'It could have been us' In the wake of the terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch last Friday which claimed the lives of 50 people, the Times has spoken to many people including Nabi Mussa. He and his family have attended the mosque in Ben Lomond Crescent, the Islamic Ahlulbayt Foundation of New Zealand, for 15 years. He says the shooting is weighing heavily on the hearts of the entire Muslim community as they realise how easily it could have been them.
“I
t could have been any one of us,” says 24-year-old Nabi Mussa. Two weeks ago, Nabi sat across the table from a man who was one of the victims the Christchurch terror attacks. “I was meeting a good friend for dinner and my friend brought him with him. We chatted and laughed. “Over the weekend I saw the same
guy on the news. He had survived two gunshot wounds. “My friend told me he had gone down to Christchurch for the weekend. He happened to be praying for that one hour and in that hour his life changed. “It made me realise it could have been any one of us.” Nabi say’s the events that have shaken the nation have weighed

We have been praying ever since.” His voice shakes as he speaks. Nabi and his family have been going to the mosque on Ben Lomond Crescent for 15 years.

he Rev Dr Richard Waugh, National Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of New Zealand shares this statement said all New Zealanders are horrified by the tragic events at the mosques in Christchurch. Dr Waugh also serves as chairman of Auckland Church Leaders Meeting and chairman of National Church Leaders Aotearoa New Zealand Meeting. “We repudiate such hateful action and hold onto the promise of Scripture which says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” It is appalling beyond words what has happened and our prayers, thoughts and practical generosity extend to all Muslim families suffering so terribly at this time. We pray for the Police, ambulance staff and hospital staff working so hard to bring some comfort.” Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga condemned the Christchurch terror attack. “New Zealand is known as a place of peace, tolerance, safety and inclusiveness.

Whilst the perpetrator of this terror sought to attack these values, New Zealanders have responded with love and unity,” he said. “I am particularly heartened by the support being shown to our Muslim community across New Zealand and in Pakuranga with flowers and cards of sympathy being laid at both our local mosques. “My office is also available to provide assistance to anyone who may require it. We can be contacted on 09 572 0000 or email PakurangaMP@Parliament. govt.nz. “I send my thoughts, prayers, and love to the families of those lost and to those still fighting for their lives.” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross extends the deepest sympathies of the local community to all those affected by the mass shooting. “This was an act of unspeakable evil that has no place in New Zealand or anywhere else,” Mr Ross says.“The thoughts of our Botany community are with the victims of this atrocity
and their families.“People of all faiths have the right to be safe in their places of worship, as well as in their homes, their workplaces, and in public.“Members of this country’s Islamic community are as Kiwi as anyone else. They have just as much right to be here, to practice their faith and culture, and to go about their lives. Andrew Bayly, MP for Hunua, said the events in Christchurch last Friday were “despicable, dreadful and unexplainable”. “Emotions are naturally raw but what has become abundantly clear is how this has affected all New Zealanders,” he said. “The outpouring of sympathy, support and assistance has been overwhelming and welcome. “New Zealanders are rightly outraged that this event could and did take place on our shores, in one of our cities, to one of our communities. “We grieve with and alongside our New Zealand Muslim citizens.”

‘It could have been us’ ➤➤From page 1 “But I’ve been reminded that fear is very real in our community because racism is very real.” He says the attack has affected his mum the most. “The Muslim community is very isolated. Where I meet all kinds of people at work and through my studies...my mum meets her friends at the mosque. When she goes there she feels at home and she feels at peace. And the security of that has been shattered. Yes, the fear might fade but I don’t think it will ever be the same for her.” Nabi went to his mosque earlier in the week and says the reality of how much destruction one person can cause has really hit home. “Our mosques have no locked gates, no security. We welcome everyone. It’s one of the reasons why I am proud to be Muslim. Perhaps these things will change. “I went to our mosque [on Sunday] and everything was closed but it hit me, how many people are sometimes in our mosques at one time. “We hold a lot of gatherings especially around Ramadan and things like that and I realised what could happen if someone opened fire at one of these festivities; perhaps while people were walking out of the mosque. How much more bloodshed there would have been, how many more lives lost. Nabi says people at work have asked him if he thinks there will be retaliation from the Muslim community. “What I say to them is that forgiveness is at the core of the Muslim faith. Even in the most harrowing of times, we are taught to

