Investigation into school finds nothing O

ranga Tamariki – the children’s ministry says it hasn’t found any evidence to support claims of bullying and sexual assault at a local primary school. The finding has angered one parent. Macleans Primary School came under fire recently after a parent went to police

to report an incident of sexual assault on her young son by another student. It was alleged that a group of senior school students had threatened four junior school students - ‘Pull down your pants or we will kill you”. One of the students is then claimed to have sexually assaulted a younger

student. A parent who asked not to be named said her son told her about the bullying and said his friend had been touched inappropriately by one of the bullies. She said when the incident was reported to the school, nothing was done and the bullying continued. “We took all this infor-

mation to the headmaster, horrified obviously, and all the school did was ask my son to identify the older students involved, which he did. "The headmaster spoke to the older boys and asked, ‘did you do it?’ and they said ‘no’ and the school considered the matter closed.” The case was passed on

waroa. Heard of it? It’s a stretch of pristine beach, that was being sold off in 2016 for private development. That was until 40,000 publicspirited Kiwis put their hands in their pockets and raised a staggering $2,259,923.21 to buy it and make it part of Abel Tasman Park. It made news all over the world. It’s amazing what people power can achieve – ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way’ or so they say. Now, thanks to online platforms such as Give-a-Little, ordinary Kiwis can raise money for a cause that they believe in, without just resorting to pounding the streets or writing reams of letters. It’s called crowd-funding, and it’s helping effect change everywhere. Janet Dickson dearly hopes that the potential power of crowd-funding will aid her ‘David and Goliath’ fight against Auckland Council’s plans for Stockade Hill. As recently reported in the Times, Janet is appealing Council’s decision to allow buildings up to 12 metres high to surround Howick’s historic Stockade Hill – taking away the famous 360-degree views. Her task is daunting. And

expensive. The bill for legal representation and the amount of expert evidence required to take her appeal all the way to the Environment Court is huge. To have any chance of success, Janet has been told she could need to raise up to $300,000 to cover all the costs. “It’s a huge sum of money I know – but the Council said the community’s previous appeals had failed as we lacked strong enough expert

evidence,” said Janet. The ‘Save Stockade Hill’ Give-a-Little page has been live for four weeks and has received 120 donations so far. Whilst generous locals have been doing their bit, surprisingly the largest amounts have come from individuals further afield. Donations have included $1000 from the UK, $500 from Singapore and $200 from Australia. Some Howick business people have also started stepping

up to aid Janet Dickson’s cause. “We’re so grateful to our local business owners, such as the Spillers. Their generous donations are vital to the success of the appeal – we’re hoping that many more will help us,” she said. To date, with Give A Little contributions and direct donations to the Save Stockade Hill Views ASB bank account, the campaign has raised nearly $24,000. But almost as soon as the money comes in, it goes out again to cover the mounting appeal costs. So far, funds have let Janet Dickson and her supporters lodge the appeal, engage Alan Webb, a top Auckland barrister, and commission preliminary work by an expert town planner and landscape architect. The next stage is for the legal team to meet with Council on December 18, a meeting Alan has described as ‘pivotal’. Jim Donald, a well-known local figure and one of the appeal group, knows that without donations, their fight could stall. “To all the people who have given us money to get us this far – thank you. We can only hope that the money keeps coming and that we can keep going.” Certainly, as readers of the Times will know, there has

been no lack of interest in the battle to save the views from Howick’s most famous landmark. Public response to this issue has been huge. In 2017, a petition against the up-zoning received 6700 signatures and in August more than 200 people turned up to the special commission hearing at Fencible Lounge. Robert Scott, the Chair of the Special Committee, remarked that the public turnout was more than the committee had ever seen at a hearing. Janet is hoping that as well as counting on people’s intense interest and support, many will now help fund the fight. You don’t have to be an accountant to know that getting $300,000 just from small donations is a daunting prospect - and one that raises a lot of questions, the principle one being, are people willing to put their money where their mouths are? At last count, the population of Howick is around 130,000. So, would 30,000 people each give $10, or possibly 60,000 each give $5? It’s the old ‘price of a cup of coffee’ argument but, actually, when you look at it like that, it’s not a lot to ask. ➤➤Turn to page 3

