Hit, run driver found By NICK KRAUSE

P

olice have caught up with a driver accused of the hit and run of a toddler on Baverstock Road, Flat Bush. Police are speaking to a 23-yearold male in relation to the incident. A family is counting its blessings after their children narrowly escaped death trying to cross the road near Baverstock Oaks School. Mum Mandeep Kaur was walking her four-year-old son and nephew to kindergarten at around 8am on August 18. The Times could not locate her for further comment by deadline. Police said as she crossed Baver-

stock Road she noticed a white sedan vehicle travelling towards her “at a fast speed”. She acted quickly to pull both children back, however as she lifted her son, the vehicle hit his right leg which was broken in the incident. The vehicle did not stop and continued driving. CCTV footage was obtained however the vehicle’s registration number was not visible.

The cousins, on their way to preschool on the same campus as Baverstock Oaks School, and heavily pregnant mother Mandeep were “inches from death”, media reported. Now a school parent and the principal are making another plea to Auckland Council to put a pedestrian crossing or judder bars in place. Principal Mary Wilson told the Times the school uses kea cross-

ings which, according to the NZ Transport Agency website, only operate when a school patrol and two fluorescent orange crossing point flag signs (one on each side of the road) are present. “We’ve asked council for years why we can’t have a zebra crossing,” Mrs Wilson said. “They argue (that) if the (kea) crossing was turned into a zebra crossing, that people then assume they can step onto the road and cars will stop.” NZTA’s website says in general, pedestrian crossings are safe places to cross the road. “However, there’s a potential danger with pedestrian crossings that aren’t used very often. ➤ Turn to Page 5

hey are representative of the growing diversity in east Auckland, especially the Botany and Ormiston area. Baljit Kaur, Mark Johnson and Gyanandra Kumar are candidates from the Labour party standing for the Howick Local Board, Botany subdivision. They say they are raring to do the hard yards and fill in the gaps of accountability, accessibility and transparency left by the current members of the Howick Local Board. Ms Kaur, Flat Bush resident and chair of Labour Botany, believes change is inevitable. “It’s also very exciting,” says the medical underwriter for Southern Cross. Having also worked for aged care facilities in Australia and New Zealand, she says she is keen to give back to the community and bring cultural diversity to the local board. Chairperson of the New Zealand Sikh Women’s Association and a member of the board of Life’s Charitable Trust NZ, Ms Kaur works with vulnerable women and children.“I am also passionate about help-

ing and looking after our senior citizens,” she says. Ms Kaur believes that not much has been done in the Botany/Flat Bush area in terms of community development. “Honestly, I haven’t seen any of the Howick Local Board members reach out to the people in our area. There is no visibility or accessibility. Nor have I seen anything in my mailbox. Where are they?” she asks. Botany Labour Party candidates are busy planning their campaign launch at China Town on Saturday.

It is an opportunity for people to meet the candidates, hear out their policies, ask questions and enjoy cultural performances. Mayoral candidate Phil Goff will be guest of honour. The Labour candidates say they are more than happy to do the good old fashioned door knocking to reach out to people. Botany resident Mark Johnson is a former Botany Downs Secondary College teacher. “I think people will be delighted considering they have been given a choice of candidates for the

very first time,” he says. “There has been no voice for the left wing for so long on the local board. Everyone knows what the Labour Party stands for.” Committed to the development of inclusive communities, the young publisher says: “I can’t think of one public space in this area dedicated to young residents and their families. We need a community centre, a common area for the people to gather and meet.” He adds: “The people currently on the local board may be good human beings

but I truly don’t know what they have done in terms of encouraging and building facilities. We deserve a much better bus service than we currently have in east Auckland and I will lobby for proactive progress.” Health and protection/ technical officer with Auckland Regional Public Health services, Gyanandra Kumar, believes that with years of experience on the District Health Board, he has been privy to how the Auckland Council and the District Health Board operate. “I can see the remedial measures and can implement them if given the chance,” says the former policeman from Fiji. “Unfortunately, there has been very less communication between the community members and the councillors. With a huge development of population in the Ormistion area, there are so many issues that no one has paid any heed to.” Talking about a road safety issue that has rankled him, he says: “Look at the narrow bridge that connects Chapel Road to Ormiston Road. There have been heaps of accidents there.”

Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking

Campaign

What do you want to know? W

ith just over three weeks left until your voting papers start arriving in the post, it’s time to start thinking and talking about local body elections. We believe you – our readers – should drive this debate. It’s your community and your vote and so you should have the opportunity to ask the questions you want answered and raise the concerns you want addressed. We will provide the platform for you to do so. What do you think are the most important issues in your neighbourhood? What do you want the Howick Local Board and our two Auckland councillors to improve on this term? What questions do you want the candidates to answer? We will publish your questions, concerns and answers – both in print and online – for all to see. Perhaps more importantly, we will also put them to the candidates themselves, forcing them to move away from comfortable political slogans and meaningless rhetoric and towards actual answers and solutions for their constituents. The whole idea is to get our community invested in the fastapproaching local body elections, and to get us thinking and debating about whom to vote for. We want to encourage and motivate people to not only vote, but to think seriously about which box to tick.

why you should vote for them. But now it’s your turn to be heard.

