Investigation into cut throats goes on A

n investigation continues into how two boys had their throats cut during a performance at Saint Kentigern College last week. The college cancelled the remaining scheduled musical performances of Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street last week after two students’ throats were cut. The announcement followed an incident on opening night in which two teens’ were injured live on stage on Wednesday night.

Head of College, Steve Cole, said the college reluctantly decided to cancel its annual school production. “We are disappointed having to do this but have decided that the play should not proceed while investigation into what happened continues.” The final show was to have been on Saturday. Mr Cole said last week after the boys, both 16, were whose necks were cut with a prop razor were doing well. The school has not

responded to queries regarding an update. He said last week the “unfortunate” incident happened halfway through the performance’s second act. The prop was a razor which had been blunted and wrapped in several protective layers, Mr Cole said. “It’s normal for Sweeney Todd to have such an instrument [and it] clearly had been checked many, many times. “It has been bound and cello-

Every year Farmers department store in Botany organises a fundraising event to help Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) continue their important research. Shave for a Cure is Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s signature fundraising event for Kiwis diagnosed with a blood cancer or related conditions every day. Over the past 12 years, thousands of Kiwis have registered, fundraised, had close shaves and shorn their locks off for LBC. Farmers’ stores, customers, friends and families raised $179,927 for LBC in 2015. This year they want to raise more. The Farmers store at the Botany Town Centre organised a community shave event last week and invited the outspoken television host and model Colin Mathura-Jeffree to host it. Hairdressers from Rodney Wayne Botany were kept busy with their razors. Jonathan Davies, employee of Farmers Botany for 20 years, shaved his hair off for the sixth year in a row cheered on by store manager Wade Martin, organiser of the event Deval Shahane and events executive of LBC Aoife Healy.

The scene had been performed “many times” since January including eight dress rehearsals where the prop was used, Mr Cole said. The stage performance accident – said to have occurred at around 9pm – ended with two boys receiving cuts to the neck.

ow does a young, local artist get commissioned to do a series of artworks for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. For Jeremy Kyle, a 23-year-old commercial artist and graphic designer, it began with saying yes to opportunities. Working from his home studio at Eastern Beach, he is working on global campaigns with powerhouse brands like Under Armour, Dior, 2pac Brand and Chicago Bulls – former team of basketball icon Michael Jordan. The graphic designer, who has a following of 45,000 on Facebook, Instagram and Behance – a network of sites to showcase and discover creative work - says it all happened by chance. “I was at a church meeting where we were told they needed a place to put up some people,” he says. “When I offered him a place to crash, I had no idea that Emmanuel Hay was a band member of the Esther Melody Band group.” Emmanuel asked if he could design a feature album for the band.

Under Armour, American sports clothing and accessories company is another brand that approached him to tell their story in 20-25 artworks. “They wanted me to communicate where they started and where they are now, competing with Nike.” When Jeremy is not working on commercial projects, he is busy with Kiwiana art, painting native birds in lucid water colours that appeals to the New Zealanders as well as the tourism market. Kids hear reality of war By Marianne Kelly

S

tudents from 10 local schools got a first-hand account of the realities of war when they took up a Howick Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) invitation to an Anzac awareness day. Accompanying one group was Somerville Intermediate principal David Ellery who said it was good to hear personal accounts. “It brings it home to the kids and is a neat opportunity for them,” he said. “The kids have a great interest and recognise the connection of the RSA with the community. They are interested to know about what happened in the past and this day brings it to life.” Pulling no punches was Barry Dreyer, Colonel Commandant of the New Zealand Royal Regiment of Artillery

anzac spirit: Howick’s senior veteran, Eric Wilson, who saw service in Crete, Greece, North Africa and Italy during World War II, was a special guest at the function arranged for students, teachers and parents from local schools. Times photo Wayne Martin

who said World War I was “cruel and bloody”. “We don’t go to Anzac services to glorify war,” he said. “War is an awful thing. People get killed and wounded easily. Generally they die, unlike in the movies. “Men and women made

great sacrifices because they believed in the values embodied in the Anzac spirit were worth fighting for. “Anzac Day also reminds us that our enemies are not enemies forever. Japan, Turkey, Germany and Italy are all friends now. So things do

change.” Howick RSA patron, Adele White said it was heart warming to see the numbers of young people attending ANZAC services. “But the number of war veterans are slowly diminishing. People ask ‘could this change Anzac Day?’ “I don’t believe it will,” she said. “We’ll still gather to honour those who served in the past and to honour those who are serving now, as we speak, working to restore peace and provide aid to troubled countries.” Schools participating in the awareness day were Mellons Bay, Bucklands Beach, Howick, Baverstock Oaks and Riverhills Primary Schools; Howick, Somerville, and Farm Cove Intermediate Schools; Mission Heights Junior and Botany Downs Senior Colleges.

Adopt a white cross for those who fell By Marianne Kelly This Saturday 290 white crosses will appear on Stockade Hill, Howick. It’s the second year running the Howick Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) is inviting members of the public to place personal memorabilia or information

on family members who have participated in past conflicts on a cross. Among the crosses, 30 will carry information about those who gave their lives in war listed on the cenotaph. RSA immediate past president, Mike Cole, says people are free to attach family details to a cross

but use of marker pens is disallowed. In 2014 the RSA installed a field of crosses just below the cenotaph for Anzac Day. Last year, because the day marked the 100th commemoration of Gallipoli, they invited members of the public to adopt a cross. Many took up the opportunity.

The crosses are seen by the RSA as an opportunity for Howick citizens to make their personal contribution. It asks that the displays are tasteful in remembrance of Anzac and other wars New Zealand has participated in. ■■ Howick RSA will place the white crosses on Stockade Hill at 9.30am this Saturday, April 16.

