Recidivist thief busted January 4, a vehicle was allegedly stolen from a property in Golflands. The vehicle was spotted two days later in the Whitford area heading towards Beachlands. The Police Eagle Helicopter observed the vehicle’s driver allegedly dispose of a sack in a vacant plot of land in Whitford, before

driving to Beachlands. This sack was later recovered by a Police Dog Unit and contained a large bundle of mail – up to 200 letters – which was still in bundles from the distribution centre. The Eagle Helicopter continued to monitor the vehicle which parked at the Beachlands shops.

The driver then went into a store and allegedly took an item without paying for it. He was arrested shortly afterwards and had allegedly been carrying a knife, and items that could be used to break into vehicles. Police recovered the stolen vehicle, which contained a large amount

of stolen tools and items. The vehicle will now be returned to its owner. The man faces a number of charges including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, theft and possessing a knife in a public place and was due to appear in court on Friday.

hristopher Luxon meets at the Times office at around 12.45pm brandishing an 8-pack of sushi. He’s not eaten anything since breakfast at around 4.30am. The option of meeting at a cafe in Howick Village is dismissed (by me) as Luxon, who was only selected as the National Botany candidate for the 2020 election on November 4, is so well-recognised in these parts. And he still lives in Remuera. He later shares his connection to this very blue district. He attended Cockle Bay Primary, Howick Intermediate and Saint Kentigern College. And he has a brother here and many former Air NZ colleagues. We adjourn to our satellite office upstairs in Rice’s Mall where we remain undisturbed for an hour. He politely holds off from even touching the sushi until I suggest he begins eating while I catch up on my notetaking. The early morning rises are an integral part of his

approach to the day, a routine he says he observed well before Air NZ. “I’m an early riser. I scan all the newspapers and 200+ emails a day. I have always needed to be organised,” he says. “I’d be in the office usually around 7am and would usually be home for dinner at 8 and occasionally there’d be a few hours (working) at night…I like to work to a rhythm.” It’s a rhythm that’s seen him elevate Air NZ – which has 12,500 employees globally – to one of the most respected brands in the country. It is also one of the most successful airlines in the world. Luxon says he’s had a fascination for politics since he was 12 and has, for some time, devoted a year to focussing on world leaders. This year it’s Theodore Roosevelt. Before that it was Bobby Kennedy. “I was attracted to his vision but he had a ruthlessness to his politics.... but he cared deeply about people.” There was Jimmy Carter,

a nuclear submariner, who after his presidency, came back to run his peanut farm. “You learn something from leaders all the time. I read a lot and have done since I was a boy,” says Luxon, slowly but surely getting through his sushi. The point? “Business and politics – there’s a lot of transferrable skills.” He was 40 when he joined the national airline and became CEO at 41. He really is a high-flyer and he’s a problem solver. When he joined Air NZ, its international division was losing $2 million a week. How’s that for focus. He was at global consumer goods company Unilever for 18 years, 16 years posted abroad and became CEO in 2008 when he was 37. Transitioning from international business to politics though is something else surely at such a relatively young age. And he’s a rookie. The motivation for the conservative Christian has always been there. ➤➤Continued on Page 3

eputations pertaining to a new two-metre water polo pool at the aquatic and leisure centre at Barry Curtis park, a petition for permanent cameras to be installed at Eastern Beach and a proposal to create a water sport facility at Bucklands Beach were on the agenda at the inaugural meeting of the new

Howick Local Board. The chairperson Adele White, on behalf of Lorraine Neil, presented a petition containing 89 signatories asking to have permanent cameras installed on The Esplanade, Eastern Beach. The comments of the signatories in the main argued for the need of said cameras as a result of alleged on-going anti-social behaviour and

repeated incidents of theft and alcohol-related issues in the area. The board moved to request the Community Empowerment Unit to consider the petition. A deputation from Terry Logan on behalf of Mountfort Park Water Polo Club was heard. Mr Logan asked for consideration for a two-metre pool to be part of the new aquatic centre at Sir Barry

Curtis Park. Mr Logan believes the provision of a pool with adequate depth for waterpolo would be of significant advantage to the local community. Melissa Bland, principal of Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, addressed the board with concerns for pedestrian safety of school students. The school is pushing for a tem-

porary pedestrian bridge to be built on Flat Bush School Road while a decision is made on building a longterm full vehicle/pedestrian bridge. Currently students as young as five have to cross a narrow bridge with no footpaths. Howick Local Board will request Auckland Transport staff provide advice to the local board on feasibility.

It’s important that you give back if you have been successful,” Luxon says. “I do fundamentally believe New Zealand faces these unprecedented challenges.” As a business leader he has come to appreciate and comprehend much, including the impact of automation, working with Iwi, with mayors and councils, with tourism and property too. “Economically, socially, environmentally, they’re really the changes that will affect New Zealanders over the next 15-20 years.” He touches again on the transferability of strategies and such from companies, businesses and industries as very capably bringing a diversity of perspectives to our parliament. “I’m going in with a broad perspective. Some of these principles are very similar.” There’s been no shortage of unsolicited observations from all

and sundry suggesting he won’t be able to cut the mustard…handle the jandal in Kiwi vernacular. “Do you think the rigours of the job (in politics) will be too much for you? I’ve been asked that a few times,” says Luxon.

