'It was arson'
man has been arrested and charged with arson following a blaze which destroyed a Somerville home on Monday. Police have confirmed that a 24-year-old male was charged on Tuesday afternoon and he was due to appear in the Manukau District Court yesterday. Part of Somerville Road was closed off from 4pm on Monday as fire fighters worked for
several hours to get the blaze under control. Witnesses said people could be seen fleeing the home with their pets. At the height of the fire, neighbouring properties were evacuated and black smoke billowed from the house. It was visible from several kilometres away. Four fire crews from Howick, Papatoetoe, Mt Wellington and
Otara were called to the blaze. Police and St John’s Ambulance service were also on hand as was the police Eagle helicopter which could be seen circling the property from the air. The home is 250 metres from Somerville Intermediate School. The property was monitored overnight to ensure it had been completely extinguished. Dave Hatton, station officer
Howick Fire Station, says there is intensive damage to the property. “We delivered one low pressure delivery and two high pressure delivery. There were no injuries but the fire had been going on a wee while before we were called. “The fire was very developed by the time we reached there. It is under investigation with the police, I can’t say much now.”

Natasha Unkovich from Howick. Meanwhile, Bo was very pleased that the Howick Local Board had recently granted $30,000 to The Howick Children’s Charitable Trust which runs the Howick Santa Parade. She mentioned there will be free entertainment all throughout Picton Street, a free sports “give-it-a-go” section on Uxbridge Road, and a bursting Moore Street with a huge range of free entertainment, a parent area for massages and some amazing hot rod and police displays. Bo is still keen and open to anyone in the community who would like to help on the day in any way. “Many hands make light work, and we’ve already been blown away by the generosity of our wonderful community, not only financially but for giving up personal time to be invested in this event,” she said. “The kids and families are going to be “wow-factored” this year for sure, with a wellplanned action-packed free family day out.” There’s only 11 weeks to go! ■■ For more information please visit www.facebook.com/howicksantaparade or email howicksantaparade@gmail.com.

This is rocket science! S
omerville Intermediate student Gareth Choo won three prizes at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Science and Technology Fair with his original and technically advanced project ‘Electromagnetic Propulsion Launches the Future’. Gareth’s science project that explores technology for cleaner transportation, won first prize in the Physical and Material World Category, Best in Innovation, Invention or Investigation and the Science Award Trust Prize. Electromagnetic propulsion is an emerging technology that has many applications including launching rockets into space. Like many young people these days, Gareth found inspiration on YouTube. “I found the world of electromagnetics and clean propulsion,” he says.“I built an electromagnetic launcher to test different materials for speed and efficiency. I discovered I could alter the electromagnetic flux and help projectiles gain speed and efficiency with magnets and springs.” The judges of the fair were impressed by Gareth’s level of understanding and his project’s technical skill. The budding scientist used an Arduino microcontroller to accurately measure and record the speed of the launches. “I conducted several tests to see if I could come any closer to finding an energy efficient
solution for reducing carbon waste in train systems.” This isn’t the first project Gareth has done using Arduino. Gareth has been participating in Young Engineers Workshop Programs for three years where he built up his knowledge and experience in electronics. At the Young Engineers Workshop, Gareth has been exposed to many types of technology and engineering but has developed a real inter-
est for electronics. He has built a few impressive projects from scratch including including a motor, a torch that runs on dead batteries and an autonomous robot. Gareth says, “Winning this prize has inspired me to want to focus more on technology and science to find innovative solutions to problems that we face in the world.” Najam Haq from Young Engineers Workshop with Somerville Intermediate students Gareth Choo who won three prizes at NIWA. Howickians’ special reunion Twenty-nine years ago, long-standing Howickians were bemoaning the fact that the only time they met for a catch-up was at a funeral of one of their own. The idea was born to hold a special annual celebration, at a pleasant venue, for the purpose of sharing memories and photographs, acknowledging those no longer with us and generally having a jolly good chin-wag and a cuppa with old friends, colleagues and neighbours from Howick Village and surrounding districts. Thus the Howickians’ reunion was born and an annual get-together became a regular not-to-be-missed event for 29 consecutive years. This year is no exception. On Sunday, October 7 at Howick Bowling Club in Selwyn Rd, Howick, old and new members will meet in the name of friendship. (Entry - ladies a plate and men $8). On the day, they will be acknowledging the sterling work done by Pamela Taylor (neé Newton) as Convenor of the Howickians for many years and welcoming