forgive and I think this will carry a lot of people through this tragedy.” He says the attack has shown him why he is proud to call New Zealand home. “Everyone has come together to support the Muslim community. Our sense of safety has been shaken and our hearts broken but the support has been inspiring. “I spoke with a woman who had come to our mosque to pay her respects. She was a Christian and she was in the middle of doing a big assignment when she looked up where the mosque was in our area. “She brought flowers and she wanted to know how my family and I were doing. “I told her about my mum and she took her flower out of the fence. She said, ‘here, please take this home to your mum. Let her know she is in my prayers. “It was the most touching thing I think I have ever experienced.” And he says out of anywhere in the world he feels grateful to be here, in New Zealand, where everybody “stands as one”.
MUSLIM COMMUNITY SPEAKS Insha Allah (If God wills so). We as a community and New Zealand as a nation will come out of this tragedy better and stronger. Through our actions, our efforts and our behaviour towards each other in NZ we will defeat the evil plots of these Islamophobic terrorists, their supporters and their populist global leaders. Through our united action as a community and as a nation, we will not only overcome this national and global tragedy but, God willing, New Zealand will become a shining example of love, unity and acceptance for the rest of the world. I deliberately choose the word ‘acceptance’ instead of tolerance because tolerance means putting up with something you don’t really want to
whereas acceptance shows we open our hearts to you as you are, despite whatever differences we may have. We are all children of God and part of all humanity. We must accept each other as such. We were first as a nation to give the vote to women, the first to adopt anti-nuclear legislation and in the same tradition, we will be the leaders in showing the way in defeating Islamophobic terrorism. Let us rise from this tragedy to make this a better world. Let us work together to show how love truly overcomes hate. Let us in New Zealand, people of all religions, races and ethnicities in our true Kiwi spirit, really show the world the way forward. We cannot only heal but grow together for a better nation, a better tomorrow.
Let us truly live the message enshrined in our national anthem: “God of nations at thy feet In the bonds of love we meet. Hear our voices we entreat, God defend our free land... “From dissension, envy, hate. And corruption guard our state, Make our country good and great, God defend New Zealand... “Preaching Love and Truth to man Working out Thy glorious plan God defend New Zealand.” We are truly one. Kia Kaha.
Dear residents of east Auckland, the Trustees and committee members of the Pakuranga Islamic Centre on 5B Cortina Place, Pakuranga, would like to thank you for your outpouring of support, well-wishes, thoughts and prayers. We are overwhelmed with flowers and cards left at our Masjid since this terrorist attack in Christchurch on innocent men, women and children. Your support reminds us that New Zealanders are generally good people, just like the majority of Muslims are. It’s just the few people on both extreme ends of the spectrum who paint the whole reli-
gion, culture and country with the same brush. It’s time to unite, to get to know our differences and come together as one. As it says in the Holy Quran, human beings started from one mother and father. ‘Oh mankind indeed we have created you male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. ‘Indeed the most noble of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you,’ it says. It also says in the Holy Quran, whoever kills an innocent person, it is as if he has killed all of humanity.
Everyone from the community is welcome at the mosque anytime to see what we do and ask questions, share your thoughts and condolences. Jazakallah (May God reward you [with] goodness). Abubakar Nazif

