Cat taped up and left for dead, SPCA investigating By THERESE HENKIN

A

n investigation has been launched to find those responsible for reportedly wrapping a cat in masking tape and leaving it for dead in Whitford. An SPCA spokesperson said the cat was in critical condition when it arrived at the Auckland SPCA last Friday.

“We can confirm that a cat was brought SPCA’s Auckland centre after it was found reportedly wrapped in masking tape three weeks ago,” says the spokesperson. A post on a community Facebook page reported that the tabby cat was found on the side of the road in Whitford. The spokesperson said the finders of the cat have been caring for it for the last three weeks

until it was brought to the SPCA for medical treatment. “The cat was examined by SPCA vets who found that it was critically unwell,” she says. “The cat was unable to stand, suffering from likely end-stage renal failure and severe dehydration. It had difficulty breathing and was cyanotic [bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes,

caused by inadequate oxygen levels]. Unfortunately, the SPCA vets had to make the difficult decision to euthanise the cat on humane grounds.” ■ SPCA inspectors would like to hear from anyone with information about this cat leading to the condition in which it was found. Any information can be reported to 256-7300.

White crosses in the field of remembrance Around 280 commemorative white crosses will be installed in the Field of Remembrance at Stockade Hill on Sunday. While 30 commemorative Anzac crosses are prenamed, members of public can adopt a cross and put the names of their loved ones or ancestors they’ve lost in war on one of the crosses. President of Howick RSA Est. 1972 Mike Cole says that the Field of Remembrance is for everyone and that people in

the Howick ward who have lost men and women in conflict are invited to dress up the crosses “but please don’t move them”. He says that as long as they are in good taste, “we are happy for them to adopt them”. No permanent marker pens should be used on the crosses either. The crosses will be put up on Sunday and will remain there for a week. They will be removed on April 29.

Anzac Day — Wednesday, April 25

Young ones look up to our local war heroes By Farida Master Howick RSA is helping students broaden their knowledge of what Kiwis endured in previous military campaigns. “We were aware that a lot of New Zealand soldiers died in World War I but didn’t know that almost 250,000 men were wounded or lost their lives in the First World War,” said a student leader of Howick Intermediate after recently listening to three war heroes at the Howick RSA. “I had no idea what the Last Post meant,” said a student of Pakuranga Intermediate School. “Now after hearing the war heroes’ talk, I know what the bugle call really means.” As a way of getting young ones involved in the countdown to Anzac Day, Howick RSA arranged for three war heroes to share their stories with student leaders from nine local primary and intermediate schools. Students of Pakuranga Heights, Ormiston Primary, Bucklands Beach Primary, Howick Intermediate, Farm Cove, Wakaaranga, Sunny Hills, Somerville Intermediate

and Our Lady Star of the Sea listened as Vietnam War hero Barry Dreyer, along with Andrew Lister and President of Howick RSA Mike Cole spoke about the meaning of Anzac Day, Poppy Day, dawn service and threw light on the Last Post, ode and reveille. They impressed on children the gravity of war. “Every family in New Zealand was affected by post traumatic stress disorder of the First World War,” said Mr Cole. “War is not like they show in the movies-they don’t get up

and keep going ...they die. “Anzac Day is not to glorify war but to remind ourselves of the sacrifices made by New Zealand men.” Students of different schools also gathered around Howick RSA’s oldest member, 99-yearold Eric Wilson, a Second World War army veteran, with a sharp mind who could recollect every detail of the war. On Sunday Howick RSA in partnership with Uxbridge will host a children’s art exhibition of Poppy and Anzac Day. All are welcome.

his Anzac day, Travis Allan will wake up before the crack of dawn. He’ll rug up warm and head into Howick with his father to take part in the Anzac Dawn Parade. It’s a routine he knows well – he’s been doing it his whole life. This Anzac Day Travis will turn five and he will celebrate his birthday as he has done since he was born – attending the Howick Dawn Service at Stockade Hill. It’s a special tradition Travis’ father, Lance Corporal Christopher James Allan holds dear to his heart. Allan served in the New Zealand Army for more than five years and currently serves in the Territorial Force, now known as the Army Reserve. “It’s something we can do together as father and son and I love being able to share with him something that is so important to me,” Allan says. “I am raising him to understand the sacrifices that people made and the importance of honouring those soldiers.” Allan says each year is more enjoyable than the last for Travis as his understanding of the purpose behind the parade grows. “I think as he gets older he is able to participate more and ask questions, and hopefully one day he will thank me for sharing this with him from

Dreyer receives service medal L

ong time Howick resident Colonel Barry Dreyer has had his work and service to veterans recognised with the Defence Meritorious Service Medal – but he’s taking it in his stride “It was all a bit of a surprise actually,” he laughed. Mr Dreyer was on a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean when he received the news of his award in March, and says he immediately shared the good news with his wife. Since his retirement from the New Zealand Army in 1988, Mr Dreyer has provided 30 years of continuous voluntary support and service to the New Zealand Army veterans’ community and to a wide

range of community organisations with links to the Armed Forces. In 2010 he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, an honorary, unpaid position that serves as the domestic head of the Regiment with the role of fostering esprit de corps, promoting community interest, advising senior officers and commanders on regimental matters and maintaining close relationships with their counterparts in Commonwealth forces. As Colonel Commandant, Mr Dreyer’s contribution has been to serving and retired soldiers and their families, to regimental heritage and, as a consequence, to the historical legacy of New Zealand.