Howick cousins ready to ‘rule’
Cooking up a storm in the kitchen is second nature to Howick locals, Enna Ye and May Chen. But can they handle the heat of competition when one of New Zealand’s most popular reality shows hits home? Household names, Pete Evans and Manu Feildel will again host My Kitchen Rules New Zealand (MKR) as teams from throughout the country vie to prove the proof of the pudding is actually in their hands. “I partnered with Enna because we’re a strong team,” says May. “We’re really close; we own a side business together and have similar upbringings. Cooking has always been a part of our lives from a young age. With that, I thought we could handle any challenges [MKR] would throw at us.” Specialising in Asian fusion dishes, food is in the blood of these 20-something cooking cousins. As first generation Kiwis, they intend to show exactly how East and West can meet. “We’re going to win through sheer hard work,” May adds. “That’s what we’ve been taught growing up, and that’s what’s going to get the winning result.” The new season of MKR NZ screens from 7.30pm, October 7 on TVNZ 2.

Capital Gains Tax – has the Eagle landed? By Craig Nevatt The Labour Government-appointed Tax Working Group (TWG), headed up by former Labour Minister of Finance, Sir Michael Cullen, is currently undertaking the fifth major review of the New Zealand tax system in the last 50 years. The TWG has a wide brief, but its key purpose is to provide recommendations to the Government that will improve the fairness, balance and structure of the tax system over the next 10 years. The TWG released its interim report inviting further commentary on September 20. The hot topic of the review has been the consideration of Capital Gains Tax (CGT). The main driver behind the implementation of a CGT had been the perception that the tax benefits swaying investment

of capital and wealth, firmly ruling out an implementation of wealth taxes, but leaving CGT on the table on the basis of fairness. The report goes as far as discussing specific
design features and identifying two main options, either taxing realised gains that are not already taxed, or taxing certain assets on a deemed basis (akin to a risk-free rate of return method). The family home, and the land under it, would be exempt under either method. The proposed risk-free rate method smells a lot like a wealth tax which would be payable annually on a base asset value. The risk-free rate would be set at a level to reflect perceived average annual increase in asset values. The need to fund the cash tax payments arising from a CGT applied on this basis should be particularly concerning for anyone holding investments in property or business! Another concern is the proposal that should a CGT be implemented then capital gains from assets

which the CGT applies would be caught from the implementation date, and valuations of all assets would be required on that date to assess the base price that capital gains would be calculated on. The TWG is still forming its views on the implementation of a CGT and will complete a comparison between the best proposed methodology and the status quo to determine its ultimate recommendation. Whilst no conclusive recommendation has been made, it appears that today, New Zealand is one step closer to a broad- based CGT. Feedback
Freedom camping a bad idea This is a crazy idea (Freedom campers not welcome, Times, September 13). What is the council thinking? If you want to camp, you must find a camping park with the facilities to support this. Look at the bad press that freedom campers have received in New Zealand over the past few years: bad behaviour, illegal dumping of waste, crowding out beach areas, not following the rules...a recipe for headaches. Sure, there may be many such campers that are responsible but that is not the point. And a trial that David Collings refers to may have gone smoothly, but that is not the reality. Many are young and will take advantage. Note that east Auckland is already stressed with the influx of people to this area. Beach facilities and parking are stretched without adding freedom campers to the mix. Our police office is not open over weekends. Who will manage the complaints that are sure to arise? May sanity prevail and may our councillors show some leadership here please.
Steve Lincoln, Botany Downs
Thank you for the support

