Crash victims named By THERESE HENKIN

T

he teenagers who died in a devastating car crash on Friday morning have since been named as 17-year-old Nathaniel (Nathan) Quist and 13-year-old Ella Berrington. The crash that claimed their lives took place at around 4.30am on Friday when the car they were driving crashed into a commercial building in Udys Road/Johns Lane. One media report says the car apparently came off the road, snapping off a lamp post, before going down a bank and crashing into the car park of the building. The vehicle was discovered hours later and police were called to the incident at around 7.20am. Following the crash, the dark coloured Honda Accord they were driving was reported stolen, police have confirmed. Police believe speed was a factor, with the car breaking into four parts upon impact with the building. Over the weekend, heartfelt messages to the two teens have flooded social media. Ella Berrington was a Year 9 student at Pakuranga College. A family member told the NZ Herald that the Berrington family was “hurting so deeply right now”. “Our family needs time and space to grieve and pull everything together to have the best send off for Ella,” they said. “It’s going to be tough and there are no words that could help make this situation any easier.” Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams has reportedly been in contact with the family over the weekend and says he is focussed on giving them the support they need. In an email to parents he said her death would “create a void” in the school. The email also granted students permission to attend Ella’s funeral as an excused absence and parents were encouraged to seek out guid-

ance councillors for their children if needed. Bucklands Beach Intermediate, which Ella also attended, posted a tribute to the youngster, expressing their condolences to her loved ones. “A life lost too young. With love from us all,” the post read. A friend of Ella’s took to Instagram to say that she “can’t believe” her best friend is gone. “We done so much together and I thought we could do so much more, I thought there would have been many more years to come,” she wrote. Nathan, 17, was a Tamaki College student who expressed on Facebook his desire to one day join the navy. His uncle Lyndell Juggernau told Stuff that Nathan was the oldest of four siblings and was “courageous” and “full of heart”. Another family member posted to Facebook “What a man he was going to become...we will miss you and love you always.” A friend of Nathan’s expressed how much she and others would miss him. “For you Nathan my brother, words cannot explain how much me and everyone else will miss you. You were taken way too soon,” she wrote. This week a large group of around 20 friends gathered in the car park where the teenagers died to remember and say goodbye to Nathan and Ella. The walls of the car park are covered in heartfelt messages for the pair. The crash is still under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit. ■ As part of their enquiries, police want to hear from anyone who witnessed a vehicle matching the description of the dark-coloured Honda Accord driving near Pakuranga Road around 4.30am on Friday July 20. Contact Constable Gabrielle Griffiths on 021 192 1542 or Sergeant Ben Thornton on 021 191 0737.

ocal children stepped it up over the school holidays in an effort to do some good in the community. Auckland Council’s pools and leisure division decided all school holiday programme providers – there are 11 sites across Auckland - would hold a Make a Difference Day for all children where they give back to their local community, said team leader recreation at Howick Leisure Centre, Amy Yeoman. Although we do a charity fundraising day later in the year, the aim of this day was to do some good in our local community,” she said. “We are super proud of our holiday programme kids. About 140 children took part with such great attitudes.” At Howick Leisure: ■■ The 5-7-year-olds made cards for their local heroes (fire, police and ambulance) where they all wrote personal notes to the staff protecting the community ■■ The 8-10-year-olds visited the Pakuranga Park Retirement Village and sang songs and played recreation activities with the Seniors ■■ The 11-13-year-olds visited Bramley Reserve and took to the beach with rubbish bags, cleaning up rubbish from the water and shore. “How great would it be if other holiday programme providers out East did a similar day,” said Amy. “There are so many groups/things

Uxbridge Arts centre is set for a powerhouse night with Lloyd Spiegel on Friday August 10. Australian bluesman Spiegel brings his high energy solo show back to New Zealand as he returns with a new show, new tales and two new albums. He’ll be playing the Uxbridge Arts Centre as part of his North Island tour. Spiegel’s incredible command of the guitar and powerful stage presence is a must-see for blues and guitar fans alike and those who just love to be ‘entertained’. The guitarist has won rave reviews from Rolling Stone American magazine: ‘A revelation, the consummate performer, an Oz Blues & Roots icon’. Terry Riley’s review in The Age, Melbourne says: `Spiegel is all presence, authority, rhythm and drive. He epitomizes control, soul and passion with white hot ferocity and blazing instrumental mastery, dangerous enough to spark a destructive inferno’. A touring artist since age 11, with frequent visits to the USA, Europe, Canada and Japan, Lloyd has a unique story to tell and blends jaw-dropping guitar playing with powerful song writing, comedy and storytelling, delivering a show that’s truly on the cutting edge of the blues genre and a concert experience like no other. Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, July 26, 2018 — 3

Six standing for council seat

In May the community suffered a tragic loss with the death of beloved Howick Ward Councillor and Olympian Dick Quax. His passing left a vacancy on the Auckland Council, prompting a by-election. Nominations closed last Wednesday and six declared they were standing. Last week we featured three candidates – Phil Taylor, Damian Light and Jim Donald. Today we bring you profiles of the other three. Voting documents will be posted to eligible voters from Wednesday, August 22, with voting closing at 12 noon on Thursday, September 13. transport needs to be efficient and accessible, and our most vulnerable in the community need to be protectedMy commitment and involvement stands as a testament, I am invested in our community. I represent our community. A vote for me can assure you there will be transparency and accountability on our council and your opinions and concerns WILL be received.” ■■ Olivia is 23 years old and works as an in-home carer. She is not a student as was previously printed in last week’s paper.

