STOP GO: A single lane section of Gossamer Drive repair work has been reversed to make it easier for motorists accessing Pakuranga Road.

Major road repair moves on C

RACKING and rutting on a busy thoroughfare is being repaired. However the resulting hold-ups have been frustrating motorists. The work at Gossamer Drive is under way to rehabilitate the road pavement which, Auckland Transport (AT) says, is cracking and rutting in a number of locations. The project is expected to be completed by April 8. However, AT acknowledges that detours have caused some difficulties, particularly with vehicles attempting to turn right out of Johns Lane into Pakuranga Road. Changes were implemented dur-

ing Waitangi weekend (February 7-8) with the direction of flow in the single lane section reversed to eliminate the need for the right turn. A number of alternatives are available, depending on the origin and destination required, an AT spokesman says. “It is not possible to signpost all of these because of the variety of trips involved. So drivers should plan ahead by researching alternative routes and leaving ahead of schedule to allow for a longer travel time. “Travellers should also look out for notification of the planned switch on the single lane section, and adjust their routes accordingly. The pavement structure is being

strengthened to carry the expected traffic loadings, the spokesman says. But there are no plans to widen or otherwise upgrade the road to serve a different function. The design life of pavements is normally 25 years, he says, and the new Gossamer Drive pavement is designed for the expected traffic volume during the next 25 years. “The current work is part of this renewal cycle. The rehabilitation has been divided into two sections requiring different treatments because of underlying ground conditions. Section one, from Pakuranga Road to just past Portadown Avenue, includes removing the existing pave-

Subsoil drainage will be installed over the full length of the section, followed by foam bitumen stabilising and chip sealing, along with asphalt surfacing and line marking. Stop/Go controls, rather than closing a lane, will be used on section two. Assuming there is no disruption caused by weather, section one is expected to be stabilised and chip sealed by February 20, followed by section two on March 16. The site will be opened for traffic after chip sealing during a 15-day curing period and the whole site will then be surfaced with asphalt. The overall project is programmed to be complete by April 8.

ment and underlying soft material to about 0.5 metres, digging out further where necessary to remove soft spots, and replacing with sound aggregate. Subsoil drainage will be installed on both sides. Foam bitumen stabilising and chip sealing will follow along the full length of section one and the work will be completed with asphalt surfacing and line marking. It has been necessary to close one lane at a time to allow for the deep excavation, the spokesman says. Section two runs from the end of section one to just beyond Ussher Place. Because the underlying material is better, it does not require deep excavation.

ITH smart phones being a live extension of ourselves, one of the cardinal rules of online social presence is to have a well practised pout, know your best camera angle and for goodness sake keep up with the Joneses of the world or at least pretend to! You never know when you are going to be shot — which is always! Am talking about the triggerhappy iPhones that have almost become a part of our DNA! This, I discovered on my recent trip to India. A quiet time with old friends had everyone clicking pictures on their iPhones. Blissfully oblivious that the selďŹ es had been posted on Facebook, I was a little taken aback with a ood of messages and calls from old mates telling me off for not informing them I was

The same shebang followed at another private do, where friends came dressed like they were straight out of a photoshopped fashion spread and got pouting n’ posting even before the party got rolling! Without wanting to sound like a snob, I must admit that while everyone seemed to be on the amazing race to post-our-mugshots-on-Facebook, I felt positively exposed! Being tracked by acquaintances, colleagues, family, friends and virtual strangers who knew where I was, whom I was seeing

With even the latitude and longitude details from photographs being traced, there was no room for privacy or any face time off. When I dared to request the smartphone addicts not to post a group picture, they looked at me as if I’d lost it. In a narcissistic, celebrity endorsed ‘all-about-me’ world, taking self portraits and posting them seems as natural as breathing and who was I to deny them their basic bragging rights? When the principal is new boy at school By FARIDA MASTER

