Students left behind as bus overcrowding continues By THERESE HENKIN

ith heavy backpacks and their first lesson to get to, seven Somerville Intermediate students were stranded at the bus stop on Tuesday morning thanks to an overcrowded bus. This isn’t the first time it’s happened and parents suspect it won’t be the last. Jatinder Sidhu says she waits with her daughter Samar at the bus stop
every morning to make sure there’s enough room for her on the bus. Samar, who is in her first year at Somerville Intermediate, catches the 434 bus from 470 Chapel Road which also services Botany Downs Secondary College, Howick Intermediate and Howick College during the school term. “The buses that come through Chapel Road and Kilkenny Drive are always full,” Jatinder says. “When the bus arrives children
are either seated on the floor or standing all the way from the back of the bus to right next to the bus driver.” On several occasions the bus has been so full that her daughter and several others from Somerville Intermediate have been left behind at the bus stop. “The bus drivers sometimes have to stop more children from getting on and, rightly so, because children are so squished together they can
hardly move,” she says. “Somerville school has come to help many times by sending their school van to pick up the stranded students.” The problem with this, she says, is that often by the time the Somerville van arrives, the kids are already late to school and miss part of their first class. “It is a very sad state to see children in such a situation in the morning. They are about to begin
the school day, and they should be focussed but instead they are exhausted by the time they reach the school gates.” Jatinder says she and the other parents are starting their work days late because they can’t just leave their kids at the bus stop, in case the bus doesn’t take them. There must be “little hope” for the children waiting at the five stops after her daughters, she says. ➤ Turn to Page 3

rangling four black Labradors for a photoshoot was no easy feat. They’re inquisitive, playful and full of energy. But in between belly scratches and tug-o-war, these dogs have a very special job ahead of them. Rocco, Raven, Rufus and Ryder are in training to become assistance dogs to help individuals whose lives are impacted by disability. All in various stages of their six month training programme, they are learning basic obedience, social behaviour training, home behaviour training and specific task training. “These dogs change lives. They give people living with disability the care and support they need, and also give them some of their independence back,” says trainer Tracy Huff. Assistance Dogs NZ caters for a broad range of disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and even diabetes. “Everybody’s situation is different which is why individualising our dogs’ training is very important,” she says. Tracy says they look at what each dog is naturally good at, and play to their strengths. She says some dogs have a flare to do certain things

“Or does the dog need to be trained to sit beside a child while they play because they don’t have any friends?” says Tracy. She say’s the earlier a child gets an assistance dog, the greater the benefits. “About 90 per cent of our clients are children which is great because the dog is there to help them during their key stages of development, which can make all the difference,” she says. Assistance Dogs NZ is a non-government funded charity, so they need your help. They rely on donations
from the community to breed, train and place assistance dogs in the homes that need them most. “Unfortunately we are growing faster than we can meet the demand. “We currently have a three-and-a-half year waiting list for our dogs,” Tracy says. “We have so many people who need the help that an assistance dog can give, but we simply don’t have the money, resources or trainers to get that many dogs out to people,” she says. But she says community donations and puppy spon-
sorships go a long way. For as little as $5 a week, you can help raise and train one of the assistance puppies. The Puppy Sponsorship Programme aims to support the essential costs of breeding and raising assistance puppies. Most of the costs involve veterinary care, nutrition, training equipment and support for volunteer puppy raisers. ■■ If you want to find out more about sponsoring an assistance puppy visit our website www.assistancedogstrust.org.nz/puppy-sponsorship-programme/
A group of about 30 residents braved the rain on Saturday morning as they converged on Tarnica Park in Northpark to publicly voice their concerns about ongoing antisocial activity at the green space. The meeting was organised by locals Gordon and Maxine Luke with help from Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who’s working with the residents in an effort to address the problem. It was attended by Howick Local Board members
Garry Boles, Adele White, Mike Turinsky and board chairman David Collings. Mr Ross and police sergeant Tim Riley encouraged residents to phone 111 and report all serious incidents at the park. A petition was circulated and signed at the meeting calling for the local board to fund the installation of lights at the park to deter unruly youths and criminal activity. Ross said, “It’s clearly a significant issue for members of the public to come out in

the pouring rain because they are so frustrated with the problems happening in their local park.” Mr Boles, who’s also a senior constable with
Counties Manukau Police, told the crowd that he would recommend getting a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) report done on the park to determine the best way to deter criminal activity there. Some of the residents said they plan to attend the Howick Local Board’s next business meeting along with Mr Ross, at the Pakuranga Library building on March 18, to present the petition and raise the issue again.

