'Nutter set own room alight'
By NICK KRAUSE
T
he fire which gutted most of a Somerville Road home last week was allegedly caused by a disgruntled 24-year-old flatmate who torched his own bedroom. And the home, valued recently at around $1.6 million, is not in any way connected to the production of the drug P (methamphetamine), another occupant told the Times. A woman – who had a room at the house and asked not to be named - said the culprit was one of six renting a room at the plush home. The alleged arsonist currently has name suppression. The head tenant, who is understood to be around retirement age, is believed to be Kevin Patterson, an apparent former teacher at Howick College.
The home’s owner – who also asked for anonymity - said the house had been rented out for six years to Kevin with no problems - until this issue with the alleged arsonist. Kevin had tried to eject the young man. “Kevin is respectable. He has history with the school and is now a professional painter,” the owner said. The issue with the alleged arsonist was the culmination of several days of pressure to pay the rent. The woman said Kevin tried to throw “the nutcase” out the week before the fire. On the day he was kicked out, the door was locked behind him. The woman said: “He was locked out. I heard him say ‘Fire! Get out,” she said. “He was crazy. The fire started in his own room (located upstairs). I’m really shocked. “People said he was running over cars.”

She reiterated that the house was not dealing or making illicit drugs. “It’s not a P house – it never was. it’s peaceful and quiet. There are never any parties here.” Police charged the man on Monday afternoon and he has appeared in the Manukau District Court. He is on bail and is to appear in court again later this month. The maximum penalty for the offence is 14 years’ jail. Part of Somerville Road was closed off from 4pm on Monday as fire fighters worked for several hours to get the blaze under control. Meanwhile the home’s owner said his insurer says the house isn’t covered for arson. “The property has always been insured,” the owner said. He said in 2016 State Insurance brought in a new policy and that arson is not covered.

“Now State don’t want to pay. You should always check your policy,” warned the owner, who has not discounted challenging State’s position. However a State spokesperson said there have been no significant changes to State Home Insurances policies regarding arson in recent years. “Insurance claims are considered on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on the facts and circumstances related to the event. “As with most home insurance policies, State covers policyholders for accidental loss, not intentional damage. However, in general terms, with rental properties, if a tenant, guest of a tenant or anyone else living in the building, intentionally causes damage by fire, then the policy would provide cover for this.”

hanging between a ferry and bus at Half Moon Bay is now easier and protected from the weather. Auckland Transport, in partnership with the Howick Local Board and the NZ Transport Agency, opened the new Half Moon Bay bus interchange following a dawn karakia last Friday. Buses started using the interchange on Sunday. AT’s group manager for major projects, David Nelson says that the bus interchange and pier provide safer, more convenient connections between ferry services and bus services. “It plays a pivotal role in supporting bus services that form part of new bus network for east Auckland and is within a short walking distance of the ferry pier,” he says. “In addition to the improved amenity and convenience of hav-

ing bus services close to the new pier, the new bus facility will provide for much safer pedestrian connectivity between services, eliminating the need for pedestrians to cross vehicle routes or filter through traffic.” He says the transport hub at Half Moon Bay is part of AT’s
plan to provide a well-connected and easy-to-use public transport network for all Aucklanders. Howick Local Board chair David Collings says the bus interchange is the final piece of the puzzle of its vision to create a transport interchange at Half Moon Bay.

“With the new ferry pier that opened last year, the new bus network and now the interchange, commuters can enjoy a much more pleasant and connected public transport experience by being able to get off a ferry or bus and transferring to another service within a few metres.” Mana Whenua artist Tessa Harris of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki designed cultural expressions of relevance to this area. “The designs created speak to the history of ‘Te Wai o Taiki’ – the Tamaki River or known to Ngai Tai as Te Wai o Taikehu and the once abundant kai moana (sea food), manu (birds) and the many waka which traversed these waterways.” The overall project budget, for both the pier and the interchange was $9 million, with funding contributions from Auckland Council, NZTA and the Howick Local Board.
Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has announced that he will be taking a few months away from Parliament for health reasons. Ross, who is also the National Transport and Infrastructure spokesperson, announced he will be taking medical leave from Tuesday and doesn’t expect to be back in Parliament for some time. “Recently I have been dealing with some personal health issues,” he says. “There are times in life where you have to put your own health and family first. As a husband and a father I need to do that at this time.” Ross has also requested that his Transport and Infrastructure portfolios be reallocated and that he step back from his front bench role. He says he looks forward to returning to Parliament in the future to re-join Caucus. National Party leader Simon Bridges says he is supportive of Ross’ request for time away from Parliament to deal with some personal health issues. “Jami-Lee will be stepping back from his portfolio responsibilities and from the Opposition front bench,” he says. “His Transport portfolio will be picked up by Paul Goldsmith and his Infrastructure responsibilities by Judith Collins. Paul Goldsmith’s Revenue portfolio will be picked up by Andrew Bayly.” Bridges confirmed this decision is unrelated to an ongoing leak investigation into who leaked Bridges’ travel expenses to the media.

