Do you support the legalisation of cannabis? By THERESE HENKIN
A
s far as public meetings go, Simeon Brown’s drug reform meeting on Monday night with National Party Spokesperson for Drug Reform Paula Bennett was an interesting one. One member of the public challenged Bennett’s explanation of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) levels in marijuana, while a man in his late 20s professed cannabis is life-changing for reasons he didn’t get around to explaining.
Improve your English and your confidence.
The biggest topic of conversation was next year’s non-binding (not automatically written into law) referendum where Kiwis will vote on whether personal, recreational cannabis use should be legalised. The question will be asked according to a draft legislation which is due to be released in the coming months. It would include a proposed minimum age of 20 years old to use and purchase cannabis, regulations and commercial supply controls, and limited growing
options. Bennett again said she would be voting no in the referendum. She said New Zealand has a serious drug problem and as a country we don't have in place the health services and education programmes set up to manage the potential negative effects of such a vote. “I think that instead of us having a real discussion on what we do with [the drug problem in New Zealand], the Greens have come up with this solution of legalis-

ing before we as a country work through the options of how we deal with some of the problems,” Bennett said in her address. She said a decision on legalisation is premature without knowing the harm and cost to society of legal personal cannabis use. One member of the crowd urged people to be pragmatic and do their research before voting. She said her research found marijuana to be less harmful and less addictive to her children than any other drugs out there.

The mother of boys made a point of saying marijuana isn’t the gateway drug; the gateway is the drug dealer. “At the moment we have drug dealers who are dealing to our kids, who just want to move them on to the more profitable drugs. "I’d rather it be [regulated by] the government.” But her point of view was lost on a few who argued that many drug addictions started with marijuana use. ➤ Turn to Page 3

These volunteers include response team members who receive extensive training to go with the boxeswhere needed and liaise with the governments and local Rotary clubs to assist with the distribution.Because these charities are run by volunteers, virtually all of the donations received go to the cost of the boxes including from inception to delivery to the recipient and any donation of $5-plus can be offset against income tax. Donations are urgently requested to meet the need. Full details of these charities and how to donate can be found on their websites or Facebook.A shelterbox costs $1500, their repair kit costs $600. Wrong-way driver in police custody T
he driver responsible for injuring himself and three others in a horrific head on collision near Highbrook on Thursday is in police custody. The 40-year-old man will be facing charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and endangering transport after he drove a stolen car the wrong way down the Southern Motorway, crashing into an innocent motorist. The crash, which shut down all southbound lanes for two hours,
was captured on camera by the Police eagle helicopter. The eagle helicopter was deployed shortly after 9am on Thursday when complaints about the driver were first received by police. After driving erratically through parts of the Flat Bush area, on multiple occasions putting members of the public at risk, the driver was seen entering the southbound lanes using the Highbrook motorway off-ramp.
This footage was later leaked to the public prompting an internal police investigation. The alleged offending driver is also facing a number of serious charges including assault, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’ and threatening to kill in connection to a previous unrelated incident last Wednesday. The Times understands the driver appeared in the Manukau District Court on Saturday morning.
On Monday night Paula Bennett addressed the people of east Auckland on drug reform in New Zealand at a public meeting at St Columba Church in Botany.
Cannabis vote important ➤➤Continued from page 1 Bennett reiterated a point made by many people who work in the drug addiction sector and said while ‘weed’ might not formally be a gateway drug, all of the recovering drug addicts she had spoken to are opposed to the legalisation of recreational marijuana. “It’s where their problems started and they are scared for themselves and for their children.”
Others simply expressed the need for greater investment into treatment for drug addiction and trauma that leads to drug use in the first place. As well as general members of the public, there were speakers from Odyssey House and Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation. In a nutshell, it certainly wasn’t short of healthy debate and divided opinion.

