It would seem the stars need to align for the two houses on The Parade to be moved after numerous failed attempts. Sledging them down a steep slope onto a barge and towing them all the way to Mangonui in the Far North was always going to be fraught with challenges. But that’s what Tim Lloyd and his crew of ex-commercial fishermen and handymen intended for the Bucklands Beach houses that were offered for free on condition they were removed from their original site designated for four new subdivisions. The location attracted attention earlier this year when formerly protected pohutukawa on the property were felled to make way for development. The larger, double storey house was built in 1988 and the early 1900s cottage behind it was built by Auckland magnate Alfred Buckland (for whom Bucklands Beach is named) for his daughter. ➤ Turn to Page 3

he boy impaled in the head with a metal stake was not playing “chicken” as media reports have suggested, according to a parent. Emergency services were called to Beachlands on Monday afternoon after a 14-year-old boy was impaled in the head by a metal stake. It had been left out after a real estate open home. Fire crews and ambulances assisted them with specialist cutting equipment after they were
called at 4:45pm. He was transported by a Westpac helicopter to Starship Hospital where he is reported to have been in a critical condition and in an induced coma. He is understood to be stable now. Chief fire officer Shane Rutherford told media on Monday: “He was very lucky to still be alive, he had somebody watching over him.” However a Beachlands parent, who asked not to be named, said they boy was not part of the group
playing chicken. The NZ Herald reported that “friends” were throwing the stake in the air and trying to dodge it. “The boy wasn’t playing chicken. That’s what the boys have told me,” the parent told the Times. “He wasn’t part of it. It’s all very tragic.” According to the NZ Herald, the boy’s mother said her son had surgery overnight. “He had his operation last night to remove the stake from his head

od Save the Flag is ringing out loud and clear in Picton Street, Howick with an invitation extended to those for and against changing the current model to come along and make their feelings known. Wendy Hannah and five friends have taken over the former Jean Jones store and converted it into a place where patriotism for country and flag is welcome. Ms Hannah is an artist and designer and decided that she had been too passive about the flag debate. “I am so passionate about keeping the current flag and that this is not the time for it to be changed,” she says. “I first had the idea of a pop-up gallery, using art as a medium to open up a conversation.” When a group of her friends came in behind her, they discovered the Picton Street shop still un-used and discussion with the owner revealed it could be available for them until December 24. And so the Union Jack design is on the walls, on sofa cushion chairs, even a floor rug is a woven Union Jack, and people can have their photo taken which goes up on the group’s Facebook page.
“People who want to change the flag can also come in and have a conversation along with others who are strongly against the change and the cost,” Ms Hannah says. “It’s great that people are patriotic, all one people working for the good of the country. “Even couples with opposing views have been coming in. People in cars have been slowing in the road and beeping in support. “It’s nice that people can come in here and get their feelings off their chests. It gets a bit heated at times and occasionally we see a person who believes we are destroying their view. But it’s just a conversation.” Along one wall is a series of Ms Hannah’s artworks carrying profound state-

ments. They include two rules, ‘never let the flag hit the floor’ which is taught to military flag bearers, and ‘the flag should always be permitted to fall freely’ which is about respect for the flag. ‘The flag’s last days’ is
about how it will make us feel if we lose it and why we are doing it now, she says. One that resonates most strongly with her, however, is ‘this flag dips before no earthly king’ which relates to her feeling that John Key’s referendum process
is giving the people no choice. ‘For God and country its people fought’ is about the RSA message and the people who died under the flag. “This is one of the reasons why I think now is not the time to change it. It’s respect for them. When William and Catherine are on the throne, then will be the chance to have something contemporary.” The final message ‘26 million MMMMMM...’ is the cost of the referendum process. “Jacinda Ardern put a proposed amendment to the Bill that the second referendum should only take place if the turnout for the first one was 50 per cent of the people,” Ms Hannah says.
Store celebrates through giving back Howick New World is embracing the giving season and continuing with its year-round generous spirit by contributing $15,000 to local community organisations just before Christmas. The money will help Howick & Pakuranga Cricket club with a ‘black tie’ fundraiser dinner, Howick Brass
Band purchase new equipment and enter competitions, and support Howick Bowls Club with their local tournaments. Brendon Jones, owner-operator of Howick New World says, “There are dozens of deserving organisations and we try to give back to as many of them as we can, whether we provide
funds, donate groceries, or participate in their events. Over the last six months, we’ve contributed around $25,000 to 25 charity groups and eight local schools. As a locally owned and operated business being part of a vibrant and connected community means a lot to us.
It’s a pleasure to give back to the community which has been so welcoming since we opened our doors just over a year ago.”

Ruby’s big day coming up By Marianne Kelly

aul Cressey owned a 1937 green Austin 7 when he was 17. He bought it for 50 UK pounds and sold it for 100 UK pounds two years later, then spent the following years wanting to buy another one. Five years ago his wife Sheryn needed a new wash tub, so Mr Cressey looked for one on Trade Me and discovered a red 1938 Austin 7 named Ruby. Mrs Cressey said “let’s buy it”. “So we bought it sight unseen,” Mr Cressey says. “It was in Whangamata and was on the market because the owner had died. He used to drive it in beach hop car events and was well known there. “When we took it into a petrol station to fill up on the way back they said ‘you can’t take Ruby away from us’.” The Cresseys’ granddaughter Grace Funnell, now aged 12, immediately adopted Ruby on arrival in Half Moon Bay. “She already knows how to

Now the engine bay has been repainted and the components powder coated in readiness for the car’s big moment as an entrant in the inaugural Auckland Classic Brit & Euro
Mr Cressey says. “You can purchase one for about $6000-$8000 and it costs about $1000 a year to maintain. But you can have enormous fun. It’s affordable vintage motoring, a hobby all the family can enjoy. Chairman of the Classic Brit & Euro Car show, Reverend Dr Richard Waugh, says it will be great to see the Austin 7 drive in. “Paul’s remarkable little car represents the simplicity of some of the older classic cars,” he says. Representatives of more than 60 car clubs are expected to participate in the show next March. Non-car club members will also be welcome. Entry to the show is free and donations to an annual nominated charity will be sought with the 2016 funds raised going to the Howick Historical Village. Additional information is being regularly added to the event’s website, www.briteurocarshow.nz. Mr Waugh can be contacted by phoning 533-9400 (pvt), 273-9044 (bus), or email rjw@ecw.org.nz.
House moving saga stalls after numerous attempts 9am, but the houses remained. There were problems with equipment availability including lack of a jack and a winch truck. The street drew crowds of onlookers each time the ‘move’ was supposed to happen and naysayers scoffed and called the house movers “cowboys”. But Mr Lloyd and his team remained buoyant about the prospect, even throwing a party the night before one of
the designated moving days. Having moved hundreds of houses in his time, Mr Lloyd is determined. He found out the houses were being given away for free when the more than 2500 sq m piece of waterfront land was cleared for development earlier this year in August. “A mate of mine from Highway House Movers in Whangarei said he couldn’t do it so he asked me.”

