A large maturing pine forest on Auckland City’s metropolitan boundary which is ready for harvesting in the near future is up for sale. The 135-hectare block is located at the lower foothills of the Hunua Ranges some 50km south-east of Auckland City. Owned by the current proprietor for past 50 years, the forest was planted between 1993 and 2000 in a mix of lusitanica and radiata pine varieties. The freehold land and forest at Stevens Road are now being marketed for sale by tender through Bayleys

Stockade Hill views fight wins national coverage T
“Our legal appeal delivered a great win – a ‘special chapter’ in the Unitary Plan that paves the way for further protection.” As Times readers will know, the battle to save the outstanding 360-degree views from this iconic Howick landmark has now been going on for more than four years. Generous supporters have donated approximately $45,000 so far, helping fund the expert advice needed to stage the appeal. While this now may be heading towards a positive outcome, there are still sizeable legal bills to pay,
and the campaign team aren’t letting up on fund-raising activities. “We have to be creative in finding new ways to generate donations and keep our story in the news,” says Defencibles member Tracey Fox. “When we heard about the Stock Aid song that Tony King created, we thought – this is genius! Over 1000 people have viewed the music video on YouTube: we just hope that a few of those find their way through the Givealittle page to drop us a donation.” So what’s next in the continu-

he fight to save Stockade Hill views went national last week, as the campaign appeared on TVNZ’s popular Seven Sharp. The show featured a story about the efforts to protect the views and included Tony King’s catchy ‘Stock Aid’ song, along with interviews with a number of key people involved in the long-standing battle. As covered by the Times last week, Stock Aid was the idea of songwriter Tony King and fellow producer Phil ’PJ’ Taylor, who have created an anthemic 7-minute song and video they hope will help bolster support and raise funds for the cause. Their efforts – a New Zealand ‘first’ for a community protest song – were picked up by national TV, putting them and Stockade Hill firmly on the map. The Seven Sharp piece featured Stock Aid’s YouTube video, and included some stunning drone footage, showing viewers all over the country why this is a landmark with unique views worth preserving. Seven Sharp’s presenter Hilary Barrie exclaimed: “Go Howick - I do love a community stoush. I hadn’t realised the view was so beautiful from there – makes me want to go and visit” Whilst there have been some encouraging ‘wins’ of late, and positive noises from some members of the Local Board, the fight is definitely not over – yet. “This is by no means over and we are not giving up,” said Janet Dickson.

Grace follows in the footsteps of Saint Kentigern students, Kevin Shen (2014-2016) and Andrew Chen (2016-2018) who have also represented New Zealand on the team, with both boys selected for the 2016 team. Andrew played a significant role in mentoring Grace for her best chance at selection. Safety barrier finally in By Farida Master

Man appears in court over altercation
A man has appeared in the Manukau District Court following an incident at an east Auckland primary school on Tuesday. The Times understands that police apprehended a 31-year old man at Shelly Park School after receiving reports of concern for his wellbeing. Shortly before police arrived it’s believed the man confronted a member of staff, says Inspector Chris Barry, Acting Area Commander, Counties Manukau East. While police were apprehending the man a taser was discharged, Barry said. There were no injuries as a result. The incident took place in the school’s administration area and no children were involved. The man has been charged with assault and obstructing police. At this stage police cannot rule out further charges being laid.
jay Walia can finally have a good night’s sleep after nine years of living in constant fear that someone may crash into their house at 90 Pakuranga Road. Ajay, a taxi driver, is relieved that his prayers have been answered. It took all this time for a 24m temporary water-filled safety barrier to be installed outside his home –to act as a deterrent to speedsters turning at the lights at the crossroads of Ti Rakau Dr and Pakuranga Rd. The Times (March 21) wrote about Ajay’s fence being constantly smashed into by drivers crashing into his property just inches away from his home. In the last decade there have been around 30 incidents and a desperate Ajay and his wife have made several complaints to Auckland Council (with complaint numbers carefully recorded), police and to members of the Howick Local Board. Even pedestrians walking the footpath outside his home have had near-death experiences. While Ajay’s wife has been extremely anxious every time she hears a screech of tyres outside their home, Ajay, has campaigned tirelessly for a steel safety barrier to safeguard their family and lives of people walking on the side-

walk of the busy Pakuranga Rd. It was only when one of his clients suggested that he contact Councillor Sharon Stewart that Ajay connected with her. On visiting Ajay’s home and seeing their plight, Sharon contacted Shane Ellison, CEO Auckland Transport, to share her concerns. Soon a safety officer visited the site to assess the situation and suggested that a safety barrier be installed from surplus budget the Howick Local Board has. Embarrassed that nothing had been done about it for so long, Sharon also contacted the Times to highlight the fact that some immediate action was needed to help the family.
Ajay told the Times that his battered fence has been fixed 11 times by the insurance company. Now he can’t put in any more claims. To make matters worse, on January 24, 2018, within an hour of the fence being fixed by the insurance company it was hit again by another driver. “Someone may just die,” he said. When the Times contacted David Collings, chair of the Howick Local Board and asked why the matter hadn’t been discussed despite it being on the agenda; Mr Collings said there were too many other things on the agenda to discuss. “We need to discuss it as a board but haven’t got down to it. We have got a sugges-
tion from Auckland Transport to put up a safety barrier that would cost around $50,000 but there is a formal structure we have to follow. It’s unfortunate but it’s something we have to do,” he said. Finally, after around a month, it was not the Howick Local Board but AMETI that found a solution to the problem. Three days ago a solid safety barrier has finally been installed. Ajay is now quite relieved and can’t stop thanking Cr Stewart for her help. “We couldn’t have done it without her and the Times that highlighted the story, asked questions and got things moving. I’m truly grateful for that,” he says.