Our newest councillor sworn in Paul Young signs official declaration to become a councillor for the Howick Ward
A
drum roll, followed by a traditional Lion Dance, heralded Paul Young’s entry to Auckland Council. The new councillor was officially sworn in as a representative of the Howick Ward by Mayor Phil Goff at the meeting of Auckland Council’s Governing Body on September 27. To mark the occasion, a Chinese cultural performance was held before the official ceremony. The traditional lion dance is said to signify good luck. Young made his statutory declaration and addressed a meeting attended by family, friends, supporters and fellow councillors including his Howick Ward colleague Sharon Stewart. In his maiden speech he acknowledged the late Dick Quax and the contribution he made to the Howick Ward and to Auckland. He also spoke of his own commitment to Auckland
and to supporting migrant communities. “Nearly 24 per cent of Aucklanders identify as Asian and it’s important this is reflected in the diversity of this governing body. I’m proud to represent my Asian-Kiwi ward but, first and foremost, I’m an Auckland Councillor and will strive to serve all Aucklanders. “Encouraging integration of new migrants into New Zealand society and enabling them to make a valuable contribution is important. It’s good for our city as a whole and I am committed to engaging people from a wide range of backgrounds. “A priority is also transport opportunities for east Auckland including the Eastern Busway Project,” said Young. Goff congratulated Young on becoming the newest member of the Governing Body, highlighting his ever-present com-

As I meet with people across the Pakuranga Electorate, I am constantly told about the impact the MP for Pakuranga Government is having on the back pockets of New Zealanders by forcing up the price of petrol through increased petrol taxes. The cost of living is increasing in New Zealand, with petrol and rents reaching record levels and electricity expected to follow; this is all a direct result of ill-thought through Government policies. It’s particularly bad for hardworking taxpayers in Auckland, who were already facing record high fuel prices thanks to the regional fuel tax, which has further pushed up our everyday costs. When National was in Government we were able to invest in major new roading projects throughout Auckland without a regional fuel tax while keeping the cost of living down. The Waterview Tunnel is just one example. Our ambitious transport agenda was one that didn’t require the Auckland Council to impose new taxes. We expected them to tighten their ever increasing spending while we kept our own books in order with strong budget surpluses. The national fuel price is currently averaging $2.40 a litre for 91, around half of which is already tax. This is a huge increase from just a year ago, when in October last year the national price was only $2.069. This means for everyday families it now costs an extra $20 to refuel their car. This month the Government rolled out another petrol tax - the first of its three 4 cents per litre national fuel tax increases, pushing the fuel price even higher. Further tax increases are planned for 2019 and 2020. Transport Minister Phil Twyford has argued that people on low incomes will be less affected, but he has ignored the fact that they spend a greater proportion of their income on petrol. This means tax increases have a bigger impact on their ability to pay the bills at a time when the cost of living is already skyrocketing. And if all this wasn’t enough, ACC has proposed a 12.1 per cent hike in the motor vehicle levy for road users, including an almost 2 cents a litre increase for petrol. The question has to be asked – when will all these additional costs stop? National is committed to sound economic management, supporting hard-working families, and repealing the regional fuel tax if elected back into Government. ■ Simeon BrownMember of Parliament for Pakuranga

