Arts programme on the move By Chris Harrowell

S

TAFF at Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, are determined to keep serving the public while redevelopment work is carried out at the busy community asset. The Howick Local Board received an update on the planned multi-million dollar construction overhaul of the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road at its monthly meeting last Monday. Its members passed a motion approving funding in principle for an 18-month lease for Uxbridge staff to use the former Howick Police station building at 34 Moore Street. The unoccupied Moore Street property at which many of the art centre’s activities will be temporarily based is managed by Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL). The funding is subject to final approval by local board chairman David Collings of the lease details, which are commercially sensitive. The motion also approved the board’s spending of $20,000 toward a fit-out and associated costs to bring the Moore Street building up to the required standard. Redevelopment of the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road is a $6.4 million project identified as a key priority for the local board in its 2011 and 2014 plans. A report to the board received by its members at their recent public meeting states that the project is within budget. The two-stage construction programme is due to be completed by August, 2016. Other affected parties are the tenants of nearby Keall House, and the Uxbridge Early Learning Centre. The report details that the former is part of the redevelopment site, while the latter is adjacent to it. Council staff have engaged with Keall House’s previous tenants, who vacated the property in June last year. They’ve also been in contact with the Uxbridge Early Learning Centre to keep its staff informed of the redevelopment project to address concerns as to whether their site will be affected. Uxbridge director Vickie Bowers says she and her staff will continue to be based at the existing arts centre while the construction work is carried out.

SIGNING OFF: Howick Local Board chairman David Collings has final approval over a lease that will see activities normally run at the public arts centre in Uxbridge Times file photo Wayne Martin Road move to the disused former Howick Police station premises in Moore Street.

The centre’s classes and workshops will be moved to the Moore Street building. “We’re obviously really delighted about the redevelopment and are waiting for the final call as to when it might begin,” Ms Bowers told the Times. “It will be a challenge for us to keep our activities up and running during this time. “Some of them will continue here in Uxbridge Road and some of the classes and workshops will be run from Moore Street. “It’s fundamentally important that we keep things running throughout the redevelopment.”

Ms Bowers says the centre’s staff will keep people informed about how they can continue to access its many creative services. “We’re aiming for a full programme [to continue] at the moment. “We will stay in touch with people who have been involved with the centre and intend to keep them and others up to date with the progress.”

Farewell to man of love and laughs By Marianne Kelly

H

OWICK has lost one of its hard-working volunteers. Well-known citizen of 50 years, Bob Kentsley, died last week at the age of 88 after a life of service to the community. He and his wife Brenda were rewarded when they received Howick Citizens of the Year awards in 2000. Mr and Mrs Kentsley came to New Zealand from Britain in 1964. When Mr Kentsley returned to civvy street after World War II he found a job with the Public Trustees Office in London, England, where he got his first taste of New Zealand. A food parcel sent from the Public Trust in Auckland was the temptation to come to Aotearoa. After he qualified as an accountant in 1958, Mr Kentsley met the New Zealand works manager of an allied company to the one he was working for. When he asked whether there might be a cost accountant job in New Zealand, the answer was yes.

The position was with Avon Manufacturing, which ran a plant making clothing zips in Panmure. He and Mrs Kentsley were sent to Howick to live where they remained, in Howe Street for 10 years and then Cockle Bay for 30 years. When their children started school, Mr Kentsley found himself chairing the Owairoa Primary and then Howick Intermediate School PTAs (Parent Teachers’ Associations). He continued through the ranks working on the Edgewater College PTA and then its board of trustees. He started teaching Sunday School at Howick’s Anglican Church in 1970, at the time the largest Anglican Sunday School in the country. Other volunteer work included five years chairing the Howick Ratepayers’ Association. He also pursued 20 entertaining years working on advertising commercial film shoots, including one for the television series Epitaph, about the last man to be hanged in New Zealand.

