Pakuranga murder trial begins T
he trial of the man accused of killing young Pakuranga mother Chozyn Koroheke is underway in the High Court at Auckland. Turiarangi Tai is accused of shooting Ms Koroheke once in the abdomen at close range with a 12 gauge double-barrelled shotgun at a house on Pakuranga Rd on April 4 last year. Ms Koroheke died from her injuries in the back of an ambulance later that night. On Monday, the Crown presented its opening statement to the court. Crown prosecutor Mark Williams told the court Tai’s actions showed intent – no matter how briefly. “Mr Tai knew what he wanted to do. He loaded the firearm, disengaged the safety catch and he delib-
erately pulled the trigger with the clear intention to kill her or, at the very least, injure her.” Mr Williams said the relationship between Tai and Ms Koroheke was short, but “characterised by violence.” “That violence manifested itself with fatal consequences.” He told the court Tai’s attitude towards Ms Koroheke “was one of control and suspicion. Chozyn had told friends that Tai had threatened to shoot her – and on one occasion, had pointed a gun at her.” The Crown alleges Tai also stabbed Ms Koroheke in the thigh with a knife on one occasion. “It was a relationship characterised by frequent violence and controlling behaviour at the hands of Tai.” Defence lawyer for Tai, Peter
Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga
Kaye urged the jury to put their emotions aside and judge the case dispassionately. “We all know we’re here because a 22-year-old young woman has died. We can never bring her back….equally, another 22-year-old in Mr Tai...is charged with the most serious criminal offence that our criminal law knows – murder. “Quite a sobering thought at the age of 22 for both of them isn’t it?” He asked the jurors to look at the word murder in documents as a “two sided mirror”, and also see the word manslaughter. “There’s no argument about the issue or whether it caused death. You cannot find him not guilty. It’s either guilty of murder or manslaughter,” said Mr Kaye. One witness, who described her friendship with Ms Koroheke
as “very close” and “like sisters” said the relationship between the defendant and victim was “a bit rocky, but it was clear they loved each other”. Samantha Douglas, who was in a relationship with Koroheke’s brother and lived with Tai and Koroheke at the address on Pakuranga Road, said the pair argued frequently – and it got worse in the week leading up to the victim’s death. Douglas told the court the relationship between the two “got bad quick” and said she had taken Koroheke to hospital on two occasions – the first time because Tai had “smacked her [in the head] with a rock” which she estimated to be around 10cm in diameter. She said the day of the incident had been quieter than usual

because Tai had been ignoring the victim. That afternoon, Tai had brought a double-barrelled shotgun into the house and was “showing it off,” the court heard. Ms Douglas was unimpressed and left the room, asking Koroheke on her way out “Where the hell did that come from?”, to which Koroheke allegedly responded “I don’t know but wherever it’s from, it’s so stupid.” The victim and defendant allegedly argued later that day when Tai asked Koroheke for petrol money and she refused, saying: “he hasn’t talked to me all day, why should I help him?” Douglas told the court she had witnessed Tai packing up his car, a white Toyota Celica, with his belongings and Ms Koroheke’s hair ➤ Turn to Page 9 straighteners.

round 180 people turned out for public meeting on transport at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Hosted by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, the meeting on Tuesday was intended to provide the community with information about important transport projects focused on East Auckland. Auckland Transport gave a presentation and was to hear directly from residents. “Transport is arguably the biggest concern that local residents have raised with me since I became their MP, and I felt it was important to engage directly with them and with officials from Auckland Transport,” Brown says. “To have had such a large turnout on Tuesday confirms that the people of Pakuranga care about what hap-

Other issues discussed at the meeting included the East West Link cancelled by the new government, and the proposed 10c a litre fuel tax. “The East West Link is a vital project for the Onehunga-Penrose industrial area with flow on benefits for Pakuranga residents travelling out West and to the airport,” he says. Brown says he will continue to fight for the East West Link to be reinstated as a priority infrastructure project. “I am also very concerned about the fuel tax that has been jointly proposed by Labour and the Auckland Council. “I was buoyed by the opposition shown by those who attended this public meeting, and I will ensure their voices are heard as this issue progresses.”

highly recommend getting yourself down to Howick Little Theatre’s latest production of Cruise Control. Written by David Williamson and directed by Nathan Hey, Cruise Control follows three bickering couples as they board a cruise ship travelling from London to New York for seven days of marital healing. They board with the hope of escaping their reality, but instead find themselves trapped in the hellish world of designated dinner seating and B-grade cabaret. I’ve tried so hard to pick out a favourite moment from the play or even a stand out performance,
but I just can’t do it. Each character was portrayed so well and each offered so much to the story that I couldn’t possibly pick and choose. However, the hilariously clashing personalities of Darren Brodie (James Calverley) and Richard Manton (Arthur Young) alone are worth the trip - and Sanjay Menon (Charlie the waiter) performed incredibly strongly in his first play with the theatre. So pack your bags, grab your passport and climb aboard at Howick Little Theatre for the cruise of your life - you’ll only regret not going sooner.

