to the area. “The man was spoken to throughout the evening. “A decision was made to not enter the address in order to ensure his safety and the safety of police officers at the scene. Police ordered local residents to stay indoors during the armed incident. An officer was stationed at the intersection of Eastern Beach Road, Jern Place and Vivian Wilson Drive last Monday night. He advised approaching motorists they were unable to turn right into The Esplanade. Three more police officers, one of whom was armed, were posted at the intersection of Eastern Beach Road and The Esplanade.

OLICE unable to convince an armed man to leave his Eastern Beach property eventually used tear gas to flush him out. Officers arrived at the man’s home in The Esplanade just before 1pm last Monday to talk to him about an alleged domestic incident. A Counties Manukau Police spokeswoman says the 38-year-old refused to engage with officers when they approached the property. “Because he was in possession of a firearm, the area around The Esplanade was safely cordoned and contained to ensure public safety. “The police armed offenders squad and negotiation team were deployed

A number of armed police officers were stationed in McCrystal Avenue, along with members of the St John Ambulance specialist emergency response team. After a 19-hour stand-off with the man, police fired tear gas into his house to force him to come out at about 8am last Tuesday. He was safely taken into custody. Road cordons were lifted by police when the situation was deemed safe at about 8.30am. Eastern Beach eateries remained open to diners on Monday night during the armed incident. activity. Counties Manukau East Police area commander, inspector Wendy Spiller, thanks local residents for their patience during the stand-off. “The safety of members of the public is our priority when we attend any incident involving firearms, she says. “We are very aware that having road cordons in place for this type of incident can cause issues with commuter traffic, and having so many police vehicles in the area can create some disturbances. “We’re thankful for the public’s support during this time and are very happy to have resolved the incident peacefully. Eastern Beach resident Graham

Peet and his wife were returning to their home on Monday night when stopped by police. “I managed to turn left into The Esplanade to go to my brother’s home instead, says Mr Peet. “After waiting a couple of hours, I came up with the plan of driving back out, then along Vivian Wilson Drive where Willow Park Christian Camp had its gate open. “I drove through the grounds and out the other end at Hostel Access Road, which was beyond the farthest police road block on The Esplanade, to our home. Mr Peet says he understands the people at the property visited by police on Monday had been living there for less than a month.

FRUSTRATED: Residents of Swan Crescent, in Pakuranga – John Davies, Kerry Fitzpatrick, Bruce Barrack and Graham Bishop – have been waiting four months for the Auckland Council to address the problem of a collapsed tree that has fallen from a public reserve into a Tamaki River inlet.

It’s only a wee little tree OPINION, by MARIANNE KELLY

SUPPOSE the guys and gals who man the Auckland Council’s call centre have to put up with a lot from us bolshie residents and ratepayers. It’s probably why they occasionally get confused. So let’s give the beneďŹ t of the doubt to the soul who ďŹ gured that a tree that had toppled into a city waterway from council reserve land, otherwise known as the Queen’s Chain, was the responsibility of the ofďŹ cers at Watercare, who manage the water we drink and wash in, or maybe the Auckland harbour master, who makes sure there are no hazards in the shipping or recreational boating lanes and areas. But, please guys this is just a little tree that’s fallen into the water in a pretty little inlet of the Tamaki River in Pakuranga.

The inlet is one of the supercity’s hidden treasures and the good folk of Swan Crescent want it to remain that way. Witness the carefully engineered paving and steps trailing to the water’s edge, the beautifully maintained greenery, and the seat for folks to rest on as they contemplate the sun setting gently to the west over the Tamaki’s shimmering water. But one of the neighbours isn’t playing the game. The council didn’t initially want to remove the tree that has fallen from its land into the water, sitting there like a sodden eyesore. this waterway. But the residents would like the council to act like a good neighbour and take the same pride in the environment as they do. After four months of toing and froing, it’s not surprising that a band of Swan Crescent vigilantes decided they were being endlessly fobbed off with any old story, just to get rid of them. But they are made of sterner stuff and the issue is no longer a sodden tree. A principle is at stake here. Whoever would have made the dumb suggestion that a helicopter would be needed to squeeze itself into the restricted airspace above the inlet, not to mention

the residents’ houses? And, of course, the cost of a helicopter is beyond us ratepayers’ pockets for jobs like this. The residents have a much better idea. Get a couple of blokes or blokesses on the job with a chainsaw and a chipper – in fact, they would do it themselves in a tick if the health and safety rules weren’t so ridiculous. So after four months of “agonyâ€? and the Times suggestion that the council start acting like a good neighbour, the council’s local and sports parks south team has relented, saying the job can be done at a reasonable cost by a small-tracked vehicle, which will winch the tree out of the water and it will be cut up. â– This column was inspired by the news story headlined, Their persistence ďŹ nally pays off, which can be read at www. times.co.nz.