here’s a very proud bunch of kids in a Ugandan village sporting some very smart football kit thanks to a Botany family and Bucklands Beach Association Football Club (BBAFC). BBAFC was approached by Northpark’s Tina Bargh whose family was to embark on their first visit to Uganda with a mission to meet up with the aid organisation. Andy Pullar, BBAFC’s president, said: “Tina was enquiring with BBAFC as to if we could help with some playing kit and equipment for the kids. “We reached out to our club members for donations of football boots. There was maybe enough to kit out three or four teams.” The club had a large number of playing shirts it no longer required. “These typically were ones that were either an old brand or style or no longer required. The blue ones in the photo were our old training and away kit that we no longer used,” said Pullar. “The gear was all in excellent condition. One criteria from Tina was that they could only take playing kit if there was enough to outfit a whole team. We managed to supply enough to outfit probably three or four teams - shirts, shorts, and socks.” The club is delighted it has been able to help. “It’s really cool for our club to be able to help out these kids. We all share a love of football and to see these kids kicking a football around the pitch is fantastic.” “A special thanks to our members who donated all the football boots for the kids to wear on the pitch.” The aid organisation heading

the programme is called Rising Star Ministries, a sports and education ministry that aims to end poverty in Uganda by helping students grow spiritually, academically and physically, giving them hope for the future and a chance to help build thriving communities When the kids are on breaks from school, Rising Star runs soccer programmes three days a week. The programme uses soccer as an incentive for kids to work hard. Before coming to the soccer field, kids first spend the morning hours in the reading centre where they are taught how to read and write. Bargh said there was a group who went and funded the trip themselves. “We went as we are friends with a couple from our church, (NewHope Community Church) who are New Zealanders living and working there with aid organisations which provides trauma relief to refugees,” she said.
‘When we decided to go to Uganda we found out that one of the needs we may be able to help with was supplying gear to the Rising Star organisation. We asked a few football clubs if they had gear to donate via facebook and Bucklands Beach replied very generously.” While they were there they also visited a Compassion project in Nsyambya and saw first-hand “the incredible and lasting benefits” of child sponsorship. “We visited a maternity clinic run by one ex-pat midwife on the edge of a slum as well as visiting a refugee camp in Adjumani. One of the outcomes of our trip has been that we are now considering ways to raise funds to pay a monthly salary of $200 so that the midwife we met can employ another well-trained midwife and possibly a social worker as well. “We are also hoping to be able to send funds to the Tutapona Adjumani field office to enable them to buy a computer.”

They never cease to surprise and entertain. It is easy to see that The Epiphanies – the fabulous trio of Rebecca Wright, Sharon Emirali and Gail Tipene – had fun putting the Divas Through the Decades show together. The 60s girl group filled the hall with beautiful harmony, melody, rhythm and great timing at Operatunity’s Daytime Concert series held recently at St Columba Church. Accompanied by the wellexperienced musicians in the band comprising Grant Winterburn, Mike Booth and Bruce French, the concert celebrated iconic singers like Connie Francis, Doris Day, Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin – to name a few. Male singers and entertainers Bonaventure Allan Moetaua and Tainui Kuru also deserve a special mention as they kept the tempo and the mood upbeat. humour thrown in and great choreography, all contributed towards the concert being an absolute must-see. Rebecca Wright was outstanding on stage, accompanied by the other two talented divas, she had the audience swaying to foottapping music. You would have never guessed that Rebecca had been up all night with a five-month-
old baby and then stepped onto the stage to put up a spectacular performance the next morning, belting out numbers like Summertime, Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend and I Got You Babe. The concert ended on a high note with an all time favourite Abba medley that had the audience sing along before they grabbed a free sandwich and cake on their way home.

