eople wanting to remember those fallen in war will have an opportunity to commemorate their lives at traditional Dawn and Civic Services but also, for the first time, at the end of Anzac Day this Monday. A small ensemble from Howick Brass, which will provide music for the Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA) Dawn and Civic Services, will perform

a short sunset/retreat ceremony at the end of the day. It will play down the Anzac standards from the Flagstaff on Stockade Hill. The ‘playing down’ of the standards signifies the end of the day’s battle as the sun sets on 100 years of Anzac commemorations since the first Anzac day. All members of the public are welcome to attend the informal event which starts at about 5.35 pm for a 5.42pm sunset. For the second year running

both Howick’s Anzac ceremonies will kick off with a blank round fired from a 105 Howitzer Gun RSA past president, Mike Cole is also optimistic that a P-3 Orion Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) surveillance aircraft may be able to make a dawn fly over at Stockade Hill. As they did last year War Birds vintage aircraft are expected, although not confirmed, to fly past at 11.15-11.30 am during the Civic Service.

As dawn is about to break Returned and Services Association (RSA) members will assemble for the Howick Dawn Parade at 5.40am in Mellons Bay Road. They will march to the cenotaph on Stockade Hill where the service will start just after the 6am minute gun fire. This year the Dawn service will be led by Pastor Maurice Ritchie, of the Citipointe Church, Pakuranga. ➤ Turn to Page 3

Biting dog breeds difficult to identify By MARIANNE KELLY There’s a lot of anecdotal information but a paucity of facts about the specific breed of dogs which are at the centre of high-profile attacks on people, especially children. Anecdotal information suggests that many people treated for dog bites have been attacked by labradors, Alsations, even handbag dogs! Howick’s Diane Andrew says the fact that she has a

‘staffy’ (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) that has killed flies and crickets and never hurt anyone is a reason she would like to see the other side of the story. “I’m sick of people judging my little staffy without even meeting her.” Auckland Council’s Animal Management doesn’t collate figures on breeds it handles after biting incidents, its manager Geoff Keber says. “While all dogs can bite,

pitbull terriors and cross breeds are disproportionately responsible for attacks when you consider the size of this breed’s population,” he says. Dr Sally Langley, president of the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons (NZAPS) says it’s difficult to get statistics on the breeds or crosses of offending dogs. “The breed of dog might not be known,” she says. “There is an element of

Chinese whispers and carried mistakes. A lot of people do not know what type of dog they have to identify as the offending animal. I got hit by a dog recently and I think it was a rottweiler, but cannot be sure. “We do feel that the more major injuries are caused by the more aggressive dogs which tend to be pit bull/ bull mastiff/crosses, possibly rottweilers.”

ast Tamaki resident Noeleen Sutton has been reunited with an important family heirloom just in time for Anzac Day. Noeleen received a letter from Medals Reunited New Zealand last month informing her that her great grandfather’s British War Medal (BWM) would be returned to her. The volunteer organisation traced Noeleen, who was known by Sue Wilson-Baker, via the NZ Tunnelling Company Facebook page. According to Ian Martyn from Medals Reunited New Zealand, Sapper George Ogden’s British War Medal was in the private collection of an Invercargill resident. The man had four NZ Tunnelling Company soldier’s medals which he had decided should all be returned to families. Sapper Ogden was also entitled to the Victory Medal for his war service.

Noeleen says the medals may have gone to one of George Ogden’s sons who both died in their 50’s with no descendants. “My line is from their sister so the medals were not forwarded on it seems,” she says. The East Tamaki resident is glad to have her great grandfather’s BWM medal in her possession in time for Anzac Day. “The medal has since been returned to me and I have had it repaired and got replica medals to wear on Anzac Day for fear of it being lost again,” she says. “It has been wonderful to get at least one medal returned to the family and the interest in my getting the medal back and of the little known volunteer organisation who try to find owners for the medals handed to them or found on places like Trade Me has been amazing.” This Anzac Day will have special significance.

Hunt for veteran’s descendents S

urviving family members of a man who will receive a tribute on Stockade Hill, Howick on ANZAC Day are being sought to share their stories. Leo Abbott, who compiles the tributes for the Howick Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) every year, is currently researching details about Joseph Alexander Dunn who fought through

the Dardanelles campaign and in Europe in World War I. When Joseph enlisted for active service he advised his occupation at the time as farming in Pakuranga. He was one of nine children born to Alexander John and Mary Ellen Dunn (nee Jenkinson) who were married in 1885 in New Zealand.

