car carrying three teen boys which lost control along Mellons Bay Road last week narrowly missed pedestrians and wrote off two cars. Some Mellons Bay Road residents say frustration and fear for pedestrian safety is at an all-time high following the crash which took place at around 8.15pm on Tuesday, October 3. This is one of three crashes on Mellons Bay Road in eight days, with a collision just days before, and a suspected drink driving accident on Saturday night.

In Tuesday’s crash the driver spun out into a parked car, which was thrown airborne into a power pole, before the vehicle hit another parked car further down the street. There were no serious injuries, but five pedestrians witnessed the crash. Police and emergency services responded to the accident. The incident has rattled the street’s residents who believe traffic-calming measures are urgently needed. “We didn’t see the car, but you just knew there was an accident about to happen because all we heard was a car screeching down the road,” says
Bev Mallowes who witnessed the second crash. “A friend and I had just walked out of my son David’s driveway, and we were standing on the footpath chatting. My car was right in front of us, and Jenny’s car was about two parks down. “Instinct told us to run, and we did. We were terrified because you know that no matter how fast you run, you don’t know where the car is going to end up so you just have to run and hope for the best,” she says. Bev’s son, David Mallowes, says Tuesday’s accident is one of a growing number of speed-related inci-
dents along Mellons Bay Road in recent months. “Just last week there was a dramatic collision on the corner of Mellons Bay Road and Beach Road, and I know of several other cars that have spun out at that very corner in the last few months,” he says. “On an afternoon three months ago, two cars racing down Mellons Bay Road past the school ricocheted off each other with one taking out a pole and transformer.” He says residents are also concerned for their safety after two near misses of pedestrians went unreported in the past two months. ➤ Turn to Page 5

Global day of peace O
nce a year, our Montessori preschool, acknowledges The International Day of Peace which was established in 1981 by the United Nations (UN). On this day the UN invites global participation to honour the cessation of violence and ceasefire and to commemorate the day through education and public awareness on peace. At the heart of the Montessori Philosophy is a focus on education for peace – Maria Montessori herself was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. She believed that education was the best “weapon” for peace and that children are a hope and promise for mankind. On September 21, International Day of Peace 2017, we marked this auspicious event in several ways. Firstly our children gathered to sing the beautiful “Light a candle for peace”, a well-known song in Montessori schools that reaches

out to every one of us with an impassioned plea that together we can make world peace a reality. Our preschoolers then worked together to plant kumara in our vegetable garden. This symbolised a new start, transformation, growth, and looking to the future. Through undertaking this planting it also reflects our identity as children of Aotearoa; according to
the kumara Whakapapa, Rongo the God of Peace cultivated food including kumara. We talked to the children about the importance of doves as symbols of peace and they each had the opportunity to create their own, excited by such a simple but joyful activity. Leading up to our special day we also created a Peace Board with each of our children represented in the circle of peace. To have global peace and the spirit of togetherness we asked our children what we need to do. This is what they said, “Love, be caring, friendly, hug, take care of each other and be helpful”. Peace begins in our homes and in our learning environments where we can encourage the child’s spirit, foster empathy for others, help them to spread universal love, tolerance and compassion. Loads of pre-loved books ready for new homes

t’s a book lovers dream at the Howick RSA with a treasure trove of second-hand books for sale at the annual Bookarama. Now in its 17th year, Bookarama, hosted by The Rotary Club of Howick, is the club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, bursting with books ready to go to new homes. Dozens of volunteers have spent hours sorting through tens of thousands of books, donated from the overflowing bookcases of Howick residents who are eager to see the books they no longer read go to new owners. Book collectors have until Sunday October 15 to head down to the Howick RSA and stock up on books, puzzles and games. “The response this year has been huge, and people have really been getting behind the fundraiser,” says Rob Mouncey