Freedom camping, a hornets nest Since the Auckland Council announced seven proposed sites for freedom camping in the Howick ward - Barry Curtis Park, Eastern Beach, Howick Beach, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Mangemangeroa Reserve, Howick Library and the Moore Street carpark – residents have been up in arms. The Times was inundated with responses from the community on what they think about the new proposed freedom camping spots. By Therese Henkin “I can’t think of anything worse.” “Freedom bludgers” “This is a crazy idea” The response to Auckland Council’s announcement that seven locations around the Howick ward are being considered as freedom camping spots has been fierce. Residents and ratepayers across the ward have weighed in on why they think freedom campers should not be allowed to make themselves at home around east Auckland. Many believe the proposed sites are simply too small to facilitate freedom campers, while others believe vandalism, property damage and litter will skyrocket should the proposal go ahead. Steve Lincoln from Botany says he has heard many horror stories over the years of freedom campers behaving badly, illegally dumping waste, crowding beach areas, and not following the rules. And he says with overcrowding in Auckland, beach facilities, parking and reserves are already stretched to the limit without adding freedom campers to the mix. “If you want to camp you must find a camping park with the facilities to support this,” he says.
JU0713
Arthur Moore from Pakuranga agrees and says while the campers vans may be self contained the effluents has to be disposed of some time and he wonders where Council expect this will be done. He also says providing free camping spots around the Howick ward takes business away from legitimate camping ground proprietors and imposes further costs on the “already burdened” ratepayer and the taxpayer. However the response isn’t all bad. Some have expressed that freedom camping gets a bad wrap and council should be doing more to support freedom camping in the Howick ward. Local Bruce Powley says allowing freedom campers in the Howick ward could be great for our local businesses. “As a business person myself I know when the local economy is down and the tourist come into town, it can make a difference between staying afloat and going under,” says Powley. He also says residents shouldn’t be so quick to assume it is visitors to our beaches and reserves that are responsible for vandalism and rubbish dumping. “In any park or beach there is
always going to be litter or unruly behaviour. The question is who is doing this – locals or freedom campers?” A former operations manager for a motorhome rental company who asked not to be named says New Zealand needs to change their attitude towards freedom campers and make overseas freedom campers feel more welcome. She says it’s not just a matter of supplying freedom campers with places to park, but also provides the necessary facilities they need. She says she acknowledges residents concerns but says rather than banning freedom camping all together, Council should look at setting up better facilities for freedom campers in the ward. She says in feedback sessions with freedom campers their biggest complaints were road users being unfriendly towards motorhomes, lack of basic facilities such as rubbish bins at most freedom camping spots, and the lack of waste dumping facilities. She says there is a stigma that freedom campers and motorhome users take advantage of the land and environment they use, and she says this simply isn’t the case.
Mangemangeroa – one of seven proposed sites to open for freedom campers.
Stewart raises objections
A
recent proposal announced by the Auckland Council would allow freedom campers to stay at seven sites around the Howick Ward. Howick ward Councillor Sharon Stewart says the proposed sites are concerning and local residents deserve a chance to have their say. The sites include Barry Curtis Park, Eastern Beach, Howick Beach, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Mangemangeroa Reserve, Howick Library and the Moore Street carpark. “Freedom camping is a controversial proposal within our communities, so I’m pleased that the Council is planning a public consultation phase before any final decisions are made on these locations in Howick,” Stewart says. In a recent Council Regulatory meeting the issue Stewart was disappointed that the Howick Local board didn’t say anything about the
proposed Freedom camping sites. She says other Local Boards spoke of concerns for most of the sites that they felt were not acceptable in the board resolutions to the regulatory committee. “During the recent Council meeting to discuss this proposed bylaw, I attempted to raise further objections on behalf of our community to the sites it would still allow freedom campers to use, but was voted down.” Stewart says most residents are opposed because of the potential for damage to property and treasured public spaces. Most of the proposed sites are well-trafficked parks and beaches, and she says it has been seen in other areas of New Zealand where this approach has caused problems. She says rubbish and general cleanliness issues are a big part of why people dislike freedom camping in their area.