Parents grieving for special son By Chris Harrowell

B

RETT and Maria Sutherland are unable to escape the emotional pain that’s filled their lives since Friday, April 11. That’s the day the Flat Bush couple’s popular and outgoing son Brody Sutherland fell off his Ducati motorcycle while riding along Stancombe Road, less than a minute from his home. The 17-year-old swerved to avoid the driver of a Honda motor vehicle, who allegedly failed to give way to him while turning into Stancombe Road from Topland Drive at about 7pm. Brody fell from his motorcycle and was struck and run over by a Holden Colorado utility vehicle being driven in the opposite direction. He died of his injuries at the scene. The Honda car’s teenage driver has been charged by police with careless driving causing death. His case is before the courts. “We are beyond devastated, Mrs Sutherland told the Times, about her son’s tragic death. “For us, Brody is still part of our family and all of our friends feel the same way. We get good support from them, but are still coming to terms with it. We don’t think we will ever come to terms with it. Brody attended Ormiston Senior College in Flat Bush and had worked at the Repco automotive parts store in Botany for 18 months at the time of his death. Motorcycles were his passion. He’d worked hard and saved his money, buying the Ducati motorbike earlier this year. As a way to keep his memory alive, Mr Sutherland and a number of family members and friends left Auckland on November 23 for a 10-day motorcycle road trip. They rode, with a small support

crew, to Invercargill for the annual Burt Munro Challenge. The popular event is named for the Kiwi motor sport legend and features motorcycle beach, speedway, circuit and super-cross racing. “We picked up various people along the way and had a core group of about 15 riders, says Mr Sutherland. “Brody and I were planning to do the Burt Munro Challenge this year. “It was like a bucket list thing for

him and it’s something all riders do. “This would have been his first road trip with me, but it didn’t come to fruition. We decided to do it in his memory instead. Some of Brody’s ashes were scattered at Oreti Beach, Southland, before the memorial riders returned to Auckland. The rest of his ashes are in an urn in the family’s living room. “It turned out to be a special time for me and it wasn’t an easy thing to

do, says Mr Sutherland. “It’s important that Brody stays alive for us in spirit. Mr and Mrs Sutherland say their son achieved a lot in his 17 years and “would give anything a shot. “He wasn’t afraid of anything, says his mum. “Brody made an impression on his peers and work colleagues. It [his death] was terrible for them. “He had real magnetism and people from all walks of life have been

affected. Brody is believed to have been riding his red Ducati motorcycle to a friend’s house on the night of the crash. His parents heard emergency services responding to an incident near their home, but had no idea what had happened. “We didn’t know it was for Brody, says Mrs Sutherland. “A neighbour came and told us that Brody had been in an accident. “To get there and find out he’d already gone was just a massive shock. I really wanted to see him one last time. “By then they had put him in the ambulance and I felt like I had abandoned him. I wanted to give him one last cuddle. Police officers at the scene advised Mr and Mrs Sutherland to return home and wait to be contacted. They later went to Counties Manukau East Police headquarters in Flat Bush and then to a morgue to identify Brody’s body. “It was a haunting experience, says Mrs Sutherland. “This has shattered our world and it’s been heart-wrenching. We miss him so much. Brody’s parents strongly encourage motorists to pay more attention while using the road. “Drivers generally aren’t aware of motorcycles, says Mr Sutherland. “The crash should never have happened. Mrs Sutherland adds: “People don’t understand that motorcycles aren’t like cars. On a bike, you can’t just slam on the brakes and it comes to a stop. “From where we sit, Brody should still be here today. It’s been a bitter pill to swallow.

Sharing Christmas spirit

Collision course with cops THE saying “hitting a brick wall literally struck home for one alleged car thief shortly before 4am yesterday. As he was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle, he crashed into Glen Innes Police Station. The early morning journey got worse for the driver and his female companion, who decided to run from the scene only to be found by police a short distance away. The alleged driver was also forbidden to drive and, when tested, was found to be over the legal breath-alcohol limit. The vehicle had been stolen from a Panmure property and sustained considerable damage. The driver suffered a minor head injury and the police station has some cracks that didn’t exist on Tuesday. The 20-year-old driver was due to appear in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with resisting police, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, excess breath alcohol and being a forbidden and unlicensed driver. Auckland City Police district commander, Superintendent Richard Chambers, says that while the car’s resting place can be seen as comical, the fact a young unlicensed man was driving allegedly in a stolen vehicle while intoxicated is no laughing matter.

