Armistice Day, 100 years on Howick RSA vice president Judith Chatwin was among those installing 100 crosses on Stockade Hill to commemorate Armistice Day on Sunday. Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN captured this shot. It marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. At 11am on November 11 this year, Aotearoa New Zealand will mark the centenary of the armistice that ended

the First World War in 1918. On that day 100 years ago, after four years of brutal conflict, war finally gave way to peace. The First World War had taken a huge toll on New Zealand. Around 100,000 New Zealanders – or 10 per cent of the population at the time – served overseas during the war, and more than 18,000 lost their lives. Families and communities back home felt these losses acutely.

According to ww100.govt.nz/ armistice: “When news of the Armistice reached our shores it was met with thanksgiving, hopefulness and joyous noise. The Armistice centenary gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the loss and trauma of the First World War, as well as reflect on peace and hope at the centenary of its closure. As well as joining together in remembrance, we can recapture the

relief and jubilation of that important day a century ago.” Sunday’s event is organised by the Howick Local Board and the Howick Returned Services Association (RSA) • 10.45am – Parade falls in • 10.55am – Parade marches from Mellons Bay Road off to Stockade Hill • 11am – Service starts on Stockade Hill More Armistice celebrations, pages 2 & 5

s primary school teachers threaten another strike on November 12, the Ministry of Education made a recent announcement of their new plan to hire more than 850 additional teachers from overseas. The plan is to target more than 6000 overseas-based teachers in a new campaign with extra funding, to meet an expected shortfall next year. Education Minister Chris Hipkins

says that the Coalition Government is committed to an extra $10.5 million, on top of the $29.5m already announced late last year to ramp up teacher recruitment initiatives and increase funding for schools - bringing funding to $40m this year. There will be easier access of up to $3000 per teacher finder’s fee to help schools offset recruitment costs, he says. “We’ve also increased our overseas recruitment target for 2019 from 400 up to 900 and enlisted

further recruitment agency support for schools. We’re focussed on bringing New Zealand-trained teachers home, while also looking for other teachers from countries with qualifications similar to ours.” Hipkins says that Immigration NZ is working with the Education Ministry and has directly emailed 6000 overseas teachers who’ve registered an interest in working here. “A social media campaign targeting these groups is also underway and a campaign targeting New Zea-

land-trained teachers working overseas will follow soon.” David Ellery, principal of Somerville Intermediate, cautions that the quality of the new recruits from overseas will be critical. “Simply filling numbers won’t enhance the quality of education that our community expects from their schools. There were issues with quality in the last big overseas recruitment drive back in the 1990s,” says Ellery, who has been with the ➤ Turn to Page 5 school 23 years.

One hundred years ago, Armistice Day marked the signing of the agreement that ended World War I. On Sunday November 18, NZ Warbirds Association will commemorate this event and the sacrifice of those who served by opening the doors of their hangars to display a huge variety of flying warbird aircraft from all eras. The day will also feature flying displays featuring a variety of ex-military training and fighter aircraft. For the first time several warbird aircraft that are currently under restoration at Ardmore will also be on display to the public.

$3m funding for Erebus memorial significant majority came from the greater Auckland region, and all the crew, so for accessibility purposes – and for families of overseas passengers – Auckland seems like a good logical place. “Our group is hoping an appropriate site will be soon confirmed that already has adequate parking and toilets so that the allocated $3m can all go into the memorial itself, and not into infrastructure.” Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga, welcomed the announcement.

fter three years of advocacy work, led by Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh, the Erebus National Memorial group commends the announcement this week that the Government is allocating $3 million for an Auckland-based memorial. A national memorial for the 1979 Mt Erebus air accident of Air New Zealand McDonnellDouglas DC-10 ZK-NZP, Flight TE901 has been sadly lacking for a long time, Dr Waugh said. The Mt Erebus accident with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is New Zealand’s worst peacetime disaster. At the time it was the world’s fourth worst aviation accident, and is still the worst aviation accident in the Southern Hemisphere. “New Zealand as a nation continues to be profoundly affected by the tragedy and it is a pastoral and public oversight that nothing has yet been done to establish a suitable national memorial to the Mt. Erebus accident victims, especially for the many families involved,” Dr Waugh said. Other more recent disasters have their own national memorials, including for the Pike River accident and Christchurch earthquake victims. “Our group, which includes Erebus families, has been working for three years on the national memorial for the Erebus accident,” Dr Waugh told the Times. “Many of our meetings have been held at my church offices in Botany. It has been most encouraging having Government support and we have been working with the Ministry of Culture and Heritage on the complex processes to ensure the very best result. “While we are told the memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary in late 2019, we are being assured it will be ready for dedication in the first half of 2020.” When asked about the Auckland site Dr Waugh commented, “The exact site has not yet been made public, but I am pleased it will be in Auckland as many Erebus families have said they would like the memorial to be elegant, accessible and not in a cemetery. “Of the Erebus passengers a

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, November 8, 2018 — 5

Armistice Day this Sunday is a time for us to remember the sacrifices of so many.

Remembering the fallen Local historian Alan La Roche continues his series marking the Howick district’s 170th anniversary. He focuses on some of those who served in World War I from Howick and Pakuranga. Robert Allan (Dufty) Bell

Enlistment in 1917 [NZH 6/3/1917 pg6]. Pakuranga farmer, served in Egypt. He was one of the last groups of soldiers to go into battle on their horses. Dufty was with the Territorials in 1914 and was sent to patrol Browns Bay as part of Auckland’s defences, as well as keeping an eye on the Puhoi German settlers, when all “Germans” were under surveillance. Later in 1914 he was sent to Palestine. He was infected with malaria and was carried on a camel, then a donkey cart to hospital. Dufty owned “Hope Farm” at Pakuranga and was the last farmer to harvest oats and wheat in Pakuranga in 1947. No. 56532.

Overseas teachers wanted by MoE ➤ From Page 1 “I think that new overseas recruits will face the same living cost challenges that other Auckland teachers face so that they may be inclined to go to other regions. This will exacerbate the problem for Auckland even further and provides no guarantee of addressing the acute shortages in Auckland. “My understanding is that if school use a commercial recruitment agency to source teachers, then they can claim $3000 back from the MoE,” says Ellery. “The trend for people going into teacher training is on a downward trajectory, which is concerning, especially when the attrition rate in the first five years in significant.

“Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to have been much forward thinking into teacher recruitment, remuneration and conditions, and we are again faced with playing catch-up. The schools and the children are left to face the brunt of the situation.” However Michael Williams, principal of Pakuranga College and president of Secondary Principals’ Association, doesn’t agree. He says the only option open to the government is to try and find overseas teachers to fill the gap. “The ministry now has a planning tool which is helping them quantify the size of the teacher shortage. “The measures announced are really just an extension and refine-

The data now shows that we will be at least 200 secondary teachers short and 850 primary teachers short for 2019. “The underlying problem is that we don’t train enough teachers in New Zealand, because not enough people want to go into teaching. The MoE’s new TV recruitment campaign is good and a significant pay rise would help,” he says. Big smiles draw Riffy to Bruce McLaren It was the big smiles that greeted her when Riffat Jahan-Khan was shown around the hospital at Bruce McLaren Retirement Village that conrmed her hopes that she was about to land her perfect job. “It has got such a nice vibe about the place, I got a really good feeling,” says Riffy, as she is affectionately nicknamed. “I had a good look around the hospital section and everybody was smiling and greeting me and stopping to say hello and I think that says volumes for a workplace.” Riffy is the new Clinical Manager at Bruce McLaren overseeing the hospital, resthome and special care unit within Ryman Healthcare’s Howick retirement village. After 15 years working out and about in the community and lately travelling a patch that covered the greater Auckland region up to Whangarei, Riffy had been looking for a role where she could remain based in the workplace. With her home and all her family living in nearby Pakuranga Riffy was thrilled when the opportunity came up to work so close to home. “I’m looking forward to being in this setting just in the one place where I can build special relationships with people. “It’s nding that ‘feel good’ nursing where you can sit down and talk to people about their journey and where they have come from and where they are going. “And I get a sense I will be able to do that with staff as well and not just the residents. “It makes you feel really good when someone can stop and say hello to people.” In her previous role Riffy realised that her passion really lay in helping older people with their health. “I get a lot of job satisfaction because I nd they appreciate the work I do for them and I get the sense that I have made some difference in their lives. “I nd through talking to them about their life journey I learn things through their experiences. “And they are still so full of

It’s all about relationships, says new Clinical Manager Riffy Jahan-Khan. energy and fun, so that was what made caring for older adults so attractive to me. “Being able to help them live full and meaningful lives gives me immense pleasure.” Much of Riffy’s work will also involve talking to relatives of residents and to be successful there, she says, building relationships with them is just as important. “Communication is the absolute key and if we’ve said something is going to happen with a person’s

care, following up and making sure it has happened and keeping their loved ones in the loop is absolutely vital.” Riffy says there is a special responsibility for those residents who don’t have family. “We feel even more responsibility if they don’t have that support person or someone giving advice. “We always want to be in the position where we can say we have done the absolute best for that person.”

