Dance showcase worthy of own tour

The annual Dance Showcase held at Pakurang College recently highlighted the incredible talent of the teachers and students at the College, who worked hard to put on an amazing show over two days. It was the third dance showcase for the college and the students involved in this year’s show really stepped up to the challenge. They worked incredibly hard and brought what was originally a small idea to life on the stage. “The dance students at Pakuranga College are very talented and I couldn’t be prouder of what they achieved.” said Natalie Sangster, Head of Dance. Pakuranga College’s Dance Showcase included all of the dance students in one dance piece together.

young couple are distraught that they cannot get back $37,777.50 they paid to the wrong bank account. Shirley Li thought she had transferred the amount owed to construction contractors’ and their bank account at Westpac Botany Junction a month ago. She made an error and the money went to someone else. That was on June 7 and now Li and her husband Ivan Soh are anxious that their money has still not been returned. In the meantime their painting and decorating company has had to pay the contractors so they are desperate to have their funds returned. However they’ve hit a brick wall. While their bank - ASB - has been trying hard to have the funds

returned, Westpac doesn’t seem to want to know, she said. A Westpac spokesman told the Times that Westpac NZ does not comment on its customers for privacy reasons. “However, in terms of general advice, in the event of a mistaken funds transfer, a bank does not have the right to withdraw money from a customer’s account without the consent of the customer,” the bank said. “It is a standard industry process that a person wanting to reverse an electronic funds transfer should talk to their own bank in the first instance.” Li said she did that as soon as she discovered her error. She made the transfer at around 10.30am. At 7pm her client called saying they hadn’t received the payment. “I immediately called ASB to make a direct

debit recovery,” she said. “ASB asked me to call Westpac to get them to hold onto the money but customer services said they couldn’t hold onto the funds. “When money goes into someone’s account, Ivan Soh it’s their money.” She was told to “just leave it for the recovery team to sort out” and was calling Westpac every day. Meanwhile after eight days ASB declared it could not recover the money. “Westpac said it’s not their problem. Westpac is not showing any responsibility. They are not doing their job. It’s horrible,” said Li. In frustration she has also been to the police to assist with recovery of the funds. While police

were sympathetic, the investigation appears unlikely to speed up the return of the money. Police could not confirm they were looking into the matter. “In general, police do not respond to requests which seek to confirm whether a specific individual or a specific organisation is under police investigation, or whether specific individuals have made complaints to police,” a spokesperson said. The Times also contacted the Banking Ombudsman’s office. Tina Mitchell, the Deputy Banking Ombudsman – Prevention – said it cannot comment on individual cases. “Usually it’s about sorting out between the banks but that can be a bit tricky,” she said.

“Anyone can come to us – we’ll do whatever we can to help.” She pointed to their website guide. “As a general rule, banks can reverse a payment made in error only with the consent of the person who received it,” the site said. “Your bank and the recipient’s bank will need to co-operate to try to recover the payment. This usually involves the recipient’s bank contacting the account holder to ask his or her permission to reverse the transaction. If the recipient refuses, your only option is to take up the matter directly yourself. However, the bank’s responsibility to protect the privacy of the recipient’s contact details may prove an initial stumbling block. “You may wish to take court action if the recipient won’t return the money.”

“Jacqui is very modest about her work and doesn’t see how special she is,” says kindergarten parent Carrie Harman, “but we see it very differently. attended the meeting at the Pakuranga Bowling Club on Tuesday evening. The meeting that was well moderated by Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga had a large turnout from

home owners in Cockle Bay, Glenmore Road and Angelo Ave catchments, as well as Cheriton Road, Mellons Bay and Gossamer Drive—areas severely affected by a spate of storms and floods this

year—on January 4, April 11 and June 3. “On June 3 there was a record rainfall where Howick and Pakuranga received most of the rainfall,” said Mr Skelton from Healthy Waters, the department responsible for stormwater infrastructure. “The intensity of 30mm in 25 minutes is up to 25 to 50 year storm event for some areas which caused some serious damage. “We have been working extensively in these areas to engineer solutions but these are short term. For long term solutions it takes long to plan.”

Many in the room demanded that they get value for the rates they pay. While Cr Stewart was disappointed that Auckland Transport failed to show up at the meeting, she was all praise for the work that Healthy Waters has been doing, working round-theclock to help residents. She said she will arrange for one-on-one meetings with residents from every catchment affected by the floods. “We suggest you bring along photographs and video footage that will give Healthy Waters a bigger picture.”