Busway project coming forward By Marianne Kelly

P

UBLIC transport has taken over from cars in a decision to defer a flyover and bring forward construction of the South-East Busway to Botany. Auckland Transport (AT) will defer the $170 million Reeves Road flyover which would have linked Pakuranga Road with the Waipuna Bridge and the South-Eastern Highway. Instead it’s aiming to open the busway to Botany sooner than the proposed 2028 completion date. The flyover and busway are part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI). The change, Peter King, AT’s AMETI programme director says, will result in better transport choices for people in the area sooner and supports the roll-out of the new public transport network in 2016. A recent decision on the Basin Reserve flyover in Wellington showed the challenges of consenting a flyover affecting an urban area and the potential for long delays. Work to develop the Reeves Road flyover project showed its congestion benefits would be limited until further significant investment was made along the South-Eastern Highway. It also indicated a likely increase in costs with the need to create a quality urban environment beneath it. “This decision allows us to extend

ON TO BOTANY: Construction of a busway from the Pakuranga town centre to Botany has been brought forward.

the AMETI transport improvements made in Panmure to Pakuranga and Botany as soon as possible while continuing to build the case for the flyover,” Mr King says. The first stage of AMETI involved a transport interchange at Panmure, opened in January last year. The next stage includes the creation of busway lanes along Lagoon

Drive and Pakuranga Road to a new bus station at the Pakuranga town centre, including a busway lane added to the Panmure Bridge, and a shared walking and cycling path. The Panmure roundabout will also be replaced with an intersection and traffic lights and more direct pedestrian crossings. The Pakuranga to Botany phase

includes pedestrian and cycle improvements and extending the busway to Botany. Mr King says recent work on AMETI has identified that the busway can operate through the Pakuranga town centre without the need to build the Reeves Road flyover first. This allows funding to be used

to deliver more public transport improvements sooner by deferring the $170m flyover until next decade. Targeted traffic improvements will also be made to relieve congestion at the intersections of Ti Rakau Drive/ Pakuranga Road and Ti Rakau Drive/ Pakuranga Highway. While there are time savings created by opening the busway between Panmure and Pakuranga, they are greater when the full busway to Botany is open, he says. For example, catching the bus and train between Botany and Britomart will take 38 minutes, 17 minutes quicker. “Large numbers of passengers are expected to be attracted by quicker, frequent and more reliable bus journeys on lanes separate to traffic,” he says. “About 7.4 million trips a year are expected on the busway.” AT will update the community in early March on the new AMETI delivery plan and a potential change to the busway route through the Pakuranga town centre. Following further feasibility work, there will be consultation on any change to the busway route. Consultation will also be carried out on the latest design for the next construction stage between Panmure and Pakuranga before a Notice of Requirement is lodged in April. More information about AMETI is online at www.at.govt.nz/ameti.

aggravates the situation and leads to more abuse at home. “At Gandhi Nivas, there’s a caretaker who checks them in and explains the basic rules and regulations about no alcohol and drugs. There’s food, shower and a bed for them. “The public safety order is anything from 24 hours to five days, which is the length of time they can stay.” Mrs Varma says it gives the men a space to cool off and address their violent behaviour. “The following morning we do an assessment and find out the issues they’re struggling with. “We provide support and help them with mood management strategies and psychoeducation on what is socially and legally acceptable. After the police have sent us a report, we speak to the wife, children or in-laws and find out how we can help.” Sahaayta has had 670 family violence cases referred to it, of which 550 came from police. “Only 30 were paid for,” says Mrs Varma, of the largely free service the organisation provides to its clients. While it may leave Sahaayta struggling to pay its rent each month, it hasn’t dimmed its volunteers’ enthusiasm to help more South Asian families at Gandhi Nivas to lead safe lives, free of violence.