Both immigrated to New Zealand, Alexander from Ireland and Mary Ellen from England. Joseph was their third child and second son. His elder brother, Francis James Dunn, was farming for Mr Gill in Pigeon Mountain and survived the war. His younger brother, William Hope Dunn, was working for Francis as a farmer, also in Pigeon

Mountain when he enlisted. He survived World War I and served again in World War II. Mr Abbot says he would love to meet up with surviving members of the Dunn family who may still be in the catchment area of the Howick Ward. He is inviting them to share their family stories on ANZAC Day.

Knitters create a wall of poppies When Beverly Johnson, resident of Bruce McLaren Village in Howick visited the Naval Museum at Devonport earlier this year, she was captivated by the exhibition of hand-crafted remembrance poppies made by the 5000 Poppies NZ project. The original idea was developed by two Australian women, Lyn Berry and Margaret Knight, as a personal tribute to honour their fathers who fought in World War II. It culminated in a massive display of hand-made poppies from all over the world being exhibited on the steps of Federation Square and on Princes Bridge in Melbourne for Anzac Day 2015. They will soon be exhibited again as part of the Chelsea Flower Show in London next month. Bev and fellow resident Sylvia Crittenden, wanted to create a similar tribute for their own fathers and for all the residents of the village who had lost someone dear to them

A winning RSA poem will be read by Ava Purvis, of Howick Intermediate School; and Leo Abbott will read the history of Joseph Alexander Dunn who is remembered on the Stockade Hill cenotaph and fought through the Dardanelles campaign and in Europe in World War I. The minute gun fire will kick off the Howick Civic Service at 11am. The parade will assemble at 10.30am in Mellons Bay Road and veterans will march to Stockade Hill at 10.45am. Howick Brass will lead the singing and will play their national competition award winning work, Reflections in Nature by Robert Redhead. The scripture reading and prayer will be led by Pastor Mark Van Wijk, of Botany Life Community Church. Chairman of the Howick Local Board, David Collings, and Ethan McCormick, winner of the secondary college essay competition will be guest

in a war. They gathered the support of other residents, the village craft group and the apartment activities coordinator Hari, to create their own cascade of poppies for display in the village centre. “The idea grew like wildfire, spreading by word of mouth and a couple of emails to residents,” said Bev. “We sowed the seed and then everyone did their bit. ?A lot of us hadn’t knitted for a number

of years but ‘Mr Google’ helped us find patterns and we soon got the hang of it.” Knitting needles were clicking late into the night as residents fashioned their own poppies and supplied the names of loved ones lost in the war. Those names will be displayed alongside the wall-hanging, which will be unveiled for Anzac Day on Monday. Bev and Sylvia estimate there are about 450 poppies.

Mr Abbot will read the tribute at the Dawn Parade service and later at the civic lunch at the RSA Club after the 11am Civic service. ■■ Anyone who has information about the Dunn descendents can leave a message for Mr Abbot at the Howick RSA phone 534-9702 or send an email to admin@howickrsa.co.nz.

How financially fit are you? A

successful chartered accountant of 28 years, Dianne Barlow didn’t realise how financially unfit she was till she met Hannah McQueen, the founder of enableMe – Financial Personal Trainers. After being a client of Hannah’s for a couple of years and having personally experienced the dramatic change in her life she recognised the need for this service locally so Dianne purchased the local financial coaching franchise. Having recently moved from Manukau to a brand new, centrally located office at Laidlaw Way Botany South, the financial enabler and her team currently help more than 200 happy clients in East and South Auckland to live a financially fit life and achieve their financial potential whilst living the lifestyle they want.

It’s thorough, professional and fact based. I know because I speak from experience,” says Mrs Barlow.

“Not many people realise that on mortgage of say $400,000 you might pay nearly $900,000 in principal and interest back to the bank over 30 years; that is crazy!” enableMe is totally independent to any financial institution or bank. Hannah McQueen owns enableMe New Zealand and the franchisees are owned locally. At enableMe they diagnose at what financial life stage you are at; Are you starting out and want to get in control of your finances? Are you looking to build on your financial position, get rid of your mortgage sooner and build up your wealth quickly? Or are you nearing retirement and want a plan so you can sit back and enjoy your retirement lifestyle? enableMe have a patented mortgage repayment system that

helps clients save thousands of dollars in interest costs each year. On average, clients save at least $150,000 over the life of their mortgage! With a comprehensive plan everyone can achieve amazing results! Why would you pay more back to the bank than you need to? The assessment involves careful consideration of people’s income, expenses, money personality, non-negotiables, holidays, spending habits and debts. “No matter what shape a client is in, we help them reach their goals faster via astute guidance and proven process tailored to their circumstances.

Helping people manage their money smarter without feeling deprived is the ‘art’ of what enableMe does. Once an individual or a couple decides to partner with enableMe they would be part of a 12-month programme that identifies and applies financial smarts to maximise their cash surplus. Mrs Barlow says there are two parts to our program – one is having a plan and the second part is being accountable to it. We call ourselves Financial Personal Trainers and we give ongoing support by setting targets and tracking performance and meeting on a quarterly basis.

