tion. Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) went on trial earlier this month in the High Court at Auckland for burning and killing the 21-yearold Botany Pak’nSave worker. Detective Inspector Dave Lynch of Counties Manukau Police says the guilty verdict is a “great result for Mr Prasad’s

2013. He withdrew $30,050, his life savings, while Kumar looked on. Throughout the course of the trial, the Crown presented a range of evidence from CCTV footage and bank transactions to phone records as well as called upon nearly 70 witnesses to testify. ➤ Turn to Page 3

he number of crimes committed in east Auckland is raising questions among concerned locals. Counties Manukau East Police’s latest statistics show that the district experienced a rise in burglaries, robberies, public place assaults and stolen vehicles compared to the same period last year. Burglaries increased by nearly 20 per cent, robberies by more than 35 per cent, public place assaults by 25 per cent and stolen vehicles have spiked 41 per cent. It contrasts with national crime data released yesterday showing

recorded crime dropped. A frustrated Pakuranga business owner and local who did not want to be named says he was left with nearly $10,000 worth of damage as a result of break-ins in the past year. “I want to ďŹ nd out if there is an inquiry going into crime in this area. Are things getting worse or is it just me? And is something being done about it?â€? Numerous businesses in the Pakuranga and Botany areas have been targeted, some repeatedly, including Burswood Liquor, Top Pretty salon in Pakuranga Plaza, Pita House eat-

Howick local Gary Bielby says his son’s car was stolen from Lloyd Elsmore Park last Tuesday, prompting him to look into the number of vehicles stolen in Counties Manukau over the past six months. “It was more than 400. I was astounded with the number – it’s a huge number and more often than not the cars are never recovered so there are obviously people doing it for a living. He says the Mazda Familia 4WD

station wagon that was taken had been in his family for 25 years. “It was quite a unique high spec vehicle in very, very good condition. The gearbox was probably worth $1500. Detective senior sergeant Darrell Harpur, head of Counties Manukau East Police’s criminal investigation branch (CIB) says the police are aware of the community’s concerns and are doing all they can to combat crime. “Volume crime has been a huge priority for us. QUICK PUZZLE NO. 7700

THE intensification programme (Times, March 30) around the city centre in Auckland has its place for childless couples living close to their workplace. However, that is not what I am seeing. Firstly, I believe because of our small population, that it should be every New Zealand child’s birthright to grow up surrounded by trees, birds, fresh air and all that nature offers. In Kingsland I am seeing seven and eight-storey apartment blocks, mostly filled with new immigrant families and children playing on miniscule concrete balconies, often on the seventh and eighth floor. In my view, these new immigrants are being exploited because that environment is the same as the one they left behind. If this is all about the yield to the landlord, then heaven help us. This is all about councils and governments, by stealth, changing Kiwi attitudes and taking away children’s healthy environment so they can fill their coffers and, I might add, pockets all in the name of greed. Gary Hollis, Howick

Painting neglected

I AM really disgusted at the state of the beautiful painting that has been completely left on Rices Mall. I had not seen it for sometime as we had a lot to do as we were going into Bruce Maclaren retirement village, so we haven’t had the time to go and look at the large paintings. There are two of them. But they appear to be neglected which is a shame that such an icon of Howick is so uncared for. I hope the council will do something about this. June Crooke, Bucklands Beach

Dangerous parking I completely agree with the comments in your recent article “School run nightmare for parents (Times, March 26). The school in Golflands Drive suffers from exactly the same dangerous parent driving/ parking behaviour. What surprises me is that despite various suggestions from the local residents, via Auckland Transport officials, the school management team are very reticent to adopt improvements and continue with the status quo. In fact, just recently they have had the children strung across the entrance to the school entrance holding placards and chanting “stay away from our bus bay. Interesting since it is the children’s parents that are causing the problems.

Festival ‘failure’

The annual Farm Cove river festival was held recently with the council taking over the running from Rotary. In past years, this has been a very successful event with a wide participation from many groups (last year even had the Jaguar Club) and excellent sup-

Helicopter parents

Further to your front page article ‘School run nightmare for parents’ (Times, March 26). Having lived in the area for 45 years, we have seen the problem getting worse and worse all due to ‘helicopter parents’. Our message to the parents is this: Make the little darlings walk or cycle from home, rain, hail or shine. 1. It would help their fitness levels. 2. Less cars on the road!! 3. Put them on a bus! There is no need for these parents to be clogging our roads. When our children were attending school they either walked, cycled or caught a bus. Nothing has changed only these stupid, hovering parents! The children need to stand on there on two feet and think for themselves. This is, despite having ample space to improve the flow of traffic and provide short term parking/drop off points for parents on ground inside the school which is currently unused, Due consideration for parent/ staff parking and drop off points should be taken into account during the planning process and before consent is given which would avoid the difficulties we are now experiencing. Botany Downs College is an ideal example where consideration has been given to parking and dropping off of children and this has been provided for during the planning and works extremely well, resulting in less frustration for parents and a much safer environment for the children. The event was, by the council’s own admission, a failure (they put it down to the weather but as a local resident, people did come but quickly left due to the calibre of the event.  One of the many reasons why our rates have increased and why councils should stick to being a council and not be involved in running events etc.  Paul Brown Concerned Farm Cove/ Auckland Resident

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, April 2, 2015 — 3

Times announces revamp T

HE Times is ushering in the second quarter of the year with a number of refreshing changes. Key amongst these is a redesign of the Howick and Pakuranga Times which been a cornerstone of our community for more than four decades. You’ll notice we’ve decluttered the front page and incorporated a more vibrant design approach with a focus on graphic elements to help readers navigate the papers more easily. The masthead has also had a slight tweak but retains the brand you’ve all come to know. Parent company Times Newspapers – which has been publishing its community newspapers for more than 40 years – announced a major change with the recent exciting re-launch of the Howick and Botany Times, re-named Botany and Ormiston Times to reflect the development of one of New Zealand’s newest towns, including the Ormiston Town Centre straddling Ormiston Road, Flat Bush. The company also heralded the revitalised look for the Thursday

