Retirement village lift a ‘danger’ to residents Piece of history ready for record Brit & Euro Classic Car Show By KELLY TEED
Michael Chong in his 1942 Volkswagen Kubelwagen.
Times photo Wayne Martin
There are only two 1942 Volkswagen Kubelwagens in New Zealand. One belongs to movie mogul Sir Peter Jackson. The other, belongs to Northpark’s Michael Chong. The vehicle has been painstakingly restored to its former glory days. It was built during World War II for use by the German military and served during the war. It’s taken priority in Mr Chong’s family garage, and looks as if it’s come straight from the battlefield. It even features a small swastika on its front bumper – a true sign of its time. At 1200cc, it doesn’t go much faster than 70km/h – but with only 50,435 made before production ceased at the end of the war and with fewer than a few hundred remaining in the world today by Mr Chong’s estimate – it’s an interesting piece of history to hold. The Kubelwagen was designed by Ferdinand Porsche under instructions from Adolf Hitler himself. Prototype designs began in the early 1930s, however the design was forced to be adjusted towards a military variant before the Type 1 prototype made it to production due to wartime demands. The original design was eventually produced after the war and has developed into what is now known as the popular Beetle design. The angular body design of the Kubelwagen immediately draws attention. It has a spare tyre on the front, and the engine sits in the back – quite the opposite to today’s car designs. While it’s not a spacious vehicle by today’s standards, it still seats five and Mr Chong’s two sons enjoy taking the odd ride. ➤ Turn to Page 12

esidents of a local retirement village are frustrated as their demands to replace a dangerous elevator fall on deaf ears. The 19-year-old lift at MetlifeCare Pakuranga Village regularly breaks down and elderly residents often find themselves trapped inside. Angela Scott, whose mother moved into the Pakuranga Village eight years ago, says the residents deserve better. “The lift is always being repaired for one reason or another and it’s just not good enough,” she says. “On one occasion that I know of, a 90-year-old lady got stuck and had a panic attack in the lift. “She is an asthmatic and didn’t have her puffer with her as she only went down to check her letter box. She was short of breath when they got to her and needed her puffer.” Scott says while she is pleased the emergency phone in the lift gets answered quickly the elevator lights turn off after a few minutes leaving the occupants in complete darkness. When the lift is out of action, the only other way of getting to and from the upstairs apartments is two flights of stairs. “The stairs are completely exposed to the elements, so the hand rails get slippery when it rains and the steps and landings pool with water which is so dangerous,” Scott says. Scott says her 76-year-old mother is still receiving ongoing treatment for injuries she sustained when she fell down the village stairs in 2012. She says the “final straw” was receiving a distressed call from her mother when she became stuck in the lift once again earlier this year. “It was only around five minutes but that was too long,” Scott says. In the nine days following this incident, the lift broke down four more times. ➤ Turn to Page 11

“I felt like I failed as a dad”

teve Hargreaves has big shoes to fill. His predecessor, Byron Bentley, spent 18 years at the helm of Macleans College before retiring at the end of last year. To follow on from that is “a little bit daunting” says Mr Hargreaves. “Byron’s so widely respected and he’s lead incredibly well for a long period of time. He’s the sort of person the Minister [of Education] would call and seek an opinion from.” While he’s new to the principal’s seat, he’ll be well familiar with the rest of the school — he spent 13 years there as a maths and economics teacher and a period in senior management before taking up the role of principal at Wesley College in 2015. He says it wasn’t easy to leave Wesley, where he felt he had settled in and was making progress. “It’s the kind of school where you really become a part of the place and the kids there are so open and interesting that you just become part of the family...leaving was really hard. “Last week when they

came up to our [Macleans] assembly here and did a powhiri handover, I got quite choked up.” But he’s looking forward to being closer to his family again. “I was driving 40km down the road to Pukekohe every day, I never saw my kids. It’s crazy [to think] I could go three or four days and not see them at all...I’d leave before

