A tribute to mum By COLLEEN SANDFORD

Caroline Sandford celebrating her 100th birthday with son Merv Sandford and Hancock's Veng Taing.

Times photo Wayne Martin

Mum was born Caroline Harper Cox in Auckland, New Zealand on 19 October 1918. In her later years Mum marvelled that she was actually alive during World War 1 – well, just! She was only 23 days old when New Zealanders celebrated the end of the war to end all wars. It was not known then that as a young woman Mum would live through another World war just as terrifying – World War II. Mum’s father was employed by New Zealand Railways and was posted to Whangarei. She remembers as a very little girl being quite upset about something, so she went out into the back yard and kicked anything she could find to vent her frustration. To her huge embarrassment, when she looked up, there was a neighbour laughing heartily at her. Mum assures me this was her first and last outburst. I can vouch for this and remember Mum as being slow to anger. ➤ Turn to Page 5

AMETI busway ramps up

T

he countdown to the second largest transport construction project in Auckland takes a major step forward this week with demolition underway. Work began this week to remove 61 Auckland Council owned properties along the Panmure to Pakuranga stage of the AMETI Eastern Busway route. The removal of properties on the northern side of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road will finish by early 2019 to enable the main construction phase to start in March/April 2019. Mayor Phil Goff says, “AMETI is a priority transport project in Auck-

land. It will bring high frequency public transport to east Auckland along with significantly improved facilities for motorists and safer, faster connections for cyclists. “Our teams are working at pace to start construction early next year and bring high frequency public transport to the fast-growing region of East Auckland. “AMETI will better connect east Auckland with our transport network, unlocking housing development opportunities and boosting the local economy,” says Goff. The construction phase will take approximately two-years to

widen parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road to create a dedicated, congestion-free busway, that will provide a similar style of service to the Northern Busway. It will also involve transforming Panmure Roundabout into a safer signalised intersection, creation of new cycle and walking paths, improvements to public spaces and reserves, a second bridge across Tamaki River and several intersection upgrades. When the $1.4 billion busway is fully operational, customers will be able to travel between Botany and Britomart, by bus and train, in less than 40 minutes.

Fencing has been installed around the first properties to be removed at the corner of Pakuranga Road and Ti Rakau Drive and security and safety measures have been put in place to secure the other properties while the demolition work progresses. Auckland Transport and Panuku have been working closely with social and housing organisations to ensure a smooth transition for tenants of these properties and neighbouring residents, says Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Matt Poland. The removal of properties may generate some noise and dust and

allowances have been made with the contractor to minimise this as much as possible, he says. Auckland Transport project director, Duncan Humphrey says this work will significantly increase the visibly of the project for those who live, work and travel through this area “While this progress is exciting and will result in vastly improved travel choices, journey times and reliability for east Aucklanders, we appreciate that there will be inconveniences and disruption caused by the removal of properties and imminent construction. ➤ Turn to Page 5

Out in the wildernesss By Nick Krause

A

t this point in time, Jami-Lee Ross – rogue MP, renegade – is on his own, literally and figuratively. He is now an independent MP. And having been ‘sectioned’ to a mental health facility at an Auckland Hospital by police at the weekend, and reportedly released to a friend’s care on Tuesday, he is isolated. He really is a lone wolf now, somewhere in the wilderness (outside of Auckland it seems). The National Party will be quietly relieved. Ross must be too. It’s a time to lick their wounds. How long this impromptu ceasefire continues between the former Botany MP and the National Party is unknown. Ross announced last Friday on

radio he wasn’t relinquishing his parliamentary seat after all. That was after saying in his surprise press conference (last Tuesday) he was chucking it in and stand-

ing as an independent in the ensuing by-election. National publicly cut him loose (Tuesday last week after the caucus meeting).

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 25, 2018 — 3

Right now – if things remain unchanged – there will be no by-election. Ross will keep a firm grip on his electorate seat. The next general election isn’t until 2020. The National Party may have expelled him from the party but that’s it. For now. Leader Simon Bridges maintained on Radio NZ yesterday morning they would make no decisions about utilising the new waka jumping legislation to oust Ross (the same legislation they vehemently opposed and promised to repeal on their return to Government). Not while Ross was recovering. The party is treading gently. After a tumultuous week-anda-bit in politics, it is now deathly silent. Take a breath. It may not last.