College digs deep for Fiji Howick College has decided the best way they could help its Pasifika neighbours after Cyclone Winston Fiji recently was to raise awareness and funds at the school. Working with ShelterBox volunteer Sally Fletcher and supported by the school, the group of around 30-40 students arranged a Fiji fundraiser last week. Leaders Tuli Fungavaka and Hope George said, “Our group and the school, has students from Fiji and we wanted to do something to show our support. We tossed a few ideas around and came up with the fundraising initiative.” Students set up the ShelterBox tent on the field and donations were collected around the school throughout the day. Along with a sausage sizzle at lunchtime, entertainment was provided by the school’s Siva Afi group. Having the ShelterBox tent on display enabled students to see just how their contributions will help those left without shelter. A ShelterBox provides a family size tent and the necessities to help families cope with the aftermath of disaster, including water purification, a tool kit, blankets, ground sheets, cooking and eating utensils a stove, a mosquito net and even a child’s activity pack. Ms Fletcher has been deployed on several ShelterBox missions. “I have seen first-hand how a ShelterBox truly changes a family’s life,” she said. “Not only does it provide emergency shelter and vital supplies; it gives people dignity and hope, enabling them to carry on in some of the most harrowing of circumstances.” Donations for ShelterBox New Zealand welcome. Man charged over motorcyclist’s death A

man has been charged in relation to the death of Josh Martin, the Year 13 Pakuranga College student killed on his motorbike in a crash last year. Police have confirmed a 45-year-old man has been charged with careless driving causing death relating to the crash near the school on October 15. Josh, who also used the surname O’Hanlon, was just two months shy of his 18th birthday when he died. The Times reported on October 16 that the crash was between an SUV and Josh’s motorcycle on Pakuranga Road opposite the netball courts in Lloyd Elsmore Park and almost directly in front of the McDonald’s car park entrance. The occupants of the SUV were

uninjured. Photos and tributes portrayed a talented, go-getting youth who loved sports, the sea and the outdoors, had a sense of humour and was well-respected by his peers. Josh, 17, was a Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts member and cub leader as well as a founding member and captain of the Tamaki Lightning American Football Club. He played the tuba in the Pakuranga Concert Band, members of which were present at his funeral service to perform Amazing Grace. The service was led by Josh’s scout leader Keith Nisbet who aimed to capture some of the “diversity” of Josh’s multi-faceted life. “Josh grabbed hold of life for

what it was worth and he would want us to do the same,” Mr Nisbet said. Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams said at the time: “Mistakes happen. One of the dangers is that people look for someone to blame and blame doesn’t help. “There are so many different versions of the eye-witness accounts. It could be fate, an accident. “What we need to do is acknowledge it and ensure it doesn’t happen again. There is no point in second-guessing the tragic circumstances which causes a lot of angst. Let the authorities do their job.” Meanwhile the accused is scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court on May 12.

Investigation at college continues ➤➤From page 1

Media reported one of the boys was seriously injured and the other moderately injured and were taken to Auckland City Hospital. Mr Cole said in a media statement earlier: “We are very concerned about the accident at our school play last night and we are investigating the causes of this. “We are pleased that both boys are in a stable condition and have been talking with

both their families. “Our priority is to support the boys and their families, along with the rest of the cast and crew. Plays and performance are a big part of all school life. We are distressed about what happened last night and are conducting a thorough investigation.” The iTicket site described the college’s show: “Take one wrongfully jailed barber hungry for revenge and mix slowly with a diabolically

entrepreneurial meat-pie vendor. Add a morally void judge, two young lovers and a crazy beggar woman with a secret. Marinate with the exceptional musical sophistication of Stephen Sondheim, then bake at a high emotional temperature and wait for the crust to burn… This mix of horror, opera, comedy and British musical hall is one of the greatest contributions to the musical theatre genre.”

‘I feel for their family’ Clare White feels for the family of the man who has been charged following the death of her son Joshua Martin. Police have charged a 45-year-old man with careless driving causing death relating to a crash near the school on October 15. The crash claimed Josh’s life. The Year 13 Pakuranga College student was on his motorbike heading to KFC to collect his pay cheque at the time of the accident. Josh’s death shocked not only his parents, but the school and wider community too. The outpouring of grief was enormous. Josh’s mum Clare has been struggling to cope with the loss. She says the people she works with have been very helpful. “I work with the elderly and mental health patients and they’ve been very understanding and supportive,” she says. She heard a couple of weeks ago that the man whose car allegedly knocked down Josh had been charged. The court hearing is scheduled for May 12. “We’ve all gone through that moment when we have said ‘oh gosh! It’s so sad that people are always in a hurry to get to places, (running traffic) lights’. “It must be awful for him. I feel for his family. His son went to the same school as Josh. It’s a terrible thing to happen to anyone. “I did send him a message through the police but he

hasn’t approached us as yet. “I think Joshua was at the wrong place at the wrong time. “The police said it was the man’s fault.” Clea said there were around half a dozen students from Josh’s school who don’t know how to deal with the sudden loss. “Since Josh was cremated, there is no place they can go to pay their respects. Some of them have come home and I have shown them the ashes in the urn,” she said. “It’s so difficult to believe that such a vibrant life is no more.” Reminiscing about the time Josh messaged her to ask her about her date of birth she says: “I still have his message on my phone and love reading it. “He had asked me for my date of birth and his grandma’s, saying he wanted to tattoo it on his shoulders. He said ‘all these years you’ve carried me on your shoulders and now I’d like to carry you’,” she says emotionally. In an attempt to get some closure, Josh’s mum attended a psychic show hosted by Kelvin Cruickshank of ‘Sensing Murder’ fame. “Being a Christian, I didn’t really believe in it,” she admits, “but when Kelvin told me that your son is here in his red Nike shoes, and those were his favourite shoes he was cremated in, I knew he was there. “He also said tell mum I never got those tattoos done.”