Col Barry Dreyer (Ret).

Mr Dreyer is an active supporter of the Royal New Zealand Artillery Association and was made a Life Member in 2012. Through the association and other veterans’ organisations he has become well known to the community, especially Vietnam veterans. He is extraordinarily active and forthright in providing assistance and advice to the families of living and deceased veterans, travelling extensively throughout the country at his own expense maintaining contact with those in need. As a result of this advocacy, he has had regular contact with the Ministers of Defence and Veterans Affairs on individual welfare cases.

He was also a vocal champion of the review of the Veteran Support Act 2014 and the repatriation of the remains of New Zealand servicemen from foreign graves. Of particular importance has been his effort to create a living bridge between the few remaining veterans from World War Two and the recent veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq. As a consequence of this work, the Regimental Association has had a dramatic rise in the number of members from the post-Vietnam era. These modern “veterans” were, until Mr Dreyer’s appointment, a missing part of the veterans’ landscape.

The Minister said, “I am impressed with the vision shown by NZMA to open this facility to train more builders, painters, plumbers and electricians. Last year thousands of NZMA graduates and students were placed into jobs. I have no doubt there will be a high demand for your trades students. I look forward to seeing more

Emotional reunion: cat found after year missing By Therese Henkin

I

t’s been exactly one year since Icy the cat went missing from her home in Pakuranga. Five days before the one year anniversary of her disappearance, Icy and her owner were joyfully reunited with the help of a microchip. “I was so shocked when I received the call. There were a lot of tears shed that day,” says owner, Julie. “I really had given up all hope of ever seeing her again or knowing what happened to her.” Julie says had Icy not been micro-chipped and correctly registered to the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), she believes she ever would have seen her again. “I cried so many happy tears and I cannot thank the person who found her enough for doing the right thing and bringing her in to be scanned,” Julie says. Icy was found hanging around a home in Cockle bay. Valerie Lofthouse, who had only recently moved into the property, says she knew such a beautiful cat must belong to somebody and when she didn’t leave after a few days, she knew she must be lost. “She was very skittish and it took me a while to gain her trust but when I did, I knew I had to find out if anybody was missing her.” Sommerville Veterinary Centre vet nurse Jessica Muehlauer says this heartfelt reunion serves as a timely reminder to pet owners of

the value of micro-chipping. “It was such an emotional day in the clinic seeing an owner so overjoyed to have found her beloved cat,” Jessica says. “It’s incredible to see pets and their owners being reunited even after all this time.” And it’s not the first time she has seen microchips help owners find lost pets, she says. Last year the Sommerville Veterinary Centre assisted in reuniting another cat owner with their beloved pet after she had been missing for more than two years. “It just goes to show how valuable and important it is to make sure that your pet is micro-chipped in case they are ever lost or stolen.” She says inserting the micro-chip is relatively inexpensive and non-invasive. But she urges pet owners to remember that getting the microchip is just one part of the puzzle. “Often people forget that they have to register their pet on the NZCAR website, and there’s no use having a micro-chip that when scanned shows that the pet is linked to nobody,” she says. If your pet goes missing, she says, you can also make a note of it on your registration so that if your pet is scanned an alert will immediately pop up. ■■ For more information on micro-chipping call Sommerville Veterinary Centre 5370111 or visit www.animalregister.co.nz

Preet & Co in liquidation owing $14 million By Nick Krause High-flying Preet & Co Real Estate (PEL) and Preet & Co Rentals (PRL) have now gone into liquidation owing creditors at least $14 million. PEL held the franchise rights for the Harcourts’ brand for south and east Auckland for the sales arm of the business. It had 10 branches with offices in Botany, Ellerslie, Otahuhu, Howick, Manukau (two sites), Pakuranga, Papatoetoe, Meadowlands and Manurewa. Administrators – and now liquidators – Meltzer Mason were called in on November 22 “on appointment by a secured creditor” to allow the insolvency group to take control of the affairs to see if there was a way forward for “an otherwise successful business”. Company administration aims to help a company repay debts in order to escape insolvency if possible, whereas liquidation is

the process of selling all assets before dissolving the company completely. A Meltzer Mason report to creditors says the sole director and shareholder of the group, Gurpreet Grewal, was referred to Meltzer Mason by a firm of accountants who acted for the shareholding trusts for the Harcourts group in New Zealand. The report says anomalies were discovered in the trust accounts of the Preet companies around August/September and are being investigated by the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). For about a month prior to the appointment of Meltzer Mason, the administrators had some involvement while Mr Grewal worked with Harcourts and a secured creditor to see if a plan could achieve full repayment of all creditors. Ultimately, this did not occur and the administrators were brought in. Mr Grewal tried to keep

