n arsonist started the fire that consumed a Flat Bush house earmarked for demolition, officials believe. Fire fighters were called to the vacant property – which is illegally used as a rubbish dumping site – on Flat Bush School Road at 3.39pm on Saturday afternoon. Senior fire risk management officer for Counties Manukau, Robert Watson, who attended the scene, says the blaze had been
burning for some time before it was noticed. “It’s been vacant and unoccupied so the site’s been used for dumping. There’s a lot of rubbish there and somebody’s lit it. It’s a deliberately lit fire.” Mr Watson says it was a very destructive fire that could not have been caused by a derelict site with no electrical or heating sources. There are other buildings in the area scheduled to be cleared for new housing and being illegally
used as dumping sites. It is not the first abandoned house fire Mr Watson has attended in the vicinity but the first in recent times. In this case, the house was completely destroyed, Mr Watson says. “It made life for demolition crew easy. It was a large two storey house. The upper half was completely gone and half of the ground level was burnt. The fire had spread to surrounding trees and grass.
A woman reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. Records indicated the ambulance had been stood down and that the woman had gone to the East Care Accident & Medical Clinic on Botany Road. Police say the fire is being treated as suspicious but further forensic testing is needed. People with information can contact detective sergeant Dean Batey on 250-3014 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.

By FARIDA MASTER Isn’t it too dangerous? It’s the first question people asked Bridget Dennison, the 17-year-old tramper who walked the Te Araroa trail for 45 days during the school holidays. The Howick College student suffered trials and tribulations on her 900km trek. She was almost swept away in the treacherous Taramakau river and was saved by a Swedish tramper; fell off a rock and landed on her backpack; was in great pain and cried her way through the first two days wondering why she had taken on the uphill task. But, she says, she wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. Two years ago, Bridget had never been tramping, much less out in the wild.

introduction to war. But we tend to drift over the Battles of Passchendaele and the Somme. “Passchendaele was a blood bath with 800 Kiwi men killed and 2750 wounded within the first hour. That’s a big portion of the population gone in one hour. “I’ve been there and seen the graves. Yet the battle field is just the equivalent to a couple of football fields. You see the nonsense in the world now and ask what was it all for?” ■■ The Bay of Moudros on the Greek Island of Lemnos was where the armistice between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies was signed in October 1918. The harbour was the Allied base for the blockade of the Dardanelles during World War I. Between 1915 and 1920 hundreds of dead soldiers from the Gallipoli campaign were buried in the Allied Cemetery on the nearby Portianou Peninsula. The cemetery contains 352 graves of British, French, Australian, New Zealand, Egyptian and Indian soldiers. Rest, training camps and hospitals were established on the peninsula which was also chosen as the command centre for the campaign by British leader Winston Churchill.

owick RSA is the beneficiary of a painting that was originally destined for a significant exhibition on the Greek Island of Lemnos. Eastern Beach painter, Merv Appleton was one of two Kiwis selected to submit paintings to the ‘In Red’ exhibition commemorating 100 years after the Gallipoli campaign. The other Kiwi painter was Sue MacDougall who has lived on the Greek Island of Aegina for many years. They were among 31 artists from Greece, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand to participate in the exhibition. It was held in the Municipal Gallery of Thessaloniki in April-May and at the old port Apothiki, on Lemos Island in June-July last year. Mr Appleton sent his painting The Rescue but did not finish the other one portraying a field ambulance loading injured soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign. This painting will now hang on a wall at the RSA’s Wellington Street clubrooms. RSA president, Ray Sangster says the donation of the painting is substantial. “It will take a prime spot in the clubrooms. We are very pleased to receive this

donation and thank Merv very much.” Mr Appleton says he was disappointed not to be able to go to the Lemnos exhibition in person. “Afterwards I was contacted and told my painting was sold and I thought ‘that’s cool’.” The exhibition organisers asked Mr Appleton for his bank account and tax details which he sent. While he was waiting for the money to be transferred to his bank account, he received another mes-
sage apologising because the Greek Government, in the throes of defaulting, wouldn’t allow the money to be transferred. “At the time Greece was broke,” Mr Appleton says. “I laughed it off and put it down to experience.” But two weeks later a courier parcel containing an exhibition catalogue book arrived. “I thought ‘that’s decent of them’. But the next thing money started dropping out of the book. “It was raining Euros,
brand new Euro notes and so I was paid. “I never mistrusted them,” he says. “I wrote it off as an experience and was more honoured that my painting got there.” Mr Appleton was close to binning his other painting but then decided to finish it and keep it. “The moment for the Gallipoli commemorations had been and gone. But currently it’s 100 years since the Battle of Passchendaele. We talk about Gallipoli because it was our

