Yang says those who donated money to a givealittle page following her husband’s tragic death are “the angels in [their] life”. Dr Jacky Lam, who was first on the scene of the crash, set up the givealittle page for the family to help cover Hu’s funeral costs and relieve the financial burden of losing his income. More than $160,000 was donated by 3618 generous donors. “Thank you everyone for all the

generous acts, words and donations,” Yang wrote. “Our blissful family of four was completely unprepared for such a tragedy. Alan was our rock. It has literally felt like our sky has fallen. I don’t think it is possible to realise how much your spouse is carrying for you until they are gone. “We’ve had an amazing group of very supportive group of family, friends and colleagues. They have been there for us 100 per cent from the moment the police showed up at our doorsteps. It is with their encouragement and also the thoughtfulness of Dr

Jacky Lam that the givealittle page was started. Dr Lam, whom we had and have never met, reached out to us and has done so much for our family.” Yang says she was initially hesitant to have a givealittle page set up, fearing increased publicity on the accident may impact their two children. She says it wasn’t until a few days later that the reality of their financial situation without her husband’s income dawned on her. “The public’s generous support has been incredible. In addition to the funds, which will be a tre-

hree local students from two schools have been named as Premier Scholars following the release of the NZQA Scholarship results last week. Saint Kentigern College’s Andrew Chen and friend Daniel Mar were named as Premier Scholars while Macleans College announced Yang Fan Yun was also named a Premier Scholar. Only 11 were named nationwide. Saint Kentigern is the only school this year with two Premier Scholars. The awards recognise secondary school academic excellence of the highest order Andrew, who featured in the Times last week after achieving the maximum score in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma examinations, has also been accepted for a place at Oxford University. Whilst Andrew studied towards the IB Diploma, Daniel undertook NCEA. Both boys also sat NZQA Scholarship exams in seven subjects, remarkably gaining sholarships in all seven, with each gaining four classed at ‘outstanding’ level. However, the 14 Scholarships between them this year aren’t the sum total. Both students have punched above their weight in scholar-

ship exams; in Andrew’s case sitting these exams since Year 11 and amassing a total of 13 Scholarships, whilst Daniel has been awarded a total of 10 Scholarships over the last two years – that’s 23 scholarships between them. In addition, Andrew was named as the Top Subject Scholar in the country for Statistics – the second time he has topped this subject! He also achieved the top possible mark of 45/45 for his IB Diploma, one of only five students in New Zealand to do so. Andrew has represented New Zealand for three years at the International Mathematics Olympiad. These two have been friends since starting Saint Kentigern,

with shared interests in robotics and premier debating. Both were college prefects. Yang Fan has a long list of academic achievements and extra-curricular participation and attainment to his name. He held a number of student leadership roles within Macleans College including house and school prefect. Yang Fan completed a number of university mathematic papers - all with A grades. In 2018 he was selected to represent New Zealand at the Biology Olympiad and travelled to Tanzania and Malawi to undertake a two-week long research expedition. He was also selected to represent New Zealand at the International Econom-

ics Olympiad in Moscow and attained a Gold medal. He was awarded the special prize for achieving the highest mark in the entire Olympiad for the Economics section. This achievement placed Yang Fan amongst the top economics students in the world. Yang Fan is a talented student of commerce. In 2018 he was part of a team that placed 3rd at New Zealand’s Monetary Policy Challenge in Wellington, and 2nd in the National Schools Business Case Competition. Yang Fan was a cellist in the Macleans College Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonietta Orchestra and sang in the Men of Macleans Choir. He is also a talented ora-

tor and debater. In 2018 he earned the trophy for overall best speaker of the Auckland region and was part of the winning team at the New Zealand Schools Debating Championships in Wellington. He is a member of the Howick Youth Council. Meanwhile, another St Kents student won NZQA recognition. Christopher Dirks was named as Top Subject Scholar for Visual Design and Communication. Christopher was only Year 11 last year when he took on the Scholarship paper more usually intended for students in Year 13. Not only did he pass as a Year 11 but he was awarded the top mark in the whole country.

Karaka berries can kill dogs D

og owners are being warned about the risk of karaka tree berries. Auckland Council has joined veterinarians in emphasising that the berries are highly toxic to dogs and consumption can be fatal. Karaka trees are native to New Zealand and are abundant in public places throughout Auckland including parks and reserves, private properties and street plantings, said council. The trees pose the greatest threat to dogs between summer and autumn, as the berries ripen and fall to the ground. “The karaka tree has bright orange berries up to 4cm long, mak-

ing it very distinctive. It can grow up to 15 metres and has thick dark leaves,” a council statement said. “Residents should be aware that there may be karaka trees in their area and make use of alternative locations when walking dogs. “Signs of karaka berry poisoning include confusion, weakness, vomiting, hind leg paralysis and convulsions.” There can be a delay of 24-48 hours between berry consumption and symptoms. “If you suspect your dog has ingested karaka berries, contact a vet immediately,” council said. poisonous plants is available on the New Zealand National Poisons Centre website https://poisons.co.nz/. Dr Natalie Rogerson, from Sommerville Veterinary Centre in Howick underlined the importance of pet owners being vigilant and acting quickly. “If an owner sees their pet chewing or eating a karaka berry, it is vital they take their dog straight to the vet. The pet will not be showing any symptoms yet, but it is still imperative medical attention is sought,”

she said. “If the pet is brought to the vet within the first 1-2 hours of ingesting the berries, the veterinarian can induce vomiting. “If successfully expelled from the system, generally no further treatment is required.” Unfortunately, the symptoms can be numerous and varied, Dr Rogerson said. “They can range from gastrointestinal – vomiting and diarrhoea to severe neurological signs – weakness, paralysis, seizures, even death.

“If there is any suspicion a dog has had access to karaka berries and is showing any of the above symptoms, a veterinary assessment is essential. There is no antidote. Once symptoms develop, intensive supportive care is commenced. “The prognosis is varied dependent on how much has been ingested, the size of the dog etc,” she said. “This toxicity is life-threatening and the earlier treatment is commenced, the better the chance of a full recovery.”

