erves are frayed after a large blaze in Bucklands Beach destroyed the home of a family of four. Howick fire fighters were called out at about 9.30pm on Wednesday to a burning house near the Pakuranga Domain on Gills Road. A fire spokesperson says three appliances were called to battle the blaze which took more than three hours to put out and the garage was well-involved in fire when fire fighters arrived. The home’s occupants including a mother and three children
were safe but shaken after the incident. Mum Emma says that the fire started in the garage. “My son was down there and it was ignited by some petrol from the lawnmower and it just went from there. It damaged the entire garage. My son’s room has lost its ceiling and there’s water damage and smoke damage throughout the house.” Neighbour Christel Kelly offered up her home to the distraught family for the night. “We’re waiting for insurance to get back to her and hopefully sort things out. It’s all confusing and very scary.”

Anna Baird and Chelsea Sloan have completed a year of intense stage and screen training which has left them fired up to make things happen in their lives – Ms Baird to pursue a professional local acting career and Ms Sloan to tackle the tantalising big screen opportunities of Hollywood. Ms Baird is a veteran Howick Little Theatre (HLT) actor and, until she started The Actors’ Program at the start of this year, was manager at HLT. At the age of 18, Howick’s Chelsea Sloan, a former regular at Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre, was the youngest actor to be accepted for the course. The Actors’ Program is a privately-run year-long course headed by professionals, Sara Wiseman, Michael Hurst, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Michele Hine, Cameron Rhodes, John Callen and Charlie McDermott. Sixteen people from throughout the
country were accepted and all will officially graduate next February. Ms Baird says the course aims to get aspiring screen and stage actors industry ready. Much of the work is carried out in a realistic environment, such as the Shortland Street studios. “The whole year is very intensive with no down time and hardly any time to breathe. The other distinct thing is we were trained from the word go by industry professionals, such as Sara Wiseman and Jennifer Ward-Lealand who are still working actors.” While Ms Baird had a grounding of the practical aspects of running a theatre from her time managing HLT, Ms Sloan says she had never given a thought to the business side. “I didn’t know about budgets, marketing, how to apply for funding, or the need to have ideas about how many tickets would be sold.

eena Datt is in awe of her mum Aroha who has been battling an aggressive form of blood cancer since 2010. So Reena has shown her respect by having her long mane of hair cut for a second time. At the beginning of 2012 the Mellons Bay woman sacrificed her hair because of her desire to help people who suffer from the heartbreak of having cancer and losing their hair caused by radiation and chemotherapy treatment. With a combination of Maori and Indian heritage, the cut had special signifi-
cance given the symbolism attached to it in both cultures. Since 2012 Reena has had her hair trimmed twice. But because of the thickness and speed of growth she decided to again have it cut for the cancer cause. “Last time I cut my hair for cancer it was sent to China and India to make two wigs and was sent back to New Zealand for cancer patients,” she says. “This is something I’ll continue to do as my hair grows so fast and so long and, as much as I love my long hair, I know it goes to people who need it much more.” Aroha Datt, of Highland

Park, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the spleen in 2010 and has been through a series of spleen chemotherapy treatments, blood transfusions,
a bone marrow biopsy, MRI scans and ongoing infections that reoccur because of her reduced immunity. She says she has her ups and downs, “but it’s all good
and I am in remission. I’ve been without my hair five times from the treatment. It used to be thick and has always grown back thick.” As well as supporting her mum and donating her hair for cancer patients, Reena dedicated the hair cut to her friend Sara Crooke in memory of her mother, Trish Crooke, who died from cancer at the end of 2011 after a short threemonth battle. Reena took the plunge for a second time with support from Image Hair, Highland Park, which donated a styling session for her shortened locks as its contribution.
Stockade Hill bus stop relocation plans canned By Marianne Kelly Auckland Transport (AT) has made a U-turn on relocating a bus stop to the base of Stockade Hill in Ridge Road, Howick and is investigating the feasibility of another option. It would involve reconfiguring the junction of Ridge Road and Picton Street in order to establish a safer bus stop in the intersection. Public concern, backed up by the Howick Local
Board, about pedestrian safety resulting from the relocation of the bus stop by Crawford Park at the intersection of Mellons Bay Road and Picton Street to Ridge Road, initially fell on deaf ears. AT said there were no other viable alternatives to the relocation site chosen. It said the existing stop was in a poor location for safety and access reasons, and it added journey time to every bus on one route in order to serve a small
number of passengers each week. “While the new bus stop location [Ridge Road] chosen isn’t optimum and the site is somewhat constricted, the footpath width meets minimum standards and the bus can at least be bought parallel to the kerb to improve accessibility,” AT said at the time. However, last August the local board carried a motion to urgently consider making a modification to Mellons
Bay Road to continue to accommodate the existing bus stop. Elected member John Spiller said: “I am not happy that the new site is a safe option and we do not want a death on our conscience.” AT subsequently ruled out an alternative on Picton Street, north of Walter MacDonald Street on road safety grounds because of the impact on motorist sight lines exiting Walter MacDonald Street.
If the reconfiguration of the Ridge Road and Picton Street junction proves feasible, AT says it would be subject to consultation and availability of funds. The option would involve considerably greater cost. At the December board meeting last Monday (Dec 14) Mr Spiller asked whether any more information was available. But an AT spokesperson said there was nothing further to ay except that another option was being looked at.

Camp Quality fun for all
All the world’s a big stage
Kids with cancer have been enjoying the summer event for years
S
ummer holidays are a time for children to chill-out, laugh with their buddies and enjoy new adventures and some incredible volunteers ensure that happens for some special youngsters. For 30 years, hundreds of children living with cancer breakout the smiles and have an awesome six days at Camp Quality’s annual summer event. The first summer camp was held in Auckland in 1985, with about 30 children in attendance and has continued ever since. This year about 90 children and 140 volunteers and carers from the Auckland/Northland region will join the action at Wesley College, Pukekohe from January 10 to 15. The week will be packed with fun-filled activities with an emphasis on encouraging the children to be children and forgetting about their illness for a moment. Camp Quality regional manager, Geoff Barnett, says 30 years ago when children were ill they were wrapped in cotton wool and told they couldn’t do anything. “Camp Quality’s philosophy is centred on children just being children and even when they are ill they still need to have fun,” he says.

“The concept is to treat them like children in an environment where their health needs are still looked after but are not the main focus for them. “It is about them doing fun activities and having a great time while they are cared for.” Of course, none of this would be possible without a huge number of volunteers, funding and donations of goods. Mr Barnett started volunteering with Camp Quality through Bucklands Beach Lions Club and another Howick volunteer, Brian Laurance
started out through the Freemasons’ Ara Taimau Lodge No. 1. As well as spending a day on food preparation and cleanup duties at Camp Quality, Mr Laurance is always on the lookout for fundraising opportunities. In 2012 he spotted a funding application form at FreshChoice Half Moon Bay and successfully started a charitable partnership with the supermarket. Since then, FreshChoice has provided on-going support for

“Now I have a lot of respect for the people involved in this side of the theatre,” she says. “There’s also an idea that all actors have big egos. But this course teaches about the real world, about being prompt and learning your lines.” Ms Baird, now with the assistance of an agent, says she is very keen to carry on with her acting, to build a good relationship with her agent and not rest on her laurels waiting for the phone to ring. “I have some ideas to do some writing and to put myself forward. I’m hopeful that opportunities will come up. I would consider another performance with HLT but it would depend on the timing and what play comes up. “My heart is very much with HLT. I have a lot to thank this theatre for. It has a very professional standard and a lot of passion behind it. “There are many unsung heroes who get no financial benefit.” While her heart is in the theatre, Ms Sloan says she would like to concentrate on film work. “I’ve drawn up a five-year plan. I would like to eventually live in America and do the LA thing. It’s about luck and being in the right place at the right time. I’m hoping for some luck to get me there.” ■■ The Actors’ Program runs a five-day workshop in July. the summer and winter mini camps and the store co-owner Chris Harris says his company gains a lot from its relationship with Camp Quality. “My daughter and son both volunteered to help at Camp Quality and afterwards they were changed young people,” says Mr Harris. Staff members at FreshChoice Half Moon Bay are encouraged to volunteer at the camps and this summer Mr Harris is happily providing 1,000 bottles of water to keep children and volunteers hydrated. Recently, the local Camp Quality heroes popped into the supermarket at Half Moon Bay marina and present Mr Harris with certificates of appreciation. “We are very thankful for all of the help we receive,” says Mr Barnett. “The cost of camp never gets any less and without the help of local businesses, community clubs and other various organisations we wouldn’t be able to continue what we do. “If a business or organisation felt they had something to offer we’d love to hear from them.” For more information on how you can help, phone Geoff at 021-927-402 or visit www. campquality.org.nz.
National champions turn their eyes to export markets By Marianne Kelly A group of Pakuranga College young entrepreneurs are national champions after winning The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Company of the Year Award in Wellington. The students created A Brilliant Signature with the challenge to run a small business during 2015. Founders of the company are Kobe Huang, chief executive; Honghao Wu, finance director; Mary Liu, marketing director; and Jiemin Peng, communications director. They created customdesigned signatures for their customers, supplying each
customer with samples of three different signature options, a slow motion video and tracing paper. They beat 17 other student businesses in the national final with five minutes to pitch their business to a panel of judges. Kobe is ecstatic about the win. “I’m so excited for the future. For us, winning this prize means we’ve been recognised by businesspeople who have so much experience. There are so many opportunities ahead of us.” Simon Murray, head of the college’s business studies, who was also named East Auckland Young Enterprise ‘Teacher of the Year’, says the ABS group
has achieved a “stand-out” performance. Young Enterprise chief executive, Terry Shubkin says the team displayed much maturity and insight. ABS sold to clients in New Zealand, Australia and Singapore. Before winning the national title, the team told the Times it was looking to a wider platform with an ambition to take their innovative product to an international audience. Initially Jiemin says, the group was having difficulty getting its brand into the young adults market and realised that traditional outlets such as trade fairs were not working. Instead it took a 21st century option to
Kobe says the project is not just a 12-month effort, but could take a number of years. Next year the team will start studying commerce at university and the business will continue. “We believe in the potential of the business,” Kobe says, “and are confident that we can achieve greater brand loyalty and get into the business world. No-one is doing this in New Zealand except us.” Each member of the winning team receives a scholarship to the Massey University Business School and a $3000 cash award. The school also receives a $2000 cash award. The company’s website is www.abrilliantsignature.com

drive traffic to its website. It ran a one-week signature selfie competition on Facebook with a prize of movie tickets, pens carrying the ABS logo and free signatures. Facebook visitors increased by about 1200 during the competition and an extra 500 hits on the website resulted. However a presentation to a Howick Rotary Club meeting also revealed other target markets, such as business people and sports celebrities. So ABS introduced a premium strategy with higher quality art work and prices. Also it can match a signature to an individual request, for example a rugby ball for a rugby player.

Cities to lead way on climate change T
he Super City has the tools and opportunities to take action on climate change, Mayor Len Brown says. The Government says there will be no early progress on agricultural emissions in the wake of the global climate agreement in Paris. Mr Brown says this puts the onus firmly on transport and energy “and that’s where Auckland as a city can – and will – take action”. “When it comes to climate change, cities are where it’s at. “Of the nearly 11 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in Auckland in
2013, 3.8 million came from road transport,” he says. “That’s 35 per cent and the single largest emissions source, so anything we can do to give people options to their car is going to help.” Auckland Council has set a target of reducing emissions by 40 per cent by 2040 (relative to a 1990 baseline). The introduction of the new electric trains alone has reduced emissions by one per cent. The Mayor is now fine tuning the action Auckland will take in the wake of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below two degrees C, with
the intent to pursue a 1.5 degree target. The agreement recognises cities as essential in fast tracking transforming action in the urban world. The actions of cities could make up a third of the shortfall between the Paris agreement’s ambitions and country commitments – 3.7 gigatons of urban greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Among the initiatives the Mayor says Auckland is already implementing, but which require more effort in the wake of the Paris Agreement, are the continued transformation of Auckland’s transport system with the focus
on public transport and cycle and pedestrian walkways. It’s also leading by example with the council’s procurement, building and infrastructure design. The retrofit of the council’s headquarters building has reduced energy consumption by 40 per cent and saved $535,000 a year. Auckland is also moving to a Zero Waste city by rolling out separate organic waste collection and community-led resource recovery network. Mr Brown says his invitation to attend and speak at the Paris conference, as well as his inclusion in
the official delegation, was recognition of Auckland’s position as one of the world’s most liveable cities. “And while the Auckland story is a good one, it was not just about telling it,” he says. “It was about learning from best practice examples from around the world in areas such as urban regeneration, sustainable transport, energy efficiency and conservation and hot transport trends. “We learnt from other cities facing similar challenges, enhancing Auckland’s ability to benefit from their expertise, tools and programmes in the future.”
Retailer donates to Mangemangeroa Valley restoration By Marianne Kelly Lance Martin’s battle with itinerant possums in his Mission Heights backyard has resulted in a welcome donation of money to the volunteers who are restoring the Mangemangeroa Valley and an ongoing relationship with a major retail chain. When The Warehouse Botany team won the company’s in-house regional Environmental Award in October, part of the deal was that the $400 reward should be donated to a local environmental cause. Mr Martin is the assistant manager at the Botany store and was quick to come forward
with his suggestion that the money be donated to the FOM (Friends of Mangemangeroa Society) volunteer group. He had read in the Times that FOM was asking for residents surrounding the valley who were experiencing problems with pests such as rats, possums and stoats, to contact the organisation with information about their experience. “I have been catching possums for two years in a row, and our property doesn’t even border the reserve,” he says. “We’re in suburbia and we’ve still got the possums. They love my pohutukawa trees.” Store manager Mark Hopwood says the Botany
store team is constantly looking at ways of reducing environmental costs. “We scored the biggest reduction in waste going to landfill and our electricity costs. “We could choose a group to donate our prize money to,” he says. “Lance was dealing with the pests so we got hold of Allan [Riley FOM chairman].” Sally Barclay, FOM committee member who accepted the $400 donation said the money would be used to support the planting and restoration at Mangemangeroa Reserve. “I’m thrilled to accept this money,” she said.

Oral care highlighted Three special needs classes at Edgewater College last year benefited from a personalised education programme around oral health. The programme was specific to their individual requirements. Often students can have physical challenges or impairment which hinders their ability to brush their teeth. In some severe cases, children with special requirements can end up in hospital because of a lack of regular oral care caused by the challenges. The Edgewater College programme demonstrated the importance of cleaning teeth by using visual techniques. It also monitored the progress of students and their oral health. Part of the initiative involved an oral health grant from the Wrigley

A
number of hospital residents at HBH Senior Living Care and Village in Howick were grateful to receive eight murals designed and painted by local students to brighten the view from their bedroom windows. After an HBH manager noticed the view of a plain fence from some of the residents’ rooms, a number of secondary schools were asked to help paint murals to brighten the view. Linda Corring, an art teacher at Pakuranga College, volunteered her art students who designed four murals, choosing New Zealand scenes featuring Rangitoto Island and the forest with Kiwi and Ruru. A youth group from the Howick Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also joined the project, doing all the undercoating and designing another four murals with kowhai trees, tui, pohutukawa and fantails. Spillers Hammer Hardware pitched in donating undercoat and paint for the murals while a number of regular volunteers also donated paint as well. HBH Senior Living Care and Village volunteer coordinator Kim Thwaites was incredibly pleased with the outcome of the project. “This project has been a fab-

ome contents of meticulously shrink-wrapped boxes have survived a quarter of a century, revealing forgotten memories of another era. Last week saw the opening of Cockle Bay Primary School’s first time capsule secured in a water tank 25 years ago. Of the 48 parcels retrieved, 26 were claimed and the next tier, a 50-year time capsule will remain sealed for the next quarter of a century. Initially hatched as a school fundraiser, Coca-Cola sponsorship saw the cistern painted to resemble a red Coke can for a few years, before changing to blue. Past students and their families attended the event with the school’s current students presenting various videos and performances to reminisce about the year 1990 where Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block were all the rage, New Zealand hosted the Commonwealth Games and Sky TV had launched with just three channels. Stacy Caudwell-Kay was 10 when she placed her memories in the time capsule and now has a daughter in Year 1 at Cockle Bay Primary School. She humorously recalled kung fu shoes and fluorescent clothing during her speech at the assembly and later said she hadn’t realised how quickly time had gone by.

“It’s just crazy that time’s gone past that fast. I don’t even feel that old!” Howick businessman John Russell of John Russell Menswear was there with his son, Mark, and wife, Sue, at the opening. While their photos had deteriorated, the rest remained intact including bills, grocery flyers, an overdue infringement notice for the annual TV licensing fee, as well as artwork and stories written by the Russell children. Mark, a filmmaker now based in Wellington, was impressed with his discoveries. “My handwriting was very neat. I think it’s gotten worse over the years!” The 31-year-old doesn’t remember much of the event
but recalls hunting for material to place in the box of memories. “There’s so much more in here than I did remember.” The work of his siblings, Scott, who was then eight, and Nikki who was then five, also feature with the help of Mrs Russell. “The kids used to tell me stories all the time and I’d write them down,” she says. Mr Russell, a school uniform supplier, said that he would help the school track down the owners of the unclaimed items. Principal Graeme Lomas says it was a walk down memory lane. “There’s a few treasures and a few sad stories there too. It certainly brings back memories for people.”