Update on NZ Post/ Kiwibank Howick closure
Confirmation that NZ Post and Kiwibank will be closing their joint Howick branch will be difficult for the local community to accept, and ensuring a smooth transition is now the top priority. Following the announcement of the planned closure of their Howick branch, I met with senior representatives this week from both New Zealand Post and Kiwibank to share the concerns of the community and seek clarity on what comes next. Some of the biggest concerns I have heard from the community over the last week were around billpaying services, and NZ Post have assured me this week that those services will be staying in Howick

alongside postal services. While Kiwibank have confirmed they do not plan to continue their presence in Howick following the branch closure as they relook at how they offer banking, residents can take some small comfort in knowing NZ Post remains committed to the area and has assured me they will do everything they can to minimise any disruption. NZ Post are now seeking an established business in Howick to take on all postal and bill-paying services, and also plan to keep their PO Boxes local. At this stage they weren’t able to confirm whether those boxes would remain in place or move to whichever business they partner with for other services. It is important to note that the Howick branch will remain open
for some time still, and all services will continue to be provided as we head towards the holiday season in December. I am told that any formal closure and transition of services will not happen until next year at the earliest. I have asked both NZ Post and Kiwibank to keep me informed about any news or information regarding this closure and will share that with the community as soon as I hear anything further. I know many people in Howick rely heavily on the services their local PostShop provides, and I will work hard to make sure their voices are heard and the impact on them is minimal as this transition commences.

With regards to the article on the change of ownership of NZ Knit Co (Times, September 27), NZ Knit has had a number of people call and go in thinking the business is closing. They have seen the heading “A bittersweet goodbye for NZ Knit” and assumed the business was shutting “exactly the opposite of what we wanted to achieve,” says the new owners Troy and Kathy Woods. They wish to reiterate to customers that they are very much open for business.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers
After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.
Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Inversion helps to:
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability
“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

LAST CHANCE FOR A FREE TREATMENT
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph repairing itself, however if the wear and through the muscles so toxins build up, tear on the body is greater than the body’s to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the ability Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle The decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

How do you flip a classroom? By FARIDA MASTER
S
ome local school teachers are pushing the envelope with a revolutionary educational philosophy. While not many traditional schools are aware of Flipped Classrooms, they are a definite trend and part of the national education conversation in New Zealand. At a recent Reach Every Student Conference (RESCON) hosted at Ormiston Senior College by leader of mathematics Subash Chandar K, more than 60 teachers spent two days with Jon Bergmann, one of the pioneers of flipped learning. Mr Bergmann was accompanies by a team of leading New Zealand and Australian teachers including Jeremy Cumming, Beth Lamb, Matt Lambert, Steve Griffiths, and Aimee Shackleton. The opening session by Mr Bergmann started with a keynote on `Rising above to make a difference’. He asked teachers why they are in the profession— is it to inspire, make a difference, pure joy? He also received many honest answers to questions around
debilitating factors that hold schools back. `Toxic culture, inflated egos, traditional mindsets’, were some of the responses by teachers recorded on the Mentimeter app that instantly showed the poll results on the big screen. Mr Bergmann said teachers could give themselves permission not to be perfect. “But you must remember that the main thing is to reach to every student in the classroom,” he said. So how do you flip a classroom? In a traditional classroom setup, the teacher delivers lessons face-to-face to students who listen, interact and take notes. However, in a flipped classroom students access teachercreated videos and pre-recorded lessons on their devices. They are introduced to content before the class begins. It effectively frees up more time in the classroom to assist students with problems they face whilst working on an assignment. “It’s not about chalk and talk,” said Mr Bergmann. The American educationist works with governments, schools and universities globally, and has an international faculty
to introduce the learning model in Australia, Sweden, Norway, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, China and Taiwan. A former science and technology teacher, Mr Bergmann decided to “flip” what students did in his class, watching video lectures at home and doing exercises (homework) in class under supervision. He found that student grades went up. “It’s time to stop lecturing and engage students by using the time in the classroom to have discussions and debates,” he said. “A lot of kids who used to miss class also found it very helpful to have pre-recorded lessons as flipped learning creates a student-centred environment. Students can stop and rewind the video for information as often as they need to do understand the concept. “It’s more active instead of the passive learning in class.” Some of the technology-savvy teachers at the conference said they are working with the concept of flipped classrooms in their schools while some of the more experienced teachers are still trying to fully understand the new concept.
Hitting NZ where it hurts With the cost of living going up and business confidence heading down, it is very clear that the Government is on the wrong track for New Zealand. The recent decision around banning oil and gas exploration is a good example of the kind of policy that illustrates the anti-growth agenda of this Government. In this case, the official advice on this issue shows that the decision was made with very little evidence behind it. Officials who provided recommendation to the Minister were against the move and said that the ban could cost the New Zealand economy $7.9 billion in lost tax revenue. What’s worse, there is also limited evidence that the ban will even reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
Decisions such as these directly affect the confidence of New Zealand’s business as the Government shows it is willing to make economically damaging decisions in order to seize a headline. That has a very real effect on New Zealanders. As the confidence in the New Zealand economy wanes, we can also see the value of our dollar dropping. We can see the impact that has on our fuel prices as they reach higher and higher prices in the face of our weakening currency. At this time last year the national fuel price was, according to the AA, $2.04 per litre. Today it’s $2.40. That is a huge increase that is driving up the cost of living. It means that, for someone driving a car that takes 60 litres of petrol, it

On top of that, the Government is planning on slapping three rounds of new fuel taxes each year for the next three years starting on October 1, 2018. Instead of new taxes, higher prices and low confidence, we need to jump start our approach to the economy. We need to start listening to the workers and businesses who make it run and ensure we are doing all that we can to lower everyone’s cost of living. ■ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

There are two massive fields and huge learning buildings. Explaining the significance of the school name she says, “We are the heart of Nikau that was used for nourishment and shelter. Everything in the school is connected and is part of a narrative. “All the trees planted are native and we have plenty of bird-feeding trees as well as a beautiful path through the garden. Nikau provides for the once many manu (birds); the analogy is the berries are the teachings and the manu are the tamariki (children). “Ten per cent of the school curriculum is committed to outdoor learning. I want children to climb trees and learn about plants; to take water samples and study them. Ours will be a waste-free school,” she says. “We have worked on thoughts of a cultural concept for the bridges connecting the car park to the school.” From a walking dog school bus to cool uniforms designed by Kukri Sports, there is a burst of new ideas that lean on the practical as well as work on building exciting and positive relationships with neighbouring schools and the community. The school at 187 Flat Bush Road is taking student enrolments.

Mel Bland takes great pride in the fact that as a native Fijian, she is founding principal of Te Uho O Te Nikau, a new school primary in Flat Bush that will open its doors in February 2019. Housed currently at Ormiston Junior College till their school construction is completed, Ms Bland is already creating quite an impression. The first thing that strikes you about the vivacious and friendly school leader is a black Labrador that follows her on a leash wherever she goes. It is not unusual to see the founding principal surrounded by a young fan club that wants to play with Nikau, a pet therapy dog. A dog lover who has even worked as a community outreach manager with SPCA, she says that dogs on-site are priceless. “And it’s great for some kids who find it difficult to make friends,” says the educationist who has worked with pet therapy for children with rage problems. isa Bracefield from Tyndale Park Christian School won first prize in the Year 9-13 Consumer Science category as well as the Best Year 9 project of the NIWA Manukau Region Science and Technology Fair. With everyone getting cold and having a runny nose this winter, Lisa decided to work on the project to find out the softest and most absorbent tissue for the nose. “I have chosen this inquiry because, first of all, when you have a cold, your nose sometimes hurts from blowing it a lot. Everyone wants a tissue that is soft and doesn’t hurt your nose every time you blow it,” she says. The Year 9 student says she chose absorbency as one of the other tests “because when you blow your nose, a certain amount of fluid comes out. If you only blow your nose once and the tissue is already drenched, you have to get lots of tissues. When you have an absorbent tissue, you can blow your nose several times and the tissue will still not be drenched. “I have specifically chosen 10 boxes of tissues that have no additives to them (to make them softer). I also chose all the tissues that were the same sizes (or sometimes very close to the same size). By having these limitations, I can compare

