Howick & Pakuranga Times editor Nick Krause captured this shot earlier this week from a reserve at Highbrook Business Park. It took a few months to await a full tide on Tamaki River, with no wind and the correct morning light. The white building on the left of the image across the water is the Otahuhu Badminton Club. Meanwhile, winter is still with us although the start of spring on September 1 isn’t that far away. The spring equinox (when day and night are of equal length) however falls on September 23.

Ponzi scheme broker jailed for six years A
Good Home's new B&B addition P12-13
Half Moon Bay foreign exchange broker who defrauded his clients of more than $7 million has been sentenced to six years and three months’ imprisonment. He is to serve a minimum period of imprisonment of two years and 11 months. Kelvin Clive Wood (70) was sentenced yesterday (Wednesday, July 24) at the Auckland District Court on representative charges of
‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Wood created a Ponzi scheme after his foreign exchange brokerage began to suffer net trading losses, the SFO said in a media statement. He used new investors’ funds to pay other investors their reported gains or to refund investment prin-

cipal. None of Wood’s clients were aware that their funds were being used to repay other investors. More than $7m of investment principal belonging to 18 investors was lost by the defendant over an eight-year period. The defendant knowingly reported fictitious profits and false or inaccurate foreign currency trades to investors. The acting director of the SFO, Rajesh Chhana, said, “Mr Wood
earned the trust of a group of investors through his personal and professional association with them. His breach of that trust is reflected in the sentence imposed today. The prosecution of such matters holds to account those who fail to conduct business in accordance with the expectations of a reputable market.” The Financial Markets Authority referred the case to the SFO to investigate in May 2017.

al Lott can’t walk too far anywhere in the Howick, Pakuranga or Botany shopping districts without being accosted for a chat and a catch-up. At 72, she has touched many lives in this community, most notably those of hundreds of girls, now young women. She is the face, heart and soul of Miss Howick, the beauty pageant, an anachronism that survived until as recently as 2012. To this day, Val is treated each month to a home visit from at least one former beauty pageant contestant. The girls have been paying homage for years. To understand this rapport, to know that it has become more endearing with the march of time, one has to consider two things – why Val

came to create the pageants and what the contestants got from it. It was the mid-1980s, for four or five consecutive years, Val noticed each Miss New Zealand on TV was a Howick or Pakuranga girl. And she was able to pick the winner each time. A single mother-of-three at the time and a frantically busy sales rep selling everything from hardware, cosmetics and brush ware, she chose to also create the Miss Howick Beauty Pageant. It was her love and became a local institution. And it was never for the money. “It was the passion. If you go into something for the glamour and high life, you’re off to a poor start,” says Val. “I’ve been blessed with an abundance of energy. I love doing things for others. If I say I’m going to do something, I’ll do it.” She needed that energy because she organised everything whether she was on the road or not. “In my car I had a typewriter and a sewing machine. I would sit in the motel at night; I would be writing up the script and sewing the girls’ costumes.” It was difficult with no capital. In the early years the Howick Business Association helped, as did Howick and Pakuranga Times’ directors Reay and Brian Neben. “We had no money. I wasn’t worried for money for me. Anything we raised went to venue hire, power, lighting, sound and prizes,” Val says.

And how did she find her beauties? “Mostly out and about. At first I was embarrassed approaching them and then I just pounced on them” she says. “It was definitely a gift for me. On stage you could tell Val’s girls...it was about their image, how they talked and held themselves.” Getting the girls ready was not easy either but her raison d’être and determination always got her and the newest contestants over the line. “I did have to learn over the years that everybody’s different,” Val says. “At the sashing ceremonies the girls were normally timid and meek then eight weeks later they’d be brimming with confidence.” The swimsuit section was never an issue for her or the girls. It accounted for five minutes of a 90 minute show.
“It’s a beauty pageant. I didn’t have any problems with it at all,” she says. “Some went on to love it and made good money out of it becoming bikini and underwear models.” Acting and modelling agencies also shoulder-tapped her girls. It was a stepping stone. Everything has its time though and after 17 years with Miss Howick Val took on and combined Miss Auckland, Miss Counties and Miss North Harbour to her yearly plan with all winners going onto Miss New Zealand. “Hence why I know over 2000 girls, their families and nanas and poppas.” Pageant contestants invariably blossomed through grooming and confidence classes – they started at age 16 – and there was also the sage advice handed down by their matriarch. Val would not countenance poor behaviour. “I was a stickler...no gossip and no nastiness. I never, ever had that problem with the girls,” she says. “I used to say to them, ‘do not become offended, you’re wasting valuable energy’ or “you must be a window person not a mirror person’.” The fall of the curtains on this big part of her life and those who stepped out onto the stage never ended. Val remained as close to them as they did to her. “Some mothers would say, ‘My daughter has more respect for you than us’.” Val’s straight forward answer was ‘I’m simply, not their mother’.”
www.times.co.nz
“One day I got home late and exhausted and I had a shower and got a call. I drove to Ponsonby and talked to one of the girls till midnight. She was at a loss. “I’ve had calls at 2 in the morning. I hear the love stories and broken heart stories.” Val, has also attended the weddings of some of the girls and their parents’ funerals as well as the funerals of former beauty pageant contestants. And she relishes their visits, her most recent from Danijela Unkovich (Miss Howick in 2009, Miss Universe NZ – her sister Natasha has won Miss Auckland and went on to be crowned Miss International NZ). “I’m so humbled,” Val says. “I had such a hard road as a young single mum. I had plenty of heartache and hardship. It really helped me. “The bond of love I have with the girls is nurturing.”