Firm names its new editor One final announcement is the appointment of a managing editor Nicholas Krause. Nick was a former group editor with the company, guiding the paper to a number of national industry awards. He has a long background in the news industry. In the last 10 years has he has worked as news editor with the Aucklander which won the best community newspaper award Howick and Pakuranga Times. Both newspapers aim to better reflect the needs of communities they serve. With continued investment in the latest technology, the new looks are a more accurate reflection of how the publishing business and our community has evolved. It was also announced that it made sense to drop the Monday edition of the Howick and Pakuranga Times and bridge the gap more efficiently through tech-

He says his team had success recently with a burglary at the Porterhouse Grill restaurant in Pakuranga Plaza. “An 18-year-old man from Otara was arrested for burglary and has been remanded in custody. We are also actively seeking a 17-year-old suspect,”

says Mr Harpur. Last week the police executed three search warrants in Bombay, Waiuku and Awhitu Peninsula, arresting a 31-yearold man in connection with a Cockle Bay burglary on March 17 where firearms were stolen, says Mr Harpur. “The tactical crime unit started at 7am and finished at 5am the next day– 22 hours on the trot,” says Mr Harpur. will soon be apparent, he says. “Statistically after one or two strategic arrests, [the crime rates] will drop off for a while.” Mr Harpur says the best way to prevent crime is for the public to take action themselves. “If you own a 1990s Nissan, Subaru or Mazda, it’s a target. Lock your car, get an alarm, put a steering lock on it and do all you can to prevent it being stolen.” Recently Botany Crimewatch Patrol checked 900 vehicles around the Botany area, finding nearly half with easy-to-steal items visible inside the car,

which included handbags, laptops, shopping bags, sunglasses and GPS devices. Nine of the vehicles checked were left completely unlocked. Meanwhile Police Minister Michael Woodhouse welcomed crime data released yesterday showing recorded crime dropped by more than 100,000 offences over the last five years. The 2014 recorded crime rate dropped by 4.2 per cent per head of population, with 10,022 fewer recorded crimes compared to the year before, and 101,016 fewer offences in 2014 compared to 2009.

Found guilty of murder ➤➤From page 1 The Crown found evidence of Kumar borrowing more than $7000 from Mr Prasad in the time leading up to his death. Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins said he had no intention of paying it back. Using the debt as a pretext, Kumar set up a meeting with Mr Prasad on January 30, 2013 to borrow more money purportedly to start up a new business. Permal was roped in, the Crown said, to commit the violence required to steal the money although Kumar was the “instigator and driving force” for the murder. On the night of his death, Mr Prasad drove to Permal’s workplace, Frucor Beverages in Wiri, where he met both defendants. They then left, and at 9.52pm Mr Prasad sent his father a text from the Drury area saying he would be home late and was playing pool in Manukau. At 10.33pm, Kumar and Permal were seen at a Mobil petrol station in Papakura where Permal purchased more than 15 litres of petrol in two petrol containers using money stolen from Mr Prasad. They then drove to semi-rural McRobbie Road where they doused Mr Prasad with petrol while he was alive, and set him alight. In the days following, the pair went on a “spending spree” with Mr Prasad’s money, using it on tattoos, shopping, car upgrades, computer hardware, liquor stores and gaming. The day after the murder, Kumar planned to leave the country and tried to buy a flight ticket to South Africa. Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins said Kumar had a “totally unrealistic assessment of his ability to get away with it”. They have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to reappear for sentencing on May 7.

Anzac bake-off call-up A CALL is out for a baker who can deliver a special twist on the tasty traditional Anzac biscuit. The Anzac biscuit bake-off is a time to bake in memory of this year’s important day in New Zealand history. Biscuits can be delivered to Howick Library on April 15 between 12-2pm and the entries will be judged at 3pm. World War I and Anzac Day will also be commemorated with a display in the library’s front display room and a static display in the 940 area of the collection and display area at the entrance. A special Anzac themed story time will be held at 10.30am on April 17 with stories, craft and an Anzac biscuit. Howick historian, Alan La Roche, will deliver ‘Howick – those that served’, on April 22 at 10.30am. He will talk about the social and economic ramifications of World War I on Howick. In 1914, Howick had a population of 600 and from those, 200 men and women were called up for duty. The story, ‘Fallen Heroes’, behind the names on the Stockade Hill War Memorial will be delivered at 11am on April 24. The following week, on May 27, Micaela Meder, a New Zealand youth ambassador who attended the Gallipoli Peninsula Anzac commemoration, will talk about her experiences. For more information phone the library on 534-5301 or online at www. aucklandlibraries.govt.nz. ■■ Monday-ised Anzac Day is in effect this year. Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, and so the following Monday is a day off work.

Changes to provide more support for families A

dditional support for families through an extension to Paid Parental Leave and an increase to the minimum wage came into effect yesterday. Paid Parental Leave extends from 14 to 16 weeks from yesterday and by another two weeks next year, while further improvements to the scheme are also being progressed. The adult minimum wage will increase from $14.25 to $14.75 an hour from yesterday and the starting-out and training hourly minimum wages will increase by 40 cents to $11.80 an hour.