Youngsters celebrate Chinese New Year The sound of beating drums filled the air at KiNZ Care and Early Learning Centre at Mission Heights as children, teachers, parents, families and specials guests gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year. The children had created beautiful craft work, sang songs and participated in the dragon dance to wish everyone good luck and prosperity. The dragon head was made with the help of the children

from everyday material to showcase the centre’s sustainable practices. Staff from the Auckland Kindergarten Association Executive Leadership team joined in the celebration. The Chinese Community Group from Highland Park enchanted everyone with their bright traditional and colourful outfits and synchronised dancing movements. Children and families were

tempted to join in the graceful dance. No function in an early learning centre is complete without food and everyone enjoyed an array of tasty treats which showcased the diversity of Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland. “At KiNZ Mission Heights every child’s culture and identity is celebrated which promotes Children’s self-esteem and sets them up for a journey of

lifelong learning on a positive note,” says centre manager Sangeeta Lal. Four-year-old Athaleyah Vaipulu summed the day by claiming that she really enjoyed watching the graceful dance movements while four year old Xuanpai Hong said he loved the food. Young Yaj Maharaj was inspired by the dragon dance and went home and made his own dragon head with the help of his family.

tarbucks is returning to Botany Town Centre in late autumn 2019. Before closing its previous store, Starbucks was at the centre for 16 years as one of more than 20 stores around New Zealand. The new store at Botany will be the 23rd. Charles Belcher, CEO of Starbucks in New Zealand, says Starbucks has deep roots in the Botany community. “It was an easy decision to come back to the centre and we are very excited to be part of this newly-developed precinct. Like most of our stores, the Botany store had somewhat of a cult following, and since we closed we have fielded constant requests to know when and if we will reopen,” he says. “We have an amazing community of Starbucks customers at Botany who we can’t wait to serve again. With the new additions to the centre, Botany is going to become even more of a hub for the community than before. We are proud to be back and we hope the community will be as excited as we are.” He says it’s been a long time since there was a new store fit-out in New Zealand. “Starbucks store designs have developed considerably since we last opened or renovated a store in this country, so people can expect something quite different to what they have seen of Starbucks in New Zealand,” says Belcher.

While every effort is made to run the notices, volume and space restrictions may mean events may not run. Where publication of a notice is time-critical, groups should consider paying for a classified advertisement to ensure placement.

It was an easy decision to come back to the centre says Charles Belcher, CEO of Starbucks. Photo supplied

“Our stores are intrinsic to the Starbucks experience, and store design remains the strongest physical expression of the innovative thinking and creative spirit behind our brand. “Each location is unique, and each store offers a unique set of conditions that can inform the design. We believe that our stores are places for community, and our store has been designed with that in mind. So watch this space as we develop something special.” Botany Town Centre opened in 2001 and quickly became an integral part of the east Auckland community. Currently Auckland’s second-largest shopping centre by lettable area, the centre’s vision is to continue to be New Zealand’s pre-eminent town centre that incorporates quality retail, lifestyle and leisure offers, and an excellent investment opportunity for investors.

Feedback

Plaza management lack of releasing vacant shops Thank you for your interest into the current (retail store) vacancies at Pakuranga Plaza. Every week there seems to be more and more leases expiring and management increasing them to the point that the retailers are choosing to walk away (rather) than paying the new increased rent and, as a result, there are a lot of empty shops for a considerable amount of time . The Pakuranga Plaza management re-let one store 18months after that one had become vacant. What makes me laugh (is that) they have signs up saying ‘’support your local’. How can we do that when there’s nothing there? Management seem to be waiting for Auckland Transport before they will commit themselves. Unfortunately this doesn’t help those who have been a part of Pakuranga for a number of years. It would be great if you could approach Pakuranga Plaza management and see what you can find out which would give some a little hope. Pakuranga was a thriving little community. It would be great seeing a touch of that in the future

■■ The Plaza’s owners respond: GYP Properties Limited remains committed to the Pakuranga area and in delivering a vibrant new town centre. Our goal is to incorporate significant residential and retail buildings together with commercial, accommodation and entertainment activities to create a thriving community. The development plans for the town centre are underway and to avoid unnecessary design and redesign, we must wait till the Auckland Transport plans are confirmed as they are critical to ensuring an appropriate design incorporates the changes to traffic, parking, transport and access that may be proposed. Construction timelines must also be coordinated to avoid unnecessary disruption to stakeholders. To enable us to effectively work towards our plans for a new town centre, we require some flexibility in the leasing of tenancies to enable us to optimise our design scheme and develop the staging strategy required. Our master plan will be released once the resource consent process, anticipated to be sometime in 2019, is underway and we look forward to sharing it with the community.

Slow down and share the path On January 6 I was enjoying a bushwalk with my husband Robert. Halfway between Hayley Lane and the turn off to the Somerville shed, a runner, solid looking guy and at least a head taller, came towards me at a fast pace and with no inclination of slowing down. Unbeknown to me there was a hidden drain (covered by dried grass) so when I

moved to the side I stepped into it, falling to the ground and injuring my knee. It was a very narrow path and my husband who was walking three-or-so-metres ahead of me saw it all happen. The runner kept going but came back after 30 minutes or so to apologise. I was still so shocked and thinking of how I would manage to get up the many steps to the shed. Luckily, Robert managed to get a post to support me out of the bush. After 3 ½ weeks and having my knee strapped on many occasions, I have had to ice it daily, take painkillers, go without driving, attend specialists’ appointments, have an x-ray and am now waiting for the MRI scan next month to see what can be done. But I really miss my walking. Working three days at Honeybun Jewellers for nearly eight years, and having to be on my feet serving customers, I wish for people to please be more caring and share the path as I don’t want this to happen to anyone else.

Collision discussion

I agree with your correspondent that there are frequent English errors in both print and electronic media. The use of the word “collision” is not a particularly good example. In at least one dictionary (admittedly one which is published in the USA), an example of usage is “the car collided with a tree”. It is clear in this example that it is not essential for both objects to be moving in order to create a collision.

That aside, it has been wonderful to hear of the community support for the family who have been so hurt by this awful event.

Judy Lawry, Golflands

Pity the migrant workers

My heart goes out to these Chinese migrant workers that are cheated by Peter Li and the fees they have to pay for Peter Li’s lies as well as the hardship their families back home has to endure. Doubtless, it will take them at least a year’s pay of 40 hours a week, to offset the amount they are being cheated. For these migrant workers to have to borrow to pay the fees to the cheat so they can come and work here brings back memories of the early Chinese migrants that came to NZ to work so they can support their families back in China. So Peter Li made at least a quarter of a million cheating these migrant workers and created hell for them as well as their families. Seeing it’s time to review NZ’s immigration laws, review Peter Li’s residence application and in light of what he’s done, that doesn’t match up with good character, I would think it’s time to rescind his NZ residency permit. So he can go back to live in China rather than the high life he has here spending his ill-gotten gains from these migrants - and even NZ citizenship if he’s been granted one. By the way, China does not allow dual citizenship. It’s about time people learn that NZ does not tolerate criminality.

Watch out for cyclists!

