racy Signal is a devoted mother and grandmother. But on January 25 the Howick woman will have to take her 24-year-old daughter and two grandchildren back to Australia where her daughter’s alleged abusive ex-partner is waiting for them. Tracy’s daughter, Taryn, who is a NZ citizen, fled Australia in April this year with her two-year-old to escape what she says has been years of physical and emotional abuse from her ex-partner who also suffers from drug addiction.

Taryn had lived in Australia away from her family with little financial and emotional support until she plucked up the courage to leave. Shortly after arriving in NZ, Taryn found out she was expecting her second child who has recently been born in New Zealand. A few weeks after she arrived she told her ex-partner where she was and he has since applied to have her return their child to Australia under the Hague Convention, an international agreement that covers parental child “abduction”. It

provides a process through which a parent can seek to have their child returned to their home country. Tracy says under The Hague Convention, Taryn has been given until the end of January to return to Queensland without consideration for her safety and well-being and that of the children. Taryn will return to Australia with nowhere to live and no support. They have been given till December 20 to provide proof that they have purchased flights back to the Gold Coast which is expected to cost

more than $2000. If Taryn fails to do so in time, Tracy says she risks having her ex-partner fly to New Zealand and legally take the child back to Australia with him. Tracy says, thankfully, because Taryn’s youngest son who is only two weeks old at the time of print, was born in New Zealand, the Hague Convention cannot be applied to him. Tracy says once her daughter returns to Queensland, even after a custody settlement has been

reached, she might not be allowed to leave the state without the permission of the father. Already the family has spent more than $30,000 on legal fees because legal aid is not given to court cases taking place in another country. Earlier this month Radio NZ reported that, according to lawyers, the convention, which hasn’t been changed since 1980, is being used to re-victimise women who have fled abusive relationships. ➤ Turn to Page 23

By Nick Krause he newspaper industry – like retail – has faced monumental change in recent years with the advance of technology and social media. The way in which audiences – particularly the younger demographic – tap into news will never be the same. Globally, print media companies have had to adjust the way in which they reach out and connect with their communities. We are seeing the bigger, dominant players usher in massive changes to news delivery with a focus more on digital and entertainment. The failure of NZ’s two dominant media giants – both owned offshore – to merge has seen dramatic changes to the landscape already. This was most telling with the redundancies this month of more than a dozen journalists at its suburban mastheads around Auckland. The result, sadly, is an homogenised ‘local’ paper in regions throughout this city which carry no local content, nothing of relevance to the

people who live here. Which is where independently-owned companies like ours come into their own. As locally-owned newspapers, we focus on our coverage areas with a passion, to bring readers hyper-local news – good and bad – from within our tight-knit communities. And we’re not the only community papers like this. There are around 85 at the moment (who like us belong to the NZ Community Newspapers Association), operating around the country on a very personal level. That’s what we do. We focus only

on local content and we’re all thriving in this tricky media environment. This seems to be borne out in a recent research phone company 2degrees commissioned asking more than 2000 Kiwis how they communicate in their communities, where they get their local news from, and what role technology is playing in all of this. The key finding is that 29 per cent of Kiwis said that they find out about what’s going on in their communities by reading the local paper or magazine. This was the

leading response, surpassing social media, Neighbourly and other forms of communication. Surprising? A little, but encouraging that we are the go-to for local news stories – big and small – and events and sports and Nana’s 100th birthday. We like to be there when your school shines and your athletes and scholars excel. We try to keep you informed about your roads and beaches and heritage spots. We knock on council’s door for you too asking some of those annoying questions. As important as our readers of course are our advertiser who also realise this newspaper is the perfect medium to reach their customers (not withstanding difficulties we are struggling to address with the third-party company that delivers our papers). For that, we thank you all so very much. Featuring on Seven Sharp this month was a nice way to convey some of this. If you didn’t see it, here’s the link www.facebook.com/sevensharp/vid-

n Wednesday December 12, dozens of people gathered on Stockade Hill in a Vigil celebrating the life and mourning the loss of British tourist Grace Millane. The vigil was organised to remember Grace and celebrate the birthday she never got to celebrate herself. Grace Millane was on her OE when she was allegedly murdered on the eve of her 22nd birthday. Her body was recovered in the Waitakere Ranges and a man has been charged with her murder. As the sun set the cenotaph lit up with candles and fairy lights. The community paid their respects by laying flowers and photos of Grace along the steps.