‘I walked 900km’ ➤➤From page 1
It was only after she discovered Outdoor Education at Howick College that Bridget – who lived most of her life in Taiwan till her family moved to New Zealand – took on the challenge of trekking the breathtaking Te Araroa trail. Last year she walked the Queen Charlotte track in Marlborough Sounds with her family and discovered her love for tramping. When she learnt of the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, meaning the Long Pathway, that winds through farmlands, alpine passes, clear rivers, thick rainforest and bleached beaches, she knew she had to take it on. The trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff has been described as one of the best places for a long walk on the planet. Bridget brushes aside concerns of it being dangerous saying “unless you do something silly yourself! Besides, you meet so many people along the trail and make friends from different countries,” she says. “They warn you if the river is dangerous or what to watch out for. It also gives you so much time to think.” Interestingly, the young hiker believes that there was one common theme that helped random trampers bond. “We were all in pain,” she says about the first 10 days. She couldn’t even turn in her
sleep because every bone and muscle in her body ached. “Gradually your body gets stronger and you learn to walk faster,” she says. “That was at the beginning of the journey. My backpack was really heavy then. I was carrying one third of my weight. I soon realised I had to get rid of the extra pans I was carrying,” smiles the adventurous young lady who gives credit to her outdoor education teacher David Mason and her parents for the life-changing trail. Mr Mason, Bridget’s Year 12 and 13 outdoor education teacher says: “Bridget has been an inspiration to many other students. Only two years in New Zealand after growing up in Taiwan, her tramping experience was limited to a family tramp and a few she did in Year 12. “She dared to dream that her solo walking of Te Araroa was possible and did all the research and planning herself. “She also did a three-day solo practice tramp in the Whirinaki Forest. Bridget engaged with many people from many different walks of life, tramped up to 40km a day with a 20kg pack,” he said. “Most importantly, she has learnt so much about herself and others – that’s real education. Her parents must take some credit for their support and the courage to let her push her boundaries.”

t’s not very often that you get a backdrop of a stunning Tamaki River to host a festival. The Tamaki River Festival on the weekend had loads of activities for children. There was plenty to do on the water, in the water and by the water as children had a go at sailing, kayaking, learnt more about the river and native skinks and geckos. There was also a raft race that had some adults have more fun than their kids! And then there were pirates. The travelling variety show of Captain Festus McBoyle and his talented motley crew who are masters of music and mischief, had the children captivated. The Rotary Club of Somerville were spotted selling burgers which some visitors described as the best in town! Times photos Wayne Martin

ick and East Tamaki covered by the new temporary post. Mr Gallagher says there are no preliminary results from the trial, which starts next month. “But our analysts anticipate a reduced response time to emergencies in South Auckland.” The number of incidents handled by the Howick station has not increased, he says. In July Mr Gallagher told the Times St John constantly monitored and reviewed incident locations and worked closely with the council to ensure safer communities, so that the organisation continued to meet demand as the region continued to grow. Asked if there is any indication of increased demand from the rapidly developing BotanyFlat Bush areas, Mr Gallagher says St John has not seen an increase.

three-month trial aimed at reducing St John’s response times has resulted in staff at the Botany Ambulance Station in Sir William Avenue, East Tamaki being transferred. But St John is yet to confirm a location for a temporary post. St John Auckland District operations manager Doug Gallagher says the organisation is working through a number of options. Four staff members were based at Sir William Avenue, involving two working together on one ambulance for 12 hours every day. “These staff will continue to crew their ambulance, however for the trial it will start and finish from Manukau Station and the East Tamaki area will be covered from the new temporary post, with the location yet to be confirmed.”
Last July Howick Local Board elected member Bob Wichman said lack of provision for a multi-use fire and ambulance emergency centre at the new Ormiston Town Centre left the whole community at risk because of the lack of emergency services. With rapid growth occurring and more forecast for the Botany/ Flat Bush area, the proximity of emergency services, he said, seemed to have been forgotten. At the time Mr Gallagher said Botany/Flat Bush was covered by a patient-centred deployment plan which enabled ambulances to be dispatched and coordinated rather than waiting in stations. Now the Botany station at Sir William Avenue is being transferred because St John says there are a lower number of incidents for East Tamaki. This leaves the south-east covered by the station in How-

Prestigious Jag makes debut

O
SLEEK CAR: Organiser of the Brit & Euro Car Show, Richard Waugh, right, shares admiring looks with Roger Munns who will enter his E-Type Jaguar in the show. Times photo Wayne Martin
ne of Roger Munns’ greatest thrills came 53 years ago when he was given the opportunity to drive Ray Archibald’s E-type Jaguar. Next month, he is expecting the same type of thrill when he shows his E-type at the inaugural Auckland Classic Brit & Euro Car Show at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. He will also revel in the coincidence of his car showcasing the identical opalescent gun metal grey paintwork and red upholstery as the one he drove all those years before. Mr Munns’ 1966 E-type Jaguar 4.2 Series 1 was imported by Mr Archibald who held the Jaguar agency in Christchurch. It was sold in 1967, did the car dealership circuit throughout New
Zealand and was bought by an Auckland man who owned it for 32 years. Mr Munns bought it from the man’s estate in 2006. “It was complete and unmolested,” he says. “But it was quite dilapidated as it was used as a working car.” Initially Mr Munns thought he would tidy the car up for his use. But when he discussed it with a painter they decided the car needed an extensive ‘do-up’ job. “I decided to pull it totally apart, down to its last nuts and bolts,” Mr Munns says. He rebuilt the motor and the paintwork and upholstery was upgraded true to its origin, down to the wire wheels sporting Pirelli radial tyres from Britain. “I had always had a love of cars,” Mr Munns says. “In 1958 I had a Standard Eight and tink-
ered then.” There were other cars between then and 1963 when he bought an MG which he raced and rallied in Christchurch. When the time for marriage and setting up a home came around, “I had to part with it”. But once his children grew up he tried to buy his MG back, only to discover it had been exported to Australia six months before. But the appeal of the Jaguar stayed with him, along with the drive of Ray Archibald’s E-type 2.8 Series 1. He is looking forward to lining up on show day with other professionally restored E-types. More than 400 cars have been entered. A special gesture is being made by the neighbouring Howick Historical Village which will offer a special gold coin entry to
the village on the day instead of its regular entry fees. Combined with free entry to the car show, Mr Waugh says the day will be appealing and accessible to people of all ages, especially families. “It will be very inclusive.” ■■ The Classic Brit & Euro Car Show will be held on March 6 at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Entry is free. Car enthusiasts are urged to enter their cars quickly as a site plan will be drawn soon. Entries can include famous classics, such as Mr Munns’ E-Type, to more modest, but interesting, old cars. Car enthusiasts can register online at www.briteurocarshow. nz. Mr Waugh can be contacted by phoning 533-9400 (pvt), 2739044 (bus), or email rjw@ecw. org.nz.