take on the challenging role. Auckland Council is making decisions that will affect our city for generations and Howick has entrusted you with the role of ensuring they provide the best possible outcome for our community and city. Thank you for everyone who voted for me, I am humbled by every vote received. Thank you for your belief in me and my campaign. We sent a strong message that east Auckland needs to be heard at the council table. Commiserations to the other candidates. It was a good campaign and, as a voter, I was pleased by the range and quality of candidates on offer. Despite our differences in opinion, you were all great company and should be proud of your results regardless. The low voter turnout is disappointing but, sadly, not surprising. Many people feel that their voices are not heard and that action is too slow. The decisions surrounding Stockade Hill are symptomatic of this disconnect - locals ignored, misunderstood and left with broken promises. We have a lot of work to do to rebuild this trust if we are to lift voter engagement and we must. I’m also worried about the number of people reporting their voting papers never arrived. Thank you to everyone who helped throughout my campaign for your tireless support. A cam-
availability. I return to work to continue my full time job for a company I love working for. I will continue to be actively involved in my community and be a vocal advocate for east Auckland.

No choice with Super City
I refer to the recent letter from Michael Phillips regarding nonnotified developments in Howick. In his last paragraph he apologises to the people of Auckland for voting for the Super City. He must have been extremely lucky to have been able to vote on the creation on the so called Super City. I and, I think, the rest of Aucklanders were not allowed a vote on this matter. This was something foisted upon the people of Auckland by Rodney Hyde giving them no say at the ballot box. Bring back local government!

hen PDP Denture Studio of Pakuranga said they were moving onto bigger and brighter things, they weren’t joking. Now under the name Howick Village Denture Studio, the brand new studio is vibrant, colourful and makes you feel right at home. The friendly team are ready to greet you from the minute you walk through the doors. While the studio might have a new name and look, clients can still look forward to the same incredible service and the welcoming atmosphere they have fallen in love with over the years. Howick Village Denture Studio is kitted out with cutting edge technology and only the very best materials from Europe as well as an onsite laboratory where all dentures are made. They are proud that all their work is NZ made! “We anticipate our client’s treatment here to be something that they have never experienced before,” says team Leader Leah Taylor. Hanging on the wall is a stunning commissioned piece by Taranaki artist Ross Bennett aptly named “Restoration.” The piece reflects what Howick Village Denture Studio strives to achieve in restoring peoples’ appearance and self confidence. The denture studio has been ensuring people have a beautiful smile for more than 20 years, with clients from all over the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, United States and the Pacific Islands. She, alongside the rest of the team, take the time to get to know their clients, understand what they are after and strives to make dentures that are as natural as possible. “The real skill is in all the subtle imperfections... that’s what makes them look real, and what makes our work so special” she says. “We are committed to restoring

o communicate, Maori used gongs from the top of their pa sites such as on the top of Ohuiarangi-Pigeon Mountain. The gong was a suspended slab of wood or a hollow log hit with a stout wooden club. This was used as an alarm to those working on agricultural plots or fishing nearby. The sound of a gong could be heard several miles away. When the first European settlers or Fencibles arrived in Howick in 1847, they were very disappointed at the barren treeless hills which were 15 miles from Auckland with no road. Few Fencibles could afford to travel to Auckland by the ferry. A few years later the Anglican vicar Rev Vicesimus Lush complained that it took him seven hours to reach Auckland with his horse and cart, which included crossing the Tamaki River on the punt. Even in 1900, Howick horsebuses took 3.5 hours to Auckland. The early settlers felt abandoned at Howick but no one took any notice of complaints, and some said “half a loaf was better than no loaf” and accepted their lot. Letters sent to the Governor were free of postage charges. The Fencibles’ 10 hour working day started at 6am with a bugle call, sometimes using an adapted cow’s horn. There was no town clock and few had watches so

