There were some beautiful horses and beautiful riding at the Auckland Cushionride Festival of Dressage at the Clevedon A&P Showgrounds from November 20-22. Among the highlights were Wendi Williamson and Deja Vu MH scoring over 70 per cent in the musical freestyle and a lovely harmonious performance from Julie Flintoff and Belladonna MH gaining them first place in the level five musical freestyle.

Closed doors rezoning provokes fierce fight By MARIANNE KELLY
T
he possibility that Howick village could in time be hemmed in along its northern side by three-storey residential buildings is expected to create widespread anger, according to Howick Ward councillors, Dick Quax and Sharon Stewart who have taken no part in the plan change. Maps of up-zoning decisions made behind closed doors by Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan Committee have been released in confidence to the councillors, but
were leaked last week to the New Zealand Herald newspaper. Neither Mr Quax nor Mrs Stewart are members of the committee. Mr Quax says widespread changes are being made with no community consultation and without any submissions asking for those changes. According to the leaked report the Howick village change involves up-zoning the northern end of Ridge Road from the corner of Bleakhouse Road and around Howick Village to Sale Street.
Changing from ‘mixed housing suburban’ to ‘mixed housing urban’ gives potential for the development of buildings 10 metres high (plus one metre for a portion of the roof) - or three storeys. Under mixed housing urban, developments would require resource consent, could be declined and could be notified. Mr Quax says the important fact is that some sight lines will be lost, although he acknowledges that under the PAUP (proposed Auckland Unitary Plan) the
council is obliged to protect view shafts, such as that around Crawford Reserve. He and Mrs Stewart are also angry at another proposed change in the leaked report which involves up-zoning both sides of Pakuranga Road, from the Pakuranga Plaza to Aviemore Drive from ‘mixed housing urban’ to ‘terrace house and apartment building’ (THAB). The change has been made on the strength of just one submission, Mr Quax says and no consultation. ➤ Turn to Page 5

andice Thum has been making headlines since she was just one day old. She was Australia’s first IVF (in vitro fertilisation) baby, a marvel of modern science. Sydney-based Rebecca Featherstone Jelen, a 29-year-old mother of two is also a test tube baby and is here in Auckland to dispel the stigma around fertility matters. They call themselves the IVF-lings. “Lings as in aliens,” they laugh. On a more serious note, they explain that the term is used to describe a child conceived through assisted reproductive techniques. The duo has some startling fertility facts to share such as one in six couples is infertile. Also, every classroom these days has at least one IVF baby. Men and women equally contribute to it. “Of infertility cases, 40 per cent is a male issue, 40 per cent female issue and remaining 20 per cent is unknown or combination of male-female,” says Ms Thum (nee Reed) who is married to a Kiwi and has now settled in the eastern suburbs. The young mothers,

who’ve conceived their children naturally, have recently launched a ‘Fertility Matters’ campaign in Australian calling for better education on fertility issue. “Both Rebecca and I are mothers and we want our children to receive sound information on reproductive health and fertility. “Not just how conception occurs and how to avoid it,” says the 35 year-old Auckland mum. After receiving an overwhelming response in Australia, they are now set to launch ‘Fertility Matters’ in New Zealand. “We got loads of attention on social media, newspapers and TV channels,” says Ms Jelen. Ms Thum and fellow IVFling Ms Jelen have worked on a survey to understand the community’s level of knowledge on fertility and hope to use the results to guide the content of the secondary school syllabus. They strongly believe that fertility matters should be taught in high school. “Things like IVF, surrogacy and same sex couples need to be more widely discussed in the education system to create awareness,” they insist.
IVF-Lings: Test tube babies Candice Thum and Rebecca Featherstone Times photo Wayne Martin Jelen want to dispel myths on reproductive health.
Ms Thum says that fertility and reproduction have always been a part of the conversation growing up. “My parents were very open about it but it often takes me by surprise how little others seem to know about the subject.” Ms Jelen says that having children during your early 20s is the best time. “With age your fertility declines. “This is not to say that we are encouraging early pregnancies, but so many of the people who are struggling to have children say ‘wish we knew this earlier’.” As the brains behind the

They hope it will encourage families to talk more openly about fertility so generations to come are aware of how common fertility issues are but also that they can hit the schools, politicians and the health system in the next stage of their campaign. After Paris, the local Muslim-Christian council calls for peace, respect and love
Former Times sports editor Daniel Silverton is a finalist in the 2015 Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards sponsored by Sport New Zealand. The New Zealand Sports Journalists Association said more than 120 entries were received across the 11 categories. Silverton is a finalist in the NZME Award for Best Community Sports/Recreational/Adventure reporting category with Andrew Alderson (NZME - Herald) and Dylan Cleaver (NZ Herald). est to ourselves.” Dr Boorooni says when innocents are attacked there are other reasons, than religion. “This crisis is not just the Middle East. Now people from many faiths want to be involved in the discussion. “It is important to analyse, even the psychological reasons.” Dr Boorooni and Rev Keeley represent the Shia Muslim-
Christian Council of Aotearoa NZ, an organisation born out of human friendship, they say. Asked what the Christian and Muslim communities can do in their own environments to foster peace rather than war, Dr Boorooni says education has a greater role. “Look at the ISIS attackers, they are aged between 20 and 24 and some have converted to Islam. “But some do not have a good education and understanding of Islam, but have been brainwashed by others. “It shows us that we must work more on the youth. “In New Zealand we need more understanding, not just of Islam but of that of our neighbours who may be Hindu, Christian or Muslim. “It means as neighbours living here peacefully we must know each other better. How do we keep the peace without knowing each other?”
Malosi did not think the woman should receive permanent name suppression as she had widely publicised the deed on social media. Despite that, she has one month to lodge an appeal, according to the New Zealand Herald. In the article Judge Malosi said the defendant’s actions after the incident were
more concerning including “continued taunting” of victim Dandi Wang, but acknowledged the defendant had done community work and donated to charity. Ms Wang said she was happy with the judge’s decision and was grateful for the support of friends, family, the police, the courts, her psychologist and ACC.