It’s a message that says ‘if you evade the court system, we’ll come looking for you’.” Another positive note has been burglaries across the district decreasing compared to the same period last year, Mr Pirrett says. “We’re having a good start to the year but we need to keep the pressure up on offenders
and get help from public securing vehicles and homes.” Mr Pirrett says there have been a number of cases where doors and windows have been left open due to the heat, providing easy target for opportunistic thieves. Meanwhile, the opportunities have ended for a Highland Park man who was arrested on Friday for a string of crimes committed locally. pecialising in good quality pre-loved clothing, jewellery, homeware and collectables in a boutique environment, the store in Rices Mall, Howick prides itself on being a bit quirky while offering great customer service in a unique atmosphere.
Manager Kim says the response has exceeded all expectations. “We are all so proud and love hearing from shoppers how much they like the store and, of course, all the great clothes! “We would never have been able to make it a success without our wonderful team of dedicated volunteers who are all very passionate about making it a success and raising vital funds for such a great cause.” Money raised from the store helps provide support and information for people with cancer and their families. Kim goes on to say that it’s heartening to see that more and more people are choosing to recycle clothing. “It’s really rewarding that in a consumer society like ours people are looking for alternatives to the higher priced chain stores. “In fact, buying good quality pre-loved goods can offer a real saving for the average household budget. Statistics NZ figures tell us that an average household spends $1600 per year on clothing and footwear
which is phenomenal!” On the flip side, it’s the perfect solution for helping people declutter and start new wardrobes afresh. “What do you do with all items that you no longer need? Why donate them of course!” says Kim. “Take a look at your wardrobe and be honest, how many clothes crammed onto hangers have you actually worn in the last year? “If you’re anything like me there are always a few items lurking that are the wrong fit, colour or simply out of season and
by donating you are passing on the love.” Shoppers can also enjoy the benefits of the Pre-loved Club which offers loyal customers rewards for shopping as well as regular newsletters and updates via social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Healthy start to the year
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany
I
t was great to see so many people at the Botany Summer BBQ this weekend. My team and I had a fun time putting it on, and we enjoyed seeing so many happy kids and families at the event. It will be good to see more Botany locals and families at our next BBQ in February 2017. I want to share some of the progress we are making in assisting families in the area of health. We all know when kids are healthy and active they are better equipped to succeed at school. That’s why the Government is committed to giving children the best possible start in life. Around 780,000 children under-13 are benefitting from free GP visits and prescriptions thanks to the $90 million invested over three years in Budget 2014. Latest figures show the rates of children under-13 visiting their GP is 23 per cent higher when compared to the same quarter last year. So far 99 per cent of GPs around New Zealand are offering free GP visits for under-13s. With more children starting school for the first time this year, we’re already on track to exceed last year’s B4 School Checks numbers. In 2014/15 the programme reached a record 92 per cent,

that’s over 58,000 pre-schoolers across the country – the highest rate since the programme began back in 2008. It’s been particularly encouraging to see an increase for Maori and Pacific four-yearolds with 87 per cent of Maori children and 88 per cent of Pacific children getting their B4 School Check last year. The B4 School Check includes hearing, eyesight, height, weight, and oral health assessments, as well as comprehensive health and development questionnaires. Checks are provided free through a range of community
health services. On 1 July a new childhood obesity health target will come into force. Under the target, 95 per cent of children identified as obese in the B4 School Check will be referred to a health professional for assessment and family based nutrition, activity, and lifestyle interventions. The health target is one of 22 initiatives which form part of the Childhood Obesity Plan. There is a lot happening to help keep children healthy and fit for when they start school. See you at our BBQ next year.

After medical assessment, Mr Tantau was diagnosed with a fractured right ankle as well as heavy bruising and a sprain. The sole breadwinner of the family has had the sports bike for nearly two years and will be left $400 out of pocket to pay for insurance excess. The incident has left the family in shock. “For someone to flee the scene is really hurtful and upsetting,” Ms Datt says.

the brake fluid was going all over the bike and the road.” In his shock, Mr Tantau gave the wrong street name and, as a result, no one came to the scene immediately. The 39-year-old father of three then called his wife, Reena Datt, who came as soon as she could. “My heart just dropped,” says Ms Datt. “You just think the worst things when you hear about people coming off bikes. It’s shocking. He’s walked away with minor injuries but what if it wasn’t? The motorbike can be replaced but not his life.”