Olivia Montgomery

“I’m back! I am Olivia Montgomery and I have stepped up again for the opportunity to be a Howick Councillor. Since the previous local election nothing has stopped the passion and commitment I have for our community. I have been busy working with, and advocating for people with disabilities and accessibility issues. I run a harm reduction organisation focusing on delivering progressive education on drugs, sexual consent and mental health for young people. I continue to encourage the arts and perform with a number of local groups and have been working with residents on cleaning up beaches and holding residential developers accountable for waste. As Auckland is changing we need to be assured transparency on developments affecting our residents. Infrastructure needs improving, our storm drainage system needs to be assessed, public

Jessica Collings

Jessica Collings, 21, the daughter of Howick Local Board chairman David Collings, wants to stand on her own merits and would never take anything for granted. She hopes she will be able to convey her policies throughout the campaign and just asks that people consider them when voting. A lot has been conveyed to Jessica from her father over the years. “I’ve had a lot of ear bashing from Dad about what council is doing or not doing, or how it’s wasting money on certain things,” she said. “I also hate waste, I think everyone does. I think the council needs to be more efficient - we shouldn’t have become a super city otherwise. I feel council needs to take heed of what the community want, listen to those who pay their wages and get back to core business.”

Again, Jessica is very aware of things, such as the fact that Howick, Pakuranga, Botany ratepayers pay almost $100 million annually. Jessica wants to see that more of this money is spent within our area instead of going to pet projects within Auckland. Important projects such as AMETI and sorting out traffic congestion has taken far too long and she will see the issues get action. “Library, arts and aquatic facilities need to be developed within our growing community now, not later,” she said.

coming into the area,” she says. She even has advice for her father and the local board should the view shaft be removed and that is that they should call for their own plan change to reinstate the zoning around the hill to what was in the former Manukau District Plan and Howick Borough Council plans prior to that. Having lived her whole life in the area, Jessica has been very involved in everything from the local gymnastics club, dance, athletics club, netball etc and went to school within the ward “I feel lucky to live in such a great area, and look forward to the opportunity to give back and work to improve our community,” said Miss Collings She has experience working in hospitality and retail, and enjoys and prides herself in the desire to deliver what people want. She is currently on an assignment to Camp America looking after and instilling life skills to a group of young people based in the California hills of the United States and looks forward to returning home shortly.

She also feels that councillors have let down the area through the introduction of things such as the Unitary Plan. Changes around Stockade Hill should never have been allowed to happen. “What were our councillors thinking? If we lose the view shaft, it will be a travesty for Howick and for visitors

Paul Young

Paul Young came to New Zealand some 30 years ago and settled in Howick where he and his wife Rosana raised two children while he established a marketing, concert promotion and photographic business in Somerville. At the last election when two

councillors were elected for Howick, he came third behind the late Dick Quax and is now making a determined effort to fulfil a longheld ambition to represent the area and take the simple message to “City Hall” that the people of east Auckland should be able to travel easily between where they live, work, shop and play. By sensible he means shuttle buses to take people from their own streets to bus or railway station transport hubs, so encouraging people to use public transport and, as for cost, the shuttles should be free which Mr. Young argues would be cheaper than building more roads and car parks. On his other priority of law and order, he believes in a strong police presence in the community. “We need to know that when we need them, the police will be there.” He also wants great transparency of council business.

owick Rotary held its annual Ken McIntosh Memorial Building and Construction Industry Apprentice of the Year Award ceremony at its dinner meeting last Tuesday. The awards recognise outstanding building and construction industry apprentices and is organised by Howick Rotary in conjunction with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and Manukau Institute of Technology. In introducing the awards, Rotarian John Osborne gave a history of the awards and the reasons behind their inception. Ken McIntosh founded the awards eight years ago based on a need to encourage more apprentices into the building and

construction industry. Ken was associated with the industry through his ownership of McIntosh Timber Laminates. By working with the BCITO and MIT, Ken established the awards as a regular annual event with sought after prizes for the winning apprentices in association with Placemakers Pakuranga. Howick Rotary named the awards after Ken when he passed away and maintain an ongoing link with the family through Ken’s son Grant and honorary member, Ken’s wife Maureen. John also mentioned that “the industry was in a much better position today than when the awards started with in excess of 11,000 apprentices in training

nationally”. He went on to say that he “was greatly impressed by the quality of the young men and their attitude towards learning their trade and then developing themselves further through ongoing study”. John Cole, area manager – South Auckland, for the BCITO thanked Howick Rotary for establishing the awards and said that they had become an important event on the BCITO calendar each year. The winning apprentices for 2018 all received a new claw hammer with the overall winner Shane Taylor receiving a $1200 voucher, 2nd place awardee Shaun Cross receiving a $800 voucher and 3rd place awardee Timothy Faleatua receiving a $600 voucher.