Time to recover from the shock By PJ (Phil) Taylor OPINION: Now the dust is settling and the destructive storm has passed, it’s time to breathe, rehabilitate and heal. The political hurricane that blew through our east Auckland community and the rest of the country last week left everyone completely wiped out, as the weather calmly changed and spring sprung into bloom. Last Saturday, I had an opinion piece published by Times Online

(www.times.co.nz). It called on Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross to ‘Stop mudslinging, for Botany’s sake’ (headline) – and its language was direct. Subsequent events of recent days, including with his being sectioned and put into mental health care, gives everyone – especially him – space and time for contemplation, and the chance to start understanding what did actually happen, the week’s events being that almost surreal. Mistakes have been made, con-

siderable hurt has been caused. It’s now time for the beginning of righting the wrongs and the learning from the mistakes. Apologies have been made and more need to keep coming, sincerely. Everyone makes mistakes, even many, and a lot have been made on all sides of this political storm. It’s time for the community and nation to rally with care for the victims, and for Jami-Lee to get the care he needs. There is a lot of meaningful, positive life ahead after this dark time.

On Friday morning more than 140 National Party loyalists gathered at Howick Bowling Club for the SuperBlues meeting to be hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. With the political earthquake that has shaken the nation, everyone wanted to know what was happening to the Botany MP they had trusted and supported. But it was Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, along with Hunua MP Andrew Bayly and MP from Hutt South Chris Bishop who spoke instead. They reassured the National Party’s Advisory Group for Seniors that while they were all devastated, the party had never been more united. “Anyone who needs parliamentary support for things like ACC, law and order, immigration matters can come to us as neighbouring MPs. “The recent turn of events has had a huge impact on his family and we are worried about them as we are of JamiLee,” they said. “They say a week is a long time in politics. The past week certainly has been for the National Party and the people of Botany. Our thoughts are with Jami-Lee Ross and his family. “But what hasn’t changed for us is the National’s Party’s dedication to the Botany Electorate, our continued focus on our core values and our focus on holding this Government to account. “We appreciate that the people of Botany will feel let down. You elected a representative on the basis that they were a National MP. “But now we move on from here with a focus on the economy and the impact of fuel prices.”

Meanwhile, there is plenty in political circles to consider after this sorry saga. If politics continues on the same path as it proceeded down last week, there will be fewer good, honest people with honourable intentions to serve being prepared to stand as a candidate. That’s unfortunate, as we need good, experienced hard-working people representing us. ■■ Phil Taylor is a former editor of Howick & Pakuranga Times and worked in Jami-Lee Ross’ office.

aving won the Supreme Pie award in 2013 for Mince and Cheese pies, they have been making some of the best pies in the country. What’s exciting is that now Greenland Cafe has just opened its doors on Tuesday, at 18 Moore Street in Howick. Centrally located, the newly opened cafe has taken over from the previous owners of the popular Picallilly Cafe. Owner Bill Liem who runs the cafe with his brother Richard says that they offer the same menu that the previous owners used to have and more! He says he would like to welcome all the old customers that frequented Picallilly to try their menu. Bill has had a long experience of pie making and won lots of awards in the last ten years in the business. The newly renovated cafe that can seat around 40 people, serves breakfast and cabinet food with a selection of freshly baked muffins, croissants, scones, Panini, sandwiches and slices of delightful cake. Bill takes pride in the fact that they are known to use good ingredients that is the secret to every crusty award-winning pie. That apart, there is the art of making perfect pastry coupled with consistency and passion that goes behind making award-winning pies.

Known for their juicy steak and mushroom pies, tasty seafood pies as well as vegetarian pies filled with goodness for the whole family, the creamy steak, cheese and mushroom pies has had dedicated pie eaters visit Greenland Cafe regularly for their daily fix.

Caroline’s 100 not out ➤➤From page 1 She does not remember how old she was when her father was posted to Wellington with New Zealand Railways. Mum became extremely close to her first cousin, Merv Hardie, known to us kids as Uncle Merv, who lived in Auckland. He had a best friend called Tom Sandford. It was Christmas 1941 and Uncle Merv was already married to Miriam (known to us as Aunty Poll). In Uncle Merv’s view, marriage was pretty good and he considered it a fine institution for his first cousin Carol and his best mate Tom – and, what better way to get them together than invite Tom over to dinner when Carol was staying in Auckland. “I remember I wasn’t feeling nervous at all even though I knew what Merv was up to,” Mum told me. I’d put my bet on Aunty Poll telling her! When she met Dad, she considered him a little short, but extremely handsome. “In fact, the Sandford boys were all very good looking” she mused, “and lots of girls chased them”. Mum and Dad’s courtship and engagement were different to most in that the majority of it was spent writing letters. World War II was now having a huge impact on Mum’s life; Dad had been called up to serve in the New Zealand Army and they had to steal whatever time together they could. On 17 July 1942, Dad turned 21-years-old and was eligible for overseas service. It was at this