a lid on things assuring the administrators he was committed to paying all creditors, adding that once the appointment of Meltzer Mason became public, the business would be “rendered useless”, the report says. The administrators say Preet & Co had traded relatively well but had expanded quickly. There was significant secured debt and the companies had significant funding requirements but were unable to secure financing. As a result of the REAA investigation, Mr Grewal had volunteered to relinquish his licence while investigations were undertaken. “In the administrators’ assessment, the rapid expansion, coupled with potentially overvalued acquisitions and the high level of borrowing, led to working capital deficiencies,” the report says. “It is relevant that this programme of growth was undertaken when the value

of real estate in Auckland was rising annually at very high percentages.” As to the companies’ financial accounts, draft figures for the year to March 31, 2017 record a $380,610 profit on turnover of $12.688 million for PEL and a net loss of $2232 on a turnover of $852,210 for PRL. Net assets were recorded on the balance sheets as $1.695m for PEL and net liabilities of $127,930 for PRL. As at the date of appointment of Meltzer Mason, there were two secured creditors – Bank of New Zealand (first ranking) owed $10.179m and Harcourts Group (second ranking) for $1.2m. Unsecured creditors are the Inland Revenue ($2.262m), known trade creditors - Preet & Co Real Estate ($859,749) and known creditors - Preet & Co Rentals ($20,817) for a total of $14,521,951 as at November 22, 2017. The Times has attempted to contact Mr Grewal for comment.

New chef shakes things There’s an easy up at The Good Home way to hear again DIANE ANDREW knew she wasn’t hearing well but didn’t realise how much she was missing out on until she experienced wearing hearing aids. Before taking up a free hearing test and trial with Focus Hearing I wasn’t aware just how deaf I actually was. My hearing hasn’t been good for as long as I can remember (probably hereditary as my father and brother both wear hearing aids). This is where Daniel at Focus Hearing came in Daniel Kim the picture and made a big difference to my quality of hearing. Obviously, I was very hesitant about getting hearing aids, even embarrassed, but Daniel has fitted me with ones that no one seems to notice unless I point them out – and I’m proudly pointing them out to everybody as I absolutely love them! They have made a massive improvement to the quality of my life. Last year I took advantage of a Bay Audiology free hearing test, where they basically just confirmed what I already knew – I certainly did have hearing loss and that I had to come back for another appointment, at a cost of about $50 to get a more advanced test done. Daniel gave me a complete hearing test for free, and then fitted me with suitable hearing aids the following

week, followed by a twoweek trial. I had the option of extending the trial a bit longer if I needed to (perhaps if I needed some adjustments, but I didn’t). So from the first appointment to the third, no money had exchanged hands. Daniel explained all the cleaning and maintenance of the hearing aids very clearly and made sure my new hearing aids are working perfectly for me. A huge plus is that I am paying them off over an interest-free, 12-month period. Daniel hooked me up with Q Card finance, making the whole process as easy as possible. He’s a really easy-to-understand, thorough guy and makes getting hearing aids very unintimidating. I’m really impressed with how easy he made the process and how he offers a free trial of the actual hearing aids with no obligation to purchase if you’re not happy. My only regret now is that I didn’t do something about my hearing loss earlier.

He’s experienced, passionate and has his sights set on putting Howick’s favourite little pub on the map. The Good Home’s new chef, AJ Jaiswal has hit the ground running developing all new winter menus which customers will get to try for themselves come May. “Pub grub with a twist,” he calls it. “From the outside people assume they will just get ordinary pub grub like steak, chips and veggies but I want customers to get so much more,” he says. “We still do all of those things, but we do it with a bit of modern flare which you wouldn’t expect in a pub.” AJ grew up in India and says his love of food meant taking up cooking professionally was a no brainer. The kitchen soon became his second home and AJ went on to make his mark as a chef for world-renowned international brands Sheraton, Sofitel and later for SkyCity. He says that since moving to New Zealand he has worked alongside some of the country’s greatest chefs and he is determined to apply his experience to his new venture. It may be a step away from what he has done in the past, but AJ says his shared vision with owner, Barry O’Shaughnessy, is what encouraged him to make the move to The Good Home. “Our vision is based on the importance of freshness and seasonal ingredients,” he says. “Here in New Zealand we are blessed with an abundance of fresh produce and beautiful ingredients and I want these to be incorporated into every meal I create.” His new challenge, he says, is to bring the people of Howick a modern, fresh pub dining experience in their own backyard. “I believe people should be able to enjoy

Chorus wants to hear your voice

By Kelly Teed

T

he energy and passion of the all-male City of Sails Barbershop Chorus is easy to see. In fact, it shone through right from the very first email I exchanged with the group. In the tiny coffee shop in the bustling Pakuranga Plaza where we met, local men Robert Kurz, Bryce Turner, Peter Smith, Ken Hughes and Ron Topp recounted how they each got into barbershop. Stories ranged from searching the group online years after participating in barbershop at school, to seeing an ad in the New Zealand Herald – and even in the Howick and Pakuranga Times! They’re a fun bunch – and they’re welcoming east Auck-

landers to jump on board for the 2018 season. On Monday night they held a new members’ night where anyone interested could come be a “fly on the wall” and see what it’s all about - but anyone interested need not wait for an open night to check it all out. The group is quick to assure people there’s no need to be scared - simply relax, listen and find out more ... you can even sing if you want (but that’s not compulsory!). If nothing else, pop along for the free cuppa and biscuits. Being the oldest chorus in New Zealand, the Auckland City of Sails Chorus has maintained a fantastic reputation within the barbershop industry winning multiple competition titles. The group, which started at

