King tides return Flood waters again crept across Maraetai Drive on Thursday (February 1) due again to the king tides. Times photographer Wayne Martin shot this image. While not nearly as disastrous as the flooding which hit the same spot in a major storm just weeks beforehand (January 5 and 6), residents and store owners were still understandably very anxious. Auckland Transport reported a short section of The Parade (between Devon Rd & Hattaway Ave) in Bucklands Beach had to be closed due to tidal flooding.

Asbestos contaminated dwelling to be daycare her concerns for the building of an early childhood education centre at the Moore Street property in Howick, Liz says. “I had to do my own investigating to find out that the new owner planned to pull the house down and build a day care centre. “Renovations started before I had a chance to object,” she says. “Now, not only am I unhappy with living next door to a busy day care centre, but I don’t think turning an asbestos-ridden property into a daycare is the right thing to do.”

Liz says she first became suspicious of the development when the owner of the property wouldn’t tell her why the house was being demolished. “He repeatedly told me he was not the owner of the property which of course was a lie.” Liz contacted council herself to find out the plans for developing the property. Despite her objections, Liz was told that the development was deemed “not notified” because it was not believed to have any adverse effects on the residents or

environment. Liz says it was white powder coming from the demolition site that raised alarm bells for asbestos. “I contacted [Wordsafe NZ] and, sure enough, after an inspection, the house was found to be contaminated,” she says. Liz says the whole process for developing the day care has been unacceptable and she thinks Moore Street residents should have been kept in the loop. She now fears she may have been breathing in asbestos for weeks before the contamination

was confirmed. Steve Pearce, Auckland Council manager regulatory compliance says the property owner was found to have followed correct procedure related to asbestos contamination. “An Auckland Council Compliance Officer has inspected the site and found the owner of the property and contractors have followed all the correct protocols, had the property surveyed by approved asbestos testing service and identified areas for removal.” ➤ Turn to Page 3

here are concerns over plans to demolish a Howick residence contaminated with asbestos and build an early childhood education centre in its place. A neighbour Liz is against the daycare centre being built on the busy Howick Street and says it will increase congestion and noise in the area. She says residents were not informed of the development plans and were not given the opportunity to object. Discovering the asbestos contamination has only heightened

his summer holidays were a little different for one local family who travelled halfway across the world and met their sponsor children for the first time. Last December the Ward family travelled to Uganda to spend Christmas with family they had living there. The trip proved life-changing when they were given the opportunity to visit the children whose lives they had been changing through Tearfund’s child sponsorship programme. “I had always wanted my children to be grateful for what they have and realise that they are capable of making a difference in somebody else’s life,” Kristin Ward says. The Ward family had chosen to sponsor children in Uganda, knowing that with family living there as well, they had a real possibility to one day meet the children. “I thought about how meaningful it would be if they could see for themselves the difference they can make,” she says. The mother of three says that when each of her children turned five, they were given the gift of an “African brother” or “African sister”. “Even before I became a parent I had heard about programmes where you can sponsor children whose ages match those of your own children as a way to teach them about how other people live.” So far the family sponsor two chil-

Show celebrates two decades of new Beetle D

on Noble knows almost every Volksvagen ‘new Beetle’ in the Howick area. As he starts firing off a few of the number plates of Beetle’s that regularly grace the roads of east Auckland, there is no doubt he is an unwavering fan of the new Beetle. Replacing an icon isn’t easy, but the new Beetle design did exactly that when it was introduced in 1998 to huge fanfare. It was a bold move that kicked off a retro-niche in the car market and now, 20 years on, is paving the way to the new Beetle design becoming a bona-fide classic. Physically reminiscent of the beloved original VW Beetle, designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s, the new Beetle’s retro-theme captured the hearts of many. The new design sports a more distinctive rounded

shape and is cherished for its unique design and interesting colours. Don Noble and Jane St George-Waugh are just two of many who continue to adore the new Beetle and will be proudly showing off their cars at the Brit & Euro Car Show next month. Jane has a chic 2004 duck egg blue convertible that exudes elegance while Don’s 2005 yellow Beetle grabs the attention of

anyone who catches a glimpse. The sloping headlamps and large round tail lights, and a high rounded roofline are what they love most about the new Beetle design. “They’re also nippy little cars, easy and fun to drive with plenty of oomph,” Don adds. “I think they are well on their way to becoming a classic,” says Jane. “But only time will tell.”

This year the Brit and Euro Car show is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the new Beetle design. Chair of the car show organising committee, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, adds, “I commend Don and Jane displaying their Beetles and encourage many other East Auckland Beetle owners to register their cars via our website by the deadline of February 14. “It will be a real attraction to have a corral of these appealing cars, now 20 years old.” The ‘new Beetle’ cars will join more than 650 cars and motorcycles that will be on display at this free community event. The Brit & Euro car Show will be held at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday March 4 from 10am. ■■ See www.briteurcarshow. nz to register your VW Beetle or any other classic cars in the event.