A high incidence of physical violence and abduction committed by Indian men is disproportionate when compared to their population statistics in the area. The statistics are disturbing with cases of family violence increasing among Indian and South Asian communities in South-East Auckland. “It’s an acculturation problem with the migrant population,” says Counties Manukau South Asian Police advisory board member, Ranjna Patel. Acculturation is a process in which members of one cultural group try to adapt to the beliefs of another group, which could often lead to an identity crisis. The idea of an early intervention safe house was proposed in an attempt to prevent future offending and abuse. Kiwi Indian men don’t approach their family or friends for support due to the shame factor involved. “They inevitably end up breaching the protection or public safety order given by the police following an incident to allow both sides of the dispute some breathing space,” says Mrs Patel, founder and director of the East Tamaki Healthcare Group of Companies.

inspector Nga-Wati Chaplow. “We thought outside the square and decided that let’s not be an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, but be right there to help,” says Mrs Patel. “Divorce in most instances is not an option for most migrant Indian women, so the victim is expected to take back the perpetrator in less than ideal circumstances. I was willing to fund it if a professional agency could run it,” she says. The programme focusing on South Asian and Indian families is funded by the primary care provider East Tamaki Healthcare and the Lotteries Commission. Sucharita Varma runs Sahaayta, which means ‘assistance’ in Hindi, a counselling and social support group for women, youth, men, children and seniors at Osterley Chambers in Manukau. She put her hand up to help support the new project. “We discovered there was a huge gap,” says Mrs Varma, who adds that they get referrals from police, doctors and self-referrals from across Auckland. “When a public safety order is served on South Asian Kiwi men by police, they are more likely to sleep the night in their car or a local park, have a shower at a pool and then go back home even angrier. TAFF at the Kids Choice After School Care centre in Pakuranga ask whoever stole their advertising sign to give it back. The centre is a key part of the Masada Community Trust, founded by Norma-Jean Van De Rheede. She noticed the advertising sign was missing just before 3pm last Monday. The sign, which is light blue and black, was allegedly stolen from its prominent position on the traffic roundabout at the intersection of Reeves and Udys Roads. Trust chairman Dave Upfold says the A1-sized sign comprised an aluminium board and metal case. “It’s worth about $500 and we have to go and buy another one now, he told the Times.

“It had an advertising poster that you slide into the frame and clip in. “Things like this are happening too often. People are stealing like it’s a sport. We are just a centre that provides a particular important service to children and families in our community. Mrs Van De Rheede says the advertising sign was in its usual spot at the busy Pakuranga roundabout throughout Waitangi Day weekend [February 6-8]. She’s phoned the Auckland Council to see if it had picked up the sign, but was told it hadn’t. She plans to report the sign’s disappearance to the police. “I drove past the sign at about 2pm last Monday and it was there, and then went past again at 2.45pm and it was gone, says Mrs Van De Rheede, a Justice of the Peace.

“It’s a temporary sign that you pick up and move. It’s very expensive and you don’t see many of them around as they are so valuable. Mr Upfold thinks the advertising sign may have been stolen by someone wanting to sell it for scrap metal. “It’s worth maybe $5 as scrap, but it’s worth $500 to us, he says. “The sign was originally donated to us by a company in East Tamaki. “We had only used it for the past six or so weeks. People with information on the whereabouts of Kids Choice After School Care centre’s advertising sign can phone Mr Upfold on 5277374, or Counties Manukau East Police on 261-1300. Alternatively, phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111.

Anger over car yard thefts By CHRIS HARROWELL

W

AYNE Smith is sick of having to reach into his pocket to repair the damage caused to his business by brazen thieves. The director of Right Price Motors in Highland Park is angry that his car sales yard has been targeted by thieves multiple times in recent weeks. A set of expensive 19-inch alloy wheels was taken from a Volkswagen Passat vehicle for sale at the Aviemore Drive yard overnight on Wednesday, January 28. The stolen wheels are worth about $4000 when new. A week later, on Wednesday, February 4, thieves stole another set of wheels from a Mazda Axela car also for sale at Mr Smith’s Highland Park yard. He replaced the stolen TSWbrand wheels, at a cost of about $2000, and also had to pay another $2500 to repair extensive damage caused to the Mazda vehicle by the offenders. A third set of wheels was recently stolen from a customer’s Subaru motor vehicle while parked at the back of Mr Smith’s automotive service centre in Andromeda Crescent, East Tamaki. Thieves unsuccessfully attempted to take the Oz-brand wheels off a Mercedes-Benz motor vehicle for sale on Mr Smith’s Highland Park car yard overnight last Tuesday, February 10. “The car fell while they were trying to take the wheels off, so they abandoned their attempt, he told the Times. “They managed to get two wheels off it, but must have been disturbed. “Whoever did it bought four cinder blocks with them to help them try to steal the car’s wheels.