Newcomers are welcome to visit or join at any time. It’s comparable to free singing tuition, said Mr Kurz. “We spend a lot of money on keeping that in place… it’s very important to us.” ■■ Rehearsals take place weekly 7:30pm at Balmoral Bowling Club, 14 Mont Le Grand Road, Mount Eden and there is no age limit.

Buddha’s Day at Flat Bush attracts thousands All roads in east Auckland led to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush on April 7 and 8. The popular two-day event celebrated Buddha’s Birthday Multicultural Festival for World Peace and attracted more than 8500 people who partook in a range of activities including a baby and children blessing ceremony, taking refuge in a triple gem and light offering ceremony and the fun Prince Siddhartha costume competition. Other special attractions included art exhibitions, multicultural performances, free medical services, vegetarian food stalls, as well as cultural and community stalls. Plenty of visitors from

all over New Zealand were spotted participating in the tea mediation and bathing the Buddha ceremony. With a change of government, the official ceremony on April 8 was attended this year by Minister of Ethnic Communities Jenny Salesa as well as Bill Chen, a representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New Zealand. Also spotted was Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy, Counties

Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, along with other religious leaders, local politicians, community representatives and local school principals. The Abbess of the temple, venerable Manshin expressed her gratitude to everyone present as she acknowledged the efforts of volunteers. She thanked the New Zealand Police and schools who work together with the temple to achieve positive outcomes for the community.

Mystery of missing flagpole solved By Nick Krause

T

he mystery of the missing flag pole on Moore Street has been the topic of much consternation over the past few years, not least amongst those in the company of the inquisitive and particularly dogged Morrin Cooper, proud former Mayor of of Howick. But doggedness can pay off. Mr Cooper told the Times he spent three of four years searching for the flag pole which used to stand guard outside the former Howick Borough Council premises on the corner of Moore Street and Fencible Drive. “The flag pole mysteriously disappeared,” he said. “I’ve been on the trail of it ever since.” So what’s so special about this flag pole? It transpires it’s a naval flag pole with crosstree which was put in place by Mr Cooper’s mayoral predecessor, the late Whitford Blundell. Mr Blundell, named after the village just down the road, was a bridge builder and Mayor of Howick from 1966 to 1974. Mr Cooper doesn’t know where the 12-metre high flag pole came from, nor obviously where it went for several years. However he does know that the late Bill Mudgway - the Eye

in the Sky and golden voice of Springs Speedway, and Howick’s Santa Parade for many years – was public relations officer at Howick Borough Council. “It was his job to put the flag up every morning,” Mr Cooper said. Sam Isaia, the senior maintenance delivery coordinator – operational management and maintenance community facilities official from Auckland Council, was there with a team to put the flag pole back in its rightful place. Mr Isaia only joined in July and after much determination discovered the flag pole in an old depot where it had been deposited by an old contractor. And it was not in the best condition either as the base was rotten through. That’s been skilfully taken care of and the flag pole, said Mr Cooper, is back where it belongs. What next? He’s keen to know why council hasn’t let community groups rent the vacant building, formerly home to Howick Police. “I also want to get in there and draw those curtains...it looks so untidy.” He’ll also ensure he or Wally Rice of Rice’s Mall in Howick will see to the flags there and make sure it is flown at half mast on Anzac Day next Wednesday.

Local teacher and Miss World finalist Natasha Unkovich has raised more than $15,000 in a string of local fundraising events. Over the weekend Unkovich held a movie fundraiser at The Monterey, a sausage sizzle and with the help of her sponsor Angela Rudling, a charity auction at Basalt in an effort to raise funds for Annie’s Lifeline. Annie’s lifeline is the chosen charity for the Miss World NZ fundraising efforts, and goes towards helping give young adults who have suffered from mental illness or

youth suicide survivors a scholarship to kick start their studies. “It was a whirlwind weekend and I am so happy to share that we raised more than $15,000 for an incredible cause so I am very happy,” she says. “I cannot thank the community enough for coming together and for their generosity in donating to such a worthy organisation that helps give those suffering from mental illness a way into study.” Unkovich will take the stage at Miss World NZ on May 5.