RMISTON’S vibrant ethnic diversity will be on public display at the third annual Christmas in the Courtyard community event this Saturday. It’s free for the public and staged at Ormiston Senior College in Flat Bush from 5-8pm. The colourful event is organised by Ormiston Community Vision chairman Norman Sutton with funding from sources including the Howick Local Board. “We’ve got Indian, Korean, Chinese and Polynesian dancers and musicians coming along to perform, he told the Times. “There will be bouncy castles and face-painting for children, ethnic and traditional food stalls, a clown, kite-flying, a lolly scramble and pony rides. We’re also having a monster raffle, with proceeds going to the South Asian Trust, which works with new migrants. It’s a real family event. Raffle prizes up for grabs include a Samsung electronic tablet, Mad Butcher and Fruit World vouchers and a barbecue. A number of Christian churches based in Ormiston and Flat Bush are also involved. Their members will publicly sing Christmas carols and tell the Christian story with help from a traditional nativity scene featuring Sancta Maria Catholic College pupils. “We want to make the event a reflection of our community’s demographics, says Mr Sutton. “It’s about bringing everyone together for a Christmas celebration. We have a distinct community in Ormiston and are not like Howick or Botany. Mr Sutton says Ormiston Senior College staff members are keen for

REVENUE Minister Todd McClay says Inland Revenue (IR) has doubled the number of people caught committing tax fraud in 2014, compared to the previous year. “We’ve long signalled we will not tolerate people trying to rip off the system, he says. “We’ve invested heavily in finding evasion and it’s paying off. IR identified fraud-related discrepancies totalling $10.4 million, compared to $4.5m in 2013. Most discrepancies were connected with Working for Families tax credits or personal tax summaries, involving improper use of documentation or obtaining financial gain the taxpayer was not entitled to. “We trust taxpayers to do the right thing, and the majority do, but those out to defraud the system should know there is a very high probability of being caught.

MX is Sacha Earnest’s “thingâ€?. The Mountain Raiders BMX Club member’s dedication to riding has earned her one of 15 AMP ‘Do Your Thing’ national scholarships worth $10,000. Eight-year-old Sacha is a twotime BMX world champion and is keen to become an ambassador for the sport. In 2013, she won the girls’ 5-7 class at the world championships held at Vector Arena in downtown Auckland, and then took out the girls’ 8 category in The Netherlands earlier this year. Along with her mum and dad, Anna and Dion, Sacha applied for the AMP scholarship to assist with winning another world title in Belgium next year. “We needed to look at things that could help us to travel back to Europe to represent New Zealand again,â€? says Sacha. “My parents helped me with the application. It started with explaining I was a two-time BMX world champion and that I would love to

EEP both your hands above the table at all times and never on your lap. It’s also quite common for people to spend up to an hour at the dinner table. These were some of the cultural etiquette tips given to the group of Flying Kiwis when they first landed in the capital of Santiago de Chile that’s surrounded by mountains of the Andes. “Chileans are very friendly and family-oriented people. They spend a lot of family time together,” says Botany Downs Secondary College student Shae Miramai Parsons, one of seven students on a fully-funded scholarship to Chile. The Flying Kiwis programme is for senior students studying Spanish at a New Zealand secondary school. Students spend three weeks in Santiago with a home-stay family, attending school and experiencing a new culture while practising their language skills. To be eligible, pupils have to be studying Spanish at senior level, able to communicate confidently in the language when it comes to making plans, asking for directions or help. The programme encourages Kiwi schools to build relationships with Chilean ones and promotes NZ school education to the Chilean market. “Even though it was quite cold, it was a very warm atmosphere. There’s so much warmth with a lot of hugging and kissing and never a dull moment. “There are a lot of international shops, and we were out practically every evening shopping, visiting friends or having fiestas,” says the 16-year-old. “Chileans are very vibrant and alive, there’s dancing, singing and laughter,” says Shae, who stayed with mum Maria Luisa Briceño, a lawyer living with her daughters Alicia and Florencia, aged 13 and 17 respectively.

“Their grandmother had also come over from Florida while I was there.” After attending the Liceo Amanda Labarca School, named after a feminist icon in Chile, the year 12 student discovered “they don’t offer a lot of choices of subjects like our schools do”. The group of Flying Kiwis visited Escuela Nueva Zelandia, a school named after New Zealand and located in Independicia commune, an underprivileged area in Santiago. “It was quite humbling to see kids who didn’t have much,” she says, of her visit to the school. “We also visited La Moneda, the presidential palace in Santiago, built in neoclassical style and got to learn about what shaped the people and its country.” The Flying Kiwis scholarship programme has been developed in

response to the highly successful Chilean government-sponsored Pingüinos sin Fronteras (Penguins without Borders) scholarship, piloted in Auckland last year. The scheme awards fully-funded scholarships to students from all over Chile to live and study for two terms in NZ in order to improve their English language skills and benefit from an overseas experience. NZ is the first country to develop such an education exchange with Chile, creating bonds between the two countries and lifelong connections for all the students taking part. Shae’s advice to all students learning the Spanish language is: “There’s no chance of experiencing this once in a lifetime trip if you don’t apply for the scholarship. “Though it was really rushed once my Spanish teacher nominated me, it was worth every moment.”

