omen should not be using Mellons Bay Beach alone, a local police inspector says, following reports late last week of men doing indecent acts while watching female beach users. Inspector Jared Pirret’s recommendation comes after police received two calls of a similar nature last Thursday afternoon regarding possibly two different males doing an indecent act in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach. Both incidents occurred at approximately 4pm and were reported by the victims to the police a short time later. “On both occasions when confronted by the victims the male did not attempt to touch or talk to the victims and there was no attempt to abduct or coerce the victim in any way,” Mr Pirret said. Police patrolled the area that afternoon but were unable to locate either male and are now conducting mobile patrols and increasing visibility in Mellons Bay. The two schools in the area are aware of the reports. A Macleans College spokesman said the school had been made aware through social media that there had been a male acting suspiciously in the area. “We have heard that he has been seen at Howick Beach, Macleans Reserve (flying fox) and Mellons Bay. Nothing has occurred at Macleans College.” The spokesman said the school had made contact with the local police and had left the situation with them. Principal of Mellons Bay School Judy Brown said she had informed the school community of the reported incidents. Inspector Pirret said during both incidents last Thursday afternoon, the male was observed by female beach users attempting to hide behind rocks or bushes while carrying out “an indecent act”. He said that it is unfortunately a “seasonal trend” in which police see that type of offending occurring in the warmer weather and with more people using the beaches. Mr Pirret said it was unlikely that the same offender was responsible for both incidents as the descriptions supplied by the victims were ➤ Turn to Page 3 very different.

ocal churches aim to deliver 850 food boxes to families in need this Christmas. It’s making a tangible difference for families who need it the most, and letting them know someone cares. That’s the heart behind Elim Church’s Christmas Box project, which will see hundreds of people impacted by the kindness of strangers when 750 food boxes are given away on December 17. The initiative started in 2004 and has received backing from local businesses including Pak’n’Save Botany and Sanitarium. Last year, 650 boxes were given away to families who have had a tough year. More than 400 of these went to families identified by Counties Manukau East Police as part of its victim support programme. Events co-ordinator Stephany Krishna says it’s all about serving the community, and

The High Court at Stockade Hill Auckland will hear the views Howick Ratepayers and Residents $18,782 Association’s (HRRA) TIMES APPEAL case this week. The HRRA has lodged appeals in the Environment and High Courts against Auckland Council in an attempt to stop changes that would allow multiple 12-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Park Hill roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill, blocking views over the Hauraki Gulf from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. The changes came about through the Auckland Unitary Plan. HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth said the association’s barrister will declare the up-zoning illegal in the High Court this week. Mrs Mackereth said the HRRA still needs help. “We know Howickians are furious about the possibility of a wall of self same apartments on the skyline opposite Stockade Hill. What will it take to preserve our magic views?” The appeal total this week is $18,782 but Mrs Mackereth said it has fallen well-short of what is needed. Methamphetamine, commonly known as P in New Zealand, is also known as crystal meth, speed, ice, yaba or crank and is a toxic and addictive drug which is a powerful stimulant. Side effects include paranoia, brain damage, liver and kidney damage, skin and respiratory problems and birth defects. “Buying a home is the biggest investment one makes in a life time and finding out that the dream nest that has all of life’s hard-earned savings literally blow up in smoke is devastating,” says Faz Najmi, one of the top selling real estate agents with Ray White, Howick. “We understand the moral responsibility when we sell a house. If the new home-owner wants to be reassured that everything is 100 per cent right, we suggest they get it meth tested,” he says. If a meth-contaminated

Men seen doing ‘indecent acts’ at Mellons Bay Beach Mr Pirret said. “A good description, direction of travel, and mode of transport (vehicle or on foot) is essential to apprehending these offenders.” However, he stressed the importance of public safety. “Under no circumstances confront these males.” Meanwhile, police issued a “seasonal” warning to some local schools about safety around strangers last month. A special notice from Botany Downs Primary School to parents on November 3 asked

The Cockle Bay residents have been playing the game since 1978, originally in Gonville, Whanganui before moving up to Auckland. After making the move north, they played for Howick Croquet Club before the Pakuranga Croquet Club opened. golf. Then one day he came to pick me up and never left!” she laughed. Mr Hopkins, 91, was named the Auckland Singles Champion in his division in his first year playing in Auckland. He fondly remembers his time playing in Australia, and the friendship and helpfulness that was shown by their competitors. “The games are based on friendliness,” he said, “You have to know the friendship of the game to understand. “All the people here [at Pakuranga] are our extended family,” added Mrs Hopkins

Club manager John Wood said the game has a number of benefits, especially for those older in age. “It keeps you fit and healthy and it’s good for people who are a bit older because it’s less physical. There’s no bending like there is in bowls.” The social benefits aren’t to be understated either. “Some people wouldn’t get out of the house if it wasn’t for [croquet],” said Mr Wood. Thirty-eight years after first stepping onto the lawn, Mr Hopkins has recently retired from tournament play, but neither he nor Mrs Hopkins plan to put down their mallets

for good. Mr Hopkins and Mr Wood both played in the recent New World tournament and, although they didn’t win, they played well enough for Mr Hopkins to exit on a high. Mr Hopkins will continue to play club croquet three times a week and will still play interclub competitions. Even without tournament play, the game is still timeconsuming, but that’s just part of the fun according to Mrs Woods. “We enjoy it so we put more time into it. It takes as much time as you want it to,” she said.

The prospect of an eastern light rail, however, was not one of the Minister’s favoured options. “It’s problematic,” he says. “We have no sense of what it will really cost ... and once you start with light rail, it doesn’t stop, because you’ve got to keep going to make it successful.” He says an investigation into the overseas-based development of newer technologies such as Volvo’s autonomous buses could prove more successful, providing an equally efficient system for a considerably lower cost.

The Howick Lions Club has been working over the past eight months painting buildings at the Howick Historical Village. As well as painting at the village, they have also been involved in repairing some of the buildings under the watchful eye of local Howick historian Alan La Roche. Questions raised over handbag theft A

local shopping centre is questioning a social media report allegedly involving criminals using a vehicle to block in a shopper before making off with her handbag. A post put up overnight last Thursday on the closed Facebook group East Auckland Grapevine attracted 15 comments after a member wrote: “Please be careful when getting into your cars at Botany Town Centre. On Wednesday afternoon a car came and boxed a woman in so she could not reverse out of the car park and stole her hand bag from the passenger side.” The author of the comment did not want her name in print. However Desiree Clark, assistant centre manager at Botany Town Centre, told the Times on Friday she knows of no such occurrence. “I have seen the post and have checked with our security team and no such incident was reported in to them,” she said. “We take site security and the security of our tenants,

retailers and shoppers very seriously at Botany. We are constantly monitoring and changing our security measures as and when appropriate. This year the town centre had even increased its security presence across the site by employing additional guards and introducing additional CCTV cameras. “We take a proactive approach to all security incidents and trends and work closely with NZ Police and Botany Crimewatch Patrol to ensure that we are responding appropriately to any rising trends,” she said. A comment on the Grapevine post by Zena Maree read:

“Yes my poor young daughterin-law had someone reach through passenger window and take wallet and cell phone - was very shaken with baby in car. Not nice!!??” She told the Times the incident occurred a month ago and was at a petrol station. The nearest to the town centre is across the road. “It’s in the hands of the police - it was at petrol station. She went in to pay for the gas and as she came back over to car and got in driver’s side a guy walked past, reached in and grabbed her cell phone and wallet - was all on camera but still waiting (to hear from police).”

Only two candidate nominations have been received so far for the upcoming Botany by-election and both men ran in October. Labour’s Mark Johnson and Mike Turinsky, who campaigns under the “Practical Not Political” banner, will both have another go at securing a Botany subdivision seat on the Howick Local Board. Mr Turinsky received the fourth highest number of votes in the October election (3912) and Mr Johnson was fifth (3144). The by-election, which will be held on February 17, 2017 is expected to cost more than $100,000. It was triggered by the surprise resignation of newly-sworn in member Lucy Schwaner last month. Ms Schwaner, the wife of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, quit minutes after being sworn in at the Howick Local Board’s inauguration ceremony after narrowly losing the vote for chairmanship to David Collings, 4-5. Candidate nominations for the by-election opened last Thursday (November 24) and close at 12pm on December 22. It will be a postal vote like the October election. Auckland Council electoral officer Dale Ofsoske said if people think they have useful skills and ideas to make a contribution to their local community and can represent the needs and wants of the approximately 37,000 eligible voters in the Botany subdivision, now is their chance. A candidate seeking nomination needs to be

over the age of 18, a New Zealand citizen registered on the electoral roll, and have two electors enrolled in the Botany subdivision nominate him or her. Each nomination must be accompanied by a $200 GST inclusive deposit. National memorial spokesperson, aviation chaplain and historian, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, of Howick, said surviving spouses, siblings, and children of the victims are aging and many are asking for a national memorial to the accident, in time for the 40th anniversary. Monday was the 37th anniversary of Mt Erebus air accident – New Zealand’s worst civil disaster (November 28, 1979). All 257 on board died after the Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZK-NZP, Flight TE901 crashed into the mountain during an Antarctic sightseeing flight. It was the fourth worst aviation disaster in the world at the time, and is still the worst aviation accident in the Southern Hemisphere. Dr Waugh said the 37th anniversary gives the hundreds of families affected, and New Zealand as a nation, the opportunity to remember and reflect on a harrowing event in our history - and the opportunity to consider a long overdue national memorial. A voluntary advisory group, with Lady June Hillary as patron, is advocating for the new national memorial. The national memorial, planned to be ready by the 40th anniversary in November 2019, will be a special place for families affected by the tragedy, to gather for reflection, prayer and contemplation. It is a significant omission that there is presently no public memorial to the Erebus accident where all 257 names are gathered together. Dr Waugh said the 40th anniversary in November 2019 will be a “very suitable time” for the dedication of a new national memorial. “The Mt Erebus accident with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is still New Zealand’s worst civil disaster. New Zealand as a nation

continues to be profoundly affected by the tragedy,” Dr Waugh said, “It is a pastoral and public oversight that nothing has yet been done to establish a national memorial to the Mt Erebus accident victims, especially for the many families involved. It is now time to put the controversy of the accident to one side, and focus on a national memorial to those who died; a special place for families and for all New Zealanders to remember.” Surviving spouses, siblings, and children of the victims are aging and many are asking for a national memorial to the accident, in time for the 40th anniversary. “While some people have suggested we wait until the 50th anniversary in 2029, our advisory committee’s view is that waiting longer would be uncaring and insensitive to so many older relatives,” Dr Waugh said. “Our advisory group is in touch with many surviving spouses and siblings and other close family, who are now in their 70s and 80s, and who would very much like to have a proper national memorial to the air accident. “Such a national memorial will be a sacred set-apart place where families and others can gather on special remembering occasions.” The advisory group is in consultation with many families of those who died, the Govern-

I have sent several emails to their feedback email address with complaints regarding their staff, their boats or just their service in general. I know that I am not the only one who does so. We all receive the standard “sorry for any inconvenience” email. I travelled this ferry daily for two years approximately four years ago, and after a break I am back in the city and have been travelling daily with Fullers since April this year. I travel the 7.30am in to the CBD and the 5.15pm back to HMB 5 days per week. Surely Fullers need ferries suitable to the conditions in which they operate. I have used the AT website to recommend they install electronic notice boards similar to those used at bus stops to provide up-to-date information. This suggestion was never acknowledged and now I see that the facility to provide this type of feedback has been removed from the website. It does not surprise me that Aucklanders do not use public transport if they can help it as it is still too difficult in a city that was designed to use private cars for transport. David Waring

I am curious about the inconsistency of your reporting in the Howick and Pakuranga Times of November 3. In a report headed “Lady Trapped in Car” on page 11, the poor woman who had an incident in a Howick car park is described as an “Asian lady”. However, your front page report concerning the theft of jewellery by a caregiver at the Pakuranga Park Village retirement home makes no mention of the ethnicity of the accused, or her victims. Recently spotted were members of the Rotary Club of Somerville busy making Pohutukawa flowers and head gear as they sharpened their skills at some fancy craftwork. Like last year, different Rotary clubs in East Auckland will join hands to work on a meaningful theme and proudly walk the talk at the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday. The RSA Club in the heart of Howick were also overheard discussing an interesting theme to go with the float this year. With a theme of Clubs and Hearts they will be playing the right cards! Heading up the group will be the joker of the pack, none other than Eric Wilson, the oldest member of the club. After the good response they have been getting over the last couple of years, the Bellyful Christmas Fundraiser will be held at Mad Mikes Howick Tyres and Alignment at 33 Wellington St, Howick. Students feed homeless this Christmas

rmiston Primary School students have a plan to help the homeless this Christmas. If the efforts of three Ormiston Primary School students are anything to go by, the homeless in Manukau will be receiving more than just loose change for Christmas this year. Students Seraya Wells (eight), Kim Lim (nine) and Annia Ramirez (10) have started a food can drive for the homeless, with the goal of collecting 500 cans by Christmas. They’ve decorated the school with posters, told their friends what’s happening, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of cans from their peers, to be distributed by Salvation Army at the end of the project. “We’re up to the part where we’re starting to collect cans,” says Ms Lim, “and there will definitely be a prize for whoever has the most - we’re just not sure what that is yet!” Ms Wells says one of her favourite things about Christmas is the opportunity to help people and give a gift to somebody in need – something all three of the girls are putting into action this festive season. Learning coach Kyle Hattie says he is proud of the girls for their initiative, and hopes to see more projects like this come out of the school’s iExplore programme. iExplore is one of three learning blocks at Ormiston Primary School, giving

Mr Hattie says the girls aren’t the only ones who have successfully put their project into practice. Eight-year-old Ronav Naicker wanted a place to ride his bike, so he used his time in iExplore to design a bike track for the school. The year three student was given

approval to implement his project after making a presentation to the school’s Board of Trustees, and has contracted the Bike On New Zealand Charitable Trust to make the project a reality as part of its national Bikes in Schools programme. Mr Hattie says there is currently no timeframe on the project, but confirmed the school has given it the go-ahead and will see it through.

And now our Paralympians are also winners in the eyes of countless of families and kiddies after leading Sunday’s Farmers Santa Parade through Auckland’s CBD to celebrate the city’s festive season. This year’s parade – Auckland’s 83rd – was led by five of our champion Paralympians seated proudly on the all-new Riothemed Paralympics float at the head of the cavalcade. Javelin silver medallist Holly Robinson – who carried the New Zealand flag in Rio – was joined by teammates Nikita Howarth, Rebecca Dubber, Laura Thompson and Jesse Reynolds as the official Grand Marshals for this year’s parade. Tens of thousands of excited parade-goers welcomed both them and Santa to Auckland as the 1.9-kilometre-long event wound its way through the city’s CBD. In addition to the stellar sporting connection, cultural diversity was a huge theme in 2016. In her 28th year running the event, Farmers Santa Parade organiser Pam Glaser says, ”this year has been a real mix

of contemporary characters and traditional favourites. It’s not only celebrated the festive season but the cultural diversity of Auckland city as a whole and I’m so proud of how it’s all come together.” “Certainly our Paralympic athletes were a big hit with the crowd,” Pam says. “The Rio ﬂoat looked stunning with its bold colours and dancers alongside. Our Paralympians did us proud and it was a huge honour to have them lead the procession. “In terms of the event itself, it was probably our biggest year ever in terms of ﬂoat variety and amazing pageantry.



‘Neonatal Secret Santa’ launched

he Neonatal Trust is looking to provide a special package to the families with a baby in a neonatal unit on Christmas Day. Christmas day is a day for families to get together, be together and make memories. While neonatal families would much rather have their precious baby (or babies, in the case of multiples) at home on this special day, they are in the very best place possible for their care. Justine Brooker, operations executive from The Neonatal Trust said: “We want to provide a Christmas package to each and every family with a baby in a neonatal unit to brighten their day” “Through buying in bulk and also with the generous support of some partner organisations we are looking to provide a special pack to families. “However, there are some costs to cover including distribution around the country, packaging, and more.” “We’d love some support to make this happen, and have set up a special donation page where people can contribute to this initiative and also leave a personal

Trolleys to be piled high for those in need this Christmas

ountdown and The Salvation Army have teamed up again to make Christmas a little brighter for Kiwi families in need, by providing vital food assistance as part of the Christmas Food Rescue Appeal. Countdown is encouraging shoppers to make a food donation in-store in specially marked Christmas Food Rescue trolleys, or online. Last year more than 750 trolleys full of customer donations were handed over to The Salvation Army before Christmas. In addition, all 183 Countdown stores each donate $500 of groceries to their local Salvation Army centre, contributing more than $90,000 of groceries to The Salvation Army’s food banks nationally. This year people can also donate online at New Zealand’s first online food bank, The Foodbank Project www.foodbank.org. nz. One year on from launching, more than 50,000 grocery items have been donated via the site and distribution has expanded from an Auckland trial to eight hubs around New Zealand. The Salvation Army’s National Secretary for Social Services, Major Pamela Waugh, says around 17,000 families are expected to ask for food assistance by the end of the Christmas season in December. She says a range of factors including the dairy downturn, debt levels, the rising cost of housing, and now the recent earthquakes contribute to Kiwis

Athletics day a win East Auckland primary schools gathered at Lloyd Elsmore last week to host their annual athletics competition. After two previous cancellations, organisers finally scored a bluebird day for the HPPA Primary InterSchool Athletics competition at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Every few minutes, the bang of the starting pistol

would draw the stadium’s attention, as parents yelled encouragements over the sidelines and contestants from the previous race sidled over to the results marquee. The event started at around 10am on Wednesday 23 November and was attended by 11 East Auckland primary schools. Wakaaranga School

principal Brent Jenkin was the Master of Ceremonies for the day. Competing schools were: Pigeon Mountain School, Shelly Park Primary, Star of the Sea, Cockle Bay Primary, Botany Downs School, Point View School, Mellons Bay School, Wakaraanga School, Owairoa Primary School, Sunnyhills School and Willowbank School.

Political brigade at Indian awards By FARIDA MASTER It would be interesting to know what Prime Minister John Key and the Leader of Opposition Andrew Little were discussing along with Mayor Phil Goff as they sat next to each other at the Indian Newslink Ninth Indian Business Awards on Monday evening. Jackie Clarke, the feisty mistress of ceremonies, called them the “three amigos” as the friendly politicians shared notes and obliged everyone with selfies at the glittering event held at the SkyCity Convention Centre. Mr Key was in a jolly good mood as he regaled the audience with anecdotes about his trip to Delhi with the Indian delegation. “Mr

Modi is a fantastic PM,” he said at the business excellence awards. However, the trip to India had an unscheduled stopover at Townsville when the plane transporting the delegation broke down, forcing them to cancel their scheduled visit to the Mumbai stock exchange. “And what do you do when you are stuck in a cubbyhole? You go straight to the pub. There, I meet this guy with a big Australian hat asking me, `Are you the Prime Minister of New Zealand?’ “Later they sent a journalist to interview me and put me on page one, two, three, had an editorial on me, the cartoon and practically six pages devoted to me. ast month the Minister of Finance, Hon Bill English, presented the Crown accounts which highlighted a surplus of $1.8 billion for the year to June 2016. This is a significant increase from $414 million in 2014/2015. New Zealand’s economy has made significant progress over the past eight years. Unemployment is down to 4.9 per cent, jobs have increased by 185,000 over three years and the average wage is up to $58,000. Our economy has transformed into one of the fastest growing in the developed world and it continues to go from strength to strength. In spite of the Canterbury earthquakes and the Global Financial Crisis, the Bill English has delivered operating surpluses since 2014/15. This has been achieved whilst also increasing spending on essential social services. We are able to do this because we have worked hard to reduce ineffective spending of taxpayers’ money. Irrespective of world events and natural disasters, New Zealanders expect our health services to provide the necessary care to meet their needs. This is why we have invested $96m to further increase elective surgeries by 4000 a year. We have also increased the number of doctors and nurses by 6100 since 2008. New Zealanders also expect our education system to flourish. It’s great news that our ECE participation is up to 96.6 per cent. Our

