The lovely legacy of Yvonne Featherstone
Yvonne Featherstone’s 25 year career in New Zealand customs saw her make history as the first uniformed female customs officer in the country. In May, Yvonne passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service to others. By THERESE HENKIN
L
es Featherstone lost the love of his life this year. And New Zealand lost a pioneer for women in the workforce. Yvonne Featherstone made history in 1973 as the country's first uniformed female customs officer, paving the way for women to make their mark in New Zealand customs. When Yvonne first began working at Auckland Airport in 1970, a male customs officer could not search a female suspect so female police officers would do a search if available. At the time, Yvonne was working
as a customs clerk, and was asked if she would do the searches when required. It wasn’t long before the customs department decided they needed full time female customs officers. Yvonne was the first to accept the job, a historic appointment that would be the start of many firsts for the Pakuranga local. She was joined by Noelene Chamberlain and Audrey Barnet. Yvonne later processed the first passenger through the new international terminal and became the first female investigations officer in Customs. “She was extraordinary. She loved
her work and I am so proud of her,” says husband Les, who also worked at the airport. He was chief fire officer in the Crash Fire Department. Les says the key to Yvonne’s success was that she always went the extra mile. He said one day when she was working on a surveillance job for an investigation, she was in the car watching a house when the occupant came out. “She had to embrace her work mate to make it look like a courting couple. Good thing I’m not the jealous type,” Les laughs. Les was his wife’s greatest supporter. The pair met in Scotland
in 1956. “I offered her a ride. I was also giving another guy a ride so I decided to drop him off first so I would get a few minutes alone with her,” Les smiles. Five weeks later Les proposed to Yvonne in a bright red Rolls Royce fire engine and the couple wed in an intimate ceremony on March 6, 1956. It was the beginning of a love story that would span more than six decades. They returned to England together to start their family. “I loved her from the minute I met her and I knew she was the one for me,” he says. Eventually the pair moved to New
Zealand for GBP 680. Their rent at the time cost them around $6.80 a week for a home in Mangere. This was when Yvonne went back to work. She started out as a sales officer for the UEB before moving on to work for the airport because it was one of few places that offered her equal pay. She remained at the airport for 25 years. After she retired, Yvonne became a foundation member of the Blue Coats hospitality ambassadors alongside Les. She spent 11 years in that role. ➤ Turn to Page 3

for lifetimes to come. A fan of country music since she was a youngster, Kylie has been making a scene in the country music world performing across countless stages and giving the American-born music a run for its money. Her career spans more than 15 years and includes several awards across the Australasia country scene including the coveted Maton Talent Search and the TransTasman Entertainer of the Year Award. While country has always been a passion of Kylie’s, it wasn’t until she turned 17 that she decided it was the genre for her. “When I turned 17 I got really into singing and I’ve been doing it every weekend, week night, anytime I can,” she says. Graduating from the College of Country Music in Tamworth in Australia, Kylie has worked and produced two albums and is currently producing her third which will bring both old and new country music styles to the table. The New Zealand country music scene is very much a niche which can make it difficult for those wanting to
seriously make a go of it, she says. “It’s a hard road because country music in New Zealand is such a small genre, it’s really hard to get gigs and keep them.” Despite these hardships, Kylie finds there is a market with loyal fans and wellrounded people to support as her career grows. But it was thanks to a close friend who nominated her for the honour and put her name in the bucket of contenders that has brought her the ticket to Nebraska. Kylie is raring to go and make her name known in the place country music was born and to show what New Zealand has to give. “I feel so unbelievably honoured that they picked me. I never thought anything like this could happen...I’m completely blown away, “I’m a little person from New Zealand making a name over there.” Her latest album will be released this August and will bring a new twist to the classic southern-styled music. ■■ To keep tabs on Kylie and her music, check her out on Facebook to keep up with the latest news.