Town centre takes shape O

ne of Auckland’s fastest growing communities is about to undergo a significant transformation, with the construction of a new $200 million-plus town centre being built from scratch in southeast Auckland. Plans have been unveiled for the Ormiston Town Centre, a newly created urban environment that will include retail stores, restaurants, a gym, movie theatres, a library, an aquatic centre, and a range of public open spaces that will connect to the neighbouring park. “The Ormiston community is experiencing phenomenal growth, and the Town Centre is going to be a massive transformation for the area,” said Todd Property Managing Director Evan Davies. “It’s going to create an exciting new focal point for the community, and we are really excited to see it begin to take shape.” Built on a 4.5ha site beside Barry Curtis Park, construction is now

underway for the 40,000sqm Town Centre, which will include 100 retail and commercial tenants, a three-level parking structure and four major anchor tenants, including The Warehouse, a HOYTS complex, the existing PAK’nSAVE, and an additional supermarket. Designed by NH Architecture of Melbourne and Jasmax of Auckland, the centre has a contemporary architectural design, setting it apart from traditional closed-in suburban malls, or big box retail developments. Instead, the Town Centre will integrate seamlessly into the urban landscape via streets, alleyways and public open spaces. Compact and pedestrian friendly, the centre will have a strong focus on food and entertainment, featuring a dining lane, a quality food hall, a restaurant precinct, along with an 8-cinema entertainment complex. “Ormiston Town Centre is not just about bringing retail to the area. It’s

about creating new community spaces, where people can come together to eat out or just relax with friends and family, and its location next to Barry Curtis Park makes it very unique,” Mr Davies said. Todd Property Group is working in partnership with Auckland’s redevelopment agency Panuku to develop a 19ha site in Ormiston, which includes residential housing and the Town Centre. Located 24 kilometres from Auckland’s CBD, about two thirds of the overall Ormiston development has either been completed or is underway, including commercial

Stockade Hill still needs community ➤➤From page 2 Certainly, it seems this cause is important to many people all over Auckland – in fact to people dotted all over the world! However, without a major benefactor coming forward, it’s going to

It was lost (on a technicality) but the judge asked Council to do something – they created Plan Change 3 which finished recently and delivers a 137 degree viewshaft. Janet Dickson’s current appeal is pushing for retention of the 360 degree viewshaft and to not have

any three storey buildings in the first row of properties surrounding the hill. ■■ If you would like to help Janet Dickson and fund the appeal you can do so by visiting https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/stockadehillviews or donating direct to the Save Stockade Hill Views Fighting Fund ASB bank account 12-3040-0001191-00.

munity, the population of Ormiston is predicted to balloon by 36,000 between 2013 and 2028 – the size of a town like Gisborne. Howick Local Board Chairman David Collings said community facilities were a priority for the Ormiston and Flat Bush communities, with a new library planned for the Town Centre and an aquatic centre, along with a variety of transport options, including cycle ways and bus facilities. WWII veteran passes away L

ocal WWII veteran Jim East has died after a long battle with illness. James Wilson East (Jim) passed away on November 29 aged 93. A life member of the Howick RSA and respected member of the Howick community, a private service was held for Jim on December 4. The Times reported in March 2009 that Jim was presented with the Times War Veteran Community Service Award. Jim, the report said, kept his acceptance speech brief as emotions took over when presented the award by Times Newspapers managing director Reay Neben at Howick in the Park / Military Tattoo. Jim has lived in the Howick and Pakuranga area since the 1960s. He gave annual school speeches for many years and frequently lent a hand to host between 200 and 300 veterans for lunch at the Howick RSA on Anzac Day. Mrs Neben said at the 2009 award ceremony, “Returned servicemen are a major part of our community and it’s important for the Howick and Pakuranga Times to acknowledge those war veterans still active in our community.” In the NZ Herald death notices said Jim is the “dearly loved husband of Madeleine, and the late Noeline. Loved father of and father in law of Karryn and Gordon Trethowen, Robyn and Grant Dunningham, and John East. Pop of Natalie, Kim, Scott, James ,Paul, Ben and Max, and Old Poppy of Amara and McKenzie”.

Ministry says no evidence ➤➤From page 1 Macleans Primary principal Brian Bayly says, “The safety and wellbeing of our children and young people is our top priority. Oranga Tamariki has completed an assessment of concerns raised with them and has found no evidence of bullying or sexual assault. “As a school we work very hard to address matters in line with best practice. We also work very hard to equip our students with a broad range of knowledge and skills – including social and educational – to give them excellent foundations that will enable them to be ‘the best that they can be’, as citizens of our school, this community and in their future lives. We thank our school community for their continued support.” The parent who asked not to be named was approached for comment on the findings. “My son was bullied daily at Macleans Primary and was very distressed. The school failed to take my concerns seriously and after he identified the children responsible, the bullying intensified,” she told the Times. “Due to the lack of support from the school, I moved my son to another school and am very happy with my decision. “Neither my son nor I have been contacted to discuss what happened and so their conclusion that nothing occurred is farcical.”