Warming up for a scheduled group cycle along The Parade, Bucklands Beach, 8.25am on an overcast calm morning on Wednesday, January 30 (there were) only two vehicles in the vicinity at the time. Within a space of only five minutes, the said two vehicles - a female in a small silver car and a male in a silver SUV – made a right-hand turn to separate driveways in front of an approaching cyclist dressed appropriately in hi-vis yellow fluoro gear on a bright coloured bike, with LED flashing lights. If not for the cyclist’s forward thinking, of which the vehicle drivers were obviously not even looking, the outcomes could have and would have been of a very serious medical event. Not getting rego details was due to the cyclist’s recovery anger management control and staying upright. Holy moly…having survived the morning ride, the ride home was just as nerve-racking! At 11.45am, a male driving a white SUV exited the Half Moon Bay marina carpark, again without thinking or looking and just misses the back wheel of the cyclist. Whilst no contact was felt, a quick jump off the bike to speak with the driver sees him respond with quick thumbs up through the window and drives off! Almost home and a lady in a small blue car failed to observe a Wells Road compulsory stop and makes a right hand turn in front of the same cyclist! The moral of these stories is to ‘think before you blink.’

RSA’s new menu and plenty of entertainment Have you ever wondered when approaching Howick via Wellington Street what happens in that building with the flagpole out the front on the left close to Picton Street? Many will know that Howick RSA has been a hub for returned servicemen but now things have changed in keeping with the times. “If you were to think of a tree and the trunk – the core value has always been looking after and supporting the returned servicemen. Then the tree extended its branches and now encompasses the community. “With the new name, the club is a reflection of our extended younger membership,” says Scott Adams – secretary manager. Coming up in the next few months there is plenty happening at Howick RSA. On the cards is a Murder Mystery, Neil Diamond Tribute Show, Queen Tribute Show, Grease and Rolling Stones. Scott has circled ‘The Fawlty Towers dinner show’ which will be here in early March – join Basil, Sybil and Manuel for an evening of side-splitting comedy involving you as their guest. Whether it is dancing, Indoor Bowls, Snooker, Tai Chi, Mahjong, Quiz nights for Charity that take your fancy or a wide range of live bands to suit all ages—the event calendar is buzzing with activities and events that cater to all tastes. The Stockades restaurant has been whisked up to offer a range of dishes that break away from the traditional fare of carvery – though this will still remain as a

Art classes at Uxbridge A beloved local artist may be shutting down his studio for good, but budding artists won’t have to go far for his expertise. Tony Clarke is moving his classes back to Uxbridge Art and Culture Centre, where he first began his teaching career 19 years ago. For the last 16 years he has worked out of his studio in Pakuranga, spending hours teaching hundreds of students and staging numerous student exhibitions. You’ll be able to check out his classes at an open day at Uxbridge on Friday February 15. Tony will be there painting and is looking forward to meeting art lovers and painters alike. Tony teaches his students techniques to achieve the results they are looking for regardless of the genre and medium in which they choose to work. Many hobby artists have been able to take their art to a new level under his guidance. “A lot of people have been able to sell their work and many have won prizes in competitions,” he says. From February 21 his classes will be on at Uxbridge every Thursday and Friday. He hopes the friendly spirit and sense of community experienced at Ben Lomond Crescent will continue at Uxbridge. Retired engineer and new student Ron Tucker says, “Tony has taught me a method with clearly defined steps that produce the fine detail that I was looking for in an art class. The friendly small group classes provide individual tuition in an enjoyable atmosphere”. Tony will also run specific workshops at Uxbridge during term breaks. • The open day will be in Studio 2 at Uxbridge from 10am to 3pm.

8 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 14, 2019

Sickness and health of the Fencibles The Times continues its series by Howick historian Alan La Roche marking the 170th anniversary of the Howick region

T

he Fencibles were discharged from the British Army generally after about 20 years of service in tropical or unhealthy campaigns. Most were considered “worn out” although some were discharged with “chronic rheumatism” with enduring coughs and some with war wounds. But Fencibles had to be fit “for occasional military duties” and under 48 years of age. There was a doctor on each sailing ship with a hospital, nurses and full medical cabinets. A baker was on each ship and the food was good. All passengers were vaccinated against smallpox. Dr Mahon reported 37 cases of malaria amongst those waiting for the “Sir George Seymour” to set sail from Tilbury in August 1847. The nearby salt marshes had mosquitoes. The pensioner-soldiers suffered from rheumatic pains, catarrh, bowel complaints, and intermittent fevers (malaria). But by June 1848, after settling in Howick, they had all recovered. Auckland was considered a healthy destination with clean water, plenty of low cost food and a good climate. The doctor inspected wells and toilet arrangements. But alcohol was a problem and most smoked clay pipes. Dr Mahon came to Howick in 1847 with the Fencibles and lived in “Bleak House”. Dr Bacot followed in 1848 to minister to Howick and Panmure Fencibles and their families. He com-

plained about lack of work. The cottages were cold, damp, and firewood was scarce. In 1847 the first cases of whooping cough in New Zealand were seen in Maori with fatal results. Influenza, measles and scarlet fever had similar consequences as Maori had no immunity. Alcohol was the most common cause of death, often associated with drownings. Next was consumption [TB or tuberculosis] and syphilis. In NZ in 1850 there were 23 cases of syphilis per 1000 of population, but in England there were 181 cases of syphilis per 1000 population. Accidents involving horses were common, especially riding at night. Blood-letting was still practiced for headaches, pain or fevers. For bleeding, cobwebs helped wounds to clot. Most cottages had toothache cures [oil of cloves on a rag pushed into a cavity, or kawakawa leaves]. Many used “folk remedies” that they had used back home in Britain. Fifty children died of scarlet fever in 1854, probably brought on the “Ann” with Fencibles who settled in Otahuhu. Rev. and Mrs Lush of Howick lost three children within nine days and had their parsonage fumigated by burning sulphur. If Rev. Lush and Fr. Fynes had not visited families with scarlet fever, the death-toll may have been much less,. About 4000 Maori died of scarlet fever in about 1854. In 1864 another scarlet fever epidemic in Panmure

had the children isolated in the old barracks as a “hospital” on Stockade Hill where five died. The barracks on Stockade Hill would have been freezing. Those who came to New Zealand lived much longer with healthier lives than their counterparts in Britain. Widows were offered a free passage back home if their husband died but none returned home. Accommodation in Howick was far better than that in Britain.