How are you finding the T2 Lane?
I
t’s been two weeks since Auckland Transport (AT) launched its T2/Bus Lane along Pakuranga Road. It is part of a wider traffic management plan to help ease congestion along Pakuranga Road during the two year construction period of the Eastern Busway. An express bus service along Pakuranga Road has also been launched, as well as the introduction of a recommended speed during peak times of 50km/h, down from the usual 60km/h. Launching on July 30 is a park and ride service from Lloyd Elsmore Park. In the months leading up to the launch of the T2/Bus Lane, residents expressed scepticism about whether
the bus lane would actually improve traffic conditions along Pakuranga Road. Many feared it would instead impede traffic by reducing the three lane road to two, with very few motorists making use of the T2 Lane. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown has strenuously opposed the T2 Lane, most recently accusing AT of hoping to slow Pakuranga Road down by reducing the speed limit at peak times to 50km/h. “While it may only be an advised speed at present, it makes clear AT’s desire to slow down Pakuranga Road, which is already suffering from long travel times due to traffic congestion in the area,” Brown says. “They claim the purpose of the lower speed limit is to make it safer
for traffic to move in and out of the T2 lane while it is in operation, but if they were truly concerned about this they would have taken the community’s suggestion on board to extend the 50m clearance and give motorists more space to switch lanes.” However the first official data has been released on how the T2 lane affects the wider network of traffic and single occupant vehicles travelling along Pakuranga Road. And according to the data, travel time remains almost the same as it did before for the majority of motorists. An AT spokesperson says there is always a ‘bedding in period’ when transit lanes are introduced, early indications show that it is being uti-
lised by multiple occupant vehicles with no evidence of delays to general traffic. The AT data shows that before the T2 lane the average travel time between Botany Road /Pakuranga Road intersection and Ti Rakau Drive from Mondays to Fridays between 7am and 9am for all vehicles in May and June 2019 was 10.4 and 9.4 minutes respectively. The data shows the average travel time for the same distance from Monday to Thursday in the first week of the T2 being operational between 7am and 9am for all vehicles is 10.1 minutes. “This demonstrates that there has been some positive behavioural change by local communities, whether it be adopting public trans-
port, changing travel routes or travelling outside of peak travel hours.” The spokesperson says the advised speed of 50km/h has been introduced on all Panmure-bound lanes between Dunrobin Place and Gossamer Drive while the T2 lane is operational (6am – 10am, Mon – Fri) to encourage motorists to safely drive to the new road conditions and layout. ■■ Now the question is how are you finding the T2/Bus Lane? Let us know by contacting editor@times. co.nz. ■■ If you would like to sign up to receive a personalised travel plan, visit AT.govt.nz/travelplaneast. Liam brings star ability to ice rink By Farida Master
Yvonne Featherstone and her husband, Les.
It is not very often that you get to see a professional ice hockey star play locally, more so when he happens to be Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter and rock legend Rod Stewart’s son. Liam Stewart is former Spokane Chiefs Washington team member. On July 20 and 21, the local Botany Swarm Ice Hockey team will take on Liam’s NZ squad, the SkyCity Stampede from Queenstown at Paradice Ice Rink, Botany. There promises to be a lot of exciting action with the best local players complemented by the most skilled ice hockey players, all showing the speed and skill it takes to play this fast-paced game. Raised in Los Angeles, Liam got hooked on ice-hockey in the United States. He played football until his famous parents took him to a New York Rangers game when he was 14 and he decided to pursue ice hockey. The five ice hockey teams which make the NZ Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) are Botany Swarm, West Auckland Admirals, Skycity Stampede (Queenstown), Dunedin Thunder and Canterbury Red Devils (Christchurch). Each team is allowed to have four imports from other countries. Some of the players in the Botany Swarm have been playing since the league inception back in 2005. Currently, the Botany Swarm sits second on the leader board ahead

Yvonne’s great legacy ➤➤Continued from page 1 She also manned the police office at Pakuranga and worked for three years at the Citizens Advice Bureau at Pakuranga. But her greatest love, Les says, was her family. The couple had two children – daughter Janet and a son Mark – who they adored. Five years ago, Yvonne started to become forgetful,
says Les, which was the beginning of “that terrible disease” Parkinson’s and Dementia. “I was devastated watching her deteriorate and knowing there was no getting better. I loved her and felt helpless. I know that she loved me right up until the end,” he says. “I held her hand and kissed her and she smiled before passing away.”

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, July 18, 2019 — 5
Punt or bridge the Tamaki River? As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017. From 1845, Hemi Pepene operated a ferry service rowing passengers in his rowboat across the Tamaki River. This Maori farmer was known for his entrepreneurial harvesting of his crops of wheat and oats, selling the bags of grain to the Australian goldfields for far better prices than offered by Auckland flour-millers. He had several farm labourers even including a European servant. Some years after the Fencible soldier-settlers arrived in Howick, the Government took over the ferry service, using a hand-operated clumsy winch and chain that was free from 6am until sunset, but fees applied during the night for the operator. Irritated passengers queued often for over an hour and horses swam across beside the punt. Howick residents, especially farmers, demanded a bridge to get their bags of wheat or oats to the Auckland markets. Auckland Provincial Council held local meetings focused on “who will pay for the bridge?” Suggested a poll tax or a toll on all who use the bridge? Council advertised for a design. The cheapest design was accepted and he was given the £50. Fourteen Pakuranga landowners signed up as guarantors to pay interest on
the funds until tolls were charged. And 120 Totara piles up to the impressive 19m long [65 feet] were felled in the Mahurangi bush. Once rammed into the sandstone base they were sheathed in brass alloy muntz metal to protect the piles from teredo worms. The wooden section 195 metres [640 feet] long was built of kauri beams with kauri decking. Large granite stone abutments were quarried in Melbourne as the East Tamaki lava stone was not strong enough. William Weaver, engineer-in-chief to Auckland Provincial Council, had studied under the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel (an English mechanical and civil engineer) in England, supervised the construction. The iron section incorporating a 40 foot swingspan was built and erected by Russell and Company in Sydney before being sent to Auckland. At the official opening in October 1865, the last stone abutment was tapped into place by Robert Graham, superintendent of Auckland Provincial Council, followed by a substantial lunch for more than 100 guests in a large marquee beside the Panmure Redoubt below St Matthias Church. After many toasts and a
ANNIVERSARY meal, a dance was held which included the lively fashionable “Sir Roger de Coverley” and everyone went home very happy. The abutment roads were soon built and Howick’s horse buses could reach Auckland in less than two hours. Almost as good as in 2018! Large crowds came out to see the new engineering structure. But by 1913 a new bridge was needed as the kauri decking was rotting. In 1916 a new wider concrete bridge was built. Using sea water to mix the concrete, sand off Bucklands Beach and poor steel due to World War I restrictions, cracks soon appeared and in 1960, the present (2nd) Panmure Bridge was opened. The iron section of the 1865 bridge was recently restored with financial help of Auckland Council. The marina buildings are soon to be demolished to make way for dual designated bus-lanes over a new third bridge over the Tamaki River. ■ Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

Family loses everything A
Givealittle page has been started to help a Maraetai family that lost everything in a house fire last week. Smoke was seen billowing across Maraetai as firefighters battled a house fire on Craig Road last Thursday. Fire engines from Otara, Howick and Manurewa responded to the fire at around 1.45pm, but back-up was required, bringing the total number of engines to 11, media reported. A neighbour confirmed the family is devastated, but nobody was hurt. A Givealittle page has been set up for the

family of four. The page reads: “Their home is gone and most of their belongings have been lost. The family have insurance but there will be a shortfall and the funds will take time to process. Their expenses are far beyond their means to pay them right now.” Donations were a little more than $3000 at the time of print. A neighbour has also started collecting donations of clothing, toiletries, furniture and household items for the displaced family through a private community Facebook page.