Mr Smith is offering a cash reward for information leading to the apprehension of the offenders responsible for thefts at his car sales yard and automotive service centre. He recently staked out his Highland Park yard to see if he could catch the criminals in action. Mr Smith believes the wheels are being stolen to be on-sold for cash and has reported the thefts to police. “I’ve searched [auction web-

site] Trade Me to see if they are advertised on there, but didn’t see them, he says. “I believe it’s been the same people each time, as on one occasion they cut the power to our security cameras at the Highland Park sales yard. “Last Tuesday we padlocked the yard’s power box shut and they cut it open with bolt cutters. “This sort of thing has to be stopped now or it will become an epidemic.

Mr Smith has also had entire motor vehicles stolen from his other car yard in Jellicoe Road, Panmure. People with information on the theft of wheels from motor vehicles at Wayne Smith’s Right Price Motors car sales yard and automotive service centre in East Tamaki can phone Counties Manukau East Police on 261-1300. Alternatively, phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111.

What we are being asked to spend By Marianne Kelly

imisation Plan (WMMP) will include a region-wide organic collection, a “pay-as-you-throw waste collection and inorganic collection service changes.

A

uckland Council’s proposed capital spending for 2015-2025 (operational spend in brackets) is:

Transport $6.9billion ($13b – 58% rates, 42% other) – covers the basic transport network, about 25% less than the $9.3b previously planned Opting for the basic transport network funded by rates only will result in significantly reduced service levels, fewer public transport improvements (improved in 2016 but no further improvements over the following nine years), deferring some projects and maintenance and drastically reduced key projects. ■■Among the major infrastructure projects planned in the next 30 years are: CRL (City Rail Link) $2.5b in 2015-2025, including $200 million already spent; AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative), $553m in 2015-2025, $545m in 2025-2035; Mill Road, $144m in 20152025, $266m in 2025-2035, $410m in 2036-2045; East-West Connections $135m in 2015-2025 but may be delivered earlier under a governmentaccelerated package. ■■The budget for the CRL’s early enabling works is $280m in 2016-2017 to coincide with the planned redevelopment of the Downtown Shopping Centre by Precinct Properties, as well as $120m on continued land acquisitions. The main construction contract is budgeted for $1.9b. Water supply and wastewater $4.7b ($6.6b – 100% other) The spend is funded almost entirely by user charges proposed to rise by 2.5% in the first two years and 3.6% each following year. Service levels will remain the same. ■■High-priority projects include the central interceptor to reduce sewage overflows into central Auckland wa-

terways and the Waitemata Harbour; consent application for a further water take from the Waikato River. Auckland Development $1b ($2.2b – 60% rates, 40% other) New agency, Development Auckland, replaces Waterfront Auckland and Auckland Council Properties Ltd (ACPL) to work with the private sector on housing and town centre development. Parks, community and lifestyle $2.1b ($5.3b – 85% rates, 15% other) Feedback from local boards about the impact of an $800m reduction in capital spending resulted in the council deciding not to go ahead with the proposal. ■■Asset portfolios will be reviewed to ensure that the best value for money is being achieved. ■■Minor service reductions include lower-cost street gardens, spraying instead of mechanical edging,

reduced and standardised library hours. ■■New revenue streams and user fees will be introduced through standardised fees for cemeteries, more commercial structures in leisure centres and fees for some events in parks; a more community-led approach to community development; standardised social housing rentals; prioritising capital projects where they are most needed. Governance and support $1.1b ($6.1b – 48% rates, 52% other) Corporate costs will be reduced by $21m in year one and $30m from year two onwards. ■■Improved returns will be sought from Ports of Auckland and Auckland International Airport. Environmental management and regulation $1b ($4.3b – 51% rates, 49% other) There will be minor spending and education programme reductions. A

greater proportion of costs will be funded through user-pays fees. â– â– Storm water network investment will be maintained at existing levels. â– â– The Waste Management and Min-

Economic and cultural $0.4b ($2.2b – 69% rates, 31% other) Service and spending levels do not change much. ■■Investment includes renewing the aging Auckland Zoo infrastructure and investing in QEB (North Harbour), Western Springs and Mt Smart stadiums. ■■Submissions can be made online at www.shapeauckland.co.nz; on social media; or on the summary document posted to all super-city households. Howick ward Have Your Say meetings will be held at 6-8pm on March 3 at the Pakuranga United Rugby Club, Lloyd Elsmore Park; at 6-8pm on March 5 at Ormiston Senior College, Ormiston Road, Flat Bush. Register online at www.shapeauckland.co.nz. Consultation closes at 4pm on March 16. Final decisions will be made by June 2015 and be available at www.shapeauckland.co.nz in July.

Letters to the editor Be considerate

IN RESPONSE to the Opinion column, Howick and Pakuranga Times, January 29, I have never read such drivel. The laws of the road include keep left, keep to the speed limit and obey all traffic signs. For the idiots and morons that hog right-hand lanes, holding up traffic, being rude and inconsiderate, I say get off the road and walk, as you are a road hazard to others on the road who drive professionally and get to their destinations. Not sit and dream, pick their noses, talk and text on their mobile phones and don’t care about anyone behind them. Drive to your destination. Don’t sleep on the road. This is not the 1940s, driving around in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang vehicles. If 80 and 100 kilometres an hour is too fast for you, take a bus! It’s the 21st century. Keep up or get out. Dial *555 for inconsiderate drivers. It’s nothing to do with

being gracious. I’m 52 years of age and a “professional driver. Richard Dames, Somerville

Anarchy on the roads

I TOO have had experiences similar to the letter, ‘Inconsiderate Drivers’, (Howick and Pakuranga Times, January 19). It is a problem that has arisen since the Ministry of Transport surveillance of our roads was done away with. In those days, heaven help you if you were caught doing the sort of driving tactics this lady is talking about. This department was done away with to save money not lives. There seems to be now a complete inability to read the numbers on the road signs and interpret what they mean. They are not pictures, they are telling you something. But then maybe there should be a test at the examination for a driving licence for prospective drivers to interpret all numbers from five to 100, with pictures of a speedometer to illus-

trate them. Tailgating is another issue. No one seems to understand that if they are travelling at 100 kilometres per hour and put their foot on the brake, they will have travelled approximately 28 metres (in one second) before they begin to stop. That is an average of eight to nine sedan car lengths. I often turn into my drive at a higher than safe speed after indicating for some time that I am turning left, because the driver behind me is travelling at about two car lengths. There is a saying, “there is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action. Yes we have anarchy on the roads because many don’t want to obey road rules anymore. I R McIntyre, Howick Letters to the Editor can be sent to: The Editor, Times Newspapers, PO Box 259-243, Botany, Auckland 2163 or by email to editor@times.co.nz or fax (09) 271-8073. Letters should not exceed 200 words and should carry the name, residential address and contact telephone number of the author. Nom de plumes not accepted.

Using gas appliances in safe ways TIPS consumers need to know to use gas safely and efďŹ ciently, in the home and while caravanning, have been launched on a new website. The site has been produced by the LPG and Gas Associations, in conjunction with WorkSafe New Zealand; the Environmental Protection Agency; and the Plumbers, GasďŹ tters and Drainlayers Board. It includes advice about how to install, use and maintain gas appliances safely.