Big summer music tour begins The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra celebrates summer with performances of four uplifting and unforgettable classical works for its biggest tour in 2019. Classical Journey, in association with Ryman Healthcare, will be performed in nine centres from Kerikeri to Blenheim in February. Led by NZSO associate conductor Hamish McKeich Classical Journey features works by orchestral greats Rossini, Haydn, Prokofiev, and Brahms, written during or inspired by the classical period, 1730-1820 “I’m excited to tour this programme around the country with the Orchestra. This is bright and cheerful music for summer which will appeal to both regular concert-goers and those hungry to experience the NZSO for the first time. They won’t go away disappointed,” says McKeich. Classical Journey opens with Italian composer Rossini’s intoxicating overture to his opera L’Italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers), which McKeich says is the perfect complement to the works which follow from Haydn, Prokofiev and Brahms. “Haydn is the father of the symphony and his Symphony No. 104 London, the last symphony he wrote, has influenced many composers. He’s inventive and he moves from one interesting idea to the next.

Hamish McKeich

He was always taking risks. It’s witty and wonderful music.” Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 Classical Symphony, which premiered in 1918, is one of his most popular works. Prokofiev wrote it the style of Haydn more than 120 years after the London symphony. “Prokofiev’s First Symphony is brilliant and equally inventive. While inspired by Haydn, it’s distinctly Prokofiev and full of beautiful lyrical melodies.” Classical Journey closes with Brahms’ moving Variations on a Theme by Haydn. The composer based his eight variations and a captivating finale on what at the time was believed to be a chorale theme attributed to Haydn. While modern scholars now believe Haydn wasn’t the original composer, it has become one of Brahms’ most admired works. “Brahms doesn’t copy Haydn so much as turn it into a Brahms’ piece. Each variation has its own character, and all based on that one theme. It’s a stunning composition,” says McKeich.

Clarks Beach win COVIC Capturing time in a capsule Veni Vedi Vici Classic By FARIDA MASTER

The 2019 season of the COVIC golf got underway in brilliant blue sky and sunshine. It was play for the first time at a brilliantly presented Whitford Park Golf Club course on Monday 11th February 2018. The VVV Classic is a combined stableford pairs event, with the aggregate scores of each COVIC club’s best three teams, counting toward the annually played for Veni Vedi Vici trophy. Eighty six players fronted to test the efficiency of administration staff, who did well to get the field underway on time. The course remained as it had been set up in preparation for Auckland pennants competition the day before, the only relief provided the vat golfers being Clean and Place through the green, as is standard for COVIC play. It was the Clarks Beach Golf Club team who proved to be the eventual victors, with a combined three team aggregate score of 221 points, well ahead of HuntlyWaiterimu (208) and Pukekohe (207) in second and third. They were followed by Waiuku (194), Wattle Downs (190); Awhitu (188), Hauraki (187), Onewhero (187), Maramarua (185), Waikare (dns). The difficulty presented by the Whitford Park course set up was reflected in the average club team score being only 196 points (32.7 per player). This was well down on last seasons 216 points (36 per player) at the Waikare course

venue. Playing off a 25-handicap, it was Clarks Beach’s Owen Shaw who was on fire from the start. He opened with two net eagles and after six holes had already amassed 13-points and 21 at the turn. Although he suffered from nerves around the turn he steadied to score two more net eagles for another 21-point half and was home with 42-points. This was clearly the best score of the day. During his round Owen was overheard to say “I have never played this well even on my own course.” His partner Alan Gomas started poorly but eventually found his mojo and played well to return 37-points for 7th place. Together the pairings combined 79-points saw Shaw and Gomas as the best pairing of the day. Second best team was Clark Beach teammates Neville McSweeney and Keith Sanders (74), ahead of Pukekohe’s KJ Kim and Alan Houghton (74) in third place by way of count back. Nearest the Pin competition on the Par 3 3rd and 11th holes were won by Wattle Down’s Graham Skilling and Pukekohe’s Philip Garside respectively. Two’s were achieved by Onewhero’s Les Johns on the 3rd hole and Huntly-Waiterimu’s Terry Broughton on the 11th hole. The next COVIC event is Round 1 of the 2019 Shield competition. It will be played at the Waiterimu Golf Club on Friday March 8.

When Pauline Bolton first suggested that they capture time in a capsule, she didn’t think the management at Edgewater Retirement Village would take her seriously. At that point of time she had no clue about the amount of work and research that goes into putting memorabilia into a capsule that will be opened in 50 years. Soon a committee of enthusiasts wanting to contribute to a time capsule was formed. A lot of brainstorming and talking to the conservation department at the Auckland Museum later, the nifty team of seniors were wiser. “We were told that we couldn’t use paper clips, plastic, metal, leather, wool, wood, ordinary paint, oil or rubber,” says Pauline who mooted the idea. “There has to be no moisture or acids.” Bev Macnaughtan who is an ace at scrapbooking and has spent many man hours creating lots of beautiful scrapbooks for the village, says that they had to use acid free paper with no staples or paper clips. “We had to be careful not to include anything that would disintegrate.” While there were a few naysayers, the go-getting team wasn’t going to allow a couple of discouraging remarks dampen their enthusiasm. Instead they divided the jobs between them and got working on things that were of interest to them.

Bev worked on fashion and the style quotient of their times while Adrienne Jury, a skilled artist, did what she does best, sketch cartoons and impressions of the retirement village for posterity. “How we do our banking, transport, medical care, films photographs of various activities, trips, sport, TV guides and the Herald as well as the Howick and Pakuranga Times have all be fitted into the glass capsule,” says Pauline. Helen Paton says this was their chance to have a bit of a laugh and a gossip...even as they wondered where the time capsule will be put down. Everyone contributed to it depending on the talent they had — and everything was acceptable, they say. The glass container was sealed with a marine grade sealant to

stand the test of time. There was plenty of plumber’s tape to go around it. A specially designed box to keep the jar stable and safe was built by grounds and maintenance manager Bruce Pholprasert. Bruce built a special planter box with a plaque and fixed the time capsule at the bottom so that it is easily accessible. The planter now has a special place of pride at the retirement village which is currently going through major renovations. “Fifty years later, the residents of the village will open the capsule and discover how we lived,” smiles Pauline who is currently looking for another major project to take on.

Open letter from Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Jami-Lee Ross – Still Working for Botany

This week Parliament started again for 2019. It’s timely to write to you in the Botany Electorate about issues on the horizon, and some of the work I am doing on your behalf as your local MP.

addressed, and much needed operations for children and seniors being approved. My office at 309 Botany Road is open and staffed, and we are still available to help local people during normal business hours. I am also personally accessible and you are welcome to call me on 02 BOTANYMP. No issue or question is too big or small to discuss.

crime rates. Worst of all, a generation of young people are now priced out of the housing market because we did not reform the RMA to open up more land for housing. The city council that we established still puts too much expensive red tape in the way of development and doesn’t control costs.

