Flat Bush property developer at the centre of a mortgage fraud scheme involving about 75 properties in Hamilton and Auckland has been sentenced to four years and seven months in prison with a minimum non-parole period of two years and three months for charges brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Kang (Thomas) Huang, also known as Gang Wang, was sentenced today in the High Court at
Auckland. Mr Huang pleaded guilty to all 10 charges he faced on December 21, 2017, which were eight charges of ‘Obtaining by Deception’, one charge of ‘Corruptly Giving Consideration to an Agent’, and one charge of ‘Dishonest Use of a Document’. Mr Huang, whose residential address is in Ormiston Road according to the NZ Companies Office, operated a property development business and was charged with providing false documents or
information to several banks across multiple home loan applications. He was also charged with bribing a bank employee. Mr Huang dishonestly obtained about $52 million of loans through these activities. The other defendants in the case, Mr Huang’s wife, Kang Xu (also known as Yan (Jenny) Zhang), lawyer Gang (Richard) Chen and former bank employee Zongliang (Charly) Jiang, are due to appear in

the Auckland High Court for trial commencing on February 26. “Such use of deception, and bribery in one instance, undermines lenders’ confidence in borrowers in the mortgage market,” SFO director, Julie Read said. “If banks have to introduce additional checks, these costs may be passed on to borrowers increasing the cost of mortgages for all. “The sentence...reflects the serious nature of misconduct in this case.”

evan Congdon, one of the finest all-round cricketers ever produced by New Zealand, has died aged 79. A death notice says Congdon passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved girls on February 10 at Howick Baptist Hospital. ESPN CricInfo’s Martin Williamson writes that Congdon was a technically correct batsman with tremendous powers of concentration - as evidenced by his back-toback big hundreds against England in 1973 - but was also able to play in a cavalier manner when the occasion demanded. “He supplemented this with sound fielding and medium-pace in and outswingers.” says Williamson. “He led New Zealand with distinction to their first Test win over Australia (after putting Australia in), and but for dropped catches, would probably have recorded a momentus win over England at Lord’s in 1973. “Unlike many, he thrived on the captaincy and his batting seemed the better for the responsibility.” Congdon played 61 Tests in a 13-year career, scoring 3448 runs at an average of 32.22 with seven centuries. He also took 59 wickets. Congdon played in 11 one-day internationals, including New Zealand’s first in the format in 1973 against Pakistan. His average of 56.33 in ODIs is still the best for a New Zealand batsman with a mini-

mum of 10 innings. He is survived by his wife Shirley and is father and father-in-law of Ali and John, and Sandy and Steve and grandfather to Matthew, Joshua, Lilly and Reeves. “Loved son of the late Cecil and Muriel Congdon. Brother to Fred, Les, Reg and Ken (all deceased) and brother to Neil,” the death notice says. “Special thanks to the staff of the Howick Baptist Hospital for their loving and tender care of Bevan over the last 12 months.” A service for Bevan will be held at St Columba Presbyterian Church, 480 Ti Rakau Drive, Botany, Auckland on Friday, February 16 at 1.30pm. “In lieu of flowers donations to Howick Baptist Hospital, www.hbh. org.nz would be appreciated.”
New Zealand’s smaller newspaper publishers have started 2018 in a buoyant mood, unfazed by the push to go digital, according to an industry survey. The poll of publishers, editors and executives found most respondents did not see a negative being print focused - and moving to a multiplatform environment was a low priority. However, their papers were experiencing revenue pressure. Also, managers wanted helped with strategic direction, sales, reducing costs and streamlining editorial production. The survey was conducted by Flame Tree Media, which consults to media in Australia and New Zealand, and was distributed by the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association (NZCNA) which Times Newspapers is a member of. Flame Tree executive director Stuart Howie said the data showed a tale of two countries when it came to newspapers. “The big players, who hold most of the major newspaper properties in New Zealand, are branching off and aggressively transforming their business models,” Howie said. But smaller publishers still see a future in serving communities with hyper-local content and advertising - and doing it in print. Almost 80 per cent of respondents to the survey were very or extremely confident about the future of their businesses. The survey also found: Most did not see it as a priority
to move from a print focus to a digital focus, with three-quarters of respondents rating this as a low priority; Audience engagement and subscribers were the top priorities for publishers, with sales and creating quality content close behind; Starting new business ventures was not on the radar. “These results show a strong commitment to local newspaper publishing in New Zealand,” Howie said. NZCNA president Simon Ellis said community newspapers’ ability to generate unique and relevant content would continue to set them apart from other media. “For advertisers, community newspapers cut through the media fragmentation and are delivered directly into most homes,” Ellis said. “This is proven to drive sales for advertisers in a cost effective manner. No other media offers this local connectivity and connection with buyers and sellers.” Many media companies chasing digital advertising revenue have found it to be a mirage. Data shows Facebook and Google are taking most digital advertising revenue - an estimated 54 per cent globally in 2017, according to eMarketer. Howie said: “Research shows that while digital gets our attention, print is more likely to provide information that is retained, acted upon and converts to a sale. Essentially, print equates to trust and credibility.”