Performance pay in shambles: First Union

News bites Pedestrian hit by car The Serious Crash Unit is investigating after a man was hit by a car outside a party in Casuarina Rd, Half Moon Bay around 10:30pm on Saturday night. The man was transported to Auckland Hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the vehicle is assisting Police with their enquiries.

ore than 50 employees of Farmers retail stores of Botany, Pakuranga, Manukau and Papakura staged a walk out from the stores last Thursday. They protested at the crossroads outside Pak’nSave, Botany. The beauty, sales and service assistants were part of the strike action nationwide. Workers had decided to move from pickets to strike action in response to failed negotiations. Protesting against low pay and unfair pay reviews, workers at the department stores around the country went on strike from one to five hours in the afternoon. Sarah Thompson organiser of the First Union strike in Botany told the Times: “If you look around, it’s good to know that the majority are women here. And they have never done this before. “They are too busy looking after their families and don’t have time for this. It must be pretty serious for them to pick up a picket. “The performance pay is in shambles. It’s counter intui-

tive. Employees get C grades even though the clients have complimented them for their customer service. “This doesn’t encourage them to work hard.” Ms Thompson claims that workers get low grades just so that their employers don’t have to pay them more.

Farmers’ workers typically start on a near minimum wage of $16.50 an hour, she says. “Currently 80 per cent of Farmers’ workers who belong to First Union are paid less than the living wage. “For most, the pay scale ends around $17.50 with raises only available through perfor-

mance pay reviews. “Such an iconic New Zealand brand as Farmers should be doing better. We hope to resolve the issue and end the performance pay scheme. “There should be an increase in pay rates so that their families have enough to thrive on and not just survive.”

Half Moon Bay ferry pier wins award Auckland Transport’s (AT) Half Moon Bay ferry pier has won an engineering award. The ferry pier won the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) New Zealand Excellence Awards – Best Public Works Project under $5 million. Opened last year, the pier plays a pivotal role as a transport hub for the recently rolled out bus network for east Auckland. The Howick Local Board contributed $2.5 million from its transport capital fund for the project. Chair David Collings says: “We’re really proud of this, as the board gave strong input into the project which has improved the experience for commuters.

“This award represents the significant investment in a connected public transport systems for Auckland, making it easier for people to switch between ferries and buses to get around the city.” AT’s public transport development manager Scott Keene says: “The award is a recognition of the innovation, skill and dedication within AT, its consultants, contractors and suppliers who have gone above and beyond in constructing the Half Moon Bay ferry pier.” Construction is underway on the bus interchange at the end of Ara-Tai to support the better integration of ferry and bus services. New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded the following grants in the Auckland region in June. Coastguard Maraetai receives $20,000 towards the refit of a rescue boat while Brookby School’s Board of Trustees gets $20,000 for an outdoor roof canopy and resurfacing of the multi-court. Among the gaming venues that contributed to these grants are Barrel Inn in Howick and Xtreme Botany at Northpark.

Howick Local Board Chair David Collings is calling for patience with Auckland’s wet winter weather starting to cause headaches for contractors unable to mow sodden turf across the local board area. “People will have started to notice this already and I want to assure the community that the local board is keeping on top of this issue,” Mr Collings said.

By-Election nominations close soon The Nominations for the Howick Ward byelection will close on Wednesday July 18 at 12pm. The settlers’ first houses We continue our series with historian and author Alan La Roche marking the 170th anniversary of the area

T

he first houses of the Howick settlers were leaky, cheerless raupo whares, often called “raupoos”. The British call similar reeds bulrushes. The long slender leaves were cut and gathered from streams or swampy ground such as on the Howick Domain, Uxbridge or Mellons Bay Streams. The raupo is dried and bound tightly into bundles, then tied with harakeke [NZ flax] rope or mangemange fern. Dried nikau palm leaves were placed over these bundles on the roof held down by horizontal logs as purlins. Maori had used these materials for centuries. Raupo is an excellent insulator containing many air-cells making it warm in winter and

built his own raupo in Howick village as he was desperate to get his family, of a wife and five daughters, suitably housed. They lived in their raupoo for over two years. Some larger families made extensions to their raupoos. Some had 10 children or more and children were expected to top-and tail, four in a bed - no wriggling or kicking! Some raupoos had a wooden chimney with a sod firebox to reduce the risk of catching fire. Tawa and rewarewa in a fire gave little smoke and no sparks which was especially useful in bad weather when a fire in the centre of the cottage floor was lit instead of an outside fire. Smoke used to seep out through the roof keeping mosquitos

