Winter on the way out

With the latter part of winter being releatively mild, many could be forgiven for thinking that spring was already upon us. This shot by Times’ editor Nick Krause at Bucklands Beach shows a very settled Tamaki Estuary on the outgoing tide with the magnificent Rangitoto dominating the image with a lovely burst of green to the right from Motukorea-Browns Island. A fisherman’s surfcaster sits in the perfect spot. The first day of spring is September 1 although Spring Equinox is on September 23.

Mike King: Bullied boy became the bully By FARIDA MASTER

F

or two years he sat outside the school staff room so that other kids wouldn’t pick on him. Then one day he was invited by the cool kids to be a part of their group. From that day, he turned from being bullied into a bully. Sharing his story of low self

esteem, drug and alcohol abuse with students of Botany Downs Secondary College, mental health advocate Mike King spoke about how he always waited for approval from his dad. It never came. “I thought my dad was the coolest on the planet and I wanted him to look at me with pride and say, “That’s my boy!”

“Instead, I was this ugly child with a really big head and no self worth,” said King, the founder of Key to Life Trust. “They teased me at school. But when I was accepted in the cool gang, they started to use me to pick on vulnerable kids.” Addressing Year 12 students in the school auditorium over two

interactive sessions, King - who is on an I Am Hope nationwide tour was reaching out to students about mental health. Peppered with humour and stark honesty, the former stand–up comedian’s personal narrative was both damning and inspiring. “I knew it was wrong but I went against my instinct and tried to pick

on my best mate because the cool kids asked me to. My biggest fear was rejection. That’s how I moved from being sidelined to becoming the school bully. “By the time I was 13, I had a war going on in my head. It’s also the reason why people like me are attracted to drug and alcohol. ➤ Turn to Page 3

The review affects only council wards and not local board boundaries other than their internal subdivision boundaries, for those who have them. The number of councillors will stay the same – 20 plus the mayor. The council may also review whether local

board members are elected by subdivisions or across the whole of a local board area. Public consultation starts soon. The council notified its proposals for public submissions on August 8. Detailed information and maps will then be available on the council’s website, including how the public can provide feedback on the proposal. Injuries claimed at Little Bucks T

wo people have been injured falling from a crumbling seawall next to relatively new pedestrian pathway at Little Bucklands Beach, two residents claim. Bob and Jocelyn Fyfe of The Parade have raised the issue in the interests of public safety and awareness. “We would like to bring to your attention a safety issue that has been escalating on The Parade at Little Bucklands Beach,” they said. “The road at this northern end has been narrowed, not conforming with NZTA standards, by a path which has been created using railway sleepers attached to the existing roadway on the beach side. “The seawall in this area has eroded to an extent that the public, who used to use it as a path, are now walking on the road. The couple said to solve the problem, the Howick Local Board came up with the current configuration. “The new path created by railway sleepers on top of the road is adjacent to the eroded seawall,” they said. “There is an unprotected three metre drop from the kerb to the sea. We have already had two ambulances sent for people who have fallen into the sea. In one of the cases, the lady, apart from her injuries, suffered extreme hypothermia by the time she was rescued.” They said Auckland Transport was not happy with the idea, however pressure from the Howick Local Board forced the scheme through. “The non compliant narrow road has created a dangerous set of problems for users and residents,” they said. “Fast moving traffic heading south are less than a metre from

people using the existing footpath and residents maintaining the berm,” they said. “The available roadside parking for residents and visitors is now on the beach side and requires them to cross the road (no pedestrian crossings available). There is extensive new house building in this area and visibility is limited by commercial vehicles and the bend in the road.” They maintain the new set up has encouraged the public to continually walk on the seaward side of the road way. “The existing footpath is basically redundant. There is no traffic calming or pedestrian crossings to slow the traffic as all the other beaches in the area have,” the Fyfes said. “Requests to council for a safety inspection team to look at the situation are in vain as the local board are assuring them the problem is now solved. This needs to be sorted

before someone else ends up in hospital severely hurt.” Howick Local Board was contacted for comment. Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart said it is “really upsetting” to hear that members of the community are being injured along this walkway. “I support the continued investigations by the Local Board into safety improvements in this area. As Auckland’s population increases, so do the transportation needs,” Cr Stewart said. “It’s important that Auckland Transport, Council and Local Boards work together to create solutions that keep our communities safe.” She also urges everyone driving in Howick to observe the speed limits and drive to the conditions. “Ours is a close-knit community. It’s important that we are considerate drivers and look out for each other.”

Auckland Transport responds: The Parade does meet the standard for local roads under the Auckland Transport Code of Practice – it is a local road so does not come under NZTA standards which apply to rural roads and highways. Auckland has many roads that are narrower. This road has a speed limit of 50km/h so there is no excuse for traffic to be moving fast. The road has been narrowed to slow traffic, people have a responsibility to drive to the road conditions and to look out for other road users and pedestrians. It is common practice to make roads narrow so that people slow down. The wide shoulder provides an area that can be used as a footpath, it is very safe and is

protected from the traffic by the parked vehicles. Supported by Auckland Transport, the Howick Local Board decided that widening the shoulder provided a cost effective solution to a variety of safety problems including: ■ Keeping people exiting parked cars well away from the seawall ■ Narrowing the road to slow traffic down The sleepers are similar in height to the existing kerb but are painted white, have reflectors nearby and are preceded by clearly marked cross hatching on the road all warning people that they are there. The Local Board is currently investigating further options for The Parade including pedestrian crossing points.