Stall holders, who have lovingly handmade their unique products, are there to share their passions and you will have the opportunity to buy delightful hand-crafted gifts for the special people in your life. Hitomi Fujii is one such crafter who produces beautifully scented candles hand-made using soy wax blended with fragrance oils which are healthy in the home. Unlike many of the mass produced candles, Hitomi is proud that her candles are phthalate free, zinc and lead free and paraffin free. Born in Japan, Hitomi settled in Auckland nearly thirteen years ago. She enjoys being creative and began candle making as a form of therapy. Originally from Bulgaria, Vaklina Atanassova is another highly creative crafter. She is a regular stall holder at Classy Crafts, and can be found there spinning many different types of yarns including alpaca, silk, merino and other fibres which are available for purchase. She also converts this hand spun yarn into beautifully knitted or crocheted hats, (topped with mink or rabbit pom poms) and prayer and comfort shawls. Vaklina also enjoys making jewellery from natural products

Understanding Santa

In society, at present, there seems to be a problem with the person of Santa Claus. If the average person realised that St Nicholas was the original Santa Claus, it may help them to understand the “spirit” of the person. St Nicholas was a Bishop of Myra, which would now be in modern day Turkey. His vehicle was a sleigh and he

cared for street kids and saved some girls from prostitution by his generosity. The Dutch called him Sinter Klaus and took him to America. From there he became Santa Claus. n our 2018 Christmas Feature, we’re Unwrapping Christmas with the help of the East Auckland Ministers’ Association. Each week, we’ll unwrap a distinctive facet of Christmas. In more recent times, pregnancy tests and rapidly improving scanning technology means women can find out what they’re having even earlier. It’s even become fashionable to throw “reveal parties” where a baby’s gender is unwrapped ahead of the traditional nine month wait. But for Mary, the mother of Jesus, the reveal party was really early. And accurate, too. Angelic visitation definitely qualifies as a sure thing. Mary is a respected figure in many Christian traditions, some more than others. Yet there’s a gritty reality for Mary that is sometimes glossed over. This was no easy journey for this young, Jewish woman, likely no more than 14 years old. The angel is certain that Mary is highly favoured and the news of the impending birth is great. But the Bible records Mary’s initial response to this visit as being deeply troubled, even confused. Favoured by God, but no less human because of it. It was only natural for the girl, Mary, to have some concerns not least because unwed pregnancy was a little different back then. You could get stoned for it. And yes, she was going to give birth to the son of God, but, as any mother knows, all gifts come with some work included. She had to change the baby Jesus’ nappies, sooth him when he teethed, teach him to walk (so he could do it on water later), and patch up his grazed knees. She had to cook the meals and wash his clothes and do all the things that parents do for their children. Despite the questions, Mary embraced the bigger picture: the son of God is coming into the world. She will be part of the mystery of God become flesh. “I am the Lord’s serv-

Reveal party like no other.

ant,” she says, “May it be to me as you have said.” Mary chose the road less travelled and it made all the difference. She chose the path of surrender and of sacrifice as she grasped the possibility that God was making his way into the world in a way that defied expectation. She, more than any other, understood the vulnerability and intimacy of this moment, as the Creator of the Universe was born to a young peasant girl in humble circumstances. And she, more than anyone, had a front row seat as the baby Jesus became a man and changed history. God continues to extend favour to those who struggle to understand how they could possibly have any part of God’s attention. In the story of a young peasant girl, we discover the astonishing possibility that we are deeply loved. Christmas is a time to discover the unlikely and the overlooked, even us, are welcome to be part of God’s grand reveal. The East Auckland Ministers’ Association comprises over 65 churches in the Howick Ward area and would be glad to welcome you to a Christmas service this year. Come unwrap Christmas for yourself – it’ll be worth the effort. Reverend Brett Jones Pastor cession community and exec member East Auckland Ministers Association

Excellence in teaching

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, December 6, 2018 — 11

Yolande Franke, Howick Intermediate principal and Subash Chandar K, curriculum leader of Mathematics at Ormiston Senior College have been both shortlisted for the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Award. By Farida Master

Y

olande Franke, principal of Howick Intermediate School is one of the 15 inspirational educators nominated from 2000 applications for the Australian Scholarship Grant (ASG) National Excellence in Teaching Award. An email informing her that she has been shortlisted as one of the inspirational educators on a regional level, took her by surprise. She soon discovered that it was one of the school parents who had nominated her. “It’s great to be acknowledged by a parent for the regional award and it is an opportunity to be considered a finalist,” she says. For 24 years the National Excellence in Teaching Awards has provided communities with the opportunity to formally recognise and thank outstanding teachers and leaders across for categories-early learning centres, primary schools, secondary schools and special school. The official recommendation reads: ‘Yolande is passionate about giving every student the very best possible education by adopting a personalised approach. As school principal Yolande is committed to creating a school tone and culture that fosters high expectations, posi-

tive values and character development as this is critical to a safe, happy and supportive learning environment’. Ian Fox former principal of Bucklands Beach Intermediate who provides principal appraisal support says that he has watched Yolande progress since that time and has been witness to just how

