In memory of a special man By Laura Brookes

A

memorial service held for Koro Percy Reedy on April 13 brimmed with colleagues, family and friends gathered under one roof to exchange fond memories, laughter and tears. Mr Reedy, who worked as a kaumatua at Stand Children’s Services (formerly Pakuranga Health Camp) and was highly regarded by the local community, passed away on March 21 at the age of 75. He was remembered at the service for his ability to transcend cultures and ages and make the people around him feel truly

valued. “He made himself wellknown with his singing,” said former Stand kaumatua Uncle George Taipari, and commented on how the now-vacant role previously held by Mr Reedy will be a tricky one to fill. “When we met him, we thought, we need someone like him... he was such a unique man.” Regional Manager of Stand Children’s Services Auckland, Pene Frost, spoke at the service of Mr Reedy’s kind character and gift for putting people at ease. “He provided people with a sense of safety... and took his own brand of sunshine

into resthomes. Through music and humour, Koro Percy encouraged people to relax.”

Members of Mr Reedy’s family, including his partner, daughter and sonin-law, also spoke at the service, paying tribute to the man they remembered as “helpful, kind and generous” with a caring heart and an unwavering passion for people. ■■ Stand Children’s Services would like to thank everyone for turning out on such a blustering day to stand together to honour and celebrate the life of a very special man. The family also sincerely appreciated the kind words and support of the public who turned up to pay their respects.

She recalled Mr Reedy’s habit of asking slightly offtopic interview questions when hiring new staff, such as who was going to win the rugby and whether the candidate could sing, owned a boat, or liked fishing. Stand operations manager and nephew of Mr Reedy, Tauha Te Kani, was the MC for the service, and paid tribute to his uncle’s knack for pushing the boundaries with the power of his cheeky grin. “I struggle to think about Uncle Percy without laughing. He was a man that in my experience would do things other people would never do and get away with it,” he joked.

Elim Junior Campus teacher Emily Bagrie is determined to teach kids how to make the best of technology in their learning, and now, she’s being recognised for it by tech giant Apple. The 29-year-old teacher has just been awarded the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) award for her use of Apple products in class and invited to join the prestigious Apple

Distinguished Educators (ADE) class of 2017. The opportunity includes the chance to collaborate with more than 2,500 educators around the globe to improve Apple-based learning in classrooms. “I’m passionate about preparing kids for the future and preparing them to be the rulers of their technology, using it as a tool instead of technology ruling them,” she said. “It’s given me

the opportunity to grow as a teacher, and that’s because of Elim.” Mrs Bagrie started teaching at Elim in 2012 and was previously a student at the College, where she held the role of head girl in 2005. Elim Christian College principal Murray Burton said seeing students return as teachers is one of his favourite parts about the job. “It’s what I like best. There’s nothing better

than having students return and want to give back to the school they completed their education in. “It’s an amazing message to people that we are consistent and stand the test of time... we obviously appoint the best person for the job, [but] it’s an incredible vote of confidence for our culture to see students return wanting to teach, and Emily is such a great example of that.”

Thousands will gather throughout the district to mark Anzac Day next Tuesday. The biggest of the commemoration events will be the Anzac Day Dawn Parade on Stockade Hill. The parade will gather at Mellons Bay Road by the large pine tree at 5.45am and will march to Stockade Hill at 5.55am with the service beginning at 6.10am. It is expected to end at 6.30am. More than 2000 poppies, which were crafted in 2015, will again be planted in the remembrance gardens throughout the centre as part of the 102nd anniversary of the first major military action fought by New Zealand and Australian forces during the First World War. Meanwhile, the Beachlands and Maraetai Anzac Day Dawn Service is at 6am on Anzac Day at the RSA memorial at Sunkist Bay The cenotaph is mainly due to untiring efforts of returned serviceman John Harris who worked hard to ensure that locals had their own RSA memorial. It is located at one of the most picturesque spots in the area. “We have around 150 poppies we made last year and an additional 75 to go around the memorial that the children of Beachlands have made,” he said.