We diagnose people’s situation, put them on a plan and help them track their results,” says Dianne.

We realign your spending projections quarterly to better reflect your lifestyle and deal with curve balls that life throws at you.”

“Budgeting” is often seen as a dirty word but we work with clients on a ‘spending-plan’, so they can live a lifestyle they enjoy whilst still making financial progress.

Lobster plant opens in East Tamaki which manages the iwi’s business interests, says the East Tamaki factory - officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English on Friday - provides a key asset acquisition by Kahungunu in the fishing industry. The rock lobsters are taken from the coastal waters of New Zealand – 70 per cent from southern waters - and shipped live. They are renowned as a delicacy, particularly in China, FLC’s key market. The two largest crayfish holding depots owned by FLC in the North Island are in Masterton and Mahia, with the fishery straddling the Kahungunu

coastline. The new factory is the largest live lobster facility in the country. Total seafood exports to China are worth about $500 million a year. Lobster is the largest single seafood species at about $300m annually in exports to China. FLC accounts for 30 per cent of this volume. Jonathan Dick, Kahungunu’s director of environment and natural resources, said the iwi is the fourth largest shareholder in FLC. The new facility will provide access to skills and capability and will deliver a real return on iwi fisheries resources “unencumbered by the distor-

tions of brokers and manipulations by the big boys in the business”. It also provides optimal supply chain efficiency in the North Island, he said, with great proximity to the airport. “In 10 years, KAHC has returned significant wealth to the iwi,” said Mr Dick. Its asset portfolio has increased in value and includes with the fishing quota, shares in Aotearoa Fisheries, Napier Mussels and the FLC. “The KAHC mandate is to create more successful quota lease negotiations with new and existing partners, who are either Kahungunu fisherman or Kahun-

All dog breeds are represented, she says. There is a population distribution of dog breeds just like there is for humans for race. Some breeds are more prevalent so may be more represented. “We suspect that some of the worst injuries are caused by unregistered dogs and I suspect that some are used for dog fights,” she says. “We would love to get the figures on breeds or type of dogs offending, particularly for the major injuries.” But the authors of a report commissioned by the association and presented to its annual scientific meeting last August were not able to provide the information. “As we at NZAPS have said

risk of being bitten.” The NZAPS report says dog bites are responsible for an average of two hospital admissions a day, more than a third of them children mostly with facial injuries. The highest risk subgroups were identified as children under the age of nine years, Maori and residents in low socioeconomic areas. The tribunal can deal with issues including disagreements over boundary fences, hire purchase agreements and the loss of property. But it cannot be used for disputes about rates, taxes, benefits, ACC payments, parenting or care of children, matrimonial property, wills and ownership of land. To bring a dispute to the tri-

At the hearing each person involved tells his or her side of the dispute so it is a good idea to write down what you want to say beforehand. Bring to the hearings any letters, forms, invoices, sales slips, receipts, copies of contracts, photographs, quotes for repairs or anything else that will help to establish the facts about the dispute. You will need to attend the hearing and are allowed to

bring a support person along. But that person is not allowed to say anything at the hearing unless asked to speak by the referee. at James was a relative late starter to the game of netball. She hasn’t looked back. Last month she was acknowledged at the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre (HPNC) for reaching an incredible milestone. The dedicated Howickian has spent the past 35 years volunteering tirelessly for the sport and community she is passionate about. “I always feel like you want to give something back to the community. If you didn’t have volunteers, a lot of these sports bodies wouldn’t keep going,” she says. Looking back to where it all started, Pat admits surprisingly it wasn’t until her sister formed a team at the HPNC when she was 30 that she began to play. Pat went on to become part of the Owairoa Golden Oldie team, an experience she will never forget. “That was a lot of fun, took us to America, Hawaii, the Cook Islands,” she says. “We did it for about 24 years, it was every second year we went somewhere.” Her interest in netball expanded to include administration when she joined the Owairoa netball club committee in 1976 and she went on to be awarded life membership there in 1988. ing of team managers. Her hard work and dedication was first acknowledged in 1989 when she received a service award for the Howick Pakuranga Netball Association (HPNA) and in 1994 she received her HPNA Life Membership award. In 2001, when Pat became the HPNA treasurer, she was recognised for her dedication and service to netball receiving the Netball New Zealand Service award. As well as her role as treasurer, Pat still has her commitments as the senior draw steward with her own sub-committee helping her. She does admit, however, that it may soon be time to move on. “I would like to retire one day, sooner than later. I am looking at this being my last year, hopefully. Will be 36 years by the time I’m finished,” she laughs. Although she prefers watching indoor netball, Pat still comes down to the HPNC every Saturday to watch the games and help out where needed. It reminds her just how much time she has dedicated to the sport. “I’ve seen players go by and now I see their daughters and now sometimes it’s the daughters children I’m seeing as well. I think it’s great,” she says.