of Howick Rotary. “It gives the whole community a chance to get together, recycle their books and replenish their library, knowing that all the proceeds will go to supporting various community projects.”
In past years the Bookarama has raised more than $30,000 for the community, Mouncey says he hopes this year will be no exception. He says there will be no shortage of happy bookworms with many of the books cost-
ing no more than a gold coin. Mouncey says Rotary Club volunteers have been hard at work for months to make this event unforgettable for booklovers. “We are always blown away by the turnout at Bookarama each year, and it’s good to see the residents of Howick enjoying the event so much.” After Bookarama, any unsold books are offered to schools to add to their libraries or to be used in similar fundraising events to raise money for the school. Bookarama will be held at the Howick RSA, 25 Wellington Street, Howick. ■■ Thursday, October 12: 9am9pm ■■ Friday, October 13: 9am5pm ■■ Saturday, October 14: 9am5pm ■■ Sunday, October 15: 9am4pm
HPK success at short course champs Howick Pakuranga Swim Club (HPK ) has once again seen strong success at the New Zealand Short Course Championships held last week at the Sir Owen Glenn Aquatic Centre in Auckland.
HPK placed third overall with 2224 final points, below North Shore and United with 4194 and 3382 points respectively. Howick Pakuranga swimmer Daniel Hunter
fought through illness and antibiotics to win the men’s 50m freestyle A final in 22.16, ahead of Julian Weir (Aquabladz) and Dan Caldwell (St Peter’s). Hunter said having to
scratch from events due to illness was irritating. ■■ A full report and list of winners will be in next week’s issue and online at www.times.co.nz

Huge win but battle not won The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) is celebrating what it calls a huge victory for the Stockade Hill battle to save the views. “But people still need to put in submissions to ensure this battle is won,” said HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth. “We are pleased council is heeding the public outcry and our petition for the protection of Stockade Hill Views, firstly with Plan Change 3 in August which created a new viewshaft protecting views from the top of Stockade Hill and now with the latest plan change.” Plan Change 4 rectifies the errors published on the GIS viewing maps on the council website allowing 18 metre Mixed Use commercial and apartment buildings “totally blocking the magnificent sea views as one enters Howick round Stockade Hill, and over-dominating the sweeping view of Howick and our historic Selwyn Church”. These heights, and other nearby sites, have now been returned to previous limits of eight to nine metres, in response to constant lobbying. “ This is the correct height as shown on the Howick Special Character Business overlay won by Howick’s ratepayer groups before the judge of the Independent Hearings Panel of the Unitary Plan,” she said. “If both proposed Plan Changes (3 and 4) get council approval, our aim of protecting Howick’s views for the foreseeable future will have been won,” she said. However, the battle is not yet over, Mrs Mackereth said. “HRRA urges all of those who cherish these views to have their say and to support the latest Plan Change 4 of the council by making a submission to support this change back to the 8 to 9 metre heights. “If sufficient submissions for the proposal are not received, the views could still be lost forever.” The final outcome of council’s voting will not be known till at least Christmas. ■■ Readers can have their say on the council website under the Auckland Unitary Plan, Plan Change 4. Submissions close at noon on October 27.

Chess champs get down to business T
he eighth Asian Seniors Chess Championships are underway at Waipuna Conference Centre. The event, which runs all week before the prizegiving on Sunday, October 15, was put together under chief organiser Paul Spiller of Howick. He was appointed by the Asian Chess Federation and NZ Chess Federation to organise the event. Spiller, a qualified (by FIDE which is the World Chess Federation) International Chess Organiser, is the current president of the Oceania Chess Confederation. The event is a highlight on the Asian chess calendar and has drawn big names such as Grandmaster Eugene Torre from the Phillipines, Australian Grandmaster Darryl Johansen and 15-times Pakistani National Chess champion Mahmood Lodhi. Local names featuring in the tournament include Spiller, Stan Yee and Ben Lim in the over 50 section and Tony Booth and Jim Benson competing in the over 65. Top performers go on to next year’s World Seniors event in Bled, Slovenia as well as automatic interntional titles.