News bites Pressure on the gulf is increasing, and investment and infrastructure and new policy directions are not keeping pace.
Hauraki Gulf in sobering state By Therese Henkin
F
isheries are dwindling and water quality is dismal as pressure on the Hauraki Gulf increases. The State of the Gulf report was released last Friday and highlights a number of issues facing the gulf with poor water quality, ecosystem decline and poor fish stocks a major concern. Rapid population growth, overfishing and insufficient infrastructure are responsible for the gulfs poor state says chair of the Hauraki Gulf Forum John Tregidga. “We’re not catching less fish, we’re not milking less cows and we’re certainly not building less homes,” he says. “Pressure on the gulf is increasing, and investment and infrastructure and new policy directions are not keeping pace.” And climate change is only adding to the problem, he says. The oceans are getting warmer and more acidic leaving the gulf
vulnerable to invasive species. Increased erosion and sediment collecting in the ocean are a result of rising sea levels and heavy storms. Half Moon Bay local and president of the Recreational Fishing Council Keith Ingram says the problem continues because nobody wants to face up to the problem and make the hard decisions. “Auckland Council and other councils are still condoning the continued discharge of both urban and agricultural run-off into the Hauraki Gulf.” Ingram, who has worked and fished in the gulf all his life, says chemicals and pathogens are being washed into the gulf and are responsible for destroying the habitat. “We are having heavier storms and our storm water drains can’t cope so we have lots of waste washing out into the gulf.” Sewage and road waste such as oil and heavy metals are some of many things that are being

washed into our storm water systems and overflowing into the gulf. Alongside this, rural run-off from the Hauraki plains is increasing with fertilisers and nitrates also making their way into the gulf. “All of these things are playing a part in destroying the environment,” Ingram says. “Then to add salt to injury we have our fisheries that are struggling because their habitat is changing and they don’t like it or can’t survive here,” he says. The report identifies that snapper and crayfish populations are down by 70 to 80 per cent in the gulf. “We are now seeing a very juvenile fishery of undersize fish and the commercial fishing industry is surviving on catching these undersize fish,” Ingram says. The Hauraki Gulf Forum is calling for central and local government, as well as iwi, to work on an action plan for improving the state of the gulf.

Rotary ready for run By Kelly Teed

ust off your sneakers and break out the activewear because the Howick Rotary Fun Walk and Run is back for another year! It started with only a couple of hundred people in 2005, but this year around 600 people are expected to take to the streets on Sunday March 18 across the three routes on offer. Organising committee member Colin Monk says the event is a great way to get the whole family involved in keeping fit and healthy. The tracks cater for all levels of fitness - walkers or runners can choose from a 5.9km primary course, a 6.9km intermediate course, or an 8.1km extended course, with five water stations available
on the way. Mr Monk says the event creates a friendly rivalry between local primary and intermediate schools that compete to be crowned the winning school – and this year, with more schools entered than ever, that rivalry is sure to increase. With spot prizes on offer (the best selection ever, says Mr Monk) and a delicious sausage sizzle on completion, there’ll be no shortage of motivation to finish. Each participating child will also receive a medal at the finish line. All courses start and finish on Stockade Hill, so participants can soak up some postrun and walk views. Sponsors this year include Avantiplus, Mitre 10 Mega Botany, New World Howick, John Russell Schoolwear,
Dilmah Tea, June Gray Charitable Trust, Howick Local Board, Stevenson Village Trust, the Athlete’s Foot, and many others. All proceeds go to the Howick Coastguard, and the Rotary Club of Howick covers all the costs associated with running the event. The more participants, the
greater the amount raised for the Coastguard. ■■ The Howick Fun Walk and Run will be held at Stockade Hill on Sunday March 18 at 9am. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children and $10 for school teams of four, and registration can either be done howickfunwalkrun. co.nz/ or enter on the day.
House fire
A Pakuranga home has been destroyed after a fire that ripped through the property on Saturday. A neighbour on Archmillen Avenue said she called emergency services. Four fire appliances responded to the incident.
Some changes to Times’ distribution The Times has changed the way it delivers its papers. “The departure of our distribution manager Emma Smith after doing a marvellous job for the past 10 years has made us reassess the way we deliver our newspapers,” says Times’ CEO Reay Neben. As of March 1, 2018 - PMP took over distributing Times newspapers.
“It has become harder and harder to cover the fast-growing areas and the decision to move to a distribution company was not taken easily. For so many years we have contracted unbelievably wonderful people who delivering the papers in what sometimes became a family event” she said. “Over the years I have
been out in all weather delivering the papers and I know just how hard it can be. “To all those people young and old who have delivered the paper over the many years, a huge thank you. “We have had to outsource this to the distribution company PMP and we ask our readers to please let us know if they
don’t receive their copy of the Times. “There will be teething problems so please bear with us,” Mrs Neben said. “The goal is 100 per cent coverage so if you don’t receive your paper go to the link below or ring on 271-8000.” ■■ Do you have queries about circulation? Your community paper is still here The announcement made recentlye that Fairfax is closing 28 of its community and rural newspapers is a sad day for the free press. Many of the newspapers they are closing around the country were purchased as thriving locally-owned publications serving unique communities. In most cases, these same communities have seen the rise of independent local papers - papers like Howick and Pakuranga Times and Botany and Ormiston Times - and over the past few years. Those taken over by the big foreignowned corporates have subsequently reduced their involvement in these local communities before abandoning them. Far from the inference that print is dead - it is not. Where do people find out what is happening in their towns and communities; where to go shopping, what’s happening at school; who’s winning at the school sports. This is hyper-local news. “This is news specific only to our own communities, said Times CEO and founder Reay Neben.
There are many events that happen in the Times’ distribution area that would not have happened without the paper to promote and give exposure. All our publications belong to a national association for community newspapers and over the past three years the membership has doubled. The future looks bright. “The sad thing is that I was at a conference in Australia when the CEO of Fairfax announced that print was dead and the future was digital,” Mrs Neben said. “Well that has proved to be incorrect. While community papers continue to hold a place in our households, daily newspapers have suffered - that was 10 years ago.” Local newspapers remain strong worldwide as communities become more diverse. “Without the local paper, who will take up the mantle of journal of record? As long as we have our support from the readers, advertisers, local council and the many other groups in our community, we will continue to serve.”

Brit & Euro Car Show
Times photos by Wayne Martin
Thousands flock to car show
T
he third annual Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show on Sunday was a “fantastic success”, says car show chairman Rev Dr Richard Waugh. “We had a record 837 cars and some motorcycles displayed, with crowd estimates between 7000 to 9000 people, assisted by more than 100 volunteers, and with all donations going to the good work of the Howick Historical Village,” he said. Car display numbers and public attending were up about 33 per cent on the previous year’s record attendance. The ambience of the treelined avenues at Lloyd Elsmore Park and the adjacent Howick Historical Village all made for a very special experience, he said. “We are always indebted to the many car clubs and car owners for their wonderful efforts preparing their magnificent cars for display,” Rev Waugh said. The car show would not be possible without the major
sponsorship support from Howick Local Board, and other sponsorship from Protecta Insurance, Times Newspapers and NZ Classic Driver magazine. “Many supportive organisations helped in all sorts of important ways, including Howick Historical Village, EAST FM radio, Cameron Leggett (photographer), Ormiston and Te Puru Scouts, Howick Menz Shed, Rotary Clubs of East Auckland, LifeGrowth Community Trust (East City Wesleyan Church), Pakuranga United Rugby Club, Parks Department of Auckland Council, and the Mercedes-Benz Botany dealership. “Our committee thanks them all. “On behalf of our committee and especially secretary Darryl Bretherton, registrar Richard Leech, and Patron Laurie Hayward, many thanks to everyone involved who helped make the day such a memorable success. “We encourage people to complete the online evaluation form (see www.briteurocarshow.nz).”
Up to 9000 people are believed to have attended the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show at Lloyd Times photos Wayne Martin Elsmore Park.

sis before putting this into place. Had they done so, they might have realised this policy simply wasn’t going to work. Instead of creating policy designed to grab votes, perhaps the Government should focus on ideas that will make a real difference in the lives of our young people and improve the quality of education for all New Zealanders. The $2.8 billion price tag for this policy could have been used on many other more meaningful policies. Simeon Brown,MP for Pakuranga

The main reason Labour introduced this policy was to encourage students to pursue tertiary education who otherwise might be put off by the cost. The fact that we have seen no increase in enrolments as a result means the government is spending money fixing a problem that doesn’t exist. They seem to have ignored the fact that tertiary education in New Zealand was already among the most accessible in the world, due to existing policies like interest-free loans and weekly allowances for students from low-income families that don’t have to be paid back. It’s also somewhat surprising, given their propensity for working groups and enquiries, to learn that the Government failed to undertake a cost-benefit analy-

he government’s new policy of giving tertiary students their first year at university for free has backfired, with Universities New Zealand recently confirming no rise in new enrolments, while facing an increase in processing costs. This is disappointing, especially given the massive price tag associated with the policy, and the government should be rethinking their plan to extend it to three years by 2024. If the policy is providing no benefit at great cost, what is the point? Many universities are also reporting an increase in costs associated with processing enrolments, largely due to confusion around eligibility and how to apply, as well as hundreds of extra IT hours spent attempting to handle the change.

on the victim. Tai allegedly told Ms Douglas “You didn’t see anything” before leaving the scene. The Crown alleges Tai fled the scene after a matter of minutes, using Koroheke’s debit card to buy petrol, drinks and cigarettes among other items while Koroheke lay dying. He evaded capture for two weeks, before eventually handing himself in to police. Tai is appearing in front of a jury and Justice Matthew Muir in the High Court at Auckland on one charge of murder and one of unlawful use of a firearm. He has admitted to the firearm charge but pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder. The trial has been set down for four weeks.

“You f*****g b**ch, before jabbing Koroheke in the stomach with the gun and pulling the trigger – the Crown alleges at a distance of between 10 and 50cm. Under examination from Williams, Douglas recounted how Koroheke held her right hip, looked at her [Douglas] and collapsed into her brother’s arms after being shot. Douglas said Tai and Nacyn then yelled out at her to call an ambulance. She then ran to a neighbour’s house to use a telephone. She said immediately after shooting Koroheke, Tai began crying and repeating “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Ms Douglas said she returned to the scene to find Nacyn and Tai attempting to perform CPR

Tai reversed out only to come back down the driveway, where Ms Koroheke went out to see why the defendant had returned. She then ran back inside, saying “he’s got a shotgun”. Douglas told the court she, Koroheke and Koroheke’s brother Nacyn took cover in Douglas and Nacyn’s bedroom. She says it was a matter of seconds between Tai pushing the door to the bedroom open with the shotgun and Koroheke being shot. The court heard that Tai allegedly hit Koroheke in the head with the shotgun and said

Magnificent hoe down!
To all you organisers and participants, what a magnificent performance you have given to the good people of Howick and all those who attended. All the side shows and acts were very professional and the music was phantasmagoric. It was also an honoured pleasure to see and chat to our National MP (Pakuranga) Simeon Brown, his delightful wife Rebecca and her brother. She is still recovering from her fall, and was it a real pleasure to see them all there, and their encouragement. The weather was magnificent and the pony club was doing a very enthusiastic trade. Where was a sausage sizzle? Local schools, Rotary, Lions, any other group looking for exposure? NZ traditionally has a sausage sizzle at such events. Bit disappointed that Auckland Transport manning detours and road closures were unaware that all through-traffic also applied to a group of lycra-dressed cyclists, with no interest in the proceedings, totally ignored the signage, and rode through at speed, and one individual when approached refused to get off his bicycle.

Car Thieves
Some time during the night of February 10 my car, which was parked outside my Bucklands Beach Rd property, was broken into. The ignition was totally destroyed after a failed attempt to start it. According to a recent article in

the NZ Herald, three youths stole a car outside another Bucklands Beach Rd property during the same evening. The culprits have since been apprehended and referred to Youth Aid. Not that I’m accusing this trio of trying to steal my car. I have no proof. But I find it hard to believe that there would have been two gangs of car thieves operating in the same area at the same time.
Water charges awful
Ann Henderson Half Moon Bay
If you were to have a meal at a restaurant and the meal cost $35.52, you would not expect to pay $65.10 to go to the toilet afterwards. The Auckland Council’s motto “Never give a sucker an even break” seems to apply to Auckland’s suffering ratepayers. For two pensioners, our water rates are on par with the monstrous electrical monthly bills we get since the Auckland Electric Power Board was sold off. It’s not as if Auckland was in the middle of the Sahara desert and they had to fly the water in by the bucketful. We usually get too much of the stuff which can be verified by the unfortunate people who have leaky homes that were passed by council building inspectors that now leak live sieves. The charges for water are a financial money pit for families living in Auckland, lowering their standard of living. Water is an essential to a human being – we all need it. It should be available at cost. It should not be a money maker for a council that is not capable of running a tight ship.

Dumping has got to stop
Garden waste that was dumped in Gills Road Pigeon Mountain Car Park on Saturday, February 24. A friend saw someone in a small truck (with sides) at around 12pm1pm that was loitering in that area. The truck was loaded with large white bags which were tied at the tops. He felt a bit curious about what this person was up to but did not stop to observe. The waste looks like Yucca or similar soft wood which has been shredded. I live opposite this area and it is a place that people leave rubbish and old household whiteware often,

In response to an article (Times, March 1), about Half Moon Bay ramp. For the last month I have been trying to find out about what is happening about the ramps. I have been onto Auckland City Council and been shoved from pillar to post. No one on the phones knows what department to put you onto for advice including the Harbour Master (who has nothing to do with ramps). I went to Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and spoke with them. They gave me the name obviously when they do not want to pay to dispose of their unwanted rubbish. I would appreciate that this could be brought to the attention of the readers who may have an idea of someone that could have been
of a councillor who I rang about three times and no answer ever came back. If you get no response from council, who do you turn to? It’s very dangerous for elderly boaties and women handling vessels while partners are parking trailers or retrieving trailers from parking areas which can be a long way off. Now the extra to turn left at the first set of lights has been installed. Safety first everywhere but here. Wake up whoever is in control.

A really big thanks to you, Rod Sheridan (of Coastal Erosion), Jared, the boys at Geotech, the fence handlers and all associated with the installation of the mesh and boulders at Mellons Bay Beach. You have all been most professional, and have the full support from the Mellons Bay area, apart from a very few who will never be happy with anything anyway. We spoke to your workers and supported them with enthusiasm, and thank you for your kind response. Without your cooperation we will achieve nothing. I enclose photos of the beach wall as now constructed, very professionally by you, taken after Cyclone GITA. I am aware that the strength of the wind, swell and tide height were not as high as the other day, but the results are impressive, none the less. So thank you. Rod, we have had good local feedback about the mesh and stones and the feeling is to leave the stones and mesh as presently installed, and to build the wooden, or concrete wall to the seaward side of the stones. Our thinking, is that the bedrock is solid and stable, (also confirmed by Geotech), so would make excellent sense to continue with your professional work. How does that fit with you,
and would also negate removing, mesh and stones at more cost? We do urge you most carefully to consider this option. I (we) are most disappointed with the photo of (Local Board chair David Collings and some Cockle Bay residents and a few, who do not even live there, complaining about the proposals for the repairs to Cockle Bay Beach. Barry Wood of Cockle Bay was at the meeting on Mellons Bay Beach, Friday, January 26, with the Mayor, our local MP, councillors and others, and was aware of the proposed work to be carried out on both Mellons Bay and Cockle Bay. Why on earth did he not say anything at that time? Now you have a photo of David Collins rarking them up instead of trying to use a bit of common sense! Come on guys, stop playing politics. Also why on earth is a tractor up and down the beach, polluting the atmosphere with diesel fumes, and doing what the sea and wind will do whatever it wishes with the sand! Right now Mellons Bay is completely covered in sand, but tomorrow, or whenever, it will be moved according to tide, wind and sea, and we will have nothing.
John Champion Mellons Bay
An open letter to Auckland Transport I decided to wait till March and give you the benefit of the doubt before responding to your email (see below). I have copied the Times and Simeon Brown (National MP Pakuranga) as he is having a meeting on Transport issues on 6th March and local public transport should be one of his priorities. I think it is time you admitted you got it wrong and fix the problem. It has never been as bad as it is now. The 734 bus replaced two buses that used to service Prince Regent Drive (554X and 552), these buses also serviced the Farm Cove area along with the 553X. (3 buses replaced by one). To make matters worse the replacement bus service (734) goes to Botany and not Panmure as proposed during the consultation process. (All working people and University Students go to the city via Panmure not Botany) Since inception the replacement 734 bus is almost always empty, both ways from/to the Ferry. (As a matter of fact so are the other buses from Half Moon Bay Ferry terminal 714,735). As I highlighted to you before no one will catch the bus to the Ferry as there is no combined fare for bus/ferry. This is also the reason the other buses to/from the Ferry
are also empty. (Hop - Ferry $1.80+$7.50=$9.30 compared to bus/train $4.85 per trip) The Buses on Pakuranga road are a mess, although more frequent, in rush hour just means they catch up to each other and then we have a lot of buses at the same time, they are also overcrowded, adding to traffic congestion. (That is another matter, it is a mess) How to fix problem. (If you don’t want to keep running empty buses in peak times). Make the 734 go to Panmure instead of Botany preferably via Farm Cove (like the old 552/554X and 553X), this will take the load off Pakuranga Road and provide a better service for Half Moon Bay and Farm Cove – not everyone wants to catch ferry. Combine the Ferry and Bus fare, this will get people on the bus that want to catch the ferry. This will also get people onto you other empty ferry buses the 714 and 735. Everyone I speak to hate the changes and is very frustrated. There was no consultation. According to your statistics below - Patronage on the existing 552 via Prince Regent Drive has increased approximately 30% since consultation, from approximately 100 boarding’s a day (on weekdays) to 130. It would be good to see what the patronage is now on the 714,734 and 735.

