hen Helen Manson started working as a humanitarian photographer, she found herself thinking the people she photographed were somehow fundamentally different from her. The 33-year old has travelled to 35 countries to photograph postwar zones, refugee camps and areas stricken with famine and drought, capturing the faces of a world in crisis. Painfully, she says, she has come to realise how wrong she was. “I thought maybe they don’t feel things like I do... maybe they expect less, they care less, they hope for less, they want less or they need less,” she says. “I’ve seen that they are exactly like me and that what they endure living in poverty is no easier for them just because they are poor.” Manson, a former Macleans Col-

lege student, lives in Kampala, Uganda, with her husband, a trauma counsellor for refugees, and three young children helping create campaigns for 50 NGOs and charities. Recently she was in Auckland as part of Tearfund’s Citizens of Humanity Tour to share her work with Kiwis. Manson is on the front lines, witnessing the best and the worst parts of humanity. In March she was tasked with photographing the work of Medical Teams International and Red Cross in hospitals in Tanzania. She saw children fighting for their lives, shaking as they battled malaria and pneumonia while their mothers wept at their bedside. As she was leaving the hospital one day she spotted an eight-yearold girl hooked up to an oxygen tank. She went home and prayed that these children would make it through the night.
The next day, while several of the children had improved, the eightyear-old girl had not. “All of a sudden she started making a noise that I’ll never forget. The doctor put his hand on my back and said ‘it’s time to go’,” Manson says, holding back tears. “I walked out into the sunlight and I completely lost it. Sobs came out from the deepest place they possibly could. “You should never see an eightyear-old little girl take her dying breaths from simple stuff like pneumonia and malaria.” Once she composed herself, she visited the mums in the maternity ward. “Within minutes I watched newborn twins come into the world.” Manson says wrestling with the tragedy of death and the celebration of new life within 10 minutes of each other was a significant moment for her.
“Just when this world seems ruined beyond repair, a baby is born.” Manson says there is a rocket inside of her that burns fiercely for humanitarian work. But it’s a job that takes its toll. “When I interview people, more often than not I sit there with tears rolling down my cheeks and I feel sick. I start crying because it’s the only thing I know how to do,” she says. “I encourage them for how brave they are to be sharing their story. Sometimes I say nothing because sometimes being there with them in silence is all I’ve got.” She says she then goes home to edit and write the best campaign she can to connect with people in the west and “prays like mad that people give”. Her most recent assignment saw her follow the story of three Ugandan mothers from pregnancy until their child’s first birthday. ➤ Turn to Page 5

Crawford Reserve’s controversial blue artwork ‘Kid Justice’ has been temporarily removed for repairs. Vandals recently damaged the feet of the $55,000 artwork, which was erected less than six months ago. Kid Justice, by artist Erin Forsyth, was created as part of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Forsyth says Kid Justice depicted a “young person, a Governance, upholding equality for all people, looking toward an unseeable future.” The community has been divided in their opinions of the

Estuary and TEEF wants them gone. “Little Bucklands Beach looks pretty clean, until you focus on the small stuff along the high tide line” says Beth Evans, initiator of the TEEF Nurdle Project. “Volunteers have been shocked at the number of nurdles they are finding” says Beth.
“Nurdles float and look like food to wildlife” says TEEF co-chair Julie Chambers. “We can all do our bit to keep plastic out of the environment by disposing of it properly and using less, but sadly, consumers don’t have any control over nurdles”. TEEF is trying different technologies to help clean-up the nurdles and other micro-
plastics. “So far we’ve tried tweezers, sieves, a wheelie bin converted into a filter and last week a prototype aqua drone” says Julie. TEEF is seeking to work with industry, businesses, Auckland Council and local communities to clean-up the Tamaki Estuary and to stop further contamination.

artwork with many saying the monument is a “waste of money” and an “eye-sore”. Others were supportive and have said they feel proud Howick was chosen to feature an artwork with such significant meaning and that it fills a gap in Howick’s public art collection. Auckland Council’s Manager Public Art Emily Trent says they will be working with their maintenance team to repair the damage as quickly as possible. “It’s disappointing to see acts of vandalism to public art projects, which ultimately cost local ratepayers,” she says. “To ensure the work isn’t
vandalised further, Kid Justice will be temporarily taken offsite for repairs.” Trent encouraged people to report any vandalism with as much information as possible on 09 301 01 01. Kid Justice rests on a plinth which has been designed as a permanent foundation on which to install a changing collection of art that responds to both contemporary and historic themes. Repairs are estimated to take around three week and Kid Justice is expected to remain a feature at Crawford Reserve for five years.