A winning start E

ven as Prime Minister John Key leads a highlevel business delegation to China, to meet President Xi Jinping to discuss an upgrade of the China New Zealand Free Trade Agreement - signed eight years ago, this week - closer to home, Deputy Prime Minister Bill English travelled to GMP Pharmaceuticals in East Tamaki. The minister was there to formally commemorate the first batch of the company’s Cowala Adult Milk Powder embossed with the New Zealand Olympic logo along with a tour of its parent company GMP Pharmaceuticals’ new and state-of-the-art soft gel production line. “Jami-Lee Ross often boasts about all the great things that are happing in his electorate but coming here I must say I am truly impressed by

the scale of things,” Mr English said, teasing the young national whip about taking pride in promoting the area. GMP entered into agreement with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to be the sole and exclusive partner in the powder-based nutritional formula category under their brand Cowala for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games and the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The turnout at GMP - a leading manufacturing company specialising in pharmaceuticals, natural health and dairy products with its main markets China and New Zealand - was impressive. It included National MP Dr Jian Yang, the People’s Republic of China in Auckland Commercial Counsellor Mr Chen Jing, New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO Kereyn Smith and Olympians Andrea Kilday (has won numerous gold med-

The inauguration of the new equipment was done by managing director Karl Ye requesting the dignitaries to put their hand on a magic ball. Showing the minister around the facility, Mr Ye pointed to the high tech Black Box system that is integrated with various recording devices such as CCTV cameras, sensors, back readers that record every critical stage of production that can be traced back three to four year. also communicates our history and the values we demonstrate daily within our interaction,” Mr Tims said. “These coins are given to those that have contributed and added value to Policing and the community.” It led Ms Collins to jokingly nudge him saying, “You have to give me one too!” Supported by 13 volunteers from Sahaayta counselling services that speak 18 languages and devoted police officers like Sergeant Gurpreet Arora and inspector Rakesh Naidoo from Wellington, the project is funded primarily by Lotteries Commission and by community donations via Total Healthcare as well

as the community arm of Nirvana Foundation of which Ranjna Patel is director. ■■ People involved with domestic violence can contact Gandhi Nivas and speak to a counsellor at 276-2977 or report the incident to the police who can refer them to the house. ■■ For further assistance, call the Family Violence Information Line on 0800- 456- 450 that is available seven days a week, from 9am-11pm, with an after-hours message redirecting callers in the case of an emergency. ■■ If you are worried about a child and don’t want to give your name, you can phone 0508 FAMILY for assistance.

to the same information so that they can assess and support the family based on all relevant information. This includes the children who may have witnessed the violence and the perpetrators who commit the violence,” Social Development Minister Anne Tolley says. “During the pilot phase, each report of family violence reported to NZ Police and high risk prison releases in Christchurch will be triaged daily and a Family Safety Plan developed that will address the risks and needs of the family. During later phases, it is anticipated that family violence disclosures to other agencies, e.g. health authorities, will also be part of the process,” Police Minister Judith Collins says. This approach is expected to replace existing models of inter-agency family violence response as the Government maintains its focus on reducing family violence and protecting the most vulnerable in our community. It is expected that the pilot will be rolled out in several locations. It will be evaluated and the Government will receive progress reports with recommendations at the end of 2016.

A more integrated and effective response to family violence is to be piloted via an innovative new approach from July 1. The Integrated Safety Response pilot will bring together a team of Police, CYF, Corrections, Health, specialist family violence NGOs and Maori service providers to support victims and their families. The pilot is part of the comprehensive cross-agency work programme overseen by the ministerial group on Family Violence and Sexual Violence. “A better way of handling reported family violence, including daily assessment meetings involving all relevant agencies, is a critical part of improving our response to family violence. This pilot has the potential to transform the way we respond as a system, manage perpetrators and keep victims safe. It incorporates the Intensive Case Management system that provides an independent victim specialist to work closely with high risk victims to keep them safe,” Justice Minister Amy Adams says. “No single agency can see the complete picture of the victim’s experience. Counties Manukau Police District Commander John Tims awarded a special Challenge Coin to founder of East Tamaki Healthcare, Ranjna Patel for having spearheaded the groundbreaking project that is now going to be replicated in Wellington and Hamilton. He said it was a very worthy project that the Counties Manukau police were going to enter in the Problem Oriented Police Awards (POP Awards) that recognise and reward excellence in the skills needed to support longterm sustainable crime prevention and reduction. “The Challenge Coin reflects Counties Manukau Police and the community working together to keep the community safe and