they woke up in the morning and get home at bedtime. “I felt like I failed as a dad,” he said. Now he’s back at Macleans, he’s ready to make his mark. “[I’d like to] change the culture of the school a little bit, beyond the focus on high performance. “Everyone knows Macleans for their grades and we just keep producing kids who
deliver at the very highest level academically and we are proud of that but I want to make sure we are producing kids that have the values and attributes that will make them successful in all aspects of their life beyond school,” he says. “Grades are important but what we need is people that are open minded, can communicate, they can adapt,
they’re resilient and I want to make sure we’re focusing on all aspects – that holistic approach.” He’s now spent 20 years in education and it’s hard to imagine this man doing anything else – but he hadn’t always planned on teaching. After graduating from university he worked for Telecom in New Zealand and in the finance department of NBC Television in London before deciding to head to teachers college in his late 20s. “And the rest is history,” he smiles. “It’s the best thing I ever did.” “Schools are awesome places to work. Kids are just... you get so much energy from them and there’s always something interesting happening. “You can come into work on a wet, cold, rainy Tuesday in winter and then the first interaction you have with a student just brightens your day.”

Paddling towards life after surviving cancer By Therese Henkin
C
ancer survivors are being encouraged to pick up a paddle and get out on the water in a new initiative. PaddleOn, a four week stand up paddle-boarding (SUP) programme, launched at Bucklands Beach last week with the aim of helping cancer survivors get back on track. The programme, delivered by certified Pinc & Steel physiotherapist Catherine Noventa, works to improve confidence, balance, strength, posture, flexibility and fitness in those who have completed cancer treatment. “There’s so much research out there now about cancer survivorship and people surviving longer and having fewer recurrences if they exercise,” Noventa says. “PaddleOn is a great way for cancer survivors to ease back into exercise and gain all the benefits of learning something new, having a laugh and meeting others who have experienced something similar to them.” Noventa, from Howick House Physio, has been working with cancer patients for 25 years and says often survivors suffer from ongoing physical and psychological problems after treatment. “There is this tendency among some survivors to believe that if

they are in remission that they are really lucky and they should just get on with it and not complain,” she says. “But often they suffer for years following their treatment with serious fatigue, muscle problems and painful scarring - just a small number of challenges they face.” She’s spent the past two years rallying to get PaddleOn offered in east Auckland and hopes it will encourage cancer survivors to reach out and take advantage of rehabilitation available to them. “It’s about survivorship, and not just about surviving, but about thriving after cancer.” Noventa will be taking the class alongside certified SUP instructor Julie O’Meagher.
“The PaddleOn programme teaches participants all the components of stand up paddle boarding in an environment that is safe and fun, with a small

group of like-minded individuals,” O’Meagher says. “I want to see more people learning about the benefits of exercise for cancer survivors and more people embracing the opportunities to improve their quality of life after cancer.” The programme is available to anyone who has undergone cancer treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and or radiotherapy in the last six years. Sessions are subsidised by Pinc & Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust and cost $40 for eight sessions. Participants must undergo a screening process prior to beginning the course to ensure they have the required fitness level. ■■ To register go to www.pincandsteel.com.

$78m development for Botany B
otany Town Centre is to undergo a multimillion development which will begin this month with a completion date set for May 2019. AMP Capital on Friday announced a $78 million development and expansion project at Botany Town Centre, one of Auckland’s largest regional shopping centres. The development will include the introduction of international and national retailers; an additional mix of speciality retailers, a comprehensive refurbishment to Garden Lane, a refresh of the fresh food precinct adjoining the New World supermarket and an expansion of the alfresco dining offer. This is in addition to the existing entertainment precinct which includes HOYTS undertaking a major refurbishment, with the upgrade of more than 1000 powered recliner cinema seats, updates to the HOYTS LUX premium cinema experience and more. AMP Capital portfolio manager Nick Cobham said: “After considered preparation and planning, we are thrilled to announce a significant retail, leisure and entertainment expansion in one of Auckland’s fastest-growing and most populous areas. “Botany Town Centre has always been the hub of the Botany community and will remain close to its roots in both design and spirit – just in a bigger, better and even more inviting format.” The centre’s historical success, the growth of the surrounding suburbs and the demand for ever more sophisticated, globally-focused and interesting retail, food and entertainment offerings mean investing in the centre is a must, Cobham said. “Investors certainly see the value in further investment to ensure Botany continues to meet the shopping and entertainment demands of a thriving local population.” Botany Town Centre opened in 2001 and quickly became an integral part of the east Auckland community. Currently Auckland’s secondlargest shopping centre by lettable area, Cobham said the vision is to continue to be New Zealand’s pre-eminent town centre that incorporates quality retail, lifestyle and leisure offers, and an excellent investment opportunity for our investors. The development is being undertaken by AMP
Development details:

The 300-strong team manages a portfolio of 30 shopping centres in Australia and New Zealand including Botany Town Centre and Manukau Supa Centa in Auckland, Bayfair Shopping Centre in Tauranga, and The Palms in Christchurch. AMP Capital shopping centres development manager Paul Hudson said: “The investment in this development represents
a significant measure of confidence in the centre. he timing was perfect. On the day of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, 19 school ambassadors at Farm Cove Intermediate were ceremoniously honoured for their support with pastoral care provided to students from South Korea. It was a celebration of leaders as role models. School ambassadors and councillors were acknowledged for reaching out to the South Korean students with a badge and colourful lei representing different nationalities. Encouraging values of cultural intelligence, the school ambassadors at Farm Cove Intermediate work though out the year supporting international and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. Farm Cove Intermediate has around 18 Korean students visiting from Cheongju Girls High School and Jusung Middle School for three weeks. The school also has a handful of Korean home stay students on the school roll. Some of the young leaders who take pride in their role and wear their badge like an Olympic gold, accompanied the visiting Korean students for a tour of

Year 8 student Hazel Tautua who visited South Korea on a school trip last year, says that she enjoys making new friends and getting to know the Korean way of life “though they drive on the other side of the road and their food is quite different,” she says. The exchange that helps develop globally engaged citizens of tomorrow, has 12-yearold Jaedon Burgess saying he keeps a close eye on the Korean students. “We are there to support them and help them find

A few weeks ago, my Members Bill was drawn from the ballot to go before the House of Representatives. This Bill is called the Psychoactive Substances (Increasing Penalty for Supply and Distribution) Amendment Bill and is designed to increase the penalties for those found guilty of supplying these harmful drugs. We need to crack down on the supply of psychoactive substances and ensure that those supplying them are sentenced appropriately, taking into account the awful harm they are causing in the community. There have been a number of deaths attributed to the use of these
I launched a petition to sit alongside my Bill, which asks that Parliament open a select committee inquiry to look into the care provided to those who are addicted to these drugs and make recommendations about what more we can do to help. These drugs are affecting communities and families across New Zealand, so I encourage anyone who is concerned to sign this petition so that we can crack down on the suppliers of these drugs, and support those who are suffering from them. drugs, and the current maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment does not fit the crime. My Bill will increase the penalties associated with the already-illegal distribution of psychoactive drugs, pushing the maximum jail term from two years to eight years. This would bring it in line with the penalties for the supply of Class C drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, and my hope is that this will serve as a further deterrent to those who are irresponsibly providing them. We also need to promote better ways of helping those who are suffering and provide support to their families. Last week

It adds to the richness and vibrancy of our school.” Having lived a year in Japan, she brings empathy to the role that is all about sharing and caring. Korean student Joseph Lee says that the point of difference between his school and the Farm Cove Intermediate is that “this school is not strict – and much more relaxed.”

At a special Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony, volunteers and guests reflected on the relief work that the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation has undertaken in some 19 countries after natural disasters strike
SUNDAY OMANA MARCH 4 REGIONAL PARK T FIRST RACE 10AM
By Farida Master here have been times when they have reached a disaster zone before emergency services arrive. The Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation New Zealand, located at East Tamaki, is known to help victims of natural disasters with food, supplies, much-needed money packets and most of all with love and compassion. When the earth parts and swallows everything leaving people surrounded by death and destruction or cities are washed away or towns burnt to ashes, volunteers of the Tzu Chi Foundation all over the world rush to help and support the victims no matter which corner of the world they are located in. There was not a single dry eye in the house while people watched films that documented the work the foundation does. Stories of human spirit, regardless of race, religion or country, touched everyone’s heart. The blessing ceremony stressed how important it is to “respect, love and protect mother earth” and that each and every person has the capacity to help make a difference. Auckland Councillor Sharon Stewart, who has worked closely with the foundation, said the responsibility rests on each one of us to protect our environment and not just rely on
HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR COMMUNITY. Loneliness is now understood to be a major health issue affecting older people, both physically and psychologically. Auckland Council. The blessing ceremony also had a distressed tourist couple who spoke about how grateful they are for all the support they got from the foundation when their son developed a sudden ailment on their visit to Waitomo Caves and couldn’t breathe. And while their son is still hospitalised, they promised to become volunteers of the organisation that has helped them at the worst time of their lives.
To the rescue
More recently, the minute Patricia Duke a volunteer at the Tzu Chi Foundation heard about a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Taiwan on February 6. She called her family and asked them to donate $100,000 toward relief work. “I was heading home for Chinese New Year but when I heard of the earthquake. I called my parents and asked them to donate some money. How else can we help those who have lost everything,” she told the Times. “Five buildings collapsed and 14 died with around 400 people injured. The charity has a hospital and doctors and nurses working to help those injured by natural disasters,” she said.

