Preparing for the future

As the storm that battered the country earlier this year becomes a distant memory, the focus is turning to how to prepare for the future. Local beaches were battered in the storm, which caused severe flooding, power cuts and widespread debris. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff visited Mellons Bay last Friday on the first of his tour of local beaches to survey the damage and speak with residents and Local Board members about erosion concerns and preventative measures for the future.

Family members want Air NZ safety video pulled

Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh has spoken out against a new Air New Zealand safety video filmed in Antarctica. He joins a chorus of upset family members whose loved ones died in the 1979 Mt Erebus disaster. Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica. All 257 people on board were killed.

Village lift a danger to residents

Residents of a local retirement village are frustrated as their demands to replace a dangerous elevator fall on deaf ears. The 19-yearold lift at MetlifeC are Pakuranga Village regularly breaks down and elderly residents often find themselves trapped inside.

March Home destroyed by blaze in Pakuranga

Howick baby seriously injured, police investigate A Howick infant has been taken into care after suffering serious injuries believed to be consistent with domestic abuse. The four-month-old girl was admitted to Middlemore Hospital on February 18 where medical staff discovered significant fractures to her skull, ribs, arms and legs.

A Pakuranga home has been destroyed after a fire that ripped through the property at the weekend. A neighbour on Archmillen Avenue said she called emergency services after smelling smoke and seeing flames through the house’s window.

Residents doubt promise of new lift

Retirement village providers Metlifecare have promised to replace a troublesome lift at the Pakuranga Village following complaints from residents that the existing lift is unsafe. However residents aren’t confident they will see this promise carried out anytime soon.

Pakuranga murder trial begins

The trial of the man accused of killing young Pakuranga mother Chozyn Koroheke is underway in the High Court at Auckland. Turiarangi Tai is accused of shooting Ms Koroheke once in the abdomen at close range with a 12 gauge double-barrelled shotgun at a house on Pakuranga Rd on April 4 last year. Ms Koroheke died from her injuries in the back of an ambulance later that night.

Busway approved, less than 40 minutes to Britomart

Auckland Council has approved consent for the second stage of a busway that will get you from Botany to Britomart in less than 40 minutes during peak traffic. Construction of the busway, which will involve construction of a dedicated, congestion-free busway along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road, is due to begin at the end of the year.

AT asked to remove bus stop

Howick Local Board members are calling for Auckland Transport (AT) to get rid of one of their new bus stops. At this month’s board meeting, Howick Local Board member Adele White highlighted her intent to move a motion to have AT remove the bus stop at 43 Cook Street.

Illegal rubbish dumping still an issue

Microchip helps reunite cat with its owner one year later

Illegal rubbish dumping is still proving to be a problem for the residents of east Auckland. In one of the most recent incidents, a couch was set alight after being dumped in a reserve in Cockle bay. Residents near the reserve were quick to put out the fire but it again raised the questions of what is being done to tack illegal rubbish dumping in east Auckland?

Cat left for dead, SPCA investigating

An investigation has been launched to find those responsible for reportedly wrapping a cat in masking tape and leaving it for dead in Whitford. An SPCA spokesperson said the cat was in critical condition when it arrived at the Auckland SPCA.

It’s been exactly one year since Icy the cat went missing from her home in Pakuranga. Five days before the one year anniversary of her disappearance, Icy and her owner were joyfully reunited with the help of a microchip.

New police base for Beachlands

The Howick Youth Council used Khorshed Tarapore’s petition ‘Save east Auckland bus routes’ to write recommendation on how AT could improve the new network and better include youth in transport decisions in the future.

Howick Youth Council calls for greater transparency around transport

A new police base has opened in Beachlands as part of a new policing initiative. The new community base will bring a valuable police presence to the Pohutukawa Coast and help prevent crime and improve community safety, Police Minister Stuart Nash said in Beachlands last Thursday at the launch the new police base.

Teens killed in Pakuranga crash named

The teenagers who died in a devastating car crash on Friday morning have since been named as 17-year-old Nathaniel (Nathan) Quist and 13-year-old Ella Berrington. The crash that claimed their lives took place at around 4.30am on Friday when the car they were driving crashed into a commercial building in Udys Road/Johns Lane.

A recent meeting between the Howick Youth Council and Auckland Transport (AT) has sparked hope among east Auckland youth of greater transparency around transport projects in the future. The topics of discussion included the possibility of restoring direct bus routes from Bucklands Beach and Cockle Bay to the city, transparency around future public transport initiatives, and how AT can better engage the local community.

Fuel tax to cost Aucklanders $1.5bn more

With Auckland’s regional fuel tax coming into effect this week, National’s transport spokesperson Jami-Lee Ross says the cost of living in Auckland is set to skyrocket. He says Aucklanders will be paying a total of up to $1.5 billion more for petrol, Ross says.

August

Principal of Ormiston Senior College Diana Patience says students will begin working towards NCEA Level 2 over two years. Photo supplied.

OSC’s new approach to NCEA

Ormiston Senior College will be doing things differently with Year 11 students and NCEA next year. With schools becoming more aware of the adverse effect of continual assessment on adolescent mental health, come 2019, a new approach to NCEA in the first year of senior college has been planned. Students will begin working towards NCEA Level 2 over two years instead of focusing on NCEA Level 1 for a year and then Level 2 the second year.

Teachers buckle under pressure

Principals of local primary schools are deeply concerned about the crisis of teacher shortage and the increasing strain on teachers.