Police seeking witnesses after teenager killed By Therese Henkin

T

he 19-year-old who was hit by a car near a house party in Half Moon Bay earlier this month has died, and police are seeking witnesses. Xavier Browne was struck by a car a short distance away from a party at an address on Casuarina Rd at around 10.30pm on Saturday July 7. Police arrived at the scene shortly after and Browne was rushed to hospital in critical condition. It was confirmed by police last Wednesday that Browne died five days later from his injuries. Tributes to Browne have flooded in on social media calling him a promising sportsman, a valued friend and loving son. “I will c u again my son Xavier. I love u and I never 4get u,” his father Kutz Browne wrote. Acting Inspector Chris Barry, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau East, says the accident is under investigation. A neighbour told Stuff that his wife had contacted noise control at around 9.30pm. He also estimated there were around 500 people attending the party. However when police attended the property, they estimated there were fewer than 100 people at the party.

“We are not aware of receiving any complaints in relation to a party on that street at any stage of the night and the first time we were called to the street was as a result of this serious crash,” says Barry. “The priority for police at the scene was to deal with the crash scene, which was under scene guard due to the fact that the Serious Crash Unit was conducting a scene examination due to the seriousness of the crash.” Police also spoke with the organiser of the party. “We were satisfied that there was no breach of the peace or disorderly behaviour at the address and police had no concerns in relation to the party. “The only occasions where police are able to close down a party is if there is disorderly

behaviour, unlawful activity taking place or fears for the safety of those inside an address.” Police remained at the crash scene for several hours as a scene examination took place. At around 11pm, Police arrested a male for disorderly behaviour relating to an incident near the crash scene. A 20-year-old male was charged with disorderly behaviour and cannabis possession and will be appearing in the Manukau District Court in September. Auckland Council have since confirmed they received three noise complaints that night for a Casuarina Rd property. An Excessive Noise Direction was served and a call for seizure of equiptment was ordered but Steve Pearce, manager regulatory complaince says council officers were unable to access the property, which was already blocked off by police. Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the crash occur and have not yet spoken to police. Police also want to hear from anyone who has any photos or videos of the incident or the aftermath. If you have any information please contact Constable Will O’Connell at the Serious Crash Unit from the Counties Manukau Police on 263 2761.

It is not very often a husband and wife team are appointed as principals of local primary schools. Must-do list for a warmer drier home

With winter well upon us, there is a lot of talk about cold damp houses and sickness. These two areas go hand in hand - rectifying one consequently reduces the other. Old and even brand new homes can be cold and damp. If your home needs a transformation from cold and damp to warm and dry, here are SAYR’s five key proven tips to make the transition from one to the other. 1. Insulate. Refresh or top up insulation in your ceiling. Old insulation loses its effectiveness, thickness and R value rating. It does not last forever. 2. Heat up. The World Health Organisation recommends homes should be at a minimum of 18 deg. Many homes don’t get close to this. Heat pumps are a highly efficient and effective

Guitar anyone? If you’ve been trying to teach yourself to play the guitar and are not getting the results you hoped for, Auckland Guitar School can help. Conveniently located in the heart of Howick Village, the School has been steadily building its reputation as Auckland’s only specialist modern guitar school for the last six years. “We make sure the lessons are fun, and that everyone gets really solid foundations to their playing so they can take it wherever they want,” says owner Dylan Kay. Trained at Berklee College of Music, Boston, and going on to teach at the biggest guitar school in Europe, Dylan built up a comprehensive curriculum uniquely tailored to meet the needs of the student while simultaneously teaching them the fundamentals of guitar, which he then brought with him to New Zealand. The School caters for all ages and levels. “Many of our

Year 12 and 13 students from Pakuranga College recently presented the latest version of their Virtual Reality sledding game at the New Zealand game developers’ meet-up at the Auckland University of Technology campus. design and other professionals with an interest in the virtual gaming world to exchange notes. Many attendees were keen to try out the students’ game. The latest iteration of the game is more polished with an updated release due to hit Steam very soon. Steam is a digital distribution platform, which offers digital rights management, multiplayer gaming, video streaming and social networking Prior to the meet-up, students went on a tour of computer science departments at AUT, Auckland University and Media Design School, where they got

an opportunity to see projects currently in development by students and various facilities. Ex-Pakuranga College student, Rory Buchanan was on hand to talk about the electric racing car that the engineering department is developing. The students also got to try out the full-size motion capture facility at AUT. To see these technologies at work in an authentic context, the group visited Method Digital, a company currently developing a variety of virtual reality and augmented reality solutions for New Zealand applications.

Mixed messages from Government on mental health

Dr Hilton King and Dr Leong Goh

Mental health is a significant issue facing New Zealand, with Labour coming to Government promising to make radical reforms to the sector. We were repeatedly told that New Zealand wasn’t doing enough, even after National allocated $100 million in last year’s Budget for a mental health package which would deliver 17 new initiatives designed to improve our ability to support and treat those with mental health issues. This package has now largely been scrapped with the new Government instead putting its effort into a mental health review and preferring a wideranging conversation rather than action. But action is what’s needed, and the initiatives delivered as part of National’s package would have made a real difference now and taken an evidence-based approach to

Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga adapt and trial overseas ideas to ensure we were providing the best care. One of these scrapped initiatives was an $8 million pilot programme that would have seen mental health experts join police and paramedics responding to mental health incidents. Police spend approximately 280 hours a day dealing with mental health cases, and while they do an incredible job, they are not mental health professionals and would have benefitted immensely from the extra support. The pilot had universal backing from those on the

frontline of mental health, including mental health expert Nigel Fairley who said earlier this year the pilot was his number one priority from our overall package. And this was just one initiative. Others that were scrapped included $5m towards ongoing support for those who attempted suicide, $25m to expand primary and community mental health and addiction services like Youth One Stop Shops, and $10m towards distance and e-therapy trials, as technology plays an important role in tailored convenient care. For a Government that claims it cares, this decision to cancel funding to support our police makes no sense. We cannot afford to sit around and wait for an inquiry that will tell us what we already know. Actions speak louder than words.