But he reckons what he calls extreme global business has set him up well. One hundred hours a week. Being in Argentina on a Monday and Tuesday then Tokyo and London immediately after. “The work was in multiple time zones – you’re

playing 3-D chess,” he says. Clearly, having highly-skilled crew helps. “I’ve always been a leader of a team of leaders. You get very organised with your time… you’ve also got to manage energy.” Coping with invasive media, particularly with a family, must be offputting? “The reality is our family is incredibly grounded; our children are incredibly independent. “We do have to think about the civility of politics.” He refers to Kiwi politicians who know each other well and who will engage in the cut-and-thrust in the

house compared to a very different style employed abroad, particularly in the US where there is tremendous polarity. “There’s no naiveté however attacks should be around ideas rather than personalities,” says Luxon. He’s getting right into the new job too with up to nine meetings a week including with the police, Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon, Abbess Manshin at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Flat Bush, Botany business owners and GETBA (the Greater East Tamaki Business Association), the Multicultural Centre and Indian Business Association. “They’re pretty special people,” he says. “I’m getting around seeing people doing amazing things. “My job is to demonstrate that I understand Botany and that I represent them very well in Wellington.” He underlines that by saying he doesn’t need the job, but wants to do it. “It’s not what I do. Who I am is more important.”

Our Times titles (Howick and Pakuranga Times & Botany and Ormiston Times) are changing their publication day from Thursday to Tuesday beginning next month. Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben says times continue to change and our papers have to follow suit. “We’re making this dramatic change because we believe that earlier in the week people have more time to enjoy and read our paper,” she said. “We’ve looked at the market and we realise that earlier in the week is a better time to publish. Car show numbers strong Club registrations for the 2020 Brit & Euro Classic Car Show have reached 60 clubs and 880 member cars in the

The Anglo-South African War or Boer War of 1899 to 1902 As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.

The excitement and patriotism of these men from mainly local farms who took their own horses and equipment, called “Rough Riders” only had two weeks of training, were used to handling guns and quickly trained their horses to accept gunfire. They included: 1. Trooper Vincent Hattaway, son of Captain Robert Hattaway. He was a farmer and joined the 4th Contingent. 2. Trooper Corporal John Ireland, a builder in Howick. He joined the 8th Contingent. 3. Trooper Nicholas Colin Stichbury, a baker, served in the 5th and 8th Contingents. He was later killed in World War I. 4. Trooper Corporal Carl WA Moller, dairy farmer of Fairview, Whitford Road. 5. Captain Donald Simson, Queens South African Medal with clasps. He joined as Lieutenant in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in 8th Contingent. He is buried in the Cath-

When peace was declared, the British flag was hoisted up the Howick School flagpole with cheers from students and Howick churches rang their bells. Bonfires were lit on the volcanic cones and services of thanksgiving were held. Auckland trams and buses were decorated with flags and ribbons. Peace medals were distributed to school students. Howick in Natal, South Africa, was a major convalescent camp. On May 17, 1902 Governor Lord Ranfurly visited Howick veterans and planted a tulip tree at Pakuranga School, now site of the ambulance station. New Zealand sent 6495 men, with 8000 horses and about 50 women as nurses and teachers. In all, 58 men were killed, 27 accidentally killed, 136 died of disease and 190 were wounded. New Zealand women made clothing, knitted pullovers for our troops and organised concerts and dances to raise funds for the war effort. Ranfurly Home in Mt Roskill was a memorial to those killed and a home for aged veterans opened in 1903. No Howick men or women were killed in this war. ■■ Alan La Roche Howick Historian

January 2020 heralds the commencement of an exciting new decade for Howick Village. In November 2022 we all will be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the first European settlement of Howick Village. I am sure this will be a truly memorable occasion. On Saturday February 1, we will have our first Summer Jazz Festival in Howick Village to coincide with the display of a number of the entries in our recent Door Art competition. For those of you not familiar with this competition, throughout 2019, HVA was supplying doors to artists who were interested in turning these doors into artistic masterpieces. Late last year the judging of these art pieces took place and several of those entered will be on display in Fencible Park on Picton Street. AMETI roadwork delays unacceptable Delays caused by lane closures for the AMETI/Eastern Busway construction have been unacceptable says Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. “Lane closures this week to complete major works have caused significant delays for commuters getting to work or getting home with reports of traffic taking an hour from Panmure to Pakuranga, a

distance of only 2km,” he says. “Auckland Transport (AT) is now warning bus passengers to expect significant delays for the remainder of the week, indicating that the traffic is worse than what they were even expecting. “Everyone has been expecting some delays caused by the construction of the new Eastern Busway, however these delays are made

worse by the fact that there are few other transport options in and out of east Auckland for commuters.” He says the good news is that these lane closures will be completed by January 20. “I will be raising this issue with AT and hope that significant disruption like this doesn’t occur again during the construction of the Eastern Busway.”