motorcyclist hit by a car early Friday morning has been left with a broken bike and badly injured ankle. Lewis Tantau was travelling to work in Highbrook on Cryers Road around 5.45am when a car heading towards him turned right into Neales Road. Mr Tantau says he was aware of the vehicle and was second judging himself as most motorcyle riders do. “Next moment I knew the vehicle was still turning into the road and took me out. My leg got caught between the vehicle and my bike.” The Mellons Bay resident described the impact to his right hand side as a “pretty loud thump”. “It was a good hit. I was doing 50 km/h and to directly hit me on the side of my bike, I was quite lucky actually.” The driver allegedly left the scene. The lighting was poor in that area and it was still dark at that time of day so Mr Tantau could not describe the car except that it’s a sedan. However, the damage on his motorbike left white paint. Mr Tantau managed to get his red Hyosung sports motorcycle to the side of the road while he rang for help. “The bike was billowing out with smoke. The brake line had come off the bike, the foot peg, the exhaust was smashed,

uits and ties will be swapped for trainers and shorts as the corporate crowd come together for a fun event in their own backyard. The Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run/ Walk will kick off at 5.20pm on Wednesday, February 24, at Highbrook Business Park. The third annual charity event organised by Highbrook Rotary raises funds for the Middlemore Foundation and is open to all businesses, groups and individuals in the Highbrook and neighbouring areas. ANZ Highbrook bank senior relationship manager Sarah Pattison will be taking part for the third time. Mrs Pattison says although she’s not really a runner, she enjoys the social aspect. “The whole team gets involved and it’s nice to be part of a team.” Mrs Pattison says the health and charity elements add to the feel-good factor. ANZ hosts a barbecue afterwards for clients, staff and other business contacts and it is also a chance to network. Waipuna group sales and marketing director Daron Gray says the company has been supporting the event since the beginning and enters a team each year. “The Middlemore Foun-

tion to Kidz First Children’s Hospital and a vote of confidence. “We have also had patients in recovery and exercise programmes take part, and the encouragement they get from all involved, well, how do you put a value on that?” Mr Kemeys says the
Goodman Property buys in GI Goodman (NZ), the manager of Goodman Property Trust (GMT), has bought a multitenanted industrial property in Glen Innes for $30.3 million. GMT, which owns Highbrook Business Park, is New Zealand’s leading industrial and business space provider. It has a substantial property portfolio
with a value of more than $2.1 billion that accommodates more than 250 customers. The newly-acquired property, at 127-131 Pilkington Road, is adjacent to the eastern railway line in an area designated by Auckland Council for high density redevelopment. The 5.8 hectare site currently provides 20,400sqm of

It is also positioned to benefit from the new AMETI transport initiative. “There is immediate opportunity to add value with longer term options provided.”

News bites Drones still missing Police are still looking for a man after $30,000 worth of drones were stolen from an East Tamaki warehouse last November. The theft occurred on November 27 at the Hobby Station warehouse on East Tamaki Road. Sky-Hero brand commercial drones as well as a one-of-a-kind drone used for fishing were taken. People with information can call sergeant John Roberts of Counties Manukau Police on 250-2809.
Pedestrian hit by car An elderly man was struck by a vehicle in Eastern Beach last Friday morning during peak traffic. Police, fire and St John ambulance paramedics were called to Bucklands Beach Road at about 8.30am. A 70-year-old man suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Middlemore Hospital. The female driver had minor injuries. Police said the matter is under investigation.
Teens clash in Botany A fight broke out between two groups of teenagers at Botany Town Centre on Friday evening, leaving a trail of injuries. As a result of the fight on the upper level car park near Farmers, four youths suffered injuries ranging from minor to as serious as a broken jaw. Police are following positive lines of inquiry including speaking to those involved and gathering CCTV footage.
A tale of two cities By Marianne Kelly
G
allant is not necessarily a word often used these days, but it is a good fit for Rebecca Roberts when describing the Chinese school students she has just spent a month teaching. “If it was raining, the young men carried an umbrella for me, not something we generally see in our Kiwi kids,” she says. The Howick College head of hospitality returned from a month in China just before Christmas where she engaged in conversational English lessons and promoted Howick College and New Zealand to junior students and 26 young people who will pursue their studies at Howick College in 2016. She visited schools in Nanjing, a city of eight million people, and Nantong (five million) - two major cities on the east coast inland from Shanghai where Howick College has sister school relationships. Ms Roberts says she was unprepared for the fact that Westerners were not prevalent on the city streets. “I saw them taking selfies aimed at me, random photographs,” she says. “Everyone was so friendly, but I was an anomaly. They were so interested in New Zealand. When I showed them pictures of Howick’s main street with the blue sky and little traffic, there were

gasps.” With her command of the Chinese language extremely limited, Ms Roberts says she was fortunate to have three assistants to help with teaching, living arrangements and travel. “I was so grateful to have them. It is an alien environment for a non-Chinese speaker, a mass of humanity and a full-on environment. Nothing, such as the signs and language used, is recognisable.” Ms Robert’s job was to describe the experience of attending school at Howick College and living in New Zealand. The programme allowed the students to listen to native English compared with Chinese-spoken English. It was a chance for them to learn about
Howick College and New Zealand’s education system and the differences they would come up against. “They were amazed that we can drink water from the taps, that water is not endless and cheap so we have to limit showers, the different foods they were likely to come up against,” Ms Roberts says. “I told them about how to get around Howick and the fact that there is no metro or trains or a bus every three minutes, and how to get involved in the school and community activities.” Ms Roberts also spoke with parents of the students coming to Howick College next year who, she says, were incredibly brave. “They are sending their
kids out of a structured and competitive environment to a country on the other side of the world where they have no control and don’t know the system. “But we are giving them an entree to the world. Kids in China are the most hardworking, driven and focused. They have long school days, with some starting at 7am and not getting home until 9pm, and then three to four hours homework. They were innocent and unsophisticated, “but charmingly so,” she says. “They were not malicious or difficult. They could be cheeky, naughty and talkative, and they liked their video games. But they had an underlying innocence, they were charming kids.” Having some education in New Zealand, she says, will give them a good foundation with the knowledge repeatable to be applied to their life situation. “And they will do it in a clean and fresh environment. The pollution in Nanjing was fairly grim. You could taste it and feel breathing it in. I didn’t see any stars there which makes you appreciate how lucky we are. “They will get an opportunity in New Zealand to branch out and get a feel of their whole being, not just their education. It’s about being a good global citizen and we, in New Zealand, are good at that.”