M

ONDAY morning, whilst getting dressed for the first day at school, Ian Dickinson’s son gave him some sage advice. As the newly appointed principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary School, Mr Dickinson slipped on his new suit and tie, John, his 12-year-old, briefed him: “Every time principal Ginty Bigwood wore a new tie, he’d tell us a story behind it. I think you should do it too!” Taking his advice on board, Mr Dickinson told the school assembly a story about his new tie, on his first day at school. “You don’t want to know the story, but one of the class 8 students did tell me it was a good story,” laughed the 42-year-old principal. Mr Dickinson arrived in New Zealand from the United Kingdom eight years ago and was first associated with Baverstock Oaks School before he was appointed deputy principal at Bucklands Beach Intermediate six years ago. While the new principal of Pigeon Mountain says he felt like the new boy on his first day at school, he’s familiar with the school across the fence. “I’ve had some history with the school. Besides, being a part of the

neighbouring school, all my three kids studied here and my wife was a former teacher in this school. “Though I am the last person in the family to be connected with it, I do know quite a few of the staff members and teachers because of my wife and children.” The man of the moment at Pigeon Mountain admits that the night before the first day at school, felt like a sleep before Christmas. “I slept soundly through the night, though I was really excited and looking forward to meeting everyone the next day.” Apart from visiting every classroom and getting to know the students, teachers and parents, he introduced himself to every new five-year-old starting school that day and reassured them saying: “If you feel lonely or afraid, just go and talk to the children in the green uniform. They will look after you.”

His office door that is always open speaks volumes about his accessible personality that welcomes everyone in its fold. “Some of the younger kids still think that Ginty has gone fishing and will come back, so I am getting to know them,” he smiles. Passionate about his new job, Mr Dickinson is grateful that he’s inherited the best possible learning environment with the finest staff, property and students. “I am reaping the fruits of the former principal Ginty Bigwood’s labour and all the hard work he’s put into the school. I value the legacy that he’s left behind. “The school board has been very strategic and forward-thinking. “It’s good to be back in a primary school of 462 students,” he enthused. “It’s a lot of responsibility but I look forward to the new experience and challenge. It’s like commencing a new journey. “Life doesn’t stand still and that’s what I love about change. It’s so exciting.” NEW TIES: The new principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary, Ian Dickinson, is excited about the change and challenges of leading the school. Times photo Wayne Martin

Club has never owned the land

I WRITE again in respect of the proposed BP Oil Service Station at 332 Pakuranga Road. Thank you for the correction printed in the Howick and Pakuranga Times on January 26. However I take issue with comments printed on page two in the article entitled ‘Ownership questioned’. Further inaccurate comments about the Pakuranga Bowling Club have been made. I quote: The Times has referred again to the Auckland Council’s report. The report clearly states that the 2675 square metre property at 330 Pakuranga Road was the former site of the Pakuranga Bowling Club which has relocated to Sir Lloyd Drive in Pakuranga Heights. There is also reference in the final paragraph commenting that my club operated from the site in Pakuranga Road. I have spoken with Sir Barry Curtis, former Mayor of Manukau City. He informed me that in 1982, as a councillor prior to becoming mayor, he was instrumental in the formation of what became the ‘Pakuranga

Combined Bowling Club’, now the Pakuranga Bowling Club (Inc). The club was created by interested people who responded to an advertised campaign by Sir Barry, to form a

new bowling club on farmland which was then being developed as Lloyd Elsmore Park. These new Club members developed the land into four bowling

greens and later constructed the existing clubhouse on the site. Sir Barry quite emphatically told me that the Pakuranga Bowling Club did not exist until it was formed in

1982 and certainly did not operate from, or own any land in Pakuranga Road. Accordingly, I respectfully suggest that once again the article on page 2 of the Times is inaccurate and again misleading, suggesting that the Pakuranga Bowling Club formerly occupied the land in Pakuranga Road. If there is some Auckland Council record of a bowling club existing in Pakuranga Road, it certainly was as far as I can ascertain not the Pakuranga Bowling Club. One of the members of my club has told me that he understood there might have been an ‘indoor bowling club’ (which has nothing to do with my club) that may have operated from the site at 330/332 Pakuranga Road and then moved to where an indoor bowling club is operating from in the Pakuranga Community Hall in Pakuranga Road. Several members also commented that they believed the Pakuranga Park Village may have had a bowling green adjacent to Pakuranga Road where, at that time, the front entrance to the village was located. Ferry terminal timeline