Residents revolt against boy racers, drugs, sex and rubbish By Farida Master
R
esidents of Point View Dr are having sleepless nights as they worry about their safety. Boy racers doing doughnuts and wheelies till the early hours, late night parties with drug dealings and fights disturbing the peace at night, sexual paraphernalia strewn all over the vacant sections of land at 178 Point View Dr, has made it a “nightmare” for residents. With sweeping million dollar views, the prime locale has for the last three to four years become a playground for the rough. Anxious residents of the semirural area complain that there has been an increasing rash of antisocial elements, leaving behind a trail of broken beer bottles, cans, condoms, syringes and a pile of fast food and takeaway boxes. Just a fortnight ago, they collected more than 78 bags of rubbish in a massive clean-up. Judith Grant, president of the Point View Heritage Society, says that back in the day, this was known as the Armstrong block “and never has this area been a magnet for people except on Guy Fawkes Day or New Year’s Eve where people gathered to get a view of the city. “But now after a builder bought the property and subdivided it in 2013, it’s thanks to social media that hundreds of cars are parked here on
the weekends.” The seven to eight sections that have been bought by individuals but not developed due to the downward turn in the real estate market have become a meet-up spot for the unwanted masses. There have been instances of a couple of residents who have walked up to the cars parked and requested them to turn the volume down only to be threatened for doing so. “Since the subdivision of an area of land known as 178 Point View Drive, the problem has increased 50-fold,” Grant says. “Houses are startng to be constructed along the bottom area of this subdivision, but along the top of the ridge line, sections are still empty of houses. People come and park their cars to admire the view, eat, drink, take drugs, graffiti and leave behind piles of rubbish and broken glass before they speed off along our winding road, endangering their own and others’ lives with reckless driving habits. “We’ve had Councillor Paul Young visit us and we have written to the mayor too. “Over the months we’ve contacted the Council, police, Auckland Transport and the Howick Local Board to help find a solution. But this is a very complex problem and needs all concerted parties to sit together.
As part of a major clean up, volunteers along with residents of Point View Dr recently collected 78 bags full of rubbish at the vacant sections of 178 Point View Dr. Photo supplied
“Fortunately Howick Local Board member Mike Turinsky has been quite proactive,” she says. “He put a post on his Facebook page and got a whole lot of volunteers from his network as well as members of the Asian community who helped with the clean up,” she says. There is so much litter that now some of the residents walk around the section every day with a rubbish bag and disposable gloves to clean up. And while the police have now upped their surveillance during the day time, unfortunately it hasn’t made too much of a difference at night, says Grant. The narrow winding road that was once meant to be a short cut for Moa hunters was never built for
traffic. “There are practically three accidents a week here,” says resident Linden Johnson who admits that driving home late at night the day before, she put her lights on full beam, “since I didn’t want to run over any drunken person lying comatose on the road.” Neville and Tracy voice their serious concerns about the kind of people disturbing the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood. They are also worried about walking their dog on the vacant section with broken pieces of glass lying around. Howick Local Board member for Botany, Turinsky says that being a youth worker, he is aware that the area is used to have a “sesh” as in session” “It’s a pity that many native plants
are uprooted with four-wheeling dangerously racing along the slopes -could horribly crash into homes. The resident of one house complained that partiers were throwing beer cans and bottles at his window in the middle of the night. “When we cleaned up we found disgusting amount of sexual and drug paraphernalia, including dildos, condoms and syringes,” he says. “I have been trying to highlight what has been happening here with the Auckland Transport, Council, and the local board. The Police, who are overworked and thinly spread over, are very aware of this and are increasing patrols. Having street lights would definitely help but there is a lot more action needed to get rid of the antisocial behaviour.” When contacted, senior sergeant Counties Manukau East Michael Schmidt, said, “The issues around Point View Drive are of concern for Police who have been liaising with local residents and increasing patrols where possible. “Two of the driveways leading to vacant hilltop sections have had barricades put in place and piles of landfill as a deterrence which has had some effect in reducing problems. “While people are lawfully able to stop on any street, and in this case enjoy the views, Police will continue to work with the community to address ongoing problems.”