Riffy says striving for the best in care is something Ryman makes a top priority, and she admires the company’s overriding philosophy of ‘It’s got to be good enough for Mum’. “My family and cultural background has always taught me to respect elders and give them the time and appreciation that they deserve, so that philosophy is something that really resonates with me.” She had always been impressed

with the presentation of Ryman facilities she had visited with her other job and now she can vouch for the standard of operations within the village. “There is huge respect for Ryman in the retirement sector and I’m so excited to have joined the team.” Bruce McLaren Retirement Village offers independent living in an apartment, assisted living in a serviced apartment, and resthome, hospital and dementia care.

Success for locals at Zonta awards T

he focus of this year’s Zonta awards was `Say No to Violence’ campaign with special a special emphasis on reducing child marriages. “Over 650 million women worldwide were married before their 18th birthday – this means many girls not reaching their potential in other fields,” said New Zealand Zonta governor Souella Cumming at a Zonta award ceremony hosted recently at the Howick Little Theatre. Even as Zonta gets ready to celebrate 100 years of service next year, the awards evening acknowledged those committed to service, with a host of awards for the youth and

more mature workers. Zontian Robyn Fox received the Service Appreciation award; while Mary Gate from Bellyful was given the Founder’s Day Award. Inka Pleiss from Howick College won the Young Women in Public Affairs 2018 award. Governor Souella presented the National and International Award for Young Women in Public Affairs to Sara Khatau. Howick College student Harsimran Hundal as well as Macleans College student Yuna Otaki won the Year 12 Leadership awards. The President’s Scholarship went to Catherine Taylor for supporting a woman over 25 in tertiary studies.

Speech contest highlights ethical standards Howick Rotary held its annual Brian Hanlon Howick College 4 – Way Test Speech Contest for year 9 and 10 students last Tuesday evening. Finalists Amelia Walmsley, Brooke Scully, Lily Moore and Ridhi Singh presented some very topical and thought-provoking speeches to a large audience of their families, college organising and supporting teachers and Rotary club guests and members. Toastmasters organisation members Marlene Krone, Stephen Budai and Sean Walton were on hand to judge the speeches. The speeches were judged on the basis of points awarded for content, organisation and delivery with the overall winner being the

provided the contestants with some adjudication comments and remarked on the “very high standard that the girls had achieved”. He went on to say that of the

four years that he has been involved, the standard this year was the highest he had seen. The contest is held annually and this year was organised by college teachers Tom Stacey and Ann Botha in conjunction with Rotary’s Youth Committee Director Rob Mouncey. It commemorates former long serving Rotarian and past President Brian Hanlon’s contribution to the community and to education. Rotary President Dave Wylie said, “The contest is one of the highlights of the Rotary year particularly in relation to the many youth support projects that the club undertakes and it is really pleasing to see the confidence that these young women demonstrated

in presenting their speeches.” The awards for the night included gift vouchers from Paper Plus in Howick with the winner also receiving the Brian Hanlon Trophy. Katie Treneman, owner of Paper Plus, said she was really happy to support Rotary “in their efforts to encourage the development of young people in the community”. President Dave Wylie concluded the evening by saying, “Rotary people are involved in many different community projects while having a great social time together so anyone interested in becoming a member should contact membership director Ian Fox, phone 021 662 896 or email ian@fox.co.nz.

Aaron says, “Music can put you in a time, a place and remind you of a memory or evoke a feeling, creating the story you want to be immersed in.” He believes that in this Netflix age, “theatre has to be an ‘experience’, breaking the fourth wall and allowing the audience to get up close to the performance.” West End & Broadway features a cast of seasoned musical veterans working alongside up and coming junior performers, like 13-year-old Melody LiuWebster. When contacted, Auckland Council Head of Operational Management and Maintenance Agnes McCormack told the Times: “The flying fox at Macleans Park has been disabled with the trollies removed from both cables. During an inspection by the contractors it was identified that the cables were showing signs of wear and a decision was made to close the flying fox for health and safety reasons. New cables have been ordered and will be replaced by the end of the week.” Meanwhile reader Vicky Williamson from Bucklands Beach sent us this note: “I’m delighted to inform you and the public that the flying fox in Macleans Park has been reinstated today (Tuesday, November 6). Community news takes a big hit By Nick Krause

N

ews this week that Stuff (previously Fairfax) is considering cutting 19 journalists’ jobs just before Christmas is a multi-levelled tragedy. These journalists were the only connection to their local communities. The looming executioner’s axe is already being felt in our community here in east Auckland. Local news is the casualty in this slow-moving train wreck. Sadly it’s a trend being seen in other parts of Auckland where this Australian-owned company is abandoning the communities by sacking most of its reporters. It follows the failed merger of Stuff and NZME.

The Times is independent. We’re locally owned – 100 per cent. Our commitment to news and advertising hasn’t changed. In fact we’re picking up our game and bringing you more, and it’s better. Our advertising very much relies on this wonderful local content, much like the independent title the Pohutukawa Coast Times in Beachlands. We’ve noticed local content in our competitor paper – the Eastern Courier – has all but disappeared. Last week there were no local stories, just a few local photos way back in the paper. The week before we counted two stories. This week was no different – there was not a single local news story. That’s not good enough.

Building Fine Homes

The Times remains strong in this community and our strong local news and advertising content is important to us. RNZ reported on Tuesday Stuff is considering axing 19 jobs as it squeezes its community titles. Staff was told of the proposal, which affects 13 of its Auckland and Northland titles. It’s understood 15 reporter and four news director jobs could be made redundant. Staff were told three senior reporter roles could be introduced to cover west Auckland, the North Shore, south and east Auckland and Northland. Should the proposal go ahead, it’s understood the staff would made redundant just before Christmas, RNZ said.

public safety is a priority. “Every Thursday we discard our spa pool water, then clean and super-chlorinate the pool to kill off bacteria. Last month’s test for Legionella returned a negative result, which means the bacteria was not present in the spa pool.” On Friday, immediately upon notification that Legionella had been detected, the spa pool was closed and a second round of super-chlorination and cleaning carried out. “Further testing was undertaken today, and the pool will remain closed until we get the results of that test, which could take up to 10 days.” The rest of the facilities at Lagoon Pool and Leisure Centre are unaffected and remain open. “This is a one-off situation. Collab a boon for Asian culture By Therese Henkin

I

n a successful cultural collaboration between Farm Cove Intermediate and Wakaaranga Primary recently, students got to learn more about Asian culture. The Chinese Day hosted at Farm Cove Intermediate saw dozens of students taking part in their choice of origami, calligraphy, traditional Chinese fan dancing and waist drum dancing. Farm Cove assistant principal Tamara Jones says the Chinese Day is part of a wider plan to help educate and instil in students an appreciation for Asian culture and cuisine. The Chinese Day was run over three sessions giving every student across both schools the opportunity to learn something about the Chinese culture. Farm Cove Intermediate and Wakaaranga Primary applied for a grant from the Asia New Zealand Foundation which gives schools the opportunity to receive funding for holding an event that enables their students to experience Asian cultural activities. Jones says 17 per cent of the Farm Cove school community identify as Chinese, with many more identifying as other Asian ethnicities. “We like to celebrate culture and diversity in our school, as does Wakaaranga, and we want to ensure that students right through to intermediate learn to appreciate and embrace all people,” she says. This year Farm Cove and Wakaaranga decided to team up and share resources to help sustain the Mandarin programme in both

schools. “In high schools there has been a drop in numbers of students wanting to learn another language so this is a way to get them interested again,” says Wakaaranga teacher,

Michelle Moth. Moth says it’s also important for students to value a culture that is so prominent in their school community. This programme helps to create

a seamless understanding of Asian culture and cuisine right through primary and intermediate, she says. As well as the Chinese days and a shared Mandarin language aide, Chinese cooking classes have been

offered for the last three terms. “We are working to find way of sustaining this Mandarin programme because one off activities isn’t enough to establish a good understanding,” Jones says.

Don’t miss out! Especially for those living in the east, EastLife is published on the first week of each month.

THIS MONTH EastLife has a spring in its step! That’s because we feature two local entrants aiming for medals at the NZ Garden & Flower Show and, of course, there’s a dash of new season fashions too. There’s a fusion of fresh flavours from cooking cousins, May Chen and Enna Ye, who potted a place in this year’s My Kitchen Rules New Zealand while our Q&A hears from a man who sings but not necessarily for his supper! Copies are available from locations across the district – visit eastlife.co.nz for pickup sites. An e-edition is also available.

t 10 years old, Alex Blong has seen more of the world than some adults. And it’s all thanks to a deck of cards and a unique mind sport. Alex is one of fewer than 30 Kiwi kids who play the Pokemon Trading Card Game (Pokemon TCG) competitively. And this year he has attended international competitions in Sydney, Brazil and America where he met and competed against players from across the world. “You’d be amazed at how huge these international competitions are. And how seriously these kids take the game,” says Alex’s mum Sarah Blong. “At first I just thought it was going to be a very expensive hobby, then I realised the card game actually requires lots of strategic thinking, mathematical knowledge and also builds a wide vocab.” Sarah says she also knows of kids who have learnt to read by playing the game. Every weekend Alex and a few other local kids join together to play together in league challenges hosted by two local venues - Bay Dragon Botany and Spellbound in Highland Park.

Alex Blong spends most of his free time working on strategies and game plans to take with him overseas to Times photo Therese Henkin compete in international Pokemon TCG competitions.

“I love this game because it really challenges me and there are always new strategies to learn,” says Alex. Alex and his mum are hoping to encourage more kids to get involved in Pokemon TCG so that New Zealand Players have a larger community to compete against. Alex, who has recently moved out of the junior league and into the senior league, has only been playing competi-

tively for little more than one year. Earlier this year he was the highest ranked junior in Oceania and went on to rank second in Oceania by the end of the season. Alex went on to qualify for three out of four of the major international championships with all expenses paid. “Players earn points by playing in league challenges, those children who are ranked in the

top 8 in Oceania (NZ, Australia and Asia) get travel awards,” says Sarah. “These allow players to attend the four International Pokemon events held in the Oceania, North America, South America and Europe across the season.” Alex will be heading back to Sao Paulo, Brazil again this month to compete in the first international competition of the season.

The Skye’s the ultimate limit! By Jim Allnatt

S

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club’s Skye Bowden has played her first official game for the Hearts. Photo supplied

eventeen-year-old Skye Bowden made her official Auckland Hearts debut in the Super Smash Cricket T20 Tournament at Lincoln last week against Central Districts. Skye has played for Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club since she was 10, starting in the Under 12 soft ball grade and moved quickly up through the grades into the premier side of which she has been a member for three years. Skye’s talents as a medium pace out-swing bowler and all round batsman were recognised at a very early age and she has represented Auckland

in Under 14, Under 15, Under 18 and Under 21 before joining the wider Hearts squad last season. It has always seemed to be only a matter of time before Skye became the first of the current Howick Pakuranga Premier Women’s Xl to become a fully fledged Hearts player and, after being 12th man for the first three games in Lincoln, she was selected to play. Skye said, “I love playing for the Hearts as you learn so much from all the players and it’s really challenging”. Skye is grateful to her father Dan for his encouragement and coaching. “He’s always

been there especially when things are tough.” Skye also plays indoor cricket so she doesn’t have an off season and excels in the sport too. She plays Super League and after representing New Zealand in the age grades, played for the New Zealand Women’s team in the World Cup at Dubai this year. Asked how the two sports fitted in with each other. “That by playing indoor is to play all year round and indoor helps with my eye-hand coordination because everything happens so quickly and I have learned to play more aggressively,” said Skye.

Eastern Busway light rail

Transport Minister Phil Twyford has recently mentioned the possibility of light rail being built to Botany from the airport as part of the Government’s light rail plans for Auckland. With Auckland Transport in the process of building a busway from Panmure to Botany, it would make far more sense to instead build light rail along this route, which could then connect with a light rail line to the airport. Light rail has far greater appeal than buses and is more complementary to the urban environment, and by building light rail between Panmure, Botany and the airport, east Auckland will at long last have a decent, fast,

Macleans Primary has great learning environment We were saddened to read the article alleging bullying at Macleans Primary (Times, November 1). We have found the school to be a great learning environment, full of hard-working dedicated teachers and senior staff, who genuinely care for the well being of our children who go there. We are confident the school will take what steps they can to ascertain

what happened, and to continue to provide a safe and supportive place for our children.

Heather and Matt

Well done that man!

The management and groundkeeper of Somerville Intermediate should be praised and congratulated for the way they present and maintain the road frontage and grounds of the school. It contrasts sharply with adjacent publicly-maintained berms and some of the private berms and gardens in nearby roads. Perhaps Mayor Goff and some of his overpaid city managers should be invited to see what can be achieved by a bit of good management and care.

The entry into Le Quesnoy was something to be very proud of.

Let’s have a great role in remembering

The Promenade, 1 Ara Tai, Half Moon Bay. Phone 533 0950. JH14054-v5

In the last week or so, there’s a focus on New Zealand’s men who fought in a war that was not of their making and gave their lives to uphold peace and protect those being bullied. Such sacrifices need to be remembered and honoured, especially for their families who have to live with the loss. For those who returned to NZ, the horrors of war and killing was etched in their memories for life and they never want to talk about it. My husband and I were in Europe in the middle of September and we went to a lot of war grave sites – for him to look up the graves of his relations who died there serving in the war. We also visited the war museums. In visiting the war museums, I was very impressed and proud of the New Zealanders who, with their number 8 wire

mentality, did incredible things to outwit the enemy. The entry into Le Quesnoy was something to be very proud of, which NZ history never mentioned - ask any Kiwi today and most would show deep ignorance of this. Ask around about the Wellington Tunnel and you can expect another show of ignorance. After going to these places where Kiwis were totally involved in saving the lives of friends and repelling the enemy, I came home with the pride that just about burst me open. The NZ government should speak to the French government about having museums built to honour our fallen heroes – the museum at Vimy Ridge was built to honour the Canadian soldiers. Our young people should be told what happened in the war and how our heroes gave their lives even when the war was not created by them.

Photo supplied

The families of our heroes should be encouraged to share any information they hold of their beloved son/uncle/ brother/relation etc. Quite a few of those in the war graves cemetery were between 15 to 19 years of age so there’s an understanding of the sacrifice they made. At the Vimy Ridge War Museum, Canadian young people were prepared to serve as tourist guides in the War Museum to tell tourists the horrors of war, the sacrifices the soldiers made and the after effects on their families. Perhaps NZ can talk to the French government for our young people to have a role in France to honour our fallen heroes and our young people can be helped to understand the futility of war, the needless sacrifice of lives and in the process encourage the rest of the world to look for a better alternative.

On Sunday November 11, Auckland families and friends are organising a Walk 2 D’Feet Motor Neurone Disease. This is an annual event which helps to raise funds to offer free support to people who have MND and also their carers. This is such a debilitating disease and not well funded by the government. hen 19-year-old Jessica Drummond walked the streets of Thailand and Cambodia last year, she realised how lucky she was to have grown up the way she did. She was fresh out of Pakuranga College with an eagerness to learn more about the world, when she made contact with Child Rescue NZ to take part in a mission trip. Now she says she couldn’t imagine a more life-changing experience. Child Rescue NZ operates under the international organisation Destiny Rescue and works to find children trapped in the sex trade and offer them the choice to leave through education, counselling and safe housing. Jessica spent two weeks volunteering in Rescue and Prevention homes, visiting the training and employment centres where girls are set up with the skills to enter meaningful career pathways and observing the confronting reality of the red light district. “I think you never really understand the impact of sex trafficking until you see it with your own eyes,” Jessica says. “I watched girls much younger than myself walking the streets wearing hardly any clothes, working in dodgy bars and brothels. “Behind the smiles of these girls you could see the brokenness.” Child Rescue NZ Auckland

manager Stacey Mitchell also went on the trip and says she watched Jess come home with the determination and passion for bringing freedom to children who deserve to be kids again. “Jess seemed to grow this compassion and vision for vulnerable children that was slowly burning brighter.” Stacey says it is estimated around one million children are in the sex trade or pornography worldwide. She says often girls have no way out even if the door has been left open for them because they lack the skills, education or support to make a change. Child Rescue desperately needs funds to turn this around through vocational training and rehabilitation.

Jessica now wants to do her bit to actively stop sex trafficking so that others girls may experience the same joy and opportunities growing up as she did. On November 17, Jessica is hosting a clothes swap for Child Rescue at St Columba Church with the goal of raising enough money to bring two girls out of the sex trade. For just $10, the community can bring their quality pre-loved clothing and swap them for other cherished items at the ‘Great Swap to Stop’. Her goal is to raise $3000 and she is calling on the community to get involved. ■■ Tickets can be bought prior to the event at www.eventfinda. co.nz/2018/the-great-swap-tostop/auckland/botany-downs

Healing mental wounds of war By Farida Master

S

ome wounds are not visible. For some returned soldiers the battles continued long after the guns fell silent. Those were the thoughts that were running in Vanessa HatleyOwen’s mind as she attended an author talk about the effects of First World War. For someone who has always been a history buff, it didn’t take long for Vanessa to weave the idea into a children’s picture story book. So what happens after the soldiers return from war? She postulated and went on to write a gripping book for children at a

weekend retreat for writers. Titled ‘When Dad Came Home’ the story is about a returning soldier who is suffering from shell shock, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and looks at how his children and wife gently help him back to health. A self-confessed bookworm whose favourite reading spot is on her bed with the sun streaming in the window, birds chirping outside and the family dog on her lap, Vanessa thought that the book would be a good resource for schools as well as a way to gently introduce the subject of mental health into the story. “I wanted to write about the

returned servicemen, particularly the shell-shock, who mentally continued to fight the war, even when they came home, and make sure they are not forgotten,” says Vanessa, who until recently worked with Howick College where she look after public relations. Her earlier works include The Picture That Jack Drew – picture book manuscript for Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Award 2014 and Aprons and iPods, a junior fiction manuscript shortlisted for the Tom Fitzgibbon award, 2011. The Storylines Joy Cowley and Tom Fitzgibbon awards are for unpublished manuscripts. The Cockle Bay resident now has

Letting fee ban may raise rents F

ollowing the announcement from Parliament that it has voted to ban landlords from charging tenants for letting fees, REINZ warns that this might lead to an increase in rental prices in the long run. In its submission to the Select Committee REINZ, alongside other similar industry bodies, outlined that while banning letting fees will reduce fees upfront, that long term those fees may simply be recuperated by landlords through increased rent which contradicts the purpose of the ban, which is to reduce costs and improve fairness for tenants. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Whilst banning landlords from charging tenants letting fees might help them in the short term, in the long run it’s likely that these costs may be passed on to tenants via an increase in weekly rent. REINZ, alongside other similar industry bodies, outlined this point in our submission to the Select Committee. “Additionally, our concern is that it may make tenants with shorter term tenancy requirements, such as students or seasonal workers, less attractive to landlords making it harder for them to obtain rental accommodation,” says Norwell. “Given the current raft of legislation being directed at landlords, this may contribute to

Around half of all Kiwis now live in rented homes.

landlords’ decision making to exit the rental market further reducing the available pool of rental properties and driving up prices. This has been highlighted by a number of property managers across the country now and we continue to call for a balanced approach to avoid harming the rental market in the long term. “We’ve said this before, but we think a better way to look after renters is to regulate the property management industry rather than focusing on smaller issues such as banning letting fees. We don’t want New Zealand to continue to be an outlier – instead we need to follow the good example set up countries including Australia, the UK, Republic of Ireland, the USA and Canada and ensure that our property market is regulated. This is one of the key ways we can ensure that we’re improving the lives of renters.”

But Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford says the move could put up to $47 million into the pockets of Kiwi families each year. Around half of all Kiwis now live in rented homes. “The law has been changed in time to give tenants a break before we enter the summer rental season when so many tenancies turn over. “This will make a real difference to struggling families. There are significant costs associated with moving to a new rental property, which many families are now forced to do every year. “When moving into a new rental property, tenants can face up to four weeks’ bond, two weeks’ rent in advance – and one weeks’ rent as a letting fee – in addition to moving costs. “With homeownership rates at a 60 year low, this change recognises that we need to take action now to make rent more affordable so people can save to buy their own home. “Letting fees are unfair. They have no economic rationale and there is no relationship between the amount of the charge and cost of the services provided. “Banning the charging of letting fees to tenants is a good first step in improving the life of renters, while we continue our broader review of the Residential Tenancies Act.”

mpressive as England’s defence was in the 12-11 rugby win against South Africa on the hallowed turf of Twickenham, coach Eddie Jones’ confidence going into the forthcoming test against the All Black is misplaced. Owen Farrell can count his lucky stars he wasn’t yellowcarded in the dying seconds when a penalty for a no arms tackle within Handre Pollard’s range was not awarded. All England’s points came from four Farrell penalties. However he will be a key man in trying to nullify Beauden Barrett’s attacking brilliance as England attempt to apply the clamp with their rush defence which worked so well against the Boks. If Jones’ confidence is based on the fact South Africa squared their Rugby Championship tests against New Zealand 1-1, it is misplaced. The Boks were missing several key players against England, among them halfback Faf de Klerk and fullback Willie le Roux. However they do have a big, strong forward pack which should test the All Blacks scrum which has had several players missing for much of the year because of injuries. On the bright side Codie Taylor, Karl T’uinukuafe, Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Scott Barrett and Ardie Savea have stepped into the breach and performed superbly.

Champion lock Sam Whitelock is another who is showing signs of wear and tear after a long, hard season. Meanwhile those critics who lambasted the All Black selectors for cheapening the jersey by increasing their 32-man squad to 51 to cater for Japan while sending an advance party to London, ended up with egg on their faces following the tourists 69-31 win at Yokohama. True, the defence wasn’t always on song when Japan ran in five tries. But credit to Japanese flair and daring, inspired by former Highlanders coaches Jamie Joseph and Tony Brown. It also highlighted the outstanding contribution of All Black rookies George Bridge and Jackson Hemopo, with the former scoring two tries and setting up another after coming off the bench and the latter playing with tremendous gusto. Like several others, Bridge can play more than one position. On current form he looks much sharper than side-stepping genius Nehe Milner-Skudder who has lost much of his speed after a prolonged injury-enforced spell. No 7 Dalton Papalii was another to have a fine test debut with a strong defensive game although he’s better suited to the blindside flank. Once again Richie Mo’unga

produced a classy performance and I long for the day if and when the selectors combine him and Beauden Barrett in the fiveeighths where their guile, speed and creativity could create havoc for opponents. Meanwhile Ngani Laumape’s three tries against Japan suggests Sonny Bill Williams doesn’t have a mortgage on the No 12 jersey. Laumape isn’t as good a distributor as SBW and some of his fellow contenders, but none have his try-scoring knack. Having overwhelmed USA women 67-6, the world champion Black Ferns are in a class of their own and the American men didn’t fare much better on home soil when hammered 59-22 by the Maori All Blacks. Although yellow-carded for a body slam, rangy Pari Pari Parkinson and speedy 21-year-old locking partner Isaia Walker-Leawere had strong games, the latter racing 50m for a try. Lively Mitch Karpik was the pick of the loosies, being far busier than the gifted Akira Ioane. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Heimgartner charges to top 8 in Pukekohe

Photo Nissan Motorsport

Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner powered to an equal-season-best finish of 8th at his home-track of Pukekohe Raceway on Sunday after a strong showing in the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Motorsport Altima. Heimgartner started the day with his third Top Ten Shootout appearance (his first came in 2015 and his second in March this year), laying down a 1m 03.428s as the first shootout entrant to lay down a lap. After starting the race from the fifth row on the grid, the 23-yearold Melbourne-based Kiwi moved quickly to be inside the top five by the first pit stop, re-joining in 11th position. In an intense race, he powered on and re-joined ninth after the second stop before making a move on Tickford racer Mark Winterbottom to finish the race in eighth position. “Eighth position is a good result today. The car was speedy, we

had priority in the pit stops as the leading Nissan racer on track, we were consistent, and things went my way so I was able to race hard and ensure we brought home a solid result,” Heimgartner said. “To finish in the top eight home in New Zealand was pretty special too – I always love racing at home and I am really glad we could put on a good showing. Earlier in the weekend, Heimgartner’s best practice result was 6th which was set ahead of qualifying 11th for Saturday’s race. The Plus Fitness driver got a good start to the Saturday outing, however ultimately doublestacking would hinder his progress and see him finish 18th. He will next be on-track with Nissan Motorsport as part of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 from November 23-25.

Hedley Howarth Round One, Day One – East Coast Bays v Howick Pakuranga, Saturday November 3 East Coast Bays were sent in to bat by the Alpacas, and although they made a decent start to their innings, losing three wickets between 45 and 50 runs put them on the back foot. Michael Ross and ECB wicketkeeper Cole Briggs combined to pull the innings close to respectability, Ross scoring at close to a run a ball.Once again Donavan Grobbelaar was impressive with the ball, picking up 4-31, including Briggs for 52. Howick Pakuranga went about their first innings briskly, with an obvious desire to have East Coast batting again before the end of the day. To that end, David Winn found himself one run short of 50 when the innings was declared. Grobbelaar came in at six and hit 29 off 20 balls, Sam Borland hit 14 off ten. Howick Pakuranga then declared 33 runs ahead of East coast Bays with four wickets in hand and five overs to pick up a wicket. That wasn’t to be, the East Coast Bays openers, negotiating the first overs of their second innings successfully, and going into day two six without loss. Bill Walshes said he is pleased to have gained 10 vital first innings points.

PURC 7s win club champs T

he Akarana Timbers Pakuranga United 7s side have been crowned Auckland Club Champions for 2018 After five tough games at the weekend. This is the club’s second title after winning the inaugural event in 2010. In pool play Pakuranga accounted for Mt Wellington 29-12, Eden 26-0 and College Rifles 22-12. This saw them qualify top of the pool and secure a semi-final against top contenders University. In a tough battle between the two best sides on display, Pakuranga was down 5 -14 at half time but scorched home by scoring four second half tries to come away with a comprehensive 31-14 victory. The final against a large Marist side again turned out to be an epic encounter with Pakuranga down 5-12 at half time again. This time Marist came out firing after the break and looked to be going the length of the field before inspirational “sweeper” Gerald Van Wyk cut the runner down just short of the try line, turned over possession and started a counter attack which saw Pakuranga score to level the scores at 12-all. This broke the Marist resolve and Pakuranga quickly added two late tries to

run away with a 22 -12 win. “It was a fantastic day for the team. The boys played outstandingly all day and I am rapt for them as winning tournaments is tough to do in the 7s game” said coach Mark Dickison. “For me, being a recent player who has moved into coaching, I really felt the same emotions I did as a player and came away

absolutely knackered at the end of the day. It was a great day for our club.” The victory qualifies Pakuranga to return to the NZ Club 7s to compete for the Middlesex Cup to be held at Eden Rugby Club in early 2019 where the team will be looking to add to their first NZ title they won in 2013.