Mix 1 tbsn sesame oil, 1 tbsn soy sauce, 3 cloves crushed garlic and 1 teaspoon brown sugar in a shallow baking dish. Put the asparagus (about a dozen) in the dish and toss to thoroughly coat. Lightly oil the hotplate and throw on the asparagus for about 7or 8 minutes (depending on thickness of stems) until tender or to suit. Garnish with sesame seeds before serving. Meaning of Christmas explored By Chris Harrowell

“It’s taken hours and hours of work to get it ready.

Eastgate Christian Centre’s annual Jingle All The Way walk-through production is for anyone keen to discover the true meaning of Christmas.

Mr Taylor says the church wants the public production to draw in people of all ethnicities and faiths. “We had Muslims and Buddhists come through it last year and had some really great conversations with them afterwards, he says.

It’s publicly presented at the church in Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga, at 7-10pm nightly from December 8-23.

“We invite everyone to come and see it and it’s a totally non-threatening atmosphere.

The 20-minute interactive show is organised by the church’s associate pastor Sam Taylor and is suitable for people of all ages.

“There will also be face-painting, balloon animals, free lollipops, and tea and coffee.

It’s staged with public funding from the Howick Local Board.

“They can dress up in fun costumes and hats with their family members and have their picture taken in the free photo booth.

“We’ve got about 250 volunteers involved and it’s something that allows people to come and celebrate Christmas with their family and friends, Mr Taylor told the Times.

“People are also more than welcome to talk to any of our church members about anything they want.

“We want to bring people back to what Christmas is really about, which is the birth of Jesus Christ. “The world commercialises Christmas somewhat and it should be a more meaningful time.

Among the Eastgate Christian Centre members helping to bring the church’s public Christmas walk-through production to life are, from left, Gabby Fields, Luke Oswald, Rachel Randall and Andy Shudall. Times photo Wayne Martin will be guided by Jingles the Christmas elf on a very special journey to the North Pole.

“This is the 10th year we’ve staged Jingle All the Way and it’s for the whole family.

People are also welcome to attend the church’s Christian family services at 7pm on Christmas Eve, December 24, and at 9.30am on Christmas morning, December 25. 128205-V3

“We believe this is very relevant to where people are in their everyday lives and that everyone will be able to relate to it in some way.

The all-ages Jingle All the Way Christmas public walk-through production runs nightly from 7-10pm from December 18-23 at Eastgate Christian Centre, at 5 Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga. Entry is free.

A COMEDY BY NORM FOSTER SEASON: FEB 28 TO MAR 21, 8PM Leon, a mediocre novelist, and his best mate Bill, a statistician, make a list of the 10 most desirable characteristics for Bill’s ideal woman – the qualities he wants in a soulmate. But when this allegedly“perfect woman” turns up at Bill’s apartment, the men quickly realise their list could use a few revisions, which leads to hilarious results. “Funny, sophisticated and sexy.” – Hamilton Spectator.

A DRAMATIC COMEDY BY AMY ROSENTHAL SEASON: MAY 9 TO 30 Unmarried sisters in their 50s share a London flat. Nina is brisk, dynamic and gainfully employed; Nancy is plump, self-conscious and suddenly redundant. Urged by Nina to find a hobby, Nancy stumbles into a job as a model for a group of eccentric lifedrawing students. Initially shocked to discover that life models pose naked, Nancy is unexpectedly liberated by the experience, which she keeps a secret from her sister.

A DRAMA BY DAVID WILLIAMSON SEASON: JULY 11 TO AUG 1 At 29, Helen has a vital operation that stops her from having what she desperately wants: a child. Her younger sister Claudia gives her a wonderful gift when she agrees to be a surrogate mother. But what happens when, years later, Claudia discovers that she and husband Martin cannot conceive and that Kelly, the child she gave to her sister, is the only baby she will ever bear?

A DRAMA BY STEPHEN MASSICOTTE SEASON: SEPT 12 TO OCT 3 A thunderstorm creates a chance meeting between a young man and woman, both seeking shelter in the same barn in rural Canada. She’s an English immigrant; he’s a local about to do his duty in World War I. As their love story unfolds through honest, intimate storytelling, Mary’s Wedding provides an elegant and theatrical look at life, love and war, using a captivating dreamscape to weave past and present together.

A COMEDY BY DAVID LEWIS SEASON: NOV 14 TO DEC 5 Fran arranges a dinner party but husband Terry fails to turn up because he is searching for a yellow-bellied flycatcher. This is the last straw in their seven-year marriage. Professionals are called in and friends, therapists and even the birds become embroiled in the escalating crisis in this comedy of marital calamity. “Tremendously entertaining … it all culminates in an unexpectedly hilarious climax, worthy of Ayckbourn.”– The Stage.