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 12, 2015 — 5

EVELOPMENT of a new passenger ferry facility at Half Moon Bay is on schedule, with an expected completion date of November next year. The Howick Local Board voted at its monthly public meeting in October, 2014, to allocate up to $2.5 million from its transport capital fund toward the infrastructure project. Its members also passed a resolution requesting Auckland Transport (AT) investigate a possible subsidy to the project from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The board’s spending is subject to AT allocating at least $1m toward the development, which includes a new pontoon and ferry passenger waiting area. A report on the ferry terminal construction project provided to the board before its meeting last Monday states that development will likely be split into two separate phases. The ďŹ rst includes design and fabrication of the pontoon and gangway. The second stage comprises design and construction of a marine wharf and other remaining marine requirements, as well as design and construction of landside works for access and improved passenger transport facilities. Stage two, particularly construction of the wharf, is subject to assessment of the work’s possible environmental impact. The report also states that the results of a marine survey carried out as part of the terminal development project will inform the design process. Local iwi groups have been advised of the project plan and

are being contacted to establish whether they have a special interest within the area. The board was given a verbal update on the ferry terminal’s progress from AT project director for PT Capital Improvements, Nick Seymour, at its monthly meeting last Monday. “We expect to hear back by the end of this week and it’s all looking very positive, Mr Seymour said, about the prospect of an NZTA

subsidy. “This ferry facility is based on the one at Hobsonville [West Auckland] and the concept does work. “Discussions with users and operators have started. “We expect that from AprilJune the fabrication work will be done of the gangway and pontoon and design of landside works from April-May. “We are still heading toward a

LOVERS should be buoyed by the fact that the cost of celebrating Valentine’s Day in the super-city is the second lowest out of seven New Zealand metropolitan areas surveyed. The average cost of the special day in Auckland is $148, pipped only by Hamilton at $137. The most expensive place is Wellington at $171, according to a cost of living analysis by EliteSingles. However, it’s not all ďŹ nancial drain. According to Statistics New Zealand, the average price of a box of chocolates falls every February, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Despite this sweet news, the survey reveals that 61 per cent of the people surveyed admitted to being relieved by their single status on Valentine’s Day if it meant they could avoid having to organise (and pay) for an evening out. In further damnation of the day, 30 per cent of singles who were casually dating someone admitted they only celebrate the day grudgingly in order to appease their lover. The cost of living analysis shows that a typical Valentine’s Day date of dinner for two, a bottle of BYO wine (plus corkage), movie tickets and a short taxi ride home costs Kiwi singles an average of $158, or $10 more than the average Auckland cost.

completion date of no later than November, 2016. Board member Steve Udy said: “It’s nice to see this get started at long last. “It’s a positive development within the transport mess we have out here. “This is a small ray of sunshine and I think it’s great to look forward to the 2016 deadline. “A lot of people said this would never get off the ground.

New ground at Macleans By Daniel Silverton

M

ACLEANS College is undergoing a major sporting revolution. A multimillion dollar artificial turf is being installed at the school, which will be the home ground for its top rugby and football teams. The surface is being constructed along Macleans Road, adjacent to the hockey and netball courts. A new cricket oval with grass pitch is also being created behind the artificial turf, which the school’s First XI will move to next summer. “This dual purpose rugby and soccer artificial turf will allow the

school to have all-round access to a first class sporting facility... [and] will greatly enhance the sports programme at the school, says principal Byron Bentley. The project has been in the pipeline for more than two years, with construction starting prior to Christmas and expected to be completed in April. It was initiated to increase the number of hours students can access sports fields, regardless of the outdoor conditions. “We have a school of 2600 students and huge pressure on our grounds, says Mr Bentley. “Our main sports grounds are also our main physical education classrooms, and we also have students playing on them at

lunchtimes and interval, as well as sports training. “We often have ground closures and less than adequate grounds because of wet weather. The turf is being built by Auckland Civil, which was responsible for the construction of the artificial football grounds at William Green Domain in Highland Park. Macleans met the clubs which use that ground, and also spoke with colleges from around the country which have installed similar surfaces. Among them was St Peter’s in Newmarket which laid a turf in 2012 that revitalised its field known as The Cage.