Protecting Stockade Hill views priority P

akuranga MP Simeon Brown will investigate whether Howick residents might be able to put a Private Bill before Parliament to protect the “iconic and historic views” from Stockade Hill. “I have been approached by a large number of constituents in the Howick and Pakuranga communities requesting support to protect the iconic views from Stockade Hill and will be looking into whether Parliament could provide an avenue to protect these views,” he says. “The Howick Community has been fighting for years to have Stockade Hill recognised for its history and also for the vital role it plays in our community. This fight goes back to the 1990s when Crawford Reserve was bought by Manukau City Council to preserve the view. “Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan then allowed for 12m high developments to be built on the entire perimeter of the hill, potentially blocking views in every direction from the hill.” “After relentless advocacy by the local community, Auckland Council subsequently supported Plan Change 3 which reduced maximum allowable building heights looking towards the sea by a small amount. These changes are too little, too late, and do not adequately protect the amenity

that this hill provides to the community with the view shaft approved by Plan Change 3 only providing 137 degree views based from 1.5m above the ground, only at the very top of the hill. Whether it is Anzac day, Armistice Day, Midnight Madness or a host of other community events, Stockade Hill is a place where the community comes together,” he says. “It is a precious part of the Howick community which must be preserved. “I will be looking at the potential for the community to take a Private Bill to Parliament to ensure that these views are protected for generations to come.” “The threshold to take a Private Bill to Parliament is very high, and I will be seeking advice as to whether this is possible.” “I am also concerned about the fact that Housing New Zealand continues to get involved in this issue. It raises questions about their intention to buy land around Stockade Hill and develop multi-level state-housing in the area. We have enough State Houses in Howick. We don’t need more. “The community has been fighting this issue for many years with their own money, I look forward to working closely with them to lend a voice to their efforts.”

Wait...is this game playing you? Mission Heights Junior College young filmmakers Farhaan Muhammed, Andrew Ma and Raiyan Khan have won the Auckland Council Film-maker award for their short film Gaming Addiction in this year’s Outlook for Someday New Zealand Challenge. Competing against 40 films shortlisted, (five of which came from Mission Heights Junior College student teams), Gaming Addiction addresses the question: What happens when you get so involved that the game is playing you? As young people, they added their voices to awareness of

mental health through this film. The challenge was to make a short film (up to five minutes) about sustainability, to help grow a generating of sustainability storytellers. Students from ages seven to 24 were allowed to interpret sustainability the way they wanted to. A panel of 12 judges from media, government and business agencies judged the best from 133 entries. During their acceptance speech, the winning team spoke of their love for technology and the desire to create awareness of mental

wellbeing for a past-time, they all enjoy. “Winning is amazing. We are often in turmoil with balancing the demands of a technological world.... and gaming addiction is one issue confronting many of us today,” they said. They quoted Barack Obama saying: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We’re the change we seek.” They said embracing the MHJC motto: Kia Mana Ake – Growing Greatness, allowed them, to achieve greatness with their film.

ANNIVERSARY of ammunition from the Howick Armed Police Force who were mostly Maori constables. It was illegal for Europeans to sell rifles and ammunition to Maori who generally had old rifles and doublebarrelled shotguns. They needed ammunition for hunting purposes which was sparingly issued. Some Maori made their own gunpowder, or smuggled it from “friendly pakeha” or bought it from whaling ships offshore. The Howick Fencibles were kept on duty for 12-to-14 hours overnight. Wives took meals to the men. Those on Stockade Hill were especially cold and miserable. At Waipapa Beach in Auckland, angry warriors were in a state of excitement, not to destroy the pakeha town but to catch the Maori policeman for a traditional Maori punishment. The officials demanded that all arms be given up and leave; comply or be fired upon! But the tide was going out leaving the canoes high and dry. The crestfallen “invaders” hauled their heavy canoes over the mudflats to the sea. Ngai Tai chief Tara Te Irirangi of Maraetai with other chiefs met Governor Sir George Grey to express their regret over the incident. He gave the Governor a precious greenstone mere [which is now in Auckland Museum] with other taonga. In return the Governor gave the chiefs tobacco, blankets and food and they all returned home in peace. The Maori shirt-stealer Ngawiki, the cause of the incident, was sentenced to three months imprisonment. When he was released, he was called Toru-Marama or ”Threemonths”. This incident was a favourite topic of pub-talk for Fencibles for many years. ■ Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