Settling into a first home can be complicated, but not for thousands of Howickians who have placed their trust in the experienced hands of James Donovan. The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan was established in 1969 and, through the years, it has become the preferred choice of families for generations. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protect their assets for their children and for their future.” The extremely competent team at this Howick institution also offers allencompassing law services including trusts, wills, estates, matrimonial prop-

SMEs power the economy S

mall and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of our communities. You only have to look around our local areas to realise this. They are crucial to our local economy and well-being. Most people in our neighbourhoods either work for a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME), or own and operate one. They are an essential fabric in the New Zealand way of life, environments in which a family business atmosphere is engendered, where people are treated with respect, honesty, and fairly. It boosts productivity and pride in work. Many of our local people work in the Greater East Tamaki Business Association’s catchment area, for

some of its 2000 businesses, most of which are SMEs. East Tamaki is a very significant manufacturing and distribution zone, generating $3 billion for the national economy each year. It has jobs for 30,000 people and that number is predicted to increase to 45,000 once the full development of the highly successful Highbrook Business Park is completed. That won’t be far away, I believe, as East Tamaki has higher growth rates than most in the Auckland region. It’s telling when you realise that 97 per cent of all NZ enterprises employ 20 or fewer people. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to reduce the financial and time bur-

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany dens faced by SMEs. Prime Minister John Key says our Budget 2016 will include a positive tax package that aims to make business easier for SME operators. It will make paying tax easier and more certain; reduce the burden of interest and penalties; and assist smaller businesses to better tailor payments to their own circumstances. Provisional tax is being reformed with a new pay-asyou-go option, giving smaller businesses a way to pay tax as they earn income from April

1, 2018. Use-of-money interest will also be eliminated or reduced for the vast majority. Contractors will be able to choose a withholding tax rate that suits their needs, while the ongoing 1 per cent monthly penalty will be scrapped from April 1, 2017, for new debt. As we enter the leadup period to next month’s Budget, we want business owners, employers and employees to know our priority is to see them succeed. We want them to be focusing their energies on building their enterprises, not having to navigate red tape. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Goodman kicks off three projects Goodman Property Trust (GMT) has announced the start of three new industrial developments with a total project cost of $32.38 million. The three projects, which are being developed on an uncommitted basis, are expected to generate around $2.2m of annual rental income once fully leased and income producing. The trust’s manager Goodman (NZ)’s chief executive officer, John Dakin said historically low vacancy levels are supporting a heightened level of development activity across all its Auckland estates. “With GMT’s industrial portfolio recording an occupancy rate of over 99 per cent, these three projects complement the existing development programme, ensuring the trust has the capacity to meet new demand,” he said. ■ The new warehouse developments include: ■ The Hill, a 7500 sqm facility located at the end of Pukekiwiriki Place at Highbrook Business Park in East Tamaki. ■ The Point, a 2820 sqm facility located at the end of Waiouru Road also at Highbrook Business Park. ■ The Gate, a 4930 sqm facility located on Church Street, beside the Recall facility at The Gate Industry Park in Penrose. Commencing a small number of new projects without a customer commitment has been a successful strategy for the trust with the previous two developments at Highbrook Business Park leased to GWA and Synnex well ahead of completion. GMT, an externally managed unit trust listed on the NZX, owns Highbrook Business Park.

There is nothing that beats the joy of shopping at factory outlets. It’s a bargain hunter’s delight and who doesn’t like getting their money’s worth? One of the best kept secrets in retail shopping, prices are usually low at factory outlets because the manufacturer sells directly to the consumer, thus eliminating the middlemen and their mark-ups. That apart, factory outlets are usually located away from the buzzing retail hubs, where the cost of real estate is not too high. Factory outlets were born when manufacturers began offering discounts on irregular or unsold merchandise to their employees in factories’ back rooms. When there were more goods to dump than employees could absorb, the outlets were opened to the public. Even the most fashion-conscious shopper can find stylish cloth-

Days for dentures remaining with us W

ith the introduction of developments such as fluoride in the nation’s drinking water, younger generations are no longer burdened with mouthfuls of amalgam fillings. And new technology such as crowns, root canals and bridges would suggest that the days of pulling teeth would be long gone. So are dentures a thing of the past? Not so, says Leah Taylor, owner and principal clinical denture technician at PDP Denture Studio in Pakuranga. “Some people, have inherent genetic problems and are still losing their teeth. Believe it or not, many people still neglect their teeth,” she says, “And although we have better dental care and more information is available about tooth care, we are also faced with more sugary, processed foods and drinks. Poor diet can be reflected in the mouth, so there are people still having teeth extracted.” She says that apart from neglect or genetic make-up, there are other circumstances such as unfortunate accidents falling off a horse or a bike, car accidents and she also comes across the occasional case of an assault. Leah initially trained as dental technician in Adelaide,