much she has done to lift the school. “Yolande well deserves this award as since her appointment at Howick Intermediate School she has taken it from a school with many problems, where local in-zone parents were choosing any school but Howick Intermediate, to one now that is

certainly the school of choice for local children. “Yolande has made this turnaround in a very short period of time through her energy and hard work. I believe both she and the school deserve some recognition as this is a wonderful achievement.” Subash Chandar K, curriculum leader of Mathematics at Ormiston Senior College has also been shortlisted for the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Award. The citation for the awardwinning educator reads: `Subash became a teacher to inspire the next generation of creators and innovators. At the same time he says his students inspire him to constantly question his teaching pedagogies and push himself towards the future, though he admits to often falling behind. `He is in constant pursuit of meaningful and contextual tasks to increase student engagement because of the variety of learning styles among the students in his class. ‘He is driven by the thought that he needs to prepare students for the future’. The shortlisted educators now have to submit a 1200 word essay and responses to five questions on education and teaching in video format.

Old4new crew back to save lives Kiwi boaties across the country will have the opportunity to check and upgrade their lifejackets thanks to Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign back again this summer. From December 1, the Old4New van will visit popular boat ramps – including Half Moon Bay on December 15 - and key locations all over the country, giving boaties the chance to bring in their old, damaged or out-of-date lifejackets for a great discount on brand-new, quality Hutchwilco lifejackets. “Lifejackets save lives, but old lifejackets are no good in an emergency,” says Coastguard CEO Patrick Holmes. “Lifejackets that are over 10 years old should be replaced even if they look ok to the eye. Seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float which is a serious concern in an emergency. “Worryingly, many people are also still using lifejackets filled with kapok – a fluffy plant fibre similar to cotton which can absorb water. These lifejackets are extremely dangerous so if you have one, destroy it immediately and replace it with a new, modern one.” Since the inception of Old4New, over 10,000 old or damaged lifejackets have been traded in and upgraded, meaning thousands of Kiwis are now safer out on the water. Locals can visit between 1pm-4pm at Half Moon Bay Boat Ramp, Ara-tai Rd, Half Moon Bay. For a full location schedule visit www.old4new.nz or contact Coastguard on 0800 BOATIE (262 843).

he formal ribbon-cutting of the $20m Pakuranga Medical Centre was done by Minister of Health Dr David Clark on Monday evening. The two-storied, state-ofthe-art, people-centred practise changes the way doctors and nurses work. Offering patients multiple services all under one roof since its informal opening in October, the well-designed Pakuranga Medical Centre pushes the boundaries for health care—accommodating around 15 consulting room not only for GPs but also for a podiatrist, and specialists including psychologists, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons. Accompanied by MP for Pakuranga Simeon Brown and DHB chief executive Counties Manukau Margie Apa, the minister said that the new centre exemplified how integrated care can start with primary care. “Having a multidisciplinary team working together is invaluable for patient outcomes, this is what patients need.” Medical director Eileen Stables said that the new lightfilled building fundamentally changes the way the doctors and nurses work. Pakuranga Medical Centre’s general manager Dale Shepherd summed up the move from the earlier premises down the road to the brand new, purpose–built medical centre saying, “It’s like moving from a leaky tent to the grandeur of Taj Mahal.”

new community partnership between local residents and Pakuranga College is providing an opportunity to reduce waste and help low income families. The man responsible for this initiative is local resident, Dr Hisham Alshaikhli, who is a lecturer at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). “I was thinking about buying a food stand to put outside my house so that local people could share surplus produce,” he says. Alshaikhli’s two children both attended Pakuranga College until recently. When he and his wife Luma attended the school’s annual open day, they met Dudley Young, who teaches Technology at the school. The two men quickly hatched a plan to produce high quality food stands so that produce could be shared in the community. Young says, “As part of the curriculum, our Year 13 students are required to collaborate on a project for a real client. As part of this, they must meet the client’s requirements, using the most appropriate materials and techniques at their disposal. “We have produced four food stands for Alshaikhli’s project.” To make the final product as sustainable as possible, students used as many recycled materials as possible; even making use of

the corrugated metal roof panels that were recently replaced on the college’s Technology block. “This scheme provides so many benefits,” he says. “It reduces waste by allowing residents to share excess produce, as well as using recycled materials for the stands themselves. It also helps low income families, who may be in need, and brings the community together.” The food stands have now been distributed throughout Auckland, with one outside Alshaikhli’s house on Aviemore Drive. Others have been taken to Laingholm Community Hall and Onehunga Primary School. The final stand will be installed outside Pakuranga College. As part of next year’s project,

Mr Young aims to use more recycled materials. Local companies or individuals who would like to donate off-cuts of timber can contact him at the school: yng@ pakuranga.schoo.nz. Local residents and representatives of schools and community groups who are interested in setting up a food stand can visit the Fruit and Veg Stand Group on Facebook for more information.