Firstly though, some personal and health related matters became a distraction near the end of last year. I was unable to work as effectively for you during that time. I have dealt with those issues and am back working full time. I will continue working each day to prove to you that I am still the same strong local voice you have known, working for Botany and representing you in Parliament.

Priorities for Botany

■ Housing affordability

As your independent voice for Botany, I can speak up on these issues now instead of being forced to toe a party line. I have stood up to Mayors, CEOs and Ministers in the past, on behalf of my constituents. That same fight and passion has not left, and I will continue to use it on our community’s behalf.

Working for Botany

■ Better transport links

My contract is with you

A decade and a half ago when I was first elected to public office here in Howick, I became known for being a loud and unwavering advocate on local issues. I have been proud to be involved in achieving wins and fighting for local people. This is what still drives me to get up each morning.

■ Strengthened law & order

My contract is with you as local constituents first and foremost, and should always trump any political party matters. I ask for the opportunity to prove my value to this local community again through the hard yards of being Botany’s voice and representative. I will front up to any group, large or small, to discuss local or national issues of the day, no matter how contentious.

As your MP I will be focussed on issues involving:

■ Cost of living ■ Mental health improvements

Turning words into action

As your elected representative I have been involved in issues like developing the Meadowlands Multisport Facility, funding the Star of the Sea building restoration, planning Barry Curtis Park and the Ormiston Town Centre developments, and pushing for the Eastern Busway, now under construction. Along with others in the community, these are the types of issues that first drew me to public service, and still motivate me to continue representing Botany today.

We are reaching the half way point of this term of government. Housing affordability, the need for more public transport and better roads, and the cost of living all still need addressing. The current government is saying all the right things, but little will change until we see words turn into action. We need more houses being built, we need to see transport investments start to pay dividends, and we cannot sit back silently while working parties propose new taxes or put new costs on New Zealanders.

Over the years my Electorate Office has also helped and supported thousands of constituents. Seeing a person’s life improve or change after we have been able to help is the most satisfying part of any MPs job. I have seen families reunited, urgent housing needs

As a now former-National Party MP, I also feel an obligation to be more up front about the areas where the previous government did not get things right. We didn’t get the likes of immigration under control and we did not give Police enough resourcing to stop the growth in

I will continue working for Botany and use the knowledge and experience I have to help solve local issues for our community. Please judge me on a 15 year track record of work, past and present, not on a month where personal and health related matters became a distraction. I’m looking forward to continue seeing you in the community and on your door steps, working for Botany with the same conviction and energy as I have done over the past fifteen years.

Transforming lives of children with magical musical theatre By FARIDA MASTER

C

hildren’s musical theatre is a powerful art form that can transform children’s lives - and who should know that better than Susanne Dell and Lynette Leggett who have practically devoted their lives to helping children bring out the creative best in them on and off stage. Sitting in their new spacious studio at 90 Springs Road, East Tamaki with ample space for dance, rehearsals, costumes and a grand piano, the women have been helping children and adults learn theatre craft. They are visibly excited about the new premises of the Children’s Musical Theatre Studio. “Though our home is Howick, and we’ve been operating from there for the last five years, we used to do only one production a year. Now that we’ve moved to East Tamaki which is quite a good hub, we will be working on four major productions a year.” Proudly pointing to the dance floor, frosted windows and the grand signage outside, Sue - a trained dancer who started teaching tap dancing when she was only 13 - says she has worked in theatre for more years than she can remember. Lynette is a talented primary school music teacher with many years of musical direction and stage management who has returned from a sabbatical overseas in Mexico.

Together they take immense pride in instilling confidence in children and seeing the magical transformation in them as they take the curtain call. “We make sure that in all our productions everyone has a chance to shine,” they say. Currently they are auditioning for the cast of upcoming productions, The Addams Family for 13-16-year-olds, and the all-time favourite Disney’s High School Musical Jr., for 8-12-year-olds. With a cast of 20 for The Addams Family and 60 for Disney’s High School Musical Jr, they say that every child deserves to have an opportunity. “It gives us such a buzz to know that children develop singing, dancing and acting skills while making new friends and having

fun on stage.” Making sure that they start discovering the love for the performing arts from a very early age, the Dots for Tots class (from three months to four-year-olds) is for parents and babies to learn songs, dancing and the beat. “Parents are the first learners,” says Lynette. “We give the parents a repertoire at home so that they can work with their child at home.” For preschoolers there is Tap for Tots – tap classes for two to four-year-olds. There’s even a seniors dance class for adults on Wednesdays from 11am to 12noon as well as age group choirs for five-yearolds who may be stage shy but are happy to be introduced to tools of musicianship.

Bucklands Beach Yacht Club was officially formed back in 1949 by a few pioneering sailors looking for a base for their racing, although sailing and racing started off Bucklands Beach back in the early thirties. The families in those days were not necessarily financially privileged but rather inspired to be creative and ingenious in supplying themselves a sea

worthy craft for family and neighbourhood enjoyment. This fellowship still flourishes and has rubbed off through the generations of many sailors who sail from Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Fast forward 70 years and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club provide a diverse range of boating and social interests. The club has its own marina and haul out facilities with a hardstand enabling members to perform maintenance on their own vessels.

Members enjoy a full calendar of boating and social events, including cruising to various destinations in the Hauraki Gulf. The social activities include the famous brunch on the Spit, where the top half of the dress is formal to go with casual down below, trivia nights, play money casino nights, Halloween and Christmas parties for the kids, a club picnic for all. “We continue to foster the young and old through our Sailing Academy where ‘Learn to Sail’ courses are

YEAR OF THE PIG

New Year Resolutions

New Year celebrations come thick and fast this time of year. We’ve just welcomed in 2019 and the Year of the Pig; very soon it will be the end of March and we’ll be heading into new financial year 2019-20. That’s a lot of opportunity for New Year resolutions but at Pat Callinan Accounting, they are only interested in one: supporting the local community to get ahead of the game with their taxation and accounting requirements.

As your business grows, Pat and team will be there to navigate the increasing accounting complexities, and recommend solutions that complement your internal processes. Pat takes time to understand the particular circumstances surrounding every single client and the advice is always specific, considered and practical. He is particularly focused on taking the fear-factor out of accounting. “We will guide you through all your options and obligations in a simple, jargon-free and down to earth manner,” he says. “Also, we will always tell you straight. We know the local community well enough to know that it can see through flannel a mile away. “All our advice is direct, honest and thoroughly focused on the unique situation of the person we’re talking to”.