More action needed in fight against cancer N Jami-Lee ew Zealanders suffering from cancer shouldn’t have to raise money online or sell their family home to be able to buy lifesaving medicines. Too many Kiwis battling cancer have been let down by successive governments and an underfunded health system that’s failed to provide them with the standard of treatment they deserve. Sitting in the middle of the two major parties enables me to support good policy, regardless of who came up with it. Just as the Government’s commitment to invest $1.9 billion toward mental health initiatives was welcome news for the health sector, so is the National Party’s pledge to establish an independent cancer agency and put $200 million towards new cancer drugs. There’s an urgent need to increase investment in cancer treatment because the vast majority of Kiwis will know someone who had or has the disease. Let’s hope MPs are willing to work together in the national interest on this matter. There is no party politics to be played when it comes to saving lives. The facts around New Zealand’s cancer rates are startling. More Kiwis die from some form of cancer each year than from anything else. We have the world’s worst rate of
MP for Botany
Ross
deaths from malignant skin melanoma and the worst rates of new cases of leukaemia. So any new funding aimed at lowering New Zealand’s shocking cancer rates should be welcomed. We must also make it easier for people to access specialist care when needed, and our public health system would benefit from increased transparency and accountability. All too often we hear stories about Kiwis who have visited their doctor with concerning symptoms only to be told they don’t have cancer. After their symptoms worsen and their suffering increases, they’re then referred to a specialist who diagnoses them with terminal cancer. By then it’s too late. Too often we hear stories of a doctor who missed the cancer in the first place, yet can hide behind anonymity. There needs to be stronger accountability in place for medical practitioners who repeatedly misdiagnose their patients. The stakes are too high for medical professionals to get these sorts of things wrong again and again.

Howick Village attracts high profile visitors Those of you who have recently been visiting the Howick Village market on Saturdays may have noticed some high-profile visitors. On Saturday, June 29, we had the Mayor Phil Goff visit Howick Village, wandering around the Eco-Day displays and market stalls. He spent approximately three hours enjoying the fabulous hospitality and glorious weather for which Howick is renowned. Several members of the public were able to engage with the Mayor and discuss numerous topics. He enjoyed this visit to Howick so much that he contacted us to revisit three weeks later bringing along a journalist from The Metro. It was an excellent opportunity to give our fabulous village additional profile. While here, we discussed topical issues in Howick – Stockade Hill, the Old Library Building and the future

of Howick Saturday market to name a few. Then last Saturday we had mayoral candidate John Tamihere along to witness the delights of Howick Village. John and his team spent a couple of hours wandering through the market and then up to Stockade Hill to be briefed on the developments at this site. As local body elections draw closer, I am sure we will see further aspiring candidates visiting our village. This is a prime opportunity to ask questions of these candidates and form your views of who will contribute greatest to the future of Auckland and our local community. It is the one chance we get every three years to have a say in who will provide the support necessary to ensure the thriving success of our Village Enjoy your canvassing. t’s packed with energy and sustains with tremendous spirit. The focus of Company, a concept musical being performed at the Harlequin Theatre from July 27-August 10, is a confirmed bachelor who has just turned 35, has three girlfriends but no emotional commitment to any of them. The production reviews his relationship with married couples and soon-to-be married friends. The play is an insightful examination of romantic and marital mores as it gives a commentary on marriage with subtle humour packed in as well as a challenging musical score that the actors do justice to. down. The show is led by Grant Meese, one of New Zealand’s finest musical theatre directors, who says the revival and its success is testament to the relevance of the themes that Company addresses. “Everyone has a Bobby in their life, be it male or female – which may be for various reasons not conforming to traditional notions of marriage or settling down. Everyone who experiences this musical walks away with a smile on their face as they relate some of the themes of the show to their own or their friend’s lives,” he said. Many actors have starred in
the theatrical production of the original Company which is a 1970 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The original production was nominated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards and won six. As for Company at the Harlequin, it’s great to see the coming together of a group of actors who are a mix of local teachers, lawyers and professionals singing their hearts out on stage. Dale Smith, chair of Harlequin Theatre, says t everyone volunteers their service. “It’s all for the love of theatre.” There are 10 shows.