Specialists ADVERTORIAL JH13178A
An exciting move coming up for PDP Denture Studio T
he team at PDP Denture Studio is on the move! Its current premises on Edgewater Drive in Pakuranga has been snapped up by Auckland Transport to make way for the upcoming AMETI project – but the team is taking it in their stride. “We’re moving on to bigger and better things,” says team leader, Leah Taylor. The move is expected to take place in early June and will see them move into some swanky new digs at The Terraces on Howick’s Wellington St. But clients need not fear - while it’ll be a new building, it will still be the same feel with amazing service and the same welcoming atmosphere that clients have fallen in love with over the years. The move is just one of some exciting things coming up at the clinic. Leah, who is now president of the New Zealand Institute of Dental Technologists (NZIDT) will be lecturing at New Zealand’s biggest dental expo in May and in August, she will be heading back to Fiji to speak to the oral health workers of Fiji as part of the Smiles for the Pacific charity. For more than 20 years, the team at PDP Denture Studio has helped patients from all over the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, United States and the Pacific Islands.
It offers high quality, aesthetically pleasing full dentures, partial dentures, Vitallium dentures, Valplast dentures, implant retained dentures (in conjunction with oral surgeons and dentists) and mouthguards. Using the very best European materials and cutting edge technology, PDP Denture Studio’s work is satisfaction guaranteed. And all work at PDP Denture Studio is 100% NZ made…And proud of it!!! As people age or experience weight loss, the jaw shrinks (ridge resorption) and dentures may become ill fitting, at which point they may need to be relined. Luckily, PDP Denture Studio also assists with long term care of dentures and can reline dentures within a day. Cleaning is another essential part of looking after dentures and is recommended once a year. The state-of-the-art Renfert Sympro machine thoroughly removes any plaque, debris or staining that has accumulated, leaving pristine pearly whites. By using the latest materials and techniques, together with years of experience, the team at PDP Dentures works with clients to ensure they receive the smile they’ve always wanted. Ratpack Returns starring Bonaventure, Allan-Moetaua, Rutene Spooner, Tainui Kuru presented by Operatunity at St Columba Presbyterian Church, Ti Rakau Dr, hit all the right notes with an audience of around 250 seniors on Thursday. Accompanied by a band comprising of Mike Booth, Bruce French, Pete France and Grant Winterburn, the daytime concert was a tribute to singing greats Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr. across the Auckland Region increased slightly by 1.0 per cent year on year which is the slowest annual rate since August 2017. Values also ticked up slightly by 0.8 per cent over the past quarter. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,053,948. When adjusted for inflation, values dropped 0.6 per cent over the past year. QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush said, “Values continue to rise faster in Wellington, Dunedin and many regional centres than in Auckland. The Hamilton and Tauranga markets have picked up in February after a sluggish start to the year while the Hawkes Bay continues to see some of the strongest value growth in the North Island. “Christchurch is the only main centre to see values drop over the past year, while many regional areas of the South Island continue to see values rise including Nelson and Tasman, Central Otago and the MacKenzie District as well as Southland and Invercargill. “Low interest rates and the easing in the LVR restrictions has seen many more first home buyers active in areas where they can still afford to enter the market, while some investors also appear to be becoming more active now they need a slightly lower deposit.”

mixed with some areas seeing values continuing to rise and others seeing values drop slightly. The former Auckland City Council suburbs rose 1.2 per cent year on year but were down 0.2 per cent over the past three months and the average value there is now $1,239,086. Waitakere values were down 0.8 per cent year on year but they increased by 0.5 per cent over the past three months. The average value there is now $825,362; North Shore values rose 2.9 per cent in the year to February and 1.5 per cent over the past three months; Manukau was flat at 0.0 per cent change year on year, but values rose 1.3 per cent over the past three months; Papakura values rose 2.3 per cent year on year and 1.5 per cent over the past three months and the average value there has now topped $700,000 and is sitting at $702,318; Franklin values also rose 1.6 per cent year on year and Rodney values were also up 1.5 per cent year on year. QV Auckland senior consultant, James Steele said, “The market remains sluggish with values holding for the most part, with a lack of good quality listings on the market and lower than normal sales volumes for this time of year. “First home buyers remain active in the market and there is good demand for entry level housing stock. However, many are still finding it difficult to get the finance to purchase, with prices remaining high.”

TURN YOUR DREAM INTO A HOME

KiwiBuild solution is New Zealand-made per cent in some cases, to deliver KiwiBuild. “This is astonishing news,” PrefabNZ chief executive Pamela Bell said in a media statement. “New Zealand housing manufacturers and builders are telling us that they are willing to forego some profit in the short term to deliver KiwiBuild. “This research is economic proof that our innovative construction industry does not need a big multi-national outsider in order to deliver on the KiwiBuild promise.” Bell said. “We can have several New Zealand businesses using innovative building methods working together, using home-grown materials and sharing specialist expertise. For example, different companies might make wall panels, or roof pieces or bathroom pods, or any of the elements that

go into a building.” Mark Farmer, author of the game-changing United Kingdom report ‘Modernise or Die’ believed offsite is an important part of the KiwiBuild solution. His experience in the UK shows how government officials have taken on board the advice he provided in his 2016 report where he showed how 25 per cent of the British construction industry would be gone in the next 10 years as workers retired. A year after the Farmer Review, the British Government committed to prioritising offsite building methods for several departments including transport, health, education, justice and defence. Farmer is in New Zealand to discuss what New Zealand needs to do to take full advantage of innovative building methods.

