranean-themed abode. When he was stuck, he consulted his friend and builder Darrin Fordham, now a real estate agent based in Howick. During that time, Mark’s burgeoning reputation as a fastidious builder in Howick grew, and he was

approached to do insurance repairs for an acquaintance. “He said to his insurance company, ‘I’m pulling all my insurance with you if it’s not Mark doing the job. His work is quality’.” So, for 15 years Mark and a team of four worked on insurance repairs including flood and fire-damaged properties. Inevitably, there have been some spanners in the works including falling off a roof, standing on a nail and two hernias. “When I hurt my foot, I just wrapped it up, drank Jim Beam every night, and carried on working,” says Mark. “When I finally went to the doctor he said I was lucky to still have a foot!” From the start Mark was determined to do a good job and worked hard. “I

did a lot of hours. I would start at 7am and be in bed at 11pm. The more I went the more energy I had.” Developing such an extensive property portfolio has had its financial losses and gains but, Mark says money isn’t the key motivator. “It’s the fulfilment I get at the end of the job that makes me go, ‘wow’!” he says. “I enjoy helping people. I need to see a beautiful result at the end and if the result’s good I’m happy.” One project close to his heart was the renovation of his parents’ home, originally a former doctor’s surgery in Huntly. He bought the property, stripped everything, redesigned the roof and added on a bathroom, a kitchen and

an extra bedroom. “I said to them [mum and dad], ‘that’s yours till the day you die. I’ll pay your rates, insurances, everything’. My mum has it just like new.” Today, the father of two young boys, aged seven and nine, has just completed his family home in Somerville and is now focused on his new building inspection business, First Choice House Inspections. Despite being satisfied with his current home, Mark thirsts for more. “I want to do another place and leave a better legacy.” His advice to those starting out? “Learn how to do it yourself and give it a go because you’re going to save a lot of money and get a lot of fulfilment out of it.”

Putting mother-in-law in her place This Father’s Day, if the mother-in-law dares to venture some pointed critique, dad needn’t be a shrinking violet, as long as he’s learnt to hold her tongue, that is! JON RAWLINSON looks askance at this intriguing plant.

The perfect gift for dads who adore their plants, mother-in-law’s tongue could help him practise strategies and be ready for her assaults because, like any boy scout, when dealing with the enemy, it pays to be prepared.

Provided these plants receive a little sun, water, some well-drained soil and (of course) much love, they will take their place in the home for years to come.

As succulents, their leaves store moisture, so be careful not to overwater; sagging leaves actually indicate that the soil is too wet, rather than too dry.

What is mother-in-laW’s mother-in-law’s tongue anyWay? anyway? Mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata), also known as the snake plant, has upright, multicoloured leaves – some reaching up to 60cm in height – with white or yellow borders. While some may say the motherin-law, like the snake, is capable of spitting her share of poison, not to mention getting under your skin, it must be conceded that some sonin-laws could learn a thing or two by listening to her advice. These plants are poisonous if ingested and even handling them can cause skin irritation, but mother-in-law’s tongue can be beneficial, actually absorbing toxins from the air.

Where, When when and hoW how to plant These house-proud houseplants prefer dry soil and air, and will thrive indoors. Place in a bright area – or in partial shade – away from direct sunlight. They favour temperatures in the range of 15-25 degrees Celsius, but

When growing from cuttings, they will require more water than usual until their root systems develop. After a couple of months, roots should be well established, at which point, re-pot the plants into soil suitable for growing cacti.

pests Pests can survive in slightly warmer or colder conditions.

Strangely enough, some pests have never learnt not to mess with this mother! These plants are susceptible to thrips and scale but treatment is readily available.

While mother-in-law’s tongue is available from garden centres, it can easily be propagated from cuttings. To do so, cut 10-12cm sections of leaves and set them aside in an airy room. Once the cuts have healed slightly, they can be planted. This should take about 24 hours. Plant the cuttings with the top end up in potting mix and place the container in a light, warm area.

Care

While we can’t say that by having mother-in-law’s tongue firmly in his grasp, dad will stand a better chance of securing the favour of his beloved’s matriarch, it may help sow the seeds of friendship, or (at least) afford the chance to get in the odd pointed ‘dig!’ However, if the above suggestions sound too much like hard work, you could always just get dad a Led Zep’ CD (I recommend Led Zeppelin IV) and any old plant; call it Robert, job done.