3 crashes in 8 days
➤➤From page 1 “We can’t wait until someone gets seriously hurt before we do something. What if one of these crashes happened when kids were walking home from school?” he says. The community is rallying behind Mr Mallowes as he readies himself to form a petition to present to the Howick Local Board, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport. “I have visited all five witnesses today, and every one of them as well as eight other neighbours wants some traffic calming
introduced. I am amazed to get 100 per cent support so far,” he says. Counties Manukau road policing manager Rod Honan says he is taking the Mellons Bay residents’ complaints seriously. “I will get the intelligence group to have a look, and see what [accidents] have been reported in this area over time,” he says. “We are all about safer communities together, reducing crime and reducing victimisation so if we find that there are increased numbers of cars speeding along that road, there are things we can do.

t was a fantastic day for Pakuranga Baptist Kindergarten’s orchard planting last week. It was attended by about 100. The kindy had families from the kindergarten, past and present, members of the neighbouring churches, and the local community. The kindy kids are looking forward to monitoring how fast the trees grow and are already talking about when they will be able to pick fruit from them in years to come. “Pakuranga Baptist Kindergarten’s teaches the philosophy that we are all Kaitiaki, guardians, who protect and nurture the environment, so that it in turn the environment will protect and nurture us,” said the kindy’s Carrie Harman. “This orchard is a great example of this, a community coming together to do something positive for the local environment, which if we nurture and care for will protect and nurture us by providing as with fruit, shelter and shade in years to come.” The kindy teachers are passionate about exposing the children to this from an early age. “Studies have shown that our experience in nature as children shape the relationship we have with nature as an adult,” she said. “We have achieved more than just a community orchard, we have also got locals feeling empowered that they now feel confident to plant fruit trees in their own gardens.”

Our paper today dated October 12 is a significant date which brought tragedy to our New Zealand nation on a massive scale – the Battle of Passchendaele, in Flanders, Belgium. Its impact was huge on the entire World War I effort. On October 12, 1917, New Zealand suffered what is known still as our country’s blackest day. More New Zealanders died in just one afternoon than in any other disaster before or since. We must reflect love and remember them forever as their honourable history will never part. Howick RSA continues to keep alive those traditional values of commemoration, compassion and camaraderie but is undergoing a shift to become more relevant, integrated and valued within our community beyond those who have served . Times have changed and membership is open now to all New Zealand citizens. The club offers a safe friendly environment for all families to enjoy with a good quality restaurant – Stockades serving reasonably priced meals , says Scott (secretary manager).

here is a buzz of excitement as Elm Park School prepares for its Golden Jubilee celebrations. Principal Trish Plowright says that deputy principal Belinda Johnston, who is orchestrating the 50-year celebratory event on October 28, has been sieving through thousands of old photographs in school albums. Discovering quaint pictures from the time the school was first built in 1967, Ms Johnston has been posting them on the school Facebook page. “The history of our school was lost over the years which is why the jubilee organising committee has been trying to piece it together,” says Ms Johnston. They struck gold as they connected with the first deputy principal of the school Des Jack, now 90, who filled in some blanks with names and details. They unearthed priceless nuggets about the second principal of the school, Harry Sprosen. The story goes that he trucked an entire school hall from Salvation Army and moved it onto the school site. “He even cut it into half and built a new section in-between so that they could extend the hall. The hall is named after him and is known as Harry’s Hall,” she says. The school has managed to

track Mr Sprosen’s son who will be attending the celebrations. Son of the founding principal of the school Ivan Kurtovich will also be there. The opening of the school swimming pool in 1975 is another milestone in the school’s 50-year old journey. While the swimming pool is still in use, Mrs Plowright says it is expensive to maintain. The celebration begins with an opening ceremony followed by former principals raising the school flag. All guests will be gifted a flax flower made by school teachers along with a goody bag. There will be cake cutting, choir singing, ongoing multicultural performances and the ceremony of burying a time
capsule that every class is currently working on. “Just so that when it is opened in 25 years, it will give the students an idea of what our school was like,” she says. There will also be a planting of an Elm tree. “It will be the first Elm tree in Elm Park School which used to be known as Pakuranga School No 5 when it opened in February 1967,” says Mrs Plowright. The school expects a turnout of around 200 people. With 40-plus nationalities in the school, there is a lot more emphasis on culture these days says Mrs Plowright. The other focus is on maintaining an old site (the school still has a 1967 building) while revamping the old school.