Asbestos contaminated home to be daycare ➤➤from page 1 Pearce says it is common for asbestos to be concealed behind gib or other structures and surfaces and is often not identified until renovations commence. Notifying neighbours is determined on a case-by-case basis, Pearce says, which in this

case was through signage posted outside the contaminated property. Anna Wallace, Auckland Council manager of premium resource consents says the application for a building consent for the Moore Street site is still being processed.

“Establish ECE Ltd has had a resource consent approved to develop the existing dwelling at 105 Moore St, Howick, into an early childhood centre,” she says. Wallace says several neighbours have provided feedback on the resource consent appli-

Group numbers double in cladding class action A

group of more than 160 homeowners has been confirmed to take a $30-$40 million claim against cladding manufacturer James Hardie. Numbers for the leaky home group who have properties clad in either Harditex or Titan Board more than doubled in the five-month opt-in period granted by the Court of Appeal in late August 2017. The final deadline was midnight January 31. Parker & Associates partner Dan Parker says repair costs are typically upwards of $250,000 per building on average and

it is estimated the claims will together total between $30m to $40m. Thousands of properties were built using Harditex from 1987 until the early 2000s and Titan Board was widely used from 1995. The Howick-Pakuranga area greatly expanded during this time, as many new residential subdivisions were developed. Parker & Associates is aware there are many owners of properties clad in Harditex or Titan Board in the East Auckland region and have had many enquires from property owners

in this area. He says the group is grateful for the attention the case has received in the media, which resulted in fresh enquiries right up until deadline. “We have group members from all over the country though most are from Auckland, Wellington and Tauranga. Before the opt-in period started in September 2017 the number of homeowners in the Harditex group was 65. Another 96 have since joined the claim as well as four new Titan Board building owners. “The committee is very

pleased with the response and the final group size, which provides a strong funding base and the opportunity for a large group to pursue recovery.” He says the next stage is to return to Court to for case management directions and for timetabling of the steps through to a hearing as soon as reasonably possible. The group first brought the product liability claim against James Hardie New Zealand Limited and James Hardie Company Studorp Limited in negligence and for breach in the Fair Trading Act in October 2015.

Daniel NZ’s top speller

A voracious appetite for books has led to a Cockle Bay Primary student being crowned the Top Speller in New Zealand in Year 4. Daniel Revans, 9, was awarded his medal at the ICAS Medal Presentation Ceremony held at the University of Auckland in December. Daniel started reading at the age of two and his mother Sam Revans says he owes his success largely to his love of books. Mrs Revans says they have regularly gone to Howick Library together to borrow books where Daniel is usually up to his maximum borrowing limit of 35 books – often reading three books a day. She says Daniel knows all the librarians and often takes part in the library Dare to Explore holiday programmes too. Congratulations Daniel – what a wonderful achievement!

ancy an ocean cruise? Then climb aboard for Howick Little Theatre’s first production of the year, Cruise Control. Written by David Walliamson and directed by Nathan Hey, Cruise Control follows three bickering couples as they board a cruise ship travelling from London to New York for seven days of marital healing. They board with the hope of escaping their reality, but instead find themselves trapped in the hellish world of designated dinner seating and B-grade cabaret. Hey says the play has moments of both drama and comedy, helped along by an amazing cast including some new blood to the theatre. “There’s so many elements in there – it’s drama, madness and lots of humour with great actors.” He speaks of the unusual set design, which poses a challenge for both acting and directing. “It’s a challenging and exciting set, one that we don’t really use all that often at Howick Little Theatre with a 270 degree sightline. It’s been an awesome experience.”

Hey has directed twice at Howick Little Theatre before, as well as short film, and says audiences can expect a “very highly executed play”. “I pride myself on having a slick and well-rehearsed show. “They [audiences] can expect to be entertained [and] to have a laugh.

“It’s a great cast with a passion for acting [who] have been working very, very hard,” he says. “I wouldn’t have chosen it to direct if I didn’t believe it was really good.” ■ Cruise Control is on at Howick Little Theatre from February 24 – March 17.

