The opening night of Elton John’s biopic ‘Rocketman’ was a sell out at Monterey cinema in Howick – and all for a very good cause. Campaigners fighting to save Stockade Hill views held a fundraiser to help them pay their legal bills and continue their battle with Auckland Council. “It was an amazing turn out – we sold out not one but two theatres!” said Brooke Williams of the action group, the Defencibles. The enthusiastic crowd came dressed for the show with sequins, feathers and typically Elton John glasses. “Such a fun night and great to have so many supporters. We are definitely growing in numbers – if the Council thinks this issue is just going to fizzle out they might need to think again,” said Williams. Stockade Hill Views are under threat from building height regulation changes following the introduction of the Unitary Plan. Williams said the next step in the process is for Howick Local Board to commission an Independent Planning Review into this issue to decide whether a further plan change could resolve this issue that has caused significant public outrage. Campaigners are eager to get the review started and have complained about the painfully slow progress. “We just don’t understand what the blockage is – who or what is holding this up?”
Pioneering athlete is made a Dame S
porting great, the late Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to athletics. The honour was approved by Her Majesty and took effect on April 12 this year. Dame Yvette had agreed to accept the honour before she died on April 13. Dame Yvette’s brother Roy Williams told the Times from Te Aroha that the wonderful honour was tinged with sadness. “It’s very, very sad that she didn’t
get the honour bestowed upon her (at an investiture ceremony),” he said. “It would have been lovely if she were still alive and able to see the public acknowledgement and receive the award from the Governor-General. (However) we’re thrilled by it and very, very honoured on Yvette’s behalf.” The family – including her children Neville, Peter, Karen and possibly Bruce (who is in Wales) – would attend the investiture ceremony in Auckland in August.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, “It is with sadness that we recognise Yvette Corlett as a Dame Companion for her pioneering contribution to athletics. “As the first New Zealand women to win an Olympic gold medal she was a trailblazer. In addition to her ground-breaking athletics success she undertook lifelong service to sport as a volunteer and administrator. “I think many Kiwis will agree that Yvette’s recognition at this level was long overdue – but I’m pleased that she knew she was to become a

Dame before she passed away." Dame Yvette was the first New Zealand female athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. It was in 1952 in the long jump event. She served as Patron of Counties Manukau Regional Sports Trust for 17 years until 2009. She was Patron of Athletics NZ from 2003 to 2006 and served on the NZ Sports Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors from 1990 to 1995. She served for 40 consecutive years on the selection panel for the NZ Herald Junior Sports Awards. ➤ Turn to Page 3

Budget ‘not for us’

T
he Labour/NZ First/Green Government’s so-called “Wellbeing” Budget is anything but and is simply another example of a government with no plan to improve the lives of everyday New Zealanders, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. “This is not a wellbeing budget. The hardworking people of Pakuranga will be left asking what’s in it for them. Local families want more money in their weekly budgets for food, petrol, and rent, but instead, their taxes are going towards rail, the defence force and trees,” said Brown. NZ First had once again shown that it holds the purse strings with last Thursday’s announcement of a billion dollars on rail, he said. “The cost of this coalition is not worth it for New Zealanders with what they’re getting in return, and it certainly isn’t improving anyone’s wellbeing.” “It’s no wonder the Government has had to drop its selfimposed debt target and increase the spending limit by $17 billion so they can fund the Government’s bad spending decisions.” This is likely to lead to higher taxes in future to pay off the extra debt when middle-class New Zealand is already struggling to get by, he said. “Yet with all this extra spending there’s still no funding for health, with no money for midwives or free GP visits and less of an increase for elective surgeries than last year,” says Brown.