Wild Journeys

by Bruce Ansley ■■ Published by HarperCollins ■■ RRP $45.00
New Zealand’s famous and infamous, historic and off-the-beaten-path journeys, tracks, routes and passages
C
elebrated writer Bruce Ansley has a deep love of New Zealand and its people. In Wild Journeys, his latest book, this is reflected in every absorbing page. It’s a book of stories spanning the most remote to the most populated parts of the country. Join Ansley as he retraces the path of the doomed surveyor John Whitcombe across the Southern Alps; follow the raiding party of the northern chief Te Puoho along the West Coast; sail around New Zealand’s northern and southern capes; walk through the Valley under
the Two Thumb Range to the mythical Mesopotamia; drive from Waiheke to Wanaka (in a hurry); set off on a hunt for the South Island’s Grey Ghost; look deep into the heart of volcanic New Zealand; and track our most unlikely hero, the prison escaper George Wilder. ‘In the early hours of 30 January 1963, prison officer R.H. Grubb was knocked unconscious, bound and gagged as he was checking cells in the east-wing basement of Mount Eden prison. Grim Victorian piles evidently did not suit George at all well and this one was worse than New Plymouth. Thirty-six
people had been executed there, latterly on a scaffold known as the meccano, its steel pieces bolted together in a thin space resembling a rocky gorge. The prison might have cowed its inmates, but it also gave them a strong incentive to depart.’ Wild Journeys is a book that speaks to the Kiwi spirit of sturdy self-reliance and inspires the adventurer in us all. It’s storytelling at its finest. ‘I’m not an intrepid sailor, not even a very good one. But I have rounded both capes by sea, South Cape twice. The second time accidental...’ Ansley is one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent storytellers. For more than two decades he was a writer for New Zealand Listener, before becoming a full-time author in 2007. He has held fellowships at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and has won a number of journalism awards. He is author of ten books, including Coast: A New Zealand Journey which won Best Illustrated Non-fiction Book at the New Zealand Post Book Awards in 2014. His other books include A Fabled Land: The Story of Canterbury’s Famous Mesopotamia Station and Wild Roads: A New Zealand Journey. He loves tramping and has roamed the South Island’s back country. For many years he lived in a tiny traditional bach in Golden Bay, and once built a house in the far reaches of Pelorus Sound. He has worked as a commercial fisherman in Fiordland and as a deer farmer on Banks Peninsula, but has also called each of the four main cities home. On a good day he can usually be found out on the water in his Norwegian motor sailer, but his favourite occupation is simply poking around New Zealand, which he regards as the wildest, most beautiful, most romantic country in the world. Ansley has three sons and lives with his wife Sally on Waiheke Island.

egan Norton, a Year 5 student at Sunnyhills Primary School, may seem an unlikely rat catcher, but this 10-year-old from east Auckland has successfully caught four rodents in her back yard. “The rats are killing all our native animals and I really like birds,” says Regan, who is not afraid of rats but thinks they are a nuisance as they endanger native animals. However she admits that their tails “do freak her out” since “they have no fur on them”. Regan’s school runs an Education for Sustainability programme, for all classes, with a specialist teacher and dedicated classroom. She was inspired to start trapping after her Enviro lessons focused on how to encourage more native birds in the local area. With her family, she attended the ‘Pestival’ hosted at the school with Auckland City Council and Enviroschools, where the importance of reducing pest species that attack birds was discussed and rat traps were given out. Regan’s family is just one of many who trap in their backyards in an effort to save native birds. The school’s involvement in the effort to save native birds, is not without controversy. An HBO news item entitled ‘Kids in New Zealand are out to kill the county’s invasive mammals’, featuring Sunnyhills, received considerable online backlash. Many online commentators questioned the need to kill introduced species or the involvement of children. Environmental teacher Christine Daniel defends the involvement of students