“There was a lot of consultation with other schools and community organisations, says Mr Bentley. “They are all delighted with [artificial turf]. The surface will comply with both FIFA and World Rugby performance specifications, piquing the anticipation of the school’s rugby and football players and coaches. “They’re excited about it, says Mr Bentley. “It will make a huge difference to what can be provided. We have lots of teams, so we want to be able to cater to them. The project is costing more than $2 million, funded by the school’s board of trustees.

other and daughter real estate team, Anne-Marie and Victoria Koszegi, believe people should not hesitate to buy or sell property in the current market. “The market is steady, people should not be afraid to make a move now, Victoria explains. “With good rental properties difficult to find and rents at a premium, people should now be looking to buy. Anne-Marie is a salesperson with an AREINZ qualification, while Victoria is an associate salesperson. The pair enjoy working at the dynamic Howick office of Barfoot and Thompson. Working together for just over two years, they consistently rate among Barfoot and Thompson’s top performers. Anne-Marie has 10 years experience in the industry, and in the branch where she

was previously based ranked as the branch’s top salesperson for seven consecutive years. For three of those years, she was also in the company’s top 25 nationwide. The women are a great combination, successfully closing deals for both purchasers and vendors. Both women work by the code of discretion, loyalty and honesty. They are pleasant and never pushy. “We work together well and so our clients get two perspectives on things, which they find invaluable. I have the benefit of a decade of experience, while Victoria has all

the new technology skills and real creativity, Anne-Marie says They both produce videos for each property they list – a topnotch marketing tool which really reaps results. Check out their profile at www.barfoot.co.nz/a.koszegi A very happy client, Dina of East Auckland, said: “Anne-Marie and Victoria Koszegi are by far the best people we’ve ever dealt with. Put your foot in Aleesha’s door Ask Irene how to eat and lose weight healthily Our feet can give us grief but, luckily, there’s quick relief in the hands of podiatrist, Aleesha Nana, in Half Moon Bay Marina. The highly sought-after owner of Footflex Podiatry has treated patients from far-flung corners of Auckland for all kinds of issues from sports injuries, ankle and heel pain, biomechanics and orthotic therapy to nail and skinrelated conditions such as corns, calluses, verrucas and in-grown toenails. No problem is too big for this highly skilled specialist who handles everything from complicated surgical procedures to simple tasks such as cutting toenails. As a result, this Farm Cove local is well-known in medical circles, especially with doctors at the Marina who encouraged her to pursue her dream of establishing her own practice at this scenic location. While living five minutes away from work is a huge boon for the former Pakuranga College girl, she says it’s her clients who really make it worthwhile. “Helping people walk out pain-free and cur-

ing recurrent conditions gives me huge satisfaction. Clients can also rely on Footflex as their first point of call without going through the hassle of referrals.” Naturally, helping people get back on their feet as soon as possible is a priority. “When people have sore feet they can’t walk and this affects their performance in daily activities. Although we all vowed and declared we wouldn’t do it again this year, many of us have gained weight over the holiday period. Rather than carrying excess kilos, it is a good time to consult NutriActionz Natural Health Clinic’s naturopath, Irene Lok, for a plan to discard that weight healthily. Irene Lok is an experienced naturopath, acupuncturist and medical herbalist, who uses herbal and nutritional medicine, including acupuncture and specialised tests to assist clients who need to lose weight. She sees patients who report adverse health issues such as fatigue, sluggish metabolism and neurological problems like headaches or dizziness from rapid weight loss by some “fad diets”. And Irene has some wonderful anecdotes to tell about the success she has had with weight loss clients – like the man in his 60s who lost 39 kilos in nine months and reversed his diabetes and hypertension. “It is fat loss I help my clients achieve, not loss of precious lean muscles or just water,” she

Colour Your Home with Bronwyn Elsie Houghton is back in town Bronwyn Ade is absolutely passionate about colour and this is reflected in her success as a colour consultant. A former primary school teacher, Bronwyn runs her business, Colour Your Home, from Howick. She launched it in 2003 after an interior design course with well-known design tutor, Nanette Cameron and further studies with talented colour specialist, Peta Tearle. It’s not just colour options for your home Bronwyn will advise on, but she will also guide you in your interior design dilemmas. “I have always been a creative person and helped friends and family with colour and design ideas. The courses gave me the impetus to launch this new career,” Bronwyn explains. Most of Bronwyn’s work involves redecorating local homes. “Often people will say, I don’t want to change the curtains or upholstery, but need a new colour for the walls. Or they will want a complete change to the exterior of their home.”

Bronwyn has also worked on commercial projects (as varied as a kindergarten, church auditorium, school and library) and for several years worked with a leading Auckland tile company as their colour specialist. Bronwyn provides FREE a one-hour on-site consultation. She then goes on to charge an hourly rate and also offers a huge advantage with trade discounts on paint and textile materials. Bronwyn enjoys helping people and seeing them make good choices. She has many happy clients who have been delighted with her instinctive flair, resulting in some beautiful colour schemes “We were in a quandary on colours and Bronwyn provided a very good report that enabled us to clarify our options and make decisions.” – Brian and Brenda “Bronwyn is great at fully discerning what is needed to fix a colour problem and take the overall look to a higher level.” – Dean

Gina Henry – woman of substance They say behind every successful business there is a woman. Well, for Grangers Taphouse & Kitchen in Half Moon Bay Marina, that woman is Gina Henry. An astute businesswoman and mother of two active boys under five, Gina juggles more acts than many would believe and does them all well. If anyone thinks this busy Farm Cove resident doesn’t have time to cook at home, think again. She’s capable of whipping up restaurant-quality dishes for her family, and doting husband Clinton Henry says she is an “amazing cook” who also serves up inspiration for the ever-evolving Grangers menu. Accustomed to the bright lights of London where she worked in hospitality for years, Gina is often the author of ingenious new concepts, the icing on the cake for this popular eatery. To top it off, the Tauranga-born entrepreneur oversees ever single detail of the restaurant,

including the accounts, media and marketing, which have propelled the establishment through an astronomic rise over a period of less than year. The self-confessed perfectionist says it’s tough but completely worth it. “I’m so happy with how Grangers has turned out. It’s good to be a part of this fast-growing industry and the locals have been truly amazing and unwavering in their support.” While Grangers is enough to tie up anyone’s hands, Gina also has her finger in the successful pie of a cafe in Parnell, which she runs with equal passion and determination. Coming from a family of empowered women – her mother founded her own publishing company when Gina was a baby, and her grand-mother was one of the first female school principals in New Zealand – it’s easy to see the source of Gina’s inspiration and ambition.

Then, I would slowly slip in things that they didn’t like that much. “It was a lot of hard work when we first started home-schooling but now, with the internet and YouTube, it is amazing how quickly you can learn so many different things like alternative maths or finger maths. Though the former teacher prefers to have a more formal style of learning, she believes that learning doesn’t just come from books. “I think home-schooling should be called car schooling, she

VEN on Christmas Day, Dean Miller couldn’t resist solving online papers in maths, scoring thousands of points in Mathletics, week after week and year after year. He finds it challenging and stimulating. “It’s fun! he says. Little wonder that Dean won gold for the highest score in year 9 mathematics at the 2014 International Competition and Assessment for Schools. The 14-year-old, who enjoys cubing and squaring, recently attended a grand prizegiving ceremony at the Owen G. Glenn Building, University of Auckland Business School. His mother Sandy Miller is ecstatic. “I am so thrilled that Dean got rewarded for his dedication and all the hard work he’s put in through the years, she says. “There’s a lot of preparation that goes into it. The mother-of-three has every reason to be proud of her son’s achievement. Dean has been home-schooled since he spent his first year in a traditional school and didn’t achieve. “They didn’t see his strengths, says the former teacher, who has been home-schooling her three children — Brad, Kerry and Dean, from ages six to 14. “Dean has Type 1 Diabetes and he needs to have his insulin regularly, she says. “Apart from the friendly atmosphere, home-schooling allows him to study when he feels more energetic, which is mainly at night. “Sometimes we start working at 10pm, says the dedicated mother, who did a lot of role playing and research before they enrolled for the Accelerated Christian Education, last year. OUTH-East Auckland’s many lovers of ďŹ ne food, wine, and music are in for a treat this Valentine’s Day. The Clevedon Jazz, Wine and Food Festival runs from 11am-7pm this Saturday, February 14. It’s staged at the Auckland Polo Club’s Fisher Field in Clevedon-Kawakawa Road. Festival director Anthony Hunt says the live musical acts performing throughout the day include Nathan Haines, Rodger Fox, Erna Ferry with Spiral, the Hipstamatics and the Auckland Jazz Orchestra. Children who go along with their parents will be kept entertained by the free bouncy castles and face-painting. “We are really excited about the day,â€? says Mr Hunt. “We have a fantastic line-up of musicians, with a variety of styles to suit everyone, all performing on a large stage. “Several of our local boutique wineries will also be present, including John Hill Estate, Vin Alto, Puriri Hills, along with a tempting array of food to savour.â€? Haines is known as an internationallyrenowned jazz saxophonist, composer, producer, bandleader and vocalist. Fox is considered New Zealand’s foremost jazz trombonist, big band leader, jazz conductor, arranger and producer. Mr Hunt met Fox while studying jazz music at Massey University, where Fox was a senior lecturer. “This Valentine’s Day we invite people to grab a picnic blanket and treat those they love to artisan foods, boutique wines and international music makers,â€? says Mr Hunt. “The Clevedon Jazz, Wine and Food Festival’s ticket price includes three complimentary wine tastings and a souvenir wine glass.â€?

life. As Howick Historical Village looks towards its half-century, its leaders are thinking about ways the village can bring the region’s Fencible history into the future for younger generations. Ian Day, the village manager, says it is important for the museum to keep up with changes in technology in a way that is in keeping with its historic setting. In the 1970s the village founders envisaged a living museum with characters from the Fencible period of Auckland’s history. Now a PingX

app provides visitors with a virtual experience relevant to what they’re looking at during their visit. For example, if visitors stand by the village blacksmith, they can look to their mobile or tablet to learn about the ďŹ rst blacksmith in Howick and watch the old forge at work. “We may be a small museum on a global scale, but this is cutting edge technology,â€? Mr Day says. “Even though we’re not technology experts, with PingX we’ve been able to achieve something truly innovative, that even our older visitors are ďŹ nding easy to use.â€? Bluetooth Smart technology is used to determine a visitor’s prox-

imity to an exhibit. Small PX Beacons are hidden throughout the museum and emit a signal that controls the experience on the visitor’s mobile device. The museum manages its own content online. Angie Judge, co-founder of PingX says arts, culture and heritage venues throughout the world are looking for ways to remain relevant in an ever-changing world. History is being blended with high tech at the Howick village, she says. “We believe this technology will put New Zealand’s culture and tourist experience on the map and lead the way for venues globally.

THE Blues Super Rugby team is moving to a purpose-built, world-class training and administrative headquarters at Alexandra Park in Auckland later this year. The organisation has committed to a 15-year lease with Auckland Trotting Club to base their high performance centre at the Greenlane venue. Covering an approximate area of 1800 square metres, the facility will boast a high-tech gymnasium, prehab/rehab area, rooms for seminars, medical and physiotherapy treatment and sports science, a cafe, and offices for coaching, team management and administration. The training field is located inside the trotting track with an option for a second field if needed. “We aspire to be a world class organisation both on and off the playing field – and we need appropriate facilities for the team and all of our staff,” said Blues chairman Tony Carter. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to

reposition the entire Blues organisation towards achieving our long term goals.” Chief executive Michael Redman said the new facility would greatly enhance the team’s ability to prepare as well as retain and recruit players. “The new facility is not the total solution however it aligns with our other investments in culture, identity and sports science.” The Blues have trained at Unitec in Mt Albert for approximately 10 years, with its administrative offices moving from Eden Park last year after becoming a stand-alone organisation. The move will see rugby return to the venue for the first time in more than a century. Formerly known as Potter’s Paddock, Alexandra Park hosted the 14th All Blacks test in 1908 in which the home team comprehensively beat the British and Irish Lions 29-0 in front of 12,000 people. Construction of the new facility will start next month.