Students head to Le Quesnoy By Farida Master

T

BONJOUR FRANCE: Next week Edgewater College students along with Jessica Mowat, HOD French (left, second row) and Moira Macpherson, deputy principal (right) will be visiting places in France that are of historical Photo supplied significance to New Zealand.

he town of Le Quesnoy in France has never forgotten the role New Zealand has played in its history. Streets like ‘Rue des All Blacks’, and ‘Rue Helen Clark’ immortalise not just our men in black but this country’s first elected female Prime Minister. Students of Edgewater College will be soon walking down those streets. They will visit Le Quesnoy on Anzac Day, a town liberated by Kiwi soldiers. Departing on April 14, around 10 students aged 14-17, along with two teachers and a parent, will be travelling to France for 20 days. Students of Years 10-13 are hoping to attend a special ceremony held at a local primary school that

even has a large mural installed with a Maori symbols and design. Jessica Mowat, head of department, French, who has been working on this project for 16 months. “I was awarded a Ministry of Education Language Immersion Award and spent 10 months in the north of France helping in English classes at a local high school and doing a bit of French study.” Based on the relationships built during her time there, she has arranged the trip, with a major focus on places of significance to New Zealand. “The students will be spending a week with host families and attending the Notre Dame de Grace School in Maubeuge,” she says. They will also visit Normandy to see Arromanches, one of the

D-Day landing beaches – where they built the artificial harbour Bayeux and Mont Saint Michel. For the uninitiated, Codenamed Operation Overlord, also known as D-Day during World War II, saw around 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. “The trip of a lifetime includes a visit to the town of Arras which has an extensive network of underground tunnels created by the New Zealand tunnelling company for a strategic attack during the war,” she says. “A tour at the Carrière de Wellington where the walls are marked with names such as Blenheim and Wellington will be equally fascinating for the students,” she says.

Iconic songs will strike a chord Iconic songs each with their own special place in New Zealand history and our hearts will be performed in a concert coming to Howick. Operatunity is making a whirlwind tour through great New Zealand music that so many Kiwis have laughed, danced, cried and sung along to over the years. Legendary entertainer from the Chicks, Suzanne Lynch, The Three Kiwi Blokes, Karl Perigo, Robert Enari and Alex Milligan, and a live band will pay tribute to some of New Zealand’s most treasured entertainers, including Sir Howard Morrison, Ray Columbus, the Topp Twins, Maria Dallas, John Rowles, Billy T. James, Fred Dagg, and Peter Posa. eatured is Blue Smoke, the first wholly-produced New Zealand record in 1949, about one of New Zealand’s defining experience as a nation, World War II. The programme canvasses the 60s with the craze for the new British sound of the Beatles and Cliff Richard while soon Ray Columbus and the Invaders had teenagers screaming and dancing with She’s a Mod. New Zealand music flourished in the 60s and 70s with hits like Welcome to my World, Cheryl Moana Marie and Just a Closer Walk with Thee. The Operatunity concert is at 11am on April 26 at the Picton Centre, 120 Picton Street, Howick. It includes a light lunch where there will be an opportunity to chat with the artists. Mayoral candidate outlines aspirations Labour MP Phil Goff talks about his push for Mayor Transport

By Marianne Kelly

M

ount Roskill MP Phil Goff intends to take a strong stand with central government if Aucklanders vote him in as Mayor of the SuperCity. “The political strength of the Mayor is to speak on behalf of the city to central government because it holds the purse strings,” he told a capacity crowd in Howick at a meeting organised by Botany MP JamiLee Ross. Mr Ross will be inviting the leading centre-right mayoral candidate to a future meeting. Mr Goff said he wants to counter the advice the Government gets from the Wellington bureaucrats and take an environment-based approach. “I will be working on what the evidence points to, not an idealistic approach. It will be about putting a case up that is irresistible to central government,” he says. “But when we argue a case for limited resources we will be asked what savings we can make from elsewhere. “We need to be able to say we are the best performing council; that we have done

away with waste and duplication. But I don’t think we have. Eight councils have come together but I do not see enough evidence yet that the city is running efficiently. “I will not be saying that the rates will go up another 10 per cent. The first thing to do is get the act together and take hard decisions. It’s about doing more with less.”

Rates alone cannot pay for infrastructure, he says. “I don’t mind about the private sector being involved and there will have to be a significant element of user-pays involved. “I don’t want to be elected on promises I can’t deliver.” A light rail system, he says, will have to be brought forward, for example, how Te Irirangi Drive is used. “It’s what every other modern city has put in place.” And opening more cycle ways linking schools for children to use is “not a silly green idea”, he says. “Our kids are the third most obese in the world and a lot of them could do with a bit of cycling.” A regional petrol tax has been rejected but, Mr Goff says, the Government may be changing its mind. While he supports a motorway charge, he also advocates using GPS systems which charge for the amount of time spent on the road in comparison with the Northern Gateway Toll Road where 70 per cent of revenue is spent on administering the toll.

lias Worrall-Bader has always had an ambition to study the Antarctica environment and his chances have just got much higher with selection to the 2016 Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders’ Forum this month, The Year 12 Howick College student will join student leaders from throughout the country at the forum in Nelson on April 16-22. It will concentrate on pest eradication, biodiversity and ocean health. Elias says he grew up with a strong interest in animals and zoology which evolved into the environment and conservation. The 16-year-old was a founding member of the Howick College environmental committee which last year trawled through the rubbish that left the school each day and set a target of reducing it by 60 per cent. It applied for a grant and received two $2000 bins along with others that have been circulated to every classroom in the school, one for paper, one for general rubbish and another for recycling. Already the amount of rubbish going out the gate this year has decreased, Elias says.