Village lift a danger to elderly residents ➤➤From page 1 Scott says in the most recent lift breakdown during the thunderstorm on February 10, the repairman from Otis Elevator Company deemed the lift too dangerous to fix at the time due to water going down the lift shaft. “[Metlifecare] pour so much money into the new villages, which have brand new indoor elevators, while this lift is too dangerous to even repair when it’s raining,” Scott says. Scott was told by WorkSafe NZ that the Pakuranga village is deemed independent living quarters meaning residents should be able to get themselves around without assistance from a caregiver. According to WorkSafe, the lift can’t be labelled as mandatory operational access when the stairs are a viable alternative for what’s classified as independent residents. WorkSafe says it will oversee the way Metlifecare manage the risk of slips and falls. It has been suggested that residents who struggle with the stairs move to a ground floor apartment, but Scott says this is an expensive venture. “They will get back what they put into the unit less 30 per cent, then they have to purchase the ground floor unit at current value,” Scott says. “My mum purchased hers eight years ago for $270,000. They are now selling for around $500,000.” Richard Callander, general manager operations for Metlifecare Pakuranga, says the safety and well-being of all residents and staff is a top priority. “We have undertaken an

We understand the issues are within the normal range expected.” He says the village has recently appointed an independent lift consultant to review the lift and provide a recommendation on its operation. “The seven independent residents with first floor apartments have access to a recently repaired and well-maintained stairwell, with good hand rails

n a unique move, the Asian Council of Reducing Crime has come up with an idea of people approaching the police without an element of fear. Over a session of two hours from 12 noon to 2pm, a police officer will be available to meet up with any member of the community at Highland Park Library where they can have a one-on-one with a police officer for a maximum of 15 minutes. “It’s doesn’t always have to be the cops that come to you when something bad happens; but you can also go to the cops for a friendly chat,” says Rosa Chow, chairperson of the Asian Council on Reducing Crime in an attempt to break barriers. “No Chinese person likes to go to the police station in their lifetime,” she says. police officer who will be available to meet around eight people in a span of two hours at the local library. “The police can provide an alternative information resource on crime prevention for the community in a relaxing atmosphere over a cup of Chinese tea. “A member of the Asian Council on Reducing Crime will be around to
assist, and a library staff will be available to support the process. But this is not to be mistaken as a platform to reporting crime,” she cautions. The Asian Council on Reducing Crime is constantly working on ideas on reducing crime and hopes that this fosters a healthy relationship between the police and the Asian community.
Kubelwagen on show ➤ From Page 1 Mr Chong secured his slice of history in 2009 – although he was originally in the market for a 1952 Volkswagen. The car, which was in “really poor condition”, required a significant amount of restoration to make it roadworthy again, which was eventually completed in 2011. It’s his third time exhibiting in the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show but he hasn’t always been interested in vintage cars – he said that only sparked around 20 years ago. “I think history is quite important. When you can find out where it’s come from and then you look back many, many years ago. It
survived the Great War...it’s fascinating.” He says his favourite part of the show is talking with other collectors. “People are really passionate about their hobby and seeing what other people have [they like] to find out more as well.” Online registrations for the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show have now closed with 802 cars and motorcycles registered. Organiser Richard Waugh says that’s a 27 per cent increase on last year’s record numbers – and “considerably up” on the 2016 inaugural effort of 472 cars. ■ The Brit & Euro Classic Car Show is on Sunday March 4 at Lloyd Elsmore Park from 10am-3pm. Family members want Air NZ safety video withdrawn H
owick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh has spoken out against a new Air New Zealand safety video filmed in Antarctica. He joins a chorus of upset family members whose loved ones died in the 1979 Mt Erebus disaster. Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica. All 257 people on board were killed. Some Erebus families are asking for the safety video to be withdrawn. Dr Waugh, a chaplain of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators and an aviation historian, is also a spokesperson for the Erebus National Memorial, a group advocating for a national memorial commemorating the Erebus air accident. It has also sought help from the government. The voluntary group has been advocating for more than 18 months for the national memorial to be ready for the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, still the Southern Hemisphere’s worst aviation accident. Dr Waugh and many of the memorial group are wrestling with the issues “about the many layers involved in this Air New Zealand-Antarctica-Safety video discussion, and how inextricably it relates to the timing of our advocacy for the Erebus National Memorial”. Air New Zealand said in a media release its next safety video, due for release in March, “will highlight the fundamental importance of Antarctica in understanding global climate change”. The upcoming video, and associated content profiling the work of scientists on the frozen continent, builds on Air New Zealand’s partnership with Antarctica New Zealand, which has supported climate and environmental research in the Ross Sea area since 2012, the airline said. But Dr Waugh said there are Erebus family members “who I know have strong (and negative)
Peter Wheeler from Pakuranga Athletics Club has taken out the National 3000m Championships at the Porritt Track and Field Classic. Held recently in Hamilton, it was the first national title for the middle distance runner and a big accomplishment after an injury forced him out of his usual training regime for three months last year. “I was aqua jogging every day to maintain fitness. Coming into summer I had a few months where I was able to build back up into some consistent training and that’s just starting to pay off now,” he said.

