t 89, one of New Zealand’s truly great sporting icons, Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick, passed away on Saturday, mourned by a nation who loved her as much for her gracious humility as her athletic prowess. Dunedin-born and raised before moving to Auckland, Yvette (nee Williams) was New Zealand’s first woman Olympic champion, winning the long jump in Helsinki in 1952 after no jumping on her first two attempts and only qualifying for the final three on her nerve-racking third. That 6.24m gold medal jump was an Olympic record and only 1cm short of the world record held by Dutch legend Fanny Blankers-Koen, a mark she bettered in Gisborne in 1954 with a 6.28m leap. Had there been a pentahlon in those days, Yvette would most certainly have emulated her long jump feats for she was the most versatile woman athlete on the globe. She had also won the long jump at the 1950 Commonwealth Empire Games and four years later won the shot put, discus and long jump in Vancouver, all with Games records. In addition, she won 21 NZ titles in five different events, had broken national records 27 times and was named NZ Sportsperson of the Decade (1950-59). It was a great decade for New Zealand with Sir Edmund Hillary conquering Mount Everest in 1953 and the All Blacks beating the 1956 Springboks on home soil. Having married popular American “Buddy’ Corlett in 1954 and retiring two years later, she also represented New Zealand in basketball, as did Buddy, her 1966 Commonwealth Games decathlon champion brother, Roy, and her son Neville. Buddy also represented New Zealand at softball. Another son, Peter, was a NZ junior decathlon champion and record-holder who went on to represent Pakuranga and Auckland as a hard, uncompromising midfield back. ➤ Turn to Page 2

Meanwhile, local sportsman and businessman Ron Johnson paid tribute to Yvette. Ron, a local decathlete who won the NZ Masters Athlete of the Year Award 2018 and who has been competing in many similar events over the years, is in a similar age bracket “to the great Yvette Williams”. Ron says he has always had a great admiration for Yvette as she has led the way as a terrific multi-disciplined athlete. “She has been an ambassador to NZ athletics and an inspiration to both himself and other multi-athletes in the Masters age groups,” said Ron. “She can never be replaced and will stand alone with both all of her NZ records and world class achievements that have put her on a pedestal in the history of NZ athletics. “It will be a long time until another athlete that is so gifted and talented could perform at the highest level in so many different events.” A death notice in the Herald says Yvette passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family at 7pm, on Satur-

‘Stations of the Cross’ – Word on the Street –April 19-21
Word on the Street More local artists than ever are exhibiting their Easter Art at the 2019 Word on the Street exhibition. Creative people from around the Howick and greater Auckland area are showcasing their talents as part of an Easter Art exhibition over the Easter weekend. Over a third of the artists in 2019 are newcomers to the Easter exhibition which is in its 13th year. One of the newcomers in 2019 is inspiring Auckland artist Anita Mary, fresh from her Overcome exhibition at the Papakura Art Centre in December 2018 (www. anitamary.com). Anita Mary has been painting full-time since 2012. Struggling with chronic pain and mental health challenges, she has discovered that art is not only therapeutic but is also a tangible medium through which to share the possibility of hope. Since 2012 she has been involved in many exhibitions alongside her own solo exhibitions, Metamorphosis, Matters Of The Heart, Awoken and most recently, Overcome. Anita Mary will be exhibiting her work at the exhibition and sharing some of her journey through art at The Artists Speak event on Saturday April 20, 7pm. Artists will share about their art within the exhibition gallery as part of an evening of art, music, canapes and light refreshments. Howick artist, photographer and art tutor Keryn Bloxham is returning to the exhibition in 2019 (www.kerynbloxham.com). Keryn is well-known for her work painting landscapes and animals. Much of her work evokes a distinctly spiritual point of view. This year’s piece combines these elements in a uniquely New Zealand seascape