“These initiatives are good news for families and deliver on the Government’s commitment to helping families, but there’s more to come,” Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse says. “The Government has also confirmed a package of measures to further improve access to Paid Parental Leave. “These measures include extending eligibility to more workers and increasing the flexibility of the scheme to better reflect the diversity of modern work and family arrangements and make it eas-

ier for parents to stay connected to the workforce. “The Government is committed to helping children get a good start in life and that New Zealand’s parental leave framework better supports Kiwi families.” The Paid Parental Leave changes will be reflected in a Bill to be introduced around the middle of the year. They include: • Extending parental leave payments to non-standard workers (such as casual, seasonal, and employees with more than one employer) and those who have

recently changed jobs. • Extending entitlements to ‘primary carers’ other than biological or formal adoptive parents such as permanent guardians, Home for Life carers, whangai parents, and grandparents. • Enabling employees to take the leave more flexibly, by mutual agreement with the employer To complement the changes to the Paid Parental Leave, the Parental Tax Credit has also increased from $150 a week to $220 from 1 April 2015 and the payment period was extended from eight weeks to 10 weeks.

Artistic talents unveiled She was thrown out of art class as a child but her paint brush is flourishing many years on. Maraetai artist Sue Collyns will be one of more than 50 art students taking part in an exhibition in Pakuranga. The annual exhibition is staged at the Tony Clarke Fine Arts School in Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga from April 8-12, from 10am-4pm. Ms Collyns adopts a versatile approach to painting and her subjects can be “anything and everything” with a focus on realism. She first began her foray into the art world five years ago under the tutelage of art teacher

Tony Clarke. “A friend showed me Tony Clarke’s website and I just fell in love with his paintings.” The real estate agent and mother of two enjoys painting portraits and says it is a great way of talking to people. She is always on the lookout for new themes and often obtains inspiration from photographs. “I look at textures in pictures and what challenges me. It can be hair, fur, clothing, a rock. It’s what I can learn from each picture.” The public can view paintings at the exhibition as well as witness students in the process of painting.

When adjusted for inflation, the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 6.8% and values are now 3.7% above the 2007 peak. The Auckland market has increased 13.9% year on year, 4.6% over the past three months and 45.8% since 2007. When adjusted for inflation values are 13.0% over the past year and are 24.6% above the 2007 peak. “The rate of growth in Auckland is exceptionally strong while values are rising more slowly than they were this time last year in Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin,” QV National spokesperson Andrea Rush said. “Value increases are beginning to plateau in parts of the Christchurch market as the supply of new homes begins to meet the demand created by the earthquakes.” Values in Tauranga and Invercargill rose moderately, while the Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin markets are quite flat.

CP0180

“The expectation is that Auckland will continue to accelerate while the rest of the main centres will remain steady with values either moderately increasing, staying flat or in some cases declining slightly.” Home values have continued to show rapid growth across the SuperCity in the first quarter of 2015. Auckland City values were led by Auckland City-South which saw a whopping increase of 5.4 per cent over the past three months and 17.9 per cent year-on-year which is the highest year-on-year increase in Auckland between March 2014 and March 2015. Auckland City-East values also accelerated 5.1 per cent since January and 15.4 per cent yearon-year. Auckland City-Central values were also up 4.7 per cent over the past three months 11.3 per cent year on year. Waitakere City values also rose an exceptional 5.2 per cent over the past three months, and values there were also up 14.1 per cent year-on-year and are now 47.7 per cent higher than during the peak of 2007. In Manukau, Manukau-East values rose the most over the past three months, accelerating by 5.5 per cent, and they increased 13.5

per cent year on year; ManukauNorth West values also increased by 4.9 per cent over the past three months and 16.2 per cent year on year; while Manukau-Central values rose 4.2 per cent since January and 11.5 per cent year on year. On the North Shore, values in North Shore-Coastal accelerated 5.5 per cent over the past three months and 13.2 per cent year on year; North Shore–North Harbour values increased 4.3 per cent since January and 12.5 per cent year on year; while North ShoreOnewa values rose 3.7% over the pat three months and 14.1% year on year. “The Government’s new Homestart policy may lead to increased activity amongst first home buyers around the country and it will remain to be seen whether this has an impact on values. “The Reserve Bank is considering tighter rules on borrowing to property investors which it has said may now be defined as those who own more than one property and thus could cover any property the owner does not live in. “Currently close to 40 per cent of all residential house sales in New Zealand are purchased by those who own two or more properties and the Reserve Bank’s changes could come into effect as early as July 1 this year.”

Kids’ efforts mark 100th anniversary THE window at the Antique Shop in Howick has been festooned with poppies hand-made by children from Mellons Bay School. Linda Clifton from the shop said around 200 poppies made of anything from paper card to pottery will grace the shop window – arranged by Briana Woolliams – for the month of April to mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Mellons Bay School principal Judy Brown said students would also be making an art installation of poppies for the school. Auckland needs 528 new plasma donors by the end of the year in order to keep up with the constant demand for plasma and plasma-derived products, according to New Zealand Blood Service’s ‘Hearts of Gold’ campaign figures. Auckland plasma donors currently make up 23 per cent of all plasma donors from around the country. Healthcare services in Auckland need on average 210 units of plasma per week, and there is no substitute for it. With clinical requirements for plasma-derived products increasing at a rate of 5-9 per cent per year around the country, demand is only set to increase NZBS says. The Donor Centre in Epsom is one of seven centres around the country at which plasma donations can be made, and an appointment takes approximately 60-90 minutes. To find out more about becoming a plasma donor, visit www.nzblood. co.nz or phone 0800-448-325.