Mother-in-law’s tongue is a tough old bird, able to cope with almost anything the environment throws at her; she’s no wilting willow!

Great expectations...

building | eastlife

Nick Neben is a director of specialist renovation company Smith & Sons Howick and a time-served builder of more than 30 years experience.

We all expect things in life... a great movie after seeing a trailer... a gourmet meal after reading a menu... a six-pack stomach after buying an ab machine (as seen on TV!)... but more often than not we are left feeling disappointed. Being in business offers many different challenges, the biggest being meeting expectations. Good businesses thrive on providing their customers with quality, value and that extra service. In the building industry, determining your clients’ expectations, right from the very first meeting is crucial in making sure their expectations are achievable. I recently met with a client who,

for the life of him, wasn’t going to disclose his anticipated budget for a rather large renovation to his home. If we had known his expectations were simply not achievable within his budget, it would have saved us both a lot of time. Tailoring a realistic budget around a client’s needs is a sure way of attaining their trust and benchmarking their expectations. Life is full of expectations. Some of us are more realistic than others when it comes to those expectations.

achievable outcomes to suit their budget ensures we maintain expectation levels.

With expectations there is always a risk of disappointment if ideas and concepts are not clearly discussed.

Whether favourable or unfavourable, expectations are quite often moulded from the positive and negative experiences we encounter in our lives. What we expect of our lives today, we can expect to be different as we grow older.

Offering our clients realistic and

In last month’s column I touched on

the importance of timing. Timing and expectations go hand in hand in our industry to achieve our clients’ “great expectations”. To achieve both there has to be trust and openness – that way we can see if expectations for a project are realistic. If not, perhaps we can then look at ways to modify the plan and make a few compromises whilst still going a long way to meet a client’s wish list within their budget.

When two people separate, they have many issues to sort out, but the most important is their relationship with their children. Children need to be put first. It is a principle of family law that irrespective of whose decision it was to separate, matters, such as the care of children and division of property, should be dealt with in such a manner as to cause the least further distress to all concerned. Your relationship with your partner may be changing, but your role as a parent is for life. Therefore, the arrangements being made for your children should receive priority. Provided there are no safety concerns for the children, it is advisable for partners to reach interim agreements themselves. DO NOT use your children as weapons; not only will it negatively impact on their future, it will also do you no favours if your matter ends up before the family court.

Many people take advice from others who have been through the process. I suggest you do not rely on legal advice from such people as each person’s circumstances could be different. People rarely hear the full story in the pub or around a coffee table! The best decisions for your children are where: • You both co-operate with each other • You and your children (when they are old enough to say what they think) work together to sort out arrangements for their future • You reach agreement without fighting and arguing • You encourage your children to express their feelings and be involved in plans – this will help them adapt to their new lives • You both stick to arrangements, but are flexible and co-operate if they need to be changed for your children’s sake • There are as few as possible changes to other parts of your children’s lives. Your children need both of you regardless of the issues in your relationship. They also need to keep connected with family and whanau (grandparents, uncles and aunts and cousins) and friends.

How young are you? Bill Potter – the Business Maverick. Bill is a Speaker, FriendCoach*, blogger, author and... The 3Guy*. www.speakers.co.nz/billpotter.html www.btob.co.nz/the-business-maverick I once asked a 13-year-old... ‘How young are you?’ He smiled. ‘Don’t you mean, how old am I?’ ‘Why do you say that?’ I replied. He paused and said, ‘Because that’s what everybody asks.’ ‘Except me,’ I added. Then he continued... ‘Actually, I’m 13 years... young.’ I knew then, that he could be ‘saved’. Being a Maverick is not easy but, you do have more fun than you’re allowed. In our chat, he told me that when he suggested how things could be done ‘differently’ other kids would often respond with, ‘but we always do it like this’. I assured him that, ‘only change can create the future’. So, authentic achievers, embrace change. Back to ages. Your ‘Chronological Age’ is measured from the day you arrive on our Earth thingie. Your ‘Biological Age’ is the age of your body systems (I told you not to smoke!).

remember, and, how you function emotionally. I know this is getting ‘heavy’, but it’s best you know why you’re ‘strange’, OK. No. We ain’t finished yet. Your ‘Social Age’ is based on the set of expectations that you have about when life’s major events ‘should’ occur. Hey, I didn’t ‘invent’ all this stuff. If you get it ‘wrong’ you’ll start drinking again. Know what I mean? Yes. There is one more ‘Age’. This is ‘EastLife’ remember. We tell it like it is! Pay attention. The best ‘Age’ is... ready...? ‘My Chosen Age!’ For me, my ‘Chronological Age’ is (mumble). ‘My Chosen Age’ is 27. Any questions? So, when my 13-year-old conversationalist eventually asked me, how ‘young I wuz’... I informed him that ‘My Chosen Age was 27’.

