Century of caring recalled By Marianne Kelly
O
NE-hundred-year-old Len Darr says he’s looking forward to the next 10 years. “I feel 10 years younger. I can still be of service, says the Howick man. He means what he says. He’s asked St John New Zealand to put him back into uniform because he believes he can be of service to people in hospices. His philosophy on life for many years has been to draw a clear delineation between the physical and the spiritual aspects of life. “People in hospices are facing death. But I can advise them that they have nothing to fear at this stage of their life. They are going home to their spirit within them, he says. “People in a hospice should be treated for their spirit when their physical body is on the way out. Mr Darr’s association with the St John ambulance service goes back to his teenage days in England. He was 14 when he took first aid certificate classes. “I was a young man in the days of the [1930s Great] Depression. It [St John] was my social life and I enjoyed it, attending places where there had been accidents, such as skating rinks, boxing matches, dirt track racing. While serving with the Royal Air Force medical corps in Egypt during World War II, Mr Darr met New Zealand servicemen who encouraged him to emigrate. He came to New Zealand in 1948 and worked as a store ledger clerk at the Devonport naval dock yard. He returned to England to study and qualify in chiropractic, spine manipulation and medical electricity, coming back to run Darr’s Health Clinic in Takapuna. He retired aged 70 and took up bowls. After he moved to Howick in 2001, he joined Bucklands Beach Bowling
INSIDE
Club and Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA). “It was part of my social life in retirement years in Howick. A highlight was becoming a member of the RSA’s KEV (Kings Empire Veterans) bowling team, travelling to many parts of the North Island to compete against fellow veterans. “But there are no young people, only elderly people playing bowls, he says. “The bowling clubs are losing numbers and they need young people to take it up. “Bowls is a young person’s game, but old people can also play it. Bowling greens, he says, are a place for “great comradeship and he believes that young people, in mixing only with young friends, are missing out. “With the older people they would be learning, he says. “They would be getting the benefit of other peoples’ experiences. “Everyone has a story but to them [young people] it’s only history. “Well it is. But they would be getting it first-hand instead of out of books. I love mixing with younger people and I try to help where it is needed. I willingly give it. “Over 100 years I have been here for a purpose, to be of service to communities which I still continue, despite my physical age. These days Mr Darr helps out with administration at Fowey Lodge Bible School in Bleakhouse Road, Howick, and says members of the Hanne family who run the business are also his family. “I have definitely enjoyed my life. I’ve had a good life. I had some near misses during the war. But I have felt protected all the way. “My mind is young and active and I don’t want to be entertained with a bunch of elderly people playing cards. I want to feel I can compete with the youngest and the best.

HO is this? I was born outside of New Zealand, and immigrated to these shores at a very young age. My parents were seeking a better standard of living for our family and chose to settle in Aotearoa. I quickly became immersed in the Kiwi sporting culture and received quality coaching and faced committed opposition which honed my skills. Through a combination of natural talent and hard work, I am considered one of our country’s ďŹ nest sporting stars and am equally revered by fans of my chosen sport around the globe. The fact is, this brief biography is true of one of New Zealand’s ďŹ rst sporting greats as well as our latest phenom. Dave Gallaher was born in Donegal, Ireland, in 1873, before his family shipped out to New Zealand in 1878. After making his provincial representative rugby debut in 1895, his sporting career was stalled when he enlisted for and fought in the Anglo-Boer War in 1901-02. When it resumed, he went on to become a legend in New Zealand rugby history.

Gallaher played in New Zealand’s ďŹ rst ever test match, contested against Australia at Sydney in 1903. He captained the ďŹ rst New Zealand national team to tour the British Isles – now known as the Original All Blacks. The tour was an overwhelming success with Gallaher leading the team to 34 wins from 35 matches. Like Gallaher, golďŹ ng sensation Lydia Ko was born elsewhere, but is a proud Kiwi. The teen prodigy is originally from South Korea and came to New Zealand when she was six years old. She had been swinging a golf club for only a few weeks before she arrived on our shores and took the sport up in earnest. Her burgeoning interest and talent was spotted by then apprentice instructor Guy Wilson at Pupuke Golf Club. The pair became a tight-knit team for 11 years until Ko turned professional at age 16. Before that, she had been the world’s top-ranked woman ama-

teur for 130 weeks. She is the youngest person to ever win a professional golf tour event at 14, and a year later was the youngest female to win an LPGA Tour title. Despite the plethora of athletes born offshore who have worn the silver fern between Gallaher and Ko’s feats, Ko’s eligibility to play for NZ and commitment to the country has frequently been questioned. Funnily, the same argument is never raised regarding Gallaher. Somewhat ďŹ ttingly, as one of the now 40 per cent of New Zealanders who weren’t born here, Ko put her adopted home-

land in the headlines once again in the week of our national celebration, Waitangi Day, when she became the youngest golfer, male or female, to reach the world number one ranking. For me, it is important that those who wear the silver fern are products of our sporting system and culture, as Gallaher was and Ko is, having played and being coached here through their formative years. The life histories of Gallaher and Ko, lived more than a century apart, show that representing New Zealand in sport has little to do with where you were born.

Ushering in Year of the Ram
NEWS BITES New bus fleet ordered
By FARIDA MASTER
DOUBLE-DECK buses will be seen on a major South-East Auckland route later this year. The owner of Howick & Eastern Buses, Souter Investments, says it will invest $12 million for 15 of the buses which will be used predominantly on routes between Botany and Downtown Auckland. The buses are shorter than a regular Howick & Eastern commuter bus, yet can carry nearly twice the number of passengers, says Sir Brian Souter, of Souter Investments. The result will be fewer buses on the roads and reduced carbon emissions per passenger. Sheryll Otway, general manager of Howick & Eastern says the double deck buses are an exciting first for the company and set a new standard for Auckland public bus transport. New features will include free Wi-Fi and power points and USB points at every seat. “To be able to charge a smart phone and stay connected while travelling is a fantastic development for our customers which we hope will make the journey more enjoyable,” she says.

HERE’S a flutter of excitement as neatly packed traditional costumes compete with head gear and footwear being handed over to a group of Chinese-Kiwi women. One by one, they put on their faces and slip into their colourful traditional skirts and red tops. Happily pirouetting in their colourful regalia, they preen and pose, and break into bursts of chatter. There is an air of festivity as members of the Pakuranga Chinese Association have gathered for the Times photo-shoot that heralds the onset of the Chinese New Year - the biggest traditional Chinese festival celebrated for 16 days. Barry Huang, the chief translator and go–getting president of the association, says the association has around 350 members from the Howick, Pakuranga, Botany, Dannemora and Ormiston areas. “We meet twice a week at the Pakuranga Leisure Club for activities that include Chinese painting, calligraphy, folk dancing, spoken English classes, tai chi, badminton, table tennis and choir singing,” he says. Apart from the grand celebration at the ASB Showgrounds, the association will host a cultural programme on February 22, the fourth day of the New Year. Last New Year the Chinese association invited officers from the Counties Manukau Police to join in the New Year festivities. A competitive game of tabletennis saw the police sportingly lose to the Chinese team. “We beat them by 9-1,” laughs Mr Huang. This year, Counties Manukau Police crime prevention officer Garry Boles and district commander Superintendent John Tims along with other officers, will join in the New Year festivities. “We are going to have a cultural exchange with more than 20 police officers. There will be a police choir singing as well,” he smiles. The Chinese New Year celebra-

Everyone brings a plate and the best dish will be judged on the basis of simplicity, presentation and taste. “It will be a great way to usher in the New Year,” says Mr Huang. ■ Rotary Club of Auckland South will celebrate “the warmth of Chinese New Year 2015” with Chinese gourmet food and entertainment. The event is at Te Tuhi, Pakuranga, on February 26, 6.30-8pm. Tickets cost $28 per adult and free for children under 12 years. Contact Eric Yi at eric@acetech.co.nz.
New chief financial officer SUZANNE Tindal is the Auckland Council’s new chief financial officer. Her appointment was announced by the council’s chief executive officer Stephen Town on January 28. Ms Tindal returned to New Zealand last year after working overseas for the past 12 months. She’s currently director of consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Central Auckland. Mr Town says Ms Tindal has a wealth of international experience in the financial services, energy and information technology sectors. She replaces Andrew McKenzie, who resigned in July.
CHINESE NEW YEAR ■ Today is the first day of the year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram. New Year is a time to honour deities, ancestors and invite the God of good fortune to their homes. ■ Traditionally, the Chinese don’t clean their house for the first two days of the New Year since they don’t want to sweep the good luck away. ■ The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE: The members of the Scottish tribal music band Clan Celtica are among those taking part in this Sunday’s Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo. Times file photos
Reviving Scottish sounds By Chris Harrowell
Clan Celtica is a six-piece group based in Beachlands that was formed in December, 2013. One of its key members is talented Scottish percussionist Frankie Mac. “We love and embrace Scottish military pipe bands and the music they play, Mac told the Times. “We describe ourselves as a Scottish tribal band and we’re a bit theatrical. “As well as producing an intense, eerie atmosphere, our music is an exciting mix of the haunting sound you can get from bagpipes and the pulsating drumbeat behind it. Mac is a former student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. As well as leading Clan Celtica’s percussion line, he’s also the group’s main composer, recording

HIS year’s Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo will feature the public performance of haunting sounds from a faraway land created by master musicians. Scottish tribal music band Clan Celtica stages performances at 12.20pm and 1.35pm this Sunday as part of the popular annual public event. The community celebration gets under way at 10am in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, and is sponsored by a number of organisations and businesses including Times Newspapers. The event is organised by Howick councillor Sharon Stewart with assistance from the Lions Club of Howick.
producer and manager. Mac has publicly displayed his musical talents alongside groups including the Glasgow Philharmonia and BBC Orchestras. Clan Celtica is the only band of its genre playing such music in the Southern Hemisphere. It plays both original tunes and rearrangements of well-known Scottish compositions from film soundtracks including Braveheart and Rob Roy. “The Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo last year was our first public gig, says Mac. “Playing music has always been close to my heart, but I gave it up for about 15 years. “About three years ago I began playing again and joined bagpipe bands to get my hands back up to speed.
Mac says Clan Celtica is on the lookout for experienced bagpipers to join the group. He invites anyone keen to get involved to speak to him before or after its two performances this Sunday. The community event also features Scottish Highland Games and strongman contests, military re-enactments, and music performances from the Eno Sisters and The Smokin’ Bandits. There will also be Scottish dancers, Celts and Norsemen, pipe and brass bands, craft and food stalls, a Mini car display, cheerleaders and more. The Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo gets under way at 10am this Sunday, February 22, at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Entry is free.
A LACK of safe, affordable housing is having an impact on the health and well-being of children and their parents, according to the Salvation Army. In its 2015 State of the Nation report A Mountain All Can Climb, the organisation says housing and affordability in Auckland and Christchurch is not being tackled with enough speed and concentration. Aucklanders, it says, are faced with an affordable housing crisis, with the average Auckland house price at $655,000, rents rising over the past two years and a housing supply shortage of 13,000 houses. Better efforts are needed for tackling serious crime, educational achievement and child poverty, which all get a C- or below in the report. More houses are needed immediately, says Major Sue Hay, director of the Salvation Army Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit. They must be affordable at all levels of income. “Consistency in the levels of violent crime, particularly domestic violence, and the decreased ability of the police to resolve violent crime is alarming, the report author Alan Johnson says. The report is also critical of the Ministry of Education’s failure to report on Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) enrolments. “The Ministry of Education receives $1.5 billion of taxpayer funding to operate ECEC centres, Mr Johnson says. “Their inability to account for the social outcomes they are achieving in a timely manner is regrettable. However, the report also says there have been improvements in falling teenage pregnancy rates, prisoner recidivism, living costs and food poverty, which all achieve scores of B+ or better. This is the eighth year the annual report has been produced.

Have your say on the future of Auckland

OSHUA Bruce from Maclean’s College was among 15 students in the Auckland region to compete in the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett, VC Speech Competition. The ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition is a partnership between the RSA and ANZ to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by those who’ve served New Zealand in armed conflicts overseas. The competition is for years 12 and 13. Joshua, whose interest in public speaking has been fostered from a young age, was the top regional winner of the competition. However, due to it being the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, all eight regional finalists will travel to Gallipoli in April after competing in the Nationals in March. The life-changing experience will give them a chance to stand on the sacred soil and pay tribute to the men who travelled from the ends of the earth in order to defend their homeland. Joshua has had other wins as well. In years 5 and 6 at Anchorage Park School he won the Manuel Cup two years in a row and went on to represent his school at Eastern zone competitions. He says he is honoured to represent Macleans College at this prestigious competition. While Joshua is looking forward to travelling abroad for the first time and gaining an insight into what the Anzacs experienced, his father Don Bruce says:
Auckland is the country’s fastest growing region. So we’re facing big opportunities and equally big challenges. We need to balance investment in our city, communities and transport with keeping rates affordable. To get this mix right, we need you to have your say on Auckland’s 10-year budget. You can provide feedback on regional and local issues in person at a ‘Have your say’ event in your local area. These events will be attended by councillors and local board members, and replace traditional hearings. Come along on the day to have your say. To view a list of venues and times, visit shapeauckland.co.nz

VISITORS to Auckland Zoo have the chance to win a new Mazda2 motor vehicle by guessing how many meerkat soft toys it contains. The car will be parked at the zoo’s main entrance, in Motions Road, Western Springs, for people to view until March 15. They can enter the competition by texting their best guess of how many soft toys are inside the vehicle to the number 5020. All correct entries go into the prize draw to win the Mazda2, valued at more than $20,000.
Auckland is facing big opportunities and equally big challenges, and the Howick Local Board wants you to have your say on Auckland’s 2015-2025 10-year budget. We need to hear your views on regional and local priorities. Visit shapeauckland.co.nz to have your say or provide feedback in person at one of the events in Howick. Information sessions Look out for us at ‘pop-up’ events around Howick where you can chat to board members about local proposals and issues in the 10-year budget that are of importance to Howick, including initiatives featured in the Howick Local Board Plan 2014. You can find out more at facebook.com/HowickLB
“It is ironic that like many parents 100 years ago, we are proud to be sending our 17-year-old son to Gallipoli. Unlike those parents, our chances of seeing Joshua again soon are somewhat better.”
Meerkats are found in countries in southern Africa, including South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Adults stand on average about 30 centimetres tall and weigh 600-900 grams. They’re blind at birth, but as they age the black around their eyes works like sunglasses, protecting their vision from the sun. The small African mammals communicate by scent, sound and body language, and have more than 20 different verbal calls.
™
Have your say event You can also provide your feedback in person to governing body and local board members at a number of ‘Have your say’ events. These events replace traditional hearings. They will cover key regional topics – including investment in Auckland, fixing transport and keeping rates affordable – as well as local proposals. Your local ‘Have your say’ event is being held at: • Pakuranga Rugby Club, Tuesday 3 March (6-8pm) • Ormiston Senior College, Thursday 5 March (6-8pm)
Have your say by Monday 16 March 2015 For more information, details on the ‘Have your say’ events and to provide feedback, visit shapeauckland.co.nz or call 09 301 0101 facebook.com/HowickLB 127208-v2

Pearless lends her creativity to the project wall inside Te Tuhi public art gallery in Pakuranga’s Reeves Road. She will create on it a “bold composition of shape and colour based on the geometry of nautical semaphore patterns. “Reproduced at large scale in an unconventional palate, Pearless transforms this abstract language into a spatial device that refracts within the surrounding architecture, creating a presence that corrals the attention of those passing by. Viewing the project wall art is free.
Play auditions Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga March 8, from 10.30am-1pm ACTORS and actresses are invited to audition for roles in Howick Little Theatre’s public stage production of the comedic drama Sitting Pretty. Written by Amy Rosenthal and directed by theatre veteran Penelope Keegan, the play is set in London, England, and centres on the lives of fictitious sisters Nina and Nancy. Needed are five women to play characters ranging in age from their late 30s to 60s, and four men to play people aged from their late teens to late 50s.
Positive race relations call THIS year’s Race Relations Day theme – ‘Big Change Starts Small’ - was created by a Vietnamese Kiwi who lived in Auckland for less than a year when he won last year’s national Race Unity Speech Award. “Thai An Vo’s winning speech captures the spirit of positive race relations and human rights: Big change starts small. Positive race relations don’t just live in a document at the United Nations - they must live in our communities, suburbs and lives, says Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy. The theme’s te reo Maori theme is the proverb ‘Itiiti Rearea, Kahika Teitei, Ka Taea’ - the smallest bellbird is able to climb to the heights of the tallest Kahika tree. “Young Maori and Pacific Kiwis are a growing demographic, with Auckland home to the biggest Polynesian
population on the planet. Today one in 10 Kiwis are Asian Kiwis, in Auckland one in four of us are Asian, says Dame Susan. “New Zealand is one of the most ethnically diverse nations on earth and yet we are also one of the most peaceful nations on the planet. This is something I’m grateful for and proud of but it’s also something we can’t take for granted. “While we’ve come a long way when it comes to treating each other with respect, it’s still a work in progress. The Human Rights Commission receives thousands of complaints every year and a third of them are related to racial discrimination, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do. This year’s Race Relations Day is on March 21, when communities across the country will host events from food fairs to cultural festivals to celebrate.

Aiming to prevent crimes By Chris Harrowell
J
ANE Field brings experience as a proven crime-solver to her new role as the sergeant in charge of Howick Police. Mrs Field starts in the full-time position, based at the station in Fencible Drive, next Monday. She replaces sergeant Paul Devane who’s moving to a position at Counties Manukau Police headquarters. Mrs Field’s most recent position was as station sergeant at Counties Manukau East Police HQ in Ormiston Road, Flat Bush. She says she’s “very excited” to get started in her new job. “I’m really looking forward to getting out and about and working with the community and police officers in Howick,” she told the Times. “They have a very good police team here and I love this area. “I’ll be working with the station’s community police constables and our partner agencies, including Neighbourhood Support and the Crime Watch Community Patrols.” Mrs Field has worked within the police in Flat Bush and at the former Howick Police station building in Moore Street for 12 years. One of her key former roles was as a sergeant with Counties Manukau East Police’s tactical crime reduction unit, focusing on solving and preventing residential and commercial burglaries. “I also worked for a couple of years with the community patrolling team at the former Howick Police station and as a youth education officer,” she says. “I’ve been in the police for 13 years and most of that time I’ve worked in this area. rience working with a wide range of people to solve problems and on crime prevention initiatives.” Mrs Field encourages members of the public to take action if they see something in their local area that looks or feels out of place. “The police rely on the community to be our eyes and ears,” she says. “I encourage everyone to take some ownership of their neighbourhood and local area. If anyone sees something suspicious hap-
pening, they should phone police on 111. Their information may be the piece of the puzzle we or other officers need to solve a crime.” The officer Mrs Field replaces as the sergeant in charge of Howick Police station says he’s grateful for the assistance he and his team have received from the public. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two-and-a-half years at the Howick station,” says Mr Devane. “I want to say a huge thank you to the people of this community
for helping and supporting us and the work we do. “They have always been willing to take on the various crime prevention messages we strive to get out there.” To contact sergeant Jane Field or the Howick Police station’s community constables, phone Counties Manukau Police on 2611300. Superintendent Sandra Manderson, national commander of the police’s Cricket World Cup operation, says: “The ICC Cricket World Cup is a wonderful opportunity to showcase New Zealand to the world. “New Zealand police have been working very closely with a number of partner agencies including our colleagues in Australia to create a safe and secure environment throughout the tournament,” she says. “But we need the New Zealand public to play their part by providing a warm and friendly welcome to our international guests. “A great example is the way we drive around New Zealand. “There will be thousands of extra international visitors navigating our unique roads.” Ms Manderson says police will have an increased presence on the roads, but there are also things the public can do to help. “Leave early, be patient and show courtesy to our international visitors so everyone can get safely from A to B to enjoy the cricket.” Police will also be working with security staff at the various cricket match venues during games. “Under the Major Events Management Act 2007 there are increased penalties for the offence of invading the pitch at a major sporting event. Anyone convicted of invading the pitch at the Cricket World Cup is liable to imprisonment for a term up to three months or a $5000 fine. Auckland hosts its first game of the major international tournament at Eden Park between New Zealand and Australia on February 28.