King talks of bullies, booze and telling the world all about it ➤ From Page 1 “Alcohol takes away the shame, embarrassment and hurt, and gave me the confidence to be the real me. “At 17, I was into drugs and this is the life I lead for the next 30 years.” King went on to become a chef and later a popular stand-up comedian as well as an actor in dozens of TV shows. “However, those were very dark days with me being completely smashed and having plenty of public meltdowns.” The wake-up call came when his wife called to say that media were

waiting outside their children’s school wanting a comment from them on how they dealt with their dad’s unruly behaviour. “That’s the time I finally decided to see a counsellor. It’s then I realised that my head was like a boiling cesspool of thoughts. I used drugs and alcohol to put a lid on it. But unfortunately, it’s all the people around you that suffer. They get burnt because the pot is boiling. “The reason why I am telling you this is every person puts a lid on a boiling pot, instead of finding out what the stressful situation is.”

The secret to good mental health, he said, is lifting people up and making sure everyone is included at school and in communities. “Be kind to other people and let them know that they have a value in your life. Lastly, be open and ask for help. “Chances are 80 per cent of young people will have a major crisis before they leave school. But that’s normal. “The reason why no one knows about is because no one talks about it!” Advocate for mental health, Mike King urged students to be inclusive and kind to other kids. Photo supplied

Pageant success a ‘dream come true’

P

lacing highly in the recent Miss Auckland contest was a “dream come true” for Tiffany Pillay. The Golflands local, who has lived within the Howick and Botany area for 20 years, placed 2nd Runner Up in the competition, which saw Emma Gribble crowned overall winner. Pillay entered the competition after stumbling across an application on Facebook shortly after completing her

Bachelor of Laws. “I thought ‘wow, here is an opportunity to use a potential platform to make a difference, what a wonderful opportunity to give back to my community. The same community that has allowed me to grow to be the person that I am today,’” she said. The former Pakuranga College student raised $3400 for Miss Auckland’s chosen charity of Youthline during the competition through events such

as bake sales, sausage sizzles, a high tea and charity quiz night and called it all “an amazing experience”. The recent graduate is currently searching for her first job as a qualified lawyer – a dream she’s had since she was eight years old. “Now I have added another dream to my life and that is to compete in the Miss World New Zealand competition starting in February 2019.”

MIT at risk from proposed immigration changes The Government’s proposed changes to post-study work rights for international students could cost New Zealand 1000 jobs and up to $1.4 billion, and do irreparable harm to tertiary providers like the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. “The Government’s changes are being made on the basis of preventing exploitation, which they should rightly be concerned with, but what they haven’t considered is the damage that will be done to the education sector where it relies heavily on international students,” he says. “Tertiary providers have

warned the Government that their proposed changes will hinder their ability to attract international students who will seek other opportunities in other countries.” MIT has calculated that it could lose up to 50 per cent of their international student intake if a proposal to increase the post-study work visa requirements is implemented. This proposal would require international students studying non-degree Level 7 courses (like graduate diplomas) to study here for at least two years, as opposed to the one year that is required for those studying a Bachelor’s degree.” “The entry criteria for a

graduate diploma requires the applicant to have already completed a Bachelor’s degree, which clearly demonstrates that these students are qualified in their area of study so should continue to have the same post-study work rights as those graduating from a Bachelor’s programme,” says Brown. “If international students decide it’s not worth it, they will simply stop coming here to study. MIT could lose up to $10 million in revenue if this happened, which would result in more than 60 full-time jobs lost and a significant decrease in the number of qualified people able to take up poststudy employment in the

surrounding areas of South and East Auckland.” MIT wouldn’t be the only provider to suffer should these changes go through, says Brown. “Our entire export education sector is at great financial risk if the Government continues with these changes. “The Government must reconsider these proposed immigration changes immediately before they jeopardise New Zealand’s reputation for international study and harm our ability to attract students from overseas.” Education Minister Chris Hipkins has been contacted for comment.

Police and other emergency services responded to a report of a suspicious package at a bank in Botany Town Centre on Monday afternoon. The area around ANZ bank was evacuated as a precaution and the Specialist Search Group attended, a police spokesperson told the Times. “The package was deemed not to be suspicious and the matter has since been resolved.”

Citizenship benefits

Your correspondent Arthur Moore rightly suggests that there should be some advantage in being a New Zealand citizen. The entitlement to benefits such as pensions and housing, education and health services and, even more, the right to vote should be changed. Very few countries allow non-citizens to vote in elections. One huge benefit of these changes would be to incentivise immigrants to get their citizenship at the earliest qualifying time and would further assist in integrating them into the New Zealand way of life. Some would then have to make a choice as their originating country would, in many cases, deny them the right of dual nationality.

