Claims of sexual assault, bullying at primary school By THERESE HENKIN

T

he parents of a student at a local primary school are upset that an alleged bullying and sexual assault incident involving some of its students has been “swept under the rug”. A mother, who wished to remain anonymous, says her son had recently started at Macleans Primary School in Bucklands Beach when he came to her with claims that he and some friends were being bullied by older students. “He told me that he and three friends had been approached by boys from the senior school and were threatened - ‘pull down

your pants or I’ll kill you’.” She says it then came out that her son’s friend had allegedly been touched inappropriately by one of the older students. When the victim’s mother was told, her son confirmed the sexual assault and the incident was reported to the police. “My son is very honest and good verbally so he was able to tell me about what has been happening at the school. The mother of the boy who was touched thanked me and said, ‘thank god your son arrived at this school when he did’,” she says. “We took all this information to the headmaster, horrified obviously, and all the school did was ask my son to identify the

older students involved, which he did. The headmaster spoke to the older boys and asked, ‘did you do it?’ and they said ‘no’ and the school considered the matter closed.” She says the bullying has continued even after being reported to the school. “The boys are even angrier now that they have been pointed out. It’s getting even worse.” She says one teacher said if her son was having problems at break times, he could come into the classroom to eat his lunch. “My [son] said, ‘well the teacher isn’t here at break time’. So I turned to her and said are you not here during break time? And she just said ‘that’s right I’m in the staffroom’.” She says she will be pulling her son out

of the school but worries that the students who remain at the school will continue to be subjected to ongoing bullying. “The school is not taking it seriously enough. One of the parents went in and said, ‘children do kill themselves so this is very serious’ and she was told by headmaster that she was being dramatic.” Macleans Primary School principal, Brian Bayly says the school is taking the matter very seriously and values the welfare of its students above all else. “It is of the utmost importance we respect the privacy of our young people. We take the welfare of our students very seriously,” Bayly says. ➤ Turn to Page 3

The Stockade Hill Battle gets serious

T

he long-running battle between locals and Auckland Council regarding Stockade Hill and its surrounding views looks set to continue. Despite a record public turnout at the final hearing in June, the commission hearing failed to recommend fully protecting the existing 360-degree views. Instead, a smaller 137-degree viewshaft, taken from a point near the top of Howick’s historic landmark, was approved. Once the decision was formally announced, a small window of opportunity was available to appeal ‘Plan Change 3’ (PC3). This was bravely taken up by a small group of passionate Howick residents (Janet Dickson (the appellant) together with Howick Local board member Jim Donald, John Champion and Catherine Linton), who are looking to challenge this in the Environment Court. The Auckland Unitary Plan has allowed for an up-zoning to the properties surrounding Stockade Hill. This includes intensified development and raised building heights up to12 metres – a move which, in time, could significantly reduce the much-loved panoramic views. Dickson has appealed this decision on behalf of the whole community and is calling for a full 360-degree view protection. Taking on Auckland Council in the courts does not come cheap. A fundraising drive for The Appeal

Group has just been launched to help fund costs for the level of legal, planning and heritage expertise that is required. “I just couldn’t sit back and let this happen. Stockade Hill is so important to the people of Howick. Everyone I speak to is outraged that we could lose these views forever,” said Dickson. Donald is adamant that the views should not be lost. “I do not want to be part of the generation that loses the views from Stockade Hill. That’s why we had to appeal. These views are for everybody – young and old.” This appeal could be the final fight in a long battle since the Unitary Plan draft was first revealed more than six years ago. The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association has been campaigning against the plan from the very beginning and have lodged as an “Interested Party” to Dickson’s Appeal. As reported in the Times over the years, there has been strong public opposition to the potential up-zoning: ■■ 6700 people signed a petition in February 2016 ■■ More than 200 people made submissions to the original draft Unitary Plan that effected Stockade Hill. ■■ A record 200 local people attended the final commission hearing in June 2018 at Howick Library ■■ 1200 have joined a Facebook page called ‘Save Stockade Hill Views’ in the last six months.