Fight over park safety heating up A
group of determined east Auckland residents battling to improve safety at their neighbourhood park aren’t ready to give up the fight. Locals who live near Tarnica Park in Northpark say they’re fed up with young people engaging in anti-social and dangerous behaviour at the public greenspace. They say teenagers gather there as early as 5pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and get into fights, vandalise the park’s playground equipment, and leave broken glass on the ground. An incident earlier this year allegedly resulted in a young male being injured with a weapon. One of the frustrated residents, Gordon Luke, was supported by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross when he took his concerns to the Howick Local Board’s business meeting on July 15. Mr Luke and several other locals previously presented a petition to the board in March that calls for lights and a security camera to be installed at the park. He told the board he met an Auckland Council officer on May 6 and was told he would hear back from the officer within three weeks, but has heard nothing since.
News bites Community Patrol looking for recruits ‘I’m too old’ - This is what the Community Patrol recruitment team heard during their recruitment drive in the main street of Howick last week. As a member of the Community Patrol age is no barrier, nor gender because all of the patrolling is done in the patrol cars. They are the eyes and ears of the NZ Police doing surveillance duties. It is non confrontational, just observation and reporting. If you wish to join other male and female patrollers and help preventing crime in the Howick/ Pakuranga area please email Howickpakuranga@gmail. com
“Not a single piece of information has come back from the board about what’s going on,” Mr Luke said. “Nobody has been and knocked on the residents’ doors except for me and Jami-Lee Ross. He’s been around and talked to residents … we are not happy because nothing has happened.” Board chairman David Collings said he understood a council officer was working with Mr Luke and would get back to him with a report. He asked Mr Luke what happened when he contacted the council officer to ask what was happening. Mr Luke said he had not done that. “You didn’t think of chasing her up?” Mr Collings asked. “Did you communicate with anyone on the board that that was the case? “She hasn’t come back to you and you didn’t think to call any of the [board] members to raise it with them?” Mr Luke said it isn’t his job to do that. “It is your responsibility to come back to us and tell us,” he said. Mr Ross then joined the verbal exchange. He said there’s about 1000 people living in the streets off

Tarnica Road and he’s knocked on the doors of about 80 per cent of them. “There’s a lot of frustration there around the park,” he said. “Mr Luke is coming here because he feels there hasn’t been enough communication from the council and … this is an avenue to speak directly to the people who repre-
sent him with regard to local governance. “So, respectfully, the aggressive approach to Mr Luke I don’t think is helping the situation.” Mr Collings said he wasn’t being aggressive. “I’m just trying to get to the bottom of the situation.” Collings later told the Times Mr
Luke had been encouraged to come to a “Talk To The Board” meeting instead which is more informal and board members could have engaged in a conversation about the matter. “I’m sure I speak on behalf of all board members when I say we are also disappointed at the timeframe some of these things take to get addressed. However in fairness to council officers, it is important that before we make any decision to spend ratepayer funds or where decisions may have consequential outcomes that we have all the information. The officer working on this is our Strategic Broker and I understand she has been working with Police, Parks, Community Safety and Auckland Transport to try and find a solution,” Collings said. “The reason for my questions below was due to my surprise that Mr Luke had chosen to come to the public meeting, where we have limited speaking ability, rather than just contacting myself or a board member directly.” The council officer and Mr Luke have organised a meeting next month for the residents with Mr Ross, local board members, and local police to discuss the problems at the park.
Hearings, question time with PM for Youth MPs Hayley Xie from Macleans College had the opportunity to represent Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown at the Youth Parliament in Wellington, which is held every three years. She tells us about her day at the Beehive. Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend Youth Parliament 2019 as the Youth MP representing Simeon Brown, National MP for Pakuranga. This event, in which 120 young people from across the country meet at Parliament every three years to mimic the workings of our real New Zealand Government, marked the pinnacle of our journey as Youth MPs. Upon arriving in Wellington, we attended an official tour and orientation evening. Our first official day started off with the opening ceremony where I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with the lovely Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy. Next, we headed into the debating chamber for Question Time with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and a few other Ministers, where I was able to ask the Minister of Finance on their
recent plans of reducing debt to 20 per cent of GDP within the next three years. The afternoon was jam-packed with select committee hearings and submissions, as well as a short caucus meeting with various MPs. Day two was similarly exciting, as we had our Legislative Debate on the Sustainable Energy mock bill, followed by an intense personal vote. After lunch, we got the opportunity to listen to other youth MPs passionately speak on a wide range of issues in the General Debate. Although these past two days seemingly flew past me, it has been an absolute pleasure to represent the community of Pakuranga at Youth Parliament 2019. I am continually grateful for having grown up in such an amazing community. I have gained so much experience during my tenure as Youth MP, and I