AGM attracts full house T

he Fencible Hall was filled to capacity on Saturday for the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association’s (HRRA) public meeting and AGM. Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore speaking on finance and opportunities, produced a range of graphs showing expenditure by Auckland Council and indicating the priority of transport and present planning, and assuring concerned residents that Auckland Council was within its budgetary restraints. Asked what proportion of the graphs were administrative costs, the answer was approximately 40 per cent of budget, and he empha-

sised the importance of strategic planning, but shrugged off questions such as overspending on such things as a mirror and Vulcan Lane, with the answer that it was within the arts budget and it had cost more to erect than expected. A number of comments were made on the difficulties of dealing with council employees and the massive problems caused by runoff, flooding and slippage, due to the infill housing in the Cockle Bay former Heritage Zone below Stockade Hill. Councillor Sharon Stewart spoke of a meeting she is calling on August 16 on the flooding with representatives of various problem catchments.

HOWICK

Chairperson Gayleen Mackereth, in her annual report, told of the wide range of issues HRRA had submitted on this year on behalf of Howick people. She spoke of the importance of the ongoing Stockade Hill views battle and vowed to fight to the end if the final judgment (soon to be announced by the Commissioners) goes against us. She thanked the Defencibles group for their work adding to support for the HRRA fight and urged other younger people to join Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association to have their views heard. She also begged for someone to fulfil the role of secretary

Local historian Alan La Roche gave a fascinating insight into the reasons for the erection of the Stockade on Stockade Hill, its construction, including quarter inch corrugated iron which could repel even cannon fire, and into the number of people housed at the stockade at the height of fear of the Maori invasion. He also told the little known story of the origin the Stockade Hill Christmas tree, planted by Czechoslovakians who were in the Militia who wanted to celebrate Christmas as in their home-

Employment law reform is one of the most talked about issues in New Zealand right now, as businesses across the country worry what might happen to them. And sadly, they are right to worry. The Labour/ Green/NZ First Government’s proposals will wind the clock back on industrial relations, strengthen union powers, and pit employers against their employees, none of which is conducive to doing business. With plans to end the starting out wage, remove 90-day trials for businesses with more than 20 staff, implement consecutive unsustainable minimum wage rises, and bring back 70s-style standardised wage bargaining, it’s no wonder business confidence in New Zealand is at its lowest in 10 years. And despite what the Government is trying to tell us, business confidence does matter. A lack of it means businesses are slower to grow and are less willing to employ or train new staff or lift wages for hard-working Kiwis. Economists are now predicting our economic

growth could drop to 1.5 per cent, when the world economy is MP for Pakuranga forecast to grow by 3.9 per cent. Every lost 1 per cent of GDP means $800 million less in government revenue, which means less money to spend on the things that matter like schools, hospitals, and keeping our communities safe. And employment law reform is only the half of it, as other anti-growth policies like higher taxes, restrictions on foreign investment, and ideological decisions like scrapping oil and gas exploration continue to damage our economy’s ability to grow. Thanks in large part to National’s management of the economy, we saw Kiwi businesses succeed and grow with 10,000 new jobs created every month for the last two years. This Government is putting that all at risk and the only ones to come out on top will be their union-backers. New Zealanders deserve better than a Government with no idea how to grow the economy. ■ Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga

New red light cameras T

wo East Tamaki roads are set to become safer with Auckland Transport rolling out new red light cameras. Accent Drive and Te Irirangi Drive will host two of the six planned cameras set to be rolled out across Auckland in an effort to reduce dangerous driving. The new camera sites, funded by the regional fuel tax, will bring the total number of red light cameras operating in the region to 12, joining the six camera sites that began operating in June. When the new cameras are ready to go live, Auckland Transport will choose which six sites will be enforced, with enforcement rotating between the 12 sites. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the city needs to do everything it can to reduce unnecessary injuries. “Red light running places lives in danger. Last year there were four fatalities and 19 seri-

ous injuries at intersections due to red light running. “The scale of red light running in Auckland is demonstrated by the new cameras installed in June catching 660 people running red lights in just three weeks.” He says installing the cameras is about saving lives – not

revenue raising. “We are publicising where the cameras will be to change behaviour and prevent people being hurt and killed, not to catch people out.” Mr Goff says a previous trial of red light cameras in Auckland between 2008 and 2010 produced a 43 per cent reduction in red light running and an average 69 per cent decrease in crashes attributable to red light running. “Aucklanders have the right to feel safe when they have the right of way to drive or cross a road at a lighted intersection. Over the next ten years we will bring the total number of red light cameras in Auckland to 42,” he said. Auckland Transport Chief Executive Shane Ellison says road safety is the organisation’s top priority. “Installing red light safety cameras is just one tool that we are implementing to make intersections safer, and we

have an ongoing programme to install even more in the next 10 years. “Auckland Council and Government are prioritising road safety initiatives as part of the $28 billion investment in Auckland’s transport network over the next ten years,” he said. Inspector Peter McKennie, Operations Manager, Road Policing says running red lights is just not worth it. “You’ve got to ask yourself; is it worth crashing and risking injury – or worse – killing yourself or someone else? The cameras are expected to be in action by October. ■■ The six new site locations were chosen based on safety risk. They will be at: ■■ Great South Road and Cavendish Drive – two sites ■■ Te Irirangi Drive and Accent Drive – two sites ■■ Great North Road and Rata Street ■■ Great South Road and Reagan Road

A touch of timeless French country vibe Stepping into Cecilia’s kitchen is like stepping into a cottage in the old French countryside.