Ormiston to finally get four new footpaths A
fter a decade-long wait and residents pushing for footpaths, looks like construction of much needed footpaths in Flat Bush will become a reality, thanks to the efforts of Year 11 Ormiston Senior College students. Ormiston locals have long waited to have four footpaths built in Flat Bush, which will now be delivered this financial year. The footpaths will be on Ormiston Road, from 249 to Collier Drive; from Murphy’s Road to Lemon Tree Lane; and from Pencaitland Drive to Te Ara Kahikatea. The fourth path will be on Geranium Avenue from Rohi Place to Murphy’s Road. The paths will connect to Pak’n’Save supermarket. Howick Local Board member Mike Turinsky says residents have a group of students supporting a wheelchair-using friend to thank for it. “Ormiston Senior College has wanted Auckland Council and Auckland Transport (AT) to install the footpaths for nine years and in all that time residents have had to walk on the road or on the grass,” he says. “That’s hard for the elderly and wheelchair and mobility scooter users and it’s worse in the rain.”
Mr Turinsky was aware of the issue and, after being elected in 2017, began advocating with AT and the board to have the work done. But he was repeatedly told development of the footpaths was the responsibility of the property owner and developer, and would not happen until the property was developed— so it could be paid for from development contributions. “It frustrated me because residents were trudging through soggy grass or along the road to get to the store. I admit I was hitting a brick wall and had almost given up, but a group of Year 11 Ormiston Senior College students contacted me petitioning for the paths.” When Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore attended the Howick Local Board’s monthly meeting, talking about council’s responsibility for developing infrastructure on council property especially in town centres, Turinsky outlined the issue and Cr Cashmore agreed in principle it was the responsibility of council to develop the footpaths. When a meeting with the students took place with Turinsky at the school, the students explained that they chose this issue to focus on as a class project. They outlined their concerns,
particularly in relation to access for all, including those in wheelchairs. “Our friend Jamie Stanford was born with a spinal birth deformity called spina bifida. The lack of accessibility causes trouble for Jamie and other people who use wheelchairs and mobility tools, simply to get their groceries. It’s a human rights issue,” says OSC student Kush Killa. Mr Turinsky says: “I was pessimistic the issue would be resolved but the students inspired me to try again.” He turned to Cashmore’s office and representations were made to AT asking for it to reconsider. “It’s taken a long time but talking to those students, who were determined to stand up for their friend was a reminder I should not quit.” He says Auckland Transport should be commended too. “Everyone knocks AT but they listened to the concerns and acted on them. Yes, it might have taken a long time, but it has changed its stance.” AT’s spokesperson Mark Hannan confirms saying, “Auckland Transport is completing four missing links in the footpath network along Ormiston Road. The gaps in the footpath have limited the ability of people to walk in the area.”
Bridge club fundraising for hospice The Howick Bridge Club held its annual fundraising event for the Totara Hospice: South Auckland on June 20. This comprised of an auction of goods donated by local businesses and club members plus a bridge tournament which attracted entries from clubs within the Auckland region. Our tireless organiser Mary Wood once again did an excellent job in personally visiting and securing goods, vouchers and services from 112 local businesses and the arts groups, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks. Special thanks also extend to Lenice Clarkson for her valued contribution in organising the auction items, raffles and prizes. Howick Bridge Club has been running the Hospice fundraising event for the past 29 years during which time has raised in excess of $100,000.00 for such a worthy and deserving cause.

I’m taking the opportunity to let you know how I experience the T2 lane after reading the article in the Howick and Pakuranga Times on July the 18th. I’m a regular user of the road and the T2 lane (6am-10am) affects me directly. I travel every morning from Howick - top of Vincent Street to Pakuranga Intermediate school in Reeves Road between 8 and 8.30am. I used to take the very left lane on Pakuranga Road, at Dunrobin Place, and I used to be able to travel in that left lane with only a little bit of traffic plus the buses, up to Gossamer Drive where I turned left. I noticed on those days without the T2, when I was still going in the left lane, that I would sometimes be next to a car in the middle lane and that we would pass each other a few times on the way - meaning that we actually travelled more or less at the same speed. It took me around 15 to 20 minutes to get to work. After the introduction of the T2 lane, traffic on Pakuranga Road seems to be much more congested and I have spent between 30 and 45 minutes to get to work on most days. It should be noted that the travel time data, which Auckland Transport quoted in the article, has been obtained from data collected on four days in the last week of the school term, just before the school holidays, which is not your normal everyday traffic. How can Auckland Transport use this result, based on only a few days’ data and present it as evidence for a successful T2 lane? Personally I think this T2 lane isn’t working, because it has not been thought through properly. Many cars with two or more occupants actually want to go straight on Pakuranga Road or would like to turn right into Stanniland Street or Glenmore Road to schools on that side of Pakuranga Road, or to Saint Kentigern College. Those cars, even if they have two or more occupants, would not want to use the T2 lane, because of the great difficulty they will experience when going across all the lanes to turn right. They would rather stay in the middle and right lanes, not using the T2. So now, the middle and right lanes are even fuller, because all the cars that were usually travelling on the left lane to turn left into Cascades or Gossamer, are forced onto the middle lane. And the T2 lane seems to be empty except for only a few cars that are speeding past. I also feel that it’s very dangerous to try and go from the middle lane back to the left T2 lane just before Gossamer Drive when I need to turn left. It’s only a few metres that have been allowed for getting back onto that left lane to turn left. In general, this T2 lane has been quite a talking point and a lot of people seem to be unhappy and share the same sentiments, with increased travel times evident in all cases. I would like to see this T2 removed or, alternatively, that all cars with single occupants who are turning left at Cascades Road or Gossamer Drive are also allowed in the T2 lane. This will ease the congestion currently experienced by many.