Will housing bubble pop? Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings. I seem to be reporting each month of new record house prices being reached in our local market – Eastern Beaches. And again the past month has seen a significant rise in the local area’s median house price to a new record of $720,750 for the month of June (up from $687,000 for May), on the back a total of 178 sales for the month (down from 225 for May).

The movement was such I had to refresh my Microsoft Excel knowledge on changing the axis values for my Excel graph as previously it only went up to $700,000. Auctions, and other no price marketing methods, are still the preferred method chosen by vendors to ensure they get the maximum the market will pay. The Eastern Beaches figures are not alone in this. Across Auckland, and

other major centres of the country, similar rises are also the norm. So, will this lead to a bursting property bubble? The experts are arguing it both ways, but here are a couple of factors that would indicate not. Firstly, there’s the return on investment. Higher property prices, with rents not increasing at the same rate, gives the effect of a lower return on investment. However, if the alternative, eg money in the bank, is also low, then it can be argued that the property market is not overcooked. Secondly, are the figures from the

Reserve Bank on housing loan approvals which show a declining trend. These weekly figures on housing loans show that the number of approvals, which percentage-wise have remained above the same week a year earlier, have been in decline since around the beginning of 2013. Finally, for the week ending July 12 they dropped into negative territory. So, looking at that week this year, less people had loans approved than for the same week last year. Maybe, like water, the market will find its own level.

adding magic touch for house sale

Here is a sample of items professional stagers often use to dress each room.

When marketing a property, attractive presentation goes a long way towards securing a sale. In some cases, home staging will help achieve a fresh look in a short space of time. Home staging is all about illusions; it’s how a magician might sell a house.

How they are used is limited only by the creativity and vision of the stager.

It goes beyond decorating and cleaning. It’s perfecting the art of creating moods; making a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer, more loving and, best of all, encouraging buyers to purchase, without you keeping the items.

Staging is more than just preparing a house for sale. It comes after you’ve cleaned, decluttered, painted and made minor repairs. It’s all about dressing the house for sale – adding the small details: lipstick, mascara and a single strand of pearls.

Mirrors, Plants, Silk Flowers, Floor & Table Lamps, Area and Throw Rugs, Occasional Tables, Cushions, Small Love Seats, Ottomans, Baskets, Sofas.

Sell your property with me and get Auckland’s most successful real estate team behind you. At Barfoot & Thompson, we work as a team with no boundaries or restrictions, so any one of our 1,400 plus salespeople can sell your property. That’s just one of the reasons we’re Auckland’s market leader. Contact me today, and get the whole Barfoot & Thompson team working to deliver a premium price for your property.

MOTORING NO PLACE LIKE FOAM The 2014 Jeep Cherokee uses a revolutionary soy-based body sealer that helps deliver a tranquil driving experience while contributing to weight-reduction, cost-savings and sustainability. Developed with and supplied by Dow Automotive Systems, the soy content replaces the petroleum normally used in such material. The new foam bolsters 10 locations of the Cherokee’s body structure, including the A- and B-pillars and rear wheelwells. The New Jeep Cherokee arrives in New Zealand early next year.

Maserati rock ‘n’ roll Maserati has completed its first rock music world tour, but unlike other car makers that just sponsor concerts, Maserati’s legendary engines were the performers on stage. The music wasn’t heavy metal; instead, it was high-performance lightweight metal that studiously avoided a middle of the road performance. Seven Notes is a unique sound project from Maserati and Bowers & Wilkins that was inspired by the seven notes produced by Maserati car engines. Renowned music producer, Howie B, meticulously recorded the sound of Maserati engines, used it to create music at world-famous Abbey Road Studios, and then took Maserati and the sound of its engines ‘on the road’. The ‘Seven Notes World Tour’ has been hosted in seven iconic cities: Dubai, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York and, finally, in London.

to feature an integrated Bowers & Wilkins car audio system.

The exhibition of sound, music, art and design celebrated the arrival of the new Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli, the marque’s first models

A twin-turbo V6 petrol and V6 turbodiesel powered Ghibli will arrive in Australia and New Zealand in early 2014.