Speed is the single biggest road safety issue in New Zealand today. There has been a serious accident almost every year in the Pakuranga/ Edgewater district since 2011, and high speed has been a factor in all of them. All of these accidents have been on urban roads. The faster you drive the more horrific the injuries in the event of a road crash. In fact, a pedestrian hit at 70km/h has a 96% chance of dying, compared with 40% at 50km/h, and only 5% at 30km/h*. Being part of a community includes looking out for each other and sharing the roads. There is a huge

impact on family and friends when loved ones are killed or seriously injured. Driving at a safe speed for various road conditions means the likelihood of a road crash causing injury to yourself and others is markedly reduced. Let’s tackle the problem together by driving to the conditions, and staying within the speed limit. Pakuranga United Rugby Club are doing their bit to help change the culture of speeding. There were tears of shock and joy! “I couldn’t believe that from the 5500 students that participated at the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, I was selected,” says Kaitlin Maher, student of Botany Downs Secondary College. The year 13 students is one of the students from New Zealand who has won a place in the Young Shakespeare Company (YSC). She says she is counting the days to July next year when she will travel to London and perform at the prestigious Globe Theatre. Kaitlin first competed at the Sheilah Winn Festival, (one of the schools co-curricular activities) and was awarded a direct entry to the SGCNZ National Shakespeare Schools Production. On the 25th anniversary year of SGCNZ and the Quattro centennial of Shakespeare’s death, SGCNZ continues its legacy of lifting Shakespeare from the pages and translating it to captivating performances—giving students a chance to collaborate and imbibe life skills. Jacqueline Hood says: “Kaitlin spent a week down in Dunedin in the last holidays with 47 other students from around New Zealand. Out of the 48 students, 24 were selected to become the Young Shakespeare Company and she was one of them.” Each year 24 of New Zealand’s most talented young actors are selected from SGCNZ’s National Shakespeare Schools Production to form SGCNZ YSC to participate in an array of workshops, talks Q & A sessions at Shakespeare’s Goble, London. They will then

have an amazing opportunity to perform for the public at the Globe. “While the competition in Dunedin was tough since every shortlisted student was an `amazing actor,’ in my opinion, it was more about how we connected with the director and understood the nuances,” says the 18-year-old with a passion for acting. “I love performing Shakespeare and decoding the text.” “The fascinating thing about the festival is that people choose different parts and use them in a different context. I think I did it quite effectively,” says the year 13 student who relishes the richness of language. “They even taught us how to sing the waiata, the traditional Maori songs so that we could perform once we are in London,” she says. Kaitlin says she is excited about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at the grand original Elizabethan theatre. “This is the only place in the world where people get to perform for three and half weeks.” The talented students will have workshops and tours of the Rose and National Theatres as well as the Royal Shakespeare Company and theatres at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Talented actors to put on a technicolour performance More than 220 of Auckland’s brightest young stars, aged seven to 21, will take to the stage in December to present the Lloyd-Webber/Rice timeless classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in a strictly limited season of four school matinee shows and three public performances. All National Youth Theatre Company (NYTC) productions are triple-cast to showcase the very best and this year’s lead role of Joseph is played by Kynan Robinson (19), Takerei Komene (17) and Cole Johnston (19). Directed by Jonathan Alver (Royal Shakespeare Company, NZ Opera, Shortland Street) musically directed by James Doy (NZ Musician of the Year 2014) - the talented cast includes emerging talent discovered through NYTC’s Outreach Programme. The programme provides scholarships to singers, dancers and actors, giving them an opportunity to participate in an NYTC production. Raising funds for Movember Raising funds for Movember is a subject that the men at Seaside Meats in Cockle Bay feel strongly about. It’s the reason why the team behind the popular Seaside Meats hosted a BBQ sausage sizzle on Saturday, November 19. The blokes were thrilled with the amount they raised which totalled to $330.70 in the three hours. “I think it’s fantastic,” says Herb Hancock, owner Seaside Meats. “The money raised will go to the Movember Foundation especially for prostate cancer which is one of the causes that is close to home for our team.”