In the 2013 Local Body Elections, according to the Department of Internal Affairs, the overall voter turnout for the Botany subdivision of the Howick Local Board was just 34.1 percent. Howick was slightly better at 39.6 per cent and Pakuranga had a 37.3 per cent voter turnout. Meanwhile, Auckland had one of the worst voter turnouts in the country – 35.5 per cent. In 2010, the year of the SuperCity amalgamation, Auckland’s voter turnout was 51 per cent.

We believe the voter turnout should be increasing, not getting worse, and in 2016 there are plenty of candidates to vote for. Howick is the third most-contested ward in Auckland, with 10 candidates running for two positions on Auckland Council. In 2013, Howick’s two Auckland councillors were re-elected unopposed. When it comes to the Howick Local Board in 2016, the Botany subdivision and Howick subdivision are in the top 10 most-

contested local board seats in Auckland, proportionally. They both have nine candidates running for three positions. Pakuranga has eight people running for three positions. Over the past five weeks, our editorial team has started introducing these candidates to you and we will continue to do so in the coming weeks. These introductions give each candidate a chance to talk about what’s important to them and allows them to make a case for

Restaurateur jailed for tax evasion An Auckland restaurateur has been sentenced to three years and two months in jail after evading $787,996 in tax. Zai Jian Liang ran the Tasty Zone Restaurant in East Tamaki and filed 113 incorrect tax returns between 2009 and 2015. An Inland Revenue investigation revealed he and his wife Guan Hong Liang

avoided paying GST by failing to declare over $1 million in cash sales and almost $500,000 in PAYE. Their rort extended to also fraudulently claiming $30,000 in Working for Families tax credits. Investigations and advice group manager Tony Morris said the Liangs showed a complete disregard toward

their tax obligations. “This is right up there with the most blatant cases we have seen,” Mr Morris said. “This couple have actively hidden significant amounts of cash sales and employee wages from Tasty Zone’s tax returns. Mrs Liang was convicted and discharged in the Manukau District Court on

lesser knowledge offences. Since the Liangs are in the process of being bankrupted, no reparation order was made. “New Zealanders need to know that we will track down people like the Liangs and hold them to account. We won’t let them get away with ripping off honest, law-abiding taxpayers.”

Donald seeks third board term By SCOTT YEOMAN

J

im Donald is a familiar name in Howick. The 70-year-old has had a seat on the Howick Local Board, representing the Howick subdivision, for six years. Now he’s running for a third term as an independent candidate and told the Times last week that he’s “definitely not done”. “I have a sense of wisdom, I’ve been around,” Mr Donald (pictured) said. “I’ve seen the games that some bureaucrats play and I’ve caught them out at telling lies.” Political games are a major concern for the former community constable and police dog handler, who will tell you time and time again that he’s “practical not political”. “I’m concerned that national politics are getting involved in local governance.” Mr Donald said the issues in Howick are different to those in Pakuranga and Botany, different to the issues in Mangere and Otara. “I’m concerned that some of the

decisions are going to be made in portfolio meetings rather than open debating meetings,” he said, suggesting members of the board might decide to vote together as a party before the debating stage. Mr Donald said “power and control” are alive in local politics and that he has had enough of it. “The caucuses of the National Party and Labour Party are influencing the decisions in the community.” Which brings him to his next concern - he has a few. “I’m concerned about people [candidates] who have got two jobs.” Mr Donald, who is retired, said being a member of the local board is a big role and deserves a lot of time and effort. “We’re looking after a population greater than Dunedin and there are nine of us doing what 15 used to do in the previous administration. “I don’t have any other employment. So I can commit myself. Other people who are standing have got other employment.” Mr Donald is the Howick town crier and has been for three years.

“I’m passionate about this community and I’ve still got energy.” Jim Donald

Times photo Scott Yeoman

He can often been seen waving his bell about on a Saturday morning in the village. “To me, Howick is the best place to live and Howick village is a centre for our community,” he said. “I’m determined to make sure that we retain that.” The character and heritage of

the village is important to him. He gets involved in the hanging of flower pots on the main street, he said, as well as the raising of the flags. And one of his big focuses this term, if re-elected, is fighting to protect the view shafts from Stockade Hill – currently at risk from the Auckland Unitary Plan.

Mr Donald said the limitations of the Howick Local Board and its complicated relationship with Auckland Council also need to be addressed. “I think at present the local board is divorcing itself from the community. “We have Auckland Council making big decisions and we seem to be piggy in the middle.” He said one way to improve this is the board and Howick’s two Auckland councillors working together more closely this term. But Mr Donald is adamant his approach to local politics will not change. “I get sick and tired of the hui hui – all this talk, talk, talk. Nothing gets done.” He will be sticking with his “practical not political” style, he said. “I’m prepared to do the work. I’m consistently doing the best I can for this community. I’m passionate about this community and I’ve still got energy.” He wants to make a difference. “I’m not going to be here forever.”