“We’re looking at composting now.” Living close to the water in Cockle Bay, he says, helped foster his love of water and marine life. He became aware of the Peter Blake Forum when he was selected for the Auckland Council Make a Difference (MAD) youth leadership programme two years in a row. Last year he was a leader of one of the groups on a course at Piha where he learned about environmental sustainability and developed his leadership skills. In his application for the

Nelson Forum he wrote about his experience on the MAD programme and the Howick College sustainability committee, his outdoor experience gleaned from being a Venturer with Cockle Bay Scouts, and being a student trustee on the Howick College Board of Trustees. “I like to keep busy,” Elias says, stringing off his sporting interests including football, hockey, tennis, water polo. He’s also an accomplished debater. lias is one of 50 selected from 300 applicants for the Nelson forum which he describes as “a prestigious opportunity”. “We are going to meet scientists at the Cawthron Institute,” an organisation that specialises in aquaculture, marine biosecurity, coastal and estuarine ecology, freshwater ecology and analytical laboratory services. The students will snorkel in one of Nelson’s marine reserves and will create a presentation to Dr Nick Smith, the Minister for the Environment. “The exciting thing,” Elias says, “is that this opens up the opportunity to go on a Peter Blake expedition. I have always wanted to travel to Antarctica and this will be a good chance to apply for that.”

ifty-five years ago, a small independent tyre shop opened on the Ellerslie Panmure Highway.

Devoted owner-operators Shirley and the late Tom Haslip specialised in repairs along with tube repairs for punctures as well as supplying new Dunlop, Goodyear and Firestone tyres. Five years later, Bruce Haslip joined his parents’ business in 1966. Retread moulds were purchased and a service for retreading old tyres began. While the landscape of the Panmure area changed over the years with the Mt Wellington Borough Council widening the Ellerslie Panmure Highway and the opening of the fourth bridge across the Tamaki River in 1974 taking cars directly across to the eastern area of Pakuranga— the oldest tyre shop stood proud in its deep commitment to family values as they continued providing the best

possible service. In 1976 Bruce’s wife Thema joined her mother-inlaw Shirley in the office. It was around the time when industry was thriving in the area. Now businesses like Dulux Paints, Masport, Henry Berry Mt Wellington licensing trust hotel, W F Tucker (now McDonalds) have all but moved on.

The year of 1986 saw extensive cleanup work at the old Dulux site bringing with it a new road, Forge Way along with traffic lights. This was the turning corner for Haslips Tyre Services. In 2000, the third generation family owned business that has been operating from the same site on the Ellerslie Panmure Highway since

it opened in 1961, flourished with an extensive new entrance and a sunny lounge area. The oldest independent tyre shop in Auckland is now run by brothers Gavin and Craig Haslip who are not only continuing their grandparents’ legacy but growing it. The 54ha site on the corner of Harris and Smales Roads in East Tamaki was used as a landfill by Envirowaste Services Limited (ESL) up until 2005 and since 2006 has been undergoing managed fill operations to restore its original landform. Local Board Chair David Collings says the board is welcoming feedback on initial plans which will guide a substantial and exciting new green space for local businesses and residents. “We’ve made a significant push for progress on this transformation and it’s great to see this long-held vision coming to life in these plans. We now have a masterplan including a fantastic mix of open natural spaces and ponds with built play, fitness and recreation facilities,” says Mr Collings. “Of course the design of the site needs to suit unique constraints given its previous use as a landfill. Neck problems – Do you have it?

T

oday’s mod modern living often entails hours of driving and hunching over workstations, which can play havoc with our necks. So it is not surprising that neck pain is the second most common condition that chiropractors work with. Whilst neck pain is less common than low back pain, millions of people experience neck pain and related arm pain at some stage in their lives and therefore seek chiropractic care. It results from abnormalities in the soft tissues – muscles, ligaments, and nerves, as well as in the bone and the joints of the spine. The most common causes that chiropractors identify and treat are soft tissue abnormalities from injury or prolonged wear and tear and in many people it is also the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders and arms. When neck pain is caused by muscle strain, you may have aches and stiffness that spread to the upper arm and forearm. Shooting pain that spreads down the arm into the hand and fingers can be a symptom of a “pinched nerve” or nerve entrapment in the neck. When

a nerve is “pinched” in the neck, numbness, weakness and possibly pain of the hands or arms may occur. Other common reasons people will consult with a chiropractor include whiplash, RSI (repetitive strain injuries) or overuse, degeneration and wear and tear, and postural problems, also headaches and migraines.

How Does the Body Work? In your house, you have a circuit breaker box. In that box you have individual circuits that control specific rooms in your house. If you were to blow the circuit that leads to the kitchen, nothing in your kitchen would work. Without a proper supply of electricity, nothing in your kitchen would work. The only solution is to go to the circuit breaker box and physically turn the power on by turning the circuit on. In your body, you have a circuit breaker box known as your spinal cord. It has a series of 24 circuits known as vertebrae (spinal bones). Each vertebra sends a wire called a nerve with information and nerve impulses to all parts of your body including all of your muscles, organs and glands.

Much like a circuit breaker box after a thunder storm, if your body suffers a physical stress – like a car accident, fall or even poor posture, that stress can cause one of these circuits to blow. Headaches, migraine headaches and neck and shoulder pain are all BLARING ALARMS telling you that you have blown a circuit. Chiropractic helps the body to help itself!