“I want my home to reflect who my family are and our heritage, and the kitchen was no exception,” she says. Her criteria for Jag Kitchen’s designer Emma Weeber was a classic look, no white and plenty of storage. And she says this is exactly what she got. “The kitchen doesn’t get a lot of light in the afternoon, so the combination of creams, oatmeal and gold bring real warmth to the kitchen that it didn’t have before,” says Emma.

ADVERTORIAL KC13626A

Cecilia’s house renovation was well underway when Emma and the Jag Kitchens team were asked to design and install the new kitchen.

The kitchen boasts warm neutral tones and subdued shades of blue resembling the muted hue of a provincial landscape. Cream profiled cabinets adorned with soft gold hardware, paired with a pastel blue splash back, make the kitchen looks spacious and comforting. Blue and white ceramic vases brought from Cecilia’s home country in South America give the kitchen history and character. Soft pastel and natural tones tie the kitchen in with the space’s unique wallpaper and make the kitchen feel open and welcoming.

CD2078

But despite such a quick turnaround time, Cecilia says Emma never failed to give her realistic timeframes and stick to them.

Jag Kitchens designer Emma Weeber with Cecilia’s beloved poodle in the new kitchen.

Behind the traditional finish, the kitchen has all the space and functionality of a modern kitchen. “We used really clever pullout pantries to take full advantage of the space – there’s one wall with a dogleg in it that presented some challenges in fitting in cabinetry,” Emma says. Hidden behind Dezignatek Thermoform profiled doors are pull-out cupboards and clever pantries that make use of all the available space. “The corner cupboards have handy rotating shelves so that no part of the kitchen space has gone unused.” The occasional glass window cabinets are a pleasing break from the solid cabinet doors, with more beautiful ceramics and pottery on display again

giving the kitchen a timeless French country vibe. LED strip lights are another modern touch, which Cecilia says has been brilliant for adding extra light when cooking during winter or giving the family an alternative to turning the bright kitchen overhead lights on at night. Cecilia says there are three things she loves about her new bench top – the colour, the price and its hardwearing nature. Made from a warm oatmeal coloured engineered

stone (called Blanco Capri, from Spanish brand Silestone), the countertop is stain, scratch and water resistant. The kitchen’s statement feature is arguably the classic butler style porcelain sink with a gold heritage tap. “The sink is handmade in England by a company called Shaws – it’s a brand with a long heritage beginning in the 1890s,” says Emma. “It gives that much more character to the French country inspired style of the kitchen.”

“Everything was completed when they said it would be, and I never had to worry about the kitchen not fitting in with the rest of the renovations. Emma was just so easy to deal with and took the stress out of the whole process. The kitchen was the easiest part of the renovation.” Emma says Jag Kitchens now has their own stone mason and cuts all their own countertops, making the whole process of designing and installing a new kitchen much quicker and more efficient. “I could not be more impressed with the service that I was given from Jag Kitchens,” Cecilia says.

Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

ompulsory church attendance every Sunday for Fencible [soldier-settlers], their wives and children, was enforced on the voyage from Britain and during their seven year military term in Howick, Panmure, Otahuhu and Onehunga Fencible settlements. The extremely harsh and cruel penalties for not attending church muster and church services every Sunday were unfair. If a Fencible missed attending two Sunday musters, he would lose his cottage, his acre of land, and repay the passage money for his wife, children and himself all taken out of his pension fund which the officers controlled. No income, no pension money, no house or land sent many to the debtors’ prison- all for not attending church twice! It is said that about 50 Fencibles in Howick lost their cottage for not attending church on Sundays or similar missed deeds. Most of those who missed the church muster were Anglicans. Those of the Catholic faith were more contentious and attended regularly. These battle-weary retired old soldiers with about 20 years of military discipline now had to work a 60-hour, six days a week building roads looked forward to a “day of rest” to talk to their wives and children, work in their vegetable gardens but, instead, half of Sunday was attending the church muster under officers, some of whom were half their age who had bought their commissions, and were of a different “social class”. A sickness certificate was often not accepted by the young officers. In 1848, the Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, Bishop George Augustus Selwyn said “the duty of spiritual hospitality was performed and we set our hearts upon receiving them on landing with the House of God prepared for their reception”. The church was being prepared for St Stephens School in Parnell, at St Johns College, Kohimarama. When about 800 new immigrants arrived in November 1848 in Howick, their need was

greater. The timbers were carried by the college vessels Undine and Marian to Waipaparoa-Howick Beach, where some local farmers with oxen and carts hauled the timbers up the Selwyn Road ridge to the knoll overlooking the bay. The frame of All Saints Church was put up ready for the first Sunday after arrival on November 21, 1847, although parishioners were wet from a passing shower as they sat on bundles of shingles, as there was no roof. Within a few weeks, the church in the shape of a cross was completed. Bishop Selwyn was disappointed that popular “Shamrock Cottage” grog shop, then called “The Royal Hotel” was the second building completed in Howick. The Catholic former Marist missionary Father Antoine Garin arrived in Howick on January 2, 1848 appointed by Bishop Pompallier and Bishop Phillippe Viard. All these churchmen came from France. Most of the Howick Catholics came from Ireland and helped Fr Garin build a temporary school and chapel with many local Maori contributing. Garin was assisted with his parish work by two Maori from the Mangakohia mission in the Kaipara. Fr Garin lived in a crude raupo cottage presbytery built in 1849. The wooden “Our Lady Star of the Sea” church was completed by February 1854.