Time to take east Auckland to the world B
ursting with exciting ideas and an action plan to work with tour operators, Bo Burns cannot wait to put east Auckland on the world map. “Thanks to the Howick Local Board, Howick Tourism Inc. also known as East Auckland Tourism, we are proud to announce the appointment of our Marketing and Communications manager, a local woman, Bo Burns who is commissioned to drive our newly setup tourism initiative and drive for east Auckland,” says Charmaine Chapman, chairperson East Auckland Tourism. Bo has been a Howick resident and has always had a huge passion for the east Auckland, encouraging people to explore its beautiful and historical suburbs and local events. It’s only been three weeks since Bo was appointed as Marketing and Communications manager of Howick Tourism Inc and the go-getter has already worked on a Strategic Living Business Plan, Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Fund Report, membership proposal as well as a blueprint for the website and logo. As of last week, Howick Tourism Inc will also be known as East Auckland Tourism to incorporate the wider areas of Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga, Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai and Clevedon. “It is far more beneficial to promote the whole area as a desirable destination. We have so much to offer and we will work with tour operators to bring people here from cruise liners,” says Bo who

works closely with Ms Chapman. The action plan is for tourists at the Viaduct to hop on to a boat to Half Moon Bay where a dedicated van will be waiting to take people around. “Earlier, people were hesitant to visit east Auckland because they were worried about getting stuck in traffic which could delay their return to the cruise liner. But now with a transport arrangement they can save on time.” There will be different packages catering to people with varied interests with lots of tourists attractions like Howick Historical Village, Shamrock Cottage, Uxbridge Arts Centre, Stockade Hill, Howick Beach, Howick Farmers Market, Clevedon Market, Pakuranga Night
Market, Botany Market, Mangemangeroa walkway, Half Moon Bay Marina, Rotary Walkway, Polish Heritage Museum, Zen Gardens, Ayrlies Garden, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple and plenty of vineyards and scenic places to explore. “We will have a breakdown of activities for those interested in fitness or a family day out,” she says. Bo is keen to work closely with local retailers to promote their businesses whilst tapping into the tourism market. A small membership fee for businesses to be part of the website, social media promotions and ATEED workshops to understand the tourism market—will be charged. “We are currently funded by the Howick Local Board to get us up and running after which we will work toward our business plan to sustain ourselves, partially at least.” Right now, the East Auckland Tourism website is being updated to be a one-stop shop highlighting tourist attractions. The website will be launched midMarch with great fanfare. It will be celebrated with a special Family Day Out that will replicate an ideal day tourists can experience in east Auckland says Bo, who has got the ball rolling to make east Auckland as successful a tourist destination as Matakana and Waiheke Island. East Auckland Tourism will also involve local sports personalities, artists and celebrities to promote it to Aucklanders as well as overseas visitors on social media as a must-visit attraction.
Young engineers in the making By FARIDA MASTER Gone are the days of delivering a traditional technology programme. With a new focus on mechatronics, students of Howick Intermediate School are working on technology solutions by using a transdisciplinary approach. In the classroom, lead teacher Sarah Baleicakau challenges the students to work out the dimensions of a truss bridge that can take the weight of a robotic truck. Students are learning about the angles and dimensions of
a bridge underpinned by a scientific component. “If we want to engage children, they must see the relevance,” says Ms Baleicakau. Principal Yolande Franke, who has been instrumental in rebuilding the school and turning around its curriculum, is enthused about partnering with industries to see real life application and not just skill-based learning. “We are excited about our new DigiSTEM programme that we believe is a point of difference. It has a focus on mechatronics,” she says.
“It has a trans-disciplinary approach and students learn how the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) build on one another. “We want students to experience working as engineers and they will use coding and robotics and the STEM disciplines to address authentic inquiries.” The eight-week structured programme increases the students’ understanding on how the disciplines are integrated and build on one another.
We have come a long way Three years ago I doubt a medicinal cannabis bill would have been able to be passed through the MP for Botany Parliament. Yet earlier this month the Parliament passed such a law unanimously through its first reading. Two different bills have just been debated. The first was introduced by the government and builds on the work done to widen access to medical cannabis for the terminally ill. It did this by providing a legal defence for the use of cannabis to those with a terminal illness. The other bill was a “grow your own” bill from the Green Party that was very flawed, and was rejected. The previous government made some big steps in this area, such as providing lists of cannabis-based medical products that could be prescribed and would likely get Ministry of Health approval to doctors. But, given a limited market, there are still issues around cost and access to these medical products. That means that it is still difficult for people who are suffering from a terminal illness to access products that have been shown to have the capability to ease suffering in certain cases. The question, then, is how do we best work within this system to provide a compassionate and evidence based avenue for treating these patients? In these limited cases, it is not only compassionate but also reasonable to recognise that the limited use of cannabis may ease these patients’ suffering and they should not be considered to be breaking the law if a doctor signs off on the use of cannabis. The discussion over medical cannabis should not be used as a way to legalise cannabis by stealth though. This is what the second Bill from the Green Party attempted to do. The Bill would have allowed people diagnosed with “migraines” as well as other conditions, to gain access to a waiver to grow and use their own cannabis. Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