CHILLED & FROZEN
P
olice officers showed off some high energy dance moves at a fundraiser at the weekend, much to the delight of around 200 people. The Diwali Fundraiser was hosted by the Rotary Club of Somerville at the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. There was a real buzz as the police instantly connected with the audience who were both impressed and amazed as the officers performed a foot-tapping, traditional Indian folk dance with great élan. The Bhangra dance that hails from the state of Punjab in India is performed during festive occasions. Contributing their bit to the service organisation, the police added a special sparkle to the Rotary Diwali celebration. Talking about the Police dancing troupe, Sergeant Gurpret Arora, District Ethnic Service coordinator Counties Manukau, said the diverse police dance troupe thought it was a nice way to engage with the community. Another highlight of the evening was an Indian Bridal Fashion Show that showcased an array of exquisite ensembles in a range of stunning colours. The beautiful mix of trousseau designs ranged from traditional to contemporary and opulent. Adding to the fun factor were models escorting Rotarians to the catwalk in the final sequence of the fashion show. A pleasant surprise was Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and his wife Lucy sportingly doing the catwalk on the invitation of the models. An auction conducted by Alan Owens, manager of Pakuranga Harcourts, kept the tempo of the evening upbeat, while the delicious food that was generously sponsored appealed to everyone’s taste-buds. The beautifully-orchestrated evening in the season of giving and sharing was organised by past president of the Rotary Club of Somerville Vinod Sareen and past Rotary District Governor Dr Philly Karani along with members of the vibrant Rotary Club of Somerville that meets at the Howick Club every Wednesday evening. The idea of a fundraiser took seed when Rajesh Gupta, visiting president from Rotary Club of Poona, asked if they could support a major project. The fundraiser supported by all the Rotary Clubs in the area was in aid of contributing funds towards a water harvesting and conservation project in a tribal village in District Pune, India, as well as other Rotary projects in New Zealand. Mr Sareen said he was overwhelmed with people’s selfless service and generosity of spirit. “It’s amazing how Rotary enables us to not only reach out to a range of communities in New Zealand but also overseas,” he said. “This Rotary International project is in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Poona Downtown and Rotary Club of Somerville., along with the help of Rotary Districts 9920 and 3131 as well as the Rotary Foundation.”

Concert was such a joy
My name is Brian Pittams and used to be (it seems like a lifetime ago) Principal of Howick Intermediate School. When I was appointed to that position, it was made clear that it carried a secondary role: principal of the Howick School of Music; a role I treasured more and more as I experienced the fervour and commitment of the tutors to model and teach the skills of producing music. Just as heart-warming was the tutors’ drive to nurture a love of music. The awe I felt then has not diminished. Indeed, having attended the 50th Anniversary Concert on Saturday (September 30), I can say that the standards of performance and musicality have continued to rise during the past 20 years. The concert was so good, it charged St Columba’s Church with joy and open emotion. The Howick district is lucky to have such a treasure.

We don’t need milk
There are reports that New Zealand dairy farmers are “jumpy”, expecting that abuse of bobby calves will surface again as it has in many recent exposés, including “The Price of Milk” earlier this year. They should be. It’s calving season, and people who care about justice more than profits are watching. Every year, New Zealand’s almost five million dairy cows give birth to more than two million “bobby calves”, who are torn from their mothers within hours of birth and killed, often extremely violently. Worth little to the dairy
farmer, bobby calves often do not receive even basic care. Because they are not intended to live long, they usually receive only one meal a day. They are also fed milk replacer instead of their own mother’s milk, since farmers want to sell that. After about four days, the youngsters are crammed onto trucks and transported, often over long distances, to face a terrifying and painful slaughter. Mother cows instantly bond with their babies and often frantically cry out for days after they are taken away. I grew up on a dairy farm, and the memories of the stricken cries of the mother cows still haunt me. Humans don’t need to drink cows’ milk, and we’re healthier if we don’t. With so many delicious, dairy-free milks on the market, why not choose healthy and humane plant-based milks instead?