Before they begin training each pup is assigned to a specific client and their training is refined to meet the unique needs of their new owner. “Does the dog need specific go-get-help training? Resident: Heavy trucks a danger By Nick Krause
A
Clevedon woman has stopped short of calling for a total ban on heavy trucks on West Road following another incident involving a near miss on the narrow, twisty road. Lianne Inkster has lived on the treacherous road for a quarter of a century and has seen it closed on numerous occasions over the years after trucks have blocked the road after failing to take the steep grade near her house. On one occasion the power went out during the attempted rescue of a heavy truck. Her patience is exhausted now. “I just about saw my daughter get wiped out by a truck. “That’s why I rang council,” she said. You’re playing Russian Roulette – the truck-trailer just cut the corner. A lot of Clevedon residents would agree that West Road is too tight. It’s just dangerous. It’s too narrow.” In early February “one massive trailer got stuck” on the steep grade outside her home. The road

➤➤Turned from page 1 “We have tried to reach the school and (Auckland Transport) AT for help but we get told somebody will look into it and then nothing happens.” Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan says AT monitors this service daily. “We have the largest size bus available running these trips. Our data shows these trips are very close to full capacity but not overloaded, apart from one instance when the original bus broke down and a smaller one replaced it,” he says. Hannan says the Certificate of
Loading allows up to 101 students in total, and AT data shows the highest count at 86 students. He says there are clear markings on the bus to show passengers where they should and shouldn’t be standing. “There are three other school buses that serve Somerville Intermediate that duplicate the 434 route to some extent – 433, 436 and 435,” He says. “The 433 has quite a lot of capacity and covers the segment of Chapel Rd north of Kilkenny Dr. The other two services are also almost at capacity.”

was blocked until a tow truck arrived. It can hours to clear. “I’ve been for 25 years...there have been too many to count. West Road can’t actually do it – it’s not wide enough,” Inkster said. “They need to put them down a different route of get them off Google maps. “I know we probably can’t ban the trucks from coming up here – I know it won’t happen but they could do the road up to take the vehicles.” Inskter said police have
attended many incidents over the years. Police said: “As it’s a question about the road, it’s really something for the roading authority (AT) to comment on.” An Auckland Transport spokesperson: “NZTA designates certain routes that are suitable and recommended for what are called high productivity motor vehicles. “This is not a recommended route but there is nothing legally to stop trucks using it. The road doesn’t appear to have a weight limit restriction.”
Howick Ratepayers and Residents pay tribute to treasurer Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association is devastated by the loss of Robert McCallum. It was a huge shock to all in the ratepayer community to learn of the sudden death of our valued committee member Robert Mc Callum. Robert and his wife Pauline have been members of the Howick Ratepayers and Residents
Association since 2010. Robert’s work had been tireless since joining the committee, holding various offices including deputy chairperson and treasurer. Intelligent, articulate, energetic and very hard-working, his cheerful disposition and his ability to call up facts and figures could be relied upon to make a valued contribution to every meeting.

He is the only New Zealander in 22 years to win a trip to the US Space and Rocket Centre in Alabama, USA. The young maths teacher was recently awarded the ASG Space Camp Teacher Ambassador of the Year Award at a ceremony hosted by Minster for Education Chris Hipkins at Parliament. “When students tell me they feel bad because they failed a maths assessment, I often share my story of how I dropped out of an engineering degree. MP’s complaint handed to Serious Fraud Office Police have referred to the Serious Fraud Office a complaint received in October last year from former National MP Jami-Lee Ross in relation to the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act. Ross was expelled from the Party and is now independent MP for Botany. National Party leader Simon Bridges last year denied any infractions of the Act. Police said the complaint has been referred to the SFO as they hold the appropriate mandate to look further into matters raised by the investigation to date. ”While the SFO make their inquiries we are not in a position to make comment on the police investigation,” police said.

It said in a press statement on Tuesday that it had received a referral from the police about a complaint they received in October last year in relation to the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act. “The SFO does not disclose the detail of ongoing investigations to protect the integrity of the investigation and those involved. PAK’nSAVE getting closer to reality for Highland Park W
ith a resource consent now lodged with Auckland Council, PAK’nSAVE Highland Park is edging closer to becoming a reality. Lindsay Rowles, GM property & membership for Foodstuffs North Island is excited this step has been made. “We know residents in the Highland Park area want more certainty and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to take the next crucial step. “We’ve submitted plans to Council for a fantastic shopping precinct which will include a state-of-the-art supermarket and room for other businesses and food service outlets. It’s important to us we provide a superior place to shop, be entertained and to work. That’s what we’re going to deliver.” The site of the old mall will now become a development zone with strict health and safety protocols. Locals will have noticed hoardings erected to prohibit access to most of the former mall, he said. The site will be managed by Colliers to ensure it is as tidy and clutter-free as possible. All bar one of the previous tenants have chosen to exit the

former mall to make way for the new development. “We appreciate that some tenants had been in the area for some time and their move may have been upsetting for some residents – however we are committed to bringing New Zealand’s lowest food prices to the area and we’re now ready to roll on the next phase and look forward to working with remaining tenants in the centre to ensure the precinct is a well catered for shopping experience. ” said Rowles. Countdown continues to hold a lease at the location and shoppers will continue to have access to the store for some time yet. Like anyone carrying out building projects, Foodstuffs is unable
to say with certainty when building works will commence, but the development team anticipates that once relevant consents are granted, works will take about 24 months to complete. Rowles has plenty of other projects on his hands but says that the Highland Park site is one of the most important in the Foodstuffs stable. “We think locals deserve a fantastic new PAK’nSAVE which will offer our famous low prices – and we’re excited to get to this stage of the process. We are confident this store will be an asset to the community, offer a great career path for more than 100 people and contribute in many ways to East Auckland’s vibrancy.”

