Tai found guilty of Pakuranga murder By KELLY TEED

uriarangi Tai has been found guilty of the murder of 22-yearold Chozyn Koroheke by a jury. Ms Koroheke died from her injuries after being shot once in the abdomen with a 12-gauge double barrelled shotgun at an address on Pakuranga Rd last year. Tai, 23, appeared in the High

of helping Tai evade capture after Ms Koroheke’s death. The jury found her not guilty. In his summing up, Justice Matthew Muir instructed the jury to detach themselves from any emotions as they decided a verdict. “A young woman has tragically and prematurely died as a result of a shotgun wound. I’m sure you found aspects of the 111 call … just as har-

rowing as I did. But the sympathy you undoubtedly feel for Chozyn must not have any place in your deliberations,” he said. During the trial, Crown prosecutor Mark Williams told the jury the relationship between Tai and the victim was one characterised by violence and abuse at the hands of Tai. ➤ Turn to Page 12

More than 230 Bucklands Beach Intermediate School students have each spent part of a week camping in the South Waikato and doing everything from raft-building to climbing. Some 117 students stayed at MiCamp Whakamaru – 30km south-east of Tokoroa – and departed early morning Sunday March 11 and returned early evening Wednesday March 14. Around 120 of their school mates departed early morning Wednesday March 14 and returned early evening on Saturday March 17. For more than 30 years, BBI has attended Motutapu Outdoor Education Camp but it is out of action due to damage sustained last year. The school’s Debbie Allan said: “Teachers gave up a day in their weekend to ensure their Year 7 students experienced the opportunity to develop key life skills by spending a few days away from home and to strengthen their relationships with each other and their teachers. “A highlight was providing every student with the opportunity to sleep in a tent for one night and to cook damper (a bread baked on a campfire).

ore than 1000 cowboys, cowgirls and Indians cut a striking picture at Owairoa Primary this week. Students, staff and parents gathered on the school field on Monday for a picnic followed by a grand parade and concert as part of the school’s Wild Wild West themed Book Week. Sheriff Alan McIntyre had to lay low as a wanted poster of him around the school was offering a big reward for his capture. He stated from in hiding: “The Wild Wild West Book Week has been a fun way to get students reading and to get books into homes. Learning is all about memories and this week will stay with many students, and staff, for a long time.” The Grand Parade got off to a great start with the singing cowboy Jock Hume; followed by ex-student Nich-

olas Cornea singing ‘Ring of Fire’; and award-winning singer / Owairoa school teacher Alice Fraser. The school also performed a combined line dance to the tune of ‘Achy Breaky Heart’. The week was filled with different activities that ranged from viewing farm animals on the field, to panning for gold, western nerf gun challenge, target shooting, creating harmonicas, ring tossing, constructing Indian headdresses, wild west riding school, horse shoe throw, western singing and the wild west technology challenge. The accompanying book fair with a display of the latest book titles had many students buy books for their home collection. The week concluded with students going to the movies for a taste of western drama and a bag of popcorn each.

The couple say Sheeran was exactly as they had hoped he would be. “He gave us lots of hugs and he was really kind and easy to talk to,” Asher says. Not knowing if Sheeran had been briefed on their back story, Asher says she slipped it into conversation as the meet-and-greet was coming to an end. “He didn’t need to say anything, I knew he understood,” Peter says.

AT asked to remove bus stop Howick Local Board members are calling for Auckland Transport (AT) to get rid of one of their new bus stops. At this month’s board meeting, Howick Local Board member Adele White highlighted her intent to move a motion to have AT remove the

bus stop at 43 Cook Street. Late last year the Howick Local Board expressed their opposition towards the proposed bus stop location, fearing it would increase risk to the safety of pedestrians and motorists. After feedback from the

board, AT said the installation of the bus stop would be suspended until the site had been reviewed and further consultation had taken place. However, the bus stop was installed despite AT saying that they would report back to the local board before going ahead.

wo deserving Howick College students have been left star struck after meeting Ed Sheeran over the weekend. Sixteen-year-old Peter Garofalakis and Asher Hall say winning a radio competition to meet their long time idol was a dream come true. In September last year Peter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and has spent the past few months undergoing intensive cancer treatment. “It’s been really tough over the last few months and I haven’t been able to go to school, or play sports, so music has been a huge

part of keeping me going,” he says. Peter says he has spent hours listening to Ed Sheeran songs during his treatment. “His music has always lifted my spirits and helped Asher and I get through some really tough days,” he says. Peter’s girlfriend, Asher, entered him in the competition saying, “The chance for Peter to meet someone he looks up to would be of great encouragement particularly in times to come as this journey of his is a long one.” Asher says there was nobody more deserving of the meet and greet than Peter. “Over the past few

HPCC win championship Howick Pakuranga are the champions of Auckland after claiming the Hedley Howarth two-day championship with a draw against East Coast Bays at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday. The HPCC premiers last won the cup 25 years ago. In one of only two games that got on the field, East Coast Bays resumed day two with Michael Ross (31*) and the in-form Seb Langridge (9*) at the crease with their side on 51/2. However, with the University/ Papatoetoe fixture unable to get on the field, it soon became apparent that a draw was going to be enough for Howick to claim the title. Skipper Bill Walsh celebrated the season with a couple of wickets while Seb Langridge (40*) finished his 2017/18 off with another solid knock. With ECB on 147/7 and rain about ECB Captain Seb Langridge audibly congratulated the Howick side as the two teams walked off the field for the final time this season. Howick Pakuranga had claimed the Hedley Howarth championship with an unbeaten season, including coming back from a first innings deficit against ECB earlier in the year. It was the club’s first title in 26 years and their third ever Hedley Howarth championship. Earlier on day one, Chris Groenink did the early damage for ECB with a couple of top order wickets. However, it was that man Donovan Grobbelaar who brought

his side back into the contest, using all his experience in his runa-ball 85. Grobbelaar hit 11 fours and three sixes in his knock, batting through the middle of the day with opener Bill Walsh (65). Howick suffered another mini collapse around the 50 over mark, losing a couple of quick wickets. It was the lower order who rallied for the home side, Adam Jones (45) holding things together at number 10 to ensure Howick Pakuranga passed the 300 mark. Groenink finished with 4-55 from 23 overs while Michael Ross was the surprise package with 3-26. But this was Howick Pakuranga’s game to celebrate after a long time between titles, something Coach Ben Williams can be immensely proud of also in his debut season with the club. HPCC’s Jim Allnatt said: “It’s been quarter of a century since we last won the Hedley Howarth Cup. That’s a long time between drinks. “With five matches to go we were lying in sixth place but we knew that if we could win each match on the first innings we would be there or thereabouts and that’s what happened. “When you’ve got Rudi Botadra and Adam Jones batting 9 and 10 you know you got the strongest batting lineup in Club cricket and the boys bowled sides out as well with Adam, Rudi and Dale Phillips more than holding their own.” ■■ Howick Pakuranga 301 (B Walsh 65, D Grobbelaar 85, C Neale 31, R Botadra 31*, A Jones 45; C Groenink 4-55, M Ross 3-26) draw with East Coast Bays 147/7 (M Ross 31, S Langridge 40*, C Briggs 37)