AIRDRESSERS are known for experimenting with different hair styles. But Pamela Dickinson went one step further having her shoulder-length locks shaved off for charity. The senior stylist at Vivo Hair and Beauty Howick was inspired by salon manager Nikki Botha’s decision to support Shave for a Cure, Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s signature fund-raising event. The decision came in the wake of Ms Botha’s sadness in losing her mother-in-law to cancer. She called on the services of her friend’s five-year-old, Kosher Love Lopes, who has been in and out of hospital for most of her little life as she has battled a blood disease. “As hair stylists, we play around and have many different hair styles, Ms Dickinson says. “But I decided it was something I could do; have my hair shaved for charity rather than just a new cut. “It’s a nice experience making people aware of the fund-raising, she says. “Often it’s just an awareness thing. There is nothing brave about having your hair shaved. But those people going through their cancer treatment are amazingly brave. Kosher’s journey has been tough for her family, Ms Botha says. “When I lost my mother-inlaw it made it so much more eyeopening. They are so brave to go through all that trauma. People don’t realise until they have walked a mile in their shoes and discover what someone can suf-

Gems for the jewels in your life B HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE: Kids can learn about how cities evolve over time at MOTAT in April. Photo supplied

Building a city H

ELPING to build a model metropolis is on the April school holiday agenda. In its latest Holiday Experience, MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) is launching a programme ‘We Built This City’. It’s designed to encourage kids to unleash their inner designer as they get hands-on in an array of fun activities to teach them how cities evolve over time. In the Discovery Dome visitors will enjoy constructing and decorating their own modular pods to help build a model city for the future. Michael Frawley, MOTAT’s chief executive says while the interactive experience is fun for kids, it also gives them first-hand insight into the technology involved with city development and inspires them to become the innovative planners of the future. The ‘Way Back When’ activities planned for the MOTAT Historic Village will allow families to discover the tools and technologies used for building in the past. They will be able to try out traditional Maori tools as well as early pioneer building techniques. They will begin to appreciate how

SC3302

electricity and power tools have changed the way things are done today. Visitors will be challenged to build their own shelter using only basic materials such as rope, sticks and canvas as the early European settlers in New Zealand did. The activities will require team work and are suited for children over seven years. Younger visitors will be able to tinker in the ‘Barrows to Bulldozers’ zone in the Activity Centre where they will be able to get their hands on a variety of building blocks, toy construction vehicles and tools. As an added bonus, visitors to MOTAT on April 11, 12, 18, 19 can get hands-on with the ‘Doug the Digger Roadshow’ which allows children of all ages to operate a mini CAT digger under instruction and in a safe, supportive, worksite environment. ■■ ’We Built this City’ is open from 10am-5pm on April 3-19; ‘Auckland Lego User Group at 10am-5pm on April 3-6; Minecraft Architecture Workshops from 10am-2pm on April 13, 14, 15 ($55 per participant); MOTAT Live from 10am-5pm on April 19. Normal admission fees apply. More information is online at www.motat.org.nz.

eautiful jewellery has the edge when finding one’s way to a woman’s heart. And for anyone seeking that very special bespoke piece then Howick Village Jeweller is the place to visit. There, owner and master craftsman Chris Schweder is renowned for creating one-of-a-kind jewellery – perfect for Mother’s Day. The Schweder collection of bespoke jewellery exudes the elegance and creativity associated with this award-winning jeweller. “This special range complements off-the-shelf styles made in-house although all are about capturing the essence of the client in the creation of personalised jewellery, be it a ring, earrings or pendant,” Chris says. An established business of more than 30 years, Chris says for many years jewellery-making was like a secret art, with customers far removed from the process and unable to fully receive the advice they needed from the people making the process happen. Today, his customers can see craftsmen at work in a visible workshop where everything is carried out on the premises. Chris says, while rings remain a constant, for engagements, weddings and anniversaries, people today are much more likely to purchase a beautiful piece just because they love it. “Jewellery is very much a part of the total look of modern day dress-

ing and customers like the idea of personalised pieces.” Of course, Howick Village Jeweller also retains highly skilled staff to help repair, service, maintain and remodel existing pieces. Chris says it’s easy to forget that jewellery suffers from wear and tear just like other items. This may be the result of being worn when carrying out garden or household chores and being subject to damage from cleaning agents. Even jewellery tumbled together in a box can take a battering. Lack of maintenance can lead to costly and upsetting loss of precious stones but with a regular check, and cleaning, any deterioration can be detected – a super deluxe jewellery clean and polish is just $8 per item. Remodelling of items is also popular. In the past women might not have thought to have a ring remodelled even if it was dated or no longer to her taste. Now Chris frequently remodels rings that no longer suit ageing hands or which have been inherited but the setting is worn or doesn’t appeal. “If the stones are reset in an

entirely new design, an item of great sentimental value can have a new lease of life.” Of course, it is Chris’ creative spark which sets Howick Village Jeweller apart and his Schweder bespoke jewellery is a reflection of that inspired artistry. “My clients like to know that when I make something for them, they are not going to have a ‘she’s wearing my dress’ moment.” For many clients, these individually crafted pieces are ideal to mark a special occasion. While the original celebration contributes to the special nature of these pieces, as time passes, memories associated with wearing the creation continue to grow. Most people will ensure their jewellery is covered for loss or damage by insurance and Howick Village Jeweller provides an onsite valuation service which can be available the same day if prior booking is made. “An up to date valuation of jewellery places the owner in a strong position if an insurance claim is made. Valuations can also help structure wills fairly for distribution of such assets in the future.” View Howick Village Jeweller’s fantastic and informative website and Facebook page for great tips and information, or visit the shop: Howick Village Jeweller 98 Picton Street, Howick. Integrated fares here next year BETTER alignment of short and longdistance fares are planned in readiness for integrated fares in the SuperCity next year. Auckland Transport says as the pace of transport changes pick up, improving the fare structure with integrated fares will allow the introduction of the New Network including more frequent services on key routes at a minimum average of every 15 minutes from 7am-7pm seven days a week. “This is along with the introduction of the AT HOP card, electric trains on the rail network, the first step towards the construction of the City Rail Link (CRL) and an investigation into the benefits of light rail,” AT says. This year’s public transport review includes small increases of five-10 cents for short distance (stage one and two trips) for those using the AT HOP card. There will be no increase on longer AT HOP trips on buses and trains, other than for stage five journeys which receive a tertiary concession. Meanwhile Half Moon Bay ferry fares have gone up compared with those for Hobsonville/West Harbour which have gone down. The aim is to more closely align ferry fares across different ferry services so that people travelling similar distances will pay similar fares. The Half Moon Bay cash fare for adults has gone up from $8.30 to $8.60 (AT HOP $6.64 to $6.88); child fare $4.90 to $5.10 (AT HOP $3.92 to $4.08). The Pine Harbour cash fare for adults is up from $12.50 to $12.80 (AT HOP from $10 to $10.20); child fare $7.50 to $.60 (AT HOP $5.05 to $5.16).