cooler in summer. Windows were of glass or oiled sail-cloth to keep out the weather. After living several years in a leaky raupoo with an earth floor which was often mud, they were reluctant to move into an unlined clinker-built kauri cottage as the newly-cut boards shrank on drying, they said the wooden cottages were draughty,

but raupoos were snug. The first raupos cost about two pounds to build but since many Howick Fencible families were complaining that they had been promised in England “a two roomed cottage ready for them on arrival”, the Government agreed to pay for most of the 180 raupoos in Howick in 1848. away. Care was needed as raupoos were highly flammable. Raupoos attracted fleas and rats along with cockroaches and stink beetles which drop out onto your bed or meal if a candle is lit. Some put sheeting in the ceiling to catch them. Some advised families to put raincoats over their bed if it looked like rain. In July 1848 it snowed in Howick, although the snow soon melted but it was cold and wet. After 1848 all “Fencibles” (now called settlers) were given £15 and told to build their own raupoos as the officers said “they give good and comfortable accommodation”. Eventually these men built their own wooden cottages on their acre allotments. The British Ordinance Board in England estimated a single cottage of 504 square feet for each Fencible family would cost between £25 and £50 pounds to build. But prices had escalated and the Auckland Royal Engineers estimate was £157. Governor Grey asked for a new design incorporating one chimney and two families sharing the double cottage of 264 square feet, saving £30. Maori labourers assisted the Royal Engineer supervisors. Carpenters were in short supply and were demanding higher wages than in Britain. All Fencibles cottages were built of pitsawn Kauri. The bricks for chimneys were made locally at Waipaparoa-Howick Beach. Single unit cottages were generally built for sergeants, strategically placed on corner sections. They were almost twice the size of a private’s cottage. Only one Fencible cottage remains in Howick today. However there are nine fully restored original Fencible cottages in the Howick Historical Village, showing their durability after almost 170 years! Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

Recently I took part in Volunteers Week, which took place from June 17-23 and served as a chance to MP for Pakuranga acknowledge and thank everyone who volunteers their time every day to help those in need. Local organisations that rely on volunteers often do some of the most important work, and I spent a day during Volunteers Week to visit a few of these groups in Pakuranga to say thank you on behalf of our community. Among those I visited were the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), the Pakuranga Budgeting Service, the Salvation Army Family Store, Totara Hospice Shop, the Cancer Society PreLoved Boutique, and the St John Opportunity Shop. All of these groups provide an invaluable service and make a noticeable difference in the lives of so many who live here, and without the hard work of volunteers, they would struggle to fulfil their purpose. In my role as the local Member of Parliament I work closely with many of these groups, particularly the CAB and Pakuranga Budgeting Service, as we often come together to help an individual or family in need. It’s no exaggeration to say my job would be a lot harder without their dedication to assisting anyone who asks for help. I was also privileged to be named as Patron of the Howick Pakuranga Community Patrol, an organisation that works closely with New Zealand Police to help keep our communities safe, which is something I am very proud to be involved in. Many of you will no doubt have received help or support from one of these organisations or the many others who work tirelessly around Pakuranga. I know you will all join me in saying a big thank you to our volunteers and our volunteer organisations, and I encourage you all to give some of your time over the year in support of them to ensure they are able to continue serving our community. Anti-drone ‘missile system’ at school

S

tudents at a local primary school have been trying to take down a pesky drone which has been buzzing the school. Acting principal Paul Crowhurst said in May in a school newsletter: “In recent weeks we have encountered the roving presence of a high-spec drone around school. “As such, I commissioned, with the blessing of the Civil Aviation Authority, Cockle Bay School’s first ever anti-drone defence system. “Although this shower of soccer and rugby balls has been unsuccessful at bringing said drone down to earth, it has seemed to stop the visits during school hours.” However, close to the end of the May, the school had more sightings over the school outside of school hours.