hey may be small in number but when it comes to organising events, the Rotary Club of Highbrook have always given it all they have to reach the winning post. They are currently working on the 2019 Waipuna Conference Suites Fun Run Walk to be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Highbrook Park. Rotary Club of Highbrook has been organising and managing the Fun Run Walk for the last five years which has attracted over 2500 participants and raised over $120,000 that has been presented to local charities that support the local community. The event is promoted through businesses in east and south Auckland communities, encouraging participation for a good cause, while creating an environment focussed on fun, fitness and social interaction with one another. In 2018, the main beneficiary from the Fun Run Walk was Middlemore Foundation. A donation of $16,500 was made to the foundation for the purchase of a much needed ‘AudioStar Pro’ for the Audiology Department at the Manukau Super Clinic. Nelson Balisa, Charge Audiologist at Manukau Super Clinic explains that the machine is a diagnostic audiometer which is capable of testing infants’ ears from as young as ninemonths-old. It is used for different types of hearings tests. The AudioStar Pro has been in use since August this year and Nelson says that the equipment has made their clinic much

more flexible and efficient. As a result, the Audiology Department is now able to see more patients and children with more specialist type hearing needs. In the past with the standard audiometer, the audiologists could only test children’s ears from four years and above. The new equipment additionally provides the audiologists with more confidence in the results, especially when dealing with a patient who has or is facing permanent hearing loss. “The AudioStar Pro will continue to make a significant difference to the clinic through its flexibility, ease of use and enabling a considerable more number of at high-risk patients to be tested,” he says. The Rotary Club of Highbrook is now looking forward to supporting Middlemore Foundation and helping them with replacing an Ultrasound Machine for Kids First Maternity Assessment Unit. The machine has recently broken down and cannot be repaired. The Fun Run Walk supports other local charities too, and last year this included Pillars, MAC centre, Flat Bush Primary School and Make-AWish NZ. ■■ You can help: By participating in the event which includes a 1k and 5k walk and 5k and 10k run or as a volunteer on the day. The entry cost is $20 per person. Any support is greatly appreciated. Please visit www.higbrookrotary. org.nz to register.

uoyed by the success of its Ioniq hybrid and EV, Hyundai has charged in with a trendy, compact, two-wheeldrive SUV that’s 100 per cent electric. Kona petrol came from nowhere, capturing a big slice of the action; year to date August 31 it ranked 14th in passenger car and SUV sales. Offering popular and practical Kona as an EV is a master stroke, but there are a couple of ‘buts’. However, let’s look at the positives first. Kona Electric has kicked range anxiety well and truly

into touch. Officially its range is 480kms, but Hyundai reckons Kona Electric will do 400kms in real world driving. Go conservatively in Eco mode and 450km is easily achievable. Kona Electric offers surefooted handling and comfortable ride, the additional weight of the under-floor batteries keeping the centre of gravity low. The Elite model tested here comes highly specified, with most of the comfort, convenience and safety features that you need and didn’t know you needed. Which brings us to the first sticking point: charging. If you don’t install an extra-cost AC

fast charger in your home (nine hours to fully charge) or use a public DC fast charger, charging it up via conventional wall plug takes a whopping 43 hours! Secondly, price. This rangetopping Elite comes is a hefty $79,990, double the price of a Kona 2.0-litre 2WD petrol. The lower spec Kona Electric is $73,990. But consider this: Kona Electric is cutting edge technology, and that costs. Plus you’d have to step up to something exotic to get 400kmsplus off a single charge, which makes this eSUV a strong proposition if you can afford the price of admission.

Communities celebrate first day of summer A

rain forecast didn’t deter locals from turning up to celebrate the first day of summer at the Ormiston Activity Centre at Barry Curtis Park on Saturday. In fact the activity centre was so packed that there wasn’t enough room for a lot of people to do the free physical fitness workout led by personal trainer Eric Wang, supported by Will Liu. Peter Caccioppoli, Senior Activation Advisor, Parks, Sports and Recreation, Auckland Council was impressed with the turnout. “I’ve never seen such a big turnout at any of our programmes,” he said. Organised by Peter Young, Howick Local Board member incharge of the ethnic portfolio, the event featured members from six local groups including Botany & Flat Bush Ethnic Association, Rainbow Celebrating Life Trust, Rotary Club of Auckland South, Lion’s Club of Howick, Shenzhen Association and NZ Chinese Art & Caring Group Inc. There were non-stop activities and performances that included Line dancing, Bollywood dancing, Chinese folk dancing and live music by ethnic groups. Also spotted enjoying the cultural diversity at the event were Howick Local Board member