The Facebook page, managed by an independent group of locals known as the ‘Defencibles’, has become a key platform and a forum for those opposed to the up-zoning. “It was difficult for people to know exactly what was going on”, said Defencibles member Ron Fielding. “So many locals think that the whole matter has been sorted out, but it really hasn’t. We’re doing all we can to help shine a light on this issue, keep people informed and encourage supporters to give generously to this cause.” Housing NZ and Auckland Transport have also lodged ‘interested parties’ applications in Dickson’s appeal

Concerns over alleged sexual assault, bullying at primary school ➤➤From page 1 “We are working with the appropriate agencies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. We have taken advice from the Ministry of Education and NZSTA to ensure we are following all the right processes and doing everything we need to do for our young people and the school community.”

Police have confirmed they received a complaint on Wednesday morning last week about an alleged incident that took place at Macleans Primary. “Police have assessed the complaint and, due to the age of the children involved, we have referred the matter to Oranga Tamariki,” police said.

“We can confirm the matter has been referred to us,” says Dee McManus-Emery, Oranga Tamariki regional manager, south Auckland. “In situations like this, Oranga Tamariki works closely with the Ministry of Education. Our focus is always on the welfare of children and young people,” McManusEmery says.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) says they are supporting Macleans Primary School to resolve the matter. “The safety and wellbeing of our children and young people is a top priority for all schools and the Ministry. We were advised about a matter last week which has been referred to Oranga Tamariki as the appropriate agency to manage,”

says Katrina Casey, MOE Deputy Secretary Sector Enablement and Support. “We have contacted the school and will provide support if needed. We are confident that the Board of Trustees and their senior leadership team are managing this matter well and following best practice.”

Counties Manukau Police celebrate Diwali with much gusto By Farida Master The cold winds and the rain didn’t deter the enthusiasm or the upbeat mood of the Diwali celebrations hosted by Counties Manukau Police at the Manukau Police Station second floor car park on Tuesday. District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said that the day that had started off with dark clouds was soon overshadowed by light that truly signifies Diwali, the Festival of Lights. She spoke about the victory of good over evil that is symbolic of the largest Hindu festival in the world. The event was well supported by the Department of Corrections. Paul Rudkin, District Manager Manukau Community Corrections was dressed in a red turban and said he felt like an Indian prince. Master of ceremonies Annu Sharma from Corrections kept the tempo upbeat as she introduced Ambika Krishnamoorthy who performed an Indian classical dance, while 10-year-old Radhika Rana entertained everyone with a Bollywood dance. The highlight though was a folk dance put up by the seniors from Shanti Nivas Charitable Trust that provides culturallyappropriate social support services to senior citizens of Indian and South Asian origin. Led by Nilima Venkat, the over 70-year-olds were surprisingly agile and nimble on their feet. The hot Indian vegetarian meal served had everyone queue up on a cold afternoon, including the police, some of whom were dressed in colourful saris and Indian regalia.

Clockwise from top left: Ambika Krishnamoorthy encourages Paul Rudkin, District Manager Manukau Community Corrections to strike an Indian Classical dance pose at the Diwali celebration hosted by Counties Manukau Police; Inspector Tracy Phillips (second left) photobombs the picture with (l-r) Shammi Prasad, Claire Thornton and Sergeant Mary Jane Riddle; Radhika Rana; Ambika Krishnamoorthy; Seniors from Shanti Nivas with District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers and District Manager Manukau Community Corrections Paul Rudkin (back centre). Public sculpture trail opens at Clevedon School

Clevedon School students have been working hard over the last few months creating unique sculptures to enhance their school environment. Ross, who was expelled from the National Party following a very acrimonious and public dispute, tweeted today: “I appreciate all the recent messages of support. I was well looked after by the fantastic people at Middlemore, and grateful for their care. “On medical advice I remain on leave, but have given National my proxy vote to ensure Botany continues to be represented