“Motorists who regularly drive through these crossings know pedestrians seldom use them. When a pedestrian expects they can safely step out onto such a pedestrian crossing, and a motorist assumes no one will be using the crossing, a crash is more likely to happen.” Baverstock Road is not NZTAcontrolled. As an alternative, Mrs Wilson said she will appeal to parents in the school newsletter to start lobbying council for a judder bar either side of the kea crossing. Parent Shanell Rickard-Simms said she will never let her chil-

until she receives an assurance changes will be made. “I told them I would follow up

every day until something happened,” she said. “There are over 800 students attending that school and the council have refused to put in place a safe place for students to cross safely. “The amount of near misses is shocking. Children actually have to step out onto the road to see if anything is coming. Does a child’s life have to be taken for something to be done?” Counties Manukau Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell said the incident left the mother and children very shaken. “Failing to stop and render assistance following a vehicle

crash is a criminal offence,” he said. “The fact that this person did not stop to see if the child was okay is appalling.” Enquiries are continuing. The vehicle involved is distinctive with tinted windows with a rounded quarter light and black mag wheels. It is similar to a Honda Civic saloon sedan 2006-2011 model. ■ Anyone with further information can contact Senior Sergeant Chappell on 261-1300. Howick Ltd in Vincent Street was a finalist in the American Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand DHL Express Success and Innovation Awards and one of four companies to receive a highly commended certificate. Finalists this year were some of the strongest AmCham has seen in the last 17 years so the judges decided to award the certificates. the USA was part of the reason to enter the awards,” Nick says, “to show how well we are doing in America.” The 35-year-old family company is a design and manufacturing business specialising in automated roll forming machines which process light gauge steel components for the residential and commercial markets. Its largest New Zealand customer is the Golden Homes house building business which runs nine of Howick Ltd’s machines. “The award helps to raise our profile locally – we have about 29 machines operating throughout New Zealand, but also in the USA,” Nick says. Next week Howick Ltd will celebrate the manufacture of its 300th machine and will launch a new control system.

Cockle Bay author Ruth Hammond is thrilled to have been recognised among iconic authors, such as Joy Cowley, by the Christian Booksellers Association. Her book, soft whispers... small shouts...deep waters... was accepted by the association for promotion at its annual convention last week after she was among a group of authors invited to promote their books. She subsequently won a certificate for the book’s display at the convention. “The event was to give new authors an opportunity to submit their work for display and mine was accepted which was lovely, when they were also promoting famous people. I was delighted,” she says. As a result, her book is now being promoted in Christian book shops with a leaflet produced from the convention. Mrs Cowley’s book is available

Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking

Pitching for a place at the council table By Marianne Kelly

D

avid Hay is hanging his hat on inside information – knowledge about how local government works that is – in his pitch for a councillor seat representing Howick Ward in the upcoming Auckland Council election. He doesn’t live in the southeast but worked for a period as a senior policy analyst on the former Manukau City Council strategy and policy team and then as principal policy analyst at the Auckland Council’s Social Policy Unit. “We looked after the MCC ‘Tomorrow’s Manukau’ programme and, until the Super City was formed, were working on ‘Towards 2060’ which was focused on sustainability,” he says. “I spent some time in Howick, Pakuranga and Botany at that time and I know the Ward’s background and history well,” he says. He’s also standing for the mayoralty but, if not elected, says he’s prepared to do two terms as a councillor before taking another shot at the mayoralty. “When I was looking at which Ward I would stand in I saw that councillors were returned unopposed last time in two wards which I don’t

think was very democratic,” he says. “Orakei and Howick caught my eye. “I don’t think the current Howick councillors are showing the energy that Howick needs. I can offer policy making experience and knowledge of how a council works.” One of his mayoralty platforms is for a carbon neutral 2060 and the next phase, he says, will be transport issues. “I’m hanging my hat on a rapid transport network, light and heavy rail. “I seriously think that the next priority has to be AMETI [Auckland Manukau Eastern

Fresh NZ Pork Shoulder Roast

Transport Initiative] – light rail from Panmure to Howick. “Rail needs to go all the way to the village. This is also part of making Auckland more sustainable and less dependent on fossil fuels. “I get a lot of feedback from Auckland university students about the commute times from the eastern suburbs. It’s tragic. I know of one Howick student who has to leave the house at 6am to get to an 8.30am lecture at AUT. That’s terrible.” He thinks that “knowing how the machine works” will be valuable in situations Howick Ward recently found itself in. Proposals for intensification around Stockade Hill in the Auckland Unitary Plan were accepted by councillors at hearings to decide on the Independent Hearings Panel recommendations on the plan. He points to the council’s vote to reject a recommendation that would have allowed more than 750 houses to be built near Okura. It would have involved moving the rural-urban boundary, north of Auckland, from the Vaughans Road ridgeline to meet the Okura Estuary. “You have to be on the ball with issues like the view shafts at Stockade Hill,” he says.