Men In Business Happy Birthday Graham Keeping in step with the times, Howick Village Optometrists (HVO) is at the forefront of vision care. This is reflected in the many years of experience the staff at HVO have accumulated. With 46 years experience under his belt, Graham Jenkins more than anyone is a testament to this. Not many optical practices employ a trained Dispensing Optician and HVO is lucky to have two! Why is a dispenser important? Graham Jenkins Because they are the people who make sure you are comfortable wearing spectacles. They take the prescription and help to select the appropriate lenses to suit your lifestyle or work requirements Graham is rock steady in his belief that everybody should have an opportunity to see the world with clear and healthy vision, which is why everything he does designed to help clients achieve such a goal. Updating equipment and keeping abreast of the ever changing frames available is just one part

of running a successful practice. “Our relationship with our clients is one of the most important aspects of our business,” says Graham. “We also have to keep up with the fast-paced technological changes happening almost daily. That is why we have to be available to clients on many platforms, including social media.” Being an independent practice, HVO is proud of its family history and its ability to provide that personal touch locals have come to appreciate. Graham has reached the stage in life where he likes the odd day off so he can hit the golf course and know that he is leaving the business in the hands of a team of well trained, community minded professionals. Graham would like to take this opportunity to thank the fabulous people of the area. “Howick is a great place to work, it really is a village, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY GRAHAM FROM YOUR TEAM!

Whiskerz — 26 years on... Terry Horan was just 17-years-old when he first started out as a barber at the Pakuranga Shopping Centre. Now 40 years later, sitting in his eclectic barber shop Whiskerz Hairstyles for Men at Cook Street Plaza in Howick, he says that the best thing about his profession is the camaraderie he shares with his fellow barbers as well as his clients. “I’ve had some amazing customers over the last 26 years at this locale,” he says about the Terry Horan long established shop in Howick that has wall-to-wall man-cave memorabilia he collected piece by piece over the years on display. Some from thoughtful long standing clients who have wished to share a piece of history that would otherwise be collecting dust and some from clients’ overseas adventures and travels. From ancient Roman tumblers to Neolithic arrowheads, a Japanese rifle, 3000-year-old North American Indian cutting stone and copper shells from Solomon Islands, the curios are a talking point for his loyal clients. “This is a great job because you get to talk to

The experienced barber reckons there has been huge upsurge in the profession, so much so his own son has now fully qualified and works with him. “Men are much more conscious about how they present themselves which is good for business,” he smiles. Making the most of the trend, Terry took over Howick Village Barbershop four years ago and gave it a face lift more in line with today’s barbering environment. “Our younger clientele love the atmosphere there just as our regulars do here at Whiskerz. Although excellent fades are on offer at both shops, our barbers have a wide skill range and can cater for everyone in our community. His advice to the locals: “I think it’s important for the survival of the village that we all support the local businesses and in turn they will be around to serve the community now and in the future.”

they should be stopped. It is my belief that as the city’s biggest ward Howick deserves greater recognition with increased and appropriate investment. Transport is a very important issue for Howick and I’m determined to keep driving progress on the quality movement of vehicles and public transport in the Howick ward. The maintenance of our parks and public green spaces should be of high standard, and the issue of safe and clean environment for all is a minimum requirement. I have cared and wish to continue to care for all, young and no-so-young who need support from Council and not just a lip service. What I offer is my full and dedicated commitment. Extensive local and business knowledge to understand the issues, a willingness to listen and a “make it happen” attitude. I do so because I care for the Howick Community, and its future. I will be the only candidate who has resigned from my job to show my commitment to you. Therefore I ask for your vote and support – Phil Taylor. JH14101A

I have lived in and worked in the Howick ward for over 14 years as a journalist/editor of three community newspapers. My local voluntary roles include serving on the board of Uxbridge, MC-ing large community events such as Lions in the Park, Euro Classic Car Show and Howick Santa Parade. Through these I have developed a deep connection and understanding of our community. Auckland is rapidly expanding, an expensive city in need of costly changes and improved infrastructure and I am concerned Phil Taylor about the impact of rising costs on Howick households and businesses. For too long, Howick rates money has left the area to pay for grand, expensive projects in other parts of the city that have little or no benefit for the local community. Wise, fair, well considered and cost effective decisions are crucial. All urban development should be considered, consulted and notified. When high-rise in residential areas and in-fill housing are strongly opposed, such as in and around Stockade Hill and in residential streets,

Painting and ceramic An artist of more than 50 years Keith Morant who has tried hard to stay true to his art will be exhibiting at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery at the Buddhist temple in Flat Bush. The official opening ceremony to the exhibition which is open to all will be on August 4 at 1.30pm at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery. The exhibition consists of painting relating to the natural and “simplest of all archetypal symbols - the rhythm”. Morant says that he is proud to have this work exhibited in the temple gallery as for him the fine Buddhist setting is like coming home to the heart of all that has inspired him and allowed him to endure as an artist. The show will be complimented by ceramic work by Keith’s wife, Tricia.