time their relationship became serious. They decided to become engaged. In December 1942 Dad received word that as part of the 3rd Division, he was being posted to New Caledonia and was given only one week of final leave. Dad needed to say goodbye not only to Mum, but also his family, so it was decided Mum would come to Auckland – but she had used her final “Civilian Travel Pass”. “I remember”, Mum told me, “almost begging to be given a travel pass - and after being refused I started to cry”. The ticket master responded, “I’ll see what I can do” and much to her delight, Mum soon found herself on a crowded train headed to Cambridge. Mum and Dad did not see each other again until June 1944 – but the letters continued.

Mum kept herself busy working as a milliner. Mum remembers the American soldiers coming into her workplace to invite the girls out. “I never took them up on any offer,” Mum laughed. “I just flashed my engagement ring at them.” It was the 9th June 1944 that Dad arrived home. 20 June 1944 was the day Mum and Dad married in the Auckland Registry Office. After the ceremony they attended Church to commit their marriage to the Lord. Mum was married to Dad for 74 years. On 31 August 1945, Mum gave birth to a baby boy who they named John after Dad’s father. Their second son, Mervyn, was named after Uncle Merv and then the youngest, a daughter, me, was named Colleen.

Times photo Wayne Martin

Today Mum also has four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The most important thing in Mum’s life is her Christian faith. My fondest memories of Mum are ‘doing lunch’. We’d be rich today if we saved the money we spent at cafes over the years, but I would do it all again in a flash. One can’t name a price for those memories. Thanks Mum. We love you. ■■ Colleen Sandford is the daughter of Caroline Sandford who celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday October 19. The occasion was marked with a celebration at Hancock’s where Caroline was gifted a cricket bat by the owners, part a long-running joke between them. In cricket, a century is a score of 100 in a single innings by a batsman.

➤➤From page 1 "We do have plans to minimise these impacts.” This work coincides with public consultation activity for the Pakuranga to Botany stage of the project, including the Reeves Road Flyover, new station in Pakuranga and the continuation of the Eastern Busway and integrated cycling networks between Pakuranga Town Centre and Botany Town Centre.

Want to know more?

People interested in finding out more about the property removal and construction for AMETI Eastern Busway can visit the information drop-in centre in Pakuranga Plaza between 2pm and 6pm on Tuesday or Thursday each week. “Ensuring that we have accessible information about all aspects of the project is important. The drop-in centre is an opportunity for people to meet the team, find out more about the project and how it will benefit the wider East Auckland,” says Poland. “It will also be a place to find out about the construction work between Panmure and Pakuranga.”

Trader charged over $7m fraud A Half Moon Bay man who operated a foreign exchange brokerage and trading business has been charged with fraud that allegedly saw his largest investors lose more than $1 million each. Kelvin Clive Wood (69) entered no plea on Tuesday at the Auckland District Court to representative charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office. Wood’s address is listed as Takutai Avenue on the NZ Companies

Office register. The SFO alleges that the defendant operated a Ponzi scheme from January 2010 to May 2017 – using new investors’ funds to pay other investors their reported gains, or to refund their principal investment. It alleges that 18 investors lost at least $7m as a result of the defendant’s offending during this eight-year period. Wood has been remanded on bail until his next appearance at the Auckland District Court on November 13. The Financial Markets

Authority referred the case to the SFO to investigate in mid2017. Wood facilitated foreign exchange and trading services through two companies – Forex (NZ) Limited and Forex NZ 2000 Limited. Wood’s clients placed money with him through his companies for the purpose of fixed interest term deposits, the purchase of foreign currency, general investment and foreign exchange trading purposes. Clients invested on the basis that their principal was not at risk.