Employment law changes will cost jobs

JH12740

A new GP has joined our team at Marina Medical

New Zealand is a country of small and medium-sized businesses, and that’s particularly true here in Auckland. Small and medium-sized businesses drive our economy, and provide most of the job opportunities and incomes for our families. This is true for Pakuranga and for New Zealand. The new Government has just launched the first wave of their employment law reforms. The reforms as proposed will increase risks and costs for small and medium-sized businesses and that can only hurt jobs and slow our region down. The changes proposed include the end of the starting out wage, the removal of 90 day trials for businesses with more than 20 staff (including casual and part timers), big leaps in the minimum wage, reduced employ-

ment flexibility, and 1970s-style standardised wage bargaining. Together these changes will mean fewer jobs for Kiwi workers, increases in the cost of living and fewer competitive businesses. Already we are seeing businesses across the country lose confidence as a result of the policies of this new Government. These reforms are one of the big reasons for that decline. New Zealand has an enviable track record over the last few years for lifting employment and growing wages. For the last two years, an average of more than 10,000 jobs has been created every month, in addition to consistently low unemployment rates and the fact that the proportion of people in work is the third highest in the developed world.

With this in mind, the government needs to explain its reasoning behind such dramatic reforms and ensure hard-working and entrepreneurial Kiwis aren’t left behind in order to pay off Labour’s union backers. Last week National launched a campaign called “Protect NZ Jobs”, to help businesses better understand and fight the government’s proposed employment reforms. You can read more about this campaign at the national.org.nz website. New Zealand’s economy is growing and performing strongly right now – let’s not do anything to upset that. ■ Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

What a difference a few decades make. The NZ Herald ran this advertisement on November 3, 1973 in its real estate section flogging an apparently magnificent and substantial home with views in Howick for what was likely then to be a hefty asking price of $93,000! As a point of comparison, another advert touted a “contemporary home just loaded with appealing features situated in top executive location” in Pakuranga for an asking price of $44,000. The Howick home, according to the agents Howick Real Estate, is the finest home they’d seen in 20 years. “Imagine 2400 sq ft (731 sq m) of living space with every conceivable requirement plus 1000 sq ft (300 sq m) 2-brm unit attached – the whole an

FEBRUARY EDITION

THIS MONTH EastLife news is straight from the horse’s mouth – well, not quite but the geegees are in the spotlight for sure. Read about harness racing breeder Tony Dickinson, the people behind the polo and also a woman who knows her thoroughbreds. Check out the Karaka Million’s 2018 who’s who and see who grooved among the grapes! Timing is perfect for EastLife’s annual look at weddings, our food pages feature recipe goodies from Al Brown and Chelsea Winter and closer to ‘home’ those looking to down size could find a new craze for ‘tiny houses’ might have them covered very nicely indeed.

Left, the remains at a reserve on Cascades Road; right, Elim Christian College Photos supplied without the distinctive palm trees.

Please...stop cutting down our trees Some large trees (probably fir trees) have been removed on the Pakuranga stream just before the bridge on Cascades Road, diagonally across from the golf. Is this a new development? There should be no developments close to the banks of rivers and streams. Trees safeguard against erosion, provide beauty, cooling from their shade and remove carbon dioxide from air. Alas, a week later all the palm trees at Elim Christian College were also cut down making the entrance to a school like an industrial car park. Elim was an oasis in the Sinai where the Israelites camped during the exodus and had date palms and wells.

VALENTINES DAY WEDNESDAY 14TH FEBRUARY

There are other schools in Auckland which could also do with some generous greening. St Kentigern College certainly leads the way here and makes the school most attractive. One hopes that new indigenous trees will be planted to replace those lost. Trees are the essence of life, sustain bird life and large trees store carbon. Given the realities of climate change, we should be planting trees and new developments should try to preserve some of the natural vegetation rather than wall to wall clearing such has happened along Thomas Road in Donegal Park.

The contradiction between climate change and economic growth is you cannot have less of one with more of the other. Currently global production and consumption levels are overshooting our planet’s bio capacity by nearly 60 per cent. If we are to halt climate change and global warming, maintaining such levels of growth and consumption are no longer an option. Scientists tell us we are blowing out planetary boundaries at breakneck speed and are in the throes of witnessing the greatest mass extinction of species in 65 million years and the possibility of the planet’s population running out of food to feed itself by 2050 is a real and distinct possibility.

Defibrillator list a must

Congratulations to Howick New World (Brendon), now displaying the defibrillator sign at the store entrance. This is a wonderful service to those who shop at New World and that live at the lower end of Howick and into Botany, especially the large number of older residents living in our Community. Well done to Howick Tennis Club who also has a defibrillator. Where in Howick Village are defibrillators located? On investigation, Howick Information Service does not have a listing on display. They have agreed to look into the matter and hopefully in the future this will be prominent. It would be a great community service if the Howick and Pakuranga Times could perhaps see their way to displaying on either the front or inside front, alternatively back or inside back, of their publications, a small listing of locations/addresses where defibrillators can be found in the areas serviced by their newspapers. Failing this, or better still, in conjunction with the local papers, if the Local Board could suggest a prominent position(s) - that can easily be viewed 24hrs/7days - for displaying a list of locations/addresses where these life-saving devices can be found.