the bugle or school bells were the time-keepers. The Fencibles had their own newspaper, called The Pensioner’s Gazette started in 1848 and produced by Dr Bacot, who lived in Bleakhouse Road, and Sgt Ford at Panmure. They criticised the Governor in late 1849 so were prohibited from publishing. From 1849 to 1857, Ngamapu - the Maori mail-runner - ran barefoot to Auckland twice a week, returning on Wednesday and Saturdays taking 4.25 hours over the swamps of Pakuranga and scoria road up to Remuera and on to Auckland. Ngamapu lived next door to Howick’s first postmaster Fencible James White’s cottage in Elliot Street. Until 1862, it was the receiver of letters who paid the postage, not the sender of mail as it is today. In 1863, all men aged 16 years to 45 years had to enrol for military
duties during the Waikato War and the Stockade was built on Stockade Hill. Semaphores were used to communicate from Howick Stockade with the Otahuhu Camp and Panmure Stockade, above the Panmure punt. Semaphores used mechanical arms of wood on a pole or post with prearranged coded messages. The first telephones arrived in Howick in 1909, although Auckland had had telephones for many years. Crawford’s Howick buses had the telephone number “1”. The telephone lines were initially a single wire on the top of a pole wound onto a single insulator. Whitford had a pigeon-post service from Newton Road, Auckland to Nathan’s Ostrich Farm, Whitford. They even heard the Boer War news by pigeon post. Teacher Mr Judkins at Howick School taught his pupils to make crystal radio sets, even making their own crystals in the 1920s. In World War II, during blackouts, members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides delivered messages by bicycles without torches at night. An automatic telephone exchange, then cell phones which take photos or emails, or ‘apps’ are today’s wonderful connections. ■ Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

Looking back at the journey of Pakuranga Medical Centre which has come a long way, she says, “Ten years ago we merged three medical centres to combine our strengths and were very excited about the new project till the Auckland City Council announced the AMETI project. We have been looking for the right place, the right building, ever since the council announcement! “We have a very good team working with us that have a great respect for the Pakuranga and surrounding areas and the people living there. “Now the end result is this spectacular project that we have thrown our lives in to make it all happen,” she laughs. The centre will have a formal opening in December, with the Minister for Health David Clark, high profile guests, people from the District Health Board and Primary Health Organisation attending it. In the meanwhile, long-time patients have been popping in just to say hello and have a peak of the family focussed, spanking new facility in the heart of Pakuranga area. Some of the services Footflex Podiatry offers include nail and skin, biomechanical and footwear assessments; orthotic therapy, as well as ingrown toenail surgery. Aleesha graduated in 2009 with a bachelor of Health Science degree in Podiatry and also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine in 2012.
Since setting up her practice in Half Moon Bay six years ago, Footflex has grown considerably. This led to the opening of a second location in Pakuranga two years ago. Due to the increasing demand, Aleesha now has another podiatrist join her. With Chathuri Gunasekera joining the well established practice, Footflex Podiatry located at the brand new Pakuranga Medical Centre at Cortina Place, opening on October 1, 2018 takes appointments from Tuesday to Friday. Chathuri graduated with a bachelor of Health Science degree in Podiatry in 2016 at AUT.

Full Moon celebration T
he 35,000 year old traditional Moon Festival was celebrated with great gusto at Lloyd Elsmore Park at the weekend and Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there to capture it. Hosted for the very first time in east Auckland by the Howick Local Board, one of the oldest and most popular Chinese festivals had a great turnout. There were around 50-60
performances by various cultural groups including Chinese, Korean, Indian, Russian, Romanian and Chilean which kept everyone entertained for more than six hours. Another designated area showcased demonstrations of tai chi throughout the evening. Organised by local board’s Ethnic, Migrant and Maori Affairs portfolio lead, Peter Young, with help from the

founder and chairperson of the Pakuranga Chinese Association Barry Hung, there was plenty of street food as well as Moon Cakes, a traditional pastry delicacy filled with red bean or lotus paste to go around. The round shape of full moon represents perfection, reunion and harmony. There was certainly that at Lloyd Elsmore park on Saturday night.