Celebrating unsung citizens By Farida Master
A
cknowledging unsung heroes for their service to the community was the Howick Celebrated Citizens Awards held on Sunday at the Howick Club. Hosted by the Howick Local Board and MCd by community stalwart Phil Taylor, the event was a celebration of selfless achievers who have made a contribution in many fields. While there were close contend-
ers for the Celebrated Citizens Award 2019, the overall winner was Abbess Manshin of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. The temple at Stancombe Rd, Flat Bush, is known not only for its interfaith work but also for worldclass art galleries, a very popular vegetarian cafe, a popular children’s project attended by local schools, Buddha’s Birthday which brings tens of thousands of people to the temple to celebrates peace and diversity and a close partnership with NZ Police.
A world in crisis ➤➤From page 1 The series, which she named ‘The First Hello’, is part of Compassion International’s survival project and advocates for the importance of child sponsorship from pregnancy. “Traditionally, child sponsorship would start at five, but children weren’t making it to five,” A baby born in Uganda is 10 times more likely to die than a New Zealand baby. If they do survive, she says, too many end up in one of Uganda’s 800 orphanages. “Mothers abandon their babies every day in pillar trains, hospitals, toilets and trash cans – it’s not their fault, they see no other option.” She says the survival project offers mothers the chance to give
their babies the best start to life through antenatal visits, medical care and support through the first year of their baby’s life. “There really is no difference in what we want for our children, only in what we can give them,” she says. Manson hoped that by the end of the week-long tour she would have helped get all 100 children in the survival project sponsored. And today only one child is left unsponsored. Manson says she wants people to feel encouraged that although there are many challenges facing our world; there has been tremendous progress made through projects like child sponsorship. ■■ If you want to stand alongside Manson and sponsor a child you can visit Tearfund.org.nz/sponsor.
Amongst other winners that evening, was the Rising Star Award won by Howick College student Ethan McCormick, a young environmental activist who is a big part of the Pest Free Howick Ward team. Winning the Kauri Environmental Award was Matthew Brajkovich for his longstanding contribution to maintaining Howick Ward’s beauty and ecological sustainability including restoring the Cockle Bay Domain. The Exceptional Service Award was won by the St John Opportunity Shop in Howick which is a vital part of the community. A testament to the commu-
nity work that she does was the Golden Heart Award won by Janice White. Apart from running the divorce care groups at Eastgate Church, she visits women’s prisons, assists in voluntary work that helps Women’s Refuge, arranges for food parcels for families at Christmas, and organises clothing donations. The Joint winners of the Youth Development Award were music teacher Hamish Arthur and Zachary Wong from Howick Youth Council. Hamish is the mentor behind the St Andrew’s Big Band, a group he started with the pur-

ight now it feels as though every week the Government breaks another promise to New Zealanders and last week was no different. Finance Minister Grant Robertson has thrown in the towel and scrapped his self-imposed debt target, which was part of his “Budget Responsibility Rules”. Now instead of a fixed target of reducing Crown debt to 20 per cent, Mr Robertson has given himself a range. This essentially means debt could rise to the upper end of the range - 25 per cent - loosening the purse strings by tens of billions of dollars. This amount of money isn’t just “wriggle room”, as the government puts it. The government is admitting defeat. They have repeatedly used these rules to give themselves the appearance of being fiscally responsible and it’s all crumbling down around them. They have been backed into a corner by allowing the economy to slow, over-promising in several areas and spending up large on things like Shane Jones’ slush