also a good problem solver in maths and science. The areas I mostly had difficulty in were my reading comprehension, vocabulary, dictation and spelling. Also, I have made good progress in maths, but I still need to keep improving until I get to the top. During my time at Kip McGrath, my reading and maths have greatly improved. Not only have they both improved, but my school reports and SRA results are rapidly going up, thanks to my teacher Judi, who has guided me through my learning. My next goal is getting ready for college which will have more maths and reading.

Jaycob is clearly a reliable, driven and talented young man who has a bright future ahead of him. HAPPY EASTER

2015

The Easter Bunny Transforming your Easter eggs becomes the Gluing on a few feathers makes for a perfect finishing touch.

Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition in many countries around the globe. As it is an activity that all the family can enjoy, it should come as no surprise that decorating eggs is as popular as it ever was, at this time of year.

Or, a half of an empty eggshell can quickly be turned into a nest for a fluffy pipe-cleaner baby chicken.

family pet

If the Easter Bunny is now widely associated with Easter eggs and the celebration of spring in the northern hemisphere, we can thank the Germans.

A giant egg The traditional Easter egg A truly ambitious project would be to make a giant paper mache Easter egg.

Gather the children around the kitchen table for a creative session with lots of different coloured gouache and felt pens.

The first step is to buy a large balloon, which will have an oval shape once it’s inflated. Then use a mixture of flour and water to glue three or four layers of newspaper strips on to the balloon.

Be warned: it’s very easy to break the shells if they’re not handled with care. Creative spirits will no doubt want to experiment; try using foods such as beets and onion skins to colour the eggs naturally. No need for toxic products here! Just a couple of pots and a bit of hot water is enough.

Decorating eggs for Easter is still a tradition in many countries around the world. Photo supplied

Creating characters

Use a whole egg to make your own chick: just cut out a beak and two little feet from a piece of orange card stock and stick them on the shell.

Transforming eggs into different characters is also great fun.

Hang the balloon up for at least 12 hours so that the paper mache has time to dry. It can then be painted or decorated as desired. Once that is done, the top end of the egg can be cut off in order to fill it with lollies. The kids will love this decorative centrepiece!

On the eve of Easter Sunday, it was customary in this country to prepare a small nest in one’s garden. Often a carrot was placed in it as a gift for the small furry animal that would visit all the homes during the night, leaving chocolate eggs behind. These customs may have changed over the years but even today the bunny continues to be strongly associated with Easter. Some take this tradition even further by getting a real bunny as a family pet. They may devour slippers and eat through telephone wires, but many people find them incredibly adorable and oh-so soft and furry.

HAPPY EASTER

Hop in to adopt your own bunny

SPCA Auckland CEO Christine Kalin, says “Easter and the school holiday period is the perfect time for families to adopt a rabbit because the extra time at home provides the chance to bond with the bunny. A change in scenery can be stressful so settling into a regular feeding and exercise routine will help the rabbit feel at home quickly.” While Easter is a good time to adopt because new owners will have extra time at home with their new pet, adopting a rabbit is a long term commitment. “Rabbits have a long lifespan, more than 10 years for some, so owners need to be prepared to love and care for these creatures for the rest of the animal’s life,” says Christine. To help new owners know how to care for their new rabbit, SPCA Auckland has created the following bunny care tips: Living arrangements Rabbits can be easily toilet trained, so they make great pets even if you have a

Happy Easter

Rabbits love a good obstacle course and can be trained to partake. Children can build tunnels and mazes and patiently train their rabbit friends (adult supervision recommended).

Most Kiwis will be taking home chocolate bunnies this weekend, but SPCA Auckland is calling for people to make the long-term commitment to adopt a real rabbit. The Auckland shelter has more than 20 rabbits in need of loving homes and the approaching long Easter weekend is the perfect time to adopt, giving new owners extra time at home with their new fluffy family member.

small home. If your rabbit is going to spend some time outside, you’ll need to build a hutch and run to keep them safe from predators and the elements. Wild rabbits live in underground burrows and domestic bunnies still crave hidey-holes to make them feel safe. Make sure their home has lots of toys, boxes, baskets and tunnels to make them feel at home. Diet While most of us will be nibbling on chocolate come Easter weekend, it’s off the menu for rabbits. They need fresh water, hay and grass every day to stay healthy. Other greens including cabbage, puha doc and dandelions are also a favourite, but for a real treat rabbits enjoy apples and the occasional carrot. Bread, nuts and grains are bad news for bunnies though. Affection While he or she may be shy at first, rabbits are highly sociable creatures and need love and affection just like everyone else. Play with them, give them cuddles and spend time with them every day. The more you do it, the friendlier they will become.