Pause, breathe, smile the way to go

T

hree little words – pause, breathe, smile – are making a big difference in east Auckland’s primary schools. Pause, Breathe, Smile is the mindfulness programme that is helping school kids cope with stress, anxiety, and anger both in and out of the classroom. Pointview School principal Robin Kirkham says the programme, which is developed by the Mindfulness Education Group, teaches students how to understand and cope with their emotions and also improves concentration in the classroom. Pause, Breathe, Smile is supported by the Mental Health Foundation, Pause, Breathe, Smile is aligned with the New Zealand Education Curriculum. The initial programme is only eight weeks long, but Kirkham says teachers and students are practicing mindful techniques all year long. “You watch the students on the playground and you see them stop, take a deep breath, smile and then carry on.” It teaches children how to let their emotions settle before they react to a situation. Now he and several other local principals have banded together to help the Mindfulness Education Group petition for funding from the Ministry of Education to help more teachers train in mindfulness. Two weeks ago they met the committee that advises the government on mental health to discuss sponsoring the teacher training programme. Kirkham says the eight week long mindfulness education programme is helping to address the youth mental health crisis in New Zealand.

He says it is all about building a positive culture within an organisation rather than trying to fix a negative culture. So rather than only trying to address depression in teenagers, he says mindfulness helps students practice positive behaviours, build positive self esteem and develop self awareness and efficacy early on. Baverstock Oaks School is getting ready to roll out the mindfulness teacher training programme for its teachers next year. “We currently have only our senior leadership team trained, but the eight week programme has had such a huge impact that we want all of our teachers trained,” says principal Genée Crowley. She says it has been challenging to implement the programme with only a handful of trained facilitators. “We have seen this programme have a huge impact on our students. It covers kindness, it covers gratefulness, it covers being a good citizen

but also having the ability and knowledge to look after yourself as well,” she says. She says the programme has also shown an improvement in academic results. “One class was about to do a basic facts test, and before they started the teacher ran through mindful breathing and mindful movements with them and 75 per cent of the students received their best score ever that day.” Crowley and Kirkham say more and more schools are jumping on board. “I think if this programme and these techniques were seamless across all primary, intermediate and colleges, we would start to see huge improvements in New Zealand’s mental health statistics,” Kirkham says. Baverstock Oaks and Pointview School are joined by Mission Height Junior College, Willowbank Primary and Ormiston Junior College in teaching mindfulness in schools.

mey was born in Yarwell, Northhamptonshire, England, in 1829 where her father was a farmer. With her brother John, she sailed to Auckland in October 1860. She married shoemaker William Smith and Amey ran a “women’s seminary” school for ladies. In 1882, William Smith died and a year later she married Captain Daldy. Mrs Amey Daldy lived in Shamrock Cottage in Selwyn Road, Howick, from 1894 until 1903 with her husband Captain WC Daldy. They called their holiday home Shamrock Cottage after his ship, the 85 ton schooner which he sailed from Liverpool to Auckland in 1841. Amey and William Crush Daldy were active members of the Beresford Street Congregational Church in Auckland, now called Hopetoun Alpha. In 1885, Amey joined the New Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union campaigning for abstinence or at least temperance in consumption of alcoholic drinks. She was prominent driving around Auckland in her horse and buggy gathering signatures for women’s rights and having spirited debates with businessmen. Her actions were supported by Captain Daldy, a prominent businessman, ship owner, Member of Parliament and first chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board and promoter of New Zealand Insurance Company. Amey Daldy found living at Shamrock Cottage very peaceful and a haven from their busy life in Auckland. They used the cottage at weekends and

holidays with their four children, coming by ferry boat to Howick Beach wharf. Amey said of living in Howick, “There was nothing like it for blowing cobwebs away.” Amey founded the Women’s Franchise League and was its first president campaigning for the right for women to vote and be elected to parliament, although Amey maintained, “Women could not do much without men.” Cartoons, especially in the NZ Graphic, show her with a high collar, hair swept back and a fashionable white lace bonnet. Amey Daldy was a prominent pioneer supporting disarmament, principles of full employment and equal pay for men and women. She proposed that it be illegal for any person under 21 to enter a brothel. She wanted equal division for men and women in divorce and women to have half a husband’s wages paid directly to the wife. She opposed restrictions to Asian immigration, and believed love and sympathy should be used to reform criminals. Amey was a strong, popular chairperson and speaker and one of New Zealand’s leading suffragettes who lived in Howick. 125 years ago women won the franchise to vote and they said, “Let not babies, the wash-tub or even dinners prevent women from going to vote.” Amey arranged care of children at each polling booth while their mothers voted. Amey said to win the campaign against a male-only parliament, suffragettes had to be “wise as serpents, harmless as doves.” Shamrock Cottage was in a neglected state in 1968 when the Howick Historical Society started its restoration with Saturday working bees and the welcome assistance of Howick RSA. A street collection for funds was held plus donations from Sir William Stevenson and others. A history of the cottage was written. It was the second oldest building in Manukau or Howick, opened in 1847 and in 1848 reopened as the Royal Hotel with excellent meals with stabling for horses and accommodation. It is now a popular café in Selwyn Road. The two cypress trees outside today were in an 1860 painting now in the Howick Historical Village. ■ Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