The old library building has progressively become worse forcing Times photo Nick Krause Panuku Development to lock the doors for good.
Panuku is responsible, not the Howick Local Board Re your story ‘Is the Howick Market in jeopardy’ (Times, July 11)? The Howick Local Board are ‘not responsible’ for the 16 Fencible Drive, building – it was Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL), now it is Panuku, who each year pay out $10,000 in rates for it. As the saying goes, sometimes it is not easy dealing with City Hall. In 2009 (when I was chairman of the Howick Community Board), this building was purchased by the Board and Manukau City Council, because of its economic and strategic value for the Howick Village. Most of the time since it has stood vacant, despite two suggestions as to its future. No maintenance has been done on what used to be the Howick Returned
T2 lane a fizzer
I have waited a while to see how the lane works. Basically it doesn’t. The traffic that typically travelled in what is now the T2 lane were there to go into Gossamer and they had to turn left at Gossamer. Now the traffic can’t get into that lane (unless they have 2 or more passengers) so there are crazy manoeuvres going on as cars approach the intersection. A lot switch lanes before they should and who can blame them? The idea is a total balls up but then that typifies Auckland Transport.
Association Club rooms and the Howick Library. In my opinion it is not as dangerous as reported (the asbestos report is challenged by an asbestos removal firm). I personally know of four parties who have expressed interest in purchasing this building, and they all have a community-orientated motive. In my opinion the safety issues are minor and have been used against the Saturday Howick Village Market. Various suggestions have been made by ACPL, and now Panuku, as to the building’s future. None have been realised. It is not the Howick Local Board who are responsible – it is Panuku and previously ACPL for the situation that we face today in 2019.

What’s with these empty buses? Last week you printed a reader’s comment (Times, July 25) about the plethora of virtually empty buses careering about our streets, day in, day out, On top of these, there are also many signed Out of Service or similar. In St Heliers, my friend uses a bus from Glen Innes to St Heliers for his weekly shop. I say to him, “Do you have a timetable for that?” He laughs. “Oh! There’s no need for one – they come every quarter hour or so. I just stroll to the stop and wait! Plenty of room!” I’m glad I don’t have any shares in that enterprise! I travel a lot by car around Pakuranga/Howick/Botany and there is never a trip without encountering many empty or near empty buses, including double deckers, all through the day after rush hour. If there is some explanation for all these trips, it would be good to hear, otherwise, if we are interested in cutting down a seemingly colossal waste of money,
Cockle Bay beds
I am concerned about the potential effects to our shellfish beds at Cockle Bay. Construction on the sea wall has started and a large tracked vehicle is delivering rocks to the wall. This machine is progressively moving out on each trip trying to find a firm route. Sand has been placed along the existing wall and has only one soft patch that could be sorted with a load of ‘race’ rock (which) would allow rocks to be delivered without any further damage to the beach. Mud and silt suffocate the shellfish. Council have been notified.