“Yesterday (Wednesday, May 29) teachers marched on Parliament demanding a pay rise but there’s nothing for them today. The Budget has funding for classrooms, but what good are classrooms if there are no teachers to work in them? The economy is slowing down, he said, and the Government is doing nothing to encourage growth. “Business confidence is at record lows because of its poor policy decisions and this Budget shows they still have no plan to grow the economy,” said Brown. “Their poor economic management means there are fewer jobs, more people on a benefit and needing hardship assistance, huge increases in the numbers of people without housing and more people missing out on elective surgeries. “This simply isn’t good enough for a government that inherited one of the strongest economies in the world, built on the back of hardworking New Zealand-
ers like those in Pakuranga. They deserve to reap the rewards of that effort, but this Budget means they’ll be forced to wait.” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says some aspects of Budget 2019 deserve praise while others could have been much better. “The red team will say everything is great, while the blue team will say everything is bad,” he says. “For Kiwis who just want to know if the Budget will improve their lives and make New Zealand a better place to live, the truth is somewhere in the middle.” Ross said he’s pleased to see more investment being made in social services, mental health, building schools and classrooms, removing the cost of “voluntary” donations at low decile state and state-integrated schools, and addressing family and sexual violence. But he says he’s disappointed there’s no money in the Budget to increase teachers’ salaries, address housing unaffordability, lower the cost of dental treatments and fully fund the emergency ambulance services. “I also hoped to see more money going to Pharmac to fund lifesaving cancer drugs, and to Police to get more officers on the streets, including in our local east Auckland community. “Overall the Budget does address some major challenges facing New Zealand, but other longstanding issues are yet to be resolved.”
Go without for a good cause It’s New Zealand’s largest youth fundraising event and this year World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine will see close to 30,000 Auckland students from around 93 schools take on the challenge. They will give up food, warm blankets, speaking or technology for 40 hours from Friday June 7 to Sunday June 9 And it’s all to provide life-saving aid for South Sudanese refugees in Uganda. Howick College, Howick Intermediate, Botany Downs School, Botany Downs Secondary College and Pakuranga College are among the school’s who will have students taking part. Along with a further 60,000 youth across the country, they will help raise vital funds for the more than 800,000 South Sudanese who have fled conflict with hope of finding refuge in Uganda. This year, much-loved Kiwi actor Julian Dennison is championing the 40 Hour Famine in his new role as Famine Ambassador. Julian has recently returned from a trip to Uganda with World Vision where he met with young refugees, many of whom were of a similar age, and found out what kind of impact fleeing war-torn South Sudan has had on them; and exactly how Kiwi kids can help. “So many of the South Sudanese refugees I met fled their homes without their parents – and some with no family at all. They all have so much responsibility, at such a young age, and are having to adjust to a new reality – yet despite the hardships they have and are facing I was met with big smiles and so much hope for their futures.” Money raised in the 2019 40 Hour Famine will help provide essentials for South Sudanese refugees in Uganda from the moment they cross the border, including nutritious food, clean water, foster care, household items, peace clubs for young people and more. ■■ If you haven’t yet signed up to do so now at famine.org.nz

Anne Howell QSM
Meanwhile Anne Howell of Pakuranga has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community and education. Mrs Howell has been involved in the education community in the Anchorage Park School area in Pakuranga since 1981. She was a member of the Anchorage Park Kindergarten Committee and foundation member and Secretary of the Anchorage Park School Board of Trustees. She has served on the Board since 1989, and as Board Chairperson since 2006. Her support and advocacy was instrumental in the retention of the Anchorage Park Community Centre on the grounds of the School. Her key responsibilities on the board have included management of the school’s property projects and school security. She is the first point of contact for the security monitoring service, for community users of the school pool in the weekends and over the summer holiday break and for users of the school hall after hours. She also served on the Pakuranga Intermediate School Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1998 and on the Edgewater College Board from 1998 to 2004. Mrs Howell has been the chairperson of the Farm Cove Scout Group since 2016. She told the Times: “I am very honoured and proud to receive this Queen’s Service Medal award. The years that I have spent being involved in this community and supporting the local schools as a Board of Trustees member have been a privilege and a rewarding experience. These years would not have been possible without the support of my husband Sel, my children, Deborah Mathew and Suzanne, and grandsons, Blake and Jordan. Actively contributing to and supporting the community is something that we as a family value and hold very dear.”
Lois Perry QSM
Another Queen’s Service Medal recipient Lois Perry, of Mt Eden but formerly the Head of the Visual Arts Department at Pakuranga College, has actively promoted education and engagement of local communities with art in Pakuranga and the wider Auckland region for more than 40 years. Ms Perry began her career as an art teacher at Pakuranga College where she was the Head of the Art Department for 11 years and her civic roles since have focused on art education. In 1975, she assisted the Pakuranga Arts Society with the establishment of the Pakuranga Arts Centre, NZ’s first purpose-built contemporary arts centre. She volunteered as the Society’s Founding President from 1981 to 1985, as a committee member from 1985 to 2002, and then in leadership and governance roles until 2017. Since its establishment in 2000, she has played a pivotal role in the development of Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, a contemporary arts space in Pakuranga with an education facility and dedicated exhibition space. She was chair of the centre from 2002 to 2007, and remained as a Trustee of Te Tuhi’s governing Trusts, the Contemporary Art Foundation and the Te Tuhi Contemporary Art Trust. In 2004 Ms Perry established the Art Today programme at Te Tuhi, which continues to teach contemporary art to adult students to the present day.
Major surgery is no match for 104-year-old By Therese Henkin
W
hile the thought of major surgery would be daunting for many, the operating table was no big deal for 104-year-old Len Darr. Just three week’s post surgery and the centenarian is back to his old tricks. Walking up and down stairs without puffing, looking after himself, driving his car and chasing his cat off a pile of important documents are among the things the Howick local hasn’t let the surgery stop him from doing. While Darr has become well-known for his fitness and impeccable health, for more than 20 years he’s been living with what’s called a Zenker’s diverticulum. It’s a pouch that forms at the junction of the lower part of the throat and the oesophagus, Darr says, which made it difficult for him to swallow and constantly regurgitate undigested food. But until now, his doctors have deemed the surgery to repair it too dangerous. “There is only one surgeon in the country that is qualified to do the surgery, and they hadn’t a lot of information about what the outcome would be. And given my age they said it was