An important fundraiser C

ancer Society’s annual flagship event Daffodil Day – one of the most important fundraising and cancer awareness events – falls this year on Friday, 26 August New Zealand wide. Now in its 26th year, Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for Cancer Society. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and with its bright yellow bloom represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year. Donations received will go towards vital research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer as well as providing a range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancers. More recently, Cancer Society has advocated heavily for Pharmac to fund melanoma drugs Opdivo and its alternative Keytruda. There has been positive progress made in the last twelve months around cancer care in New Zealand. “We have made huge strides over the past year with the generous donations from caring individuals. We want to continue to advocate and provide quality care for cancer patients and their whanau in New Zealand - and we are confident Daffodil Day will allow us to do that,” said John Loof, Cancer Society Auckland Northland chief

executive. “There is still a lot of inequity in New Zealand for those with cancer. Transport support options are different and often unfair depending on where you live in New Zealand. On top of this, it’s difficult to get financial support if you can’t work because of cancer and this should be a priority for the government. We help those who fall through the cracks and advocate for fairness for all patients. We thank those who donate to allow us to provide this support,” said Loof. ■■ People wanting to progress research and support those affected by cancer can do so by donating directly on Daffodil Day with a street collector, at any ANZ branch, by texting 469 to instantly donate $3, or online at daffodilday.org.nz.

Feedback For want of independence

I refer to your article H&P Times, August 4, entitled “Opting for the team approach” which announced John Spiller’s intention to run in this year’s local body elections with the Vision and Voice team. Unfortunately (for the greater Howick) this announcement followed a similar release by Bob Wichman that he is also running with the same team ticket. Howick residents need to ask themselves, is it good for our community to have a significant number of potential board candidates standing under the one political banner ? Vision and Voice candidates put forward the notion that in the last term the Howick Board worked cohesively with a Vision and Voice majority. I would argue that cohesiveness forged by an overwhelming majority does not necessarily drive the best outcomes for Howick. Thankfully, we have a strong line up of independents who do

Tree men have no ID

There are men around the community who have made themselves business cards and claim they are arborists, but they have no identification to prove they are who they say they are. The names they go under are Paul, Pula, Vai, and MK (no actual name there). I took their business cards to remind myself who they are. They go under the name of A&T Tree Troopers Ltd and the first one had a different name (I misplaced the first card). I was fortunate that I was inside and able to answer the door. I would suggest that if you are outside and have a cell phone, carry it with you so that you can call the police if they don’t go away when you ask them to. I

took a business card and said I’d contact them with hopes of never seeing them again. If you want an arborist, don’t let them do it. With no identification, there’s no guarantee that they are police-checked. AP, Pakuranga

Target WoF offenders

Re ‘My Parking Fury’ (Howick Pakuranga Times, August 18). What is more dangerous? A car that has over-parked its time by 10 minutes, an out of date mobility card, or a car with expired registration. In my view it is the unregistered car because without a WOF you cannot register your car and if the car has no WOF there is likely to be something wrong with it that makes it hazardous. So in the interests of safety the parking wardens should be targeting cars without WOFs and/ or registrations. However to do this they need to patrol the streets and not just spend their days chalking tyres in

cars parks. They say that Auckland is a big city but there are also a lot car parks so the wardens could conceivably patrol the areas around the car parks which they seem to be based at. If they did that then their time spent would be of some valve – not just revenue collecting. Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

Park in your driveway people! Reading lately about cars crashing on an island (Times, August 4), this is down to driver error. I feel a more pressing issue is cars parked on the side of the road. My own street, a cul-de-sac, always has cars parked on the street to the point that if two cars are going the opposite way, one has to give way. It’s hard to see to get out of your driveway then you can’t back too far as cars are parked opposite. I drive daily down Marriott Ave where there are always cars parked on both sides of the road and most times have to drive on

the wrong side of the road for most of the street. Lately there have cars with no plates from a dealer, and there are always a security company’s cars. So many of these cars, including the ones in my street, have driveways and/or garages but won’t use them. I am waiting for a crash to occur in Riverhills opposite Rotoiti Ave where a large van is always parked right on the brow of the hill as cars turn right into Rotoiti. It’s very hard to see. The house it is outside has a huge empty driveway. We have had cars parked facing the wrong way, across drives, on grass verges, even in the centre of the road at the rounded end. It is impossible to turn owing to parked cars. People have no consideration for anyone and pose a danger. I have lost count of the times I have avoided a head on in a residential street. Unfortunately there are too many cars in Auckland. Helen Jonston, Pakuranga