Team Bonnie Farmer!

Bonnie strikes big time at 10 pin Burswood’s Bonnie Farmer, soon to be 84-years-old has been 10 pin bowling for 50 years. She started in 1968 at the original Panmure Ten Pin Bowling Centre, the first of its kind in NZ ending her 50th year at Manukau Super Strike Friday December 8, 2017. Bonnie is also fondly known as Bon and Bonita Bananas (that was before the trade name). Bonnie says there have been many funny times she recalls getting her fingers stuck in her ball and sliding down the lane in fits of laughter. The original Panmure venue eventually closed and Bonnie continued her passion bowling at New Lynn Ten Pin Bowling Centre in Veronica Street where she is a Life Member. From there Bonnie also became a Life Member at Manukau Super Strike where automated machines were first introduced to put the pins on their spot at Manukau Super Strike which was opened by (now Sir) Barry Curtis and Mr Suzuki of Taito Electronics Japan. Bonnie’s passion still is 10 pin bowling. She has been a committee member, treasurer, secretary of leagues and manager of the junior league. She took 42 young people - 8-18 years - to the Australian Championships, was manager of the NZ Female Youth Team under 21s and took them to the Philippine Championships. Bonnie By all means expand the concept of God to include other beliefs but don’t abandon our core belief. Euthanasia has not been well managed in countries like the Netherlands and Belgium. It places stress on the medical profession who have to adjudicate the right to end life and who are left to carry out the deed. This Bill will compromise the elderly by pressurising them to end their lives through guilt – feeling that they have become a burden to society. They nurtured us – it is our duty to care for them in their hour of need. Do not forget that the champion of euthanasia in New Zealand died at the end of 2015 of natural causes. Rather, we should lose our fear of death and allow people who have very

threw herself into Ten Pin Bowling wholeheartedly and has kept scrap books of photos. I asked Bonnie is there any secret to bowling? Bonnie’s said most serious or competing players believe its vital they own their own bowling ball and equipment. Bonnie’s own ball weighs 12lbs. Over her 50 years of ten pin bowling Bonnie has won titles at North Island Championships, club championships, Auckland Championships, Veteran Women’s Double Championships and the Trans Tasman Masters Games. Bonnie has won singles, doubles, team titles but never won a NZ mixed double. Before her stroke, Bonnie was playing twice a week but had to reduce it to once a week. At 80, Bonnie won Panmure Female Bowler of the Year.

poor health and poor life expectancy to die naturally instead of ‘holding’ on to them. God made us, let God take us in her time and when the person comes to peace with death. Medicinal marijuana is a slippery slope. How will we ring fence its use for medicinal purposes only? Many will take advantage. It happened in California. Marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug and causes lung cancer. And we appoint a Commission On Climate Change when Parliament should be debating the move to a carbon-neutral economy now. Waiting for 2050 will be much too late, given the accelerated temperatures evident since 2000.

Specialists

One-stop shopping at Marina Plastic Surgery Questions and answers 1. Why go to Martin Rees for consultation and treatment? Apart from the experience of 30 years, he is readily available if any problems should arise after surgery (which is fortunately rare). He has two of New Zealand’s most experienced Plastic Surgery theatre nurses working with him. They make a very caring and efficient team who like getting the job done properly in a timely manner. They have really good post-op care as well, as this helps to ensure a quality outcome for each patient.

Martin Rees is a very experienced Plastic Surgeon who prides himself on the high quality of his work. He has been practicing Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery for over 30 years with minimum risks and complications for his patients. The convenience factor of doing business at the Marina is hard to over-estimate. Gone are the days of having to travel in to the city or Remuera for medical/surgical specialist care. Here is a ‘one stop shop’ for all those medical/surgical and nonmedical needs as well!

2. Where is Marina Plastic Surgery located? We are still surprised by the number of people who are referred by their GPs to Marina Specialists in the Compass Building at Half Moon Bay Marina who do not know of the fabulous new development of the Marina precinct —- which includes the GP Marina Medical Page 1 practice and Marina Specialists (Marina Plastic Surgery is part of this group of 23 medical and surgical specialists). There is a gym, pharmacy, child care centre, Ray White Real Estate, Guemon Japanese restaurant, Marina hair salon etc., in the Compass Building.