Celebrating cultural diversity Somerville Intermediate School has planned a Mufti Day today (March 21) in wake of the Christchurch tragedy and has invited children to celebrate their cultural heritage by wearing something to reflect it. The funds raised from the day will be donated to those most affected by the attack. Students of Somerville have been suggesting ideas of how they would like to support the victims in Christchurch and plan to put up a performance of dance and music on Monday lunchtime from 12.351.15pm. Entry is by donation.
Peace and yoga a tribute to victims Two local yoga teachers are hosting a benefit yoga class and will give all donations made to the families who lost loved ones in the Christchurch terror attacks. Juliet Slogrove and Julie O’Meagher say the theme of the class is peace. The class will be one of two held at Macleans Park, Eastern Beach on Sunday March 24 at 9am. The class itself is free, but they will be taking donations which will be given to the Christchurch Givealittle fund. “Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work, but to be among these things and to be calm in your own heart,” Juliet says. Bring your own mats as there will only be a few spare. Suitable for all levels. The classes will be cancelled only if it is raining – text Juliet on 021465941 for rain check information.
oncerned residents have launched a petition asking for action to be taken to reduce anti-social activity and violence at an east Auckland park. The Northpark residents presented the petition to the Howick Local Board on Monday night. The petition calls for lights and a security camera to be installed at Tarnica Park in an effort to make it safer for people to use. The ongoing problems at the public greenspace include a range of anti-social activity by young people who gather at the park from Thursday through to Sunday nights. Some of them consume alcohol, get into fights, vandalise the playground equipment and verbally abuse and threaten members of the public, the residents
say. The Northpark residents are supported by Botany MP JamiLee Ross. Mr Ross told the board he shares the residents’ frustrations around negative behaviour at the park. “The biggest catalyst for the residents wanting to take action was when a weapon was presented and used at one particular incident,” Ross says. One of the Northpark residents who presented the petition, Gordon Luke, says they’ve had people set fire to the playground and paint abusive graffiti everywhere. Another resident, David Jamieson, says people can’t play football or cricket at the park because of the mess left behind. “The park is unsafe to use. I’m forever cleaning up broken bottles.”

Howick Local Board chairman David Collings said work was already under way by the board’s staff to investigate the
problems at Tarnica Park. He also suggested sprinklers as a possible deterrent for vandals.
Fatal Golflands crash: Police name driver The driver involved in a fourcar-crash that killed a 50-yearold man in east Auckland has been named. Adam Michael Speir, 27, of Pakuranga, is alleged to have driven into a queue of cars while they waited at the traffic lights on Botany Road
on January 28. He allegedly hit the back of a car driven by father-oftwo Zhengwen Alan Hu, who later died of the injuries he sustained in the crash. Media have said Speir pleaded not guilty to manslaughter at the High
Court in Auckland yesterday (Wednesday), where his name suppression lapsed. He is due to face a threeweek trial in April next year, media reported. The High Court at Auckland told the Times Speir will next appear in court in May for a case review.

Easter art: more artists wanted

ast Auckland artists have been creating Easter Art for the past 13 years as part of Stations of the Cross. Exhibition organisers from Cession Community Trust are on the hunt for fresh perspectives and new artists in 2019. Stations of the Cross Easter Art Exhibition first ran over Easter 2007 at the Depot in Lloyd Elmore Park. Brett Jones, local pastor and chair of Cession Community trust recalls; “Stations grew from some pretty humble beginnings. A group of creatives who could see the possibilities for art engaging the universal human themes of Easter launched the first Stations experience. We wanted to create a journey through art that followed the Jesus’ walk to the Cross. It turned out to be something artists and art lovers really connected with.” Over the years, Creative Communities, Lotteries Community and Howick Local Board have thrown their support in behind the event. The exhibition now takes place within a themed set that allows attenders to join artists on a journey through the art, across a range of media. Along the way, new artists have joined in. Howick resident, Angela Sellers first exhibited several years ago when the themed exhibition space was created as a classic Kiwi bach - ‘The Bach’.