Welcoming the Year of the Dog By Farida Master Representatives from race relations, Human Rights Commission, Howick Local Board, police, pastors, school principals and other prominent members of the community were there in full attendance at the Annual Reunion Dinner held at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush on Tuesday, February 6. Dame Susan Devoy, Race Relations Commissioner for New Zealand said it is a great note to end the Waitangi Day celebrations at the temple that embraces diversity. “You may wonder why the police are so closely associated with the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple,” said Wendy Spiller, Area Commander Counties Manukau East, at the opening ceremony. “Our relationship is based on mutual respect and values like kindness, compassion and making different communities feel safe and welcomed.” The evening was filled with fine food and a line-up of traditional dance performance groups that showcased rich Asian culture and heritage. As Jami-Lee Ross MP for Botany said, “I visit the Fo Guang Shan temple on a number of special occasions but this is the event I most look forward to in the whole year.” The evening that had around a 1000 people attend with a lot more disappointed that they couldn’t get tickets to the fixture that acknowledges

he wet weather is once again bad news for the state of our parks and reserves. Over the weekend, an Auckland Council tractor mower became bogged down in a park behind Elim Christian College on Botany Road. The incident comes just months after Auckland Council became inundated with complaints from residents of overgrown grass and unkempt reserves. The large tractor was last seen mowing the lawns at the reserve before its back end became stuck in a ditch that had flooded with water. It has been stuck in the mud since Saturday, with half of the reserve left unmown. Auckland Council head of operational management and mainte-
nance Agnes McCormack says the frequency of mowing has been slowed down by the torrential downpours this month. “Due to the continued warm weather and amount of rain that Auckland has been receiving, we have been experiencing higher grass growth in our parks and reserves than what is usually expected for this time of the year,” she says. “The summer heat usually brings about dry conditions which slow down grass growth, but the added wet weather has brought about more spring-like conditions.” McCormack says contractors will get on top of the additional growth when conditions are dry enough to get mowers on site without risking the machines getting stuck or causing ruts to parks and reserves.

Botany Town Centre will be transformed into the streets of Beijing with an authentic street festival. The festival will feature a beautifully decorated Town Centre Drive adorned with
Chinese lanterns, traditional food, arts and crafts vendors, as well as a variety of cultural performances on the stage and along the street. The local board is partnering with The Pakuranga Chinese Association to bring an exciting line up of performers with more than 20 performances throughout the day. There will be a lion dance, waist drummers, singers, dancers, choirs and the Auckland Lark Orchestra.People will also get an opportunity to enjoy demonstrations of calligraphy and Chinese painting. Where’s our bus stop?
I wonder how much longer the travelling public of Howick must wait for a replacement bus shelter in the centre of Howick after the last one was demolished by a bus more than six months ago. By comparison, AT recently moved the bus stop on Dannemora Drive approximately 200 metres and installed a brand new bus shelter. This bus stop services one bus route compared to the five bus routes serviced by the bus stop on Picton Street.

What happened to respect?
We are writing this open letter in the hope it may help someone find what is left of their lost cat, and thank the wonderful neighbours who scooped up the body and dumped it on our drive. About 10 nights ago (around January 30) we had a knock at the door at dinner time. A distressed lady had hit and killed a ginger tabby cat on Whitford Road. She asked if it was our cat. We do not have cats and could offer no suggestion as to owners, although we had seen it on

our property a couple of times. Then on Wednesday, February 7, I noticed a smell when walking down our drive. Someone had kindly scooped up the decaying cat remains from wherever they were and put them in a green plastic plant pot to carry the dead animal then tipped the cat’s body next to our raised flowerbed on the front drive. The somewhat sticky plant pot was left besides the body together with an expired registration tag (Honda Odyssey). The really sad thing for us is we moved up from rural Wellington into Whitford some 2½ years ago and into a neighbourhood where clearly very few people have any time or respect for one another. About one year ago, whilst we were out, a neighbour (who has never introduced themselves either before or after the event) drove a dying sheep into our property and shut the gate telling our then 15-year-old boy it ‘was our problem now’. The sheep had terminal fly strike and died within 24 hours but not before it infected our stock. We also had a carcass to dispose of. Is it the way of Whitford to welcome new members of the community with gifts of dead and dying animals? What happened to respect and community spirit?