3. What Plastic and Cosmetic and ‘Cosmeceutical’ treatments does Martin Rees provide? Due to the large boating community in the Howick/Pakuranga area there is a high incidence of skin cancer. Some of the residents have been over exposed to the sun for many years! So, we do a lot of skin cancer treatment. We use medical nonsurgical treatments for early skin cancers only resorting to surgery

4. What is the kind of surgery you specialize in? With an extensive training in facial cosmetic surgery, I particularly enjoy the challenge of doing difficult facial surgery such as facelifting, blepharoplasty (eyelid tuck),

rhinoplasty (nose reduction), otoplasty (prominent ear correction). I like to make sure my patients get a ‘natural’ look—- none of those over-tightened windswept looks, so common with ageing American film stars! With advances in local anaesthetic out-patient surgery in the last 10 years, it is now possible to do the bulk of these procedures right here in our modern operating theatre at Marina Specialists under IV sedation with full monitoring, two experienced theatre nurses present and the back-up of a full resuscitation trolley and defibrillator, neither of which we have yet needed to use in the eight years that Marina Specialists Theatre has been working. Another extensive part of my practice is breast augmentation, reduc-

tion and reconstruction done at Remuera Surgical Care and Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre where tummy-tucks, liposuction and fat grafting (for face and breasts) are also done. We also do Facial injectable fillers and ‘Botox’® at Marina Plastic surgery/Marina Specialists. 5. Your opinion on destination plastic surgeries? We keep cosmetic surgery prices sensible and affordable so there’s no need to go to Thailand with all the risks of infection and complications that unfortunately we commonly see and have to ‘fix-up’. We can give you the benefit of quality training and extensive plastic surgical experience to make sure you get the right information and an operation ‘tailor made’ for you! where absolutely necessary. We offer annual full body Specialist skin cancer checks (with under-wear on!) and for the unfortunate few who grow a lot of skin cancers regular ‘prophylactic’ skin checks are done on a three-six monthly basis when needed. Our policy is to treat skin cancers when they are small so the treatment is easier and if surgery is needed it is less extensive with a smaller neater scar… something everybody wants!

For meat lovers, it’s a dream come true but for others, it could be the worst thing imaginable. Meatstock is returning to Auckland’s ASB showgrounds on February 24 and 25 and Howick’s Hotboxed Meatheads will be hoping to carve up the competition in the New Zealand Barbecue Wars event. Brennan Thomas of the Hotboxed Meatheads says the competition will be a first for the team who decided to give it a go and throw their hats into the ring. “We’ve never done it competitively before but it’s one of our favourite pastimes so we’ll see how we go.” The team consists of four locals, two of whom work together along with two friends. They’ll all be hoping to smoke out their 49 rivals in their battle to be crowned the country’s best barbecue team. Members of the community will judge the barbecue wars and all judges attend the Australian Barbecue Alliance (ABA) judges course for free to learn how to assess the best in barbecue for each protein, cut and flavour. Categories include beef – brisket, cheek or beef ribs, lamb – any cut, pork – shoulder or neck, served pulled, chopped or sliced or a combination of any, pork ribs – baby back, spare or St Louis, and chicken – any cut. The two day meat-filled extravaganza features a backdrop of live bands, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment and BBQ inspired food trucks and craft beer. There’ll be no room for misteaks with a prize pool of more than $8000 – including $1000 cash on the line for the Grand Champion.

Coastal flooding impact on future buyers: Crockers T

he Kiwi homebuyers’ penchant for a place by the sea seems to be on the wane. Crockers’ latest market research says overall weather changes and climate change have had an impact on those who are interested in buying coastal properties. Just under a half of respondents (41 per cent) remain uninterested in coastal properties and therefore unlikely to invest in coastal properties. Some 32 per cent claim that climate change has reduced their interest in buying coastal properties, whilst just over a quarter of respondents (27 per cent) are still interested in investing coastal properties despite recent flooding and global warming. Large investors were more likely to have never been interested in coastal properties than small investors, whilst small investors were more likely to have a reduced interest in coastal properties following the flooding.

Coastal flooding property impact This month in Crockers’ latest CPII survey in association with IPSOS, some questions were asked about the impact to

coastal flooding in early January and what impact this had on respondents’ residential properties. As well as this, a question was asked on respondents’ overall attitudes to investing in lowlying coastal properties, given the recent flooding and the influence of global warming on rising tidal levels. Overall, 55 per cent of the respondents were not impacted by the recent floods, 44 per cent did not own any coastal properties and 1 per cent of respondents were affected by the floods.