fter a deeply disturbing experience comes something positive. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has begun the next chapter of his mission to help reduce the number of Kiwis who take their own lives each year. The 33-year-old father-of-two has this week launched a podcast focusing on the serious issue of mental health. Mr Ross experienced a personal mental health crisis late last year after a high-profile falling out with the National Party’s leadership. He was detained by Police under the Mental Health Act after attempting suicide and received treatment at Middlemore Hospital’s acute mental health unit, Tiaho Mai. Mr Ross, who returned to fulltime work in January, has named his podcast JLR Unfiltered. In the first episode he talks about what led him to start the podcast, his experience with mental illness, and his views on the Government’s inquiry into mental health and addiction. Mr Ross also plans to record his discussions with various mental health experts, survivors, and policy makers. A future podcast episode will give listeners the chance to hear Mr Ross interview his psychiatrist, Dr Hugh Clarkson, about mental illness and what can be done to encourage people who are struggling to ask for help. Mr Ross says as he was thanking the hospital’s staff after leaving Tiaho Mai last year, one of the nurses suggested he use his experience and platform as an MP to speak up for others. Launching the podcast is part of his commitment to do just that, he says. “I’ll use it to try to answer

“I hope people who are suffering in silence can understand they do have a future, and they can come back to a community that values them.” The podcast episode that features a discussion between Mr Ross and Dr Clarkson will be released soon. Mr Ross asks his psychiatrist to talk about addressing Mr Ross’s mental health struggles in an effort to help other people identify when someone they know is in distress. Dr Clarkson says he wishes his patient well with his intention to “draw attention to this complex and tricky area where simple solutions just aren’t to be had”. “I think it takes some real courage to let people see something of who you really are and [that you’re] looking to produce some positive change.” ■■ To listen to JLR Unfiltered, visit www.jamileeross.podbean.com

He says he’s “overwhelmed” by the positive response he’s received from so many people since that night. “The compassion and kindness out there is incredible. I want to help New Zealanders understand how to help their friends, colleagues, and loved ones with mental health issues. “When you feel the world is closing in around you and there are only bad options, not knowing you will be treated with empathy, care and love can make it worse.

Classic fairytales come to life H
owick Children’s and Youth Theatre is presenting an old family favourite Beauty and the Beast on May 23-26 at the Harlequin Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Rd. The production has a cast of 20 hard-working students aged 12 to 14 years who have formed a very supportive and cohesive team to bring the production to life. “I have really enjoyed playing the role of the Beast,” says young actor Daniel Bailey. “It has been a great challenge to get all of the sides of his personality. He is a vain and selfish prince then an angry Beast and then there is the softer loving side of the Beast which he gets from his interactions with the gentle Beauty.” Beauty and the Beast is a story of an arrogant, selfish young prince and his castle’s servants who fall under the spell of an old enchantress. She turns him into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. The spirited, headstrong village girl Beauty enters the Beast’s castle. With the help of his enchanted servants, Beauty learns to love the Beast and he responds to

White: No forgiveness ➤➤Continued from page 1 His wife Pam reacted differently. Her first response was: “At least that b**** won’t be able to hurt my daughter anymore.” At 65, just when David thought he would retire, the bereaved granddad suddenly had the responsibility of looking after three children with the youngest nine-years-old. “How do you tell a nine-year-old that her mother has been shot dead by her father? “Though my daughter was murdered 10 years ago, we still feel the impact to this day. We’ve been scarred forever. It’s changed all of us. Samantha started wetting her bed at 10 years of age. At 18 Sam went out for dinner with her boyfriend and when the host casually asked her ‘what do your parents do’? Sam just left the dinner table, walked out of the door and sat in the gutter bawling her eyes out. She called me on my cell phone to say ‘Granddad can you please come and get me now’.” Talking about the traumatic journey for both the granddaughters and how differently they dealt with it, he said that the court battles took their toll on everyone. If there are two words in the English language that you should never have to say, they are “if only!” “I always thought that my son-inlaw, who owns a stud farm with 40 mares, had no social skills. If only I had seen the signs earlier, none of this would have happened,” he said. However after going through a gamut of emotions of hurt, anger and sorrow over the years, White felt that he needed to do something constructive about the perpetrators of crime, to end family violence. He also believed it was also important