East Tamaki’s Auto-Mobile Mechanics is a member of the international Bosch Car Service Network, ensuring support and access to the world’s best diagnostic tools and resources used in more than 60 countries. Affordable centres lead the way N

ew Zealand’s ‘more affordable’ main centres, particularly Dunedin and the wider Wellington region, continue to show a strong rate of growth in a cooling market. Dunedin, with a relatively affordable entry-level price coupled with attractive premium areas, continues to appeal to a variety of buyers, leading to strong quarterly value growth of 3.8 per cent. The wider Wellington region, with quarterly growth of 4 per cent, continues to see values steadily increase as buyers continue to be attracted to the more affordable outer city areas such as Porirua and the Hutt Valley. At the same time, the ‘top-end’ of the market – those areas with average values above one million such as the Queenstown Lakes – are generally experiencing a cool down in market activity and growth. The latest QV House Price Index shows nationwide residential property values have increased steadily over the past year by 3.5 per cent and by 1.3 per cent in the three months to November. The nationwide average value is now $681,545. Meanwhile, residential property value growth across the Auckland Region increased by 0.4 per cent year on year and by 0.1 per cent over the past quarter. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,050,647. QV general manager, David Nagel said, “Our latest insight reflects what we’re seeing and hearing in the market; there is still plenty of activity taking place following the ‘spring surge’ in activity although

to keep listings at a healthy level although the busy Christmas period may reduce activity slightly as people hold of selling until things quieten down in January and February.”

Recently announced loosening of the LVR restrictions should inject energy into the market.

value growth is fairly modest overall.” “Dunedin and the wider Wellington region continue to lead the way, where value growth remains strong. These regions appeal to a broad range of buyers, particularly first home buyers and investors, due to their relative affordability

and higher yields on offer. These factors enable the values in these regions to continue their upward trend, even in a cooling market.” “The recently announced loosening of the LVR restrictions should inject energy into the market although I wouldn’t anticipate its impact will be overly significant. In

the big scheme of things, it’s still a relatively minor change although it may result in new first home buyers and investors entering the market in the New Year, which could drive further value growth.” “We’re expecting more of the same throughout summer. The warmer months should continue

Value growth remains slow across Auckland’s suburbs. North Shore values rose 0.2 per cent in the year to November and by 0.1 per cent over the past three months. The average value there is now $1,215,601. The former Auckland City Council central suburbs dropped 0.2 per cent year on year and by 0.1 per cent over the past three months and the average value there is now $1,239,592. Waitakere values increased by 0.6 per cent year on year and by 0.6 per cent over the past three months. Manukau values increased by 1.7 per cent year on year and by 0.9 per cent over the past three months; Papakura values rose 1.0 per cent year on year but dropped by 0.6 per cent over the last quarter and the average value there is now $698,825; Franklin values increased 1.8 per cent year on year and Rodney values were up 0.8 per cent year on year. QV Auckland property consultant Hugh Robson said, “The market appears to be fairly steady at the moment and I am certainly noting a lot of activity from first home buyers.”“We’re continuing to see that tidy or renovated properties in good locations are selling quickly and there is a lot of focus on new subdivisions.”

Give hope to those with nothing this Christmas. Many of us are thinking about how we’d like to celebrate Christmas and maybe what we’d like to be under the tree for our families—like a new phone, toys for the children, a holiday in the sun or just some quality family time. But for those Kiwis living day-to-day just trying to make ends meet, Christmas is a time of stress, struggle and sadness.

Their Christmas wishes are typically more basic and urgent in nature—like a place to sleep for the night, a way to pay the bills that are piling up or just how to feed their family each night. This Christmas, up to 17,000 families will

ites to win the Halberg Team of the Year award. It was a courageous effort by a gritty bunch of girls who defended strongly throughout the tournament, especially in their 2-1 bronze medal win against a Canadian team that had greater speed and strike power. Grace Wisnewski scored twice in the first 13 minutes, her first in 16 seconds, a record for the fastest in the tournament’s history and she was unlucky not to have had a hattrick. Having earlier beaten Finland 1-0 and Uruguay 2-1 to qualify, coach Leon Birnie wisely fielded a second string team in the 2-0 loss to Ghana. That allowed him to field fresh legs in the massive 4-3 penalty shootout quarter-final upset against Japan Champions Spain beat New Zealand 2-0 in the semi-finals before beating Mexico 2-1 in the final after New Zealand won their bronze against Canada While Wisnewski was the attacking star, champion goalkeeper Anna Leat was the rock on which a stubborn defence prospered. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

aving returned from the dead in the 12th round, Tyson Fury was robbed when his WBC heavyweight boxing title bout against champion Deontay Wilder was declared a split draw in Los Angeles on Sunday. Had justice been served, it would have been one of sports greatest comeback stories after the selfstyled 33-year-old Gypsy King has been treated for drug addiction, alcoholism and mental health issues since relieving Wladimir Klitschko of his handful of titles in 2015 which now belong to Anthony Joshua. Renowned for a mouth that never stops singing his own praises, Fury also showed a big heart when climbing off the canvas in the ninth and 12th rounds after renowned KO puncher Wilder had lowered the boom. The first was from a bazooka right and the second from a rightleft hook combo that looked to have knocked Fury out. But, like Lazarus, he rose from the dead to take the fight back to a bewildered Wilder. It was a great contest between a clever boxer who knows how to feint, jab and weave and a feared slugger who has dynamite in his hands but can’t box. Up until now he hasn’t had to, winning 39 of his previous 40 fights by KO. But against a boxer of Fury’s skill,