With only a week to go, more than 80 schools from around the country have signed up to take part in Wattie’s Cans for Good national can collection to help struggling families with food support. The event will run over a fortnight from August 5 to 16 and gives kindergartens to schools nationwide the opportunity to help make a difference by collecting cans for The Salvation Army foodbanks - restocking shelves in the middle of the harsh winter period. With Salvation Army foodbanks around the country already running low on stock and facing high demand for its frontline services, the can

According to Jono Bell, The Salvation Army’s director of community ministries, during winter tight household budgets are stretched to breaking as families face higher living costs associated with heating and health. All cans donated through Cans for Good will go into Salvation Army food parcels enabling kindergartens and schools to make a direct and real difference to those in need in their local community during winter.

help at a moment’s notice. Blanche Lush used laudanum, a tincture of opium extract, during childbirth. It was advertised as “Godfrey’s Cordial for childbirth and comforter for children”. It was used to quieten upset children, sooth teething pains or to induce sleep. Rev Vicesimus Lush was the 20th child of his father, hence the name Vicesimus. His journal is the only record of births in early Howick. He noted in his journal on February 23, 1852 “at 11 o’clock in the forenoon my dear Blanche had another child, a boy, to our great joy. He is a fine fat little fellow”. He was called Alfred but died in the Howick scarlet fever epidemic of 1854 aged two years. The oldest daughters Charlotte [8 years] and Mary [5 years] were taken to St John’s College where Mrs Sarah Selwyn, [the Bishop’s wife] looked after them while their mother was having a baby. He continues next day. “Blanche and baby have been doing well all day. The little fellow is the largest and darkest child Blanche has had. He has a good quantity of dark hair, almost as dark as his mother’s”. He sent a note to the girls telling them they had a new brother and their rabbits, kept for the table, also had babies. Howick’s first hospital was established in 1907 in Selwyn Road. Many Howick residents remember the Howick Obstetric Hospital where mothers spent two weeks before being allowed to resume normal duties at home. Today the old hospital is refurbished as the Gulf Views Rest Home. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

A celebration of Matariki Barnardos Early Learning Pakuranga celebrated the end of Matariki (Maori New Year) earlier this month. On July 5 they planned a night full of celebration to mark the occasion. The youngsters performed a haka and poi dance they had been practising for weeks prior and also gifted a beautiful handmade korowai (Maori cloak) to the centre. The evening was coordinated by Dona

Dance Festival, Kirsten Bell, dance and drama specialist at Cockle Bay School says that this year she will be passing on the baton to someone else. “It is a huge event, and now it’s time for a fresh face and new ideas, there are only so many ideas one can come up with,” she says. The fresh faces come in the form of five teachers teaming up from Cockle Bay School who have been shadowing Kirsten this year. The highpoint she says is seeing the show come together each year. “Best memory is a hip hop dance we did in my second year of organising it. I will never forget carting back to New Zealand 20 LA Lakers caps and t-shirts I got from a side stall in Washington. It was the first year I spoke on stage introducing the show and I soon learnt to give kids that job! We now pre record their voices on the show. “I have loved pulling together this community show. It has been exciting seeing the technology change from fast forwarding tapes into place, to CDs and now simply a press of the button in a slideshow presentation! “Who knows 22 years from now what will it be.”

Culture Night another hit P
akuranga College hosted its annual celebration of cultural diversity in a colourful explosion of music and dance on Thursday July 25. As one of the highlights of the school calendar, Cultural Night has been running for more than 10 years and is eagerly anticipated by the students, who are responsible for all choreography, music and costumes. The evening included performances from a wide range of cultural groups
including Indian, Samoan, Korean, Tongan, Chinese and Japanese. Principal Michael Williams commented, “At Pakuranga College, we are extremely proud of our cultural diversity and we deliberately foster a culture of inclusivity. We feel that it is critical for young people to be globally aware, in order to make a meaningful contribution to the communities of the future.” ■■ Photos BC Photography

A balancing act
It was a chance for boys and girls from age 5-17 to show off their routines and gymnastics skills as they competed in artistic gymnastics and tumbling. The Howick Gymnastics Club Annual Recreational Competition held on July 27-28 attracted more than 400 competitors, judged on the skills they’ve mastered in artistry and form. Times photographer Wayne Martin captured the action.

to fish. Special Olympics HowickPakuranga has played a huge part in Patrick going forward in life as his confidence and skills have improved immensely because of their support. Patrick’s dad Tim Holmes says that if you have a special needs person, the best thing to do is get them into sports with Special Olympics and watch them grow. Age is also no barrier as they can be as young as eight and there is no upper age limit. Special Olympics is also looking for volunteers as without them Patrick would not be where he is today.