Theatre Preview: Cynthia Fortitude meets Rugby World Cup

f laughing till your cheeks hurt is how you like your musical theatre, you won’t want to miss Cynthia Fortitude’s Farewell – the second coming up this December. Accomplished and self-proclaimed musical clown Helen Moulder stars as Cynthia Fortitude in her farewell concert, performing two shows at Howick Little Theatre (December 10-11). From the moment she enters to the finishing bow, this musical comedy is guaranteed to entertain. Miss Fortitude has been commissioned to write an opera for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, and does so in a hilari-

ously dramatic fashion, throwing out adages like “Art is long, life is short” and challenging audience members to prepare themselves as thoroughly as she has for the show. The much anticipated nonarrival of her usual accompanist forces Miss Fortitude to employ stand-in accompanist Dr Gottlieb Von Oberstock Winkle Dorf – only to realise that he’s overqualified for the role and has a solution for every off-the-cuff problem she encounters. The patriotic opera, named BALLS, is combined with a farewell concert to her adoring fans, some really high notes, and a daring attempt to break a

Mozart speed record. It’s filled with musical mishaps, controlled chaos and flawless on-stage chemistry between the two characters. The award-winning Ms Moulder has worked in theatre for 40 years in the UK, New Zealand and Australia, starring in many shows including Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera, Wellington women’s comedy troupe Hens’ Teeth, and Vita and Virginia in 1998. She has performed as Cynthia Fortitude for nearly 30 years, and first met accompanist Timothy Bridgewater in 1981 when they performed a Wellington show together. Now he’s back for her

second farewell – and brings with him a remarkable resume of past theatre productions, starring as Musical Director for many musicals, including West Side Story, Les Miserables and a national tour of Cats. nce again the magic of Beauden Barrett has provided the Midas touch to yet another exciting All Blacks victory following Sunday’s hard-fought 24-19 rugby result in Paris. It was the amazing Barrett from deep in his own territory who produced the cross-kick for Julian Savea to gather with a fingertip catch and send Israel Dagg racing for his 10th try of the season. The Auckland Croquet Singles Championships were held at the Lloyd Elsmore Park lawns at the weekend. Players from all Auckland and Counties Manukau clubs, as well as some from as far away as Tauranga and Northland, took part in the competition. It was an especially successful event for Pakuranga Croquet Club, with Kurt Warn winning the premier division, Matthew Chen winning the intermediate division and Jeff Sunderland finishing runner up in the junior division.

Another gold medal for Brazilian jiu-jitsu star F

or the second year in a row, local Brazilian jiujitsu star Brandon Meyer has returned home from the Pan Pacific Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships with a gold medal. After months of hard training, the 12-year-old travelled to Melbourne last month to compete in the biggest Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) competition in Australasia. Of the 200 competitors at the event, Brandon – competing in the 40-44kg, white to range belt – was one of only two Kiwis to win a division. The Year Seven student from Farm Cove Intermediate came out on top after three difficult four minute matches, including one against his Kiwi training partner Corban Glew, who picked up a bronze medal. “In each match my goal was to get my opponent to the ground, pass his legs, hold him down and submit him,” Brandon said, reflecting on his winning performance and second Pan Pac

belt, Van Robertson, and his regular training partner Corban Glew, as well as his fellow fighters at the Auckland MMA gym in Pakuranga. He was recently promoted to a higher belt and aims to compete at the 2017 Kids World BJJ

Championships in the United States. The next 12 months will be dedicated to training and fundraising as Brandon strives to meet this goal, and he hopes to secure some sponsorship to help get him there.