t’s becoming clear that the Labour-led Government’s idea of being ‘kind’ and ‘caring’ simply means throwing more money at a problem and hoping it goes away. The idea of incentivising work, and promoting a pathway that is proven to provide a better quality of life, simply doesn’t register. That approach is something reflected in the latest benefits statistics. What they show is that, since coming into power, this Government has seen 15,000 more Kiwis reliant on a jobseeker benefit. The jobseeker benefit is for people who can work but aren’t, for whatever reason. Under National, we required those on this benefit to prove they were actively seeking work in order to continue receiving state support. The fact there are now so many more people claiming this benefit is proof the new government is no longer enforcing those

requirements. The number of sanctions is down by more than 22 per cent since September 2017 and it’s important to remember that they are only imposed as a last resort for those who consistently fail to take their obligations seriously. Labour’s poor policies have seen the cost of living dramatically increase. Rents are up an average of $50 a week, there are more taxes on petrol and electricity prices are set to rise. Incomes aren’t going as far as they used to and despite employers crying out for new workers, there are thousands more people receiving a jobseeker benefit. Of course, there will always be people who need short-term assistance. The benefit is an important safety net for New Zealanders who fall on hard times and that is exactly how it should be used, to give a helping hand in times of need. But we know that long-term reliance on benefits provides

poor outcomes. It’s important for people to up-skill, develop professionally and remain relevant in the job market. Being out of the workforce for longer makes it harder to dive back in. National is aspirational for Kiwis. It’s important we’re all able to live happy and independent lives, and pursue a brighter future. We want Kiwis creating opportunities for themselves and their families, as we know that children in households where parents work go on to lead better lives. The Government has repeatedly claimed that one of its main priorities is combating child poverty. The increase in hardship grants, with over half a million of them since this government took power, shows that it’s simply getting tougher for families, not easier. Kiwis are struggling, and Labour has no plan. New Zealanders, more than ever, can’t afford this Government.