n April 14th 1851, a Thames Maori called Ngawiki was arrested by a Maori policeman who was with a pakeha policeman, after Ngawiki had stolen a shirt from a shop in Shortland Street, Auckland. But during the scuffle that followed, Te Hoera, a Maori chief of Ngati Paoa of Waiheke was hit on the head by the Maori policeman’s baton. Hitting a Maori chief on the head violated Maori protocols. On the 17th April Ngati Paoa had gathered support from Ngati Whanaunga and Ngai Tai iwi as they landed at Waipapa Beach [at the end of Stanley Street of today] with 250 to 300 armed warriors on six large war canoes and 25 smaller canoes to seek utu or revenge on the Maori policeman. Some pakeha feared this could be a major Maori invasion of Auckland. Three companies of the 58th Regiment with four field artillery cannons and the warship HMS Fry anchored off-shore moved closer and aimed cannons on those on the beach. The Onehunga Fencibles armed with fixed bayonets marched to Auckland and took up positions near today’s High Court on Constitution Hill. The Otahuhu Fencibles guarded the Otahuhu portage, while the Panmure Fencibles watched the Tamaki River punt for any other Maori warriors. The Howick Fencibles heard the bugle call to arms and paraded in Picton Street soon after the mounted messenger arrived from military officers in Auckland. Captain Alexander MacDonald sent one detachment to the top of Stockade Hill, another detachment was sent to Minerva Terrace. Howick was treeless at that time with good views over the country side. Another detachment scout party went to the Mangemangeroa with strict instructions “to disarm all Maori they encountered”. The Howick Fencibles saw no unfriendly Maori. The Fencibles all had musket rifles but were never given ammunition as they might use it to shoot birds for food. Captain MacDonald borrowed some rounds

Brit & Euro Classic Car Show growing P

lans are well advanced for the fourth annual Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show to be held on Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday March 3. Committee chairman, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, commented to the Times, one of the key sponsors, “We’ve had excellent support from East Auckland these past three events. For 2019 we are planning for 1000 classic cars and motorcycles, and a big crowd as the event is free to the public.” Already 604 cars are confirmed with 10 weeks to go. The event is now established as one of the largest free community events in East Auckland with crowds of more than 10,000 people expected. Dr Waugh further adds, “So many local community groups are involved, and with last year about 130 volunteers. “The Howick Historical Village receives all donations toward their valuable work and the village’s location makes for a special ambience with all the classic transport in the park. “I am sure that people in East Auckland who are restoring or fixing their older cars or motorcycles will have our car show

Unwrapping Christmas: What’s with the baby?

H

uman babies are uniquely helpless creatures. Other species show much greater robustness in the early stages of life. Sea turtles find themselves on the journey of their lives as they scamper across the sand towards the ocean just moments after hatching. When a baby giraffe is born, it drops up to 6 feet to the ground and lands on its head and is able to haul itself upright and walk within hours of birth. Yet a human child’s first steps are considered a milestone to celebrate around a year later. Actually, if you’re sitting up at six months, you’re doing well. Which only underlines the question: what’s with the baby and Christmas? It’s hard to imagine a worse idea than God’s plan to enter human history as a baby. Defenceless. Vulnerable. Completely at the mercy of his creation…us. Yet, this is exactly what we celebrate at Christmas: the eternal Creator of the Universe who became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood. This moment of vulnerability is much more significant for humanity than the familiar, maybe overly sentimental, renderings of baby Jesus, meek and mild. Jesus was born into a hostile environment to a low caste family

At Christmas, we see what love looks like: a baby laid in a manger. Photo osv.com in a country that was under Roman occupation. He survived an early assassination attempt by the Roman client King of Judea, Herod, while still an infant. His family became political refugees fleeing across the border to Egypt. God put himself in harm’s way when he reached out to us in a flesh and blood way. He did this so we could know what He, God, is like. It turns out God is not standing at a distance offering judgment without compassion. He’s up close and personal, living the blood, sweat and tears of authentic human existence. It turns out God is not beyond our human pain and brokenness, but sharing it. It turns out that God is so utterly committed to humanity that he will act dangerously to connect with us. At Christmas, God shows us he has