Bears and prayers in solidarity By Therese Henkin

A

s hundreds of thousands of American students readied themselves to take to the streets to protest gun violence last week, Sancta Maria College stood in solidarity. Almost every student armed themselves with teddy bears and gathered together to pray and sing in support of those taking part in the March for Our Lives rally to end gun violence. Sparked by the Florida school shooting earlier this year, the March for Our Lives movement saw people from all over the United States and the world march the streets on Saturday March 24, demanding stricter US gun control laws. Stuart Gibbs, head of Sancta Maria College’s music department, says their Bears and Prayers session was a way of showing support. “We want them to know we stand beside them in wanting a more peaceful world,” he says “We believe in loving each other and not living in fear and the gun culture is entirely based on fear -we don’t subscribe to that.” Gibbs says the idea first came about on the day US president Donald Trump said all American teachers should be armed with guns in the classroom.

Sancta Maria College held a ‘Bears and Prayers’ event last week to show their support for those fighting for stricter gun laws in America. Photo Therese Henkin

“I mentioned we should send a photo of our students with teddy bears because these are the most dangerous things we are prepared to hold in the classroom,” Gibbs says. “Then Joanne [teacher] said, ‘Instead of the right to bear arms it should be the right to have arms full of bears’. “And the idea snowballed and within a matter of weeks we had the whole school on board.” Gibbs says the event was planned to fall the day before the worldwide rally. “We want [our students] to be aware of what’s going on in the

world and to understand how we are lucky to live in a country where we don’t have gun issues, and they don’t have to go to school fearing for their lives,” Gibbs says. Now Gibbs says the focus is on getting photos of the event to students in America. He says many of his students have already taken to twitter and Facebook to make contact with American students affected by gun violence in schools. “What we are seeing now is that when they galvanise themselves, young people can achieve something amazing.” Gibbs says.

around the firebox which allows the air to flow. As the air passes the firebox, it is heated. This action is known as convection. Convection fires provide a more even heat to the room. The air is warmed from the ceiling down. It operates in a cycle where it heats the air surrounding the ceiling area first and then pushing the warm air down. The convection fire is more suitable for a room or house with a standard ceiling height and where more even heat distribution is desired. Radiant fires heat quickly and if you sit close to them, you can get warm even if the whole room has not had time to warm up. A radiant fire transfers about two thirds of its heat by radiation and one third by convection. A radiant fire is more suitable for rooms with high ceilings.

The two types of fireboxes to choose from are cast iron and steel. Cast iron fireboxes generally take a little longer to heat up but also longer to cool once the fire has burned down. They offer superior durability and all Masport cast iron fireboxes come with a 10 year warranty. Steel fireboxes operate the opposite way and heat up quicker but also cool quicker. If you plan to use your wood fire just a few times a week, a steel box would most likely be the better choice for you. “In the winter month wood fres are a big part of our business. Get a Taste of Uxbridge

Bucklands Beach Intermediate students got hands-on recently creating their own versions of an exhibit at Uxbridge Arts & Culture. Scott Eady’s exhibition 1 and ALL will be on display at Uxbridge Arts & Culture will be on display during the Taste of Uxbridge week, including some of BBI’s student recreations. The Eady exhibition Bucklands Beach Intermediate Students brings together four hard at work making their own versions different projects Photo supplied of Ian’s House. that were initiated by the artists personal connections to the Howick area. Each project incorporates a collaborative aspect that brought the community into the gallery space and offered something to the exhibition. BBI students worked on the ‘Ian’s House’ project. Eady said the project was inspired by a builder and family friend as a child. “I remember Ian working on alterations to my parent’s house in east Auckland. He would give my potato fritters at lunch time. In my twenties I worked with him on a couple of building projects. “Ian had no interest in travelling the world. He told me the internet, books and travel documentaries provided him with all the world experience he needed,” he said. “Ian had a wonderful sense of humour and a loud laugh. He devised a playful trap that took the form of a miniature house. If you open the front door the structure will unexpectedly explode. The door is cunningly linked to a mousetrap. By touching the artwork you potentially destroy it. Of course, the structure can be re-built many times.” Students at BBI worked over their lunchtimes to create their own versions of Ian’s House which will be on display alongside Eady’s exhibition until 14 April.

By Kelly Teed Music, crafts and magic – it’s all happening at Uxbridge Arts & Culture next week as part of the Taste of Uxbridge next week. From April 3-13, Uxbridge will open its doors for open studios, free workshops, artist talks and theatre events and there’s sure to be something to appeal to all ages. Up first is a unique classical showcase evening, providing a platform for our local classical musicians to share their talents on stage. Expect a great evening of classical music from Bach to Chopin. Following that, singer-songwriter Caitlin Smith is back with her own band and sound performing a programme of originals, a selection of songs from her ‘spiritual parents’ Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and some beautiful original tunes that will leave you wanting more. The artistically inclined may fancy the Pop Up Painting evening at Basalt – a couple of wines combined with your very own piece of art to take home at the end of the night – what could possibly go wrong? If you’d rather admire somoene else’s art work than create your own, head down to check out the Gallery Sessions – a lively discussion led by Malcolm Smith Gallery’s manager curator Zoe Hoeberigs around the exhibtions. For some inner zen, check out the yoga or if you’re looking to be inspired, sit on the short talk from two local creatives for some bright ideas. To finish the week off on Friday morning, join Zoe for a discussion and tour of Scott Eady’s exhibition 1 and ALL. Meanwhile, the young – and the young at heart – can head down to watch Mr Bubbles and his magical show of bouncy bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, smoky bubbles, square bubbles, giant bubbles and even fire bubbles – it’s all the bubbles you can dream of and more! Finally in the event programme,

is bubbly songstress Lisa Lorrell to take you on a musical journey filled with nostalgia, fun and laughter, performing classic songs from best loved musicals and operetta, to jazz, country and pop music. The Fencibles settle in Howick

Business students head to Singapore

T

he 2nd ship to arrive carrying Fencibles was The Sir Robert Sale, on 11th October 1847 which left Cork in Ireland on 4th July escaping the Great Irish potato Famine, and many of those on board had Typhus Fever, and were malnourished. Fortunately all passengers were vaccinated for smallpox. They had to wait six weeks before being carried to Howick Beach on 22nd November. Fr Garin had two schools, a boy’s school under Sgt Evers and girl’s school under Mary Finlay, daughter of a Fencible, which started in about July 1848. Children paid 6d pence a week for school lessons. The acre allotments were allocated within a few days as Fencibles were eager to get started. Twenty Maori were paid to build raupo whares for Fencibles on their allotments, which all leaked in the next very wet winter. If it looked like rain you wear your raincoat to bed. If you light a candle at night stink

St Kentigern student Jayden Lal is one of 10 students selected from around the country to take part in a business challenge field trip to Singapore next month. The tour, a joint effort from the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence, Young Enterprise and the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Singapore, aims to expose young Kiwis to the opportunities awaiting them outside of school and in the hub of businesses in Asia. Students will learn about the culture and business community in Singapore, including site visits to established companies and start ups. They will meet local entrepreneurs, as well as those involved in some of our trade relationships. Students will also work with local Singaporean students on a business challenge. “This Singapore trip is going to be a memorable experience and I can’t wait to meet new people in a new country, make friends with new experiences,” says Lal. “Words can’t really express how happy and excited I was when I found out I had been chosen and I can’t wait!”

beetles drop out onto your bed, fleas soon took over and rats were a plague. Maori brought and sold firewood from Waiheke. Ten Maori Armed Police Force for 210 men patrolled Howick arresting any drunks to be fined in the Howick Court. The hard clay soils were hard to dig, and wet clay roads were impassable and there was no work on local farms. 220 were on Government road building in 1848 at 1/6 a day. Labourers in Auckland were paid 5/- a day. By December 1848 there were 50 wooden cottages built [with help of Maori] and most families were in the 180 raupo cottages which were snug. Some thought wooden cottages draughty and cold. The officers claimed “raupo cottages would give good accommodation for several years”. 63% of our Fencibles were Irish and were used to being discriminated against but they soon planted their crops and were grateful that life in Howick was far better than in

ANNIVERSARY

Ireland during the Potato Famine. Today the biggest collection of Fencible Cottages is in the Howick Historical Village with six Fencible Cottages. There is still one in Howick [34 Abercrombie Street], 2 at MOTAT and Onehunga, none in Panmure or Otahuhu. The last Fencible, Thomas Heath, died aged 82 in 1902, his daughter Miss Sarah Heath died in 1957 aged 91 years. I remember her well. Thomas served in the Royal Marines and was wounded in an attack on Syria, and was awarded a Syrian Silver medal and discharged after only 5 years of service. Thomas Heath came on the Sir George Seymour and arrived at Howick

on 16th December. It was Sarah Heath who told the story of the pirate ship from Africa that came close to the “Sir George Seymour” sailing to Auckland from London with 78 Fencible retired soldiers and their families. For three days the Fencibles stayed on deck while the women and children hid below decks. The pirate ship captain demanded “what did he have on board?” The “Sir George Seymour” captain replied “he had soldiers”. Finally the pirate ship left. The captain was very relieved. He had the pension money for over 700 Fencibles in cash and notes in wooden cases in the hold, a very large amount of money! Despite the dissatisfaction, disappointment, and discrimination the Fencibles and their families became industrious, thriving good citizens in one of the loveliest parts of New Zealand. Health, Beauty & Well-being As many as 2 out of 10 come down with the flu each year

S

ome 10 to 20 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from influenza every year. It is always serious, can result in hospitalisation and, in a few cases, is life threatening. In light of this, General Practitioners and medical centres are diligent in urging people of all ages but in particular the elderly, to take advantage of vaccination schemes. It is wise to remember that being fit

and healthy is no guarantee against influenza and also to be aware that it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to have full effect, stimulating the immune system to make antibodies which may protect against the influenza viruses. Because the virus keeps changing, a new vaccine is usually made each year to cover the changes and therefore an annual vaccination is recommended

especially for individuals who work in highly populated areas or who have close contact with high risk individuals such as hospital patients and rest home residents. Some people are entitled to a free vaccination and for those who think they may fall into that category then a visit to their general practitioner is advised. Protection remains optimal in elderly people for about six months and in healthy adults for up to a year. It should be understood that the influenza vaccine cannot cause influenza as it contains an inactivated virus, that is, the influenza vaccine is made from a small piece of protein from each of the three most com-

mon influenza viruses around each year. When a patient is vaccinated the immune system becomes activated, learning to recognise the viral protein. In those vaccinated who later inhale an influenza virus, the immune system will immediately recognise the viral protein then neutralise the virus to which it is attached before it can multiply and make one ill. Because the vaccine is made from only a small part of the influenza virus it cannot give the recipient the flu but it can give you a sore arm from location irritation. Typical symptoms of influenza (and there are different strains) are:

Fever and chills Cough Body aches and pains Fatigue Headache Influenza is much more serious than a common cold and can lead to complications such as pneumonia and heart failure. It can also make existing medical conditions worse. To help prevent the spread of these viruses, be sure to stay home when sick and use disposable paper tissues. Wash hands frequently especially after covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing. Don’t share cups and cutlery and try to keep hands away from the eyes, nose and mouth. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

arcourts Preet & Co, whose principal Preet Grewal 17 months ago was lauded as one of the youngest Harcourts business owners in the country, has gone into administration. Administrators Meltzer Mason confirmed to the Times that it was shortly to file an administrator’s report with the Companies Office. Preet & Co’s Botany offices were empty early this week although the Howick and Pakuranga offices are still in business. The Times understands a new owner is in the process of taking over the Botany office. Bronwyn Anchor, centre manager at Botany Town Centre, would only say that the business is changing hands which is being managed by the administrator. Harcourts Group head office had little to say too. “Harcourts is unable to comment as Preet & Co is in administration.” All questions were referred to the administrators Meltzer Mason. In October 2016, Harcourts said in a media release Preet & Co was Harcourts’ fastest growing franchise “At just 33 years old he is already one of the youngest Harcourts’ business owners in the country. Harcourts Preet & Co, which already owns the Manukau, Otahuhu, Botany and Ellerslie offices, took over the established Harcourts offices in Howick, Meadowlands and Pakuranga. Preet & Co purchased the offices from Harcourts Eastzone Realty, which was co-owned by real estate veteran David Clifton, who moved on after 17 years with Harcourts. “It’s been a whirlwind of success for Preet since founding

Preet & Co in April 2012,” the 2016 media release said. “By September 2014 Preet was ready to expand and he opened the Harcourts Otahuhu office. Two months later he launched Harcourts Botany. “Earlier this year (2016) he purchased the established Harcourts Ellerslie office, and just this month Harcourts Howick, Meadowlands and Pakuranga.” A media report in January this year said an investigation had been launched into

“abnormalities” in the trust account of Preet’s multi-agency group. About $1.7 million of trust account money is said to be involved, according to a person familiar with the situation, the NZ Herald reported. A Real Estate Agents Authority spokesperson told the Herald: “The REAA has completed its investigation into the abnormalities in the trust account of Preet & Co. The matter is now in the hands of the (Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal) tribunal.”

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown’s Members Bill to toughen up the penalty for suppliers of synthetic drugs has passed its first reading in Parliament. His Psychoactive Substances (Increasing Penalty for Supply and Distribution) Amendment Bill will increase the penalty for suppliers of synthetic drugs from a maximum of two years’ imprisonment to a maximum of eight years. “Psychoactive substances, like synthetic cannabis, have been wreaking havoc in communities across the country and it’s time we cracked down on those who peddle these dangerous drugs,” said Brown. The Bill, which went through last Wednesday, will amend the Psychoactive Substances Act to bring the penalty for those convicted of supplying illegal psychoactive substances into line with the penalty for those

Cinnamon Cafe adored by all By Therese henkin

A

small dream and one of New Zealand’s finest chefs is all it took to create Half Moon Bay’s greatest coffee shop. Cinnamon Cafe is in the heart of Half Moon Bay Marina – a quiet little spot for coffee lovers and foodies alike to enjoy a moment away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On a rainy Monday afternoon, one of the cafe’s quietest times, people are nestled into various corners, taking refuge from the unpredictable spring weather with a freshly brewed coffee. Passers-by doubled back to peek into the cafe as the smell of freshly baked goodies wafted out the door. A mouth watering selection of pastries, cakes, savouries and sweet treats are hard to resist. Even harder to resist is the promise of double shot Brazilian coffee for the price of a single. The kitchen is abuzz with activity with delicious meals made on site never in short supply. “I wanted to create a space where people could relax and feel at home,” owner Darko Jelavic says. A chef for more than 35 years, Darko is no stranger to the kitchen. He has worked in a number of well known restaurants from Euro Bar and Restaurant to his very own restaurant Gee-Gee’s in Epsom, so spectacular food is his specialty.

Left, Darko and the friendly team at Cinnamon Cafe; right, customers having a chat outside of the cafe.

His knowledge and his experience is his secret weapon, he says. “I know what tastes delicious and I know the importance of fresh food,” he says. “I want to encourage the whole community to pop down and have a taste of some of the things on our menu. “I can promise them they’ll be impressed and they’ll keep coming back.” And he might be right - each day more people visit the cafe, and he sees customers returning on the regular.

“My vision was to create a cafe that would instantly become a favourite, where the service, food and coffee were all outstanding and customers couldn’t help but gravitate back to us.” The cafe has a warm atmosphere, with dark wooden floors and sleek countertops. The chalk board menu is a reminder that Darko puts his own personal touch on every aspect of the cafe, from the lunch specials to the way to coffee is brewed to perfection. “I have a huge amount of pride in

my work and in what I do,” Darko says. “This is my legacy and I want it to be the best. I want people to love coming here.” He says over the next few months customers can expect a few changes – but only good ones. “We are going to put another sliding door in, and more seating with a bar leaner and stools for added comfort. “I want it to have a real homely feel about it, so that’s what I will continue to work on,” he says. “But don’t worry, our menu will

always be delicious.” One day he hopes to have a bigger focus on artisanal treats and desserts. “I’d always wanted it to be more focussed on desserts, but the kitchen here wasn’t big enough. But one day, who knows,” he says with a grin. Until then you can find Darko cooking up a storm at Ara-Tai Rd, Half Moon Bay. Cinnamon Cafe Ara-Tai Road, Half Moon Bay Phone 537 5525

hen a door closes on you, don’t take no for an answer, said Dr Michelle Dickinson, popularly known as Nanogirl. Passionate about introducing children to science and technology live on stage as well as on radio and television, the researcher and scientist shared her captivating story at a high tea fundraiser organised by Women in Rotary, at the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre, Lloyd Elsmore Park, at the weekend. “If you want to get something, don’t stop at the first closed door. Sneak around the back, that’s what I did,” she said about the time she didn’t get into a top university in the US. She refused to take no for an answer. Dickinson believes that it’s often adversity that teaches people about their greatest strengths. Shrugging off a long list of awards that include being awarded Member of NZ Order of Merit, winner of Women of Influence for Science and Innovation 2016, the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award 2016 and the Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication Prize, the unconventional scientist spoke of the school of hard knocks. “My parents were young when they met at a bar, and then they had me. We were poor and I didn’t have any books to read. My mother would often turn on the music and didn’t understand why I needed to study and get good grades as well as work and support my younger brother,” she said. Her interest in science was sparked as she watched her dad soldering circuits on the dining table. “We couldn’t afford a toaster. So the first time we got one home, I thought it was magical. “How could a machine pop up such beautifully browned toasts, I wondered!”