Peter Howie of Beachlands has been elected and installed as Master at Lodge Howick. A retired electronics engineer, Mr Howie has been a member of the local Lodge for 28 years and Master previously 10 years ago. The role is traditionally a one year appointment. The meeting, always the highpoint of the Lodge Masonic year, attracted many visitors from Lodges all over Auckland including well-known Past Grand Master of New Zealand David Mace and prominent Auckland lawyer, Mark Winger, who will become the country’s principal Freemason when installed as Grand Master later this year in Wellington. Mr Howie, who is also the Lodge organist, says he is looking forward to leading the Lodge over the next 12 months, not only maintaining the ageold ritual ceremonies of membership but introducing a programme of social activities for the enjoyment of both members and their wives, partners and families. He says membership enquiries are currently very positive. ‘Right now we are wary of a backlog that could have new candidates experiencing some delays’. Lodge Howick has a strong record of charitable work, a passionate feature of Freemasonry. In recent times support has been provided to many local community causes including Howick Coastguard, Eastgate Trust for disabled adults, Blind Foundation; Guide Dogs and daisy players (portable, easy to navigate reading devices), Assistance Guide Dogs, Stand children’s (health) camp, and Howick Historical Village

Unemployment down – Kiwis returning home W

e received good economic news this last week. Statistics New Zealand reported that the official unemployment rate has dropped to 5.1 per cent in the June Quarter, down from 5.5 per cent a year earlier. In Auckland our unemployment rate is 4.7 per cent – the lowest since September 2008. What it all means is that 105,000 extra jobs have been created in our economy in the last year and 251,000 extra jobs have been created in the last three years. The average annual wage has also risen about 25 per cent to over $58,000 since 2008 – more than double the 11.9 per cent rate of inflation over

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany the same period. We are fortunate to be one of the fastest growing economies in the developed world which is drawing people to visit and migrate here. We are also attracting thousands of New Zealanders to return home to live. This migration is a sign of success, even if not always popular when in the headlines. Skilled migrants are fulfilling roles on the skills shortage lists, international students are coming to study at our esteemed academic

institutions, people are moving to invest their money here and New Zealanders are coming home. Instead of 35,000 Kiwis leaving every year to go to Australia, they are either staying home or returning as they see great prospects and bright futures within our thriving economy. But while migration is a sign of success, it also has its challenges. New Zealanders returning home is a big part of why demand for housing in Auckland has been outstripping supply for many years. We need to accommodate this growth by building more houses. The new Auckland Unitary Plan is set to pro-

vide 422,000 new dwellings in Auckland. This is very good news because, for so long, land supply constraints imposed by local government units in Auckland have been part of the problem, not the solution. The Unitary Plan will achieve a much needed boost to supply. The hard work required now is ramping up on building activity. New housing is needed in Auckland as we continue to see our improving economic circumstances leading to more New Zealanders choosing to return home, and the next generation realising their future lies right here. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Rotary team back after Fijian rebuild A group of six from the Rotary Club of Pakuranga has just returned from rebuilding a cyclone damaged teachers’ house in Fiji. The team spent 10 days on Taveuni Island helping to build the house at the Niusawa High School. The house was severely damaged when Cyclone

Winston struck the island last February and damaged 5000 buildings. Three container loads of building materials, donated by many Rotary Clubs throughout New Zealand, had already arrived on the island to be used for the rebuilding process. The Rotary effort is concentrated on schools

and their supporting buildings, as the Fijian Government is in the process of rebuilding only private dwellings for the locals at this stage. The Pakuranga team worked with local builders and a group of community workers, allowing the local community to take ownership of the new

building. Pakuranga Rotary previously built five pre-school classrooms on Taveuni. Testament to the quality work done, all the buildings survived the cyclone and were used as shelters by the locals when the storm hit. Rebuilding in Taveuni is expected to continue for many years.

keeping audiences swinging and dancing for more than 40 years. Rodger Fox says the audience can expect an exciting and spontaneous mix of music. “It’s more like a jazz gig than a traditional classical concert,” he says. “The order of works will be decided spontaneously on the night, depending on the mood in the concert hall. It’s definitely going to keep you on the edge of your seat.” Joining the band is US trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti while New Zealander Hamish McKeich will conduct the 12 concerts on the New Zealand tour. ■■ The NZSO and Rodger Fox Big Band will perform their ‘Spring into Spring’ concert at 7pm on September 9 at the Auckland Town Hall, Queen Street, Central Auckland.

A playcentre fundraiser will feature a nutritionist who not only helps clients with knowledge about nutrition but also concentrates on how they can practically fit this advice into their lifestyles. An evening with Wal Herring entitled Healthy Little Eaters will provide audience members with foundations of how we, as parents, grandparents and caregivers can help our children develop a healthy relationship with food. With foundations set, children will not only enjoy the benefits of eating healthier now but they will also reap the rewards of carrying these choices and habits with them into their teens and adulthood. This event is in support of Bucklands Beach Ohui a Rangi Playcentre and is very topical given the diabetes/ obesity/health crisis facing our children and the wider society, says Rachel Ruddick, the playcentre’s secretary. “Wal Herring has a Master of Science in Nutrition and 15 years of practical experience in the field,” she says. “She has three children and is always striving to grow herself and her knowledge.” ■■ Healthy Little Eaters, Monday September 12. 7.30pm, Te Tuhi, 13 Reeves Rd. Arts Excellence Awards are awarded annually by regional committees in Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland, Taranaki and the Waikato.

In order to serve `time-poor’ clients better, owner Kraiya Archvarin has introduced a QR code that you can scan with your smart phone and order food online. You can either visit their user friendly website www.theelephant. co.nz that displays an array of photographs of mouth-watering dishes, starting with tongue-tingling entrees that make you want to eat them instantaneously, or then scan their QR code which has been reproduced here. “It makes it easy to make the online payment and also mention the time you want the food ready by,” says Kraiya who wants to ensure that the food is hot and ready to be collected by the customer. “This makes it easier for someone who is returning from work and wants a takeaway. They can quickly drop by to collect the food without the hassle of having to wait for their order or to make a payment,” she says. “It also gives the clients a chance to visually see the dishes instead of

The rafters of the Uxbridge Presbyterian Church will ring again with music and laughter as the long-awaited upgrade of the old building is celebrated with a two-week festival. Renovation of the church is part of stage two of the $6.4 million redevelopment of the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre in Uxbridge Road, Howick. Stage one, including a cafe, administration offices, lounge, studios, courtyard and the state-ofthe-art Malcolm Smith Gallery was opened in June. The design encompasses direct access through double doors from the new centre into the upgraded theatre which has retained the best of the original church features. The refurbished space will have fixed theatre seating and some on the flat designed for cabaret events, a new lighting and sound system and a larger cinema screen. It seats just over 200 people The festival will start with a cabaret night on October 7 showcasing music, dance and a few surprising spectacular acts, hosted by Pakuranga comedian, ‘Indian Guy’ Tarun

into the ground and use a built-in solar panel to charge their batteries during the day, before being activated by a light-sensor once night falls. ■■ Solar security lights are mounted on a wall and are designed to illuminate entranceways. They generally include a motion sensor, and a separate solar panel connected to the light via a long cable so the panel can be mounted where it will be exposed to the most sun, for example, on a garage

roof. They aren’t as bright as wired-in security sensor lights, but they can be a good option to avoid the expense of running electricity to areas remote from the house mains supply. ■■ 12V garden lights are powered from a transformer which plugs into a mains socket, and reduces the mains voltage from 230V to 12V. Using low voltage means the cables don’t need to be buried, as they don’t pose an electrocution risk if accidentally severed. ■■ Mains sensor security lights are the traditional motionsensing outdoor lights, and often come as twin lamps allowing you to illuminate large outdoor areas. They’re invariably brighter than solar security lights, but they need to be installed by an electrician and can be extremely expensive to install if you need to run new wiring to the site of the light.

Landscape lighting tips

Jenny Pullar, one of New Zealand’s leading landscape lighting designers, says the key thing to remember is that light travels in straight lines, and won’t have any effect until it hits a solid surface (which may be your eyeball, causing glare). She recommends using a surface mount for garden lights rather than staking them in the ground, which can result in lots of light flying off into the ether instead of illuminating the path as intended. “The first thing I’d do is see if there’s a fence or anything up high so that I could shine light down. But stake-in lights can be a good option if there’s no high surfaces available for mounting,” she says. Her design process starts

with a walk around the garden at night with some sample lights to see which fixture locations and beam directions are most effective. She recommends playing around with a torch or single garden light to see what’s going to work before buying a range of expensive lights. She also emphasises the importance of light colour, which ranges from the warm yellow light emitted by old incandescent bulbs, to the cool white typical of office lighting. In contrast with indoor living areas where a warmer light colour is preferred, the best option outdoors is cool light, she says. “It looks more like moonlight. Warm [yellow] light draws attention to earthy tones like bark and dirt, while cooler colour temperatures bring out vibrant colours like green lichen or the red of a Pohutukawa tree.” Most outdoor lights come with bulbs/LEDs with a cool colour temperature. But when buying replacement bulbs Jenny recommends checking the colour temperature – measured in Kelvin (K). Cool white light is 4000K while warm white is 2700K-3000K. She recommends spending a bit more to avoid problems later. “If you want it to be working in 10 years’ time you’ve got to pay real money for it.” She mostly uses copper fittings, occasionally complementing them with stainless steel for a more modern look. “But I stay well away from powder-coated [metal] products, which are never a good option in the salty air of coastal New Zealand.”