Broadcasting plan gives way to law W

ith 43 years of practising law under his belt it’s a surprise to find that, had the choice been his alone, Kelly Flavell would now be a veteran broadcaster. “I always liked the idea of broadcasting,” he says. “If I had a choice I would have done it. But Mum wanted me to be a lawyer and at the time the only place to get into broadcasting was Wellington. But moving there would have broken her heart.” Instead he now presides over a thriving law business in Howick Village, a place he has a long association with. It goes back to 1967 when Howick lawyer Geoff Dawson encouraged Kelly’s accountant Dad, Len to come to Howick. Both families had forged strong ties when the two Dads were providing their services to the small Taranaki West Coast town of Opunake. On graduating from Auckland University, Kelly returned to Howick to work for the Dawson & Devereaux law firm. He moved on to Papatoetoe to work for Augusta Wallace, the first woman in New Zealand to be appointed as a judge in the District Court. After she was called to the bench Kelly took over her practice. “I loved working for her. She was great fun to be around,” he says. After the Flavell and Wallace partnership was dissolved, in 1983 Kelly went on his own establishing a practice in Papatoetoe and eventually add-

ing small offices in Remuera, Auckland Central, New Lynn and Takapuna. But the days of small offices were numbered as the economy faltered and, in 1995, Kelly returned to his roots in Howick. “I had always loved Howick,” he says. “It’s a neat place to practise law. People are demanding but are also prepared to pay for good service. “It’s a great community and great to be seeing children of people you have looked after for years.” His hankering for broadcasting was fuelled when he was asked to represent the Law Society on a Radio Pacific programme to provide answers to listeners’ legal questions.

“People wondered whether the demographics of the audience were right. But I got considerable business from grandmothers referring their children to me.” In the beginning, however, lawyers were not allowed to advertise their practices so Kelly had to change his name on air to Geoff Kelly. At the end of the restrictions in the early 80s he was able to broadcast as Kelly Flavell. At this time Kelly was still running his five small offices so he embarked on an advertising and marketing programme and, in the process, pioneered television advertising for lawyers. When he returned to Howick halfway through 1995 he ran an advertising campaign with front-page ads in the Howick and Pakuranga Times. A hiatus developed in the first three months of 1996 until phone calls started with people asking whether he was still in business because his ads were no longer appearing. “I have consistently advertised since then because you need the awareness and exposure,” he says. “I was the first lawyer in Howick to advertise in the local newspaper. “It still works today. It is noticeable that when you put an ad in there is a response and they walk in the door. “I have limited my advertising to Howick and Pakuranga Times and [sister publication] EastLife. Everyone is good to me and I’m looked after.”

It’s aimed at raising awareness of the importance of having conversations with family, loved ones or GPs.

An advance care planning conversation is a documented conversation between a healthcare professional and a patient and/or their whanau about planning for future health care. It could involve introducing the idea, initiating and/ or participating in conversations that give patients the opportunity to develop and express their

LAUNCH THE FUN CRAFT

Enjoy super charged fun at the Plaza these holidays - from crafts to face painting there’s something for everyone.

I live in Farm Cove and don’t like to catch the 565 bus anymore. They almost don’t have a timetable anymore, they just come whenever they like. I’m very good at making sure I get to the bus stop on time, check what day it is and stand on the correct side of the road. I’ve watched carefully to see if they come, but that same route is so unreliable. I know the plastic timetables on certain bus stop signs are very outdated, so why are they still there? That would be very confusing to some people who aren’t used to using buses. I rely a lot on the buses, as I can’t drive a car. I stopped using that route late last year after having to once wait 30 and once even 45 minutes for a bus. AP Pakuranga

Outstanding Owairoa!

Re Owairoa goes for black out (Times, April 7), it was fabulous to hear your kaitiaki students explain your powerless black out day. It sounds like a highly effective reminder to the whole school how dependent we all are on the invisible energy, electricity, and also how much we take it for granted. I look forward to seeing the results of your “flick the switch campaign”. Finally, may I acknowledge your grid spy monitors and their mentors who are finding ways to help your school to change their behaviour and to become a more low-carbon school. Cate Jessep

Sugar tax?

Sugar tax on drinks, in theory a great idea, and it could reap millions for the Government. But how much difference would it make to consumption? A supermarket advertises today 24 cans of drink for $16.99, yes 71 cents a can. Add 100 per cent tax now $1.42. Would that really stop someone buying their daily fix? If the Government does add a tax, it might be around 20 per cent, and our can of drink is now 82 cents. Big deal. I can see drinkers swapping to bottled water. But wait, that is even more expensive. Supermarkets will react to this tax possibly affecting their sales of sugary drinks and promote them more. There has got to be a better way because this surely is not going to make the slightest difference. Bob Wichman, Botany

Traffic lights at fault?

Re ‘Man charged over motorcyclist’s death’ (Times online, April 8). I may stand corrected but the type of traffic lights, and the phasing of the same, at this intersection may have contributed to this accident. I’ve been near-missed twice on a motorcycle at this intersection by cars turning across my lawful path. Possibly just an example of not being seen... but also possibly due an inherent systemic fault with the traffic light set up. Terry Leach

Celebrating our cultures

Sports bites

By Rumer-Grace Archer

Macleans College is kicking off the winter sports season with a pre-season winter tournament this weekend. Approximately 600 students from nine different schools including Pakuranga College, Howick College and Botany Downs College, will compete in range of different sports. Sports teams will include girls and boys premier football, girls and boys premier basketball, First XV rugby, Premier 1, 2, 10A and 9A netball, and girls and boys premier hockey. The tournament is sponsored by John Russell Menswear in Howick, a provider of uniforms to local schools.

E

dgewater College students have celebrated their multiculturalism in a vibrant cultural festival. The showcase illustrated the cultural diversity in the school through student-driven performances involving dance, music and costumes. Cultural coordinator Tu Edwards says the inaugural cultural festival is a way to enhance student involvement and develop their skills in all areas. “We use every occasion like this for student development, so our media studies students and technical guys learn about staging events,” he says. The cultural evening is one of the highlights of the year for the students who, Mr Edwards says, are eager to display their pride for their cultures and the diversity in the school. “It’s a big one for the students, they get to not only display their heritage but actually teach their mates. “ It’s one thing to display it to everyone in the school and be proud of that but when you’re teaching your mates and your mates genuinely want to learn about what your heritage is, that’s another depth that is a real feel-good factor for all kids involved,” Mr Edwards says. perform in front of over 700 parents, siblings, teachers, ex-students and community neighbours. The school’s renowned kapa haka group, fresh from the ASB Polyfest, headlined the evening followed by performances from the talented Tongan and Samoan groups who also competed at Polyfest. The night also had performances from a Korean K-pop group, Filipino group, and Japanese group. This year’s event welcomed the new African group named “African Continent.” The inaugural event has been running at Edgewater for over ten years and was established by students who wanted their own cultural event for the school.