All Blacks creaking T
Beachlands’ Hannah Thomas fared very well at the Canoe Slalom Junior World Championships in Poland. Photo supplied
Howick College teen shines on world stage Canoe slalom athlete Hannah Thomas, 17, took joint 5th place in the world in the under 23 extreme slalom race. Thomas, from Howick College, has just returned after competing at the Canoe Slalom Junior World Championships in Poland. This was an incredible feat, as it was Hannah’s first ever time racing in the extreme event. It is a fast-paced event where four athletes go head-tohead launching into the river
off a three-metre ramp onto whitewater and tackle up and downstream gates. Thomas has also just completed World Cup events in London, Bratislava and Tacen and achieved so highly, she has been selected to compete in the World Cup Final in Prague and the Senior World Championships in Spain in September. She also recently received support via a sponsorship from Fuji Xerox which helped her on her journey.
wo games don’t make an international rugby winter, but after a 20-16 win against Argentina and a 16-all draw with South Africa, a rusty All Blacks machine is creaking. I’m not writing off their World Cup chances of making it a threepeat yet, but the competition has improved while some of our older internationals are showing their age. Skipper Kieran Read has not returned to his best after shoulder surgery. Nor have Joe Moody, Owen Franks, Sonny Bill Williams and Ben Smith who are all rusty after long lay-offs. Fortunately, Sam Whitelock is after being very jaded after a long, gruelling 2018. But the painful dislocated shoulder suffered by locking partner Brodie Retallick could be a mortal blow to the team’s World Cup prospects if he fails to make a full recovery. Under the guidance of Steve Hansen and his fellow coaches, most of the above will improve but not to the heights they reached when in their prime. With Liam Squire having made himself unavailable, blindside flanker is still up for grabs though Ardie Savea, Sam Cane and Read have the versatility to cover all three loose forward berths. However while the experienced Read has naturally stated his prefer-
Agnew’s Angle ence for the No 8 jersey, it wouldn’t hurt if he and Savea interchanged positions throughout the game to allow Savea’s superior pace to add penetration off the back of the scrum. With just two tries scored in two tests, the All Blacks attack is not functioning with the thrust it once did although Jack Goodhue’s try against the Springboks was a beaut after Beauden Barrett made a sharp break off a great Williams cut-out pass. Goodhue has a future though he and Williams are not in the same class Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith were in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup triumphs. And Ryan Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown and Ngani Laumape are others staking their claims for starting spots without cementing them. It is also worth remembering versatile Jordie Barrett has yet to be played in his best position of second-five after being given tests at fullback and both wings. I applaud the selectors for starting both Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett against the Boks with the former winning the No 10
jersey and Barrett moving to fullback where he was the All Blacks best back. Mo’unga started slowly, having had two kicks charged down. However he remained cool-headed and sparkled in the second half when Dane Coles and Aaron Smith added spark coming off the reserves bench. Nevertheless it was not a convincing performance with too many errors committed on a day superb defence blunted the attack of both sides. Having recovered from their resounding loss to the Boks, the Australians, never short of confidence, will have gained more from their 16-10 win against the Pumas. Meanwhile Hansen and his brain trust will want to put out their best team against them and could consider starting George Bridge, who has the allround skills of Ben Smith, on the left wing ahead of Rieko Ioane. As Hansen has noted, Ioane went off the boil during the latter stages of the Super Championship. Which is true, but so did a Blues side that gave him few chances. Meanwhile don’t ignore the Springboks World Cup prospects, remembering the All Blacks narrow 20-18 semi-final win against them in 2015. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer
