I
t was the news that left Botany Downs Secondary College students reeling with frustration: NZQA’s latest round of mistakes made across all levels of this year’s examinations. On November 24, Year 12 student Kimberley Jayapalen sat the Level Two calculus and Level Two probability papers, only to receive a text from her tuition centre later that day, asking whether she had seen the reports about errors in examination papers. “I thought maybe it was the algebra exam because that’s the one I found difficult, but it turned out to be the two exams I thought I was doing okay in...I was completely freaked out about it, so
I checked online. It’s a national embarrassment,” she says. Year 12 student Idreis Abdo sat the same papers, and with future plans to study software engineering at university, the 17-year-old said he was very frustrated at the extra pressure put on students as a result of the mistakes. In addition to the Level Two papers, there have also been mistakes in an NCEA scholarship statistics exam, a Level One maths exam and a Level Three statistics exam. BDSC head of mathematics Irene Bennet hopes NZQA will make a strong effort to ensure no student is disadvantaged by discrepancies in exam papers. Mrs Bennet, who has been teaching at the college for nearly 10 years, was attending a course
offsite on the day of the Level Three statistics exam. When she returned to school, she was approached by distressed students who told her one of the questions kept coming up negative, so Mrs Bennet went into the classroom and asked the examiner if she could see the paper. “I looked at it and I thought – don’t tell me they made an error. “Some of my students were quite upset so I tried to reassure them, but unfortunately a couple of good students said they spent huge time on the question and in the end were too distressed to attempt the question.” Mrs Bennet still has faith in the NCEA system, but acknowledges there needs to be more of an effort made to avoid mistakes like this
from happening again for the sake of the students. “Even in our department, I always emphasise the importance of double checking tests and examination papers, and doing the papers ourselves to make sure they are error free. “It’s not fair to stress the students out during an exam. Sitting the exam is stressful enough for the students.” NZQA deputy chief executive Kristine Kilkelly apologised for the Level Three statistics exam error in a November 25 media release and said discrepancies in other papers were not expected to have affected students’ ability to answer the questions. NZQA is currently investigating how the errors occurred.

Countdown: Turinsky back in the game By Farida Master
M
ike Turinsky’s popularity is soaring thanks to good, oldfashioned political turmoil. He has gained good mileage out of the ugly crossfire between Howick Local Board chair David Collings and former local board member Lucy Schwaner, who surprised everyone with her resignation minutes after the official swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected board. While the Howick Local Board, Botany subdivision candidate Mr Turinsky is disappointed he missed a seat on the local board in the first round, he is not unhappy about his name regularly popping up in the aftermath of the local board election debacle. The announcement of Botany by-elections means that the youth worker and chief executive of Young Life NZ Trust has to once again start wearing out his shoes, door-knocking in Botany. But he seems to have taken it in his stride. With the by-elections estimated to top $100,000, Ms Schwaner has sug-

gested that Mr Turinsky - who finished fourth in the elections - be given a chance to fill in the vacancy unchallenged. That would save the taxpayers dollars, she said. It led the Labour party to angrily contest her claim. A press release that quotes Labour candidate for Botany, Mark Johnson, argued: “Ms Schwaner is evidently unaware how local politics work, if she thinks fewer candidates is the financial solution to the scandal she has created in
the Botany sub-division. This boondoggle will cost over twice the salary of a Howick Local Board member, regardless of how many parties contest the vacant seat.” Mr Turinsky didn’t respond to it! Instead he kept a low profile. But come November 24, the first official day for filing in nomination papers for by-elections, and he was present at the Ministry of Internal Affairs office in Manukau. Accompanied by his dad

who is visiting from Alaska, Mr Turinsky told the Times that having worked with the youth at Botany Downs Secondary College as well as at Pakuranga College and Edgewater College, over the years, he’s familiar dealing with the local board and council on matters relating to youth. “I am comfortable working with diverse groups,” he says. While the 43-year-old father-of-two is unaware of the number of candidates filing in their nomination for the by-elections in February 2017, he says he personally knows Labour candidate Mark Johnson. “We’ve both worked together at Botany College and I respect him,” he says graciously. “I’ve got high regards for him. He’s a nice guy.” It’s a welcome change from the free-for-all verbal boxing match at the boardroom drama. Having contested the elections three years ago, Mr Turinsky says his ideology of being ‘practical and not political’ would work well given the current scenario at the Howick Local Board.
Teen student to be charged after crash By Scott Yeoman A 17-year-old local high school student will be charged with drink driving after she crashed through two fences in Howick last week, stopping just short of a house (see above). She also struck two other vehicles during the incident, but it is not known if those vehicles were parked or driving. It was a close call for a family living on Ridge Road, with the teenager’s car ending up in their front yard, not far from the house, shortly before 11pm last Wednesday night. A police spokeswoman told the Times on Friday that the teenager would be charged with drink driving. In the meantime, her licence has been suspended for 28 days. The Times understands the teenage driver goes to a local high school. Police and the Fire Service attended the incident and no one is believed to have been injured. This incident comes after a car veered off Redoubt Road in Flat Bush on November 20 and travelled 10 metres across a paddock before colliding with the side of a two-storey brick house. The 19-year-old passenger of the car, Alexandra Van Den Bogaart, died at the scene after 15 minutes of CPR treatment. Redoubt Road residents are calling for safety measures following the fatal crash. The female driver – also 19 – was taken to hospital with moderate injuries. No one in the house was hurt.

Police confirm two more acts of indecency
News bites
Two more indecent acts reported, but at different locations By Scott Yeoman scott@times.co.nz
T
here have been two more reported incidents of men doing indecent acts in public – this time at Eastern Beach and Lloyd Elsmore Park. Last week, the Times reported that police had received two calls of a similar nature on the afternoon of November 24 regarding possibly two different males doing indecent acts while watching female beach users in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach. On Tuesday, police confirmed that two further incidents had been reported – the third at another beach and the fourth at a popular park. Inspector Jared Pirret said that on November 29 at about 4.40pm, a male was reported hiding in the bushes at Eastern Beach carrying out an indecent act. The offender was described as Caucasian in his early 30s and inspector Pirret said police were looking at the possibility of it being linked to one of the November 24 incidents at Mellons Bay Beach. Then on Friday (December 2) at around 6.30pm, a male
exposed himself to a victim as she walked through Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga. He was described as 25-30 years old and as having a medium build and short, dark coloured hair. Mr Pirret said the man was reportedly wearing a red coloured football-style shirt and light khaki pants. During both Mellons Bay Beach incidents on November 24, the males were observed by female beach users attempting to hide behind rocks or bushes while carrying out “an indecent act”. Police patrolled the Mellons Bay area following the reports but were unable to locate either male. Mr Pirret said at the time that it was unlikely that the same offender was responsible for both Mellons Bay Beach incidents as the descriptions supplied by the victims were very different. He said this week that police were making good progress with the two earlier incidents at Mellons Bay Beach and that enquiries were ongoing. “Patrols have been stepped up and our patrol partners (Crime Watch and the Asian Council on Reduc-
ing Crime) are also combing the beaches and parks,” Mr Pirret said. “We ask anyone who has any information that can assist police with these investigations to contact Ormiston Police station, or alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” Following the earlier two incidents, Mr Pirret said that women should not be using Mellons Bay Beach alone. “I would recommend that all females using the beach do not do so alone and if they are aware of any suspicious males or observe this type of behaviour to take a photograph of the offender if practical and call the police,” he said. “A good description, direction of travel, and mode of transport (vehicle or on foot) is essential to apprehending these offenders.” Mr Pirret said at the time that on both occasions, when confronted by the victims at Mellons Bay Beach, the males did not attempt to touch or talk to the victims and there was no attempt to abduct or coerce the victim in any way. But he stressed the importance of public safety. “Under no circumstances confront
these males.” Mr Pirret has also said that there is unfortunately a “seasonal trend” in which police see this type of offending occurring in the warmer weather and with more people using the beaches.

The BP service station on Pakuranga Road was robbed in the early hours of Monday morning. Three offenders arrived at the service station in a vehicle at about 4.15am and smashed their way into the store, a police spokeswoman told the Times. They made off with cigarettes and a number of other items, she said. The sole service station attendant on duty at the time was unharmed in the incident. The police spokeswoman said police were carrying out a number of enquiries into the incident on Monday, including obtaining CCTV footage. -Scott Yeoman

Modest Sharine rises to top in world for Professionals By NICK KRAUSE
GOOD SPIRIT: Christmas Then and Now presented by the Pakuranga Choral Society on Sunday, December 11 at 2pm in All Saints Church Howick. Photo supplied
It’s beginning to feel like Christmas A
s always, the Spirit of Christmas is alive and well with the society, and this year that spirit includes choir and children. Young people are always a vital part of Christmas cheer, and the Howick Primary School Choir under Christina Bevan are a special feature of this concert. The children present their own items, while the adult choir makes an exuberant start with Mendelssohn’s joyous “Vom Himmel Hoch”. The work of New Zealand composers form a significant part of the programme, with Jenny McLeod’s delightful “Sun Festival Carols”, written
for a Wellington Festival and David Hamilton’s fine cantata “What Sweeter Music”, bring the concert to an inspiring close. David is one of New Zealand’s leading composers and has written this piece specially for us. The choir is particularly fortunate to have David as guest conductor for this concert, and Principal Guest Conductor for future concerts. Two fine young soloists, Christina Orjis and Clinton Fung, also feature in this concert, with organist Michael Bell and pianist Val Sowerby. Christina has been in a workshop with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and
Dame Malvina Major and was a soloist in Wellington recently with Simon O’Neill. Clinton has also studied under Dame Malvina Major and has taken a lead in several recent and current opera productions. The concert is always one of the great features of the Howick Festive Season and the audience will be regaled at the interval with mince pies and mulled wine. Make a point of being there on Sunday December at 2pm. This concert is not to be missed. Adults $25 Seniors $20 Students $10 Tickets available at the door. Hal Marryatt
Sharine Burns is a farm girl from a small town with a School C education and she doesn’t mind letting people know that. She also seems to be one who shies away from the limelight which is difficult to do when you win a global award. Mrs Burns has become the Professionals International No 1 sales person in the world – quite a feat if you consider there are around 3500 agents under the Professionals real estate brand globally. Mrs Burns, 47, grew up in Warkworth and has been with the Professionals for seven years. Her husband Chris is from Pakuranga although the family – they have three children aged 10, 9 and 8 – now lives in Half Moon Bay. The ranking is simple – the brand takes into account the number of transactions and the amount of commission over the past financial year. Mrs Burns says she honestly doesn’t know the precise figures and would be reluctant to reveal them if she did know them. “It’s just not important... getting it wasn’t an aim, it wasn’t a focus,” she told the Times. “It’s probably lost on me. They should have given it to someone else.” She insists greater focus must be on the client. “I never intended to be No 1 in the world for my brand. The vendor, that’s my focus... dealing with people day to day,” she said. “My mission is simple - to do everything in the very best interests of my vendors and create raving fans.” She heaped praise on those around her.

“Something like this is not achieved on your own. I don’t believe anyone is a rock or an island. “I am surrounded by outstanding people…my husband who takes care of our girls and a lot of stuff at home, amazing grandparents who pitch in a lot, my PA Sheryl Flexman who is absolutely phenomenal and admin assistant Nicole Ward. “I have an outstanding interior designer that ensures my vendors are ready for photos and open homes, an amazing photographer, not to mention great colleagues and additional administrators/accounts people in our office.” But the self-effacing Mrs Burns likes to keep everything in perspective. “I’m not putting myself down but you’re only really as good as your last sale.”
Sharine Burns
Winner No.1 International Sales Agent 2016 In her first year in Real Estate, Sharine was named Rookie of the Year for Professionals NZ which was a massive achievement that marked the beginning of what was to come! From my discussions with her, her mantra is simple “to do everything in the best interests of her vendor” which in turn means her vendors consistently comment on a stress free process & outstanding results.
You can bring hope to life for people in need this Christmas When Trish and her daughter Sarah first came to The Salvation Army for help, they’d just slept under a bridge the previous night. That Christmas they faced the situation of being added to the growing number of Kiwi families who fall into severe poverty. But thanks to your support, the Sallies were able to provide a package of practical assistance such as temporary housing, food, budgeting and parenting help. This Christmas season, The Salvation Army will give care to more than 17,000 families, providing a wide range of support when it’s needed most. You can care for people like Trish and Sarah this Christmas. Please support our Christmas Appeal and bring hope to life for those in need.

Colin wins the big prize
We have a new laundromat in Moore street which is here to offer the service of your choice which includes self service and includes but not limited to pick up, delivery, self services or supported services at no extra cost if it is within 5km range of our shop (if further out normal charges per km will apply). Joseph (pictured), one of the directors, says “We are here for you so talk to us for advice. “You would be surprised at how little it costs to use our hygienic service and will free up your time. Come on — who really enjoys washing?!
The winner of the bed was Colin Zeff, a local resident. He spent his money in Spillers Hammer Hardware. Colin was certainly happy about his prize and even more surprised to hear that there were extra parcels to go with it from Howick businesses. The Business Association are delighted to work with the team at DreamBeds to be able to offer this fantastic prize to shoppers. This year it was a popular Midnight Madness promotion and there were a huge amount of entries. George Balani of DreamBeds says: “As always, an absolute pleasure to participate in the Midnight Madness event. The winner, Colin, has been in to the shop to try the bed, and will be receiving it this week! We wish he and his wife many marvellous sleeps to come, and look forward to next years’ Midnight Madness. Thanks to everyone who entered and all who contributed to making the prize even more special.”

inis were the first cars that stole Garry Robinson’s heart. These days, it’s Jaguars. A 1996 Jaguar XK8 Coupe, to be exact. The Carnival Red body glistens in the sunshine and its rims are almost shiny enough to see your reflection. Inside, it has a 4.0 litre V8 engine and a 5 speed automatic transmission. According to Mr Robinson, it’s a modern classic. He spent more than a year looking for one in good condition and with low mileage in this particular colour and finally found one for private sale on TradeMe which ticked all the boxes. “I like the look of the car, its colour, its shape and general design really appeal to me,” he said. Five years on from purchase and Mr Robinson is still perfectly content with the car. “If I won Lotto I might start to look around, but right now I’m happy with it,” he said. He used to enjoy driving it around, but these days he prefers to keep it for display purposes. “I try to keep it to 1000km a
year. It’s 20 years old and it’s done around 20,000km. “I used to enjoy driving it around but it’s too heartbreaking if someone dings it up at the shops.” Mr Robinson and his car will both be making an appearance at the Brit and Euro Car Show which will be held in March next year. Last year’s inaugural show drew around 480 classic cars to Lloyd Elsmore Park and 2017 looks on track to be just as popular , if not more. So far, there have been more than 316 registrations made up of a combination of clubs and individuals, however that number is likely to change. “Car clubs have to take a bit of a stab with numbers at the moment, so we ask them to firm up numbers a bit closer to the time.” For some, the interest in classic cars comes from nostalgia. “People have the opportunity to see the cars they grew up with and hear them, “Oh that’s what we had,, and see the cars [that were] driven when they were children,” said Mr Robinson. For others, the interest develops through motorsport. The Brit and Euro Car Show
aims to bring everyone from the keenest petrol head to a novice classic car fan together under a common interest. “It’s a fun, free day out east and a nice day out with the kids,” Mr Robinson said. “There will be many different British and European marquees on display from specialist manufacturers of expensive luxury cars to far more humble manufacturers.” The planning for next year’s show began in August this year and the committee meets roughly every two months to keep the wheels turning. The highlights of the show for Mr Robinson are simple things such as interacting with people on a common subject and of course the cars themselves. He might be a Jaguar man now, but there’s still room in Mr Robinson’s heart for the humble Mini. “I grew up loving Minis. My first car was an old school Mini. I still love Minis.” The 2017 Brit and Euro Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday 5 March 2017 between 10am and 3pm. Entry and registrations are free. Those interested can register their vehicles at https://briteurocarshow.nz.

A
stolen statue has been returned to its Farm Cove owner. Maria Ross told the Times in October how thieves had stolen a larger-than-life showpiece in front of her Fisher Parade home. The statue of Marilyn Monroe, a former Hollywood screen siren and model, stands at more than 1.8m (6 feet) and weighs around 80kg. Ms Ross said the “well-known and loved statue” was stolen from her home on either Thursday night (October 13) or Friday morning. “It would have taken two
or more people to get her into a truck or trailer,” she said. On Sunday night Ms Ross posted on social media: “OMG!!!!! Marilyn was dropped off tonight and as promised.... No Questions Asked!! “Reward Requested and I paid it.” She said the statue was a little bit worse for wear, with eyelashes cut off and a “few cuts n bruises”. “She is spilt down one side. They have obviously dropped her,” Ms Ross said.

An end of an era By Farida Master
‘I
t can’t be true! You can’t possibly go.’ ‘We are going to miss you terribly. Thank you for your service to the community,’ – are just some of the many messages that customers have signed at the reception area of the Somerville Clothing Alterations at the Somerville Shopping Court. Sitting amidst a line-up of Asian eateries, the closing of the clothing alteration shop is an end of an era. “We were the first in this area, 23 years ago. We were dress-makers as well. It was only eight years later that other alteration shops came up in Botany and Howick,” says seamstress and owner Samira Elias, for whom sewing has always been a passion. A pharmacist of 27 years in Iraq, she says the first thing she bought when she arrived in New Zealand was a sewing machine. “I bought a blanket later,” she laughs. “My entire life in New Zealand has been in this shop,” she says, getting emotional, as a stream of customers bring in chocolates, flowers, orchid plants, thank you notes and cards. “When I initially got a job here, just three months after living in this country, there was Ngaire Leaning who was working here. ness, I told Ngaire that if you stay, I will buy the business. She stayed for 19 years and retired only three years ago.” The 74-year-old says that at one time they had five people working at the clothing alteration shop. “I am finding it difficult to say no to customers who are still bringing along bagful of clothes to be altered. After all these years they are not just clients but dear friends. ” Mrs Elias says she’s had a customer who visited her from Australia after 12 years bringing in bags of clothes. “She got them all the way (from Australia) since she was an old client.” She shares similar anecdotes of clients from the South Island and other parts of the country who have moved residence but keep returning to her Gooch Place shop.
“There was a young man who walked in the other day and said he used to visit us with his mum and play with the toys in the basket whilst she got her clothes fitted,” she says. Expressing gratitude to all her customers for supporting her, the friendly needlewoman says she is closing shop only because it is difficult to keep long hours and get good help. “Currently it is just (staff member) Yasmin and me. There are times when Yasmin comes in at 6am and I sit up late till midnight. It’s because sewing is not a rushed job. You got to keep it neat and tidy.” Spending time with her grandchildren now takes priority. Meanwhile, a wine and nibbles get together has been organised at the shop on Saturday, just to say a big thank you to her loyal clients.
Over 400 families will spend this Christmas at a Ronald McDonald House, while their children receive specialist medical treatment. Drop a present into any of our offices from December 1-19, and we’ll make sure it gets to a deserving family.
Plus: Meet Miss Auckland and the Christmas Fairy Calling all children – Bring your donation gift into Ray White Howick or Ray White Botany on Saturday, December 17 and have your photo taken with Miss Auckland and the Christmas Fairy. They will also be giving out balloons and candy canes.
Miss Auckland will be at Ray White Howick, 12 Uxbridge Rd from 9-11am, then at Ray White Botany, 20 Crescent Lane, Botany Town Centre from 11.30am-1.30pm

Howick Santa Parade — Sunday, December 4, 2016
Times photos by Wayne Martin
They came, they saw, they cheered — tens of thousands basked in glorious sunshine at the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday. The masses were treated to more than 50 floats featuring community groups, schools, clubs, bands, day care centres and kindergartens as well as not-for-profit and commercial groups. And as always, Santa brought up there rear to the delight of the crowds. Meanwhile, judges found it difficult to choose the best entries from the Howick Santa Parade floats.

he 2016 Howick Carols by Candlelight – or rather now ‘Christmas by Candlelight’ – event presented by Howick Brass Inc. is set to deliver yet another memorable and totally free staged community Christmas concert to the public this December. The event is now morphing into Howick’s very own ‘Christmas in the Park’ with arguably a setting that can surpass all others - sitting atop Howick on Stockade Hill underneath the region’s famous illuminated Christmas Tree. In recent years Howick Brass has begun transforming this event from simply a ‘carol-singing’ event to that of a total festive musical package, all completely free to the community of Howick as we come together and celebrate this great time of year. The band look to further develop this concept in 2016 and transition to an exciting, entertaining and moving Christmas event to target all members of our vibrant community – not just those that like to sing! In previous years’ Howick Brass has pioneered new [relevant] sections within the event and explored various tonal and acoustic elements that playing in such a great location allows. At the 2015 event, WW100 was acknowledged with the story of the

WWI ‘Christmas Truce’ being woven into specially arranged carols and antiphonal effects across the hill. Small groups of ‘carolling’ brass musicians, bell players and military percussion – along with bass drums and pre-recorded sonic effects replicating artillery fire – were surreptitiously planted at locations across the hill to illustrate this moving story of peace at a time of immense global conflict. Howick Brass used a carefully planned acoustic sonic soundscape to capture the context of the WWI Christmas Truce, whilst our narrator told the moving story of this monumental occasion. In 2014 we used similar effects to create a NZ Christmas Soundscape based on NZ birdsong partnered with the carol The Holly and the Ivy. Once again, musicians were dotted around the perimeter of the audience and performed this soundscape by echoing one another across the hill – just as our native birds do on the dawning of a still NZ Christmas morning. This year Howick Brass looks forward to bringing a distinctly New Zealand flavour to the festive event with the performance of specially commissioned arrangements of NZ
This year Howick Brass looks forward to bringing a distinctly New Zealand flavour to the festive event with the performance of specially commissioned arrangements of NZ Christmas works from local (NZ) composers. Photo supplied Christmas works from local (NZ) composers. Included in these NZ works is the NZ Christmas Carol Te Harinui, commissioned by Howick Brass for the 2016 Christmas by Candlelight event from NZ composer Yvette Audain. We also pair celebrated NZ author Margaret Mahy’s evocative poem Christmas in New Zealand with works by NZ respected New Zealand composer and conductor Kenneth Young to deliver an evening of genuine New Zealand festive cheer. Of course the band couldn’t omit the usual festive favourites, with a stocking full of seasonal delights combined with exceptional soloists to rival the bright lights of the Howick Christmas Tree. ✦ Sunday December 18, Stockade Hill, 8.30pm

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, shallot and curry, and mix well. Set aside. In another small bowl, gently coat the diced avocados with lemon juice to prevent them from browning.
Ingredients ✦ 1/2 cup mayonnaise ✦ 1 shallot, finely chopped ✦ 1 tsp. of curry powder (or more, depending on your tastes) ✦ 2 avocados, pitted and diced ✦ 1 tbsp. lemon juice ✦ 1 cup crab meat (or imitation crab cut
Directions
Ingredients ✦ 2 cups all-purpose flour ✦ 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar ✦ 1/2 tsp. baking powder ✦ 1/2 tsp. baking soda ✦ 1/4 tsp. salt ✦ 1/4 tsp. allspice ✦ 1/8 tsp. ground cayenne pepper ✦ 1 1/4 cups buttermilk ✦ 1/4 cup butter, melted ✦ 1 egg, yolk and white separated ✦ Zest of 1 lemon ✦ 1 cup fresh cranberries (washed) or frozen (thawed)
Directions
Divide half of the diced avocados and spoon into four shot glasses (or small jars). Do the same with the crab. Add a second layer of avocado and crab in each glass. Sprinkle with mint or parsley. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes before serving.
Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk mixture and stir with a fork until all ingredients are mixed together. Add egg white and cranberries.
Heat oven to 200 °C. Lightly grease a 12cup muffin pan that’s roughly 6cm deep.
Pour the mixture into the muffin pan, filling each cavity 3/4 full.
In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, allspice and cayenne pepper and mix until evenly blended. In a small bowl, add buttermilk, butter, egg yolk and lemon zest, and beat until mixture is smooth. In a third bowl, whip up the egg white.
Bake until a skewered tooth pick comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Using a knife, unstick the sides of the muffins and remove from pan.

he St Andrew’s Big Band (a 25 piece youth jazz band made up of young musicians from the Eastern Suburbs) is preparing for its annual Christmas concerts with special guests, the Auckland Wind Orchestra. “This year we will be performing two concerts (2pm and 7pm) on Saturday, December 17,” said SABB musical director, Hamish Arthur. “And we’re raising funds for two organisations - Alzheimers NZ and Dementia Auckland - both of whom do wonderful work in our community.

St Mark’s Junior School performance a joy to watch The average age was seven-years-old and they didn’t miss a cue. ‘It was spot on and a joy to watch’ was the general consensus from the audience that watched the young actors perform on stage. St Mark’s Junior School celebrated the beginning of the Christmas Liturgical Season. This year’s theme was from the perspective
of a ‘grumpy’ innkeeper and his joy at the end when Jesus was born in his stable. Many hours of rehearsing, costume sewing and creating sets, resulted in an outstanding performance. Christmas Liturgy at St Mark’s Junior School Photo supplied

responsible for it. However, if getting a dog is something you have thoroughly investigated and would like to commence while you are home on holiday, I urge you to visit one of our three Auckland Council animal shelters to find one that would love a home.” “Better yet, visit in the new year when all the people who weren’t as responsible as you have realised their new puppy is more work than they anticipated and have given it up,” she says.
Advice for dog owners during the holidays If you are going away and taking your dog, remember that it will be in a less familiar environment and may not behave as you

hristmas is the most sociable time of the year and your dog loves all the attention, right? Well, maybe, but how do you know when she’s had enough and needs rescuing? Auckland Council Animal Management advisers say if your dog turns its head away, walks away from the attention, or looks to you while getting attention from someone else, they may be asking for help. “While your dog may be friendly and good with people and children most of the time, sometimes it can get too much for them,” says Tracey Moore, manager, animal management. “Even though they appear not to mind being cuddled and petted - or sat on - they are often just trying to be well behaved, despite being extremely uncomfortable.” Ms Moore advises dog owners to protect their pet at social functions. “Give them a break from children and/ or excessive excitement, even though they appear not to mind. Speak to children who may be new to your dog about how they should interact with it, and don’t leave children unattended with a dog,” she says. For people planning to surprise family with a cute puppy for Christmas, registered responsible dog owner and chair of Auckland’s Community Development and Safety Committee, Councillor Cathy Casey, advises caution. “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas. It will live for 15 or so years, and you are
might normally expect. If you leave it in a strange place, your dog may go looking for you, or try to find its way home. Make sure it is registered and microchipped so it can be found. If you are going away and not taking
your dog, here are a few points to remember: ✦ Make sure the person looking after your dog is ready for the commitment, understands your dog, and understands their responsibilities while the dog is in their care; ✦ Make sure the person looking after your dog has a way to contact you, and leave them with contact numbers for the council’s animal shelters and instructions to contact both you and the council if the dog goes missing - don’t wait until you are back from holiday; ✦ Make sure your dog is registered and microchipped before you go away, so that any council, vet clinic or welfare organisation can help return it safely.
EPA imports reindeer in time for Chistmas New Zealand will welcome a dozen reindeer in the lead-up to Christmas after a late application to import the animals from Scandinavian company, Red Nose. Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) chief executive, Allan Freeth, said the organisation fast-tracked the request under New Organisms regulations contained within the Hazardous Substances Act 1996. Dr Freeth said the reindeer would arrive daily in the 12 days before Christmas and depart the country on New Year’s Day. He understood the reindeer would be employed to deliver
Christmas food packs. “But only to the scientific community,” Dr Freeth said. EPA was happy to sign the reindeer off as unmanned aerial vehicles, whose low carbon hoof-print could be an important proof of concept tool within the airborne delivery space. He dismissed potential criticism that the last thing New Zealand needed was a bunch of Rudolphs in the sky. Rudolph #1 said by email the reindeer looked forward to visiting New Zealand, and had already had two New Year’s Eve party invites from locals. “Although English is our second
language, we’ve been happy to accept a New Year’s party invitation from your shy, retiring national bird, the Kea.Online research had confirmed the species were restrained, respectful of people and property, and at all time displayed the kind of exemplary behaviour that mirrored the reindeers’ own snow white reputation. On the other hand, they’d declined an invite to ‘party like it’s 1999’ from a group of Kiwi birds after further online research highlighted their reputation for vandalism, common theft, and general disorder. Dr Freeth said

ringing the community together was Christmas@Sunkist on Saturday, December 3. Organised by the Beachlands Community Trust, an air of festivity lined the streets as families, friends and neighbours enjoyed a catch-up at the Beachlands Santa Parade. There was a line-up of excited children waiting to pose with Santa at the Santa’s Grotto housed in the Log Cabin. The mood was upbeat with plenty of lollies given away. A taekwondo demo, cardboard sliding at the Sunkist Hill, Christmas carols, pony rides and a talent quest made sure everyone was amply entertained. Line dancers and Beachlands School kapa haka, topped by a Christmas Concert added a special touch to the grand occasion.

Co-owners, Chris Harris and Juliet Monaghan love their annual Christmas party because they can have some fun with their all-important customers and the staff members get in the swing of things. “We love the idea of collecting gifts, it’s been a tough year for a lot of families and it’s important to help out when you can,” says Chris. “We hope our community will be generous, we have in-store surprises to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. “It is our way to thank everyone for their support.”
he FreshChoice elves are dusting off the tinsel and bringing out the candy canes as they prepare for the annual FreshChoice Christmas
party. Mark your calendar now because from 12noon to 6pm on Saturday December 10 the store is celebrating in style. The FreshChoice Christmas tree is ready and waiting for donated gifts for the less fortunate. Party guests are invited to bring along a gift to pop under the tree and FreshChoice will deliver them to the local Salvation Army. Please don’t wrap gifts as the Salvation Army works with families to select the most appropriate gift for children and this also empowers the parents and guardians. The Christmas party is always a popular event – shoppers will be entertained with Christmas carols, face-painting, lots of fabulous tastings, interesting demonstrations and loads of giveaways. Guests can try samples from all sections of the store, there is sure to be something to please everyone. Serious Popcorn will be popping corn

Plan ahead to ease financial stress this Christmas With the festive season upon us, new research has revealed almost one third (31per cent) of New Zealanders feel more financially stressed this Christmas than in previous years. The Mastercard-commissioned consumer research on Christmas shopping habits found that while 58 per cent of people plan to spend about the same on Christmas, 29 per cent will choose to spend less this year to reduce their December costs. People planning to spend less said the main reason for doing so was having less disposable income (56 per cent) or that they have budgeted to spend a certain amount (34 per cent). “It’s great that many Kiwis are taking practical steps to reduce the impact the Christmas season has on their finances,” says Peter Chisnall, country manager for Mastercard New Zealand and Pacific Islands. “Ways to ease the holiday pressure include saving or spreading purchases
throughout the year, and for others reducing the number of gifts purchased or setting a smaller budget can go a long way to making the silly season more enjoyable. “The key thing is to have a practical approach and plan ahead.” In order to cut back on costs, New Zealanders are spending less on gifts for their parents and in-laws, with almost half of New Zealanders saying they will only spend up to $50 on their parents, compared to 20 per cent spending that amount in 2015. Sixty per cent of Kiwis are also planning to spend under $50 on their siblings, compared to 35 per cent in 2015. And 35 per cent of Kiwis said they had been saving for Christmas throughout the year, however 31 per cent rely on their November and December pay cheque to fund Christmas. “Christmas costs can add up when you combine gifts, travel and food, which can mean the holiday period can be the most
financially stressful time of year for many. The reality of Christmas is that expenditures increase over this period, so having a clear strategy around how to manage your money makes a big difference,” says Chisnall. Half of respondents, up slightly on 2015, will be limiting their gifts to one to five people this Christmas, with a third planning gifts for six or more people. Women are more than twice as likely as men to purchase gifts for more than 11 people – 8 per cent of men versus 23 per cent of women. Not surprisingly, children continue to be an expense for parents with 20 per cent planning to spend $200-$300 on gifts for each child. Kiwis plan to spend the least amount of money on friends and extended family members, with 71 per cent only planning to spend up to $50 on friends and 66 per cent planning to spend that amount on extended family. Overall, half of New Zealanders expect

Fuelling a quest for learning Children of nine Auckland schools will receive funding toward new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects after receiving a share of $100,000 raised by Caltex customers in this year’s ‘Fuel Your School’ initiative. Willowbank School is one of the schools that will receive up to $5,000 for a variety of STEM projects. Principal of Willowbank School, Tina Joshua-Bargh, says the students and staff of Willowbank School are excited to be awarded the Caltex grant in support of our project, ‘Growing Green!’ “We plan to continue our ‘Enviro School’ learning journey by building a Greenhouse from sustainable materials in an easily accessible area of the school,” she says. “Our students will lead every aspect of the planning and building of the greenhouse and will further their learning by investigating which plants to grow and how best to grow them.” Students will also provide Auckland Council (Botany/Howick) with seedlings and young plants to Greenmount Park, ensuring that this area becomes a prominent area, regularly visited by our community, she says. Jeremy Clarke of Caltex says the `Fuel Your School’ program is a reflection of Caltex’s mission to encourage New Zealand children to engage with technology and the sciences. “Caltex thanks every customer who helped bring this project to life for the second year running. STEM is an area of education that Caltex feels particularly passionate about, with its potential to change people’s lives for the better. “We are now able to support 23 schools with an array of projects.”

The full page advertisement by the National Party published in the Times on November 17 describing the financial success for NZ is, in my opinion, propaganda. It cannot hold true when so many essential services are being run down by the lack of money. A surplus can only be true if you have maintained public services to a level whereby people are not disadvantaged and possibly be unable to receive skilled medical treatment. The police, health services, education and housing are all failing and for this National Government to attempt bribery and publish misleading information is something to remember for the elections next year. Whilst walking up the walkway from the Half Moon Bay ferry to Compass Point (on Friday) at 5pm, the ferry crane was being repositioned from where it is working on the new ferry pontoon. It has been left hovering and swinging over the community/public walkway on Compass Point. Commuters were then unable to walk on the pathway and detoured onto the street. This appears to me to be a health and safety issue, having large swinging chains over a public pathway, frequented by many commuters, families with children and local residents.

Peter Armstrong of the Pakuranga Rotary Club, which oversaw the foundation of our club 15 years ago, spoke of the close affiliation between Rotary and its “ offspring” Probus and why, in 2001, Rotary was keen to establish another Probus club in this area. They were presented with Probus rosettes to mark the occasion and to show the club’s appreciation of their contribution to the continuing success of our club. Re “Need signs in Mandarin” (Times, December 1). To me this letter has racial overtones as Mandarin speakers only make up a small percentage of beachgoers (for whom) English is not their first language. Can you imagine if we had all signs, including road signs, displayed in all the main languages. NZ fishing rules are strict (about) liability and there is no requirement to place signs at every beach or boat ramp. It is the responsible of fishers, including new settlers, to learn our fishing rules as they do the road rules if the drive in NZ. Barry Wood Cockle Bay

Poachers? Just call fisheries As a resident of Eastern Beach for 38 years, I can assure Mr Hollis (Times, December 1) only a very small percentage of Mandarin speaking residents take cockles from Eastern Beach which is closed to gathering shellfish. Regarding the signs, there are three signs over a metre high written in four lan-
guage’s including Mandarin at both ends of the beach and one opposite Eastern Beach Rd and there are also 3 universal type signs with shellfish in a circle with a diagonal line through it. The numerous smaller signs placed along the beach contain information where you can scan the QR code or text the word “app” to 9889 which can be translated. If Mr Hollis or anyone observes cockles being taken illegally, they should ring the poacher line which is 08004POACHER or 0800476 224 which is on the signs so fisheries officers can take the appropriate action or just have a polite word with them. Kiwis are considering investing in a bach or holiday home,” says Brendon. “But Kiwis who were looking to buy a holiday pad in the Coromandel in November may have struggled to find one, as the region recorded a drop in new listings in this region,” says Brendon. Coromandel registered a significant drop in new listings in November, down 39 per cent compared to the same time last year. Coromandel, Marlborough and Nelson all recorded sizeable spikes in the average asking price in November, when compared to the previous month (up 8.4 per cent, 8.2 per cent and 17.4 per cent
respectively).
Supply and demand hot in the regions The Manawatu/Wanganui region continues to be in hot demand. In November, the region recorded New Zealand’s highest percentage increase of new property listings compared to the same month last year. The 17.1 per cent jump in new listings was not at the expense of price. The region saw the average asking price hit $291,292. “Remarkably, properties are turning over more quickly in this region compared to Auckland,” says Brendon.
In Auckland, it would take 14 weeks to clear all current property listings. “The average asking price in Auckland is growing at a more modest pace, while properties are taking
longer to turn over. “If this trend continues, there will be more choices available for Auckland buyers in the foreseeable future.”
JH10924
T
he New Zealand housing market has settled into a typical pre-Christmas pattern, as Kiwis turn their focus to the upcoming holiday period. Real-time market statistics from realestate.co.nz for the past three months (ending November 30) show a comparative cooling in demand across the main centres – most noticeably Auckland. Demand is measured by the average number of views per listing for September, October and November 2016 which are then compared to the same period in 2015. “Auckland was the only region across the country where demand is down on the same period last year,” says realestate.co.nz CEO Brendon Skipper. Demand in the region dropped 8.1 per cent, compared to the same time last year. The average asking price in Auckland went up just 0.4 per cent in November, compared to the previous month. Despite this slower rate of growth, asking prices in the region hit another record high of $947,141. “A slowing rate of growth and a decrease in demand means properties in Auckland are sitting on the market for longer. In turn, this means more options for buyers.”

Local schools fare well at awards night E
ast Auckland schools were well-represented at Saturday’s national awards for educational excellence. A number of local schools scooped up the gold at this year’s prestigious International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) awards night. The national ceremony, held at The University of Auckland on Saturday 3 December, celebrated students who placed first in New Zealand in their chosen paper and age group from the ICAS assessments, which attract more than two million student entries across more than 20 countries annually. Elim Christian College and Macleans College were two of the only schools to be represented by three students on the night. Elim Christian College’s Tyler Wolsky (year seven) and Joshua Browne (year eight) took out top places in Digital Technologies, and year 13 student Elizabeth Pace was awarded top place in English. Thirteen-year-old Mr Browne said he was “pretty overwhelmed” when he heard the news. The budding inventor has been sitting ICAS exams since year four, but this is the first time he’s received a gold medal for his achievement.

Speed is the single biggest road safety issue in New Zealand today. There has been a serious accident almost every year in the Pakuranga/ Edgewater district since 2011, and high speed has been a factor in all of them. All of these accidents have been on urban roads. The faster you drive the more horrific the injuries in the event of a road crash. In fact, a pedestrian hit at 70km/h has a 96% chance of dying, compared with 40% at 50km/h, and only 5% at 30km/h*. Being part of a community includes looking out for each other and sharing the roads. There is a huge

“I think mum’s probably going to frame it,” he joked. Mr Wolsky, who also sat the Mathematics and Science ICAS papers this year, said he couldn’t be more excited after reaching the number one spot in the country for his age group. It’s a remarkable achievement, and one that Wendy Potter, Head of Intermediate at Elim College, said she is very impressed with. “I’m very proud of them. They’re stunning students – [the results] don’t surprise me at all.” It was a clean sweep for
Macleans College on the night, with year 10 student William Han placing first in Digital Technologies, Mathematics and Science, year 11 student Mrday Ramesh placing first in Science and year 11 student Nicholas Ye placing first in Mathematics. Other East Auckland schools represented were: Pakuranga College (Samuel Chen, Mathematics), Saint Kentigern’s College (Andrew Chen, Science), Our Lady Star of the Sea (Sofia Olan, Spelling), Howick College (Emily Bennett, Writing) and Sancta Maria College (Elizabeth Leaning, Writing).

impact on family and friends when loved ones are killed or seriously injured. Driving at a safe speed for various road conditions means the likelihood of a road crash causing injury to yourself and others is markedly reduced. Let’s tackle the problem together by driving to the conditions, and staying within the speed limit. Pakuranga United Rugby Club are doing their bit to help change the culture of speeding. Please join them in creating a positive behaviour change in our area.
A hard working group of Year 9 Mission Heights Junior College students are recipients of this year’s Ros Nicholson Award for Native Ecology from the Howick Local Board. Throughout this year, students have been taking part in a wide range of conservation activities in the forest area at the back of their school and in other bush remnants in the Mission Heights area. Regular rubbish clean-
ups, stream monitoring and testing, native tree planting and animal pest control have been a key areas of their work. Established by the Howick Local Board the award honours Ros Nicholson, a local teacher and veteran environmental campaigner, who had a passion for nature and its preservation. As a tribute to Ros, the award aims to support and encourage young people who carry forward conservation
values in the Howick Local Board area. “One of Ms Nicholson’s key ideals was to encourage young people in the community to appreciate, understand and respect conservation and heritage,” says Howick Local Board chair, David Collings. “It is very appropriate the board continues to honour her legacy and the work she did. I’m sure she would be very pleased with the efforts of this year’s recipients.”

firsts – Howick would go on to beat the Saints 2-0 and win the Bev Smith Memorial Tournament, claiming their first ever tournament win. The victory was an emotional one for the Howick premier women and their supporters, with Bev Smith’s daughter Michelle and her sister-in-law Stefanie Smith (married to Bev’s son Cam) members of the team. The tournament organisers are still counting the money raised over the weekend, but they are hoping there will be between $1500 and $2000 to donate towards breast cancer research. Bev Smith died aged 47 of breast cancer in 2008. This was the tournament’s ninth year.

Howick, meanwhile, had to reach the final the hard way – by beating the Waitakere Bears (the winner of the other semi-final). The hard-fought game was still tied 0-0 at the bottom of the seventh innings and that’s when Howick managed score the winning run and secure a place in the final. Benefits of meditation For thousands of years many people have benefited from meditation. It is used as a stress reduction tool, lowers blood pressure, and also improves a person’s overall health. Studies show that meditation improves both physical and emotional responses to stress. Those who meditate can choose among a wide range of practices, both religious and secular. One of the practices that are common is a focus that shuts out the external world and encourages a stilling of the mind. I am keen to bring these services, which is available for free to the public. The guided meditation that will be introduced helps one feel light when their inner space is unrestricted from trapped emotions, afflictions, and various habitual conditionings. There will be deep cleansing at the emotional, cellular and spiritual levels The Mohanji Team have started a movement throughout the world, where people from different countries are holding sessions to the public, so that many people can benefit on the path of love and light. Mohanji is an enlightened Master of Indian decent. His teachings are universal, which embodies love, kindness, acceptance and faith that are non- denominational, as many of his disciples are Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Muslim and various other faiths. Mohanji offers a part of him to you and expects nothing in return as this meditation was given to him by higher masters. No money, no devotion, no forcing a change in your lifestyle, no choosing him as Guru. He just asks for you to accept this gift with an open mind so that we many continue in the path of love, light and peace. This is one of his experiences in the Sai Temple

Parker must fight smart
TIMES FISHING GUIDE:
Agnew’s Angle the same reach, Parker has an 8cm advantage. That is something he will need to use behind a snappy left jab rather than standing toe to toe and engaging in a two-fisted slugfest he adopted when narrowly outpointing Carlos Takam. There were occasions in that fight when Parker’s stamina was put to the test before he demonstrated his courage to deservedly score a close-fought contest. I doubt if Ruiz’s defence is better than that of Takam’s. But he’s a tough guy who punches harder. He’s also engaged worldrenowned trainer Abel Sanchez to prepare him for this WBO title fight at high altitude. Sanchez doesn’t suffer fools and Ruiz has shred a lot of kilos to be in the best shape of his life. Parker’s trainer Kevin
Barry has not trained the swag of world champions Sanchez has. The closest he’s come was when David Tua was outpointed over 12 rounds by Britain’s Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas on November 11, 2000. However Barry knows his stuff, having been trained by his highly-respected Christchurch father leading up to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where he won the light-heavyweight silver medal when Evander Holyfield was disqualified for hitting him on the break and sitting him on his pants. Having made Tua a contender, Barry’s dream is to go a step further with the gifted Parker whose confidence has grown following his win over Takam and an early TKO over giant Alexander Dimitrenko, whose heart failed to match his physique. Parker’s left hook is sharp but is not as lethal as Tua’s was. However he is much taller, enjoys a longer reach, fires fast combinations to
the body and head and has a better right hand. Whether he can take a punch as well as Tua remains to be seen. Ruiz has the ammo to ask the question and most likely will. Being patient, staying cool under fire and being prepared to defend when necessary could be vital to Parker’s success if Ruiz makes his customary storming start. That will be what Barry will urge of an exciting young protégé who has prospered nicely under his guidance and that of the management of Duco Events promoters Dean Lonergan and David Higgins Both Parker and Ruiz are two worthy young contenders with each having the knockout power to lower the boom and claim the WBO crown. May the best man win, so long as it is Parker. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

MASSAGE
The sports programme at Mission Heights Junior College (MHJC) in Flat Bush is getting stronger every year and the school’s cricket teams are leading the way. In 2016, the MHJC premier boys cricket team competed in Saturday school cricket for the first time and won their junior ‘A’ competition. Captain Harvir Singh-Birl, who scored a century in the second game of the season, was a standout performer throughout. MHJC’s year seven and eight team also had plenty of milestones to celebrate this year, finishing fourth in Auckland in the Active Post Cup and narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Tannin Khurana scored a half century for MHJC in the semi-final. There are also six Manukau Districts Cricket representative players at the school – Tannin Khurana, Azhar Lambat, Harjot Singh Darni, Max Herbert, Devon Murdoch and Benson Ireland. MHJC attributes much of its cricket success to coach Shoruban Pasupati. Mr Pasupati was named Auckland Cricket Club Coach of the Year for the 2015/16 season and has been coaching at MHJC for the last two years. The school also attributes its 2016 achievements on the cricket field to the “enthusiastic and talented group of young cricketers” taking part and the ongoing, solid support from parents – a good sign for organised sport at the relatively new school.

I
f Joseph Parker is to become the first New Zealand-born fighter to win a world professional heavyweight crown at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Saturday night he will need to box smart instead of engaging in a slugfest with dangerous Mexican Andy Ruiz Jr. Both are personable characters outside the ring who don’t engage in the sort of trash talk that made Mike Tyson the self-proclaimed “badest,” even before he bit off more of Evander Holyford’s ear than he could chew when disqualified in their June, 1997, WBA title fight in Los Vegas. Inside it, however, both Parker and Ruiz have the killer instinct, punching fast and with power to record imposing knockout records; Parker winning 19 of 21 inside the distance and Ruiz 19 of 29. As professionals, both are unbeaten. At 27, Ruiz is three years Parker’s senior. But at 1.93cm tall and with

The Condor Sevens – New Zealand’s national secondary school sevens tournament – was held at Sacred Heart College from December 2-4 and featured three Howick College teams. The open girls team won all three pool games comfortably, beating Rangitoto College (46-7), Wesley College (19-0) and Feilding High School (29-7). Their winning spree came to an end in the cup quarter-finals, however, losing to Motueka High School 12-17. Howick College went on to win the open girls plate semifinal 31-5 against Southern Cross Campus and the plate final 26-4 against Christchurch Girls’ High School.