Bringing colour to Fashion Week Y
oung fashion designer Bryony Acraman of Howick is on a fast-track to New Zealand Fashion Week. In six years, since the Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion project began, more than 75 students of fashion have been catapulted into the big-time. The 2019 crop of fresh talent faced the judges in June. Judging day saw 39 extraordinary works of silk paraded by models in this season’s palette of fashion colours from Resene. Crafted and nuanced by the students into contemporary fashion looks with “intricate design rationale”, bold creative expression and technical precision, the garments were put through their paces. It’s a project where Resene collaborates with NZ Fashion Tech giving undergrads in their final year of study at campuses in Auckland and Wellington a chance to be part of a professional fashion shoot, direct their own portfolio images from behind the camera and feature in a Resene on-line gallery. The 17 finalists in 2019 – 10 from Auckland including 22-year-old Acraman – and seven from Wellington – will attend a glamorous opening night at New Zealand Fashion Week on August 29 where the Resene Designer Runway will open with their designs – dresses, jumpsuits, shorts – in an explosion of vibrant colour. “Bryony Acraman brought ancient armour, the story of Mulan and origami themes to her design in Resene Valour, developing an elegant contemporary dress with striking sculpted overskirt and subtle

tive young people ... illustrate to audiences at Fashion Week how their colour tells a story.” The winner of Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion 2019 will be announced at Fashion Week and they will receive a new industrial sewing machine and an engraved pair of shears of the highest quality.
Local residents tackling local crime Community safety has improved a lot over the years, mostly as a testament to the professionalism of our local police, but also to the efforts of people like the dedicated volunteers of the Botany Crime Watch Patrol. This community organisation was founded 15 years ago. Its ranks are filled with locals who care about their local patch. I joined two Crime Watch patrollers as they went out on patrol last Saturday night. They serve as the eyes and ears of
our local police, who cannot be everywhere all the time. Patrollers observe and report suspected criminal activity. I don’t know how many crimes they’ve stopped over the years but it’s bound to be a big number. Over the years as Dannemora and Botany has grown, much of the low level crime, like burglaries, car theft, and graffiti, has been cleaned up through the efforts of these volunteer patrollers. They do an amazing job helping to reduce crime in our local East
Auckland community. We all owe them a debt of gratitude. Botany Crime Watch Patrol is always looking for new volunteers so if helping to keep the area safe sounds like something you’d like to do, give Margaret a call on 09 274-9449. Also doing their bit to fight crime is a group of Northpark residents who are sick of the anti-social activity that’s been happening at Tarnica Park for some time. They want lights and a security
camera installed at the park to increase visibility and make it safer. I’m supporting these locals as they try to motivate the Howick Local Board to provide the funding for the lighting and camera. These residents have the right to be able to enjoy their local park without having to dodge broken glass and other rubbish dropped on the ground or be afraid to venture there at night. Guests and volunteers past and present of the Howick Selwyn Centre came together recently to celebrate the Centre’s 15-year anniversary. The milestone celebration saw around 80 guests enjoy a lively programme of social activities, gentle exercise and morning tea. The Selwyn Centre at All Saints Anglican Church is a community drop-in centre for older people which provides seniors with a valuable opportunity to meet up two mornings each week in a friendly and positive environment. The programme, which operates on Mondays and Fridays, welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds and aims to enhance older people’s social interaction and engagement in life and make a difference in the lives of those who may be lonely. The Howick Selwyn Centre first opened at All Saints in 2004 under the guidance of former clergy team and Howick locals, Reverends Diane Miller-Keeley and Bruce Keeley. “We want to celebrate 15 wonderful years of supporting Howick’s senior citizens and

A priceless jewel at Timmermans
We all know someone deserving in the community, someone who goes that extra mile, or devotes that extra hour or two of their time or is just there when you need support and encouragement.
By Farida Master
A
t 87, Joan Rutherford is on her toes eight hours a day. It’s 10am at the newlyrefurbished family jewellery store Timmermans at Botany Town Centre and Joan, with her eye for detail, meticulously checks that the jewellery is displayed at the right angle; the counter is well polished and the window displays meet exacting international standards. Even as she is giving precise instructions to a new recruit about different designer watch brands, she bends down to pick up a tiny piece of plastic that her keen eye has spotted on the floor. It’s not often that you meet an octogenarian who has devoted 50 years of her life to a familyrun business and is so passionate about it. Hardly surprising then that some customers have even mistaken her to be Mrs Timmermans considering her long standing presence at the store. After a while, the staff stopped explaining that she has been

around every since Stephen Timmermans was a boy and she’d take him out for ice cream just so that his dad Mr T, could focus on repairing watches, without being disturbed. Joan says that the best part of her job is her involement in people’s lives on both happy and sad occasions. “Whether clients come in for designing new jewellery, repairs or service work, there is always a story behind it,” she says. “We are there with them on their special occasion be it weddings, engagements, birthdays and then there are sad moments when someone has lost a family member... a father has lost his son and wants us to encapsulate their memory in a ring or a locket; or then they want you to repair their dad’s timeless watch. “There is such a sense of pride in creating things that are precious to them. “In what other industry can you work, where things that are priceless get passed on for hundreds of years?” Joan, who lives in an apart-
ment at the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village, says she sells jewellery even when she is not working at the store. “I sold a diamond bangle to a 90-year-old at the village. She said she always wanted to own one before she died,” says Joan. Stephen says he still takes her along to every business meeting. “She is so sharp and knowledgeable and has always been the caring matriarch of the Timmerman family,” says the seventh generation jeweller and watchmaker,” he says. “So many former employees still come to visit Joan at the shop. She is a confidante to many. “Both our families have been integrated over the years. When someone has been in your life for that long, you share mutual love and respect.” Ask Joan about retirement and she says she will continue working till one day “she pops it”. “Who would employ an 87-year-old,” she laughs. To which Stephen’s prompt response is “They would be foolish not to.”