using found items as she takes her palette to a wooden pallet! “The prevailing remark I hear from people who have bought my art or photography is that when they look at them, they feel peace,” says Mrs Bloxham. Preparations have been underway for the past nine months as artists have worked together on developing the theme for the exhibition and the gallery design. The Exhibition is displayed within a thematically-driven “theatrical” style set designed by the Stations project team and intended to add colour and ambience to attendees’ journey through the Easter art. “This year’s exhibition Word in the Street will offer a range of artistic pieces from the more traditional art forms to the off-thewall and creative. “We’re expecting painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media artists and poets – all reflecting on the universal themes of the Easter story – betrayal, shame, guilt, injustice and perhaps most importantly, hope. Our unique gallery design this year will invite people into a gritty urban environment that reveals Jesus’ journey to the Cross at a street level,” explains exhibition curator Brett Jones. ■■ Further information, exhibition curator Brett Jones 027 284 2893 or bj@cession.org.nz ■■ Entry by gold coin donation, The Depot, Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park. ■■ www.cession.org.nz Stations of the Cross “Word on the Street”: ■■ Friday April 19, 6pm-9pm ■■ Saturday April 20, 10am-5pm ■■ Sunday April 21, 9am-2pm Saturday April 20 – The Artists Speak: Stories Behind the Art from 7pm
olice have arrested six people after executing search warrants targeting members and associates of the Comanchero motorcycle gang. More than 80 police raided 10 properties across the Auckland region – including Mellons Bay last Thursday. The warrants are part of the second phase of an investigation dubbed Operation Nova, run by the National Organised Crime Group. The first phase, on February 12, saw the arrest of five people in New Zealand and one person in Fiji, as well as the seizure of about 11kg of methamphetamine and 39kg of cocaine. They had a combined street value of more than $25 million. As part of last Thursday’s efforts, almost $4m in assets have been nabbed including two residential properties and several high-end vehicles including several Range Rovers, a Rolls Royce and Harley Davidson motorcycles. About $60,000 of cash and firearms have been seized, including a loaded pistol at one address, and a pistol grip shotgun and rounds of ammunition at another. National Organised Crime Group’s Detective Superintendent Greg Williams says the operation has targeted some senior members of the Comancheros. He says the operation has dealt a heavy blow to the Comanche-

“THE STORY OF THE BIBLE”
To be held at The Pakuranga Christadelphian Hall, 51 Dale Crescent, Pakuranga. The seminar will be run over 8 weeks on consecutive Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm. Many Bible readers have difficulty fitting everything together. Who came first, Moses or Abraham? What was the “captivity” of Israel all about? When did Jesus say he would return to earth? This course is about where major people and events fit into the overall Bible story. The Bible message is heard much more loudly and clearly if we understand the overall story of the Bible. The goal is to help you understand the Bible as a message from God. A workbook will be provided. Sports awards a success A
manda Dyason, one of the key organisers out of Pakuranga United Rugby Club, has branded the Howick Local Sports Awards a great success. “It was nice that so many finalists came on the night and that they were all recognised,” she said. I think if we can keep the momentum going it will get better each year. It was nice to see lots of smaller sports, individuals and clubs recognised in the nomination process. “The calibre of nominations in this area was amazing and it is a great thing for the Howick Local Board to run each year so that the sporting community can come together to acknowledge and celebrate individuals, clubs and schools.” The start of the 20-plus year service awards was received well and appreciated by those receiving them.