Fr Garin planted grapes for communion wine and he had poultry, a cow and a horse. is parish included Otahuhu, Panmure as well as Howick. Panmure and Otahuhu initially had a raupo school room and church until wooden more permanent buildings were built by 1852. The little Methodist Church now in the Howick Historical Village was built in 1852 on Fencible Reserve in Picton Street. For several years, all Fencibles after the Church Muster were marched to the Catholic Church or to All Saints Anglican Church. If you were a Methodist, Presbyterian or other religion, you attended with your church members in the evenings or on Sunday afternoon, and if you did not attend the Catholic or Anglican service, you had a route-march while the rest were in church. In 1866, there were more Methodists in Pakuranga than Howick so it was moved onto Qualtrough’s farm in Pakuranga Road. The new Trinity Methodist Church was built in 1968 for a growing community. Howick’s Presbyterian’s used a Fencible’s cottage initially in 1848 until their Kirk, Scotch or St Andrew’s Church, as they called it, opened in 1873. The graveyard area was reserved for grazing horses and parking gigs while at Sunday church. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

One-stop shopping at Marina Plastic Surgery Questions and answers 1. Why go to Martin Rees for consultation and treatment? Apart from the experience of 30 years, he is readily available if any problems should arise after surgery (which is fortunately rare). He has two of New Zealand’s most experienced Plastic Surgery theatre nurses working with him. They make a very caring and efficient team who like getting the job done properly in a timely manner. They have really good post-op care as well, as this helps to ensure a quality outcome for each patient.

Martin Rees is a very experienced Plastic Surgeon who prides himself on the high quality of his work. He has been practicing Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery for over 30 years with minimum risks and complications for his patients. pass Building. The convenience factor of doing business at the Marina is hard to over-estimate. Gone are the days of having to travel in to the city or Remuera for medical/surgical specialist care. Here is a ‘one stop shop’ for all those medical/surgical and non-medical needs as well!

2. Where is Marina Plastic Surgery located? We are still surprised by the number of people who are referred by their GPs to Marina Specialists in the Compass Building at Half Moon Bay Marina who do not know of the fabulous new development of the Marina precinct —- which includes 1 Medical practice and thePage GP Marina Marina Specialists (Marina Plastic Surgery is part of this group of 23 medical and surgical specialists). There is a gym, pharmacy, child care centre, Ray White Real Estate, Guemon Japanese restaurant, Marina hair salon etc., in the Com-

Due to the large boating community in the Howick/Pakuranga area there is a high incidence of skin cancer. Some of the residents have been over exposed to the sun for many years! So, we do a lot of skin cancer treatment. We use medical non-surgical treatments for early skin cancers only resorting to surgery where absolutely necessary.

We offer annual full body Specialist skin cancer checks (with underwear on!) and for the unfortunate few who grow a lot of skin cancers regular ‘prophylactic’ skin checks are done on a three-six monthly basis when needed. Our policy is to treat skin cancers when they are small so the treatment is easier and if surgery is needed it is less extensive with a smaller neater scar… something everybody wants! 4. What is the kind of surgery you specialize in? With an extensive training in facial cosmetic surgery, I particularly enjoy the challenge of doing difficult facial surgery such as facelifting, blepharoplasty (eyelid tuck), rhinoplasty (nose reduction), otoplasty (prominent ear correction). I like to make sure my patients get

a ‘natural’ look—- none of those over-tightened windswept looks, so common with ageing American film stars! With advances in local anaesthetic out-patient surgery in the last 10 years, it is now possible to do the bulk of these procedures right here in our modern operating theatre at Marina Specialists under IV sedation with full monitoring, two experienced theatre nurses present and the back-up of a full resuscitation trolley and defibrillator, neither of which we have yet needed to use in the eight years that Marina Specialists Theatre has been working. Another extensive part of my practice is breast augmentation, reduction and reconstruction done at Remuera Surgical Care and Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre where tummy-tucks, liposuction and fat grafting (for face and breasts) are also done.

‘We’re here for the kids!’

By Justine Driver

N

o matter what the weather, teachers are here for your kids! Staff at Sunnyhills School stood along Glenmore Road from 7.30-8.15am on Friday as part of a Community Action Day to gather support and raise awareness around current issues faced by teachers. On Wednesday, August 15, Sunnyhills School will close as staff strike to join the national

campaign run by NZEI (our union). This is a decision that is not taken likely. We are incredibly lucky to be in a profession that we love. It’s dynamic and rewarding and every day a different child makes us smile. It’s not just about the pay, it’s about retaining excellent teachers who are supported to give the best quality of teaching and learning. For so long now the govern-

ment of the time hasn’t valued our profession enough to provide schools with funding to meet the needs of all students and staffing for better workloads. Here at Sunnyhills we are fortunate that the wider effects of the teaching crisis are kept at bay. We have quality teachers and quality learning programmes, however this is getting more difficult to maintain. Teachers are choosing to

strike because we care about our kids and the future of education in NZ. By showing our faces on Glenmore Road this morning (Friday), we are hoping to raise awareness and put the face of teachers to the media’s attention around the industrial action planned for August 15. We are encouraging all parents to visit their class teachers and talk to them about the issues we face.