“Primarily it was driven by the Polynesian groups but as it evolved over the last five or six years all the other little nationalities took up strength and decided they wanted to do their thing too,” Mr Edwards says. Ultimately the cultural evening benefits the students who are involved and the school, with money raised from the event going back to the school to support programmes like the Whanau programme. Students are also given the chance to earn money for their labour at the event which goes towards paying off their sports and school fees. “If you’re striving and designing events like this around that then they have longevity about them,” Mr Edwards says.

Choir needs funding for costumes The City of Auckland Singers, busy preparing for their upcoming trip to Wales for the 70th Llangollen Eisteddfod, are seeking sponsorship to pay for their national costumes. The choir, representing New Zealand, is looking for financial assistance to make the costumes, musical director and Bucklands Beach Intermediate teacher Sue Murray said. “This will be an amazing

experience, mixing with choirs from all over the world. During the international parade, all the choirs march through the streets of Llangollen wearing their national costumes,” she said. “Choirs are also requested to wear their national costumes when performing at the Eisteddfod grounds. “In order to look our best and shine for our country,

we are hoping to find a sponsor or sponsors who will fund the cost of making the costumes.” The group has selected a stylish red tunic design with a silver fern embossed on it to be worn with black pants for the ladies. If you are able to help with sponsorship, or know of a company that would be interested in doing this, please contact Sue Murray on 576-3389.

Junior Warriors debut Howick Hornets junior Chanel Harris-Tavita was given a 17th birthday present he will never forget. On Sunday, April 3, Chanel was called in to debut for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in their fifth-round NYC clash against the Sydney Roosters at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford. With players needing to be 17 to play in the competition, Chanel was picked at perfect timing on his 17th birthday. Vodafone Junior Warriors coach Kelvin Wright decided earlier in the week that the Howick Hornets junior would make his first appearance on his birthday. The Pakuranga College student has represented the New Zealand Residents 16s as well as the Akarana Falcons and under 15 and under 18 level.

BRASS ENSEMBLE: Music students came together last year to play concerts devoted to brass instruments, and will repeat them this year. Photo supplied

It’s time to blow your own trumpet A

n opportunity for brass instrumental musicians to move from the back of the stage to the front is coming up with concerts organised solely for classically trained brass players. Howick’s Brendan Agnew and Nicolas Allen, of Mt Albert, both Bachelor of Music Trumpet Performance students, have formed the ensemble. It involves 25 brass players aged 12-25 from around the country and will have its opening rehearsal on April 17. The ensemble, in its second year, was formed because the two students saw a lack of opportunity for young classically trained brass players to play together. They say it is a chance for players to meet new

people, play new music and discover new musicianship techniques. It’s unique in that it features only trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. Brendon and Nicolas say the ensemble fills a niche in the New Zealand brass community. It’s dedicated to furthering excellence from a youth perspective, supporting and educating the players involved. It’s also endorsed by musicians in amateur, student and professional brass circles. Two inaugural concerts will be held in Howick and Mt Albert. The programme includes Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue

in C minor, Pantomime by Philip Spark with euphonium soloist Linda Filimoehala. The musical scores are all arranged for brass ensemble. Players from Whangarei to Christchurch will be based in Mt Albert for rehearsals and will be tutored by members of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestera and ACE Brass Trio. They will be conducted by the music director of Howick Brass Band, Luke Christiansen. ■■ Brass ensemble concerts will be at 7pm on April 21 at Mt Albert Methodist Church; and at 7.30pm on April 22 at the Picton Centre, Howick. Not your average men’s shed A shortage of apprentices in the construction industry is being promoted at a shopping mall By Marianne Kelly

C

ody Webby is a man on a mission. Not only does the newly-qualified builder have to supervise the construction of a classy residential entertainment pod in three weeks, but he has set himself the goal of running his own construction business within the next five or so years. The Pakuranga builder won the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year award for Auckland in 2014 and two months ago completed his apprenticeship with Auckland company Licensed Renovations. Currently he’s leading a threeweek campaign for the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO). It has assembled a team of eight apprentices building an up-market shed in the car park at Sylvia Park shopping mall. The shed will be auctioned on April 21 with funds raised going to Habitat for Humanity. The event is part of addressing a drastic shortage of apprentices in the construction industry. While BCITO currently has about 6000 people training in carpentry, the industry needs at least 3000 more to meet the building demand, particularly in Auckland. The shed is not your average model, says Andrew Robertson, BCITO marketing and communications manager.

ON THE JOB: Young builders, from left, Karla Tonga, Cody Webby and Mark Sivita on the Sylvia Park shed site. Times photo Wayne Martin

It’s designed to be a space for entertainment, featuring cedar finishes, skylights, large glass doors and other high spec materials. The fit-out will include a television, sound system, barbecue, bar and a glass-fronted fridge. “We wanted to build something that showcased the finer side of the trades,” he says, “something with a wow factor.” Cody comes from a family of trades people, including a

builder, marine technician and an industrial instrumentation technician. “Getting into a trade was always in my mind, it was just a matter of what trade,” he says. Rather than starting an immediate apprenticeship, Cody decided to start from the ground up and tackle the hard yakka job of labouring. “Then you know when you are ready to start an apprenticeship.