n contrast with the SPCA which has a more “fluffy” image for rescuing animals at risk, Auckland Council’s Animal Management manager Tracey Moore agrees that the council-owned company can be regarded in quite a harsh light. “We do get criticised in social media with very unfair criticism of our staff, because these people [on social media] don’t understand what we do,” she says. Animal Management and the SPCA’s roles, she says, are quite different. “The SPCA is a welfare organisation. It was originally mandated to deliver the Animal Welfare Act. Our main responsibility is the Dog Control Act which is different, but there are areas of overlap. “The SPCA relies heavily on donations and fund-raising to carry out its business and is never able to do everything expected of it,” she says. “The core business of the SPCA is dealing with cruelty and neglect.” With a background of working in housing for people, Ms Moore was ready to embrace the legislation surrounding dogs when she took up the manager of Animal Manage-
ment role two years ago. “But I didn’t realise just on what scale the animal industry is,” she says, “how many interested parties and groups there are around dogs and the knowledge and understanding of different perspectives needed. “People are polarised and have strong opinions. We are presenting a balance and trying to do the right thing and it won’t please everybody. Our aim is that we do the right thing, provide a good service and ask are we keeping people safe and holding people to account.” Much of Animal Management’s dog control officer training is on the job, with some having qualifications from the
New Zealand Institute of Animal Control Officers, and some with canine behaviour qualifications from UNITEC. The council organises training with external providers, for example refresher training on conflict management and deescalation. “They come up against very aggressive people,” Ms Moore says. “Some have been doing this job for a long time and have great skills. Some come in from other organisations or sectors and bring particular skills.” But Ms Moore says, like the people who work in the shelters, there is also high turnover among the officers because of the difficulties of the work. “We have a regulatory role

he memory of Santa arriving by helicopter or floating down on a parachute in the Pakuranga Plaza car park still burns bright in people’s minds. Shopping centre events were a “community celebration” back then with hundreds of excited children, parents and grandparents waiting for Santa, says Plaza acting general manager Christie Wrightson. These days, Santa arrives in a more orderly fashion at the Plaza, magically appearing in a box this year to children’s and parents’ delight. After 50 years in existence, there’s little the second oldest shopping mall in Auckland has not seen or done. Firstly owned by Fletchers and more recently Westfield Pakuranga, the historic hub has seen many changes over the years, says Christie. The former open-air town centre is something that resonates with people, she says. “People still remember the fountain outside where Farmers is – it was a fountain and next to it a little ice-cream kiosk. There are lots of fond memories.” Christie was brought on as a branding specialist when the mall was bought by investors
action: Santa parachutes down at the Plaza in 1990 to an eager crowd.
Ross and Dallas Pendergrast of Ladstone Holdings and recalls how its original identity was revived. “They said, ‘find a new name, don’t call it the Plaza’, but a chat to a few locals and we thought ‘how could we call it anything but?’” Locals were overwhelmingly in favour of the name, and passionate about the place which held so many memories such as wandering around the market stalls that is now the food court. It was at the Plaza where the concept for the Auckland Night Markets took off. For many, the Plaza is much
more than a retail site, says Christie. “It has a place in the hearts of so many locals. And that’s what we’re trying to do – give it a heart.” In fact, the mall is big on giving with numerous competitions featuring throughout the year. “This year one of the prizes we gave away was a trip to Singapore – a nod to our Singaporean-based investors [who bought the Plaza last year]. A lovely woman called Jes Magill [former Times employee] won that trip. “I’ve turned travel agent doing the bookings!” she laughs. Meanwhile, the Plaza, which is at the heart of the Pakuranga Town Centre Masterplan, is set for great things with resource consent application for stage 1A of the planned “urban village” to be submitted to council at the end of this year. But the community will remain at the heart of the development, says Christie. “Our tagline is Proudly Local, and we’ve always used the Times to get our message out there. It’s our way of connecting with the wider community and informing them about our vision.”