Lack of knowledge
Jacinda and Winston may lose their jobs. In most Commonwealth Countries (16), there would be outrage if
the Governor General unilaterally re-classified his or her own position and continued with official duties. The position of the GG would be vacated. Would this happen in a country with an established constitution, such as New Zealand? A letter sent to Her Majesty the Queen (March 13, 2017) stated: At her swearing-in ceremony at Government House on 28 September 2016 the new Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy made the following statement: “I will respect and honour the unique partnership between the Crown and Maori as in our founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi.” She has shown extreme lack of knowledge of the original wording and intent of the Treaty and thereby introduces a racial bias that is irresponsible and inappropriate for her role as the representative of the Queen. The installation of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister by Her ‘partner’ is clearly invalid. Upon advice, this matter was referred to Bill English, Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters who have chosen to delay it or ignore it without explanation or reply. New Zealanders who value the sovereign, undivided status of all citizens await their replies. From the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet: ‘The Sovereign rarely personally exercises her executive powers; since the monarch does not normally reside in New Zealand, she appoints a governor-general to represent her and exercise most of her powers.

Re your article “Time and price wait for no man”, Times, February 8 on page 7 of the highlighted Howick/ Pakuranga house prices in 1973. The houses you mentioned at $93,000 and $44,000 were very, expensive houses for that year. My wife and I purchased our first home – a 3-bedroom house in Linden (next door to Tawa) - in Wellington for $15,000 in 1972. The house was comfortable, had a large

What a terrible eyesore the turquoise wall is which borders the motorway near Ellerslie. I can understand that the houses in that area need protection but the plain concrete walls with incised decoration are preferable by far.

Swapping suits for sneakers I
t’s time to dig out your running gear and swap your dress shoes for sneakers because the Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk is back. Last year, more than 450 people hit the pavement for the annual event which is organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club. With a choice of distances available for both individuals and teams, there’s something for everyone. Entrants can choose to go it alone or in teams of four in a 5km walk, 5km run or 10km run on a stunning course beginning in Highbrook Park which is located at the end of Pukekiwiriki Place, off Kerwyn Avenue. The event, now in its fifth year, draws hundreds of people from the surrounding businesses every year as they vie to claim the title of 2018 champion – all the while raising funds for a good cause. While it’s aimed at businesses in the area, not working in Highbrook isn’t a valid excuse. The event is
open to everyone with entries just $20 per person. All proceeds from the event are donated to charities, with the majority of funds going towards an Audio Star hearing testing machine for Middlemore Hospital. Last year’s event raised a whopping $22,000 through participants and sponsors, with a range of charities benefiting. Held straight after work, the Fun Run and Walk is a great alternative to those standard after-work drinks – in fact, why not do both? After the exercise is done, hang around and recover with your team over a couple of drinks and a BBQ while enjoying the live entertainment on offer. Rally up your office team and head to www.highbrookrotary.org.nz to register and for more details. The Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 5:45pm sharp. Teams must be ready to go by 5:30pm.

ith massive economic and environmental advantages, it is no surprise that prefab and tiny houses are trending worldwide. Founder and CEO Graham Bloxham developed the eco tiny iPod tiny home product to disrupt the building industry by providing a fresh take on ready-to-go, portable and stackable housing. “So many New Zealanders are in need of affordable houses but don’t have access to finance, land or insurance. The building industry is stumbling along, overcharging with long wait times. In some cases 2 years. We have found ways around all this,” Bloxham says. “I started Eco tiny to make housing affordable and I don’t mean $500k affordable, I mean $100k. For under a hundred grand Bloxham says you can be in an off-the-grid stylish Scandinavian styled tiny pod in 10 weeks including consent.” Eco tiny will build homes nationwide in particular for - IWI wanting to get Whanau out of cars and sheds. - A farmer on the edge of a tourism hot spot looking to add value and make extra cash. - Infill housing in the suburbs. - Stack-able pods in the CBD around buildings. The banks are getting tougher. Eco Tiny has negotiated a rent-