for his grandkids to have a future with their dad. “I’m not going to live forever,” he thought. White drove down to the Tongariro Prison to visit his son– in-law. He hadn’t informed his family of what he was about to do. Greg is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum nonparole period of 11 years that could be extended to 15 or 17 years. At 74 years of age, White arranged a mediation meeting with his son-inlaw. “Though at one time I felt that 11 years is way too short for my daughter’s death, I now feel that 11 years is way too long for my granddaughter. I don’t want her to be a statistic. I spoke to the parole officer and told him of my plan of how he could get him an early release. I also want Greg to help other prisoners who have been involved in family violence.” White said that his grandchildren were horrified when he broke the news to them that he was going to get their dad out. But he said he sees a gradual change in them and believes it will bring more stability in their lives. “To stop people from falling into the river we have go to upstream and find out why they are falling,” he said. White urged people to use their local MPs to get more information so that they could use the knowledge and resources that MPs have. While White is determined to help get his son-in-law out of prison, when asked if he had forgiven him, he said, “While Pam and I have accepted it, I did tell Greg, don’t ever expect us to forgive you for what you have done.”
Grand opening of at Botany centre By Farida Master
T
he recent unveiling of the first stage of the $78 million development at Botany Town Centre lived up to the hoopla and excitement as long queues of eager shoppers lined up hours before the doors to the shopping centre opened. The new retailers on the block, global make-up brand Mecca Maxima and fashion brand H&M certainly knew how to work up the anticipation of excited shoppers as they gave away freebies (goodie bags and free cinnamon buns) as reward for all those who braved the cold and patiently waited outside for the sliding doors to open. A haka by Sancta Maria College, key speeches by Mayor Phil Goff and Mark Kirkland, AMP Capital managing director Shopping Centres, followed by cultural performances by students of Botany Downs Secondary College and performances by professional entertainers, marked the official opening. The ribbon was cut by Nick Cobham, portfolio manager AMP Capital, and Mr Kirkland. The new development at Botany Town Centre, managed by AMP Capital on behalf of the centre’s owners, is expected to be complete by the end of this year. Mr Kirkland said it has been a long journey getting the best

brands to the shopping centre and that there is more to come with the next phase of the opening. “Botany Town Centre, which we manage on behalf of its owners, is a key retail, entertainment and community hub in the greater Auckland region, and investment was crucial to ensure the centre remains a desirable destination that meets the needs of a diverse and growing community,” he said. “AMP Capital is pleased to unveil the first stage of the development and deliver a premier shopping centre experience for our customers, retailers and investors. “Thank you to the owners for their investment in this development and their support for the centre”. The new retailers include H&M, Mecca Maxima, Decjuba, The Cosmetic Clinic, Platypus, Presshouse, Stewart Dawson, Novo, Pandora, Westpac and Sushi Sushi. Also opening later in the month
is Starbucks and Postie (both previous tenants returning to the new-look centre), as well as PapaRich, Gong Cha, Connor and Sunglass Hut. Existing retailer Hallensteins will also open a new-look store soon. The development will expand the centre to 62,700sqm; including an extension to the Fashion Pavilions which will see the number of tenancies grow to more than 200 stores including new fashion and lifestyle brands. This follows the completed refurbishment of Hoyts Cinemas, now with more than 1000 luxurious powered recliner cinema seats. The upgrade will include an extended landscaped area outside the Pavilions with children’s play area and seating for dining. In addition, current upgrades are underway to enclose the outdoor area of Garden Lane. This is targeted to open in spring.

our friends from the Howick Tramping Club flew to Nelson early, hopped on a shuttle bus and were driven to Lyell, in the Buller Gorge. Thus began our five day, four night trek of the Old Ghost Road, a recently completed 85km long wilderness trail that follows the Lyell Range and then the Mokihinui River out to Seddonville at the Northern end. The track joins up the ‘ghost’ gold mining town of Lyell with other old settlements along the way and forms the longest continuous single walking and cycling track in the country. Many mountain bikers also enjoy the thrill of the experience although extreme care is required on the steep sections and switchbacks to avoid nasty tumbles, which nonetheless occur regularly. From a tramper’s perspective the track is beautifully graded and benched and although a good standard of fitness is required, it is a moderate and safe walk for most. We chose to stay overnight at four huts along the way, Lyell Saddle Hut, Ghost Lake (at 1200m the high point), Stern and Specimen Point. The first two days are generally uphill with the latter three being mainly downhill or flat. There are lots of points of interest along the way with features or views identified with names like ‘Heaven’s Door, Tombstone, Solemn Saddle, Lake Glum, The Hanging Judge and the Boneyard’. These add considerable interest for the walker. I wonder if the bikers actually saw these signs given their speed and the concentration required to keep safe on the track. The views from the tops are spectacular and we were lucky to have fine weather for the five days, with Rocky Tor being a standout escarpment on day two. This is the highest geographical feature on the walk and not one that is scaled, as the track crosses the range to the left. Ghost Lake hut is perched on the edge of a high rock face and we got quite a start when we descended the track after a night there and looked back to where we had been. Not a place to be at, if an earthquake of similar magnitude to the one in Murchison many years ago occurred again; we passed by significant fault lines caused by that quake when we traversed the valley near the ‘Boneyard’ on day three. After our last night on the trail which was at Specimen Point, a marvellous hut with jaw-dropping views down the Mokihinui River, we prepared for the final 18 km to the end. Another fine day loomed and we left early to beat the worst of the day’s heat. The Mokihinui is a very special river, and was saved from being dammed for power generation after a public outcry at the proposal in the recent past. It is far too beautiful to ruin, you only had to look at the
excitement on the faces of four German kayakers we passed along the way who had portaged river kayaks, along with their packs for about five kilometres up the track. They were intent on taking full advantage of the run back downstream amongst the rapids and canyon like walls. All too soon perhaps we arrived at our final destination, the Rough & Tumble Lodge that is run by the Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust who also manages the Old Ghost Road track. A lovely hot shower in an outdoor cubicle with the river tumbling and sparkling not far away was a fitting end to a wonderful few days spent in great company. We could have done without the sand-flies however, the little red tell-tale lumps on our legs were a reminder of the experience and what a terrific time we’d all had.