commemorative service is being held on Howick’s Stockade Hill to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Howick Local Board is partnering with the Howick Returned Services Association (RSA) for the special November 11 event. “It’s important to remember and commemorate but we also want to celebrate an event that marked the end of the First World War,” says Howick Local Board chair David Collings. “It is wonderful that the RSA wanted to mark this occasion, which I am sure will be very special, and we wanted to support that.” Howick RSA’s newly appointed president Ray Sangster says that while some people may go to the large service in the city, he is expecting a great turn out for the Howick event. “There is something extra special about having a service up here.” Past president Mike Cole has been heavily involved in organising the centenary event and says the service will be followed by an open day at the RSA for the public to use the club facilities. At the same time, he says it is important to remember that while Armistice Day is something to celebrate it is still a som-

Coastguard saved our lives, say old mates Long-time friends and boaties Isaac Hurst and John Vander Hoeven of Nelson know this all too well the important role the Coastguard plays. Out for four hours of fishing at their secret spot on a normal Saturday morning, they had caught their quota of fish and John was reeling in his line for the last time when a freak large swell came up under the boat and flipped it right over. Their simple four-hour trip quickly turned into a life-threatening 11-hour ordeal. Married father of four Isaac Hurst says: “It was the perfect storm of events. Our fishing spot is usually busy with boats but that day there wasn’t anyone else around. We only saw two other boats, both were a long way off, one was a container ship. “The boat wasn’t big (14-foot) and the conditions meant we both got washed off the hull a couple of times. We saw a boat with a search light come out to look for us around 5pm but it was looking in the wrong direction. We were waving and shouting but they were too far out. “Then it started getting dark and we were both getting very cold. It was another four hours before we heard the motor of another boat and saw the flash of the search light moving across the water. We started waving and shouting again and this time we thought we’d been seen, but it wasn’t until we could see it was coming towards us that we knew we’d been found. “At that point we just flopped down, no trace of energy left and thought ‘thank goodness’. I really don’t think we had much left, we were on the edge of being able to hold on. I got very emotional and it all hit home when the Coastguard volunteers came alongside and asked if there were any children with us. It made me realise if my grandsons had been on board how much worse it would have been. They wouldn’t have made it, none of us probably would have made it. John

and I aren’t really cuddly men, but I’ve never hugged another man for as long as I did when I got pulled aboard that Coastguard boat.” Wayne Harrison, Coastguard Nelson volunteer who was part of the rescue mission, explains just how lucky Isaac and John were by having another mate, Brent, who knew where their ‘secret spot’ was. “It took us 40 minutes to reach the area given Brent’s description and intel,” Wayne says. “We searched for a solid three hours in the rain, all six of us were soaked. We kept rotating to ensure those looking at the water didn’t get too fatigued and miss something. We were using all our skills and trying to stay positive despite things not looking great. “Suddenly we got a return on the radar which made us all take notice as we knew there were no rocks in that area. As we got closer, we saw them in the beam of our light, on top of the upturned hull. “We got them on board, assessed their condition and started to warm them up with blankets. We kept talking to them both, all the way back to the mainland to make sure they were okay. It wasn’t until later, after our crew debrief, that I realised what an effect the whole night had on me, we’d made a real difference to someone’s life, and family. “To me that night makes everything we do, all the hours and the training, worth it. That one rescue was enough to keep me wanting to do this for as long as I can.” Isaac’s wife Mallisa Hurst will never forget the moment she got the phone call her husband and John had been found alive. “We rushed down to where Coastguard had brought them in and found them in the ambulance. Isaac was very emotional, it was just so good to see them. We are so appreciative of everything Coastguard did that night to find the boys and bring them back – alive. Isaac still talks about just how incredible those volunteers were.”