A Clear Solution to protect your Eyes W

ith summer now upon us and ultraviolet levels on the rise, Eyes of Howick are pleased to be able to offer a range of solutions which reduce the risk of premature eye aging. How Sunlight damages the eyes General aging of delicate skin around the eyes: Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibres in the skin called elastin. When these fibres break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. Eyelid cancers: UV exposure, particularly along the lower lid can lead to Basal cell and Squamous cell carcinoma as well as Melanoma. Signs of these include new lumps or bumps *Terms and conditions apply. that don’t disappear or that bleed frequently, persistent red eye that does not respond to medication, newly acquired STSIRTEMOTPO KCIWOH FO SEYE pigmented lesions or unexplained loss 5655 435 90 .T zn.oc.kciwohfoseye@ofni .of E eye lashes. 4102 dnalkcuA ,kciwoH ,teertS notciP 001 Growths on the eye surface: Problems with the conjunctiva, the protective membrane covering the outside of the eye and the inside of the eyelids, are particularly common in New Zealand due to our high UV exposure. ter UV rays, but by doing so for many years, they may become damaged. This is especially true for the lens, which through years of UV absorption, turns yellowish which we call cataract. Cataracts reduce vision quality and induce problems with glare. Solar Keratitis, or corneal sunburn is due to excessive UV exposure which can literally burn the clear surface at the front of the eye that admits light and images to the retina. Macular degeneration: The macula is the central part of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The retina processes all visual images. It is responsible for your ability to perform fine visual tasks such as reading. Damage is thought to be caused by genetic and environmental factors such as smoking and UV exposure. People over the age of 50 years are at risk. Intraocular melanoma: Although rare, it is the most common eye cancer in adults and often is without symptoms. Tunes that may make dad smile MUSIC, by PJ Taylor

clarinet player Nils Olsen, who also add vocals, are some of the funniest songs ever written in New Zealand.

Dad’s the geezer in the house that’s usually the hardest to buy gifts for Christmas.

The commentaries of everyday life in Aotearoa are pure genius and hilarious in their word craft, as Howickians can testify to, after seeing him with the Trio and Too Many Chiefs in gigs at Uxbridge this year.

He’s always delighted to receive socks and undies, but as most old men can be, he’s quietly grumbling on the inside: “If only I could get a present I really dig.

After tracking up and down this land with his varied bands over the years, including the acclaimed Hot Club Sandwich, London’s finally got all his brilliant songs down in recordings.

Well, help is at hand, especially if your dad enjoys music. Here’s a selection of CDs that may tickle his fancy, to rekindle memories of his glory days.

30:30 Hindsight

backed by a band that features most of his family: son Jackie on power drums and gifted singing daughter Mahalia in the spotlights.

If dad knows Jimmy Barnes, chances are he enjoyed yahooing and having, at least, a few amber frothies in his heyday. Barnesy did, which of course is a major understatement.

And on top of the superb recordings and Jimmy being in excellent vocal nick, the roll-call of world-class artists who have collaborated on the new takes is impressive.

But like a finely aged working-class man, Barnsey has matured and settled down – survived, thankfully – and so too probably has dad.

Kiwi connections are there too with Shihad blazing in unison on Love and Hate and Jon Stevens on I’d Rather Be Blind.

Jimmy Barnes

And there’s no reason why father can’t enjoy this rocking collection to celebrate Jimmy’s 30 years as a solo artist, after a rollicking decade as legendary frontman of Cold Chisel.

A standout is the legendary Easybeats song of 1968, Good Times, this time collaborated with Whangarei-born Keith Urban, after Jimmy did it with the late Michael Hutchence in 1987.

This two-CD release is a real corker, with CD1 possessing brilliant, clean and crisp new recordings of Barnsey classics,

Steven Van Zandt jets in from his E Street Band and Springsteen commitments to star on his penned song Ride The Night Away, while all the Aussie stars are there

SOUNDS LIKE alongside Uncle Jimmy – brother-in-law Diesel on I’d Die To Be With You Tonight, The Living End on Lay Down Your Guns and Bernard Fanning on I’m Still On Your Side. After you’ve thoroughly digested CD1, which is perfect for a summer road trip, CD2 features many more of Barnesy’s beauts from 1984 to 2010. If dad is like me, we go through phases when we’re into Barnsey’s music, and then we have to give it a break because we’ve heard it a lot.

If father has a sense of humour, even deep down, and a greater sense of the good old days, this could just about cheer him up on Christmas Day.

AT THE

The yesteryear theme extends to the musical style he prefers, the blues, swing and R n’ B that was born from its jazz and gospel roots in the southern United States in the 1920s and ’30s.

But you and dad will be chuckling when focusing in on the lyrics in I Think I’ll Buy A Yacht, Three Little Words, I Hugged My Mate, Like Me, Like Me (The Facebook Song) and my favourite, Country’s Buggered – no offence.

Andrew London’s songwriting will appeal to the wordsmith gent, as he’s a bona fide old-fashioned humorist in lyricism, an accomplished and stylish guitar player, and good Kiwi bloke.