Easter sunrise service returns
T
he combined churches Easter Sunrise Service is back for another year. The Easter Sunrise Service has been held every year since 1996 starting off with a handful of churches. This year the service will have most of the churches in the Howick ward taking part, gathering on Stockade Hill where many important early church and civic events were held. The public service will begin at 6.30am on Easter Sunday April 21 and welcomes anyone who wishes to attend.
With such panoramic views of the gulf and the community, there’s no better place to welcome Easter Day, celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and to pray for our East Auckland community. Over the years big crowds have gathered for this early morning event with leadership of the 40 minute service shared around local church leaders. This year, St Columba Presbyterian’s new minister, Rev Chris Barnard, will share prayers, with Scripture by Becca Green, pastor from Elim Christian Centre and Grace Sylvester from All Saints
Anglican. Other participation will be by Pastor Peter Morton (River Christian Church), Pastor Phil Sproull (Howick Community Church), and Rev Dr Richard Waugh (East City Wesleyan) who has coordinated the event since 1996. ■ Combined churches Easter Sunrise Service ■ Easter Sunday April 21 ■ 6.30am on Stockade Hill Pastor Peter Morton (left) and Rev Dr Richard Waugh (right) from East City Wesleyan Church who has coordinated the event since 1996. Shelley Park colour run set to be annual event More than 1000 eager runners flocked to Shelley Park School to take part in its second colour run. Up from 600 participants last year, the recent colour run is the school’s biggest fundraiser. Students, parents and teachers alike ran/ walked/crawled around a 1km obstacle course within the school zones while being bombed with powder from seven colour zones. The course culminated in a giant foam slide that was a huge hit with young and old alike. The event ended with a mass colour throw when over 1000 people threw handfuls of coloured powder into the air. The youngest participants were a pair of one year olds and there were several grandparents
who completed the course. Parents and teachers said the day perfectly showed the spirit and sense of fun of the school. There were raffles, ‘Bomb the teacher’ and a costume competition where the community were encouraged to wear their wackiest outfits. Participants travelled from as far south as Papakura and as far north as Albany to attend the event, which was open to the entire community. Hayley Gahan, an event organiser, says the colour run looks set to be a permanent fixture on the Shelly Park School calendar. Plans are already underway to make next year’s event even bigger and more spectacular.
Pak win third game in a row Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premiers have claimed their third straight win in the Auckland Rugby competition with a solid 72-8 win over East Tamaki. The Premier Development squad also banked a solid win winning 38-18 against East Tamaki.

those double bogeys had cost him victory but had increased his popularity. Meanwhile the All Blacks have lost one of their most exciting Rugby World Cup prospects with the ruptured knee ligaments which will sideline Damian McKenzie for the rest of the year. It’s a great shame for a brave, adventuresome, versatile player who goes where angels fear to tread. Fortunately Ben Smith also remains a great fullback and Jordie Barrett has the ability to become one. However, finding a third firstfive behind brilliant Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga won’t be so easy.
T
error has long been a weapon wielded by those who seek to impose their world view on others. And when it happens to you, your family, or your people, it’s brutal and shocking. The first Easter was no exception. It is one of the stranger appropriations across the religious world; that a belief system based on an ethic of love would adopt an instrument of execution as its central symbol. Yet, that is exactly what sits at the heart of Christian faith, the Cross, a Roman method of torture and execution that inspired fear in the detractors of its vast empire. How does a symbol of terror become a symbol of hope? The use of crosses as a means of execution dates well before Jesus’ death over 2000 years ago in the Roman province of Judea. The most infamous of them all took place many years earlier in the wake of the revolt led by Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who was the most well-known leader in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Six thousand survivors of the revolt captured by the legions were crucified, lining the Appian Way from Rome to Capua, an act of terror which was startling in

A large representation from the police, including the commissioner of Police Mike Bush, Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers and Area Commander Counties Manukau East Wendy Spiller, accompanied the venerable Abbess Manshin at the event that advocates harmony, diversity and a fulfilled life. Also spotted was war veteran John Sato with Bo Burns, Minister for Ethnic