Nanogirl Michelle Dickinson is going all out to train the next generation of inventors. Times photo Christel Moore Before long her fascination turned to curiosity and she couldn’t stop herself from dismantling the toaster to find out what lies beneath. There was a definite pattern in there as she later broke laptops and cell phones to find out what made them work. This celebrity scientist, who rubs shoulders with the likes of Richard Branson, has intentionally chosen a pathway that bypasses the traditional closed door meetings that nerdy scientists have with government and policy makers. Instead, she reaches out directly to children and educators to inculcate a love of science out of the classroom. The founder-director of social enterprise Nanogirl Labs is also the author of No 8 Recharged. Her latest offering is a glossy hardcover of Kitchen Science cookbook for children with recipes they can experiment with their

mothers and grandmothers. Michelle admits that she has taken a huge personal financial risk for this publication. “I believe in taking risks about things I am passionate about,” said the girl who at the age of six wanted to fly and be a super woman. Now older and wiser she said: “Surround yourself with likeminded people and work on that inner voice which says ‘you are not good enough’. “Start the day saying you are awesome,” she enthused a day before she flew to Hong Kong to launch the Nanogirl Lab where she will trains teachers, children and educators with the idea of developing the next generation of inventors and innovators. This newly married, science superhero is keen to change the way the world thinks about science ...and is on a roll to set up Nanogirl Labs in five countries.

MP for Botany prepared to cut first. This tax is expensive and unnecessary. When we were in government we were able to live within our means while still investing in major projects such as the Waterview tunnel, Auckland rail electrification and the Western Ring Route. That was because we understood that to invest in quality projects we needed to apply discipline to our spending, target key areas that would provide the best value, and ensure sound management of the projects we invested in. With that type of discipline we were able to complete major projects in government and prepare for the next generation

of transport projects. Ambitious announcements for public transport such as AMETI, major routes like the East-West link and Mill Road were all possible because of the responsible management of finance. Our approach showed that it is possible to achieve major transport investment without the introduction of new taxes. Today, however, we are seeing a step back from many of these major projects in favour of pushing responsibility down the line from the current government. That’s disappointing because what we have demonstrated over the last nine years is that you don’t need to cancel road projects or introduce new taxes to invest in transport. What you need to responsible management and ambition. Jami-Lee Ross MP for Botany

T

he author of a recently released novel exploring the love between two males in the 1950s says in a way, he wrote the story he wanted to read as a gay young adult. Tane’s War, by Brendaniel Weir, is set in 1953, and follows the story of Briar – a dreamer living with his father in Pukekohe who sends him to a training farm to be “turned into a man”. But the plan backfires when his arrival awakens feelings in fellow shearer, Aussie. Weir, who was born and bred in Bucklands Beach, inadvertently came out to his parents during the New Zealand homosexual law reform campaign. After being quite active during the campaign in his final year of high school, he went to take part in a traffic march shortly before the final hearing of the bill in parliament. He recounts rushing to the march one Friday after school with his best friend, still in their Catholic school uniform, and being photographed by various media during the march. “That immediately got back to my parents – my mother of course was not terribly impressed – and shortly after I found myself homeless, but I can

Brendaniel Weir

appreciate how different it was for them back then, thinking homosexuality was a sickness.” The story began as a screenplay as part of Weir’s Masters of Creative Writing but sat unfinished for a while. “I never really brought it to a conclusion or explored it as deeply as I wanted to. It began with a character that was in place in my head by someone else I knew in real life,” said Weir. But the urge to explore it deeper never went away – Weir describes it as a voice that just wouldn’t leave him alone. “I had an unformed sketch of an idea of a person, of a man, just sat in my mind back in 2004, which sat there for seven or eight

years before I finally decided I should expand on this,” he said. “I did some research and the idea of the character stayed with me so I decided to explore this character as a fictional character [because] that voice from the past sort of haunted me.” “Almost any author will tell you [how] certain novels almost end up incorporating some autobiographical element – in a way, you can’t help it. You write what you know. “My very first boyfriend was a guy who was eight or nine years older than me who was also part Maori. For me, this was quite fascinating [as I was ] suddenly discovering all these things [and] that there was a gay community out there. Back in the 1980s, Bucklands Beach was a very mono-cultural place,” he said. Weir says he’s had a mostly positive reaction to the story – with offers from three publishers to take on the novel. “I’m constantly getting feedback from straight women and gay men – there seems to be a bit of a target market happening there on its own. “One of the first reviews that popped up on good reads was from a straight man – “I’ve never read a gay book before, but I’ve actually quite enjoyed it” – that made me laugh!”

Just believe? “H

ow do I find Neverland?” “Just believe.” This was the advice of JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan and Neverland, to the boy who inspired one of his most enduring characters. Just believe. It sounds easy and so desirable. Yet for some of us, and maybe at times for all of us, to just believe in the face of crisis, tragedy, doubt and distraction is one of the hardest things that can be asked of us. Take Thomas, one of Jesus’ followers. He wanted more than anything to believe what his friends told him at the first Easter. Jesus is alive. Just believe. The events of Good Friday were devastating for Thomas and his friends. It’s tragic to lose anyone close, but Jesus had captured their imaginations like no other. But Thomas’ journey was different. His friends’ mourning of Jesus’ death on a Roman cross

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, March 29, 2018 — 15

Working over Easter God is big enough to take all of our questions. Photo supplied

Only Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays. Easter Sunday is not a public holiday, but most businesses have to be closed.

Good Friday lasted only three days until they saw Jesus again. Another whole week goes by, before Thomas sees Jesus. Not only has he lost Jesus, but his friends seem to be losing their grip on reality as well. They think they’ve seen Jesus alive. “Doubting Thomas”, history has unfairly labelled him. So often, doubt is painted negatively. But some would say, if it’s a choice between indifference and doubt, give us doubt every time. Indifference leaves us standing in place. Questions though lead to answers, and if answers result, then doubt has done good work. Often our doubts are rooted in the kinds of experiences that need good answers before we can put our trust in God. The untimely death of a loved one. Illness. Financial ruin. Nagging questions about the nature of God. It’s very rare that the questions that emerge from these times are answered with a pas-

sionless indifference. We want to know, we need to know. And God is big enough to take our questions. So Thomas is a hero for those who ask questions and wrestle with their doubts. But when faced with the risen Jesus, his doubts fall away and he believes. Thomas doesn’t hold onto his doubts, he lets them go in an instant and makes the deductive leap. This is the greatest comeback in history; people don’t rise from the dead every day, Jesus must be God. The importance of this recognition of Jesus by a man like Thomas cannot be underestimated. He was never going to be a soft touch, fooled by a first century Jesus impersonator. And while he may not have touched the wounds of Jesus, it’s clear to him on sight; you don’t get scars like that from a paper cut. This is Jesus. However, the clearest evidence of Thomas finally “just