Stratton’s Living History
T
October sees ceramics fill Malcolm Smith Gallery. We are thrilled to be hosting Living History, an exhibition by Wellington ceramic artist Richard Stratton. This exhibition has come to us from The Dowse and continues Malcolm Smith Gallery’s proclivity for showing innovative works in clay – following on from the stunning exhibition of Isobel Thom’s work in 2016 and the exquisite display of Korean Ceramics in 2017. Richard Stratton’s ceramics have always responded to industrially produced press-moulded and heavily ornate 18th century ceramics. He finds joy in investigating very old ceramic practices and bringing them back into the now, fusing the historical form and technique with his imaginative interpretations of domestic objects. Living History incorporates a number of influences - Brutalist architecture, Russian constructivism, broken ceramic sherds scavenged from the river Thames and the everyday realities of suburban life have all shaped this new body of work. Over his 20 year career, Stratton has become known for creating intricate domestic ware, juxtaposing historical ceramic techniques with decorations that reference pop culture. In Living History he extends these ideas, as the result of his 2015 residency at Guldagergaard, an international ceramic research centre in Denmark. The residency inspired him to move
hey are back to entertain again. Returning for Operatunity’s Divas and Divos, New Zealand’s own Three Tenors, will present a soaring tribute to the greatest voices of all time - Pavarotti, Maria Callas and Andrea Bocelli. And these are just some of the singers celebrated in this programme of operatic and crossover favourites, interspersed with humour, film clips and delightful anecdotes. Operatunity’s iconic New Zealand Three Tenors, Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua, Derek Hill and Kalauni Pouvalu will perform in Divas and Divos in Botany on Tuesday October 9 at 11am, at St Columba Presbyterian Church, 480 Ti Rakau Dr. Principal resident artists with Operatunity, audiences are well acquainted with Bonaventure or Bonnie as he is better known. Since starting out in Operatunity’s Class Act Opera 12 years ago, he has developed a reputation for his ease across genres, crooning ballads with his guitar, to performing with New Zealand Opera. Canadian-Kiwi Derek recently stepped into a different kind of role welcoming a baby girl to his family. A graduate of McGill University in Montreal with high distinction in voice, it was only natural he would go on to per-

away from figurative representation into enigmatic, abstracted forms. Stratton’s work is unusual in that instead of stemming from Asian ceramic traditions — as many other studio potters’ practices do — it develops out of European industrial production. For Living History, he created over 200 variants of redware and black basalt stoneware clay by 18th Century potters William Greatbatch, Elers Brothers and Josiah Wedgwood. In reproducing clays from the European industrial revolution, Stratton acknowledges that objects such as bricks, chimneys and even toilets are just as important to our heritage as our nationally treasured Crown Lynn. This exhibition will be intriguing for any lover of ceramics and not to be missed. Living History opens on Saturday October 6 at 2.30pm. All welcome. We will also be hosting a talk with Richard in November. Details will be on our website shortly. And remember ArtWeek is happening all over the city from October 6 to 14. ore than 120 women celebrated 125 years of Women’s Suffrage at a women’s conference held at Bucklands and Eastern Beach War Memorial Hall recently. Robust discussions were held from women’s health to mental health and women’s empowerment as the attendees broke up into groups at the annual conference of the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA). Thought provoking group discussions were led by Dr Claire Badenhorst, Dr Pervin Dalal, Dr Bhavana Patel, Dr Keerthna Kamath and Dr
Vandana Resela. Organised by Dr Primla Khar, chairperson Women’s Forum NZICA, the day-long event incorporated a plethora of activities from discussions to talks by women who walk the talk like the former Governor General’s wife Lady Susan Satyanand and Minister for Ethnic Communities, Building and Construction, Education and Health, Jenni Salesa as well as politician and trade unionist Laila Harre. “One of the differences between the genders is that a woman’s head is always influenced by her heart and a man’s heart is in his head,” said lady Satyanand light-heartedly. “It
always begins when you sink into his arms and ends with your hands in the sink.” ‘So how is life now that Dr Anand Satyanand is no more the Governor General of New Zealand,’ asked one, to which her prompt reply was “I feel more self reliant now that I don’t have other doing things for me.” Members of Parliament Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Paramjit Parmar were also there to cheer and inspire women to look after each other. “It is only apt that NZICA Women’s Forum decided to hold their Annual Conference as a celebration of 125 years of Women’s Suffrage
Six more red light cameras go live in Auckland ... and two are local Six new red light safety cameras are operating in Auckland from today, adding to six already in operation that have issued 2314 infringements in just two and a half months. The new cameras, which are enforced on a rotational basis, are operating at: ■■ Great South Road and Cavendish Drive – two sites ■■ Te Irirangi Drive and Accent Drive – two sites ■■ Great North Road and Rata Street ■■ Great South Road and Reagan Road “The purpose of the cameras is to save lives and stop injuries,” says Mayor Phil Goff. “That is why we are telling people where the cameras are and that they are operating from today. “There is a culture among some drivers that red lights don’t matter and can be ignored. That is blatantly wrong and puts the safety of others on the road – drivers, pedestrians and people on bikes – at risk. “When red light cameras were trialled between 2008 and 2010, there was a 43% reduction in red-light running and an average 63% decrease in crashes attributable to red light running. “That’s what we want to see happening again. Yet between 21 June and 7 September this
in New Zealand. It is an opportune time to promote the well being of all and women in particular,” said Dr Khar. There was plenty to keep women of all ages, professions and calibre well nourished at the conference. A soul-stirring dance drama performance by the youth challenging Women’s Empowerment as Reality or Myth had everyone glued to their seats as it sensitively broached the topic of sexual abuse. It was followed by a presentation by Sri Rashmi which pushed women to seek an answer from within—do we recognise abuse? Are we open to discuss it?
The Tale of Kate Sheppard, a dramatic adaptation of the women’s suffragette movement in New Zealand that changed the course of history, also had the delegates sit up and take notice. A session on financial tips for women by Dr Manisha Dullu had women take notes. Adding to the fun factor was a Punjabi dance performance by Gurpreet and her team from Punjabi Cultural Association. A chair yoga session by Neelu Taore from the Art of Living had everyone in a relaxed mood, talking about wellbeing and the release of happy hormones.