too risky. “I’ve always told them to just go for it, I knew I’d be fine,” he says with a big ‘I told them so’ grin on his face. When his doctors finally gave the go-ahead for the surgery, Darr jumped at the chance, despite his surgeon’s warning that there was no guarantee he would make it out alive. “I wanted them to do the surgery not only for myself, but so that the surgeon could learn
more about the surgery and use that to help other people, so they don’t have to live with it like I did,” he says. Darr, who is deeply spiritual, says he trusted the Holy Spirit to protect him and guide him through. When he woke up from the anaesthetic; the doctors were shocked at how well he bounced back. And even after taking a tumble at the hospital post-surgery
and suffering severe bruising, he was home within a few days and looking after himself. “Well first they sent me to an old age home to recover for three days. That definitely wasn’t where I wanted to be. I’m too young for that,” he says. But you’d never guess Darr’s age, let alone that he’d undergone major surgery. His mind is sharp and he moves around with ease. He says in the last year his body has slowed down, but he still feels “fit as a fiddle”. “I think my purpose is to be of service to others, and keeping fit and healthy allows me to keep serving the community.” And serve the community he has. Len has volunteered for St John’s Ambulance services since he was a teenager and served in the Royal Air Force medical corps in Egypt during World War II. He went on to run Darr’s Health Clinic in Takapuna until he retired at age 70. Sports have always been a huge part of his life, and just two years ago he made headlines after signing up to a gym membership at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre. “My mind is sharp and active and I’ve never let my physical age slow me down. I don’t plan on starting now.”