olar-powered gardening lights might be easy to install – you just stick them in the ground – and cost nothing to run. But Consumer NZ’s test of 25 outdoor lights found the cheapest ones only put out pitiful amounts of light. Seven solar garden lights were included in the test. Those that cost $6 each or less offered no more than a dim glow. Most of them only just met the Building Code requirement for emergency exits. That’s not enough to highlight steps, changes in height or other tripping hazards, so they’re not a safe option. They only worked for a few hours after dusk. However, the more expensive Duracell solar garden lights were much better performers, the path lights a good option for keeping dark, winding paths illuminated into the wee small hours, the spot lights great for highlighting individual objects. However, Consumer says, they cost more than $20 each, so lighting a big garden is an expensive proposition and they will need replacing after a couple of years once their rechargeable battery fails. While 12V lights were generally more expensive and require buying a transformer and stringing cables through the garden, they had better light output and offered a longer-lasting solution than solar lights. For security lights, mainpowered lights were four times brighter than solar lights on average. However, Consumer says solar security lights are worth looking at if home owners want to avoid expensive electrical installation and aren’t trying to illuminate a large area.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, August 25, 2016 — 21

Trades talent needed This week a special campaign has been underway to raise awareness of careers that exist in 140 trades and services in New Zealand. It has been celebrating the talents and achievements of Kiwi apprentices making headway in their vocation, and put a focus on the future demand expected for skilled workers across all trades and services. ‘Got a trade’ week chair Andrew Robertson says New Zealand’s skills shortage is real and needs to be urgently addressed if the economy is to keep buoyant into the future. Dominating the list of new people needed by 2020 is the building and construction industry at 64,000 people. “Only 28 per cent of school leavers go to university,” Mr Robertson says. “The week is about showcasing the opportunities that exist out there for the other 72 per cent. “Trades and services typically refer to jobs that require practical skills and on-the-job training. This includes everything from construction, engineering and transport to hairdressing, hospitality, aged care workers and retail. There are hundreds of roles to choose from and long-term career prospects for young people who are keen to work and willing to learn.” ‘Got a trade week’ was organised by the country’s industry training

organisations representing more than 140 trades and services. Meanwhile a Howick College building team is among 19 schools across the country who have spent the past two months designing, building and decorating playhouses in the annual secondary school BuildAbility Challenge. The challenge is part of the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation’s (BCITO) strategy to meet the growing need for apprentices. BCITO currently has a record 10,000 apprentices in training, but still needs more if New Zealand is to keep up with the demand for housing. Judges will choose the supreme winners who will receive a $1000 voucher for their school’s technology department, with additional prizes for the best video entry and best decorated playhouse. The winners will be announced on September 12. ■■ The People’s Choice winner will be selected by the public by voting at www.buildability. co.nz. More information is online at buildability.co.nz or bcito.org.nz. ■■ A Jalcon Homes house at Pine Harbour is among 100 of the best builds in New Zealand named as National Gold Reserve Finalists in the Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year. National winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on November 26.

ENTERTAINING: A home bar can fit tastes and budgets.

Home bars revived C

ocktails are back in a big way, leading many to outfit their homes with stylish, yet functional, bars. Regardless of whether it’s in a living room, basement or even a garage, a bar will be the focal point of any social gathering. There’s no need to go overboard. A home bar that fits tastes and budget will get the job done when entertaining friends and family.

Bar basics

At the very least, a bar should have a countertop to serve drinks on as well as a few stools for seating. It’s also handy to have shelves

to house bottles of liquor and glassware, as well as drawers for tools. You’ll need to choose between having a wet (sink) or dry bar (no sink). Having a sink is practical for washing glasses. But it also means installing a bar near a waterline. A small refrigerator is a definite must-have. Outfitting a bar with a minifridge allows for keeping a variety of useful items on hand, such as juices, soft drinks, beer and other bottled beverages.

The right setting

Figuring out where you want to spend most of your time enter-

Professional creative landscaping services

taining is one step towards determining the bar’s location. Its size, shape and functionality will also play a role in deciding where it will go. Ideally it should be placed on an empty wall away from foot traffic so it’s not in the way. Being close to a kitchen is practical if the bar lacks a fridge or a sink. However, the basement or garage may be a better option for a large and ornate bar. If space is an issue, a quaint bar cart could be the answer. The perfect solution for small spaces, these versatile little carts create a dedicated area for mixing drinks in virtually any room of the house.