Visitors will find heritage and modern roses, perennials new and old-fashioned, bromeliads and air plants, colourful subtropicals, native plants, deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees, palms, damson plum trees, climbers, orchids, daffodil bulbs, herbs, irises and day lilies. There are so many treasures gardeners are certain to find something to squeeze into their own gardens however small or large. Ayrlies, pronounced ‘airlees’, is recognised as one of the world’s most significant gardens. Often termed ‘a living work of art’, Ayrlies has been 54 years in the making. Creator Bev McConnell, now 88 years-old, is the archetypal sustainable gardener. She has combined form, colour, and often-unexpected plant combinations that delight visitors from around the world. The garden, held in a charitable trust with the McConnell family the key sponsor, needs to find ways to increase funding so that it too is sustainable into the future.
The plant fair is a key event and opportunity for anyone interested in buying plants not usually available, or just having a fun day out in a special southeast Auckland haven. Entry includes access to enjoy the autumn colour and walk the 6 hectares of internationallyacclaimed garden and 16 hectares of wetlands which will refresh your wellbeing. Visit ayrlies.co.nz/home/ and share with whanau and friends. ■■ What: Ayrlies Plant Fair ■■ Where: 125 Potts Road, Whitford ■■ When: 9am – 3pm, Friday April 5 and Saturday April 6 ■■ How much: Tickets $10 cash only to be purchased at the gate (it is usually $20) includes entry to walk the garden and wetland. Due to health & safety, unfortunately no children under 12 or dogs permitted Light refreshments will be available to purchase along with live music.

Eyes of Howick – Proudly caring for local eyes Being World Glaucoma Week, it’s a great time to profile a local eye care business, Eyes of Howick. Kristine Jensen, Optometrist at Eyes of Howick, has owned the practice for more than 15 years. She says, “It has been wonderful to be part of a profession that continues to evolve in order to better serve our community. Optometry has gained an increasing medical focus, which means our patient’s eye and general health is a priority”. Both Kristine and optometrist colleague Teresa Hsu have a combined Optometry experience of more than 30 years. Both being therapeutically qualified, they can diagnose and treat several eye conditions. Furthermore, they have both undertaken more extensive training to be able to treat Glaucoma. Teresa reminds us of three take-home messages about glaucoma: ■ Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in New Zealand with over 90,000

Kiwis over the age of 40 currently have glaucoma. 50 per cent of these don’t know they have it. The only way to detect it is to have regular eye exams. ■ If detected early enough, treatment can prevent progression and preserve eyesight. ■ Although older people are at higher risk, people of all ages including babies and young adults can get glaucoma. In addition to the above skills, Teresa is passionate about fitting contact lenses and has a keen interest in dry eye, having recently attended the NZ Contact Lens Society Conference. Changes needed in mental health N
ew Zealand is experiencing a mental health crisis and some of the numbers around this issue are staggering. Almost 670 Kiwis took their own lives between July 2017 and June 2018. That’s the highest number since records began and it was the fourth year in a row the number has risen. The number of girls and women who died from suicide from 2017-2018 increased by 44 to 193. More than 470 boys and men in New Zealand died from suicide during that period, which were 18 more than the previous year. Each one of these deaths represents family torn apart and loved ones left to ask why they didn’t see the signs that something was wrong or whether they could have done something to help. As I said recently in Parlia-

#Balance for Better was the theme for the Zonta Club of East Auckland that recently celebrated the International Women’s Day at Howick Club. Guest speaker Stacey Mitchell described the work of Child Rescue NZ in rescuing girls from exploitation and slavery, and empowering them to engage in education and business. Pene Frost from Stand for Children (Half Moon Bay) was presented with the Rose Day Award given to women whose commitment and influence has made a significant impact for families in the community. Pene was recognised for her four decades of leadership, passion and compassion in caring for some of the most vulnerable children. This evening was the first of