Australia and in the United Kingdom before coming to New Zealand in 1997, where she did post graduate training in Clinical Dental Technology at Otago University. She worked as an independent contractor in Vulcan Lane, Auckland City and then set up PDP Denture Studio in Farm Cove in 1998. She moved the practice to its current location in Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga in April 2013 and it was officially opened by Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson the following November. Leah says the PDP team works together with many local

Feedback

dentists, doctors and specialists considering every solution to ensure that dentures are the right option for the individual. “We always advise to try to save the tooth if possible, but things such as crowns and implants are not an option for everyone. For some clients a full or a partial denture is the only option.” PDP Denture Studio specialises in comprehensive denture solutions from full to partial or implant retained dentures, as well as mouth guards and snore guards. And, Leah emphasises, once the dentures are in place “it’s not the end of the line. They still have to be maintained, and we are always here to help.” The bone the denture sits on continuously shrinks away over time, she says. It’s called residual ridge resorption and it causes the dentures to become loose. Ill fitting dentures can do damage and must be relined. The Times is the only newspaper Leah has supported with advertising since she opened her business. “The newspaper works for us, particularly for a portion of the demographic group we deal with,” she says. “I like the Times because it’s delivered to our home. I don’t read any other newspapers.”

No room for cycleway

posed cycleway at Bucklands Beach and for which we have very little information. Summer sees our beaches packed and enjoyed by young and old – traffic is already congested at these times and certainly (as per the attached photo) there is no room for a cycleway to erode valuable family space – not to mention the safety aspect. Re Child rapist gets almost 20 years (Times Online, April 12). Yet again we have an individual taking advantage of not only his position, but the vulnerability of his victims. How are we to stop this? He, like any other person working with children, would have been required to have a police check. Maybe CCTV covering every part of the school with obvious exceptions would provide safety for both the children and the teachers - the children from abuse and the good teachers from untruthful claims. It’s a dilemma. Fran Barker

Yum...Hope’s sandwich makes the final cut Local resident Hope Smith has been named as one of five finalists in the Molenberg Create a Best Selling Sandwich competition. Over the last five weeks, New Zealand’s most creative sandwich architects have been vying for their moment of sandwich fame. Kiwis submitted their Molenberg Sandwich creations by taking a photo and posting it on Instagram or via www.molenberg.co.nz. Each week Molenberg selected the best sandwich creation, then sold it at The Molenberg Sandwich Shop for one week, and gave the winner the takings of their sandwich sales. Hope, from Howick, is the final week’s winner with her creation Hello Halloumi which had toasted Molenberg Original bread, halloumi, caramelised red onion, fried egg, grilled mushrooms, baby spinach and aioli. During the sixth and final week of The Molenberg Sandwich Shop

got the job. Musical director of ‘Grease’ Andy Manning, takes over the piano, filling the auditorium with foot-tapping music as he plays ‘Greased Lightning’. Students take cue and begin to sing and dance with gusto. “This production is great since it also allows us to cast a lot more boys.” That doesn’t stop the girls for auditioning for the role of actor John Casino who sings in the band. Ms Holland is all praise for the teachers and caretakers of Pakuranga College for helping with the sets. “In some schools they look at it as a big pain but here everyone is so encouraging and helpful.” Grease will be held at Pakuranga College from May 11-14 from 7-9pm.

anaging almost 100 students for the rehearsal of a school production ‘Grease’, can be a handful. But for accomplished actress and director Nancy Holland it is just a matter of clapping her hands and throwing her voice across the auditorium. The fact that the Pakuranga College students are equally excited about the upcoming musical may have something to do with the high levels of energy and fun that fills up the auditorium during rehearsals. Nancy Holland is a trained actress and dancer at Arts Educational Stage School London. “This is my third year at Pakuranga College directing the third show. Here are a few tips:

ingridvl@fr.co.nz

■■ Place the desk in a good

relationship to the window so the sun isn’t shining directly in your eyes while you work. Another option is to buy blackout curtains. ■■ Shop around for some compact furniture and accessories, such as a table, desk, chair, and lamp, and install a wall shelf on which to store binders and reference books. Put a rubber mat under the desk chair so its wheels don’t scratch the floor. ■■ Try to be consistent when integrating the workplace into your room’s decor. Avoid com-

bining ultra-modern office furniture with an antique bed. ■■ If there is enough space, set up a screen to separate the area devoted to work from the one devoted to sleep. As a bonus, this visual barrier will also help to isolate you from potential distractions. ■■ Another ingenious solution for setting up a functional work space in your bedroom is to install a wall bed. Integrated into a storage unit, it allows you to benefit from an additional work surface when it’s closed.