From Clevedon schools very own multi coloured world traveller signpost, inspired by the Dr Seuss story, Oh the Places You Will Go to an intricately designed taniwha to protect the school, there has been no limit to the students’ creativity. Some sculptures have been made using recycled materials, while others are interactive to help get passersby involved. You’ll even spot a kiwi who

or former Howick & Pakuranga Times reporter Linda Shackelford, being selected as a New Caledonia ambassador in New Zealand was an incredible surprise and an experience she will never forget. Earlier this month, Linda travelled to New Caledonia with five winners from around the world – China, Japan, Italy, France and Australia – who were selected as part of the Tourism New Caledonia competition ‘Caledonian Dream’ to explore the country. They were selected from more than 1600 entrants from around the world and explored the diverse country by sea, land, and air, travelling 800km in nine days. Every day of the nine day adventure was a surprise, with the ambassadors having no idea where they were going, or what they were doing. They were filmed throughout their journey and interviewed by local New Caledonian news channels, as locals watched on at every leg of their journey. Linda, who now runs boutique public relations agency, Expand PR, and supports a range of consumer, corporate and charity clients in New Zealand, says she was chosen for the trip for her media skills and is delighted she is able to use them to spread the word about New Caledonia in New Zealand. “Tourism New Caledonia reports a large number of visitors to New Caledonia each year from New Zealand, who choose the destination for many reasons – it’s close proximity to New Zealand (less than a threehour flight from Auckland), good healthcare, a variety of activities on offer and the luxury resorts,”

While it’s a bit more expensive than your average Pacific Island holiday, Linda says it’s worth splashing out to experience the five-star resorts, dining experiences, and enjoy adventures such as ziplining 90m above rolling hills, or taking a short flight off the mainland to a tropical island such as Ouvea or Iles Des Pins. “You’ve got to get out of Noumea and see all the sights and cultural delights of the archi-

New Caledonia is unique because it feels more like Europe, without the jetlag!” says Linda. “The food has a very strong French influence (think cheese, croissants, baguettes and red wine) combined with food locally sourced (taro, coconut, sweet potato, fish, etc. “I’ll definitely be going back – but first, I am looking forward to summer in New Zealand!”

Last Thursday (October 25) at Poppies Bookshop in Howick, Helen Brown, author, launched her latest book, Bono: the rescue cat who helped me find my way home. Around 30 people came to listen to her interesting life story and what inspired her to write her latest book. Diane Andrew was there to meet Helen, as it was Helen that helped her with the grief of losing her son Kurt five years ago. Diane got up and told her story of how after about 18 months of losing her son she simply wasn’t coping so well, and after a friend suggested to her to read Helen’s book, Cleo: How a small black cat helped heal a family, she felt that getting a pet

may give her something to focus on and help her on her grief journey. Although Diane was extremely emotional when telling her story, she assured us that getting her dog Hope has helped. It got her out exercising again and certainly gave her plenty to laugh about. “I was really excited when I saw the advertisement in the Howick and Pakuranga Times advertising that Helen Brown was going to be at Poppies to launch a new book,” said Diane. “She has been a true inspiration to me - as she too is a grieving mother so really understood my grief. Meeting her has been a real highlight, and what a neat lady. I am so grateful to Helen.”

Howick Village members At this time of year, at the AGM, the business owners and landlords of Howick Village elect an Executive Committee to help steer the direction of the Village for the forthcoming year and beyond. As chairperson I am delighted to announce the members of the new Executive. They are Ken Scott – Chair (101 Howick); Jenny Foster – Deputy Chair (Minos Pizza); Frith Jenkins – Secretary (Howick Village Optometrist); Katie Treneman – Treasurer (Paper Plus); Germukh Mann- Committee (Village Grocer); Tony Moores – Committee (Poppies Books); Barry O’Shaughnessy – Committee (The Good Home); Gerald Patterson – Committee (Helloworld); Leanne Steele – Committee (Life Pharmacy); Arjun Talwar – Committee (Bakers Delight); Steven Tong – Committee (Unichem Mainstreet Pharmacy) The members have elected excellent diversity on the committee; with a wide range of ethnicities, Howick business experience and a nice blend of gender. I am excited about the enthusiasm and positive approach exhibited by everyone at our first get together. Our role as a committee is to assist and guide the development of the

commercial interests of business people and businesses in Howick Village, through co-ordinated, structured and measurable communications, marketing, and economic development programmes. While doing this we must strive to maintain and develop Howick Village as a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for both locals and visitors A common misconception we do hear is that the Howick Village Association decides what type of businesses we have in the Village. Sadly, we don’t have control over this and that decision rests entirely with landlords and real estate businesses. We will always try to influence those decisions and we welcome suggestions from Howickians as to the types of businesses they would like to see in their Village. Please feel free in sharing your thoughts and suggestions with our committee members or the Village Manager, Jane Newberry at manager@ howickvillage.co.nz. We look forward to serving our community in making this great Village even greater. Ken Scott Chair, Howick Village Association

Village green meets golfing dream

Answers needed on Residency decision

Metlifecare unveils plan for New Zealand’s first retirement village integrated with golf course

M

etlifecare has announced its successful acquisition of 1.06ha of prime golf course land from the Pakuranga Golf Club, which comes in addition to 2.38ha purchased in May 2017. The total development area now stands at 3.44ha, paving the way for the development of New Zealand’s first retirement village with access to an 18-hole golf course. Speaking with investors on Friday, chief executive Glen Sowry said the expanded site would provide Metlifecare with the opportunity to develop a village unlike any other in the New Zealand market. “We’re very excited about this unique development opportunity,” says Sowry. “The village integration with Pakuranga Golf Club will be boundaryless, with the village green flowing through to the golfing green.” The expanded site will deliver an increased development yield of at least 74 additional units and beds, for a targeted total of 206 independent living apartments and 36 care beds, following Metlifecare’s awardwinning home care design model. The additional land has increased golf course frontage, improving the integration of the northwest facing site with the course. Settlement of the new parcel of land is due by May 2019 with development likely to commence later next year. Club president Steve Scott says the

deal has attractive upsides for both club members and future village residents. “This sale puts the club in a great position for the future years to come,” says Scott. “We look forward to continuing our positive relationship with Metlifecare.” Metlifecare has a great market for this new village on its doorstep – many of the club’s members have registered strong interest in the village which is expected to be open from 2021. Sowry says Metlifecare plans to invest around $180 million developing the site. Sowry says Metlifecare analysis suggests the list price for units in the

village will range from $600,000 to more than $1m. Design and consenting work is already underway, and the village will be completed in stages, allowing for flexibility of occupancy.

Expected timings for key stages are: ■ Lodgement of resource consent early 2019 ■ Construction to start late 2019 / early 2020 ■ First units completed 2021 The new site will boost Metlifecare’s development pipeline to just under 2000 units and beds across its 24 operational villages and five greenfield sites.

Every day in my Pakuranga electorate office my staff and I are focused on helping people. We try to provide assistance to anyone who walks through our door, gives us a call, or sends us an email, and we handle all manner of issues. We help people requiring social assistance, people trying to access a state house, people struggling to get good healthcare, and people seeking help with immigration, among the many other challenges people face. When working with those who need help with an immigration issue our advice is always consistent: follow the process, co-operate with Immigration NZ, and don’t break the law. It’s a simple recipe. I believe that good things come to those who work hard, and even in my short time so far as an MP I have seen that first-hand with constituents who make the effort to do things the right way. Sadly, I have also seen many deserving people turned away by Immigration NZ even after following the above recipe. These are hard-working, law-abiding people who want to make New Zealand their home and contribute to our community as best they can. But this week we learned about Karel Sroubek.

Simeon Brown

MP for Pakuranga He came to New Zealand on a false passport. He joined a notorious gang. He imported illegal drugs, was convicted, and is now serving a sentence in prison. Yet for some reason the Minister of Immigration, Iain Lees-Galloway, has granted Karel Sroubek Residency, something that many people covet and that I would argue deserve it far more. The Minister has so far refused to explain his decision. I feel for all the lawabiding immigrants in New Zealand who have played by the rules and worked incredibly hard to get here and make a contribution. They bring to our country the skills we need, and they want as much as any of us to make New Zealand a better place. Despite all that, a convicted criminal has jumped the queue ahead of them and gained something so many good people miss out on, often for some pretty trivial reasons. It really does beg the question why, and the Government has a responsibility to front up and explain. ■ Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

Tribute

Post founder farewelled The Times publishes the main excerpts from funeral celebrant Morrin Cooper’s notes from the service of Howick Post founder Shirley Coulter on Saturday. By Morrin Cooper

T

oday we come to honour the life of Isobel Shirley Coulter, known to us all as Shirley. Born in 1932 you won’t be surprised to learn that she was named after Shirley Temple. We also come to support you, Barbara as you were her family. Know our love and care is with you at this time. Shirley was born in Whitford, east Auckland, on January 15 in 1932. She was the only child of Arthur and Ruby. For her first eight years she lived happily on the family farm in Whitford where she briefly attended Whitford Brick School before moving to Howick District School when it opened in 1937. In 1940 the family moved to a farm in Swanson and Shirley attended Swanson School – her mode of transport being riding her horse. Shirley left primary school in 1945 having earned the prestigious title of Dux. She was a foundation student at Avondale College until the end of 1948, when she left to enter the work force and attend the University of Auckland part-time. In 1955 Shirley graduated with a Diploma in Journalism. Until then she had worked

Shirley Coulter, who established Howick’s first newspaper the Howick Post, was farewelled in a service in Henderson on Saturday. Photos supplied

in various secretarial jobs including Federated Farmers. The newly graduated Shirley moved to the village of Howick in 1955 to establish the Howick Post. My association with Shirley dates back to the 1960s when I became a member of the Howick Borough Council. I enjoyed many discussions with her, disseminating council news through her paper and appreciating her journalism skills. I was delighted with Shirley’s contribution to Howick because I was a strong believer in the importance of

having a local newspaper. It was around this time when she presented me with this instrument (trumpet), which was played by her father in a brass band. I believe it was 50 years old when it was given to me, so it would have had its 100 birthday by now. After a lengthy stint as editor and owner of the Howick local newspaper, Shirley moved on in 1973 to the Information Office at Auckland University where she was employed until 1980. Her working days were abruptly interrupted at this time when her mother

suffered a stroke and Shirley moved to Henderson to care for her mother. Sadly, some years later, her father also was the victim of a stroke and he too needed Shirley’s care. After her parents’ deaths, she stayed on in the family home until 2009 when she moved into her own apartment at Waitakere Gardens. This was a very happy move for Shirley and many of you here today have enjoyed her quick wit and her wonderful sense of humour. Shirley’s knowledge of literature was outstanding. Before her eyesight started troubling her, she was an avid speed reader, devouring several books a week. Her ability to recite verses of poetry and quotations was most impressive right up until just over a week ago. Other interests included crosswords, of course the cryptic kind, other word puzzles and music. She loved gardening and prior to moving into her apartment she always had a large vege patch which many neighbours and friends benefitted from. Animals always played a large part in Shirley’s life, especially cats, many of which she rescued. ■■ Morrin Cooper is the former Howick Borough Mayor.

Star of the Sea School Gala and Food Festival will be held on Saturday, November 3 from 10 am-2 pm at 14 Oakridge Way, Howick. Children are excited to be preparing for the annual Star of the Sea School Gala and are currently sorting goods inside one of the two 20ft containers. In the picture is Connor trying the new battery operated jeep, hoping his parents will bid for it in the silent auction. Just one of the amazing products on offer. Also available to bid on is a brand new fridge/ freezer. There will be plenty of stalls, games and rides for the children.

Brown wins in China

Kiwi ironman legend Cameron Brown, from Dannemora, claimed a win in last week’s Tri-Factor Series Quzhou International Half Ironman in China. “Lucky to have cool conditions and some rain (perfect kiwi weather) especially only a week after Kona and a lot of travelling to get here,” he wrote on Facebook. Brown, 46, was the oldest to have qualified in the pro field for the previous week’s Ironman World Championship in Hawai’i where he finished 22nd. His time in Kona of 8:25:30 was 6 minutes slower than his fastest ever time on the island - 8:19hr in 2005 - when he finished second.

ven as trees are being recklessly chopped down to create high density housing in Auckland, groups of volunteers are working hard to ensure Mangemangeroa Reserve—the lungs of east Auckland -are maintained. The Friends of Mangemangeroa were thrilled when Fritz Retief, a nature-loving employee with Auckland International Airport (AIAL), nominated them for an Auckland Airport staff grant. The Friends of Mangemangeroa are an environmentally friendly group supported by Forest and Bird, Rotary, schools as well as Auckland Council to replant, restore and maintain the bush. AIAL makes 30 grants of $1000 to schools and community groups across Auckland and provides and an opportunity each year for staff members to name the causes they would like to support. Fritz, a senior health and safety business partner who has been a part of a tramping club for more than 21 years and knows a number of trampers including Howick Local Board member John Spiller, says, “Having worked

with a wide cross-section of groups across all ages and ethnicities at the scenic reserve I believe the work they do is fantastic! “I nominated them so that so they can continue their dedicated work to restore and protect the native bush in the Mangemangeroa Valley Reserve.” Spiller, Howick Local Board’s Environment portfolio lead, says, “The Howick Local Board views the Mangemangeroa reserve as one of the premier recreation reserves in the Howick ward and is thrilled that AIAL have voted to grant $1000

towards enhancement projects for this special place. “I am particularly pleased that the donated funds will be put towards protecting newly planted trees and shrubs that could otherwise be damaged or destroyed by pests. “It is great to get a new community partner in AIAL who have acknowledged the importance of assisting the regeneration of eco-sourced native plants within the reserve—which will in turn enhance the experience for the wider community.” Allan Riley, chairman of the Friends of Mangeman-

geroa, who has over the years propelled the restoration work that has seen the bush edge extend through pioneer species planting, says, “The generous donation from AIAL has paid for plant protectors which we are currently placing around trees planted this season. “Plants enclosed within these green corflute protectors survive better in harsh weather conditions. “They are less likely to suffer damage from the pukekos which pull out the young plants to get to the worms in the ground, and hares which love to ‘chomp’ them off.”

Time for big changes

I’m the president of the East Auckland branch of the Auckland movement. Our organisation is a new group of ratepayers and residents who want change in the way Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) operates, the business model, and to get a new mayor. Auckland has been plagued with bad leadership, and management for years. Now it’s coming home to roost. We need new blood, not washedup old politicians and yes men or women who are in it for what they can get. We need doers, and people to put commonsense, and honour, back to serving the public. Council is self-serving, and those running it are into empire-building and would never last in the private sector. The waste, rate increases, taxes,

now fuel tax, and over-spending, over-payment to some council staff, and endless bylaws has to stop. It’s out of control. Last year the ACC wasted and blew the following, just to mention a few: ■ Paying over a million dollars every day in interest-only loans. ■ $45 million in PR staff. The biggest newsroom in the country. ■ Auckland Transport spent $11 million on its office fit-out. $126,000 of that was on flash taps. ■ $1,100,000 on international flights, many first class. ■ Ratepayers are paying Phil Goff $1000 per day, every day of the week. ■ Council has borrowed over $12 billion dollars using their legislative power, and your properties as collateral. The list goes on, and on. And Goff has done nothing to rein in, except spend and waste. In fact, Goff’s made it a lot worse under his watch. Council (and Goff) is doing nothing at all to protect the people of Auckland. It’s lowering the standard of living for everyone.. Endless rate increases, compliance charges, poor management skills, and borrowing. The movement knows of a number of older people being rated out of their homes. It’s also aware teachers, police, are moving for the same reasons. ACC has to be put on a leash and be cleaned out, starting at the top and going down. If we don’t, it will just get worse. Dame Ann Hercus to visit Howick genealogistsWould you like a year of The Howick genealogists are extremely thrilled to be welcoming Dame Ann Hercus to their meeting on Saturday, November 10 at 1.30 pm at the St. Andrews Church Centre, Howick. Dame Ann and her husband John have spent the last thirty years, on and off, researching different aspects of their family history and have self-published two books. But the last ten years have been spent researching the rare family surname and its medieval origins (and exploring other similar names to see if they were one family or not.) It was not long until they discovered that their surname had five other modern variations such as Herkes, Harcus, Harkes, Harkess and

Following a month long process in search of a Youth MP for Pakuranga, a speech competition was hosted by Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga at his office recently. Rhea Iyer, Hayley Xie and John Sibanda from Macleans College and Te Haua Taua from Pakuranga College were the four shortlisted candidates who spoke about things that matter to them and what drives them in their desire to be a Youth MP The speech competition hosted at Brown’s office also had Councillor Sharon Stewart and Chair of Howick Local Board David Collings in attendance. Finally it was Hayley who was selected as the Youth MP to represent Pakuranga next year at the Parliament. Hayley spoke about the local Pakuranga community she has been raised in and how her community has looked after her and her family. “It has encouraged me to become the person I am today, with a strong sense of belonging and a selfless desire to give back,” she said. hen born and bred Howickian, Blaise Clotworthy was 10-years-old, he told his grandmother he one day wanted to be paid to tap dance. Now 15 years later, Blaise will tap dance his way across the stage in the musical debut of New Zealand’s iconic soap opera - Shortland Street the Musical. The former Macleans College head boy says the show is a celebration of who we are as New Zealanders. “It’s a celebration of an absolute popular culture icon for Kiwis, focussing on the original 1992 series of Shortland Street and we are working with the original iconic moments.” He says the audience will enjoy the famous storylines of humanitarian Dr Hone Ropata arriving in town and ruffling the feathers of a young, playboy Chris Warner, the iconic love triangle between Lionel Skeggins,

Kirsty Knight and Greg Feeney and when bratty teen Rachel McKenna gets struck by lightning. And he says even those who are not fans of the soap will find something to love in show. “They have some really universal themes that I think everybody can get behind.” Blaise will be part of the ensemble playing an injured All Black, a nurse and a tap dancing muffin – but he’s keeping tight lipped on the context behind that particular part. This is Blaise’s fourth show with the Auckland Theatre Company and says working on this Kiwi classic has felt like “coming home”. Now a full time performer, Blaise credits his love of musical theatre to his time at Macleans College and one of his teachers, Lesley Shepherd. “The experiences I had at high school really forged my path as a performer,” he says. Blaise says with the help of

Lesley as his mentor, he was introduced to the magic of musical theatre and was given opportunities to work with the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ to kick start his career in the arts. From humble beginnings in Howick, Blaise has gone on to perform in an array of musical theatre shows as well as a quick acting stint on the real Shortland Street TV drama. Blaise says he is proud to be part of an all-Kiwi story, something he says isn’t seen often enough in theatre. “There needs to be more of an emphasis on telling our own stories and putting those stories in a commercial space,” he says. “Seeing a big commercial musical about Kiwi stories and Kiwi accents and everything is a great experience for the modern NZ audience.” ■■ The musical opens at the ASB Waterfront on November 17 as part of the Auckland Theatre Company’s 2018/19 season.

I would like to thank everybody for floral tributes, cards, letters and meals that we received after the passing of Des. A huge thank you to everyone that attended his service. Des would have been truly humbled. To my family, friends and wonderful neighbours who helped make his life during his last year very happy and memorable, thank you. Please accept this as a personal acknowledgement.

Ioane responds strongly

HPCC claim good win HPCC takes the win over North Shore in Jeff Crowe Cup Limited Overs competition

Agnew’s Angle

after playing second fiddle to their opponents in the first spell. With a father and mother having represented Samoa and the Silver Ferns respectively and younger brother, Rieko, an entrenched All Black star with 22 tries in 21 tests, Akira Ioane is blessed with wonderful genes. He was the outstanding attacking forward of the 2014 World Series champion NZ sevens team and was a member of the Under-20 national side that won the world crown in Italy. Yet despite having Jerome Kaino as a Blues role model, Akira had failed to bend his back and do the hard yakka the All Black selectors required of him. Consequently he wasn’t chosen for the current tour of Japan, England, Ireland and Italy. However his tremendous workaholic performance for Auckland before 20,130 non-paying Eden Park fans suggests his best years are ahead of him, starting next year with the Blues in combination with Dalton Papalii and Blake Gibson. Meanwhile, while Sam Cane nurses a broken neck, his No 7 starting replacement Ardie Savea made every post a winner in the All Blacks Yokohama victory against Australia on Sunday.