Wheeler claims national 3000m title after injury By Kelly Teed
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 22, 2018 — 13
He says while he’d prepared for a fast race, the large field of 30 competitors meant the race turned tactical. “These championship events often turn into sit and kick races,” he said. “Even though the event is 3000m (7.5 laps of the track), you really need a good amount of raw speed to avoid getting buried in the last 400m. “I kept in contact with the leaders for the first seven laps and closed the last 200m in 26 seconds to get the win.” Wheeler, who has been running since primary school, says while he’s had a few minor placing medals before, he’s never managed to pull off a win
at the national level. “I actually think Dave (coach) was more excited than I was!” He says the highlight of his athletics career so far was running a 1500m personal best of 3:48:20 at the New Zealand Commonwealth Games trials in January where he placed 4th. He has a long term goal of a sub four minute mile — and he’s close. “A four minute mile converts to a 3:42 1500m so I am currently a few seconds off. “It has taken me a while to realise that the secret to racing is not about digging deep for more than you’re capable of, it’s about knowing exactly what you are capable of.”

Why are we paying for Pride Festival?
Well done Grangers, Basalt
When we have big rains, large amounts of polluted water flows into the harbour but there is no money available to fix the drains However there is money available for the Auckland Pride Festival (pride of what - I notice they no longer call themselves heroes)? Do ratepayers want to see their money spent on (I quote from kiwifist) “New Zealand’s biggest arseplay event”? I don’t, and I don’t see why my rates money should subsidise the so-called pride festival. If people of that persuasion want a festival, let them pay for it themselves. Mayor Goff said he would cut out unnecessary expenditure so is this a necessity? I don’t think so. The council’s priority should be roads rats and rubbish.
Really pleased to see our local restaurant and bar Grangers taking the lead in doing away with plastic drinking straws and now I see that another Howick favourite, Basalt, have done likewise! I hope this initiative will inspire other local bars and restaurants to do likewise and reduce unnecessary plastic from entering our precious marine environment. Thanks to the management who’ve taken the lead. I will continue to support these restaurants and hope that other local establishments follow suit.