Play addresses domestic abuse REVIEW The Book of Everything
By
By: Richard Tulloch Adapted from the novel by Guus Kuijer Howick Little Theatre, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga July 6-27 Directed by: Alex Gleed Erina Smythe The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer and adapted for the stage by Australian playwright and children’s novelist Richard Tulloch is HLT’s latest production and perfectly-timed for the winter school holidays. The director Alex Gleed, his cast and crew, have tastefully realised this honest and thought-provoking play which is set in post-war Holland in 1951 and naturally we sense the remnants of World War II. A play for all ages, The Book of Everything tugs at the heart-
strings whilst making us laugh at the same time – no mean feat. Dealing with the difficult subject of domestic abuse in such a delicate and tactful way through the eyes of the young Thomas Klopper, we are given our insight into the heart of this 9-year-old (almost 10) boy, as documented in his diary which he calls his Book of Everything. Designed by Ian Milnes, the set allows the exemplary cast freedom of movement throughout, also bringing them almost into the audience, allowing us to become part of the action. The lighting by Nick Martin is a character of its own and the sound by Nik Rolls is no less impressive. i.e. the ticking clock. The whole production team needs congratulating. Thomas Klopper, on whom the play depends, is played with true commitment and depth by Robert Limm. He handles the complexity of the role with such truth and brings Thomas to life before our eyes. Jo Crichton plays the mother
with great understanding and dignity. We all feel for her and also realise that she has lived through worse. Margot, played by Raquel Carter, does a sterling job, the audience seeing clearly that she is her father’s daughter. Father, Mark Madden-Snoad, conveys the complexity of this tragic man who is struggling with life. Marie Parker is obviously relishing her role as Mrs Van Amersfort and fills it with charm and believability, and Scarlett Kean as Eliza is simply delicious, handling her leg with ease, and we certainly know why Thomas is obsessed with her. Ben Egan, as Jesus, makes us all believe in Ben’s character; he is so comfortable in those hard-to-fill shoes. Bess Fairfax has created another completely rounded and truthful character in Aunt Pie, literally “wearing the trousers”. All in all, with the execution of this outstanding piece of ensemble theatre, Alex Gleed at Howick Little Theatre has given us a gem, not to be missed. Go.
Calling all zero waste innovators Grants of up to $50,000 are available from Auckland Council for those with ideas on how to reduce waste. The Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF) helps bring ideas to life and support the city to reach its target of zero waste to landfill by 2040. WMIF funds projects from
businesses, local iwi, and education and community groups that will divert waste from landfill. Council is encouraging Aucklanders focused on waste minimisation start-ups and initiatives to think about how WMIF funding could enhance or expand their work. Grant application workshops are running from late July to
early August across the region to help people prepare for the application round, which opens on 1 September and closes at the end of the month. Cr Penny Hulse, Chair of the environment and community committee, says the fund has been an important catalyst in fostering innovative waste minimisation projects.

their trio can do alongside Operatunity favourites Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua and Tainui Kuru with the Glenn Miller Band. “This concert is lots of fun tunes, costumes and choreography with the tight harmonies of The Andrews Sisters, the swagger of the 50s and the frivolity of the 60s and 70s.” And as for who Rebecca’s favourite Diva is, she finds that a tough question to answer, “I have so much love for the original Divas, women like Ella Fitzgerald all the way through to modern divas like Beyoncé.” Featuring hits including; Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Summertime, and We’ll Meet Again from the 40s; Mister Sandman, Cry Me a River and Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend from the 50s; These Boots are Made for Walkin’, I Say a Little Prayer, and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough from the 60s; and an ABBA medley and Natural Woman from the 70s, this is sure to be a spectacular show filled with all your favourites!

We’re in good company Poignant and often funny, Company recently played on the West End and topped the list of the 2019 Olivier Award nominations with nine nominations including Best Musical Revival. And now Company, written by Stephen Sondheim, will be performed at the Harlequin Theatre. The show tells the story of Bobby, who on the night of his 35th birthday, is reflecting on his bachelor status when compared to his married friends and the three women he is dating. The show is being led by
Grant Meese, one of New Zealand’s finest musical theatre directors, who says the revival and its success is testament to the relevance of the themes that Company addresses. “Everyone has a Bobby in their life, be it male or female – who may be for various reasons not confirming to traditional notions of marriage or ‘settling down’. Company does a fantastic job of considering this in a funny and thoughtful way,” he said. “Our cast have the talents and energy to really make the most of this challenging score
and witty dialogue. “Howick residents should feel proud of Harlequin for attracting this calibre of performer.” The show features popular songs including ‘Being Alive’, ‘You Could Drive a Person Crazy’ and ‘Ladies who Lunch’. ■■ The season runs from Saturday July 27 and there are strictly 10 shows only. Phone 361 1000. Show Dates July 27 – August 10. Concessions available for seniors, students, Harlequin members and group bookings.