Zone champions TWO wins to Daniel Hunter helped the Harlequins swim team win the New Zealand zonal championships at Westwave Aquatic Centre on Sunday. The Harlequins is made up of swimmers from Auckland, Northland and Counties Manukau and featured six members of Howick Pakuranga Swim Club, including Hunter, who won the men’s 50-metre and 100m freestyle. Each of the four zone teams features 10 male and 10 female

swimmers under 16 and the same number in the 16-and-over competition. Hunter was joined by clubmates Mario Konisperger, Dominic Mildon and Ewan Jackson in the senior team, with Mikayla Dance and Thomas Hughson in the juniors. The Harlequins ďŹ nished well ahead in the points on 1978 followed by the South Island Makos (1750.5), Central North Aqua Knights (1678) and the Lower North All Stars (1646.5).

Malinga danger to Kiwis L

ASITH “The Slingerâ€? Malinga’s return from ankle surgery will boost Sri Lanka’s conďŹ dence going into their World Cup ODI opener against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday. Although rusty after a long recuperation, Malinga’s renowned ability to bowl toe-crunching yorkers could give his team a lethal attacking venom it lacked in the 2-4 series loss against the Black Caps. That will be the challenge for the New Zealand batsmen whose combined performance overcame the individual brilliance of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahala Jahawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan earlier in the summer. Regarded as third favourites behind Australia and South Africa by most “expertsâ€?, New Zealand has never produced a better balanced team, being strong in batting, bowling and ďŹ elding. With Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill making a timely return to form and Kane Williamson consistently outstanding, New Zealand’s cause would be boosted considerably if captain Brendon McCullum

Agnew’s Angle could repeat his test match brilliance by showing enough patience to get his eye in before unleashing his big shots. With Grant Elliott, Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi all having produced some sublime form, the Black Caps bat deep and are capable of scores in excess of 300. The competition between pacemen Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Trent Boult, Mitch McClenaghan and Adam Milne and spinners Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum is also ďŹ erce with all showing form in the lead up. Having consistently thrashed India, Australia deserves favouritism and their clash with New Zealand is eagerly anticipated. David Warner, Steve Smith, James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell are fast scoring batsmen and

Michael Clarke’s return from injury could boost the batting even further. With Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc performing magniďŹ cently, they have a fearsome bowling attack, as do South Africa with Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel. Add to that trio the world class AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and JP Duminy and their batting is also formidable enough to suggest they will make the semi-ďŹ nals despite their choker reputation. Although India, Sri Lanka and England are ranked above New Zealand, the Black Caps have far more impressive recent form. With that comes a renewed conďŹ dence, especially with home ground advantage in their pool games and the return to form of Taylor and Guptill. Meanwhile, with so many All Blacks missing from the early rounds of Super Rugby, picking winners in this weekend’s opening matches is a difďŹ cult exercise. However, the Hurricanes, Chiefs and Crusaders should make strong

challenges for the title when at full strength. Once again, the Crusaders should produce superior forward power led by superstars Richie McCaw, Kieran Reid and Sam Whitelock, while the Hurricanes and Chiefs have dazzling backs. In TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Julian Savea and Cory Jane, the Canes’ backline has six All Blacks. With the Chiefs signing Sonny Bill Williams, Hosea Gear and Seta Tamanivalu to join All Blacks Aaron Cruden and Augustine Pulu, they are also capable of providing plenty of excitement. Prediction: former Saint Kentigern College pupil Tamanivalu will make the same devastating impact Malakai Fekitoa did for the Highlanders last year when he rocketed into the All Blacks. Under Jerome Kaino’s leadership the Blues forwards should be stronger this year. However their success will depend on how well their backs convert some brilliant individualism into a cohesive mix which was missing last year.

PAKURANGA Jaguars Rugby League Club’s premier team has received a promotion of sorts to the second tier of the Auckland competition. Following a comprehensive review, the Auckland Rugby League (ARL) premiership structure will have a different look this year, with the Phelan Shield and SAS Sharman Cup competitions being combined As a result, the third-tier Phelan Shield competition will not exist in 2015, with ďŹ ve of the seven clubs from last year, including runners-up Pakuranga, joining the reformatted Sharman Cup. The Pukekohe Pythons and Navy/ North Shore Dolphins failed to meet the minimum team number criteria for this season. The Sharman Cup winners will be promoted to the ďŹ rst division for the ensuing season, while the bottom placed team from the Fox Memorial premiership will be relegated. There will be no relegation from the Sharman Cup, provided teams maintain the off-ďŹ eld criteria each year. The Phelan Shield will now be awarded to the Sharman Cup minor premiers from this year on. “The beneďŹ ts of this change is that the SAS Sharman Cup will be a stronger competition, with more clubs given the chance to grow and push for promotion to the Appliance Shed Fox Memorial,â€? says ARL competitions manager Patrick Carthy. “It’s also important that the Phelan Shield will remain an integral part of the game, as the prize for the minor premiers of the second division.â€? TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!