Fashion revolution inspires Blakeley By LAURA BROOKES

F

ashion Revolution Week kicks off this Monday and year 13 student Lauren Blakeley wants the world to know what the fuss is all about. The Elim Christian College student has spent the past term working on a research project concerning the social and environmental impacts of fast fashion – a term used by fashion retailers to express the quick movement of clothing items from the runway to the shops. Where items of clothing used to arrive fresh in store to remain for a whole season, they now remain in style for merely a few weeks before new clothes arrive. That’s the inspiration behind Fashion Revolution – a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry, and for a radical change in the

way clothes are sourced, produced and purchased. “Few people even know the meaning of fast fashion. We contribute to the issue by even not knowing the truth of the industry,” said Lauren. “I feel that Emma Watson put it perfectly: ‘You want what you’re wearing to say something about you, about who you are’. I don’t want to be wearing clothes that are causing environmental harm or forcing someone to work in inhumane conditions.” The #whomademyclothes campaign as part of Fashion Revolution Week starting April 24, marking the fourth anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where 1,138 people were killed in 2013. “I’m mind-blown by what I’ve discovered,” she said. “Machines aren’t just making our clothes – its people... but it’s also not limited to that. It’s damaging the

world.” She’s talking about places like Xintang in China – a village also known as Jean Town – where author Claire Press described how the rivers run blue, the air

stinks and the dust in the streets is blue. “We don’t see that side of fashion,” said Lauren. “We don’t see the lives it’s impacting or the places it’s damaging - we just see

Helping fund Howick public transport I’m very happy to be writing about our community’s new ferry pier at Half Moon Bay that opened last week with significant Government funding. On Friday, we were able to witness its official opening. Ferries are a growing part of how locals in Botany, Howick and Pakuranga travel in to Auckland CBD, and it is important for services to match this growing demand. This

significant upgrade for ferry passengers at the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal has been long in the making. I have long been a supporter of better ferry options in Half Moon Bay and I am proud to see the $2.75 million Government transport grant has made this happen. Our funding contribution makes the Government the single largest funding partner, through NZ Transport

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany Agency. I’d also like to thank Auckland Transport and Howick Local Board for their contributions towards the project. This ferry pier has been designed with the strongwesterly prevailing winds

in mind, to ensure that passengers enjoy more comfort and much less exposure to the strong winds. A ferry-bus hub in the near future will also ensure commuters and other marina users are separated, to improve passenger flows. This will make commuting to the CBD easier and faster with ferry and bus services at Half Moon Bay located in one area.

the nice cost on our end.” Now, the 17-year-old is calling for consumers to jump on board the revolution by supporting outlets that back fashion sustainability. “It’s not about telling all our favourite shops to close their doors, or telling them ‘you’re ruining the world’, but it’s about encouraging them to do better, and up their standards. “I’m not a perfect example of an ethical wardrobe but I’ve taken on the idea of buy less and buy better. For example, opshopping is a great way to know your money is going to a worthy cause.” She suggests consumers can make use of popular app ‘Good on You’ available for iOs and Android which provides sustainability ratings for various fashion stores. ■ Fashion Revolution Week runs from April 24-30.

earning a rest day with a side of optional golf. That’s then followed by 149km from Taupo to Matamata, 90km the next day as they travel onto Thames and a final 54km stretch to Coromandel before catching a ferry over to Auckland to enjoy the final test match between the Lions and All Blacks. Despite none of the group covering that much distance on a bike before, they all agree they took it on as “a bit of fun.” They frequent many of the trails in the South Island and have competed in many cycling events before. The men describe themselves as “real community

guys,” each actively involved in organisations such the Howick Business Association, the Rotary Club and local sports. They hope to raise around $15,000 between them through pre-ride fundraising efforts which are in the midst of planning. When it comes to pushing them to their physical limits, the tour is sure to be a challenge – but the rewards either end of the trek is what makes it worth it. “We’re social cyclists – but keen rugby fans,” they laugh. Ride of the Lions was set up in 2013 between former British and Irish Lions rugby players and is described as mixing the endurance of long-distance cycling with the camaraderie of the rugby field. The ride will see five former rugby players each side from the All Blacks and the British Lions ride alongside 40 other participants - 20 from New Zealand and 20 from the UK – as they take stops throughout regional New Zealand on their trip north between rugby matches. Former All Blacks who will be on the tour include Buck Shelford, Albert Anderson, Bernie McCahill, Ian Kirkpatrick and Andy Earl. he next exhibition opens on May 1. Bright Light, Soft Launch features 13 New Zealand artists, all exploring representations of the figure through image-making. One artist featured is Jenna Baydee, a Half Moon Bay resident and Macleans College alumni. Following a recent trip to Paris, Jenna has been combining her love of fashion photography and graphic design to produce beautiful images of family and loved ones. Also in this exhibition is artist Mish O’Neil. Her practice is based on analogue processes, primarily making large scale pinhole cameras (some as large as phone booths). The gallery will be hosting a photogram workshop at the gallery for children to talk more about old school image making. https://www.facebook.com/ events/1673517089608867/ There is also a small display of works from the local Secondary Schools which will be on display in the Meeting Room from the start of Term 2 until the beginning of June. The annual Estuary Awards open on June 10 with the awards ceremony beginning at 2.30pm, says manager, curator Zoe Hoeberigs. “As part of the awards we have a few public programmes that will be running,” she says.