Cockle Bay School has reported multiple sightings of a drone over the grounds. Photo supplied

“The police and CAA have been contacted as flying drones over private property is not lawful,” Mr Crowhurst. “The police are looking into the matter. It is clear that the drone is being launched somewhere between Cockle Bay School and the coast, we would be most

appreciative of any information on who is flying this drone or where it is being launched from.” Police confirmed to the Times they have made enquiries however have been unable to identify the origin of the drone and have since had no further reports.

support on their ‘wonder wall’. “I find it all very moving” said Tracey Fox. “We’ve had people in their ‘90s writing beautiful messages of support, along with children as young as three drawing pictures.” Clearly the breadth and depth of support runs across generations, the team received hundreds of messages on their wall and on their Facebook page. Claire Thompson has been blown away by the level of interest; “It’s been great talking to so many people, so many have said they just weren’t aware that the fight was still going on!” MP Simeon Brown and his wife, along with Howick’s very own town crier Jim Donald have stopped by to chat with the group and show their support. They will then be taking the ‘wonder wall’ to be displayed at the commission hearing on the 16th. “It’s a great way to show the commission that so many people are concerned and really care about this”, said Brooke Williams.

“Weather permitting, the Stockade Hill Defencibles will be out again this coming Saturday and would love for everyone to come down and add their messages to the amazing wonder wall,” said Fox. Meanwhile, Andries Popping, deputy chair of the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association, said it was great to see young Howickians last Saturday morning writing messages of support He said four large boards have already been filled with messages to Auckland Council asking them to preserve Stockade Hills Views for all to enjoy. The commissioners and council officers will be the only ones able to speak at Monday’s hearing. “Save Stockade Hills Views campaigners are hoping for a large turnout to show the Commissioners how much Howickians young and old, care about Stockade Hill,” he said. ■■ Monday’s final hearing is at 9.30am on July 16 at Fencible Lounge at Howick Library.

The long-standing fight to save Stockade Hill views is nearing its end – the final hearing is next Monday July 16. But the Stockade Hill Defencibles, a small group of locals, aren’t going down without one final fight. The group - Andrew Laing, Brooke Williams, Tracey Fox, Claire Thompson, Jane Moody, Leigh Hodgetts and Ron Fielding - started out as a humble pub quiz team but have quickly become Picton Street’s most popular campaigners. Like many who know and love Howick village, they were shocked to find out that the 360-degree views around Stockade Hill were still under threat and that the process of allowing high-density development to practically surround the landmark was still very much on the cards. They decided to take to social media to let people know what was happening. The Defencibles started the ‘Save Stockade Hill Views’ Facebook page which rapidly gained more than 700 followers with posts on the page reaching in excess of 13,000 people in the area. They have even attracted messages of support from as far away as California. A regular feature on the page is the weekly radio show playlist request. Andrew Laing hosts a Thursday evening Road Show on Howick’s local radio station East FM and has been playing songs suggested by their Facebook followers all month. The group have also ‘taken it to the streets’ every Saturday outside helloworld on Picton Street, along with representatives from the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association. They’ve been chatting with locals, distributing posters and leaflets and encouraging anyone who can’t attend the hearing to put up a message of

In reply to Celia Martin and David Mitchell’s letters (Times, June 21) re them grieving over the demise of supermarket single use plastic bags. I applaud the stand that supermarkets are taking by banning plastic bags and making food trays recyclable etc. Some 7 billion kilos of garbage and 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris is thrown into our oceans each year. Four billion plastic micro fibres per square kilometre litter the deep sea and shoppers use approx. 5 billion single use plastic bags each year, these then discarded into the oceans and landfills, and, as these plastic bags can take 20 years+ to decompose, plastic bottles can take up to 450 years to decompose, not to mention the plastic fishing line that can take up to 600 years to fully decompose, this creates a catastrophic endless problem.

One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die each year from injesting plastic rubbish, thoughtlessly discarded into our natural world, often thinking they are eating jelly fish which is one of their primary sources of food. Recycle as much as you can, compost food scraps and use compostable bin liners made from corn starch that compost down within 90 days. It is not expensive. Or you can dig a small trench in between rows in the vege garden, put the compostable food scraps in and when full, cover with soil, and next year shift the planting of the new veges to over the trench and start a new trench between the new rows. Great for the soil and worms. I accept it is not easy to make the change because it requires some thought and effort but, if we all try our best to adapt, we

Charter schools

For doubters of charter schools, Sweden has 50 per cent of its upper secondary schools run as charter schools and is ranked 9 in world rankings. On the same scale, NZ is ranked 12 and the compiler of the rankings cited our primary schools as the main area of concern. The overall view was that charter schools ( particularly successful with under-privileged children) can only be as good as the leadership running them, but you could say the same about state schools.