has helped sales, as it’s the first time we’ve seen a positive year-on-year sales increase in seven months. “There were some really positive figures from around the country, with 11 out of 16 regions experiencing an increase in sales when compared to the same time last year. Additionally, Gisborne saw the highest number of properties sold in the month of January since January 2007,” continues Norwell.
House prices continue to be driven by strong regional growth The median house price for New Zealand increased by 7.1 per cent to $520,000, up from $485,500 in January 2017. Auckland’s median price decreased by 1.2 per cent to
$820,000 down from $830,000 at the same time last year. The only other region to experience a price decrease year-onyear was West Coast, down 10.0 per cent to $135,000. January also saw two regions experience record prices: ■■ Otago – up 32.9 per cent to $475,000 ■■ Hawke’s Bay – up 18.4 per cent to $438,000. “House prices across the country continue to hold up with 14 out of 16 regions experiencing a year-on-year price increase. Otago’s record price for January was driven by a strong increase in Clutha and the Central Otago District,” says Norwell. “Looking at the decrease in median price in Auckland, much of the reduction is attributable to the decreases
in Manukau City, Rodney District and Waitakere City which were down -10.2 per cent, -4.3 per cent and -2.8 per cent respectively. Manukau City’s median price is the lowest since January 2016, Rodney’s is the lowest median price since September 2017 and Waitakere’s is the lowest since March 2016, so you can see why this has pulled the overall Auckland median down,” she says.

Regions with the biggest increase were West Coast (+87 days to 159), Taranaki (+16 days to 56) and Gisborne (+13 days to 43). The only region with a decrease in the number of days to sell year-on-year was Northland – down 3 days to 45.

A sleek kitchen transformation
ADVERTORIAL KC13239A
She was looking for a change after 19 years. Diana Cernohorsky felt that her home at Huntington Place needed a bit of a spruce up. She thought of changing the carpets but her niece suggested that maybe a new kitchen would make a huge difference. And she was right. “When you live in a house for so long, it needs upkeep,” says Diana who has been living at the address since 1999. Diana, a customs broker set about doing some research and getting quotes from kitchen makers. She soon discovered that the service that Jag Kitchens was offering was far more appealing. The company uses state of the art Computer Aided Design (CAD) software that enables clients to see exactly what their kitchen will look like in 3D. Diana says that a 3-D visual of the new layout gave her plenty to think about. It also helped that Jag Kitchens were willing to recommend trades people required for the job — unlike some other kitchen design companies she had approached. After a consultation with experienced kitchen designer Hannah Brown from Jag Kitchens, Diana was more

confident that they could breathe new life into the tired kitchen — even though they had to work within the required space.
Diana who enjoys baking finds that the new placement of the oven is so much more convenient than bending under the bench to access it.
The new kitchen was updated to achieve a more modern fresh look with sleek new white cabinetry and a marble look benchtop. The length of the kitchen was extended, instantly giving it a more spacious look.
While the existing layout was kept similar, moving the oven to an eye level tower unit with the microwave stacked above, makes it very convenient she says. The wall cabinets above the cooktop were extended to the window to house the

s the mercury rose during January to produce the hottest month on record, sales volumes across New Zealand rose when compared to the same time last year for the first time in seven months according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). The number of properties sold in New Zealand during January 2018 increased by 2.7 per cent when compared to January 2017 (4366 up from 4,251). The number of properties sold in Auckland increased 0.9 per cent year-on-year to 1,157 up from 1,147. Regions with the biggest increase in sales count yearon-year were: ■■ Nelson – up 27.9 per cent (78 compared to 61 in January 2017) ■■ Canterbury – up 18.1 per cent (607 compared to 514 in January 2017) ■■ Tasman – 15.8 per cent (44 compared to 38 in January 2017) ■■ Gisborne – up 12.5 per cent (36 compared to 32 in January 2017). Fighting for charity By Kelly Teed
The decision was made to raise funds for Totara Hospice after both Raffaelli and Morgan experienced family members go through there – and as a way to give back to the community. “It’s [kickboxing] helped me a lot through my life. I wouldn’t be where I am doing these shows today if I hadn’t found this stuff, so it’s giving back a little,” says Raffaelli. ■■ A raffle will be held on the night with proceeds and donations going towards Totara Hospice. Any businesses interested in donating and goods or services for the event can contact Troy Morgan on 0210411184.