Fox makes best finish in a major P

ro golfer Ryan Fox claimed his highest placing in a major with his 39th equal finish in the British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland at the weekend. It caps a very good few weeks for the Beachlands player who took home US$41,375 ($60,959) for his 2 over effort for the championship. Winner Francesco Molinari finished on 8 under and won $1.89m ($2.78m). Fox had already earned Euro179,365 ($NZ310,000) to take his total season earnings to $2.26 million up until last weekend’s Scottish Open. He sits ninth on the European money list. Fox finished sixth equal at

the Scottish Open and narrowly missed claiming his first European Tour title in the Irish Open the weekend before. He finished second there. Regarding his British Open finish on Sunday, Fox told the Times: “Yes it’s my highest placing.” “It was a frustrating week. I played better than I scored but overall I’m pretty happy.” Carnoustie brought a lot of misery too for many in the field. “It was just a tough golf course. Conditions were fair but tricky on Friday in the rain and Sunday in the wind.” Fox will have two weeks off before the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri in the US.

Entrust Kicks off 2018 Dividend

The four-month process to organise New Zealand’s largest dividend payout gets underway this month, as Entrust mails payment preference forms to more than 327,000 Auckland homes and businesses. The annual dividend, paid in late September, has a number of payment options and those living in the Entrust district get to choose the one that suits them best, says Entrust chairman, William Cairns. “Now’s the time we ask our dividend beneficiaries to update their payment preferences, choosing from cheque, direct credit to a bank account or a credit to their electricity bill. It’s all about making things easy for later in the year. The dividend is paid in September to homes and businesses in the Entrust district* (encompassing Auckland, Manukau, northern parts of Papakura and eastern Franklin) that are connected to Vector’s electricity network. Last year the dividend was $350 - a significant amount for most households and a boost to Auckland’s economy of more than $110 million. Update forms will be appearing in mailboxes. Erebus National Memorial delayed T

he Ministry for Culture and Heritage has recently told Erebus families that the Erebus National Memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary of the accident on November 28, 2019. The scale and complexity of the Erebus National Memorial means it will be delayed until at least mid2020, according to chief executive Paul James. The accident of Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZK-NZP, Flight TE901, on the slopes of Antarctica’s Mt. Erebus on 28th November 1979 with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is New Zealand’s worst civil disaster, and still the Southern Hemisphere’s

worst aviation accident. The Erebus National Memorial group has been advocating since early 2016 for the long overdue national memorial. Spokesperson Rev Dr Richard Waugh from Howick says, “While we commend the Government’s work for the Erebus National Memorial, it was very disappointing to recently learn that the Ministry for Culture and Heritage have indicated to Erebus families that the memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary in November 2019, but now into 2020, and maybe later.” The Erebus National Memorial group, which includes Erebus fami-

lies and many prominent citizens (such as Lady June Hillary), first proposed the national memorial in early 2016, which would have given ample time for the national memorial project to be completed in time for the 40th anniversary. The delay follows a longstanding reluctance to appropriately remember and honour the victims of the Erebus accident. Ongoing controversy surrounding the cause(s) of the accident should not inhibit in any way the priority of creating an elegant and accessible national memorial for those who died. Rev Waugh adds: “It is vital that a truly bipartisan approach be taken

by all politicians and political parties for the Erebus National Memorial. Such full and positive support will demonstrate genuine care for the Erebus families. This accident is an important part of our national identity and memory and the building of a national memorial must be a continuing priority. While it seems that the Erebus National Memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary, we are proposing that something meaningful and special is still planned for November 28, 2019.”

Ways to assist:

Two specific ways people can support the Erebus National

Memorial Project; 1. Register interest on the website. Relatives of those who died in the Mt. Erebus accident are especially encouraged to identify themselves for the purpose of regular communication updates. See:www.erebusnationalmemorial.nz 2. Write to The Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Minister for Culture and Heritage, Parliament Buildings, Private Bag, Wellington (and copy to Erebus National Memorial, PO Box 82-363, Highland Park, Auckland, 2143), supporting plans for the official Erebus National Memorial.

Are you having tree trouble? $15,000, or $20,000 if both parties agree. But remember that these options can ruin any goodwill that may have existed between you and your neighbour. The court may make the order if: ■■ there is a risk or damage to your property or harm to someone ■■ the tree is unduly interfering with your enjoyment of your property because of falling leaves, fruit, branches etc. or it is blocking the light or your view ■■ the tree is interfering with your drains or gutters The court will not make the order if doing so would cause more hardship to your neighbour than the hardship

you’d have to suffer if the court did not make the order. If the court makes an order that your neighbour must cut back or remove their tree, then generally you are responsible for paying for the work. However the owner of the tree should take reasonable steps to stop the trees interfering with their neighbour’s enjoyment of their own properties, so if the court thinks your neighbour hasn’t fulfilled this responsibility they may require your neighbour to

pay for some or all of the work. Generally www.lgnz. co.nz/nzs-local-government/ new-zealands-councils/ will only get involved with issues involving a tree on private property if it is a protected tree or it is causing problems near a public road or other public property (for example its branches are overhanging the footpath). ■■ Solutions Column complied by Vani is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Pakuranga, Phone 576 8331 and Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271 5382 or phone 0800 267 222 for free and informative help.