Bright new look in time for summer at PlaceMakers Pakuranga
ADVERTORIAL SC3619A
V
isitors love a house prepped for summer entertaining and PlaceMakers Pakuranga is setting the standard this season with a fresh new look. In fact, many are noticing a welcome transformation when they step into the long-standing DIY destination on Pakuranga Road next to Lloyd Elsmore Park. Gone is the old and tired store, and in its place a brighter, more contemporary and userfriendly layout. Shelves have been re-racked, displays have been refreshed, everything is visible and accessible and the customer experience has been enhanced. Before, customers struggled to find products but now, with lower shelves and better positioning it’s easy to browse the aisles that are well-organised. Customers will also find a bigger product range, says operations manager Donna Durrant. “We’ve tried to get the mix right across all ranges and the result has been fantastic,” she says. “Now that we’re up to date we’ve realised how much stuff we’ve missed and customers are thrilled to find that they don’t have to go hunting elsewhere.” From basic to high end, to custom DIY, shoppers will find everything they need for every style and budget to create the perfect space. For the improvements, the team has spent time listening to customers and their needs. Before this, the refurbished kitchen and bathroom showroom used to stand in stark contrast to the rest of the store but the changes have completed the look. “We’ve invested time and effort and our local branch operator Rowan Toms has really put a lot of thought into bringing these together so the store looks cohesive and more inviting,” says Donna. The hardworking team has been busy speaking to customers to find out what they think and the response has been positive. “People are really noticing the difference and some who haven’t visited us for some time have said they’ll definitely be coming back as a result of all the changes.” The trade centre formerly located outside has also been brought into the store, creating a more integrated approach. “We want to show that we’re a lot more serious about our hardware and the way we serve our customers so we can build a relationship with them and find out how to serve them better.” Knowledgeable and experienced staff members are better-equipped to serve customers’ wide ranging needs with increased product knowledge and offering advice. We have a paint specialist in store for accu-
rate colour matching. These changes are all part of a drive to achieve superior customer service in both trade and DIY sectors, says Rowan. “Our belief is that no one will be easier to do business with than PlaceMakers Pakuranga.” New outdoor furniture has arrived and a new tap wall feature has been introduced with all the latest designs and functions. Sun-lovers are sure to fall in love with the well-made contemporary outdoor range complete with versatile wicker, steel and timber styles of all colours, shapes and sizes. Whether it’s for the courtyard, the garden, the deck or the back lawn, these attractive pieces of furniture will add some pizzazz to any home. What’s more, with attractive specials coming up for Christmas, PlaceMakers Pakuranga has homes sorted for the New Year so watch this space. The kitchen and bathroom showrooms are particularly a hit this time of year, so don’t forget to browse for inspiration at anytime. The interactive PlaceMakers Kitchens by
Peter Hay concept centre installed last year continues to be popular as clients explore the many materials, dimensions and layouts for an individual, personalised kitchen. The bathroom display still wows those who enter looking for the latest and greatest tapware, vanities, showers and baths. With a comprehensive loyalty programme rewarding all who shop at PlaceMakers, there’s even more reason to shop with this household destination. Gift cards are available too which come handy for stocking fillers and to thank a special someone this Christmas. Make PlaceMakers Pakuranga your place and experience the exciting new changes in store today! Happiness in a box By Natalie Brittan
I
t’s a present that means a lot to those who need it most. This year, hundreds of families will be receiving food hampers as part of Elim Christian Centre’s Christmas Box project. The Saturday event will see the Botany church’s gymnasium piled up high with boxes filled with food staples such as Weetbix and juice as well as a good dollop of treats including chocolate and Christmas cake. This year will see 650 boxes assembled by volunteers, up from 500 last year, says coordinator Natasha Adams. “We have 200 to 300 volunteers this year. There’s been a lot of interest,” she says. Now in its 11th year, the volunteer-driven project costing nearly $100,000 is funded by church donations and local businesses. Lead pastor Steve Green says the boxes go out in vans and are hand-delivered by volunteers to families nominated by the church congregation as well as families identified by Counties Manukau East Police as part of its victim support programme. “We help out families in need who are having a really tough time and need some support this year. The nomination process is all done organically within the church.” It takes the pressure off a lot of families, he says.

GOODWILL: The Christmas Box project run by Elim Christian Centre is all wrapped up and ready to go with the help of, from left, coordinator Natasha Adams, lead pastor Steve Green and Counties Manukau East Police constable Brandon McCarthy. Times photo Natalie Brittan
“There’s everything you could want in one little box and it’s a really cool, really special thing for the kids.” The volunteers get right into the spirit of Christmas, says Mr Green. “We have a lot of fun. It’s like a big party atmosphere where people get dressed up in Santa hats and reindeer antlers.” Domestic violence response coordinator constable Brandon McCarthy will be all hands on deck this year with a team of about 20 officers. “It helps us immensely. What the community does for the victims that we deal with is outstanding.” Mr McCarthy says the project continues to exceed all expectations and has grown since the relationship with Elim began three years ago.
“It’s amazing what the volunteers can do with the help of these guys here controlling the chaos,” he says with a smile. The feedback and stories the volunteers receive in return are priceless, says Mr Green. “One man was going to take his family to the City Mission for Christmas lunch and the box turned up and they were so grateful to have Christmas lunch at home. “We’re doing it for the kids. We can’t wait to see their faces when the boxes turn up.” The Christmas Box project is staged from 9am-midday on Saturday, December 19, at Elim Christian Centre, 159 Botany Road. People keen to get involved can turn up on the day and help pack boxes.

Xmas appeal calls for more presents
Fund supports local not-for-profits In true Christmas spirit, FreshChoice Half Moon Bay donated a tidy $1000 in November to local community organisations.
As Christmas comes closer, south-east residents are being asked to dig deeper for a Christmas gift appeal.
Giving back to the community is important to the supermarket co-owner operators Chris Harris and Juliet Monaghan. The November round of donations went to Camp Quality for the children’s summer camp and Communicare Pakuranga, which gives older people companionship and assistance. Not forgetting the sports enthusiasts, FreshChoice also financially supported Macleans College rowing squad and the U15 Girls Touch Rugby from Counties Manukau
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal and charity partner The Salvation Army are asking for a dramatic lift in gifts donated to meet the national 50,000 target. Gifts donated at the Kmart Botany store will be distributed to local families and individuals struggling financially by The Salvation Army. Mat Badger of the East Auckland Corp says some families go into debt to provide for Christmas, which becomes a big problem in the New Year and the months that follow. In 2015, the organisation will assist more than 35,000 families, including 68,000 children through its various services. “Many families we work with have complicated debt issues that leave them little for Christmas gifts and food. This is a very stressful time with additional costs while children are on school holidays and knowing that back-to-school expenses are on the near horizon. “Through Kmart’s Wishing Tree Appeal, The Salvation Army can minimise these pressures by not only providing gifts,
Celebrating 21 years, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, in partnership with The Salvation Army, has collected 420,000 gifts in its New Zealand tenure, benefitting those who might otherwise go without on Christmas Day.

Touch Association. The Howick/ Pakuranga Girl Guiding also had their good deeds rewarded with a donation. Each month, FreshChoice Half Moon Bay receives several applications from community organisations asking for a little financial assistance. Mr Harris and Ms Monaghan enjoy supporting their community and when local organisations approach FreshChoice for support, it’s challenging deciding where the funds will go. It’s also a lot of fun making someone’s day with a donation.
Our colourful Christmas tree (at the Polish Heritage Trust Museum) is up, the decorations are all handmade and we have been playing Polish Christmas carols. You are warmly invited to a Christmas Crafts: Traditions and Decorations workshop, running on December 20, 2pm to 4pm, $8 per person. Bookings are preferred please for the workshops so I can be sure to have enough supplies. We are presenting
To participate in the appeal, place an unwrapped gift under any Wishing Tree located within a Kmart store, including a completed gift tag outlining the gender and age group of the recipient. Alternatively, collect a bauble from the tree and scan it at the checkout to make a monetary contribution. Gifts do not need to be purchased from Kmart, but they must be new or handcrafted and unwrapped.