fertility. In medieval Europe, wedding guests typically stacked small pastries as high as possible, and the bride and groom would kiss over the resulting pile of sweetness. The higher the pastry tower was, the happier the couple would be. Sweet, tall, tiered cakes like those seen today in weddings across the western world only became commonplace around the 18th Century. Nowadays, bakeries create wedding cakes that are true works of art. Anything goes when it comes to the shape, flavour and colour— and toppers are no longer limited to the tiny bride and groom model.
A symbolic gesture The tradition of the wedding cake being sliced by the bride and groom dates back to the Middle Ages. The gesture symbolised the first action taken by the bride and groom as a legitimate couple. Traditionally, the groom rests his hand on the bride’s as a sign of fertility and protection.
Are you covered? Midst the rush of wedding plans the last thing to cross the minds of many couples is organising insurance cover for their new home, contents and even the wedding itself. The prospect of a wedding not going ahead due to accident, illness or a natural disaster doesn’t usually cross our minds but it can happen. Fortunately wedding insurance is available but is not offered by all companies. If planning an overseas wedding it pays to look into insuring the event (your travel consultant may be informed on that aspect) and even if you are marrying close to home, it is worthwhile exploring options should the unexpected happen. However, insurance planning should go beyond the big day.
Have you made a will? If you have, is it up to date? Have you made enduring powers of attorney?
Couples already living together may have contents insurance and if gifts are left in the house they will, in most cases, be insured under this plan. If gifts are to be left in a reception lounge check if there is cover for theft or breakage. And if your own home and contents are not covered before you go on honeymoon, get cracking and insure. Newlyweds should also re-evaluate life covers. Now is the time to consider wills and any other legalities that may result from a change in marital status. Don’t put off making a will. Married or not, many couples will have acquired assets and while no one likes to think of death at such a happy time, in the event of a fatality, no wills may leave family members in a quandary.
If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, contact us at Galbraiths. Galbraiths offer a full range of legal services to clients, including buying and selling properties, commercial and civil litigation, court work, sale and purchase of businesses, franchising, family and employment law, wills and estate planning and advice regarding setting up and administering of family trusts.

A love story
That gown doesn’t have to be white W
hen it comes to your wedding dress, white isn’t your only option. If, at a time in the past, the boldest move you could make when it came to the colour of your wedding dress was to pick off-white instead of a pristine snowy shade, that’s simply no longer the case. Like most rules, the one that dictates the colour of your wedding dress is meant to be broken — and more and more brides are taking the plunge. Read on for some inspiration. Did you know that the white wedding dress has only been popular in Europe since the 19th Century? Before then, it was customary for the bride to wear — you guessed it — a colourful dress! Today, the brightly coloured dress is making a comeback and designers from around the world are reinventing this vintage trend. decades ago, boutiques are now stocked with gowns in every colour of the rainbow — and then some. Whether you’re in the market for an electric pink ball gown or an emerald green A-line, your local bridal boutique is sure to deliver the goods. On the fence about your colour choice because you fear you’ll shock your guests by choosing an unc onventional gown? Remember that this is your day and that you have the final say on what you wear. That being said, there are ways to compromise: you could incorporate a coloured sash or veil in your look or choose an all-white dress with colourful stitching. So, will you let your true colours shine through with your dream wedding dress?