2015

Rabbits and children get along famously, though they’re best suited to children older than eight years. Grown-ups will still need to supervise play time to make sure both rabbit and child stays safe and happy. Grooming Just like us, rabbits need regular grooming to keep their fur soft and tangle free. Regular brushing is both good for the rabbit and important bonding time. How many? Rabbits love company. In the wild they live in family groups so they will appreciate a bunny pal in a human home too. Rabbits must be properly introduced and, just like people, not all bunnies get along, so please talk to the SPCA before adopting a second bunny. SPCA Auckland has several already bonded pairs available for adoption so you can take home a ready-made family.

Trading Hours

Hop on down to SPCA Auckland from 10-4pm, seven days a week, to adopt your own Easter bunny. It is closed to the public on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. You can preview the rabbits available at www.spcaauckland.org. nz. Please call on 256 7300 before visiting to make sure there are still rabbits suitable for adoption available.

People with a sweet-tooth should forget about calorie counting and just enjoy themselves at Easter.

Every year brings new treats for our taste buds. Chocolate makers refine their recipes and offer new flavours, as eclectic as they are distinctive.

Next to rejoicing in the resurrection, everyone knows that there’s no better way to celebrate Easter than by eating loads of chocolate and maybe even a few lollies.

From the traditional milk chocolate, which is always a children’s favourite, to peppery chocolate, there seems to be no limit to the imaginations of these artisans.

And, if you feel like it, why not make your very own desserts? Of course, for Christians around the world, the real reason for the event is to remember Jesus Christ and what He represents.

Believers celebrate Jesus’ resurrection

EASTER CHURCH SERVICES

10 — A Times Newspapers Supplement — Easter 2015

Besides Christmas, the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter is the most important event on the Christian calendar. For some of the more traditional Christian churches, Easter marks the end of Holy Week and the period of Lent. Holy week starts on Palm Sunday, with the celebration of the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. Later in the week, Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper.

CD1743

On this evening, bread, which represents the body of Christ, and wine, which represents the blood of Christ, is shared in remembrance of Jesus’ last meal with the apostles. Next, Good Friday is a day of mourning as people remember the torture and suffering of Jesus on the cross, as well as His terrible death. Nothing is celebrated on Holy Saturday until dusk. Rather, churches are cleaned, and in the Catholic Church, the tabernacle is left empty and open. In very traditional churches, an Easter vigil to celebrate the resurrection starts in the evening and culminates with a rousing Easter Sunday service, full of joy and song.

Many families have a tradition of going to church on Easter Photo supplied Sunday even if they go at no other time of year.

In Europe, many children are familiar with a legend that tells of how church bell chimes fly away to Rome on Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday

(Maundy is from the Latin mandatum, meaning command) and will return on Easter Sunday in time for the celebrations.

And in many countries, faithful Catholics await Easter as the day when the Pope gives a special blessing for believers and for the entire world.

Everyday Heroes, Botany Town Centre By Farida Master

AN you tell which of these is a real firearm, replica firearm, air weapon, imitation firearm? Get it one hundred per cent correct first time and you will win a police carabiner clip. This was the message on the note near a plethora of firearms displayed at one of the Counties Manukau police exhibits at the Everyday Heroes event last Saturday, in the buzzing Botany Town Centre. The idea behind the firearms display showcasing a number of police and emergency events was to impress on the spectators that replicas and look-alike air weapons are now restricted. It had one of the visitors asking the police officer manning the display: “It’s going to bother me if you don’t tell me which one is the genuine firearm. She almost guessed it right, which had one of the onlookers ask her how

she knew the difference. To which she simply answered: “I’m South African! Other displays included educating people on the equipment and chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine. Also, sharing priceless bits of information about the branded products you cannot bring into the country was New Zealand Customs Service. However, it was the state-of-the art fire engines at the airport, the sophisticated Rosenbauer Panther, that had a crowd around admiring the technological wonder, way after the event had wrapped up. Dave Ewen, Green Watch crew chief at Auckland airport, said the slick fire engine could pump 10,000 litres of water and foam a minute. Everyday Heroes, showcasing a number of police and emergency services, had trigger-happy people shooting hundreds of selfies with police officers on motorbikes, horses and with police dogs.

ESEARCH has found that complacent Kiwis are not following basic steps to prevent burglary. As part of the inaugural Secure Homes Report, ADT Security surveyed 1047 homeowners and renters in metropolitan and regional areas of New Zealand. The research found one in three respondents had been subject to a break-in, with 17 per cent of the intrusions happening while someone was at home. Eleven per cent of those affected by burglary experienced more than one break-in at their current residence. Surprisingly, nearly 10 per cent of break-ins occurred by an unforced window entry, where the window or door had been left ajar or unlocked, highlighting the need for New Zealanders to be more vigilant about securing their home. Ben Clement from ADT Security says the research results indicate that New Zealanders are making it easy for burglars to break into their homes. “One in five leaves home without locking up, 18 per cent go to bed without securing windows and doors and 26 per cent of people hide their spare keys outside for tradespeople, cleaners or family members,” he says. “This level of complacency is concerning.” The security company encourages householders to carry out a security assessment of their property and consider a monitored alarm system to better protect themselves from burglary and other crimes. “A good approach is to think like a thief,” Mr Clement says. “Walk around your property and identify where it is vulnerable. “Once you identify your weak spots you can look at ways of reinforcing them. “It’s important to remember

Home security tips Locks on doors and windows should always be the first line of defence. Don’t leave packaging of new appliances on the footpath in front of your house. If your home has a shed or garage, ensure it is properly secured – not only could items be stolen, but items in the shed or garage can be used to help break into your property. Ensure spare keys aren’t hidden in obvious places. Thieves know to look in mailthat being at home doesn’t mean that you should leave your windows and doors open. “Most break-ins occur when

boxes, under doormats and above doorways for keys. With apartments or multistorey homes, be aware of locking doors and windows, as burglars can scale exterior walls. A monitored home alarm is one of the most effective security measures. It’s possible to isolate certain zones of the home to be monitored, so that alarms can be activated even when the home is occupied. homeowners have presented burglars with an opportunity, like an unlocked window, whether they are home or not,” he says.