Flyover plan delay under criticism P
LANS to delay construction of the Reeves Road flyover in Pakuranga for a decade have been greeted with disappointment by Howick Local Board chairman, David Collings. Last week Auckland Transport (AT) announced that it would defer the $170 million Reeves Road flyover which would have linked Pakuranga Road with the Waipuna Bridge and the South-Eastern Highway. Instead it’s aiming to open the busway to Botany sooner than the proposed 2028 completion date. The flyover and busway are part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI), (see Howick and Pakuranga Times,
February 16). Mr Collings says the Howick ward accommodates 10 per cent of Auckland’s population and it’s growing. “It’s crucial South-East Auckland residents have alternative transport options to reduce our isolation from the rest of the Auckland region,” he says. The flyover, he says, was pivotal to the AMETI project. It was also an attempt to alleviate congestion, free up the Pakuranga town centre, and allow quality public transport options. “I’m not convinced the latest options will deliver the same levels of best public transport or provide a sustainable solution to congestion,”
he says. “We have been reminded just how fragile our local road network is, with recent work being carried out along Gossamer Drive. The works produced a substantial increase in traffic on Pakuranga Road which at normal times carries the equivalent of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.” Huge investments are also planned for Pakuranga Plaza by its new owners with a possible mall expansion, a hotel and an apartment building. “I feel that now is the right time to combine and coordinate this growth with transport options, so it’s done in the best possible way,” he says. The current local board and the previous Manukau City Council and Pakuranga Community Board con-
tinuously supported options for the total AMETI project, he says. “At the same time our community has endured an enormous impact with hundreds of residents personally affected. We haven’t endured the huge effect on the community, to now be shortchanged.” Mr Collings says the Government, having provided further funding to accelerate the entire project, will want to see its investment spent with the best return for local taxpayers. However, while the delay is “surprising and a big step back”, he says the local board will continue to work with AT to ensure better transport choices for residents to achieve the best outcome.

INTERNATIONAL SENSATION: Kantuta, the international Latino band, got people energetically dancing to their tunes. Photos supplied/
By Farida Master The park next to the beach on Shelly Beach Parade, Cockle Bay, was a colourful patchwork of rugs, picnic baskets and beach chairs as the international Latin sensation Kantuta entertained with gusto and flair. The Auckland Council Latin Fiesta at Cockle Bay on February 14 set the mood
for a fun afternoon with sun, sand and song. There was a distinct Latin American flavour as New Zealand’s top Latin dance band hit the right notes to get everyone up and dancing. The Latino music, including salsa meringue, modern Latin dance tunes and classic Latin favourites, had the beach revellers following the sensual hip movement and footwork of Latino dancers,
Sanaya Master
leading the way. The charismatic lead vocalist Ben Figueroa, involved a lot of audience participation, while guitarist Hernan Zarate, along with the rest of the band, created an atmosphere of South America at Cockle Bay. The mixed cultural background of the international band surely worked its magic, making it a special Valentine’s Day event.

NE very bright student at the International Travel College (ITC) has scored the highest mark in New Zealand for the IATA Foundation Exam. Anastasiya Kolchunova is an international student from Russia who has been at ITC since February 2013. She’s completed levels three and four and is now studying towards a level five diploma in tourism and travel management. To achieve top marks in the country is a great achievement for Anastasiya. The IATA Foundation Exam is an internationally recognised qualification covering important tourism topics, including customer service, reservations, sales, travel agent training, electronic booking tools and pre-packaged
tour products. “I feel excited and happy to be named the top scholar in New Zealand, says Anastasiya. “The IATA Foundation Diploma gave me a lot of knowledge about the travel and tourism industry, which is very valuable. She chose to study in New Zealand because of its great reputation as a popular destination for tourists and international students. When she finishes her studies, Anastasiya wants to pursue a career in the hotel industry. “My dream job is to get into the amazing world of hotel work, meet new people every day and share my knowledge with them, she says. “New Zealand is one of the best places to make my dreams come true. International work experience in a country with a highly
developed tourism industry sounds awesome to me. ITC, with a campus at Botany, has been teaching the IATA Foundation Diploma for several years and has enjoyed great success with the course. In 2011, it was named as one of the top 10 IATA training centres in the Asia Pacific region. A total of 13 ITC students passed the recent exam and four gained distinction. ITC tutor Steve Burke said: “We’re very proud of our students who achieve this award. ■■Louise Taylor of Pakuranga College is one of six students awarded scholarships to study at the ITC this year. ITC allocates several scholarship each year. Information about 2016 scholarships will be released between May and July.