Clockwise from above: Pat Callinan and a few of his team – Melt Louw, Jim Frear and Richard Lyon. Photos by Wayne Martin

Peace of mind

Whether you are a business owner, or a private individual with several different income streams, you are legally obligated to declare your income to the IRD and pay annual tax on your earnings. However, the process of organising accounts and being fully up to speed with current legislation can be a time-consuming and often daunting prospect, especially if you are not naturally inclined towards bookkeeping or financial management. At Pat Callinan Accounting, they understand that not everyone loves numbers as much as they do. Their purpose is to relieve you of your accounting burden, and give you peace of mind that the numbers are in safe hands so that you can focus on either what you do best or what you’d rather to be doing!

A trusted partner

Pat and team have been serving Howick and the local community for over 16 years, and are proud of the long term relationships they have established. They are committed to helping all their clients take control of their

accounts, no matter where they are on their journey, and have the expertise within the team to handle every situation – from brand new business ventures looking for startup advice to established business needing the next level of accounting service, and everything in between.

No time like the present

So, whatever your accounting need

or situation, Pat Callinan Accounting is here to help. However, there is a word of warning for anyone feeling anxious about the impending year end: time is running out. The team will always do its best to ensure maximum returns for you and your business but everyone needs time to do a job well. If you are at all concerned, Pat urges you to act now – no accounting tangle is too tricky to unravel but it won’t happen on its own, so call in the experts before you run the risk of scrutiny from the IRD. It’s only a matter of time before they find inconsistencies, and they definitely don’t make any allowances. To make an appointment, or speak to someone confidentially about taxation, GST or other accounting matters, email office@patcallinan.co.nz or call (09) 533-8420.

Cast of California Suite take a break between rehearsals.

Four playlets all in one suite With five productions lined up for the year, Howick Little Theatre’s 2019 opening offering is California Suite, written in 1976 by the prolific American playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon. It comprises a set of four stories, all set in Suites 203-04 of The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. The opening playlet, Visitor from New York, is about a divorced Manhattan couple who meet up to discuss their teenaged daughter who has left her mother to live with her successful screenwriter father in LA. The bickering couple are forced to decide what living arrangements are best for their girl. In the second, Visitors from Philadelphia, a Jewish husband awakens to discover a drunken prostitute in his bed. With his wife en route to join him in LA, he’s faced with the dilemma of hiding all traces of his uncharacteristic indiscretion. The Visitors from London features a first-time Academy Award nominee English actress Diana Nichol and her husband, Sidney. She is in deep denial about the true nature of her marriage of convenience, and while preparing for her moment in

the spotlight, her mood fluctuates between hope, panic and despair. And finally, in Visitors from Chicago, while two affluent bestfriend couples are on a much-needed vacation, an injury to one of them during a mixed doubles tennis match compromises their friendship. This creates an entertaining ending to a quartet of almost-farcical comedies. Director Mary Gray has assembled a brilliant cast of both new and experienced performers to kick off yet another splendid season of plays at your community theatre. ■■ Season: Feb 23 to March 16, 8pm. ■■ Matinees: Feb 24 and March 1, 2pm ■■ Bookings: www.iticket.co.nz/ events/2019/mar/california-suite ■■ Phone: 09- 361 1000.

Cloak of honour for Pakuranga College principal M

ichael Williams, principal of Pakuranga College, was pleasantly surprised by a special gift he recently received of a beautiful korowai by the family of Cark Taka. A korowai is a Maori cloak, a symbol of prestige and honour. He proudly wore it for the Year 9 powhiri last week. Cark is a student of Pakuranga College who received the Te Ramaroa Maori Leadership Award for Senior Male Maori Student in 2018. The korowai was designed and made by Carl’s mother Shirley Chapman and the design incorporates the school emblem and the kapa haka uniform. Carl gathered the feathers himself from a farm in Maromaku. The family also gifted a carved ceremonial staff to the school and this was used by the Head of Maori Department Heemi Gilbert for his address at the powhiri. It was made by Carl’s father who also carved the plaque that currently sits above the doorway to the hall. As the traditional garment has to be stored out of sunlight, the college is planning to have the korowai professionally photographed and framed with some

Swapping suits for sneakers I

t’s time to dig out your running gear and swap your dress shoes for sneakers because the Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk is back.

Last year, more than 480 people took to the park for the annual event which is organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club. With a choice of distances available for both individuals and teams, there’s something for everyone. There is now an added 1km walk option for those who would like to participate but can’t manage the bigger distances. Entrants can choose to go it alone or in teams of four in a 5km walk, 5km run or 10km run on a stunning course beginning in Highbrook Park which is located at the end of Pukekiwiriki Place, off Kerwyn Avenue. The event, now in its sixth year, draws hundreds of people from the surrounding businesses every year as they vie to claim the title of 2019 champion – all the while raising funds for a good cause. While it’s aimed at businesses in the area, not working in Highbrook isn’t

a valid excuse. The event is open to everyone with entries just $20 per person. All proceeds from the event are donated to charities, with the majority of funds going towards a portable ultrasound machine for Middlemore Hospital’s maternity unit. Last year’s event raised a whopping $22,000 through participants and sponsors, with a range of charities benefiting. Held straight after work, the Fun Run and Walk is a great alternative to those standard after-work drinks – in fact, why not do both? After the exercise is done, hang around and recover with your team over a couple of drinks and a BBQ while enjoying the live entertainment on offer. Rally up your office team and head to www.highbrookrotary.org.nz to register and for more details. The Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk will be held on Wednesday, February 20th at 5:45pm sharp. Teams must be ready to go by 5:30pm.

As the traditional garment has to be stored out of sunlight, Michael Williams is planning to have the korowai professionally photographed and framed.

e didn’t just open a can of worms, but a bag full of insect specimens, invertebrates and menacing traps. Bug man Ruud Kleinpaste recently opened up a big bag of creepy crawlies at a teacher’sonly day at Owairoa Primary School. The former host of TV series Buggin’ with Ruud on Animal Planet had flown in from Christchurch to orient the teachers on being ecological detectives. Learning from nature is what we need to do if we want to rediscover the peace manual for planet earth said the self-confessed nature nerd. He encouraged teachers to work with children to build a database of bugs, plants, skulls, poos and insects saying there is a big disconnect. He stressed the importance of connecting kids with nature in the age of texting. “We are losing 150 species on the planet every day,” he said of the silence of the bugs. Use prisoners to create some excitement he suggested. “Put daddy long-legs spider with a while tail spider and see who wins. It’s like a Gladiator game.” Ruud shared some interesting fun facts as he spoke of robots on Mars being modelled on cockroaches. “It’s all about bio-mimicry. While the human species has been on this earth only for