Referendum needed on End of Life Choice Bill T CP2834
he End of Life Choice Bill will soon come up for its second reading in Parliament and a vote will then be held on whether it proceeds to the next stage of the legislative process. This is the law change that would allow for voluntary euthanasia. The feedback I have received on the Bill has been mixed and I have heard strong arguments from people on both sides of the debate. As a local MP, I strive to support greater personal freedom and choice for our community. These freedoms should not be without limitation however and safeguards are vital when laws are liberalised. The Bill is not yet in a shape where it could be passed. Further amendments are needed to improve it and address shortcomings that have been identified. Parliament should look at the available options to improve the Bill before taking a final vote. In 2016, I surveyed my electorate on this matter and received 3599 responses, with 2516 in favour. That’s 70 per cent support from that survey. This result is close to opinion polls that have been published recently,

although submissions to the select committee were heavily opposed. A proposal for a referendum to be held on the matter has been put forward. I intend to support there being a referendum so New Zealanders have the final say on this complex issue. Some issues are too big to be determined by politicians alone and this is one of them. Another that is going up for a referendum is the issue of personal and recreational use of cannabis. I can see merit in medicinal use of cannabis where someone has a demonstrable health need. I am not convinced the coun-
try is yet ready to see the drug be legalised entirely, however I may be proved wrong when New Zealanders have their say at the ballot box. aving won the Most Valuable Player Award in 2016 Peter Fussell is constantly thinking of ways he can add value to his Small Business Accounting (SBA) franchise and his clients. SBA Flat Bush is centrally located at Botany Junction, a buzzing hub for small businesses, professionals and retailers. Peter has been a franchisee of SBA for the past five years and has over 300 clients. It is very apparent to him that as people are becoming more technology savvy and the Accounting Industry is moving away from traditional compliance based services. Annual Financial Accounts and Tax Returns will always be part of the services provided but many clients are wanting more. Xero Accounting Software and its real time availability of Accounting and Business Management information has been a ‘game changer’. Peter says that while he will always produce the traditional Accounting reports and tax returns for his clients he is now partnering with them to prepare Business Plans and Financial Forecasts and meeting with them regularly to see how they are ‘tracking’. of Xero and other technology to free up time so the client can focus on their business Peter says. Until very recently clients have been so busy working in their business they have spent little or no time working on it. Prior to SBA Peter’s background is in Business Banking and having run a wholesale and distribution business from start up with zero sales and turning it into a $5M operation with 18 fulltime staff within five years. Having this practical experience in running a Small Business Peter understands the journey because he has been there himself. Peter’s strength is developing and enhancing client relationships. His background in Business Banking and Company ownership gives him a real ability to add value to clients across a number of levels. To Peter it’s all about client part-

nerships and working together to achieve shared success. Peter says that by building a customer relationship he far better understands a client’s business and how best he can support them and add real value. “I am especially keen to reach out to Small Businesses and offer a much bigger package than that of just traditional Accounting. I speak in a simple and easy language without all the technical jargon making it much easier for the client to understand” he says. SBA as a group now has 63 branches in New Zealand and was Xero’s national partner of the year in 2018. The group goes from strength to strength partnering with Small Business throughout the country. Peter’s favourite saying is “what can I do to help your business”. By partnering with his clients and adopting the likes of Xero as Business Management Software his clients are well on the pathway to Business success. akuranga College are the senior high school winners of the 2019 Vector EPro8 Challenge. On Tuesday April 30, teams of from high schools across Auckland travelled to Western Springs to compete in the hotly contested finals of the Vector EPro8 Challenge. This event, which is based on a series of science, technology, engineering and mathematics-based tasks, began in Wellington in 2015 and kicked off in Auckland the following year. The challenge has proved to be extremely popular with schools all over the country and Auckland event manager Kelvin Theale believes that this is because, “schools recognise the importance of collaborative learning, and solving tasks based on limited information”. The event has previously been run for students from