Teacher censured after being caught drinking at school A
teacher quit her job a day after being caught drinking alcohol on school grounds. Toni Osborne has been censured by the NZ Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal and the register annotated with conditions imposed to provide the Teaching Council with updates on her rehabilitation and to disclose the decision to employers for two years. The recently-released tribunal decision states that on December 6, 2017, the assistant principal of Howick Intermediate School, where Ms Osborne was working, detected a strong smell of alcohol on Ms Osborne’s breath. Ms Osborne initially denied that she had been drinking and said the smell was mouthwash. While looking to locate the mouthwash, the
principal saw a water bottle in Ms Osborne’s laptop bag which was about one third full, the decision reads. Ms Osborne agreed the principal could smell the contents but then walked past the principal and poured the contents down the drain, turned the tap on and tried to fill the bottle. The principal smelt the remaining contents of the bottle and detected a distinct smell of alcohol. When asked, Ms Osborne said there was water in the bottle and maintained she had not consumed alcohol. The following day – December 7, 2017 – Ms Osborne sent an email to the principal acknowledging that she had brought alcohol to the school and apologised for having it in her bag.
She acknowledged she should never have put the principal or the school in that position and that it was very thoughtless of her. Later in the day, Ms Osborne confirmed to the principal that she had consumed alcohol at the school and knew she had made a mistake. Ms Osborne resigned from the school that day. The case was referred to the Complaints Assessment Committee of the Teaching Council, who proceeded with a charge of serious misconduct in the Disciplinary Tribunal. Ms Osborne did not dispute that her conduct amounted to serious misconduct. The Tribunal found that her conduct amounted to serious misconduct on the grounds that it reflected adversely on her fitness to practise as a teacher, brought the
profession into disrepute and was of a severity to warrant referral to the council. In considering penalty, the tribunal saw the aggravating features (Ms Osborne’s premeditation and dishonesty) as symptomatic behaviour of an addict but agreed that Ms Osborne deserved some recognition for contacting the school the next day to acknowledge her behaviour. The tribunal was, however, sceptical of Ms Osborne’s explanation that the water bottle had been at school since the weekend and that she had taken a sip but not any more after realising what it was. The tribunal considered that Ms Osborne has taken steps towards her rehabilitation and thought transparency was an important fac-
tor in deterrence for her. Ms Osborne was censured and had conditions imposed on her practising certificate to provide the Teaching Council with updates on rehabilitative steps every three months for one year, and to disclose the decision to employers for two years. The register will be annotated for three years to reflect these orders. Ms Osborne applied for a permanent order for non-publication of her name. This application was heard in private and was declined. The reasons for this were set out in a separate decision which has been suppressed. Ms Osborne was ordered to pay 40 per cent of the CAC’s costs and 40 per cent of the tribunal’s costs.
Rotary awards celebrate stellar five Several community members were celebrated this week for their dedication and service to the community. On Tuesday evening the Howick Rotary Club awarded its annual Apprentice of the Year Awards and the Police Award in front of an audience of around 60 people. The winner of the Police Award was Sergeant Sarah Hill, who was recognised as a leader in the road policing field. Hill graduated from Royal NZ Police College in July 1996 and moved to Counties Manukau in 2011, where her focus on road policing began. Hill, the Counties Manukau road policing manager, was praised for her success in reducing serious crashes and her passion for keeping our roads and drivers safe. The apprentice awards saw four talented young tradesmen applauded for their positive
attitude towards learning their trade and dedication to further developing their skills. First place and a $1200 PlaceMakers voucher was awarded to 22-year-old Beachlands local Harley Peddie. Peddie completed his apprenticeship in March this year and is currently pursuing licensing under the LBP scheme. Second place was awarded to Johann Kroese and third equal place was presented to Nash Ali and Jordan Schache. Merino, possum and silk knits Locally owned and operated NZ Knit Co is very proud to produce a 100 per cent natural blend of Merino, possum and silk knitwear under the Mountain Country label. Being New Zealand designed, manufactured and using natural, sustainable fibres is very important to owners Troy and Kathy Woods. Possum fibre is one the warmest natural fibres
found in the world. The fibre is hollow, just like those of the polar bear and arctic fox, and as such provides superior warmth while being very light. When blended with the Mountain Country combination of Merino and silk, it is extremely light to wear while providing more than 50 per cent more warmth than wool of the same weight. In addition to that, all Mountain Country garments are fully machine-washable. Mountain Country garments
and accessories have been worn by adventurers to the extremes of Antarctica and the Arctic, as well as high on the Himalayas; but don’t feel you need to be an extreme adventurer to enjoy the benefit and style of their garments – they are equally at home while enjoying brunch in the heart of Howick on a chilly Sunday. Visit the NZ Knit factory shop at 1/113 Vincent Street Howick or have a look online at www. mountaincountry.co.nz. Possum fibres – as used in the Mountain Country blend – are hollow like those of the polar bear and are very warm indeed. Photo supplied