Ambitions high among renters I
Price, location, and valued extras Renters were asked what the important factors were in choosing a rental property. Eighty-eight per cent of respondents said price, and 85 per cent said location. The number of bedrooms (67 per cent), and kitchen space (52 per cent) were also important.
Relationship with a professional property manager
The most popular ‘extras’ influencing renters’ choice in a property included additional car parking spaces (57 per cent) and extra storage space (53 per cent). Outdoor space, a fully fenced section, and pets being allowed were also popular; each considered an influential factor in choosing a property by over 40 per cent. Spa pools proved popular with just 13 per cent. Barfoot & Thompson also asked tenants: how long they had been in their rental property and if they had been there longer than one year, what was the reason they stayed. Eight per cent had been in their rental property less than six months, 24 per cent for up to two years, twenty per cent for two-to-five years, and fortyseven per cent more than five years. Tenants reasons for staying beyond one year included the property having reasonable rent (64 per cent of respondents) and being close to school and/or work (59 per cent). Thirty-seven per cent said having a good property manager influenced their decision to stay. “A significant number of people in Auckland live in rental properties,” says Ms Barfoot. “Unsurprisingly, renters and buyers are looking for the same things – the right amount of space, in a good location for work and schools, and something within their budget. Further down the list, but still important, renters also named insulation and good heating. “Tenancy duration and security is really important for both tenants and landlords, which is why we like to understand what keeps tenants happy in a property.”
When asked who they would prefer to manage their tenancy, 48 per cent of respondents said they would prefer a professional agency, 25 per cent said an owner, and 28 per cent said they had no preference for one or the other. Survey respondents rated Barfoot & Thompson’s communication timeliness as 6.5 on a scale of one to ten, something which Ms Barfoot says the business is focussing on improving. “Around a year ago, we updated our property management training programme specifically to improve communication. Training now covers different personality types, and communication styles to help personalise how we work with tenants. “Our mystery shopper results show this is working so we hope when we run this survey again next year, this score is higher,” says Ms Barfoot.

What tenants asked
Tenants asked about the frequency of rental inspections, which Ms Barfoot says is a common question. “The frequency is set by the insurance policy the property owner has signed up to. Recently, some policies have revised the timeframe. “Some require inspection every three months for the policy to remain valid, whereas others allow longer between visits. “For tenants, it’s a good time to bring up any smaller maintenance issues. Sometimes we find for the smaller things tenants wait, so an inspection can be a prompt.” Following the results of the survey, Barfoot & Thompson is aiming to influence a more positive experience for renters. Ms Barfoot concludes, “It’s important to understand what tenants and landlords needs and expectations are. We want tenants to be happy with their tenancy; whether its communication, how we handle maintenance, or any part of the property management agreement we have on behalf of an owner.”

n a survey of Auckland renters living in properties managed by Barfoot & Thompson, a strong majority maintained their ambition to own a home of their own - with fifty-nine per cent saying they intended to buy in the next two-to-five years. The response surprised even Barfoot & Thompson, Auckland’s leading real estate company. “We were taken by surprise by the positive response around buying a home in the next few years. It’s very encouraging particularly given much of the recent commentary around it has been negative,” says Barfoot & Thompson Director Kiri Barfoot. “From the media reports, I would have expected fewer renters to say that they are aiming to buy a home, but perhaps there has been a change in sentiment towards the future of buying a house. “A number of factors could be behind this. Auckland’s housing market has steadied in the past few months after several years of rising prices – we also have around 30 per cent more houses listed for sale than the same time last year. More choice is good for people thinking about buying. The unitary plan has also been confirmed, creating some certainty about future development in Auckland.” The Barfoot & Thompson survey, which was conducted in August, sought to open up the lines of communication and understand the good and the ‘could do better’ of Barfoot & Thompson’s property management service as well as build on its enhanced property management training programme that launched just over a year ago. A random sample of one thousand tenants (response rate 31 per cent) from its database of 15,000 tenants were contacted.