2017 Review: Sales & Rentals in Main Metros In 2017, median sales prices saw a steady increase at the start of the year, but then stabilised as the year went on. Auckland posted a slight increase in median sale price, while Wellington posted the highest proportional growth in 2017, with median sales prices increasing from $460k in January to $565k in December. The growth in Wellington was experienced by large fluctuations between most months. Dunedin’s median sale price also increased by $80k. In contrast, Christchurch experienced

a steady decline in median sales price, perhaps due to additional stock coming onto the market. Rental prices had mixed movements in 2017. Two-bedroom rental prices in Auckland rose 15 points between January and December 2017, while the 3-bedroom rental price had a more substantial increase of 21 points. Rental prices in Wellington rose 43 points for 2-bedroom properties over 2017 – the largest increase last year, perhaps due to the increasing trend of people moving out of Auckland and into other parts of New Zealand. Dunedin 2-bedroom rental prices increased slightly over 2017 (2 points), while 3-bedroom property prices have remained the same ($375). Christchurch has experienced decreases over the past year. Both 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom rentals dropping by 8 points. Last year the average selling price in New Zealand increased 33 per cent ($132k) since 2013. These increases were driven by shifts in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. Wellington also saw a large growth in sales price, up 32 per cent (128k) on 2013. ➤➤Continued on page 15

www.times.co.nz ➤➤From page 14 Dunedin has experienced growth of 35 per cent ($94k) since 2013, steadily increasing since 2014. Christchurch sales price growth remained stable in 2017 at 1 per cent ($3k) since last year, stabilising after strong growth prior to 2015 during the earthquake rebuild. Since 2013 the city has seen a 21 per cent (82k) rise in selling prices. Rental prices have followed a similar pattern since 2013 – this is shown by the Christchurch curves, which have shown relatively similar trends in response to the rebuild. Auckland rental prices have increased by 22 per cent ($86) for 2-bedroom and 20 per cent ($101) for 3-bedroom dwellings since 2013; this follows a period of strong growth in prices in 2015

and 2016. Wellington rental prices have increased substantially over the past four years. Since 2013, 2-bedroom dwellings have shown an increase of 23 per cent ($73) and 3-bedroom dwellings have shown an increase of 17 per cent ($72). Dunedin has also experienced small increases in the past four years – 14 per cent for 2-bedroom dwellings and 12.5 per cent for 3-bedroom dwellings. Since 2013, Christchurch rental prices have experienced fluctuations– 2-bedroom dwellings decreased by 4 per cent ($14) and 3-bedroom dwellings were down 7 per cent ($29). An estimation of the rental return (yearly rental income divided by house price) indicates that returns across Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin have

weakened slightly in the past year. Auckland’s estimated average rental return has stabilised – likely due to the fact that median sale prices in Auckland have started to stabilise – as rental prices continue to increase. For example, if someone bought in Auckland at the median price of $839k and rented it out for all 52 weeks of the year at $548 per week (we have averaged the median 3-bed and 2-bed rents to get $548), they would bring in 3.4 per cent of their original investment (before expenses). In 2013, they would have enjoyed a 4.2 per cent return. The drop in other parts of New Zealand indicates that median house prices are rising, whilst rents are not keeping up with this increase.

Auckland posted a slight increase in median sale price, while Wellington posted the highest proportional growth in 2017

Hunger for Colour will assist those struggling Paint company Resene and generous New Zealanders will be brightening the homes and lives of thousands this month. The Resene Hunger for Colour fundraiser is back, for its third year helping struggling New Zealanders put food on the table and bring colour to Kiwi homes. The initiative, which runs from 1-28 February, invites people to head to one of 65 Resene ColorShops around the country and swap cans of food for 60-80ml test pots of Resene paint. The cans are then donated to their local Salvation Army food bank. Over the last three years, Kiwis swapped over 110,000 cans of food for paint, with community groups such as Palmy Rocks driving a huge rise in donations last year. The cans were a major boost for Salvation Army foodbanks just at the right time, Salvation Army National Manager of welfare services, Major Pam Waugh says. “This time of year is an extra busy time for us as many families are struggling with the combined effects of Christmas, holidays and back to school costs. Our food parcels provide real relief, allowing some of the household budget to be redirected to target debt and one-off essential costs, including back to school expenses.” In 2017 The Salvation Army provided almost 64,000 food parcels to struggling New Zealanders, Pam says. Resene Marketing Manager Karen Warman says the company first collected cans for The Salvation

Army after the Canterbury earthquakes. Staff and customers loved the idea and the company has been looking for ways to give back ever since, she says. “The campaign has generated fantastic feedback for three years running. People like donating food knowing it was going directly to help someone in need and the test pots are a popular, versatile product which encourages people to come in,” she says. “The response in some communities last year was incredible. More than 3000 cans were donated at Resene’s Palmerston North ColorShop alone, with other stores close behind. “The stores love it, customers love it and we love it.”

Kitchen with a Scandinavian flair

ADVERTORIAL KC13138A

Yukie Guo believes the kitchen is the heart of the house. With that in mind she began renovations on her 1970s Pakuranga Heights home with a new Jag Kitchens design and is delighted with the resulting style and flexibility the space gives. “It’s made a huge change. The previous kitchen was really tiny with hardly any bench space and storage space was minimal too. The fittings were also all in colourful 70s’ style,” says Yukie. Yukie moved from China to settle here with her husband seventeen years ago. Now with two young sons studying at nearby schools, she works locally as a medical receptionist and her husband, Devo Peng is a well-known hairstylist who recently opened his own salon, Studio C.