League club shows Hanukkah – The it cares for seniors festival of lights By Marianne Kelly
While we are all wrapped up in the Christmas spirit this season, we mustn’t forget that other cultures and religions may celebrate Christmas a little differently, or not at all.
A long-standing relationship between the Pakuranga Senior Citizens and Rugby League clubs has come full circle and was celebrated with a special Christmas dinner for the seniors last week. The senior’s club was formed in 1967 and at one time, its membership rose to more than 100. In those days much of Pakuranga was still farmland, and the newly established Senior Citizens and Rugby League clubs shared the local community hall. However, the seniors started a building fund when they decided they would like to have their own facilities. When they approached the then Manukau City Council mayor Sir Barry Curtis for assistance, he told them the council was going to build a community centre and that the seniors could have use of the facilities as a home base for free. “In good faith we took that on,” says the Senior Citizens Club president John Bullen. In 2001, the Fisher Gallery in Reeves Road was amalgamated with the new Pakuranga Community and Cultural Centre, which would be known as Te Tuhi, and the seniors moved in for their weekly meetings. But when
Hanukkah can often be thought of as the Jewish version of Christmas as it occurs around the same time however, it actually celebrates something completely different. Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of lights, remembering the rededication of the second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. This happened in 160BC, before Jesus was born.

We said, ‘but we have never paid rent’,” Mr Bullen says.
paying the rent,” she says. “We said they were more than welcome. We have got to look after our seniors.”
They were charged $30 an hour for five hours, which amounted to a weekly bill of $150 to $200. “We had to pay rent until we went broke and this time last year were about to fold up,” he says.
A full circle has been turned, Mr Bullen says. Last week, Ms Mana and four Rugby League Club members decorated the club rooms at Ti Rakau Park Reserve and put on a free midday Christmas dinner for the seniors.
Enter Pakuranga Rugby League Club manager Rawina Mana, who said “you’re welcome here. After all these years, they were having difficulty
“We’ve been here for the last 12 months and would like to publicly extend a big thank you to Rawina and the club for looking after us.”
Hanukkah lasts for eight days and starts on the 25th of Kislev, the month in the Jewish calendar that occurs at about the same time as December. Because the Jewish calendar is lunar (it uses the moon for its dates), Kislev can happen from late November to late December. During Hanukkah, on each of the eight nights, a candle is lit
in a special menorah called a ‘hanukkiyah’. There is a special ninth candle called the ‘shammash’, or servant candle, which is used to light all the other candles. The shammash is often in the centre of the other candles and has a higher position. A special blessing, thanking God, is said before or after lighting the candles, and a special Jewish hymn is often sung. The menorah is put in the front window of houses so people passing can see the lights and remember the story of Hanukkah. Hanukkah is also a time for giving and receiving presents and gifts, and are often given on each night. Lots of games are played during the time of Hanukkah, and food fried in oil is traditionally eaten. Favourites are ‘latkes’ (potato pancakes) and ‘sufganiyot’ (deep fried doughnuts) that are then filled with jam/jelly and sprinkled with sugar.

Times Newspapers Christmas Supplement — 5
Rest and recycle this summer Over Christmas and during summer many of us are at the beach, enjoying entertainment or just relaxing with families and friends. New Zealanders generate an estimated 30 per cent more waste over the summer holidays and in seaside areas, it’s an additional 400 per cent and most of it can be recycled if people put it into the recycling bin rather than the rubbish bin. The amount of glass recycled actually doubles in January, but sales of glass and cans go up three times over normal levels so let’s recycle it all. If you are enjoying a takeaway pizza, recycle these boxes, too. And if you are in Auckland, you can recycle all your soft plastic bags – that includes chip packets, confectionery and biscuit wrap; bread bags, frozen food, pasta and rice bags; toilet paper packaging and the plastic courier packs around your parcels this Christmas. 12 Days to a Greener Summer Day 1 Recycling collection times may be different so make a note of the new time. We consume three times more bottles and cans over the holidays and in seaside areas, an additional 400%.
Where’s Santa Claus? As the countdown begins, it’s going to be tough to visit all the festive attractions we have in this lovely part of town.
Day 2 In most regions you can recycle paper, glass, metals. Hard plastics one and two (and in some places, one to seven).
Remember you can recycle your pizza boxes as long as you empty them first. About 26 million boxes a year are needlessly landfilled.
Day 3 Look for the Love NZ recycling bins in your area. There are now over 2000 Love NZ recycling bins. They are on high streets, shopping malls, airports and ferry terminals, BP’s Wild Bean Cafés, Rainbow’s End and the Skyline Luges.
Day 8 Reuse or recycle your Christmas cards. Around 60 million Christmas cards are sent. Your paper collector will recycle your old Christmas cards.
Day 4 Recycle more packaging more often. New Zealanders consume over 700,000 tonnes of packaging every year, but we recycle just over half of it. Day 5 Reuse. Use a reusable shopping bag when you go out shopping and use a KeepCup. Every year, New Zealanders consume 284 million coffee cups. Day 6 Do the Plastic Scrunch Test! A new drop off recycling programme has started in Auckland - 4.3 million plastic bags are thrown away every day.
That’s why we’ve compiled a handy list of where the burly man in red will be this month as well as where the lights will be twinkling.

Santa coming to Burswood
Easy ways to stay healthy over Christmas ■■ Stay active Christmas is a great time to catch up with family and friends and have a break from our busy dayto-day routines. Don’t feel guilty about ditching the gym, instead get together with a group of friends to do a hike or bush walk and enjoy the warmer weather while socialising at the same time. Aim for a 30-minute walk or run most days. This can be done early in the morning or even later in the evening.
By Marianne Kelly
Santa and his elves will return to Burswood for the community’s annual Christmas in the park celebration. The event, organised by the East City Wesleyan Church, has become an established must-do for the Burswood community which is comprised of 550 houses. About 200 people usually attend, says one of the organisers, Lee Warmington, many not necessarily members of the church congregation and some from surrounding suburbs.
■■ Treat yourself, but don’t overdo it! Everyone deserves a treat over Christmastime, especially with all the delicious festive delights, but moderation is key. It’s never a good feeling when you know you ate a little bit too much sweet food and are left feeling bloated and sick. Instead pick one or two things you really want to try instead of eating everything.
Activities will include children’s nativity plays put on by two children’s groups, one made up of three to 11-year-olds and the other 11 to 18-year-olds.
A colouring-in competition comes with a chance to win a prize and Santa and his elves will lead a free lolly scramble. The event, which is supported by the Howick Local Board, is at 5.30 to
NATIVITY PLAY: Key players at Burswood will be, rear from left, Luke Sidwell (Joseph), Hannah Richardson (angel); front from left, Jack Richardson (shepherd), Anna Sidwell (Mary), Robin Warmington (donkey), Sage Warmington (sheep). 7.30pm on December 20 at Burswood Park, Burswood Drive. In the event of rain, activities will be shifted to the East City Wesleyan Church Centre
at 219 Burswood Drive. For more information is online at www.ecw.org. nz, phone 273-9044 or email office@ ecw.org.nz.

■■ Stay hydrated Because we celebrate Christmas in summer in New Zealand, it is an important time to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated in the warmer weather. It is a good idea to drink a glass of water in between all those fancy festive drinks and with a meal to help stop bloating and improve digestion. Peppermint or chamomile tea are also great to drink if you are feeling sick from eating too much as they aid digestion and prevent nausea or upset stomachs.

The Christmas spending season has started strongly across the country with both the volume of transactions on the Paymark network increasing by 8.5 per cent versus last year, but also the value of those transactions increasing by seven per cent.
continues in the future.”
Paymark is New Zealand’s leading electronic payments company with over 100,000 terminals, covering 75 per cent of the New Zealand retail landscape. Paymark processes on average 60 transactions every second of the day. Paymark CEO Mark Rushworth says the volume of traffic suggests the early rise in volumes bodes well for the Christmas retail season.
However, the slowest growth was experienced in Waikato, West Coast and Taranaki regions - all strong dairy regions. “Whether this means dairy price fluctuations are hitting the retail market in those areas or not remains to be seen but certainly in comparison with the rest of the country growth is noticeably lower, and in Taranaki we see a decline in year on year value with only a modest growth (half a per cent) in terms of volume.”
“Traditionally, Kiwis have waited until a little later in the month to do their Christmas shopping but the advent of online retail means we’re seeing traffic volumes increase a little earlier than has been the case in the past. It will be interesting to see if that trend

Auckland and Northland are the strongest regions but the fastest growth is seen across the smaller regions - Marlborough, Otago, Southland and Gisborne in particular.
Breaking down the figures by market sector, growth is strongest in liquor (+9.4 per cent), fast food (+14.9 per cent), clothing and footwear (+9.2 per cent), furniture and hardware
(+10.6 per cent), recreational (+11.6 per cent), accommodation (+18.6%), restaurantsand cafes (+12.2 per cent) and hairdressers (+15.0 per cent). Conversely, transactions were down among farm supply (-12.0 per cent), travel (-1.3 per cent) and fuel (-3.8 per cent). Credit card growth remains strong at +8.4 per cent, in part reflecting the usage patterns inherent at this time of year. “The vast bulk of New Zealand’s retail transactions travel across Paymark’s network ,so we have a good view of the retail sector,” says Rushworth. “While the figures don’t replace the Statistics NZ retail sales figures, they are a good proxy for spending patterns in New Zealand, something that’s of great value to retailers at this busy time of year.”

Roast turkey with garlic, sage and lemon
Travelling this
? s a m t s i r h C
Serves 6-8 Hands-On Time 15 min Total Time 4 hrs
Ingredients
Approx 5.5kg turkey, giblets removed 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley kitchen string (optional) 4 small carrots, cut into quarters lengthwise 2 stalks celery, cut into 3-inchlong strips 2 medium yellow onions, cut into wedges 7 tablespoons olive oil kosher salt and pepper 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth 3 large cloves garlic, finely chopped ¼ cup fresh sage, finely chopped 1 lemon, zest grated and juice squeezed
Okay, not everyone likes turkey, with many complaining it’s too dry. Like chicken, it’s all in the cooking. And they can be picked up for reasonable prices. I saw a frozen one at the supermarket last week for $45. This is a simple recipe. Of course, you can alter it to suit. Heat oven to 220C.
Place the carrots, celery and onions in a metal roasting pan. Transfer the turkey to a wire rack and place it on top of the vegetables. Finely chop the remaining 1/2 bunch parsley. In a small bowl, combine
the parsley with the garlic, sage, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Carefully slide your fingers under the skin of the turkey breast and thighs to loosen it. Stuff the herb mixture under the skin. Drizzle the skin with the remaining 6 tablespoons oil and, using your fingers, spread it on evenly. Season with 1 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Roast the turkey
uncovered until browned, 30 to 45 minutes.
Have some delicious kai before you fly!
Add the broth to the pan. Cover the turkey loosely with foil. Reduce oven temperature to 350F. Roast until a thermometer inserted in a thigh registers around 75 C, about 2 hours. Let the turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. Reserve the pan drippings and vegetables for the gravy. Source: realsimple.com

Method
Pat the turkey dry with paper towels. Place the wings underneath the body. Place the 1/2 bunch of parsley in the cavity. If you like a tidy-looking bird, tie the drumsticks together using the kitchen string.

Extra special Christmas trees
“While the pine and pohutukawa take centre-stage in New Zealand this time of year, avocado and moringa trees are top of the Christmas list in Zambia,” says ChildFund New Zealand CEO Paul Brown. “These trees are drought-resistant, fast-growing and bring the promise of nutritious food for generations to come. They will help children and their families grow healthy and more promising futures for themselves, free from malnutrition and the cycle of poverty.” Priced at just $18, ChildFund’s Gifts that Grow ‘Special Christmas trees’ gift includes an avocado tree for bounties of energy-dense fruit and a moringa tree, a superfood plant also known as the ‘miracle tree’. In addition to the nutrient-rich fruit of the avocado, almost every part of the miraculous moringa tree is edible. The leaves, seeds, flowers and even stems can be consumed in a number of tasty ways and every piece is packed full of high-quality vitamins, amino-acids, antioxidants and protein. “The leaves and flowers can be eaten as salads, the stems cooked like vegetables, or the seeds roasted and eaten like peanuts or used as a spice. Dried leaves and seeds are also used to make a longlasting powder, which is sprinkled on otherwise nutrient-poor foods to ensure children are getting what their growing bodies need year-round.” Moringa and avocado trees are already growing well in a ChildFund community in nearby Kenya. The charity is hoping to gift 1700 trees to start a similar initiative in Zambia to benefit children and their families for generations to come.
How Gifts that Grow works
Purchasing a Gifts that Grow is a great way to add real meaning to Christmas shopping, whether it’s ‘just because’ or as a gift for that hard-to-buy-for loved one. “Our commitment to gift-givers is that the items they choose will help children, families and communities grow in health, education and independence. The gifts on offer are focused on building sustainable futures and are what communities themselves have identified as needing most.” Buyers can rest assured the gift bought is delivered directly to children and their families in the nominated ChildFund project. In the case more money is raised than needed for the chosen gift, the
donation will be used for a similar gift that is still needed.

Pakuranga College recently played host to education leaders from the UK, Australia, South Africa and the United States
N
ew Zealand hosted the 12th Global Education Leaders’ Partnership (GELP) event for education system leaders from November 22-24 in Auckland, followed by visits to sites of education excellence that cover the full range of education provision in the NZ education system. Pakuranga College was one of them. Schools were invited to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Education demonstrating how they epitomise exemplary practice using the new ERO best practice indicators and only a few were selected to host the visitors. The Global Education Lead-
ers’ Partnership sets out to transform education, effectively and sustainably, at local, national and global levels. It envisages education systems that equip every learner with the skills, expertise and knowledge to survive and thrive in the 21st century. The partnership is a community of thought leaders and consultants from world-class organisations, collaborating in a global community with teams of key system education leaders. They are seriously committed both to transforming education in practice and to developing the personal skills they need to lead the changes required.
At the heart of GELP’s vision is the fostering of new pedagogies, curricula and assessment methods that enable every student to develop higher order capabilities. For this to be realised, appropriate technology, leadership, professional development, policies and governance also have to be in place. Principal Michael Williams who is a member of the Ministry of Education Professional Learning & Development Advisory Group said: “This is a rare opportunity to exchange ideas from across the world about how to increase student engagement and achievement through effective teaching and learning.”

I am a 13-year-old Howick College student, and I feel strongly that the New Zealand flag needs to change. I believe that our flag needs to represent our future and not the past. I think New Zealand needs to be modern but still needs to show our Maori heritage. I believe we should show our national cultural identity. While England is important to New Zealand, we are now a multi-cultural country and the flag needs to represent this. We should explain our country even more and who we are. I want the flag to have a fern symbol because it represents our bond to nature and our strong sports heritage, and it’s a reminder to keep looking after our environment. Leila Hamidova

In my experience, the culture at the SPCA has changed dramatically in the last few years. I, and many others, no longer believe or trust in their ability to respond to the public’s reporting of animal abuse and neglect. Their constant response is that “the law allows this”, is a cop-out and an excuse for allowing levels of neglect that are so bad that by the time they act, if they ever do, the animals’ hope of recovery are very poor. My contact with the SPCA has never resulted in an animal being helped. In my experience, case numbers and addresses have been lost, the descriptions of animals go missing, [there are] not enough inspectors or inspectors away, and a lack of interest, empathy and help from people. I have felt like a nuisance caller when I try to find out what has happened. I know the law is part of the problem but if the SPCA can no longer protect the animals, shouldn’t they be screaming that from the rooftops. Shouldn’t they be writing to the papers, publishing photos and actively fighting for the rights of the animals. They are the only group who can legally uplift an animal who is neglected or abused and if they can’t or won’t, I think the public should know because animals are suffering and it just isn’t right.
Who is the SPCA accountable to? Who is checking that they are competent? I think there needs to be an investigation. There don’t seem to be enough well-trained inspectors to ensure that animals have the basics – food, water, shelter, exercise and some sort of care. Isn’t this the role of the SPCA? If you want to make a difference, please go online and sign The Chained Dogs Awareness petition. This is a group of people who go out when no one else will, to walk these dogs. Well done Edgewater
For the last two years, Gulf Views Rest Home has been fortunate enough to have six (tall) Year 10 lads from Edgewater College assist with putting up the Christmas decorations throughout the home. On both occasions the students were polite, respectful and willingly carried out the tasks assigned to them. When often there is some negativity around our young people, it is a pleasure to acknowledge these fine young people publicly and give them an enormous thank you from both the residents and staff. Sue Milton Nurse manager Gulf Views Rest Home
Reporters creating the news
I recently made a complaint to the Broadcasting Complaint Commission. The gist was that there is a deterioration in the standard of news reporting. It is becoming fashionable for the news reporting media to create news instead of reporting it. We now have Heather du Plessis-Allan apparently impersonating a police officer to obtain a firearm. If she is found guilty, I trust she will spend 10 years in jail as any other citizen would. A copy of this is being sent to the Police Commissioner. John Champion Mellons Bay

Oh! what an evening at the Howick RSA for a combined birthday celebration, on
The lights on Stockade Hill are superb
As I am unsure who is responsible for the wonderful tree of lights on Stockade Hill, I would appreciate it if your newspaper would publish my letter of appreciation. We have always enjoyed the Christmas tree on Stockade Hill, but this year it is truly superb. With the white lights entwined around the trunk and the big bauble lights hanging off the branches, it is a real work of art, visible for miles around and a joy to behold. It is a real delight to drive towards Howick at night and see it lighting up the sky. So, many thanks to whoever is responsible – you have provided us all with a wonderful visual treat. M Browning
Country music on web
Recently, our club Eastern Districts Country Music Club, operating from the War Memorial Hall at Bucklands Beach on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 10pm, had two new members, Trina and Ross Ballantyne. They organised our club website www.easterndistrictscountrymusicclub.org.nz. They asked me if I could give them information of the history of our club. I spent three wonderful hours giving what I knew over 41 years of our club. Trina and Ross got the website going with this information and the news has spread. Our Howick club has a wonderful record of top performers in NZ country music. In the New Year, we welcome new members and singers when we start on Wednesday, February 3, at 7pm. An Epic tale brewing By Natalie Brittan
W
hen Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in cinemas today, one avid fan fancies local audiences’ taste buds will be awakened by flavours of his home-grown brew. As Epic Beer celebrates its 10th anniversary, the craft beer brand with a global following marks its debut in Howick’s Monterey Cinemas and Corner Bar. It’s also a homecoming for the business that first began fermenting in the old Cock & Bull brewery in Ti Rakau Drive, Burswood on December 14, 2005. Before that, there was master brewer and marketing mastermind, Luke Nicholas. The Dannemora man says his journey began with a heady concoction of tradition and necessity. “It came off the back of growing up with a grandfather who home brewed. You home brew while you’re at university because you can make beer cheap.” In 1991, on a university exchange in California, USA, Luke got his first taste of first craft beer coming home with new ‘beer goggles’. Graduating with a commerce and management degree, the former Macleans College student began working in international exports. Romance was soon kindled and Luke brought home an American bride before heading back to the States in 1995 where he “became obsessed with brewing”. A year later, the couple returned home to Aotearoa and after “bugging” management at the still-new Cock & Bull, Luke landed a job as assistant brewer leading to head brewer. In 1999, he was crowned supreme champion at the inaugural New Zealand International Beer Awards, the first of more than a dozen accolades from New Zealand and abroad.
CHEERS: Champion brewer Luke Nicholas with his creations at Epic Beer’s Penrose warehouse. Times photo Natalie Brittan
“My job was to ensure we don’t run out of beer, win awards and be profitable,” he says. The father of two admits he struggled with making profit before recognising the answer was to create a bottled
brand which was, at the time, dominated by larger breweries. Incidentally, Cock & Bull wanted to invest in its successful chain of pubs (since renamed to Doolan Brothers), so Luke decided it was prime time to purchase the brewing division of the company and launch Epic Beer. With names such as Hop Zombie, Awakening Pils, Armageddon IPA and The Observer, the crafty businessman has no shortage of inspiration, referencing everything from pop culture to quantum physics. Those who read between the sips will discover Schrodinger’s cat, Heisenberg (Walter White’s alter ego from Breaking Bad), a glow in the dark label, a philosophical line from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, bacon-flavoured beer as well as a tribute to the Dunedin Sound’s Flying Nun Records. Naturally, having a few beers helps stimulate the creative juices. “I try and keep it light and fun but at the same time a bit intellectual for people who want to think about the beer because the flavours are very intense and the aroma’s big,” Luke says. “It has to be because the beer’s epic so you have to deliver epic flavour.”
Lounging at The Lounge The Lounge in Howick hosted the annual Times Christmas Party last week providing an incredible Christmas dinner and decadent dessert. We were spoiled for choice with traditional Christmas ham, chicken and hot-smoked salmon. These were matched with buttery potatoes and
a number of exquisite salads. For those who had room left, there was chocolate brownie, lemon tart, berries, and an impressive cheese board for dessert. The Lounge provided a wonderful atmosphere to celebrate the festive season and it certainly got everyone into the Christmas spirit.