to-own model with wrap-around services and insurance. Eco tiny houses are self-contained small homes 22 square metre studio and 34 sq m, 1 bedroom units, often built on wheels – perfect for first home buyers, anyone looking to get on the property ladder or if they’re hoping to reduce their carbon footprint. Eco tiny houses can be off-thegrid or connected to services. Bloxham’s ipod called the Ecotiny Warrier pod is powered by wind, sun, gas and rain. The Ecotiny Warrier pod is either plumbed in and consented or totally self sustainable. Built from NZ steel eco panels the iPods are flexible, strong, super warm, healthy and exceptionally cool. Bloxham says Eco tiny can manufacture 10 iPods a month currently and will be able to get up to 50 a month all going well. Eco tiny’s design process allows consumers to mod their pod and add off-the-grid elements such as wind generation, Bloxham has driven the cost out
of solar systems and added in a myriad of IOT Internet of things and sensors to mod the pod up and get connected. Off-the-grid doesn’t mean off-the-radar. You may have seen the tiny house stolen from Canberra, Australia in September. Eco tiny’s iPod tiny homes come equipped with a security system that syncs with the Eco tiny’s dashboard app on your smartphone. You can also check your iPods vital stats including water and solar collected, income tracking if plugged into Airbnb which links to Xero and does the tax on the fly, battery levels, warmth and add other gadgets for a connected life. Bloxham is dedicated. Eco tiny’s goal is to sell 3000 tiny homes by working within the changing regulatory environment. Infill housing rule changes, Auckland just freed up 35,000+ sections and Hutt City wants 2000 + more homes! Eco tiny is flexible in terms of income and use. Pod owners can rent out and turn the money on or off, to plug their iPod tiny home into Airbnb and pay their investment off in as little as year or turn off if friends are coming to stay. At 3.1m by 7.2m long and a giant deck, Eco tiny’s iPod require only 35sq m of land to get started.

There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. To prepare outdoor areas for every weather condition no matter how adverse, Shades Direct should be the first port of call as it specialises in outdoor awning solutions that add space, style and value to the home. Designed and engineered on New Zealand shores, Shades Direct’s range of quality and versatile outdoor products is suited to both commercial and residential applications. One of Shades Direct’s most popular products is the Outsider awning system. Fabricated from a mixture of
marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider awning doesn’t seem to fit in with a particular home decor, home owners are in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of colours and styles including outdoor blinds (both PVC and
vinyl mesh), shades sails and folding arm awnings. The best part about the service at Shades Direct is that you’re dealing directly with the manufacturer and because of this, prices have never been better! The team also offer a FREE, no-obligation measure and quote and are happy to offer advice on the best outdoor solution for your home. By installing an awning from Shades Direct and enhancing the home, families will soon reap the benefits of having more space to do the outdoor things they love. Don’t wait, contact Shades Direct agent Scott on 021 957 535 or free phone 0800 SHADES (0800 742 337). For further information visit www.shadesdirect.co.nz

he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows nationwide residential property values for January increased 6.4 per cent over the past year and values rose by 3.8 per cent over the past three months. The nationwide average value is now $671,531. When adjusted for
inflation, the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 4.7 per cent. Meanwhile, residential property value growth across the Auckland region increased 0.7 per cent in the year to January and 1.6 per cent over the past three months, which

is the highest rate of growth since November 2016. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,054,974. When adjusted for inflation, values dropped 0.9 per cent over the past year. “January has seen values continue to rise in many places around New Zealand but values have dropped in others and in general activity has been slower in many places over the holiday season,” QV general manager David Nagel said. “Values in Auckland are now rising with quarterly growth up 1.6 per cent, which is a greater increase compared to the last quarter of 2017” “The Wellington market continues to rise, however value growth has
slowed in the Hutt Valley.” “The Christchurch market remains flat while the Dunedin market continues to see a trend of steady value growth seen there throughout 2017.” “Market activity across the nation appears to be picking up now that people have returned to work from the holiday season. The easing of the LVR restrictions for both investors and home buyers this month, along with continued strong net migration, low interest rates, and a shortage of housing supply means it’s likely we can expect moderate value growth to continue during February and March which are annually the busiest months in the housing market.”

n independent stocktake of New Zealand’s housing sector has found the housing crisis the country faces is deeper and more entrenched than previously revealed. Commissioned by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford and released on Monday, A Stocktake of New Zealand’s Housing assesses the entire housing continuum from homeownership and market renting, to state housing and homelessness, and the social cost of sub-standard housing. “It paints a sobering picture of the devastating impacts of the housing crisis, particularly on children,” said Twyford. “Homelessness, transience and substandard housing have had a lasting, and sometimes even deadly effect on our youngest.” He said the stocktake highlights the increasing number of elderly facing housing-related poverty because “fewer and fewer” are mortgage-free and able to survive on Superannuation alone. “Most concerning is the hidden homeless – those who feel they can’t seek government housing support for their families – for which there are no official estimates,” Twyford said. “The stocktake suggests there could be significant numbers of ‘floating homeless’ which will lead to a growing homeless rate as more people seek help.”
Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford said the stocktake highlights the increasing number of elderly facing housing-related poverty because “fewer and fewer” are mortgage-free and able to survive on Superannuation alone.
The stocktake warned New Zealand is “quickly becoming a society divided by the ownership of housing and its related wealth” and found “recent housing and tax policy settings appear to have exacerbated this division”. “The Government is committed to addressing this inequality. Fixing the housing crisis will take bold action. The Government has a significant work programme to respond to these failures; implementing KiwiBuild, improving conditions for renters, increasing the supply of public housing, and rebalancing tax settings to discourage speculation,” Twyford said. The stocktake’s authors were Alan Johnson of the Salvation Army, Otago Public Health Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman and economist Shamubeel Eaqub. “Their work is an important building block that will help the Government make policy decisions.”