Owairoa out in force

Staff from Owairoa Primary School tried to impress upon the parents how important it is to support the issues they are fighting for. Photo supplied

Owairoa Primary School along with many others will be closed on Wednesday, August 15 to encourage the Government to take the issues of staffing and funding seriously and be more attentive in the current bargaining negotiations. Last week the school observed a Community Action Day where staff were encouraged to engage with their parent community and make them aware of the current dire situation schools

are in. Parents were told of the teacher shortage crisis - with a 40 per cent drop in people training to be teachers; and the number of school-aged children growing in large numbers. There is also a desperate need for more support for children with additional learning needs. “There just aren’t enough teachers to give your kids the education they deserve,” they were told.

The Polish Museum will be hosting a movie screening on Sunday August 12. The Betrayal is Aucklander Ron Jeffery’s wartime adventures as courier, spy and executioner, with all the hallmarks of a spy thriller. Powerful doco-drama. Suitable for ages 16 and older, from 2pm. Museum entry by donation. Polish Museum, 125 Elliot St, Howick.

Showing their love for dance

Musicals was the theme for this year’s Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival bringing primary and intermediate schools across the local community together to showcase their

dancing. Our Lady Star of the Sea School hosted 14 schools on August 6 and 7, while Cockle Bay Primary School hosted 14 schools on August 8 and 9 at the Elim Christian College.

Cockle Bay chose Jellicle Cats from Cats for Year 3 and 4 and Revolting Children from Matilda for Years 5 and 6. Both groups are taught as part of an enriching dance extension programme at

Cockle Bay School. Unlike other competitions, Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival is inclusive of all dance abilities and is simply a chance to show your love for dance.

Our next meeting is at the Flat Bush Old School Hall, corner of Flat Bush School Road and Murphy’s Road on Thursday, August 23 at 10am. Everyone is welcome, admission is free and morning tea is provided. Our guest speaker is Bonnie Robinson, who will speak on ‘Villages without Walls’. Bruce Barrack will also be speaking on ‘Canoeing on the Zambezi’. Contact Wim on 274 0439 or email: Ormistonu3a@ gmail.com.

Star of the Sea concert

A musical concert / dance organised by Our Lady Star of the Sea musicians will be held on August 18 at All Saints Hall, 30 Cook Street, Howick, 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Mending tiny hearts A

University of Auckland bioengineer is part of an international team whose research will help doctors mend tiny hearts. Dr Jichao Zhao from Highland Park worked with researchers from Britain and Denmark using micro-CT to examine tiny donated baby hearts with Congenital Heart Disease. His role was to develop special algorithms for data analysis. “We have developed a novel computational approach, ‘structure tensor analysis’, to visualise and evaluate three-dimensional cardiac cells at a much higher resolution than normal,” says Dr Zhao. This means researchers can demonstrate the anatomy of complex heart problems faster and in more detail than ever before and use 3D printing of the heart for surgeons to examine.

Congenital Heart Disease occurs when a heart is not formed correctly in the womb. In the UK it is the most common birth defect affecting eight in every 1000 babies born. In many congenital heart defects the cardiac conduction system that generates the heartbeat and carries electrical signals around the heart is not in the normal position. When surgeons repair small hearts, they try to preserve this cardiac conduction system. Even so, there is a risk of damage to the system during surgery, because it is so hard to be sure of its precise location and because stitches or patches may need to be placed very close to it. This can lead to a “heart block”, requiring an artificial pacemaker to synchronise the heartbeat again. The new research, with Dr

Zhao’s help, uses very detailed and rapid X-ray techniques showing exactly where the conduction system has developed. “Surgeons can then plan their surgery to reduce the risk of heart block and the need for a pacemaker,” says Dr Zhao. Dr Zhao is a senior research fellow at The Auckland Bioengineering Institute and leads a research team that is investigating effective strategies for cardiac treatment using novel panoramic mapping, structural imaging and analysis and computer modelling approaches.

Stable prices and higher sales F

or the fourth consecutive month Auckland residential property sales were in excess of the number for the corresponding month for the previous year while prices in July showed limited movement. “The major trend in the market at present is that sales numbers are definitely higher than they were last year, and with 830 sales in July were 11.1 per cent higher than in July last year,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. “This trend of higher sales than in the monthly equivalent in 2017 started in April and is providing the current stability we are seeing in prices. “The average sales price in July at $912,487 is in fact the highest average sales price we have recorded in a July, although it is down 1.8 per cent on that for

June. The median price for the month at $810,000 is the same as it was last month, and the same as it was for July last year. “July is traditionally when prices reach their low point for the calendar year, and with sales numbers holding up the signs are there that not only is the market weathering winter well, it is setting itself up to be active in the coming spring,” said Thompson. “Another pointer to prices remaining stable is that new listings at 1057 for the month were down to their lowest level this year, and the trend of declining choice for buyers has been growing since April. “At 4115 properties at month end, we have the lowest stock levels for the past 10 months. While still some way above the squeeze felt during the active

trading years of 2013 to 2017, available choice is definitely declining. “Homes for under $500,000 continued to be well-represented in the sales figures, with sales in this price segment representing 9.8 per cent of all sales. “Sales of homes over $1 million represented 32.3 percent of all sales, with 4.1 per cent of this number achieving a sales price of more than $2m. “Sales of lifestyle and rural properties were up 21 per cent on those for last month with solid sales of rural and lifestyle properties in the Swanson and Pukekohe areas. “Interest in beef and dairy farms in the far north is higher than normal at this time of the year. With listings being limited prices for this type of property remain stable.”