Play dumb, play dirty, play false Enter a claustrophobic world in which sexual betrayal combines with insanity and the horrific cost of payback, when Michael Hurst is let loose on one of the most intense tragedies ever written The Changeling, Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s wild masterpiece Sometimes the one you love isn’t the one you want. Beatrice hires a hit man to murder her fiancé, only to become trapped in a vortex of lust and deceit. Once the deed is done, Beatrice discovers it’s not money or jewels that her hit man wants as his reward but something far more precious. We live in an experiential age, where audiences are hungry for experiences that provide a deeper level of participation and entertainment. In line with this trend, Hurst creates a theatrical encounter that explores proximity, intimacy and high-octane acting at close quarters - an experience that can’t be downloaded. Filled with strikingly modern

psychological insights, The Changeling, adapted and directed by Michael Hurst features one of the theatre’s most complex and intriguing partnerships. Beatrice and her disfigured hitman, the ironically named De Flores, transgress all moral limits. The pact they enter into, driven both by physical loathing and erotic frustration, unites them in a corrupt, collusive and adulterous intimacy. Blurring the boundaries between right and wrong, actors Anthea Freya Hill (PopUp Globe, Guys & Dolls) and Mel Odedra (Tea, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) will collude in this production, reminding audiences of the thin line between victim and monster. In response to the awesome success of the Pop Up Globe, which has drawn audiences away from the Auckland Summer Shakespeare’s annual activation, challenging its history of 55 years and recently forcing it into recess,

The Changeling is filled with strikingly modern psychological Photo supplied insights.

Hurst and the Auckland Summer Shakespeare Trust have repositioned themselves to create this ferociously intimate Winter season. Widely acknowledged as one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of Shakespeare, Hurst is also a Jacobean Tragedy fanatic, having directed or acted in productions of Tis Pity She’s a Whore, The Duchess of Malfi, The Revenger’s Tragedy and one other previous production of The Changeling in 1990. ■ Uxbridge Theatre Howick ■ August 2&3, 7:30pm ■ Duration: 80 minutes ■ #thechangeling2018

Seed of contentment or chaos Seed follows four women as they try to get pregnant, stay pregnant or become un-pregnant – the dilemmas of modern reproduction. IVF isn’t foolproof and IUDs aren’t failsafe. iPhones come with ovulation apps and being married doesn’t mean you have to breed. This is about the horror some woman experience when they learn they’re pregnant, even while in loving relationships, and about fancy fertility clinics that prey on people’s primal urge to replicate — in the hope of cementing the bond with their partner in a way a ring, a house or a promise may not. A truly contemporary, hilarious and smart look at modern reproduction and female friendship, Seed is a drama that’ll make you laugh, or a comedy that’ll make you cry. How far would you go to get a life? Find out in the play directed by Kerryn Palmer.

ract and macular degeneration. Many eye problems can develop without warning and progress with no symptoms. Early on, you might not notice any change in your vision. However, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, as well as health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be detected earlier with a scanning of the retina. “With earlier assessment a treatment mode can be made available prior to the additional damage to the eye,” says the much experienced optometrist who has seen generations of patients, which is great for assessing eye diseases that can be transmitted among family members. If you are looking for a skilled, caring and much experienced optometrist for achieving optimum eye health and vision this is the address you can head to. The centrally located optometrist outside of Pakuranga mall has plenty of parking, literally outside the front door. This is great for those with mobility issues, or in a wheelchair.

While most chain optometrists offer a bundle of standard brand names to choose from, Lowes Taaffe and Bhikoo located at Pakuranga Plaza, offers a higher choice of eye wear. “We have frames and lenses to suit each individual need and not just 80 per cent of the population. Not having a corporate head office decide on a handful of brand names, makes a big difference. Conveniently located on the outside of Pakuranga Plaza, Lowes Taaffe and Bhikoo also offer multifocal contact lenses apart from soft and disposable contact lenses. “It’s a more difficult lens to fit,” he says about the multifocal lens. “We also do Gas Permeable lenses commonly known as Hard lenses. Fox, who turned pro in 2012, collected his biggest European Tour prize at the weekend of Euro 665,614 - or $1.142 million. Fox, 31, had an eight-foot putt on the 18th green at Ballyliffin Golf Club that would have handed him victory in the fourth Rolex Series event of the season but saw it just miss on the high side, www.europeantour. com reported. Another trip up the 18th followed, with Russell Knox holing a 40-footer almost identical to the putt that had got him into the play-off for a birdie and a second European title. The pair had had to go to a play-off after both finishing on 14 under. That left Fox still searching for his maiden win but he was pleased to nail his passage to the season’s third Major Championship, having done the same 12