National believes in paying down debt when the economy is in good shape so we have the ability to support New Zealand during a crisis, like we did during the Global Financial Crisis and the Christchurch earthquakes. That’s what has historically kept New Zealand out of trouble. Instead, Labour has wasted the surpluses they inherited and weakened our economy through poor economic management. New Zealand could have had enough money to meet our needs. The debt target is the latest broken promise by the Government as its “year of delivery” continues to be an embarrassing string of failures. The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have waved the white flag on a significant rule they promised to New Zealanders. The Government is 18 months in and Mr Robertson has given up any pretence of fiscal responsibility, showing you just can’t trust Labour with the economy. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga
Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga fund, fees-free for tertiary students, and KiwiBuild – all poor spending choices. This is a blunt admission the Government can’t manage the books properly and an admission of what National has been saying for months, that the government cannot deliver on everything they have promised. But this doesn’t just mean more money to throw around at poor policies, this change means tens of billions of dollars of extra debt our future generations will have to pay for. Mr Robertson is giving the Government a licence to spend up large, but it’s at the taxpayers’ expense. Debt isn’t free. It will have to be paid for with higher taxes in the future. Labour is putting a heavy financial burden on our children and grandchildren.

Teachers take strike action T
here was complete chaos on Queen Street yesterday as thousands of teachers from primary and secondary schools walked off their jobs in a combined national mega strike demanding better pay and working conditions. While Murray Burton, principal of Elim Christian College, said that he could only urge parents to keep the kids at home during yesterday’s historic nationwide strike, the Ministry of Education said 1424 schools had advised they would be closed. In an industrial action which has
included both primary and secondary teachers for the first time, teachers and supporters marched from Fort Street to Queen Street, waving placards at onlookers. The strike action affected 773,000 students with parents being forced to take leave or make alternate arrangements for their kids to be looked after. The marches were organised by the Post Primary Teachers Association and the New Zealand Educational Institute, the union that represents nearly 50,000 teachers across the country.

here was a lot of fun, laughter and spoken Portuguese as a busload principals from Brazil recently descended on the grounds of Howick College. A rousing welcome by the kapa haka group along with a lineup of excited Brazilian students studying at the college welcomed 47 principals who were there to learn about innovative and sustainable learning pathways introduced by Howick College. On a seven-day tour of New Zealand, the educators were on a whistle-stop tour of eight schools and universities in Auckland and Wellington. Joao Paulo Salgueiro from Salgueiro School said the group is

The UNESCO values of diversity, peace, tolerance, human rights and cultural heritage are upheld whilst looking at sustainable development goals in education, he says. “We travel once a year to different countries known for good quality education. Canada, Japan and Netherlands France and Spain are the other countries the group has travelled to recently,” he said. China meets Howick in class
By FARIDA MASTER
A
big delegation of dignitaries from China has delivered a special gift to Owairoa Primary School. The school was one of those chosen to provide an important platform for exchanging information and opportunities in Auckland. Celebrating the sister-school relationship with Chaotian Elementary School, the grand event also marked the unveiling of the newly installed Owairoa Distance Learning Classroom as it coincided with the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Auckland and Guangzhou. “Our school was extremely honoured to be chosen as New Zealand’s only school to receive this fantastic facility of an intelligent classroom with two big multimedia screens,
kindly donated to us by the leading educational technology company CreateView,” says Owairoa Primary principal Alan McIntyre. Aligning with Techweek 19, one of New Zealand’s largest technology events that focuses on digital creativity, two installers were flown over from China to install the smart classroom equipment. The goal is to enhance digital teaching techniques that will allow the school to have digital communication across the globe. Diane McIntyre, who helped organise the logistics of the big event that included a week-long cultural exchange between 10 Chaotian students, accompanied by teacher Ms Dana Lin and five parents, says: “The plan is to establish a connection to Chaotian Primary School, allowing their students and teachers to observe the

A delegation of 14 dignitaries including Zhang Shuofu, Party secretary of CPC Guangzhou Committee; Liu Baochun, Director-General of Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office; Liu Chenhui, director-general of Guangzhou Municipal Commerce Bureau and Rachel Maidment, NZ Counsul General in Guangzhou, were given a Maori welcome followed by joint performances by students of both schools. The unveiling of the big screen classrooms was followed by Chaotian students demonstrating their skills at embroidery and martial arts.