“A colleague at the time asked if she could use some of my ‘Kiwiana style’ art work to display in an Easter art installation. My first glimpse of Stations was during set up when I dropped several pieces of work off at the venue. I later came back to see the end result and was really intrigued. Being new to faith and having just started my journey, that first experience with Stations of the Cross was a powerful one and led me to being involved in production the following year.” Mrs Sellers subsequently joined the Stations Production Team, in various roles. “Each year my involvement gives me a new creative outlet, whether it be through exhibit-
ing or through set design. My artwork has grown and evolved as my journey takes shape and I have had opportunities to work alongside other creative and likeminded people which I value hugely. Stations is a project I look forward to being a part of every year. “ Ruth Hammond, another long-time Howick resident, got involved in 2018 when a family friend was taken with some art she had produced, having recently returned to painting after a long break. Her black and white liquid charcoal rendition of a rose was striking and attracted significant interest. “It was amazing to be asked to exhibit and have the opportunity to have my work reflected upon in such a context. A black and white rose was an opportunity for people to see that new beginnings can come out of the tough things that happen in life. God, through nature, is doing that all the time.” Mrs Hammond is exhibiting again in 2019 as she takes up the challenge of this years themed exhibition space in an urban street setting. Artists can express interest in exhibiting in 2019 through email trust@cession.org.nz. A full artist’s brief will be provided on request. The Exhibition takes place across the Easter weekend April 19-21.

They’re about to start construction. You’ll need a PLAN to avoid disruption.
Josh, Local Student
AMETI Eastern Busway Stage 1 Construction starts April 2019 Areas affected will be; Panmure Roundabout, Lagoon Drive and the Panmure end of Pakuranga Road.
Public Transport, Walking & Cycling: From 15 April, more bus services are
being arranged to give better travel options during construction. This includes the 728 and 729 express bus services via Lloyd Elsmore Park from Howick to Panmure Station. Starting in May there will also be a new Park and Ride service available from Lloyd Elsmore Park to connect with these services.
The 728 and 729 services are FREE between 15 April and 6 May!
Lessen Car Use: Whether it’s carpooling with
friends, shopping local or taking the walking school bus, you can save on fuel, and you can get to know your community better. Try the AT Smart Travel carpooling app from
Alternate Travel Route: If you’re traveling into town, take Waipuna Bridge or Highbrook Drive, to avoid the traffic in the construction zone. Check out Google maps to find alternative options. New work schedule: This may not be an
option for you, but many organisations are encouraging ‘flexi-time’ with their staff. By commuting outside of peak hour traffic, you can avoid the congestion and arrive fresh to start your day.

Tomorrow’s Schools plans attract flak S
everal local schools have strongly opposed the Government’s proposed changes to the education system. Pigeon Mountain Primary is among the many local schools, including Owairoa Primary, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and Macleans College, standing against the proposal. Pigeon Mountain principal Ian Dickinson will be joining teachers, boards of trustee members and the school and wider community at a meeting tonight aimed at raising awareness of the proposal, which, if accepted, will be “catastrophic” for the New Zealand education system. Under the proposal, led by former Pakuranga College principal Bali Haque, boards of trustees will lose autonomy and influence over their local schools, he said. Instead, another layer of bureaucracy, known as an Educational Hub, will be created by the Ministry of Education to make all major decisions relating to the schools in its catchment. “It means a team of bureaucrats will be given significant power to make all decisions around the education of our children without any meaningful oversight by the community,” said Mr Dickinson. The reforms propose to set up 20 ‘Education Hubs’ across New Zealand, each responsible for the governance of 125 schools
in their area. The hubs will take over the bulk of the responsibilities of Boards of Trustees. The aim is to improve equity between low and high decile schools and to help poorly-performing schools struggling with governance. Mr Dickinson says key problems with the proposal are: ■■ It removes the democratically-elected board of trustees and replaces it with bureaucrats. ■■ Loss of funding. School donations may be capped and international student numbers may be limited. This will mean highdecile schools will struggle to provide good quality facilities and teaching ■■ It does not address the chronic shortage of teachers due to inadequate pay. In fact, the Education Hubs will take teachers away from schools, as they need to be staffed by “education professionals” ■■ Tightly enforcing school zones will stop parents being able to choose what school is right for their children. Mr Dickinson says he and other local principals have not been meaningfully consulted. “A small minority of schools are struggling with governance. We believe schools should be given the choice about whether or not to opt into services from an Education Hub. The majority of schools are performing
extremely well and do not need or want this additional administrative and financial burden. Alan McIntyre, principal, Owairoa Primary School says, “In our last two Education Review Office Review reports, they described Owairoa Primary School as a ‘top performing school’. They commented in the report about the stability of the staff and in particular the stability of the long serving senior management. “They also commended the Board of Trustees on their proactive, experienced and supportive governance of the school. They noted how the trustees brought a varied community and business expertise to the governance role. “Why would you put all of this at risk by usurping the powers of the Board of Trustees, replacing the Principal every five years, moving experienced staff out of our school to prop up other schools, and creating another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy that is neither wanted nor warranted?” he asked. “To interfere with our ability to attract International Students to our school and hence the income generated from them, we would lose at least 14 staff members from our school. ■■ Tomorrow’s Schools event at 7pm, Thursday March 21, Macleans College auditorium.