est expression of our humanity blooms in the face of terror. It’s easy to imagine Jesus finding these words in the bucolic environment of his open air teachings. It’s harder to imagine his own experience of terror at the hands of an empire balancing the possibility of local rebellion with keeping the religious elites of the time on a short leash. But even, in this moment, Jesus lived out his love as he spoke words which echo for all of us facing our own moments of terror as victims or even perpetrators. ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ (Luke 23:34) At that moment, the Cross became a mirror for both the darkness of humanity and the forgiveness of God. The transformation of the cross continued in the aftermath of the crucifixion with the miracle of the empty tomb and the resurrected Jesus. Today it is a symbol of hope that dares to say there is life beyond death, love beyond hate and hope beyond terror. ■ Brett Jones, Executive member, East Auckland Ministers Association. The East Auckland Ministers’ Association is a network of Ministers working across the East Auckland area (encompassing Botany, Flat Bush, Howick & Pakuranga) and encompassing over 65 churches.

its magnitude. It’s precisely this reaction to acts and moments of terror which make them such an effective deterrent to those who would seek to live another way. But there is a choice, a choice which we find in the very life and death and resurrection of Jesus, a choice we find in his teachings which will challenge us to face the anger and darkness in our own lives. ‘You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:43-44) This is a subversive message when everything in us screams for justice, maybe even revenge; when anger overflows into dismissal and hatred of others. One of Jesus’ followers, a former terror expert, Paul, extended Jesus’ teaching in a profound way: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). The possibility of good overcoming evil is often counter intuitive for us as we grapple with moments of horror perpetrated by what seems most naturally described as “evil”. And yet this is the way of the Cross. This is the way in which the full-

Tigermania returned to golf with the amazing Tiger Woods winning his first major since the 2008 US Open and his first Masters in 14 years. It was an emotional moment as he showed his joy and hugged his family before the thunderous cheers of a crowd who have forgiven him his sins when his scoring of birdies went beyond the greens and ruined his marriage. Now, after four back operations, he’s scored his 15th major triumph, just three short of Jack Nicklaus’ record. And he could not have done it at a better setting than the beautiful, testing Augusta course. His final round 70 for a 13-under one stroke victory over Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele was not his best. But he held his nerve when it mattered while Italian leader Francesco Molinari fell two behind upon scoring two double bogeys. A sporting Molinari joked

The Natural Health Co. has moved to Howick After 19 years of building goodwill and serving the community at Highland Park, The Natural Health Co has moved to Howick at The Terraces, Unit 9, 10 Wellington Street. When Tracy and Ronen Ben-Harosh first started the business in January 2001, the mission back then was to have a community health store with qualified staff on the floor so people can trust the advice provided by a friendly staff. That’s how they built a community of loyal clientele that has faithfully followed them to the new location. Tracy is truly appreciative of the full-hearted support from the community that they have enjoyed serving for a long time. “We’ve just opened two weeks ago and it’s lovely to see new faces in the store. It’s nice to move to an area where people have a big sense of community. We feel very welcomed after 19 years of feeling at home at Highland Park. We already feel at home in Howick,” she smiles saying. New Zealand’s number one supplement independent
retail health store chain with great prices and a huge range of supplements, skincare and household items also has an Organic Food store in close proximity to their new locale at Rice’s Mall. “We have two stores with a lot more space which allows us to have more produce and branch out into giftware as well,” informs Tracy. “Like we did in the store at Highland Park, we have a clinic beauty therapist, a clinic room, and an herbal dispensary. There will be a naturopath, medical herbalist and homeopathy practitioner for extra support. The hours are the same. And we also have the same loyalty card system and have a lot more parking here.” Practitioner appointments will be available after hours and customers can book evening appointments. To celebrate the launch of The Natural Health Co, there will be an open day on May 4 with lots of tasting and giveaways. The celebration will be throughout the day from 9am-5pm. All are welcome.