Community police officer moves on T

here are so many unsung heroes play a role in shaping our next generation, and Constable Merve Hotter has been one of them. Working closely with local schools, Constable Hotter, the schools’ community officer Counties Manukau East, recently decided to move away from the area due to a new role he has accepted as a highway officer working out of Pokeno. Elim Christian College hosted a special morning tea to farewell Constable Hotter for having worked closely with the Travelwise team and the younger ones in terms of crossing the road safely, giving talks in classes and other safety measures he introduced. Students read out poems and presented him with specially made cards. “I have absolutely loved working with all of you and will miss that part of the role but the travel demands have become too demanding,” he said. “For all those that have made appointments with me for term 2, I will be arranging someone else to come visit you and will let you know asap who that will be. I will be seeing out appointments made for the rest of this term. “Thank you all for your support over the last three years. Some of you were very tolerant with me at the start and I thank you for that.” Neetha Mudhan, assistant campus lead-Golflands Campus of Elim Christian College, shares some images that speak louder than words of children interacting with the much loved constable with the Times.

Government proposing to ban the use of ‘teacher’ I’m greatly concerned about the proposed Education (Protecting Teacher Title) Amendment Bill currently making its way through Parliament which, as you may guess from its name, seeks to protect the title of teacher. But protect it from what? The Bill being supported by the Labour/ Greens/NZ First coalition government will make it illegal for people to call themselves a teacher if they are not fully qualified and registered as one, and anyone who breaches this rule is liable to pay a $2000 fine. You may ask what’s wrong with that, and the simple answer is to point out all those who teach without being registered teachers. Think teacher aides, music teachers, ballet teachers, dance teachers; the list goes on. They will all have to find a new name to define the good work that they do for fear of breaching the law and facing a massive fine. This approach undermines and devalues the important work that

so many educators do and suggests a nanny state approach that the Labour/NZ First/Greens Government seems adamant on pursuing. There are many people who call themselves teachers without working in a traditional school structure, like those who teach music and dance, and what difference does it make to force them to go by another title? National believes there are far greater priorities for education, especially when we already have provisions in the law to penalise those who may be misleading people about their qualifications or registration as school teachers. This Bill is a clear-cut case of a Government fixing a problem that doesn’t exist, while creating another one in the process. ■ Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

The event will be held at Pakuranga Library as part of the Arts Out East festival and offers the chance for minorities to find common ground with other in a safe place. The workshop then leads into a photo series exhibition which delves into the lives of the diaspora generation and those who feel disconnected from their roots or mainland country because of migration. I am writing in response to Jim Donald’s letter – “We’re all about doing” (Times, April 12). Jim will have to do more than clear a few culverts in Macleans Park to make up for his support of unnecessary land swaps between the park and Macleans College. When he has finished clearing culverts, we would like him to stain – in a recessive colour please Jim – that visual catastrophe the school constructed that was shown in last week’s Howick and Pakuranga Times. Council must step in

I have always advocated $1000 fines for dropping litter on Auckland’s

beaches posted on the litter bins provided. You can add to that a liquor ban. The southern end of Eastern Beach picnic area, which is a particular troublespot in both regards, should also have a security camera. Last Friday on my daily walk to pick up litter on the section of the beach affronting the said picnic area, a group had left half a dozen beer bottles, one of which had deliberately been shattered leaving razorsharp glass pieces scattered in the sand and this is an area where mums take their littlies swimming. Action is required by the mayor and the Auckland City Council.

The society, founded in 1920, has been promoting the opportunity to high school students throughout the country. Zariab had to write an essay detailing his passion for the science and why he wanted to attend in order to win one of the 10 spots. “I heard about the annual conference from our earth and space science teacher, who mentioned it in class and I was quick to grab that opportunity,” says Zariab. The conference will have a mix of amateur astrologers with a strong core group of experts, mainly made up of university professionals. Talking about his affinity with the stars he says, “What sparked my interest in astronomy was the first time I looked through a telescope at the age of seven. “I stood on the balcony and spent the night gazing at the moon, with all its craters and hills that we can’t see with the naked eye- along with other stars and the nearby Mars—I was hooked onto it. With so many unanswered questions, there’s no going back. That’s what makes astronomy so special.” Astronomers from throughout New Zealand and overseas will be at the conference. “I have never attended a conference like this before and I really look forward to it, especially meeting fellow astronomy enthusiasts and experts at the conference,” Zariab says.

The winning team from Sancta Maria College represented by Meggy Laguda, Times photo Farida Master Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg and Kelly Mascarenhas.

Is there really gender stereotyping in schools? By Farida Master Is stereotyping prevalent in New Zealand School? The Zonta Club of East Auckland thought it was worth debating at the annual schools debate between Botany Downs Secondary College and Sancta Maria College on Tuesday evening. The debate, in its 12th year, was hosted at the Howick Club and had the Sancta Maria College team of Danica LoulieWijtenburg, Kelly Mascarenhas and Meggy Laguda astutely argue in the affirmative— this house believes gender stereotyping is prevalent in New Zealand schools. The Botany Downs Secondary College team represented by Farzana Rahimi, Shaquille Chandra and Akaash Shahikumar pointedly

questioned: ‘do you think Jacinda Ardern with a baby along the way would be Prime Minister of the country if there was gender stereotyping in New Zealand?’ Do subjects offered at school have a gender? Do sporting games have a gender? Why don’t girls take up rugby and wood work and instead opt for fashion designing and food technology? Does leadership have a gender? These were some of the provocative questions which arose. The adjudicators had a hard time mulling over the points and finally it was the all-girl team from Sancta Maria College who won the shield. The win was an equaliser with both Botany Downs Secondary College and Sancta Maria College having won the annual school debate shield exactly six times each in the last 12 years.