Apathy rules
Only 11 per cent of Aucklanders are fully prepared for a disaster, the lowest level in New Zealand, a new report says By Marianne Kelly
D
isasters are becoming routine, yet Aucklanders remain stubbornly unprepared for them, a recently-released Civil Defence and Emergency Management Plan says. Research shows that today’s communities are more aware of the hazards and risks that may affect them, particularly where they live. Individuals have ready access to hazard and risk information to help guide their land-use decisions and preparedness levels, for example storm and tsunami inundation zones. But Aucklanders perceive the likelihood of a disaster happening here as low, so they’re less likely to make a priority of being prepared. However, the report says discussion with Aucklanders shows they are generally more prepared than they think they are. The main areas where they struggle are ensuring enough drinking water is accessible and developing a household emergency plan. From a planning perspective it would be useful to know the level of preparedness across geographic and demographic groups in the region, the report says. But this level of detail is not currently known. In general Aucklanders are apathetic about their need to be prepared. The challenge, the report says, is to shift them from apathetic awareness to personal prepared-
ness. There is a need to promote a culture of preparedness that is embedded into everyday life and becomes a moral attitude of ‘that’s just how we do things around here’. However, this will require a profound transformational change. Community response plans are not without their challenges, the report says. They are better suited to rural areas that are isolated during and after a disaster. These groups are generally more adaptable because of their location, which influences access to amenities and services, and in turn contributes to strong connectedness. Urban communities are more disconnected and the plans have little success, the report says. Consequently there is a need to look at new approaches to these disconnected urban groups. n A strategic document outlining how Super City communities can be helped to build resilience against natural and man-made disasters will go out for consultation in January. The draft Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Group Plan 20162021 outlines key targets that will help achieve the vision. Steps concentrated on for the next five years include strengthening community connectedness, increasing knowledge of the hazards and risks, advocating for policy change, and working more closely with partners to manage risk more effectively.

Feedback In 1939, Britain and her Empire were the only countries fighting the Nazis who had enslaved Europe. They were exterminating the disabled, aged, gays, Jews and gypsies plus anyone else they felt like killing. The British Empire carried on the fight for two years before the Russians and Americans came in due to the fact they had been attacked themselves. New Zealanders should be proud of their grand and great grandparents and the New Zealand flag. The Union flag in the corner of ours was the only battle flag of the free world for two years. Stan Hunt Howick
Is change progress?
“It is not strange...to mistake change for progress,” said Millar Fillmore. When the laws of our courts offend the laws of God, where do we stand? For those of who recognise God’s presence in our lives and His influence in the affairs of state, we have to stand where God wants us to stand even when it means opposing those man-made laws. The Abortion Law blights this country of ours as does the same-sex marriage bill. Life in the womb used to be the safest place for new life to be nurtured, but sadly not anymore. A civilised society protects its most vulnerable, but what are we doing in NZ is certainly not protection. Where are the rights of the unborn child? We need more children born into caring, balanced fami-

lies, not less. I’ve yet to meet a fellow Christian who does not extend love to the homosexuals, both men and women, who are born in the image of God. However, their behaviour of indulging in sexual union of man with woman and woman with man is, in God’s eyes, an abomination. Nice flag but...
I’m pleased to see in the Howick and Pakuranga Times (December 10) that Farm Cove Intermediate School has its own flag. However, in spite of Mrs Vicki Parkins, the assistant principal, stating that: “There are so many rules when you have a flag”, the design leaves much to be desired. Like the Prime Minister and the Flag Consideration Panel, the school has not sought advice from someone with knowledge of heraldry. Words have no place on a flag. It is hard enough reading them from the “front”, and impossible from the”back”. The koru design is reasonable, but the school emblem is too indistinct and too small. ich, eclectic, bright and exotic colours are back. So be daring and opt for tropical and aqua blue, reds and spicy oranges, emerald, sapphire, golden yellow, plum and indigo. Black and grey are also still popular. If the ceilings are darker than the walls they will seem lower but will give the room a warmer feel. On the other hand, a lighter ceiling appears higher and the room brighter. If the rooms feel too small, choose light colours to make them look bigger. It you’re afraid of quickly tiring of walls that are all the same colour, in a bedroom, for example, an accent colour can be used on the wall where the headboard is located. Monochrome tones are soothing. To create a balanced look, opt for contrasts between warm and cool colours. Choose decorative accessories in stronger tones than the dominant colour of the decor. Choice of colours always depends on the mood you want to create. So while being guided by the latest trends, also be sure to opt for colours that you like. A harmonized palette of colours and beautiful furni-
ture isn’t all it takes to create a great decor. You still need some well-chosen accessories to add the finishing touch. Drapes, lamps, rugs, and cushions should never be chosen randomly; they make all the difference to how a room looks and the feeling it creates.