Anzac Day is a time to reflect
25 Wellington St, HoWick. PH 534 9702.
N
ext Thursday April 25, New Zealanders will come together as we do every year for Anzac Day, to remember and thank those who have given their lives in service to our country. Anzac Day is a special day for all Kiwis, both in New Zealand and living abroad. It serves as a reminder of our nation’s spirit during the darkest of days and gives all of us a chance to reflect on the sacrifices which were made in order to secure the freedoms that we enjoy today. This year, Anzac Day will carry with it an additional weight upon our shoulders. In light of the terrorist attack committed on March 15 in Christchurch, we as New Zealanders will use it as an opportunity to demonstrate just how strong and united we remain. As a country we are still grappling with the aftermath of this
terrible tragedy and what it will mean for us as a country. In light of the events of last month we must, more than ever, remember and have at the forefront of our minds the freedom that our Anzac’s fought and died for. Our country is founded on the principles of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of association. These freedoms are precious and must continue to be fought for to ensure that we not only honour the Anzac spirit, but that we continue to build a free and democratic society. In a free society like our own the responsibility to protect these freedoms falls on every one of us. Hate speech which incites violence is a crime and never has a place in our society, however we cannot protect freedoms by unjustifiably restricting them. All freedoms come with responsibility and no freedom
www.times.co.nz
Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga exists without its limitations but in our public discourse about hate speech I am concerned that many are seeking to regulate what views can be heard and which can’t. This amounts to a form of state sanctioned censorship which we must be very careful to avoid. This Anzac Day will be an opportunity to reflect on these freedoms and the challenges we now face as a country and how we navigate these challenges. I strongly encourage everyone to attend both the Dawn Service and Civic Service on Howick’s Stockade Hill this Anzac Day as we reflect and look forward as a country.
What does Anzac mean to you? The Howick Village Business Association is inviting the community to share their messages, to be placed on a large Anzac poppy outside the Howick Information Service in the Market Square. This art piece will allow people to commemorate those

Good on you Israel
My admiration goes to Israel Folau for his courage in speaking out against what is the abnormal way of life since creation. The normal way of life since time immemorial was marriage between a man and a woman and because of mankind’s need to do as they want, the different way of life was adopted and normalised by society. It isn’t just gay, but all that we do wrong one way or another is now normalised in society and everybody is expected to fall in line. Israel Folau is very brave in standing up and giving his comments on what he believes in, in spite of being baited and he has my support. I am stunned at the way he is treated by Rugby Australia and by society at large as he as only standing up for what he believes in and no way is he homophobic. Who was it that baited him and what happened to freedom of speech? God bless Israel Folau.

Anzac Day Parade
A group of Howick people will march at the forthcoming Anzac Day memorial. The people are upset over the cancelling of the parade aspect and consider it very much an over-reaction and the politicians not having the wherewithal to insist parades in many areas should occur. The group invites other residents to also participate. Safety arrangements are being considered. We will approach the RSA to see if they are interested. The public should just rock up on the day. This was started by a group of mates but has some interest via Facebook so hard to know how big or small it could be. As for a contact, try Facebook under Howick Locals Memorial Anzac Walk.

Paying it forward
I just wanted to somehow say thank you to a Howick local who gifted $30 to Poppies bookshop in Howick, which was then passed onto myself and my two children as we were shopping for friend’s birthday gifts. We were very much overwhelmed and humbled and my six and three year old and I had such a rich conversation on the way home about paying it forward and helping others where we can. We are looking forward to handing over the book at the birthday party tomorrow! Thank you, whoever you are!

Burglars out in Sunnyhills
I live in the Sunnyhills area. We came home on Friday (April 12) to find our house had been broken into and trashed. These criminals tipped out every drawer, every bag and generally left a big mess. Thankfully no one was hurt. I understand there have been other break-ins in the area. I would like if possible to get the message out to the residents of Sunnyhills , Farm Cove, Half Moon Bay to be aware of this activity. Our break-in happened during the day.

Scoot or not to scoot
One of the most important things against the use of lime scooters seems to have been overlooked – lack of natural exercise! I would suggest that most of the riders who now ride scooters probably are missing out on much-needed exercise which would provide them with essential health care. Kiwis need more exercise, not less. Scooters are not doing them a favour.