You don’t laugh at every track on Ladies a Plate, as the Trio has delivered a couple of delicately tuneful covers of Lennon and McCartney’s You Won’t See Me and Mann and Evans’ No Moon At All, featuring Kirsten on vocals.

It’s a Kiwi WIN! A non-alcoholic Christmas summer drinks hamper favourite After a wild and wet winter, the light at the end of the year is almost here, so let’s all give cheers for summer!

services of a succession of pines and the quantity of presents has greatly diminished over the years.

But, for some, a Kiwi Christmas wouldn’t be complete without the much-loved pohutukawa.

This must be because of the tree and cannot be explained by deteriorating behaviour on our part... surely not!

Truly a summer blessing, pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) serve up a plethora of bright, red flowers at this time of year.

Pohutukawa may be able to withstand a few days indoors, festooned with decorations, but remember that, unlike the kids, they should not be spoilt rotten!

First adopted as Christmas trees by early European settlers, pohutukawa has since become an iconic Kiwi favourite, synonymous with the festive season.

Be sparing with fertiliser while the tree is indoors, as too much of a good thing can cause its flowers to fade.

The pohutukawa was first given the moniker of New Zealand Christmas tree in 1897 by Ferdinand von Hochstetter, an Austrian geologist, and Kiwis have been rocking around this particular evergreen ever since. And pohutukawa offer a favourite stopping point for Santa. Since growing up, we’ve employed the

Primarily a native of the North Island, this tree is also found in the South Island in areas where frosts are moderate. Tolerant of salt, these evergreens grow well in coastal regions, and they’re suited to growing in poor and rocky soil. Although they can grow to more than 15 metres in height, the

stocky shape of the pohutukawa means it’s well suited to gardens. There are 12 Metrosideros species endemic to Aotearoa, including a number of dwarf varieties, such as the popular Tahiti Dwarf, or Kermadec pohutukawa (Metrosideros kermadecensis). Much smaller than its mainland cousin, this native of the Kermadec Islands is often mistakenly identified as the NZ Christmas tree. Taking a leaf from the books of many a young Kiwi looking to fly off overseas, today pohutukawa can be found in South-Eastern Australia, parts of South Africa and even California. Yes, our humble native has come a long way from the shores of little old NZ. But, although he’s hit Hollywood, he’s still in Aotearoa now, Dr Ropata! So, while some may choose to rely on pine for this Christmas, we say, let’s get native!

However, seeing as the boys in blue seem determined to blow our fun – we mean, keep us safe! – those sober of thought may consider a tipple or two, hold the alcohol, especially when driving. Despite the “no booze is good news message, thanks to crafty Kiwi companies, we have a hamper packed full of goodies in a handy Naked Cuisine cooler bag. This prize pack includes:

A four pack of Charlie’s Straight Up Cola On a roll with cola? Serving drinks “straight up has long been a strategy of the local

(known as Qi or Ch’i), these drinks may be a healthy option, but not at the expense of good taste.

Two bottles of Phoenix Sparkling Organic Grape

Charlie’s brand. And now owner The Better Drinks Co has made its “Marc on the popular cola market with a drink featuring real kola nuts and natural malt with no added chemicals.

A sampler pack of Ch’i Designed to invigorate and revitalise, CH’I’s new Herbal Lemon and CH’I Lemon Grass and Lime varieties offer tasty ways to chill out this summer. Developed from ancient Chinese blends once thought to enhance the energies of our bodies

Seeing certain Firebirds ascend from the ashes to win the recent Super Slam may have left a taste akin to ashes in the mouths of Auckland cricket fans. However, thanks to new Phoenix Sparkling Organic Grape, we can at least allay the flavour of those grapes of wrath. Refreshing, crisp and made from natural ingredients, Phoenix Sparkling Organic Grape joins a top team of drinks made for Kiwis by Kiwis. And, after all a bird in a bottle is worth 11 on the pitch!

To be in to win this prize pack, presented in a handy Naked Cuisine cooler bag, simply complete the form on the Competitions section at www.times.co.nz. One entry per person/email address; and entries close on December 17, 2014. The winner will be notified by phone or email. Good luck!

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, December 11, 2014 — 31

Looking back, 25 years ago... From the files of the Howick and Pakuranga Times, in 1989 Queues rile customers

DECEMBER 4, 1989: Queues at Howick Post Office have reached such lengths that customers claim they’re now seeking service at Pakuranga rather than face the long wait. At times lines of customers stretch outside the Post Office door and some people face waits for service of more than 20 minutes. “It’s diabolic, says Sandy Hillary. She uses the Post Office every day and has come to expect waits of at least an hour a week. “They should open the other Post Offices again – the Highland Park on Botany Road. Russell Plews also finds the thought of a long wait for customer service daunting. “Sometimes it’s so long I go down to Pakuranga, he says. Twice weekly visits by Judy Churchouse mean her lunch break is decimated. “It takes up to 10 minutes or more when I come here – I would love to have something done about it, she says. Although Gabrielle Smith does not know if the long waits are the fault of the staff or not, she states “almost any other Post Office around would be better. “Sometimes the queues stretch right out the door – queues always queues.