Build consents surging vious year. The figures are the latest in a Statistics New Zealand series indicating the pace of Auckland’s new house build rate. The National Construction Pipeline Report has projected that an extra 80,000 new homes will be built in the six years to 2020, compared with 30,000 in the preceding six years. The Household Labour Force Survey shows the number of people employed in Auckland’s construction industry is up from 45,000 to 75,000 over the past
three years. Dr Smith says the latest Housing Accord Monitoring Report shows the target at the two-year mark of the Accord has been reached. “We also have in place initiatives to constrain building materials costs, rein in development contributions, cut compliance costs and invest in improved sector productivity,” Dr Smith says. The new $435 million HomeStart support package, which came into effect last April, will help 90,000 people into homeownership
over the next five years. “We need to keep the foot on the accelerator to ensure we support this positive momentum,” he says. The next steps in the Government’s programme include advancing new housing on Crown-owned land in Auckland, supporting the Auckland Council in completion of the new Auckland Unitary Plan, and reform of the Resource Management Act to address the long-term issues affecting housing supply and affordability.

ith the number of building consents at an 11-year high, Building and Housing minister Dr Nick Smith says strong momentum is underway for Auckland’s new house build rate. Consents issued for Auckland in the year to last October were 8935, the highest in any year to October since 2004. The 805 consents issued for Auckland in October were up 25 per cent on September and up 36 per cent on the same time the pre-
A garden spade for every task to perform several gardening chores – digging holes for planting seedlings, digging up roots, dividing perennials, turning the soil and transporting materials, such as gravel, compost, soil and mulch. It’s a practical tool that will get a lot of use. The other recommended spade is the trowel. This mini spade is useful for planting in flowerbeds as well as in pots. It’s used throughout the year for exterior and interior plants.
The third tool to buy, if possible, is the square spade. Although it’s not as generally useful as a round blade, the square shape is more efficient when the time comes to divide perennials. That’s because it cuts the roots instead of tearing them, as a rounded spade would. Regardless of which gardening tool you’re looking for, take the time to choose the right one before buying it. You need to feel comfortable when handling it, so imitate the movements you’ll make when gardening, and

It’s important to know which spade should be used for digging earth or dividing perennials, also to know what a trowel is. Gardening spades take up huge areas of display space in garden centres. They may be round or square, wide or narrow, and amateur gardeners often find it difficult to choose the right one. Gardeners need at least two spades, but if possible, buy three. The first one is the indispensable round spade. Spades with a rounded blade are used

Inefficient appliances are costly The true price of some appliances isn’t on their price tag because of the hundreds of dollars lost because of inefficiencies. Christian Hoerning from the EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) Energywise says a refrigerator/ freezer model that doesn’t have an ‘Energy Star’ label could cost $900 more in running costs over its lifetime. Household appliances, such as washing machines and fridge freezers are big ticket items and running them makes up about 40 per cent of the average household electricity bill. Most people keep whiteware, such as fridge freezers and washing machines, for up to 15 years, so it’s worth choosing energy efficient models, he says. The blue ‘Energy Star’ is a quick and easy way to identify energy efficient products and only appears on the top 25 per cent of models for most product groups. “This consumer-friendly guide to energy efficiency is an internationally recognised, voluntary label that manufacturers are increasingly using,” Christian says. “New Zealanders bought more than 400,000 ‘Energy Star’ approved products in the year to March 2014, 18 per cent more than the previous year.” Shoppers can also use the Energy Rating Label found on appliances to compare the energy efficiency of similar appliances in the store. The number of stars on the label represents how most energy efficient the appliance is. “At home it’s worth thinking about the way your household uses appliances,” Christian says. Appliances left on at the wall are sucking up low levels of electricity because they are on standby. Turning them off at the wall when not in use could save a household about $100 a year. Major culprits are home entertainment appliances, such as stereos, game consoles and computer equipment. Plug them all into multi-plug boards so they can all be turned off properly at the same time. Turning off washing machines and dryers at the wall will also save power. EECA is the Crown agency that encourages, supports and promotes energy efficiency and conservation and the use of renewable energy in New Zealand. The EnergyWise website is at www. energywise.govt.nz.