Help Coastguard save 19 lives today E

very year, nearly 7000 New Zealanders – 19 a day on average – are brought home safely from our seas, lakes and rivers after an emergency. This prevents 18,000 children from losing their mum or dad, 11,000 grandparents from losing their grandchildren and 1.6 million of us from losing someone we know. And it’s all made possible by Kiwi institution Coastguard New Zealand, a charity run by over 2,000 volunteers all dedicated to saving lives, and families, on the water – a place where things can go very wrong, very quickly. From October 15 – 28, Coastguard are appealing to the New Zealand public for donations to help them continue their life-saving efforts in providing

professional marine and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. Patrick Holmes, CEO of Coastguard NZ, says: “Coastguard volunteers give over 300,000 hours of their free time every year to make sure Kiwis can enjoy New Zealand’s magnificent waterways, secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong, someone highly organised, trained and equipped will be there to help. “Our volunteers will spring to the assistance of anyone in trouble – from a boat not starting or helping a kayaker or surfer in difficulty, to rescuing a man overboard, responding to an emergency flare, locating a drifting vessel or attending to a medical emergency at sea. “October is the time when

Kiwis get back on the water and we want everyone to know we’re their best mate – and not be scared to call us. “At the end of the day, we don’t just save lives, we save families.” Coastguard New Zealand urges Kiwis heading out on the water this summer to keep these three key messages in mind: ■■ Always wear your lifejacket ■■ Take two separate waterproof forms of communication ■■ If something goes wrong, alert Coastguard as soon as you can – never be afraid to contact us ■■ Coastguard is a charity and with limited government funding it needs your help. You can donate to their cause here: www.coastguard.nz/ donate-now/

Thank you Jami-Lee Ross Thank you Jami-Lee Ross for having the courage, at enormous personal cost, to expose the corruption of the National Party by huge donations being used to buy political influence and even influence the selection of candidates for parliament. “Bridges Corrupt” headline – shoddy reporting Picking up today’s Howick and Pakuranga Times (October 18), once again I am totally unimpressed with your sensational front page headlines. Last week it was “Nutter sets own room alight” for which the Mental Health Foundation have already taken you task (refer lead letter to the editor in today’s paper). This week you lead front page in big bold red letters with “Bridges ‘Corrupt’ ”. What sort of editor are you to open your publications with this sort of tabloid trash? Yes, you qualify it in the small print by stating that MP Jami-Lee Ross has accused Bridges of this, but

has treated you, deliberately releasing allegations designed to discredit you and to your headline pretty well sides with Ross to make a big bold red statement about Bridges which is far from proven, especially given today’s revelations (October 18). In fact, it is merely an allegation made by my local MP who has gone feral on his party and showing up as untrustworthy, vindictive, unhinged, and a hypocrite – talk about having no moral compass! None of us, including the National Party, would have predicted what would unfold when this story broke a couple of days ago, but sensational headlines just don’t cut it with me. You have jumped the gun here – shame on you. I am a National supporter but can tell you right now that Jami-Lee Ross won’t be getting my vote at the byelections.

place you under terrible psychological pressure. There is no excuse for mistreating anyone the way you have been slandered and abused. I wish you well in your continued efforts to expose corruption. I hope and pray that this sorry episode will help to reform our politics and return to a more honest, open, caring, and decent way of doing politics.

Rev Chris Sullivan

He is an embarrassment to himself, our electorate, the National Party and the Government. No respect whatsoever for the way he has behaved. I’m totally disgusted with him and his gutter-level politics.

■ Editors note: Headlines are designed to be short, sharp and punchy. Both of the headlines you refer to utilise a word used by a protagonist in the news stories, hence the quote marks. Incidentally, if we’d produced a paper the following day, the story would very much have focussed on the newest revelations, those levelled at Jami-Lee Ross as you’ll see at www.times.co.nz. Indigenous artists will perform at Taiwan Day this weekend. Photo supplied