Howick wins national sevens championships H

owick College’s senior girls Rugby 7s team have become national champions after winning the Youthtown Condors Sevens. It is the first time they have ever made it to the finals and went through with six tournament wins to win the title. They will now go on to compete in the Sanix tournament in Japan next year. The senior team is captained by Hinemoa Watene who represented NZ in the U18 rugby 7s team and won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in

Argentina. Both teams came through top of their pools and entered quarter finals on the second days of their respective tournaments The senior girls lost to St Mary’s last year in the quarter finals and were determined to make amends. St Mary’s were one of the favourites for this year’s final The U15 girls lost in the semi finals to Southern Cross in the Auckland competition and met them again in their pool play and showed their skill level and fitness to beat them.

The senior girls finished second in the Auckland competition which is the qualifier for Condors, losing to MAGS in golden point. They have all trained hard leading up to the national tournament, wanting to improve on last year’s placings - a very focused and determined team. “These talented young ladies came through the tournament with six wins, 184 points for and only 19 against,” said Adelita Sotutu, the school’s Director of Sport.

In spite of bad weather shortening playing time the Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier men still managed to overcome the challenge offered by the highly rated University Xl with comparative ease. After being invited to bat first by the opposition Howick’s Opening pair of Bill Walsh and Dan Young compiled an opening 122 run partnership on a slow wicket and moist outfield before Walsh was dismissed one run short of his half century. Andrew Morrison joined Young in a second wicket stand yielding 121 runs before Young was bowled by slow left armer Patel for a chanceless 119. After Morrison went shortly after for 58, Brian Barnard and Dale Phillips took the total to 297/3 whereupon Skipper Walsh declared. Apart from a 60 run partnership for the third wicket University failed to handle the strong Howick Pakuranga bowling attack, which included Danru Ferns and Jamie Brown two current Aces, Donovan Grobbelaar, Rudi

Daniel Young walking off after scoring 119. Photo Jim Allnatt

Botadra and Adam Jones and were dismissed in 64 overs for 149. Ferns bowled with real hostility to take 5/30 well supported by Grobbelaar 2/38 and Brown 2/19. Asked to follow on University had to play out 37 overs to save the match and for a while looked like doing it easily but when two wickets fell at 76, University collapsed to be 91/7 with 9 overs to go. However staunch defence saw University see the day out at 102/7. The pace bowlers all chipped in with a wicket each but it was Adam Jones who made the crucial breakthroughs with 3/15 off 12 overs. However the 15 points taken from this match have seen Howick Pakuranga lying second in the table just one point behind Suburbs New Lynn.

Oh my Reindeer! Air NZ makes Christmas great again

A

ir New Zealand’s new Christmas video sees the world’s naughtiest children unite in a bid to get back in Santa’s good books, after the Big Man accidently leaks his official “naughty list”. Released last week, ‘The Nicest Christmas Ever’ shows Air New Zealand flying to the rascals’ rescue, assembling an International Naughty Kids Summit to tackle the threat of empty stockings. Knowing that Santa is always watching, the delegation of little darlings pledges better behavior – but when talks stall with the US representative, it falls to New Zealand to save the season. More than 300 children of Air New Zealand employees auditioned to take part in the clip, with 17 selected to star as extras alongside the airline’s ground and cabin crew. Santa makes an appearance, as well as “Noel” the elf from last year’s Air New Zealand Christmas video.

From December 18-23, 7pm onwards, head to Eastgate Christian Centre for the Christmas Walkthrough. Photos supplied

The video follows Air New Zealand’s ‘A Very Merry Mistake’ from Christmas 2017 which shared Santa’s struggle to decipher the New Zealand accent. Photo supplied Air New Zealand General Manager Global Brand and Content Jodi Williams says the airline has a reputation for poking fun and wanted to inject some Kiwi humour into Christmas celebrations. “From childhood memories of writing to Santa, through to the drama of a festive tech fail, the heartwarming video plays on silly season moments in a very Kiwi way. “Showcasing our people is a hallmark of Air New Zealand’s brand campaigns and it was fantastic to be

able to share the limelight with more of the Air New Zealand family this time.” The video follows Air New Zealand’s ‘A Very Merry Mistake’ from Christmas 2017 which shared Santa’s struggle to decipher the New Zealand accent. This campaign attracted 13 million views and won the Global Content award at the PRWeek Global Awards in London. Air New Zealand’s ‘The Nicest Christmas Ever’ video can be downloaded online or viewed on YouTube.