our employment agreement is a record of the conditions of work that you have agreed to and if you’re an employee you must have a written employment agreement – it’s the law. “Even if you don’t have a written employment agreement, you are still entitled to minimum employment rights,” says Louise Boswell from CAB Pakuranga. “For example you can’t be paid less than the minimum wage, and once you’ve worked at a place for a while you’re entitled to paid annual leave, sick leave and bereavement leave.” “If your employer wants you to work a 90 day trial, they can only do this if it’s in your written employment agreement and you haven’t worked for them before. You also must sign the employment agreement before you start working for them. During the trial period you are still entitled to the minimum

employment rights.” Louise says, “Another thing is that your employer can’t change your conditions of employment without your agreement. For example changing your hours of work, your pay rate or the type of work you do. These changes need to be recorded on your employment agreement and signed by both of you.” Recently a client emailed to say she had been working in a permanent full time position for five months. She is planning to move overseas towards the end of year. Her question was if her employer finds out she is leaving are they allowed to fire her. Answer: The employer cannot fire you without having grounds for the termination unless there

is a serious misconduct. They can only dismiss you by giving written notice stating the grounds for termination. See website employment. govt.nz “There is a lot of information to help you know your employment rights, on www.cab.org.nz but sometimes it helps to talk about your issue with someone. You can just pop into CAB Pakuranga] at Pakuranga Library Building or call 576-8331 and we can help you work through your options.” ■■ Citizens Advice Bureau is an independent community organisation offering a free, confidential and independent service of information, assistance and referral from 82 locations stretching from Northland to Invercargill. Bidois to stand for Northcote seat By Nick Krause

H

owick’s Dan Bidois, a Harvard-educated economist, is standing as National Party’s candidate to contest the Northcote seat left vacant after Jonathan Coleman’s resignation from Parliament triggered a byelection. “I grew up in Howick and spent my formative years out east, but am hugely passionate about Northcote and the communities here,” he told the Times. “They deserve a champion, someone who will stand up to the Labour Government and council and make sure there is strong opposition to things like the fuel taxes which will hit Aucklanders hard.” Bidois is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with bone cancer - Ewing’s Sarcoma - shortly after finishing school at the age of 15 and had chemotherapy and an operation to save his leg. After recovering, Bidois worked as a butcher’s apprentice. “I’ve been a fighter all my life and I’m really excited about the race. National isn’t taking anything for granted though, and we’ll be working hard over the next few weeks,” he said. Bidois will be going up against Shanan Halbert, also 35, who is also well educated and of Maori descent. Halbert lives in the elec-

He is currently a strategy manager at Foodstuffs North Island and is moving to Northcote soon. He has more than nine years’ experience working as an economist and strategist across New Zealand, Asia and Europe, including three years with the OECD, two years with Deloitte and time at several economic think-tanks in Auckland and Kuala Lumpur. His industry experience spans the retail, agriculture, renewable energies and public sector. Bidois holds a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University in the USA, where he attended as a

He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Auckland, where he served as President of the Auckland University Students’ Association (AUSA) in 2006. Prior to university, Bidois attended Star of the Sea Primary, Howick Intermediate, and Howick College. He left high school at aged 15 to complete a butchery apprenticeship with Woolworth’s NZ. He is of European and Maori (Ngati Maniapoto) descent and is the youngest of four children. Outside of work, Bidois enjoys spending time with family and friends, running and watching the NZ Warriors in the NRL. He was one of five candidates who in March 2017 contested the Pakuranga electorate seat which was last year vacated by National MP Maurice Williamson, an MP for 30 years. Among the candidates standing for the very safe Natioanl seat were Howick Local Board deputy chair Katrina Bungard, businessman and former Bucklands Beach local Sang Cho, Highbrook banker and Manurewa Local Board member Simeon Brown and awardwinning chief executive Rahul Sirigiri. Brown was selected and comfortably won the Pakuranga seat for National at the September General Elections.

New community centre opens doors Botany has a new community centre – the Kotahi Community Centre at the BotanyLife Community Church. Kotahi comes from the Maori word kotahitanga meaning unity or togetherness. A modern community space, which is flexible and wellequipped, has been designed with family events, kids’ parties community group meetings, business meetings, clubs and fitness groups in mind. The spacious auditorium can accommodate up to 120 people and is well-equipped with seating, tables, staging, lighting and AV systems. There’s also a café/ kitchen space that is hired out along with the auditorium. The meeting room can fit in around 35 people and is ideal for meetings, informal teaching sessions and smaller social gatherings. The search began in February 2006 when BotanyLife Community Church was in its second year. “We couldn’t have done [it] without significant support,” says BotanyLife’s community pastor Mark van Wijk. Physical or financial assistance from the Howick Local Board, Lottery Grants board, Lion Foundation, Placemakers Pakuranga, Speedy Signs and Christian volunteer builders MMM NZ helped translate the

dream into a reality. From toddlers dancing during Mainly Music mornings to photography groups and fitness classes, the local community has already started making use of the centre. More recently there have been engagement and anniversary celebrations held in the main auditorium, and several groups from local intermediate schools have stayed overnight as part of leadership building camps. Birthday parties and community meetings are also planned, says Kotahi manager Mel Thorburn. “Anyone that needs a space to train, meet or celebrate – you’re welcome!” ■■ Contact: Charlotte Gray charlotte@botanylife.org.nz / 021 287 5707.