intermediate and junior high school levels, however, this was the first year of the senior high school student competition (Years 11-13). Each challenge is designed to test a range of skills and this year’s theme was ‘Arcade Games’. The fact that the stu-
dents participating were all too young to remember Pacman and Space Invaders did nothing to dampen their enthusiasm and they tackled the tasks with gusto, creating a variety of automated contraptions with a variety of engineered and robotic components.
For Pakuranga College students Ben Agnew, Alexis Usal, Peita Houkamau and Jeremy Ishi, it was a nail-biting finish as scoring went down to the wire. As Alexis pointed out, “We knew we were in the top three, but then a sensor malfunctioned on our space invader, so it was pretty stressful”. When the final score declared Pakuranga College to be senior high school winners of the 2019 Vector EPro8 Challenge, the school’s Head of Science, Larraine Barton was understandably delighted. “It’s such an amazing competition!” she said. “We enter teams as part of our gifted and talented programme, because the tasks are extremely challenging. However, the whole ethos of the event is what modern learning is all about: students using what they have learned to find innovative solutions.”
Fitness classes a big hit Howick Local Board member for Botany, Peter Young, started free body work classes last year with the help of personal trainer Eric Wang and fitness enthusiast Will Liu, and going from the enthusiastic response, the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic
Association has got, he’s moved the fitness classes to accommodate large numbers of residents in and around the area. Last week, the fitness activities, that also includes a yoga class, moved from the Ormiston Activities Centre to Ormiston
Primary School hall. Now Peter, who believes that a healthy life is a happy life, is working on accommodating free dancing classes as well as providing an opportunity for residents to play table tennis, badminton and basket ball.

Thank you
On Sunday April 28, Gulf Views had an electrical fire, resulting in flames and smoke! We were provided with amazing support from emergency services and the wider community around this event for which we offer our most grateful thanks. Firstly, thanks to the staff on duty who responded skilfully, efficiently and with professionalism preventing spread of the fire and harm to the residents. Secondly, thank you to the residents for following the directions from staff co-operatively, resulting in safe evacuation of the area. Huge thanks must go to Fire Emergency NZ for their prompt attendance ensuring the safety of residents and staff methodically checking the area confirming the fire was extinguished. To the underpaid Paramedics of St John Ambulance Service you earned every cent of your pay and more, assessing residents and staff for any issues or after effects, your service was outstanding. A huge thanks to you, we are right behind your cause!

Folau: we need tolerance
So much debate over Folau’s beliefs. He is welcome to his beliefs but if he knew his Bible well, he would know that Matthew 7 cautions us ‘ Do not judge others, so that God will not judge you.’ Let’s leave judging to God and let God judge Folau in turn too. The Bible was written a long time ago

and convention then was to outlaw homosexuality. Life evolves and so too must our interpretation of the Bible. I believe we must be tolerant of LGBT people. Tolerance and respect for others of different orientation, colour, creed and nationality is sadly lacking in our world. Too many reach for the gun to settle differences. Jesus challenged a crowd who wanted a prostitute stoned with ‘the person without sin throw the first stone’ – the crowd went home. Would Folau throw the first stone? May Folau come to his senses and understand that Jesus taught us to love our enemies too. Let’s use the issue to learn tolerance. Surely the Aussie rugby board can reconcile player and sponsor, and show tolerance for the intolerant Folau. Or would they throw the stone at Folau?

Thank you for the help
At the beginning of March, I tripped on the cobble stones in Howick Shopping Centre, breaking my hip. I had to have surgery and a complete new hip. I just wanted to write and thank all the people who helped me, especially the lady who phoned for an ambulance. I am home now and doing quite well at the moment walking with crutches which I hope to get rid of shortly. Once again, a big thank you for all your help.

St Mark’s School 40th Jubilee The 40th Jubilee of St Mark’s School was celebrated on Saturday March 30 and Sunday March 31. Bishop Patrick Dunn celebrated the Mass on the Sunday. He was joined by the founding parish priest Monsignor Ray Green who also founded St Mark’s School along with Sr Barbara Maitland RNDM and the current parish priest Oliver Aro MSP and
Marists Barry Scannell and Ezio Blasoni, past PP Emile Frishe and Raphael Lobo, Deacon Chris Sullivan and the soon to be ordained Martin Wu (a past student of St. Mark’s Primary School). On the Saturday, many visitors came to visit St. Mark’s School and garden of memories was created by Arminda Wood to remember those who have gone before us.
Better have your say now before you can’t. We’re not a long way away off from someone telling us what we can say and not say. Per Simeon Brown, Andrew Little has declared a pamphlet as being racist. So where does Mr Little stand when innumerable people shout “Jesus f****** Christ”. You think that may just qualify as hateful and inciting violence? Or plain old “we’re going to f*** You Up”. Or gang patches? In the end, someone is always going to feel offended or threatened by something. And that is the problem. And who is going to define “hate speech”- Mr Little, Mr Bridges, a committee? And when a new Government with different ideologies is elected? Wait until a Church Minister or Islamic Mullah preaches against something considered offensive or threatening. Oh, say the protagonists, that may initially have to be an amendment clause on sanctity. But, for how long? Oh yes, we will have the Hitler example quoted. Read History. Not a convincing argument. Funny, no one mentions Mao Zedong, Stalin or Che Guevara. Strange that we spent the sixties and seventies fighting for no censorship of, nor control of anything. But we now have people who are so virtuous, caring and concerned and they know best.