“Of particular interest may be our clean up day in collaboration with the Tamaki Estuary Protection Society.” Also on display at the gallery in June will be a series of works by artist Peter Gibson Smith (https://petergibsonsmith.com/).

“Peter creates incredibly constructed paper sculptures, illustrated with images of New Zealand’s flora and fauna,” she says. “Peter is also Malcolm Smith’s nephew and shows the family’s creative spirit runs throughout the large clan.”

More debate needed ■■ A letter sent to the Howick Local Board

Having listened to some of the early debate about the Howick Special Character Statement at the Board meeting yesterday evening, April 10, I think it might be worth summarising the views of the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, and the bearing this has on decisions by the Howick Local Board. We see it in relatively simple terms. 1. The Independent Hearings Panel disagreed with the Council decision not to provide a Special Character Statement for Howick. Extracts of specific wording in their Statement of Issue (July 22, 2016) include: “Council sought to remove Howick from the Special Character Business Overlay” “Having heard and considered the evidence the (Independent Hearings) Panel considers Howick should remain a special character area”. “The (Independent Hearings) Panel does not agree with Council’s out of scope recommendations to delete the Special Character Overlay. The Panel does however recommend that a special character area statement be prepared by the Council …..” 2. When the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association raised this as part of our initial submission to Council on the Howick Development Plan, we were told that “this work is not timetabled” and that “it will be undertaken by a different team”. (Anna Jennings, November 22, 2016) 3. In a letter from the Mayor Phil Goff to the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association dated March 31, 2017, and contrary to the quotations in paragraph 2 above, he states that “Council intends to develop a special character statement with assistance from residents”. 4. It is our firm contention that agreement on the special character of Howick, defined in an agreed special character statement, provides a vital foundation to any future Development Plan. It defies logic to decide on future developments and only (much) later to decide on the character of the area for which these developments have been planned. The proposed process is com-

Weeds out of control Further to your articles recently re noxious weeds in front yards and backyards, thought I would share a photo of our absentee neighbour’s front yard. They purchased the pletely back to front. 5. We understand from the publicity that the Howick Development Plan is being developed under the leadership of the Howick Local Board – a fact reinforced by Adele White’s references to recent Howick market and school consultations. 6. We therefore believe that it is incumbent on the Howick Local Board, as sponsors of the Howick Development Plan, to insist on the Special Character Statement being included as an integral and guiding part of the Howick Development Plan process, even if this delays finalisation of the Plan because this component is not in Council’s current work plan. It would also make more sense for people from the same team to be involved in developments, rather than Council adopting a “silo” approach to planning for Howick. 7. If Resource Management Act requirements mean that Council cannot currently commence work on the Character Statement, then the Local Board should require further work on the Development Plan be suspended until the vital defining foundation document for Howick can be agreed. We hope that this issue will be debated further by the Board, and look forward to being advised of your decision. Laurie Slee Chair, Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association

Better than begging

First, I must make it clear that I am not in support of windscreen washers at intersec-

tions. What I am confused about is that MPs and Auckland Council are so concerned with stopping this money-making activity, yes activity, is the clue word, while beggars are permitted to lie in shop doorways begging for money, and making a filthy mess and doing nothing to gain handouts. Yes, working to gain a few dollars is illegal, but to do nothing and beg for money is allowed. What sort of message is this giving our social misfits? Bob Wichman Botany