Maths teacher goes to top of the class By Farida Master
M
athematics is universally shunned, and educator Subash Chandar K knows it. Mr Chandar K left his job and backpacked to 26 countries. It didn’t take him long to work out a common denominator. The minute he introduced himself as a mathematics teacher, people would promptly say they hated maths. “I couldn’t believe that regardless of which part of the world I was in, there was a universal dislike for maths,” smiles the award-winning curriculum leader of mathematics at Ormiston Senior College. His resolve to change how people feel about the subject became stronger while volunteering in Nepal and Bali at a children’s home. “Dealing with students with 30 different needs in a classroom in Bali, I felt there has to be a big shift in how we deliver content to kids.” Back in New Zealand, the journey began. It involves creating maths videos for students. A flipped classroom is when learning happens outside the traditional classroom. Mr Chandar K started creating YouTube videos where he answered a series of exam papers on video, teaching students the right strategy to solve mathematical problems. He created a YouTube series Calculus daily for Year 13 students in preparation for externals in 2016.
KC12775
Students would get a proper understanding from the fully worked-out answer papers and come prepared for the following day to class. The idea was well-received, not only by students but also by the teaching community. The 35-year-old was soon invited to host workshops for teachers’ professional learning; won a scholarship and asked to run workshops at the NZ Maths Conference in 2015 and 2017. Recipient of the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert Award, (an award for innovative educators) three years in a row, he was also acknowledged worldwide for winning the #Class Hack challenge during #HackTheClassRoom event held by Microsoft in September 2016. His work with the videos in L1 Algebra and L3 Calculus in 2016, has won him the Ernest Duncan Award 2016. Videos can be found under the channel: infinityplusone. He says that being the recent recipient of the Kalman Mathematics Teaching Prize means a lot to him. “The last one is quite special,” he says. “Mala Natraj the other teacher who won this award with me was my Year 13 Calculus Teacher in 1999 and she was my associate teacher who trained me to be a math teacher in 2006.” There couldn’t have been a better recognition of teaching excellence—integration of research in mathematics education into class-
room practice— for the two highly respected members of the Auckland Secondary School mathematics teaching community. Constantly striving to make the subject more interesting, Mr Chandar K has been recognised for introducing the Desmos tool, a cool way to teach graphs. Lately, the Sphero robot is another tool that has changed the landscape of teaching maths. “We have got 18 robots at the

Proud Boks pack powerful punch
T
rue rugby fans would have thrilled to the drama of Sunday’s tough Cape Town test won 25-24 by the All Blacks against a pugnacious South African team that bore no relation to that thrashed 57-0 at Albany a fortnight earlier. Seldom is champion hooker Dane Coles bettered. However in this epic he was no match for dynamic Malcolm Marx who ran like a rampant rhino and exhibited tenacity and technique in consistently winning ball from the breakdowns. Almost matching him for power running and work rate was ginger loosehead prop Steven Kitshoff and powerful skipper Eben Etzebeth who severely tested the brave New Zealand defence. While it was the Springbok forwards who ruled the roost up front despite the best efforts of skipper Kieran Read, it was the All Blacks mighty midgets who provided the sharper attacking thrust. Nehe Milner-Skudder with his dazzling sidestep and one glorious behind the back pass, was back to the form that made him a star at the 2015 World Cup before a series of injuries side-lined him for much of the past two years. Unfortunately he suffered

Agnew’s Angle another shoulder dislocation which has ended his season and will likely see him missing much of next year’s Super Rugby championship. Such a pity for a popular 26-year-old whose wizardry makes a pleasing variation from the power game of so many fellow wings twice his size. Another little whippet whose brave heart and audacious skill triumphs over menacing giants is 80kg Damian McKenzie, who wouldn’t have got a chance to show his class had Ben Smith not gone on sabbatical and Jordie Barrett not suffered a bad injury earlier in the year. Coach Steve Hansen’s “flea in a bottle” description of McKenzie is a fair summary of a 22-year-old who takes audacious risks but, like Beauden Barrett, is a freakish gamebreaker. Fittingly, it was McKenzie’s lightning acceleration that reaped the winning try although the magnificent Marx replied with the final one for the hosts.