Khatau picks up women’s award F

ormer Macleans College student Sara Khatau has won the prestigious Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award. The University of Auckland student, who is currently studying Law and Arts with a major in International Relations, Politics and Sociology, will be presented with the award/scholarship of $1500 at the Zonta Club of east Auckland’s Annual Awards night. Nominated by the Zonta Club of East Auckland, Sara was also the recipient of the Zonta Year 12 Leadership Award in 2016. Sara says she is humbled and credits Gay Gallagher, a member of Zonta International who

pushed her to apply for it. The long list of service activities that contributed to the former Year 13 Prefect at Macleans receiving the international award include her involvement in Unicef Youth and NZ Model UN Forum; leader of the string Amnesty International Club and establishing a new group called LEAD (Liberate, Educate, Empower Adolescent Development) to increase youth engagement in societal issues. “There is lack of engagement among the youth in issues that affect our society and I saw a gap that needed to be filled in,” she says about the initiative. Sara also collaborated with a local organisation to host an event

aligned with `Find her Smile’, focussing on raising awareness of sex trafficking of young girls in Asia. Her involvement outside school involved a brush with politics as part of Simeon Brown’s electoral campaign. Sara represented the youth voice for the locals as well as a participant in Howick Youth Forum. That apart, Sara found time to be a Youthline volunteer and a youth leader in Global Volunteer Network raising funds for children in Vietnam. The young volunteer for Salvation Army says that it is important to find causes you are passionate about and align to them. “I learnt a lot more from the

■ Girls Football: Early last term the 1st XI girls football team had a play-off game against Diocesan (an Auckland premier team) for a place in the Lotto National Championships. This is for the top 32 teams in the country. Howick won this game, 3-1, thus qualifying for the first time in 30 years. The girls played some excellent football, and for the year 13s, this is the result of four years of hard work and commitment to Howick College. The tournament takes place during week 7 of term 3.

community activities than in the classroom, and it was so much fun,” says Sara who hopes to work for the UN someday. The Young Women in Public Affairs Programme was established by Zonta International to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a commitment to the volunteer sector, volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

■ Girls Rugby: Four Howick girls have been selected for the Auckland U15 Girls’ Rugby team - Dayna Moon, Abby Lockhart, Paige Makiri and Kylah Oliver. They will be competing in the Northern Region Tournament today. ■ Champion Weightlifter: Avery Fesolai continues to win titles in weightlifting. He recently brought three medals home from the Oceania Olympic Weightlifting competition in Noumea – Gold U55kg Youth / Silver U56kh Junior / Silver U56kg Senior. Avery was named our Junior Sportsperson of the Year in 2017.

New director of coaching at HPCC Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club has announced stalwart and club ‘legend’ Alan Hunt will lead their coaching team. With his stellar coaching experience, Hunt will also coach the Premiers, the club says. Hunt was selected for the Premiers in 1979-80 and played regularly until 1994-95. He led the Premiers to the Two Day Championship in 1993-4 and also was also a regular selection for Auckland

between 1981-82 and 1992-93. He scored 2069 first class runs with a highest score of 102. Auckland Cricket thought so highly of Hunt that he was granted a Benefit Year in recognition Alan Hunt of his 10 years’ service in the representative side and 104 matches. He has successfully coached

at Provincial A level with Auckland and Northern Districts and, upon moving to Central Districts, helped steer the province to two national titles. Since that time he has been involved in a number of different roles and has spent the last few years as Sacred Heart College’s coaching director. Hunt is very clear about

how he sees his role with the Howick Pakuranga Premier side. “The challenge of this job is to be able to maintain their level of performance and build on it,” he says. “That’s a very hard ask when the Premiers are defending Hedley Howarth Trophy champions! The Director of Coaching’s role is about making sure we deliver appropriate programmes to the appropriate age groups in a professional manner.”

■ NZ Aerobics representative: Sarah Spargo is once again heading off to Phoenix this month as part of the New Zealand team competing in the ANAC international aerobics competition. She has represented NZ for several years. In 2017 she placed 9th in a field of 48 competitors.