MP continues push for Botany busway
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, July 18, 2019 — 11
O
ne of East Auckland’s busiest roads could be the key to unlocking local residents’ access to fast and efficient public transport. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is pushing for the creation of a rapid transit busway from Botany to Auckland Airport via Manukau that would run along Te Irirangi Drive in Flat Bush. He says it’s logical for it to connect to the Eastern Busway, which will go from Pakuranga to Botany and is now under construction. “When Te Irirangi Drive was built it was made wide enough to accommodate a busway or light rail,” Ross says. “A rapid transit corridor down Te Irirangi Drive will benefit local public transport users but it will also alleviate congestion for car users by getting vehicles off the roads.” Ross recently met officials from the New Zealand Transport Agency and Auckland Transport (AT) to get an update on a number of important projects, including the busway. They told him about plans to improve public transport in east Auckland through construction of the Eastern Busway as well as the Airport to Botany project, which
Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is pushing for the creation of a rapid transit busway between Auckland Airport and Botany. Photo supplied
is being led by AT. Ross says he’s used his voice in Parliament to question Transport Minister Phil Twyford on behalf of the local community about the busway. He was an elected member of the Manukau City Council when the Eastern Busway, then known as AMETI, was first announced in 2006. That project has taken too long to get under way and he wants to ensure similar delays don’t happen with the busway between Botany and the airport, Ross says. “It’s great to see the Eastern Busway finally being constructed but we spent so long talking about it before the work started. “Howick and Botany have
often been forgotten when it comes to public transport. That isn’t good enough.” Ross says traffic congestion on local roads is still a major problem and addressing it is one of his main priorities. “We aren’t going to begin to tackle this challenge without encouraging more people to get out of cars and onto public transport. That won’t happen until the latter becomes a better option than taking a car. It’s got to be fast and efficient, easy to access and affordable.” AT says it’s identified Te Irirangi Drive as the “best and most direct route” between Botany and Manukau. The agency says the project will improve access between
east and south Auckland as well as to the major employment areas of the airport and Manukau. It will also significantly improve travel choices, reliability and journey times and support growth opportunities along the route. A new $60 million rail and bus interchange being constructed in Puhinui is expected to open in early 2021 and is being delivered in two stages. The first stage is an “early deliverable” of the airport to Botany rapid transit project. It forms part of the wider Southwest Gateway programme which also involves the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Airport.

Guide dogs need you There are many ingredients needed to breed and train a Blind Foundation guide dog. This Friday, the most important one is you. Bakers across the country will be hosting Bikkie Day parties on Friday July 26 to raise funds for the Blind Foundation NZ so they can continue their guide dog programme and you’re invited. It takes two years and a significant investment to raise and train a guide dog. It’s a lifechanging service which is entirely funded by charitable donations. Starting with a sophisticated breeding programme, their development includes dedicated volunteer puppy raisers to teach them the ways of the busy world we live in, and training and support from specialist trainers. Guide dogs are one of the ways the Blind Foundation help people retain their freedom and independence after vision loss to move around safely and confidently.

Bucklands Beach car accident witnesses I am the father of the young girl involved in a collision with a police car on Bucklands Beach Road on Saturday July 6 at about 11-30pm. I accept and expect my daughter to face the consequences of breaking her (driver) license conditions. I have requested the police that the Serious Crash Unit fully investigate the crash and believe that due to the fact that a stationary police car was involved, that there can be no other impartial party with the specialist training, knowledge, skill-set and practical experience qualified to do so. If any members of the public were in the vicinity and may have any cellphone footage (photos or video), I ask that they please come forward to either the Times, myself or the police (editor@times.co.nz).

Further away from God
The Wellbeing budget has come and gone. Not much has changed. Taxpayer dollars have been allocated to various needy causes and that is OK, but nothing changes. The moral compass
DRY EYE AND MYOPIA CONTROL CENTRE
of our country still stands pointing south. It amazes me that the root causes for requiring a Wellbeing budget in the first place is not addressed. Our Finance Minister, the PM and Deputy PM are the blind leading the blind. They stumble when they should lead. Great leaders are moral leaders who establish a moral vision for their country. They bring a nation like ours nearer to God, not further away. All we have witnessed is a tinkering with the finance figures and the left wing funding of the ‘victim mindset’. The reason for our mental sickness, our high suicide rates, the high prison populations, are all the result of removing Godly guidance from our cultural framework. When God is taken out of our Parliament, out of our Universities and our schools, taken out of our family lives and when our sporting clubs throw a tantrum when a major player speaks the truth of God’s word - then we all suffer and continue the downward spiral of worsening societal pain. Wake up NZ for God’s Wellbeing. Press into that good and abundant life to which God has destined us to live. Righteousness always exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

How bad and clandestine is this? Shaping people’s opinion left and away from the centre and right. Do we realise this massive submission of our freedom? Google has again, deliberately, censored searches, so this is where to find out more: https:// w w w. b i t c h ut e . c o m /v i d e o / gy7mfr2qDc7J/

Howick Library issue another heavy-handed council action Thank you Times (July 11) for highlighting the issue of the old Howick Library building in Fencible Drive. It’s a shame to see such a potentially useful community asset in such a poor state. I appreciate that Panuku Auckland needs to take actions to make this safe, this appears very heavy-handed. Anything that puts the Howick Village Market at risk is a serious concern. Good on (Howick Local Board member) Jim Donald for working with the community on this (and many other issues). We need a council that is more community-focused and works collaboratively with locals.