hen Paris was attacked by an ISIS terrorist group two Howick clergymen spoke out in sadness and condemnation of the event. Their message was one of solidarity with other Christian and Muslim leaders. Former All Saints Anglican Church vicar, Reverend Bruce Keeley spoke in unison with Dr Ali Boorooni, resident scholar at the Islamic Ahlulbayt Foundation of New Zealand community centre in Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga. Unlike many media comments, their message also expressed sadness at the attack the day before Paris in Beirut, Lebanon. Rev Keeley says it’s interesting that when the bombs fall in Beirut, the West says nothing, yet everyone is up in arms when it happens in Paris. The desire by Western

nations to strike back is understandable, he says, and it is interesting that a greater consensus has now emerged among world leaders, for example Russia and the US. “When innocent people are being killed it is understandable that they want to retaliate. But if we are concerned about innocent people, it should be all innocent people. But there is a rush to protect those clos-

Formosa takes new direction
L
ocal investors have taken over the multi-million dollar Formosa Golf Resort expressing good intentions. Although Australian citizens, the new owners of the multimillion dollar investment in Beachlands have been based in New Zealand for more than a decade and live in the Howick ward. The 18-hole course with 50 self-contained villas and a restaurant was bought for an undisclosed sum by privately owned company 110 Formosa trading under Pine Harbour Ltd (no relation to Pine Harbour Marina).
Investors Tzong Wen Huang, Meng Wang and major shareholder Wendy Wen finalised the sale in early October. The NZ Herald reported last year that the 190 hectare site was “in the throes” of being sold for around $45 million but no contract was settled. Manager Jerry Shih understands assets were consolidated to purchase Formosa and the investors’ portfolio formerly included North Shore’s Milford and Highbury Shopping Centres. He says while it is too soon to say what the owners’ plans are,
sold: Formosa was bought for an undisclosed sum by a privately owned Photo supplied company.
he says for now, the golf course will remain. Residential development will not be ruled out, however, says Mr Shih. “We would welcome the idea if we can get support from the locals. It’s a treasure to the local community.” Mr Shih says former owners, the Tseng family, were introduced to the new owners through mutual friends and says Formosa will continue to serve the public. “We welcome everyone. It’s a public place not just for members only.”
Rezoning provokes fight ➤➤From page 1
The Unitary Plan Committee’s decisions may have arisen from a recent report, ‘Auckland Council Development Capacity 2015’ which used computer models to show that while close to 900,000 sites had been “enabled” for intensification, less than 100,000 had market feasibility. “This goes back to what I have been banging on about incessantly,” Mr Quax says. “That because things are ‘enabled’ in the plan it doesn’t mean the developments will necessarily occur. “Now it seems the council planners are going down every rabbit hole to find where
they can intensify development. “It is going to face huge community backlash. “People are suspicious about the lack of transparency already. The council’s use of professional judgements is an indication of how much the process is out of the hands of the elected people.” According to the leaked report the single house zone on the eastern side of Howick to the coast will remain unchanged because it’s outside the FTN (frequent transit network) walkable catchment. It says the Unitary Plan will rely on single house zoning to maintain the character of the area. But Gayleen Mackereth who
chairs the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association says proposed side and rear allowances of one metre are now proposed as the rule for all zones in the PAUP, including ‘single housing’, “meaning someone can build virtually on top of you and you will have no say and will not be consulted”. “The sizes,” she says, “will not allow sufficient room to sit in a kitchen chair in the backyard; will not allow for birds to nest because no sufficiently large trees will be accommodated in these sizes; and the areas will be inaccessible for wheelchair users or disabled people with a guide or mobility dog.”
not happy: Dick Quax (left) and Sharon Stewart believe there could be widespread anger to possible plan changes. Times file photo

ook into the many facets of Wally Rice and some may well see fire and ice. The exceedingly warm gentleman with flame-tinged hair has, for decades, made his mark in the cooling trade. Coming from a family of bakers used to the heat of the kitchen, this is quite contrary. Of course, Wally, being the only redhead of the family, was never going to go down a traditional path although his russet crown may have been inherited from his father’s side. More than that, Wally has inherited the family’s legacy, Rices Mall, which was established by grandfather, Jonathan and father, Henry Russell (‘Russ’) and is still very much involved in the day-to-day running of the nostalgic retail site in Picton Street home to various quirky businesses. A former Pakuranga College student, Wally first started off his career as an apprentice for Kiwi whiteware manufacturer Fisher & Paykel. “The big name in our area was Fisher & Paykel. Just about everyone wanted to work for Fisher & Paykel.” Scoring the dream position, it seemed Wally was meant to be a ‘cool’ guy, spending more than a decade with Fisher & Paykel as its air-conditioning and refrigeration specialist. That part of the business