24 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 12, 2015 IVAN AGNEW: Lasith “The Slinger Malinga’s return from ankle surgery will boost Sri Lanka’s confidence going into their World Cup ODI opener against New Zealand in ➤ Page 23 Christchurch on Saturday.

Howick get on podium HOWICK Hornets Rugby League Club has made a solid debut in the code’s shorter format, placing third in the inaugural Counties Manukau Nines tournament. Playing at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura last Friday and Saturday, Howick lost to Otahuhu 14-16 in their opening game. They then finished day one with an 18-8 victory over Mangere East. The second day started with a 20-8 win over Manurewa Marlins, which qualified Howick for the top four. In the semi-finals, Howick and Papakura Sea Eagles were tied 18-18 at full-time forcing the match to golden point, with Papakura scoring a try to win 22-18. The 3 v 4 play-off saw Howick defeat Papatoetoe 20-10 to take a place on the podium, along with winners Papakura and runners-up Otahuhu. Counties Manukau Rugby League general manager Kasey King says the tournament will be an annual event around Waitangi Day. “It was something the clubs had wanted, says King. “The clubs can struggle to get players to pre-season training so the nines gives them an incentive. “It also provides an opportunity to trial younger players and try out combinations. King is pleased with the first hit-out, which featured eight of the 12 teams from the Counties Manukau zone entered. “We knew it would be a humble beginning, but it was excellent and wellreceived, he says. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start and there was some really good football being played.

Punt drag flicks NZ to win A

NITA Punt’s penalty corner prowess was to the fore in the women’s Black Sticks third hockey test against Canada in Whangarei on Sunday. Punt, who plays her club hockey for Howick Pakuranga, scored four goals in the 5-1 victory to complete a 3-0 series whitewash for the Kiwis. New Zealand won the opening match 4-1 last Thursday, after leading 2-1 at halftime. “We had some good patches of play and it’s good to score four goals, head coach Mark Hager said. “I thought we dominated most of the game but, in the end, we aren’t quite where we need to be. The Black Sticks only converted one of five penalty corners awarded throughout the game, with Brooke Neal scoring 40 seconds from fulltime. “Our set pieces aren’t quite as good as what we want so we have some work to do there, said Hager. “We have only trained four or five times since the summer break, so we will improve the more we play. The 4-0 triumph in Saturday’s second test was a classic case of a game of two halves as the Kiwis scored all four of their goals in the first two quarters. “It was a good first quarter, I thought we were very clinical and even in the second quarter I thought we dominated, said Hager. “Then in the second half, we lost structure and intensity, we weren’t running onto the ball with the same energy.

Despite Punt’s captain’s knock of four goals in the final fixture, she was dissatisfied her side was unable to put together a complete 60-minute performance against much lower ranked opposition. “We didn’t start that great, whereas [in the second test] we had a really good first half and then let ourselves down in the second, she said. “The performance for me on the field I thought was a bit disappointing. I didn’t do what I would like to have done, but it’s really

good to execute the penalty corners. That is something I’ve been working on and I take pride in the percentage we convert. Punt gave NZ the lead with her first penalty corner in the second minute which was all the scoring in the first half. Canada equalised in the 33rd minute, before rookie Rachel McCann restored the Black Sticks’ advantage. A consecutive hat-trick to Punt wrapped up the victory. “The combinations that we have

started to build, especially with the new girls that have come in, we can only get better from here, said Punt. “We haven’t actually had a lot of training so far this year, so it is exciting to see the potential the team has. The women’s Black Sticks will now prepare for the Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey which will see them take on Australia, Argentina, United States, China, Korea, Japan and an eighth team still to be named.