Life goes full circle for Bruce and Annette
Bruce and Annette Mattison return to the land they once owned. The move into Ryman Healthcare’s Bruce McLaren Retirement Village has been more tting for Bruce and Annette Mattison than most. While both were prominent members of the Howick business community and so familiar to many in the village, the fact that the Chapel Road site had actually been their home once before conrmed it was the right move. “We’ve come full circle!” Annette says. In the late 70s the couple opened a Pitch’n’Putt golf course on the site, a new concept in New Zealand at the time. They built a home there, replanted and redeveloped the land into a ninehole golf course and maintained and managed the seven-day-a-week business with the help of their two sons Stephen and Andrew, who became junior greenkeepers. One of the highlights was when record-breaking aviatrix Jean Batten came to visit in 1977. Bruce found himself talking to her at a meeting at MOTAT where she was the guest speaker. “I said if she wasn’t doing anything on Sunday to come for a run out in the
country and then I promptly forgot all about it. “So you can imagine our delight when she turned up and she spent a good hour with us sitting on the deck overlooking the golf course enjoying a cup of tea.” Adds Annette: “She was so easy to talk to and quite a character. We’ll always treasure that special memory.” The golf course proved to be extremely hard work with no days off. Bruce was still running his company Tessco, a traffic signal company, while Annette juggled the day to day management of the course with the boys’ afterschool activities. They eventually decided to sell it as a going concern and instead they opened a women’s clothing shop called Carnegie’s, rst in Moore Street and later relocating to Picton Street, Howick’s main thoroughfare. “I did the buying and looking after the customers and making sure they looked good while Bruce ran the business side of it from upstairs,” says Annette. She introduced the mother of the bride concept where ladies could come in and buy their hat, shoes and outt in a package deal and, being a believer in good promotion, she secured
a weekly slot on a national radio programme which gave them customers New Zealand-wide. “I had a phone-in every Thursday morning on Alice Worsley’s radio show where I talked about fashion. “One of my customers was the former mayor of Auckland, Cath Tizard. She bought a lot of clothes because I’d worked out all her colouring. “She said ‘I have heard your voice so many times I feel like I know you!’” Annette laughs. Annette worked hard to source the best clothes and says some of her fellow residents at Bruce McLaren still own outts bought from her shop. Proof, she says, of their enduring style. The couple say they have taken plenty of risks in life but have been fortunate enough that most of them have worked out well. Their decision to move into the village happened quite quickly after a couple turned up one day and offered to buy their house on Sandspit Road, even including the furniture! “We knew Ryman had started up on our old golf course so we thought we’d go and check it out,” says Bruce. Eighteen months later they moved in
and it took another few months to adapt to the new lifestyle, says Annette. Now they wouldn’t consider anything else. What sealed the deal for Annette was the maintenance-free life she could now enjoy. “We came back from our three months in Australia and they had cleaned all my windows – what more could I want?! “Plus, the management are wonderful and there’s a bell to ring if I’m sick!” Bruce agrees: “The staff are just amazing, every single one of them, and that’s unusual in any big organisation.” They are both avid bowls players and have competed in Ryman tournaments and they love relaxing with friends, both new and old, over drinks at Happy Hour each week. “It’s been good getting in touch with our old customers and associates again after being part of Howick for so long,” says Annette. “We’re very lucky, we have got very good friends and have made new friends at the village as well.” Bruce adds: “A lot of people ask us about the village and we tell them it’s great. We couldn’t speak more highly of it!”

ix local schools, 10 teams and 38 students from different schools were all on a mission to banish an invasive species of moth pods and vines that have tenaciously spread their tentacles all over Auckland. The students went about it with militant precision, and their efforts were well rewarded at an award function held recently by Auckland Council at Howick College. A handsome prize of $2000 for moth pod heads got local students to collect 9989 pods and small vines with around 700 seeds per pod. It means that 6,992,300 seeds will not germinate, said Lorelle Stranaghan, coordinator PestFree Howick, who is thrilled with the response. In an attempt to create a pestfree Howick Ward, along with
collecting the pods and small vines by the roots, the students also cut the vines and applied a herbicide paste called Picloram Gel which kills the vine (they get a kit as part of the competition containing a bottle of Picloram Gel, a supply of disposable gloves, protective eyewear, full instructions on use). Richard Henty, head of learning science at Howick College who informally started Society Totally Against Moth Plant (STAMP) in 2004 encouraged students to begin formally mapping and tracking moth pod plants and the locations they have visited. “Report all known addresses or GPS (coordinates) of where you went. From October 1 you must challenge yourself to visit and report on 20 known locations near you,” he told the enviro groups. Team Demon compris-

ing Alexey Filyaev and Tanish Mahakal, both 13, from Botany Downs Secondary College proved to be zealous pod hunters as they demolished 2265 pods over a period of one month and went home happy with $500. The second prize of $400 was also scored by the Cultured Moth Destroyers from Botany College as the team managed to vanquish 1878 pods in total. Team Moth-erland Protectors from Macleans College took the third prize of $300 for getting rid of 1588 pods. The Edgewater College Enviro Club won $200 for fourth with a prized collection of 1349 moth pods and vines to their credit. The Howick College Enviro Group were fourth and went home with $150 for 1028 pods, while team Sancta Maria College won $100 for getting rid of 882 pods.
We’d like to tell you more about them.