here is no time like now to touch up the exterior and the interior of your home. Before winter sets in, a fresh coat of paint with some tender loving care, will add to your home value and appeal. As the to-do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But with summer being the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing, may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Greg Mustill employs an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big

Uxbridge gifted grand piano By Kelly Teed

xbridge Arts & Culture has an exciting new addition – a grand piano. The piano is on loan from Howick local Barbara Stroud for two years, bringing the majestic instrument back into the light after being in storage. The decision to loan the beloved piano wasn’t an easy one, says Barbara, admitting she thought about it for a long time before going through with it. Uxbridge Arts & Culture
event manager Ashley Grogan said the piano is a wonderful score for the centre. “Something’s been missing in the theatre [and] when musicians come, they want to play on the grand as opposed to an upright piano. “Visually, it looks better and sounds better.” She hopes the piano will serve as a draw card for bringing more classical music performances to the centre and says she’s already received interest around the piano. Barbara, a musician herself, says the decision to loan
the piano was spurred by an interest in helping young musicians get a start in the industry. “I thought about it for two years before going through with it and I thought it should be here being used. “I’m very into young people performing and helping them on their way with scholarships and things [and] this is the perfect venue for them to do that,” she says. “That’s my dream, to [help] young people – giving them an opportunity, giving back to the community.”
Beauty queens add sparkle to New Year celebration By Farida Master Instead of inviting politicians like they normally do for their Lunar New Year celebrations, this year the Pakuranga Chinese Association decided to invite two beauty queens who added a sparkle to the Chinese New Year luncheon hosted at the Lucky Restaurant in Meadowlands. Michelle Isemonger, Miss Oceania 2017, was extremely popular with the guests as was Jess Tyson, Miss International 2016 and Miss World Finalist 2018. Jess, who is a news reporter for Maori TV, is also training for NZ IFBB-NZ Federation of Body Building and Fitness
(a bikini-body building competition). Both beauty queens were extremely polite and obliging as guests requested non-stop selfies with the women. Jackie Hui, advisor to the Pakuranga Chinese Association, requested they judge the best dressed ladies at the lunch that welcomed the Year of the Dog. “We plan to have a senior beauty pageant in May and this would be a good time to select some of the seniors for the contest,” she said. There was a lot of banter and prizes given away as never-ending plates of traditional Chinese food arrived, including fish that is considered lucky and auspicious.
Barry Hung, founder of the Pakuranga Chinese Association, with beauty queens Jess Tyson (centre) and Michelle Photo supplied Isemonger (third from right) and Jackie Hui (right) at a Chinese New Year celebration.

Principal retires to coach heads of schools in NZ By Farida Master
F
rom establishing a school to watching it grow into its teenage years, has been a huge learning journey for Mary Wilson. Now it’s time to leave her “baby” after 14 years and coach 32 other school principals in New Zealand. As the founding principal of Baverstock Oaks School, established from a derelict farmhouse in Flat Bush, the educationist, who is internationally known for coaching teachers and principals from Norway and Denmark, will be handing over the baton at the end of term one to someone who believes in the deep-rooted values of the school. Values like servant leadership, parental partnership, shared ownership, enhancing the power of thinking and reflection have all contributed towards a high quality learning environment. When the Board of Trustees first asked about Mrs Wilson for a vision of a still-to-be-established school in an area that would cater to a multi-cultural diaspora, she said she imagined the school to be a well in a village and hoped that everyone would come to the well. Later, when the school was established in 2005, she stepped aside and asked the students, parents, teachers and staff about their vision for the school. “I have been a teacher since
Mary Wilson will be coaching a community of 19 schools up North and five iwi, as well as 13 schools in the South Island, with Police and Health sections. Times Photo Wayne Martin
I was 20 and been a life-long learner. I broke the practice and set up a shared vision process because I wanted every voice to be heard,” says the former founding deputy principal of Somerville Intermediate. “It’s not about me but about us. It’s “we go” and not ego. I believe in servant leadership with the leader being here to serve the community. It’s about drawing from everyone’s strength so that they feel valued. “Our multicultural learning has been huge and we’ve had parents
add value by their active participation.” The school encourages parents teaching children about their cultural beliefs that students then share with their teachers and class mates. The principal who believes children are the centre of our universe proudly says that the students of Baverstock Oaks are from 57 different nationalities. In 2005 the primary school was first established with a roll of just 59 students. “By the end of 2008 we had
862 students from Year 1-Year 8. In 2009, we cut back to Year 1-6 since Mission Heights Junior College was established and our roll went to 530. “Now it is 680 and goes up to 780 by Christmas,” she says. The 58- year-old grandmother of six who set up a strong foundation of ‘feedback and feed-forward’ culture is now moving on to support other communities of schools in New Zealand. She says that much as she is going to miss the school this is but a “change of space”. The Ministry of Education has offered the highly regarded educationist an opportunity to coach a community of 19 schools up North along with five iwi. She will also be facilitating 13 school principals in leading and managing change in the South Island, along with the police and health sector. Passionate about developing shared visioning programmes, Mrs Wilson has been running Bats, an institute for learning with her husband Lab for several years. “We motivate and lead the development of strategies to enable people and organisations to take ownership of their own journey of learning and change. “But before that it is important to be crystal clear on why we are doing it, and in that every voice must be heard.”
News bites Rained out The popular Botany Summer BBQ, the free community event hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, was a wash out on Sunday. Mr Ross says that the family event, at the Old Flat Bush School Hall featuring fun rides, bouncy castle and face painting for kids, will be postponed until sometime next month. Watch this space for details on the dates.
Roots at Uxbridge In its first show of the year, Proudly Asian Theatre is bringing Roots to Howick - the first time its brough a show outside of central city suburbs. It follows the journey of one woman’s quest to find her familial identity in the cultural confusion of Singapore. Roots will be on at Uxbridge Arts & Culture on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 Feb. Safeswim warning Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach and Cockle Bay were among dozens of Auckland Beaches that were off limits this week due to poor water quality and wastewater overflow following torrential downpours. The wastewater overflow was detected by sensors according to an alert system on Auckland Council’s Safeswim website and swimmers were advised to stay out of the water. According to the Safeswim website, the water quality should be back to normal by today.