Ormiston Police are investigating a number of complaints from residents in the Dannemora area of a person seen entering their properties at night. Detective Hamish Wyllie of Counties Manukau East Police said reports have stated a male has entered private property and tried to peer inside windows.

Teachers take to the streets

Part of a contingent of teachers from Somerville Intermediate School were among the hundreds of local teachers who took part in the protest march along Queen Street on Wednesday last week. As many as 10,000 teachers, children and parents marched up from Queen St to Aotea Square in the first strike by primary teachers for 24 years.

Two people have been injured falling from a crumbling seawall next to relatively new pedestrian pathway at Little Bucklands Beach, two residents claim.

September Half Moon Bay pontoon repairs underway

Work is underway at Half Moon Bay to repair and replace pontoons and piles severely damaged by a storm in January this year. Howick Local Board chair David Collings and Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart stopped by the site to get an update on progress this week. Caitlyn Neal captured these sombre shots of the neighbour’s home which was destroyed in Monday’s blaze.

Howick Local Board members (front) Garry Boles (second left), Adele White (second right) and chair David Collings (right) joined Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart (centre) at Half Moon Bay to see progress on repairs of the ramp and pontoons.

News broke this week that Auckland Council plans to allow freedom campers at four locations around Pakuranga. The council has listed four sites where freedom camping may be allowed – Howick Beach, Howick Library, Moore St Car Park (opposite Dominos), and the Pakuranga United Rugby Club car park in Lloyd Elsmore.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with arson following a blaze which destroyed a Somerville home on Monday. Part of Somerville Road was closed off from 4pm as fire fighters worked for several hours to get the blaze under control. Witnesses said people could be seen fleeing the home with their pets, neighbouring properties were evacuated and black smoke billowed from the house.

New councillor raring to spring into action

Paul Young is the newly elected and first-ever Asian Kiwi Councillor. Young won with 7631 votes ahead of Howick Local board member Jim Donald with 5830 votes in the Auckland Council by-election. Right: Paul Young has a one on one with Mayor Phil Goff at his Photo supplied office.

October Ross delivers evidence to cops

Ross denies leak accusations

Ross took to twitter to deny that he had any involvement in the leak and accused Bridges of using him as a scapegoat.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is firmly denying accusations that he is the person who leaked National Party leader Simon Bridges’ travel expenses and is accusing Bridges of using him as a scapegoat. Bridges called a press conference at 1pm today where he announced that the lengthy leak investigation suggests Ross is the person who leaked the information.

Bridges says Ross is a “lone wolf” MP and says his allegations of illegal activity are baseless.

Embattled MP JamiLee Ross yesterday reported National Party leader Simon Bridges to the Police for fraudulently handling party donations. Ross has also resigned from the National Party and from his role as MP for Botany today forcing a by-election. He announced he will stand as an independent in the ensuing by-election.

Four women speak out against Jami-Lee Ross

Among the projects approved by the Howick Local Board is a walkway from the Cascades Bridge to the parks walkway below. Photo Google Maps

$3m in the kitty and refusing to spend it

The Howick Local Board has a sizeable treasure chest of close to $3m and it’s not rushing to spend it. It’s not quite a “use-it-or-lose-it” scenario but Auckland Transport has expressed its concern that the cash hasn’t been allocated to project works yet.

Information has emerged claiming former Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has manipulated, intimidated and bullied at least four women during his time in Parliament. It has also been revealed that Ross has had at least two affairs in which the women have accused him of pressuring and controlling them. Ross admitted to the affairs but denies claims of bullying and intimidation. He says he will no longer be resigning his seat.

Some residents claim 2 Struan Place (left of image) has been a hotbed of trouble since building began.

Builders from ‘hell’

A Highland Park family is at its wit’s end after what they claim have been eight months of intimidation, bylaw breaches and questionable behaviour from a building site next door.

Claims of sexual assault, bullying at primary

The parents of a student at a local primary school are upset that an alleged bullying and sexual assault incident involving some of its students has been “swept under the rug”. Oranga Tamariki are now investigating the allegations.

The Howick Local Board have been given a year to come up with a proposal to upgrade and make use of the building at 34 Moore Street. Pictured from left: Howick Local board members Adele White, Katrina Bungard, David Collings (Chair), Peter Young, Bob Wichman, Mike Turinsky, Gary Boles and Jim Donald.

Crowds turnout in rain to mark Armistice Day

An estimated 600 people turned out on a rainy Sunday for a special commemorative service on Stockade Hill to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Victory in fight to save 34 Moore Street

$3m funding for Erebus memorial

The Howick Local Board is fighting the sale of 34 Moore Street and this week they saw their first victory. On Tuesday night the local board put forward a proposal to retain the land and utilise the building that was once the old Howick Borough Council Chambers. After a strong case from board members, the Finance and Performance Committee of Auckland Council has given the Howick Local Board a year to come up with a plan to upgrade and make use of the building.

After three years of advocacy work, led by Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh, the Erebus National Memorial group commends the announcement this week that the Government is allocating $3 million for an Auckland-based memorial.

First house demolished for Eastern Busway

The first of 61 houses along Pakuranga Road came crashing down last week to make way for the AMETI Eastern Busway. It’s been a quarter century in the making.

Teachers strike back

There were plenty of people tooting in support and cheering local school teachers from east Auckland as they took to the streets to protest at busy crossroads on Monday morning. It marked the first day of a rolling nationwide strikes this week after teachers voted overwhelmingly to take action in an effort to get smaller class sizes, more resources and significant pay rises. guide: Sunrise & Sunset; Best Fishing TIMES | Fishing Times; High Tides; Moonrise & Moonset.