A minimalist’s dream
All they knew was that they wanted their kitchen to be the heart of the home. The ultra modern kitchen sits in the centre of the home, flowing effortlessly into the living area to create a luxurious but comfortable family hub. Mother and home owner Melody Cutfield says she and her husband wanted something that reflected their love of contemporary minimalist design and was practical for their families needs. “Because the kitchen is at the centre of our home, and will be a seen by all our guests, we wanted it to be simple and uncluttered,” Melody says. “But we also wanted our children to feel at home here, and have easy access to everything.” Melody says designer Megan Dyer from Jag Kitchens definitely delivered on their vision. “The kitchen boasts sleek white cabinetry, complimented by a matte stainless steel fridge, black glass appliances and polished concrete floors,” says Kitchen designer Megan Dyer. The black splashback adds a unique edge to the otherwise spotless white kitchen. The crisp

he capacity to build more quality homes is already within New Zealand, instead of overseas, new research from PrefabNZ shows. Instead of shipping in from abroad, a PrefabNZ ‘Capacity & Capability’ report demonstrates that Kiwi-based housing manufacturing firms and construction companies can deliver for KiwiBuild using off-site methods. Through using innovative building methods, PrefabNZ members say they could deliver around 7000 more homes each year from 2020. This would deliver 70 per cent of KiwiBuild’s target of 10,000 homes per year over 10 years. Manufacturers and builders surveyed by PrefabNZ say they are ready to reinvest around 8 per cent of revenue, and up to 20

“The kitchen features Blum Legrabox drawers with Tip-On Blumotion push to open runners which compliments the clean handle-less look. “The flooring is polished concrete and the splashback is black glass.” Durable ‘Jag Acrylic’ high gloss cabinets for easy cleaning and abrasion and stain proof engineered stone countertops were the perfect choice, she says.

white benchtop is made from hardwearing engineered stone which looks beautiful and will stand the test of time. When turned on, a strip of LED lights beneath the overhead cabinets creates a warm, romantic atmosphere within the space, reflecting beautifully off the black splash back. Modern handle-less drawers and plenty of storage space make for a clean, uncluttered kitchen area and help the family achieve their minimalist vision. Melody says she had always wanted her home to be spacious and inviting and her new kitchen fits the theme perfectly. She has nothing but praise for designer Megan Dyer and the Jag kitchen’s team.
“We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted when we went to Jag Kitchens and the team have brought it to life so easily,” she says. “Communication was awesome, and they were really easy to work with. They had a really awesome showroom so we could see aspects of different kitchens that we could use to create exactly what we wanted,” she says. An artist’s impression of what their kitchen would look like
helped the family feel confident with their choices. “When I first met Melody and Glen they loved the idea of having a modern and minimalistic design and this is exactly what we created together,” Kitchen designer Megan Dyer says. She says the focus was on materials that were easy to clean and low maintenance for the busy family while still in keeping with the contemporary theme.
Small additions were made to make the kitchen more practical for their young children, including simple, unobtrusive door handles on the pantry cupboard. A big part of the task was ensuring there was an effortless flow from the kitchen to the living area, Megan says noting that the kitchen island helped achieve this. “The breakfast bar is perfect for the kids to sit at while food is being made,” she says. Melody says she wouldn’t hesitate to go back to the team at Jag Kitchens in the future.
Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

Bannister broke barrier A
world athletics giant has passed away with the recent death of Sir Roger Bannister at the age of
88. The tall, lanky doctor with the long loping stride sprinted away from pacemakers Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher to achieve what was deemed an impossible sub 4 minute mile at Oxford in 3m 59.4s on May 6, 1954. Up until then in had been a battle between the Englishman and gentlemanly Australian John Landy to become the first to do so. In one attempt by Landy in Australia, he blew his chance by stopping to pick up a fallen opponent but later reduced Bannister’s record to 3m 58s. That was the era of our own New Zealand hero Murray Halberg whose favourite distance was the mile before he won Olympic gold over 5000m at the 1960 Rome Olympics shortly before Peter Snell struck gold over 800m. Bannister never won an Olympic medal. But his 1954 British Commonwealth 1500m win over Landy in Vancouver was a classic when he swept past the Aussie’s right shoulder the moment Landy looked for him on his left. With Jack Lovelock (Berlin 1939), Snell (Tokyo 1964) and John Walker (Montreal 1976) becoming Olympics
champions over 1500m, it was not surprising all three New Zealanders would break world mile records. Snell broke the unbeaten Australian Herb Elliott’s 3m 54.5s by 0.1s at Wanganui’s Cook Gardens on January 27, 1962, and reduced it further to 3m 54.04s in Auckland on November 16, 1964. There was never any doubt that Tanzania’s Filbert Bayi and John Walker would be the male middle distance stars of the mid 1970s when they both broke American Jim Ryun’s world 1500m record at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth with gutsy front runner Bayi striking gold. With Bayi clocking a world record 3m 51s mile at Kingston, Jamaica, on May 17,1975, the race to become history’s first sub 3m 50s miler was on, just as it had been before Bannister cracked the 4m barrier 21 years earlier. It was Walker who did it that same year when running the last two laps solo to blitz the field at Gothenburg, Sweden, when I held his stop watch and called him the lap times. “How fast?” he asked when I ran across to him and showed him the stop watch in my shaking hand after he had finished. ‘Under 3 minutes 50 seconds,” I shouted.