You’ve probably heard that using electronic devices with screens right before bed can negatively affect your sleep. But why is this, exactly? As it turns out, the light from an electronic screen can disrupt your circadian rhythm, tricking your body into thinking it’s daytime. Your circadian rhythm (your body’s internal clock) consists of a roughly 24-hour cycle of intermittent periods of drowsiness and alertness. Daylight keeps your circadian rhythm aligned with your environment, so that you start to get sleepy late at night when it’s dark. Studies show, however, that the blue light emitted from screens interferes with the brain’s secretion of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. As a result, using technology

Traffic blackspot ‘abandoned by AT’ B
otany MP Jami-Lee Ross isn’t giving up his fight to have safety improvements carried out to an east Auckland traffic blackspot. Mr Ross says he’s disappointed Auckland Transport (AT) has chosen not to carry through with a proposed multi-million dollar upgrade of the Chapel Road bridge in Flat Bush. He’s writing to Auckland mayor Phil Goff in an effort to have the decision reversed. “I think it’s very unfortunate that AT has abandoned an important upgrade to a significant road in Flat Bush,” Mr Ross says. “With considerable growth in Flat Bush, and many families moving to the area, road safety is particularly important. “Chapel Road at that particular bridge is at rural road standard but it’s in a fastgrowing urban environment.” A 2017 AT report identified and recommended safety improvements to the Chapel Road bridge, which is more than six decades old. The document stems from an assessment to determine the preferred option for changing the bridge. AT identified a “significant safety concern” on the stretch of Chapel Road between Stancombe Road and Ormiston Road. Mr Ross says crash data he received from the previous government showed there were 56 crashes on the section of road between 2006 and 2016. There were 26 injury crashes, which included six

serious injuries and four fatalities, as well as 30 non-injury crashes. He’s disappointed AT has chosen not to fund the work as part of its latest Auckland Regional Land Transport Plan. “This is a fast-growing area with multiple schools, a new town centre being built in Ormiston, and a premier park next door, yet we have a very old bridge built to rural standards. “It has a dangerous dog-leg curve, no pedestrian facilities, and a crash record that would make anyone queasy. “What is it going to take for AT to put some funding in to
carry out an upgrade?” Mr Ross says the bridge has safety issues that need to be addressed and it doesn’t meet the needs of the community’s road users. “Several years ago the previous government and AT agreed to fund planning of initial works to the bridge with an eye to eventually upgrading it. “I took the then-Associate Minister of Transport to see the bridge in 2017 because as a local Member of Parliament it was a high priority for transport safety funding at that time. “An upgrade of the bridge
was on the cards. I accept that the cost of building a bridge has increased, but I don’t think that’s sufficient reason for AT to have abandoned this project.” The AT report states Chapel Road accommodates about 16,200 vehicles a day. Eight different options for changing the bridge were included in the report, which recommended a network arch bridge with reduced width be progressed to the detailed design phase. It was the option that “best addresses the issues and constraints identified in the report”, it states.
It was a community celebration on Friday as Riverina School opened their whanau room during their Mother’s Day Assembly. The whanau room was a project Riverina was keen to develop as a dedicated space for the community. With the support of the new Rotary Club group, a working bee was organised to clean and prepare the old dental clinic. The room transformed from a cold, unloved space to a social hub. The Pakuranga Tamaki River Auxiliary is a new group of Rotarians attached to the Pakuranga Club, with the member’s ages ranging from 19 to 70. The transformation of the old, run down Riverina Dental Clinic to a smart and functional Whanau Room was their very first major project. The club members are very proud to be associated with the development of this very valuable and welcoming space for mums and families to use and enjoy.

It takes a village to raise an exhibition Under the inspirational guidance of the exhibition curator, Ros Palmer, the team of volunteers and staff at the Howick Historical Village have worked together to provide a mind-boggling display of all things Victorian to celebrate the 200 years anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birthday. To quote Village Manager Kerry Powell: “What Ros has created is just fantastic and provides an excellent interactive experience for visitors of all ages. It has all come from Ros’s individual ideas and creativity. By harnessing and fostering the skills of the supporting