You get a good understanding of the trade and are not ‘green as’ when you start study.” While still an apprentice Cody was given the opportunity to site manage a job. “I was lucky to have the boss [Russell Clark] put his faith in me. He oversaw my work and the quantity surveyor helped me with the finance, making sure I was not running over budget. “The senior supervisor helped me envisage things from the base up. That’s a big part of the job, visualising the final product. I was lucky to have the guidance and to be chucked in at the deep end.” Asked what he would say to a mate who was enquiring about the building trade he says he would tell them to do their research. “Go to BCITO.TV and see what it’s like and listen to personal opinions. “Anyone leaving school should get a driver’s licence, knuckle down and save for a car. You have to go where the work is and you can’t take your tools on a bus. “It is hard work but don’t give up. You will be given ‘dirty’ jobs but have perseverance and go through it. At the end it will be so rewarding. “This is a high-paid industry. Because the demand is so high you will be paid well.” The shed project, he says, is

“testing my management skills to the max”. “It’s about showing apprentices what can be done. In the next five or so years I will definitely be doing my own thing. I will go as far as I can and then run my own business.”

Carpentry competition

Carpentry apprentices are being called to show off their talent and passion for the trades by competing in the Registered Master Builders Carters 2016 Apprentice of the Year. Apprentices can be in to win a share of more than $100,000 in prizes as well as the title of 2016 Apprentice of the Year. Carpentry apprentices can enter the competition online at www.apprenticeoftheyear.co.nz. Entries close on June 9.

House of the year

Judges have started their journey up and down the country seeking New Zealand’s finest homes in this year’s Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year competition. More than 320 homes will be assessed as the judges travel around New Zealand before regional event winners are announced in July and August. The Auckland/Northland regional event is on August 6 at the Motat Aviation Museum, Western Springs.

Deal to overflow clobber T

he routine of de-junking closets and scrubbing cupboards can seem as though the job is never done if storage space is poorly organized and the cupboards are always overflowing. If you’re setting your mind to get rid of the mess, here are a few helpful tips. Try not to let feelings get in the way. Remember that the goal is to make closets, cupboards and drawers visually appealing when open and much easier to access. Start by placing everything that needs sorting out in the middle of the floor of a room that doesn’t get much use. Ask yourself the

Where there are two or more identical items, keep the one in the best condition. If an object was stored in the wrong place, put it in the right place.

following questions about each item: ■■ Is it in good condition? ■■ Do I have other, identical objects? ■■ Was it stored in the right place? ■■ Is it useful to me? ■■ Does it have sentimental value? If an object is broken and can’t be repaired, throw it out immediately. Put it in the garbage or take it to a recycling centre. An object that is no longer useful or never used should be given to someone who needs it more than you.

Sentimental value

Are you brought to tears at the thought of getting rid of a trinket that reminds you of your grandmother? Then ask yourself why you keep it hidden away in a closet. If you can’t bring yourself to get rid of it, give it pride of place in your home instead. On the other hand, if hundreds of youthful love letters are clut-

tering up half the closet, they can be scanned and stored on a CD so they take up less space.

One out of two

It can be difficult to get rid of items that you think are still useful or ones that bring back good memories. However, you can make it easier on yourself by using the “one out of two” trick. With this approach, you keep one out of any two items you’re hesitating over, whether they’re items of clothing, books, photographs, toys or decorations. That way, you only keep those that really matter to you.

Home ownership dream alive and well Despite mounting challenges, young Super City dwellers still have their hearts set on home ownership and many are actively working towards their dream. Real estate agency Barfoot & Thompson asked Auckland’s “next first home buyers” – more than 500 aged 18-34 who are yet to own a property – about their future living plans, with the findings confirming the enduring strength of the ‘Kiwi dream’. The company’s managing director Peter Thompson says a lot of speculation is circulating about what first home buyers will be looking for in the future and how they want to live compared with the

generations before them. An overwhelming 91 per cent of those surveyed said they wanted to own their own home one day, citing benefits such as stability, financial security and investment potential. “Many also noted the less tangible sides of home ownership, such as having a place to bring up a family and it being a long-term achievement they could take pride in,” he says. “Others commented on their parents’ hard work and perseverance to own a home and their own desire to emulate that.” However, many respondents are less optimistic about the ability to turn their dream

into a reality, particularly in the Auckland market where feelings were split. While home ownership in New Zealand as a whole is seen as an achievable goal by the majority of those aspiring to own a house (59 per cent), just 38 per cent say it is an achievable goal in Auckland for them and others like them. “Open-ended responses pointed to the significantly higher costs of buying in Auckland and difficulty saving the required deposit alongside other living costs as some of the key reasons behind their doubts,” Mr Thompson says. “What is heartening and inspiring, however, is the number of young Kiwis still

chasing their goals, even in the face of challenges and their own doubts.” The survey found that half (49 per cent) of young Aucklanders who would one day like to own a home were actively working towards their dream. “This is a different view from what some may have predicted of Auckland’s young and aspiring home owners and further supports the view that they haven’t given up on their ‘Kiwi dream’.” Their top five actions include saving for a deposit (77 per cent), reducing spending on luxury items (44 per cent), looking to buy in alternative locations (27 per cent), living at

home with family (27 per cent) and working additional hours, shifts or jobs (24 per cent). “And the steps being taken are sometimes more dramatic than just saving more and working harder,” Mr Thompson says. Among those making plans, the survey showed not only one in five (20 per cent) respondents aged 25 plus were living at home with family to help make their dream a reality, but a similar proportion were delaying having children in order to save money (18 per cent). “This equates to one-inthree of this group who are delaying either or both of those milestones.”