Seven feature in House of Year awards A

Devonport home and a Kohimarama renovation have won this year’s Supreme Awards in the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition. WG de Gruchy Construction won six regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home over $2 million award for their Devonport home. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award. Hargraves Homes Ltd was awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme Renovation of the Year, along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation over $1 million award. Judges said the winning House of the Year was a spectacular build, that made extensive use of New Zealand natural materials. “This is a well-designed and functional house. Its high ceilings and clerestory windows, make it feel very open and spacious. “Timaru Bluestone has been used for the exterior cladding and for interior feature walls. Totara Riverwood had been used on the fascia, ceilings, soffits and decking, along with Rimu Riverwood for the flooring and skirtings. “This house has a warm lived-in feel. The credit must be given to the owners, architect and the team from WG de Gruchy Construc-

tion for the stunning build.” Judges said the winning Renovation of the Year was a detailed renovation that took place while the owners were still living in a part of the home. “This renovation of a classical 1970s Robert Railley-designed home has been crafted to perfection. ■■ Visit www.houseoftheyear.co.nz

rs H Bu ou A dramatic and engaging makeover has turned this ter s as Howick home into a high-and-mighty outdoor-lover with a new office and separate apartment living. The transformation involved extensive rebuilding and remodelling to open the home to modern life and water views while retaining a decent dose of its original 1960s character. The main living space is packed with architectural A u c kla n d features. The detailed ceiling draws the eye to the wonderful light and volume. A bold archway anchors the space, demanding attention in dark weatherboard. This leads to an alfresco room with exceptional water views. Extensive use of glass and the provision of a large daybed enhance the indoor-outdoor connection. Custom joinery delivers form and function in the well-appointed master suite with its built-in headboard mantel, floating dressing table and daybed. The lower level apartment with bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/ dining/living flows to a barbecue patio. Terraced grounds spill down to a spa deck, and further down again to a jetty-style viewing platform.

Home help and companionship wanted To help mature, sociable woman with sharp mind and wide range of interests, but reduced mobility, in her own home (Bucklands Beach). We envisage a few hours per week during the week days, probably spread over 2 part days, perhaps 3, to include, but not limited to the following: • Light household duties – including laundry, light ironing (not general cleaning) • Companionship – including conversation, may include watching a TV show or two, accompanying with supermarket and local shopping, possibly local outings eg movies at Monterey Theatre, events at Uxbridge, Howick Little Theatre, etc Other than the obvious traits of being honest and trustworthy, you would need to be of a caring and empathetic nature, patient, sociable, interested in current affairs, have good spoken english, open to a wide range of discussion topics. A drivers license and some flexibility in hours required week to week would be helpful. In return we are prepared to be flexible as well and offer an interesting few hours weekly contact with a friendly, intelligent, articulate, caring and interesting person. A fair remuneration to be agreed for the right person. Interested? Please phone David on 021 791 896 for more details and to register interest. PR262874

Crusaders show character

I

t took character and a magnificent defence for the Crusaders to deny the frustrated Lions in Saturday’s Super Rugby final at Christchurch’s tattered AMI Stadium. How else can you describe that 37-18 win when the Lions won 56 per cent possession and 66 per cent territory against what All Blacks coach Steve Hansen calls the Crusaders’ Rolls Royce pack that supposedly gives Richie Mo’unga an armchair ride? With nearly 90 per cent wins as All Blacks coach, I admire the laconic Hansen’s record but would respect him more if he acknowledged Mo’unga has outplayed Barrett and the mercurial Damian McKenzie every time they’ve clashed this season. He’s right to cite 27-yearold Barrett’s superior experience with 65 tests compared to 24-year-old Mo’unga’s one, but how is M’ounga going to gain

more if it is judged ahead of the Crusader’s superior form? That is not intended to denigrate Barrett who has been International Rugby Player of the Year over the past two years although left wing Rieko Ioane must have run him close in 2017. However Barrett has struggled against the rush defence since last year’s British and Irish Lions tour and doesn’t cope with the tight marking as well as the elusive Mo’unga who is also the more accurate goal-kicker. While Hansen and fellow selectors Ian Foster and Grant Fox are spoilt for choice when it comes to so many positions, experience, while valuable, should not always take precedence over form. Having also starred at fullback, Beauden Barrett has the pace, sidestep and swerve to be a great attacking centre in the mould of Bruce Robertson outside the likes of Mo’unga and