Pigeon Mountain wetland restoration planting Attention all tree lovers and volunteers. There is going to be a big tree planting drive in the wetland area on the western side of Pigeon Mountain Road (opposite the maunga carpark). The Tupuna Maunga Authority is calling for volunteers for the Ohuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain wetland restoration planting days, scheduled for July and August. The plan is to plant a diverse mix of up to 30,000 native grasses, shrubs and tree species which will help to encourage the native fauna and flora return to an area they once occupied and thrived in. This planting is part of the wider native vegetation programme
which seeks to enhance the mauri (energy) and wairua (spirit) of Ohuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain and adjoining environmental systems and to restore a functional and healthy ecosystem with strong biodiversity values. There will be two community volunteer weekend planting days and two planting days for local schools. ■■ Community days are Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, August 3, 10am to 1pm ■■ School planting days are Friday, August 23 and Wednesday, August 28, 9.30am to 11.30am and 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Up to 30,000 plants are to be planted at Pigeon Mountain.

everend Monsignor Raymond Green, the founding parish priest of St Mark’s Catholic Parish, died peacefully at St Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor in Herne Bay, aged 92. It was during his appointment as assistant priest at Panmure, that Bishop Delargy asked him to found the parish of the yetto-be-built, St Mark’s Church in Pakuranga. At that time, the site of this large church of Pakuranga with its school was a farm with a derelict farmhouse and an old cowshed. Father Green (as he was then known), who had formerly been a plumber, began masses in Edgewater College Hall. All the chairs had to be put out and returned after every mass. Everything required for the mass had to be brought to the college. On other feast days, masses were celebrated in the Anglican and Methodist Churches of Pakuranga. To save money, Father Green moved from his rented accommodation in Pakuranga into the old farmhouse, which long-time parishioner Veronica Smith said wasn’t fit for human habitation. It had brambles growing through the walls and vermin. The cowshed was transformed under Father Green into a beautiful chapel. Monsignor Green began as an

assistant priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish Epsom, where he ministered as chaplain for the Carmelite Monastery and at Green Lane Hospital. He rode a bicycle to the hospital to serve the patients, particularly the dying. From there he was appointed Curate at St Peter Chanel Parish, Whakatane, with a special assignment to form a new parish of St Gerard’s, Kawerau. He was then appointed to St. Andrew’s, Tuakau, with chaplaincy to the Marist Brothers’ Juniorate. At this time, Meremere Power Station was being built and he looked after the construction staff on site. Father Green’s first appointment as a parish priest was at Tuakau. The following appointment was to Sacred Heart Parish, Ponsonby, where his duties included teaching
at St. Paul’s College, Diocesan Director of Vocations and assisting St. Mary’s, Avondale, with Sunday masses. Thames was his next home where he worked in the Parish of St Francis of Assisi and which included the whole Coromandel Peninsula. He became a Monsignor in December 2007. He was parish priest at Christ the King in Owairaka where he served from 1983 until 2010 and from 2011 until 2015 as Pastor Emeritus. A vigil mass will be celebrated at the Church of Christ the King, 260 Richardson Road, Owairaka on today (July 18) at 7.30pm. A requiem mass will be celebrated at St Mark’s Catholic Church, 334 Pakuranga Highway, Pakuranga tomorrow (July 19) at 11.30am. The funeral will then leave for the Panmure Catholic Cemetery.

Consents still rising The latest dwelling consents figures confirmed that the ramping up of construction activity across NZ isn’t finished yet, despite signs of capacity constraints around labour and materials in the industry, according to CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson. “For the year to May, there were 34,672 new consents issued, the
highest figure since December 1974 and putting us firmly in the midst of one of the three biggest new building booms on,” he said. “Consents for alterations and additions are also pretty buoyant, albeit the total value for the year to May of $1.77 billion was about $90m lower than the peak of $1.86m in the 12 months to July last year.”

Penny Pirrit, director urban growth and housing at Auckland Council says the figures from council’s latest housing report reflect what is set out in Auckland’s long-term growth plan. “The Auckland Plan, which looks 30-years ahead, states that most future growth will occur within the existing urban areas, with less sprawl into rural areas, so it’s pleasing to see the consenting data reflect this. “The change in Auckland’s housing stock is becom-

ing more pronounced and this is being driven by increasing numbers of Aucklanders wanting to live close to work, near commuting options and in low-maintenance properties.” “The Unitary Plan is enabling more homes to be built in areas where people want to live. By removing much of the density controls that prevented intensification in some parts of the city, we’ve made it easier for new types of homes to be delivered for Aucklanders,” says Mrs Pirrit. Auckland’s improving public transport networks are also influencing where new homes are built, with 29 per cent of new dwellings consented within 1500 metres walking distance of a rapid transport network.
Key findings:
■■ 1657 dwellings were consented in May 2019. ■■ In the year ending May 2019, 13,881 dwellings were consented in the region. ■■ 35 per cent of new dwellings consented in May 2019 were houses, 28 per cent were apartments and 37 per cent were townhouses, flats, units, retirement village units, or other types of attached dwellings. ■■ 238 dwellings were consented on Housing New Zealand or Tamaki Regeneration Company owned land in May 2019. ■■ 1582 dwellings consented in May 2019 were inside the RUB (rural-urban boundary). Over the past 12 months, 94 per cent of new dwellings consented were inside the RUB. ■■ 29 per cent of dwellings consented were inside the 1500m walking catchments of the rapid transport network in May 2019. ■■ 1238 dwellings were ‘completed’ by having a Code Compliance Certificate (CCC) issued in May 2019. ■■ In the year ending May 2019, 10,107 dwellings had a CCC issued.