Sort out your verges

As I walk frequently around the streets of Bucklands Beach and Howick, I am ashamed about the lack of respect growing numbers of residents have for the state of the grass on the verges outside their properties. Recently this has been made worse by the heavy rain and warmth. This has become more common in the last few years since it has been emphasised that it is not the individual property owners’ responsibility to maintain the roadside vergers. I note also that many of the worst examples are houses on small sections and seem to have no grass within the property. If they don’t own a lawn mower, there is another answer. Visitors to the area must be surprised by the lack of civic pride in our beautiful environment. David Armishaw Bucklands Beach

Giving your loved ones a special farewell State of Grace offers a caring and uniquely personalised approach to funeral arrangements. The range of services – many based on sustainable principles – ensures families that their loved ones will be given a special farewell. Janet Mikkelsen owns the business with her sister and the company accountant, Gillian. The two other funeral directors are Rachel Nash and Robyn Watson, while Lynda Casey is the Operations Manager. Anita Seccombe and Janet’s mother, Marion, also assist while her father, Terry, maintains their white Buick hearse. Based from a heritage cottage, the staff usually organise funerals at churches and other special venues. While they work with a group of celebrants, many families choose their own. After growing up and doing all her schooling in Howick, Janet’s 25 year nursing career centred on paediatric oncology wards – mostly at the Starship Hospital. She worked there on the palliative care team for seven years. Looking for a career change, Janet was offered a franchise from the women who had started State of Grace in West Auckland. After training and now three-and-a-half years on, she finds the work “very rewarding.” The team offer care with an intuitive and informal style – very different from the mainstream businesses. They describe themselves saying, “we are like the aunts in a family that know what needs sorting.” Families can opt for a traditional, a natural or eco funeral. State of Grace’s services include home-based care, which makes it possible for your loved one to be at home up to several days with special body care provided. Embalming is

rarely used. Or you can arrange for your loved one to stay at the cottage until the funeral with visiting times arranged. Others prefer a simple cremation service with staff providing a pick-up service and help with formalities, dressing the body and a farewell period before the handover for cremation. For environmental reasons, they use their own range of eco caskets and for cremation, a simple liner is used so the coffin can be re-used. It’s the little things these women do – like organising unconventional ways to transport a casket to a funeral or decorating a child’s coffin with carefully chosen decals that make all the difference. he 1960s was a time of change and teenage revolution and in the thick of it is a story of ‘plus size’ girl called Tracy Turnblad. Tracy’s larger than life personality gains her a lifechanging opportunity when she is chosen to dance on the popular ‘Corny Collins Show’. Tracy is transformed from social outcast to queen of the dance floor and then sets out to use her new-found fame and power to right the

wrongs of the social injustices of the time. Hairspray Junior is a family-friendly adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical and starts at Harlequin Musical Theatre on April 19th. Tracy is played by Melody Lui-Webster of Farm Cove Intermediate, who is no stranger to the stage in her fourth show with the production team of The Children’s Musical Theatre Studio. Melody says she is excited to bring Tracy

to life and feels she shares some of Tracy’s personality in wanting to dream big and perform on stage. William Crozier of Somerville Intermediate School, whose most recent role was Peter Pan at Harlequin, plays the handsome but insipid Link Larkin. Link seems to have no purpose until he meets Tracy and is swept up with her zest for life and sense of purpose. Supporting Tracy in her quest for change is her BFF Penny Pingleton,

played by Nadine Wesseling of Shelly Park School, a newcomer to the stage. Penny’s character is quiet and shy and she is repressed by her strict mother and religious background. But will Penny also find strength from her best friend and break free when she meets ‘Seaweed’, a boy from the other side of the tracks? Hairspray Jr is brought to the stage by director Susanne Dell and musical director Lynnette Leggett, and a cast of no less than 64 local children who all have energy to burn and the ability to bring the house down in this big and bold production. Sue and Lynnette would like to give thanks to the parents who tirelessly give their time to work on sets, props, costumes, sound and lighting, hair and makeup. Without them the show would not go on.