MP for Botany ment, the group with the highest suicide rates is men aged 25-44. There’s a lot of attention given to our high youth suicide rate, but men need support as well. Men aged 25-44 commit suicide four times more frequently than women in the same age group. The issues of mental health and addiction were a major focus for the Labour Party during the last election campaign, but 18 months into the Government’s term in office we are yet to see any concrete action taken on these issues. What they have done is launch an inquiry into it. The experts involved have completed their work and we’re
all now waiting to hear what will happen next. I urge the Government to identify gaps in New Zealand’s mental health care and I agree with the Mental Health Foundation’s recent submission to the Budget policy statement on this subject. It said, in part, “We will not create better mental health within New Zealand by continuing with an imbalanced focus of resources on acute mental health services. “Instead, New Zealand must increase its efforts in promoting wellbeing and preventing mental health problems from occurring.” This is a complicated issue and it cannot be solved overnight, but it is something I intend to focus on as Botany’s MP. Our community is not immune from the trauma caused by selfharm. ■ Jami-Lee Ross MP for Botany

hiding their assets offshore. New Zealand will send financial account information to these territories on an annual basis. These countries have enacted, or are expected to soon enact, legislation that enables them to send the same information to New Zealand. “The 30 new countries are spread around the globe, from the Caribbean to Europe, Asia, the Pacific, Africa and
the Middle East. The list includes jurisdictions such as Panama, Switzerland, Macao, the Cook Islands and Nigeria, said Nash. The AEOI enables information sharing about details of accounts at many institutions, including banks, private equity funds, investment advisors and some brokers and trusts. Inland Revenue will review the information and verify that correct tax
is being paid on offshore investments. “New Zealand taxpayers are strongly advised to check they have correctly accounted for their offshore investments. If not, they should make a voluntary disclosure to Inland Revenue without delay,” said Nash. “The Coalition Government is determined that our tax system should be fair. We will ensure trans-national financial activity does not seek to evade tax obligations. In 2018 we passed legislation to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, and have recently signalled our intention to ensure providers of digital services also meet their obligations. “New Zealand supports the growing international consensus about the need to eliminate opportunities for tax evasion.”

New Zealand is expanding its global ability to combat tax evasion by joining forces with authorities in 30 countries and jurisdictions. Cabinet has agreed to add another 30 territories to the current list of 60 jurisdictions where New Zealand has informationsharing agreements as part of a global standard known as the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI). “The addition of 30 new territories reflects increased international cooperation by OECD and G20 countries to crack down on tax evasion,” said Revenue Minister Stuart Nash. “It further increases our ability to ensure all New Zealanders pay their fair share of tax, including those who have financial interests in other countries. It was with surprise and joy that I came across an earlier copy of the H&P Times to note the coming of their 47th year of publication. This takes me back to when Reay Smith single-handedly assumed the reins of the paper, devoting many hours of hard work to bring it to its high standards of today with the very able assistance of her now husband Brian Neben. They have both been extremely avid supporters of anything to do with Eastern Suburbs of Auckland, but more so of Howick‘s activities. Too many to name – Howick Santa Parade / fund raisers / prizes / publicity /helping those in need of support, she was never apologetic for her confrontational manner, something I learnt from her early in my association with Reay who has an outstanding knowledge for recall of business and Council matters Howick. She has never to my knowledge received the acknowledgment and accolades she has so rightly earned from within the community other than from NZ Newspapers, outside Howick. Congratulations to Reay and Brian particularly for your acquisition of full ownership, a hard slog it’s been. I can’t keep the coffee hot much longer. It’s always been a happy association.

Huawei has rights too
I am awed by the courage of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei who said there is ‘no way the US can crush us’ and that America doesn’t represent the world. I totally agree. America only represents America and, as far as I understand, nowhere else. The US is acting the big bully of the world and we all know that sooner or later the bully will be put in its rightful place, possibly the time being now as the US is in dire straits, with regards to all aspects of life be it spiritually, socially, naturally, economically and mentally. I don’t know about others but, to me, the US is one country that I have no desire to visit. The country is a spiritual nightmare as all sorts of anti-God teachings spring from there. Socially, it has a hand in every country’s political dilemma bringing about a whole lot of unnecessary suffering for those countries’ people , most of whom are called ‘refugees’. Nothing in the US is natural, GMO crops, toxic chemicals in their agricultural produce, carcinogenic drugs and therapies to combat US-created cancer. I am so glad that NZ farmers are not brought into the GMO control. Economically, the US government is at its lowest – take a look at the poor and homeless living on the streets and footpaths there. The number of mass killings/ shootings must surely be an indication of the mental problems /depression issues that the US faces but won’t admit and confront as well as their refusal to admit wrongdoing. It is al right for the US to spy on others, but woe betide to whoever dares to even think of spying on the US, hence the arrest of Huawei’s Ms Meng Wanzhou. On the level of truth, there isn’t much coming from the US really. Iran may be a country subject to US trade sanctions, but what right has the US to demand that Huawei, a business independent of the US, must not have business links with Iran? Good on Canada and the UK for being sensible in not toeing the US threat, hook, line and sinker against using Huawei technology.

Howick Local Board’s priorities While it has been difficult at times obtaining the Howick Local Board’s interest regarding environmental issues in our local Macleans Park, the Board has made quite a thing about wanting us to be fit and healthy. The installation of fitness equipment in Macleans Park is one example. This seemed to be an unnecessary expense when the park provides 36 hectares of prime coastal land for walking and jogging. It is not just the people in our community that the Board now wants to be fit and healthy; the Board is also concerned about the fitness and health of dogs. The following is from the Board’s annual budget for 2019/2020: “We aim to have dedicated dog exercise areas to support our active and healthy local outcome.” I suggest that the Board needs to rethink its priorities.