ust released March rental statistics show that New Zealand rental prices have continued to grow over the past year. “There have been so many cost and regulatory increases over the last few years that it isn’t a surprise that rental prices are increasing as they are,” said NZ Property Investors’ Federation (NZPIF) executive officer Andrew King. “Unfortunately the situation looks likely to continue.” In order to remove monthly variations, the NZPIF has averaged three months of rental prices for the year ended March 2018 and compared this to the same period in 2017. Overall, rental prices are up 6.1 per cent to $433 per week. This is a higher price rise than during the last two years when rental prices increased 3.4 per cent in the year to March 2017 and 3 per cent in the year to March 2016. Hutt Valley had the largest increase at 17.1 per cent to $413pw. However this area can be quite volatile due to low numbers of new rentals. Porirua was next with an 11.6 per cent increase to $407pw, although Porirua statistics can also be quite volatile. Wellington Central rents increased by 6.8 per cent showing that the region overall had the highest rental price increases. Nelson saw the third highest rental price rises at 9.2 per cent to $382. Auckland rental increases ranged from 4.2 per cent in Waitakere to 5.2 per cent on the North Shore. Twelve of the 17 main areas had

Have your say on whether tenants should pay letting fees The Social Services and Community Committee is seeking submissions on the Residential Tenancies (Prohibiting Letting Fees) Amendment Bill. The bill aims to ensure that costs associated with letting a rental property are met by the landlord, who benefits from letting a rental, rather than the tenant. To achieve its aim, the bill would

amend the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 to prevent tenants paying letting fees for services provided by any person in relation to a tenancy. The bill would make it unlawful to charge a tenant a letting fee, with a maximum level of exemplary damages set at $1000. Landlords, or their agents, could still seek reimbursement from a

tenant for expenses reasonably incurred as a result of a tenant, assigning, subletting, or parting with possession of their interest in a tenancy. Gareth Hughes, chair of the Social Services and Community Committee, said: “With more and more Kiwis renting, the issue of letting fees as a barrier and a pinch-point to housing is impor-

tant. The Committee is looking forward to hearing from both landlords and tenants on this bill.” ■■ Tell the Social Services and Community Committee what you think. Send your submission on the bill by midnight on Wednesday 23 May 2018. Visit us at www. parliament.nz.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, April 19, 2018 — 21

What’s happening with the OCR? T

he Reserve Bank’s current forecasts suggest that the official cash rate (OCR) will be held at 1.75 per cent until mid-2019. This outlook reflects the fact that inflation remains relatively benign due to continued overcapacity in the global economy and subdued wage and price-setting behaviour domestically, according to Auckland Property Market Research from Crockers Property for April 2018. Nevertheless, both skilled and unskilled workers are becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to find. Given the tightening labour market, it is possible that the OCR will need to be lifted earlier in 2019 to counteract mounting wage and cost pressures. During the next tightening cycle in monetary conditions, Infometrics expects the OCR to peak at about 3.5 per cent. An OCR at this level would translate into floating mortgage rates of about 7.6 per cent. This relatively modest peak is indicative of a view that interest rates are set to remain lower than the rates that prevailed during the 1990s and 2000s. Although longer-term interest rates ended 2017 slightly lower than they started the year, upward pressure on these rates still looks to be in the pipeline. Stability in global economic growth will gradually see more central banks around the world move into a phase of tightening monetary conditions. Infometrics forecasts that 10-year bond rates will rise about 50 basis points during 2018 and a further 50 points over the following two years. These movements will flow through into higher fixed mortgage rates, with all rates advertised by the retail banks back above 6 per cent by the end of 2020.

On the cusp of a house price correction Having peaked at 14 per cent pa in mid-2016, house price inflation had slowed to 3.9 per cent pa by October last year according to Quotable Value’s index. However, data during the middle to latter part of 2017 showed small signs of a recovery in prices, particularly in Auckland. We note that 26 per cent of respondents to the latest CPII survey expect house prices in Auckland to fall over the next 12 months. This figure is greater than the 23 per cent of respondents a year ago and the 11 per cent recorded in early 2016 when looking forward over a twoyear horizon. Significantly, just 8 per cent of people in the latest survey expect price rises of 5.0 per cent or more over the next year, well down from the 31 per cent in this camp in