The Barrel Inn’s Triple Treat teasers on Mondays and Tuesdays are just the ticket for banishing the doom and gloom of the week – a hearty main, dessert and a drink for just $28. Then Thursdays are equally tempting with a hunk of juicy Angus scotch steak and a drink for $25 - even leprechauns will be salivating at the sight. Hospitable, generous and full of Irish cheer, this thriving venue is a hit with large gatherings and celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries. No matter the occasion, the Barrel Inn is sure to put on a good show. And with St Paddy’s Day just under a month away, the good Irish stock will be throwing a party like no other! Spring out the shamrocks, come garbed in the best green finery, and be prepared for an annual celebration like no other this St Patrick’s Day on March 17. “We love the vibe in Howick and try and be as involved as we can,” says Clive. “So that’s why we’ve always supported the Times. We’re at the heart of the community and they’re the voice of the community – it’s the ideal match.”

It could inspire fond memories of the person who wore it before you and you may have thought about one day passing it on to future generations. But how do you make an heirloom piece your own? Chris Schweder from Village Jeweller says: “If you want to honour the memory of the original piece, but it just doesn’t suit your style, or doesn’t fit well, redesigning is always an option.” Granddad’s wedding band may not work for a granddaughter but it could be remodeled to make something that is cherished by the new wearer. One new piece can be made from several items and technical issues can be overcome.

◗ One (of many) common legends dealing with the origins of the Chinese Lantern Festival speaks of a beautiful crane that flew down to earth from heaven. After it landed on earth it was hunted and killed by some villagers. This angered the Jade Emperor in heaven because the crane was his favorite. So, he planned a storm of fire to destroy the village on the fifteenth lunar day. The Jade Emperor’s daughter warned the inhabitants of her father’s plan to destroy their village. The village was in turmoil because nobody knew how they could escape their imminent destruction. However, a wise man from another village suggested that every family should hang red lanterns around their houses, set up bonfires on the streets, and explode firecrackers on the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth lunar days. This would give the village the appearance of being on fire to the Jade Emperor. On the fifteenth lunar day, troops sent down from heaven whose mission was to destroy the village saw that the village was already ablaze, and returned to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor. Satisfied, the Jade Emperor decided not to burn down the village. From that day on, people celebrate the anniversary on the fifteenth lunar day every year by carrying lanterns on the streets and exploding firecrackers and fireworks.

For example, it is possible to melt together 9 and 18 carat gold but the final piece can’t be stamped with the carat rating because it is not possible to clearly identify this. But what if you want to create a new family heirloom? With a dedication to craftsmanship, Village Jeweller can design, or find, a piece that will become an enduring reminder of a significant moment in time. “We can help you discover beautiful accessories to be enjoyed throughout generations and that tell your story,” says Chris. The highly skilled team can reinvent, repair, and care for existing pieces, as well as offering advice on selecting the perfect piece for every occasion. “We believe beautiful jewellery should be attainable for everyone and we look forward to helping you create your own piece of history with your own style.” Village Jeweller 98 Picton Street, Howick Ph 09 534 7404 www.villagejeweller.co.nz

here’s a pot of gold waiting to be discovered for those who haven’t ventured past the rainbow of Cook Street in Howick. The long-standing Barrel Inn establishment has been the purveyor of merry times for revellers, diners, sports fans, music aficionados, Irish pub-goers and local families for more than a decade. And since hosts Clive and Jenni Thomson took over nearly three years ago, the spark and good ol’ Irish luck seems to be rolling in by the barrelful. Clive is an old hand when it comes to the hospitality industry and has perfected a winning formula that continues to serve the venue well. A jovial atmosphere greets regulars every night of the week whether it’s the weekly pub quiz, live music Fridays, Sunday roasts or major sports events. All the best and latest races, tournaments, matches and games play live on the big screen and the crowd goes simply wild, adding to the excitement and thrill of watching. Known also for its epic Car & Bike Displays, this well-loved local haunt is as full of character as the oldest vintage ride there is around.