An even younger man is 20-yearold, 102kg wing Rieko Ioane who has emerged as another prolific try-scorer who has showcased the backline depth New Zealand possesses. With the All Blacks happy to settle for a one-point win, this was a fair dinkum, heart and soul sporting contest in which there were no losers. Although it is an oft used phase I detest, rugby was the winner and it was great to see South African pride restored to its former glory.
The Boks have had their detractors and deservedly so judged on results since the 2015 World Cup. But let’s not forget the All Blacks had to battle hard for a 20-18 semifinal win against them before their classy 34-17 final against the Aussies. While it was good to see Sonny Bill Williams defend strongly and run hard and straight, he has been given several chances this season to demonstrate his once magical ball distribution and has failed to deliver.
Compare that to the power game of Ngani Laumape that brought him 15 Super Rugby tries this season, but was rarely seen in the black jersey. One of the success stories of 2016 was the cohesive midfield partnership of Ryan Crotty and Anton Lienert-Brown which surpassed that of Williams and Crotty. But like Laumape’s 15 Super tries, that failed to offer the selectors enough food for thought. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

for 17-year-old Whitburn, who first went as a 15-year-old but says that was more “for the experience” rather than competition. This time he went for the win – and he was “pretty happy” to achieve it. annemora’s Andre Heimgartner dominated the final race of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia’s penultimate 2017 event at Mount Panorama to claim the round victory, while Tim Miles capped a successful Bathurst weekend with a TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge clean sweep. After placing third and first in the opening two races, Heimgartner charged to the lead at the start of Sunday’s race three and quickly established a strong race lead. The New Zealander continued his record-setting pace to the chequered flag to ultimately claim a six-second victory over Alex Davison in second, while Heimgartner also eclipsed Matt Campbell’s 2015 race lap record with a time of 2:07.1820 on the second-to-last lap. “Getting the round win at Bathurst is always pretty good. The race start was good and I managed to get into the lead at the first corner and, from there, I just put my head down. The car was amazing, it was straight the whole race and I didn’t have to push too

hard and got the lap record as well. Overall, the weekend couldn’t have gone much better, apart from the first race.” said Heimgartner. Miles was the class of the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge in all three races, including Sunday’s final race of the weekend. Miles placed 12th outright and was the lead Challenge entry to the finish, completing his Bathurst clean sweep of race wins. Meanwhile, TAG Heuer Car-
rera Challenge takes a 62 point lead into the final round of the season over Heimgartner, with Alex Davison a further 30 points behind. Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will head to the streets of Surfers Paradise for the final round of the season in two weeks time, which will also be the final round in which the first generation 991 series 911 GT3 Cup cars will be used in the one-make championship.

Howick Pakuranga wins first match of season The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premiers have begun the season strongly with a nine wicket win against Birkenhead who was dismissed for 93 in their season opener. Birkenhead won the toss at Lloyd Elsmore and surprised everybody by electing to bat first early. This appeared to be a good decision as the wicket seemed to hold few terrors for the Birkenhead opening pair who raced through to 20 in only four overs. However Danru Ferns made a double break through and apart from a stand of 40 runs for the fifth wicket the visitors resistance crumbled in the face of accurate HPCC bowling. Matt McEwan took the middle out the innings with 3/19 and Rudi Botadra followed up with 3/16. Jamie Brown, back from a year in Christchurch and a yard quicker in pace took 1/11 of his six overs. Howick Pakuranga made short work of the 94 runs required to

win scoring the winning total in only fifteen overs. Sam Borland got the side off to a great start with a swashbuckling 27 and then fellow opener Daniel Young increased his scoring rate to steer the side through, in partnership with Dale Phillips, ending the day on 44 not out off 39 balls. New coach Ben Williams commented that he was pleased with the professional manner the side went about its business and picked out Matt McEwan’s 3/19 off 10 overs and Daniel Young’s composed innings standing out in a complete team performance. Next week the Marie Raos HPCC Premiers are away to University in what promises to be a tough task.