Laumape the toughest S

urely the toughest back in world rugby to tackle is juggernaut Ngani Laumape who scored four stunning tries in the Hurricanes 42-24 triumph against the Blues in Wellington last weekend. They were reminiscent of the storming runs once associated with the late Jonah Lomu and Julian Savea, two wings who were unstoppable when at their prime. Yet with the All Black selectors preferring injury prone 32-year-old Sonny Bill Willilams as their starting second-five, Laumape struggles for game time in test rugby. Having scored 15 tries in Super Rugby last year, that remains a mystery, especially when his ability to crash over the advantage line

with hard, straight running offers his forwards quick recycled ball. True, it helps having creative players like PJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett inside him. But Laumape’s fearless running makes him a huge asset to any team whether he wears the No 12 or 13 jersey. At 27 years of age, 1.78m tall and tipping the scales at 97kg, the muscular Laumape is dwarfed by Williams’ 1.93m and 108kg. However he is a more bruising attacker than the champion ball distributor who has had a rotten run of injuries since the 2016 Rio Olympics. Meanwhile the Blues can count themselves lucky that Rieko and Akira Ioane have remained loyal to them rather than head off to a more successful franchise.

That is particularly true of 23-year-old Akira who, at 1.94m and 113kg, is an incredibly-gifted athlete awaiting a decent forward coach to make him the great, low slung No 8 that Counties-bred All Black captain Kieran Read became upon moving to Canterbury and the Crusaders. Luke Whitelock filled the No 8 berth in the injured Read’s absence in the three-test series against France because of his strong work ethic, solid defence and lineout prowess. But as an attacking player he’s not in Akira’s class. Meanwhile Blues coach Tana Umaga must be wondering at the wisdom of playing Rieko Ioane at second-five against wrecking ball Laumape after the latter stormed to

Agnew’s Angle

his four tries. Admittedly the speedy Rieko did score two tries, but as the world’s best left wing he looked out of position. If Umaga wants to continue to experiment with him next season centre should provide more space in which to utilise his speed. With just one game to play against the table-topping Crusaders it has been another bitterly disappointing year for a Blues team that continues to lack cohesion. With the Crusaders trouncing the gallant Highlanders 45-22 at Christchurch, Richie Mo’unga completed a hat-trick by outplaying the three best first-fives in the land, having shaded Beauden Barrett and Damien McKenzie earlier.

This time it was Lima Sopoaga who remains a very good player. As a general who reads the game so well, Mo’unga also has some of the attacking flair that makes Barrett and McKenzie so exciting. Although the All Black selectors have tremendous backline depth to choose from for the Rugby Championship, injuries have thinned their forward options. With their top eighth all suffering injuries at different stages this season, they will be hoping Kieran Read stays sound following back surgery. Ditto champion lock Brodie Retallick whose shoulder injury sidelined him for six weeks. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Hunter wins 100m freestyle crown Carina Doyle and Daniel Hunter won the coveted blue ribbon 100m freestyle titles on the final night of the 2018 Aon New Zealand Open Championships. Commonwealth Games 2018 rep Doyle (North Shore), turned first at the halfway mark before the rest of the field charged in the final 25m on Friday. Doyle was first to the wall in 56.67s. Hunter (Howick Pakuranga), who won gold in the 50m final, was the hot favourite in the

longer sprint and showed his dominance by establishing half a body length lead in the first half of the race. In the closing stages it was 15-year-old Michael Pickett (North Shore) who started to close in on Hunter, eventually finishing second in 50.61s to Hunter’s 50.01s. Bayley Main (Howick Pakuranga) was third in 50.75s. Pickett’s time was also a new personal best and 15-years national age group record.