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, April 14, 2016 — 27

Pair Cruden and Sopoaga C

all me crazy but I believe the best way for the All Black selectors to include their best first-five and goal-kicker in this year’s test series against Wales is to pair Aaron Cruden and Lima Sopoaga in the number 10 and 12 jerseys. Both are playing outstandingly well in the No 10 jersey with Cruden back to his best after missing most of 2015 through injury. It was he who paved the way for the Chiefs hard-fought 29-23 win against the gallant Blues in Hamilton last Friday by scoring a try and setting up another for Seta Tamanivalu. A week earlier he set up three tries against the highly-rated Brumbies, one with a perfect

cross kick and two after jinky runs and smart offloads. Last weekend Sopoaga scored a try and was unlucky not to have been awarded another when he led the sluggish Highlanders back from a 22-6 halftime deficit to the Reds in Brisbane where the hosts scraped home 28-27. As backline generals who take smart options, Cruden and Sopoaga are the best in the country, clever ball distributors and tactical kickers. In Grant Fox and Ian Foster, the All Black selection panel is well-served with men who know a thing or two about the special qualities required of a No 10. The one question mark about the incredibly-gifted Cruden is his goal-kicking which,

like Beauden Barrett’s, has never been as good as good as Sopoaga’s or rising 20-year-old star Damian McKenzie’s. Despite McKenzie’s success, Chiefs coach Dave Rennie plans to give him a rest from his goal-kicking duties and give Cruden a crack. Most likely the national selectors will favour promoting Charlie Ngatai as the test No 12 rather than gamble with Sopoaga whose defensive qualities in that position remain unknown. That has merit in that Ngatai has developed a great combination with Cruden for the Chiefs which could also prosper at international level. But with no one emerging of Conrad Smith’s quality at centre, the All Blacks

may be better served with Ngatai filling the void there. The obvious choice if he was replicating his brilliant 2014 form for the Highlanders would have been former Pakuranga star Malakai Fekitoa but his passing and handling has been poor this season. That’s a shame for he is a superb physical specimen who runs and tackles hard, has a ramrod fend and a sharp sidestep and swerve. Unfortunately he tends to snatch at the ball and too often loses contact with his supports. However should he improve in those areas and emulate Smith in setting up his wings for tries, he could yet cement the spot. With Nehe Milner-Skudder and Waisake Naholo out of

Agnew’s Angle action with long-term injuries, the selectors may be tempted to place the world’s best fullback, Ben Smith, on the right wing. If they do, that would open the door for Beauden Barrett or Damian McKenzie to wear the No 15 jersey. Barrett is a proven gamebreaker coming off the bench to fill the fullback role. But McKenzie is almost as fast, more daring and, if required, a better goalkicker. Meanwhile a much improved Blues effort against the Chiefs offers hope for a home win against the Sharks on Saturday night at Eden Park.

Surf lifesaving sister act earns national title By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER The Shrimpton sisters from Botany are a speedy surf life saving duo. Former Sancta Maria College students, 20-yearold Taylor and 19-year-old Robbie blitzed the competition at the BP Surf Rescue New Zealand Championships recently in Papamoa. The pair, representing Sunset Beach Surf Club in Port Waikato, left the competition in their wake, winning three gold medals and one silver to become the New Zealand Women’s Champions. Finishing with a total of 18

points, the Shrimpton sisters were an incredible 13 points ahead of the crew in second place. “They’ve really kicked ass,” their dad Mr Shrimpton says. Despite the messy conditions with swells up to a metre, Taylor and Robbie proved stronger and more resilient than many of their opponents. “It’s quite dangerous. The amount of injuries, if you had seen some of the ones carted off it was really good to see them come through it unscathed,” Mr Shrimpton says. Surf life saving has become a Shrimpton family affair with

22-year-old brother, Hogan, coming away as the open men’s national champion as well. Taylor and Robbie joined the Sunset Beach Surf Club at 14 and have been training on the IRB racing team for four years.“We both started as patients in the team and we moved on and up the ranks and into our driver and crewman positions. So that’s what got us hooked in the first place,” Taylor says. Despite the challenges they faced early on, like not being strong enough to

drag the IRB down to the water, the sisters persisted and trained harder. “When they first started racing you’d be watching and the girls would be out at the buoy coming back and they’re (Taylor and Robbie) still trying to drag the boat into the water. “They’ve gone from really struggling to the ones to beat now. It’s been amazing as a parent watching, seeing the transformation...the change in their abilities is huge,” Mr Shrimpton says.

Success for local schools at Maadi Saint Kentigern College had an impressive medal haul at the 2016 Maadi Cup Regatta last week. The boys’eights won a gold medal in the under 17 boys’ event followed by a silver medal for the fours. The girls’ lightweight fours also added a silver medal to the collection. Winning a bronze medal was an impressive feat for the Howick College girl’s team. The novice coxed fours started rowing in October last year, which captain Saskia Jordan says is well behind other schools who usually start around May or June. Taking away a bronze was the first medal win at Maadi for Howick College and an encouraging achievement for the new rowers. Macleans College boys’ coxed four also won a bronze medal in the under 15 final.

SPECIAL: The Pakuranga United premieres put on a winning show in the pre-season tournament.

akuranga United Premier Rugby team won the 2016 Waka Nathan Challenge Cup on Saturday April 9, defeating Waitemata 27-23. Premier Coach Pita Alatini was impressed with his team’s performance after what turned out to be a battle mid-match. “We started really well and finished really well,” he says. “We made it hard for

ourselves at times through unforced errors, not being accurate and poor decisions but that’s not to take anything away from Waitemata who put a lot of pressure on us and forced us into these situations at times.” Coming away with a preseason win is encouraging for the team as they head into the beginning of the season. “It’s great. We have worked hard over the pre-

The Waka Nathan Challenge Cup, which started in 2008, is a knockout style competition which gives new teams the chance to build strength and gain traction for the upcoming season. “...it is a pre-season tournament and so for those early rounds the boys are still finding their feet especially if you have a new group to work on,” Alatini says.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

season,” Alatini says. “This was shown by the last efforts from the boys to snatch the victory away from Waitemata. “But it’s the first phase in our journey for the year.” The Waka Nathan tournament, Alatini says, is a special competition for Pakuranga United as Waka Nathan has close ties to the club through his daughter and grandkids who are members.