Feedback No violence for kids
I feel compelled to air my concerns about violence that children are exposed to. This has come to my attention with the recent tragic events in Christchurch, although it has been on my heart for a very long time. Parents, please ask yourselves this question: Do you allow your children to watch violent movies and play computer games? If the answer is yes, then why? Yes, we are all busy as parents and it’s blissful when our kids are “entertained”, but at what cost? The movies or computer games that kids are exposed to repeatedly surely becomes part of their thinking. If they are watching or playing games that involve violence or killing, this must become “normal” in their existence. “Oh but it’s harmless!” most parents say. I disagree. Maybe that’s what mosque killer Brenton Tarrant’s parents thought while he was growing up. In a news article, his 81-yearold grandmother Marie Fitzgerald was quoted saying: “He spent most of his time on computer games during high school days rather than chasing girls.” As if chasing girls would have been worse than computer games. Instead, he was “innocently” filling his mind with killing, shooting and whatever else was brainwashing him through repeated visual violence. Some people reading this might say I’m overreacting. Don’t

Gatland stars blast Irish I
n completing a record third Six Nations Grand Slam as Wales rugby coach with an overwhelming 25-7 victory against defending champions Ireland in Cardiff on Sunday, Warren Gatland’s contribution will live long in the hearts of Welsh fans. His record for Wales far exceeds that of predecessors Graham Henry and Steve Hansen and his record with the British and Irish Lions, with wins over Australia and a drawn series against New Zealand, adds to his mana. The win carries Wales one rung up the world ladder past Ireland to second behind the All Blacks who they haven’t beaten since 1953 against Bob Stuart’s men. It was during that tour at an Edinburgh rugby function that captain Stuart earned warm applause when he took the stage and claimed Scottish heritage. However the
claim also made by several other All Blacks speakers who followed wore thin with an audience who sought relief when halfback Keith Davis, a Maori, took the stage. “You won’t believe this but I also have Scottish heritage,” Davis told them amidst audible groans. “It’s true.My great grandfather ate a Scotsman.” Scotland have never beaten the All Blacks. Neither had Ireland until they did so in 2016 in Chicago, then backed it up with a cherished home win late last year after the tourists just scraped home against England at Twickenham. With Gatland’s Wales having trounced England and Ireland during their unbeaten Six Nations run, a new front runner has emerged for World Cup honours in Japan this year. Or has it? For my money any one of several teams - New Zealand, Wales,
Wales rugby coach Warren Gatland. Photo supplied
Ireland, England, South Africa and even Australia - can beat the other on their day provided their forwards set the platform. All Black forward dominance has been challenged by other packs and the rush defence has blunted the brilliance of the backs to a considerable degree with more emphasis placed on a smart kicking game.
Agnew’s Angle
While Eddie Jones wasn’t happy with England’s third place in the Six Nations, it was a big improvement on their dismal fifth of the previous year and they did produce some brilliant backline play against weaker opponents Italy and Scotland. However he had cause to bemoan a England defence that squandered a 31-0 lead in the final game 38-all draw against a brave, rejuvenated Scotland. Meanwhile with the Crusaders the only unbeaten New Zealand team in the Super Rugby championship, All Black berths are not a foregone conclusion. That is particularly true on the flanks where Ardie Savea, Matt Todd and Dalton Papalii look to be the main challengers for the injured Sam Cane’s No 7 jersey while Shannon Frizell, Vaea Fifita and Liam Squire battle for the No 6 berth.
Another No 6 possibility is versatile Scott Barrett whose game continues to develop. Ranked the third best lock behind Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock, his high eneregy game appeals. Barring injury, captain Kieran Read will be the No 8 and Akira Ioane could be his understudy should he continue to lift his work rate. Not surprisingly after undergoing back surgery, the admirable Read looked jaded at the end of last season, as did the over-burdened Sam Whitelock. With Crusader hooker Codie Taylor continuing his outstanding form of last year, it is pleasing to also see Dane Coles return to his best for the Hurricanes. ■ Ivan Agnew is a an awardwinning sports writer and author