Are these your family photos? I bought a half full packet of nice A4 high quality paper from the Sallies op shop in Rices Mall in Howick, probably about 18 months to two years ago. As I am involved in art and craft education, I thought it would come in handy one day.

Mature trees so important
There’s a snowballing awareness just in the last few months of the urgency to act radically to prevent far-reaching climate changes that are even now damaging our precious and vulnerable environment. In light of this, the impending
mass tree felling across Auckland maunga (including Pigeon Mountain), which few people seem aware of, is unconscionable – 112-150+ mature trees lost from each of the 14 reserves, adding up to a probably conservative estimate of a couple of thousand mature trees. (This is) on top of the general disregard of local councils and individuals for mature trees (and Auckland’s canopy cover was only around 18 per cent back in 2013) at a time when the world is in intensive care and every mature tree should
My 7-year-old grandson has been making a lot of paper planes recently so I decided it was time to check out what was in the packet. When I opened it and flicked through, I found all those original photos and some photo be treated as a taonga, whether they are indigenous or not. The environment and the animal life that live in them don’t differentiate. The decision to remove all of the exotic trees from the maunga, however, was made before there was such a sense of urgency about the climate. The problem now is how to stop the juggernaut that is in motion and stop the felling. It’s happening now. Several maunga have already had all exotics removed, Maungawhau/
‘adopt’ mature exotic trees as their own – adoption is a way to make the other one of us and remove the offense of their presence. The gifts trees give to us and the environment surely warrant this. Saving existing trees, including the thousands due to be felled on the Auckland maunga and an urgent emphasis on protecting mature trees, is one of the least painful changes we could possibly make among all the changes that we will need to make in order to avoid changes that will most certainly be uncomfortable, if not for our older generation, then for our tamariki and mokopuna, and for whom do we keep this world in trust for but them?

akuranga has once again shown its academic prowess at the Top Scholars Award Ceremony in Wellington, with local schools producing three of New Zealand’s 11 Premier Scholars and a fourth placing best in their subject. Yang Fan Yun, from Macleans College, and Andrew Chen and Daniel Mar, from Saint Kentigern College, were named as Premier Scholars for 2018, while Christopher Dirks, also at Saint Kentigern College, was named top of his subject in design and visual communications. To be named a Premier Scholar, students must achieve at least four New Zealand Scholarship subjects, with at least three of those at outstanding level. Yang

Fan also received the overall award for academic excellence. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says he was excited to meet the students at the Award Ceremony in Wellington last week to congratulate them personally. “Pakuranga is home to the best schools in the country, and this is clearly reflected in the academic success of Yang Fan, Andrew, Daniel, and Christopher. “To be named as one of just 11 Premier Scholars in the entire country and to achieve first in a subject are incredible achievements, and I know these four students will feel proud seeing their hard work over many years pay off.” Yang Fan Yun has been accepted into Stanford Univer-
sity, one of the most prestigious in the United States, where he will be studying Economics, Human Biology, and Public Policy. He wishes to pursue a career in medical research and improve equal access to affordable healthcare around the world. Andrew Chen this year started his studies toward a Bachelor of Science at the University of Auckland and wishes to specialise in mathematics or computer science. He is keen to make a positive contribution to the information sciences profession. Daniel Mar is also at the University of Auckland this year studying Computer Science and Finance, with a career in investment banking in the technology sector on the horizon.
No matter where in the country you live, if you get into trouble, help from above is probably closer than you think. Westpac is launching its Chopper Appeal Month to celebrate and support New Zealand’s rescue helicopters, which flew 7374 missions nationwide last year. That includes exactly 1000 flights in the Auckland region, from the Coromandel Ranges to Auckland’s west coast beaches. The Chopper Appeal aims to raise funds and awareness for the rescue helicopter services, with all donations going back to the region where they were collected. Westpac NZ general manager of consumer banking and wealth, Simon Power, says accidents can happen anywhere – including close to home. “Chopper Country extends from our rugged mountain ranges and sweeping coastlines to right over the back fence,” he says. “Whether it’s a medical event on a ski slope or a crash on a bike trail just down the road, choppers are there for Kiwis when something unexpectedly goes wrong. “It’s comforting to know that help is close by, no matter where we are. “That’s why we’re proud to have partnered with the choppers for more than 35 years.” This vital service is funded by a combination of individual donations, fundraising activities
and sponsors like Westpac. A total of $1.22 million was raised last year and the goal is to beat that again in 2019. “We rely on the kindness of our community to help those who will require our life-saving services. We’re really grateful for the Greater Auckland, Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel communities’ support,” says Mark Newman, CEO of the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust. “An average mission costs $5000, so every donation plays a crucial part in our next rescue. This support helps us to help others in their greatest time of need.” The 15th annual Westpac Chopper Appeal will run throughout May. It’s supported by fundraising activities in schools and community centres, as well as a nationwide street appeal today, Thursday May 9. Westpac funds the marketing and administration costs of the Appeal, and distributes all of the funds raised back to donors’ local rescue helicopter trust. ■■ Go to www.chopperappeal. co.nz for more information and to donate.