Andre Heimgartner has broken through for a podium finish at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint at the weekend. With a third-place finish in Saturday’s race, Heimgartner secured his second Supercars podium result and his first as a solo driver (following the third place he achieved at the 2017 Gold Coast 600 as Tim Slade’s co-driver). The #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima driver from Dannemora had started on the second row of the grid for the 120km/27 lap race after qualifying fourth and while he was jumped by his Kelly Racing team boss Rick Kelly at the start, with great car speed he was able to get that spot back through the pit stops amidst a strong race that saw him advance to the podium. “To be on the podium on Saturday was just fantastic,”

Then in the 73rd minute Iwa Shaker of Bucklands Beach was taken down in the box, a penalty was awarded. Ben Culpan stepped up again and slotted his second penalty of the afternoon. Bucklands Beach took the lead 4-3 and held on to record a memorable win. As Bucklands Beach’s manager Paul Mackenzie said, ‘This is a significant result in football for east Auckland. No longer can Bucklands Beach be thought of as the small neighbour.” They do it all again in the 12th round, June 15 at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

Fencibles came back in the 29th minute with a goal to their new import Cobi Allen. At half time, the game was all tied up at 1-all. Whatever Mozr said to the boys at half time worked as one minute into the second half and Josh Smith scored after a blistering run down the left. Bucklands Beach took the lead but Fencibles had fight to score the next two goals in three minutes, to Scott Booker and then Luke Bulay who had a commanding presence in the middle of the pitch. Heimgartner said. “It is a brilliant reward for my sponsors and the entire team, and I am so happy with how it all came together. I was even catching the front-running Mustangs at one point there, but the safety car put paid to that. Even so, after struggling for the past few rounds to find balance in the cars, to finally be turning that around and have a fast car underneath me is really great.“ “The points and the result means a lot for the team and the sponsors, all together it was just an amazing feeling.” Come Sunday’s race, the 23-year-old would unfortunately struggle with a lack of good tyres and car speed, qualifying for and then finishing the 200km/45 lap battle in 13th place while struggling with car speed.

Accord promotes healthy industry P
ublic and private collaboration on the Construction Sector Accord and bi-partisan support for the establishment of the Infrastructure Commission will deliver major benefits for infrastructure and construction outcomes if cooperation can be sustained, says Infrastructure New Zealand CEO Stephen Selwood. “The Construction Sector Accord announced today (Sunday, April 14) aims to transform the way the government and the construction industry work together and that transformation can’t come soon enough. “Uncertainty, skills shortages, injuries and contracting issues are making the construction sector a less attractive, productive and effective part of the economy. That’s bad for everyone, not least of all the Government because of the direct role construction plays in delivering public services. “ The Accord signals recognition that clients have a major impact on the way the industry behaves. What everyone wants, he says, is a healthy construction industry which competes across itself to deliver value, rather than competing with its clients. “That the Accord has been signed in the same week that legislation to establish the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga (NZIC), attracted
support from all political parties is especially pleasing,” says Selwood. The NZIC will provide independent advice to the Government on infrastructure strategy and provide procurement support. It will develop a long-awaited pipeline of public works which will give the industry greater clarity over future infrastructure programmes, priorities and investments. “This forward work programme is essential to providing the market with the confidence to invest in the skills, systems and equipment which are desperately required to improve New Zealand’s construction productivity,” he says. “But it must have bi-partisan support to succeed. New Zealand’s thee-year election cycle is too short for any one Government to reshape infrastructure policy. “There needs to be broader understanding and agreement over the long term opportunities and challenges so that, even if projects change in the short term, we as a country do not lose sight of the bigger picture. “We strongly commend the NZIC process to date which has enabled all political leaders to work together. The priority now is to sustain an open, transparent and collaborative process to finalise legislation and establish a respected, capable and independent infrastructure body.”