Contact a gas retailer or phone the gas emergency number listed in the ‘Emergency Services’ pages in the White Pages phone book.

Outdoor gas appliances, such as patio heaters and barbecues, should never be used inside.

Beware of carbon monoxide Camping appliances, like lanterns and cookers, must never be used in unventilated areas such as caravans and sealed tents.

LPG Association executive director Peter Gilbert says the industry takes very seriously the need to make sure consumers know how to use gas appliances correctly and safely. “As a result, there are few incidents involving gas, he says. “It’s our commitment to public awareness initiatives like this that helps us to maintain that good record.

Danger signs requiring the appliance to be turned off and a licensed gas worker contacted immediately are: Flame burning yellow instead of blue (except some ame-effect gas ďŹ replaces designed to burn with a yellow ame); soot deposits in or around the appliance; an unpleasant odour similar to car exhaust; feeling unwell with u-like symptoms when a gas appliance is being used.

Don’t use a phone in the area. Use one away from the gas leak to contact a gas retailer or licensed gas worker to immediately check the installation.

If an appliance is poorly ventilated or faulty it may produce highly poisonous carbon monoxide. Breathing low levels of the gas can cause headaches, nausea, ushed skin, dizziness, a false sense of wellbeing, tiredness and vomiting. Prolonged exposure or high levels can lead to collapse, unconsciousness or even death. Although odourless, carbon monoxide is usually accompanied by other emissions that may produce a car exhaust smell or watery eyes. If there is a suspicion of exposure, move into fresh air and seek immediate medical attention. A blood test is the only way to conďŹ rm carbon monoxide poisoning. If it can be done safely, turn off the appliance, ventilate the room and organise a licensed gas worker to check it. â– More information is online at www.gassafety.org.nz.

Award overwhelms Kendall B

ARBARA Kendall ranks being honoured with the Sport New Zealand Leadership Award as high as winning an Olympic medal. Kendall, originally from Bucklands Beach, was presented with the prestigious prize at the Halberg Awards ceremony last Wednesday. She was also inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame, alongside rugby league star Stacey Jones. “I had no idea about the leadership award, Kendall told the Times. “It was a big surprise. “When you get recognition like that, you think, ‘wow, that is cool’. “Awards like that are a time for reflection. I charge on and do what needs to be done, and don’t look back too much. Kendall became a household name in New Zealand when she won the gold medal in boardsailing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic

Games. She won silver four years later in Atlanta and at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 completed her full set of medals by winning bronze. In an athletic career that spanned 25 years, Kendall also won four gold, five silver and two bronze medals at boardsailing world championships. She has an MBE for services to windsurfing and has been inducted into the International Sailing Federation Hall of Fame, as well as being a four-time winner of the Halberg Sportswoman of the Year Award. “She’s been a pioneer for women in sport - from the sports field to the boardroom, says Sport New Zealand chief executive Peter Miskimmin, who presented the award. “Without question, her international success inspired this country. She became an important role model to many, but especially

young woman. Following her stellar career on the water, Kendall has held numerous high-level roles with the New Zealand and International Olympic Committees, among other leadership responsibilities. “[Kendall] has been one of New Zealand’s most successful and enduring sportswomen, underpinned by hard work, discipline and a sheer determination to succeed, says Miskimmin. “She has gone on to use those skills around the board table, championing the needs of the current and future generations of athletes here and around the world. “Most importantly, [she] has a natural warmth and a passion for life that has won the hearts of all of us. Kendall says her ambition to lead was a natural progression after retiring from competition. “I knew I wanted to give back and my personality is wired to

inspire people to raise the bar in their lives, she says. “I’ve always been like that. “When you have a passion for something, there are no obstacles. “A good leader has to lead by example. It’s not just about the talk, it’s about doing the walk. You have to be authentic or else people see the gaps. “You have to stay true to who you are and your values. The usually stoic Kendall was emotional after joining the likes of Sir Murray Halberg, Jock Hobbs and Richie McCaw as a recipient of the leadership award. “To be recognised as a leader amongst my peers and within sport in New Zealand is incredible, she says. “To me, that would mean as much as winning an Olympic medal. “I must say it overwhelmed me a little bit and I got a tear in my eye. “To have that acknowledgment is awesome.