later sold to Fletcher and Wally met a service engineer called Alf Reynolds who invited him to go into business. Together, they formed Reynolds Refrigeration Ltd, which went on to great things for big clients such as Air New Zealand as well as developing cutting edge refrigeration technology. But when GST was introduced in 1986, Wally decided it was time to leave. He then helped his father with various projects including the maintenance of Stevenson Village on Botany Road and the RSA residential units on Sale Street before an opportunity came up with Coca-Cola (later Coca-Cola Amatil) as its national refreshment engineer, setting up the ubiquitous vending machines of today. Other work followed including for a cold beverage com-
pany called Pacificool and Wally continued to maintain the family assets in Howick including Rices Mall and Moore Street shops (which have now been sold). Meanwhile, at home, things were busy Wally having married at age 23 and children following soon after. “I had one of each! Lion Red DB, Lion Red DB,” he laughs. Now with nine grandchildren, and another on the way, the proud grandfather is a staunch supporter of the Howick Historical Village and the Classy Crafts market in the All Saints Community Centre. It’s at the market where he found new love in local author Marilyn Bakker – or “my lady” as Wally fondly calls her. The love for his birthplace remains undiminished. “Howick’s all about the people. There’s a lot of lovely charity, community-based groups and good musical talent. “And it’s still an English village by the sea.” As a result, Wally’s relationship with the Times goes back a long way. “The current editor Nick [Krause] was my original contact and that’s how the paper started – upstairs in Rices Mall. “It’s still the best community newspaper around and there’s always been a fondness there.”

Kiwiana Day celebrated all things Aotearoa and although weather took its toll on Town and Country Day, these community events set the scene. Wining and dining is a favourite part of village life and the inaugural al fresco Volvo Long Lunch Series was the talk of town for weeks, with many diners marking their calendars for 2016. Winter warmed up with the Best Business Awards – a celebration of Howick Business Association’s shining stars as nominated by the public. Starting at the very grassroots of the business community, the Shop Local Work Local business to business campaign was launched and will continue growing in 2016. A new initiative to get villagers on their bikes was launched as a cycle tour from Half Moon Bay to Howick Village. Organised in conjunction with Auckland Transport, the pedal-

powered ride was a hit with cyclists and similar plans are underway scheduled for early next year. The world famous in Howick Midnight Madness was a stellar launch into the Christmas season, with swarms of visitors creating the biggest street party the village has hosted. Last but not least, the Christmas lighting display in Fencible Walk Park continues to bedazzle families and visitors rejoicing in the spirit of Christmas. It all brings home that Howick Village is delightfully different. With its charming blend of history in a modern environment and great people – it holds a special place in many hearts.

Christmas is approaching and most of us will be busy again choosing presents for our families. If you haven’t decided what to purchase for your beloved father or husband this may be a good option – a Health Check Up. According to studies, men …… • Often do not set their overall health condition or set prevention of health problems as a high priority in their daily life. • In general, seem to ignore health issues until they become noticeable to others that are close to them (wife, family, or friends). Even then, in many instances, many men need prodding to have themselves examined by a physician. • The reasons why health is a low priority for many men is complex and may include such rationalisations as o “I’ve been doing well, so far...” o “I’m too busy and have to earn a living...” o “I’ve been (fill in the blank_____) for years, so why should I change now...” o “When I had problems before, I’d just keep on working and they would go away...” Consequently, for many men, accepting and understanding how important good health habits and preventive medical care might be, is a struggle. So, if your loved one is aged 45 years and older and has not seen their GP in over two years book them an appointment today…

Putting Howick on tourist maps By Marianne Kelly

hat do the scenic destinations of Waiheke, Matakana, or Piha have that the Howick Ward doesn’t? Not a lot according to Brett O’Reilly who heads ATEED (Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development). The chief executive of the Auckland Council CCO (council-controlled organisation) was guest speaker at a recent Howick Tourism networking meeting and described how the pools at last year’s NRL Auckland Nines were named after Rangitoto, Piha, Waiheke and Hunua Ranges. “Do we put Howick on one next time?” he asked. “I believe we have it all before us in a significant way here,” he said. “For the first time a new hotel will be built in this area at Pakuranga Plaza. “Now that Ngai Tai ki Tamaki’s settlement is finalised I know they have plans for tourism. “I know how significant the opportunity is here. There are untold stories and opportunities.” The SPLORE boutique music and arts festival at Tapapakanga Regional Park
on the south-east coast gave Aucklanders the opportunity to come out to regional parks that they didn’t know existed, he said. “We want to work with local tourism clusters and help them grow.” Active groups so far were in Franklin, Matakana, Kumeu and Waiheke, he said. “I see just as much potential here in Howick,” he said. “There are gems of potential here, unparalleled. “ATEED wants to try and bring an integrated approach, getting leverage off the different activities. “We want to focus on how to create the right environment to allow businesses to grow and how to help with facilities. Nothing is too small – we are happy to help with the small stuff,” he said. “We know the markets in Auckland are popular, such as Clevedon and Matakana. And we are interested in promoting the night markets.” Des Topp, who heads the incorporated society Howick Tourism, said the group had grown from 33 to 75 operators who were being encouraged to network among each other and work through the Howick Local Board (HLB) and

ATEED to promote tourism opportunities. “Our mission is to engage local operators to work collaboratively.” Howick Tourism met every two months and was working to take developments to the next stage, he said. In a report to the last HLB monthly meeting ATEED said staff had spoken to the key members of the Howick Tourism Group and other tourism operators, including Howick Historical Village, Howick Village, Uxbridge Centre for Arts and Culture, Fo Guang Shan Buddist Temple and the Pakuranga Golf Club for initial engagement on developing a Howick Tourism plan. The tourism plan would provide a framework to develop initiatives in an integrated approach in Howick for the next three to five years. It provided a mechanism for the HLB to support local tourism operators or by overcoming key constraints. ATEED staff members are expected to report back to the HLB by the second quarter of 2016 to seek approval of project scopes and a budget to implement the Howick Tourism Plan.