Change of guard at Somerville
I
t was a night when the stars came out to walk the red carpet at the Rotary Oscars - the glitzy changeover night for the Rotary Club of Somerville at the Apothecary, Howick. The A-listers were at their glamorous best as trigger-happy paparazzi got their best profiles. The turn-out was great as the suave presidents – past and present – from neighbouring Rotary Clubs including Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Highbrook, Howick, Pohutukawa Coast, East Tamaki Botany and Auckland South along with Rotary Club of Somerville club members, family, friends, past members attended the ceremonial installation of the new president. District Governor Gary Langford with wife Jan made quite an entrance and said they loved the vibrancy of the club members. Andrew Harvey, the MC for the evening, kept the tempo upbeat as American saxophonist Fred Baker and his talented daughter Maila set a beautiful tone for the evening.
Past President Lisa James gave a quick round-up of the year, followed by the district governor handing over the ceremonial chains to the current president Farida Master, and the new board of directors being introduced. A jazz dance performance by 11-year-old Millie Rowe from Neverland Studios added a special touch. Millie is heading to the US in two weeks for the World Hip Hop championship. Adding to the fun factor were the well-orchestrated Oscar Awards hosted by Rotarian Leone Dunn. A movie quiz hosted by Nivzer and Ferzeen Dadabhoy had district chair for Rotary Foundation Jenny Herring’s team and the Times Media team competing hard for the prize, which was eventually won by board member Bini Homavazir. The month of July marks the onset of a new year in the Rotary calendar. There is a change of guard as a new president and board of directors take on the responsibility of planning service projects and
fund raising to make a difference in communities worldwide. Currently the 114-year-old Rotary International has 1.2m Rotarians working on the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. New specs with Specsavers Pakuranga
ADVERTORIAL CP2822A
Eye tests play a huge part in making sure your eyes stay healthy. The team at Specsavers Pakuranga want to help you by making eye tests easy and accessible. And while deterioration of your eye health can be scary, early detection gives you the best chance at preventing it from getting worse. Many children start needing prescription eyewear in their teens, as this is a prime time for the development of nearsightedness, or myopia. Specsavers Pakuranga wants to encourage kids from a young age to get into the habit of regular eye testing, so for children 15 years and under, Specsavers Pakuranga offers free eye tests. Recently Specsavers Pakuranga sponsored Manurewa Intermediate School’s Rugby 7’s team’s trip to the Aims Games in Tauranga. As part of the sponsorship they had the team and their teacher come in for eye tests. “We are committed to Kiwi’s living a healthy lifestyle and that includes sports just as much as it does eye health,” says retail
Director Rayonee Henry. The eye tests discovered that three of the team needed glasses and two others needed to come back in a few months for further eye testing. “It was a huge success to be able to help the team look after their eyesight. Uncorrected vision problems can affect all aspects of their lives including their studies, their job and even their social life or ability to play sport.” Rayonee says even if you consider your eye sight to be perfect and unproblematic, it’s worth getting a check-up every two years. “Often people don’t think too much about their eye sight because they might not notice a big difference in their sight from day to day but your eyes can actually tell us a lot about your general health even if they don’t feel any different.” Specsavers Pakuranga has also welcomed a new OCT Machine which Rayonee says has changed the game in detecting early signs of eye disease. “This machine uses light waves to take cross section pictures of your retina allowing us to see each individual layer of the eye,”

she says. “This gives us such a detailed picture of what is going on beneath the surface of the eye allowing us to detect early signs of glaucoma, age related degeneration and cataracts.” She says since offering the use of this machine with every eye test, earlier signs of eye conditions are being detected, giving patients the best chance to tackle vision problems before they get serious. And if your eye test indicates
you’re in need of some new specs to give your eyes a helping hand, there’s no better time to stock up on prescription glasses. Until Sunday July 28, Specsavers Pakuranga are running a spend and save promotion. n Purchase two pairs of glasses from the $299 range and get $25 off. n Purchase two pairs of glasses from the $369 range and get $50 off.

Barry O’Shaughnessy owner of the vibrant and welcoming restaurant, bar and hotel says that after 35-40 years, the hotel is back in business. “The iconic hotel has bounced back into being. The original hotel had accommodation. ” he says. “I have thinking about it for years and finally it’s all done. We have upgraded it to the highest standards.” The Good Home offers seven single rooms and five double rooms. The 12

stairway that speaks of old world charm. High quality bed linen with white crisp sheets, fluffy pillows and perfectly made beds add to the relaxed feel of the place. A common lounge area and a
kitchen are ideal for a large family group or bunch of friends that want to hang out together. There is even a small deck attached to the lounge area for guests to sit out and leisurely sip on to a glass of wine or have a quiet moment. Last week, Barry invited the business community in Howick to have a peak at the accommodation and a glass of bubbles. The unanimous verdict was: It’s just what Howick needed. Convenient, reasonably priced and well designed, they said. “Also you step out of the hotel, you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner anywhere on Picton Street or you can celebrate at the pub with a sundrenched leafy courtyard below, that offers the best wood fired pizzas in town,” said one of the guests. “A late night at the pub and all you have to do is crawl up to bed, two minutes later,” added another. “We’ve long waited for something like this.” The Good Home is taking bookings with Airbnb as well as causal bookings. Yes, they are open for business.