An explosive runner, Savea played third fiddle behind the rugged Cane and splendid Matt Todd last year but has since shown he can play all three loose forward positions. With Brodie Retallick making a welcome return after a long injury break and workaholic Scott Barrett progressing nicely in his absence, it could be a good time to reduce a jaded Sam Whitelock’s game time. Whitelock’s locking partnership with Retallick is one of the keys to the All Blacks’ 90 per cent success rate under Hansen, but his body is showing the wear and tear of a long, hard season. First-five Beauden Barrett appreciated fullback Damian McKenzie’s role as another first receiver, thereby relieving him of some decision making. Barrett scored a great blindside try against the Wallabies following a snappy Rieko Ioane break before returning the favour. Right wing Ben Smith also had a strong game, making sharp breaks and scoring a splendid try. However I still prefer him at fullback where he’s a master at coping with the up-andunder at which England and Ireland are so adept. ne of the most pleasing aspects about Auckland’s thrilling 40-33 extra time Mitre 10 Cup rugby premiership victory against old foes Canterbury on Saturday was the brilliant performance of Akira Ioane. In emphatically responding to the national selectors’ call to lift his work rate, the 23-year-old, 113kg No 8 spearheaded Auckland’s remarkable comeback after they had trailed 7-20 at halftime. At his most dangerous with his powerful bursts from the back of the scrum, he combined low slung solo runs with timely offloads that stretched Canterbury’s renowned defence to breaking point. With Auckland lucky not to have been relegated from the premiership last year, it looked as though Alama Ieremia had accepted a poison chalice in taking over as head coach this year. Instead he instilled discipline and with the assistance of Sir Graham Henry, Filo Tiatia, Tai Lavea and Mike Casey, developed a team culture that carried them to a premiership victory against a province that had won nine of the previous 10 titles. Although renowned for their classy backs, it was the muchimproved Auckland forwards who set the foundation for the comeback

Marie Raos Ray White HPCC captain Bill Walsh won the toss and invited visitors North Shore to bat. After an early setback with a wicket falling in the second over, North Shore’s top order battled away against a very tight Howick attack with Donovan Grobbelaar, Matt McEwan and Rudi Botadra all capturing early wickets. Botadra made the key breakthrough when Daniel Young took a good catch to dismiss Ronnie Hira who had looked very solid for 37. After that it was a matter of time with spinners Adam Jones 3/23, Rowan Naude and Bill Walsh 1/12 all conceding less than 3 runs per over. McEwan 2/39 and Grobbelaar 2/31 cleaned up the tail. Howick’s fielding was, as always, right on the mark and North Shore was dismissed for 157 in 45 overs. By the time Howick Pakuranga’s openers arrived at the crease there was a threat of rain in the air so Bill Walsh and Daniel Young tried to settle in but the first wicket fell at 14 when Young was caught off McKenzie. The four teams race for a trophy and bragging rights. There is both a boys

Howick’s Steph Skilton (white strip) challenges Lily Bray of Canterbury United Pride for possession in Round Seven of the 2018 National Women’s League competition at Times photo Wayne Martin McLennan Park, Papakura.

Auckland Football have ended the Canterbury United Pride’s unbeaten run in the National Women’s League. Auckland, the defending champions, came into the match looking to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to the Northern Lights on Tuesday night and they did so with a commanding 3-1 win over the Pride at McLennan Park in Papakura. The Canterbury United Pride, who had won their first six matches to start the National Women’s League season, went down for the first time in what was a re-match from last year’s final. Auckland winger Paige Satchell set up a goal and scored another as the seven-time champions delivered their best performance of the 2018 season. The victory means Auckland and the Northern Lights, who defeated WaiBOP 3-0 today, move to within four points of the Canterbury United Pride at the top of the table.