Everything under the hammer at The Five Stags The new team at The Five Stags have big plans for the Whitford local, including a new name and full makeover. The doors will be closing for four weeks on June 29 for the refit but there’s a lot of stuff to find a home for before then. They say it’s time to call in the auctioneers. New owner Patrick Shields is looking forward to the event. “Many of our regulars have a soft spot for our hunting memorabilia and were keen to know what was going to happen to it when we rebranded. “An auction gives everyone the opportunity to take something home but it’s also a fun way for us to kick off the exciting changes that will be taking place over the next few months and we get to raise a few dollars for charity at the same time. It’ll be a great night.” The auction on Saturday, June 15 will be hosted by experienced auctioneer Phillip Bensemann and the first lot goes under the hammer at 7.30pm. Those wishing to browse the items can either pop into The Five Stags over the next week and pick up a leaflet or visit www. allaboutauctions.co.nz. Some items will have reserve

prices and those wishing to make a bid will have to be there in person – no pre-auction bids will be accepted. Donations from the auction will be given to both St John’s Ambulance and The Stroke Foundation. Due to anticipated numbers attending the event there will be a limited food service during the evening. The Five Stags closes on June 29 and will reopen as The Stables Whitford on August 1.
A budget on botched catch phrases T
here’s a lot of partisan commentary on Budget 2019 out there already. The red team says everything is great. The blue team says everything is bad. It’s a “Wellbeing Budget” or “Botched Budget”, depending on who you cheerlead for. I no longer sit in Parliament with the same permanently tinted glasses on. The reality is budgets in NZ have been fairly middle of the road for my whole adult life. Cullen, English, Joyce and Robertson all produced fairly similar outcomes. We fight elections and policies at the margins these days, and there’s a general consensus on approaches to fiscal policy. The Government did well to put $1.9 billion into mental health. Unemployment also remains low with economic growth moderate. Labour is continuing the social investment work of the previous
National Government and debt levels will land roughly where English/Joyce projected. There wasn’t much that should get either side too excited or disappointed. That’s probably the biggest let down for the government’s supporters – there’s little to be inspired by. Fuel tax increases and lack of sufficient funding for teachers, ambulance and dental services stand out as missed opportunities. The business community still sees uncertainty and transport programmes move forward at their typical slow pace. The biggest failure of the Budget has to be the lack of vision for solving the housing crisis. Kiwibuild is proving a failure yet remains on life support. There is little else on the horizon. Considerably increasing land supply and genuine RMA reform are needed, but tends to be too

MP for Botany hard for us politicians to deliver. First home buyers don’t see anyone offering the answers they deserve. On education, it’s a positive move for the Government to put more than a billion dollars toward building new schools and classrooms. But the glaring omission was teachers’ salaries, something these hard working professionals are yet to see certainty on. Budget 2019 was incremental in its change. Some things good, some less so. It gets the job done without excitement or offensiveness. Next time you see a political party using a catch phrase to describe a policy or their opponents, don’t pay too much attention. It’s probably not good for your own wellbeing.

The Friends of Mangemangeroa are holding its annual community tree planting mornings this month. Each year the local community are invited to join in these popular Saturday morning native bush events. The first will be held on Saturday June 8, led by Forest & Bird. The second will be on Saturday June 15, led by the Rotary Club, on Saturday 15th Rain or shine, the events will go ahead so bring along your friends and children (preferably 12 years or older) to help out. The morning involves work in pairs digging shallow holes, planting a tree, and moving along the sites in a safe and systematic manner. Some helpers will put reusable corflute tree protectors around each plant. Most trees are going into unmown pasture below the Trig, close to the Mangemangeroa car park and Barn. All trees are grown from seeds eco-sourced from the Mangemangeroa Valley. A typical morning will see between 1200 – 1500 trees planted. Throughout the year these have been grown at many planting units around the

William fell in love with Theo, who is now 3.5 years old, and they decided to keep him. “I learnt that I can go up to Theo’s paddock and give him cuddles and it makes me feel way better,” William wrote in his Youth Category entry. “When I am struggling at school I think about Theo and then somehow I calm down and

The Nukes pioneer ukulele affection By PJ Taylor
O
f all musical instruments, the ukulele is the one that makes everyone happy. Even grumps crack a smile. The high and bright string sound hits the chords of joy - and the craze has strummed across New Zealand for the most part of this new millennium. It seems like every town and suburb has a ukulele band or performers – Howick has its beloved Ukes of Howick – and The Nukes are the forebears, frontier pioneers of ukulele music in this land. They look like they’re cousins of The Band, the former Bob Dylan ensemble known as the Hawks through the early 1960s, who, until disbanding in 1976, dressed like they were from the old days – anytime from the 1880s to 1930. The Band cornered the Americana alt-country wardrobe style and many bands have stylised themselves in that pioneering spirit. The Nukes are all class in that department. The Nukes return to Howick this Saturday, June 8, to play – appropriately attired – in the historic and acoustically eloquent Uxbridge Theatre. Dave Parker leads the trio that stands side-by-side treading the boards, a knowing, engaging