When it’s howling wind outside and the rain is pelting down on the roof, there is nothing like hunkering down inside with the drapes closed, lights on and snuggling up on the sofa with a good book and glass of wine in hand. There is no doubt that drapes and suitable window furnishings make all the difference to creating a warmer more insulated home. In fact, Energywise NZ says that, ‘Good curtains and blinds can reduce heat loss through windows by 60% for single glazed windows, and 40% to 50% for double glazing. The aim is to create a seal between the curtain or blind and the window, so that cold air from the window doesn’t get into the room, and warm air stays in the room’. That makes for a much more cosy and healthier home. It might surprise you to know that the team at Stackpole’s Upholstery are not only experts at reupholstering furniture, they are also very experienced at providing every solution to window furnishings you can think of. Julie Stackpole can vouch for the extra warmth of drapes. When she and her husband Nick, moved to their current 90’s built home, all of the windows had vertical blinds. “Those first two winters I froze! I couldn’t wait for the day I changed all the vertical blinds to drapes and it was like a different house. “Not only did it reduce the noise in the home, but it was instantly warmer from the minute you walked in the door.” And that doesn’t seem to be the end of the benefits. Julie adds, “I was also surprised that it also kept our house cooler in summer – being able to close the drapes against the full on sun, meant that the heat was kept

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the retail areas, is a small business that teaches students how to draw and paint. TC Fine Arts has been in business at 9 Ben Lomond Crescent for coming up to 15 years. TC Fine Arts runs seven classes a week teaching techniques in Realism, Impressionism and Abstract. Classes are three hours long and cover a variety of mediums acrylics, watercol-

our, charcoal, pastel, etc. Students can feel free to explore their own artistic interests with assistance, or be guided very methodically through a process that owner and teacher (Tony Clarke) has developed over the 15 years of teaching. Classes run on an eight week term, with four terms a year. During each term break TC Fine Arts runs a number of specific workshops, ranging from 1 to 3-days.

MHJC in good form

M

ission Heights Junior College has been serving up in the sports scene recently, taking out wins in tennis, futsal, tag rugby and swimming. Year eight student Kevin Fu was out to better his runner up position from last year in the South Eastern Zone (SEZ) tennis tournament. In an intense final Fu managed to get the five points he needed to win and take the title of tennis champion. “I was pretty happy my heart was beating so fast,” he says. Fu has been training hard, up to fifteen hours each week before and after school with

his heart set on heading to the AIMS games later in the year. MHJC’s Futsal team headed to the first SEZ Futsal competition in high spirits, making their way through some tough pool games unbeaten. In a close final against Somerville Intermediate, MHJC pushed through to claim the win. “Our adrenalin levels were really high. It’s hard to explain but we felt really good,” the boys said. The school says the SEZ competition is an important one for schools in the area. “It’s quite a unique competition because all

the other zones don’t run these competitions. South eastern zone is quite a strong zone,” says the school. Year nine student Xavier Gray and year ten student Joshua Setefano were selected for the South Auckland under 16s ripper rugby national tournament at the end of March. Despite being some of the youngest in the team, Gray and Setefano helped their team take out the final 6-4 against Porirua. In swimming, year seven student Marissa Dodd placed third overall in the 100m freestyle final at the SEZ swimming competition at Lloyd Elsmore pool.

Green Machine notches up a ton Pakuranga United Rugby Club premiers began the season with an emphatic first round win of the ARU championship over Otahuhu at Bell Park on Saturday April 16. The premiers’ hit the pitch demolishing an un-prepared Otahuhu team 100-7 after leading 50-nil at half-time. Top scorers were midfielders George Emosi with three tries, Lino Tiatia with two and outside back Aula Silipa with two. First five-eighths Nick Smith kicked eight conversions. This win follows on from the premier’s victory in the Waka Nathan pre-season tournament the previous weekend, defeating Waitemata 27-23. Pakuranga United take on College Rifles this Saturday at College Rifles Rugby Club from 2.45pm.

Beachlands welcomes triathlon Last week, approximately 200 kids from 33 schools swarmed to Beachlands to compete in the Beachlands Kids Triathlon. The year four-eight students represented their schools in individual and teams events on a new course through Te Puru Park and Omana Regional Park. Maraetai Beach School student Francesca Hickey claimed first place in the year five girls’ category. Finlay Smith from Beachlands took first in the year five boys’ category followed closely by Charlton Brock also from Beachlands. Kiani Taituha from Beachlands Primary School claimed the year six girls’ title. Beachlands year four teams C Taituha and A Caesar, and E Brown and C Fitzpatrick claimed first and second place respectively in their event. With 55 volunteer marshals and fantastic support from sponsors, event organiser Steven Brindell says it was a very successful event.