‘skin in the game’. God who says He is love proves it. Lives it. And ultimately dies for it. The echo of Easter and Jesus’ humiliating execution on a Roman cross is not far from the cradle. Because God put himself in harm’s way for us. Jesus, the man, showed us what a fully realised human life can look like. His teachings continue to resonate thousands of years later. His sacrificial death has inspired generations. His resurrection split history in two. Yet, at Christmas, we see what love looks like: a baby laid in a manger. At Christmas, God became what He is not, in order that we might become who we were created to be. May we see God’s love reflected to us this Christmas as we gaze once more on the baby Jesus, asleep on the hay. A blessed Christmas to you. • The East Auckland Ministers’ Association comprises over 65 churches in the Howick Ward area and would be glad to welcome you to a Christmas service this year. Come unwrap Christmas for yourself – it’ll be worth the effort. Rev Brett Jones Pastor cession community and exec member East Auckland Ministers Association

his slice tastes even better than it looks — and in my humble opinion, it looks freakin’ amazing! Don’t be fooled into thinking this is one of those Christmassy larks full of glacé cherries and candied peel. No, what we have here are deliciously chewy, tangy cranberries, and crunchy macadamia and pistachio nuts with an incredible creamy white chocolate and cream cheese icing. I’ve ?nished it off with freeze-dried mandarins which are delicious if you can ?nd them (in most supermarkets and specialty food stores). This slice makes a delightful homemade Christmas gift — or just keep it in the fridge to enjoy with a cuppa. Preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake. Line a slice tin (mine was 24cm square) with baking paper. Place the butter, sugar, vanilla and lemon zest in a medium saucepan over a low heat and stir until melted. When just melted, remove from the heat and cool for a few minutes. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and stir to combine evenly. Add the egg to the butter mixture and whisk to combine. Add the chocolate, cranberries, oats and nuts, and stir. Sift the ?our mixture in and stir to combine evenly. Scrape into the prepared tin and press out into an even layer with clean damp ?ngers (or lay a sheet of cling wrap on top and press out on top of that). Bake in the oven for about 18 minutes or until turning golden. Cool in the tin. To make the icing, break the chocolate into pieces and add to a heatproof bowl with the butter. Fit over a saucepan of gently simmering water (don’t let the water touch the bowl). Heat, stirring every now and then, until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat. (If the chocolate seizes and goes grainy, try stirring in 2 teaspoons rice bran oil.) Beat the cream cheese in a smallish bowl until smooth. Sift in the icing sugar, add the lemon juice and beat until smooth. Add a spoonful of melted chocolate, beat to combine, then repeat until all is combined. Spread on the cooled slice, sprinkle with the extra nuts and cranberries, and the freeze-dried mandarin (if using). Refrigerate for an hour to set, then slice with a hot knife. ► Recipe extracted from Scrumptious by Chelsea Winter, published by Random House, RRP: $55. Photography by Tam West.

Hundreds of Christmas boxes ready to go By Farida Master

T

here will be hundreds of happy hands packing in Christmas boxes and delivering them to families who deserve some Christmas cheer. Around 750 high quality food boxes, valued at $150 each, will be packed with Christmas ham, chicken, canned food and fresh produce. Steve Green, lead pastor of Elim Christian Centre, Botany, says that his year they have raised around $110,000 that will enable them to fund the Christmas boxes. “All the funds are raised by the people at the Elim Christian Centre,” he says. “A lot of people organise fundraisers, some of the proceeds come through donations and there are some sponsorships from people and companies.” Volunteers will start opening up the flattened cardboard cartons on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday a conveyor belt is set up

at the school gymnasium, where hundreds of families come along with their children and friends to pack the boxes. People from the church will deliver the Christmas boxes on the same day; they will knock on doors and gift them to the people who have been nominated. The police have also partnered with Elim Christian Centre to deliver boxes. “Anyone can nominate names. A couple of hundred names are also nominated by the police and they partake in the activity of delivering the Christmas boxes as well. Stephany Campbell is the project coordinator and there is a team of volunteers who orchestrate it beautifully.” Steve says that the boxes are gifted not only to people who are struggling to make ends meet but also to those who have had a major upheaval in their lives. “We’ve been doing this for the last 10 years and it is just amazing. This year too it will bring so much hope and joy on Christmas,” he says.