Taiwan Day offers fun and feasting C

entred around the theme of ‘Fun, Flavours and Friendship’, Taiwan Day on October 27 and 28 at the Aotea Square will include live music, multicultural performances, craft workshops, calligraphy, photographic exhibition, silk knotting, dragon dancing and a traditional fashion show. There will be food galore and plenty to feast on including entertainment and fun activities reflecting Tawian’s diverse culture. While the Taiwanese are believed to have immigrated to Aotearoa mostly in the late 20th Century, their arrival in New Zealand goes back a little further

than that. “According to historical studies, the ancestors of New Zealand Maori originated from Taiwan over a thousand years ago,” says lead organiser Stella Lu. “This is a celebration of the old and new, and will give people a chance to experience a little bit of the land where Maori come from.” The live entertainment will include musical performances by Taiwanese indigenous artists Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal and Suming Rupi. Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal is an actress, television host, songwriter, singer and an avid student of culture, known for her

highly-popular album Sun and Moon and the hit film Panay. Suming Rupi, meanwhile, is known both as a member of the band Totem and as a solo artist. Suming has received credit for introducing non-indigenous people to indigenous cultures through his craft. There will be a line-up of stalls serving fried chicken, bubble tea, dumplings, fish ball soup, mochi, Taiwanese sausage, and hawker rolls. With 200 prizes up for grabs, including round-trip tickets to the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, this is an event not to be missed! ■■ www.taiwanday.nz

ne of Auckland’s largest property management agencies is backing a call for regulation of the property management sector. Barfoot & Thompson is one of 26 organisations to have signed an open letter on the subject, delivered recently by Anglican Advocacy to the Housing Minister Phil Twyford, Justice Minister Andrew Little and Associate Justice Minister Aupito William Sio. The call coincides with the Government’s consultation on proposed reforms to the Rental Tenancies Act 1986, which does not currently include the regulation of property managers. Director Kiri Barfoot says

the company has long-voiced the need for more regulation of the sector, to help ensure both landlords and renters are better serviced and protected. “Property managers have significant responsibility and are trusted not only with people’s assets, but the place they call home. “Not to include the regulation of property managers in the Government’s current reforms would be an opportunity lost.” She says Barfoot & Thompson already meets the priority criteria, including: ■■ Requiring property managers to hold a relevant qualification and undergo training via their REINZ-endorsed courses; ■■ Requiring all team mem-

bers to follow company-wide property management protocols and standards, and meet the expectations of all company policies; ■■ Managing all tenancyrelated funds via an audited trust account; and ■■ Providing an effective complaints procedure. Not all property managers meet the standard There is currently no Government mandated training, qualifications, licence to operate or otherwise. “We are potentially leaving a significant gap in the proposed rental reforms, which will allow less scrupulous operators to continue to take advantage of unsuspecting or misinformed landlords and

renters.” She says with more than a third of Kiwis now renting, and demand continuing to increase, NZ needs to take this opportunity to ensure it has modern systems in place to meet the needs of both renters and landlords. “Alongside the mechanics of setting up and managing tenancies, a big part of the role is providing expertise and support to landlords, helping them take the right steps to provide good quality and compliant rental properties. “Tenants can also be better supported by professional property managers who are well-trained and versed in protocols for inspections, reviews, dispute resolution and so on.”

Home ownership subsidies should be rejected The Salvation Army’s home ownership subsidy agenda would be a disaster says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union. Taxpayers’ Union Economist Joe Ascroft says, “The Salvation Army is right when they say housing costs are a big issue for thousands of families around the

country, but the solution to that is reforming the RMA – which acts like a regulatory tax – so the construction of new homes is easier and cheaper. If housing supply is constrained by regulations, subsidies will just cause price growth to accelerate, which would benefit existing home owners at

the cost to hard-working taxpayers.” Ascroft says home ownership subsidies were tried in the United States in the 10 years prior to the global financial crisis. “The subsidies encouraged families who were not well equipped to take on mortgages to do so anyway,

in the pursuit of expanding home ownership,” he says. “The policy was a disaster because when families failed to meet mortgage payments, banks and the Government were saddled with significant debt burdens, with taxpayers eventually forced to bail out the financial sector.”

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 25, 2018 — 23

Ioane inspires Auckland D

alton Papalii’s promotion to the All Blacks ahead of his immensely gifted Auckland team-mate Akira Ioane was because of his strong work ethic, both as an outstanding tackler and attacker. It helped that the 1.93m, 113kg recently turned 21-year-old can play both openside and blindside flanker and probably No 8 if called upon. Few, if any, forwards in New Zealand, can match the powerful Ioane’s attacking gifts, blessed as he is with speed, balance, a snappy sidestep. sharp swerve and a strong fend. But what the national selectors wanted from him was better defence and a higher work rate which he belatedly delivered on home turf in Auckland’s impressive 38-17 Mitre Cup premiership semi-final triumph against Wellington last weekend. Scoring two tries to cap a fine all-round game, Ioane’s man of the match performance bodes well for Auckland’s rising hopes in this Saturday’s Eden Park final against formidable Canterbury who have won the title 10 times in the last 11 years. Relieving them of it won’t be