Power pack pleases A
ny fear the All Blacks lack forward depth was absolutely dispelled by their annihilation of Argentina’s scrum in their latest 35-17 Buenos Aires rugby triumph. Especially pleasing was the muscular effort of props Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Karl Tu’inukuafe in the absence of experienced regulars Owen Franks and Joe Moody. Tu’ungafasi, aged 26, was an embarrassment when he was regularly popped out of the scrum when he first played for the Blues. But he has developed tremendously under the guidance of All Blacks scrum guru Mike Cron. He is also a strong ball carrier and demonstrated some deft passing skills in his latest stint against the Pumas. It was injuries to the two top Chiefs props that paved the way for dark horses Tu’inukuafe and good mate Angus Ta’avao to come out of the blue and claim All Black status this season. Tu’inukuafe, 25, has been a sensation and Ta’avao, 28,
Agnew’s Angle made an impressive debut when playing the final 20 minutes of last weekend’s test. With No 8 Luke Whitelock withdrawing because of illness, dynamic flanker Ardie Savea grabbed his chance with an outstanding display that should promote him as Kieran Read’s back-up. Whitelock is a good, solid player who is renowned for his defence and tidy lineout work, but he lacks Savea’s blazing speed and attacking thrust. What would also have pleased Hansen was the clean ball Savea won near the front of the lineout. PJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett combined nicely and defended stoutly and Sonny Bill Williams marked his return to test rugby with a perfect offload from which left wing Rieko Ioane almost scored his third try.

This time, however, it was the second string forwards who excelled along with Ioane and classy first-five substitute Richie Mo’unga, who made some snappy breaks and set up Anton LienertBrown’s try with a spot on grubber kick. With Lienert-Brown, Jack Goodhue and Ngani Laumape pushing Williams and Ryan Crotty hard for starting midfield spots and versatile Damian McKenzie, Ben Smith, Beauden and Jordie Barrett offering great utility value, Hansen has most of his bases covered. Despite this they face a big challenge on South African soil on Sunday in seeking to redeem their hard-fought Wellington defeat to the Springboks. Just as they did against the All Blacks in Wellington, the Boks defended magnificently in the second half of their 23-12 win against the Wallabies. It would also help if Beauden Barrett can repeat his four from four 100 per cent goal kicking success

effort in Buenos Aires. Meanwhile for sheer drama and excitement Ryder Cup golf between Europe and the United States takes some beating. That was also true of the latest effort in France despite Europe eventually winning easily by seven points. Who would have believed that Italian Francesco Molinari would be the first European to win all five of his matches and that Tiger Woods, fresh after his first PGA win in five years, would lose all five of his? Sergio Garcia won his singles to set the record for most career points in Ryder Cup history, a day after rookie Tommy Fleetwood combined with Molinari to become the first European pair to win all four of their foursomes since the current format began in 1979. It all made for fascinating viewing for the millions of television viewers and the enthralled thousands on course. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author.