Pre-season workout for Ormiston College Last week 92 students from Ormiston Senior College travelled to the Waikato to participate in the school’s first sports exchange. During the mini Waikato tour, Ormiston faced Morrinsville College, Hauraki Plains College and Matamata College. Ormiston College’s acting senior leader Mark Snoad welcomed the idea of a sports exchange to develop the school’s sports programme and build a strong sporting culture within the school. “The sports exchange initiative is a significant one for our school and we hope it will be the start of a regular fixture in the calendar. “It was a great opportunity for

some close pre-season games against quality opposition and a chance to form closer links with a few Waikato schools. “Our hosts have already discussed repeating the initiative next year,” he said. Facing Morrinsville College, Ormiston won the boys’ footall, basketball and girls’ hockey. In their second big win of the day, Ormiston took out the boys’ football against Hauraki Plains College. Matamata College were hard to beat, taking out netball, volleyball, hockey and football while Ormiston managed to take out the boys’ basketball by one point.

Dagg still has flair

Macleans take control Macleans College dominated the winner’s podium last week taking out four titles during the three day pre-season winter tournament hosted by the college. Macleans took out the first XV rugby competition, premier boys’ hockey competition, premier boys’ basketball, and 9A netball competition. More than 500 students were involved in the tournament from nine schools including Pakuranga College, Howick College and Botany Downs Secondary College. Western Heights High School in Rotorua also competed taking away the premier boys and premier girls football competitions and the premier girl’s hockey competition. Howick College was almost unbeaten in the netball, taking out three of the grade competitions. Macleans College deputy principal Andrew Mackenzie says the successful tournament was an important event for the school. “It is obvious to see how important and integral sport is to teenagers from all schools in our city and across NZ.” “A high level of skill was shown, along with sportsmanship and fair play.” The tournament was a great way to gear up the teams, giving them a

I chance to play together before the winter season begins. “This was a great experience to meet other young players, enjoy themselves and gain some experience before the winter season starts next term.” “It was also a good chance for coaches to trial players and work on combinations before the start of the season,” Mr Mackenzie says.

n a country blessed with so many fullback options, it was good to see Israel Dagg remind the All Black selectors he’s far from a spent force with a great comeback performance in the Crusaders 32-15 Super Rugby win against the Jaguares in Christchurch. At his best when he and Cory Jane were the All Blacks’ outstanding backs during their 2011 World Cup triumph, Dagg looked set to cement the test fullback berth for many years with his incisive running, long punting and soundness in taking the high ball. Unfortunately for him, through a combination of injury and fall in form, his confidence was eroded with Ben Smith stepping into the breach and performing magnificently. But with Nehe MilnerSkudder and Waisake Naholo both out for much of this year with injuries, there is a possibility the selectors might wish to move Smith to the right wing for the mid-year test series against Wales. If so, the favourites for his fullback role would have been Beauden Barrett or Damien McKenzie before Dagg capped his outstanding game

Agnew’s Angle against the Jaguares with two sharp tries. Meanwhile Barrett also returned to his best at firstfive in also scoring two tries in the Hurricanes 38-13 triumph against the Rebels when he hit the ball at pace, kicked astutely and fired sharp passes to his outside backs. What was especially pleasing was his improved playmaking skills which have been such a feature of the performances produced this season from Aaron Cruden, Lima Sopoaga and McKenzie. Unlike Dagg, all four have goal-kicking credentials to back their claim with Sopoaga and McKenzie the most consistent. Meanwhile, while the Blues had cause to celebrate their 23-18 win against the Sharks, the loss of Rene Ranger because of a ruptured ACL and the Ioane brothers, Rieko and Akira, to the national sevens squad, is a huge blow. Having previously suffered

a serious neck injury which required surgery, Ranger lacked his old pace and some of his passes failed to hit their mark. But at least he tried to be creative and remained superb at the breakdown. With Rieko Ioane backing up his outstanding try against the Chiefs with another against the Sharks, he will be a welcome addition to Sir Gordon Tietjens injury ravaged sevens side, as will brother Akira. However their loss is a big one for Blues coach Tana Umaga who, however, should have gained satisfaction from Steven Luatua’s form against the Sharks. Meanwhile another ACL injury, this one to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, has been a devastating blow to the Warriors who scored a deserved 24-20 NRL win against the formidable Bulldogs in Wellington. Fortunately Tui Lolohea’s versatility allows him to cover Tuivasa-Sheck’s fullback position nicely although it’s a pity he hasn’t had more time to develop his game at standoffhalf after performing so well on the wing.