2017 and 61 per cent of respondents in 2016. Infometrics is forecasting a drop of 15 per cent in house prices over the three years to December 2020. This fall appears dramatic compared to the 9.8 per cent average decline in prices over a 15-month period in 2008/09 at the height of the GFC. However, property is now significantly more overvalued than it was prior to the GFC. Infometrics’ forecast decline is also more gradual than during the GFC, with less financial stress on property owners and fewer forced sales limiting the extent of house price falls. Two factors present upside risks to these forecasts and could limit house price declines. Firstly, a solid economic performance of 2-3 per cent pa GDP growth could see prices hold steady, but fewer properties being transacted, with owners under little pressure to sell and so refusing to drop their asking prices. Secondly, Auckland’s undersupply of housing could maintain a high level of competition among buyers and force property prices higher. Considering this situation, Infometrics notes that Auckland’s housing undersupply places the region less at risk of house price falls than many other parts of the country as population growth slows.

Consumer NZ is calling for changes to tenancy law to improve protection for renters. Ms Wilson said regulation of property managers needed to be included in law reforms signalled by the government. “We’ve previously reported on problems in this industry, which has attracted complaints from both renters and landlords. Our survey provides further evidence voluntary self-regulation of property managers isn’t working,” Ms Wilson said. Consumer NZ also wants changes to tenancy law to improve security of tenure and is calling for a blacklist of unfair terms and fees. “Close to one in 10 renters report being charged extra fees With overor50 years by their landlord property combined in the manager. Fencibles United AFC’s men’s first team came away with a well-deserved 3-1 win over Tauranga City AFC at Riverhills Park on Sunday in a well-contested Northern Region Football League Division 1 derby. Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there to capture the action.

PURC off to good start Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers kicked off the season with a convincing win over East Tamaki on Saturday. Great kick off for Ranga Page 27

Games leave us with such golden memories

Jethro Friend gets up a good head of steam; below, Seiloni Liavaa makes a strong run.

N Times photos Wayne Martin

Hornets tame Leopards The Howick Hornets fought back from a 14-8 deficit at half-time to beat Otahuhu and clock their second victory of the new season with a 22-14 win. Coach Shaun Clark credited the strong impact of his bench, who turned the game early in the second half. Veteran prop Tony Tuia was another standout, playing 70 minutes in the middle of the park. While they missed out on the two points, the Leopards will take plenty of confidence from footing it with last-year’s semi-finalists.

ew Zealand’s men’s and women’s sevens wins against Olympic champions Fiji and Australia respectively provided a happy Commonwealth Games final day for the Kiwis on Australia’s Gold Coast. While the fifth placed medal count of 46 (15 gold, 16 silver, 15 bronze) failed to compare with the hosts 198 (80,59,59), it remained highly satisfactory for a nation of our size. Who will forget Kelly Brazier’s extra time 80m sprint for sevens gold or the sheer joy of the English netballers on pipping Australia at the post for the first netball Commonwealth gold in their history? That painted a sad contrast to the distraught Silver Ferns who failed to medal for the first time and whose coach Janine Southby’s win record of 51 per cent suggests her head is on the chopping block. There’s no disgrace in losing to Australia or muchimproved England and Jamaica, but being humiliated by Malawi showed just how badly the Ferns’ standards

60

have plummeted. The decision not to play centre Laura Langman because she played in the Australian league came back to haunt a team that lacked confidence and abandoned its zone defence. It was a shame that one of the great comeback wins of the Games was tainted by mountain biker Sam Gaze’s poor sportsmanship in accusing team-mate Anton Cooper of the same for not stopping for him while his bike was being repaired. That Gaze came back to win with a withering, sustained sprint spoke volumes for his ability, if not his mental judgment. In fairness, he did make a belated apology. But it is a shame his earlier action will leave a lasting memory and erase the glitter from his gold. With the cyclists giving the New Zealand contingent an excellent start and Sam Webster picking up two golds, the boxers also did their bit with five medals. Shot putter Tom Walsh

comfortably won his event while relatively new mum Val Adams and pole vault poster girl Liza McCartney had to settle for silvers. Particularly pleasing was the performance of the Black Sticks women’s hockey team in beating both England and Australia in dramatic fashion to finally win gold. And once again Para Olympian swimmer Sophie Pascoe starred in the pool. Critics who claim the Commonwealth Games lack the status of the Olympics and world championships do have a point. But it remains a great sporting festival for aspiring champions and long may it continue. Full marks for the Brisbane Broncos for registering a deserved 27-18 NRL triumph to break the Warriors’ 5-0 winning streak.

They ran harder, were more cohesive and strung their passes together better. However there is much to like about the Warriors play this year to give fans encouragement although the Dragons pose a tough proposition next up. Meanwhile it was heartening to see fullback Ben Smith return to his best with two dazzling tries in the Highlanders 43-17 Super Rugby win against David Pocock’s Brumbies. Add to that the brilliance of Beauden Barrett and Ben Lam in the Hurricanes 25-13 win against the Chiefs, with Barrett winning his duel against mercurial Damian McKenzie and Lam scoring a stunning try when beating four defenders. However with so many of his best props still injured, All Black coach Steve Hansen will be praying for a quick recovery before the French arrive here in June. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