Market volumes and prices jump compared to February, indicating an expected seasonal effect. REINZ CEO Bindi Norwell says: “March reflects the seasonal peak for the year so far, with the largest number of homes sold and the largest month-on-month increase in the median price, as we normally expect to see this month. “Auckland has recorded another record median price and a 66 per cent jump in sales volumes on February, but it should be noted that the ‘March effect’ is more pronounced in Auckland than in other regions. Further, the level of inventory in Auckland are rising quickly with 47 per cent increase in inventory over the past month, offering buyers more choice.” ■■ New REINZ HPI shows March median price changes driven by higher priced sales REINZ has also released a new House Price Index, developed in partnership with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Already being used by the Reserve Bank’s forecasting and macro financial teams, plus the major banks, the REINZ HPI provides a new level of detail and understanding of the true movements of housing values over time. It does this by analysing how prices

in a market are influenced by a range of attributes such as land area, floor area, number of bedrooms etc. to create a single, more accurate measure of housing activity and trends over time. Using the Reserve Bank’s preferred Sale Price to Appraisal Ratio (SPAR) methodology, the REINZ HPI uses unconditional sales data (when the price is agreed) rather than at settlement, which can often be weeks later. It is therefore more accurate and timely. Describing the new REINZ HPI as ‘the gold standard’ in New Zealand house price analysis tools, Norwell says: “The REINZ HPI takes many aspects of market composition into account, and thus provides more accurate results. When applied to the March data, the HPI indicates that the lift in the median price was largely driven by changes in the underlying mix of dwellings sold in March compared to February. While the median price went up $51,000 across New Zealand, the HPI was stable month-on-month, at 0.0 per cent change, indicating more sales in higher price brackets than lower ones. “Furthermore, the HPI numbers are backed by anecdotal evidence from around the country.”

ollowing a mixed outlook for the New Zealand housing market in February, March has shown traditional lifts in terms of median price, volume and activity levels, according to the latest figures released this month by the Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ). The market reached its peak level of activity for the year so far as median house prices firmed and sales volumes rose strongly across New Zealand during March, which is traditionally the busiest month for real estate transactions across New Zealand. The national median price rose $51,000 to $546,000 during March, an increase of 10 per cent on February and a new record median, while eight of 12 regions hit new record high median sale prices: Auckland, Northland, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Taranaki, Canterbury/ Westland and Otago. On a seasonally adjusted basis the national median rose 2 per cent. The number of sales for March 2017 was 8504, an increase of 36 per cent on February, although down 11 per cent compared to March 2016. On a seasonally adjusted basis sales for March rose 2 per cent

There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. To prepare outdoor areas for every weather condition no matter how adverse, Shades Direct should be the first port of call as it specialises in outdoor awning solutions that add space, style and value to the home. Designed and engineered on New Zealand shores, Shades Direct’s range of quality and versatile outdoor products is suited to both commercial and residential applications. One of Shades Direct’s most popular products is the Outsider awning system. Fabricated from a mixture of

marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider awning doesn’t seem to fit in with a particular home decor, home owners are in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of colours and styles including outdoor blinds (both PVC and

vinyl mesh), shades sails and folding arm awnings. The best part about the service at Shades Direct is that you’re dealing directly with the manufacturer and because of this, prices have never been better! The team also offer a FREE, no-obligation measure and quote and are happy to offer advice on the best outdoor solution for your home. By installing an awning from Shades Direct and enhancing the home, families will soon reap the benefits of having more space to do the outdoor things they love. Don’t wait, contact Shades Direct agent Scott on 021 957 535 or free phone 0800 SHADES (0800 742 337). For further information visit www.shadesdirect.co.nz

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Lydia Ko’s 9th caddie I

t’s great to see teenage golfer Lydia Ko back to top form, even if critics question the wisdom of her decision to sack South African caddie Gary Matthews after just nine tournaments together. But given her relative slump in form since July when she has failed to secure an LPGA win, her latest decision is more understandable than her termination of a hugely successful partnership with Australian Jason Hamilton with whom she won 10 of her 14 LPGA tournaments, including both majors. Since then, Hamilton has had far more success carrying the bag for South Korean Ha Na Jang than Matthews enjoyed with our New Zealand sweetheart. It is, of course, a classic case of the chicken and the egg when deciding whether it is the player or the caddie who is at fault in a game notorious for its fluctuations of form. Indeed Ko had seven different caddies in her rookie year before settling on Hamilton in September, 2014. “I know she copped a lot of flak for that but if she didn’t see what’s out there, then she’s not going to know what she wants,” Hamilton said in March, 2015, before she claimed her first Australian