“At the same time, 1 per cent of sales were by people without citizenship/residency, resulting in a net purchasing figure of -0.4 per cent – or in other words, there was net selling (i.e. more noncitizens/residents sold property in Q1 than purchased it). “Clearly, last October’s Foreign Buyer Ban has now taken full effect and there have been some pretty dramatic shifts in areas such as Central Auckland and Queenstown.” For example, a year ago, 18.7 per cent of purchases in the Waitemata Local Board area (part of Central Auckland) were made by non-citizens/residents, but now that’s just 3.2 per cent – which will be Australians, Singa-

poreans, or other people buying apartments in large-scale developments. The same figure for Queenstown has dropped from 9.7 per cent to 2.7 per cent. “In light of these figures, it’s no coincidence that sales activity and property values have recently softened in these ‘prime’ markets,” he says. “Admittedly, other factors such as low affordability and tighter credit availability are still playing a key role. But the Foreign Buyer Ban is clearly having an effect too, and for would-be local buyers, there’ll be more opportunities to access the market at a lower price than might otherwise have been the case.”

t’s clear from last week’s Statistics NZ figures that October’s Foreign Buyer Ban has cut into property demand from this source, and is likely to have contributed to the softening in values in areas such as Auckland and Queenstown, CoreLogic Senior Property Economist Kelvin Davidson says. In the first three months of the year there were 204 property purchases by people without citizenship or a residency visa, 81 per cent lower than the same quarter a year ago (1083). “The latest figure equated to only 0.6 per cent of the total, easily the lowest on record (which admittedly only goes back to the end of 2016),” says Davidson.
Knock Down & Rebuild and The Auckland Unitary Plan
Real Estate Institute welcomes Welfare Advisory Group report The real estate institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the Welfare Advisory Group Report released on Friday, particularly the recommendations around increasing the range of home ownership options, boosting housing supply, affordability and healthy homes. Bindi Norwell, Chief Executive at REINZ says there are currently a number of significant issues impacting accessibility to housing, particularly for low to middle
income earners, across the country which the report rightly identifies. “Specifically, the report focuses on the need to boost supply, innovative home ownership models, healthy homes and affordability. It also focuses on the needs of people with a disability and the social housing sector. Any measures the government can implement to resolve these issues are to be welcomed,” she says. “However, it’s worth noting that some of the

Appeal for volunteers
Every week in New Zealand, 12 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. It is the number one cause of death in babies and infants, and there is no known cure. Being born with a heart defect does not discriminate. It can affect any child from every walk of life. Heart Kids supports families as they manage the challenges that come with having a heart child. The charity receives no Government funding and relies on donations and grants. On June 3, Heart Kids launches its National Awareness Week. Heart Kids is looking for kind-hearted, willing volunteers to help with the annual street appeal. The appeal takes place on Friday June 7 and Saturday June 8 across New Zealand. The money raised will go towards providing support to thousands of families around the country. If you are able to spare a couple of hours, please contact Lisa on events@heartnz.org.nz

HVBA: Jammies in June Howick Village Business Association is assisting with the Middlemore Foundation project “Jammies in June”. The HVBA is asking the community to donate children’s new flannelette/winter pyjamas for disadvantaged children in South Auckland. This initiative began in 2013 to help prevent children from being admitted to Kidz First Children’s Hospital from illnesses, such as acute rheumatic fever, during the cooler winter months. Last year the Middlemore Foundation collected nearly 20,000 pairs of pyjamas but this year they hope to double this
number to 40,000, with the generosity of the community. In addition to winter pyjamas, the Foundation is also asking for donations of good quality beanies, scarves, nighties, mittens and gloves. Swan turns into ugly duckling A
s rush defences continue to strangle what was once enterprising back play, rugby’s beautiful swan is turning into an ugly duckling. That, and the horrendous time delay in setting scrums, has been a blight to a game which no longer attracts the Super Rugby crowds it once did. Both need attention by lawmakers who have turned a blind eye to the problem for too long. What makes it so bad is that defenders not only rush up to the ball carrier, which is fine, but are also allowed to block his pass by forming a wall alongside potential receivers. The 2017 British and Irish Lions found it the best way to stifle the brilliance of Beauden Barrett in the drawn series against the All Blacks although the ordering off of Sonny Bill Williams in the second test was also a major contributing factor. Many years ago rugby league opened up its game by converting the three-yard rule to 10 metres which gave players more freedom and space to exhibit their attacking skills. I’m not advocating that union should go to that extreme but some tinkering of the present laws is needed. Rugby union can still be attractive as evident in the last round 31-31 draw between the Chiefs and Highlanders when former NZ Under 20 captain Luke Jacobson