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good steak, chips and a beer. At The Landmark Bar and Eatery in Panmure, simple is best. In the last 12 months new Chef Ian Adams has taken a whole new approach to the Landmark’s trademark menu and the community can’t get enough. Rather than a complete revamp, Ian says he has evolved the menu to give customers a true pub dining experience, that still includes all the staples that they love. Ian is a specialist pub chef and says it is no easy feat. “Pub dining is very different from other aspects of cooking. “You have to think on your feet, be ready to adapt the menu at any time and take basic foods and ensure they are so packed full of flavour.” But with 30 years industry experience, he knows exactly what it takes to make a delicious meal. “We have really gone back to basics and the focus now is on simple, wholesome foods that are packed full of taste.” Ian says it’s the little things that set them apart such as making their own pizza sauce for their authentic style New York pizzas or the precise combination of herbs and spices on their steak. And the revamped menu has certainly been making an impression.

Spiller joins world chess presidential election in Europe
JH10924-v2
E
very four years the World Chess Federation (FIDE) holds elections amongst its 189 member countries to determine a president and officials to oversee the running of World Chess. The next elections will be held on October 3 in the Georgian Black Sea resort Batumi and will be fiercely contested between three candidates. Local chess organiser Paul Spiller (who is also the vice-president of the NZ Chess Federation and president of the Oceania region) will be Oceania’s first representative in a presidential election, running for the position of vice-president on the ticket of English grandmaster Nigel Short. The other two tickets are headed by Russian Arkady Dvorkovich, the recent chairman of the organising committee for the FIFA World Cup, and by current FIDE vice-president Georgio Makropoulas. “The main reason behind the decision to stand is to bring about much-needed reforms and transparency to the running of world chess and also to promote the development of chess in the Oceania region,” said Spiller.

“Oceania is a difficult region to develop because of the geographical isolation and financial difficulties of many Pacific nations.” Over the last few years, and with the help of the Asian Chess Federation and the Kasparov Chess Foundation, Asia Pacific equipment and other resources have been distributed to help set up Chess in Schools programmes and to help with coaching but there is a lot more to be achieved, he said.
“In the immediate future I am helping with the organisation of the New Zealand Open Championships and inaugural Oceania Youth Championships, both being organised in January in Auckland followed by the Oceania Championships in Guam in February. Spiller left for Batumi on Tuesday. Before that he was seeking re-election for the presidency of the Oceania Zone which will be contested a few days earlier at the Asian Continental meeting.

There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. To prepare outdoor areas for every weather condition no matter how adverse, Shades Direct should be the first port of call as it specialises in outdoor awning solutions that add space, style and value to the home. Designed and engineered on New Zealand shores, Shades Direct’s range of quality and versatile outdoor products is suited to both commercial and residential applications. One of Shades Direct’s most popular products is the Outsider awning system. Fabricated from a mixture of

marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. Yay... Franklin Scooter 100 challenge a great success T
he Pakuranga PlaceMakers team’s Franklin 100 Scooter Challenge for Blue September on Saturday was a great success, with 30 riders taking part and more than $7000 being raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Free PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing was also available for males at the event, with 16 men having their first ever test on Saturday as a result of it being on offer to them. Rowan Toms, branch operator at Pakuranga PlaceMakers, says the fact a number of local men were PSA tested for the first time had to be one of the best things about the event. “This is what it’s all about – we want to save the lives of Kiwi men and just a quick blood test is all it takes to get a prostate cancer check – it’s such an easy thing to do and we feel bloody good about playing our part in raising awareness around that,” he says. He is adamant the Pakuranga PlaceMakers team will continue to build on the event, and he’s already starting planning for 2019. “We’re aiming big next year – our goal is to get 60 new guys PSA tested, and have 100 riders. The
tember and the Prostate Cancer Foundation,” says Toms. PlaceMakers, principal sponsor of Blue September, has raised more than $1.9 million in the past eight years and is again gearing up to contribute towards funding ground-breaking research projects, support services for survivors and their families and year-round education campaigns. One man in New Zealand is diagnosed every three hours, one
or more die each day and more than 60 per cent of survivors reporting having no symptoms when diagnosed.