T

hink decadent glamour, pure opulence and a bit of a tease. For the first time, five of New Zealand’s top, multi-awardwinning burlesque artistes are coming together to dazzle the audience with their costumes and entertain them with hurly burly lampoonery at Uxbridge Arts and Culture. Mistress of ceremony and stand-up comedian Verity Johnson will introduce the tantalising titian-haired Sophia St Villier; New Zealand’s favourite burlesque duo Ballet School Dropouts; Lilly Loca known for putting the Va Va Voom into Vaundeville; sultry and seductive Trillion; and mesmerising Dahlia Dangerous. Howick resident Sophia, who has just returned to New Zealand after a nine year stint in the UK, will be performing two acts from her repertoire - La Vedette Anatomique and Fairy Queen in the upcoming show <ITALICS> Enchanté Cabaret. She says she is really excited about performing with a great representation of talented artistes in lavish costumes. Sophia, who has performed in London, Rome, Milan, Stockholm and toured with a burlesque production company in Germany for almost 18 months, says her favourite part of a show is the energy she shares with the audience. “It’s pure magic!” Talking about the bump n’grind workshops she hosted in the UK, she says that she loves teaching, “especially when it is so much fun for people to learn about the history of burlesque in 1950s”. “Those days they would have

uniformed police sitting in the front row so that they could count the number of times they moved their hips. It was considered amoral if you moved your hips more than four times!” Sophia says that she often finds that for most shows more than 75 per cent of the people in the audience are women. “They absolutely love it when we teach them how to walk with their shoulders back in a workshop. It’s almost like they have the permission to take up all of the space on stage. Besides, women love the glamour of wearing elaborate costumes of feathers and rhinestone. Everything is heightened and sensual and the moves come with working with your own strength.” A great fan of femme fatale

and tough broads she says, “Life is a cabaret.” “The costumes are quite an investment, and I remember the times when I was doing burlesque on a budget. When I first moved to the UK, the NZ dollar was very week and I’d often do crepe paper costumes that I’d tear off on stage,” she says. Having come a long way, the svelte mother of an 18-month old baby says that she can’t wait for the curtains to go up on Enchanté Cabaret, curated by multi-award-winning burlesque artist and performance art teacher Natalie Hugill.

In the last week there has been at least three incidents raised in the media about inadequate behaviour from property managers around the country, which has caused the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) to reiterate its call for the Government to regulate the property management industry. One incident in Auckland saw tenants find maggots under their carpet; another in Christchurch saw a mother fight to get curtains in her rental home for half a year, despite the fact she had a chronically ill daughter and a son with asthma; and the third incident saw a group of nine students in Dunedin take legal action over toxic mould. Bindi Nowell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Since 2009, property managers have not been regulated which is why it is of great concern when we hear of incidents highlighted in the media about property managers not living up to consumers’ expectations. With no regulations in place it means that anyone can become a property manager and that there is no consistency across the industry – unless the property manager is also a licensed real estate agent. “Frighteningly the lack of

regulations also means there are no protections in place such as holding money in a trust account, having the appropriate insurance in place to operate in the industry, having a dispute resolution process in place or regulatory compliance being adhered to,” points out Norwell. “While there are many fantastic property managers out there who have high ethical standards and adhere to the REINZ Code of Agency Practice, this is constantly being undermined by others who do not have the same standards of ethics as has been highlighted in the media. This means that renters – who include some of our more vulnerable members of society – can potentially be taken advantage of, when in fact, we should be looking after renters and supporting them,” continues Norwell. “Whilst the Government is currently reviewing proposals to ban letting fees for tenants, if it really wants to help renters, it should regulate the property management industry as part of its wider review of the Residential Tenancies Amendment Act essentially putting the ambulance at the top of the cliff,” she says.

Grafton tops list of fastest rising spots In third place, was Northcote Point with the median price for the six months ending March 2018 showing an increase of 19.2 per cent when compared to the same period last year, from $1,147,000 to $1,367,500 – a $220,500 increase. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “The top 5 of Auckland’s fastest rising suburbs all have a number of factors in common – they are all close to the CBD, have good motorway access and public transport links, they have a number of entertainment or dining options available to them and they also have access to green spaces. “Time and time again, we hear from agents that proximity to the CBD is becoming increasingly important as people want to spend less time sitting in their car driving to work – this view is even more prevalent

now that the Fuel Tax has been implemented. What is interesting though is that apartments are proving more popular than ever in these established areas, with people prepared to sacrifice space for the gains made in travel time,” she continues. “However, what makes Grafton and Mt Eden clearly stand out from the other ‘top 10’ fastest rising suburbs in Auckland is the school zones they offer. Both Grafton and Mt Eden fall into Auckland’s very popular Grammar Zone. With education continuing to be a key purchasing decision, this is adding to the price that people are prepared to pay to live in these areas,” concludes Norwell. In sharp contrast, the median for Auckland over the same period decreased by 0.9 per cent from $863,000 to $855,000.