Dream garden in eight steps C

REATING the garden of your dreams means either calling in the services of a landscape professional or diving head-first into the project yourself. Landscaping a yard requires a great deal of time, but it is a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Before you get down to work, here is a list of all the necessary steps to follow to turn your dream into reality.

Planning is vital

Check the site for any easements. Take note of hours of full and partial sunshine, undesirable views, which corners to highlight and which to hide. Find out about current council regulations that may affect landscaping. Get the soil analyzed, locate the areas that are exposed to wind, and identify the hardiness zone.

Identify your needs

How will you use the space? Do you want to install a pool or a spa? Do you need space for a children’s playground? Would you like to create a water garden or a dining area; hang a hammock or plant a vegetable garden? Think carefully about all your needs.

Make a plan

Draw a scaled plan of your property, including the house, shed, pathways, driveway, and any trees and shrubs you want to keep. Then add all the elements of your new layout, taking into account the vegetation and structures you wish to include. Don’t be afraid to sketch out a variety of plans; it’s easier to make changes on paper than it is once the work has started.

Choose plants with care

Before buying anything, take the time to make a list of all the plants you

have chosen, including the hours of sunshine they need and the care they require. Be sure to consider the size of the vegetation once it has reached maturity; this is especially important if you want to plant trees and shrubs.

Landscaping is an investment that could increase the value of the property. Don’t hesitate to consult an expert to answer any questions. It is better to spend a few dollars straight away rather than have to redo already completed work.

Stay in control

From the moment your garden starts to take shape, you will have to start maintaining it. No-maintenance gardens are a bit of a myth. Weeding, watering, and pruning can take either a few minutes every day or a few hours once a week. Don’t wait for the work to pile up. Learn to delegate; family members can contribute to yard upkeep, and gardeners can be hired for weeding and for bigger seasonal jobs.

Enjoy it

The last rule is definitely the best – have fun! Make the most of your dream garden and enjoy your favourite pastimes there. You deserve it! And remember a successful landscaping project can increase the value of a property.

Spiced beef with grape slaw

25 WELLINGTON STREET, HOWICK.

Method:

Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

Trivia night ursday April 16 from 7pm. $$$ Pres to be won!

• Âź -½ cabbage, ďŹ nely sliced • 1 capsicum ďŹ nely sliced • 300g seedless grapes, halved • 1 bunch Superb Herb chives, chopped (optional) • 4 Greater Good Mini Carrots, grated • 80 g Edmonds Mayonnaise • 2 tbs balsamic vinegar • 2-3 tsps Masterfoods Moroccan Seasoning • 400g rump steak, cut into strips • 1 Cottage Lane Sourdough Batard • 200g Lisa’s Hummus Also need: olive oil, salt and pepper

Mix cabbage, capsicum, grapes, chives and carrot with mayonnaise and vinegar. Set aside, covered. Put a fry pan on high heat with a little oil. Toss the steak slices in the seasoning. Add the steak to the really hot pan in 2 batches. Cook until medium rare then put aside on a plate. It will cook a bit more while it sits. Cut 8- 12 slices from the batard. Either use a toaster or set the oven to grill and toast the batard slices on both sides. When cooked, spread hummus

generously on each piece of batard. Then top with the steak slices and serve with the slaw. ➤ AND MORE: Make the slaw your own by adding extras like pecans, celery or radishes. To make a lighter dressing, substitute natural yoghurt or buttermilk for the mayonnaise. Buttering the batard before adding the hummus will make it extra tasty. As well as using balsamic vinegar for dressings, add a little to beef dishes for an extra layer of taste.

PERSONAL PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY

(Never known to fail)

O most beautiful flower of Mt Carmel, fruit of the vine, splendorous of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin assist me in this my necessity. O star of the sea, help me and show me herein, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. The prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered.

Great memories to be cherished K

ANE Williamson and Grant Elliott’s match-winning sixes to defeat Australia in pool play and South Africa in a dramatic semi-ďŹ nal ďŹ nal will remain indelible memories from New Zealand’s 2015 World Cup ODI cricket campaign that I will take to the grave. So, I suspect, will many other proud Kiwis who have witnessed the Black Caps rapid rise to fame over the past two summers under the captaincy of the courageous Brendon McCullum. With Martin Guptill the top batsman with 547 runs and Trent Boult (22 wickets) sharing the bowling honours with Australian star Mitchell Starc, this was a world championship to cherish. With Starc’s swing and James Faulkner’s deceptive slow ball dismissing NZ cheaply for 183, Australia

were resounding seven-wicket winners of the Melbourne ďŹ nal before a record 93,013 fans. Only the gallant Elliott, with a deďŹ ant 83, managed to reap a proďŹ t from the relentless Aussie attack as big hitters McCullum, Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi were all skittled for ducks. Asking the fearless McCullum to respect the good balls in ODI and Twenty20 cricket is like asking a leopard to change his spots. He managed it in test cricket when he became the ďŹ rst New Zealander to better 300 in a test innings and score 1000 for the year. But his philosophy in the shorter versions of the game is the Mike Tyson knockout rather than the science of Muhammad Ali. McCullum’s captaincy has been brilliant in setting attacking ďŹ elds

Agnew’s Angle in support of his pace attack led by gifted left-arm swing bowler Boult, supported by Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Anderson and ďŹ nally Matt Henry. Although Southee failed to repeat his brilliance against England he still captured 15 wickets along with wily leg spinner Vettori. It is sad to reect that Vettori’s swansong failed to reap him a world crown after a remarking 18-year international career which has won global acclaim.