STUDENT/DOG LOVER Dannemora area We are training our 8 month old dog, to be well behaved when having visitors around as he is 37kg, we need someone who is confident with and loves dogs to knock on our door and visit us for about ½ hour -45minutes a few times per week until he has learnt this skill. SPORT AND LEISURE At 85 years old, Ron Johnson is quite the inspiration
T
he Pakuranga and Howick Realty owner claimed 13 medals at the recent Oceania Masters Athletics Championships in Dunedin. He competed in more events than anyone else at the championships and broke multiple New Zealand records with ease. The competition was his biggest medal haul to date and included 12 gold medals with one silver. Johnson started track and field at age 65 and particularly enjoys the decathlon and pentathlon events but says he’s not particularly exceptional at any one event these days – rather he’s consistent across the board. “I just try everything, I try every event. I’ll do every event from the 100m to the 10km. There’s not one thing I won’t try. I’ll do everything. I believe you don’t know what you can do until you try.”

Heimgartner leads championship heading into final BNT V8s round D
annemora local Andre Heimgartner will carry the championship lead into the final round of the BNT V8s Championship in March following the weekend’s penultimate round of the series. The Circuit Chris Amon round at Manfeild was held over 9-11 February and saw the 22-year-old Nissan Motorsport Supercar driver take out first, third and fifth in tricky conditions to secure second for the round and maintain his title lead. “Overall it was not a bad weekend, we showed lots of speed which was really positive and to be leading the championship ahead of the final round is something we are very happy about,” Heimgartner said. “The weather really played a part in the weekend’s proceedings. Practice went to plan for us, but we went into qualifying not having had any dry laps and we came away second fastest.
“In the first race we started on the outside and fell in behind Nick Ross going into turn one before managing to get past him going into turn three on the second lap,” he said. From there he was able to control the race and take the win, while extending the championship buffer. “Race two was a bit of a struggle as our tyres were not quite as good as those of everyone else, but we made the best of what we had,” he said. “We started second and put the pressure on at the start. Later though I would be overtaken and then soon after we had a torrential downpour which saw the race finish under safety car with me in third.” The final race was a “real interesting one”, he said. “I started second last thanks to the reverse grid and got a good start into turn one, going around the outside of nearly everyone to move to second position behind Jason Barg-