pensioner houses to a social housing provider. Mr Quax says matters in the report which will prove to be highly controversial include whether the council should continue to own pensioner housing, or subsidise golf clubs, or sell off a portion of its parkland. “Other matters will create less excitement, but we do need to have a conversation about whether the council needs to own nearly a quarter of the Auckland International Airport shares or 100 per cent ownership of the Ports of Auckland,” he says. “Should the council own parking buildings when there is no market failure in this sector?
“I knew that the mayor’s vision of making Auckland the world’s most liveable city would come at a cost,” Mr Quax says. “High environmental standards, clean fast and attractive public transport, a city that attracts international talent and many of the other aspirations contained in the Auckland Plan all come at a cost. “Five years after the amalgamation is a good time to take stock of how we are going to realise the goals and aspirations of the Auckland Plan.” The council’s finance and performance committee has agreed to hold a workshop in February to consider the direction it wishes to take.

report which recommends wide-ranging suggestions for funding the Super City is welcomed by Howick Ward councillor Dick Quax. “I welcome the far-reaching nature of the reports prepared by Ernst & Young and Cameron Partners in response to Auckland Council’s resolution that every source of alternative funding should be up for discussion,” he says. “I’m hoping that there will be broad public discussion about matters raised in the reports.” Among the suggestions are a full or partial sale of the city’s airport, port and water assets; privatisation of golf courses, parks, car-parking buildings and marinas; and sale of its

he 1980s, like fashionable decades such as the 1950s and ’60s, have left a lasting artistic impression on musicians and fans of the songs of that glamorous, big-hair time. And so it has been for Andrew Maclaren, the former drummer and technical programmer for Stellar, the Kiwi group with singer Boh Runga that enjoyed brilliant success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with two number one albums, Mix and Magic Line. Maclaren lines up in the allstar 1980s show band 80sX that plays at the Howick Club on Thursday, December 17, with the concert also featuring the cheeky talents of Andrew Fagan, who knows a thing or two about the 1980s. Fagan is the well-remembered make-up wearing, barefooted frontman of the much-loved Mockers, who charismatically delivered hit after hit and memorable performances to guide his band into the charts and hearts of the nation during a magnificent 10-year run. “For me, it was all that fantastic stuff we grew up on,” says Maclaren, recalling the music of the 1980s. “When we were in Stellar, we were all inspired and influenced by the great songs of that era.” Maclaren, along with Runga, and Stellar’s guitarist Andrew

van de Geer and bassist Kurt Shanks, were also fortunate to work alongside a man who had produced global pop hits in the early 1980s. Their co-producer was Tom Bailey, who was in the British techno dance trio Thompson Twins alongside his Kiwi wife Alannah Currie, as the pair had relocated to Auckland as Stellar’s star was in the ascendancy.
Tickets are available from the Howick Club at $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Pre-concert Christmas buffet tickets are also available for an additional $25. ■ The Times has double pass tickets to give away to the 80sX Christmas Concert. Santa’s elves work at being a gift to the world The countdown begins with just three sleeps to go to the Howick Santa Parade on December 6 at 2.30pm. There’s a palpable sense of excitement as 50 groups are preparing to participate at the crowning Christmas event in Howick. Taking the lead is the Rotary Club of Somerville, together with the Rotary Club of Pakuranga, led by Sylvie Wilkinson that has been working tirelessly, gathering Santa’s elves from the neighbouring Rotary Clubs who, in true Christmas spirit, have come together to work on an underlying theme of Rotary for this year: Be a Gift to the World.
For the first time there was a different synergy at work, as five club presidents and an AG, along with the young and not-so-young members from different Rotary clubs of South–East Auckland, came together for a working bee, leading up to the parade. The Rotary clubs of Pakuranga, Howick, Highbrook, Auckland South, Botany– East Tamaki and Somerville were spotted merrily packing loads of gifts for the Santa Parade. The idea behind the inspiring theme of being ‘A Gift to the World’ is to transform lives and make a difference. And what better time to share the good word with the community, than in the season of plenty? One of the older members of Rotary at the working bee for the Santa Parade was overheard saying: “It’s well worth giving up my siesta time. We should have more of this.” A well orchestrated exercise by Rotarians Andrew Harvey and Sylvie Wilkinson, a note to the local Rotary clubs on November 15 read: “This afternoon the Rotary clubs in our area held their working bee to prepare

the float and decorations for the Howick Santa Parade. Six of our seven clubs were represented, with 42 people working away at the Pakuranga Sailing Club, to ensure we are ready for a great show on the on the day. “Our thanks to Rotary Club of Somerville for their superb organisation and enthusiasm, and
to Rotary Club of Pakuranga for the afternoon tea.”
"There's nothing like partaking in the celebrations when Santa comes to town," says the jolly good man.
Rotarian Harvey says that on the big day, the combined Rotary Clubs of South-East Auckland plus the Rotaract clubs of Pakuranga and BotanyManukau will walk with the club banners beside our ‘Gifts to the World’ float and classic cars.
■■ Nearly one million Rotarians have been successful in eradicating polio from the world. That has been one of Rotary’s greatest gifts to the world, apart from thousands of other projects that every Rotary Club takes up.

A KIWI COMEDY BY JUSTIN EADE SEASON: FEB 27 TO MAR 19 A humorous tale about Central Otago farmer Tryfen Gribilco, who is running a bungy-jumping platform with a young, by-the-book offsider, Marty Wellings. Tryfen is perfectly untouched by the ravages of political correctness and has an opinion on just about everything, which he freely shares with his high-profile clients – an urbane Australian senator and an uptight German UN delegate and her minder.

Get your togs on this Christmas It’s a Kiwi summer tradition – grabbing your towel and togs and heading to wherever you can to dip, dive and drop into some water, but where are the best places to go? The AA Directions team has put together 10 of its favourite summer swimming holes to help inspire Kiwis to make the most of summer. “What we love about swimming holes is that they’re not always easy to find, so stumbling across one is like finding a hidden gem,” says AA Directions editor Kath Webster.
“Included on our list are a few sports that came highly recommended by AA members,” she adds.
■■ Blue Spring, Putaruru, Waikato: Te Waihau walkway follows a river with calm, clear pools great for swimming.
■■ Mosquito Point, Whanganui: What makes this spot special is a sturdy rope swing to leap into the river from.
Here are AA Directions’ 10 favourite swimming holes:
■■ Kerosene Creek, Rotorua: This natural hot spring in a river between Rotorua and Taupo is a popular gem.
■■ Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, Malborough: Several great swimming spots are dotted along this riverbank.
■■ Karekare Falls, Waitakere, Auckland: Get to this spot with a 30-minute climb up the Taraire track to the top of the falls.
■■ Rainbow Falls, Kerikeri: An easy walk through native bush leads to these falls and swimming hole.
■■ Cleopatra’s Pool, Abel Tasman National Park: Complete with a natural
■■ Bulli Point, Lake Taupo: Located on the main road to Turangi, there are ledges of varying heights to leap into the lake from.
■■ Mermaid pool, Matapouri, Northland: Around the rocks form the beach, this rock pool is easiest to access at low tide.
waterslide. ■■ Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes: Leaping off the long wooden jetty into this cold lake is the best way to get in! For more information about these swimming holes and other summer hot spots visit aatravel.co.nz.
Our favourite Christmas Tree The pohutukawa tree, with its crimson flower, has become an established part of the New Zealand Christmas tradition. This iconic Kiwi Christmas tree, which often features on greeting cards and in poems and songs, has become an important symbol for New Zealanders at home and abroad.
The pohutukawa turns the theatre on around Christmas time.
In 1833 the missionary Henry Williams described holding service under “wide spreading pohutukawa.” The first recorded reference to the pohutukawa as a Christmas tree came in 1867 when the Austrian geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter noted that settlers referred to it as such.
Pohutukawa and its cousin rata also hold a prominent place in Maori tradition. Legends tell of Tawhaki, a young Maori warrior, who attempted to find heaven to seek help in avenging the death of his father. He fell to earth and the crimson flowers are said to represent his blood.

Time to scotch the myths Five common misconceptions about collecting artworks are explained by Balamohan Shingade, manager/ curator of the Malcolm Smith Gallery at the Uxbridge Centre for Arts and Culture, which will open its Tutors and Students Exhibition on December 3 (source Auckland Art Fair).
You must be rich to collect art
“Especially in the central city, you see works going for hundreds of thousands of dollars. That’s not necessarily the case. All the works at our exhibition are priced at under $500. They are by established artists, PhD students and a broad mix of emerging and established artists.
new building as a contemporary art gallery, but will offer people the space to consider the works.”
The higher the price, the better the art
“This is not necessarily the case. It may mean that the gallery has a high reputation or that the artists have gained some traction in their careers. We look at supporting emerging artists as a way to mitigate that. We support art school leavers, people working in organisations like Uxbridge, and provide ideas from experienced artists so they are able to produce excellence.
“We like to engage people with a huge market of emerging and established artwork. It’s not to say that if it costs more, it is better.”
“People are familiar with the property ladder, but not the art ladder and they are not the same. Buying ‘investment’ art because you hope that it is going to inflate in value and you can trade it in to pay for your retirement is not going to be satisfying in the long term.”
You need an MA (Hons) in Art History or Fine Arts
The art world is snobby and intimidating
“You don’t. People have a fear, especially in contemporary art galleries which our new one will be, that they don’t get it. They fear that they don’t understand the context, but they need to give themselves credit. “Contemporary art is the art of now. But we need traditional works because it’s about learning from the Impressionists or people prominent in history. Next year we will open our
“I can understand this feeling but we need to work to get rid of it. When people come to the Malcolm Smith Gallery they will find it’s not snobby because of our drive for public engagement.

Jingle all the way to Bin Inn As bakers and cooks take to the kitchen for the upcoming holiday season, Bin Inn comes to the rescue with tried and tested recipes... Many of the ingredients can be found in the Howick store in Moore Street including nuts, dried fruit, aromatic spices, baking mixes and much more.
pan by greasing the sides, then lining the bottom and sides with baking paper. Wrap the outside of the cake with newspaper and secure. Simmer the dried fruit with the brandy (or water) until most of the liquid is absorbed and the fruit is plump.
Take your pick from festive favourites such as Christmas cake, pudding and muffins, mince tarts and much more.
Meanwhile, mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
Here are some recipes to inspire courtesy of Bin Inn:
Paleo Christmas Cake Ingredients: 1½ cups chopped, mixed and dried fruits of choice plus 1 cup of water or brandy 1 cup chopped nuts of choice 1 cup almond flour ½ cup coconut flour, sifted ½ tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp mixed spice ¼ tsp ground ginger ½ cup coconut oil, hard from the fridge Zest of one lemon Zest of one orange plus 2 tbsp juice 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp almond essence
Method: Mix fruit mince ingredients in a food processor.
Combine all the ingredients together and gently mix until combined.
Sift flour and wholemeal flour in a bowl.
Pour into prepared cake pan and press down for an even surface.
Add melted margarine.
Bake in pre-heated oven for about 1 hours – or until a thin knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Cool completely on a baking rack.
Christmas mince tarts
Method: Preheat your oven to 120°C. Prepare an 8 inch round or square cake
Ingredients: Fruit mince (or just use Bin Inn fruit mince for convenience): 1 cup raisins 1 cup sultanas ½ cup dates (chopped) 1 cup figs
Ingredients: Raw chocolate: ½ cup cacao butter 2/3 cup raw cacao powder 2-3 tbsp coconut nectar or maple syrup
Tart pastry: 1 cup flour ½ cup wholemeal flour ¼ cup margarine ¼ tsp artificial liquid sweetener 3 tbsp cold water
Then, mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Add the dried fruit mixture to the wet ingredients plus two tbsp orange juice.
Decorate the top with almonds, pecans, dried fruit etc.
Peppermint creams
(chopped) ½ cup prunes (chopped) ½ cup brandy 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp lemon rind (finely grated)
Lastly, pour the remaining chocolate over the hardened mint filling in each cavity until almost filled and return them to the freezer and freeze overnight. The next day, remove the mould from the freezer and set aside for a few minutes before popping them out of the cavities and eating.
Mint filling: ½ cup cashews – soaked overnight and drained ½ cup coconut oil, melted 3-4 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp coconut milk 1-2 tsp peppermint essence 1 small handful of fresh spinach
Store the left over chocolates in the freezer so they remain nice and icy. Take them out only before eating! Try out these festive beauties and don’t forget to pop in to Bin Inn for a flavoursome Christmas!
Method: Melt the cacao butter in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water.
Mix sweetener and add to flours and mix well.
When completely melted, stir in the cacao powder and your sweetener and whisk until well combined. Remove the bowl from heat and set aside.
Add enough cold water to make a dough. Roll out dough to 3mm thick. Cut into circles to line the base of tart tins.
Place all ingredients for the mint filling in a blender or food processor and blend well. Pour the content into a small bowl and set aside.
Fill with fruit mince. Use a cookie cutter to cut a top from left over pastry, place on top. Bake at 190°C for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Dust with icing sugar and enjoy!
A recipe from Beyond the Bin book soon to be launched this month:
Fill your mould of choice about a third way through each cavity (the remaining chocolate will be used later). Freeze it for 15 minutes (or until it hardens) then remove from freezer. Spoon some of the mint filling on top the hardened chocolate in each cavity and put it back in the freezer for about 45 minutes (or until it hardens) then remove from freezer.

Time to start forming a menu of yuletide treats Travelling Apricot and brandy glazed ham Ingredients: 1 whole cooked leg ham, bone in or out Small handful whole cloves 1 cup apricot jam ¼ cup brandy
Method: Melt butter over a medium heat, add garlic and sauté for a minute.
Method: Preheat oven to 150 degrees C.
Add prawns, lemon pepper and celery salt.
Warm ham in oven for 10-15 minutes until skin starts to loosen. This helps it to peel off easily.
Peel off ham skin by gently pushing your fingers between the skin and fat. Use a sharp knife to lightly score the fat in a diagonal criss-cross pattern. Insert a clove in the centre of each diamond.
Mix apricot jam with brandy.
Recipe: www.annabel-langbein.com
Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, remove from heat and cool in a bowl on the bench.
Place ham in a large baking dish and spread over the glaze.
Retro prawn salad
Add mayonnaise, aioli and cucumber to prawns.
Bake for 50-60 minutes, brushing with glaze from bottom of roasting pan every 10 or so minutes. It’s best served at room temperature.

Dr Svetlana Chevenko is offering free language courses over the Christmas holidays. Times photo Wayne Martin
Free oriental language classes By Marianne Kelly Organisations looking for new activities and an opportunity to increase young peoples’ learning during the summer holidays are being sought by a linguist who is offering a free introductory course for Chinese characters. Pakuranga woman Svetlana Chevenko has a PhD in applied linguistics, specialising in oriental languages. She’s observed the number of signs written in Chinese characters throughout the Howick Ward as the result of new immigrants choosing to live in the south-east. “There are so many signs in Chinese around the city, and my course would help young people to understand what they are saying or be able to ask a question about what the sign says. “People will get this knowledge, and knowledge is power.” She envisages teaching groups of about 10 young people aged 10 to 15. The class would be similar to those she has conducted this year at Selwyn College called ‘let’s start reading Chinese’.

Since she arrived in New Zealand from the former USSR 20 years ago, Dr Chevenko has used her background in computerised automatic translation to develop snappy crash courses which teach Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters simply and quickly.

“My classes would be introductory only,” she says. “If the young people attending don’t continue any further, it is a piece of knowledge and world culture they will be able to keep.” She wants to hear from groups, for example churches, youth groups or people organising holiday school activities who would like to take up her offer of free tuition and can provide a location equipped with an overhead projector and white board.
“The characters are not as difficult to master as we are accustomed to think,” she says. Unlike many other language teachers, Dr Chevenko bases her teaching around getting an understanding of how the ancient Chinese created the writing

These drivers are dangerous Due to the house that we are renting having a small driveway, we need to park some of our cars on the road. Friday morning, (November 13) at about 1am, my son heard a bang and his car alarm went off. Looking out his room window, he saw his car parked about two metres up the road from where he parked it last. He ran outside to find the right hand side of his car totally smashed and the right rear wheel in the middle of the road. A reckless driver had lost control of his car speeding down Bleakhouse Road, Howick, and spun out into my son’s car. But by the time my son got outside, the driver had already driven away. Luckily, there was a police officer who was off duty. He saw the crash then pulled over to tell my son what had happened while he was on the phone with the police. Police arrived and told us a few minutes after the crash they found the driver. A lot of the neighbours were there to offer help. They all had brought brooms and started sweeping the road to pick up all the broken glass. While we were all busy cleaning up the road, we heard a loud car racing towards us.
Big CRASH: Reckless driver terribly damaged a student’s car.
Police told us to get off from the road so they could tell the racers to pull over. There were three cars and as soon as they came around the corner, the two cars at the front slammed on their brakes but the car at the back couldn’t stop fast enough so he swerved out to the footpath, nearly hitting all of us. It was a very crazy Friday the 13th for us. We would like to say a big thanks to all the neighbours that came to help and support us and also a big thanks to the off-duty police officer and all the other police officers who came to help. The sad thing was that my son only had third party insurance and now has no car to get to school and back as he had