Here are some rules to follow when accessorizing your home: ■■ Define your style: Think harmony. For example, contemporary or industrialstyle accessories in a rustic country decor would seem incongruous. You can play with contrasts for an element of surprise, as long as
you keep in mind that an accessory must still look natural in the room. ■■ Think about the light: Choose different accessories depending on whether you want to attenuate or accentuate the natural light coming into the room. For example, stainless steel door handles and mirrors reflect light, while wooden panelling and a wool carpet absorb it. ■■ Be careful about colour: Choose accessories in colours that contrast with those of the walls if you want them to stand out. If you’d rather create a neutral monochrome effect, opt for accessories in the same tones as the room’s basic colour scheme. ■■ Consider proportions: Accessories should be selected based on the size and dimensions of the room. Imposing accessories appear to dominate a narrow room, while small objects seem lost in open spaces. ■■ Dare to be daring: Do you think your favourite decorating magazine wouldn’t agree with your choices? Don’t be afraid to express yourself; the important thing is to create a room that suits you and that feels good to inhabit.

Stars line up for Owairoa Proud Oliver Mealings takes a break with Warriors NRL stars Shaun Johnson (left) and Manu Vatuvei during their recent visit to Owairoa Primary. The Warriors visit
was a prize that was given to the school by parent Fiona Reynolds. She won the prize through Farmers and Bendon Men. The athletes took more than 30 children
who were all avid Warriors fans for ball skills, fitness work and a game of touch before signing autographs for the rest of the school and their families.

The Land Rover NZ Polo Open in February decides the New Zealand Polo Championship and is the premier polo tournament in New Zealand. ury for a day as you attend what is arguably summer’s most anticipated sporting and social event. The action’s not only confined to the field; guests are encouraged to unleash their inner Julia Roberts during the traditional ‘stomping of the divots’ in the hope of catching the eye of one of the celebrity judges of the Fashion on the Field contest. And there is the thrill of placing your bets to see who will come out on top in the infamous Horse V Car race half way through the day. It’s a lovely setting to take the family and a picnic. Once the sporting action
concludes, guests can stay on at the official after party, and celebrate with the polo stars. This year there will be pre-registrations for the Fashion on the Field via iticket.co.nz and a catwalk show. For those who enter, there are fantastic prizes up for grabs including a $1500 voucher for Gregory and $500 Mi Piaci shoe voucher. Earlybird general admission tickets are on sale through iticket.co.nz or head to the Orsini tent for a VIP experience. Take the family for a picnic in the beautiful countryside. group of lucky Howick Pakuranga baseball players have been chosen for an under-13 regional Auckland squad to play a three-day tournament in the Gold Coast. The idea for the team was raised by head coach Jonathan Southey to bridge the gap between club level and national level. “You’ve got club teams and the New Zealand team, and there’s nothing in-between. So I touched base with Auckland Baseball to see if they were keen on the idea of sending a team over to the Gold Coast,” he said. Aiming to build a regional team, trials were held with almost all Auckland baseball clubs attending from as far north as Orewa down to Pakuranga. “We wanted to get as many players from different clubs as we could,” Southey said. After the initial trials, an extended development squad of 25 were selected to undergo another six week training period. The Howick Pakuranga boys trained once a week, on top of club commitments, to make the final team of 15. The seven players all said, “We trained really hard.” With most of the boys hav-
Three local school boys have been named in the NZ Schools Football Under 19 squad to tour Australia in July next year. Howick College students Chris Walden and Liam Brown as well as Howick resident Calvin Lee were selected for the team after passing the Auckland provincial trials and the national trials. “This is quite an achievement, considering that the camp had 36 players and cut down to just the top 18 school boy footballers in the country,” Lee said. The three footballers have reunited after previously playing together for the Somerville Intermediate team in 2010. “It was great to see each other again and now be heading to Australia next year on tour together,” Lee said.

mould, easy to shape.” The team leaves for the Gold Coast on January 7 to play three Gold Coast representative teams. According to the Howick Pakuranga boys they’re going to “Show them how we play ball in NZ, like the All Blacks did.”