team, the exhibition has been brought to practical reality.” The public is invited to enjoy the exhibition through
to mid-July. Visitors will be delighted to discover many quirky and interesting stories relating to a monarch whose influence still touches many lives today. “For example, did you know that Queen Victoria is the reason that wedding dresses are white! “ said Kerry. “Her influence was extensive throughout the empire and her name lives on all over the world.” Check out Eckford’s Cottage for themes of music, song and dance, dogs and coronation, the Courthouse for the theme of assassination and the grand homestead, Puhi Nui, for themes of diet, whiskey,
childbirth and mourning to name a few. There are also interesting hands-on activities which include penny rubbings, making your own coat of arms and family tree, and a postcard location competition. The ongoing royal celebrations will include Meet the Villagers on June 16 which will be a lively affair with fun and games, old fashioned crafts, cooking and activities. Between July 8 and 19 (Monday to Friday), have some fun during the school holidays and discover the amusing story of Queen Victoria’s underpants.

Punishment does not fit the crime
Gun controls
not fit the “crime” – especially considering the context of the communication and the existence, and use, of the religious phrase for millennia. It is disproportionate - clearly virtue signalling, and sending a strong, and intolerant, signal to society that people must not venture on some topics, even if it is your religious belief, or you will be incommensurately punished. Will the courts see it as such?
The real issue is not his communication (which I disagree with) but: is the punishment of Israel Falau proportional to the “crime”? As a yardstick, we could use the punishments dealt to other stars in rugby e.g. Kurtley Beale and his ‘white lines and didgeridoo’ antics (racial insensitivity), or go to another sport, to Aussie rules, no fans among amputees there (insulting the disabled). How about cricket and blatant ball tampering (cheating) followed by quick player rehabilitation? Rugby League - where do you start at 66 scandals in four years? Apparently offending across the board - financial, sexual, drugs and bad manners. But let’s not forget the girls with Liz Patu, a Kiwi, but also for Rugby Australia, biting her way into trouble; Jessica Peris (athletics, doping) banned from the 2018 Australian Commonwealth Games; Kylie Palmer (swimming, doping) and so on. In all these cases there were certainly people who were objectively harmed, people out of pocket, some having prizes, prestige or opportunity stolen. These real harms being more relevant than subjective harms, like the hurt feelings of an ideological group - or post hoc suggestions of role model infringements. Relatively, the punishment of Israel - losing his livelihood, being pilloried and removed from participation in a sport he loves, does

Guns in the wrong hands Four or is it five shootings in South Auckland in the last two weeks. I thought the Government had ordered for all the guns to be handed in to the police? Obviously the bad guys don’t watch TV or read the newspapers or they would have been queuing up at the police stations to hand in their guns as requested. Maybe the police should call around at all the homes of suspected bad guys and ask them if they have any guns to hand in. Another slip-up by the Government. They did not tell the cops to lock up the guns when they were handed in, so a bad guy just walked into a police station, chose the guns he wanted and make a selection to add to his arsenal. Maybe the Government were just joking about handing in the guns or did I just imagine the whole scenario?

Let’s hear it for our brave firefighters! On Saturday May 4, I celebrated International Firefighters Day at the Howick Fire Station. It was an opportunity for me to catch up with our local firefighters, to thank them for all the work that they do in the community and also to learn about some of the challenges that they are facing. Our firefighters do much more than just fighting fires, with greater responsibilities around supporting our other emergency services, particularly St John. This comes with additional pressures that our firefighters face on a dayto-day basis, both from additional demand and additional stress. Over the past year, our local Howick
Fire Station staff and volunteers have had to attend numerous incidents across east Auckland as well as helping to raise fire safety awareness in our community. Most recently they were first on the scene at Pakuranga Heights School where they were able to quickly extinguish a fire before it could spread to other classrooms and cause further damage. I want to acknowledge and thank all the firefighters at Howick Fire Station, both professional and volunteers for all the great work they do for our community. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed!

Once again the gun gets much of the blame for the massacre in the Christchurch mosques. Knives can be a weapon, so can chainsaws, Hilux vans and acid. It is not so much a problem of controlling the weapons but of influencing the attitude of would-be killers. All these weapons listed have useful functions in everyday life. Knives are for various uses around the house, chainsaws for cutting trees and firewood, vans for transportation oe people and goods. What makes them dangerous is when someone sees them as a useful weapon of choice for killing people. It’s the evil thinking that makes these tools dangerous in the hands of evil people. Shouldn’t we be challenging the mindset of evil in our midst? An enlightened society would teach the sanctity of life at all levels of the education system. We are working in the wrong direction banning guns and who knows what will be banned next. It’s a knee-jerk reaction. A more concerted effort would be to thwart evil, reveal its dark secrets and confront its author. Now that would be a step in the right direction. But who is equipped to do that? Probably not our present political leaders. This is the prupose of the church. Is it up to the challenge?