Sales drop but prices continuing to rise N
umbers of residential dwellings sold in Eastern Beaches are down 22 per cent in November compared with the same time last year, following the Auckland region-wide trend showing a 15 per cent drop, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says the Auckland market continues to be challenged by the lack of supply, evident in the low number of sales for November and an increase, once again, in the median price. The Eastern Beaches median price is up 16 per cent in November to $930,000 from $801,500 the same time last year. Other influences on the market, Ms Milne says, are the new IRD requirements, bank account charges and revised LVR restrictions. “Understandably, this has slowed down some purchase
decisions while the implications of the new rules are absorbed, with a fall off in auction clearances the most prominent outworking of this,” she says. “The situation should revert as the market adjusts to the new operating environment and more restrictions.” QV homevalue registered valuer James Wilson says recent measures introduced by the Government and the Reserve Bank to address house price inflation could be one of the factors causing a ‘softening’ effect that is being felt in the Auckland market for the first time in many months. “Investors are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach as they want to see how the market reacts to the recent measures and the decrease in rental yields achievable in the city also appears to be further fuelling the more cautious mentality prevalent among

Brendon Skipper, the website chief executive says, it’s significant that the areas where asking prices are at record highs are all “within striking distance of urban Auckland”. “There have been strong indications over recent months that Aucklanders are house hunting further afield, which is helping to raise the expectations of sellers in these neighbouring regions.”
buyers,” he says. “The number of houses being sold at auction continues to be well down on earlier this year, with some agencies reporting clearance rates as low as 30 per cent when they had been regularly around 85 per cent.” Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel regions reached record high average asking prices in November, according to Realestate.co.nz data.

Super greed hurts players hard F
aced with a horrendously unfair Super Rugby draw loaded in favour of South African franchises, New Zealand is in danger of losing more players to big paying French and British clubs. With the Kings returning to the championship and the Los Jaguares (Argentina) and Sunwolves (Japan) making their debut, there will be 18 teams next year. With 23 Pumas in the Los Jaguares squad, expect them to be a major force following Argentina’s impressive showing at the World Cup. However there are reports the Sunwolves are struggling to put a team together and players and staff from the cash strapped Port Elizabeth based Kings claim they have not been paid for four months. The Stormers, Bulls and Chee-
Agnew’s Angle tahs will play the Sunwolves twice and are not required to play any NZ team in the playoffs whereas the Kiwi teams play fellow NZ teams six times over 15 rounds of pool play. On top of that the Chiefs and champion Highlanders will be expected to fly 11 hours to Argentina via Brazil after playing in South Africa. On their return home the Chiefs will play the Force whereas the Highlanders will face the Chiefs in their final round clash. For weary All Blacks who face home and away games later in
the season against Argentina, South Africa and Australia the extra travel involved in the Super Rugby competition is daunting. In their eagerness to expand exposure and increased revenue by embracing franchises from Argentina and Japan, Sanzar administrators don’t appear to have given much consideration to player welfare. If the players feel unfairly burdened and lose their enjoyment, the All Black jersey will lose its lustre and more will chase the big money in France and Britain earlier than they would normally do so. The lure is not only the money but involves a far less arduous travel itinerary. Meanwhile a seventh at the Cape Town tournament shows just how much the NZ Sevens team have suffered after being
ravaged by injuries. Having lost to Canada and three times in as many games against the United States, coach Gordon Tietjens needs reinforcements. Although delighted to have been able to add Sonny Bill Williams, Liam Messam, Akira Ioane and Ardie Savea to his Rio Olympics squad, Tietjens would have been disappointed Beauden Barrett was unavailable. Barrett’s blistering speed would have made him a sevens sensation, as would that of league’s supreme stepper, Shaun Johnson, whose return to the Warriors is eagerly anticipated after suffering a bad ankle injury last year. With Dan Carter retired from international rugby, Barrett covets the All Black No 10 jersey next year in
the knowledge competition from Aaron Cruden and Lima Sopoaga will be fierce. Although Sopoaga wasn’t chosen for the World Cup it was nice to see him recently named New Zealand Super Rugby player of the year, just as it was to have Ma’a Nonu named our Rugby Player of the Year. While few would argue Carter made a huge contribution to the All Blacks success in the World Cup playoffs culminating in him being named International Player of the Year, Nonu was more consistent both at Super and test level throughout 2015. But why bother splitting hairs between two champions who have done their country proud over such a long period of time? Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Black belt for Fooks By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER
M
ike Fooks from Sunnyhills has achieved a feat no one else in east Auckland has achieved. After starting in 2004, 11 years later Fooks has earned a black belt, one of the highest rankings, in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). While in traditional martial arts a black belt can be earned in three years, BJJ in stark contrast can take 10 to 15 years to earn the same ranking. While many other martial arts have been “watered down” over time, Fooks says BJJ has managed to hold on to the currency of the rank. “It’s a real point of pride with BJJ that when somebody gets a high rank, there’s no discussion about ‘are they a good brown belt or a not so good brown belt?’ If you’ve got that rank, it really does mean something,” he says. When Fooks first discovered BJJ in 2001, while training and teaching Aikido, there wasn’t a lot of BJJ in New Zealand at the time. After being involved in online discussion boards, Fooks was hooked by the realism of this
martial art. “They didn’t get involved in theoretical debate, they just said ‘I will show you what works’. “They had this real strong conviction which even I, I think I was secondary black belt in Aikido at that point, didn’t feel I had that same sense of strong conviction or confidence,” he says. Inspired by his Australian Coach John Will, Fooks started passing on his style of teaching in his own garage. Eventually he moved on to recreation centres and scout halls until the birth of his own club, Ground Control, in East Tamaki. Although Fooks usually picks up one or two gold medals a year at the Australasian Championships, he does not focus his teaching around competitions. “We here tend to have the view that we compete to make our BJJ better rather than we try to make our BJJ better to compete. “Competition is an aspect of BJJ but it’s not all there is to it,” he says.
Ground Control has still produced many successful BJJ champions, two of whom recently graded to brown belts, which, according to Fooks, “is a rare accomplishment in itself”.
DENTURE CLEAN
Start the new year off with a bright fresh smile!
Book your appointment for next year before 23 December and pay only $50 Receive a free care package including denture brush, toothpaste and denture soak, and a free examination! Dentures, like natural teeth, need regular professional care... Cleaning done at home every day is important but it cannot prevent deposits forming: bacterial plaque; stubborn tartar; stains caused by foodstuffs (like tea, coffee, red wine and medicines); and nicotine build up. These deposits harden and trap contamination. The denture loses its lustre and becomes marked, unattractive and prone to germs and bacteria. This can lead to: sour taste; bad breath; sore spots; chronic and painful gingivitis; allergic reactions; and loss of denture retention.
JH10740
We put your denture through an intense cleaning process, that should be carried out three-to-four times a year, simplifying your daily cleaning and keeping you smiling.

Howick College earn Condors sevens title Howick College’s under 15 Sevens team had a run of success at the national Condors Sevens tournament this month.