Trees have always been a bone of contention among neighbours. Whether your neighbour’s tree is blocking your sun, obstructing your view, its branches are overhanging your property or its roots are growing into your drains, or causing damage to your property, it’s always preferable if you can reach an agreement with your neighbour about the course of action. If you cannot come to an agreement informally, you could try mediation – if both parties are willing to participate. Otherwise you can apply to the www.cab. org.nz/vat/gl/court/Pages/ DisputesTribunal.aspx if the damage is no more than

Feedback

New Zealanders first please Why is it that Phil Twyford’s Kiwi Build homes are firstly for Citizens of NZ and citizens of other countries (permanent residents) in the same bracket. It should be NZ citizens first and after them should come the permanent residents and any others. The Government has a duty of care to its own citizens first and foremost and any others come after that. These permanent residents are citizens of other countries and are not New Zealanders and as such do not owe loyalty to NZ or they would become citizens. Also, why can the Chinese New Settler Support Trust get income-related rent subsidies for 25 years for a $10 million apartment block at Clifton Court, Panmure, as well as $5m to develop it for low income Chinese? Does this apply to NZ citizens? I doubt it as I have neighbours who are having to shift out of Auckland because they can no longer afford to live here due to the high cost of rents. When I asked my local MP what were the advantages of being a citizen over being a resident, the only things he could come up with were New Zealanders get a New Zealand passport and you can’t be deported if you are a criminal. A sorry state of affairs.

No warning signs after sewerage overflow

Reader Barry Wood believes council has failed to warn the public of consequences of sewerage overflow and likely contamination of shellfish at Cockle Bay. Photo supplied

Take care with your dogs

When exercising their animals, I would like to make a plea to dogowners to refrain from using such very long leads. This may make for a more interesting walk for their dog and less reasons for the owner to stop walking - but, other than voice commands, they have no control over the animal. One always greets other walkers in our local community and recently, when a woman approached me with two dogs - one very small, white haired dog; the other a large crossbreed, both on long leads (very long

On Sunday 16th heavy rain once again resulted in many hundreds of thousand of litres of sewerage to pour out onto Cockle Bay Beach over a six hour period. I contacted the Auckland Medical Health Officer, the Auckland City Council, the pollution line, swim safe and an Asian Advisory Group. I was very concerned for the health of the large numbers of new that turn up on every low tide to gather cockles. The health dept and MPI warn not to collect for three days after heavy rain and 30 days for sewerage pollution. Cockles are filter feeders and will store

for the large dog) - I greeted her, looking at the two dogs with “which one is the boss?” At that, the large dog jumped up and bowled me into the road, I think not as an attack, but as a greeting. Being an 86 year-old, I was petrified the fall would cause bone breakage, as happens to so many friends, when tripping up or falling. And, my yell of fright - more than pain - brought help from two people in a nearby house. Surprisingly, the dog owner made no gesture of help or words of concern and, obviously, had absolutely no control over the large animal. One

No-one should have to choose. Imagine being forced to choose between providing food, warmth and shelter for you and your family. Sadly, this is a decision that thousands of Kiwi families living in poverty are forced to make each winter—whether to feed their children at the expense of paying a power bill, or to miss a rent payment—falling further into crippling debt so a family member can visit a doctor. Winter is one of the busiest times of the year for The Salvation Army, with more people seeking support with the basics of survival— food, warmth and shelter—as well as longterm care such as budgeting, counselling and life skills.

The Salvation Army wants every Kiwi to have enough to make it through a tough winter, and the cold winters beyond. Because no-one should have to choose. Please support our Winter Appeal today and help ensure that those in need can get the basics of food, warmth and shelter.

pollution for up to 30 days. To date, no signs have been placed on the beach, nor have I seen any health warning given in the media. The number of people collecting has declined since Sunday so have they been getting sick or heard about the danger by word of mouth or through their media or networks? Our council have failed in their duty to effectively warn the public of this problem and I feel must be accountable and work towards a solution to prevent this happening again.

shudders to think of the disastrous results, had a child been involved. In my accident, no bones were broken but there are on-going problems with my foot. And I know of two people who have experienced similar incidents. With an increasing number of elderly folk still wishing to stay active with their daily walks, more care and consideration should be given by the numerous people now exercising their dogs using very long leads. They obviously have no instant control.

This show is just immoral

Naked Attraction is again on screen on TV. What I can’t understand is why such a disgusting – to put it mildly – shameless, revolting and immoral show is considered worth screening! How does this show help those 18-40-year-olds that it was intended for? A job for the Minister of Social Development, Carmel Sepuloni, I guess, to find how the development of pornography, sexual immorality, rapes, prostitution and paedophilia contributes to the well being of this country. As for the Minister of Broadcasting, Clare Curran, her job would be to assist the Minister of Social Development in gathering this information including how the selection of appropriate programmes are factored into the Broadcasting Standards, which really has no standards at all, judging by the programmes and the shows, except inculcate immorality - and TVNZ’s screening of such shows! Naked Attraction is a British product. Send it back to the UK and let them wallow in their immorality. We don’t need it here! You can bet your bottom dollar that I won’t be turning my TV on for any of TVNZ’s programmes nor would I be buying from any of those businesses that advertise on that show. And I won’t be the only one as many of those I know have expressed the same sentiment.

Don’t miss out! Especially for those living in the east, EastLife is published on the first week of each month.