150,000 years, the evolution of the earth has been for millions of years. Organisms are spectacular. The leggy pests are being used as models for futuristic explorers on Mars,” said the passionate entomologist. “We got to teach children about ecosystems and food chains where everyone eats someone else. Dung removal is the most important work on the planet but not many know that dung is big resource. It’s a protein-rich nitrogen source that organisms feed on. Insects live in a no-waste society. Everything is used or recycled by another creature.” Talking of restoration and conservation projects that schools should work on, he encouraged teachers to talk to children about farming and its history. “Maori

trained seagulls to get the caterpillars off their crops. There was so much wisdom in that. “Also, do you know that it is really tough to cut open a silkworm’s cocoon but in ancient China, an emperor’s wife was having tea in the garden and had a silk cocoon accidently drop in her tea cup. She discovered that due to the heat of the drink it started to unfold yard by yard. That’s how they started dropping cocoons in hot water to open up,” he said. Ruud who has been talking to a group of schools in east Auckland suggested that teachers and students outline a patch in the school and try and identify different organisms and pollinators that visit the school grounds — thus creating strong connections between nature and children.

he latest Property Institute/ Valocity Regional Insights Report shows that the Auckland housing market continues to soften, while all the other major centres are either stable or experiencing price increases. Nationally, the data shows a nationwide increase in median house prices year-on-year of 0.2 per cent, with a large 19.7 per cent drop in the number of properties being sold. The figures show a median sales price nationally of $530,000. Dunedin was the stand-out performer in terms of price gains, with a 12.9 per cent increase on median sales prices, followed by

Wellington (+9.3%) Hawkes Bay (+7.8%) and Manawatu (+5.6%). Auckland was the only centre covered in the report that went negative, with a median sales price decrease of 5.1 per cent year-on-year.

Who is buying? Nationwide, while the there is still an upward trend of new mortgage registrations to first home buyers, there is now evidence of a consistent increase in the number of people refinancing, with refinancers having the strongest upward trend compared to all registration types in the month of November.

When you look in to the certain regions across New Zealand, this is amplified.

Auckland: The city of sails has seen a decrease in the median sale price of 5.1% now sitting at $825,250. With this negative trend, it indicates that this may be also affecting the number of mortgage registrations, with the only positive movement being First Home Buyers, up 7.4%. With less competition from other buyer types, this seems to have created a gap in the market making it easier for first home buyers to enter. Refinancers remain relatively stable. PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY

(Never known to fail) O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, Assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Howick Pakuranga contest two more one-day finals By JIM ALLNATT

I

t’s been a huge week for Howick with the premier reserve men and premier women both playing in Auckland finals following the premier men’s victory the previous week. The Marie Raos Premier Reserve Men met Takapuna at Lloyd Elsmore on Waitangi Day and emerged narrow winners, despite appearing to be behind the eight ball for most of the match. No question this match kept a sizable crowd on the edge of its seats for the whole match. Put into bat on a greenish wicket, Howick’s batsmen found batting difficult and lost a wicket in the first over. However Captain Sam Borland and Keiren Mackenzie steered the team into a sound position with a 65-run second wicket stand before Borland was dismissed for 43. MacKenzie and Cam Neal kept the run rate moving with a 40 run partnership and Josh McGregor continued to steady the innings with 30 but after Mackenzie was dismissed for 43 there was a mid-order collapse until Mike Rose came to wicket to partner McGregor, scoring an accomplished 36. However once these two were sent back to the pavilion, the last three wickets fell in two overs and Howick’s 173 really did not look enough to stop a strong Takapuna side. Michael Greenwood made an

immediate breakthrough when Takapuna only had 9 on the board. However life got a lot more difficult after that as Takapuna’s batsmen started to work their way towards a winning score. However after Takapuna had reached 70/1 and really looked to be cruising, the local bowlers started to tighten their lines and pressure the batsmen. Mackenzie took two wickets quickly and this was followed up by a fiery spell from pace man Taine Jolley who took a wicket with his second ball and finished with 2/24. But the star of the show was Rowan Naude with his naggingly accurate off spinners. He took 4/17 in a 7.3 over spell including the final wicket when Takapuna’s last pair put on 37 runs. They came together at 98/9 and just played sensible cricket on a pitch which had settled down and as the runs came, so did the tension build. Finally Naude completed his day taking the final wicket and Howick had won its second championship of the week. Howick Pakuranga Premier Women played their final in the Pearl Dawson T20 competition at Colin Maiden. First they had to overcome a very strong Cornwall side in the semi-final which they managed to do by a narrow margin. Howick batted first scoring 120/6 in its 20 overs. Rewa Arora 21. Radhika Patel 27 and in-form Tash van Tillburg 41 off 28 balls were the main contributors. Cornwall could not

HSC ready for next generation of sailors Howick Sailing Club has a long history of sailing tuition, and that legacy is set to continue with the launch of the club’s new fleet of Learn to Sail boats. With the generous support of Howick Local Board, The Auckland Maritime Foundation, The Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate, NZCT and New Zealand Racing Board, the club has purchased eight new Optimist dinghies. The new boats replace Howick’s old fleet of Optimist dinghies which have seen more than 20 years of service. The old fleet has been used to teach thousands of children to sail through the club’s Learn-to-Sail programme and Waterwise programmes. The new boats have been sponsored by Hella Marine, Denham Bradwell lawyers and Howick Village Optometrists and can be seen off Howick beach most days during the summer months. Additional boat sponsorship packages are available to interested local businesses. Marc Frewin, Howick Sailing Club Commodore, said: ‘We’re thrilled to be

quite match this total with 114/6. Auckland Heart Skye Bowden 2/3 and Marama Downes 2/19 were the best of the bowlers. Even though the Howick Women had already played 40 overs in the heat, they showed no signs of it in the final against Uni-Waitak which is a sign of their growing maturity as a team. Uni - Waitak batted first and totalled 137/8 with White Fern Holly Huddlestone scoring 43 but Howick’s bowlers managed

Photo Jim Allnatt

to restrict the rest of the batsmen. Skye Bowden rose to the occasion with a magnificent spell taking 4/26. Howick’s batsmen made a valiant attempt to score the winning runs against a side full of representative players. Holly Huddleston with 5/15 caused the most problems. However the women scratched away at the total with small partnerships and with two overs to go were in with a chance only about

25 runs short of the score required. However the although the batsmen scored freely they only managed nine runs for each over and fell an agonizing 10 runs short. Tasha Van Tillburg made her second score of the day with 42 with support coming Rewa Arora 16, Lucy Western 17 and Skye Bowden 12. Howick’s Premier Women had every reason to be proud of their effort for the day and the improvement over the season has been nothing short of sensational. UniWaitak certainly knew they’d been in a match. The Marie Raos Premier Men were away to Parnell at Shore Rd and finished the day in a reasonable position. Parnell batted first and never really settled down again the Howick Bowling attack. Parnell were bowled out for 178 in 67.5 overs which shows how hard it was to score. Danru Ferns had a long bowling spell taking 4/57 off 17 and Matt McEwan took 3/53 off 19 overs. Taine Jolley returned parsimonious figures with 1/23 off 11 in his return to the side and left-armer Mike Rose took 1/14 off 11. Howick’s reply was steady with Daniel Young in on 34, having just been joined by Andrew Morrison who is on 11 and the score stood at 55/1 at stumps. Looking at the position of the other three leading teams in the Premier grade, both teams will need to be looking at an outright win next week.