A spirited athletics day By BETHANY BRITTEN and ALESHA KANT Elim Christian College recently held their Year 11-13 Athletics Day at Lloyd Elsmore Park, after it being postponed the previous Friday due to bad weather. Students came dressed in colourful and creative costumes displaying house spirit, and participated throughout the day in a variety of track and field events. This year, the Interact Club’s annual bake sale at Athletics Day raised money for Child Rescue, which is an organisation that combats child trafficking and sexual exploitation on an international scale. So far this year, Elim College raised more than $800 for Child Rescue, which is over half of the cost required for saving and restoring one child.
There were three athletics records broken, two of which had stood since 2013. House points were awarded for accomplishments and participation, the day ending with Ezekiel house winning, with Jeremiah house close behind. The senior students enjoyed an active, competitive, and fun day of athletics!

ll four matches in Premier Men Division One were one innings affairs due to the first day’s play being lost to rain. Three of the four matches were drawn including Howick’s match against Takapuna, and at the end of the round The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men are 17 points clear of second placed Suburbs New Lynn and are in with an excellent chance of clinching the prized Hedley Howarth Trophy in the last match of the season. In Saturday’s match Howick Pakuranga won the toss and invited Takapuna to bat. Taine Jolley made an immediate breakthrough with his second ball but Max O’Dowd and Guy Harley took advantage of the benign Lloyd Elsmore wicket and took the score through to 147 before Harley was dismissed for 56. O’Dowd continued to take to the Howick bowling attack and was the last wicket to fall when Takapuna had used up its allocated 48 overs. O’Dowd scored 146 off 148 balls and was supported by the middle order as Takapuna ran up an imposing 266/4.
Howick Skipper Bill Walsh all defence on his way to scoring 120.
Taine Jolley took 3/54 to top the bowling whilst Donovan Grobbelaar and Adam Jones both kept the batsmen in check conceding less than 4 runs an over. It was an innings of missed opportunities for Howick with several catches dropped at vital times. Howick set about scoring the runs in its customary fashion with Walsh and Dan Young taking the shine off the new ball and
setting a platform for the big hitters to take the game forward. Young went with the score at 31 when he was on 20 and Andrew Morrison worked well with Walsh to accelerate the scoring rate until he was out with the total at 81. Brian Barnard joined Walsh, who was still out in the middle and scored 30 off 26 balls including two big sixes. ➤ Turn to Page 19