to drive to Ormiston everyday, and that’s because of a reckless driver. Name withheld Howick
No one cares about our soldiers We would like your feedback about what happens when our men and women come back from deployment. Where do they go for treatment and why is it that they never get publicity or parades when they return? These men and women put their lives at risk and nobody cares. How did we get the Christmas cake?
O
ne of the oldest Christmas dishes known is mince pie, which originated in the Middle Ages. The original recipe contained a mixture of finely chopped poultry, pheasant, partridge and rabbit. Later, sugar, apples, raisins and candied oranges and lemons were added. Over time, the meats were eliminated leaving only the sweet ingredients introducing the Christmas pudding and sweet Christmas mince pies. Christmas cake began in England as plum porridge. In the 16th century, the oatmeal was removed from the original recipe, and butter, flour and eggs were added to create a cake. During Christmas time the fruit cake was made with spices to represent the
dings, were originally filled with meat, such as lamb, rather than a dried fruit mix as they are today. They were also first made in an oval shape to represent the manger that Jesus slept in as a baby, with the top representing his swaddling clothes. The ingredients for
exotic eastern spices brought to the birth of Jesus by the three Wise Men. There are some traditions surrounding the Christmas cake such as when is should be made. Traditionally it is made in November and kept upside down in an airtight container. Each week until Christmas, a small amount of brandy, sherry, or whisky is poured into holes in the cake; a process called ‘feeding the cake.’

the modern mince pie can be traced to the return of European crusaders from the Holy Land. Middle Eastern methods of cooking, which sometimes combined meats, fruits and spices, were popular at the time. Pies were created from such mixtures of sweet and savoury foods; in Tudor England, shrid pies (as they were known then) were formed from shredded meat, suet and dried fruit.

ight now, tonight, in our area, there are parents with children, single men and women, entire families with nowhere to call home, sleeping in garages, with friends or family in crowded conditions and, when these options run out, sleeping in cars. This happens because there is a dire lack of emergency housing in the South East Auckland region, says Kim Godinich, board chair of Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Pakuranga/Eastern Manukau. Designated emergency housing is needed in our community, she says, places that can accommodate families and single people who need a place to live short-term, along with support to get them back on their feet and settled into permanent housing, she says. A number of community groups are supporting CAB in this, asking Auckland Council to initiate urgent action to establish these facilities. CAB is well-placed to comment on social issues as it assists clients each year with more than 500,000 enquiries nationally. CAB Pakuranga, which
has about 13,000 enquiries annually, sees clients in desperate situations regularly. “They are heartbreaking cases, especially where children are involved,” Ms Godinich says. “They come to us as a last resort, having already tried all other options available to them, often referred to us by Government agencies,” she says. Numbers of enquiries from people needing emergency housing are increasing, doubling in the South East since 2013, which makes the lack of emergency accommodation all the more worrying. “There are very few options to offer these people,” Ms Godinich says. “We can suggest
hostels, boarding houses, local marae or camping grounds, but some of these are beyond their means and not suitable for families with children. “A concerted community effort involving local and central Government working with community groups is needed to tackle this problem in our region. Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga can be contacted on 576-8331.
Home maintenance app plan Kiwi homeowners can manage their most valuable asset with the help of the first mobile app from YellowLabs. The free app retrieves the most up-to-date local council information about the user’s property, including council value, estimated market value and the size of the property. It also creates a personalised maintenance plan based on information
specific to the house. The app provides useful DIY tips on how and when to complete maintenance jobs and recommends businesses to get them done by tapping into the 240,000 Rich Profiles on Yellow Online. Yellow chief executive Michael Boersen says, Yellow/home is the first tool created by YellowLabs to help New Zealanders man-
age their lives more easily. App functionality includes the ability to get all the information about a home in one place, including council value, estimated market value, property and house sizethe decade the house was built and the materials used. ■■ For IOS download: Search for Yellow/home on the Apple app store; for Android use Google Play.

Targeting scammers F
raud awareness is being promoted by Consumer NZ as scammers masquerading as legitimate companies continue to target Kiwis. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin lists typical approaches as being told you are the lucky winner of a competition you never entered or had a call from the tax department about a big refund heading your way. “The caller just needs to confirm a few personal details...like your credit card number,” she says. The recent Fraud Awareness Week aimed to raise awareness about the underhand practices scammers use and what people can do to protect themselves. Ms Chetwin warns consumers about well-known
scams doing the rounds. Glossy brochures that have scratch-to-win cards from Malaysian travel companies with names such as “Glorious Moment Vacation”, “Humble Glory Travel” and “Spirit Seven Travel” have prompted complaints to Consumer. The scratch-to-win cards routinely reveal the recipient has won an impressive US$165,000 prize in the company’s lottery. “When you contact the company to claim your prize, you’re asked to pay a fee to cover government taxes or some other cost,” Ms Chetwin says. “The fee can be several thousands of dollars. But you won’t receive any winnings and your money will be lost,” she says. “Consumers need to be
certain they’re dealing with legitimate companies before finalising a transaction or responding to an urgent request,” she says. Consumer NZ’s top five tips for people to protect themselves against scammers are: ■■ Never reply to any email asking you to confirm your bank or credit card details. Legitimate organisations will never ask you to do this. The same applies if you’re asked for this information over the phone. ■■ If you’re buying goods online, check the billing process is secure (characterised by https:// and a padlock symbol in the URL). Ensure the business has a physical address and telephone number.
■■ Research the firms you’re dealing with. Use the Companies Register at www. companies.govt.nz to see if the company exists and who’s behind it. ■■ Don’t be swayed by coldcallers promising bargain deals or instant riches if you sign up on the spot. Legitimate companies will give you time to do your research. ■■ If you think you’ve been scammed, report it to the police. If you’ve handed over your bank details, contact your bank and immediately suspend your account. Fraudulent credit card transactions can sometimes be reversed. ■■ For more information on scams and tips on protecting yourself, go to www. consumer.org.nz.