His bowling confounded opponents at crucial times and his salmon-like boundary catch against the West Indies was one of the tournament highlights. So, too, was Guptill’s World Cup record 237 in repaying the faith of coach Mike Hesson for staying faithful to him when he was in a slump. By their own standards Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor failed to reap the runs they would have hoped. However, although Taylor was pedestrian at times he stuck around like glue to allow the free owing Guptill and Elliott to prosper. At 36, the same age as Vettori, Elliott is in his pomp and thankfully has no thoughts of retiring. Blessed with a wonderful temperament, he’s a smart man who reads the situation well and plays accordingly.

Although Vettori will be sadly missed, the future looks bright with the team likely to continue to prosper by playing an attractive attacking game under McCullum’s inspired leadership. Never has New Zealand had such medium-fast to fast bowling depth as it has now when one considers the merits of Boult, Southee, Matt Henry, Adam Milne, Mitch McClenaghan, Kyle Mills, Doug Bracewell and Neil Wagner. Hopefully such depth will help overcome the loss of bowling coach Shane Bond who has done a fantastic job in the wake of Alan Donald. A pity, however, that veteran Mills was not named as his replacement. He’s vastly experienced, has an outstanding record and is widely respected.

Youngsters ready to maintain baseball club’s supremacy By DANIEL SILVERTON THE ďŹ nal preparations have been put on Howick Pakuranga’s defence of the national under-13 baseball championship. Howick Pakuranga puts its title on the line at the tournament this Friday to Monday at Rosedale Park, Albany. The 13 best players have been identiďŹ ed from Howick Pakuranga’s two under-13 sides, the Blackhawks and Cardinals. “We’ve selected our top squad from those two teams,â€? says cocoach Mark Irwin.

“We had two trial games between the teams and also took a great deal of interest in some of them over the year. This is the cream of the crop. We expect them to have the basic skills down pat as well as commitment and maturity.â€? In the Auckland competition, the Blackhawks reached the ďŹ nal against unbeaten North Shore, but the decider on Saturday was cancelled due to rain. North Shore were declared the winners based on ďŹ nishing top in the regular season. Irwin is anticipating his side will meet North Shore in the

national ďŹ nal, which would be a repeat of last year, won by Howick Pakuranga 9-8 in the bottom of the last inning. “We have to ride on the coat tails of last year’s achievements,â€? he says. “In the under-13 grade Howick Pakuranga have been dominant in the last couple of nationals. We are deďŹ nitely expecting a ďŹ nal clash. I think with how we’ve competed against North Shore this year, we are a very good chance to topple them.â€? Also in the tournament are Orewa, Bayside, Central City and an under-11 Auckland all-star team.

My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!

Redhawks prevail in tight battle

HOWICK PAKURANGA REDHAWKS

Times photo Daniel Silverton

THE champions of the Auckland premier baseball competition were always going to come from the Howick Pakuranga Hawks club. The club’s two teams in the top grade, the Redhawks and Blackhawks, met in the final on Sunday at Lloyd Elsmore Park. The Redhawks went into the decider unbeaten in 21 matches this season, including three previous wins over the Blackhawks. However, the encounters have been closely fought, with at most two runs separating the teams. As you would expect, the final

was no different. The Blackhawks took the lead in the third inning when Bryce Rouse scored off an error after reaching second base from a hit. The Redhawks thought they had the tying run three times in the sixth inning. With two outs, Dan Tan reached first base with a walk. The next batter, Andrew Marck, had three solid hits which had Tan on his way home, only for the ball to be called foul each time. John Lee drew the Redhawks level in the seventh, with Mikiya Tsukada hitting the RBI.

With the score still tied at 1-1 in the middle of the ninth inning, the Redhawks had one last chance to get the game-winning walk off run. Having pitched nine innings for three hits, 12 strikeouts and no walks or no earned runs, Marck took the plate in the lead-off spot. He singled with a hit up the middle, then advanced to third from hits to Sam Harvey and Tsukada. Now with two outs, and Marck in scoring position, a low pitch got past the Blackhawks catcher and Marck seized the opportunity to steal home and seal the 2-1 win.

Demotion for Howick Pakuranga By Daniel Silverton

P

RIOR to the Black Caps’ defeat in the World Cup on Sunday, last weekend was already one to forget for cricketers in Howick Pakuranga’s premier team. Howick Pakuranga has been relegated from the top tier of Auckland Cricket’s two-day competition, after placing last in the Hedley Howarth Trophy major championship. Their fate was sealed with a 109run loss to Papatoetoe in the final round at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday, putting them into the Tom Hellaby minor championship next season. “We’re disappointed, says coach

Hayden Gardner. “We put a lot of hard work in and it didn’t quite go our way. “We had a bit of bad luck through the season, but you make your own luck. It didn’t fall our way at key moments of the season. Howick Pakuranga finished with a two-win, eight-loss record in the two-dayers. “We were in a position to come away with the win in most of the games, says Gardner. “There were a few half-hour periods that cost us. It all added up at the end of the year. Papatoetoe, second last before the final round, had posted an imposing total of 399 on the first day,

you lose guys of that calibre and are trying to replace them. We have to build more depth and will look at a recruitment strategy if we feel we need to fill more holes in the side. Howick Pakuranga hasn’t been in the minor championship since 2006/07, the first season the division was split. The proud club won promotion the same year. “We have some good young players coming through, says Gardner. “We had a host of 17- and 18-year-olds playing for the premiers this season and half the side is yet to turn 21. “We’ll keep working with our boys over the winter and try to rediscover that winning form so we can carry that through to next season.