Yukie Guo (left) delighted in the result of style and flexibility in her spacious kitchen, pictured with Jag Kitchens designer Emma Weeber.

from the previous owners and very clear for me to design around,” Emma says. “We took this closed-in, tiny kitchen and made it feel open and spacious.

Jag Kitchen designer, Emma Weeber, (who describes herself as a ‘Chiwi’ or Kiwi-Chinese) worked closely with Yukie on the plan for the new kitchen. Both young women are very happy with the result, which has a distinct Scandinavian flair using neutral colours and the latest in appliances.

“I love baking – it is my favourite hobby and I now have plenty of bench space to indulge in that. I have been teaching my six-yearold son to bake and that was a really memorable experience as he was so proud of the results. There is heaps of room too for rolling out traditional dumplings,” Yukie adds.

“The original layout was not making full use of the space. Yukie’s needs are very different

“We changed the kitchen so much, but it all worked out under budget! All of my friends

love this kitchen, especially the Mondo corner mechanism.” The bench tops are in engineered stone with melamine cabinets using the new Bestwood colour of Limestone. An on-bench pantry has been worked in around a window in the corner of the kitchen, making use of a previously unused area. The handles on the Blum ‘soft closing’ drawers are new to

New Zealand. They are made in Denmark by Furnipart and have a very sleek look. The new refrigerator is a Samsung with the chic double French door design, while the induction cooktop is from Neff, and the rangehood, wall oven and dishwasher are all by Smeg. Special hexagon tiles were selected for the splashback and add a dash of design interest, while modern LED light fittings

blend well with the European styling. For the floor, planks of wood-look vinyl have been used very effectively. It resembles blond oak and gives the kitchen a light ambience. Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and have their own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a stateof-the-art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.

Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

nate to also watch three NCAA matches at Staples Centre in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. They followed this with an NBA match between the LA Clippers and the Washington Wizards which went down to the wire with the Clippers dropping a three pointer in the dying seconds to win by one point. The Pakuranga College students were also able to do some sightseeing, including a trip to Universal Studios Theme Park and

Alcatraz Island. This was the college’s first venture to the US and one of the objectives was to give the young men the opportunity to experience the sport they love and to be immersed in the American culture that is basketball. It gave the College staff and students alike, the opportunity to build connections and contacts for future ventures. The players were also able to develop their skills by playing against some talented and competitive teams.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 8, 2018 — 23

Sevens magic wows the fans W

hen it comes to World Series sevens magic, Fiji and South Africa provide the skills and thrills that leave opponents grasping thin air and spellbound crowds gasping in wonderment. That was the way it was when Hamilton successfully hosted their first World Series sevens and Fiji emerged sensational 24-17 winners after trailing the speedy South Africans 17-5 at halftime. South Africa have serious talent in the form of the sensational Cecil Afrika, Seabelo Senatla and Kwagga Smith, the latter starring for the Barbarians against the All Blacks at Twickenham late last year. But they had no answer to combat the big, strong-running Fijians’ amazing offloads. For me, the standard of that final compensated for the disappointment of seeing the All Blacks sevens pipped at the posts for third by Aussie skipper James Stannard’s drop goal penalty. I also confess to my failure to accept this is an All Blacks sevens when not one member of the squad is capable of making the All Blacks 15 starters and eight reserves team. However one who might one day is 19-year-old Vilimoni Koroi who has been compared to the legendary Tomasi

Cama, who was quick to spot his talent when Koroi was playing for Feilding High School. Blessed with Fijian genes, the nuggety Koroi has a sharp eye for a gap, good balance and lightning acceleration, the same attributes that have carried Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie so far. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of Koroi, courageous captain Scott Curry, veteran Tim Mikkelson and Joe Webber, crucial tackles were missed and sloppy passes proved costly when it came to the crunch. While bright futures are predicted for Koroi and 18-year-olds Etene NanaiSeturo and Caleb Clarke under new coach Clark Laidlaw, the team lacks the cohesion and individual brilliance possessed by Fiji and South Africa. Still, it is a credit to Scotsman Laidlaw that, with 69 points, they are currently second in the World Series behind South Africa (77), and ahead of Fiji (62) and Australia (60) who also have exciting youngsters in Lachlan Anderson and Maurice Longbottom. Meanwhile, having scored a record 13 international wins in all three forms of cricket, the Black Caps came to a shuddering halt with three successive T20 losses, two against Pakistan and