event was terrific, and we want to grow it even more so we can continue to raise awareness and do our bit for the health of men in our area,” he says. Saturday’s event was the first Blue September fundraising event of its kind and involved participants driving 50cc scooters around the Franklin area, completing numerous challenges such as oys-
ter shucking, egg and spoon races, and driving drills. The event was followed by live entertainment and auctions at The Franklin in Beachlands. “It was a team effort, with key sponsors and supporters of the event including The Franklin in Beachlands, Clevedon Oysters and the Beachlands Police, all helping show their support for Blue Sep-

Auckland offer Blues some hope W
Agnew’s Angle
Auckland are playing a better game than the Blues thanks to new coach Alama Ieremia.
Lock Patrick Tuipulotu will be the third All Black in the pack and prolific try-scoring No 8 Akira Ioane and No 7 Blake Gibson are highly regarded. Although the loss of Jerome Kaino’s experience will hurt, the depth is there to produce a strong pack of forwards. The return of Ma’a Nonu as 33-year-old Sonny Bill Williams’ midfield partner, offers great experience but is a gamble with Nonu turning 37 next year, four years
after he starred for the All Blacks in their 2015 World Cup campaign. On that occasion he scored some amazing tries when SBW came off the bench to produce some exquisite off-loads. Unfortunately the luckless Williams has played little rugby because of a series of injuries since the 2016 Rio Olympics. This year he’s played just six Super Rugby games and one test against France. Should either of the veterans fail to go the course, the impressive Fai-
ane is capable of stepping into the breech and doing a fine job. Hopefully coach Umaga will return classy speedster Rieko Ioane to the wing instead of experimenting with him in the midfield. Ironically, Auckland are playing a far more cohesive game than the Blues have managed thanks largely to their more accurate passing which is also a feature of the Super Rugby champion Crusaders. Meanwhile the appointment of coach Noeline Taurua and captain

She is maintaining Merit for her topic tests and internals so far this year. She feels it is because you gave her a solid foundation last year which has taken her well into this year.” For a complete list, go to www.brainstormtuition.com

Laura Langman has given the Silver Ferns a much needed boost despite starting the Quad Series with a heavy loss to England. That was followed by a massive win against South Africa (who took England to the wire) and a brave 60-55 loss to the champion Australian Diamonds whose international rookies rose to the occasion spectacularly. The inability of the Ferns to combat the height and accuracy of shooters Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett proved the decisive factor. While the lively Langman offered the midfield snap and direction and Maria Folau goaled beautifully against a tight, robust defence, the Diamonds had too much speed and cohesion throughout the court. However it was a massive improvement on the Ferns’ dismal Commonwealth Games failure although coach Taurua will know that this Australian team looks set to rule the roost for a long time. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
TEACHING STYLE:
Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!” Fees During Term: Casual $ 50 per hour 10 Hours $450 ($45 per hour) 20 Hours $800 ($40 per hour)

ith six Mitre Cup rugby wins to date, unbeaten Auckland are playing a superior pass and catch game than the Blues have managed for too many fumbling years. That is a tribute to new coach Alama Ieremia who has among his assistants experienced former Blues and All Blacks coach, Sir Graham Henry. Making a good fist of captaining the team is 23-year-old Pakuranga second-five Tinoai Faiane who, along with flanker clubmate Dalton Papali’i, was one of the stars in the latest 31-30 triumph against Taranaki. Halfback Jonathan Ruru and goalkicking first-five Harry Plummer combine nicely and there is plenty of attacking thrust offered by centre Tumua Manu, fullback Jordon Trainor and wings Salesi Rayasi and Melani Nanai. There is a lot of talent among that lot but most will struggle to make the Blues’ starting 15 next year when head coach Tana Umaga will have the highly regarded Leon MacDonald and Tom Courtney as his assistants. The acquisition of North Harbour and Chiefs All Black prop Karl Tu’inukuafe will present the Blues with a powerful front row along with Ofa Tu’ungafasi and James Parsons.