Two long-time friends are encouraging people to get in the boxing ring to raise funds for charity. The Battle on the Coast Fight Night, organised by Dave Raffaelli and Troy Morgan, will be held at Te Puru Sports Hall in Beachlands on March 24 with proceeds donated to Totara Hospice. It won’t be their first shot at organising a fight – Raffaelli says he’s organised “a fair few” in the past, and has already worked
with Morgan on one event. Raffaelli says events like Fight for Life helped white collar, or corporate boxing grow in popularity and has created a niche today. “[There’s] guys who work 9-5 jobs or tradies who work full on and can’t commit to team sports but are too old to be amateur boxers (under 25 years old) but don’t want to go professional. “For some people, it’s a bucket list activity.” Boxing is for everyone, says Morgan. “We’ve got a guy who’s never played sport before [but he’s just
really taken it on and dedicated himself to training – some people don’t get into sports but when they box it becomes something for them – a goal they can achieve. “When they get in there [on fight night] and do it, they’ve really accomplished something.” The Beachlands locals say they were motivated to put on the local event to give residents a night to look forward to – and make it accessible for people to get there and get home. “Most of these shows tend to be out towards the city. We’ve got buses on from Highland Park and will be taking people there and back,” says Morgan.
The club caters for all levels of archers ranging from irst time shooters to world championship winners. Whitford Club has several NZFAA (New Zealand Field Archery Assn) trained instructors that are available each week. Gear is available to hire from just $10. We must salute Murray Halberg’s legacy Agnew’s Angle
I
t was nice to see Roy Williams pay homage to Sir Murray Halberg at the Halberg Awards which has raised so much money to inspire disabled sportsmen and women like Olympic sprint champion Liam Malone and sensational swimmer Sophie Pascoe among many others. Despite a rugby injury which crippled one arm, Sir Murray became New Zealand’s first sub-4 minute miler and overcame the disappointment of failing to medal in the 1500 won by Ireland’s Ron Delaney at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics by winning gold over 5000m at Rome four years later. That was the games in which fellow Arthur Lydiardtrained Kiwis Peter Snell and Barry Magee struck gold and bronze medals over 800m and the marathon respectively. Halberg would be the first to admit that Snell, who struck a golden 800-1500m double at
the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was the greater natural talent in terms of power and pace. But I have long held the belief that in achieving the maximum of which he was capable, no New Zealand athlete surpassed him. Whereas Snell (Tokyo 1964) and John Walker’s (1976 Montreal) 1500m Olympic golds followed in the tradition of Jack Lovelock’s (1936 Berlin) by making their sprint for glory 300m from the finish, the gutsy Halberg’s 5000m triumph came when he broke from the pack much earlier. It was an outrageous foxversus-the-hounds gamble that paid a rich reward and epitomised the steely character of a man who also broke a world three-mile record. I once joked with him that he had acid rather than blood in his veins and his old rival and great friend Bill Baillie chortled happily in agreement. But great athlete though he was, it is his establishment of
the Halberg Awards in raising so much money for disabled athletes to express their sporting talents that provides the true legacy of a remarkable New Zealander in much the same way as did the late Sir Edmond Hillary’s work with the Sherpas following his conquest of Everest. There were no surprise that Team New Zealand should win the latest Halberg supreme and team awards upon avenging their San Francisco disappointment in Bermuda against the American challenge backed by Oracle millionaire Larry Ellison and masterminded by Russell Coutts and brash Aussie skipper Jimmy Spithill. In terms of design, sailing and the innovative introduction of cyclists replacing the traditional role of grinders, it was indeed a complete team performance. So much so that they refused to nominate brilliant young helmsman Peter Burling for the individual

sportsman award. That went to amiable world shot put champion Peter Walsh with remarkable kayaker Lisa Carrington taking the women’s award upon winning four world medals; two gold, a silver and bronze. Nor was anyone surprised that fantastic Sophie Pascoe should once again dominate the disabled women’s award. It’s the achievements of special athletes like her and retired Olympic sprinter Liam Malone that makes us realise just how great Sir Murray’s contribution has been. Meanwhile full marks to coach Tana Umaga and his young Blues team for winning the Brisbane Tens rugby tournament at Suncorp Stadium. However it’s disappointing to learn that Steve Hansen plans up to four training camps before France’s mid-year tour. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning writer and author
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 22, 2018 — 23
HPCC in top four
Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club has gone through to the top four of Auckland Premier Cricket’s Hedley Howarth trophy after an outstanding two wicket stand by Bill Walsh and Cam Neal. Grafton were asked to bat first at Lloyd Elsmore Park with Dale Phillips picking up career best figures with the ball before Cam Neale scored a century to secure first innings points for Howick Pakuranga. Grafton’s top order looked to be doing the business early on, with Jack Parsons (40), Ian Cockbain (83) and Nick Hendrie (71) taking their side through to 224/4. With only a few overs left before an enforced declaration, Dale Phillips took over with the ball, ripping through the Grafton middle order. Phillips finished with 6-68, his best figures in Premier cricket while Taine Jolley 2-52 played a solid supporting role. The Howick reply was all about two batsmen, Bill Walsh (96) and Cam Neal (111). The pair came together in the 17th over and put on a massive 161 runs for the fifth wicket, Neal playing the perfect innings for the situation. Both batsmen worked singles well and when the ball was there to be put away it was done so with an occasional show of power. With the bulk of the scoring done by Neale and Walsh, Howick’s tail ensured they got home for first innings points in 47 overs. Carl de Beer (5-90) toiled hard for the visitors with his leg spin, picking up his 50th Premier wicket with the dismissal of Jolley. Howick claim the points and will advance to the top four section of the Hedley Howarth. ■ Grafton 250/8 (J Parsons 40, I Cockbain 83, N Hendrie 71; D Phillips 6-68) lost first innings to Howick Pakuranga 260 (B Walsh 96, C Neale 111; CJ de Beer 5-90).