Agnew’s Angle another against Australia in Sydney. Having scored 117 for nine, it was a pathetic effort by the New Zealand batsmen with Colin de Grandhomme the only one to take the game to the Baggy Caps with an unbeaten 38 off 24 balls. Why on earth he is batting as low as No 7 when he regularly performs ahead of so many rated above him is hard to comprehend. Having recovered from their humiliating Ashes test series loss to Australia to beat them in the ODI series, England have cause to fancy their chances against a New Zealand team that has lost their way, especially when playing abroad. What is especially disturbing is the lack of fortitude shown by some batsmen if openers Colin Munro and Martin Guptill fail to fire in the manner they did earlier in the season. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Four make NZSS netball squad Four local girls have been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools squad for 2018. Three of those named hail from Howick College, the national secondary school champs. Another colleague has been named as a reserve. Netball New Zealand has named a 23-strong squad following the National Development Camp in Cambridge last week, which includes two ANZ Premiership players. Leehava Saverio, Nanise Waqairo and Teuila Sotutu from Howick College have made the squad as has Tayla Earle from St Kentigern College. Howick College’s Iva Livani has been named a reserve. Howick College’s meteoric rise at the New Zealand Secondary School Champs ended in October last year with their first national crown. In what was their first appearance at the national netball event, the school beat Saint Kentigern 33-25 in an

exciting grand final. Meanwhile, NZU21 World Champion Tiana Metuarau and defender Renee Savai’inaea, who will make her ANZ Premiership debut this season, are still eligible for the New Zealand Secondary Schools squad for 2018 and have been named in the group. NZSS coach MaryJane Araroa said a final team would be named after the NZ Age Group Championships in July in the build-up to matches against the Australian Under-17 squad in Canberra in September. “We are excited with what we have seen at the National Development Camp and opted to name a squad at this time to enable us to monitor and track these athletes over the next six months” she said. Araroa said the National Camp provided the panel the opportunity to assess athletes from all over the country. ➤ Turn to Page 23

Fox claims his best placing on Euro tour B

eachlands’ Ryan Fox has recorded his best finish on the European Tour with a third-equal placing at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia. Fox’s final round 66 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club was highlighted by an eagle at his opening hole and three birdies in his last four holes and saw him finish three shots behind the winner Shubhankar Sharma of India, iseekgolf.com reported. Fox told the Times he was very happy with the week. “It’s nice to be in contention on Sunday and finish with my best result so far on the European tour,” he said. On Saturday, Fox moved into a tie for the lead after sinking a 213-yard six-iron for a two on the par-five . “The albatross was pretty special. They are much rarer than holes in one so very cool to have one in a tournament.” Fox’s previous best finish in Europe was a fourth placing at both the Scottish and Irish Opens last year. He earned €135,434 ($231,489) for his week’s work and while his cheques in Scotland, Ireland and France last year were bigger, this is a great start to the 2018 year for him, iseekgolf.com said. Fox began the final round three shots behind the then leading pair of

Dylan Frittelli and Jorge Campillo and although he gave back one of those two shots, he gained at the first when bogeying the second. The balance of his round saw him move through the field into what is a particularly satisfying week for the 31-year-old who is in his second season on the European Tour. Sharma won his second European Tour title just a few weeks after his first at the Joburg Open two months ago and last year finished 9th in this event so he did have the credentials coming into the week but at # 193 in the world he was hardly considered

Parents should note that NCEA students are doing ongoing internal assessments during the term which count for credits in exactly the same way as do end of year exams so these should be taken very seriously, espacially by those students seeking merits and excellences. Will your Child be Exam Ready?

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!” Fees must be paid Fees: in advance Casual $ 50 per hour Five 2-hour lessons: $450 ($45 per hour) Ten 2-hour lessons: $800 ($40 per hour)

She is maintaining Merit for her topic tests and internals so far this year. She feels it is because you gave her a solid foundation last year which has taken her well into this year” “Thank you so much for your wonderful and helpful teaching” - Debra “I just recently got offered a place in Auckland University for all my selected courses. I could not have done it without you” - Miraj “I am sincerely grateful for all the help you have provided me whilst teaching me Mathematics. In such a short span of time I feel so much more confident” - Aakriti “I think he has got a lot out of the sessions with you, it makes a huge difference getting help from someone who actually knows how to teach” - Cody’s Mother

one of the favourites for the event. Nothing was going to stop the 21-year-old today however as he powered his way to a bogey-free round of 62 to come from four shots off the pace for his stunning victory. Spain’s Campillo finished alone in second place while his fellow countryman Pablo Larraza finished in a share of third place with Fox, he too finishing with a rush over the closing few holes for a round of 66. The European Tour now joins forces with the Asian and Australasian Tours for the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth.