All Saints’ Christmas lunch on Jesus brings cheer

B

etween paying bills and general household expenses, Christmas time can be difficult for some families. One generous parishioner from All Saints Church in Howick started an initiative in 2015 that helps make Christmas special for these families in need. The Christmas Lunch on Jesus initiative will provide families with

Christmas boxes containing meat, vegetables, drinks and other goodies – all the things that make an enjoyable Christmas lunch. The aim this year is to put together 125 Christmas boxes to gift to low income families who might struggle to put food on the table this Christmas. The names of these families have been supplied to the church by various agencies and

charitable organisations.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can buy a box outright for $70 or you can donate any amount towards the cost of a box. No amount is too big or too small! Donations can be delivered directly to All Saints Church, Howick office or to the Howick parish bank account: 02 0168

You can also help pack the boxes at the All Saints Community Centre in Howick from 1pm on December 23. Pubs reward sober drivers Some of our favourite local bars are stepping up to reward sober drivers this summer. Basalt Bar, Goode Brothers Botany, Doolan Brothers Botany and the Brook Bar and Eatery are all taking part in Coca-Cola’s Designated Driver programme this festive season. Over summer they will be supplying designated drivers with up to three free non-alcoholic beverages to reward them for volunteering to sober drive so their mates get home safely. “Summer is one of the busiest times of the year for us and we love seeing our customers having a good time,” says Wendy Lawrence, Business Leader at Goode Brothers Botany. “We are big supporters of the Coke Designated Driver programme because it encourages people to be safe on the roads but also reminds them they can still get out and have fun with their mates even if they are the sober driver. “These guys are doing an important job and should be rewarded.” The Coca-Cola Designated Driver programme was launched in 2016 and has been gaining momentum year-on-year. A full list of bars can be found at www. coke.co.nz/driver.

The return of Miss Howick Carnival Queen at Santa Parade I

t was almost 35 years ago that beauty pageant operator Val Lott first held the Miss Howick Carnival Queen where Bo Burns, this year’s organiser of the Howick Santa Parade, took to the stage. Bo placed second in her section and was also one of three little 10-year-old girls to be mascots in the First Miss Howick. “It was Bo’s fond memories of these days that inspired her to bring Amalia Leece, Kenzy Colebrook and Lara back Miss Howick Carnival Queen. Times photos Wayne Martin Lowe. So she contacted me and the rest is history,” says Val, who organised the Miss Howick Carnival Queen at this year’s Howick Santa Parade. “I absolutely loved coordinating it again this year,” says Val. “My dear friend and choreographer for Miss Howick, Sarah Melville-Smith stepped up to help me. Sarah was Miss Howick 1993 and

has coordinated all my shows ever since, including Miss Auckland and Miss Universe New Zealand. “Kylie Anderson, another former Miss Howick winner, also helped coach this year’s older girls in Miss Howick Carnival Queen,” says Val, who used to run confidence and modelling classes for children from the ages 6-12 years prior to hosting Miss Howick. “And at the end of the year they all entered Howick Carnival Queen,” she says. “I always had three sections six to eight years, nine to 10 years and 11-12 years. This year with no Miss Howick for the older girls, I introduced a section 13-16 years. “Seeing how much the children loved this year’s show, I would like to re-commence the classes for next

year. If I think I have the energy of course.”

5-6 years:

■■ First place – Amalia Leece (5yrs) ■■ Second place – Kenzey Colebrook (6yrs) ■■ Third place – Lara Lowe (6yrs)

7-9 years

■■ First place – Jade O’Connor (8yrs) ■■ Second place – Enrica Odevilas (8yrs) ■■ Third place – Lily Keenan (7yrs)