wanna. Then I was able to pass him going into the last corner of that lap and controlled the race before it
started raining again – this made it quite tricky on slick tyres but I was maintaining it before I was turned
around at turn one (the other driver received a post-race penalty for the contact).” After that contact he had some issues with the car so he made a trip to pit lane, which saw him bring the car home in fifth. “It is never fun being taken out while leading a race, but at the end of the day, we had a good weekend and, most importantly, we left Manfeild leading the points tally ahead of the final round at Hampton Downs next month (March 9-11).” Before then, Heimgartner has some other exciting racing exploits on his plate – namely, his first Supercars round as a driver with Nissan Motorsport. “I have my first test with Nissan Motorsport coming up this Friday, and I am really excited to get in the car and turn some laps ahead of the Adelaide 500 (March 1-4),” Heimgartner said.
Plucky Irvine takes on leadership challenge Olympics gives me the opportunity to compete at my level and even win medals,” Monique says. “I have made so many new friends from around the world, had lots of new experiences and have had the chance to travel in New Zealand and overseas.” When she’s not training and travelling with Special Olympics, Monique is kept busy with her part-time job at McDonalds and her volunteer work at Pakuranga Heights Primary School. She also enjoys taking long walks, doing puzzles, gardening and fishing. “Being selected to become a Global Messenger is a huge achievement and an amazing opportunity for these athletes,” said Julia Sanson, regional team leader for Special Olympics New Zealand. “Not only will they learn new and valuable leadership skills that will help them in their lives and careers, but they will also become the face of Special Olympics in their communities. “As an athlete-driven organisation it is important that our athletes have a voice in raising awareness and breaking down barriers which they and their peers often experience. They share their experiences and achievements gained through Special Olympics as a very strong and powerful voice of awareness and change.” The Class of 2018 started their leadership training yesterday in Wellington. Special Olympics New Zealand partners with The Training Practice and Attitude Pictures to deliver the fourworkshop programme, with workshops also taking place in May, August and October.

A local Special Olympics athlete is preparing to take on a new challenge, as part of a group of athletes set to become ambassadors for Special Olympics New Zealand, known as Global Messengers. Pakuranga’s Monique Irvine, who competes with Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga is one of six athletes who will take part in the Global Messenger training programme this year. The goal of the programme is to equip athletes with the skills to take up the role of ambassador for the organisation within their communities around the country. Following the training Monique will join a group of more than 70 Global Messengers who promote Special Olympics in New Zealand and support and inspire other athletes. Monique says being named a Global Messenger is a dream come true. She is looking forward to encouraging other people to be a part of the Special Olympics family, to try out different sports and make heaps of new friends. “I want to encourage them to get fit and healthy,” Monique says. “Special Olympics has a sport for every ability or interest. It helps us to become independent.” Monique (29) was first introduced to Special Olympics at the age of six. More than 20 years later the swimmer has been to four National Summer Games events, and represented New Zealand at the World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015, where she won a silver medal in backstroke. In both 2015 and 2016 Monique was named Disabled Athlete of the Year at the Howick-Pakuranga Sports Awards. “I love sports and Special

Big praise for future stars H
Arzan Todywalla (in blue and black strip) playing in the tournament.
ead Blues coach Tana Umaga was delighted with the contribution of his young players, and how the experienced players stood up in claiming the Brisbane Global Tens title. The Blues came from behind with two tries in the final three minutes to grab a 10-7 win over the Hurricanes on a wet second day of the tournament. The Blues trailed 7-0 until All Blacks Akira Ioane and George Moala made their mark. Ioane scored to close the gap before Moala produced a solo effort to force his way over with time up on the clock. It is the second major Tens tournament that the club has won, after claiming the World Club Tens in Singapore in 2014. Blues teenager Caleb Clarke was named player of the tournament and was top try scorer with five over the two days. Pakuranga United Rugby Club member (ex St Kents) Dalton Papalii featured

Big wins at futsal tournament New Zealand performed strongly at Australia’s largest futsal tournament recently. Around 120 teams from Oceania and Asia gathered to compete in the Craig Foster International Cup in the Gold Coast last month. St Kentigern College student Arzan Todywalla captained the East City U19 Boys side to victory against Galaxy FC, winning 2-1, however he was forced to do it from the sidelines after a serious injury forced him out of playing.
Despite not being able to play with his foot in a moonboot, Todywalla insisted on remaining with the team and supporting them from the sidelines. He also opted to join the U16 team and support them in their training session – a move which impressed coaches Bakr Al-Saudi and Declan Peach who offered him a role as assistant coach to the U16. East City won two gold cups in the tournament, the other by the U16 Boys side against Brisbane Elite, 6-4.
prominently in the competition. Umaga was especially pleased with the efforts of a number of players who have been replacements at the club, covering early season for the All Blacks and also injuries. “Some guys have been with us for two months, some two weeks, but they showed some real resilience to combine together. “The result is great, but some of the off-field stuff, and learning to follow through and win those critical moments was really pleasing for us this weekend.” The coach was also pleased with the contribution of former Blues great, Carlos Spencer who was the wildcard player in Brisbane. “Just having him around was great for our guys. He’s somebody who is revered in our club, so just that and some of the little bits he’s been passing onto our guys at training and he’s carry-
ing back, and doing that kind of job. “He always seems to have a knack of winning whenever he’s involved, so I’m sure the boys have taken something from him.” The Blues now quickly turn their attention back to Super Rugby and the final pre-season match against the Hurricanes at the Mahurangi Rugby Club, Warkworth A&P Showgrounds today with kick off at 4pm. “The win is good for this group. Now we take those learnings and get back to business for this week which is our last hit out before the Super Rugby season gets underway.”