voice and compelling custom uke sound that earns respect. He explains that The Nukes have had a line-up change over the past year and they’re just really hitting their straps. “Swabbing the decks is our new recruit, ‘The Curious’ percussionist, ‘Mysterious’ Mike Burrows, who also packs a spry falsetto vocal. “And our audacious slide ukulele and wry humour of Ben Collier keeps the whole shebang on an even keel. It’s original, quirky and Kiwi,” Parker says. Favourites of music festival directors, The Nukes have played the four corners of Australasia’s finest and all points in-between, from WOMAD, Splore and Auckland and Canterbury’s Folk Festivals, to New Plymouth’s Fes-
tival of Light, Wanaka Festival of Colour and the Bluff Oyster Festival. They’ve been on the road for a decade producing the good noise, three great albums, and their online streams and views are more than 100,000. “If you see that The Nukes are coming your way, don’t duck and cover, don’t try and be a hero,” Parker says, in keeping with the band’s wit. “Just gather all your friends and head for ground zero.” Described as ‘part Vaudeville, part Rat Pack, part musical car crash’, The Nukes are in concert at Uxbridge Arts and Culture centre’s Uxbridge Theatre on Saturday, June 8, Howick, from 8pm. For tickets, see www. uxbridge.org.nz.
Have your say on bylaw To help Auckland achieve a zerowaste future, Auckland Council has rules that support Aucklanders to manage and minimise their waste. The Solid Waste Bylaw 2012 contains some of those rules, some of which are due to expire later this year. Chair of the council’s Regulatory Committee, Linda Cooper, says a review of those rules looked at what was working and what could be improved. This has resulted in a proposal for a new waste bylaw – the Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2019 – and amendments to the Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw 2015. “We’re looking to establish a new waste bylaw to better outline what Aucklanders need to do to manage and minimise waste in a way that protects the public from health and safety risks and nuisance, and to manage the use of public places.” “Last year we introduced our Waste Management and Minimisation Plant to help Auckland achieve a zerowaste future, and the new bylaw will make the rules to support this vision.” “Today we’ve opened public consultation on the proposed changes to how we regulate waste management and minimisation, so we encourage all Aucklanders to have their say by June 16.”
Council proposes that the new bylaw: Requires people to deposit and dispose of waste appropriately (for example, in a kerbside recycling bin, in a public waste bin or to a waste management facility). Existing controls about the separation, placement and collection of waste will continue to apply Requires approval from the council
to operate for waste collectors and operators of waste management and resource recovery facilities and donation collection bins Aligns the definition of cleanfill with the Unitary Plan Clarifies waste management and minimisation plan requirements for trading, events and filming in council-controlled public places, and existing and planned multi-unit developments Clarifies the rules to minimise the potential for shopping trolleys, unaddressed mail and donated items to become waste. It also highlights that election material and public notices remain deliverable to all letterboxes despite any non-delivery signs.

The Howick Local Board has agreed with a Panuku recommendation that a small parcel of land (pictured in red) at 303 Te Irirangi Drive will be part of a land swap with the owner of the neighbouring property. Images supplied
was taken from the owner of the adjoining 128 Ormiston Road in Flat Bush in accordance with the Public Works Act for roading purposes. The owner indicated an interest in acquiring a small parcel of 303 Te Irirangi Drive to square up their property boundaries. The decision is now passed on the Finance and performance Committee Approval.
JH15016
Howick Local Board has endorsed Panuku Development Auckland’s recommendation to quit a small parcel of land at 303 Te Irirangi Drive. This means they have agreed to give up a small section of a 10,083 square metre site at Clover Park. About 9400 square metres of the site is required for transport infrastructure use. The remainder – about 680 square metres – will be part of a land swap with the owner of neighbouring land. A vacant site acquired by Manukau City Council in 2002, 303 Te Irirangi Drive has been held for flood remediation and future transport purposes. In 2013, the land