Let’s wait and see
I would like to note to Auckland Transport the first two weeks (of the T2/Bus Lane on Pakuranga Rd) have coincided with the school holidays. Because of this there would/ has been a reduction in the usual levels of traffic on the road in the peak period. I would be interested to see there stats over the next two to three weeks compared to the first two. The 50m clearance at the junctions is not a big enough space to safely move from one lane to the other. I have witnessed a couple of near misses already. It is an accident waiting to happen.
Hayley Wright
Wait for the end of holidays I’ve read your article in the Thursday July 18th edition (How are you finding the T2 lane?)and am surprised there is no mention of it being school holidays. I think you should be asking this question in a week or two once all usual traffic is on the road then you’ll get a more realistic picture.

supermarket carpark. At least three times in the last two weeks, other vehicles travelling down the second lane also going to the supermarket, have turned left across the front of me or straight at my vehicle, with twice these motorists venting anger towards me in the carpark. The defence in each case for driving dangerously is they did not realise that the lane designations were for a limited morning time of 3 hours in the morning. Subsequently, I have observed the great reluctance of vehicles to use the designated lanes in both directions on the highway outside of the prescribed times that are effective and that the designations have effectively reduced Pakuranga Highway by one lane for the majority of the day. In my opinion it becomes debatable then of what is really being achieved by the new lane designations and the added dangers created throughout the rest of the day.
Many motorists are finding the new lane designations confusing. Many / most will not use these lines outside of the designated times they are in force. Examples that I have had are that Allan Bridge, Howick travelling to my chosen supermarket early afternoon I turn left into the designated lane from Abercom- Abolish the T2/bus lane are not bie then 50SAMS_Half_RangerDemo0719_ALL.pdf metres later, left into the Travel 1 times 9/07/19 1:33 aPMgood meas-
ure. Confusion and near misses are more important. My observations are as follows. I daily drive Fortunes right turn into Pakuranga Highway, left into Gossamer. Right turn into the Highway off Fortunes is slower as we are now turning into 2 lanes instead of 3. Many are ignoring the T2 and using the lane with no passenger. The 50km/h advisory is confusing. I thought it overrode the speed limit signs. In any case, it is ignored. The left turn into Gossamer is a shambles. I regularly move into the T2 early, then have to keep a sharp lookout for those moving left later. This is a hard move for most drivers as vision is only through the left mirror and the car already in the lane is moving fast while the car trying to move across is stopped. The bus stops in the left lane between Cascades and Gossamer cause motorists to switch lanes then back again. What should happen? Abolish the T2/buslane. If not then stop the T2 200m before Gossamer.
Change the T2 times 7 to 9 – 6 to 10 is ridiculous. Recess the bus stops off the T2 lane. It is absolute madness for traffic to have to stop in a T2 supposedly fast moving lane.
Tony Mille
AT has got this right
We agree with Auckland Transport and support the promotion of public transport on Pakuranga Rd. It is our opinion that Simeon Brown has simply got this one wrong and we have just written to him to let him know this. Public transport, walking, cycling and car pooling are all valid alternatives to single use occupancy vehicles and all help to make the existing road network more reliable. Not everyone can drive (children, elderly, vulnerable) and bus priority lanes are part of the solution. We usually commute off peak to avoid traffic on Pakuranga Rd and find that 85 per cent of the time Pakuranga Rd traffic is busy but not congested. In our opinion the AMETI project is a game changer in terms of the strategic public transport to the
south east of our fine city and all efforts should concentrate on supporting and accelerating this project. Our family support the swift implementation of the next phases of AMETI including the Reeves Rd flyover and the proposed major public and private investment in Pakuranga town centre. Build it and they will come. Progress AMETI. Change and growth is good. Embrace it or move on.

Empty buses
I drive from Pakuranga to Howick and back almost every day and two things I have noticed: ■■ 1. 90 per cent of the buses I see are almost empty, we jokingly call it ‘The Empty Bus Company’. ■■ 2. The traffic lights at the Glenmore junction are only on green for 12 seconds.

ActivePanel to schools
I have just read this article ‘Owairoa Primary the only school in New Zealand to be gifted a smart class’ and would like to raise the point that Shelly Park School and Bucklands Beach Primary School have been using this technology for 3 years and 2 years respectively . I know, I provided it to them. We also give away a number of our ActivePanel each year to schools right though NZ. Last year there were 5 winners and we will be doing the same again this year.