Transform gardens for butterflies Butterflies add colour, movement and whimsy to any landscape and are therefore welcome guests in most gardens. Learn how to attract and keep close these winged beauties by following these smart tips. ■■ Don’t forget the caterpillars. Maintain a steady population of butterflies throughout the summer and autumn by ensuring that their offspring has enough to eat, such as
swan plants for monarch caterpillars. ■■ Keep the garden insecticidefree. To avoid killing the insects you are trying to attract, use gentler alternatives to insecticides to keep nuisances at bay. Ladybugs are a great choice, as they are harmless to plants but get rid of aphids. ■■ Favour bright colours. Butterflies are especially attracted to yellow, pink and orange flowers.

Kokako Lodge is an 85 bed residential camp situated at the foothills of the Hunua Ranges Regional Park (Auckland’s largest park, at approximately 17 000 hectares). It was set up originally in 1990 by the Stuart Family but was later purchased by the Auckland Regional Council in 1995 and run by one of the local Park Rangers. In 2000 the Auckland Regional Council signed a lease agreement with the Kokako Lodge Trust to run the Hunua Environment and Outdoor Education Centre now known as Kokako Lodge. Kokako Lodge opened with a fantastic open day in the presence of the then Prime Minister Helen Clark. The Kokako bird is an inspirational New Zealand native bird which is fighting its way back from the brink of extinction and is renowned for the clarity and volume of its song which carries far across the forest. Male and female Kokako are similar in colour and size weighing about 230 grams. They protect their territory by singing and chasing away invaders and their diet consists of leaves, fern-fronds, flowers, fruit and invertebrates. Kokako Lodge offers a wide range of activities to meet the needs of your group. Activities are available as individual options or can be combined to create an action- packed programme. We believe sequencing activities gets the most out of both the activity and your group, so we aim to develop an activity plan that will maximise your group’s experience. Inkster claims international award S
aint Kentigern College has dominated the ASB Young Sportsperson of the Year awards this year with nine students receiving awards. One of them is 17-year-old showjumper Laura Inkster who claimed the international achievement Award and represented New Zealand at the FEI World Jumping Challenge held in Bulgaria earlier this year. Her Saint Kentigern College blazer is decorated with the badges of the people she met at the international event. The Clevedon equestrian has “quite a few” titles under her belt
including junior jumper of the year 2014 from the New Zealand Horse of the Year awards and is one of 10 in the national development squad of equestrians. She’s also busy preparing for the Taupo Christmas Classic just two weeks away as well as the next Horse of the Year Show held in Hastings in March next year. “I’m aiming for the lady rider and young rider of the year as well as the Norwood Cup [premier class winner]. It’s exciting. It’s good to have something to work towards,” says Laura. Other star sportspeople from East Auckland schools were also
recognised at the awards. From Saint Kentigern College: Christina Oscar (all rounder), Sydney Fraser (all rounder), Lance Watene (Service to Secondary School Sport), James Fouce (cycling), Isabella Richards (distance running), Dalton Papalii (rugby union), Connor Williamson (tennis), Brosnan Meleisea (touch). Howick College: Kayla Russell (mountain biking), Farrah Brill-Holland (underwater hockey). Macleans College: Nai Xin Jiang (table tennis), Sally Fu (badminton). Sancta Maria College: Tysaha Ikenasio (touch).

Heimgartner needs V8 Supercar sponsor for 2016 series By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Super Black Racing’s Andre Heimgartner is looking like top talent for next year, but there is one thing in his way. With only two weeks to go and offers from top teams, Heimgartner desperately needs sponsorship to continue in V8 Supercars next year. The youngest in the 2015 V8 Supercar series, 20-year-old Heimgartner has been likened to Kiwi greats such as Greg Murphy and Paul Radisich.
Racing for the Kiwi Super Black Racing team in Australia this year, Heimgartner has made a lasting impression and earned some impressive supporters, including Prodrive Racing Australia boss Tim Edwards. “He has traits that show me that he will be a race winner... he definitely has the raw speed, no doubt,” Edwards said. Heimgartner’s next challenge, however, is finding the sponsorship that teams are requesting for next year.
With a new manager Dale Brittain of automotive specialist agency DBC2, a unique idea has emerged to provide top returns to a partner and have full car coverage and dedicated promotional activity. Heimgartner’s mum Sheryl Heimgartner says that even though teams have shown interest in him, without the support of a sponsor, Heimgartner loses his chance to race in V8 Supercars again next year.
“A good team wants him, but nowadays drivers must establish partnerships with supporters themselves, and bring funds with them to get the drive. Usually, companies utilise it to provide sound commercial value,” she says. This realisation hit home last weekend when Heimgartner was benched for the weekend at Phillip Island when Super Black decided to test another driver, Chris Pither, who currently has more sponsorships than him.
“Obviously money is a big part of it nowadays, and I would assume what they’re doing with Chris Pither has something to do with that,” Heimgartner said. Despite the disappointment, Heimgartner is focused on proving his talent on the track. “I just need to get into a good car next year,” he says. ■ If you or anyone you know could provide contacts that may help, please call Sheryl Heimgartner on 021-915-850, or email sdgartner@gmail.com.