Looking back, 20 years ago... From the files of the Howick and Pakuranga Times, in 1995 YACHTIES GEAR UP FOR FUN February 13: YACHTIES are gearing up for the annual Pine Harbour Fiji Island Classic later this month. Now in its fourth year, the event sees the island of Motuihe transformed into a tropical paradise and renamed “Fijipinharmar for the day. Last year the classic attracted a fleet of 50 yachts and launches. It is sponsored by the Fiji Visitors Bureau and Pine Harbour Marina in conjunction with the Pine Harbour Cruising Club. The February 25 event is open to all craft resident at Pine Harbour Marina with the course based on the infamous ENTEC Rally which is designed with an emphasis on fun and family participation. On race day “Fijipinharmar is transformed into a colourful scene giving true Pacific Island flavour. With the added participation and support of the local Fiji community, the reception includes an immigration facility to clear passports together with marquees, island music and Fiji warriors and a feast of traditional island food and Fiji refreshments. Spot prizes include a trip for two to Fiji including airfares and accommodation at the Naitasi resort. Winners of the race are presented with the Pine Harbour Marina replica America’s Cup and the ENTEC Shield.
H-H-Holy H-H-Hell!
February 16: AN anonymous Howick couple have sold their investment plate for a New Zealand record-breaking sum of $309,375 – making over $200,000 on the deal. The sought after “H plate was purchased by the local couple 22 months ago for $101,250. It has been bought by an Auckland business-man and collector who owns nine other plates. He has also asked to have his identity kept secret.
The Howick couple say they had originally planned to keep the plate for some time. “We believed we could double our money if we waited three or four years, so we are more than happy with the gain we’ve made.
SCOUT LEADER HONOURED
February 20: HOWICK’S Winston Miskelly’s long service to the Scout Association of New Zealand was recognised recently with the award of the prestigious Bar to the Silver Tiki. The 58 year old engineer has been involved with scouting for 30 years and this is his fifth award. His first came 23 years ago when he was presented with the Chief Scouts Commendation and since then he has been awarded the Medal of Merit, Bar to the Medal of Merit, the Silver Tiki and now Bar to the Silver Tiki. He joined the scouts in Christchurch before moving to Howick 26 years ago. “A big highlight for me was attending the 1991 World Jamboree in Korea, he says. “The most emotional part was right at the start of the jamboree when all the different countries came in, including some from behind the Iron Curtain. “Just to be part of something that was international made me feel great, says Mr Miskelly. But the main highlight for Mr Miskelly was the involvement of his three sons who were also scouts. Nowadays he is involved with training scout leaders and organising New Zealand jamborees. Mr Miskelly has also just retired from being the president of the New Zealand Engineering Federation after three years. He is also a foundation council member for the New Zealand Engineering Industry Training Organisation set up in September 1991 and has just been named chairman of the Auckland branch of the Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand.

ARUN Mohanbhai is looking forward to giving his audience an insight into the everyday adventures of people working in the classic Kiwi dairy. The Farm Cove comedian and entertainer brings his one-man show, entitled Cornershop Confessions to Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, at 7.30pm on Friday, February 27. “I’ve never done this show in Howick before,â€? Mr Mohanbhai told the Times. “I last did it seven or eight years ago and haven’t had the chance to do it again until now. It’s a really good show, but I had to make a choice whether to do this one or one of my other shows, D’Arranged Marriage, on a regular basis.â€? Written by Mr Mohanbhai in 2006, Cornershop Confessions is centred on the life of ďŹ ctional character Vijay. He’s a budding music DJ yearning to break away from his father’s corner dairy to make his own way in the world. Vijay’s father ďŹ nds it tough to accept his ambitious son’s goals and the fact he may have nobody to continue his legacy by working in the dairy. Adding to the young musician’s challenges is that his grandmother is unable to speak English, his sister is unmarried and his mother is “desperately subservientâ€?. Mr Mohanbhai’s performance accolades include having been nominated in 2002 for a national

comedy Billy T Award, named in honour of the late Billy T James. He says he relied on a range of real-life experiences while writing Cornershop Confessions. “I worked in my dad’s dairy for a number of years, he says. “The show is based on my days working in that environment and all the stuff that happened. “It’s also about the whole community of people who came to the shop and the relationships we had with those folks.
Mr Mohanbhai says people who go along to his performance on February 27 can expect to have a good time and more than a few laughs. “Audience members should enjoy a fun night of comedy and gain some insight into what it’s like working in a dairy. Tarun Mohanbhai performs his one-man Cornershop Confessions public comedy stage show at Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, at 7.30pm on Friday, February 27. Tickets cost $22.