Last year, Howick Primary School joined the “Trees for Survival” environmental education programme which involves young people growing and planting native trees to restore natural habitats by helping landowners revegetate erosion prone land, improve stream flow and water quality and increase biodiversity. In July 2018, a large box of tiny seedlings arrived and the children and teachers replanted these into plastic bags and then left them to grow in the newly established nursery area. Sue Crawshay, Programme coordinator for the Auckland Council based programme, commented that the trees had grown at double the normal rate as you can see by the pictures. The purpose of the programme is “to create community partnerships by engaging schools, their community, local businesses and councils all working together to restore our natural heritage.” As such, Howick Primary school is looking for a business partner who can sponsor the programme for this and subsequent years. It costs around $1000 each year to pay for seedlings, soil and maintenance of the plants. A sponsor will be able to advertise their support all over the nursery area as well as a profile on the school website and Facebook page. Call the Principal, Leyette Callister, if you think you can help.
Senior students Hadassah de Ridder and Felix Stephen show how much the plants have grown in one year, ready for planting out in Paparimu. Photos supplied
We are having our first planting out on a Hunua property on Thursday 1st August and principal Leyette Callister is very excited to take a group of enthusiastic students and staff out to plant. Can you help us? We need any able bodied volunteers to help us with the planting. We will leave the Howick
Primary School in Willoughby Ave on Thursday morning around 9am so please call the school office on 534 6082 if you can help us with digging holes and assisting students with planting. We expect it to take three or four hours to plant everything. Refreshments will be supplied.

Howick College provides “amazing opportunities to meet new people and try new experiences, so give everything a go and don’t be nervous about the next five years of college life.” That was the message Year 9 student Max Louw, gave to prospective students attending our recent open night. This sentiment was echoed by fellow Year 9 student, Juliet Curwood, who agreed that Howick College is “packed with fun and interesting activities” she didn’t even know existed. Because high quality education encompasses more than just the classroom, our students have the opportunity to join a wide variety of co-curricular activities including clubs, sports teams and service groups as well as performance, peer-support and leadership opportunities. Both Max and Juliet admitted that they remembered feeling anxious about their first day at Howick College and were nervous about the bigger environment and new expectations. However, with the support systems in place and with help from staff and senior students, they quickly fitted in. Juliet explained that “at Howick College, everyone is accepting of each other and we celebrate different cultures and student successes.

Howick College is a fun and safe environment and teachers wish the best for their students.” Max also shared his concern that he would be overwhelmed by boring homework and was pleased to find that homework was usually an interesting extension of class work or the completion of exciting projects. For students needing extra support, Howick College offers a Homework and Tutoring Centre that is available to all students before and after school on a Thursday. Students can either take advantage of a quiet, supportive place to work or book free tutoring sessions with a senior student tutor. Max and Juliet are both part of the Innovation Stream Programme that is available for Year 9, 10 and 11 students. This programme recognises that our students are entering a very different world to that of previous generations. It provides those involved the opportunity to take part in a stimulating and innovative
curriculum focussed on developing creative future problem solvers who use knowledge meaningfully across all core subjects. Howick College offers various ways for students to engage in learning that is relevant to them and those with a passion for sports and physical education, may apply for the Howick College Sport in Education Programme. Successful applicants are given the opportunity to reach their full academic potential using sport and active learning as a common theme across all curriculum areas. All new students wishing to enrol into Howick College for 2020 must attend an enrolment meeting where students and families meet with a senior staff member who can answer any questions to ensure that the transition into Howick College is as smooth as possible. For further information and to register your time slot, please visit the Howick College website www. howickcollege.school.nz.

Silver Ferns do us proud H
ow fitting Silver Ferns stalwarts Laura Langman, Maria Folau, Casey Kopua and Katrina Rore will bow out of international netball as reigning world champions having clinched the title 52-51 against Australia in Liverpool on Monday. It may not be this year for all of them but it certainly will be before the next world championship in four year years time. Each has been a special player, the dynamic Langman, aged 33, our best centre since Sandra Edge after converting from wing defence. Although she made some uncharacteristic misses in the final before goaling 28 of 35 attempts, the unflappable Folau, 32, remains a beautiful shooter from any distance within the circle. Kopua (nee Williams), 34, who came to fame as a Magic teenager alongside Langman and developed under current Ferns coach Noeline Taurua, no longer has the same springheeled elevation after suffering patella tendon and ankle ligaments injuries. But she retains her fierce competiveness and sharp court brain, as does Rore who effortlessly made the switch from goal keep to wing defence. Interestingly two of the stars