Bucklands Beach holds slim advantage ONLY three points separate the leading clubs in the inaugural East Auckland Sailing Series. The four-leg regatta pits junior sailors from four clubs - Bucklands Beach Yacht Club (BBYC), Maraetai, Howick and Glendowie – against one another in friendly competition in Optimist and Starling fleets. After two legs, BBYC leads with 42 points, closely followed by Maraetai on 43 and Glendowie on 44. Howick Sailing Club is in fourth place on 69 points. The clubs are competing for the Ivan Raos Memorial Centreboard Trophy, while also gaining valuable race training to develop their young sailors. The third leg is being hosted by Glendowie on March 1 with the final event at Maraetai later next month.

Club rugby’s new format THE Auckland premier club rugby programme has been shaken up in 2015 with a vastly changed format in place. The 15 teams have been split into two pools, named blue and white, as per their finishing positions from the 2014 club competition. A seven-week round robin will commence on April 11 before the competition splits into a top and bottom tier, with the top four teams from each pool qualifying to vie for the Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield over seven rounds. The top four teams from the Alan McEvoy Shield will then play for the Gallaher Shield. The remaining 11 teams will be in line for the traditional silverware – Jubilee Trophy, Portola Trophy and Presidents Cup – depending on where they finish. “It’s quite timely for these changes to be made,â€? says Brian Wilsher, chairman of the council of delegates. “I’m sure it will add interest in the competition from earlier in the season; it will be exciting to see all teams battling out to see who will be in the top half of the draw for the second round.â€? The previous format, which had been in place for eight years, produced a number of one-sided results in matches between teams in the top and bottom halves of the competition. “This new format will reduce the number of blowout games,â€? says Wilsher. â€œNow, in the second round, teams in each of the two tiers will be of a similar standard, which will make for very competitive rugby.â€? The annual pre-season tournament for the Waka Nathan Challenge Cup will run over three weeks with the top eight from 2014 automatically qualifying for the quarter finals, while the bottom seven will play off for the Pollard Cup. All teams will play at Waitemata on March 14 to kick off the tournament with the respective finals being played on March 28th.

IX members of Howick Softball Club will represent a number of different regions at the national provincial softball championships in Hamilton this weekend. Howick premier women’s team catcher Zoe Tolhopf has been chosen in the Auckland team for the first time, after coming through the agegroup representative system. Players that aren’t selected as one of up to 15 protected players by their home province then go into a nation-

wide draft. The draft picks are allocated in reverse order of placings in last year’s national tournament. Howick outfielders Hannah Cook and Jaimee-Ann Dick have been acquired by Wellington and Counties Manukau respectively. Pitcher Marissa Berkes, who played for Wellington last year, has been picked up Southern Pride. Club teammate Breanna Gibson is also accustomed to donning other province’s jerseys. After being chosen by Southern Pride in 2014,

she has been drafted by defending champions Canterbury as a pitcher, though she is also adept at catcher and third base. Breanna’s brother, former Black Sox pitcher Campbell Gibson, who plays for Howick’s premier men’s team, will turn out for Counties Manukau for the second consecutive season. “It’s awesome that our talented players are being recognised, says Howick premier women’s coach and club development officer Travis Owen. “All the players that have been

picked up are definitely well deserving of that. It’s really cool to see. They are all talented and work really hard. Owen says the members of his premier women’s side will relish the chance to be on opposing teams at the national champs. “We are such a close team but I think they’ll really enjoy competing against each other. “I knew a number of the players are keen to face Marissa. Even though she’s good, they will see that as a challenge.