In an attempt to share their rich and ancient culture, the Howick Local Board along with the Pakuranga Chinese Association and the Asian Council on Reducing Crime, have extended a warm welcome to every other community in the area to be a part of the Lunar New Year beach party on Saturday, February 20. To be held at Cockle Bay from 7-9pm, the celebration on the beach is tipped to be a fun filled occasion packed with cultural performances, games and plenty to feast on. Entry is free. The beach party is part of the Lantern festival that is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month in the lunar calendar, marking the last day of the lunar New Year celebration. Interestingly, the Lantern festival is associated with Valentine’s Day in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Northern China. “It was the only time when young girls stepped out of their homes to join in the festivities and got an opportunity to meet young men and talk to them,” says Te Wananga tutor Thomas Chan. “The lanterns have riddles pasted on them. The traditional red lanterns which are synonymous with Chinese culture worldwide symbolise prosperity and good fortune. Another tradition on the Chinese version of St. Valentine’s Day in Singapore and Malaysia would have single women writing their contact details on oranges and throwing them into the river. The custom involved eligible young men trying to fish out as many oranges downstream and eating them. The taste of the oranges would point towards the direction of finding true, sweet love. That is, provided the oranges were sweet and not sour!

I wish to complain about the prices charged by the vet on a public holiday (Auckland Anniversary). Our cat got sick and had to be put down over the long weekend. We ended up at the Manukau After Hours Veterinary Clinic. They just moved from Great South Road to Jack Conway Avenue. We were charged $202 for our cat to be put down. I find it a bit much for pensioners to pay that. I expected to pay $100. We’ve had to go without money this week. We’ve got nothing left. We only had $188 on us so we still owe money. We had the cat 17 years. The injection was just $35 and GST $25.53. Kay Riddle Papatoetoe Vet’s reply: Veterinary treatment can be expensive, especially when your pet needs emergency care at night or on public holidays. The Manukau After Hours Vet Clinic is sympathetic to the financial pressure that pet owners often find themselves in when a pet requires urgent care. For this reason we review our prices regularly and attempt to strike a balance between affordability and the financial costs of staffing and operating a veterinary hospi-

Waitangi Day in London A group of us Kiwis attended the annual Waitangi pub crawl in London on Saturday, February 7. It is a big event here - a day of drinking, dressing up and walking the streets of London. There is always a great turnout of Kiwis and Londoners alike. Even the police are on board as we have a good reputation of never tal that is only open at night, weekends and public holidays. Obviously, day-time veterinary clinics are able to charge less for services and are better placed to help their regular bona fide clients with managing costs. While we are unable to offer discounted services, we
giving them any trouble. The pub crawl finishes off with a haka at the Old Palace Yard at around 4pm. It is truly a fun and friendly day out celebrating Waitangi Day. My friends and I dressed up as the NZ dance group featuring in the Justin Bieber music video Sorry. Bianca Brunschwiler London (ex Howick) do have a range of finance options available and encourage any owners who have concerns about their pets’ treatment or costs to contact the clinic or their referring vet. Nick Meyer’s light rail proposal for east Auckland (Times, January 28) is right on the mark and is definitely needed – and now, not in 30 years’ time. East Auckland is a forgotten part of Auckland when it comes to transport. There are no motorways, busways or railways. Just congested arterial roads plagued with traffic lights. With Auckland Transport now proposing light rail for Central Auckland instead of buses, the same should be applied to east Auckland rather than new busways. Light rail is much more complementary to the urban environment and Mayor Len Brown and any forthcoming mayoral candidates should support and advocate for a light rail system for east Auckland. The three main multi-lane arterial roads in east Auckland – Pakuranga Road, Ti Rakau Drive and Te Irirangi Drive - need to have two traffic lanes converted to light rail lines to operate a Botany loop line from Panmure to Manukau and a Howick branch line from Pakuranga. Light rail can carry more people, more quickly, quietly and cleanly and is what South-East Auckland needs. Isaac Broome Pukekohe

Zoom in to ‘Howick Hilton’
ADVERTORIAL SC3682A
T
he finish line is in sight as there are just five new serviced apartments left in Howick’s premier retirement village. Affectionately dubbed the “Howick Hilton”, the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village in Chapel Road has come a long way since the foundations were laid about three years ago. What was once a construction site is now a thriving social hub with more than 400 residents and a host of facilities to sustain the dream lifestyle. Now with just five serviced apartments left, the race is on for locals to stake a claim in this slice of paradise. They consist of three onebedroom apartments and two studios featuring: • kitchenette with fridge and microwave
• ensuite bathroom • emergency call bell system • balcony or patio with garden access • parking if required • ceiling fan • drapes and carpet • built-in wardrobe • bathroom underfloor heating • wall heaters “Serviced apartments are great because they offer assisted living while still retaining your independence in your own apartment,” says sales advisor Catherine Booth. “Residents have the option of tailoring the level of assistance they need so they have time to enjoy the better things in life. However, people need to act now if they want to take advantage of the early bird special”, says Catherine. Another bonus is the smooth, no-hassle transition.
“We’re probably the only ones in the real estate industry to offer such a flexible sale process. Buyers can move in after paying a deposit and have 90 days to settle, making it easier for them to sell their existing homes,” says Catherine. To help new residents get settled, staff members offer a complimentary service to help with tasks such as furniture placement, decorations, and mounting television sets. Once settled in, all residents have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the many facilities on offer including an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, bowling green, cinema, billiards room and library. Surrounded by a peaceful suburban setting, the 3.5 hectare site houses extensive resthome, hospital and dementia care facilities which are designed to accommodate the changing needs of residents.
Green manicured spaces and lovely, light courtyards give residents a chance to sit and reflect, and there is something calming about the ‘mini-lake’ complete with fountain and waterfall which is also used for miniature boat sailing. Chores are taken care of with regular garden maintenance, house-cleaning and fresh linen weekly, fresh towels daily and cooked meals. Daily morning and afternoon tea is also part of the service. “It’s all stress-free, low-maintenance, and secure. What more could you ask for?” says Catherine. In fact, most retirees who have pre-conceived notions of what life is like at Bruce McLaren are often pleasantly surprised when they experience the lifestyle for themselves.
“Our respite service is a great way of trying before you buy,” says Catherine. “We had a lady whose family went overseas and didn’t want her to be alone, so she came in on respite care for a month. “When her holiday drew to an end she didn’t want to leave! She’s now bought an apartment and is absolutely loving it.” Developed by experienced provider Ryman Healthcare, the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village is setting a new record for luxury living in an idyllic setting. To find out more about this perfect opportunity, contact sales advisor Catherine Booth on 09 535 0225 or see it for yourself at: Bruce McLaren Retirement Village 795 Chapel Rd, Howick www.brucemclarenvillage.co.nz