within a great team effort were goal attack Ameliaranne Ekenasio and goal keep Jane Watson while wing attack Gina Crampton fed the circle nicely. Renowned for her ability to feed her goal shoots with good passes, Ekenasio’s own goal scoring success soared throughout this tournament, relieving pressure on the brilliant Folau. of her opponents, lively goal keep Watson made many outstanding interceptions and deflections to deny England and Australia goals in a nailbiting semi-final and final won by two and one-point respectively. Those results tell an accurate tale of a hard-fought competition in which hosts England finished third ahead of South Africa for bronze medal honours. That fourth ranked New Zealand could strike gold after the disappointment of the last Commonwealth Games in which they failed to medal says much for their skill and courage and the vision of coach Taurua whose Sunshine Lightning has won the last two Australian Super Netball League titles. Langman is a key member of that team and it was Taurau who successfully sought she be given dispensation to return to the Silver Ferns after Netball NZ had made her ineligible. That might work for rugby’s All Blacks where there is so much depth, but the Silver Ferns need their best no matter where they live. Agnew’s Angle error ridden 20-16 scare against Argentina in Buenos Aires. Hopefully they will find room for both Ardie Savea and Sam Cane alongside captain Kieran Read among the loose forwards. Both were outstanding against the Pumas with Savea’s pace off the back of the scrum giving him an attacking sharpness that the still gifted Read no longer has. It was also good to see Ngani Laumape continue his tryscoring habit in a tight test in which Brodie Retallick’s 50m intercept runaway was the only other try the All Blacks managed against an impressive defence. With Sevu Reece the only Crusader to play against the Pumas, the availability of the others should do much to strengthen the team against a Springboks side that walloped the Wallabies 35-17 despite resting many of their best. Hence expect a titanic battle between two great rivals. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Gymnastics competition attracts record entries Ryan Fox’s efforts at Royal Portrush saw him post the lowest back nine in the Photos supplied tournament’s history after the first round.
“You certainly don’t expect to do that. But it was nice to just get out of my own way and hit some decent golf shots and be a part of such a great event.” Fox, son of All Black great Grant Fox, posted on Twitter on the Friday: “Well...that was fun! First time I’ve been able to say that in a while, and it’s a pretty cool feeling to make history and hold the record for the lowest back 9 (29) in an Open Championship.” Meanwhile, his tie for 16th place earned him US$126,313 ($187,454). He finished on 2 under 282 for the tournament. The win-
ner, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, finished on a 15 under 269 and won US$1.9m. Fox posted on social media that it had been an incredible week at Royal Portrush. “Unbelievable golf course, brilliant craic and stoked to record my best major finish with a T16. Huge congratulations to the man Shane Lowry, seriously impressive...thankful for all the awesome Kiwi support out there!! So proud to represent NZ and congrats to the Silver Ferns (who won the netball World Cup overnight Sunday).”
The Howick Gymnastics Club Annual Recreational Competition has attracted a record number of entries this year. Some 425 competitors from across Auckland will compete in the two-day event designed to give the region’s recreational gymnasts a chance to show off the skills. “This is a big time of year for gymnastics when competitions are held nationwide for gymnasts of all levels,” says Howick Gymnastics Club centre manager Miranda Beattie. “It’s fantastic that our recreational event has attracted so many entries this year. That’s great for our club and great for the sport.” Boys and girls aged 5-17 years will compete in artistic gymnastics and tumbling on July 27 and 28 and are judged on the skills they have mastered, artistry and form.

“It’s a chance for the competitors to show off their routines, for parents to see the progress their children have made, and for everyone to have some fun which is so important in keeping kids excited and motivated about sport,” she says. Miranda says competitions are an important fundraiser for the club that relies on the support of the community to keep operating. “We’ve had tough times of late that have tested the club, which has been a part of the local community for more than 40 years. We’re thrilled and very grateful that this competition is so well supported and invite anyone interested in gymnastics to drop by the club and take a look.” ■■ For information contact: Howick Gymnastics Club enquiries@howickgym.co.nz Ph: 576 840
TEACHING STYLE:
Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

rofessional golfer Ryan Fox, from Beachlands, recorded his best major finish after tying for 16th place at the British Open which finished on Sunday. Fox, ranked 95th in the world and 51st on the European Tour, made world sporting headlines on Friday after his first round at the 148th Open Championship. He became the first person in Open history to score a back-nine of 29 after shooting a three-under 68 at Royal Portrush. Fox, 32, bogeyed three of his first nine to lie three-under and in a share of third, two shots off the lead after last Thursday’s round. He made six birdies in his final seven holes at the County Antrim course, Northern Ireland, to earn himself a spot in the record books as the first person ever to break 30 on the back-nine of an Open Championship. Fox, who has missed his last seven cuts in a row, said of the record: “That’s pretty cool. I did actually ask my caddie, ‘had anyone shot 29 for nine holes in a major’, and I’m sure that happened. He said, ‘Shut up, and just hole the putt’.