First XV prepares The school year has just started but the Macleans College First XV is already hard at work fundraising for the trip of a lifetime. The team is set to travel to the USA and Canada in July for 12 days. Leaving at the end of term two, they’ll fly straight to Vancouver for games against British Columbia U18 and the USA Collegiate U19, before flying to San Francisco for a game against the Northern California All Stars XV. It won’t be all work and no play – the team will also visit Alcatraz Island, see a Major League Baseball game and visit Disneyland for a day. Tour manager Bevan Packer says players and parents have undertaken a number of fundraising initiatives to cover the $5500 needed for each player to travel. A recent golf tournament at Pakuranga Golf Club raised $16,000 towards the trip – but there’s still work to do. Upcoming fundraising events include regular Sunday car washes in the school bus bay from 9am-1pm, a 5km fun run and selling drinks and food at the college’s athletics days – but Packer says the major fundraiser will be a Quiz Night and Auction to be held at Macleans College on Saturday May 12.

rom someone who didn’t fit in and always felt left out at the school sports day, to being appointed as an athlete ambassador for Special Olympics New Zealand, Monique Irvine has come a long way. Half Moon Bay resident Monique is one of the six athletes with intellectual disabilities handpicked to be a global messenger for Special Olympics New Zealand. She and five others will take part in four workshops this year focussed on goal setting, communication and presentation, networking, planning and development. “Being selected as a global messenger is a huge achievement and an amazing opportunity for the athletes,” says Julia Sanson, regional team leader for Special Olympics. Having just returned from a workshop in Wellington, Monique - the only representative from Auckland - says she enjoys the challenge of visiting schools, helping with their sports days and encouraging
students to give everything a go. “I feel really proud to be a global messenger. I love encouraging people like me to become fit and healthy and enjoy sport and social opportunities that Special Olympics can offer. It’s all about inclusion,” Monique says. The 28-year-old champion swimmer, who represented New Zealand at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, took second place at the World Summer Games and missed gold by a split-second. “There is nothing better than hearing your name being yelled from the sidelines and maybe winning a ribbon or medal,” she says Monique believes Special Olympics is all about finishing and it doesn’t matter if you are helping someone from your own team or someone else’s. She is grateful that she has been involved with Special Olympics since she was sixyears-old. Seeing her discomfort at a local primary school sports day, one of the Special Olym-

pics coordinators approached her mother Astrid and asked her to bring Monique along to a school programme she was running. Monique soon joined the junior athletics team where we did running, ball handling skills and had a go at many different sports. “A lot of these athletes are still my friends today,” she says. Winner of the Howick Local Board Sports Award for Disabled Athletes in 2015 and 2016,
she has participated in eight different sporting games and has recently added one more to her list— cheer leading. “An important part of being an athlete with the Special Olympic family is that it benefits the parents and caregivers too. “Every athlete needs backing not just from their club but also from parents and family. A big group of my mum and dad’s friends are from Special Olympics and they support each other so there are benefits for them as well.” Monique recently addressed students and staff at the Pegasus Unit, Pakuranga College and students at Beachlands Primary School. “My goal is to make people aware of this great organisation and how being involved is not only about sporting opportunities but also about networking and friendship with people from around New Zealand.” She says she would like to get involved with helping junior athletes “and help train them the same way Aroha, the sports coordinator trained me.”