ousing market activity continued to hit a flat note in March according to REINZ. The 6,938 sales recorded across NZ were almost 13 per cent down on March last year. Seasonally adjusted, every single region experienced a fall in sales activity in March. House price appreciation eased further, coming in at 2.3 per cent year-on-year (yoy), the lowest rate seen since September 2011. The housing market is moderating and is likely to continue to for some time to come . Policies that weigh on investorrelated activity, such as the likelihood of a capital gains tax, are potentially influencing market activity. But there are supporting factors likely to mitigate the risks of a sharp correction in the market. Supply of affordable housing remains a major issue in a number of regions. The labour market is tight and generating employment, although downside risks are clearly a concern here. In addition, mortgage rates are set to fall further with the Reserve Bank of NZ likely to cut the official cash rate (OCR) sooner rather than later – sooner being May in our view. hot, and now it is setting the direction for the rest of the country on the way down. House prices in the City of Sales were almost 3 per cent down on March 2018, and the median number of days to sell at 42 was the highest for a March month since 2001. But the Auckland market is far from the type of freefall being experienced across the ditch in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. Unlike the major cities of Australia, Auckland continues to suffer from a shortage in housing. In the regions there were some large falls in sales in March. Wellington experienced a particularly soft March with 809 sales,

which was down 10 per cent month-on-month (mom) seasonally adjusted. REINZ does point out that the Capital also has the lowest level of inventory in any region (with only eight weeks), and this is likely to be a key reason for weaker sales activity. House price appreciation eased a touch across several regions. For instance, in Otago annual house price appreciation fell to 9 per cent yoy from 12 per cent yoy in Feb. Taranaki and Southland stood out with a pick-up in house price increases. Annual house price appreciation in these regions were 7.2 per cent yoy and 16.8 per cent yoy respectively. ■■ Jeremy Couchman is Senior Economist at Kiwibank

Overall club champions again! By Jim Allnatt
H
owick Pakuranga cricket celebrated the end of a huge season at the Auckland Cricket prizegiving winning four major trophies. The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premiers won both the Hedley Howarth Cup for the Two Day Championship and the Jeff Crowe Cup for the Limited Overs competition as well as finishing third equal in the T20 Tournament. Coach Alan Hunt was also recognised as Club Coach of the Year, welldeserved recognition of both his coaching and man management skills. The high point of the night was the announcement that Howick Pakuranga won the Overall Club Championship as the best performed club right through the grades ranging from the children right up to premier men and women. This is the second
year the club has won this trophy in succession and this result can only be down to the many hours of hard work by volunteer coaches, managers and committee members backed up by an excellent coaching programme. Some players had outstanding seasons and were recognised at the senior club prizegiving: Daniel Young took the Premier Batting trophy with an impressive 899 runs for the season and a top score of 135. Donovan Grobbelaar with 379 runs and 32 wickets won the All Rounders Award and Danru Ferns with 39 wickets had an outstanding season. Natasha Van Tilburg scored the most one day runs with an aggregate of 619 runs for the season and was also recognised as Premier Women’s Player of the Year. Alyssa Bowden took 26 wickets to win the award for premier women’s bowler. There were also four winners in the Auckland Cricket Club section:

Natasha Van Tilburg became the first Howick Pakuranga Premier Woman to win the historical Nessie Hammond Cup for batting in Premier Women’s grade. The Premier Women also won the Stringfellow Cup as the most improved premier team in their grade. Andrew Morrison also had a stellar season winning the prized S.R. Speed Trophy for most dismissals in premier cricket – 39 plus 686 runs for the season. Morrison also won the Howick Pakuranga Club Cricketer of the Year with those stats. The other recognition by Auckland Cricket was the Dick Shortt Memorial Trophy for the most positive cricketer of the year awarded to Brian Barnard who scored his runs at a tremendous rate and we lost count of the number of sixes he hit during the year. Finally no club can run without the volunteers who give so much time and Howick Pakuranga has many. The Peter Guest Memorial