THIS MONTH EastLife takes readers on holiday (metaphorically speaking) to Vanuatu – a lovely escape from winter’s bite – and we also talk to an absolute ‘angel’, Kate Hargraves, a St John volunteer who puts her warmth and caring to good use as a ‘friend of the emergency department’ at Auckland Hospital. On the other hand, readers should check out a rugby star whose ‘love’ for the game has seen her become a regular fixture in a Black Fern jersey. Most of the Fencibles had joined the British Army from an over-populated Ireland looking for food, shelter and warm clothing. Fencibles received a pension generally from six pence a day to one shilling and sixpence a day depending on their war service. Most had a wife and growing children and their wages plus the pension was subsistence living in poverty. Fencibles did not trust banks so they stuffed the cash under the mattress or in a tin can on a shelf. Most grew a few vegetables. In the cottage gardens, cabbages and potatoes were the main crop. Fruit trees – especially peaches, pears, apples and figs – were planted. A few of these trees have survived. Barter was common in the Fencible period. If you bought a kete [flax kit] of, say, six snapper for sixpence from a Maori hawking his catch, he would expect a few figs of tobacco for his shortstemmed clay pipe. Maori wanted tea, flour, tobacco or

ANNIVERSARY items of clothing. Shop-keepers advertised items for barter with Maori who were astute negotiators. Sugar was expensive so seldom used. With pork at only four pence a pound, tobacco and clay pipes were useful bartering items. In 1891, to support social welfare programmes, Income Tax and Land Tax were introduced. Bartering almost stopped at this time. In the “Fencible Gazette”, the Fencibles newspaper advertised “for an enormous quantity of seed potatoes to plant” in July 1848 which is a measure of the great demand for potatoes. You could harvest two crops of potatoes a year in Howick’s clay soils. After a few years most Fencibles had bought a cow to graze on their acre allotments. Cows, which cost about five pounds, produced butter to sell or barter at the general store

and, after making butter, they could eat their potatoes with buttermilk, a favourite Irish meal. Maize-meal was available at three shillings for 25 pounds in 1850. The Rev. Lush’s family in Howick liked maize-meal porridge for breakfast instead of oatmeal porridge or fried or boiled potatoes. Catholic Father Garin also had a cow and poultry. Some Fencibles had ducks but more had a few goats that provided meat as well as milk. Goats were much cheaper than cows and would eat

almost anything. If your family was hungry in 1850, many went to the beaches to gather cockles, mussels or oysters which were freely available. If children were hungry they could snack on cape gooseberries which were early weeds. This fresh diet meant that early settlers generally lived much longer than their contemporaries in Britain. We continue today with western food usage based closely on our early settler diets. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

Winter chill hits sales volumes, but not prices T

he winter chill has impacted real estate sales volumes across the country in June but has done little to halt price rises in most regions, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). In June the median price across the country rose by 5.7 per cent to a record equal median of $560,000 up from $530,000 the same time last year. Additionally, the New Zealand excluding Auckland median price remained at a record equalling figure of $460,000 in June up 7 per cent on June 2017. However, Auckland’s median price decreased by 0.7 per cent year-on-year to $850,000 down from $856,000 last year. New Zealand’s most expensive three territorial authorities are Auckland City with a median of $1,010,000, North Shore City with a median of $975,000 and Queenstown Lake District with a median of $908,000. Three regions saw record median prices during June – Waikato (+11.7 per cent to $525,000), Wellington (+12.3 per cent to $595,000) and Marlborough (+11.4 per cent to $440,000). Additionally, regions with strong annual

The number of properties sold across the country fell by 1.6 per cent to 6034, down from 6,131 in June 2017. Stock photo

increases included Gisborne (+26.9 per cent to $330,000) and Hawke’s Bay (+15.3 per cent to $430,000). However, the number of properties sold across the country decreased by 1.6 per cent to 6034, down from 6131 in June 2017. This was the result of significant decreases in sales volumes in 8 out of 16 regions and a 9.9 per cent decrease in new property listings year-on-year. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “While Jack Frost may have got his icy grip on sales volumes, he has not been able to extend this to prices as New Zealand’s median price increased by 5.7 per cent year-on-year.“ The lack of housing supply continues to put pressure on prices in the majority of regions across New Zealand, with 12 out of 16 regions see-

ing a price increase since June last year. “Until we solve the supply issue, house prices are likely to continue rising, particularly as the OCR remains low and the banks continue dropping interest rates,” she says. “Again, we’re seeing this two-tier market across the country where prices are remaining stable in Auckland and Canterbury but rising in most other parts of the country.” “From a volume perspective, we’ve seen the usual winter slowdown impact the market. Sales volumes fell significantly year-on-year on the West Coast (-25.7 per cent) which was the lowest sales count for 14 months, Waikato (-14.0 per cent) also the lowest sales count for 14 months, Wellington (-10.6 per cent) the lowest number of properties sold for 5 months and Otago (-8.3 per cent) the lowest sales count for 11 months. “Despite this, there were some regions that saw a strong increase in sales including Hawke’s Bay (+23.0 per cent), Tasman (+22.8 per cent) and Manawatu/Wanganui (+14.1 per cent),” continues Norwell.

Days to sell

The median number of days

to sell a property nationally increased by 2 days from 36 days in June 2017 to 38 days in June 2018. For New Zealand excluding Auckland, the median days to sell increased by 1 day from 36 to 37. Auckland saw the median number of days to sell a property increase by 2 days to 40 days (up from 38 in June 2017), but it remained the same as last month.