Ryan Crotty. Despite playing very little rugby because of injury, Sonny Bill Williams returns to the squad at the expense of human cannon ball Ngani Laumape who scored 15 tries in Super Rugby last year. Lively Crusaders left wing George Bridge is another unlucky not to have made the 33-man squad although the All Blacks are well served there by Ioane and Waisake Naholo. However Bridge has been consistently better than the once electrifying Nehe MilnerSkudder whose injuries have blunted his pace and enterprise. But he remains a wonderful talent capable of bouncing back to his best given time. The same applies to hooker Dane Coles who has long been sidelined but has been named in the squad alongside Codie Taylor and Nathan Harris. Having led the Crusaders

Finals footy for Hornets It’s a big weekend for Howick Hornets Rugby League with two teams from the club in finals matches at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday. The Under 13 Girls side will play its final at 12.30pm and

Agnew’s Angle defence against the Lions, it’s a shame Matt Todd’s sojourn in Japan has made him unavailable for the Rugby Championship against Australia, South Africa and Argentina. Particularly impressive was the manner in which the Crusaders consistently sacked the Lions rolling maul from lineouts. Having won back-to-back Super championships in his first two years as Crusaders coach after a successful stint as Canterbury Mitre 10 mentor, Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson has produced a sharp cutting edge. Meanwhile it was great to see the Warriors bounce back from their horror Mr Hyde loss to the Titans with a splendid 18-12 Dr Jeykll win against the Dragons when they attacked well in the first half and defended strongly in the second. Captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck led by example with some wonderful runs while Isaiah Papali’i and Jazz Tevaga continue to thrive in a pack led by Isaac Luke. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Tannah makes New Zealand gymnastics team Twelve-year-old local gymnast Tannah van Niekerk has made the NZ gymnastics team The Farm Cove Intermediate School student – and former Sunnyhills Primary School student - will be representing New Zealand for the second time internationally at the Steps Tour in Perth. Tannah, who has been doing gymnastics for five years, started off at a local club before moving clubs to train as a development gymnast with senior coaches so that she could reach her full potential and work towards her dream of competing at the Commonwealth Games one day. Tannah is on the elite pathway. Her gymnastics career started in step one (10 being the highest) and now competes in step nine, sometimes competing against gymnasts who are 4 years older than her. Her dad Greg van Niekerk said Tannah has shown immense talent and potential and trains 22 hours a week at Tri Star Gymnastics in Mt Roskill. “It requires commitment and dedication,” said Greg. “But with Tannah’s passion and work ethic, she manages to find time to balance school, home and gym life.” Tannah has competed for the Auckland Region at Nationals in Invercargill and Nelson last year and this year will again represent the Auckland Region closer to home in

Tauranga. She has a few national apparatus titles but the one she is most proud of is beam. Last year Tannah completed two senior levels (levels seven and eight) during the competition season, and even though she was only 10 at the time, she managed to place in the top six in the country in her step. “This achievement allowed her to go on to be named as the youngest member of a team of six to represent New Zealand at the steps tour in Singapore. This year the trial was again held in Christchurch and Tannah has again successfully made the team. She will be travelling to Perth to once again represent New Zealand. “With gymnastics being entirely self-funded Tannah and we would welcome any sponsors to aid with her continued growth as a New Zealand athlete,” said Greg.

ucklands Beach Association Football Club (BBAFC) has secured promotion to the NRFL Division One competition for next season. It means two promotions in two seasons after the club gained promotion to division 2 this season. BBAFC president Andy Pullar said it is almost a year to the day since the BBAFC Men’s First team celebrated promotion from AFF Conference to NRFL Division Two, the highest level the club had ever attained. Within the space of one season the team made another leap up the ladder by gaining promotion to the NRFL Division One. “It’s an outstanding achievement in itself, and made even more impressive by the fact that there are still four matches left in the regular season,” said Pullar. The rapid climb through the ranks is attributed to the hard work of the coaching staff, management, and the players over the last three years. “It’s fantastic for a club like Bucklands Beach to be able to

experience success like this using largely locally-based players,” he said. “It was important to us from the start to recruit the right players for the club, Charlie Hoyle (who won the premier league and Chatham Cup last season) was obviously a major coup and his experience has been invaluable to the young players both on and off the field.” The club’s coaching staff are proud to have achieved success with this group. “The players don’t need incentives other than to do well for the club,” said Pullar. “If they are here for any other reason then they are the wrong fit for Bucklands Beach. That attitude has been important to us.” There are many examples across Auckland clubs of short term success achieved without the club’s long term vision in mind. “To be able to achieve the success we have without compromising the values agreed between the coaches and com-

mittee is something that we are all very proud of,” said Pullar. “I believe the club is in great shape moving forward into the first division. The challenge now is to consolidate our place in the 1st division.” BBAFC Senior Convenor Paul MacKenzie said: “We believe BBAFC is a first division club. The first division is full of clubs with proud northern league histories and we are looking forward to trying to establish ourselves within these big clubs.”

What helped get BBAFC in the NRFL Division One: ■ Expertly coached by coaching staff of Head Coach Murray Saunders, assisted by Scott Foster and Ben Murphy bringing years of playing and coaching experience. ■ Experienced players like Scott Foster, Charlie Hoyle, Mitch Healy bringing their knowledge and understanding to the team in playing NRFL ➤ Turn to Page 23 football.