“Can’t dance without Music.....” ADVERTORIAL CD224740
RED Studio – the newest dance and modelling studio in East Auckland RED Studio opened its doors to dancers in July 2014. To begin, we specialised in Hip Hop and Jazz Funk, using the skills of top New Zealand dance instructors to choreograph and train our talented dancers. We created a positive learning environment with numbers growing quickly. Locals may have seen us performing at Midnight Madness in Howick on November 14, 2014. It goes without saying that RED Studio strives to provide high quality performance results – our love of dance is what drives us. Throughout 2015, we will be adding Body Conditioning classes, Catwalk and Modelling, Confidence and Styling workshops, and Contemporary Dance classes to our portfolio of provision. We have teachers with global dance experience joining us from the Palace and IDentity, which is really exciting for all our
students. One major opportunity that RED Studio will introduce is ‘boys-only’ classes. We have secured the services of a male dance teacher, who will work across the studio in particular with our boys to promote strong, confident male dancers. Our Hip Hop Competition troupes, newly formed in 2014, will be further developed throughout the year. These dancers practice hard and love every moment of the challenge. Troupes are reviewed annually in June, so if you’re interested in competitions get yourself into a class, work hard and get noticed! Building confidence and self esteem in our youth through Confidence and Styling, Catwalk and Modelling skills and Dance is just the start of many exciting avenues RED Studio will explore by creating performance opportunities through fashion shows, dance competitions and public performances.

ADVERTORIAL JH226806
PW Dance now stockists of Freed of London pointe shoes
PW Dance & Sportswear (PW) continues to solidify itself as a leading dancewear provider in New Zealand as they are now an official stockist and distributor of Freed of London pointe shoes. Since the take over of world-renowned principal ballet dancer Paul Wright’s shoe factory in 2006, PW has employed a qualified team of shoemakers and craftsmen who have dedicated their time to improving the quality and design of the PW brand of dance shoes. With a strong focus on their most popular shoes including ballet flats, jazz and tap shoes, PW Director Vickie Thomas has turned her sights to also providing what is considered the most popular pointe shoe in the world, Freed of London (Freed’s). “Our shoes are hand made in our own factory, allowing us to control every aspect of the shoe making process” says Thomas. “This is the same process for Freed pointe shoes, so I feel the brand sits synonymously with ours, and ultimately gives PW customers access to the very best in dance footwear.”
As a New Zealand born and bred Company it remains very important for PW to provide the very best in dancewear to New Zealand dancers. This ambition is what initially led to PW’s longstanding partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. “Our partnerships give us a great insight into the dancer’s world,” says Thomas. “It provides a fantastic opportunity for us to work with RNZB dancers, we take onboard their feedback, refine our designs and are proud to create our own extensive range of dancewear fitting for professional dancers, as well as distribute Freed pointe shoes.” PW Dance and Sportswear can be found at: 4 Uxbridge Road Howick, Auckland Ph: 537 8411

Successful event for triathletes
SPORT OF KINGS: Two types of horsepower will be pitted against one another at the BMW Polo Open this weekend. As well as the action on the field, there is the annual tradition of a race between a horse and high-performance car. Six teams are competing for the title, including defending champions Rodd and Gunn. “We have some of the best International representative players from New Zealand, England, Australia, and South Africa, plus two strong teams making the journey from the South Island,” says Auckland Polo Club manager Hannah Marshall. “It’s going to be a very tough tournament.” The BMW Polo Open is on this Sunday at Auckland Polo Club in Clevedon. Pictured is action from last year’s Times photos Wayne Martin event.
Right choice at Halbergs H
AVING dragged the Black Caps from a deep pit of despair to genuine contenders for Cricket World Cup honours, Brendon McCullum’s selection as New Zealand Sportsman of the Year at the Halberg Awards was richly deserved. Not only did he become the first Black Cap to score a test 300 in an innings and 1000 runs in a year, but his ability to turn around his team’s fortunes as a captain who leads by example has been remarkable. However, recent events suggest the team and its supporters would be unwise to count their chickens before they have hatched after a convincing 98-run triumph against Sri Lanka in Christchurch was followed by a jittery three wicket win against Scotland in Dunedin when chasing a paltry 142. Champs one day and chumps the next is not an uncommon experience for NZ cricket teams. But performances over the past year suggest that the current side
Agnew’s Angle is more consistent than so many of their predecessors. One reason is that the squad has developed real depth and no longer stands and falls on the performance of a few stars. That was evident in the first World Cup win against Sri Lanka when Corey Anderson’s 75, McCullum’s 65, Kane Williamson’s 57 and Martin Guptill’s 49 led the batting charge to 331 for six wickets. The same has also been true of bowlers Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Daniel Vettori and Anderson who have all performed well. However, I am not convinced the promising Milne is a better bet in the tight games than 35-year-old veteran Kyle Mills.
Sure, with his ability to bowl in excess of 150km per hour, he’s much faster. But he lacks the wily Mills’ variation and relies purely on sheer pace. Having struggled against Sri Lanka, the Black Caps will be wary of England in Friday’s clash despite the fact England were convincingly beaten by the rampant Australians first up. They should win but will need to perform much better than they did against the brave Scots. Meanwhile, Super Rugby coach Dave Rennie has once again shown his ability to recruit well in signing 19-year-old , 81kg Southlander Damian McKenzie, who made a brilliant debut at first-five in the Chiefs 23-18 win against the Blues. So good, in fact, that McKenzie demonstrated all the attributes that carried Aaron Cruden into the All Blacks – a sharp rugby brain, elusive running, brave tackling and accurate goal-kicking. While there is genuine excite-
ment surrounding the reuniting of Cruden and Sonny Bill Williams in the Chiefs five-eighths, McKenzie is the type of kid with the confidence not to play second fiddle to anyone. However, the Chiefs face a tough test in New Plymouth on Friday night against an impressive Brumbies side that scored six tries in thrashing the Reds 47-3. With the Force and Rebels causing major upsets with 25-15 and 20-10 wins against 2014 finalists, the Waratahs and Crusaders respectively, it appears Aussie teams have more depth this year. In failing to score a try against the Chiefs, the Blues 18 points all came from the boot of Ihaia West who converted six penalties. West is a good attacking player but currently lacks young McKenzie’s tactical nous. Unfortunately lack of backline cohesion remains a major problem for the Blues who face the Stormers in Cape Town on Sunday.
HOWICK and Pakuranga triathletes made the podium in four of the six races at the Sovereign Tri Series event at Takapuna last Friday night. Leading the way was Howick’s Ryan Sissons who won the elite men’s race in the Oceania Continental Cup. The men’s competition took place over heats and final, held on the same evening. The heats saw some cagey racing over the 300-metre swim, 9.2-kilometre and 2.6km run super-sprint distance as athletes first looked to qualify for the final and then ease off to save their legs. In the final, Sissons took charge on the run to win by seven seconds, the third time he has won in Takapuna. “The first race I didn’t have a great swim and had to work hard the first lap of the bike,” he said. “But coming to the final I kind of got going, having warmed and was able to get the legs moving. I haven’t backed off some heavy training this week but the final was great, the swim was where it needed to be and I didn’t do too much work on the bike. “That was my approach as I wanted to work hard on the run. I came off the bike and pushed from the start and tried to go as fast as I could the whole way, I got a decent gap and pushed to the finish.” In the boys’ junior (18-19 years) division, Macleans College pupil Leo Roper was first with schoolmate Trent Dodds winning the boys’ youth (15-17) category. Fourteen-year-old Dylan McCullough was fifth. All are Global Triathlon Coaching athletes, as is Howick College’s Ainsley Thorpe, who was second in the girls’ youth race.