believing” comes from what follows. His life is spent in telling others about Jesus who proved he was God by being raised from the dead. He may even have taken his eye-witness account of the resurrected Jesus as far as India where he is said to have been martyred on the end of an executioner’s spear. His doubts would have kept him out of harm’s way. But Thomas was no longer defined by his doubts. He was defined by what he believed. He’s not alone in this either. Most of Jesus’ followers were killed for just believing. What a strange psychosis these men shared; their belief in Jesus’ resurrection leading them one by one to their deaths. But faced with the reality of Jesus raised from the dead, they couldn’t help themselves. They just believed. Brett Jones – Pastor to cession|community|church for the East Auckland Ministers’ Association

Most businesses legally have to be closed on Good Friday. If your employer is trading and you choose to work (and you usually would have worked that Friday), you’ll: ■■ be paid at least time and a half (1.5 times what you’d usually make for that day’s work), and ■■ get a paid day off to take later — called a day in lieu — even if you’ve only worked part of a shift.

Days in lieu (alternative holidays)

If you work on Good Friday but you don’t usually work Fridays, you’ll be paid time and a half — you won’t get a paid day off to take later.

Easter Sunday

If your employer is trading and you go to work, you’ll be paid your usual rate (no time a half and no paid day off later). If you usually work Sundays but your employer is closed, you won’t get a paid day off unless your employer offers one in your employment agreement.

Annual ‘Stations of the Cross’ exhibition - a seat at the table C

reative people from around the Howick area are using their talents to run the Easter Art exhibition which offers a unique Easter art event for those staying in town over Easter weekend. The 12th annual Stations of the Cross Easter Art Exhibition “Staged” will be held at the Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park across the Easter weekend from 1pm on Good Friday until 2pm on Easter Sunday April 1. The event is being run by cession|community trust. Preparations have been underway for the past nine months as artists have worked together on developing the theme for the exhibition and the gallery design. The exhibition is displayed within a thematically-driven “theatrical” style set designed by the Stations project team and intended to add colour and ambience to attendees’ journey through the Easter art. “This year’s exhibition “A Seat at the Table” will offer a range of artistic pieces from the more traditional art forms to the off-the-wall and creative. “We’re expecting painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media artists, poets, film makers – all reflecting on the universal themes of the Easter story – betrayal, shame, guilt, injustice and perhaps most importantly, hope,” explains exhibition curator Brett Jones. “Our unique gallery design this

Chocolate-themed activities E

aster and chocolate — now that’s a match made in heaven! If you’re a fan of the sweet stuff, these festive ideas for the holiday weekend should be right up your alley. Enjoy!

Treat your taste buds

Ready to indulge? In addition to the quintessential Easter egg hunt, you could plan a chocolate tasting activity during which blindfolded participants are asked to identify different varieties of chocolate. If your family enjoys spending

time in the kitchen, you could also celebrate with a chocolate-making workshop. Or why not hop in the car for a tour of your local chocolate shops? Finally, chocolate fondue never fails to satisfy the sweet tooth of chocoholics young and old.

Time to relax

Need to unwind? Treat yourself to a chocolate massage—an amazing dry skin remedy—for an absolutely divine experience. If you prefer to spend your downtime reading, no problem: countless books about

chocolate are available to inspire your senses. For best results, enjoy with a big mug of hot chocolate!

Sweet smarts

Curious minds are sure to enjoy uncovering the history and secrets of their favourite dessert by attacking Google. Alternatively, test your family’s knowledge by hosting a round of chocolate-themed trivia (you can find a wealth of questions and answers online), with a grand prize up for grabs that’s made entirely of— you guessed it—chocolate.

Try some games involving chocolate with your family this Easter. Photo supplied

Enjoy the long holiday weekend, not the break this Easter Slippery grass, holes in the ground, a rusty nail, and good old just not watching where you are going … the classic Easter Egg hunt claimed a few victims last year. The half-dozen people who needed medical attention as a result of hunting for chocolatey treats is negligible alongside the 19,951 New Zealanders who needed ACC help after hurting themselves over Easter 2017. There’s a saying that home is where the heart is, but in and around the house is also where most injuries happen, and last Easter was no exception with 11,077 people hurting themselves at home. When it comes to indoor injuries, we can’t confirm whether it was Colonel

might disagree with that sentiment after injuring backs, shoulders, arms, fingers, or necks while pruning, planting, digging or weeding. There were also 279 DIY injuries (involving hammers, saws, power tools, etc), with falls a common cause. Backs and spines bore the brunt with 63 injuries; 30 people hurt fingers or thumbs, while shoulders, hands, wrists, and eyes also sustained damage. The best way to stay to safe while doing DIY is to be realistic about your ability – if you can’t do it, get an expert in. Plan your day so you’re not rushing to get finished in the evening when you’re tired and more likely to slip up. If you’re going to use hire

Mustard or Miss Scarlet who were hurt, but there was a good chance it was in the kitchen with a knife. Over a third of the 1176 injuries that occurred inside happened in the kitchen, and 147 were cuts or puncture wounds. Luckily there are some simple steps you can take to improve safety, such as clearing away clutter; cleaning up wet spills, and making sure there are no loose rugs for excited kids (and maybe some over-enthusiastic adults) to trip on, especially when hunting down hidden eggs. Easter is often seen as a last chance to do home maintenance ahead of winter. A spot of gardening is said to be therapeutic, but 783 people

equipment, make sure you have the appropriate safety gear such as closed shoes, ear muffs, safety glasses and face masks. Falling off ladders can lead to serious injuries. Last Easter there were 142 ladder-related claims; two-thirds of them from falls. Make sure you use a safe, stable ladder; always keep three points of contact (both feet and one hand) with the ladder, and don’t be tempted to over-reach sideways. It’s much safer to get down, move your ladder, and then resume your work. So whether you’re sniffing out hidden chocolate or preparing to paint the house, think safety first so you enjoy the holiday, not the break, this Easter.