Z Chefs Auckland president Jasbir Kaur is helping put New Zealand cuisine on the map, teaching budding chefs across America and Canada how to inject Kiwi flavour into their dishes. “It is a real honour to be showcasing New Zealand’s unique cooking styles and ingredients on the global stage”, says Kaur, who is general manager of Ignite Colleges, home of Auckland’s newest cookery training programme. This week Kaur, from Pakuranga, has headed to Miami, Seattle, San Francisco and Vancouver, where she will represent New Zealand at leading international culinary arts schools, delivering Kiwi-inspired cooking demonstrations to the world’s future chefs. Along with a large dose of Kiwi flavour (including horopito and pikopiko), Kaur plans to add a Spanish twist to her demonstration dishes. Both are cuisines she is passionate about after working at Barcelona’s Michelin-starred Disfrutar and representing New Zealand at the World Tapas competition in Valladolid two years ago. Last year Ignite Colleges hosted the first ever Australasian Tapas competition, which saw the winner compete at the World Tapas event in Spain under Kaur’s expert guidance. ”I am very excited about sharing my expertise with chefs in

While there, she will wow students with innovative dishes such as seabass cooked in manuka salt with olive and seaweed tapenade, infused with pikopiko, pickled tapioca pearls and cauliflower and horopito custard. “This dish combines cooking techniques I learned at Disfrutar with New Zealand ingredients that many overseas chefs will

They might think it is a bit unusual, but I am sure they are going to love it.” Kaur – who will also be judging a culinary competition in Miami - hopes the tour will open up opportunities for American and Canadian chefs to visit New Zealand to deliver their own master classes and cooking demonstrations to Ignite Colleges’ Level 3, 4 and 5 students. “At Ignite Colleges we deliver world-class cookery training that prepares chefs not only for careers in New Zealand, but also to succeed on the global stage,” she says. “Connecting with chefs around the world is a great way to promote our national cuisine offshore and help New Zealand’s future chefs gain the international exposure they need to succeed.”

The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method 1 the difficulties of Page resolving

Zhou graduates from Harvard
F
ormer Macleans College student Frank Zhou has successfully graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Chemistry. On his graduation, he was awarded the highest honour “Summa Cum Laude”. At Harvard, Zhou (Mansfield House 2010 – 2013) was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year (top 24 in class), named a John Harvard Scholar three years straight (top 5 per cent) and was the recipient of the Harris Prize for an outstanding combined record of achievement in studies, character and extra-curricular activity. While at Harvard, Zhou also performed well in other areas. He was a member of the university choir, the general manager of Harvard Krokodiloes – Harvard’s oldest and finest a cappella singing group, a class marshal, and a volunteer tutor in the Boston community. During his time at Macleans College, Zhou was named Macleans College Dux twice (2012 and 2013). He was deputy head boy, a peer support leader for Mansfield House, leader of choir, and cofounder of the News Committee. In the 2010 CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) he achieved Top in New Zealand for IGCSE Global Perspectives and in the 2011 CIE he achieved Top in the World in AS Chemistry and

AS Classical Studies, and equal top in New Zealand in AS Mathematics. In 2012 he was Top in New Zealand for A Level Chemistry. In 2012 and 2013 he was awarded a NZQA Premier Scholarship Award. At present Zhou is working in Massachusetts as an analyst at Health Advances, a strategy consulting firm specialising in health-

care technologies. Zhou’s mother Julie Feng said “The growth in my son Frank is due to Macleans College, due to all the committed and dedicated teachers. Thank you so much for the wonderful learning environment you provide to our kids, your words of encouragement and guidance, your love, support and assistance.”
Spending a morning picking up rubbish was fun, said Emma Knight, a Year 10 student at Botany Downs Secondary College. However, there was a serious reason why Emma and other students from BDSC gave up their morning to do this. It was an activity marking the start of national Sea Week. “Eighty per cent of pollution in the sea comes from the land. Plastic makes up much of this pollution and most of what the students picked up was plastic,” a school spokesperson said. Walking around the streets near the college, students filled bags with rubbish. Small and large items were picked out of the
gutters and off grass berms. “If left, these pollutants make their way into the storm water drains, down the streams and into the Tamaki River before entering the Waitemata Harbour where they pose a threat to marine life.” Before the students set off, Enviroschools lead students Abi Low and Joshua Dheda talked about the 1+ A Day movement. “If everyone picks up one or more pieces of plastic from the ground every day, what a difference that would make to the amount of rubbish finding its way into the rivers and sea.” To see more about 1+ see www.youtube.com/ watch?v=GNrAlzZHBEY
Classy, compact black and white kitchen Amy Johnston grew up with her mother’s love of cooking and enjoying food. She says she loved the idea of a communal, open kitchen “and the centre of the kitchen is a cook top instead of a bench top.”
her wines” Amy says her husband Vincent was keen on a black and white kitchen. As a result, they choose a modern, white and bright kitchen, made from white woodgrain melamine and 20mm white engineered stone with black contrasting handles.
“In my mother’s kitchen we used to cook on either side of the benchtop and that’s why I wanted the same in my kitchen — it being a compact kitchen, we didn’t have enough space for an island and wanted to maximise space” says Amy. Jag was open to the idea, also suggesting adding an oils and spice drawer below it. “This worked well, freeing up the benchtops for working space” says Nairi, their Jag Kitchen designer. This being Amy and Vincent’s first home, they wanted the kitchen to be the main feature. While she admits that having a baby and trying to renovate the kitchen at the same time may not be such a great idea, she is extremely happy with the result. She gives credit to Jag Kitchens designer Nairi’s work who achieved a quick turnaround. “We had a very tight time-frame and managed to do a lot in just