easy. But in winning all but one of their games this season, Auckland have gelled into a strong team with a workaholic forward pack and exciting backs. Halfback Jonathan Ruru and first-five Harry Plummer have combined well inside the incisive centre pairing of TJ Faiane and Tumua Manu. Faiane has been absolutely brilliant at times in making breaks and setting up tries for impressive fullback Jordan Trainor and wings Salesi Rayasi and Melani Nanai. At 105kg, left wing Rayasi has scored some stunning tries and with Auckland Rugby offering fans free admission for Saturday’s final, a good crowd should be at Eden Park as the home team chase their first title since 2007. Meanwhile, Pakuranga club supporters will be hoping that the talented Papalii gets some game time on the northern tour despite probably being ranked fourth flanker behind the more experienced Ardie Savea, Liam Squire and Matt Todd. It won’t happen overnight but he has the size, speed and allround game to make a big impact on the international stage.

For sheer enthusiasm it is impossible to match the 26,000 red flag waving Tongan fans who packed Mt Smart Stadium to watch their team do battle with the world champion Australians. What a pity New Zealand league’s top brass preferred to send the Kiwis to play England in America earlier this year rather than give them a chance to avenge their 2017 World Cup loss to brave Tonga Having been beaten by the Kiwis, Australia had too much backline class to secure a 34-16 win which rather flattered them after powerful forwards Tevita Pangai Junior, Jason Taumalolo and Sio Siua Taukeiaho led a bruising fight-back. But the real winners were the Tongan fans who sang both teams’ anthems and continued singing and cheering throughout the encounter no matter the changing fortunes. We can expect more of the same when the improved, newlook Kiwis belatedly host Tonga

This year’s Boxing New Zealand National Championships in Christchurch was a standout for east Auckland, with Pakuranga College students bringing home two golds and one silver medal. Wendell Stanley proved too strong for his East Coast opponent, with the referee stopping the contest in the final round of the welterweight final. Kheva Potatau controlled all the three rounds against his Central North Island opponent to win the Junior 52kg title. Tyler Moran also took silver in a hard-fought performance against Wellington’s Toby Jensen, ending in a 3-2 split decision. All three boys attend local outfit Revills Boxing Gym. President Lance Revill is immensely proud of the their achievement: “This is a record year for Revills and the boys have worked really hard.”

T

imes have been tumultuous for the Football Ferns recently, with off field dramas becoming centre stage in the New Zealand media. The fallout from the departure of coach Andreas Heraf has become an unwelcome distraction in the players preparation for the upcoming OFC Nations cup in November. The team is currently without a coach, and the search and selection process is underway at time of writing. The New Caledonia-based tournament acts as a qualifier for the World Cup which will be held next year in France. One player keen to secure a seat on the flight to Noumea is Howick local Steph Skilton. Skilton was a member of the New Zealand under 17 side at the 2010 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, making two appearances. She played in all three of New Zealand’s games at the 2012 FIFA

U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan where they were eliminated at the group stages. Most recently she has been tearing up the US college scene as a member of the Syracuse Orange, an experience Steph describes as “Crucial to my development as a footballer”. Steph has had a taste of full international honours after debuting for the Ferns senior side in 2014 in a Cyprus Cup clash against Switzerland.

She is currently plying her trade in the middle of defence at centre back, after starting her career as centre forward, followed by a stint in the midfield. The upcoming games would see her locking horns with the likes of Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Cook Islands. In the absence of traditional rivals Australia who follow a different route to qualification via the ASEAN Football Federation, Skilton

sees Tahiti as “the most likely to give us a tough challenge”. The coaching issues aside, 2018 has been a pioneering year for women’s football in NZ with female players achieving a world first. New Zealand Football and the New Zealand Professional Footballers’ Association came to a decision over a new collective bargaining agreement which offers pay parity with the men’s All Whites. The agreement offers match pay parity, equal prize money, equal rights for image use and business class travel while representing NZ. Steph is excited by the developments in the women’s game, and welcomes the “long overdue changes for a side that is ranked inside the top 20 in the world”. When coupled with other initiatives like the new Kate Sheppard Cup, and expansion to two full rounds of the Women’s National League, the future is bright for the beautiful game.