Historic calendar

DECEMBER 11: Residents in Whitford, Beachlands and Maraetai have the perfect present to send overseas relatives for Christmas. Maraetai-Beachlands Lions Club and the Beachlands Round Table have joined forces to produce a 1990 calendar featuring old photographs of the area. It has been printed in sepia to give it an authentic look. Some of the photos have been seen before in previous editions, but many have been published for the first time.

Some also come from private collections owned by long-standing residents. Highlights of the calendar include photos of bullock teams being driven down the main road towards Maraetai and Whitford and Whites Aviation aerial pictures of Beachlands in the 1950s.

New ventures

DECEMBER 11: Youth leaders Sarah Vallings and Suzanne Thomson have the chance to put their talents to good use. The young women who lead a Rangers group in Pakuranga are going their own separate ways, with Suzanne travelling to Antarctica and Sarah to Uganda. Suzanne was selected by the National Girl Guiding Association to join a group of four youth leaders exploring Antarctica for a month. “We’ll be one of many New Zealand groups centred at Scott Base. The focus is on survival techniques, for example, we build igloos and also help with maintenance around the base. Suzanne studies geography at Auckland University and looks forward to checking out the landforms of Antarctica. “It will be a great opportunity to see something hardly anyone else gets to see. And if Suzanne likes what she sees it may be a chance to look at following a career in Antarctic research. Sarah will travel to Uganda to work in a nursery school. She travels “into the unknown for two months on her own initiative. “I’ve done a bit of travelling before and saw an article in the paper about the nursery. Sarah thought she would like to go to Uganda and sent a letter to the nursery school to see if her services would be useful. She’s training to be a doctor and feels the experience could be good contact for her career.

Pupils were encouraged to get fresh fruits and vegetables and invite their parents. A week prior, the senior students of the school hosted a market day. Teacher Maryanne Rogers says 5+ A Day is about helping students to develop lifelong healthy eating habits. “It creates an awareness and understanding of the importance of healthy eating. Each syndicate worked on a theme that ranged from lemons to radish and strawberries. Ten-year-old Alisha Master of year 6 says: “At the market day some of the things we were selling were lemon curd, lemonade, lemon concentrate, radish carvings and radish garden. “There was soil with seeds, salad in a basket and strawberries in selfwatering planters. The final verdict? “It was exciting, noisy and yummy.

EALTHY food doesn’t have to be boring. It can be exciting and fun to eat as students of Riverina School discovered after participating in the 5+ A Day Challenge for schools. Teacher Caroline Dickinson decided to get the children more involved by organising a Master Chef contest for the entire school. Each class got a goody bag filled with ingredients on the day of the competition and were challenged to use them in order to create a healthy and fun snack to eat. Everyone was bursting with ideas and vitality. The children and teachers prepared a variety of dishes ranging from hummus and vegetable dip to fruit kebabs, salad taco shells, mango and strawberry smoothies and a tasty banana cake. Lynn Plows, food and technology teacher at Pakuranga Intermediate School, played judge, while Riverina principal Doreen Martin cheered for the kids in the school hall. The winner was declared amidst squeals of delight.

The children were even more thrilled when the judge gave the teams personal gifts she’d brought along. “It was the flavour, presentations and the five-plus ingredients that the teams were judged on, says Mrs Plows, who has been associated with Pakuranga Intermediate for 27 years. Mrs Dickinson says the idea stemmed from a parent who mentioned in a survey that she’s keen to have a healthy food day. “We were trying to get the children to be concerned about their diets and got the whole school in to discuss what five-a-day [fruit and vegetables] means and why it’s healthy. “We then introduced the competition and each class was asked to pick up a brown paper bag with ingredients they couldn’t see. There was a surprise element to it. “Once the class had their respective bags, the children discussed with their teacher about what could be an exciting dish. They had

TIGHT CONTEST: From left, the B52s’ Jackson Spier is tagged out at third base by Dane Hill; Nish Chand earns a free walk after getting by a pitch; the victorious Hori Hawks; and Mike Taliaferro on the mound. Times photos Daniel Silverton

Divisional grade rivals do battle on diamond for shield TWO huge plays by youngster Isaac Shailer helped Howick Pakuranga (HP) Baseball Club’s Hori Hawks defend the Zingo Tromsky Shield against the HP B52s at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday. The shield is put on the line

each time the fierce senior divisional grade rivals face one another. The Hori Hawks, formerly called the Yankees, had won the silverware for the first time in a number of attempts the week prior.