four weeks,” says Amy. “I’ve moved around a bit and knew exactly what I wanted, and the communication between us was very good. Nairi has been amazing to work with,” she smiles. “The pantry we included is a Blum space tower with five inner drawers to maximize storage space. There are plenty of cupboards on the back of the island, giving Amy extra storage options as well as a benchtop to work on”.
“We made a lot of changes in the kitchen, broke through the wall and extended it as well. Being an old State House, it needed a lot of work,” says Amy. She says they were surprised to find natural Rimu flooring below the lino. “We even had a quaint meat

cupboard, part of which is still outside. The old kitchen didn’t have an extraction fan which we have now installed. Nairi says “Every part of the kitchen has been, maximised for storage. There’s even storage on the back of the peninsular, which Amy has used to store
“While melamine is our most affordable product, it is also our most durable. The stone we chose was part of our Select range, which is a range of our popular colours offered at a square meter rate, rather than per slab; this keeps costs down” says Nairi. “We knew what we wanted and Nairi made the process easy. We’d recommend Jag to anyone wanting a quick turn around with high quality results” says Amy.

Smaller regions dominate new asking price highs “T
he New Zealand property market is in a good place and there was a sense of relative stability during the month of February”, said realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. “Unlike the Australian situation, where there’s reportedly a long-term high in the number of properties sitting on the market, that’s not the case here in New Zealand,” she said. The total number of homes for sale nationally in February 2019 was 26,850, marginally down 0.3 per cent compared to the previous year. Five years ago (February 2014) there were 41,731 homes listed for sale nationally as a comparison. “We’ve been through the heady days of frantic activity and uncertainty and we have found our new normal,” said Taylor. “It’s characterised by a steady market, stable pricing and a pragmatic approach by buyers and sellers. “It’s a more stable environment where buyers and sellers can have more certainty and realistic expectations about what they can achieve in the current housing market.” This level of stability and ongoing engagement in the New Zealand property market is reflected in the 1,037,347 unique browsers on realestate.co.nz during February, up 18.6 per cent up on the same period last year. “It’s business as usual,” said Taylor. “These numbers are consistent with summertime browsing even though it’s a shorter month.”
National picture
Nationally, real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that compared to February 2018, there was a 6.5 per cent fall in new listings (to 10,535 listings) and a drop of only 0.3 per cent in total listings (to 26,850 listings) in February 2019. Asking prices fell 2.8 per cent to $675,727 compared to January 2019, however there were regions that were up and others down, which evened out the result across the country. “This needs to be taken into context of a big January, when there was a record asking price, largely driven by increases in the smaller regions,” said Taylor. “As a result, we are seeing a slight adjustment in February, although four of the smaller regions still recorded all-time asking price highs in February (Waikato, Gisborne, Central North Island and Manawatu / Wanganui).” Across the country there is an ongoing see-saw for the top spot in average asking price between the Central-Otago Lakes region and the Auckland region. “The Central Otago-Lakes area has climbed back up over the $1 million-plus mark in February, leapfrogging the Auckland region’s average asking prices once more,” said Taylor. This is mainly due to some top