Agnew’s Angle “Oh, my God?” he cried, clutching his head before throwing his arms in the air in ecstasy. That race and his 3m 49.4s (10s faster than Bannister) provided the highlight chapter of my second book, Kiwis Can Fly. Walker’s time lasted almost four years before Sebastian Coe (3m 49s) lowered it on the fast Oslo, Norway, track in 1979. Coe lowered it further to 3m 48.53s and 3m 47.33s and in between Steve Ovett held the record at 3m 48.40s. But Steve Cram surpassed his fellow Englishmen when he ran a blistering 3m 46.32s at Oslo in 1985. That was 10 years after Walker, who was to become the first to run 100 sub 4-minute miles and the first 40-year-old to break a barrier Bannister had proved possible. Today the record stands at an amazing 3m 43.13s. set in Rome by El Guerrouj of Morocco on July 7, 1999. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, March 8, 2018 — 23
HPCC beats University Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club dominated its Auckland Premier Cricket two-day match in its Hedley Howarth Top Four match on Saturday against Auckland University. It was a wicket fest at Colin Maiden Park on day two with the boys from Lloyd Elsmore picking up a vital outright win. Howick Pakuranga started the day 59/3 in reply to University’s first innings total of 188. Andrew Morrison (65) played a vital hand for the visitors keeping the scoreboard ticking over as wickets fell around him. Jeet Patel (5-94) put in a great shift for University keeping his side in the hunt for first innings points. The work of Morrison, who also found support from David Winn (30) and Dale Phillips (20) was enough for Howick Pakuranga, reaching 189/7 and declaring with first innings points secured. University found themselves in a deep hole early in their second dig courtesy of Donovan Grobbelaar (3-20) who ripped through University’s
top order to put Howick Pakuranga on top. Adam Jones (5-22) really turned the screws running through University’s batsmen in quick fashion. University simply had no answers slumping to 81 all out, with Jones wrapping up his five-wicket haul, leaving his side 81 runs to chase for victory. Howick Pakuranga’s chase had an early wobble losing both openers early on to give University a sniff with the total at 16/2. The nerves continued for the visitors, Thomas Wells (3-33) destroying the middle order to leave the match on a knife’s edge at 54/6. Cam Neale (35*) was the hero for Howick Pakuranga clearing the fence twice in his quick-fire knock seeing his side home with four wickets to spare and in the process picking up a valuable outright victory for the visitors. ■ Auckland University 188 (JH Barrett 55, B Dench 46; MM McEwan 3-41, A Jones (4-57) and 81 (D Grobbelaar 3-20, A Jones 5-22) lost outright to Howick Pakuranga 189/7 (D Young 30, A Morrison 65, D Winn 30; J Patel 5-94) and 81/6 (C Neale 35*;T Wells 3-33)

Heimgartner impressive D
annemora’s Andre Heimgartner has impressed in his first race weekend with Nissan Motorsport in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Heimgartner qualified 11th fastest in his first ever qualifying session with the team on Saturday, improving on that on Sunday to be in the top 10 shootout with the seventh fastest lap time. “It was pretty good to be into the 10 ten shootout in only my second qualifying session with Nissan Motorsport, unfortunately my time was voided for a kerb strike – we would have been fifth or sixth I think if it hadn’t been for that. It is what it is though. The positive is that the car was pretty fast,” Heimgartner said. When it came to racing, the 22-year-old Kiwi showed plenty of promise – running well into the top 10 during Saturday’s race before coming to grief avoiding a spinning competitor in the last third of the race. He would persevere through leg-numbing seat issues to move back up from 21st to 17th by the end of the race. On Sunday he would start 10th, ahead of a strong first half of the race before engine issues would intervene. “We had some dramas with the seat fit on Saturday, putting pressure on the wrong areas and causing a fair bit of pain and my legs to go numb which you certainly don’t want around the Adelaide 500 circuit,” said Heimgartner.

Heimgartner will next be on-track with Nissan Motorsport in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at the Australian Grand Prix from March 21 to 24. Before then however, he will fly over to his native New Zealand to compete in the final round of the 2017/2018 BNT V8s championship at Hampton Downs this weekend (March 9-11) – he is currently leading the championship. “I am looking forward to getting back to New Zealand and hopefully we can clinch the title over there,” Heimgartner said. “Hampton Downs is an awesome facility and I can’t wait to see what we can do there.”