oes your dining room decor date back to the dark ages? The outdated colours and accessories are no longer appealing or appetising? You’ll be surprised how easy it is to breathe new life into this room. Get out the brushes and rollers and give a boost to gloomy looking walls. Be daring and paint them a bright colour to liven up the decor. Not sure which colour to choose? Consult a professional decorator. If walls are damaged, look into textured coatings. Besides giving a distinctive look to walls, they conceal small imperfections. Apply them with a plastic tool, which is easier to handle than a metal one. If your dining room doesn’t have dimmers on the light fixtures, invest in some as soon as possible. Go wild if you’d like an original light fixture. But be warned – call in a professional for any electrical work. If the fabric seats of your chairs are damaged, buy some pretty fab-

Elegant grey beauty for growing family Makeover projects can be a little stressful but when a Somerville couple decided to embark on revamping their home last year, they knew it was for the best.
A busy household with growing demands needs a kitchen to keep up the pace. Jag Kitchens was quick to act, creating a contemporary new space with looks to kill.
“It’s amazing. It really is perfect and there was no hassle involved. We couldn’t be happier,” says Clare. Left, Liz Martin of Jag Kitchens with Clare Hendricks. Times photo Wayne Martin
Jag Kitchens specialises in custom-designed kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a stateof-the-art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.
With two young boys to feed and a baby on the way, the Hendricks needed a kitchen that would fit around and enhance their family life. When it came to dream kitchens, Clare always admired her mum’s black and white kitchen which had been installed with the help of designer Liz Martin from Jag Kitchens. “My parents had their kitchen and laundry done by Jag and I remember being in awe of how good it looked. “And it still looks brand new!” So, when the time was right, Clare headed to the Jag Kitchens showroom in Botany’s Danske Mobler Centre to start the process with Liz.
The kitchen debuted last Christmas to a crowd of 18 and the Hendricks entertained without a hitch. Even the boys, aged five and two, who were initially unsure about the kitchen, were pretty impressed with the new addition to their home.
Clare and Warren Hendricks had lived in their home for six years and whilst it was picture perfect, the living area, particularly the kitchen, had always been one of their bugbears. “It was too old, too retro, and everything was falling to pieces,” says Clare.
to it,” says Clare.
Liz says it was a matter of making the most use of the space and blending it with the existing environment. “We set out to create a spacious kitchen that flowed to the living room seamlessly.” With some input from Clare’s mum and some inspiration borrowed from a neighbour’s kitchen, the new space is a sight to behold. A thick bench top with a light grey marbled effect matched with textured, slate-toned cabinetry is the very epitome of
modern design. Floating shelves displaying various ornaments and turquoise accents provide interest as do glossy white subway tiles functioning as a splashback. An on-bench pantry for all the “baby stuff” ensures easy
access and a matte black sink adds extra pizzazz. What’s more, the entire kitchen is functional as well as pleasing to the eye. “I can pull everything out from the dishwasher now and it’s so convenient to put things away with all the drawers right next

All Blacks for Halbergs I LET’S DANCE: Red Dance Studio’s Rebels onstage at the Showcase National Competition in the Gold Coast. Gemma Whitford-Joynt is in the centre. Photo supplied
Trouping the colour By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Howick hip hop crews are painting the town red with their new dance moves. Red Dance Studio’s four troupes are in the limelight after attending their first international dance competition in Australia in January. At the Showcase National Competition in the Gold Coast, the four crews Rebels, Revolution, Risk, and Relentless took to the stage after weeks of intense training and preparation with their new choreographer Shyvon Campbell from The Palace Dance Studio. Competing against 25 other crews senior’s Relentless took sixth place, a proud achievement for 16-yearold member Emma Flack. “We were quite happy with that because it was out of 25 other crews so we were proud of ourselves with all the training we did as well,” she said. The Howick College student, who has been dancing since the age of five, said it
was an exciting experience to compete outside of New Zealand. “It was really fun to go with the four crews but it was quite scary not knowing who we were going up against.” Junior crew Rebels, which 10-year-old Gemma WhitfordJoynt is a member of, fought off nerves to take fifth place along while Revolution also placed fifth. Risk missed out on a placing but earned a gold award. Competing for the first time internationally was a big step for the girls who usually dance in smaller local competitions. Working with Shyvon Campbell, who dances in Paris Goebel’s crew ReQuest and who features in Justin Bieber’s infamous music video “Sorry”, was a “crazy” experience. “She choreographs them herself and man, the first time we saw them it was incredible,” Emma said. Red Studio’s managing director Kiri Whitford-Joynt was amazed by the girls’ work ethic and commitment.
t’s my guess the All Blacks World Cup triumph will secure them both the supreme and team prizes at tonight’s Halberg Awards in Auckland. But there are some absolutely brilliant contenders, most notably sensational rowers Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke and, for the individual award, golfer Lydia Ko, cricketer Kane Williamson, kayaker Lisa Carrington, rugby star Dan Carter and cyclist Linda Villumsen. All but Williamson are world champions and he was ranked the world’s best test batsman before Australian captain Steve Smith climbed back to the top. Although they lost the Rugby Championship to Australia, the All Blacks scored an emphatic win against them at Eden Park before climaxing a great World Cup by beating them in the final at Twickenham. Carter was named International Rugby Player of the Year for his outstanding performance in the playoffs although NZ Rugby Player winner Ma’a Nonu was far more consistent throughout the season. In defending their world crown in London upon securing it in Auckland in 2011, the All Blacks became the first team to do so and also the first to win three titles, having claimed the first in 1987.