end properties hitting the market in the Queenstown district.
New property listings
Of the five main regions, only the Wellington region recorded an increase in new listings in February (up 6.9 per cent compared to the previous year, representing 886 new listings). In the smaller regions, new listings in Central-Otago Lakes were up 11.8 per cent (to 209 listings) and the West Coast region was up 7.6 per cent (totalling 71 new listings) compared to the same time last year. Of the other smaller regions, 11 recorded decreases in new listings in February compared with February 2018.
All-time asking price highs in four regions Once again, it was the smaller regions which dominated new records in average asking price highs. The Gisborne region led the charge, with a 6.7 per cent increase in average asking price to $445,938 compared to January 2019. This was followed by the Waikato region (the only major region to hit a new record) with the average asking price reaching $609,771 in February, up 3.5 per cent from the previous month. The Manawatu-Wanganui region was up 1.4 per cent to $387,122, while Central North Island was up 1.2 per cent to $498,380 compared to the prior month.
Auckland region average asking prices lift by a mere $233 Three months after the Auck-
land region took the crown off Central Otago-Lakes as the most expensive in terms of average asking prices, the South Island region has bounced back again. The two regions were remarkable in their own right, said Taylor. “For the first time since April 2016, the Auckland region was so steady compared to the previous month, average asking prices lifted by a mere $233 in February.” Auckland’s average asking price in February was $960,715 compared to $960,482 in January 2019. By contrast, CentralOtago Lakes leapt 7.5 per cent to an average asking price of $1,010,021. “Back in November, we questioned whether the fall in average asking prices in this region could have been due to the impact of the Overseas Investment Act. Our thinking is that the drop is either directly or indirectly based on the significant number of high-end Queenstown properties on the market in the month leading up to the passing of the Bill,” said Taylor. “It appears that the market has a life of its own, with a steady climb in asking prices over the past three months.”

Sales results stable
Bindi Norwell, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand said: “The sales results we’ve seen over the past few months point to the industry being in a stable position, with a continued two-tiered market. Auckland has been relatively flat for some time now, whilst some of the regions across New Zealand have been experiencing strong growth.”

P
roperty values in New Zealand have grown by 0.7 per cent over the summer season, with the annual growth rate lifting very marginally from 2.9 per cent in January to 3 per cent last month, according to the CoreLogic QV February House Price Index results. Values in Auckland remain constrained as the index moved sideways in February, resulting in an annual drop of -0.9 per cent.
“Low affordability remains a significant handbrake on Auckland property values and while we have seen signs of vendors adjusting their expectations to get a sale, this approach is not city-wide,” said head of research, Nick Goodall. “Meanwhile, around the rest of the country there remains a shortage of properties listed for sale, which is ensuring that some price pressure remains.” “We continue to pay close
attention to property investor activity, with Government policy remaining an important influencer of potential profit for this segment. We believe that with robust fundamentals (strong - if slowing-population growth, low interest rates and a lack of supply, despite encouraging new build consent figures) the market outlook is solid, which should guard against any mass investor sell-offs. Significant value drops are therefore less likely.”

The latest Consumer Institute cost of living survey shows that general costs in providing rental property have increased faster than rental prices. In addition, wage increases were 66 per cent higher than rental price increases. “Rental property providers have been keeping rental costs down when many of their costs and the price they have to pay for new rental properties is increasing at a faster rate” said NZ Property Investors’ Federation executive officer, Andrew King. “It is also pleasing to see that wages are increasing at a faster rate than rental prices which

will continue to help tenants with their living costs”. House prices also increased at a faster rate than rental prices, reducing the return on buying new rental properties and making it more difficult to increase the supply of homes for tenants. The consumers list shows that four of the top items that increased in price over 2018 were directly related to providing rental homes for tenants. Home insurance: +15.2 per cent Petrol: +11.1 per cent Vehicle insurance: +7.2 per cent Local authority rates: +5.1 per cent
Construction costs: +3.6 per cent Property maintenance: +3.5 per cent Rent: +2.4 per cent The overall consumers price index increase was 1.9 per cent. However median weekly wages increased by 4 per cent. Home ownership costs were tenth in the list of issues that respondents were most concerned about. This reflects the fact that home loans to first home buyers have increased from 10 per cent to 17 per cent over the last three years, while property investor loans have fallen from 35 per cent to 17 per cent over the same period.

Jesse Wilde is creating hand-lathed collectible vinyl.

In a spin for music charity Ever wondered how music is created and captured on a vinyl record? With the renaissance for affection of the vinyl record in mind, a unique event is giving music enthusiasts the chance to see great original Kiwi songs played, recorded – and that work cut on a vinyl record – in three hours. Musician, songwriter, producer and now vinyl-cutter Jesse Wilde, is staging Journey to My Vinyl Destination, on Saturday, March 16, from 1pm. “It’s for vinyl record lovers and anyone who enjoys good music,” says Jesse, a former long-time Bucklands Beach resident. “You will see a live music performance recorded, mixed, and mastered and cut to vinyl right before your very eyes. The whole process of vinyl lathing, mixing and mastering for vinyl will be explained in this three-hour event.”
All the proceeds are going to music therapy, support and benevolent charity Music Helps Awhina Puoro, whose patrons are New Zealand music legends, Neil Finn and Lorde, Jesse says. Journey to My Vinyl Destination is reelin’ and a rockin’ at Jesse’s cool and modern Studio 38, home of his Wilde Records Recording Studios, in Airedale Street, Auckland City. “Good things take time,” Jesse says. “This is a celebration of the artistry of both live and recorded music in a world where digital platforms diminish its value and reduces music to a commodity. We’re creating hand-lathed collectible vinyl – tangible musical artefacts to cherish.” ■■ Journey to My Vinyl Destination – Good Things Take Time; Good Times Last Forever. Saturday, 16 March, 2019, at 1-4pm, at Wilde Records Recording Studios, Studio 38, 38 Airedale Street, Auckland City.
he organisers of the inaugural Howick Village Hop were thrilled with the turnout on what was to be the wettest day in months. The crowds were large. It started early in the morning with the sound of V8s driving into Picton Street in convoy. People from far and wide came to view the cars on display and chat to the proud owners. There was a People’s Choice award and this was won by Phil Monaghan with his 1971 International Pick Up. Second prize Scott Lambert (1967 Chev El Camino), 3rd Prize Peter Duffy (1932 Ford Coupe). It was fantastic to see car enthusiasts of all ages brave the weather and come see the impressive line-up. The streets were bright with beautiful cars dating back to 1927 (Model T Roadster). Cameras and chamois were both out in full force. The ladies were looking especially lovely as well, many sporting the 1950s Rockabilly styles. The hairstylists and airbrush tattoos were also a hit! Thank you all who got through the weather and came out to have a wonderful day! We look forward to seeing you all for a bigger and even better Howick Village Hop 2020!