t one time they were political rivals. And now they have hugged and made up. JamiLee Ross’s Facebook post about former Labour Party candidate Tofik Mamedov came as a big surprise. His post read: “This morning I had coffee with Howick local Tofik Mamedov. Many will know Tofik as the Labour candidate for Botany in the 2014 and 2017 elections. We were opponents. I owe Tofik a big apology – I was a bit of a d*** to him when he was the Labour candidate. I was too wrapped up in the game, thought I was better than him, and I treated him appallingly. “Many of us did when we were in government. It was wrong and I have said sorry to him several times since. Back in January Tofik reached out to me to check how I was going. “Despite how I treated him, he was a decent person and wanted to know how I was. “We had coffee in January and he was so nice he even bought my children Christmas presents. How could this guy that I had battled for two elections, which I had beaten and been unpleasant to, be so nice that he checked up on me and went as far as thinking about

my kids’ wellbeing? “Tofik is a kind and compassionate man. “Our politics might differ, but his small acts of humanity meant a lot at the start of this year, and they still do now. I’ve learnt a lot about politics and about myself recently. People like Tofik have taught me about decency in how you treat others. I hope Tofik is successful in all his future endeavours. He’s a good guy. I feel lucky that he took the time to extend a warm embrace.” And it looked like the post was not just all talk. Jami-Lee followed it up by inviting Tofik to his table at a business breakfast recently hosted by
Getba – Greater East Tamaki Business Association – at the Waipuna Conference Rooms in Highbrook And while guest speaker Counties Manukau East Area Commander Inspector Wendy Spiller spoke about what a long way women in police have come: “In 1987 there were hardly any women in police. I remember they handed us a mirror in our police kit with a handbag.” As Area Commander Counties Manukau Police, her patch covers a population of 200,000 incorporating three local boards and 70 schools. Big changes. It was good to see that a lot had also changed for Jami-Lee and Tofik.

$30,000 each for Santa parade and fireworks from local board grants Santa is set to sleigh through Howick again after the local board granted the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust $30,000 for the village’s annual Christmas parade. The money will help meet the overall costs, including traffic management, a website, set-up and pack-down costs, advertising, management and entertainment. Pakuranga Rotary was also awarded $30,000, towards the cost of a community fireworks display and festival, while the New Hope Community Church Trust was allocated $25,000 towards delivering its Christmas event. All three Community Grants budget allocations were made on the understanding the funding would allow the events to go forward. And more than $30,000 has been awarded to more than 20 community groups under the board’s second quick response round for the year, which was heavily oversubscribed.

Local scouts head to US for world jamboree They were preparing for it for the last two years and finally the day had arrived when a contingent of 40 Scouts plus 20 scout leaders and dads accompanying them, took off on Sunday to the 24th World Scout Jamboree in North America—the biggest scout jamboree with representatives from 180 different countries. Seventeen-year-old Quentin Stephen from Edgewater College says there are over 150 million active scouts from all over the world and the jamboree brings together people from different cultures with different values, “which makes it an awesome experience”. “The theme this year is ‘Unlock a New World’, which allows us to discover new things,” he says. Jamboree is from July 22 – August 2 at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, “The US has been preparing the campsite for the jamboree since 2005.” Quentin says that four years ago he was in Japan for the World Scout Jamboree and got to do things he would have never done otherwise. Like visiting Hiroshima and seeing how bombs are detonated. That apart, he says being a scout has opened doors to Outward Bound Trips, flying a helicopter in Nelson, running a 21k marathon and making lifelong friends. Callum Clark also from the Venturers at Trinity Scouts Highland Park says that the trip is all about friendship, leadership

and adventure. The 16-year-old Saint Kentigern student has made a lot of friends like Quentin only because he has been in scouts since he was little. Being his first international jamboree in West Virginia, Callum says he looks forward to travelling with his best friend and can’t wait to meet people from vastly different worlds. The 21-day trip they
say is not just about knots and woggles. It’s not just about just for boys either. Girls are also part of Scouts. In 1987, girls were officially allowed to join scouts. The Jamboree which is about scouting fellowship unites the world’s young people to promote peace and create multi-sensory experiences.
obnail’s good-vibe trail through a quarter of a century tells the story of a band and people getting better at their music craft and lives. The well-travelled Wellington group with devoted fans across New Zealand, including in east Auckland, celebrate their 25th anniversary at a time when, collectively and as individuals, they’re hitting a peak of their musical powers. Where many bands struggle to happily make two years, let alone 25, Hobnail go from strength-tostrength because of their great understanding of each other’s playing style and thinking, and the exceptional quality of original music they write and interpret. Drummer Caroline Easther, the Kiwi music legend who has played for The Chills, The Verlaines and Beat Rhythm Fashion in her hugely interesting career, and has just released her first solo album Lucky, says “my favourite thing about Hobnail is that we’re like family”. Guitarist and main lead vocalist Rob Joass, Hobnail’s chief songwriter, who has also just delivered his second solo album Pencarrow, says: “I’m really proud we’ve steered our own path and kept challenging ourselves to improve.” Joass is known as a songwriter’s songwriter, a master wordsmith who wears his heart on his sleeve, prolifically turning out song after
song about life – ups and downs, love and heartache, and the road to happiness and redemption. Jo Moir smiles and sways her way through live performances, shining on rockin’ folk-style violin and soulful vocals. “To sing four-part harmonies is quite a thing when it all comes together. Feels like magic.” Bassist Hamish Graham says: “Hard work will beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When it does, stand back and watch the magic.” Hobnail started as the Hobnail Boots in 1994, but by the fifth album, Baggage, in 2012, when they were hitting high notes and generating more attention, they removed Boots from the title. Fortune Horses was an acclaimed album, a finalist for Best Folk Album at the 2009 NZ Music Awards, while Baggage was an all-encompassing illustration of their maturing altcountry Celtic folk-rock, with the title track nominated as a finalist for Best Country Song at the 2013 NZ Music Awards. Following albums, String Things in 2015 and Blue Sky Songs in 2017, have also hit the right chords with loyal fans. “I’ve loved the opportunity to develop as a singer and player,” Joass says. “Working with musicians who are supportive and also wanting to improve.” To celebrate the 25th, Hobnail is releasing a Best Of compilation that takes them to The Wine Cellar in Auckland tomorrow, July 19.