Ahem...is that a glow or just plain sweat Jacinda? By Farida Master

F

rom princess of Niue to daughter of Niue, every island wants to put their claim on Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s baby, said Minister for Pacific Peoples, Aupito William Sio at a formal ceremony hosted to welcome the premier at the recent ASB Polyfest. Having just returned from Niue and Samoa a week before, the Jacindamania was clearly at work as Mr Sio called her mother, daughter and princess of Niue. “Her baby’s birth is not only going to be celebrated in the length and breadth of Aotearoa but is also going to be celebrated by Samoa, Niue, Cook Islands,

Tonga, Tahiti and every island that will want a stake in naming her,” he said at a formal ceremony at the Polyfest attended by Labour Party Ministers, MPs, members of the opposition and other stakeholders. “Every island wants to give Jacinda’s baby a name and the baby’s first birthday will be celebrated by hundreds of churches and every island,” said Mr Sio. Maybe you should call your baby Niue, suggested a high ranking government official from Niue. The 37-year-old PM tried to make light of the flood of compliments saying, “That is very sweet of you to say that I am daughter of Niue but I have to earn it. I am so uncoordinated

and if you see me dance....” Practically everyone at the event complimented the PM with a baby bump about her ‘special glow’, but Ms Ardern quickly brushed it off saying, “I am only sweating!” Looking positively relaxed, she tried to focus on the young leaders instead at the iconic multicultural festival that celebrates song, dance, culture and diversity. Addressing the students at the MIT Niue Stage and the University of Auckland Samoan Stage, she said, “People keep saying that young people are our future, but I believe that they are our present, our now. You give me hope that New Zealand is in good hands.”

A festive get-together for Easter weekend H

ave you invited family or friends for brunch or dinner over the Easter weekend? This is the perfect opportunity to concoct some wonderful dishes, enjoy yourself and impress your guests. You can make sure the event is a roaring success by following these three suggestions.

Invite autumn into your home East Auckland Ministers Association members and local ministers Pastor Peter Morton, East Auckland Ministers Association chair and senior pastor of River Christian Church Pakuranga (centre) , with Rev Kevin Findlay of Howick Presbyterian Church (right), and Rev Dr Richard Waugh, senior minister of East City Wesleyan Church, Botany. Times photo Wayne Martin

Time to rise and shine! T

he combined churches’ Easter Sunrise service is a key part of the local community calendar, and for more than 20 years. We have a large crowd that gathers on Stockade Hill, a very important location in East Auckland, and where Easter services, Anzac Day services, and other special events are regularly held. This year the East Auckland Ministers Association has

arranged for several local ministers and congregational members to lead the service. “Special music, an encouraging resurrection message, and a friendly welcome is assured to everyone who comes along at 6.30am,” said Rev Waugh. “This year, with daylight saving stopping early on Easter Day, we all have the benefit of an extra hour’s sleep! So good reason to be up early and on Stockade Hill by 6.30am.”

Feedback Council ignoring beaches

Decorate your home with pastel colours to evoke the colours of autumn. Hang up garlands and balloons and decorate the table with

a bouquet of beautiful flowers or plants. There are a surprising number of flowers available in the NZ autumn. Another great idea is to fill some wine glasses or small bowls with chocolate eggs. They’ll be decorative as well as delicious!

Your personal touch

Use your Easter party as an excuse to try variations of traditional dishes. Look for inspiration in magazines and newspapers, and then have fun adding your personal touch. Why not try a new mystery ingredient

People with a sweet-tooth should forget about calorie counting and just enjoy themselves at Easter. Next to rejoicing in the resurrection, everyone knows that there’s no better way to celebrate Easter than by eating loads of chocolate and maybe even a few lollies. And, if you feel like it, why not make your very own desserts? Of course, for Christians around the world, the real reason for the event is to remember Jesus Christ and what He represents. Traditionally, Easter coincides with the end of Lent, a period during which many foods were forbidden, including anything

containing sugar. That might explain the excitement about the chocolate on Easter Sunday morning! Today, this holiday is a great favourite for young and old alike. Everybody waits impatiently for the day when they can put out their baskets to see what the Easter Bunny will bring. Perhaps it will be a big chocolate rabbit, or a giant chocolate egg filled with lollies. Every year brings new treats for our taste buds. This is a plea to keep our beautiful beaches clean and maintained. Why is it that large logs and branches, washed ashore weeks ago from recent storms, are not removed by Council? The beaches at Eastern Beach, Mellons Bay, Howick and Cockle Bay are used extensively by locals and visitors, of all ages, and I believe they should be cleaned on a regular basis. The debris that washes ashore along this eastern coast, spoils the beach. Logs and branches are a hazard, to people having to navigate around them, boats,

Other debris, like grass, leaves, bark and seaweed ‘composts’ on the beach in huge piles, making it impossible to walk on the beach in some instances, and also starts to smell bad when the weather is hot. seemed ok but this has now been done, and you should be embarrassed by your team’s workmanship. We had a perfectly good road and now we have a section that is no longer flat to drive on. My only hope is this is not the final finished product you have left us with. Please get your supervisor to inspect this as soon as possible and put it back the way it was before. Right now you have made a perfectly good road look like it has been fixed by a bunch of amateurs. Howick Board, you need to come and look at this. Now they have started on the side road. What a waste of taxpayers’ money. It needs to stop and be fixed back to the way it was.

Parker’s moment of truth J

oseph Parker faces his world heavyweight boxing unification moment of truth against multiple champion Anthony Josuha in Cardiff, Wales, before 80,000 fans on Easter Sunday (NZ time) which doubles as April Fool’s Day. Most of those fans will be baying for his blood after he and his handlers taunted Joshua’s camp about the incredibly popular English fighter’s glass jaw. The fact is, the muscular former Olympic champion has a 20-0 knockout record which includes the scalp of the great Wladimir Klitschko against whom he got off the canvas to stop in the 11th round 11 months ago. Admittedly at 41, having won 64 fights, 53 by KO, Klitschko was past his peak. But the bout showed Joshua has courage to back his power against a formidable opponent and starts as hot favourite against the Kiwi Samoan. Unbeaten after 24 fights, 18 by KO, the likeable Parker certainly doesn’t lack confidence in baiting a dangerous WBA, IBO and IBF multiple champion who will be eager to lower the boom against him. If Joshua does stop Parker, he will be the first to do so. Parker won the vacant WBO title in a hard-fought contest against American slugger Andy Ruiz in Auckland and last defended in Manchester, England, in December against Hughie Fury, cousin of former champion Tyson Fury, last September. Earlier, before claiming the crown, he won another close encounter against the formidable