A 45-year high for new home consents

new homes in the latest year, the highest annual number since over 4000 new homes were consented in the mid-1970s. Across the 16 New Zealand regions, only three (Northland, Nelson, and Marlborough) consented slightly fewer new homes in the November 2019 year than in the previous year.

The number of new homes has been generally increasing since late 2011, coming off lows in 2009 and 2011 when fewer than 14,000 new homes were consented annually. Nationally, 13 per cent more new homes were consented in the November 2019 year compared with a year ago, reaching 14,866 in Auckland, 4176 in Waikato, and 5310 in Canterbury. Canterbury consented 14 per cent more new homes than in the previous November year. Although this level is below the 2014 peak, it is still higher than the level before earthquake rebuild activities. Local Iraqis call for peace T

wo Kiwi-Iraqis living in east Auckland are working to raise awareness of violence in their Middle Eastern homeland that’s resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. Hisham Anuaimy and Judy Siddawi want more New Zealanders to know what’s happening in Iraq and why. Unrest broke out in several parts of the country in October over unhappiness with the country’s leadership, high unemployment and a lack of basic services. International news media recently reported that more than 400 Iraqis have been killed by security forces with more than 17,000 injured. Siddawi, who lives in East Tamaki, says she feels helpless watching the violence unfold from so far away. “It is extremely sad that in 2019 things like this can happen with the innocent victims and the loss of human life.” Anuaimy and Siddawi recently met Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross to ask him to use his voice as their local MP to draw attention to the situation. Ross addressed questions on the protests in Iraq to Prime Minister

Regional fuel tax an unnecessary burden The Auckland regional fuel tax should be scrapped to alleviate some of the pain local motorists are feeling at the pump. A Members’ Bill I’ve put together would repeal this fuel tax and remove the ability for the Government to roll out such taxes across New Zealand. This tax added 11.5 cents a litre to the cost of petrol and diesel and every year it remains in place $150 million is being taken from motorists’ pockets. The Government has increased fuel taxes in Auckland by about 25 cents a litre overall, adding to the high cost of living faced by locals. This Bill would give MPs and the public the chance to properly debate the regional fuel tax’s merits. The rising cost of living is one of the biggest challenges Kiwis are facing right now. I hear a lot of feedback from people who are concerned about the rising cost of fuel. It was revealed this week that Auckland Council underspent its budget on new transport projects by more than $260 million in the first year the regional fuel tax was in place. The tax was implemented to allow the Council to boost its spending on projects to alleviate the city’s appalling traffic congestion and the revenue it’s collecting is not even being

The answer is by finding savings in its growing balance sheet, which has seen annual expenses increase by an average of $200 million in each of the past three years. Despite this, ratepayers aren’t seeing an associated increase in the range or quality of services the Council is delivering. Some people may even say the level of service delivery has been decreasing since the super-city Auckland Council was formed. The Prime Minister has said Kiwis are being “fleeced at the pump” and a Commerce Commission study into the retail fuel sector said consumers are paying too much for fuel. A public poll conducted after the regional fuel tax was introduced found 57 per cent of Aucklanders oppose it. The regional fuel tax is unfair and unnecessary. It’s hitting Aucklanders where it hurts and it should be scrapped.

Steph getting a kick out of being back By JIM BIRCHALL East Auckland footballer Steph Trowill has returned to field after an injury limited her appearances over the past five seasons. After getting inconclusive diagnosis from doctors, the source of her long-term injury was finally discovered to be an un-healed broken bone and tendon damage. Towards the end of 2018, Steph’s ankle was operated on again and after a lay-off, she was back doing what she does best. After initially gaining selection for the New Zealand Maori Women’s side in 2018, a team that thrashed transTasman rivals Australia Mariya Australian First Nation 5-0, Steph has once again been selected for the Maori XI in 2020, to play Mariya again on January 18, in Auckland. Steph spent five years in the Botany College first XI, made the New Zealand Secondary Schools team in 2013 and first played national league football for Auckland the same year. She is looking forward to the

He received the award from the former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis. CMS chief executive officer Russell Preston said the Sir Barry Curtis medal is bestowed upon the person who has, over a lengthy period of time, demonstrated a raft of qualities, skills and attributes that have not only contributed positively to their sport but to the Counties Manukau region as well. “The award is held in such high regard that it may not be awarded each year unless the recipient is considered to have achieved the criteria set,” said Preston. “The inaugural recipient of the Sir Barry Curtis medal was Ruben Wiki. Tonight’s recipient is in a lot of respects very much like Ruben Wiki. He grew up in South Auckland and, as such, experienced a lot of the hardships that young people in the rest of New Zealand are sheltered from. “He showed exceptional promise

at the local level that it was not long before he was bestowed with representative honours 1999. It took a mere three years when in 2002 he first represented NZ.” Mealamu has endured the rigours of sport at the domestic, national and international level for more than a decade. “He has shown that through his

own courage he has been an inspiration to his fellow athletes and an example by which young athletes in the future can only aspire to and hopefully accomplish what this man has done for this region and for his country,” said Preston. “He is extremely well respected by his fellow athletes both locally and internationally.”