Duo clock 100 prem caps I
n a first for PIC Insurance, Brokers Pakuranga United two long serving Premiers ran out on Saturday (July 6) on Bell Park to play their 100th games together against Waitemata in what has become a real East v West derby in recent times. Midfield Back Saleaula (Aula) Silipa (28) and hooker/captain Michael (Beefy) McBeath (29) have both been premier leaders in the revitalisation of Pakuranga rugby over the last 10 years and becoming centurions together had them amped for a big game. “Pakuranga looks after its players from its youngest to us Premiers” said Silipa. “The old boys make a real effort to ensure not only our rugby but our working lives and families are top priority.” McBeath said: “Having been at the club since U7s, this place is my life, it’s a part of me and it always will be, I can’t wait for Saturday.”
club: The people – I love the way the older members look after us younger ones. Every time I needed a job, someone in the club was there to help me out.

Saleaula Silipa
Aula started his Rugby with the club in the summer of 2008/9 for the 7s side as a 17-year-old graduate of Edgewater College. He was spotted by then RDO Thomas Cole (Noodles) who soon had him hooked on the club playing for the U21s before debuting for the Premiers in 2010 against East Tamaki. ■■ Age: 28 ■■ Debut: 2010 ■■ Premier caps: 100
■■ Favourite game: The 2013 Gallaher Shield semi-final against a stacked Grammar Tec side. I don’t think there has ever been a better atmosphere on Bell Park ever. The crowd was amped! ■■ Most influential team mate:

Beefy started his rugby at the club in 2007 as an U7 player (funnily enough it was for the Pumas), He then played all the way through to the U15s before playing for Howick College and Sacred Heart College. He was soon back to play U19s and U21s before debuting for the Premiers in 2012 against Mt Wellington. After a 2-year stint in England, he came back and is currently captaining the side. A more prouder Pakuranga man we don’t think you would find. ■■ Age: 29 ■■ Premier caps: 100 ■■ Favourite game: The round robin game against Grammar-Tec in 2013, I can’t remember the score but it was a real cracker! ■■ Most influential team mate: Hands down G-Money (Gareth Arlidge), He organised our team so well for many years. ■■ Favourite team mate: Adam Darracott (Heavy D), we have had so many good times together both here and in England. ■■ Favourite thing about the club: This place is my home, it’s a huge part of me and always will be. No shame in glorious loss C
ricket’s greatest World Cup won by one Kiwi and lost by 11. That was the amazing scene on the hallowed turf of Lords on Monday morning NZ time after the scores had been tied on 241 and the Super Over at 15 runs apiece. The difference was England scored more boundaries, 26 compared with New Zealand’s 17. Yet the Black Caps could have won. Should have won but for Christchurch-born England hero Ben Stokes who top scored with 84 that included a boundary off his sliding bat from a Martin Guptill throw that reaped six runs instead of a hard-run two. Stokes, the son of Kiwis rugby league prop Gerard, also delivered killer blows in that Super Over 15 that Jimmy Neesham and Martin Guptill equalised before the latter was run out. What a game! What a shame! Yet for nerve-tingling drama on cricket’s finest stage it was fantastic. At the end England’s sporting Irish captain Eoin Morgan held the trophy aloft on a day there were no losers despite the Black Caps gutted feelings. Back home, a nation of fewer than 5 million citizens had cause for pride, not only at taking mighty England so close but also breaking the hearts of 1.3 billion cricket mad Indian fans by winning their semi-

final. It was in that game Martin Guptill redeemed himself from a poor batting performance throughout the tournament with a magnificent run-out throw of champion closer MS Dhoni that swung the game New Zealand’s way. While Stokes earned man of the match honours in the final, hum-
ble Kane Williamson was just as deserving of the player of the tournament kudos. Not only did he average 82.7 with the bat but his captaincy was superb in his reading of the pitches, field placement and rotation of his bowlers. The complete antithesis of the gung ho Brendon McCullum whose
swashbuckling antics led to the 2015 World Cup final against champions Australia, Williamson is an incredibly calm character with a sharp cricket brain. That is not to belittle the brave McCullum, who gave his team belief and thrilled with his belligerent batting. But Williamson’s coolness under fire sets him apart.
In this World Cup Ross Taylor was once again reliable Williamson’s batting partner who gave the team stability after the openers repeatedly failed to fire. Allrounders Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme also had their moments, the former with bat and ball and the latter with his miserly bowling. Trent Boult nabbed an historic hat-trick in an early game although some wickets were not conducive to his swing. Particularly impressive was Lockie Ferguson who added guile to his pace in mixing up his deliveries. Once again the fielding was often outstanding with Guptill, Boult, Neesham and Ferguson taking spectacular catches and wicketkeeper Tom Latham tidy behind the stumps. Finally, congratulations to live Sky Sport television commentators Ian Smith, Brendan McCullum and Simon Doull for an outstanding coverage of a tournament in which the ugly ducklings came so close to winning a cricket beauty contest. And, on the home front it, was also good to see former Howick Pakuranga Black Caps Kyle Mills and Mitch McClennan add their insightful expertise with such polish on the goggle box.