Don’t miss out! Especially for those living in the east, EastLife is published on the first week of each month. Cooler days are on their way but readers are sure to warm to this month’s EastLife. With Queen’s Birthday Weekend a fresh reminder of our Commonwealth connections, it is appropriate our focus on an inspirational cake decorator should have regal overtones. We also talk to Jenny Suo who made the news as a Pakuranga College student and is still making, or rather, presenting news today. Check out a raft of recipes, fabulous fashions and enjoy Jes Magill’s rail and road journey. Copies are available from locations across the district – visit eastlife.co.nz for pickup sites. An e-edition is also available.
Simeon Brown’s exposé on the Coalition’s debt situation is at odds with current economic thinking. Firstly, one of the world’s biggest credit rating institutions rates New Zealand’s Government debt as low relative to other OECD countries and by increasing it by a few percentage points would be unlikely to have an effect on New Zealand’s overall credit rating. And as long as money is spent on worthwhile public assets (which the coalition is doing), it is warranted. Secondly, a Government’s low debt does not prove that the level of government spending is appropriate, As for broken promises from the National Party, how about these just for a few: ■■ no more asset sales (that’s a laugh). 10 per cent of NZ’s habitable and productive land now in foreign hands; ■■ 8000 state houses to be built and only managed 81 and at a time when Auckland alone required 14.000 houses per annum. National in their nine years of governorship oversaw a totally insufficient 7000 ■■ the cycleway that was supposed to create 4000 jobs and only managed 511 ■■ promised tax cuts and immediately raising GST to 15 per cent ■■ lowering the wage gap with Australia (another laugh) ■■ Kiwi savers having their

entitlement halved in the second year ■■ ECE promised retaining all existing subsidies and then had 90/100 per cent of the budget cut for registered teachers ■■ and the granddaddy of them all, the 2011 Budget stated the balance package would cost $415 million in the first year and $1 billion over four years when in reality it cost $1.1b in the first nine months.

It is not my approach to respond to accusations via the media (Times, May 23) and, following this note, I will enter into no further correspondence on this matter. The point of my letter was, clearly, that defining “hate speech” is impossible and very dangerous. That is all. May I respectfully suggest that Mr Mercer re-read my letter, especially the part he refers to. Read correctly, with the preamble: “So where does Mr Little stand when enumerable people shout?” and the satirical question that follows: “You think that may just qualify as hateful and inciting violence?”, and with the other examples, it is very clear that I am pointing to what I consider a despicable common practice. May I suggest that the “hate and abuse” is only in Mr Mer-
cer’s mind. Unfortunately, this is the short-sighted labelling that is so prevalent in the world with people only too ready to, and I paraphrase; cast the first stone. May God bless you Sir.

Airport to Botany rapid transit We appreciate and happy hear the news about the Airport to Botany rapid transit project being led by Auckland Transport. We need transport from Botany to airport direct asap. Thanks.

How’s that for irony?
I find it ironic that Auckland City, who vigorously oppose efforts by our local community to restrict heights of buildings surrounding Stockade Hill, promote the panoramic views from Stockade Hill in their June edition of ‘Our Auckland’ monthly magazine.
Graham Mansergh Howick
Punishment did fit crime I have to disagree with Dr Schmidt’s view that the punishment handed to Israel Folau does not fit the crime (Feedback, Times, May 30). It is true that there are many examples of sportspeople behaving badly, in Australia and elsewhere, that have had
less harsh penalties imposed. The overwhelming difference in those situations was the perpetrator’s willingness to accept that they had broken the rules, caused offence or distress to members of the community, and damaged the reputation of their employer. Israel has recognised none of these. Perhaps Israel should adopt the practice of many high profile figures in having a public social media profile accessible to fans and the general public, and a second private profile accessible only to those with a personal relationship to the star. That way the many young people who choose to follow him because they admire his on-field ability and can do so without being subjected to material which challenges their place in an accepting society.

What about climate change? I have two questions for my MP, Simeon Brown. Does he accept the warning from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) that mankind has 12 years to plan a rapid decrease in CO2 emissions? What is he going to do about it?

We do not receive any additional funding from Auckland Council or the government, nor do we pay a dividend to Auckland Council.