Wallbank back for sophomore year By DANIEL SILVERTON
F
ENCIBLES United’s Angela Wallbank is looking on the bright side of a challenging ďŹ rst season in charge of a premier women’s team. Wallbank led Fencibles to eighth in the 10-team northern region premier women’s league last season, with four wins, a draw and 13 losses. Despite the lopsided record, she says there were positives in her rookie season at the highest echelon of women’s club football in New Zealand, with a team largely made up of young and untested players. “It was new for everyone,â€? Wallbank told the Times. “It was a challenge for me competing at a different level, trying to get football knowledge and information across to the players. “I really enjoyed it.â€? Fencibles ďŹ nished two points back from Papatoetoe, with a big gulf up to the top six teams. “The results were pretty fair,â€? says Wallbank. “There were a couple of games against a couple of clubs that I thought we should have got three points in. “But that is football. That might have put us only one place ahead
of where we were. “Above us [on the table] was a lot of experience, a lot of players who had played at that level before, so overall I think we did really well to challenge those teams.â€? Fencibles’ 1-2 and 0-2 losses to Papatoetoe were disappointing, and they were close to snaring wins against ďŹ fth-placed Lynn Avon, going down 2-3 and drawing 0-0. “We should have done something more against the likes of Papatoetoe. “We were unlucky in the ďŹ rst Lynn-Avon game. We came back from behind and in the last couple of minutes there was an accidental handball in the box which gave them a penalty to put them ahead. “There were a number of games where we just weren’t hitting the target, which could’ve changed the result.â€? Highlights of the season included holding league winners Forrest Hill Milford to 0-2, and a scoreless ďŹ rst half against the second-best attacking team, Claudelands Rovers. “Against Forrest Hill Milford, it showed that we were able to work together and keep those top goal scorers away from our goal. “It showed there is a base structure there and it is just a matter of
building on that. “Being able to work a great bunch of girls who at times performed phenomenally, you’ll walk away with a smile on your face regardless of the outcome. The major negative of the debut experience was away from the pitch, when Wallbank was alerted to disparaging remarks made on social media and in online forums. “Something that I haven’t been exposed to before is public perception and making it personal, she says. “It’s a little bit sad. It’s not something that will deter me or stop me from what I’m doing. “If you’re strong enough and believe in what you are doing, people can sit behind a computer screen and say what they like. After originally been given a two-year tenure, Wallbank was reappointed to the role this year following a review prompted by a change of management at the club. “They looked at how things were structured, what they were trying to achieve and to get everything aligned. “Which I think is a good thing. IN CHARGE: Angela Wallbank is returning as coach of Fencibles United’s premier women’s team. Photo supplied / JLSPhotographs.com