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

or me the lasting memory of the 2016 Rio Olympics will not be the brilliance of a Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps but the spontaneous reaction of 19-year-old New Zealand pole vaulter Eliza McCartney in achieving a third placed bronze medal. Sure, there were greater success stories, including the golds won by Kiwi kayaker Lisa Carrington, rowing single sculler Mahe Drysdale, coxless pair Hamish Bond and Eric Murray and 49er sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. But none reacted with anything like the spontaneous joy of Eliza in her Rio Wonderland. That joy and beaming smile remained with the delightful giggling teenager throughout her event and, one suspects, for many days after. Significantly during the competition she also remained totally focused, at one stage actually leading the field when she was the only one to clear 4.80m with an unblemished record. Sadly she failed to follow two opponents over 4.85m although she went very close with the last of her three attempts. But in missing gold she still won the heart of her nation. brought both tears of joy and sorrow as athletes struggled to overcome nerves to produce their best when it counted most. The Kiwi gold medallists were magnificent. Burling and Tuke were as dominant in their event since their silver at the 2012 London Olympics as the invincible Bond and Murray have been over the past eight years. In repeating her gold in London over 200m, Carrington added a bronze in the 500m and is young enough to be chasing gold again in Tokyo in 2020. Like McCartney and humble silver medallist golfer Lydia Ko, she too is a delight. But for two disqualifications, women 49er sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie would have repeated their 2012 gold. That they managed silver illustrated their class. A New Zealand record 18 medals – four gold, nine silver and five bronze – was an excellent return, 11 of them by women athletes, though more

Abby and Kylah will go to Howick College next year and hope to play for the school’s women’s sevens team. Their parents are right behind them. Jenny Lockhart thinks it’s great that the girls have stuck with it, despite the challenges they’ve faced along the way. “They’ve both grown with the game,” she said. Nigel Olliver said Kylah and Abby were the first girls to go this far at Pakuranga. Usually girls stop playing junior rugby when tackling is introduced. “When they first started, you didn’t really know...where you could go, how far you could take this,” Mr Olliver said. “As time progressed, and they were getting older, it [meant] asking the club how long the girls could keep playing for, because they were playing with the boys, and nobody could really answer it. It was a precedent that hadn’t been set yet.” The girls trialled to get into their teams, he said, meaning they have been picked on merit. Mr Olliver said he hopes this opens up opportunities for other young girls who want to play rugby at the club. Both Kylah and Abby, meanwhile, said they would also like to promote girls’ rugby and would like to see more of it. As they move on to high school next year, their time playing for Pakuranga United is almost over. But you get the feeling these two barrier-breakers are not done and might just be back in the green and orange someday soon.

Cheika was named 2015 International Rugby Coach of the Year despite the All Blacks winning the World Cup. With Sam Cane doing a splendid job in unison with Kieran Read and rugged Jerome Kaino, the All Black loosies dominated although David Pocock still managed to poach possession at several breakdowns. With Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock and Reid commanding the lineout, the passing skills of the forwards was absolutely outstanding in moving the ball into space. Relishing the slick service from Aaron Smith, brilliant Beauden Barrett scored one try and set up two more while the midfield pairing of Ryan Crotty and Malakai Fekitoa enjoyed their best test. Forced to play 78 minutes after Codie Taylor’s concussion, gutsy Dane Cole’s ribs must have felt almost as painful as the loss was to Australian pride. My only grouch is I still think Ben Smith is our best fullback. However he looks likely to remain on the right wing following a hamstring injury to Waisake Naholo. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Abby, Kylah break rugby barriers By Scott Yeoman Abby Lockhart and Kylah Olliver have been breaking tackles and any other barriers that get in their way in a sport dominated by boys for a few years now. The two 12-year-old rugby players, year eight students at Somerville Intermediate, are far from concerned that they are the only girls in their teams. “It’s fine, it doesn’t stop me from doing anything,” said Abby, who plays for Pakuranga United’s U12 Green side.

Kylah, a member of the club’s U13 Green team, agreed. “I’ve kind of gotten used to it from it happening so often,” she said. “When it first started it just seemed a little weird. Not that new now.” They have both been playing rugby for about seven years. “It’s a great game,” said Abby, who lives in Howick. “It’s fast and active and I just love the sport. “Running, tacking people – it’s pretty fun.” She plays first-five eighth

and in 2015 was the first girl to be picked for Pakuranga’s Beecroft Cherrybrook Tour in Sydney, Australia. There were no girls in the Australian opposition and their reaction to Abby was priceless. “I wear head gear,” she explained. “And at the end of the game, when I took it off, all the guys were like, ‘Oh, that’s a girl’.” When she’s not playing rugby she’s playing representative touch for Counties Manukau or tag20 rugby for New Zealand, not to mention a myriad of

other sports teams. Her love of the oval ball game came from watching her older brother play, she said, and she wants to eventually play for the New Zealand Women’s Sevens team. Kylah, who lives in Shelly Park, has the same goal. She wants to play professionally. Her connection to the sport didn’t come from her family but nevertheless started early. The front rower remembers playing rugby with boys in kindergarten and doing the haka. “I’ve always looked up to the

All Blacks. When I was little, most people would ask the girls ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ They’d be like, ‘Oh, I want to be a princess’... I’d be like, ‘I want to be an All Black’.” Kylah said one of her big goals is to win her first championship and get her name on the wall at the Pakuranga United clubrooms. “Because then I would be one of the first girls on the wall and ... that would just mean I could leave my mark here.”

The last time the Hornets OAR side won the championship was in 2007, Mr