(Never known to fail) O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruit of the Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, Assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Oh Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times) Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. The prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered. M.R.

Hornets wind back the clock
Howick win ARL Nines title The victorious Howick Hornets.
T
he Howick Hornets have won their first ever Sportsafe ARL Nines title after overcoming the Hibiscus Coast Raiders 22-4 in the Grand Final at Stanmore Bay Reserve on Saturday. It comes a year on from the Hornets winning the second-tier Pennant title at the tournament with coach Shaun Clark’s new-look side making the ideal start to their 2019 campaign. Fourteen unanswered points in the first half laid the platform for the Hornets with tries to Jesse Albrett, Richard Piper and Trent Bishop, leaving the host team in a state of shock at the end of the opening nine minutes. The Raiders hit back immediately in the second scoring through Korey Craig and looked to have a second a short time later via Nehumi Teu only for the fullback to have been ruled to have stepped into touch on his way to the line.

That seemed to spark Howick back into life as they promptly went down the other end and scored their fourth try thanks to Connor Morris, before Joshua Simeon put the icing on the cake with a late four-pointer to secure an emphatic victory. Earlier in the day the Manurewa Marlins won the second-tier Pennant title with a dramatic 18-14 golden point victory over Marist. After overcoming a 10-4 deficit at the break, Manurewa scored late to force golden point, before Nathan Simmons latched onto an offload metres out from the line to seal the win. The Howick Hornets 2011 Fox Memorial Championship team are pulling the boots back on and have challenged the 2019 Premier squad in an exhibition match. Ex stand-off Jason Tavita approached the club late last year with the idea but due to the Hornets going deep into the finals series, the game could not be arranged. With the Pakuranga Jaguars pulling out of a pre-season trial match, an opportunity to stage the exhibition game was too good to miss. With only a few exceptions, players Stephen Wakefield and Lee Wetherill, now living in Australia, and Anthony Gelling playing for Widnes in the UK Super League, the core group of players who played in the 2011 Grand Final winning team remain in Auckland and are up for the challenge. Two current players Tony Tuia and Paulos Latu are expected to turn out for the 2011 team and will be joined by club legends such as halfbacks Troy Becroft and Leroy Faavessi, front rowers Aiden Howard and David Mu, centres Mark Lamalu and Andrew Kitchener, winger Warren (Wazza) Bray, loose forward Andrew (Doodles) Wharton, second rowers Blake Ewe, Bunna Savage and Mafoa Filipi,.

Club co-chairman Bruce Campbell believes the game will generate huge interest across the league community and is picking the 2011 Champions to be a handful. “Most of the 2011 squad have only recently retired in the last two or three seasons and while they may be a little rusty, they always have an amazing winning culture.” Current premier coach Shaun Clark, who played for Manurewa against the 2011 Fox Champions remembers them as
a smart and very tough football team. “I don’t really know what to expect from the match but it has been a real bonus having ex players involved and sharing their knowledge with the wider group”. The 2019 season will be the Howick Hornets 10th consecutive season competing in Auckland Rugby League premier competition the Fox Memorial. The 2011 Grand Final win over the powerhouse of rugby league, the Otahuhu Leopards, was the club’s first and only Fox Memorial Championship. The current crop of players have gone close the last two seasons losing in the dying minutes of the semi-finals against the same team the Pt Chev Pirates. The 2011 team will be determined to demonstrate their Championship pedigree but expect the 2019 Premiers, who are fresh from being crowned champions in the annual ARL 9s tournament last weekend, to show they are one of the favourites this year to pick up the club’s second Fox Memorial. The game is set to kick off at midday on Saturday, March 16 at Paparoa Park. The Fox Memorial trophy will be on display and all are welcome to come along to the club.