Depth is crucial to successs Squad depth will be crucial to Super Rugby success this season with the playing time of All Blacks limited so that they can peak for the World Cup in Japan from September 20 to November 2. It’s a sensible plan given the fatigue factor which struck key players like skipper Kieran Read and champion locks Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick after a long, arduous 2018. However there will still be keen interest in how the Blues open their campaign on Saturday at Eden Park against the defending champion Crusaders, especially after Auckland stole Canterbury’s Mitre 10 premiership title in a classic final. With Leon McDonald taking over the head coaching role from Tana Umaga and Tom Coventry running the forwards, the Blues are expected to lift themselves off the bottlom rungs of the Super heap. Having beaten the Chiefs and Hurricanes in pre-season games, their growing confidence is not misplaced though the superbly drilled Crusaders should severely test their mettle. High hopes are held that the Sonny Bill Williams/Ma’a Nonu midfield combination will provide a trump card with Williams’ exquisite offloads setting the powerful 36-year-old Nonu on the rampage.

But the hopeful World Cup veterans shouldn’t expect a cake walk, especially if the Crusaders pit dependable Ryan Crotty and powerful youngster Jack Goodhue against them in what would be a titanic contest. Injuries have plagued SBW since he suffered a ruptured Achilles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He faces a genuine challenge from TJ Faiane for his starting place in the Blues side after Faiane’s heroics for Auckland when he repeatedly made scintillating breaks and set up tries. With Stephen Perofeta suffering a chest-shoulder injury in the 38-31 win against the Hurricanes which should sideline him for several weeks, Otere Black is expected to play first-five and will be eager to exploit the attacking thrust of champion wing Rieko Ioane. Black doesn’t have Perofeta’s nifty footwork, but he’s a heady player who brings a good kicking game to a backline that too often lacked cohesion and the passing accuracy that Richie Mo’unga, Crotty and Goodhue bring to the Crusaders. Karl Tu’inukuafe’s transfer from the Chiefs boosts a front row which can call on fellow All Black prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi and experienced James Parsons. Patrick Tuipolotu provides second row grunt for a pack that offers outstanding loosies in Blake

Gibson, Dalton Papalii and Akira Ioane. A brilliant attacker, Ioane must increase his workload to the level of Gibson and Papalii to do justice to his enormous talent and capture the All Blacks selectors’ attention. Having won his first All Blacks cap against Japan late last year, Papalii has the skill to cover all three loose forward berths. On Friday the Chiefs host the Highlanders and on Saturday night the Hurricanes face the Waratahs in Sydney. Howick Pakuranga cricket supporters had cause to feel proud at the contribution made by Colin Munro and Colin de Grandhome to the Black Caps’ T20 2-1 series win against India. In the final stanza at Hamilton’s Seddon Park, opening batsman Munro cracked 72 from 40 balls while down the order de Grandhomme blasted 30 from 16. With Sophie Devine (72) leading the way and Amy Satterthwaite (31) and Suzie Bates (24) offering good support, the White Ferns completed a notable 3-0 series win against the Indian women. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Pakuranga United edged in final

T

he Akarana Timbers Pakuranga United 7s team came up just short in recapturing the Middlesex Cup for a second time on the weekend, losing a very tight and tense final 14-28 to Norths from Wellington. Pakuranga went into the tournament having not played 7s since before Christmas but there were no signs of any rust as the team steam rolled through day one with victories over 2018 finalists Napier Old Boys Marist 24-12, 31-17 over Awanui and 24-17 against Feilding. “At the end of day one I thought we were one of the top three teams on display and as long as we stayed healthy and maintained our standards, I thought we would go close to making it to the final,” said head coach Mark Dickison. Day two saw those standards asked for by Coach Dickison immediately on display as Whangarei Old Boys Marist were dispatched 36-10 in one of the team’s best displays of the 7s season. This meant a semifinal against two-times defending champions and tournament hosts Eden. Pakuranga got off to a quick start scoring three quick tries in the first half to race out to a 15-nil early. Eden, however, are made of stern stuff and came racing back into the match with three tries of their own both sides of half time, converting

one to lead 17-15 with time nearly up on the clock. Coach Dickison played a master stroke bringing on veteran 7s player Aula Silipa to mastermind an attacking raid that swept the length of the field finally finished off by Tika Lelenga in front of some very excited PURC supporters to

claim a 22-17 victory and a place in the Middlesex Cup final for only the second time in the club’s history. Pakuranga started the final the way they had played the two days, immediately putting pressure on Norths to score quickly under the posts to take an early lead 7-nil. However the Norths side struck

back with two converted tries of their own to lead 14-7 at the half. After the half Norths again came out firing quickly racing to a game winning 28-7 lead with another two tries both expertly converted from the touchline. Pakuranga though came back in the final moments scoring one and

just being denied another try to finish runner up in the event. “Whilst disappointed, I am immensely proud of the boys for giving it everything that had over the two days, a little bit of luck and the bounce of the ball going our way and the result could have been different. “That said Norths were a class act and played the better of the two teams in the final and they totally deserve their victory, well done to them” added Coach Dickison. For Pakuranga United Michaile Van Wyk was named the Akarana Timbers PURC player of the tournament for his fantastic play across the two days by Coach Dickison. “Michaile played brilliantly but also is such a pleasure to coach as he takes what we teach him onto the field and puts it into action, I can’t wait to see what he can achieve at the club in 2019.” The team would not have made it as far as it did in 2019 without the fantastic support of naming rights sponsor Akarana Timbers and support sponsors Howick Liquorland, PIC Insurance Brokers and Access Solutions. Focus now turns to the 15s game with pre-season training taking place Monday and Wednesday nights for the boys and Tuesday nights for the girls both at 6.30pm. All past, present and new players welcome.