Lifeguards shine in Aussie

L

ifeguards and siblings Taylor and Hogan Shrimpton have come back from the Lifesaving World Championships in Australia with numerous podium finishes. Taylor, 23, and brother Hogan, 25, have been volunteer lifeguards at Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service in Port Waikato for the past eight years. Hogan is an electrician and Taylor is working as a civil engineer in Manukau. They went to Point View Primary and then Sancta Maria College. They competed at the Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide, from November 29 to December 1. Taylor was selected as part of the NZ Women’s IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) team and Hogan in the NZ Men’s IRB team. IRB racing is a series of simulated IRB rescue scenarios with slight variations. The NZ women’s team results were:

■ 2nd Tube Rescue ■ 2nd Mass Rescue ■ 1st Single Rescue The NZ men’s team results were:

■ 1st Tube Rescue ■ 1st Mass Rescue ■ 2nd Single Rescue

Both teams combined for the Teams race:

■ 1st Teams Rescue

Overall National points:

■ 1st New Zealand ■ 2nd Australia ■ 3rd Great Britain

Following the international competition there was an interclub competition where the brother-sister duo represented Sunset Beach. Her team won the mass rescue race and the single rescue race and came forth in the tube rescue race and teams race in the women’s division. “This was our first time competing at the Lifesaving World Champs so we did not know what to expect,” said Taylor. “To come away with the results we did is absolutely incredible. It was an awesome feeling to have all our training and hard work rewarded. “We had an amazing network of support and we are glad we made them proud. We hope that our efforts encourage others to develop and recognise the skills of lifeguards as our sport is all about improving our rescue capabilities and keeping everyone safe at the beach.”

Parker skating on thin ice Having knocked out American Mexican Alexander Flores in Christchurch on Saturday night, former WBO world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker was lucky not to have been disqualified. Three punches below the belt hurt Flores before Parker delivered the coup de grace in the third round with a vicious barrage that earned the KO. Looking bigger and stronger, he had boxed smart, leading with a sharp left jab and scoring with a powerful right cross and some sharp rips to the body. In was a big improvement on his listless London points loss to Dillian Whyte although Flores lacked Whyte’s mongrel aggressiveness. However coach Kevin Barry’s high risk strategy encouraging Parker to hit sparring partners in the groin could backfire with a disqualification when fighting abroad. It’s akin to skating on thin ice and contravenes the Marquis of Queensbury rules that encourages a civilised aspect to what many consider a brutal but fascinating sport. However working at increasing Parker’s strength and stamina is necessary if he is to be competitive against the big brutes that include Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury and Whyte.

Meanwhile popular former Warriors and Kiwis wing Manu Vatuvei looks an exciting boxing prospect after having KOd Dave ‘ The Brown Butterbean’ Letele in 28 seconds in his pro debut against an opponent having his 20th. At 32, Vatuvei may not be the force he once was on the rugby league field but there was enormous power in the right uppercut he delivered to the hapless Letele’s jaw in the ring. Unlike most novices he punches correctly and with impressive timing, suggesting he could be a major drawcard with fans who have grown to love his self-deprecating nature. We have yet to see the defensive skills he will need against better fighters than Letele who, however, is no patsie. Meanwhile he is wise to insist he should make haste slowly. There is talk about matching Vatuvei against Cronulla Shark, Paul Gallen, aged 37. But I’d prefer to see the more experienced Sonny Bill Williams have first crack at the tough Aussie. Meanwhile Steve Hansen’s announcement that he would retire as head coach of the All Blacks after the 2019 World Cup came as no surprise. Nor that he claimed his assistant Ian Foster would make a good successor. Foster has obviously learned a lot since his unsuccessful tenure as Chiefs coach before Dave

Agnew’s Angle

Rennie took them to two Super Rugby titles. His advantage is he has knowledge of the current crop of players with whom he has a mutual trust. Unfortunately champion Ireland coach Joe Schmidt won’t be a candidate for the job despite retiring from his current one after the World Cup. However there are plenty of other outstanding prospects, among them Rennie, Warren Gatland, Vern Cotter, Jamie Joseph, Tony Brown, Chris Boyd and Scott Robertson who has lead the Crusaders to Super Rugby glory in his two years in the job. While Fred Allen was unbeaten in his tenure as coach of 14 tests, I agree with those critics who claim Hansen to be the greatest in a harder international environment. I also think he learned a lot from Graham Henry after both served tough international apprenticeships with Wales. But he has become his own man and one always ready to acknowledge the contributions of his assistants. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