The B52s started strong, scoring five runs in the first innings. In the top of the sixth inning with the B52s leading 9-8, 14-yearold Isaac showed express pace from shortstop to take a fly ball with a diving catch beyond the third base foul line, to get the

second out. “It was just immense,” says Hawks captain Kevin Nepia. “He has done it before, he just never quits on a play.” In the Hawks’ next turn to bat, Isaac tied the game by stealing home from third base.

athlete with an incredible unbeaten record over the past four years. A double Olympic champion, at Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, she has won four gold and one silver at world championships, and three gold and a silver at both world indoor and Commonwealth Games. Such has been her dominance that this year she achieved the supreme honour of being voted World Athlete of the Year. Like Ko, Adams is absolutely dedicated to her sport and is likely to become our greatest Olympic athlete by striking gold yet again at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Meanwhile, the omission of Jesse Ryder from the 30 candidates the NZ cricket selectors have named for 15 places in the Black Caps ODI World

Cup squad comes as no surprise. Despite Ryder’s alcohol problems, the selectors still gave him a chance in selecting him for the national A team’s tour of the United Arab Emirates. That he should fail to tour because of “personal reasons” was his choice. But, in doing so, he shot himself in the foot. Which is a shame, really, because he is such an exciting talent when he is blasting the ball to the boundary with such nonchalant ease, and he can also be a useful bowler. Unfortunately his disruptive antics when under the influence make him a loner, not a team man, making him one of many naturally gifted sports characters who failed to reach their true potential. Meanwhile, in Ryder’s absence

“He loves having a crack, it was brilliant,” says Nepia. “It was good to see him pull it off.” The Hawks scored one more run to take the win with the B52s unable to add to their tally in the top of the final seventh inning.

Adams and Ko are both superstars O

NE is a six foot, four inch and 120-kilogram Amazonian shot putter, the other a relatively tiny five foot, five inch golfer. But whoever you favour to win the Halberg Awards NZ Supreme Sportsperson prize there is no denying Val Adams and Lydia Ko are superstars. Last year it was the delightfully humble Ko whose claims are even greater this time after her first season on the LPGA tour as a professional bagged her $2,089,033. That included three wins, two seconds and nine other top 10 finishes. Amazingly, she has never failed to make the cut in open company, both as a professional and amateur, in 40 tournaments. Little wonder then that, at the tender age of 17, she was voted Rookie

Agnew’s Angle of the Year with the temperament and potential to become the greatest woman golfer the world has seen. What makes Ko’s progress so fascinating is that the competition is strong, especially that coming from a growing group of Asians who have a similar work ethic to the Koreanborn Lydia, who trains 35 hours a week. While Ko’s talent and self-effacing nature have made her such a loved personality, Adams is also an amazing

it will be interesting to see whether Brendon McCullum, a natural number five, is promoted to opener as he was so successfully in the drawn test series against Pakistan. With McCullum, Tim Southee and Trent Boult rested, it will be interesting to see how well others challenge for World Cup berths in the remaining ODI games against Pakistan. That is especially true with Daniel Vettori and Anton Devcich joining a bunch of spinners that includes Nathan McCullum, Roneel Hira and Rob Nicol in their bid for selection in the final 15. Devcich’s claims were strengthened by his strong batting performance during the New Zealand A team’s tour which preceded the top team’s Twenty20 and ODI series.

Sunnyhills’ dynasty By Daniel Silverton

UNNYHILLS is just the third club in the history of Tennis Auckland’s Caro Bowl competition to win consecutive premier women’s championships. At Saint Kentigern College last Friday, the Zealandia Sunnyhills team of Sacha Jones, Kairangi Vano, Kelly Drew, Annabel Ellis and CT Ampornachariya defeated Parnell four matches to two, in a repeat of the 2013 decider. Earlier in the week, Jones had defended her Auckland women’s singles title by beating Rosie Cheng 6-2, 6-4, at Scarbro Tennis Centre. The pair met again in the top doubles match in the Caro Bowl final, with Jones and Vano downing Cheng

and Pavlina Nola 6-4, 7-5. With Drew and Ellis losing the bottom doubles 4-6, 3-6, the tie was all square going into the four singles matches. “We were happy with that, coach Peter Langsford told the Times. “I thought, and I told the girls, that [Parnell] would to have to win two doubles to beat us. Once we split the doubles 1-1, we were in the driving seat and the favourites. Jones went on to defeat Cheng for the third time in as many days, winning the number one singles 7-5, 6-2. Drew extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory, and Vano took out the first set of her 6-4, 3-6, 0-6 loss to Nola to give Sunnyhills an insurmountable advantage if it came down to a countback.

With Ampornachariya leading in the number four singles match, her opponent withdrew to seal the championship for Sunnyhills. “We knew we had a strong team, and that we had a pretty good chance of winning the whole way through, says Langsford. “It was a complete team effort and we didn’t have to rely on the same players. We used seven players this year. “There was a good feeling when they won and they were proud of what they had done, and so they should have been. Sunnyhills joins Parnell and Remuera as the only clubs to defend the women’s Caro Bowl title since the competition was split into men’s and women’s tournaments in 1991.