reminded the All Blacks selectors he’s also a good No 6 prospect. Generally, however, the games were disappointing with the impressive Sharks defence nullifying the Crusaders enterprise in their 21-all result and their scrum embarrassing loosehead prop Joe Moody on more than one occasion. The same applied to Ofa Tu’ungafasi and even Karl Tu’inukuafe when the Blues also failed to cope with the Brumbies’ rolling maul when hooker Folau Fainga’a scored three tries from lineout drives. It didn’t help that lack of discipline was a major contributor to the Blues 26-21 demise although 11 consecutive penalties against them suggested Aussie referee Damian Murphy turned a blind eye to the

Ma’a Nonu tried valiantly to bust the tight Brumbies defence. Although Mitchell Hunt’s last second converted try earned the Crusaders their draw against the rugged and highly disciplined Sharks, the team badly missed Richie Mo’unga’s direction and enterprise. Hence there were few opportunities for Jack Goodhue and Braydon Ennor to develop their midfield combination in the absence of Ryan Crotty.
Of greater concern to the national selectors will be the injury that forced champion Highlanders fullback Ben Smith to limp painfully from the field. Fears that it was a knee injury were averted when it was confirmed as a hamstring but fans will be anxious he makes a quick recovery. With Damian McKenzie gone for the season, Smith and Jordie Barrett are the only two specialised fullbacks left for the World Cup although the versatile Beauden Barrett, David Havilli, George Bridge and Will Jordan are utility players who can fill the spot if need be. None, however, possess the experience of the genial Smith. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author.

Each year, one in 40 Kiwis come to us for help. The Salvation Army is proud to be on the frontlines for all Kiwis in need, regardless of their situation. We provide help where it’s needed most, to those whose need is great. Our 70 Social Service centres around the country, staffed by passionate Salvation Army workers and volunteers, help over 120,000 people in crisis each year. Please support our Red Shield Appeal and help make change, for the 1 in 40 Kiwis who need our help annually. Our annual Red Shield Appeal is when we call on people like you to give generously in support of our work on the frontlines, helping us to change lives and give hope to those in crisis. We can’t continue to do this without you and your support.
Each year, one in 40 Kiwis come to us for help—enough people to completely fill Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland four times over, and bigger than the entire population of Tauranga. It’s a massive and heartbreaking number, which speaks of the real and growing need that many Kiwis face every day in this country. While we’ve been able to provide these people with support in the form of housing, budgeting, counselling and many other services, it’s sad to think there are even more families out there who desperately need help. With your support, we can give these people the help needed to make genuine change in their lives.

Teens raising funds for elite golf tour
T
hree local teenagers will be going on a 19 day tour of California and Texas in July. Ryan Forde, Henry Wang and Jordan Jones out of the Pakuranga Golf Club hope to gain valuable knowledge and information on college golf in America. They will be playing two elite junior tournaments and attending a three-day college golf camp. The 3 day training camp is being run by over 16 of the best university golf coaches in the USA, including Stanford, Duke and Notre Dame and is limited to 50 players from around the world. The young men will gain invaluable golf and life experience and an understanding of what it will take to get to college/university golf in America after they finish high school here in New Zealand. With the trip costing around $14,000 each, the boys and their families and the club are frantically fundraising. As well as a Givealittle page, there is a Cheeky Niner golf day planned for Friday afternoon May 24, or a movie evening on June 6 (contact Dion Jones 021723377). “We are all very grateful for the

support being shown for this trip of a lifetime,” said Dion, Jordan’s dad. “Ryan, Henry and Jordan could not do it without the kind generosity of many people.” Kerryn Jamieson of Kerryn Jamieson Golf said he has been building the junior development programme at Pakuranga Golf Club over the past three years. “Within our programme I have a development group that now has the skills and maturity to come with me to America in July,” he said. “We are going to be taking three young men – Henry Wang, the current senior club champion; Ryan
Forde, who is on a hot streak, just shot 67 nd 65 at Pakuranga in the past two weeks; Jordan Jones, who just made the Auckland Junior development squad. “We are asking for your help. We have had some great support on Saturday mornings at our BBQs and we will be running a 9 Hole Corporate Golf Day on Friday May 24. We are also running movie nights, quiz nights and taking donations.“ Please help support these young men in a trip of a lifetime. Donations can made through the page: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/collegegolfexposuretour#.”
Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Prems found some rhythm to completely dominate a strong but undisciplined Otahuhu squad 77-7 on Saturday. It also secures the Prems a spot in the top 8. PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini said the opening 40 minutes was difficult despite the Pakuranga Prems dotting down five times. “They’re hard games to play when the opposition has no structure,” he said. “In the second half we attacked a bit more especially in our backs.”
The Prems have two tough matches ahead – the Rifles at home on Saturday and then Waitemata the following weekend.