Agnew’s Angle Carlos Takam who gave Joshua a tough battle before the fight was stopped amongst some controversy. While Parker looked lethargic in recent fights, his camp’s growing confidence going into this one follows surgery to his left arm which he had not been able to straighten properly. With that fixed, he and trainer Kevin Barry are confident his power and speed have returned after also losing a few kilograms in an impressive Los Angeles training camp. It will need to against a champion who is a better boxer than they give him credit for. True, Parker may be faster and sharper and two years younger at 26 but, at 6ft 4in, he’s two inches shorter and with a 76 inch reach concedes Joshua 6 inches. No one doubts Parker’s courage but talk is cheap unless it is delivered with the wit of a Muhammad Ali, backed up by performance in the ring. Having previously taken KO artist David Tua to an unsuccessful world heavyweight title crack against Lennox Lewis, Barry is confident Parker will cause a major upset this time. I hope he’s right but don’t put your house on it. He’s never met a puncher of Joshua’s power and will need to be wary of his right upper-

cut and right cross. Meanwhile, congratulations to the Blacks Caps on their fantastic innings and 49 runs first test pink ball win against England at Eden Park after the tourists had been routed for 58 in their first innings, with a brilliant Trent Boult captur-

ing six wickets and Tim Southee four. Massive kudos too to Henry Nicholls (149 not out) and Kane Williamson (102), with the skipper breaking his deadlock with the late Martin Crowe and Ross Taylor to become the first Black Cap to make

18 test centuries. Willamson also made two fabulous catches before leg spinner Todd Astle closed down England in the rain-affected match by dismissing the tail-enders. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

BDSC crowned baseball champs By KELLY TEED B otany Downs Secondary College has been crowned national champions after winning the New Zealand Secondary Schools Baseball Championships last week. Team manager Debbie McGregor says the team dug deep in the final moments to take out the win, after trailing behind One Tree Hill.

“In the first innings One Tree Hill got one home and in the second innings One Tree Hill got another one home so they were two runs up,” said McGregor. “In the sixth innings we went into bat and we got six runs which meant when One Tree Hill went into bat in the seventh and last innings, they needed at least five runs of which they only got one.” Botany Downs Secondary

College senior team won against One Tree Hill 6-3. McGregor says it was smooth sailing for the team until the final. “Nobody touched us in the round robins [and] the semi was an easy win. It was awesome [for Botany]. They really dug deep, being two nil down, to achieve what they did was outstanding,” she said. “It was a real team effort too – it wasn’t just one person.”

Howick infant has been taken into care after suffering serious injuries believed to be consistent with domestic abuse. The four-month-old baby girl was admitted to Middlemore Hospital on February 18 where medical staff discovered significant fractures to her skull, ribs, arms and legs. The fractures have been described by medical experts as being of varying ages and classically associated with non-accidental injury. A police investigation into the incident has been launched and they are calling for anyone with information to come forward. While the child is expected to make a full recovery, police are “extremely concerned” by these injuries and Oranga Tamariki has been notified, says Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland. The child’s family and neighbours have been questioned but police say they are no closer to finding out who inflicted the injuries on the child. Detective Senior Sergeant Sutherland says the safety and wellbeing of the child is paramount and she is currently in the care of Oranga Tamariki. “Police have not yet charged anyone however our enquiries are ongoing,” he says. ew data showing that the residential value of Kiwi cities is closing in on $1 trillion dollars is both good and bad news for the New Zealand housing market and wider economy, according to Property Institute of New Zealand chief exective Ashley Church. The revelation of the big jump in value, between 2015 and 2018, is one of several findings in a new report, released by the Property Institute and property market data company Valocity. The report measured the combined value of residential housing stock in New Zealand and found that, taken as a single entity – residential housing in New Zealand is now worth $941,611 – up from $667,718 in 2015. The report also showed that the value of residential housing in all of our main centres is also up – although the impact of this growth in value is uneven with Tauranga at one extreme with growth of 63.27 per cent and Christchurch at the other extreme with growth of just 11.6 per cent over the 3 years. In all cases, except Hamilton, price growth in 2017 was the same, or greater than 2016. ■■ Auckland is now worth $469 billion (up from $344b in 2015) ■■ Wellington is now worth over $88b (up from around $60b in 2015) ■■ Christchurch is now worth

over $67b (up from around $60b in 2015) ■■ Tauranga is now worth over $34b (up from around $21b in 2015) ■■ Hamilton is now worth around $28b (up from around $18b in 2015) ■■ Dunedin is now worth almost $17b (up from around $12b in 2015) Mr Church says that the biggest surprise in the report was the finding that house price growth was stronger, in 2017, than it was in 2016. “There’s been a general consensus that the market has been flattening – but this data suggests that it’s more a case of growth moving away from Auckland to other parts of the country. That’s not entirely unexpected as house price booms in regional centres usually start later than Auckland and continue for a while after a boom in Auckland has ended – but the extent of the strength of those prices, particularly in Tauranga and Wellington, is still surprising”. Mr Church says that the news is both good and bad for the housing market and wider economy. “We don’t tend to think of residential property as part of the productive sector of the economy – but when you see the growth in house values, like this, as a combined figure, you can appreciate that the

country is now ‘worth more’ and that our ‘common wealth’ as a nation has increased. That has all sorts of positive implications for things like lower interest rates, improvements in international indicators, and an improvement in our preparedness for increased numbers of kiwis entering retirement”. Mr Church says that the figures also mean that many of those of who own property are now wealthier than they were three years ago. However, Mr Church also says that the new data isn’t all good news. “The report also tells us that houses are now even more expensive which means it’s even harder to get into the market than it was three years ago”. “It also means that the baseline cost for ‘affordable’ housing programs - such as Kiwibuild will keep increasing as land and building costs increase. That’s a strong argument to get those houses built as quickly as possible”. Mr Church says the figures also mean that the economy has now become even more sensitive to interest rate increases. “To the extent that this increase in house prices is mortgage funded we’re now that much more susceptible to a major hit on the economy if interest rates were to increase too much over the next few years”.