Although having to fight hard to overcome the Springboks 20-18 in the semi-final, they played some magnificent rugby, most notably in their quarterfinal thrashing of France when they surpassed 60 points. Few would bet against Steve Hansen being named Halberg Coach of the Year. The delightful Lydia Ko once again remains a major contender, especially in a year when, at 18, she became the youngest woman in world golf to win a major. Supremely gifted and blessed with an amazing temperament, she has a delightful personality that endears her to everyone. That is also true of kayaker Lisa Carrington who continues to dominate her sport and remains a favourite to defend her Olympic gold at Rio. With Peter Burling and Blair Tuke having secured a fourth world 49er title in Florida, few can now dispute Grant Dalton’s decision to promote Burling as skipper of Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup challenge ahead of Dean Barker. The popular Barker has his supporters, but nothing like the winning record of Burling, whose combination with Tuke includes an incredible 24 regattas since scoring a 2012 London Olympic Games silver medal behind Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen.
Agnew’s Angle While the Aussies were top dog then, the worm has turned dramatically with the Kiwis winning their latest world crown by a massive 43 points in coping with a wide range of conditions. Outstanding as Burling and Tuke’s record is, they still have a long way to go to emulate champion rowers Bond and Murray who have maintained their unbeaten streak since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Meanwhile full marks to Australia for bouncing back from their ODI series defeat to decisively beat the Black Caps in the first test at the Basin Reserve. While New Zealand fans had cause to be distraught at umpire Richard Illingworth’s blunder in calling a no ball against Doug Bracewell which castled Adam Voges stumps early in his innings, there can be no doubt the better team won. Sure Voges did go on to score a demoralising 239, but few could argue against an Aussie win by an innings and 52 runs. Clearly the better team won. All Blacks are hot favourites P27
Premiers make history The Howick Premier Women’s team made history for the Howick Softball Club over Waitangi Weekend. Competing in the Doreen Hutchings Annual Tournament, hosted by the Marist Softball Club at Simson Park, the premier women’s team went through undefeated to make their first ever final. In the decider against Mt Albert Ramblers, Howick went down 3-2, a disappointing end for the team. Howick player Marissa Berkes earned the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament. The premier men’s team, who also competed on Waitangi Weekend at Simson Park, did not have as much success in the Brother Patrick Tournament. Younger players Harrison Valk, Seth Gibson and Huw Davies all stepped up for the opportunity to play in the team as well as U19 pitcher Brodie Boyce from Counties. With top pitcher Campbell Gibson still trying to find his form after coming back to play after Christmas, the team is still finding their feet. Coaches Fred Craigie and Wayne Whittle have said there will be some time needed to ensure the team reach their full potential.

he Temperzone Junior Black Sox named a 17-man squad this month, featuring two Howick boys. Harrison Valk, 16, and Daniel Chapman, 18, will travel with the team to Michigan, USA in July to compete in the Under 19 Men’s World Championships. Both Valk and Chapman represented the Auckland U19 team that won the Under 19 National Championships at Rosedale Park in January. Valk currently plays for the Howick Softball Club with the Howick U17 boy’s team, the premier reserves and premier men’s teams. The 16-year-old also attended the Under 17 Nationals in Christchurch with the Auckland U17 Boys team where he was named one of the top three batters along with Howick boys Huw Davies and Seth Gibson, who was also a member of the Auckland U19

B team. Chapman, a former Pakuranga College student, was named top pitcher of the Under 19 National Championships and was named in the Under 19 tournament team. The Junior Black Sox will start the year with a series of
events, including a four-day buildup tour of Ashland, Ohio in early July, where they will play several games before the World Championships later that month. Head coach Thomas Makea says he is pleased with the team’s performance so far.
“Team players have been in good shape throughout the national age grade representative tournaments; furthermore, they have stepped up and out performed in some of the country’s top men’s club tournaments. “As a team, we need to be ready for whatever is thrown at us. We are expecting another strong showing from current world champions Argentina and also hosts USA, who has seven returning from their last campaign,” Makea says. The Softball New Zealand president Lyn Lockhard proudly announces the Temperzone New Zealand Junior Black Sox team: Daniel Chapman, Joseph Kohlhase, Jarome McKenzie, Jordan Tahana, Harrison Valk, Callum Bishop, Bailey Hamilton, Reilly Makea, Jackson Watt, Adom Woon, Jacob Zurcher, Kaleb Rona, Zachary Boyd, Alex Lundon, Samuel Marley, Dante Matakatea, Jayden Stratford.