Parker is a title contender A
s the only man to beat Andy Ruiz, Joseph Parker deserves a crack at the four world professional heavyweight boxing titles the Mexican won with his shock seven-round technical knockout win against Britain’s Anthony Joshua. This despite the fact that pre-fight Parker had joined Eddie Hearn’s management team in the belief it would advance his chances of having a second crack at Joshua. In what was the biggest heavyweight upset since Buster Douglas stopped Mike Tyson in Tokyo in 1990, the flabby 122kg Ruiz demonstrated deceptive speed, endurance and punching power in his Madison Square Garden victory. “Don’t under-estimate this little fat boy,” Ruiz had warned Joshua. Joshua had decked the challenger in the third round only to be floored himself by Ruiz’ bolo right. Further heavy barrages from Ruiz sent a groggy Joshua to the canvas twice in the seventh before referee Mike Griffin stopped the fight. With 22 wins, 21 by knockout, unbeaten 2012 Olympic champion Joshua had only been taken the full 12 rounds once, against Parker who had won the vacant WBO crown from Ruiz in Auckland in 2016. Having won 33 of his 34 fights, 21 by KO, that close majority decision loss to Parker remains the only one of Ruiz’ career. At 1.93m and 112kg, Parker is taller than Ruiz but 10kg lighter, with fast
hands and a good jab. Unfortunately he didn’t have Ruiz’ willingness to take the fight to Joshua. Nor did he have the strength to mix it with brawler Dillon Whyte in his only other loss as a pro.Since then, however, he has muscled up and quickly knocked out Alexander Flores in Christchurch in December 2018. Into that fight he also brought Whyte’s brawling style and was lucky not to have been disqualified for punching below the belt. Parker is a personable 27-year-old who remains the best heavyweight New Zealand has produced since dynamic puncher David Tua. However we still have yet to see the best of him. If he is to beat past and present champions Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and Ruiz, he needs to mix smart boxing with a killer instinct. Tua will always regret he didn’t take risks for reward when he failed to take the fight to Lennox Lewis in his one crack at the world crown. Having seen Ruiz prosper for having the courage to mix it with Joshua, Parker probably regrets he didn’t do the same. Hopefully the time will come when he gets another chance against another current champion, be it Ruiz or WBC knockout king Wilder. Meanwhile the world is Ruiz’ oyster, with him having the option of giving Joshua another crack at his four belts or go for a unification

Over the past week, HPCC representatives have been out in public touring two coveted cups and a treasured shield, won during the 201819 Auckland club cricket season. The club’s skippers wanted to show and share with their local communities and supporters the club’s men’s premier side’s trophies for their victories in the always tough two-day championship and T20 competition. The other trophy is probably the most important – Auckland Cricket’s club of the year. At the Barrel Inn in Cook Street and at the Howick Community RSA, with

Smith chalks up 100 first team games at BBAFC O
n Saturday Bucklands Beach AFC celebrated with Josh Smith, his 100th first team game when they played Waitemata in NRFL Div 1 at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Smith has been at the club since 2002 when, at the age of 6, he played for the Orcas and has continued on to play his whole football career at Bucklands Beach. He has played in the top youth teams for the club and over the years won many ‘player of the year’ awards. Last season he was the club’s ‘Senior Men’s Player of the Year’. A consistent goal scorer for the club, top goal scorer for the first team last season with 15 goals, he now finds himself tied for the top goal scorer in NRFL Div 1 with eight goals so far for the season. Smith made his debut for the first team in 2014 when the team played AFF Div 1 and has been with the team since then. They won the league that year and went on to win the Conference League in 2016. They were runners-up in NRFL Div 2 2018 which gained them promotion to NRFL Div 1 for this
year. It’s fair to say he’s seen a lot of success at Bucklands Beach. Andy Pullar, the club President, said: “Fantastic achievement by an outstanding young man. Josh is an unassuming character off the field - on the field he is one of those players you should never take your eyes off. “His pace and ability to make something from nothing makes him a constant threat. The club is super proud of Josh and look forward to the next 100 games.” Though Smith didn’t score on Saturday, Bucklands Beach won the game 3-0 and moved into 3rd place on the table.
Premiers dominate in second half
Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers eventually stamped their authority on their match on Saturday beating Papatoetoe 34-6. After a dicey opening, Pakuranga gradually put on the pressure, going into half-time 6-5 down. “The last 10 minutes in that first half were strong,” said PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini. “Then in the second half the boys stood up and played some really good rugby. “ It could have been a very different story though with Papatoetoe missing three opportunities in the opening 40. “In the second half we just regrouped and started playing the game that we train for.”
RESULTS:
Josh Smith has been at Bucklands Beach AFC since the age of six.