Auctions

Auctions were used in 11.3 per cent of all sales across the country in June, with 684 properties selling under the hammer – this is down slightly from June 2017, when 14.2 per cent of properties (870) were sold via auction. For the fifth month in a row, Gisborne had the highest percentage of auctions across the country with 27 per cent (or 15 properties) in the region sold under the hammer – down from 32 per cent (19 properties) in June 2017. Auckland saw the second largest percentage of auctions on 21 per cent (386 properties) down from 24 per cent in June 2017 (446 properties) and the Bay of Plenty on 12 per cent (54 properties) down from 25 per cent (100 properties) in June 2017.

Pak College wins Open U18s

Quax takes U20 title ➤ From Page 24 “I thought I’d start running on the grass and see how I went. Now I have two children I spend a lot of the time on the treadmill, I’ve got to do that while they are playing or bouncing on the jumper.“ I’ve been doing the Run Auckland series, which gets me on the road and toughens me up a bit for the cross country. I’ll give it a go for the national title, surprisingly I’ve pulled out really good after having two kids, almost even better so we’ll just see how we go,” she said. Theo Quax, on the eve of taking up an American scholarship, led throughout the under 20 8km winning in 29:20. Lachlan Haitana was second in 30:23. “I went out there and gave it my best. I wanted to take the W here before I left,” said Quax. “I leave in three weeks for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Matt Baxter and Georgie Beamish are already there and I’m going over with Mitchell Small so there’s a good Kiwi contingent there. “My first race over there will be in Tucson on 15 September over 10k.” Tanja Miller of Hamilton was a clear winner of the masters 6km in 27:03 while Nick Pannett led in the master men in 30:01 for the 8km. Alyssa Bullot won the under 20 women’s in 27:03.

Pakuranga College 1st XV rugby team triumph on Gold Coast

P

akuranga College 1st XV continued a tradition of high achievement with strong performances throughout its tour of the Gold Coast Rugby Tournament this month. The team came away with five wins of its six games — winning the Open U18 grade for the second time in three years. “Our only loss was to a New South Wales representative team, who I truly believe would compete and beat most 1A schools (top Auckland school sides). “So the boys did well to front up and play as well as they did.” said Darren Jardine, head of faculty, Health and PE at Pakuranga College. “The team had a great tour both on and off the field, and demonstrated the unique bond that you get when you head away with a team, which was great to see,” Mr Jardine says. The team was also privileged to be asked to open the ceremony for the final night dinner in the main arena at the outback

Young Aussies take Trans-Tasman Shield

Wheeler takes Auckland title

O

Peter Wheeler followed up his North Island victory in Taupo two weeks ago with another convincing win taking out his first Auckland senior cross country title in 34:18 for the 10km in the Athletics Auckland Cross Country Championships at Barry Curtis Park on Saturday. The defending champion Jono Jackson was second in 35:22 with last year’s under 20 champion Andrew Catley third in 36:05. Wheeler was pleased with the win. “That’s my first senior cross country title. I just went out and tried to keep a solid pace the whole way, and managed to pull off the win, so pretty happy with that. It’s a good sign going into the nationals in two weeks,” he said. Lisa Cross (nee Robertson) won the senior women’s 10km in emphatic fashion covering the five laps in 38:42, over three minutes ahead of Olivia Burne. Fiona Love was third in 43:37. Cross, the national 10km road champion in 2011 and the national half marathon champion in 2012, said with the nationals coming up she would try herself over the country. ➤ Turn to Page 23

n Friday July 13 the Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) hosted a battle from across the ditch with the Pakuranga Under 10s playing a team from the Cherrybrook Club in Sydney, Australia, now renamed the Northern Barbarians. Pakuranga’s Under 11 team played against East Coast Bays as the Northern Barbarians only had one side this year. The relationship between the Pakuranga and Cherrybrook club has continued successfully for more than 30 years and sees boys and girls of these age groups travel bi-annually to Sydney for a series of matches. The Pakuranga Under 10 team coached by Shaiden Lambert plus assistant coaches Nick Williams and Stephen Weston and managed by Ana Kireka - played for the Trans-Tasman Shield. It was a hard-fought game with plenty of courage and determination shown by both teams with the Australians emerging victors with a final score of 24-5. The PURC forward of the day was awarded to Nataylah Lefau and back of the day, Spencer

Malaki-Martin. The Under 11 team (since being selected in 2016) has worked tirelessly under head coach Glenn Beattie with assistant coaches Joe Bolton and Karna Luke were managed by Elaine Bridge. The team was unbeaten having won three games in Sydney last year racking up 201 points

against three different opposition teams whilst conceding only 5 points. This year the success of the team has continued with their final outing on Friday against East Coast Bays. A strong forward pack took opportunities, breaking the advantage line leaving the ball to move effortlessly through

the back line. Tries were scored across the field with four by PURC forward of the day Jacob Ely and one to back of the day Lachlan Finefeuiaki. As well as broadening their rugby playing skills, this Cherrybrook Tour provides players the opportunity to develop new life skills and experiences which forge life-long bonds. These players will help provide the future for Pakuranga United as this tour is the entry level to representative rugby for the players. Training for the 2019 Under 10 team for players born in 2009 will start on July 22 with the trial to be held on August 19. Everyone eligible is welcome to come along and join in.