Police encourage revellers to ‘look after your mates’

P

olice are urging Aucklanders and those visiting our city over the summer period to look after your mates and have plans in place to make sure you and your wider whanau and friends have a safe and pleasant time while enjoying the summer festivities. Police are launching Operation Summer this week, a targeted Police operation across Tamaki Makaurau which will be focusing on key areas of demand

that typically increase over the summer period. Operation Summer identifies trends in offending and hotspot areas over the busy summer season and Police will be proactively deployed to prevent these types of incidents from occurring rather than responding reactively to events at they occur. Inspector Jacqui Whittaker, Auckland City District Prevention Manager, says

the holiday period is a busy time with increased demand on Police, emergency services and our partner agencies across Tamaki Makaurau. “Trends Police see during this period include increases in alcohol harm events, family harm incidents, road crashes, water-related call outs and burglaries,” she says. “Police will be out in force, actively patrolling in hotspot areas over the next two months making sure everyone is safe. “We ask that revellers drink responsibly and we discourage ‘pre-loading’. “We will be enforcing liquor bans and checking licensed premises are complying with the law and not serving intoxicated people. “We also urge people to plan ahead and make sure you know how you are going to get home.” Inspector Whittaker also says it is your responsibility to look after your mates and check they get home safely. Police also advise motorists to factor in breaks when taking long commutes and to drive patiently and to the conditions, with many roads becoming more congested over this time. The festive season also typically sees an increase in tension in some homes as well as family harm incidents. Anyone who witnesses or has information about family harm is asked to contact police. Anyone who doesn’t feel safe should immediately phone 111. Police will also have an increased presence near popular water spots over summer and we encourage everyone at the beach to keep close watch on their mates or family in case they get into trouble. The public can expect an increase in police presence around areas such as Piha and Muriwai, Waiheke, Mission Bay, Orewa, Beachlands and Maraetai. Police urge anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to call 111 immediately.

$5m extra for City Mission

Last week Auckland Mayor Phil Goff announced his Annual Budget 2019 – 2020 proposal to councillors seeking to help Auckland’s most vulnerable with a proposed contribution of $5 million to the City Mission’s HomeGround housing and social services project. The Mayor’s Annual Budget proposal also confirms the largest ever annual capital investment in transport infrastructure of $1.2 billion, continued investment in the water quality improvement programme and protection of Kauri, and holding average general rate rises to 2.5 per cent for the coming year. “This budget is about spades in the ground and cranes in the air. We are using the record levels of funding we’ve secured to deliver the critical infrastructure the city needs,” Goff says. “While focused on addressing the critical infrastructure issues facing our city, we must continue to help our most vulnerable. I am proposing additional funding of $5 million for the City Mission to support their HomeGround Project. “This budget is about delivering on Council’s commitment to transform Auckland into an inclusive, modern, world class city.”

School’s can drive BOXING DAY PRICES a big success

NOW!

B

otany Downs Primary School’s can drive last Wednesday was a roaring success. A vast range of food and toiletry supplies was gathered and donated to the Salvation Army Food bank for Christmas. Once a term the school and PTA arranges a mufti day where it is $1 for mufti and then there’s a bake sale where some of the classes provide baking which is then sold to the students for $1-a-piece. This fundraiser usually raises $1000 - $1500 per term. This term the school ran a can drive instead where students were asked to bring an item or more if they were feeling generous which would then be donated to the Salvation Army Foodbank. Information was provided linking parents to the food bank’s most needed items www.foodbank.org.nz/ collections/most-needed. “Families more than

The students pictured are (left to right) Sonnie Mitchell, Jay Lau, Prisha Verma, Lexi Storey, Liam Jekel, Linaya Karunatillake with principal Mr T (Mr Bruce Trezise) and Salvation Army staff Eteta Petero (left) and Tracey Rota. Photo supplied delivered with most families donating two or three items per child and, in some cases, much, much more,” said the PTA’s Jess Storey. “Everyone was very generous and the Salvation Army food bank is very grateful as their supplies are getting very low.” The Salvation Army estimates the total value of goods donated at more than $4000 (853 cans and many other items).

Currently the Salvation Army is running a Christmas Toy appeal where they are seeking donations of new toys which they will collect and put aside for families who otherwise might not enjoy Christmas like many of us do. ► If anyone would like to donate gifts they can get in touch with Joe at the Salvation Army - joe.iosua@ salvationarmy.org.nz.