Halftime 3 – 19 Marie Raos Ray White Premier Development side won by default over Mt Wellington
akuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers almost pulled off the comeback of the season reducing a heavy half-time deficit to record a 24-18 loss against Eden. PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini said the performance demonstrates an ability by the Prems to step up in the second half. The Prems were down 19-3 at the break. “They (Eden) were very clinical in that first half. We gave away too many penalties. That was pretty disheartening.,” he said. “But in the second Half we adapted and had a bit more opportunity and near the end we were well within a position to win.” The Prems had to focus to stay in the hunt for a top four finish. They meet Papatoetoe at home this weekend.

Beware Indian comeback W
isely the Black Caps are not getting carried away with their six-wicket victory against powerful India in their opening World Cup ODI warmup game on London’s Oval wicket which saw Trent Boult weave his swing magic. With Boult leading the way with his 4-33, backed by all-rounder Jimmy Neesham’s 3-26, India struggled to 179 from 39.2 overs. New Zealand hit the required 180 with almost 13 overs to spare, thanks to Ross Taylor’s 71 and Kane Williamson’s 67. While skipper Williamson accumulated his total from a pedestrian 87 balls after a disappointing Indian Premier League Twenty20, Taylor amassed his from just 75 at almost a run ball. Before that, Taylor’s ODI average this year was 74.1. In 2017 it was 60.5 and last year it was an incredible Bradman like 91.3. While coach Gary Stead would have been delighted with the performance of his two premier batsmen, there will be concern Colin Munro went for a three-ball duck and opening partner Martin Guptill was dismissed for a shaky 22. Munro likes to play with the fearless abandon of dynamic mentor Brendon McCullum who gave the Black Caps such a fast start on their way to the 2015 World Cup glory
Ross Taylor amassed his 71 from just 75 balls in the World Cup ODI warm-up game against India.
before ecstatic home crowds. Unfortunately he can also be reckless and sacrifice his wicket too easily, just as McCullum did against Australia in the 2015 final against brilliant pace bowler Mitchell Starc. On a pitch favouring swing and seam that was so different to what is expected on others that will favour the batsmen, the Black Caps made hay while the sun shone at the Oval.
Particularly pleasing was Colin de Grandhomme’s 1-12 from six economic overs in which he captured the wicket of master batsman Virat Kohli for 18 with a pearler. All-rounders Neesham and de Grandhomme are hard-hitting middle order batsmen who can accumulate runs quickly. But only one may make the starting XI if dry wickets favour fielding both spinners, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, who went wicketless against

India. Still it was a heartening opening warm-up for a team that had not been together for a few months although everyone expects India, along with England and Australia, to be a much tougher proposition when the championship proper gets underway on Thursday. Meanwhile I’m surprised that in strongly favouring experience, passionate Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua left Aliyah Dunn out of her
Agnew’s Angle World Cup squad. Goal shoot Dunn’s scoring percentage in the ANZ championship has been consistently superior to goal attacks Bailey Mes and Ameliaranne Ekenasio although apparently Taurua wasn’t satisfied with her strength and conditioning. On the credit side Mes is an outstanding rebounder whereas Ekenasio is a beautiful feeder whose combination with Dunn is a major reason for the Central Pulse’s success this season. And no-one works the circle better. Obviously there is no complaint about the selection of Australian based Maria Folau who, at 32, has hinted her outstanding international career could be coming to a close. That would be a pity for her amazing long range goals, shot quickly with such poise and confidence, is one of the international game’s greatest highlights. The squad is: Karin Burger, Gina Crampton, Ameliaranne Ekenasio, Maria Folau, Phoenix Karaka, Casey Kopua, Laura Langman (captain), Bailey Mes, Katrina Rore, Shannon Saunders, Te Paea SelbyRickit, Jane Watson.
